  1. I would like you to take your Bibles this morning and turn in them to Revelation chapter 5.

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  2. ! How many of you are into cold chills?

  3. ! I mean, you know, you get that little, just undeserved little rush of emotion on occasion.

  4. How many of you have those?

  5. Some of us leave, kind of let, you know, we run on a very straight line.

  6. I mean, everything's kind of mellow all the time, but others of us, it's like, whoosh,

  7. whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, you know.

  8. Anyway, I'm into cold chills, and I can't help but reflect on the passage this morning and

  9. the emotion that it has elicited in my own heart in study and in prayer as we think about

  10. the conclusion to this year, and we frame the Christmas story with communion.

  11. I want you to turn to this passage in Revelation chapter 5, and I want you to follow along with

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  12. me as I begin reading there in chapter 5, verse 1, and we will carry down to verse 8.

  13. Revelation chapter 5, verse 1.

    Revelation 5:1

  14. And I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll.

  15. And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look

  16. into it.

  17. And I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look

  18. into it.

  19. And one of the elders said to me, weep no more.

  20. Behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has conquered so that he can

  21. open the scroll and the seven seals.

  22. And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders, I saw a lamb

  23. standing as though it had been slain with seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits

  24. of God sent out into all the earth.

  25. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne.

  26. And when he'd taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before

  27. the lamb, each holding a harp and a golden bowl full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

  28. And they sang a new song, saying, worthy are you to take the scroll, to open the seals,

  29. for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language

  30. and people and nation.

  31. And you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.

  32. Let us pray.

  33. Father God, this morning as we come again in prayer, we do so because we know that apart

  34. from you we can do nothing.

  35. We're thankful for the blessing of being together this morning, and we're thankful in particular

  36. for the ministry of the indwelling spirit, for the blessing of being able to hold the

  37. word in our hand, for the privilege of being able to pray together that the word of God would

  38. have free course and that it would have an effect upon our lives, that our affections this

  39. morning would be stirred to glory in the Lord Jesus Christ and the sufficiency of His grace and salvation,

  40. that as we together consider Calvary and we consider what you have done for us,

  41. that our desires would be set on eternal things rather than things of this earth.

  42. that our time around the table, taking the elements that remind us of our Savior's sacrifice for us,

  43. would stir our hearts to look forward to the day that we will see you face to face and be like you.

  44. that our thinking about you and our interest in the day in which we will see you would cause us to live a life that brings glory to your name.

  45. So allow the word of God this morning and the work of the Spirit in the lives of your people to make a lasting difference.

  46. And we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  47. Well, as we take up the passage of Scripture this morning in Revelation chapter 5,

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  48. we have to admit that one of the basic principles of Bible study is that we pay attention to context.

  49. And context is always an important thing because it helps us frame the ministry of the Word of God

  50. and understand what we are actually looking at.

  51. And as we look at this passage this morning,

  52. I want you to kind of mark the fact that the book of Revelation is a book that kind of gives us a broad overview

  53. of the way in which the story ends.

  54. It tells us, and at one point in the book of Revelation,

  55. John the Apostle pens these words that the book of Revelation talks about things that had happened,

  56. things that are happening, and things that will happen.

  57. And so as we think about the book of Revelation,

  58. we understand that it is a wonderful and intriguing window

  59. through which God gives us a little picture into the future

  60. and helps us understand not only what the future is going to be about,

  61. but it really gives us a big picture of the grand theme of the whole Bible.

  62. It tells us things that we need to pay attention to.

  63. And really, when you stop and think about what is the central theme of Scripture,

  64. without question, we would say without a hesitation, it's Jesus Christ, isn't it?

  65. He is the center of the story, and the entire Scripture revolves around Him.

  66. So I want you to understand that as we pick up here in chapter 5,

  67. we find that the first three chapters of the book of Revelation have been given to a large degree

  68. in giving explicit instructions to the seven churches regarding their spiritual state.

  69. Following that, we have chapter 4 in which John the Apostle opens up

  70. and gives us a picture of the glory of heaven,

  71. and you would say in some sense that chapter 4 in particular is about God the Father.

  72. Woven into that is the ministry of the Holy Spirit and the presence of the Holy Spirit.

  73. And then we come to chapter 5, and it begins in a very interesting way

  74. because we have a question that is posed by an angel to John the Baptist, or John,

  75. regarding, okay, who can open the scroll?

  76. And the idea of having all of history kind of unfold in front of him,

  77. something that was dear to John's heart at the moment,

  78. he suddenly finds out that there is no immediate response to opening the scroll.

  79. And how does he handle it?

  80. How does he handle it?

  81. What does it tell us happens in the Scripture?

  82. Here's an adult man who is doing what?

  83. He's not sniffing. He is what?

  84. He's sobbing. He's crying.

  85. Loudly.

  86. Why is it? Because of his interest and affection

  87. in seeing what God was going to do

  88. and seeing the glory of God, and here is this kind of path that he was on.

  89. Suddenly it comes to a halt.

  90. And why did it happen that way in part?

  91. How many of you discovered that on occasion

  92. God has kind of brought a pause

  93. in the things that he's been doing in your life,

  94. and it actually amplifies what lies in front

  95. to a certain degree, doesn't it?

  96. And here it plays out that way,

  97. that John, anticipating, hearing what was coming next,

  98. suddenly there's a pause.

  99. And when the pause is not immediately fulfilled

  100. or that question is not immediately fulfilled,

  101. it kind of amps up his emotion.

  102. And in the backdrop of that, he really begins to sob

  103. until he is given some encouraging news.

  104. What is that news?

  105. You look there in the passage,

  106. and in Revelation chapter 5,

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  107. it says,

  108. Weep no more, verse 5,

  109. because we want you to know

  110. that the lion of the tribe of Judah,

  111. the root of David,

  112. has conquered,

  113. so he that he will open the scroll,

  114. and he's going to lay it all out before you.

  115. When you hear those words,

  116. the lion of the tribe of Judah,

  117. the root of David,

  118. what kind of thoughts go through your mind

  119. with those words?

  120. Lion, tribe of Judah.

  121. You think about the Old Testament passages

  122. that speak about the coming Messiah

  123. and his power and his glory and his significance,

  124. and you're kind of struck by that,

  125. and this is exciting.

  126. The one who's going to bring all of history

  127. to its culmination

  128. and is going to bring the power and glory of God

  129. to the forefront is going to be the lion.

  130. And yet we find that on the heels

  131. of that verbal announcement,

  132. then John is given insight that's rather stunning.

  133. You look there, and it says,

  134. In between the throne, verse 6,

  135. and the four living creatures,

  136. now just imagine this,

  137. here's an announcement,

  138. don't cry, John,

  139. because the lion of the tribe of Judah

  140. is the one who's going to open the scroll.

  141. Now, having heard that with his ears,

  142. he looks, and in verse 6 he says,

  143. And I saw a lamb standing

  144. as though it had been, what?

  145. slain.

  146. He was slain.

  147. As I was praying and thinking through

  148. those words in particular,

  149. I had to stop and think

  150. that for the most part,

  151. the vast majority of you who are sitting here

  152. really have no idea what goes into preparing food

  153. that comes from animals.

  154. You really don't understand

  155. what that word lamb slain means

  156. in a visual, visceral way.

  157. Because the truth of the matter is,

  158. I would venture to say

  159. there are very, very few of you

  160. that have ever slaughtered your own food.

  161. Raise your hand if you have.

  162. Raise your hand.

  163. Get them up high.

  164. You've slaughtered your own food.

  165. It is a difficult process.

  166. Would you agree to me?

  167. How many would say,

  168. hey, when your mom said,

  169. go out there and catch that chicken

  170. and whop off its head,

  171. you thought, yes!

  172. Chickens are easy compared to lambs.

  173. Do you understand that?

  174. How many of you have slaughtered

  175. anything larger than a chicken or a rabbit?

  176. Okay.

  177. We got a couple goat killers in here.

  178. I can see it now.

  179. A couple.

  180. Mathea goats?

  181. Lambs?

  182. Yeah.

  183. It's a hard work, isn't it?

  184. Huh?

  185. Huh?

  186. And so here's this image.

  187. John sees the lamb slain.

  188. And what he means by that

  189. is that he sees in this lamb

  190. the evidence of the fact

  191. that the lamb had been sacrificed.

  192. And the imagery must have been

  193. absolutely stunning.

  194. By the way,

  195. when you stop and think about

  196. the imagery of the book of Revelation,

  197. just off the top,

  198. what are some of the things

  199. that stand out to you?

  200. I mean,

  201. the catastrophic things

  202. that happen in the book of Revelation

  203. are pretty stunning,

  204. aren't they?

  205. Fire from heaven,

  206. you know,

  207. blood up to the bridles of the horses.

  208. You know,

  209. you think about all the people

  210. that are dying left and right.

  211. It's just,

  212. it's pretty graphic.

  213. And yet here,

  214. the most significant

  215. of all the images

  216. is not all that,

  217. but it's the lamb,

  218. the lamb,

  219. the lamb.

  220. And I want you to understand

  221. that God wants us to remember

  222. for all eternity

  223. that our salvation

  224. cost his son his life

  225. as our sacrifice.

  226. It's interesting to Mark

  227. that prior to the book of Revelation,

  228. Jesus is only mentioned

  229. four times as the lamb.

  230. One of them is in John chapter 1,

    John 1:29

  231. verse 29,

  232. where John the Baptist

  233. sees Jesus

  234. and what does he say?

  235. Behold,

  236. the lamb of God

  237. that takes away

  238. the sins of the world.

  239. Four times prior

  240. to the book of Revelation,

  241. we have Jesus spoken of

  242. as the lamb.

  243. And yet,

  244. and mark this

  245. because it's significant,

  246. in the book of Revelation,

  247. Jesus is spoken of

  248. 28 times as the lamb.

  249. 28 times as the lamb.

  250. That's stunning

  251. when you stop

  252. and put it together.

  253. And as you think about

  254. what is being said

  255. about the Lord Jesus Christ,

  256. it would seem

  257. that the thing

  258. that the Spirit of God

  259. wants us to understand

  260. when we think about Christ,

  261. in particular,

  262. in the scope of eternity,

  263. we remind ourselves

  264. of his sacrifice

  265. on our behalf.

  266. Eternity is going to be

  267. a great place.

  268. Isn't it going to be?

  269. There will be no sorrow.

  270. There will be no tears.

  271. There will be no sickness.

  272. There will be no sadness.

  273. It's going to be a...

  274. How many of you,

  275. on occasion,

  276. think to yourself,

  277. I'd like to go now?

  278. It's going to be great.

  279. But there,

  280. throughout all of history,

  281. when we look at

  282. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  283. we will look at

  284. a reminder

  285. of what he did

  286. to get us there.

  287. And it's important.

  288. Well, I want you

  289. to take a minute

  290. and appreciate

  291. what this issue

  292. of Christ being our Lamb

  293. really communicates

  294. by appreciating this title

  295. in the light of Scripture.

  296. And so allow me

  297. to skip over

  298. what God did

  299. in providing a covering

  300. for Adam and Eve

  301. back in the Old Testament,

  302. in the book of Genesis,

  303. when he sacrificed animals

  304. and gave their skins

  305. to Adam and Eve

  306. to cover their nakedness

  307. and even step forward

  308. beyond Abraham's instruction

  309. to his...

  310. or instruction

  311. regarding his son

  312. and his sacrifice.

  313. And I want you

  314. to move forward,

  315. if you will,

  316. to the book of Exodus,

  317. just in your thinking,

  318. and stop and consider

  319. what God said to Moses

  320. in relationship

  321. to the Passover Lamb

  322. and the sacrifice

  323. of that Lamb.

  324. Let me summarize

  325. the Exodus passage

  326. for you this way.

  327. each family

  328. was to choose

  329. a young lamb.

  330. Young.

  331. They were to take

  332. that lamb

  333. into their home

  334. and live with it

  335. for four days.

  336. Would it be easier

  337. to take a knife

  338. and slit the jugular

  339. of an animal

  340. that you just arbitrarily

  341. picked out of the room

  342. and did it

  343. in five minutes?

  344. Or would it be harder

  345. to take that lamb

  346. into your house,

  347. have it live

  348. with you?

  349. Could you keep

  350. the kids

  351. from petting that lamb?

  352. Don't pet that lamb.

  353. It's dying in three days.

  354. Don't pet that lamb.

  355. It's got a day to live.

  356. Don't mess with that lamb.

  357. I mean...

  358. And after four days,

  359. that lamb died.

  360. And that lamb's blood

  361. was put on the doorposts

  362. and over the lentil.

  363. As you work your way through

  364. the scriptures,

  365. you understand not only

  366. in the book of Exodus,

  367. but also in the book

  368. of Leviticus

  369. and Numbers

  370. and Deuteronomy,

  371. the issue of sacrifice

  372. was one in which

  373. the Old Testament saint,

  374. in particular,

  375. when he was engaged

  376. in sin offering,

  377. one of the things

  378. that actually he did

  379. was that he went

  380. and put his hand

  381. personally on the head

  382. of that sacrificial lamb.

  383. And in doing so,

  384. he was recognizing

  385. that it was his sin

  386. that was the consequence

  387. that was causing

  388. the death of that animal.

  389. Very visceral.

  390. Very emotional.

  391. Very personal.

  392. For you who have been involved

  393. and have been involved

  394. on occasion

  395. in killing an animal,

  396. I trust you never

  397. found pleasure in it.

  398. It was difficult to do.

  399. It was necessary.

  400. I want you to imagine

  401. just what it was like

  402. to realize that the reason

  403. that little lamb

  404. was being sacrificed

  405. was because of your,

  406. are you listening,

  407. willful, intentional

  408. rebellion against God.

  409. So when you think about

  410. Jesus Christ,

  411. the lamb,

  412. I want you to play this forward

  413. in a very personal way

  414. by stopping and recognizing

  415. that the lamb

  416. was an innocent victim

  417. and was dying as a substitute

  418. in the Old Testament.

  419. And so,

  420. when we think about Jesus

  421. as our lamb,

  422. I want you to understand

  423. that we are going

  424. to remember forever

  425. that God's lamb

  426. died in our place

  427. and as a substitute

  428. for our sins.

  429. Do you understand that?

  430. In the scope of eternity,

  431. when I look at Jesus,

  432. I cannot separate

  433. the image that I see

  434. from the reality

  435. of what He has done for me.

  436. And He will have that

  437. etched into my conscience

  438. and to my heart

  439. for all of eternity.

  440. I would propose to you

  441. that in eternity,

  442. there will be something

  443. in relationship

  444. to seeing to the lamb

  445. that is much,

  446. that is a blessing

  447. in comparison

  448. to our thinking today.

  449. Our thinking about

  450. Christ as the lamb

  451. is very, very inconsistent

  452. up and down.

  453. Would you agree with me?

  454. How many of you confess

  455. that one of the things

  456. that frustrates you

  457. on occasion

  458. is how fleeting

  459. your appreciation

  460. and emotional affection

  461. are for Jesus?

  462. Right?

  463. I mean,

  464. some days it's hot,

  465. some days it's cold,

  466. some days you're caught up

  467. in Thanksgiving,

  468. and other days you're just

  469. as moody and as sour

  470. as they come,

  471. and you stop and think,

  472. man,

  473. well, when we think

  474. about Jesus in heaven,

  475. none of that up and down

  476. will be there.

  477. It will be with a joy

  478. unfettered and unbridled,

  479. and we will enjoy Him forever,

  480. thinking about what He's done

  481. for us.

  482. He,

  483. our sacrifice,

  484. and the substitute

  485. for our sins.

  486. As I said earlier,

  487. in the act of sacrifice,

  488. particularly in the burnt offering

  489. and the sin offering,

  490. the offerer had to lay his hand

  491. on the head of the sacrifice,

  492. and that act

  493. was a symbolic way

  494. of indicating

  495. the transfer of sin

  496. from the sinner

  497. to the sacrifice,

  498. and the act was also

  499. an admission of something else.

  500. It was a recognition

  501. that someone else

  502. was going to die

  503. in your place,

  504. and so later on this morning

  505. when we take the cup,

  506. one of the things

  507. that we will be doing,

  508. we are admitting

  509. that Jesus died for us.

  510. That cup is a reminder

  511. that you have salvation

  512. because of His blood.

  513. Going back to the imagery

  514. in the book of Exodus,

  515. you remember

  516. when the blood of sacrifice

  517. was sprinkled

  518. on the doorposts

  519. and the lentil.

  520. It was later

  521. sprinkled on the altar

  522. and once a year

  523. on the mercy seat.

  524. This sprinkling

  525. communicated the effect

  526. of the blood

  527. on sin.

  528. And I want to communicate

  529. several different passages

  530. or relate several

  531. different passages,

  532. kind of drive that point home.

  533. What does blood do for sin?

  534. In Exodus chapter 12,

    Exodus 12:13

  535. verse 13,

  536. when God spoke

  537. to the nation of Israel

  538. regarding that night,

  539. He said,

  540. when I see the blood,

  541. I will pass over you.

  542. And wherever blood was

  543. against the posts

  544. and the lentil,

  545. death did not come

  546. into that home.

  547. I think about the passage

  548. in Hebrews chapter 9,

    Hebrews 9:22

  549. verse 22,

  550. and I want you to go there

  551. just for a moment.

  552. You're there in Revelation,

  553. so turn back just a little bit

  554. to Hebrews chapter 9,

    Hebrews 9:22

  555. verse 22.

  556. 2.

  557. The author of Hebrews

  558. makes a summary statement

  559. regarding the Old Testament

  560. sacrifice,

  561. and he says this,

  562. without the shedding of blood,

  563. there is no,

  564. what?

  565. Forgiveness.

  566. Why are your sins forgiven?

  567. Are they forgiven?

  568. Because you have done

  569. some nice things

  570. to kind of compensate

  571. for those bad things.

  572. I chuckle

  573. when I talk with individuals.

  574. I have to confess

  575. that I don't laugh out loud.

  576. I think that would be inappropriate,

  577. but I kind of chuckle

  578. when I talk to people

  579. and say,

  580. well, how are your sins

  581. going to be accommodated for?

  582. Well, I'm hoping

  583. my good outweighs my bad.

  584. It doesn't work that way.

  585. One sin against

  586. an infinitely holy God

  587. is infinitely offensive

  588. and your paltry

  589. little peanut effort

  590. doesn't amount to anything.

  591. But the blood of Christ does.

  592. And here in Hebrews chapter 9,

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  593. it says,

  594. without the shedding of blood,

  595. there is no forgiveness.

  596. And then mark what it says

  597. there in verse 26.

  598. As it is,

  599. he has appeared once for all

  600. at the end of the ages

  601. to put away sin

  602. by the sacrifice of himself.

  603. By the sacrifice of himself.

  604. So when we think about Jesus

  605. as the slain lamb,

  606. forever in all of eternity,

  607. carrying the marks

  608. of his sacrifice,

  609. we must think of him

  610. as the sinless substitute

  611. for our sins

  612. who died in our place

  613. that we might have

  614. everlasting life.

  615. So I want you,

  616. as we come together

  617. on this thought,

  618. to kind of revel

  619. in his work on our behalf,

  620. to stop and just kind of

  621. flesh it out a little bit

  622. and think,

  623. well, just how significant

  624. is it that Jesus died for me?

  625. I want you to recognize,

  626. for one,

  627. that the book of Revelation

  628. speaks about the fact

  629. that he was slain for us

  630. from before the foundation

  631. of the world.

  632. When did God plan

  633. his son's sacrifice?

  634. How many of you

  635. would prefer

  636. that someone put a lot of effort

  637. into thinking about

  638. your Christmas present?

  639. Don't go there.

  640. I understand that.

  641. What happened before Amazon?

  642. I can remember

  643. with my father,

  644. you know,

  645. it's father and son thing.

  646. We would go out,

  647. guess what night?

  648. Christmas Eve to shop.

  649. I mean,

  650. it's like dad

  651. in the last minute,

  652. it's like,

  653. ah,

  654. I've got to do this.

  655. He hated shopping.

  656. He hated it desperately.

  657. He passed on the genetic code.

  658. And, you know,

  659. so would you rather

  660. that someone rushed out?

  661. What happens

  662. when you buy Christmas Eve?

  663. It's generally panic buying

  664. and it's the leftovers

  665. on the shelves.

  666. How many of you

  667. understand that?

  668. And one of the things

  669. that Christmas Eve buying

  670. always cares for

  671. is that at least

  672. you keep the tag with it

  673. because you can curse

  674. the person

  675. with the responsibility

  676. of taking it back afterwards

  677. if they don't like it.

  678. When was our salvation planned?

  679. Look in the Bible,

  680. if you will.

  681. Just go forward a little bit

  682. to Revelation chapter 13,

    Revelation 13:5

  683. verse 5.

  684. Revelation chapter 13,

    Revelation 13:5

  685. verse 5.

  686. I want you to kind of

  687. chew on this passage

  688. a little bit.

  689. Revelation chapter 13,

    Revelation 13:5

  690. verse 5.

  691. How did I do that?

  692. From before the foundation

  693. of the world,

  694. I am,

  695. I am,

  696. verse 7.

  697. How do I get?

  698. Verse 8.

  699. Okay, there it is.

  700. And all who dwell

  701. on the earth

  702. will worship

  703. everyone whose name

  704. has not been written

  705. before the foundation

  706. of the world

  707. in the book of life

  708. of the Lamb

  709. who was slain.

  710. And by the way,

  711. so ask yourself the question

  712. when we sing that song,

  713. the Lamb slain

  714. from the foundation

  715. of the world,

  716. where does that come from?

  717. From this passage.

  718. And I want you to recognize

  719. that what it is saying here

  720. is that Jesus,

  721. the plan for Christ's sacrifice

  722. in our stead

  723. was something

  724. that was foreordained.

  725. It was planned before.

  726. It was planned before.

  727. That Jesus would die

  728. for my sins.

  729. He would die

  730. for your sins

  731. before I ever

  732. committed them.

  733. He had me

  734. in mind

  735. when He died

  736. on the cross.

  737. All of us,

  738. our names

  739. written in the book

  740. of life.

  741. I have to confess

  742. that it's hard

  743. to get our head around,

  744. isn't it?

  745. Stop and think about that.

  746. Not only was He slain

  747. from before the foundation

  748. of the world for us,

  749. but He was also slain

  750. specifically

  751. for our sins.

  752. Implicit in that

  753. holy title,

  754. the Lamb,

  755. is the idea

  756. that Jesus is our substitute.

  757. When I think about Him

  758. as the Lamb,

  759. when I see Him

  760. as the Lamb,

  761. I will be reminding myself

  762. that Jesus died

  763. in my place

  764. and it is worthy

  765. of consideration

  766. often.

  767. Who is Jesus?

  768. He's the one

  769. who died in my place.

  770. Furthermore,

  771. as we mark the fact

  772. that we will see Him

  773. forever as the Lamb,

  774. every time we look

  775. on Him,

  776. we will see Him

  777. as the Lamb

  778. and we remind ourselves

  779. over and over again

  780. of our close relationship

  781. to the fact

  782. of what He has done

  783. for us

  784. even in our

  785. eternal existence.

  786. I want you to turn ahead,

  787. if you will,

  788. to Revelation chapter 1,

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  789. not 21.

  790. Revelation chapter 21

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  791. and I'm going to

  792. ask that you kind of

  793. follow with me

  794. as I read

  795. verses 1 through 7.

  796. Revelation 21

    Revelation 21:1–7

  797. verse 1 through 7.

  798. Then I saw a new heaven

  799. and a new earth

  800. for the first heaven

  801. and the first earth

  802. had passed away

  803. and the sea was no more

  804. and I saw a holy city,

  805. new Jerusalem,

  806. coming down out of heaven

  807. from God,

  808. prepared as a bride

  809. adorned for her husband.

  810. And I heard a loud voice

  811. from the throne

  812. saying,

  813. Behold,

  814. the dwelling place

  815. of God is with man.

  816. He will dwell with them

  817. and they will be His people

  818. and God Himself

  819. will be with them

  820. as their God.

  821. He will wipe away

  822. every tear from their eyes

  823. and death shall be no more.

  824. Neither shall there be mourning

  825. nor crying

  826. nor pain anymore

  827. for the former things

  828. have passed away.

  829. And He who was seated

  830. on the throne

  831. said,

  832. Behold,

  833. I am making all things new.

  834. Also He said,

  835. Write this down

  836. for these words

  837. are trustworthy and true.

  838. And He said to me,

  839. It is done.

  840. I am the Alpha

  841. and the Omega,

  842. the beginning and the end

  843. to the thirsty

  844. I will give

  845. from the spring of water

  846. of life without payment.

  847. The one who conquers

  848. will have this heritage

  849. that I will be His God

  850. and He will be my Son.

  851. Now I want you to think

  852. through with me

  853. carrying from these verses

  854. here that we've already read

  855. forward on to the end

  856. of the chapter more or less

  857. and mark several different things.

  858. For one,

  859. we find that He is our God

  860. and we are in relationship

  861. with Him

  862. and blessed because of that.

  863. That's what we found here

  864. in the first seven verses.

  865. But I want you to understand

  866. that also when we think about

  867. who we are in eternity,

  868. we will recognize ourselves

  869. in relationship to the Lamb

  870. because as it says there

  871. in verse 9,

  872. look at it,

  873. Then came one of the seven angels

  874. who had the seven bowls

  875. full of the seven last plagues

  876. and spoke to me saying,

  877. Come and I will show you

  878. what?

  879. The bride.

  880. Who's the bride?

  881. That's who we are.

  882. Isn't that right?

  883. I couldn't help as I was

  884. studying to remind myself

  885. of one of the things

  886. that I have often said

  887. to our search committee

  888. as we continue looking

  889. for God's man.

  890. I said,

  891. You know what?

  892. The Father loves this bride

  893. because it belongs to His Son

  894. even more than the search committee does.

  895. The bride.

  896. The bride.

  897. The bride.

  898. We are referred to

  899. as the Lamb's bride.

  900. Furthermore,

  901. I want you to recognize

  902. in verse 14

  903. that the foundations

  904. of the holy city

  905. will carry

  906. the name of the Lamb.

  907. The underlying stability

  908. that we will enjoy

  909. in all of eternity

  910. is there because

  911. of the Lamb.

  912. Our worship

  913. will be centralized

  914. on the Lamb.

  915. Look at verse 22.

  916. And I saw no temple

  917. in the city.

  918. And by the way,

  919. to the Old Testament saint,

  920. how important was the temple?

  921. Buddy,

  922. it was supremely important.

  923. I saw no temple.

  924. Why?

  925. For its temple

  926. is the Lord God,

  927. the Almighty,

  928. and the Lamb.

  929. Our paths,

  930. our decisions

  931. will be governed

  932. by the Lamb.

  933. That's what we find

  934. in 23 and 24.

  935. And the city

  936. has no need

  937. of sun or moon

  938. to shine on it,

  939. for the glory of God

  940. gives it light,

  941. and its lamp

  942. is the Lamb.

  943. By its light

  944. will the nations walk,

  945. and the kings

  946. of the earth

  947. will bring their glory

  948. into it.

  949. And so this morning,

  950. when we take the bread

  951. and we take the cup,

  952. what I want you

  953. to stop and think about

  954. is just how significant

  955. Jesus is

  956. to your life.

  957. I want to add something

  958. as I close.

  959. You will not think

  960. those kind of thoughts

  961. effectively

  962. apart

  963. from a humble

  964. dependence

  965. upon the Holy Spirit.

  966. And so this morning,

  967. as the men come

  968. and we take the elements

  969. together,

  970. the thing that I want you

  971. to do is think about

  972. the Lord Jesus,

  973. the Lamb,

  974. slain from before

  975. the foundation

  976. of the world

  977. for your sins,

  978. and we celebrate

  979. that fact this morning

  980. as we take these elements.

  981. We are going to...

  982. Go ahead, men.

  983. Have a seat for a minute.

  984. We're going to sing

  985. and celebrate

  986. the Lord's table together.

  987. Behold the Lamb

  988. who bears our sins

  989. away,

  990. slain for us.

  991. We remember the promise

  992. made that all would come

  993. in faith,

  994. find forgiveness

  995. at the cross.

  996. So we share

  997. in the bread of life

  998. as we drink

  999. as we drink

  1000. of His sacrifice

  1001. as we sign

1002. of our arms of peace

  1003. around the table

  1004. of the King.

1005. Let me take a moment

  1006. in prayer.

  1007. Father,

  1008. Holy Father,

  1009. this morning

  1010. as we gather

  1011. at this table,

  1012. we remind ourselves

  1013. that You,

  1014. in eternity past,

  1015. planned for our redemption

  1016. through the bloody

  1017. sacrifice and death

  1018. of Your Son,

  1019. the Lord Jesus,

  1020. on our behalf.

  1021. And this morning

1022. as we take the bread

1023. and we take the cup,

1024. we want to do so

  1025. with consciences

  1026. that are clear.

  1027. As believers

1028. who have come by faith

  1029. to recognize

  1030. that salvation

1031. is in the Lord Jesus Christ

  1032. alone.

  1033. And as we take

  1034. the bread and cup,

  1035. we bear testimony

  1036. to that.

  1037. Our desire also

  1038. is that, Lord,

1039. as we take the bread

  1040. and cup,

  1041. our thoughts

  1042. would reflect

  1043. that Your purpose

  1044. in saving us

  1045. was for Your glory.

  1046. That our lives

  1047. and our obedience

  1048. would draw attention

  1049. to Your power

  1050. and Your grace.

  1051. Give us an ambition

  1052. and affection

  1053. for godliness

1054. in the days to come

  1055. that brings honor

  1056. to our Son,

  1057. the Lord Jesus.

1058. We ask in Jesus' name.

  1059. Amen.

  1060. Amen.

  1061. Amen.

  1062. Amen.

  1063. Amen.

  1064. Amen.

  1065. Amen.

  1066. Amen.

1067. And when he'd given thanks, he broke it and said, this is my body, which is for you.

1068. Do this in remembrance of me.

  1069. Amen.

  1070. Amen.

  1071. Amen.

  1072. Amen.

  1073. Amen.

  1074. Amen.

  1075. Amen.

  1076. Amen.

1077. Drain the cup that all may enter in to receive the life of God.

1078. In the same way also he took the cup after supper, saying,

1079. This cup is the new covenant in my blood.

1080. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me.

  1081. Let's stand together.

  1082. Amen.

1083. As we rise together to come

1084. Our call to follow in the steps of Christ as his body here on earth.

1085. As we share in his suffering.

  1086. And we'll pray

  1087. We'll to them again

  1088. And we'll join

  1089. The day's of high

1090. And at the day's of the day

1091. To the day's of high

1092. The Lion of Judah, the Lamb that was slain,

1093. was sent to heaven and therefore the rain.

1094. At the end of the age, when the earth will be,

1095. we will gather the nations before you.

1096. And lives of all men will be fixed on the Lamb

1097. who was crucified with wisdom and mercy and justice.

1098. You'll reign the Father's side and the angels will cry,

  1099. Hail the Lamb!

1100. And the earth will reply,

  1101. You shall reign

1102. As the King of all kings and the Lord of all kings.
