  1. I tell you, being an emotional person is a load to carry.

  2. It's hard.

  3. But it's the way God wired me and so just here I am.

  4. You must be informed by the Scripture.

  5. In fact, you can't really sing great songs apart from the Scripture.

  6. Tell your ma, tell your pa, our loves are going to grow.

  7. Nothing, right?

  8. But when we sing such a song as we just finished singing, your love never fails.

  9. I don't know about you, but I was thinking about passages of Scripture.

  10. And so we move from singing the Word to being instructed by the Word.

  11. And allowing the Word to be the thing that frames our life, our worship, and our ambitions for eternity.

  12. Isn't that right?

  13. Turn in your Bible to John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  14. And I want you to look at the clock, the watch.

  15. We don't have a clock in the front or the back.

  16. There's a very good reason for that.

  17. All I'm saying is I do want you to know that when John finished our time of singing together,

  18. we're going to find out whether I can stomp on the throttle and get it done in fewer minutes.

  19. And don't hold that against me and bring it up ever again.

  20. So, John 7, verse 1.

    John 7:1

  21. After this, Jesus went in Galilee.

  22. About in Galilee, he would not go about in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill him.

  23. Now, the feast, the Jews' feast of the booths was at hand.

  24. So his brothers said to him,

  25. Leave here and go to Judea that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.

  26. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly.

  27. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.

  28. For not even his brothers believed in him.

  29. Jesus said to them,

  30. My time has not yet come,

  31. but your time is always here.

  32. Let's pray.

  33. And here's what I want you to do as I am praying.

  34. I would ask that you pray as well.

  35. God, conscious, deliberate expression of your dependence upon the Spirit of God,

  36. helping me as I preach,

  37. and you as you attend to the Word of God.

  38. Father,

  39. this morning we are gathered together because of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  40. and because you have given to us your Word,

  41. which is entirely sufficient,

  42. that we who are your children would be completely furnished for all good work.

  43. We pray for the enabling of the Spirit of God both in my preaching

  44. that you would allow me through your enabling to be clear,

  45. to be simple in communication,

  46. to be passionate for the things that exalt the Savior

  47. and that your Spirit would take the word that you have here in the Scriptures

  48. and weave it into our heart that the thing that stands out to us

  49. would be the glory and the sufficiency and the supremacy of the Lord Jesus,

  50. that we, having not yet seen Him, would grow to care about Him more

  51. and long for the day that we will see our Savior face to face.

  52. Let that be the ambition and affection of our life

  53. and let our time in the Word of God strengthen that desire.

  54. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  55. Now, it is important when we take a small piece of passage

  56. to actually understand the larger context.

  57. context. And today is no exception to that rule.

  58. So if I were to ask you,

  59. what is one verse that gives you an overview of what the book of John is about?

  60. How many of you would say,

  61. well, I'm thinking right now of John chapter 21, verse 31.

  62. Would you say that?

  63. These things are written, what?

  64. So that you may know or that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  65. and that by believing you may have life in His name.

  66. When we take the book of John and we are working our way through it,

  67. we understand that one of the characteristics of this book

  68. is that there's a lot of detail in Christ's life that's left out.

  69. There are actually only seven major little pictures that are given to us.

  70. This is different than the synoptic gospels that give us lots of detail.

  71. And so when John limits his lessons to seven particular pictures,

  72. it's appropriate for us to really pay careful attention.

  73. And our text this morning stays on that theme of making it clear to us who Jesus is

  74. so that we may believe in Him as the Son of God.

  75. I do want you to understand that Jesus, at this point in John chapter 7,

    John 7 chapter mention

  76. is still away from Jerusalem.

  77. You'll remember what had happened as He'd started His public ministry

  78. in Jerusalem, the city of God.

  79. And how had He actually begun?

  80. How did He start?

  81. Does anybody remember?

  82. Wave at me if you remember what He did

  83. for His first public demonstration of His authority and power.

  84. What did He do?

  85. That was actually a little more private.

  86. You're not doing bad because that's how John starts.

  87. But what was the big smackdown event in Jerusalem?

  88. Cleaning the temple, right?

  89. I mean, here is a nobody comes bopping out of the...

  90. I am having trouble with this.

  91. Does anyone have chewing gum to stick on my ear here?

  92. Bear with me.

  93. It's like masking tape might be good.

  94. Okay.

  95. Remember, He walks into Jerusalem and He goes into the temple

  96. and one lone guy cleans house.

  97. I mean, that's just unbelievable.

  98. And you remember, it was such an impressive act

  99. that all the scribes and Pharisees and all the leaders of Jerusalem

  100. could do as they kind of whine a little bit and say,

  101. yeah, and where do you get the right to do this?

  102. You know, it's like, meh, meh, meh.

  103. And they're intimidated.

  104. Well, following that, Jesus ends up sensing adequate pushback

  105. from what He had done that He moved away from Jerusalem,

  106. went back towards Galilee.

  107. And in that journey, you remember, He stopped and met the woman at the well,

  108. Samaritan woman.

  109. She came to Christ.

  110. And later, there we have John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  111. And that extended passage is really an early picture

  112. of what was developing in the ministry.

  113. And we find that Christ's miracles were drawing lots of people

  114. to be interested in Him.

  115. But Christ's teaching was leading to more and more people

  116. deciding that they didn't want what He really had to offer.

  117. And so we are now in John 7.

  118. And I might encourage you to actually pencil a note in your margin of your Bible.

  119. We are six months from the cross.

  120. I think that's important.

  121. Six months from the cross.

  122. And what we find in John chapter 7,

    John 7 chapter mention

  123. and we're going to look at verses 1 through 13,

  124. is really the widening gap

  125. between the people that Christ came to minister to

  126. and what His purpose and His calling really was.

  127. So let's kind of take the passage and break it up

  128. and realize that what we find, first of all,

  129. is how most people actually saw Jesus.

  130. You look there in John chapter 7,

    John 7 chapter mention

  131. and I want you to pick up with me there, if you will, at verse 2.

  132. And it was the timing of the Feast of Booths.

  133. And for the nation of Israel,

  134. there were three public celebrations

  135. that all the nation of Israel was actually to be involved in.

  136. One of them was a Passover,

  137. and we know that was a pretty big deal.

  138. But the Feast of Booths, in some ways,

  139. was the most spectacular, the most joyful.

  140. And it was one...

  141. By the way, I do want to tell you that I'm going to be on vacation starting...

  142. Actually, Pastor Saul is going to be preaching for two weeks in a row.

  143. You get to do one of my special passages.

  144. I'm like, shoot.

  145. But hey, that always happens.

  146. He is going to be preaching on John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  147. carrying on, and I will be back about two weeks later.

  148. Judith and I, I have to confess this,

  149. I'm going deer hunting.

  150. I shouldn't say that publicly.

  151. But then after that, we're going down to Norris Lake,

  152. and we're going to spend a little time down there together.

  153. And we will come back and address John chapter 7, verse 37.

    John 7:37

  154. The Feast of Booths, a great party for a nation of Israel,

  155. was a time in which they reminded themselves of what God had done

  156. in bringing them out of the land of Egypt and slavery.

  157. But it was also a time of great spiritual intent or import.

  158. It was where they actually, on the great day of the feast,

  159. and we're going to see this in John chapter 7, verse 37,

    John 7:37

  160. they would actually take large pots of water

  161. and pour them down the steps of the temple.

  162. And that was an indication of the promised coming of the Holy Spirit.

  163. It was a spectacular festival and a feast,

  164. and everybody loved coming to it.

  165. In that context, we find that the brothers, here in verse 4,

  166. so his brothers said to him,

  167. leave here and go to Judea,

  168. that your disciples also may see the works that you're doing.

  169. I want you to understand that the brothers were impressed

  170. by what they saw Jesus doing,

  171. and they, along with many,

  172. were actually impressed with Christ's power,

  173. but they were completely tone deaf to his truth.

  174. They saw the miracles,

  175. they saw the evidence of his authority and power,

  176. but the truth of the matter is,

  177. is they weren't the least bit moved

  178. by the reality of what his message was all about.

  179. I do want you to know,

  180. if you're stopping to think carefully,

  181. that what this passage tells us

  182. is that Jesus actually did have half-brothers.

  183. What does that tell you about Mary?

  184. It tells you that she did not remain a perpetual virgin.

  185. It tells you that she had other children besides Jesus.

  186. And if you will keep your finger there in John,

  187. because of the false teaching

  188. regarding the perpetual virginity of Mary,

  189. I want you to turn in your Bible.

  190. At the end of the day,

  191. the question is,

  192. what does the Bible,

  193. what?

  194. What's it say?

  195. Okay.

  196. So we're thinking here,

  197. Jesus had brothers?

  198. Actually, they were half-brothers.

  199. But turn to Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  200. Matthew chapter 13, verse 35 and 36.

    Matthew 13:35

  201. Wow, I can hear all those pages rustling.

  202. And I am discovering that I have tracked the wrong passage.

  203. That means one of you deacons is going to have to save me.

  204. 35 and 36.

  205. Where does it...

  206. How did I do this?

  207. Okay.

  208. John...

  209. I mean, Tom,

  210. would you run the search engine that you have?

  211. And...

  212. Is it 55 and 56?

  213. There we go.

  214. Okay.

  215. Is not...

  216. Yes.

  217. Three should be five.

  218. John 13, 55 and 56.

  219. Okay, here we go.

  220. Is not this the carpenter's son?

  221. Is not his mother called Mary?

  222. Are not his brothers,

  223. James, Joseph, and Simon, and Judas?

  224. And are not his sisters among us.

  225. What does this tell us?

  226. I mean, common sense, right?

  227. Mary had more children, quite a few actually, besides Jesus.

  228. And so here we find that, going back to John chapter 7,

    John 7 chapter mention

  229. his brothers, they were impressed with the power that Jesus was displaying.

  230. It was undeniable.

  231. They could see the things that were being done.

  232. But they didn't believe in him at all.

  233. And while they recognized that he was doing exceptional things,

  234. they really didn't see the value of those exceptional things

  235. in relationship to their own soul.

  236. I kind of imagine what they were saying here.

  237. In the passage, he said, listen.

  238. He says, no one...verse 4...

  239. No one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly.

  240. If you do these things, evident, obvious,

  241. show yourself to the world.

  242. You see, in essence, what the brothers were saying is,

  243. hey, we recognize that you are displaying some exceptional power,

  244. and you might as well make something of yourself.

  245. Make a name.

  246. Let other people know what you can do.

  247. You've done some pretty spectacular stuff out here in the countryside,

  248. but take your game to another level.

  249. Go up to Jerusalem and let everybody see what you can do.

  250. It's interesting that while they recognized Christ's power,

  251. they had no sensitivity to what his message really was about.

  252. And I'm afraid that there are many, many people today

  253. that, like Christ's brothers, are all caught up in the superficial.

  254. They like good works.

  255. They like nice deeds.

  256. And they've completely missed the message of sin and repentance.

  257. I was struck last week by listening to a short clip of President Obama

  258. kind of talking very favorably about the Pope,

  259. and he was just waxing eloquent about how the Pope was such a messenger

  260. for the disadvantaged.

  261. And he said this,

  262. and the Pope has made it clear that the central tenet of Christianity is mercy.

  263. I thought to myself, hmm,

  264. the greatest disadvantage of the human race is not a need for mercy,

  265. but the greatest disadvantage of the human race is sin.

  266. And the truth of the matter is,

  267. is that God in His mercy sent Christ to be the substitution for our sin

  268. and to die in our place that we might have salvation through faith in Him.

  269. So I recognize here at first that John is giving us a picture of,

  270. so what did people think about Jesus?

  271. Well, they kind of liked His miracles, okay.

  272. There's a second group that we find,

  273. and you'll pick up at the hostility.

  274. First of all, in verse 1, it says,

  275. the Jews were seeking to kill Him.

  276. Again, in verse 11, it says this,

  277. the Jews were looking for Him at the feast,

  278. saying, where is He?

  279. You know, they were interested,

  280. not because they wanted help from Him,

  281. spiritually speaking,

  282. but they were kind of put off by,

  283. is He going to show up and cause a problem for our party,

  284. you know, that kind of thing.

  285. And you read that they had gone out of their way,

  286. actually, the Jewish leadership,

  287. to tamp down public conversations about Jesus.

  288. You find out that when Jesus showed up,

  289. it says here that the people,

  290. though they were muttering about Him,

  291. they were very careful that they didn't do it openly

  292. because they knew they would get kind of pushed back

  293. from the leadership.

  294. And so you have to recognize this,

  295. that when the world goes out of its way

  296. to suppress the truth,

  297. you can be sure that what is going on

  298. is that conviction is being resisted.

  299. I read an article,

  300. again last week,

  301. being that this is the first day of the week,

  302. I read of an esteemed doctor

  303. who was part of Harvard

  304. or was on the staff of faculty at Harvard

  305. who also had visiting privileges

  306. at a Boston hospital.

  307. And several years ago, actually,

  308. he put together a private research paper

  309. that talked about the medical risks of sodomy.

  310. When he published this,

  311. among the other physicians in the hospital,

  312. it led to his actually being censured

  313. and eventually fired by the hospital.

  314. Why?

  315. Because he pointed out

  316. that sin creates unintended consequences

  317. and heartache,

  318. and when in that private community,

  319. he said,

  320. listen,

  321. has anybody ever stopped to think

  322. that when we endorse all this kind of misbehavior

  323. that we actually end up creating

  324. greater public health needs?

  325. He was fired for that.

  326. I got to tell you that

  327. you can be sure that

  328. when the truth is spoken clearly

  329. and carefully,

  330. however kindly it is said,

  331. it ends up being offensive

  332. to those who hate the truth.

  333. And you can be sure that Jesus here,

  334. as he spoke about the need of man's soul

  335. and the realities of sin,

  336. he ended up deeply offending the Jewish leaders

  337. who had proposed that ultimately

  338. the way to solve sin problems

  339. was just to do good works.

  340. And you and I bump into people all the time

  341. that are of the mind

  342. that really the issue in their life

  343. can be improved by a little more effort

  344. on their part

  345. or it's just some guy taking care of some issues

  346. and it'll be okay.

  347. So why are you going to go to heaven?

  348. Well, because I'm a pretty good person.

  349. Now, all of us have a tendency

  350. when we're smiling in public

  351. to say we're a pretty good person.

  352. Isn't that right?

  353. But the fact of the matter is

  354. that our conscience plagues us at night

  355. when we're alone.

  356. And so I want you to recognize

  357. that the Jewish hostility

  358. over Christ's clear teaching

  359. was understandable.

  360. Now, there's a third group

  361. that I want you to recognize

  362. and you look there in verse 12

  363. and there was much muttering

  364. about him among the people.

  365. They were muttering back and forth

  366. and that word muttering here

  367. is a word in the Greek

  368. that actually talks about

  369. complaining or bickering.

  370. No one in the bickering crowd

  371. really had a remedy

  372. or a conclusion.

  373. What they were doing

  374. was just kind of going back and forth

  375. about the issues of who Jesus was.

  376. And so you look there at verse 12

  377. and some said he's a good man.

  378. Some said, well, no,

  379. he's leading the people astray.

  380. And back and forth they went

  381. just kind of throwing their ideas

  382. back and forth

  383. and they really weren't settled

  384. in any way

  385. with what the reality

  386. of who Jesus was

  387. and what his ministry was.

  388. They didn't get that part at all.

  389. So instead of being humble enough

  390. to admit what their need was,

  391. the vast majority of people

  392. just chose to kind of muddle along

  393. and complain among themselves

  394. and be uncomfortable

  395. with the reality

  396. that on one hand

  397. you had the evidence

  398. of Christ doing spectacular miracles,

  399. undeniable,

  400. and on the other hand,

  401. well, he was teaching things

  402. that were really hard to swallow.

  403. Remember what happened

  404. in John chapter 6?

    John 6 chapter mention

  405. After he had finished his sermon

  406. and as they were playing

  407. verse 1 and only verse 1

  408. of just as I am,

  409. what happened?

  410. All of you who need

  411. to recognize Christ

  412. as your Savior

  413. and confess your sins

  414. come towards the front.

  415. Nobody came.

  416. They all walked out.

  417. They didn't want to hear it.

  418. They were offended.

  419. They were offended.

  420. And so here we are,

  421. John 7,

  422. and it tells us

  423. that the people

  424. kind of just kind of

  425. muttered and grumbled

  426. and fussed a little bit

  427. but never came to a conscious

  428. and deliberate choice.

  429. I'm reminded of actually

  430. what happened

  431. over in 1 Kings chapter 18,

    1 Kings 18:21

  432. verse 21.

  433. Don't need to turn to it,

  434. but you'll remember there

  435. that Elijah,

  436. it had not rained

  437. for three years

  438. and so Elijah called

  439. for a smackdown

  440. between him alone,

  441. the God of the universe,

  442. and the 450 prophets of Baal.

  443. And when they all came together

  444. on top of that little hill,

  445. he said,

  446. hey guys,

  447. what's the problem with you?

  448. Listen to what he said.

  449. Elijah came near

  450. to all the people

  451. and said,

  452. how long will you go limping

  453. between two different opinions?

  454. I like that.

  455. How long will you go limping

  456. between two different,

  457. well,

  458. on the other hand,

  459. well,

  460. you know,

  461. he said,

  462. if the Lord is God,

  463. follow him.

  464. But if Baal,

  465. then follow him.

  466. And here's what the people did.

  467. Does anybody know

  468. what the people did?

  469. They didn't say a word.

  470. And the truth of the matter is

  471. there are some of you

  472. here this morning

  473. in the hearing

  474. of the word of God

  475. that are going to take

  476. that passive,

  477. non-responsive role

  478. and play it out this way.

  479. You heard the word,

  480. you understand that Christ

  481. put you on the spot

  482. of saying yes or no

  483. and you're just going to

  484. kind of keep on

  485. doing your own thing.

  486. I would plead with you

  487. this morning,

  488. understand that the purpose

  489. of preaching

  490. is to put you on the spot

  491. of saying yes or no

  492. to Christ.

  493. And understand this morning

  494. that Jesus is the Christ,

  495. the Son of the living God

  496. and the one through whom

  497. salvation comes.

  498. And he calls you

  499. to believe in him

  500. and you who have

  501. believed in him,

  502. he calls you

  503. to live a life

  504. that is a stellar example

  505. of his power to save.

  506. That brings us

  507. to one other thing

  508. that I want us

  509. to see this morning.

  510. What is the truth

  511. about Jesus?

  512. First of all,

  513. let's recognize

  514. that he understood

  515. his life's mission.

  516. He understood

  517. his life's mission.

  518. His brothers wanted him

  519. to go up to Jerusalem

  520. and show his stuff,

  521. make a name for yourself,

  522. do something pretty spectacular,

  523. heal people.

  524. Let everybody be impressed.

  525. Christ understood

  526. his life's mission

  527. was not just about

  528. taking care of

  529. the physiological

  530. needs of people.

  531. You know,

  532. I've been sobered

  533. when I stop and think

  534. about all the adulation,

  535. the praise and adoration

  536. that our culture

  537. has heaped on the Pope

  538. when I am struck

  539. by the fact

  540. that not in a single instance

  541. did he ever make

  542. the gospel clear.

  543. That's stunning.

  544. I mean,

  545. what would you think

  546. of a pastor

  547. that you listened to

  548. for longer than an hour

  549. and he never told you

  550. how to get to heaven?

  551. John chapter 7,

    John 7:7

  552. verse 7,

  553. just in case you wonder

  554. how Jesus handled

  555. this issue,

  556. here's what it says,

  557. the world cannot hate you

  558. but it hates me

  559. because I testify

  560. about the things,

  561. or I testify it

  562. that its works are evil.

  563. Turn over in your Bible

  564. if you would

  565. to Luke chapter 6.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  566. Thank you, Tom,

  567. for helping me

  568. with that fall earlier.

  569. I think I've got

  570. this one right.

  571. Luke chapter 6,

    Luke 6:26

  572. verse 26.

  573. Woe to you, Tim.

  574. Woe to you, Francis.

  575. When all people

  576. speak well of you,

  577. for so their fathers did

  578. to the false prophets.

  579. Hey,

  580. if I had one shot

  581. at Congress,

  582. does anybody want to guess

  583. what I would say?

  584. Huh?

  585. It would be this.

  586. Christ Jesus came into the world

  587. to save sinners

  588. and the hope

  589. of eternal life

  590. rests in believing

  591. in his finished work

  592. upon the cross.

  593. The greatest problem

  594. in mankind's existence

  595. is a sinful,

  596. wicked heart

  597. that rejects

  598. the glory

  599. and the holiness

  600. of God

  601. and there is salvation

  602. in no other person

  603. but in the work

  604. of Christ on the cross.

  605. Isn't that true?

  606. That is our one

  607. singular message

  608. that we have.

  609. And if you wonder

  610. what Jesus was all about,

  611. he understood

  612. his life's mission,

  613. it was to draw attention

  614. to the desperate need

  615. of mankind's heart

  616. and let them know

  617. they couldn't save themselves

  618. by their own efforts.

  619. For another,

  620. as you think about it,

  621. Jesus was profoundly

  622. merciful and gentle

  623. but at the same time

  624. he was also clear

  625. that sin is man's

  626. greatest problem.

  627. Sin is man's

  628. greatest problem.

  629. I got to tell you,

  630. Jesus in many

  631. different instances

  632. could have chosen

  633. to accommodate

  634. the world that he was in

  635. and the people that

  636. for a period of time

  637. just loved his

  638. spectacular behavior.

  639. I mean,

  640. what we know

  641. in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  642. it tells us

  643. that the crowd

  644. wanted to take him

  645. and force him

  646. to be their king.

  647. He didn't do it.

  648. And Satan comes to him

  649. and Satan earlier,

  650. if you're back in Matthew

  651. or in Mark,

  652. I believe you'll find

  653. that when Satan

  654. came to tempt Jesus,

  655. it was,

  656. hey listen,

  657. I can give you

  658. all this power,

  659. all you have to do

  660. is bow down

  661. and say that I'm,

  662. worship me.

  663. No way.

  664. So I want you

  665. to understand

  666. that here is Jesus

  667. invited nowhere

  668. to speak in Washington

  669. or Jerusalem

  670. other than

  671. on his own initiative

  672. and the thing

  673. that he makes

  674. undeniably clear

  675. is that he came

  676. to be the Lamb of God

  677. and take away

  678. the sins of the world

  679. and I want you

  680. to understand

  681. that Christ made

  682. that undeniably clear

  683. over and over

  684. and over again.

  685. No one listened

  686. to him for very long

  687. and didn't understand

  688. that the issue

  689. of the heart

  690. was most important.

  691. There's a third thing

  692. that I want you

  693. to see this morning.

  694. I want you to know

  695. that Jesus knew

  696. that his call

  697. was to the cross.

  698. You look there

  699. in John chapter 7

    John 7:6

  700. verse 6

  701. Jesus says

  702. my time has not

  703. yet come.

  704. Look at verse 8

  705. you go up to the feast

  706. for I am not going

  707. up to this feast

  708. for my time

  709. has not yet

  710. fully come.

  711. You know what?

  712. Jesus knew

  713. exactly

  714. what

  715. the plan was.

  716. He knew

  717. what his mission

  718. was

  719. and his life

  720. was framed

  721. by that singular

  722. understanding

  723. of what he was

  724. there to do

  725. and that it was

  726. in the control

  727. and direction

  728. of his father

  729. and he completely

  730. got it.

  731. He was focused

  732. on his mission.

  733. So let me ask

  734. you a question

  735. this morning

  736. as you think

  737. about the issue.

  738. What are you

  739. going to do

  740. with Jesus?

  741. The obvious

  742. question that we

  743. find playing out

  744. in John chapter 7

    John 7 chapter mention

  745. in these 13 verses

  746. that we kind of

  747. look at in an overview

  748. is that we've given

  749. we've been able

  750. to see this picture

  751. of how most people

  752. saw Jesus.

  753. Pretty good

  754. with miracles

  755. but I'm not

  756. interested in what

  757. he has to say

  758. about my soul.

  759. Pretty irritating

  760. in that he

  761. draws attention

  762. to the fact

  763. that self-righteousness

  764. doesn't cut it

  765. and

  766. kind of confusing

  767. because

  768. you know

  769. on the one hand

  770. I see that he's

  771. doing some

  772. pretty big things

  773. but on the other hand

  774. he's really making

  775. me uncomfortable

  776. when he's talking

  777. about my soul.

  778. No,

  779. just kind of wait.

  780. John 7

  781. gives us a picture

  782. of how the majority

  783. of people

  784. actually looked

  785. at Jesus.

  786. On the other hand

  787. we have Jesus

  788. with a very,

  789. very clear point

  790. saying to everyone

  791. that he came

  792. in contact with

  793. the desperate

  794. need of your heart.

  795. Sinful,

  796. justly condemned

  797. before a holy God.

  798. Hardened,

  799. resistant

  800. is that there

  801. really is

  802. no remedy

  803. for the ugly

  804. darkness

  805. of your soul

  806. apart from me.

  807. I want you

  808. to think about that

  809. because here's

  810. the truth.

  811. There's some of you

  812. sitting here

  813. today

  814. and I think

  815. that this passage

  816. in John chapter 7

    John 7 chapter mention

  817. kind of,

  818. everybody look up

  819. so you know

  820. I'm talking to you,

  821. right?

  822. Everybody look up.

  823. I'm talking to you.

  824. I really am.

  825. There's some of you

  826. sitting here today

  827. that are actually

  828. pushing off Jesus

  829. just like

  830. that crowd

  831. did.

  832. Some of you

  833. have grown up

  834. in Christian homes.

  835. You've heard

  836. all the Bible

  837. verses

  838. and you're kind

  839. of irritated

  840. by some of the

  841. idiosyncrasies

  842. that you're having

  843. in your context,

  844. right?

  845. Your parents want

  846. this or your parents,

  847. I'm not going to do that.

  848. Really?

  849. The main issue

  850. is not what

  851. your parents want.

  852. The main issue

  853. is what about

  854. the darkness

  855. of your heart?

  856. Are you listening

  857. to me?

  858. There is no remedy

  859. for that dark

  860. and unhappy heart

  861. apart from what

  862. Jesus did on the cross

  863. in dying for

  864. your sins.

  865. And when a person

  866. comes to genuine

  867. faith in Christ,

  868. you know what

  869. the Bible says?

  870. It says they're

  871. born again.

  872. They stop being

  873. who they used to be

  874. and they are

  875. somebody completely

  876. different.

  877. I get excited

  878. about that.

  879. I was in the car

  880. last week

  881. with an individual.

  882. I tell you,

  883. I bump into

  884. so many people

  885. who think they're saved.

  886. I mean,

  887. you know,

  888. after all,

  889. they find out

  890. I'm a Baptist pastor

  891. and they think

  892. the safeguard is

  893. I'm saved.

  894. And I love

  895. telling them,

  896. if you're saved,

  897. you don't have

  898. to stay the way

  899. you are.

  900. In fact,

  901. Jesus died on the cross

  902. to guarantee

  903. the absolute certainty

  904. that not only

  905. do you go to heaven,

  906. but you get different.

  907. I was reading this

  908. morning in devotions

  909. where Jesus talked

  910. about salvation

  911. and He kind of

  912. compared it to,

  913. you know,

  914. when you plant a seed,

  915. something happens,

  916. right?

  917. When you put leaven

  918. in dough,

  919. what happens?

  920. If the leaven is there,

  921. the dough does what?

  922. I know,

  923. some of you scientists

  924. want to tell me

  925. that you have to have

  926. the right humidity

  927. and you have to have

  928. the right temperature.

  929. Stop all that.

  930. Okay?

  931. Just dough does its thing

  932. when there's yeast in it.

  933. Listen to me.

  934. There are some of you

  935. sitting here today

  936. that really can't

  937. give me any evidence

  938. or your own conscience

  939. can't give you any evidence

  940. that your profession

  941. of faith

  942. has made

  943. any difference

  944. in your life.

  945. So ask yourself

  946. the question,

  947. which pile am I in?

  948. If any man be

  949. in Christ Jesus,

  950. he is a

  951. new creation.

  952. And there's some of you

  953. here today

  954. that desperately need Christ

  955. and you think

  956. your problem

  957. is other people.

  958. It's not the case.

  959. On the other hand,

  960. to you who are believers,

  961. can I tell you something?

  962. A good picture of Jesus

  963. ought to absolutely inspire you

  964. to live every moment

  965. of your life

  966. with every breath you draw

  967. to make the spectacular

  968. Lord and Savior

  969. of this world evident.

  970. Why are you here

  971. and not up there?

  972. For one reason,

  973. that Christ might be

  974. exalted in my life

  975. until he takes me home.

  976. And anything less than that,

  977. anything less than that,

  978. dishonors the glory

  979. of the cross.

  980. And so I would plead

  981. with you this morning,

  982. if you are a believer,

  983. glory in his name,

  984. live your life

  985. like he did

  986. with his mission

  987. clear in view

  988. and long for the day

  989. that you will see him

  990. face to face.

  991. Let's close in prayer.

  992. Amen.
