  1. I want you to turn your Bibles this morning to John chapter 8 beginning there in verse 48.

    John 8 chapter mention

  2. The Jews answered him, Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?

  3. Jesus answered, I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father and you dishonor me.

  4. Yet I do not seek my own glory.

  5. There is one who seeks it and he is the judge.

  6. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.

  7. Let's pray.

  8. Father, for us this morning, together as a body of believers, prayer is not something we do out of habit or routine

  9. or because it's just the appropriate way to introduce a sermon.

  10. We do so because we have confidence in you who answer prayer.

  11. And we confess at the same time that we are pretty frail.

  12. Father, we tend to be full of ourselves and our own ambitions and interests.

  13. And Father, we recognize that your glory, your word is truly supremely valuable

  14. and we are well served to come to you with humility and ask for your help.

  15. That as the psalmist wrote in Psalm 119, verse 18,

    Psalms 119:18

  16. Open thou mine eyes that I might behold wondrous truths out of thy law.

  17. And so we begin with prayer.

  18. There are some here that need to be obedient.

  19. For your people are charged with responsibility in the scriptures of praying that the word of God would have free course.

  20. There are some here this morning that need to be obedient.

  21. Some who need their hearts encouraged and refreshed.

  22. Some who need to be drawn to the cross and to genuine repentance and faith.

  23. And some who need to have their hearts lifted up with the love of the Lord Jesus Christ

  24. and that their love may grow for him.

  25. All these things flow from the preaching of your word,

  26. from the faithful and humble prayers of your people and the work of the Spirit among us.

  27. And so we begin by asking for your help.

  28. And we have confidence in your answer.

  29. And for Jesus' glory we ask this.

  30. Amen.

  31. Well, as we take up our text this morning,

  32. I think it's appropriate to kind of frame where we are in the book of John.

  33. And I want you to understand that John chapter 8 is a breakover point.

    John 8 chapter mention

  34. If you are familiar with the four gospels,

  35. you know that the four gospels really only cover a very small part of Christ's life.

  36. He lived some 30 years.

  37. And the truth of the matter is,

  38. is that the gospels give us hardly any detail about his birth,

  39. none about his adolescence and childhood, etc.

  40. And the majority of the time actually focuses on the one week surrounding his crucifixion.

  41. That is particularly true of the synoptic gospels.

  42. What we find in John's gospel is that he takes a different tack,

  43. and at the center of his gospel is this singular focus of making sure

  44. that those who read the gospel understand some fundamental questions.

  45. The question is this, who is Jesus?

  46. And what does that mean to me?

  47. Interestingly, in the last several weeks, for one, I was out in California with my sister,

  48. and then later I had an opportunity to talk with some other individuals.

  49. And in two conversations, though they were in different locations

  50. and with radically different individuals,

  51. we really came back to kind of the same things.

  52. And when I actually had a person ask me, a Baptist pastor, that's always scary,

  53. but, you know, ask me,

  54. so what's this about all the religions in the world?

  55. I thought that was a died-and-gone-to-heaven opportunity.

  56. I really did.

  57. And I explained it this way.

  58. Even though I grew up in India, my parents were missionaries,

  59. and I lived across the street from Muslims,

  60. and I had Hindus around the corner,

  61. and I had Buddhists where I went to school in the Himalaya Mountains.

  62. How many of you noticed they said Himalaya, not Himalaya?

  63. Just talk to me about that afterwards, okay?

  64. But anyway, here we go.

  65. There are really only two religions in the world.

  66. Only two.

  67. One that proposes mankind may work their way up the ladder by repeated efforts

  68. and eventually get it right.

  69. And if that idea is true, then Buddhism, or Hinduism in particular, with do-overs.

  70. You know what a do-over is?

  71. It's, you know, you die and get another shot at it,

  72. another shot, another shot, another shot.

  73. It took me a while to figure out in India why, for the most part,

  74. people tended not to help the deprived and down.

  75. Here's the reason.

  76. Because you're messing with their karma.

  77. Do you understand?

  78. They're paying off their debt from the past,

  79. and when you step in and interfere, guess what they have to do?

  80. They have to do it again.

  81. So kind of let them work their way out of this pile.

  82. Wow.

  83. And so here, two religions, one where men kind of work their way up,

  84. and I love asking the question to people,

  85. so when you die and God says,

  86. why should I let you into heaven, what are you going to say?

  87. Well, I've been a pretty good person.

  88. You're on that, guess what?

  89. You're kind of on the works-based idea of kind of working your way up.

  90. The other idea is God knowing our desperate inability to save ourselves,

  91. about like a drowning man pulling himself out of the water by his hair.

  92. You know, it's like God sent his son to be the sacrifice for my sin,

  93. and he, seeing my desperate state, loving me unconditionally,

  94. and not because of who I am or ever would be,

  95. he sent Jesus to be my Savior.

  96. So in both of these conversations,

  97. I had the opportunity of kind of ending off the conversation by saying,

  98. because, you know, it's not like the person said,

  99. man, I need Jesus right now.

  100. What do I do?

  101. I wish that had happened, but it didn't.

  102. So it's like, so how does a pastor walk away from some of these conversations?

  103. Here's what I did.

  104. I said, hey, we've had a great time talking about these things,

  105. and can I leave you with something to think about?

  106. Well, yeah, sure, you know.

  107. I said, why don't you read the Gospel of John,

  108. and as you're reading the Gospel of John,

  109. just ask yourself two questions.

  110. Who is Jesus?

  111. And what does that mean to me?

  112. And that question is particularly poignant.

  113. It's very central to what we're going to study this morning,

  114. because here at John chapter 8,

    John 8 chapter mention

  115. remember I said we're kind of at a turnover,

  116. a turning point.

  117. Prior to John chapter 8,

    John 8 chapter mention

  118. Jesus has continued a fairly public ministry

  119. that has gotten more aggressive

  120. in making it clear to people who He is.

  121. And, as you have heard me say,

  122. when the truth is out there,

  123. people are on the spot of saying yes or no to God,

  124. and that's what happened.

  125. As Jesus made His messianic and saving work clear,

  126. people came to the point of saying yes or no.

  127. And John 8 is a turning point.

  128. He stops working so much in the public eye

  129. and begins to invest more and more energy

  130. in working towards the cross

  131. and ministering to His disciples.

  132. Interestingly enough,

  133. as we were closing off these conversations

  134. that I referenced,

  135. I had one of them say to me,

  136. well, you know,

  137. I really do believe that all religions are the same.

  138. Now, I'm on the spot.

  139. What do I say with that?

  140. And I said, well,

  141. you know, I have to tell you,

  142. if I read the Bible,

  143. I have to come to a conclusion

  144. of either Jesus is a pathological liar

  145. or He's telling the truth.

  146. Because what Jesus said is,

  147. I am the way, the truth, and the life,

  148. and no one comes to the Father but by Me.

  149. And so either Jesus was a liar and a deceiver

  150. or what He had to say about who He was

  151. and what He'd come to do

  152. was to be believed or rejected.

  153. And so as we work our way

  154. through this passage this morning,

  155. beginning there in John 8, verse 48,

    John 8:48

  156. one of the things that I want you

  157. to be thinking about

  158. is this central question,

  159. who is Jesus

  160. and what does that mean to me?

  161. And I'm going to take

  162. the parts of this passage

  163. and break them down

  164. into two little pieces.

  165. I'm going to let you kind of

  166. follow along with me

  167. and if you want to,

  168. you could actually put a little tick mark

  169. by verse 48.

  170. This is the Jews

  171. kind of reacting to Jesus.

  172. You could put another little tick mark

  173. by verse 52

  174. and you could put a little tick mark

  175. by verse 57.

  176. So you've got to get an outline.

  177. We see the one side

  178. that looks at Jesus

  179. and has the idea

  180. that He is not

  181. the Son of God

  182. and the one who is

  183. the Savior of the world.

  184. So we're going to work our way

  185. through this passage

  186. and I want you to understand

  187. ahead of time

  188. how the outline is going to flow.

  189. Being that we start in verse 48,

  190. I guess we could begin this way

  191. of saying the question is this,

  192. was Jesus a wicked deceiver

  193. and a liar?

  194. In verse 48,

  195. the Jews answered Him,

  196. are we not right

  197. in saying that you are a Samaritan

  198. and have a demon?

  199. And when they said that,

  200. I want you to understand

  201. that they were responding

  202. to the ongoing logic

  203. that Jesus had been engaging in

  204. since the beginning of chapter 8.

  205. It actually goes back

  206. in chapter 6

  207. where He came out

  208. and made it clear

  209. I am the bread of life.

  210. And then in chapter 8

  211. in particular,

  212. He said,

  213. I am the light of the world.

  214. Later,

  215. in that same context,

  216. He made it clear to them

  217. that those who did not believe in Him

  218. were destined to an eternity in hell

  219. because of their rejection

  220. of the offer that He made

  221. of the gospel

  222. and salvation through that.

  223. And so here they were.

  224. The Jews had tried to trap Jesus

  225. with various logical arguments.

  226. They had actually sent some

  227. to arrest Him.

  228. This had not worked out.

  229. Not worked out well at all.

  230. And so their closing statements

  231. were kind of a sarcastic

  232. and what they thought

  233. was a supremely insulting statement

  234. to Jesus.

  235. Now, I'm not inclined

  236. to get into the political season.

  237. You know that.

  238. But I'm always impressed

  239. by the fact that

  240. when people don't have much to say,

  241. they are reduced

  242. to throwing barbs at one another.

  243. How many of you understand

  244. what I'm saying?

  245. In the absence of logic,

  246. insult will do.

  247. And so here's what the Jews did.

  248. They were not being very successful

  249. at dealing with Jesus' popularity.

  250. They were not being successful

  251. at dealing with Jesus'

  252. winsome ministry

  253. and gospel presentation

  254. that He was the one

  255. who'd come to save people

  256. from their sins.

  257. And so they decided,

  258. let's go with the absolute

  259. knockout insult

  260. for any average Jewish male.

  261. We will call Him

  262. a Samaritan

  263. and we'll accuse Him

  264. of being filled with demons.

  265. Somebody's like,

  266. ah, you can't say that about me.

  267. You can see it going on.

  268. And Jesus goes,

  269. yeah, really?

  270. Is that all you got?

  271. Well, you look here

  272. and they threw it.

  273. And by the way,

  274. you do have to understand

  275. that Jesus had kind of

  276. egged them on a little bit.

  277. You understand that,

  278. don't you?

  279. He had referred to them

  280. as not being part

  281. of Abraham's children.

  282. And He'd actually gone so far

  283. in verse 44

  284. to say that they were

  285. the children of Satan.

  286. And you can understand

  287. that things were getting

  288. pretty heated.

  289. And so they threw this at Jesus

  290. and they thought,

  291. wow, this is going to do it.

  292. But what happened?

  293. You look there in verse 49,

  294. Jesus answered,

  295. I do not have a demon,

  296. but I honor my father

  297. and you dishonor me.

  298. I want you to understand

  299. that at the core

  300. of the tension

  301. between Jesus

  302. and the religious leaders

  303. was this question

  304. of whether or not

  305. their system of faith

  306. was worthy of trust.

  307. The Jewish leaders

  308. had the idea

  309. that the way in which

  310. you got to heaven

  311. is one,

  312. it really helped to be a Jew.

  313. And number two,

  314. you had to keep

  315. a whole grocery list of laws.

  316. One of the biggies

  317. was really don't mess

  318. with the Sabbath.

  319. And how many of you

  320. realize that Jesus

  321. kind of specialized

  322. on Sunday

  323. or on Sabbath healings, right?

  324. It's like,

  325. remember they said,

  326. can you do it any other day?

  327. And I was like,

  328. please, no.

  329. And Jesus kept on

  330. letting them know

  331. that the Sabbath

  332. was not all about

  333. their rules and plans.

  334. And really,

  335. coming back,

  336. what the Jewish leaders

  337. had put together

  338. was a works-based faith.

  339. faith.

  340. They believed

  341. that they were going

  342. to get to heaven

  343. because they were

  344. doing the right things.

  345. And by the way,

  346. that is the predominant

  347. faith of everyone.

  348. Everyone.

  349. Whether a person

  350. is a professing believer

  351. or a person

  352. is an atheist,

  353. at the end of the day,

  354. they think it's going

  355. to turn out okay

  356. because at the heart

  357. of it,

  358. they think they're

  359. pretty decent people.

  360. Now,

  361. I would be the first

  362. to admit that

  363. everybody could be

  364. worse with practice.

  365. But the fact of the matter

  366. is the heart

  367. is a dark

  368. and deceitful place.

  369. And when Jesus

  370. made it clear

  371. to the Jewish

  372. spiritual leaders

  373. of Israel

  374. that their faith

  375. in their works,

  376. religion,

  377. was not going

  378. to accomplish

  379. what they hoped,

  380. they became incensed.

  381. They hated

  382. the logic

  383. of what He presented.

  384. Incidentally,

  385. it was rooted

  386. in the Old Testament

  387. scriptures

  388. and what God

  389. had to say

  390. about the heart

  391. of man.

  392. And so,

  393. here we are today

  394. sitting under

  395. the teaching

  396. of the Word of God

  397. and really having

  398. to wrestle

  399. with the same

  400. attitudes

  401. that the Jewish

  402. religious leaders

  403. were dealing with.

  404. Am I trusting

  405. this morning

  406. in my own abilities

  407. and my own goodness

  408. to be the remedy

  409. for the darkness

  410. of my own heart?

  411. Put it another way,

  412. are you sitting

  413. here trusting

  414. in your own efforts

  415. to save you?

  416. And that's a question

  417. every one of us

  418. need to answer.

  419. Am I really confident

  420. at the end of the day

  421. that my increased

  422. education

  423. or my increased effort

  424. and a little more

  425. self-help,

  426. I'll get there.

  427. I'm not what I should be

  428. but give me time,

  429. it's okay.

  430. Here's the problem.

  431. When you start

  432. with bad code

  433. or to use

  434. a mathematical

  435. principle

  436. that I am

  437. always very

  438. uncomfortable with

  439. but if you don't

  440. copy the problem

  441. right when the

  442. teacher writes it

  443. on the board

  444. and you take it home

  445. and you've got

  446. some of the pieces

  447. wrong in the way

  448. you copied it,

  449. how many times

  450. does it take

  451. before you get it

  452. right?

  453. Forever.

  454. Here's the reason.

  455. If you don't

  456. get the information

  457. right to start with,

  458. you can't come out

  459. with the right

  460. conclusion

  461. and the truth

  462. of the matter

  463. is the scripture

  464. says that the

  465. heart of man

  466. is deceitful

  467. above all things

  468. and desperately

  469. wicked who can

  470. know it.

  471. The heart that I

  472. have and the

  473. heart that you

  474. have is a place

  475. that is marked

  476. by darkness

  477. and deceit

  478. and sin.

  479. I'm not as bad

  480. as I could be

  481. with practice

  482. but I cannot

  483. save myself

  484. and Jesus

  485. made that true

  486. undeniably clear

  487. to the Jewish

  488. leaders.

  489. So the practical

  490. question for you

  491. at this moment

  492. is do I believe,

  493. do I believe

  494. that my sin

  495. is a serious

  496. problem

  497. or do I believe

  498. that I can solve

  499. my problem

  500. with my own

  501. efforts

  502. and my energy?

  503. As we work

  504. through the remainder

  505. of the passage

  506. you will notice

  507. that Jesus

  508. didn't back away

  509. from the truth

  510. of their need

  511. and interestingly

  512. enough as he

  513. continued to make

  514. his ministry

  515. and his calling

  516. clear what

  517. happened is they

  518. hardened their

  519. heart.

  520. Will you listen

  521. to me?

  522. There is a distinct

  523. disadvantage to

  524. sitting under the

  525. teaching of the

  526. gospel when a

  527. person refuses to

  528. hear what God

  529. has to say.

  530. Why is that?

  531. The more light

  532. you are given

  533. the more responsible

  534. you are for the

  535. facts.

  536. And gospel

  537. teaching helps

  538. you come to

  539. grips with the

  540. fact I can't

  541. solve my problem

  542. myself.

  543. I need Jesus

  544. to be the one

  545. that helps me.

  546. And so as you

  547. sit here this

  548. morning I appeal

  549. to you that you

  550. don't behave like

  551. the Jewish hearers

  552. did who said

  553. hey I don't want

  554. to hear what you

  555. have to say

  556. and I'm going

  557. to accuse you

  558. with the most

  559. vile name I

  560. conceivably can

  561. because I want

  562. you to step off

  563. the message that

  564. you have.

  565. So when you say

  566. no to the light

  567. I want you to

  568. hear this things

  569. grow darker in

  570. your life.

  571. Don't risk that.

  572. You look here in

  573. the passage in

  574. verse 48 the

  575. Jews answered

  576. you got a demon

  577. you're Samaritan.

  578. Verse 52 the

  579. Jews said to him

  580. now we know that

  581. you have a

  582. demon because

  583. Jesus said hey

  584. those that believe

  585. in me are not

  586. going to die.

  587. Abraham died I

  588. mean that was

  589. trump for a Jew

  590. do you understand

  591. everything kind

  592. mention Abraham's

  593. name it's like

  594. that's good that's

  595. good you got

  596. Abraham in the

  597. picture that's

  598. good and Jesus

  599. said you believe

  600. in me you're not

  601. going to die well

  602. Abraham died the

  603. prophets died blah

  604. blah blah and

  605. Jesus says let's

  606. get this clear.

  607. the life that you

  608. live in the

  609. physical sense is

  610. going to bring you

  611. to the grave but

  612. those who trust in

  613. Jesus are not going

  614. to die.

  615. So let's kind of

  616. step into that a

  617. little bit more and

  618. ask you a practical

  619. question as you work

  620. your way through

  621. this is Jesus your

  622. hope and your

  623. confidence for all

  624. of eternity.

  625. I want you to put

  626. your finger if you

  627. would on John

    John 8:51

  628. chapter 8 verse

  629. 51 look at that it

  630. says this truly truly

  631. I say to you if

  632. anyone keeps my

  633. word he will never

  634. see death never

  635. see death.

  636. Now let me ask you

  637. a question if you

  638. had been if you

  639. had been writing

  640. that verse and you

  641. weren't invited to

  642. do that so just kind

  643. of buy what's there

  644. right but if you

  645. had been writing

  646. that verse would

  647. you have written it

  648. the way Jesus

  649. quoted it or would

  650. you rather have

  651. said anyone who

  652. believes in me

  653. shall never see

  654. death.

  655. which would you

  656. prefer?

  657. Whoever keeps my

  658. word or whoever

  659. believes in me.

  660. How many of you

  661. would prefer just

  662. hey I believe

  663. I believe you know

  664. it's like I

  665. believe.

  666. Why did Jesus say

  667. keeps?

  668. Listen to me.

  669. It's fairly easy to

  670. profess belief.

  671. It's another thing to

  672. show the evidence of

  673. the transforming power

  674. of the gospel in

  675. behavior that is

  676. radically different

  677. than the way you

  678. used to be.

  679. I think one of the

  680. things that's a

  681. detriment to the

  682. evangelical church

  683. today is there are

  684. a whole lot of

  685. people scampering

  686. around saying I

  687. believe and they're

  688. acting like the

  689. average unregenerate

  690. unsaved person and

  691. there's no difference

  692. whatever in their

  693. life.

  694. Jesus said let me tell

  695. you something.

  696. Here's how you know

  697. you got the real

  698. deal.

  699. There's something

  700. happening in your

  701. life.

  702. It's interesting.

  703. A couple weeks ago I

  704. was sitting at the

  705. table with three

  706. wonderful people I

  707. had the opportunity to

  708. eat supper with and

  709. we're in a conversation

  710. and all three of them

  711. were profoundly

  712. unhappy.

  713. I mean we're

  714. talking about people

  715. that had education

  716. up to the point that

  717. I was kind of sitting

  718. there with degree

  719. envy.

  720. It's like wow I'm

  721. impressed.

  722. But the thing I kept

  723. as we were just kind

  724. of so how do you like

  725. your job?

  726. I work with turkeys.

  727. And I just kept on

  728. going on.

  729. These were unhappy

  730. people.

  731. I mean really unhappy.

  732. And finally you know

  733. low life sitting there

  734. in his jeans and

  735. t-shirt and that's

  736. California so you

  737. understand.

  738. I said I feel sorry.

  739. I'm sad that you're so

  740. unhappy.

  741. And they looked at me

  742. and I was like well

  743. are you happy?

  744. I said I love doing

  745. what I do.

  746. What do you do?

  747. Here's my answer.

  748. I said I'm a broken

  749. person.

  750. Who gets to talk to

  751. broken people about the

  752. only one who can fix

  753. their heart.

  754. Do you follow that?

  755. I love that.

  756. And here is Jesus

  757. saying something

  758. profound.

  759. Look at the passage.

  760. Truly truly I say to

  761. you if anyone keeps my

  762. word he will never see

  763. death.

  764. I'm a professional

  765. funeral doer.

  766. How many of you

  767. understand what I just

  768. said?

  769. I'm a pastor.

  770. I've done funerals.

  771. In fact the truth of

  772. the matter is the

  773. first professional

  774. act I ever performed

  775. was to do a funeral.

  776. My father-in-law thought

  777. that I should be a

  778. pastor before I thought

  779. that I should be a

  780. pastor.

  781. pastor and he

  782. invited me to go to a

  783. graveside in New

  784. Jersey and be part of

  785. the funeral service at

  786. the graveside.

  787. I'm froze to death.

  788. It was like January and

  789. it's like what am I doing

  790. out here?

  791. No someday someday you're

  792. going to be doing this.

  793. I don't think so.

  794. But you know what?

  795. I'm a professional

  796. funeral doer.

  797. I mean and I've got to

  798. tell you something.

  799. Listen to me.

  800. I love funerals.

  801. I absolutely love

  802. funerals because I have

  803. a captive audience that

  804. is obligated to sit and

  805. listen to what I have to

  806. say for a couple minutes.

  807. And I never preach about

  808. the person that's dead.

  809. Do you know why that is?

  810. Because they don't care.

  811. I'm all about letting the

  812. people who are still in

  813. the path of dying know

  814. about how to get it right.

  815. And so here we are.

  816. Jesus says to them,

  817. hey, the one who believes

  818. in me will never see

  819. death.

  820. And what he was talking

  821. about was not the issue

  822. of physical death because

  823. we know for a fact that

  824. people die.

  825. They die every day.

  826. Every one of us here are

  827. going to be ground

  828. temperature one of the

  829. days unless Jesus comes

  830. back.

  831. It's just a fact.

  832. And so you look here and

  833. here is Jesus.

  834. He's speaking about the

  835. issue of not seeing death

  836. and their immediate

  837. response is verse 52.

  838. Now we know that you have

  839. a demon.

  840. Abraham died as did the

  841. prophets.

  842. And yet you say, 52, if

  843. anyone keeps my word, what?

  844. You're not going to die.

  845. Now listen to the response

  846. that Jesus gives.

  847. In verse 54 he says, if I

  848. glorify myself, my glory is

  849. nothing.

  850. It is my father who glorifies

  851. me of whom you say he is our

  852. God.

  853. Now follow with me so that

  854. you understand what is

  855. happening here.

  856. Jesus has made a profound

  857. and indicting statement to

  858. them.

  859. You are going to die in your

  860. sins.

  861. He said that three times

  862. earlier in John 8.

  863. And I got to tell you that

  864. was pretty offensive.

  865. People who were greatly

  866. confident in their own

  867. status as, hey, I'm doing

  868. the best I can.

  869. In fact, I'm doing better

  870. than he is.

  871. I mean, what do you mean

  872. I'm not going to make it?

  873. Jesus was profoundly

  874. offensive to them and they

  875. kept on pushing back at it

  876. and here he says, listen,

  877. let me tell you something.

  878. I'm not in this to glorify

  879. myself.

  880. And what was he saying?

  881. He was saying that the

  882. father was the one who was

  883. glorifying him.

  884. How was God glorifying

  885. Jesus?

  886. Ask yourself the question.

  887. How was God glorifying

  888. Jesus?

  889. Let me help you understand

  890. that for one, God was

  891. glorifying Jesus by the fact

  892. that Jesus had the full

  893. measure of the Spirit and

  894. everything he said came

  895. from the prompting and the

  896. enabling and the power of

  897. the Spirit of God.

  898. Remember one of the

  899. recurring things that people

  900. said about Jesus?

  901. You never heard anybody

  902. talk like him.

  903. You never heard anybody.

  904. Man, he could preach your

  905. socks off to use the

  906. phrase.

  907. That guy brought fire from

  908. heaven.

  909. Remember when they sent

  910. people to arrest Jesus?

  911. I mean, these were

  912. professional arresters.

  913. And they came to deal with

  914. Jesus.

  915. They kind of had it.

  916. All right, bud, you grab

  917. him on the left arm and

  918. I'm going to grab him on

  919. the right and we're going

  920. to march him right in there

  921. to the Sanhedrin and he's

  922. toast.

  923. And all they did was they

  924. listened to him preach the

  925. word of God and what

  926. happened?

  927. Walked out of there as a

  928. kind of overawed and

  929. fanatic.

  930. And they came back to the

  931. Jewish leaders and they

  932. said, you never heard

  933. anything like this.

  934. I mean, that guy preached

  935. like, wow.

  936. How do you do that in

  937. power of the spirit?

  938. Something else.

  939. Do you understand that he

  940. did miracles that were

  941. real miracles?

  942. Jesus was the original

  943. fact-checking opportunity.

  944. What I mean by that is one

  945. of the things that happens

  946. every now and then is we

  947. have quote-unquote, you

  948. know, these fancy miracles

  949. at these big rallies, you

  950. know, kind of stuff.

  951. And, you know, what

  952. happens is in 24 hours,

  953. 48 hours, people come back

  954. and check and see, really,

  955. did they get healed, etc.?

  956. And da-da-da.

  957. And they were always around

  958. behind Jesus kind of

  959. checking to see whether

  960. there was clear evidence

  961. of him really doing the

  962. miracles.

  963. We're going to get to that

  964. in John 9, by the way.

  965. Remember a man born blind?

  966. They're all about checking

  967. to see whether or not

  968. Jesus really could heal.

  969. And there was undeniable

  970. power that he healed.

  971. In fact, it was so undeniable

  972. that remember after he raised

  973. Lazarus from the dead,

  974. what did they think was

  975. their best option for

  976. dealing with the evidence

  977. of Lazarus?

  978. What was it?

  979. Kill him!

  980. If you don't like the

  981. messenger, kill the

  982. messenger, right?

  983. Okay, so here we are.

  984. How did God affirm and

  985. glorify Christ?

  986. By enabling him to perform

  987. miracles.

  988. But one other thing.

  989. God glorified Christ by

  990. seeing to it that hundreds

  991. and thousands of years

  992. before Christ showed up on

  993. the scene, there were

  994. repeated prophetic

  995. statements about the

  996. ministry of the coming

  997. Messiah, and Jesus

  998. fulfilled every one of

  999. them.

1000. In fact, one of the things

1001. that you find over and

  1002. over again in the

1003. Scripture, it says, he did

  1004. this to fulfill Old

  1005. Testament prophecy.

1006. So I want you to look

1007. here at verse 51 and

1008. kind of lock your heart

  1009. in on this.

  1010. Those who believe in

  1011. Jesus will never see

  1012. death.

  1013. That's interesting.

  1014. Those who believe in

  1015. Jesus will never see

  1016. death.

  1017. What does that mean?

  1018. It's not physical death

1019. because we know for one,

1020. Jesus was going to die on

  1021. the cross.

1022. We know for another that

1023. ever since Adam and Eve

  1024. sinned in the garden,

  1025. human existence has been

1026. marked by the sorrow and

  1027. the reality of death.

1028. I want you to understand

  1029. that what Jesus was

  1030. talking about was the

1031. fact that those who have

1032. faith in Christ and His

  1033. finished work upon the

1034. cross do not see death

  1035. the same way the

  1036. unbeliever sees death.

1037. Now, when you hear a

  1038. statement like that, a

  1039. logical follow-up is,

  1040. can you prove it?

1041. I want you to turn in

  1042. your Bibles to Revelation

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  1043. chapter 21.

  1044. Revelation chapter 21 is

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

1045. the way the book ends.

1046. And listen to what it says

  1047. in Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21:8

  1048. verse 8 and then verse 14.

1049. But as for the cowardly,

  1050. the faithless, the detestable,

  1051. as for murderers, the

  1052. sexually immoral, sorcerers,

  1053. idolaters, and all liars,

1054. their portion will be in the

1055. lake that burns with fire and

1056. sulfur, which is the, what?

  1057. What's the word?

  1058. Second death.

  1059. Second death.

1060. Look again, if you will,

  1061. at verse 14.

1062. And the wall, I'm sorry,

  1063. verse 14.

1064. Suffice it to say that 8

1065. will do it unless Tom can

1066. save me and find where it

  1067. says second death twice.

1068. Because it does say it.

  1069. We'll move on.

  1070. Okay?

1071. The point is this, is that

1072. there is a death that we die

1073. physically, but there is a

  1074. death that unbelievers die

  1075. spiritually.

  1076. How is that?

1077. For one thing, death is

  1078. separation.

1079. In simple terms, it's the

  1080. separation.

  1081. And ultimately, the

  1082. unbeliever will be separated

1083. from God and not just kind of

  1084. separated into, you know,

1085. kind of absence from God.

1086. It is separation into eternal

1087. suffering that is very real and

  1088. undeniable in the Scriptures.

1089. The sinner's death will usher

  1090. him forever into eternal

  1091. judgment.

  1092. The sinner's death will

1093. separate him forever from the

1094. joys of fellowship with God.

1095. And so that brings us kind of

1096. here to the closing lines of

1097. this chapter and the final point

1098. that you want to consider.

1099. You go back there to verse 51,

1100. if you will, again in John

    John 8 chapter mention

  1101. chapter 8.

1102. And here's what Jesus said.

1103. He said there in verse 51,

1104. if anyone keeps my word, he

  1105. will never see death.

1106. What Jesus was saying is those

1107. who keep his word and who

1108. believe in him will not die a

1109. spiritual death and suffer the

1110. eternal absence from God the

  1111. Father.

1112. You will be in the presence of

1113. God and enjoy his company

  1114. forever.

1115. I've got to tell you this

1116. morning as I went into the

  1117. office, touched on the

  1118. computer screen, just touched

1119. the keyboard, bang, there came

1120. up the picture of my family, my

  1121. dad and my mom.

1122. You know the first thought I

  1123. had?

1124. My first thought is, dad, I'm

  1125. seeing you again.

  1126. That's what I thought.

1127. First thought was, I'm seeing

  1128. you again.

1129. I have no fear of dying.

1130. And the reason I have no fear

1131. of dying is not because I'm

1132. deceiving myself, but because I

1133. have confidence in the finished

  1134. work of Christ.

1135. And I know that I will not suffer

1136. the second death, not because I

1137. have been a good person all of my

1138. life, because I came to the point

1139. of recognizing the absolute moral

1140. bankruptcy of my soul and

  1141. confessing, I am a sinner justly

1142. condemned before a holy God, and I

1143. believe Jesus came to pay the

  1144. penalty for my sins.

1145. Now, I like the way this argument

  1146. plays out here.

1147. If you look at it, you find here

1148. that as Jesus made this issue of not

1149. dying clear, the Jews kind of

1150. responded and look at their closing

  1151. argument in verse 57.

1152. Jews said to him, you are not yet

1153. 50 years old, and have you seen

  1154. Abraham?

1155. Remember he said, Abraham rejoiced

  1156. to see my day.

  1157. Now, that's a very interesting

  1158. statement.

1159. What does it tell us?

1160. Abraham looked forward to the

  1161. coming of the Savior.

  1162. That's what it's saying.

  1163. Abraham rejoiced.

1164. Hey, how many of you sitting here

1165. this morning, as muddy and as

1166. difficult as your life is, are

1167. looking forward to the day that

  1168. Jesus comes back?

  1169. That is a characteristic of a

  1170. believer.

1171. It says this in 1 John chapter 3,

    1 John 3 chapter mention

1172. they that have this hope purify

1173. themselves even as he is pure.

  1174. What drives you forward?

1175. It is an understanding that the day

1176. is coming that Tim Kenoyer is

1177. going to be in the presence of

  1178. Christ.

1179. And that keeps a guard on my tongue.

1180. By the way, my tongue without any

1181. practice can be an absolute

  1182. cesspool.

1183. It is a reminder of the work of

1184. Christ in my life and my interest

1185. in pleasing him that has slowly

1186. changed first my heart, then my

  1187. tongue.

1188. And you look here and Jesus says,

1189. the Jews said, well, you're not

  1190. even 50 years old.

1191. And look at verse 58.

1192. Jesus said to them, truly, truly, I

1193. say to you, and this is, remember

1194. they loved saying Samaritan, demon?

1195. This is Jesus with a full forehand

1196. slap across the face of the

  1197. unbelieving Jews.

1198. Before Abraham was, what's the next

  1199. word?

  1200. I am.

1201. Well, what does that bring to your

  1202. Jewish mind?

  1203. Remember?

1204. Back in Exodus, poor old Moses chasing

1205. sheep around the backside of the

1206. wilderness, and God comes to him and

1207. says, Moses, you are going to go back

1208. to the land of Egypt and you're going

1209. to lead my people out.

1210. You're going to deliver them from the

  1211. bondage that they're in.

1212. And Moses says, yeah, all right, why

1213. don't you send somebody else?

1214. No, no, burning bush and all that.

1215. And so Moses, all right, says, okay,

1216. when I go back there, they're going

1217. to say, who sent you?

1218. And God says, well, here, get this.

1219. My name is I am.

  1220. The self-existent.

  1221. The self-consuming.

  1222. All.

1223. Everything that you can imagine, God

  1224. is that.

1225. And God says to Moses, you tell them

1226. that I am is sending you.

  1227. And here is Jesus.

1228. If there was anything that those Jews

1229. knew, it was the book of Exodus and

  1230. the call of Moses.

1231. And Jesus says, let me tell you

  1232. something.

1233. Before Abraham was, I am.

1234. Who has the right to tell you that you

1235. may have everlasting life despite the

  1236. darkness of your heart?

1237. Who has the right to promise that he

1238. will raise you from the grave?

1239. Who has the right to assure you that

1240. you're going to spend heaven in his

  1241. presence?

1242. Who has the right to be able to guarantee

1243. to you that with your conversion, you

1244. will enjoy the enabling of the spirit of

1245. God that you, listen to me carefully, you

1246. don't have to stay the slave to your own

1247. passions and your own self-centered,

  1248. unhappy focus.

1249. The only one who can make such an

1250. unbelievable guarantee is the one who is

  1251. the I am.

1252. Let me close by coming back to where we

  1253. started.

1254. At the heart of the gospel of John is this one

1255. recurring thought that I think it's appropriate

  1256. to think.

  1257. Who is Jesus?

1258. And what's that mean to me?

  1259. Who is Jesus?

1260. And what's that mean to me?

  1261. Who is Jesus?

1262. And what does that mean to me?

1263. And I want to tell you this morning as you listen to the

1264. preaching of the word of God, I want you to

1265. recognize this, the scriptures are undeniable clear.

1266. The Bible answer is right in front of you.

1267. Jesus is the Lord and the judge of the whole earth,

1268. and he is the only one who can save sinners.

1269. So a question you have to ask yourself is this,

1270. am I a sinner who has come to the point of

1271. recognizing the moral bankruptcy and the darkness

  1272. of their own soul?

1273. Or do I need, let's stop just for a minute so you

1274. understand me, do I need more empirical evidence?

1275. How many of you understand what I mean by empirical

  1276. evidence?

  1277. Huh?

1278. Do I need anything else to convince me that I'm a

  1279. skunk?

1280. I mean, your friend's been telling you, but you know,

1281. you may not believe them.

  1282. Okay?

1283. Gospel truth begins by helping us understand

1284. there is a holy God,

1285. and someday I will stand before him and give an account for my life.

1286. Will I offer to him my absolute lame excuses?

1287. Will I offer to him my incomplete and half-hearted efforts?

1288. Or will I come to him broken and contrite and say,

  1289. I stand justly condemned,

1290. but I believe you and your infinite grace and love were willing to put your

1291. own son on the cross for my sins.

1292. And the Bible puts it this way.

1293. Whosoever believes in him, what?

1294. Shall not perish but have everlasting life.

  1295. There's another part that I like.

1296. Whosoever believes in him shall not be ashamed.

  1297. Hmm.

1298. Can I tell you, as Christians,

1299. we have the power of God to work in us so that we don't have to be ashamed.

1300. And by the way, when we live lives that please Christ,

1301. we become powerful, effective witnesses.

  1302. Isn't that right?

  1303. People ask us,

1304. how come you're not so unhappy and moody and just full of yourself?

1305. Well, I don't want to take credit for that,

1306. because I'm not the hero in my story.

1307. Jesus found me as a broken and bankrupt, miserable, unwholesome person.

1308. And I came in brokenness and said,

  1309. I'm a mess and I can't solve my problem.

1310. But I believe Jesus died for me and he died for you.

1311. And the scriptures make it abundantly clear

1312. that all those who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

1313. So the decision is, is what are you going to do with who Jesus is?

1314. He is the Savior and he will be your judge.

  1315. Let's close in prayer.

1316. Gracious Father, this morning as we consider the authority and the supremacy of your word,

1317. we are very thankful that Jesus is the one who is the center of the gospel story.

1318. Jesus is the one who is the hope of sinners.

1319. Jesus is the one who steps beyond the shallow pride and arrogance of our spirit

1320. and helps us see that apart from his complete forgiveness

1321. and the payment of his life upon the cross, we have no hope.

1322. And this morning we delight in the sweetness of the gospel

1323. that gives believers joy and unbelievers hope.

1324. Lift up Jesus among us this morning in your precious name.

  1325. Amen.

  1326. Amen.
