  1. Well, this is a first for me.

  2. I'm taking out my cell phone, and any of you who know me know my cell phone is, should I

  3. ! say this?

  4. It's possessed.

  5. And I say this because it sometimes rings at the most inopportune times, and I'm trusting

  6. that it won't do that.

  7. I have misplaced my watch, and I'm not relying on any of you to tell me what time it is.

  8. So, I'm going to rely on my cell phone to give me hints of, you know, how much beyond

  9. 10 after 12 I go.

  10. You think I'm joking.

  11. So, for me to say that I need your prayer would be something you've not heard before, and

  12. it's desperately true.

  13. Any and every time a man stands to preach the Word of God, it is right.

  14. It is biblical in that it fits the frame and instruction of Scripture that people should

  15. pray, both that their hearts are receptive to the Word of God, because I'm certain there

  16. are going to be things that are said today, as is in every case where the Word is taught,

  17. that there are things that affect your heart and life, and God intends for you to respond

  18. to them.

  19. And so there is a part of your responsibility of praying that the Word of God would have free

  20. course.

  21. And then it's appropriate also to pray for me that what I say is governed and controlled

  22. by the Spirit, is faithful to the text, and lifts up the Lord Jesus Christ.

  23. That's a burden that you have.

  24. Do you understand that?

  25. You have an obligation, a responsibility, and I'll say this carefully.

  26. Average people praying for average pastors enable exceptional preaching.

  27. Don't ever forget that.

  28. Don't ever forget that.

  29. So, let's turn in our Bibles to John chapter 7, verse 53.

    John 7:53

  30. Actually, I'm going to begin in my text, and this is not an original manuscript.

  31. They're gone.

  32. Nobody knows where they are.

  33. But I'm going to be reading in the English Standard Version, and some of you may also have a little parenthetical comment.

  34. I'm going to read that this morning, and it has bearing on the lesson.

  35. The earliest manuscripts do not include 753 through 811.

  36. They went each to his own house, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

  37. Early in the morning, he came again to the temple, and all the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them.

  38. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and placed her in the midst.

  39. They said to him, Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery.

  40. Now, in the law of Moses, in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such woman.

  41. What do you say?

  42. This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him.

  43. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

  44. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them,

  45. Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.

  46. And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground.

  47. And when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones.

  48. And Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.

  49. Jesus stood up and said to her, Woman, where are they?

  50. Has no one condemned you?

  51. She said, No one, Lord.

  52. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn you.

  53. Go, and from now on, sin no more.

  54. Let's pray.

  55. Our Father, this morning as we take this passage of Scripture in hand,

  56. we're mindful of the clear instruction and the explanation in the text,

  57. not just here, but what you tell us is that we are dependent upon you working in us

  58. for us to comprehend and apply the sweetness and beauty of this passage.

  59. And we confess that it's fairly easy for us this morning as we are gathered together

  60. to allow our minds to kind of slip over into autopilot

  61. and just kind of bear with the time that lies between now and our departure.

  62. Some of us perhaps speculating upon what we'll do after the service is over.

  63. Others of us actually scrolling through and thinking of things that we would be tempted

  64. to consider important, such as things we may want to buy or what we're trying to do on the holidays

  65. and all different kinds of little thoughts that have nothing to do with eternity.

  66. And so we're mindful this morning that we need your help

  67. to bring every thought into captivity to the glory of Christ.

  68. We need your help to hear the Word of God and apply it directly to our own lives.

  69. We need your help to grow to be more like the Lord Jesus Christ,

  70. that He who abides supreme would be glorified in our frail lives.

  71. And we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  72. Amen.

  73. Well, this morning I can't think of another time where I read you a little parenthetical statement

  74. at the very opening that really addressed the issue of a textual variant,

  75. and there's a reason for that.

  76. My general pattern of beginning a sermon is to read the passage,

  77. give you a little comment, an overview, and then pray, and then off we go to the work.

  78. Today, my complete confidence in the inerrancy and the preservation of Scripture

  79. prompts me to spend a little extra time this morning presenting a defense

  80. for my complete confidence in the authority and the reliability of the Word of God.

  81. And I have no hesitation in saying to you that what 2 Timothy 3, verse 16 says is entirely true.

    2 Timothy 3:16

  82. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and it's reliable, it's profitable,

  83. that the man of God may be completely furnished for every good work.

  84. And this passage is no exception.

  85. I think many of you, and I'm just curious, raise your hand,

  86. if you have a Bible that notes the fact that this is one of those passages that is a little atypical.

  87. How many? Wave that so I see.

  88. Okay?

  89. Most of you have some indication that this passage is one that doesn't appear in the earliest manuscripts.

  90. And that little announcement actually tells us something important.

  91. For one, it tells you that the translators of Scripture are painfully honest in mentioning what this text is

  92. and how it relates to the rest of the Scriptures,

  93. and they let you know the information that has governed most of the gathering

  94. and the including in the canon of the Scriptures.

  95. I appreciate their honesty, and I respect it a great deal.

  96. And for another, the note alerts you to one of two passages in the New Testament

  97. that are not as well documented in ancient Greek texts.

  98. The other one, does anybody know without looking?

  99. Does anybody know what the other one is?

  100. You know what it is?

  101. It is in what gospel?

  102. Stephen?

  103. Pardon?

  104. No, the woman at the well is there.

  105. I'm thinking about Mark chapter 16, the last couple verses.

    Mark 16 chapter mention

  106. And so, any of you want to speed over there and kind of take a look?

  107. There's another indication of an extended passage that doesn't have documentation in the earliest texts.

  108. Now, that being said, I could take time here to give you a lengthy overview of the way in which our Bible was put together

  109. and the rules that governed the verses and parts that have been included that you hold in your hand.

  110. And the fact of the matter is, is that our Bible that we actually have did not come, has not come to us from an original manuscript.

  111. Now, what do I mean by original?

  112. Case in point.

  113. Paul sat down and wrote a passage, Scripture, Ephesians or whatever it is, he used in Emanuensis in many cases,

  114. but that was sent directly to the…

  115. No copy of Paul's…

  116. I shouldn't say no copy.

  117. No original of Paul's letter exists.

  118. But there are countless, countless texts that are copies of the original,

  119. and those recopied portions are the things from which the Scriptures have been gathered that you and I hold in hand.

  120. And translators, eventually, when they got together to translate the Bible,

  121. whether it was from Greek or from Hebrew into English or whatever language that they relied upon,

  122. what they did was they relied upon copies and they paid very careful attention to each word.

  123. Let's take, for example, they had 10 copies of Isaiah chapter 50.

    Isaiah 50 chapter mention

  124. Use that as an illustration.

  125. One of the things they wanted to check was to see that each word was the same in the 10 copies,

  126. so that there was a reliable accuracy across the…

  127. How many of you played telephone by any chance?

  128. You ever played telephone?

  129. I remember when I was…

  130. Steve, you're the guilty party on telephone.

  131. In the Steve Rice small group, we played telephone,

  132. and by the time it got…

  133. We were only six or seven people around the room,

  134. and by the time it got to the end of the…

  135. It's just a mess.

  136. Well, relying upon the complete accuracy of the translations,

  137. one of the things that the people who put together the Scriptures have done

  138. is they've very carefully matched up the different copies to see,

  139. are these words exactly the same in each one of the various copies?

  140. And that's one of the things they rely upon to guarantee the accuracy of the text.

  141. And where there are wording variations,

  142. and there are a couple of them, there are several,

  143. one of the things that the translators have always done is, for one,

  144. they give preference to the wording that comes from an earlier copy.

  145. If the copy was actually made in, let's say, 100 years after the apostle wrote it,

  146. it tends to be viewed as more reliable than a copy that was made 300 years later,

  147. by virtue of that common expression or expectation that the further down the food chain you go

  148. in playing telephone, probably the further you get from the real pieces.

  149. And so, preference is generally given to those that are earlier copies.

  150. Second thing that is given preference is when the wording appears to be the same

  151. in most copies.

  152. It only is a variant in maybe one of 100 copies.

  153. Another preference is given in matching what the verse says

  154. against all of the rest of the record of Scripture.

  155. And that's one of the things that I'm going to rely on this morning

  156. as we work our way through to understand this passage.

  157. We're going to discover that what this passage teaches us about Jesus

  158. is absolutely consistent with the rest of the record of Scripture.

  159. I want to tell you something.

  160. One of the real tests of the authenticity of a translation

  161. is the doctrinal clarity with which it puts things out in front of you.

  162. Whether you're reading the Scriptures in English or Hindi or Spanish or Latin,

  163. whatever it is, if it is the Scripture,

  164. it's going to present the same doctrine across the spectrum.

  165. Does that make sense?

  166. In fact, people come to me, they kind of get wigged out,

  167. and, Pastor, you're not using the King James Version,

  168. and it is the one version that has God's absolute reliable stamp on,

  169. and my rebuttal is this.

  170. Okay, so tell me, which doctrine does ESV get wrong?

  171. No, it doesn't.

  172. And so when people are weighing,

  173. well, this John 8 passage,

  174. it doesn't appear in some of the manuscripts,

  175. but is it consistent with the record of Scripture

  176. and the picture we have of the Lord Jesus Christ?

  177. So since our passage doesn't appear in the earliest manuscripts,

  178. allow me to pose several questions

  179. that I gathered this week in reading one of the comments

  180. that John MacArthur made.

  181. He said this,

  182. Do these verses teach truth that violates any other passage of Scripture?

  183. And the answer is no.

  184. No.

  185. Second,

  186. do they, in fact, corroborate other passages in Scripture

  187. and substantiate it?

  188. The answer is yes.

  189. And keep your finger there in John

  190. and turn back to John 3, verse 17.

    John 3:17

  191. We have a very interesting picture here.

  192. It's not going to appear on the screen.

  193. Sometimes I'll say something and people look,

  194. and is that going to come up?

  195. This time it's,

  196. how many of you notice that I sit down here and make notes?

  197. I make notes in the morning,

  198. Sunday morning as I'm praying and preparing.

  199. What I have in hard copy and what happens at the pulpit

  200. always gets kind of amended a little bit.

  201. John 3, 17.

  202. Listen to it.

  203. It says this,

  204. For God did not send His Son into the world

  205. to condemn the world,

  206. but in order that the world might be saved through Him.

  207. That passage gives us a picture of Jesus

  208. behaving in John 8

  209. in complete consistency

  210. to what we read in John 3, verse 17.

    John 3:17

  211. So the question, the second question was,

  212. does what happens in this passage

  213. corroborate other Scripture and substantiate?

  214. And we see that to be true.

  215. And the third question is this,

  216. is there definite and conclusive evidence

  217. that this passage should be left out?

  218. And the answer is no.

  219. So with that said,

  220. we want to dig into this passage with complete confidence,

  221. believing that it tells us the truth about the Lord Jesus

  222. and teaches us lessons that you and I,

  223. sitting here this morning,

  224. need to learn.

  225. Let's look first of all, if you will,

  226. going back to John 8,

  227. that this passage gives us a very interesting little picture

  228. of our Lord Jesus,

  229. the flesh,

  230. the part,

  231. the word incarnate part.

  232. Okay?

  233. And so you look here in John 8,

  234. and it says there in verse 53 of 7,

  235. actually it says,

  236. they went each to his own house,

  237. but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

  238. Let me have you turn back to a passage that I do mark for you,

  239. and I want you to look at Isaiah chapter 42,

    Isaiah 42 chapter mention

  240. Isaiah chapter 42,

    Isaiah 42:1–4

  241. verse 1 through 4.

  242. Behold my servant,

  243. whom I uphold,

  244. my chosen,

  245. in whom my soul delights,

  246. I have put my spirit upon him.

  247. He will bring forth justice to the nations.

  248. He will not cry aloud,

  249. or lift up his voice,

  250. or make it heard in the street.

  251. A bruised reed he will not break,

  252. and a faintly burning wick he will not quench.

  253. He will faithfully bring forth justice.

  254. He will not grow faint,

  255. or be discouraged,

  256. till he has established justice in the earth,

  257. and the coastlands wait for his law.

  258. What we find in this passage,

  259. going back to Isaiah,

  260. is a picture of the Lord Jesus

  261. that was contrary to the popular expectation

  262. of what the Messiah would be like.

  263. You know,

  264. they expected Jesus,

  265. when he came into Jerusalem,

  266. if he was doing it according to their plan,

  267. he would have been riding on a white charger,

  268. he would have been strong,

  269. and mighty,

  270. and powerful,

  271. and he would have absolutely stomped out

  272. those nasty Romans,

  273. and dealt with all the sin in the world.

  274. You know,

  275. bang!

  276. By the way,

  277. when he comes back the second time,

  278. guess what's going to happen?

  279. It will happen,

  280. right?

  281. When Jesus comes back

  282. to bring his kingdom

  283. and reign,

  284. it is going to be glorious,

  285. and there will be no relaxed kind of,

  286. he is going to come with authority and power.

  287. But this time,

  288. he came,

  289. how?

  290. On a donkey.

  291. Slow,

  292. easy,

  293. gentle.

  294. And as we open up this passage,

  295. we find that

  296. after that grand and glorious announcement

  297. in John chapter 7,

    John 7 chapter mention

  298. I am the one that you can rely on

  299. to give you salvation,

  300. and also to make you a satisfier of other people,

  301. everybody's heard the message

  302. and they go off to go to bed.

  303. Maybe sit around the small little living room

  304. that they had in those ancient homes,

  305. and it was a pretty impressive day

  306. that we had today,

  307. and Jesus was in top form.

  308. Did you notice how he made that wonderful announcement

  309. and blah, blah, blah,

  310. and eventually,

  311. well, good night,

  312. see you tomorrow,

  313. I love you,

  314. blah, blah,

  315. and off they went to sleep.

  316. What did we learn about Jesus?

  317. Look there at Romans 8,

  318. at John chapter 8, verse 1,

    John 8:1

  319. but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

  320. The throng went home.

  321. What did Jesus do?

  322. It says that he went out to the Mount of Olives.

  323. We know from Luke

  324. that Jesus often went to the Mount of Olives.

  325. It was his custom,

  326. is what Luke tells us.

  327. And we know that it was a place of prayer,

  328. and I think it is fair for us to anticipate that,

  329. or to at least speculate,

  330. that one of the things that Jesus did

  331. when he retired to that quiet place

  332. is he spent time in prayer.

  333. But I want you to understand also

  334. that when Jesus went to the Mount of Olives,

  335. he also went there to rest

  336. because he was very human.

  337. And so just imagine that

  338. instead of demanding to be housed

  339. in a spectacular fashion

  340. because he was, after all,

  341. the Messiah and the Lord of hosts,

  342. he goes up,

  343. and as would happen in that ancient culture,

  344. he took the heavy coat that he had,

  345. and he laid down on the ground

  346. and he rested there alone.

  347. That's a profoundly humbling picture

  348. of our Savior, isn't it?

  349. Remember what he said to his disciples

  350. when they said,

  351. well, I'm going to follow you.

  352. He says, let me tell you,

  353. foxes have holes,

  354. birds have nests,

  355. and the Son of Man has what?

  356. Nowhere to lay his head.

  357. Profoundly humble in his ministry.

  358. The next morning as Jesus got up,

  359. it tells us that he came into the temple.

  360. Look at verse 2.

  361. Early in the morning,

  362. he came again to the temple.

  363. All the people came to him.

  364. So I want you to imagine this scene as well.

  365. Here is Jesus.

  366. He's rested for the night.

  367. He gets up early,

  368. and he goes to the temple.

  369. What does he go to the temple to do?

  370. He goes to the temple to do that

  371. which was in his heart

  372. and was for the well-being of God's people.

  373. He said he came there to teach the word.

  374. By the way,

  375. I want you to understand

  376. that it must have been very unnerving

  377. for the scribes and Pharisees

  378. to see Jesus arriving at the temple again

  379. because what they knew

  380. is that people flocked to be around him

  381. to hear his teaching.

  382. Remember in John chapter 7

    John 7 chapter mention

  383. that when the police officers

  384. came back to the Sanhedrin

  385. and said,

  386. Did you bring him?

  387. No.

  388. Nobody ever spoke like he did.

  389. And here's Jesus in humility

  390. coming back into the temple

  391. just quietly,

  392. unassuming spirit,

  393. and he sits down

  394. and he begins to teach.

  395. Isn't that a little different

  396. than a lot of what we see today

  397. in those who are the heavy lifters

  398. in public,

  399. even Christian venues?

  400. So and so will be out on stage

  401. in five minutes.

  402. And here's Jesus kind of wanders in

  403. and sits down at the temple

  404. and just begins to teach.

  405. You see,

  406. you look there at John chapter 8 verse 2

    John 8:2

  407. and what you see is Jesus doing

  408. what he loved to do.

  409. He was always invested in gospel ministry.

  410. Everything was tied back

  411. to his ministry,

  412. to the hearts of people.

  413. That was his primary interest.

  414. And I've got to say something

  415. to you this morning.

  416. At the heart of what we are gathered together

  417. this morning to do,

  418. listen to me,

  419. is not kind of endure

  420. sitting here temporarily

  421. thinking that you're going to get points

  422. for showing up.

  423. We are here this morning

  424. to hear and learn

  425. about the character of our Savior

  426. so that our hearts could grow

  427. in our affection for him

  428. and that we,

  429. as a result in growing

  430. in our affection for him,

  431. may be growing to be more like him.

  432. Does that make sense?

  433. Everybody smile.

  434. Look at me for just a second.

  435. Please, please,

  436. look up, look up.

  437. The teaching of the word of God

  438. aims at helping you grow

  439. to be more like Jesus.

  440. Isn't that right?

  441. What does real growth look like?

  442. Let me make this point.

  443. You should be different spiritually

  444. tomorrow than you were today.

  445. Now, there's some of you

  446. that actually,

  447. if you were to put your finger on it,

  448. you're really just as grumpy

  449. and as unhappy today

  450. as you were five years ago.

  451. That's not the problem

  452. of the word of God.

  453. No reason for that.

  454. Jesus came and he taught the word

  455. and in his teaching,

  456. his intent was to see

  457. people's hearts touched

  458. by the hope

  459. and the sweetness

  460. of the gospel.

  461. So in this stage

  462. of Christ's affection for people,

  463. in come the scribes and Pharisees.

  464. You can keep them,

  465. see,

  466. they're dressed well.

  467. How many of you remember

  468. how the scribes and Pharisees dressed?

  469. You know what I mean?

  470. You can kind of pick their rank

  471. by their dress.

  472. Stomping in there.

  473. Here they come.

  474. Look at the scene there

  475. in verse 3.

  476. The scribes and the Pharisees

  477. brought a woman

  478. who had been caught

  479. in a dolpring.

  480. Ah,

  481. this next little piece

  482. is going to help us

  483. see Jesus resisting.

  484. Here he was,

  485. teaching,

  486. unpretentious,

  487. unassuming,

  488. simple in his affection,

  489. and in come these arrogant

  490. self-confidence,

  491. full of them.

  492. How many of you don't like

  493. people who are overly

  494. impressed with themselves?

  495. There's something in us

  496. that resists arrogance.

  497. I mean,

  498. would you agree?

  499. We struggle with it every day.

  500. We look at it in the mirror,

  501. but when we really see it

  502. front and center,

  503. it's like,

  504. I can't take it,

  505. right?

  506. And so here come

  507. the scribes and Pharisees.

  508. Example A

  509. of how not to be.

  510. And they walk right there

  511. in front of Jesus.

  512. And,

  513. by the way,

  514. I thought about this.

  515. How many of you think

  516. they were leading her

  517. gently by the hand?

  518. One Pharisee on one side

  519. and another Pharisee

  520. on the other side.

  521. Why don't you come with us?

  522. We're going to take you

  523. to Jesus now.

  524. I don't think that's

  525. what happened.

  526. In fact,

  527. kind of,

  528. now there's no reason

  529. for actually saying

  530. anything definitively here,

  531. but I can't imagine

  532. that they probably

  533. weren't even holding

  534. on to her.

  535. You know,

  536. I mean,

  537. who,

  538. who of a Pharisee

  539. would hold the hand

  540. of a known adulterer?

  541. By the way,

  542. so that there's

  543. some textual support

  544. for my cautionary thought here,

  545. you'll remember

  546. over in Luke chapter 7,

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  547. I think that's where it is,

  548. 739.

  549. Remember,

  550. the Pharisee invites

  551. Jesus to dinner,

  552. and in comes a woman,

  553. and what?

  554. She puts her hands

  555. on the teacher.

  556. And what does,

  557. what does that Pharisee

  558. think to himself?

  559. How many remember?

  560. if he,

  561. if he were a prophet,

  562. he would know

  563. what kind of girl

  564. this is,

  565. right?

  566. Don't be touching me,

  567. you low life.

  568. I don't know for sure,

  569. but they probably

  570. had her roped up

  571. and dragged in there

  572. because,

  573. you know,

  574. they weren't putting

  575. hands on her,

  576. but then they bring her

  577. in front of Jesus,

  578. and they dump her there

  579. in front of Jesus,

  580. and here's what

  581. they have to say.

  582. Teacher,

  583. this woman

  584. has been caught

  585. in the act

  586. of adultery.

  587. Now,

  588. in the law,

  589. Moses commanded us

  590. to stone such a woman,

  591. so,

  592. what do you say?

  593. I can just imagine

  594. the committee meeting

  595. they had.

  596. I'm truthfully,

  597. you know.

  598. I can just imagine

  599. the committee meeting

  600. they had planning

  601. this particular

  602. little trap.

  603. So,

  604. what can we do

  605. with Jesus?

  606. Well,

  607. we've obviously

  608. got to catch him

  609. some kind of

  610. difficult predicament

  611. that is going

  612. to compromise

  613. the respect he has

  614. in our culture,

  615. and so,

  616. well,

  617. how can we do that?

  618. Oh,

  619. well,

  620. why don't we?

  621. And we do know,

  622. verse 6,

  623. they said this

  624. to test him.

  625. Now,

  626. by the way,

  627. test is not,

  628. how many of you

  629. have taken tests

  630. in which you really

  631. know that the teacher

  632. is interested

  633. in you passing?

  634. I suspicioned

  635. that that was

  636. never the case

  637. in my case,

  638. but the truth

  639. of the matter

  640. is that sometimes

  641. I got softballs

  642. and still missed them.

  643. But,

  644. you know,

  645. they were not

  646. interested in Jesus

  647. passing this test.

  648. I know that went

  649. right over top

  650. of some of you.

  651. It never went

  652. over top of me.

  653. But,

  654. here we go.

  655. They were trying

  656. to trap Jesus.

  657. And we know

  658. that from the passage.

  659. There are a couple

  660. things that are

  661. really giveaways

  662. on this.

  663. For one,

  664. we do know

  665. that they did not

  666. bring the man.

  667. Now,

  668. I'm not going to go

  669. into the biological

  670. issues of this,

  671. but I got to tell you

  672. that adultery

  673. is a two-party sport

  674. or a two-party sin.

  675. Let me rephrase that.

  676. We delete that

  677. sport word there,

  678. okay?

  679. It's a two-party sin.

  680. It's something

  681. that you can't do

  682. by yourself

  683. by definition.

  684. Now,

  685. for another,

  686. these scribes

  687. and Pharisees

  688. knew that stoning

  689. for adultery

  690. had not generally

  691. been practiced

  692. in Israel

  693. for over a thousand

  694. years.

  695. Now,

  696. I can't say that

  697. definitively,

  698. but scholars

  699. indicate that

  700. adultery

  701. was a fairly

  702. common problem

  703. in Israel.

  704. Israel.

  705. And if you were

  706. to read back

  707. through the kings

  708. and the prophets,

  709. et cetera,

  710. you will know

  711. that the record

  712. indicates that

  713. Israel was

  714. just about as

  715. wicked as

  716. other groups.

  717. there was another

  718. little piece

  719. that we have

  720. to recognize.

  721. The laws

  722. of Rome,

  723. which at this

  724. time were

  725. actually governing

  726. Israel,

  727. particularly in

  728. relationship to

  729. capital crime,

  730. did not

  731. prescribe

  732. execution

  733. for adultery.

  734. adultery.

  735. And so here

  736. they were,

  737. they were

  738. stepping into

  739. the setting

  740. and they were

  741. saying,

  742. oh,

  743. by the way,

  744. Jesus,

  745. in the law

  746. of Moses,

  747. it says that

  748. those who

  749. commit adultery

  750. should be

  751. stoned.

  752. Oh,

  753. what do you

  754. have to say?

  755. They knew that

  756. if Jesus said,

  757. well,

  758. stoned a girl,

  759. that he would

  760. have been charged

  761. with being the

  762. perpetrator of

  763. the crime.

  764. And if he'd

  765. said,

  766. not in your

  767. life,

  768. they would

  769. have said,

  770. you don't

  771. buy Moses?

  772. The dilemma

  773. is interesting

  774. because here,

  775. obey Moses

  776. or do what

  777. Jewish culture

  778. had been good

  779. doing for a

  780. thousand years

  781. or overstep

  782. Rome and

  783. go ahead.

  784. It's interesting

  785. how Jesus

  786. responded,

  787. right?

  788. In the face

  789. of these

  790. pompous,

  791. self-righteous,

  792. inflated egos,

  793. you can kind

  794. of hear them

  795. snorting,

  796. go ahead.

  797. tell us

  798. what you

  799. think.

  800. They're full

  801. of themselves.

  802. What does

  803. Jesus do?

  804. Did you get

  805. it?

  806. The most

  807. disrespectful

  808. thing,

  809. he doesn't

  810. pay attention.

  811. In fact,

  812. he gets down

  813. and writes

  814. on the ground.

  815. I mean,

  816. do you

  817. understand that

  818. writing in the

  819. dust and not

  820. even looking

  821. at the accuser

  822. is a supremely

  823. offensive thing?

  824. thing.

  825. It's like,

  826. I don't even

  827. have the time

  828. of day to

  829. pay attention

  830. to your

  831. super silly

  832. idea.

  833. Now,

  834. here's a little

  835. cautionary note.

  836. We don't know

  837. what Jesus

  838. wrote in the dirt.

  839. Do you follow

  840. that?

  841. I think it

  842. was Cecil B.

  843. DeMills and

  844. someone can text

  845. me later and

  846. let me know.

  847. I do have my

  848. phone.

  849. But,

  850. stop.

  851. Okay.

  852. I got a text

  853. here that says,

  854. it's currently

  855. 25.

  856. You go,

  857. pastor.

  858. Okay,

  859. got it.

  860. That's good.

  861. All right.

  862. I'm ready.

  863. Go.

  864. Okay.

  865. Stop.

  866. Here's the

  867. deal.

  868. You listening?

  869. We don't know

  870. what Jesus

  871. wrote in the

  872. dirt.

  873. All God's

  874. people said,

  875. amen.

  876. Let that be

  877. an instruction

  878. to you.

  879. If it isn't

  880. clear,

  881. don't go

  882. there.

  883. And,

  884. determine not

  885. to add to

  886. scripture.

  887. I don't know

  888. if it was Cecil

  889. B.

  890. DeMills or

  891. whoever it is,

  892. but I remember

  893. seeing the movie

  894. and the guy,

  895. the director,

  896. decided that it

  897. would help me

  898. understand who

  899. Jesus was or

  900. at least what

  901. was going on.

  902. Remember,

  903. if he kind of

  904. wrote in the

  905. dirt and he

  906. put the sins

  907. that they were

  908. committing and

  909. they were

  910. convicted by that.

  911. I'm not convinced

  912. at all that's

  913. what happened.

  914. In fact,

  915. I'm pretty

  916. certain that

  917. didn't happen.

  918. And I'll argue

  919. the case in just

  920. a moment.

  921. But my

  922. caution to you

  923. is this,

  924. is that where

  925. scripture isn't

  926. clear,

  927. be careful,

  928. be cautious,

  929. be disciplined

  930. even in what

  931. you imagine.

  932. So,

  933. now,

  934. notice what he

  935. did.

  936. He wrote in

  937. the dirt,

  938. and then,

  939. as they

  940. continued,

  941. we find him

  942. exposing sin.

  943. As they

  944. continued to

  945. ask him,

  946. he stood up

  947. and said to

  948. them,

  949. let him

  950. who is without

  951. sin among you

  952. be the first

  953. to throw a

  954. stone at

  955. her.

  956. The English

  957. translation,

  958. which says

  959. let,

  960. kind of

  961. misses the

  962. thrust of

  963. this passage,

  964. because what

  965. Jesus is actually

  966. saying is,

  967. all right,

  968. all right,

  969. why don't we

  970. allow,

  971. that's kind of

  972. the idea of

  973. let,

  974. is why don't

  975. we allow

  976. the one

  977. who is without

  978. sin to

  979. throw the

  980. first stone.

  981. Instead of

  982. falling into

  983. the trap

  984. that these

  985. scribes and

  986. Pharisees had

  987. so carefully

  988. put together,

  989. we find that

  990. he turns the

  991. tables on

  992. these men

  993. two ways.

  994. One,

  995. he challenges

  996. them to

  997. actually follow

  998. the law of

  999. Moses and

  1000. have the

  1001. direct witnesses

  1002. !

  1003. That's what

  1004. he said.

  1005. He was

  1006. saying,

  1007. hey,

  1008. listen,

  1009. the law

  1010. demands that

  1011. the witnesses

  1012. to the

  1013. crime be

  1014. directly

  1015. involved in

  1016. the execution.

  1017. And so

  1018. here,

  1019. these

  1020. Pharisees and

  1021. scribes had

  1022. brought this

  1023. woman caught

  1024. in the act,

  1025. and they're

  1026. standing there

  1027. saying,

  1028. well,

  1029. yeah,

  1030. should we

  1031. stone her?

  1032. And Jesus

  1033. said,

  1034. hey,

  1035. why don't

  1036. we allow

  1037. the person

  1038. who's without

  1039. sin to

  1040. throw the

  1041. first stone?

  1042. You do

  1043. it.

  1044. And in

  1045. the course

  1046. of the

  1047. argument,

  1048. what Moses'

  1049. law clearly

  1050. said is

  1051. that it's

  1052. not just

  1053. the woman

  1054. who is

  1055. guilty of

  1056. adultery

  1057. and deserves

  1058. the penalty.

  1059. So the

  1060. obvious question

  1061. to all those

  1062. who are sitting

  1063. around,

  1064. where's the

  1065. man?

  1066. Like I

  1067. said,

  1068. adultery

  1069. is not a

  1070. solo sin.

  1071. Well,

  1072. they had

  1073. to pass

  1074. on that

  1075. one.

  1076. But there's

  1077. another thing

  1078. that he

  1079. challenged

  1080. them to

  1081. do,

  1082. and that

  1083. was to

  1084. violate

  1085. Roman

  1086. law and

  1087. put

  1088. themselves

  1089. at risk.

  1090. I've got

  1091. to tell

  1092. you,

  1093. Rome was

  1094. not very

  1095. passive.

  1096. They were,

  1097. they were,

  1098. listen to me

  1099. very carefully

  1100. so you

  1101. understand this.

  1102. We live

  1103. in a day

  1104. where politicians

  1105. are all good

  1106. about talking

  1107. about things

  1108. and not doing

  1109. much that really

  1110. is of substance.

  1111. Do you follow

  1112. that?

  1113. I mean,

  1114. hey,

  1115. why don't we

  1116. have another

  1117. conference about

  1118. what to do

  1119. about terrorism,

  1120. right?

  1121. Let's talk

  1122. about it.

  1123. Rome was

  1124. really not

  1125. good about

  1126. talking more

  1127. than single

  1128. sentence

  1129. statements.

  1130. They would

  1131. come up to

  1132. a city and

  1133. say,

  1134. hey guys,

  1135. would you

  1136. like us to

  1137. take over

  1138. your government

  1139. and allow

  1140. you to be

  1141. subjects of

  1142. Rome?

  1143. Question.

  1144. Answer was

  1145. yes,

  1146. no.

  1147. If the answer

  1148. was no,

  1149. guess what

  1150. happened

  1151. to the

  1152. city?

  1153. It was,

  1154. the polite

  1155. word was

  1156. invested.

  1157. They built

  1158. a moat

  1159. around it

  1160. and they

  1161. kind of

  1162. just starved

  1163. it into

  1164. submission

  1165. and when

  1166. they were

  1167. absolutely

  1168. close to

  1169. absolute

  1170. disaster,

  1171. Rome would

  1172. go in there

  1173. and slaughter

  1174. them.

  1175. And those

  1176. that they

  1177. didn't

  1178. slaughter

  1179. would be

  1180. turned

  1181. into slaves.

  1182. And the

  1183. rumor would

  1184. get out

  1185. that it

  1186. wasn't good

  1187. to mess

  1188. with Rome.

  1189. And so

  1190. these Jewish

  1191. leaders knew

  1192. that anybody

  1193. who picked

  1194. up the first

  1195. stone and

  1196. threw it at

  1197. this woman

  1198. would be

  1199. on Rome's

  1200. hit list.

  1201. I'll pass.

  1202. I'll pass.

  1203. So how did

  1204. this thing

  1205. conclude?

  1206. You look

  1207. there and

  1208. it says

  1209. this,

  1210. he once

  1211. more bent

  1212. down and

  1213. wrote in

  1214. the dust.

  1215. Was that

  1216. a zinger

  1217. or not?

  1218. Hey,

  1219. I'm done.

  1220. Go for it.

  1221. And so

  1222. here's what

  1223. happens.

  1224. Nine,

  1225. and when

  1226. they heard

  1227. it,

  1228. they went

  1229. away one

  1230. by one

  1231. beginning

  1232. with the

  1233. older ones.

  1234. Joe Halsey

  1235. can perfectly

  1236. appreciate

  1237. this verse.

  1238. Joe has

  1239. been one

  1240. of our

  1241. younger

  1242. deacons.

  1243. And one

  1244. of the

  1245. things that

  1246. goes with

  1247. the younger

  1248. deacon is

  1249. that he

  1250. gets asked

  1251. first many

  1252. times.

  1253. Isn't

  1254. that right,

  1255. Joe?

  1256. How many

  1257. of you know

  1258. that the

  1259. Sanhedrin,

  1260. when they

  1261. made decisions,

  1262. they always

  1263. started with

  1264. the youngest.

  1265. Now,

  1266. what was

  1267. the logic

  1268. of that?

  1269. Does anybody

  1270. have an

  1271. idea?

  1272. When the

  1273. gray heads

  1274. weighed in

  1275. first,

  1276. it kind

  1277. of influenced

  1278. what?

  1279. The younger

  1280. guys.

  1281. And so

  1282. they would

  1283. work up

  1284. the ladder

  1285. according to

  1286. age.

  1287. In this

  1288. case,

  1289. who got

  1290. the memo

  1291. first that

  1292. they probably

  1293. ought not

  1294. be throwing

  1295. stones?

  1296. It was

  1297. the old

  1298. guys.

  1299. This is

  1300. not a

  1301. winning

  1302. proposition.

  1303. And they

  1304. also

  1305. probably,

  1306. and this is

  1307. speculation,

  1308. but they

  1309. probably

  1310. figured out

  1311. if they

  1312. had relied

  1313. upon normal

  1314. Sanhedrin

  1315. protocol and

  1316. let the

  1317. rookies go

  1318. first who

  1319. were full

  1320. of vinegar

  1321. at that

  1322. moment,

  1323. they'd been

  1324. picking up

  1325. stones and

  1326. the whole

  1327. mess would

  1328. have gone

  1329. through,

  1330. right?

  1331. So the

  1332. old guys

  1333. say,

  1334. I got

  1335. that one.

  1336. Bye.

  1337. I'm gone.

  1338. I'm done.

  1339. And out

  1340. they walked.

  1341. So,

  1342. I want to

  1343. close with

  1344. this.

  1345. I want you

  1346. to recognize

  1347. Jesus in

  1348. something about

  1349. second chances.

  1350. How did

  1351. Jesus deal

  1352. with this

  1353. woman?

  1354. For one,

  1355. he didn't

  1356. minimize her

  1357. sin.

  1358. Nor does

  1359. he overlook

  1360. our sin.

  1361. How do we

  1362. know that to

  1363. be true?

  1364. There in

  1365. verse 11,

  1366. after Jesus

  1367. says,

  1368. hey,

  1369. where are

  1370. they?

  1371. Has

  1372. no one

  1373. condemned

  1374. you?

  1375. She says,

  1376. no one,

  1377. Lord.

  1378. He says,

  1379. neither do I

  1380. condemn you.

  1381. Go,

  1382. and from

  1383. now on,

  1384. what?

  1385. Don't be a

  1386. repeat offender.

  1387. Don't be a

  1388. repeat offender.

  1389. And I

  1390. can't help

  1391. but think of

  1392. that passage

  1393. that I

  1394. recited earlier

  1395. in John

    John 3:17

  1396. chapter 3,

  1397. verse 17,

  1398. where it

  1399. says,

  1400. the Son

  1401. of Man

  1402. did not

  1403. come to

  1404. condemn,

  1405. but that

  1406. through him

  1407. the world

  1408. might be

  1409. saved.

  1410. Jesus

  1411. is in

  1412. the

  1413. business,

  1414. listen to

  1415. me carefully,

  1416. of offering

  1417. you an

  1418. opportunity

  1419. to repent

  1420. for your

  1421. sins.

  1422. But

  1423. offering

  1424. you that

  1425. opportunity

  1426. to repent

  1427. is not

  1428. the same

  1429. as

  1430. overlooking

  1431. your

  1432. sin.

  1433. Secondly,

  1434. I want

  1435. you to

  1436. understand

  1437. that Jesus

  1438. extended

  1439. mercy to

  1440. this woman,

  1441. and he

  1442. still extends

  1443. mercy.

  1444. He's in

  1445. the business

  1446. of giving

  1447. you an

  1448. opportunity.

  1449. I love

  1450. what it

  1451. says in

  1452. Romans

    Romans 2:4

  1453. chapter 2,

  1454. verse 4,

  1455. and I'm

  1456. just going

  1457. to recite

  1458. the passage

  1459. just for a

  1460. moment.

  1461. Here is

  1462. the apostle

  1463. talking about

  1464. God's

  1465. patience and

  1466. gentleness,

  1467. and there's

  1468. some of

  1469. you sitting

  1470. here this

  1471. morning.

  1472. The truth

  1473. of the

  1474. matter is

  1475. that you

  1476. are continuing

  1477. to draw

  1478. breath even

  1479. though you

  1480. openly resist

  1481. the sweetness

  1482. of the gospel.

  1483. And do you

  1484. know why

  1485. you're still

  1486. drawing breath?

  1487. I'll tell

  1488. you.

  1489. Not because

  1490. I know,

  1491. but because

  1492. the Bible

  1493. says he

  1494. is giving

  1495. you an

  1496. opportunity

  1497. to repent.

  1498. And by

  1499. the way,

  1500. the longer

  1501. and more

  1502. patient he

  1503. is in

  1504. that

  1505. opportunity,

  1506. the more

  1507. firm will

  1508. be your

  1509. eventual

  1510. dealings.

  1511. And so

  1512. let me say

  1513. this clearly.

  1514. Christ's

  1515. mercy,

  1516. and that's

  1517. what we see

  1518. here,

  1519. calls the

  1520. sinner to

  1521. repent

  1522. into a

  1523. new life.

  1524. God's

  1525. love.

  1526. I don't

  1527. know what

  1528. the heart

  1529. is that

  1530. you have.

  1531. I don't

  1532. know if

  1533. you're sitting

  1534. here this

  1535. morning and

  1536. you know

  1537. Christ as

  1538. your Savior,

  1539. or it may

  1540. be that

  1541. you're a

  1542. person who

  1543. grew up

  1544. with all

  1545. the vocabulary.

  1546. Do you

  1547. know what I

  1548. mean by

  1549. the vocabulary?

  1550. You got it

  1551. down pat.

  1552. But the

  1553. truth of the

  1554. matter is,

  1555. if you were

  1556. to die today

  1557. and God

  1558. were to say,

  1559. why should I

  1560. let you into

  1561. heaven?

  1562. You'd say,

  1563. well,

  1564. I've been a

  1565. pretty good

  1566. person.

  1567. Can I tell

  1568. you something?

  1569. It would

  1570. have been

  1571. squandering for

  1572. the life of

  1573. Christ to

  1574. die on the

  1575. cross if

  1576. you and I

  1577. could get

  1578. there by

  1579. being pretty

  1580. good.

  1581. What does

  1582. the Bible

  1583. say?

  1584. It says that

  1585. there is none

  1586. righteous,

  1587. no, not one.

  1588. There is none

  1589. that seeketh

  1590. after God.

  1591. And God

  1592. seeing the

  1593. moral bankruptcy

  1594. and the

  1595. darkness of

  1596. our heart

  1597. and the ease

  1598. with which we

  1599. deceive ourselves

  1600. sent Christ

  1601. into the world

  1602. to convict us

  1603. of our sin.

  1604. and to

  1605. bring us to

  1606. the point

  1607. like the

  1608. woman at

  1609. the well,

  1610. like Zacchaeus,

  1611. like the

  1612. thief on the

  1613. cross,

  1614. like the

  1615. woman taken

  1616. in adultery,

  1617. we stand

  1618. exposed for

  1619. the sinners

  1620. that we

  1621. really are.

  1622. And in

  1623. the face

  1624. of that

  1625. reality,

  1626. we cry

  1627. out and

  1628. say,

  1629. I

  1630. recognize

  1631. my sin

  1632. and my

  1633. offense

  1634. against

  1635. a holy

  1636. God.

  1637. And I

  1638. believe

  1639. Jesus

  1640. died in

  1641. my place

  1642. and satisfied

  1643. my debt

  1644. and I

  1645. believe in

  1646. what he

  1647. did for

  1648. me.

  1649. And I

  1650. claim his

  1651. promise and

  1652. his salvation

  1653. and his

  1654. power to

  1655. live a

  1656. different life.

  1657. Let's close

  1658. in prayer.

  1659. Father God,

  1660. this morning

  1661. as we lift

  1662. up the

  1663. sweetness

  1664. of our

  1665. Savior who

  1666. came into

  1667. the world

  1668. to save

  1669. sinners,

  1670. we are

  1671. here this

  1672. morning in

  1673. one of two

  1674. conditions.

  1675. There are

  1676. some here

  1677. this morning

  1678. that may

  1679. have had

  1680. all the

  1681. vocabulary,

  1682. pounded home

  1683. and grown up

  1684. in that just

  1685. the perfect

  1686. environment and

  1687. the truth of

  1688. matter is

  1689. they've never

  1690. come to

  1691. trust Christ,

  1692. break through

  1693. the deception

  1694. of the enemy

  1695. and help them

  1696. see their

  1697. desperate need

  1698. and call upon

  1699. the name of

  1700. the Lord in

  1701. whom alone

  1702. is salvation.

  1703. There are

  1704. others of us

  1705. here that know

  1706. Christ,

  1707. whose hearts

  1708. have found

  1709. that freedom

  1710. and that

  1711. forgiveness

  1712. and whose

  1713. hearts have

  1714. been lifted

  1715. out of the

  1716. miry pit

  1717. for the

  1718. purpose of

  1719. the glory

  1720. of the

  1721. Lord Jesus

  1722. Christ who

  1723. is the

  1724. Savior of

  1725. the world.

  1726. Given

  1727. His mercy,

  1728. given His

  1729. kindness,

  1730. given the

  1731. abundance of

  1732. His love,

  1733. there is

  1734. nothing that

  1735. we should

  1736. live for

  1737. apart from

  1738. Him.

  1739. We ask

  1740. that You

  1741. would work

  1742. in us to

  1743. make that

  1744. true.

  1745. And where

  1746. there is a

  1747. need for

  1748. repentance,

  1749. and for

  1750. a change

  1751. of direction

  1752. and affection,

  1753. we ask that

  1754. You would do

  1755. that to

  1756. Your glory.

  1757. And we

  1758. ask this in

  1759. Jesus' name.

  1760. Amen.

  1761. Let's stand

  1762. together as

  1763. we close.
