  1. I especially appreciate Colin's song.

  2. I think after the news and the pastoral prayer that I did, Colin's song was helpful and was very connected.

  3. ! We can trust God.

  4. Why don't you turn with me to the book of John, chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  5. Gracious Father, help us to understand your teaching, that we would obey it.

  6. In Christ's name, amen.

  7. I wonder if you've had a teacher that just made a tremendous impact on your life.

  8. Someone that you just connected with, that taught you the material, but they taught it in such a way that not only did you remember it and understand it,

  9. but you also kind of made that information your own.

  10. A teacher that made the subject just kind of come alive.

  11. A teacher that when you actually, you took the class and you were just glad, wow, I'm just so happy that I had that teacher and that material.

  12. I have to tell you, my granddaughter has just a wonderful teacher that has just made, even so far this year, has just made tremendous inroads with her.

  13. When I look back, I can't remember a single teacher I had in grade school or high school.

  14. That probably says more about me than them.

  15. I want you to know, but I can't remember a single one.

  16. When I went to OSU, by that time in my life, I already had a wife, two kids, a full-time job.

  17. The teachers, even though I was really interested in the material, I just loved physics.

  18. I loved calculus.

  19. But still, it was kind of like they were a means to an end.

  20. I finally had one of those teachers.

  21. In seminary, I had Dr. Crawford.

  22. I know Linda knows him, maybe some of the others.

  23. He was at Grand Rapids for many, many years.

  24. He's with the Lord now.

  25. He taught systematic theology and church history.

  26. I can remember going there for summer sessions.

  27. Because they would pack the stuff together for summer sessions, you would have four hours of class, four hours of lecture.

  28. Dr. Crawford could use all four hours and then some.

  29. When you got done with this class, and if Rich Brown and I used to just talk about Dr. Crawford all the time.

  30. When you got done with that four-hour class, you know what you wanted to do?

  31. Go to the dorm room and read your Bible.

  32. You couldn't wait to just, I want to know some more.

  33. How does that fit?

  34. How does that fit into this?

  35. How do these things connect together?

  36. You were just so excited about the material.

  37. You would stay up until early hours of the morning and then just get up and do it again the next day.

  38. Because Dr. Crawford made God's word come alive.

  39. He made you want to know it.

  40. As I said, he's with the Lord now.

  41. But you know, but I really appreciated him.

  42. But Dr. Crawford, or the teacher that you thought of when I asked if you had one of those teachers,

  43. can't compare with the great teacher.

  44. In fact, in many ways, the biggest thing, the most significant thing about Jesus Christ

  45. was his teaching rather than his miracles.

  46. You see, in many ways, the miracles were really less consequence.

  47. People liked the free lunch.

  48. The Pharisees and scribes were not concerned about meals on wheels.

  49. But what they didn't like was when Jesus Christ said,

  50. I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  51. I am the bread of life.

  52. And if you don't eat of my flesh and drink of my blood, you are not part of me.

  53. And when he said that, what happened?

  54. Everybody left.

  55. Except the twelve.

  56. And even with them, he turns to Peter and says,

  57. Are you going to go?

  58. And what does Peter say?

  59. I would, but where else would I go?

  60. There's no place I could go because no one else has the words of life.

  61. John chapter 7, verses 14 to 24.

    John 7:14–24

  62. About the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.

  63. The Jews therefore marveled, saying,

  64. How is it that this man has learning when he's never studied?

  65. So Jesus answered them,

  66. My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.

  67. If anyone's will is to do God's will,

  68. he will know whether the teaching is from God

  69. or whether I'm speaking on my own authority.

  70. The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory.

  71. But the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true.

  72. And in him there is no falsehood.

  73. Has not Moses given you the law?

  74. Yet none of you keeps the law.

  75. Why do you seek to kill me?

  76. The crowd answered,

  77. You have a demon.

  78. Who is seeking to kill you?

  79. Jesus answered them,

  80. I did one work,

  81. and you all marvel at it.

  82. Moses gave you circumcision,

  83. not that it came from Moses,

  84. but from the fathers.

  85. And you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

  86. If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision,

  87. so that the law of Moses may not be broken,

  88. are you angry with me because on the Sabbath

  89. I made a man's whole body well?

  90. Do not judge by appearances,

  91. but judge with right judgment.

  92. You'll remember the context with me.

  93. Jesus had been in Jerusalem about six months earlier,

  94. and at that time he had healed a man by the pool of Bethsaida.

  95. It was on the Sabbath.

  96. And he told the man,

  97. Get up, take your bed, and go.

  98. Them, the religious leaders,

  99. seeing Jesus tell this man to carry his bed on a Sabbath day,

  100. were just incensed.

  101. And they did try to kill him.

  102. So much so that Jesus had to leave there.

  103. He went back up to the northern part,

  104. and then there's about a six-month period in there,

  105. and then we come to right before this,

  106. where Jesus' brothers,

  107. his earthly human half-brothers,

  108. had said to him,

  109. Hey, you want to be something special?

  110. Go to Jerusalem during the Feast of the Tabernacle.

  111. That's when everybody goes to Jerusalem again,

  112. and you can just go in there and teach,

  113. and everybody will make a big thing over you.

  114. Jesus wasn't concerned about his own glory.

  115. He was about completing the will of the Father.

  116. So he said, I'm not going now.

  117. And this passage that we're looking at today,

  118. then Jesus does go.

  119. Someplace in the middle of the feast.

  120. And he goes and he starts teaching,

  121. and people in Jerusalem,

  122. just like people every place that he went,

  123. are amazed at his teaching.

  124. See, the teaching of Jesus was unique.

  125. First thing I want you to see is that

  126. his teaching was with understanding.

  127. It was informed.

  128. It made sense.

  129. It was attractive to people.

  130. It fit together.

  131. We might say that it was logical.

  132. It made sense.

  133. Of course it was biblical.

  134. And I'll have more to say about that

  135. in just a few minutes.

  136. But notice that his teaching was understandable

  137. because it was with understanding.

  138. It drew people to him.

  139. Yes, people came for the miracles.

  140. But even when there were no miracles,

  141. people still flocked to him in such numbers

  142. and with such aggressiveness

  143. that many times he had to either slip away

  144. or he had to get into a boat

  145. and go out into the water

  146. so people wouldn't crush him.

  147. That crowd of people was one of the things

  148. his enemies were attracted to.

  149. They didn't like the fact that Jesus drew the crowds.

  150. They wanted to be noticed for their elegant talks,

  151. for their great-sounding prayers.

  152. Since they couldn't refute his teaching,

  153. they questioned and attacked his credentials.

  154. They said, in effect,

  155. Jesus doesn't know his letters.

  156. He doesn't know the alphabet.

  157. It could have been a slam,

  158. and I think they were not above that.

  159. It could have been saying,

  160. Jesus doesn't even know his ABCs.

  161. But in fact, Jesus had studied.

  162. And all of the children of those days

  163. were actually, well, at least all of the boys,

  164. maybe the girls.

  165. That's a little bit unclear.

  166. At least some of the girls went to school.

  167. All the boys went to school.

  168. And we can see,

  169. usually they went to the synagogue,

  170. and the rabbi of the synagogue would teach them.

  171. We can see that Jesus understood how to read.

  172. If we look over,

  173. I'm going to have you jumping around a little bit.

  174. Sorry, that's the way it is.

  175. Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  176. Look at Luke chapter 4, verse 16.

    Luke 4:16

  177. Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  188. Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  189. Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  190. And he came to Nazareth,

  191. where he had been brought up,

  192. and was his custom,

  193. he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day.

  194. He stood up to read.

  195. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him.

  196. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written.

  197. I'll just stop there.

  198. He goes on to read a very specific passage in the book of Isaiah

  199. that talked about the coming Messiah.

  200. It was a passage about him.

  201. Now, I want you to understand, just consider for a moment,

  202. how difficult that task is.

  203. Because it's easy for us to just say,

  204. well, so what, you know, Jesus read this part out of Isaiah.

  205. We have a scroll, a complete scroll of the book of Isaiah

  206. from about the time that Jesus lived.

  207. It's from the Dead Sea Scrolls.

  208. This scroll is 11 inches high.

  209. It is 24 feet long.

  210. It has about 54 columns that are about 6 inches wide each.

  211. Beginning to end.

  212. There are no punctuation marks in either Hebrew or Greek.

  213. I don't know if it was a Greek text or a Hebrew text.

  214. It could have been either.

  215. Both were available at that time

  216. and both were read in the synagogues.

  217. Okay?

  218. But let me just...

  219. I know more about Greek,

  220. so let me just give you the picture if it were a Greek one.

  221. Okay?

  222. If it were a Greek text,

  223. there are no capital letters.

  224. There are no spaces between the words.

  225. Okay?

  226. It is simply a 24 foot wide piece of parchment

  227. that has letters on like a giant word find.

  228. Okay?

  229. Jesus opens the text to exactly the place

  230. and he reads the message that he wants them to get

  231. that he is the coming Messiah.

  232. The closest that we can come to it

  233. those of you who still use a printed Bible,

  234. I really like using my electronic one.

  235. It has lots of advantages.

  236. There's only one thing I don't like about it

  237. is when I was carrying a paper Bible

  238. and after I'd used it for several years,

  239. I could say,

  240. there's a text I'm looking for.

  241. I have no idea what the reference is,

  242. but it's on the left-hand side of the page

  243. about halfway down.

  244. Okay?

  245. That's what Jesus did.

  246. Does that happen with a brand new Bible

  247. just out of the box?

  248. It does not.

  249. It happens from spending time in it.

  250. And so, we see that Jesus had a familiarity

  251. with God's Word that marked his teaching

  252. as being with an understanding of the Father

  253. and his perfect will.

  254. What were his enemies actually saying?

  255. They might have been this cut

  256. that he doesn't even know his ABCs.

  257. They were also certainly saying,

  258. well, he doesn't know what Rabbi so-and-so said.

  259. I bet he has never heard of Rabbi so-and-so.

  260. You're right.

  261. Jesus didn't know

  262. what the John MacArthur's

  263. or the John Piper's

  264. or the Alistair Beggs

  265. or even the Joe Crawford's

  266. of his day said,

  267. but he knew the Father's will

  268. and he did it continuously.

  269. Second thing is Jesus taught with authority.

  270. This fact shows up in several places

  271. and I want you to look at two of them

  272. really briefly with me.

  273. The first one is in Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  274. Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  275. I'm going to go ahead and read it.

  276. You can look at it or you can just listen.

  277. 54 and 56.

  278. And coming to his hometown,

  279. he taught them in the synagogue

  280. so that they were astonished and said,

  281. where did this man get this wisdom

  282. and these mighty works?

  283. Is not this the carpenter's son?

  284. Is not his mother called Mary?

  285. Are not his brothers James and Joseph

  286. and Simon and Judas?

  287. Are not all his sisters with us?

  288. Where did this man get all these things?

  289. In other words,

  290. here are the people,

  291. his neighbors,

  292. his friends from Nazareth,

  293. and when he goes there

  294. and he teaches,

  295. they are just surprised.

  296. They're amazed at the teaching

  297. that he gives.

  298. Where did he get this ability to teach?

  299. John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  300. Back to where we were,

  301. but just a few verses ahead.

  302. The pastor will be talking about this

  303. in a few weeks.

  304. Here's what happened.

  305. The scribes and the Pharisees

  306. sent their hooligans,

  307. their thugs,

  308. to go get Jesus.

  309. Go get him,

  310. bring him here.

  311. We'll arrest him quietly.

  312. You guys just go get him

  313. and kind of kidnap him at night

  314. if you have to.

  315. The thugs,

  316. the officers,

  317. went to find Jesus

  318. and they heard him teaching.

  319. They come back to the Pharisees

  320. who sent them

  321. and they said,

  322. where is he?

  323. We just stay on a little task.

  324. Just go arrest this guy.

  325. They come back and they say,

  326. but you never heard anybody

  327. teach like that before.

  328. Jesus taught with authority.

  329. It stood out.

  330. It made a difference.

  331. Interesting,

  332. just an aside.

  333. Notice the thing

  334. that when that happens,

  335. what the scribes and Pharisees

  336. are really concerned about.

  337. Well, you didn't see

  338. any of us there, did you?

  339. It's almost like,

  340. I hope there wasn't anybody there

  341. that we would know.

  342. Jesus was different

  343. than the scribes and Pharisees

  344. because he quoted

  345. not men, but God.

  346. His teaching was never marked

  347. by references

  348. to the great rabbis

  349. of his day

  350. or the past.

  351. He did not have to rely

  352. on the understanding

  353. of other people

  354. because he had perfect

  355. understanding

  356. of his Father's word.

  357. In fact,

  358. when John said,

  359. in the beginning

  360. was the word,

  361. the word was with God,

  362. and the word was God,

  363. and the word became flesh,

  364. he was saying

  365. that Jesus Christ

  366. is the perfect imprint

  367. of the Father.

  368. Jesus was not only different

  369. from the scribes

  370. and Pharisees

  371. in his teachings,

  372. but he was also different

  373. from the prophets

  374. in his teachings.

  375. The prophets could say,

  376. thus saith the Lord.

  377. And throughout the prophets,

  378. the minor prophets

  379. in particular,

  380. you find them

  381. over and over

  382. saying that this,

  383. we are simply the messenger

  384. and here's the message.

  385. We're going through

  386. some of these minor prophets

  387. in my small group.

  388. And Amos, Obadiah,

  389. Nahum, Micah,

  390. every one of them,

  391. there's over and over

  392. this emphasis,

  393. thus saith the Lord,

  394. thus saith the Lord.

  395. Jesus' words and deeds

  396. are so much different

  397. because they're at one

  398. with the Father.

  399. Not only because

  400. of the unqualified obedience

  401. that Christ had,

  402. but perhaps even more importantly,

  403. because he spoke

  404. and taught

  405. with the authority

  406. of the Father.

  407. Jesus doesn't say,

  408. thus saith the Lord.

  409. He says,

  410. I say unto you.

  411. You can see it

  412. probably the best place,

  413. the Sermon on the Mount,

  414. where over and over again,

  415. Matthew chapter 5

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  416. through chapter 7,

  417. over and over again,

  418. he says,

  419. you have heard it said,

  420. but I say to you.

  421. A direct instruction

  422. authoritative

  423. declaration.

  424. So Jesus answered them,

  425. my teaching is not mine,

  426. but his who sent me.

  427. As I was studying that

  428. over and over this week,

  429. I kept thinking of the fact

  430. that from his temptation

  431. in the wilderness

  432. to the cross,

  433. Jesus' speech

  434. was sprinkled

  435. with the written word of God,

  436. the Old Testament.

  437. In the wilderness,

  438. three times,

  439. Satan tempts Jesus

  440. from a physical need

  441. to the attainment

  442. of personal glory.

  443. And each time,

  444. Jesus responds

  445. with a quotation

  446. from the book of Deuteronomy.

  447. From the cross,

  448. in his dying moments,

  449. the majority of the words

  450. that he spoke

  451. are quotations

  452. from either the Psalms

  453. or the book of Isaiah.

  454. He taught God's word

  455. and he lived it.

  456. John chapter 5,

    John 5:19

  457. verse 19,

  458. tells us that Jesus

  459. always does

  460. what the Father does.

  461. In fact,

  462. in the book of John alone,

  463. there's over 30 references

  464. to the fact that Jesus

  465. understood

  466. that he was on a mission

  467. and with a message

  468. from God.

  469. He wasn't throwing up

  470. new things

  471. and throwing out the old.

  472. He was fulfilling

  473. what God's perfect plan

  474. from the beginning,

  475. from the garden was.

  476. He's not a charlatan.

  477. He's not some kind

  478. of respected leader

  479. that inevitably

  480. mixed together

  481. different motives of,

  482. yeah, I want to serve God,

  483. but I'd also like

  484. to be recognized.

  485. In fact,

  486. he utterly rejected

  487. what might work

  488. or what might appear

  489. to be successful

  490. in favor of his

  491. Father's agenda.

  492. It talks about

  493. the characteristics

  494. of Jesus' teaching.

  495. But let me say

  496. definitively and clearly

  497. that the teaching

  498. of Jesus

  499. was and is

  500. understandable.

  501. It's not filled

  502. with lengthy quotations

  503. or complex words

  504. or distant,

  505. complicated,

  506. philosophical

  507. or theological

  508. ideas.

  509. Having said that,

  510. this passage

  511. that we're looking at,

  512. Jesus lays out

  513. what are the basic

  514. principles

  515. that are necessary

  516. necessary

  517. to be able

  518. to understand

  519. what he said,

  520. to be able

  521. to evaluate

  522. his teaching.

  523. Understanding

  524. and a goal.

  525. His understanding.

  526. What Jesus is saying

  527. in this passage

  528. in John chapter 7

    John 7:17

  529. verse 17,

  530. what he's saying

  531. is that the question

  532. of whether or not

  533. his teaching is true

  534. cannot be decided

  535. by rigorous

  536. debate procedures.

  537. It can't be decided

  538. by human logic.

  539. It's not determined

  540. by intelligence.

  541. There's a moral issue.

  542. Let me say it

  543. in a sentence.

  544. It'll come up

  545. on the screen

  546. and then I'll try

  547. to explain

  548. what I mean.

  549. Accepting or rejecting

  550. the claims

  551. of Jesus Christ

  552. is never a purely

  553. intellectual decision.

  554. It's a moral

  555. and spiritual

  556. decision.

  557. what is needed

  558. first and foremost

  559. obviously is the work

  560. of the Father in us.

  561. But what Jesus

  562. is talking about here

  563. is the human side

  564. of it.

  565. The human side

  566. it's necessary

  567. in a right assessment

  568. of his teaching

  569. to choose

  570. to do God's will.

  571. Then you will

  572. find it out.

  573. Points not

  574. that someone

  575. has to attain

  576. some level

  577. of personal holiness

  578. or God approved

  579. level

  580. of moral

  581. perfection

  582. and then they

  583. can pass judgment

  584. on Jesus

  585. and his teaching.

  586. Rather the question

  587. is that a person

  588. must be fundamentally

  589. committed

  590. to doing

  591. God's will.

  592. When you think

  593. about it

  594. that's talking

  595. about a faith

  596. commitment.

  597. John chapter 6

    John 6:40

  598. verse 40

  599. for this is the will

  600. of my Father

  601. that whoever

  602. looks on the Son

  603. and believes in Him

  604. should have

  605. eternal life

  606. and I will raise

  607. him up

  608. on the last day.

  609. Let's bring that down.

  610. Maybe you're here

  611. this morning

  612. and you're thinking

  613. I'm just not sure

  614. that I understand

  615. everything.

  616. I'm not sure

  617. that I understand

  618. everything that Jesus

  619. taught.

  620. I'm not sure

  621. I understand

  622. anything in the Bible.

  623. I'm not even sure

  624. that I believe

  625. what He said.

  626. Not even positive

  627. that He existed.

  628. Certainly not

  629. that He was

  630. who He said He was.

  631. Jesus is saying

  632. the problem

  633. is not your

  634. intellectual ability.

  635. It's not

  636. your formal training.

  637. It's not because

  638. you have doubts

  639. or questions.

  640. The problem

  641. is not that

  642. you need someone

  643. to explain it

  644. to you better.

  645. The problem

  646. is your rebellious

  647. nature.

  648. You're unwilling

  649. to do God's will

  650. in God's way.

  651. You're unwilling

  652. to submit to Him.

  653. To turn from

  654. your sin

  655. to put your trust

  656. in Christ.

  657. And until you

  658. do that,

  659. until you cry out

  660. to God

  661. to cleanse your heart,

  662. to give you

  663. repentance

  664. and to remove

  665. the unbelief,

  666. you put your trust

  667. in Christ,

  668. there's nothing

  669. else that really

  670. matters.

  671. The goal

  672. of this understanding

  673. must be much more

  674. than just fire

  675. insurance,

  676. not just to keep us

  677. out of hell.

  678. it must be more

  679. than intellectual

  680. accomplishment.

  681. I know more

  682. of the Bible

  683. verses than

  684. anybody else.

  685. In fact,

  686. I've got three

  687. Timothy words.

  688. Okay?

  689. I don't have any.

  690. And I appreciate

  691. the kids that do,

  692. but that's not

  693. going to get you

  694. to heaven.

  695. It's only an

  696. acceptance of

  697. Jesus Christ.

  698. It's only

  699. desiring

  700. and having

  701. the goal

  702. to bring glory

  703. to God.

  704. Jesus says,

  705. the one who

  706. seeks the glory

  707. of him who sent

  708. me is true,

  709. and in him

  710. there is no

  711. falsehood.

  712. And Jesus is

  713. clearly speaking

  714. about himself

  715. here.

  716. That there's no

  717. falsehood in him,

  718. and there's no

  719. falsehood in him,

  720. because he

  721. completely

  722. acknowledges

  723. and obeys

  724. the Father.

  725. But it has

  726. to come from

  727. us too.

  728. The confessions

  729. of the early

  730. church,

  731. which sometimes

  732. I think we

  733. should pay a

  734. little more

  735. attention to,

  736. have it right.

  737. What's the

  738. main goal?

  739. What's the

  740. chief end

  741. of man?

  742. Some of you

  743. might know

  744. the answers

  745. to these

  746. questions.

  747. The chief

  748. end of man

  749. is to glorify

  750. God and enjoy

  751. him forever.

  752. Perhaps you're

  753. here today as

  754. a believer,

  755. and you feel

  756. stuck.

  757. You do

  758. occasionally read

  759. your Bible,

  760. but when you

  761. do, you don't

  762. really get

  763. anything out of

  764. it.

  765. You can't

  766. really say that

  767. you've learned

  768. anything about

  769. God since you

  770. were in

  771. children's

  772. programs.

  773. You have

  774. some success,

  775. at least for a

  776. time, of

  777. controlling the

  778. sin in your

  779. life.

  780. But it

  781. comes back to

  782. the same

  783. areas over

  784. and over

  785. and over

  786. again.

  787. Jesus tells

  788. us how

  789. falsehood

  790. enters us.

  791. We seek

  792. our own

  793. glory rather

  794. than the

  795. glory of

  796. the one

  797. who sent

  798. him.

  799. Maybe you

  800. want to

  801. look good

  802. in front

  803. of your

  804. spouse,

  805. in front

  806. of your

  807. children,

  808. children.

  809. Maybe you

  810. want to

  811. look good

  812. in front

  813. of your

  814. parents,

  815. for

  816. coworkers,

  817. classmates,

  818. neighbors.

  819. You want

  820. people to

  821. recognize you

  822. as being a

  823. pretty good

  824. Christian.

  825. Maybe you

  826. just want to

  827. look good in

  828. your own

  829. eyes.

  830. The way to

  831. grow in

  832. understanding

  833. God and

  834. his will

  835. is by

  836. making it

  837. your goal

  838. to do

  839. his will

  840. for his

  841. glory.

  842. Psalm 40,

    Psalms 40:8

  843. verse 8,

  844. I delight

  845. to do

  846. your will,

  847. oh my

  848. God.

  849. Your law

  850. is within

  851. my heart.

  852. You know,

  853. that almost

  854. always calls

  855. for a

  856. humbling.

  857. We humble

  858. ourselves

  859. before God

  860. and before

  861. others.

  862. we say

  863. to him,

  864. it is my

  865. own selfish

  866. pride,

  867. my humility,

  868. I need to

  869. confess my

  870. sin,

  871. I need to

  872. repent,

  873. and I need

  874. to change.

  875. Jesus'

  876. teaching was

  877. unique.

  878. It was

  879. understandable

  880. when we

  881. come in

  882. obedience and

  883. faith.

  884. And finally,

  885. Jesus'

  886. teaching was

  887. gospel-focused.

  888. I want to

  889. read the

  890. passage.

  891. I know I'm

  892. already in

  893. trouble,

  894. so hang

  895. with me.

  896. Has not

  897. Moses given

  898. you the

  899. law,

  900. yet none

  901. of you

  902. keeps the

  903. law?

  904. Why do

  905. you seek

  906. to kill

  907. me?

  908. The crowd

  909. answered,

  910. you have

  911. a demon.

  912. Who is

  913. seeking to

  914. kill you?

  915. Jesus

  916. answered them,

  917. I did

  918. one work

  919. and you

  920. all marvel

  921. at it.

  922. Moses gave

  923. you circumcision,

  924. not that it

  925. was from

  926. Moses,

  927. but the

  928. fathers,

  929. and you

  930. circumcised

  931. a man on

  932. the Sabbath.

  933. If on

  934. the Sabbath

  935. a man

  936. receives

  937. circumcision,

  938. so that the

  939. law of

  940. Moses may

  941. not be

  942. broken,

  943. are you

  944. angry with

  945. me?

  946. Because on

  947. the Sabbath

  948. I made

  949. a man's

  950. whole body

  951. well?

  952. Do not

  953. judge by

  954. appearances,

  955. but judge

  956. with right

  957. judgment.

  958. Next week

  959. we're going

  960. to see the

  961. reaction of

  962. the people

  963. to Jesus'

  964. teaching,

  965. but the

  966. fact is

  967. that they

  968. do not

  969. react with

  970. surprise.

  971. They do

  972. not react

  973. with confusion.

  974. They don't

  975. say,

  976. what in the

  977. world is he

  978. talking about?

  979. Here we

  980. are talking

  981. about how

  982. to know

  983. God's

  984. will,

  985. how to

  986. be able

  987. to judge

  988. Christ's

  989. teaching,

  990. how to

  991. understand

  992. all those

  993. things,

  994. and what

  995. does he

  996. do?

  997. He goes

  998. off talking

  999. about Moses.

  1000. For us,

  1001. that is what

  1002. it sounds

  1003. like,

  1004. but for

  1005. them,

  1006. that's not

  1007. what it

  1008. sounds like,

  1009. because Jesus

  1010. starts with

  1011. what I call

  1012. a duck

  1013. question.

  1014. Okay?

  1015. Duck

  1016. questions are

  1017. questions that

  1018. you do not

  1019. need to ask

  1020. because you

  1021. already know

  1022. the answer.

  1023. Okay?

  1024. I'll give you

  1025. the perfect,

  1026. the best example

  1027. possible.

  1028. Moms,

  1029. your child is

  1030. there,

  1031. and you say,

  1032. would you like

  1033. an ice cream

  1034. cone?

  1035. And the child

  1036. says,

  1037. Mom,

  1038. you know,

  1039. I've really been

  1040. thinking about it.

  1041. I've kind of had

  1042. a lot of junk

  1043. food lately.

  1044. I really think

  1045. you probably

  1046. should give me

  1047. something that's

  1048. a little more

  1049. healthy.

  1050. Why don't you

  1051. give me some

  1052. vegetables,

  1053. and I'll just

  1054. pass on the

  1055. ice cream today.

  1056. That's probably

  1057. not what they

  1058. say,

  1059. right?

  1060. Well,

  1061. Jesus is

  1062. saying,

  1063. didn't Moses

  1064. give you the

  1065. law?

  1066. And they're

  1067. saying,

  1068. well,

  1069. of course he

  1070. did,

  1071. you dummy.

  1072. We know

  1073. that.

  1074. And Jesus

  1075. turns it right

  1076. around and he

  1077. said,

  1078. but you don't

  1079. obey it.

  1080. Why was it

  1081. so significant?

  1082. Because Jesus'

  1083. opponents prided

  1084. themselves on

  1085. knowing God's

  1086. will.

  1087. They thought,

  1088. yes,

  1089. we got that

  1090. down.

  1091. We know

  1092. God's will,

  1093. and the

  1094. way we

  1095. know it

  1096. is we

  1097. know the

  1098. law.

  1099. Jesus

  1100. says,

  1101. not a

  1102. single one

  1103. of you

  1104. obeys it.

  1105. He's

  1106. pointing out

  1107. to them

  1108. that mere

  1109. possession of

  1110. the law

  1111. can never

  1112. guarantee

  1113. sanctity.

  1114. And in

  1115. fact,

  1116. possession of

  1117. the law

  1118. without

  1119. obedience to

  1120. the law

  1121. is the

  1122. path of

  1123. condemnation.

  1124. The law

  1125. is the

  1126. school teacher

  1127. that shows

  1128. us our

  1129. need for

  1130. Christ.

  1131. Jesus

  1132. moves directly

  1133. from here

  1134. to reveal

  1135. the hearts

  1136. of the

  1137. leaders by

  1138. reminding

  1139. them of

  1140. their actions.

  1141. Just six

  1142. months earlier

  1143. in John

    John 5 chapter mention

  1144. chapter 5,

  1145. he heals

  1146. a man and

  1147. they immediately

  1148. want to kill

  1149. him.

  1150. Now here

  1151. he is at

  1152. the feast

  1153. of tabernacles.

  1154. I got to

  1155. quickly explain.

  1156. Feast of

  1157. tabernacles.

  1158. So you know

  1159. what this is.

  1160. This is the

  1161. time when the

  1162. people of

  1163. Israel celebrated

  1164. the fact that

  1165. God brought

  1166. them out of

  1167. the land of

  1168. Egypt and

  1169. he put them

  1170. into their

  1171. own land,

  1172. a place of

  1173. rest and

  1174. peace.

  1175. I don't

  1176. know why

  1177. we,

  1178. my grandmother

  1179. took me to

  1180. church when I

  1181. was a child.

  1182. I don't

  1183. remember hardly

  1184. anything.

  1185. Okay?

  1186. Didn't make an

  1187. impact on me,

  1188. I'm afraid,

  1189. until later

  1190. in my life

  1191. when my

  1192. life was a

  1193. mess and I

  1194. thought,

  1195. oh wow,

  1196. I went to

  1197. church when I

  1198. was little,

  1199. maybe I

  1200. should go

  1201. back there.

  1202. But anyway,

  1203. here is this

  1204. feast of

  1205. tabernacles.

  1206. The one thing I

  1207. do remember

  1208. is for some

  1209. reason our

  1210. Sunday school

  1211. teacher had us

  1212. make tabernacles.

  1213. They had us

  1214. make these

  1215. little tents

  1216. out of

  1217. branches and

  1218. stuff.

  1219. I have no

  1220. idea why.

  1221. But it

  1222. did leave an

  1223. impact on

  1224. me.

  1225. That's what

  1226. happened.

  1227. What they

  1228. had was a

  1229. national

  1230. camping day.

  1231. They all

  1232. took their

  1233. tents from

  1234. wherever they

  1235. lived,

  1236. they went to

  1237. Jerusalem,

  1238. they set the

  1239. tents up,

  1240. or sometimes

  1241. they were just

  1242. lean-tos,

  1243. okay?

  1244. They set them

  1245. up in the

  1246. streets of

  1247. Jerusalem and

  1248. they prayed and

  1249. worshipped God

  1250. for delivering

  1251. them out of the

  1252. house of bondage

  1253. and bringing them

  1254. into a land of

  1255. plenty.

  1256. it's a picture

  1257. of redemption.

  1258. And that's

  1259. where Jesus

  1260. is.

  1261. He's right

  1262. there in

  1263. Jerusalem

  1264. teaching.

  1265. And he

  1266. brings up

  1267. Moses.

  1268. There's a

  1269. message here.

  1270. Jesus says

  1271. the healing of

  1272. the man on

  1273. the Sabbath was

  1274. a cleansing of

  1275. the whole man.

  1276. And just like

  1277. the partial

  1278. cleansing that

  1279. circumcision is

  1280. supposed to

  1281. illustrate,

  1282. the cutting off,

  1283. removal of the

  1284. condemnation of

  1285. the world and

  1286. the corruption of

  1287. the world and

  1288. the making his

  1289. children his own

  1290. and marking them

  1291. out as his.

  1292. Just like that

  1293. circumcision

  1294. overruled a

  1295. strict keeping of

  1296. the Sabbath,

  1297. Jesus says the

  1298. complete healing of

  1299. the man overrules

  1300. the strict keeping

  1301. of the Sabbath.

  1302. Because the

  1303. Sabbath was made

  1304. for man,

  1305. not man for the

  1306. Sabbath.

  1307. Jesus'

  1308. healing of that

  1309. man then becomes

  1310. a fulfillment

  1311. of Old Testament

  1312. circumcision.

  1313. redemption of

  1314. On the very

  1315. day that

  1316. served as a

  1317. sign of God's

  1318. Old Testament

  1319. purpose of

  1320. redemption and

  1321. rest.

  1322. Jesus'

  1323. reasoning is

  1324. insistent that

  1325. his activity is

  1326. fulfillment of

  1327. that redemptive

  1328. purpose of God.

  1329. By the statement,

  1330. he's making the

  1331. point that his

  1332. teaching, his

  1333. miracles, his

  1334. activity is the

  1335. fulfillment of the

  1336. redemptive purposes

  1337. of God.

  1338. Finally, in their

  1339. approach to God's

  1340. will, if it were

  1341. one where they

  1342. were one of faith,

  1343. they would soon

  1344. discern that Jesus

  1345. is not a Sabbath

  1346. breaker but the one

  1347. who fulfills both

  1348. the Sabbath and

  1349. circumcision.

  1350. The problem,

  1351. however, is really

  1352. that they have no

  1353. relationship with

  1354. God.

  1355. They know the

  1356. law of Moses,

  1357. but there's no

  1358. relationship there.

  1359. And Jesus points

  1360. this out to them

  1361. and in so doing,

  1362. he brings them to

  1363. the point of

  1364. decision.

  1365. He says,

  1366. righteous judgment

  1367. results from

  1368. right relationship.

  1369. relationship.

  1370. So how about you?

  1371. Righteous judgments

  1372. come from right

  1373. relationship.

  1374. Have you come to

  1375. the place where you

  1376. have a personal

  1377. relationship with

  1378. Jesus Christ?

  1379. Have you come to

  1380. the place where your

  1381. relationship with

  1382. Christ so impacts

  1383. you that when you

  1384. read the Bible,

  1385. it's not, oh,

  1386. this stuff doesn't

  1387. make any sense,

  1388. but it's, that's my

  1389. Savior.

  1390. do you seek to

  1391. obey God?

  1392. Are you trying to

  1393. change?

  1394. Pastor Kenoyer has

  1395. been saying a lot

  1396. recently, and it's

  1397. exactly true, you

1398. don't have to stay the

  1399. way you are.

  1400. You know what the

  1401. sad thing is?

  1402. Most people that I've

  1403. come into contact

  1404. with in ministry want

1405. to stay the way they

  1406. are.

  1407. They don't want to

  1408. change, at least not

1409. if it means giving up

1410. any of the sin that

  1411. they're involved in.

  1412. Do you want to

  1413. change?

  1414. The Holy Spirit is

1415. there to help you, to

  1416. bring you to that

  1417. change in life.

1418. But you have to say,

  1419. yes, I repent.

1420. I'm the one who is

  1421. wrong.

  1422. Let's pray.

  1423. Let's pray.

  1424. maybe this morning

  1425. that someone needs to

  1426. make a decision.

  1427. In the Sunday school

  1428. class this morning, we

  1429. were talking about the

  1430. fact that Paul labored

1431. and toiled to make his

  1432. people mature in

  1433. Christ.

  1434. Maturity is the goal.

  1435. Gracious Father, I pray

1436. that you would work in

  1437. people's hearts.

  1438. That if there's someone

1439. here who has just been

  1440. playing the games, they

  1441. think they know God's

  1442. will because they know

  1443. the law.

  1444. They think they know

  1445. God's will because they

  1446. look good.

1447. That you would reveal to

  1448. them where their heart

  1449. really is.

1450. And they would come to

  1451. the place of accepting

  1452. your son Jesus Christ.

  1453. Unfortunately, it's also

  1454. with believers.

1455. So many times we can

  1456. change, but we don't

  1457. want to.

1458. Father, I pray that you

  1459. would work in

  1460. individuals' hearts,

  1461. believers here today,

1462. to draw them to the cross

  1463. again, that they would

  1464. repent.

1465. By doing so, they would

1466. begin the process of you

  1467. changing them.

  1468. I ask it in Christ's name.

  1469. Amen.

  1470. Thank you.
