  1. Thanks, worship team.

  2. Tell you what, it's a blessing to be able to come to the Lord's house and start a service

  3. ! The focus on the Lord Jesus Christ and what He's accomplished for us, remembrance of what

  4. !

  5. I'm going to segue into our passage this morning and then to be able to look at the Word of

  6. God together and just sit underneath the ministry of the Scripture. And I realize that as a teacher,

  7. as a preacher this morning, that this message is first for me. So, you get to be part of

  8. the fringe benefits of what I've already been able to learn this week. And I understand that

  9. really, the person who's really in the spotlight as I'm teaching is me, because that's the only person

  10. I can change. And I trust that as God's Word teaches us, instructs us today, it'll be more than just

  11. information. That as we walk out of the doors, as we enter the week, that it will be the beginnings of

  12. transformation, maybe the continuation of transformation in our lives. We don't come here on a Sunday morning just to hear some good things from the Bible.

  13. We come here for change. We come here to worship. There really is one audience today. There's one audience and that's the audience of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  14. And as your life is held in the spotlight, and as you evaluate and kind of turn it over in your hands, as you

  15. evaluate in light of the Scripture today,

  16. it's my prayer

  17. that there will be areas of life where we say, you know, Lord, I

  18. need to be more like you here.

  19. That's why we do this. We do this for worship. We do this

  20. so that we can

  21. represent Him in the world in which we live.

  22. Represent Him in our homes.

  23. Represent Him in our workplaces, in our communities,

  24. our families.

  25. And the more we look like Jesus,

  26. the more profoundly we will

  27. impact and influence

  28. the world in which we live.

  29. As I get myself out of the way

  30. so that people are no longer

  31. looking at Andrew Scheer,

  32. but they're looking, hopefully, at Jesus Christ

  33. shining through,

  34. that's when we'll begin to make a difference in this world.

  35. That's why

  36. we come here on a Sunday morning.

  37. And that's the joy

  38. that we have throughout the week

  39. as we take this

  40. eternal Word of God home with us,

  41. as we peer into the Scriptures,

  42. as we learn what God would have

  43. to tell us,

  44. we continue

  45. to refine, and we let the Holy Spirit

  46. refine our lives,

  47. so that day by day

  48. we can look more like Him.

  49. Then,

  50. God will show up

  51. in your community.

  52. Then, students,

  53. God will show up

  54. in your school.

  55. God will show up

  56. in your family.

  57. God will show up

  58. in your workplace.

  59. You have things to complain about

  60. in your workplace?

  61. Things aren't quite the way

  62. you'd like them to be?

  63. Well, the more you look like Jesus,

  64. the more you will impact

  65. your workplace for Christ.

  66. Well, we have been looking through

  67. the story of John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  68. We've seen this account of Jesus

  69. who has been asked by

  70. some special friends to come

  71. and to show up

  72. and to do something significant for them.

  73. John chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  74. which is this account of Lazarus

  75. and his two sisters,

  76. Mary and Martha.

  77. Martha.

  78. And Jesus is about

  79. doing ministry

  80. and He gets this message

  81. from Mary and Martha.

  82. Hey, our brother is sick.

  83. Will you come

  84. and will you help us

  85. deal with this problem?

  86. Now, Jesus had been ministering

  87. for three years

  88. and here we are

  89. in kind of the final few days

  90. of Jesus' ministry.

  91. There's about two to three months

  92. left before the cross.

  93. We're in the home stretch,

  94. really,

  95. when it comes to Jesus' ministry.

  96. And there's been plenty of evidence

  97. that would suggest

  98. if Jesus shows up

  99. and Lazarus is still sick

  100. and He's still with us,

  101. Jesus can fix that problem.

  102. He has shown,

  103. wherever He goes,

  104. whole communities

  105. are transformed

  106. by His touch.

  107. Whole cities are changed

  108. because of His ability

  109. to influence

  110. and impact

  111. and heal diseases

  112. and cast out demons.

  113. Whether you're born

  114. with a certain illness

  115. or whether you come

  116. with leprosy

  117. or whether you come

  118. with blindness

  119. or whether you come

  120. with withered limbs

  121. or whether you come

  122. with a hunchback

  123. or whether this is something

  124. that a doctor

  125. has been trying

  126. to fix for the last 18 years.

  127. One touch,

  128. one word of the Savior

  129. will fix all those problems.

  130. So Jesus,

  131. you just show up

  132. and we'll be okay.

  133. So Jesus gets this word,

  134. this word from special people,

  135. Mary and Martha.

  136. And what does He do?

  137. What would you do?

  138. You get this urgent request

  139. from one of your kids,

  140. please show up!

  141. And you're in the car,

  142. you're moving your way

  143. to their house right away.

  144. But Jesus,

  145. for some reason,

  146. decides to stay.

  147. There is a profound lesson

  148. that Jesus wants to convey.

  149. There is something

  150. more important

  151. than just healing

  152. another disease.

  153. There is something

  154. more important

  155. in Jesus' mind

  156. than just fixing

  157. another problem.

  158. Jesus wants to communicate

  159. a message.

  160. And now,

  161. not just to communicate

  162. that message privately,

  163. He's healed

  164. at least two other occasions.

  165. He's raised two individuals

  166. from the dead

  167. in a private setting.

  168. But now,

  169. He's moving into the public.

  170. Now there is a message

  171. that cannot be missed,

  172. especially considering the fact

  173. that He's just months away

  174. from the cross.

  175. What is that message?

  176. What does Jesus want to convey

  177. to you and to me

  178. this morning?

  179. No, I have to admit

  180. that when I come

  181. to the Scriptures

  182. and especially come

  183. to stories like this,

  184. I have to admit

  185. that sometimes I wonder,

  186. what's the point?

  187. I like the fact

  188. that this narrative

  189. is here.

  190. I appreciate the fact

  191. that Jesus is ministering

  192. to this family

  193. and He's showing up for them,

  194. but what does that do for me?

  195. How does that help me?

  196. What do I do with that

  197. and take that with me

  198. in this week

  199. so that my life

  200. will be different?

  201. We've all memorized

  202. the two words,

  203. Jesus wept.

  204. We know this story well.

  205. And if you haven't memorized it before,

  206. now you have.

  207. You've got John 11.35 down.

  208. But there's an account here

  209. of this running narrative

  210. of Jesus' life

  211. and I think at times

  212. we're in the danger

  213. of just scooting right through

  214. because we've already

  215. heard this story

  216. so many times.

  217. But I've come to see this story

  218. this week with new eyes.

  219. I've come to believe

  220. that this story,

  221. as with other stories

  222. in the scripture,

  223. should infuse within us

  224. fresh enthusiasm

  225. and energy

  226. and passion

  227. for Jesus.

  228. Not only in what He came

  229. to accomplish,

  230. but in how He came

  231. to accomplish it.

  232. That's what makes this story

  233. truly remarkable.

  234. So I want to answer

  235. this question this morning.

  236. What does Lazarus'

  237. resurrection

  238. mean for you?

  239. What does Lazarus'

  240. resurrection

  241. mean for you?

  242. And I'm going to take it

  243. step by step.

  244. These three pieces.

  245. Lazarus,

  246. resurrection,

  247. and you.

  248. And we're going to look at that

  249. this morning.

  250. So let's take a look

  251. briefly then,

  252. or initially,

  253. at the life of Lazarus.

  254. Who was this guy,

  255. Lazarus?

  256. And why is he so important

  257. in this narrative?

  258. First,

  259. I want you to know

  260. that he was an ordinary man.

  261. Lazarus was an ordinary man.

  262. And if you turn back with me

  263. to chapter 11,

  264. verse 1,

  265. you'll see that.

  266. The first few words

  267. of that verse say,

  268. now a certain man.

  269. Now I know this might seem

  270. a little obvious.

  271. Okay.

  272. I get it.

  273. He's an ordinary man.

  274. Big deal.

  275. Here's the big deal.

  276. If you,

  277. like Lazarus,

  278. consider yourself

  279. to be ordinary,

  280. this story is for you.

  281. If you,

  282. like Lazarus,

  283. just seem to kind of

  284. fit in with the crowd,

  285. and there's really

  286. nothing quite remarkable

  287. or noteworthy

  288. about your life,

  289. this story is for you.

  290. Jesus shows up

  291. in this story.

  292. We find that Lazarus

  293. is just a passive player.

  294. Matter of fact,

  295. Lazarus is a lifeless player

  296. in this story.

  297. This story is significant

  298. not because of Lazarus.

  299. It is significant

  300. because of what Christ does

  301. through Lazarus.

  302. So,

  303. if you,

  304. like me,

  305. and like Lazarus,

  306. consider yourself

  307. to be ordinary,

  308. this story is for you.

  309. It's for us today.

  310. Lazarus was ordinary.

  311. He wasn't an apostle.

  312. He wasn't a prophet

  313. like John the Baptist.

  314. As far as we know,

  315. he wasn't a priest.

  316. He wasn't distinguished

  317. in any way.

  318. He was just

  319. an ordinary man,

  320. just another player

  321. in this story

  322. of Jesus Christ.

  323. We do find

  324. that he was a friend

  325. of Jesus.

  326. A special friend,

  327. the kind of friend

  328. that Jesus would actually

  329. spend time with.

  330. And we find

  331. at least one account

  332. before this situation

  333. that Jesus showed up

  334. in the home

  335. of Mary,

  336. Martha,

  337. and Lazarus

  338. in Luke 10,

    Luke 10:38

  339. verse 38.

  340. That's a familiar story too

  341. where Martha's about service

  342. and Mary is about listening

  343. and Jesus commends

  344. the listening part

  345. of Mary.

  346. Lazarus

  347. must have been there

  348. seeing this scene

  349. as well.

  350. Jesus traveled

  351. and spent time

  352. with his family.

  353. It was a special family.

  354. We find even

  355. in our chapter

  356. this morning,

  357. John chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  358. in Mary's plea

  359. for Jesus to come,

  360. she says,

  361. your brother,

  362. excuse me,

  363. so the sisters

  364. in verse 3

  365. sent to him

  366. saying,

  367. Lord,

  368. he whom

  369. you love

  370. is ill.

  371. There was

  372. this affection.

  373. Affection

  374. for Jesus

  375. and affection

  376. from Jesus

  377. to this family.

  378. They felt

  379. a special bond.

  380. we'll find

  381. in chapter 12

  382. as we continue

  383. to make our way

  384. through the gospel

  385. of John

  386. that Jesus shows up

  387. in their house again.

  388. And during the entire

  389. Passover week,

  390. there was situations

  391. where Jesus

  392. would spend time

  393. with his family.

  394. They had a special bond.

  395. But like any

  396. other ordinary man,

  397. we find

  398. in verse 1,

  399. there was a certain man,

  400. now a certain man

  401. was ill.

  402. You ever get sick?

  403. Lazarus

  404. got sick.

  405. He was just like

  406. any other person.

  407. He got sick.

  408. Nothing sets him apart

  409. from you or I.

  410. The impact

  411. of this event

  412. was not due

  413. to Lazarus,

  414. but it was due

  415. to Christ.

  416. And as friends

  417. of Lazarus

  418. and Martha

  419. and Mary,

  420. Jesus

  421. begins

  422. to make

  423. this trek.

  424. But what we find

  425. the people

  426. that preceded him

  427. were friends

  428. of Lazarus

  429. and Martha

  430. and Mary.

  431. There is

  432. some significance

  433. in this gathering.

  434. These influential

  435. individuals

  436. who came,

  437. we find that

  438. in verse 19.

  439. It says,

  440. and many of

  441. the Jews

  442. had come

  443. to Martha

  444. and Mary.

  445. Now,

  446. throughout

  447. the Gospels

  448. we find

  449. this title,

  450. the Jews.

  451. It's used

  452. five times

  453. in Matthew,

  454. six times

  455. in Mark,

  456. five times

  457. in Luke,

  458. but 66

  459. times

  460. in the Gospel

  461. of John.

  462. And in the Gospel

  463. of John,

  464. this title,

  465. the Jews,

  466. is referring

  467. to those

  468. who would be

  469. Jewish leaders.

  470. Those who

  471. had headship

  472. and oversight

  473. over the Jewish

  474. people.

  475. We saw

  476. that in our

  477. recent

  478. discovery

  479. of Jesus

  480. and that

  481. blind man

  482. who was healed.

  483. Remember

  484. the response

  485. of his mom

  486. and dad

  487. who were

  488. afraid

  489. of what

  490. the Jews

  491. would do?

  492. It says,

  493. his parents

  494. kind of

  495. deferred

  496. responsibility

  497. because,

  498. it says,

  499. they feared

  500. the Jews.

  501. For the Jews

  502. had already

  503. agreed that

  504. if anyone

  505. should confess

  506. Jesus to be

  507. Christ,

  508. he was to be

  509. put out

  510. of the synagogue.

  511. This was not

  512. just a

  513. collection

  514. of Jewish

  515. people.

  516. That's described

  517. several other

  518. ways.

  519. A crowd

  520. or the people

  521. or the masses.

  522. But specifically,

  523. the Jews

  524. referred to

  525. those who

  526. were Jewish

  527. leaders.

  528. I love

  529. this.

  530. Jesus

  531. would capitalize

  532. on this

  533. fact.

  534. Somehow,

  535. the influence

  536. of this

  537. family had

  538. reached into

  539. this leadership

  540. of the Jews.

  541. Jesus was

  542. now giving

  543. them one

  544. last

  545. opportunity,

  546. extending

  547. grace one

  548. more time

  549. to this

  550. group of

  551. Jews who

  552. continued to

  553. reject him

  554. time and

  555. time and

  556. time and

  557. time again.

  558. Jesus is

  559. setting up

  560. this awesome

  561. opportunity.

  562. It was by

  563. design so

  564. that God

  565. could use

  566. this family

  567. to showcase

  568. his glory.

  569. Lazarus,

  570. though an

  571. ordinary man,

  572. was a means

  573. of showcasing

  574. God's glory.

  575. That should

  576. bring incredible

  577. joy to your

  578. heart this

  579. morning.

  580. Why did

  581. Jesus delay?

  582. Why a death

  583. and then

  584. subsequent

  585. resurrection?

  586. resurrection?

  587. Was it

  588. simply for

  589. Jesus to

  590. show one

  591. more way

  592. that he

  593. had power

  594. over the

  595. affairs of

  596. life?

  597. Was it

  598. just simply

  599. to convey

  600. his continuing

  601. compassion and

  602. love and

  603. care for

  604. individuals?

  605. Or was it

  606. to make a

  607. definitive

  608. statement?

  609. Was it

  610. to state

  611. categorically

  612. something new

  613. about his

  614. identity?

  615. We find

  616. that Jesus

  617. actually tells

  618. us what

  619. his intention

  620. of this

  621. is.

  622. In verse

  623. 4, he

  624. says this,

  625. this illness

  626. does not

  627. lead to

  628. death.

  629. It is

  630. for the

  631. glory of

  632. God, so

  633. that the

  634. Son of

  635. God may

  636. be glorified

  637. through it.

  638. And then

  639. in verse

  640. 40, several

  641. verses later,

  642. Jesus says

  643. to her,

  644. did I not

  645. tell you

  646. that if you

  647. believed,

  648. you would

  649. see the

  650. glory of

  651. God?

  652. Jesus is

  653. interested.

  654. In staking

  655. his claim,

  656. in helping

  657. to provide

  658. full vision

  659. to his

  660. identity

  661. as God,

  662. establishing

  663. once and

  664. for all

  665. that he

  666. was from

  667. God and

  668. that he

  669. was God.

  670. The only

  671. role that

  672. Lazarus would

  673. play is

  674. that he

  675. would be

  676. dead.

  677. He would

  678. be lifeless.

  679. He would

  680. be just the

  681. subject,

  682. just the

  683. instrument

  684. by which

  685. God's

  686. glory would

  687. show up.

  688. You think

  689. he can do

  690. that?

  691. God's

  692. power can

  693. shine through

  694. ordinary

  695. people.

  696. Amen?

  697. That brings

  698. us to the

  699. resurrection.

  700. Lazarus,

  701. this ordinary

  702. man, and

  703. now this

  704. spectacular

  705. event that

  706. takes place,

  707. this

  708. resurrection.

  709. We find

  710. in verse

  711. 45, let me

  712. read this

  713. for us.

  714. This is

  715. kind of the

  716. beginning of

  717. our passage

  718. for this

  719. morning, from

  720. 45 to

  721. verse 57.

  722. What is

  723. the result?

  724. The result of

  725. this resurrection?

  726. It says in

  727. verse 45,

  728. many of the

  729. Jews,

  730. therefore,

  731. who had

  732. come with

  733. Mary and

  734. had seen

  735. what he

  736. did,

  737. believed

  738. in him.

  739. Many

  740. of the

  741. Jews

  742. believed.

  743. Now we

  744. understand that

  745. this is kind

  746. of the running

  747. narrative, the

  748. running purpose

  749. of the

  750. apostle John

  751. in relationship

  752. to the

  753. writing of

  754. these words,

  755. in the

  756. account of

  757. this gospel

  758. narrative.

  759. As we've

  760. heard many

  761. times in

  762. John 20,

  763. 31,

  764. these are

  765. written so

  766. that you

  767. may believe

  768. that Jesus

  769. is the

  770. Christ, the

  771. Son of

  772. God.

  773. Jesus

  774. stakes his

  775. claim here

  776. in this

  777. passage,

  778. I am the

  779. resurrection and

  780. the life,

  781. I am God.

  782. And up to

  783. this point,

  784. many have

  785. believed in

  786. Jesus.

  787. We find his

  788. disciples believing

  789. in him in

  790. chapter 2.

  791. We find that

  792. many in

  793. Jerusalem believed

  794. when he performed

  795. miracles in

  796. chapter 2.

  797. We find the

  798. Samaritans

  799. believing in

  800. chapter 4.

  801. We find that

  802. many of the

  803. people believed

  804. when they heard

  805. and saw him do

  806. these signs in

  807. John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  808. We see that

  809. even in chapter

  810. 8,

  811. some of the

  812. Jews,

  813. some of these

  814. religious leaders

  815. had this

  816. superficial faith

  817. that wasn't

  818. quite adequate.

  819. We find that

  820. in chapter 8

  821. verse 30 and

  822. 31.

  823. In chapter 10,

  824. we find that

  825. he went his

  826. way across

  827. the Jordan

  828. and many

  829. came to him

  830. and many

  831. believed in

  832. him there.

  833. People are

  834. coming to

  835. faith in

  836. droves

  837. because they

  838. are beginning

  839. to see

  840. Jesus is the

  841. person he

  842. claims to be.

  843. now Jesus

  844. in grace

  845. and mercy

  846. shows up

  847. once again

  848. to these

  849. Jews,

  850. these leaders,

  851. those who have

  852. invited him

  853. into their

  854. homes and

  855. those who

  856. have repelled

  857. him in the

  858. temple,

  859. those who

  860. have sought

  861. to disrupt

  862. and sought

  863. to discredit

  864. his ministry.

  865. ministry.

  866. And Jesus

  867. continues to

  868. extend grace

  869. to this

  870. group of

  871. men.

  872. And now

  873. we see

  874. that many

  875. believe.

  876. They believe.

  877. It is a

  878. pivotal moment

  879. for them.

  880. Up to this

  881. point, what had

  882. been private

  883. is now pushed

  884. into the

  885. forefront.

  886. Jesus' ability

  887. to raise

  888. the dead

  889. and in

  890. seeing this

  891. sign and

  892. seeing this

  893. miracle and

  894. understanding

  895. that only God

  896. is the author

  897. of life and

  898. seeing Jesus

  899. who identified

  900. and connected

  901. himself with

  902. the Father

  903. in this act

  904. of resurrecting

  905. Lazarus,

  906. making a

  907. definitive statement,

  908. I am God,

  909. some believed.

  910. What grace.

  911. Remember,

  912. this was not a

  913. question of

  914. future resurrection.

  915. resurrection.

  916. Jesus was

  917. trying to help

  918. them understand

  919. this is an

  920. issue of

  921. present resurrection,

  922. present life

  923. that I give

  924. to you.

  925. In him

  926. was life

  927. and the life

  928. was the light

  929. of men.

  930. And Jesus

  931. now shows up

  932. to say,

  933. I am life.

  934. I am resurrection.

  935. If you were

  936. standing in the

  937. audience,

  938. what other

  939. proof would

  940. you need?

  941. What else

  942. is there

  943. to do?

  944. What other

  945. sign could

  946. you even

  947. ask for?

  948. Only God

  949. is the author

  950. of life

  951. and Jesus

  952. deliberately

  953. makes this

  954. hard connection

  955. between himself

  956. and the

  957. Father

  958. immediately

  959. before this

  960. miracle.

  961. We see that

  962. in verses

  963. 41 and 42.

  964. His prayer

  965. that says,

  966. I am praying

  967. to you

  968. so that those

  969. who are watching

  970. this know

  971. where this

  972. is coming

  973. from.

  974. It's coming

  975. from the

  976. Father.

  977. No one

  978. asks their

  979. gods to raise

  980. the dead.

  981. No one

  982. even dares

  983. go there

  984. because they

  985. know it

  986. would be

  987. futility.

  988. Only God

  989. the Father

  990. is the

  991. author of

  992. life.

  993. And Jesus

  994. in a

  995. previous

  996. discussion

  997. in John

    John 10 chapter mention

  998. chapter 10

  999. says,

  1000. The thief

  1001. comes only

  1002. to steal

  1003. and kill

  1004. and destroy.

  1005. But I am

  1006. come that

  1007. they might

  1008. have life

  1009. and that

  1010. they might

  1011. have it

  1012. abundantly.

  1013. Have you

  1014. ever

  1015. considered

  1016. what kind

  1017. of life

  1018. God

  1019. has given

  1020. to you?

  1021. Have you

  1022. ever thought

  1023. about that

  1024. resurrection

  1025. life that

  1026. those of you

  1027. who have

  1028. because of

  1029. faith,

  1030. what has

  1031. that life

  1032. accomplished

  1033. in you

  1034. and for

  1035. you?

  1036. He is

  1037. abundant

  1038. life.

  1039. He is

  1040. eternal

  1041. life.

  1042. He is

  1043. godly

  1044. life.

  1045. But he

  1046. is also

  1047. the source

  1048. of the

  1049. redeemed

  1050. life.

  1051. the kind

  1052. of life

  1053. that has

  1054. meaning

  1055. and purpose.

  1056. The kind

  1057. of life

  1058. that provides

  1059. fulfillment

  1060. and true

  1061. gratification.

  1062. The kind

  1063. of life

  1064. that propagates

  1065. life in the

  1066. world around

  1067. you.

  1068. It's the kind

  1069. of life

  1070. that experiences

  1071. life to the

  1072. full because

  1073. it's able

  1074. to conform

  1075. to the

  1076. design of

  1077. the Father

  1078. for us

  1079. and for

  1080. our lives.

  1081. Just as a

  1082. hammer,

  1083. will find

  1084. its greatest

  1085. fulfillment

  1086. in driving

  1087. a nail.

  1088. You will

  1089. find your

  1090. greatest

  1091. fulfillment

  1092. as a

  1093. Christian

  1094. as you

  1095. submit

  1096. yourself

  1097. to the

  1098. giver

  1099. of life

  1100. and as

  1101. you are

  1102. living

  1103. the abundant

  1104. life,

  1105. the design

  1106. of life

  1107. that God

  1108. has entrusted

  1109. to you.

  1110. And we'll

  1111. talk about

  1112. that more

  1113. in a

  1114. moment.

  1115. Notice

  1116. here it

  1117. says in

  1118. the end

  1119. of verse

  1120. 45,

  1121. it says,

  1122. Many of

  1123. the Jews

  1124. therefore who

  1125. had come

  1126. with Mary

  1127. and had

  1128. seen what

  1129. he did,

  1130. believed.

  1131. Isn't that

  1132. neat?

  1133. God uses

  1134. instrumentally

  1135. Mary.

  1136. Whatever

  1137. compassion

  1138. and love

  1139. that she

  1140. poured out

  1141. and then

  1142. received from

  1143. this group,

  1144. she's the

  1145. one who

  1146. they're coming

  1147. out with

  1148. and they

  1149. see this

  1150. miracle that

  1151. takes place

  1152. and it's

  1153. a result

  1154. of the

  1155. impact,

  1156. some impact

  1157. that she

  1158. had in

  1159. their life,

  1160. that they're

  1161. there at

  1162. the tomb

  1163. and they

  1164. see Jesus

  1165. show up

  1166. and they

  1167. believe.

  1168. I wish I

  1169. could say

  1170. that that

  1171. was true

  1172. of the

  1173. entire

  1174. group,

  1175. but there

  1176. was another

  1177. response,

  1178. not only a

  1179. result in

  1180. faith that

  1181. we see in

  1182. point number

  1183. one,

  1184. but also a

  1185. result in

  1186. frustration,

  1187. result in

  1188. faith and

  1189. now a

  1190. result in

  1191. frustration.

  1192. We see that

  1193. show up in

  1194. verse 46,

  1195. but some

  1196. of them

  1197. went to the

  1198. Pharisees and

  1199. told them

  1200. what Jesus

  1201. had done.

  1202. So the

  1203. chief priests

  1204. and the

  1205. Pharisees

  1206. gathered the

  1207. council and

  1208. said,

  1209. what are we

  1210. to do?

  1211. For this

  1212. man performs

  1213. many signs,

  1214. meaning the

  1215. rest didn't

  1216. believe and

  1217. provides another

  1218. confirmation of

  1219. the fact that

  1220. these are part

  1221. of the

  1222. religious

  1223. establishment

  1224. who now

  1225. make their

  1226. way,

  1227. they have

  1228. connections with

  1229. the Pharisees

  1230. and now

  1231. they're ratting

  1232. out Jesus.

  1233. How is this

  1234. possible?

  1235. How is it

  1236. possible that

  1237. they saw

  1238. Lazarus' body

  1239. wrapped?

  1240. And whether

  1241. hovering out of

  1242. the tomb or

  1243. hopping out of

  1244. the tomb,

  1245. but it was

  1246. clear that he

  1247. had been dead.

  1248. They had been

  1249. sitting with

  1250. Martha and

  1251. Mary,

  1252. they had been

  1253. consoling them,

  1254. comforting them

  1255. for the last

  1256. four days.

  1257. Lazarus smells

  1258. like rotting

  1259. flesh.

  1260. And this

  1261. miracle takes

  1262. place in front

  1263. of their eyes.

  1264. And Jesus'

  1265. enemies,

  1266. these individuals

  1267. that go back

  1268. to the Pharisees

  1269. confirm that

  1270. what has been

  1271. claimed to

  1272. happen has in

  1273. fact actually

  1274. taken place.

  1275. He has done

  1276. many signs.

  1277. people

  1278. who are

  1279. not

  1280. in the

  1281. world.

  1282. They do

  1283. not believe.

  1284. How are

  1285. such things

  1286. possible?

  1287. Well, it's

  1288. possible because

  1289. as we find in

  1290. 1 Corinthians 2,

    1 Corinthians 2:14

  1291. verse 14,

  1292. the natural

  1293. person does not

  1294. accept the

  1295. things of the

  1296. spirit.

  1297. For they are

  1298. foolishness to

  1299. him and he is

  1300. unable to

  1301. understand because

  1302. they are

  1303. spiritually discerned.

  1304. There is

  1305. something broken

  1306. inside that we

  1307. are not able to

  1308. understand the

  1309. truth that

  1310. stares us in

  1311. the face because

  1312. the spirit of

  1313. God hasn't

  1314. activated our

  1315. life to be

  1316. able to

  1317. perceive what

  1318. can only be

  1319. perceived in a

  1320. spiritual way.

  1321. But in

  1322. addition to

  1323. that, we

  1324. find in 2

  1325. Corinthians 4

  1326. that Satan

  1327. has blinded the

  1328. minds of those

  1329. who believe not.

  1330. Satan also

  1331. kind of stands

  1332. in the way,

  1333. blinding eyes,

  1334. keeping us from

  1335. seeing the

  1336. beauty of the

  1337. gospel.

  1338. And here's

  1339. another clue

  1340. that these

  1341. Pharisees,

  1342. these religious

  1343. leaders,

  1344. although they

  1345. see the

  1346. evidence,

  1347. it's smacking

  1348. them in the

  1349. face.

  1350. They reject.

  1351. Their hearts

  1352. are hardened.

  1353. So it says

  1354. in verse 47,

  1355. so the chief

  1356. priests and

  1357. Pharisees gathered

  1358. the council.

  1359. Here we see

  1360. the meeting of

  1361. the minds,

  1362. those,

  1363. the greatest

  1364. intellect perhaps

  1365. in the known

  1366. world meeting

  1367. together.

  1368. together.

  1369. We understand

  1370. that those who

  1371. know God's

  1372. law are those

  1373. who, it says

  1374. in the Proverbs,

  1375. the fear of the

  1376. Lord is the

  1377. beginning of

  1378. wisdom.

  1379. They knew God's

  1380. law.

  1381. They had it

  1382. memorized, the

  1383. first five books

  1384. of the Old

  1385. Testament.

  1386. They had

  1387. committed to

  1388. heart.

  1389. They had gone

  1390. to temple,

  1391. they had

  1392. performed

  1393. sacrifices,

  1394. they had

  1395. attended feasts,

  1396. they had known

  1397. the history of

  1398. God's people,

  1399. they offered

  1400. confession for

  1401. sin, they

  1402. provided spiritual

  1403. leadership for

  1404. the people.

  1405. They were it.

  1406. and yet they

  1407. missed the

  1408. most important

  1409. truth that they

  1410. could ever

  1411. embrace.

  1412. What will be

  1413. the outcome

  1414. of such news?

  1415. What will be

  1416. the result of

  1417. such divine

  1418. power?

  1419. What will we

  1420. see in their

  1421. life?

  1422. Will they call

  1423. for revival?

  1424. Will they say

  1425. let's worship,

  1426. let's celebrate?

  1427. No, we find

  1428. in the next

  1429. section, verses

  1430. 49 to 57,

  1431. it resulted

  1432. in finality

  1433. for them.

  1434. Resulted in

  1435. finality.

  1436. One of them,

  1437. Caiaphas, who

  1438. was the high

  1439. priest, this is

  1440. verse 49,

  1441. said to them,

  1442. it is better

  1443. for you that

  1444. one man should

  1445. die for the

  1446. people, not

  1447. that the whole

  1448. nation should

  1449. perish.

  1450. You get that?

  1451. Here is the

  1452. high priest.

  1453. Here is the

  1454. one who

  1455. represents

  1456. righteousness

  1457. for the

  1458. people.

  1459. Here is the

  1460. one guy who

  1461. enters every

  1462. year, once a

  1463. year, the

  1464. holy of holies,

  1465. to act as a

  1466. mediator for the

  1467. people, and

  1468. what is he

  1469. doing?

  1470. He's calling

  1471. for a breaking

  1472. of the ten

  1473. commandments.

  1474. Let's murder.

  1475. Let's take care

  1476. of this Jesus.

  1477. He calls this

  1478. council, we

  1479. find this later,

  1480. it's better

  1481. that one man

  1482. should perish

  1483. for the people,

  1484. not that the

  1485. whole nation

  1486. should perish.

  1487. What is the

  1488. issue for

  1489. Caiaphas?

  1490. Well, we find

  1491. in verse 48,

  1492. the Romans,

  1493. they're afraid

  1494. the Romans will

  1495. take away both

  1496. our place and

  1497. our nation.

  1498. We find from

  1499. Caiaphas' own

  1500. words in verse

  1501. 50, that it's

  1502. better for one

  1503. man should die

  1504. for the people

  1505. and not that

  1506. the whole nation

  1507. should perish.

  1508. They're worried

  1509. about the

  1510. nation itself.

  1511. They're worried

  1512. about the

  1513. traditions and

  1514. they're worried

  1515. about their

  1516. system.

  1517. Jesus was a

  1518. threat to the

  1519. religious

  1520. establishment.

  1521. The writing

  1522. was on the

  1523. wall.

  1524. Jesus represented

  1525. something completely

  1526. different.

  1527. He had a

  1528. different view

  1529. of the law,

  1530. a different view

  1531. of the temple,

  1532. a different view

  1533. of righteousness,

  1534. a different view

  1535. of the heart,

  1536. a different view

  1537. of the Sabbath,

  1538. a different view

  1539. of God.

  1540. Jesus shattered

  1541. everything that

  1542. was familiar.

  1543. Jesus shook

  1544. the foundations

  1545. of their

  1546. traditional

  1547. understanding.

  1548. Jesus, in

  1549. all of his

  1550. I am

  1551. statements,

  1552. was helping

  1553. these group

  1554. of people to

  1555. understand that

  1556. what was

  1557. symbolized in

  1558. the Old

  1559. Testament was a

  1560. reality in

  1561. him.

  1562. It was

  1563. pointing to

  1564. him, but

  1565. they had

  1566. loved the

  1567. symbol more

  1568. than they

  1569. loved the

  1570. object that

  1571. that symbol

  1572. was pointing

  1573. to.

  1574. He says,

  1575. I am the

  1576. bread of

  1577. life.

  1578. Before,

  1579. they had

  1580. received the

  1581. manna in

  1582. the wilderness

  1583. and it was

  1584. sustenance and

  1585. they thought of

  1586. themselves as

  1587. providing this

  1588. or being the

  1589. owners of the

  1590. word and

  1591. those who

  1592. could dispense

  1593. this word to

  1594. others.

  1595. Jesus says,

  1596. I am the

  1597. bread of

  1598. life.

  1599. I am the

  1600. light of

  1601. the world.

  1602. Those who

  1603. had been the

  1604. light to the

  1605. Gentiles was

  1606. now represented

  1607. in Christ

  1608. himself.

  1609. And on and

  1610. on it goes.

  1611. Jesus was the

  1612. fulfillment of

  1613. all that had

  1614. been pointed to

  1615. in the Old

  1616. Testament.

  1617. There is no

  1618. wonder why the

  1619. Pharisees hated

  1620. Jesus.

  1621. Those who were

  1622. given the

  1623. responsibility of

  1624. overseeing the

  1625. religious practices,

  1626. they were seeing

  1627. Jesus as a

  1628. legitimate threat.

  1629. but let's

  1630. not get too

  1631. haughty.

  1632. Let's not get

  1633. too proud because

  1634. are there not

  1635. times in our

  1636. own lives where

  1637. God has had to

  1638. confront us with

  1639. the doctrinal

  1640. premises that we

  1641. once had because

  1642. of heritage and

  1643. tradition but now

  1644. God has woken us

  1645. up and helped us

  1646. to see the

  1647. deficiencies of

  1648. those views.

  1649. Whether it be our

  1650. system of religion,

  1651. our ideas of

  1652. spirituality,

  1653. our structure of

  1654. church, our

  1655. pursuit of getting

  1656. attention, our

  1657. priorities in life,

  1658. our desires are to

  1659. go perhaps to the

  1660. motions and get

  1661. credit for it

  1662. somehow.

  1663. In many ways we

1664. are not a whole lot

  1665. different than the

  1666. Pharisees.

  1667. We need Jesus to

  1668. change everything in

  1669. our lives.

  1670. Jesus.

  1671. Interesting, it says

  1672. in verse 51 that

  1673. Caiaphas did not say

  1674. this on his own

  1675. accord.

  1676. Unwittingly,

  1677. Caiaphas is

  1678. prophesying of the

  1679. substitutionary death

  1680. of Jesus that would

1681. not only be for the

  1682. Jewish nation but

1683. would be for all of

  1684. mankind.

  1685. I find it

  1686. interesting that in

  1687. this event, the

  1688. event that pushed

  1689. these men over the

  1690. edge was the event

  1691. where life shows up

  1692. front and center.

  1693. And their response

1694. to the God of life

  1695. was, kill him!

  1696. Life shows up and

  1697. their hearts are

  1698. exposed.

  1699. Jesus has already

  1700. pinpointed it.

1701. In John chapter 8 he

    John 8 chapter mention

  1702. says, you are from

  1703. below, I am from

1704. above, you are of your

  1705. father the devil and

1706. your will is to do

  1707. your father's desires.

  1708. He was a murderer

  1709. from the beginning

  1710. and has nothing to

  1711. do with the truth.

  1712. I'm life.

  1713. Who will you

  1714. follow?

  1715. Who will you

  1716. embrace?

  1717. And they made

  1718. their final decision.

  1719. We're going with

  1720. death.

  1721. We're following our

  1722. father, the devil.

  1723. We're pursuing the

  1724. murder of Jesus.

  1725. We're getting rid of

  1726. this threat.

  1727. It says in verse

  1728. 53, from that day

  1729. they made plans to

  1730. put him to death.

  1731. This was the moment

  1732. of finality.

  1733. Grace was expended

  1734. for these men.

  1735. It says in verse

  1736. 54, Jesus therefore

  1737. no longer walked

  1738. openly among the

  1739. Jews but went from

  1740. there to the region

  1741. near the wilderness

  1742. to a town called

  1743. Ephraim and there

  1744. he stayed with his

  1745. disciples.

  1746. A ministry that was

  1747. public.

  1748. a ministry that was

  1749. accessible.

  1750. The word that had

  1751. been close to them

  1752. is now withdrawn.

  1753. They had made up

  1754. their minds.

  1755. We don't want this

  1756. Jesus anymore.

  1757. Up to this point

  1758. we have seen the

  1759. remarkable response

  1760. of faith across

  1761. the board.

  1762. We see if you

  1763. chronicle and if

  1764. you've been taking

  1765. notes and underlining

  1766. in the scriptures

  1767. many believed,

  1768. many believed,

  1769. many believed in

  1770. almost every chapter.

  1771. From this point on

  1772. we don't see those

  1773. words again.

  1774. Except for in

  1775. chapter 12,

  1776. verse 11 that

  1777. refers to this

  1778. event.

  1779. But from this point

  1780. on we don't see

  1781. many believing

  1782. anymore in the

  1783. gospel of John.

  1784. Finality had been

  1785. rung.

  1786. This marks a

  1787. radical shift in

  1788. Jesus' ministry.

  1789. It moves from the

  1790. public now into the

  1791. private.

  1792. And now the city

  1793. is on high alert.

  1794. We find that in

  1795. verses 56 and 57.

  1796. They were looking

  1797. for Jesus and

  1798. saying to one

  1799. another as they

  1800. stood in the

  1801. temple,

  1802. what do you

  1803. think?

  1804. That he will

  1805. come to the

  1806. feast at all?

  1807. Now the chief

  1808. priests and the

  1809. Pharisees had given

  1810. orders that if

  1811. anyone knew where

  1812. he was he should

  1813. let them know so

  1814. they might arrest

  1815. him.

1816. The city is put on

  1817. high alert.

  1818. If Jesus comes in

  1819. privately, if he

  1820. comes in secretly,

  1821. let us know we

  1822. want to deal with

  1823. him.

  1824. Isn't it amazing

  1825. that Jesus picks

  1826. that moment to

  1827. parade himself in

  1828. with grand array?

  1829. The triumphal

  1830. entry?

  1831. You don't have to

  1832. worry about missing

  1833. me.

  1834. Another statement

  1835. that he'll make in

  1836. chapter 12.

  1837. So what about you?

  1838. What does

  1839. Lazarus' resurrection

  1840. mean for you?

  1841. What do we do

  1842. with this information?

  1843. First, it's been

  1844. sung about and

  1845. talked about through

  1846. our worship service.

  1847. We know that

  1848. resurrection power

  1849. is for you.

  1850. It's offered to

  1851. you.

  1852. Have you

  1853. embraced,

  1854. received,

  1855. accepted the

  1856. resurrection power

  1857. in your life?

  1858. It is available for

  1859. you.

  1860. Paul talks about

  1861. our previous

  1862. status.

  1863. In Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1864. chapter 2, he

  1865. says,

  1866. you were once

  1867. dead in

  1868. trespasses and

  1869. sins.

  1870. You were once

  1871. like Lazarus.

  1872. You had no

  1873. hope.

  1874. You contributed

  1875. nothing to

  1876. spirituality.

  1877. It was lights

  1878. out for you.

  1879. There was

  1880. nothing you

  1881. could do.

  1882. It was over.

  1883. But, it

  1884. says, but

  1885. God, being

  1886. rich in mercy

  1887. because of the

  1888. great love with

  1889. which he loved

  1890. us, even when

  1891. we were dead in

  1892. trespasses, made

  1893. us alive together

  1894. with Christ.

  1895. The invitation

  1896. that was available

  1897. on that day when

  1898. Lazarus was

  1899. raised from the

  1900. grave and two

  1901. categories of

  1902. individuals were

  1903. there, those who

  1904. believed and those

  1905. who rejected,

  1906. it stands front

  1907. and center.

  1908. That decision is

  1909. offered to you

  1910. this morning.

  1911. Have you

  1912. embraced,

  1913. received,

  1914. taken hold of

  1915. the power of

  1916. the resurrection

  1917. that's available

  1918. for you today?

  1919. It's available

  1920. through faith in

  1921. Jesus Christ.

  1922. As you confess

  1923. your sin, as you

  1924. make him the

  1925. Lord of your

  1926. life, the

  1927. miracle was

  1928. not in question

  1929. for these men.

  1930. It was the

  1931. implications of

  1932. this miracle.

  1933. that were in

  1934. question.

  1935. Resurrection power

  1936. is offered to

  1937. you.

  1938. Number two, the

  1939. resurrection power

  1940. for those in

  1941. faith is in

  1942. you.

  1943. Romans chapter

  1944. six talks about

  1945. this.

  1946. It says, if we've

  1947. been united with

  1948. him in a death

  1949. like his, we will

  1950. certainly be united

  1951. with him in a

  1952. resurrection like

  1953. his.

  1954. It says, if we

  1955. have died with

  1956. Christ, we believe

  1957. that we will also

  1958. live with him.

  1959. Death no longer

  1960. has dominion over

  1961. us.

  1962. You don't have to

  1963. be enslaved to

  1964. sin anymore.

  1965. You don't have to

  1966. perform the

  1967. rituals and the

  1968. duties and the

  1969. bondage that sin

  1970. has once placed

  1971. over you.

  1972. You can be free.

  1973. You can live the

  1974. abundant life that

  1975. God has called you

  1976. to live.

  1977. Free from guilt

  1978. and free from

  1979. self.

  1980. Free from despair.

  1981. Free from

  1982. enslaving sin.

  1983. Freedom from the

  1984. pressures of this

  1985. life.

  1986. Freedom from the

  1987. burden of

  1988. performance.

  1989. In pleasing

  1990. people, you are

  1991. free to live

  1992. in Christ.

  1993. His power

  1994. working in and

  1995. through your

  1996. life.

  1997. And finally,

  1998. there's

  1999. resurrection power

  2000. through you.

  2001. Resurrection

  2002. power through

  2003. you.

  2004. That you can be

  2005. a conduit of

  2006. God's power to

  2007. others.

  2008. As the power

  2009. of God shows up

  2010. in your life and

  2011. people notice

  2012. God, not you.

  2013. They notice God

  2014. shining through.

  2015. Wonderful example

  2016. of this is the

  2017. church of

  2018. Thessalonica.

  2019. This group of

  2020. individuals that

  2021. just were broken

  2022. in every way.

  2023. And Paul

  2024. talks about the

  2025. power of the

  2026. gospel that

  2027. came to them

  2028. and he noticed

  2029. it and because

  2030. of the power of

  2031. the resurrection

  2032. working in their

  2033. life, it says

  2034. that the word of

  2035. God not only

  2036. sounded forth

  2037. among them,

  2038. but in Macedonia

  2039. and Achaia.

  2040. Does our life

  2041. evidence the

  2042. power of his

  2043. life?

  2044. Does our life

  2045. evidence the

  2046. priority of his

  2047. life?

  2048. life?

  2049. I came,

  2050. Jesus says,

  2051. that they may

  2052. have life and

  2053. that they might

  2054. have it abundantly.

  2055. Or is it

  2056. possible that the

  2057. priorities of our

  2058. life actually give

  2059. way and seem to

  2060. point to the

  2061. father, the devil?

  2062. are we of the

  2063. father of life or

  2064. do we represent the

  2065. father of death?

  2066. I just want to

  2067. make a brief

  2068. comment to the

  2069. teens, to the

  2070. singles, to those

  2071. of you who are

  2072. younger.

  2073. father, I see

  2074. this tendency, this

  2075. tendency to be

  2076. caught up with

  2077. the grotesque, this

  2078. tendency to be

  2079. caught up and

  2080. involved in those

  2081. that are exalting

  2082. violence and

  2083. brutality, those

  2084. that are grisly and

  2085. horrifying.

  2086. The games that we

  2087. play, the video

  2088. gaming that we do,

  2089. the music that we

  2090. listen to, the

  2091. things that we

  2092. watch on TV, the

  2093. things that we do

  2094. on Halloween, the

  2095. ways that we dress

  2096. up, the athletics

  2097. that we enjoy to

  2098. watch, that exalt

  2099. brutality, exalt

  2100. death, which is

  2101. from the author of

  2102. death and not from

  2103. the author of life.

  2104. Does our life

  2105. advocate life?

  2106. Does life show up

  2107. in us?

  2108. the life of God

  2109. showing through, that

  2110. we treasure life, we

  2111. have a love for

  2112. life that dominates

  2113. our focus, our

  2114. service, attention,

  2115. resources, affection,

  2116. prayers, leisure,

  2117. passion, and

  2118. priorities.

  2119. That we must

  2120. promote life as a

  2121. representative of

  2122. God, who is the

  2123. God of resurrection

  2124. and life.

  2125. Let's pray.

2126. Lord, as we look at

  2127. the life of

  2128. Lazarus, and we

  2129. see that although

  2130. an ordinary man,

  2131. you showed up and

  2132. you made his story

  2133. truly amazing.

  2134. And not because of

  2135. Lazarus, but because

  2136. of your resurrection

  2137. life that transformed

  2138. his dead status,

  2139. God of

  2140. God, you

  2141. could be a

  2142. testimony to what

  2143. you could accomplish.

2144. And as we'll see in

  2145. chapter 12, it was a

  2146. testimony that

  2147. continued to smack

  2148. the Pharisees in the

  2149. face.

2150. And this morning, as we

  2151. evaluate our own

  2152. lives, God, I pray

  2153. that we would be

  2154. conduits of life.

2155. I pray that our lives

  2156. would demonstrate the

  2157. power of God working

  2158. through, helping us

  2159. to overcome the

  2160. dead works of

  2161. unrighteousness and

  2162. moving forward to

  2163. abundant life and

  2164. obedience so that we

  2165. can exalt the God

  2166. of life.

  2167. So this morning, if

  2168. you don't know

  2169. Jesus, if you've

  2170. not experienced that

  2171. power, that

  2172. resurrection power

  2173. that transforms life,

  2174. that helps to

  2175. establish fellowship

  2176. with God, we would

2177. love to invite you to

  2178. experience that.

  2179. God, and maybe you

  2180. have accepted Christ

  2181. as your Savior, but

  2182. you know that there

  2183. are things in your

  2184. life that mimic the

  2185. old life that you

  2186. once had.

  2187. Conformity to dead

  2188. works and not

  2189. demonstrating conformity

  2190. to obedience to

  2191. Jesus.

2192. We would love to pray

  2193. with you.

  2194. So Lord, we pray.

  2195. We pray that you

2196. would do a work in

  2197. us this moment.

2198. help us to be a

  2199. church that reflects

  2200. the life-giving

  2201. words, message, and

  2202. testimony of our

  2203. Savior.

  2204. We pray in Jesus'

  2205. name.

  2206. Amen.

  2207. Let's pray.
