  1. Let's begin with prayer.

  2. Father, our gracious Father, we do not pray out of habit.

  3. We do not pray because it is something that is planned and a formal part of worship.

  4. We pray because our hearts are inclined towards you by your grace.

  5. We pray because we are needy.

  6. We pray because you are sufficient.

  7. We pray because we are frail, inclined to all the wrong things.

  8. And this morning we would ask that your spirit would quicken our hearts, that the sweet words

  9. of Psalm 119 would be true, that we would have hearts that are opened to hear wonderful things

  10. out of your law.

  11. We pray that we have soil that is suited, that the word of Christ may fall upon prepared hearts

  12. and bear fruit that brings glory to your name.

  13. We pray because there are some here that don't know Christ.

  14. And that in the light of eternity, this moment is critical.

  15. We pray that you would bring conviction where there is that need for revival.

  16. We pray that you would enable me and my frailty and my very earthy vessel would reflect your glory.

  17. And that your people would delight in you.

  18. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  19. Amen.

  20. Amen.

  21. I want to leave you with a couple thoughts.

  22. I'm not leaving yet, but I just want to be sure these stick.

  23. Whoa.

  24. Early departure.

  25. No.

  26. Here we go.

  27. I want you to kind of frame this in your life and think about it.

  28. We cannot worship apart from truth.

  29. I want you to hold on to that.

  30. We cannot worship apart from truth.

  31. We cannot grow apart from truth.

  32. Now, I've got two pieces out here, so what I want you to do is,

  33. and this is a little bit of foretaste of what we're going to do tonight, right?

  34. All of you are going to be here, right?

  35. All God's people said, well, maybe.

  36. Okay.

  37. I know.

  38. Some of you have very pressing details.

  39. Okay.

  40. We've got two pieces on.

  41. Here's what I want you to do.

  42. I want you to think if you can attach a Bible text to the two statements I've made so far.

  43. Is that fair?

  44. Isaiah chapter 8 says this,

    Isaiah 8 chapter mention

  45. According to the law and to the testimonies,

  46. if they speak not according to this,

  47. it's because there's no truth in them.

  48. And we know what the Bereans did.

  49. You know, they were more noble than those in Thessalonica

  50. because what they did was,

  51. as they listened to Paul preach,

  52. and they didn't have their phones in front of them,

  53. they were swiping to kind of check and see,

  54. but they were cross-referencing everything Paul said against the Scriptures.

  55. So I made the statement,

  56. you can't worship apart from truth.

  57. Yeah?

  58. Where's that?

  59. I made the statement,

  60. you can't grow apart from truth.

  61. Yeah?

  62. Where's that?

  63. There's the third one.

  64. We cannot love him apart from truth.

  65. And so one of the things that I trust

  66. is happening in this slow and methodic journey

  67. that we're taking through the book of John,

  68. and we are in John chapter 12,

    John 12:1

  69. verse 1.

  70. As we are taking this slow and methodic journey

  71. through the book of John,

  72. one of the things that I sincerely trust is happening

  73. is that you are growing in your affection

  74. for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  75. We live in a wicked and perverse world.

  76. And not only do we live in a wicked and perverse world,

  77. but every one of us who are here,

  78. at least that are sensible to spiritual realities,

  79. know that we also carry in us this very frail heart

  80. that is inclined towards things of less than noble propositions, right?

  81. I like the words of the songwriter.

  82. It said,

  83. prone to wander, Lord, I feel it.

  84. Prone to leave the God I love.

  85. Take my heart, oh, take and seal it.

  86. Right?

  87. Do something with this heart I have.

  88. In relationship to this passage,

  89. I'm going to close with a statement.

  90. That's at least the plan.

  91. I'm going to tell you ahead of time

  92. so that you know how it's going to end up.

  93. And you may even write it on your notes

  94. because it's something I want you to frame and hold on to.

  95. Two choices on the shelf.

  96. Worship Christ or worship self.

  97. Not original with me.

  98. I want you to know that for certain.

  99. But really, at the heart of the lesson

  100. that we're going to take from this passage

  101. in John chapter 12

    John 12 chapter mention

  102. is this fundamental truth of the reality

  103. that we are all worshipers.

  104. As I listened to you sing this morning,

  105. I couldn't help but take pleasure in it.

  106. I like the way you sing.

  107. And you know why I like that?

  108. Because I just cannot,

  109. I cannot understand people who go to church

  110. and say they're there to worship

  111. and then kind of sit there

  112. with kind of a glum spirit on their face.

  113. You know, it's like,

  114. yeah, I know the words,

  115. but I'm not in it today.

  116. Hey, you know what?

  117. He is happy to help you with that attitude.

  118. How many of you know that?

  119. You know, one of the things I love about salvation

  120. is you don't have to stay the way you are.

  121. And people that love Jesus

  122. have every reason to sing.

  123. By the way, Pastor, I wrote this on my hand.

  124. The last part of every sermon

  125. or every service

  126. is that your pastor is going to read

  127. a passage of Scripture.

  128. Pastor Shear, I'm going to be in that place,

  129. so I'm going to ask you to read

  130. Psalm 96, 7 through 9.

  131. It's...

  132. Got it.

  133. I make little notes to myself.

  134. That's the way I get around.

  135. John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  136. Six days before the Passover,

  137. Jesus therefore came to Bethany

  138. where Lazarus was,

  139. whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

  140. So they gave a dinner for him.

  141. There Martha served,

  142. and Lazarus was one of those

  143. reclining with him at the table.

  144. Mary therefore took a pound

  145. of expensive ointment

  146. made from pure nard

  147. and anointed the feet of Jesus

  148. and wiped his feet with her hair.

  149. The house was filled

  150. with the fragrance of the perfume.

  151. But Judas Iscariot,

  152. one of his disciples,

  153. he who was about to betray him,

  154. said,

  155. Why was not this ointment

  156. not sold for 300 denarii

  157. and given to the poor?

  158. He said this not because

  159. he cared about the poor,

  160. because he was a thief.

  161. And having charged the money bag,

  162. he used to help himself

  163. to what was put in it.

  164. Jesus said,

  165. Leave her alone.

  166. So that she may keep it

  167. for the day of my burial.

  168. For the poor you always have with you,

  169. but you do not always have me.

  170. Let me remind you

  171. that essentially

  172. what we're looking at

  173. in this passage,

  174. kind of press it together,

  175. is we're looking at

  176. two stark differences

  177. in what worship looks like.

  178. Remember what I said

  179. the end of the sermon is?

  180. But two choices on the shelf,

  181. worship Christ or worship self.

  182. You can see here,

  183. Mary is one illustration of worship

  184. and Judas is another illustration of worship.

  185. We tend to think that worship

  186. is something that we only do towards God,

  187. and that's not true at all.

  188. We are worshiping all the time.

  189. I was struck

  190. by the fact that

  191. yesterday there were

  192. 30 of our men,

  193. I don't know how many ladies,

  194. were ladies involved in the move as well?

  195. Absolutely.

  196. Children as well?

  197. We had 30 people show up

  198. to conduct worship services

  199. at Drew and Melissa Clausen's home.

  200. Okay, now you're wondering

  201. what's that all about?

  202. Hey, when you sacrifice

  203. your Saturday morning

  204. to go and move

  205. a brother and a sister in Christ,

  206. that's worship.

  207. Isn't it?

  208. And worship is something

  209. that we're always doing.

  210. And I think it's important

  211. to realize that.

  212. And so as you look at this passage

  213. and you step into it,

  214. there are a couple things

  215. I think are important

  216. to lay out for us

  217. that we have in mind.

  218. First of all,

  219. let's grasp the setting.

  220. It is worth remembering

  221. that John's gospel

  222. is substantially different

  223. from Matthew, Mark, and Luke,

  224. which we refer to as the synoptics.

  225. And John really only gives us

  226. seven miracles.

  227. He gives us very, very little detail

  228. about Christ's life.

  229. On the other hand,

  230. John's gospel is the most focused

  231. on the last week

  232. before the crucifixion.

  233. In fact,

  234. John actually spends

  235. about half of his gospel

  236. in the week

  237. preceding and in the crucifixion.

  238. Mark only uses about 20%

  239. to cover the crucifixion.

  240. Matthew uses about one-third.

  241. Luke, only a fourth.

  242. And as we step into the passage

  243. in this particular study,

  244. I want you to recognize

  245. that we're actually stepping

  246. into the last week

  247. of Christ's ministry

  248. and what takes place

  249. actually happens

  250. less than a week

  251. from his death.

  252. Now, did Jesus know

  253. he was going to die?

  254. Did he know that?

  255. Did he know how many days

  256. were going to pass

  257. before that happened?

  258. Absolutely.

  259. There was not a thing

  260. hidden from him

  261. and he had spoken

  262. over and over again

  263. to his disciples

  264. about what was coming.

  265. And so as our passage

  266. records this week

  267. before the cross,

  268. I want you to kind of

  269. fix in your mind

  270. that this week

  271. before the cross

  272. is really the most

  273. momentous week

  274. of all of history.

  275. Now, again,

  276. when a pastor makes

  277. a statement like that,

  278. God's people should be

  279. doing what?

  280. Yeah?

  281. Yeah?

  282. I'm not sure about that.

  283. There's some other

  284. pretty important weeks,

  285. am I right?

  286. What would be

  287. an important week?

  288. Creation, right?

  289. And yet,

  290. as someone threw

  291. resurrection out there,

  292. we'll kind of tag that in

  293. with the week,

  294. I suppose.

  295. But, yeah,

  296. without the resurrection,

  297. the cross is worthless,

  298. correct?

  299. But,

  300. it tells us in 1 Peter

  301. that angels,

  302. when they look at

  303. the issue of grace

  304. and what Christ has done

  305. in saving us,

  306. that they're just

  307. kind of overwhelmed

  308. and awed.

  309. And we do know that

  310. during the creation week,

  311. what were they doing?

  312. They were hooping it up

  313. because they were pretty

  314. impressed with

  315. God's creative power.

  316. They enjoyed what they saw,

  317. they were impressed by it.

  318. But during the part

  319. of time that passed

  320. in Christ's redemptive work,

  321. they kind of put their hand

  322. over their mouth

  323. and they're just in awe.

  324. So, here we are

  325. in John chapter 12,

    John 12:1

  326. verse 1 and 2.

  327. And what we find

  328. is that John,

  329. in a good journalistic approach,

  330. he gives us the who.

  331. He tells us when

  332. and he tells us where.

  333. And we're not going to

  334. delve into all of that,

  335. just mark the fact

  336. that we have a picture here

  337. of Jesus coming

  338. to a dinner

  339. and he is coming

  340. with at least 17 other people.

  341. There's Lazarus,

  342. there's Martha,

  343. there's Mary,

  344. and himself,

  345. and then his 12.

  346. And I want you

  347. to just imagine,

  348. if you would,

  349. that here is Jesus

  350. walking towards

  351. this dinner party,

  352. knowing what is going

  353. to happen.

  354. knowing the things

  355. that are going to be said.

  356. Knowing the import

  357. and the significance

  358. of what lay in front of him.

  359. And he steps into this setting

  360. and we find that the dinner

  361. is in the process

  362. of being played out.

  363. We know that

  364. because it tells us there

  365. that Martha served.

  366. It was happening.

  367. It is interesting,

  368. and I think it's worth noting

  369. that previously,

  370. in the last dinner

  371. that we have

  372. when Martha and Mary

  373. were together,

  374. remember,

  375. Martha was busy

  376. doing her thing

  377. and what was Mary doing?

  378. She wasn't participating

  379. in dishes and dinner.

  380. She was just sitting there

  381. listening to Jesus.

  382. And in that case,

  383. Martha takes it upon herself

  384. to go and talk to Jesus

  385. about the fact

  386. that her sister

  387. was falling down

  388. on the job.

  389. I'm impressed

  390. by the fact

  391. Martha evidently

  392. learned something

  393. and she didn't make

  394. the same mistake twice.

  395. She listened.

  396. She observed.

  397. She went about her business.

  398. And we find that Mary

  399. was not attached

  400. with that serving part.

  401. What does Mary do?

  402. I want you to look

  403. at the passage there

  404. in verse 3

  405. and mark,

  406. if you will,

  407. just the absolute brevity

  408. with which Scripture

  409. describes what Mary did.

  410. Let me read it to you.

  411. Mary therefore took

  412. a pound of expensive ointment

  413. made from pure nard

  414. and anointed the feet

  415. of Jesus

  416. and wiped His feet

  417. with her hair.

  418. The house was filled

  419. with the fragrance

  420. of the perfume.

  421. I'm struck by

  422. such a significant act

  423. being given

  424. merely one text,

  425. a verse.

  426. It's interesting

  427. to actually find

  428. that this ministry

  429. that Mary engaged in

  430. is also referenced

  431. in at least two

  432. of the other Gospels.

  433. And let me just

  434. read the passage for you

  435. so you can frame it

  436. from what we find elsewhere.

  437. There in Matthew 26,

    Matthew 26:7

  438. verse 7,

  439. it says this,

  440. A woman came up to Him

  441. with an alabaster flask

  442. of very expensive ointment

  443. and she poured it

  444. on His head

  445. as He was reclined

  446. at the table.

  447. Mark 14, verse 3,

    Mark 14:3

  448. A woman came

  449. with an alabaster flask

  450. of ointment

  451. of pure nard

  452. very costly

  453. and anointed the feet

  454. of Jesus

  455. and she broke the flask

  456. and poured it

  457. on His head.

  458. So I want you

  459. to stop just for a moment

  460. and we're going to

  461. step back

  462. and recognize

  463. something about Martha

  464. before we move on.

  465. You'll remember earlier

  466. in John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  467. that when Jesus came

  468. to Bethany

  469. where He had come

  470. to raise Lazarus

  471. from the dead,

  472. it was Mary

  473. who was grieving

  474. in the home

  475. and didn't come out

  476. to greet Jesus.

  477. When Martha came

  478. and she had that discourse

  479. with Jesus,

  480. one of the things

  481. that I am impressed by

  482. is that Martha

  483. had worshipped Christ

  484. with her confession

  485. of faith.

  486. Do you remember

  487. what she said?

  488. John 11, verse 27,

    John 11:27

  489. You are the Christ,

  490. the Son of God,

  491. who is coming

  492. into the world.

  493. A very significant

  494. declaration

  495. of her absolute

  496. confidence

  497. that Jesus standing

  498. in front of her

  499. was indeed the Christ,

  500. the Son of God,

  501. the one that had been

  502. prophesied

  503. as a fulfillment

  504. of God's promise

  505. going all the way back

  506. to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  507. She believed in Christ

  508. and her worship

  509. was a confessional one,

  510. something she said.

  511. We find a different

  512. picture here of Mary

  513. and Mary's worship

  514. was one of her

  515. costly act of giving.

  516. The alabaster jar

  517. of pure nard

  518. must have been

  519. hers personally

  520. and we're not told

  521. the details of it

  522. but I can imagine

  523. that,

  524. just imagine

  525. that you have

  526. something

  527. that is

  528. so expensive.

  529. It represented

  530. one year's wages.

  531. Now,

  532. let's just do

  533. a little bit

  534. of exercise here.

  535. How many of you

  536. remember what was

  537. on your taxes

  538. when you filed them?

  539. Does anybody remember?

  540. Just in broad terms,

  541. I see some of you smiling.

  542. You don't need

  543. to shout out numbers

  544. but I just want you

  545. to imagine that

  546. proportionally

  547. that's what this represents.

  548. Now,

  549. if we're going to spend

  550. a year's wages,

  551. right,

  552. what kind of things

  553. would we like

  554. to get out of that?

  555. I see you're going

  556. to buy yourself

  557. a house.

  558. I mean,

  559. you know,

  560. well,

  561. not a year's wages

  562. but you want

  563. something that's

  564. going to last.

  565. Would you like

  566. something that would

  567. last?

  568. How many of you

  569. would willingly

  570. pour out,

  571. how many of you

  572. would burn

  573. a year's wages,

  574. just light it up

  575. and let it go?

  576. Now,

  577. perfume

  578. has a little

  579. longer

  580. last

  581. to it

  582. than

  583. burning

  584. dollar bills.

  585. But I do want

  586. you to know

  587. that within

  588. a short period

  589. of time,

  590. what happens

  591. to perfume?

  592. It evaporates.

  593. It disappears.

  594. The aroma,

  595. the odor

  596. from that perfume

  597. is dissipated.

  598. It's gone.

  599. And so,

  600. here is Mary.

  601. She brings that

  602. which belongs

  603. to herself.

  604. And I'm struck

  605. also by the fact

  606. that just earlier,

  607. her brother

  608. had died.

  609. Right?

  610. It was not

  611. unusual

  612. for the Jews

  613. in preparing

  614. the body

  615. of a loved

  616. one

  617. to use

  618. spices,

  619. anointments,

  620. and perfumes.

  621. They did not

  622. embalm

  623. individuals back

  624. in the good

  625. old days,

  626. right?

  627. And nobody

  628. walked past

  629. the casket

  630. and said,

  631. my,

  632. don't they

  633. look good.

  634. You know,

  635. they used

  636. heavy perfumes

  637. and things like

  638. that.

  639. Guess why?

  640. In place

  641. of refrigeration

  642. and embalming,

  643. they were hoping

  644. in some kind

  645. of,

  646. and you remember

  647. when they prepared

  648. Jesus' body

  649. for burial,

  650. how many pounds

  651. of spices

  652. did they use?

  653. Who knows?

  654. 75 pounds

  655. of spices,

  656. okay?

  657. I just finished

  658. reading that passage

  659. this morning,

  660. so it's kind of

  661. fresh in my mind.

  662. 75 pounds

  663. of spices.

  664. That's a lot.

  665. Martha

  666. and Mary

  667. had lost

  668. their brother.

  669. Mary had

  670. chosen not

  671. to use this

  672. for her

  673. brother's burial.

  674. And yet,

  675. here she comes

  676. and she

  677. pours it out.

  678. She breaks

  679. the neck

  680. of the alabaster

  681. flask

  682. and she pours

  683. it on his head,

  684. Jesus' head,

  685. and down

  686. onto his feet.

  687. And I've got

  688. to tell you

  689. that it goes

  690. without saying

  691. that Mary

  692. did something

  693. exceptional

  694. and stunning.

  695. Let me spell

  696. it out for you.

  697. For one thing,

  698. Mary's expenditure

  699. was great.

  700. This had to

  701. represent

  702. a very significant

  703. part

  704. of her life.

  705. I want you

  706. to imagine

  707. the thought

  708. processes

  709. that went

  710. through her mind

  711. in actually

  712. coming to the

  713. place of deciding

  714. that it was

  715. a reasonable

  716. thing

  717. to buy

  718. that perfume.

  719. One of the

  720. things I did

  721. last week

  722. was I actually

  723. did a little

  724. bit of

  725. internet search

  726. of what

  727. kind of

  728. perfumes

  729. were really

  730. expensive.

  731. Just raise

  732. your hand

  733. from the elbow

  734. up.

  735. How many

  736. of you

  737. know of

  738. perfumes

  739. that cost

  740. over a dollar?

  741. You're good.

  742. Okay.

  743. How many

  744. of you know

  745. perfumes that

  746. cost over

  747. a hundred

  748. dollars?

  749. Just up

  750. from the elbow.

  751. That's all I'm

  752. looking for.

  753. How many

  754. of you know

  755. perfumes that

  756. cost more

  757. than a

  758. thousand

  759. dollars?

  760. Ah,

  761. yeah,

  762. I got it.

  763. How many

  764. of you

  765. can imagine

  766. spending

  767. let's say

  768. fifty thousand

  769. dollars

  770. for a

  771. little

  772. little

  773. flask

  774. of perfume?

  775. How many

  776. of you know

  777. what buyer's

  778. remorse

  779. and anxiety

  780. is?

  781. How many

  782. of you

  783. should I

  784. have done

  785. that?

  786. You know,

  787. and here

  788. is Mary

  789. who bought

  790. that.

  791. There's

  792. hers.

  793. And here

  794. is Jesus.

  795. And she

  796. willingly,

  797. consciously,

  798. deliberately

  799. broke that

  800. flask and

  801. poured it on

  802. his head

  803. and poured

  804. it on

  805. his feet.

  806. great.

  807. There's

  808. something else

  809. that I want

  810. you to

  811. appreciate.

  812. Mary's

  813. humility

  814. was great.

  815. I think

  816. it's safe

  817. to say

  818. that there

  819. is not

  820. a single

  821. woman in

  822. this room

  823. that has

  824. ever

  825. abased

  826. herself

  827. at

  828. anyone's

  829. feet

  830. and ever

  831. wiped

  832. someone

  833. else's

  834. feet

  835. with her

  836. hair.

  837. Huh?

  838. Anybody?

  839. No?

  840. My bride

  841. is homesick

  842. today and

  843. I'll tell

  844. this,

  845. you know,

  846. she doesn't

  847. mind rubbing

  848. my shoulders

  849. but when I

  850. say,

  851. would you

  852. rub my

  853. feet?

  854. She says,

  855. I don't

  856. touch feet.

  857. Now,

  858. I know

  859. some of you

  860. are just

  861. wonderful,

  862. godly

  863. exceptions to

  864. the rule

  865. but for

  866. the most

  867. part,

  868. it's not

  869. something that

  870. most of you

  871. like doing,

  872. right?

  873. here was

  874. Mary

  875. willing

  876. to let

  877. her hair

  878. down.

  879. Did you

  880. know that

  881. in Jewish

  882. culture you

  883. didn't let

  884. your hair

  885. down in

  886. public?

  887. You never

  888. did.

  889. You never

  890. did.

  891. This was

  892. something that

  893. simply was

  894. not done

  895. and Mary

  896. let her hair

  897. down ahead

  898. of going

  899. in and

  900. anointing

  901. Christ's

  902. feet and

  903. then as

  904. she was

  905. stooped at

  906. his feet,

  907. she took

  908. her hair

  909. and she

  910. rubbed her

  911. hair over

  912. his feet.

  913. I'll never

  914. forget

  915. the wedding

  916. that I went

  917. to in which

  918. Jimmy,

  919. I think she

  920. married Kadar,

  921. this is

  922. Christy Brown's

  923. sister.

  924. It was an

  925. Indian wedding

  926. and after the

  927. wedding service

  928. was performed,

  929. the ceremony,

  930. you know how

  931. it is,

  932. you have the

  933. wedding and

  934. out go the

  935. bride and

  936. the groom and

  937. everybody's

  938. cheering and

  939. Jimmy stopped

  940. and at the

  941. first pew she

  942. knelt and

  943. kissed her

  944. mother-in-law's

  945. feet.

  946. I've never

  947. forgotten that.

  948. And here

  949. is Mary

  950. who with a

  951. heart that is

  952. so unbelievably

  953. thankful,

  954. she willingly

  955. pours out

  956. not only a

  957. costly gift

  958. but a

  959. profoundly

  960. humbling

  961. gift.

  962. You know,

  963. it's interesting

  964. when you stop

  965. and think about

  966. it that all

  967. worship really

  968. shows worth.

  969. Can you say

  970. that with me?

  971. All worship

  972. shows worth.

  973. All worship

  974. shows worth.

  975. Let me illustrate

  976. that for you

  977. just for a second.

  978. I want you to

  979. look in your

  980. Bible, turn back

  981. to 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 24 chapter mention

  982. chapter 24.

  983. Just look at

  984. this.

  985. This is at the

  986. very end of

  987. 2 Samuel and

  988. you remember that

  989. David was tempted

  990. and decided that

  991. he would number

  992. the people and

  993. God comes to

  994. him and says,

  995. you messed up

  996. and here are

  997. the consequences.

  998. In verse 18 it

  999. says,

  1000. David runs off

  1001. there because

  1002. the people are

  1003. suffering and the

  1004. nation of Israel

  1005. is suffering because

  1006. of David's sin.

  1007. And when Arunah

  1008. sees David coming

  1009. he says,

  1010. what's up?

  1011. And David says

  1012. in verse 21,

  1013. I don't know if

  1014. you have the next

  1015. verse underlined.

  1016. All this,

  1017. O king,

  1018. Arunah gives to

  1019. the king.

  1020. And Arunah said

  1021. to the king,

  1022. may the Lord

  1023. your God accept

  1024. you.

  1025. Now mark this.

  1026. And the king

  1027. said to Arunah,

  1028. no, but I will

  1029. buy it from you

  1030. for a price.

  1031. I will not

  1032. offer burnt

  1033. offerings to the

  1034. Lord my God.

  1035. That costs me

  1036. nothing.

  1037. Do you

  1038. understand that?

  1039. Here was David

  1040. expressing the

  1041. worth of his

  1042. God.

  1043. And here is

  1044. Mary expressing

  1045. the worth of

  1046. our Savior.

  1047. Now what Mary

  1048. did was a

  1049. display of her

  1050. view of Christ.

  1051. She declared

  1052. his worth.

  1053. And when we

  1054. speak of

  1055. worshiping Christ

  1056. and really at

  1057. the end of the

  1058. day, remember

  1059. what I said,

  1060. but two choices

  1061. on the shelf,

  1062. worship Christ

  1063. or worship

  1064. self.

  1065. The truth of

  1066. the matter is

  1067. we are always

  1068. engaged in the

  1069. activity of

  1070. worship.

  1071. The question is

  1072. who is on the

  1073. throne and who

  1074. are we focused

  1075. on?

  1076. Allow me a

  1077. couple practical

  1078. notes before we

  1079. move on here.

  1080. For one, I'm

  1081. struck by the

  1082. fact that we

  1083. find no rebuke

  1084. from Christ or

  1085. from Lazarus or

  1086. from Martha.

  1087. Jesus accepted

  1088. this worship and

  1089. I'm struck by the

  1090. fact in other

  1091. passages you'll

  1092. remember when

  1093. John fell at the

  1094. feet of an

  1095. angel.

  1096. The angel says

  1097. don't be doing

  1098. that.

  1099. Worship God.

  1100. Here's Jesus

  1101. accepting this

  1102. worship and not

  1103. rebuking Martha

  1104. or not rebuking

  1105. Mary for this

  1106. exceptionally

  1107. expensive and

  1108. costly gift.

  1109. Furthermore, we

  1110. know that Mary's

  1111. act of worship

  1112. while condemned

  1113. by wickedness

  1114. lifted up her

  1115. sacrifice to

  1116. eternal significance.

  1117. What do I mean

  1118. by that?

  1119. Turn back.

  1120. You're in

  1121. John.

  1122. You were in

  1123. another passage,

  1124. 2 Samuel, but I

  1125. want you to look

  1126. at John.

  1127. I'm sorry.

  1128. Turn to Mark

  1129. 14.

  1130. Mark 14,

    Mark 14:9

  1131. verse 9.

  1132. Truly I say to

  1133. you, wherever the

  1134. gospel is

  1135. proclaimed in the

  1136. whole world,

  1137. what she has

  1138. done will be

  1139. told in

  1140. memory of

  1141. her.

  1142. That's

  1143. something,

  1144. isn't it?

  1145. Mary's act of

  1146. worship was one

  1147. that ended up as

  1148. a benchmark and a

  1149. reminder to all of

  1150. us of what real

  1151. genuine worship

  1152. looks like.

  1153. So let me stop

  1154. just for a minute

  1155. and ask yourself

  1156. this question.

  1157. What have you

  1158. given him?

  1159. When have you

  1160. ever consciously

  1161. chosen to give to

  1162. him something that

  1163. you were reserving

  1164. for yourself out of

  1165. nothing other than a

  1166. mere expression of

  1167. your worth for him?

  1168. So a practical

  1169. question to follow

  1170. that would be

  1171. this.

  1172. How often has

  1173. your worship been

  1174. as significant and

  1175. as sweet as

  1176. Mary's?

  1177. How often has

  1178. your worship been

  1179. as significant and

  1180. sweet as Mary's?

1181. I got to tell you,

1182. we live in an age

  1183. where the

  1184. vocabulary of our

  1185. culture is a dead

  1186. giveaway.

  1187. How many of you

  1188. have ever heard

  1189. somebody say,

  1190. I'm worth it?

  1191. Two weeks ago I

  1192. was having a

  1193. conversation with

  1194. an individual and

  1195. we were dealing

  1196. with the issue of

  1197. sin.

  1198. And the person

  1199. was trying to

  1200. understand why I

  1201. was concerned about

  1202. what had been going

  1203. on in the

  1204. individual's life

  1205. morally.

  1206. And in the flow

  1207. of conversation the

  1208. individual said

  1209. this, I should

  1210. think more of

  1211. myself and not

  1212. keep doing this.

  1213. I thought,

  1214. what?

  1215. You're not the

  1216. problem.

  1217. It's your view of

  1218. God.

  1219. Do you follow

  1220. that?

  1221. I'm worth it.

  1222. Here is Mary

  1223. saying, Christ,

  1224. you're worth it.

  1225. And I find my

  1226. pleasure and my

  1227. satisfaction in

  1228. giving to you

  1229. that which is my

  1230. best and most

  1231. prized.

  1232. Well, there's

  1233. another person in

  1234. the picture and I

  1235. don't think we

  1236. should miss him.

  1237. Look at Judas

  1238. at his altar.

  1239. Verse 4, but

  1240. Judas Iscariot, one

  1241. of his disciples, he

  1242. who was about to

  1243. betray him, said,

  1244. you can hear his

  1245. attitude, right?

  1246. Kind of snarky.

  1247. Hey, stop just for

  1248. a minute.

  1249. How many of you

  1250. specialize in being

  1251. critical of other

  1252. people?

  1253. Raise your hands if

1254. you want to wave at

  1255. me and say, I'm

  1256. good at that.

  1257. Why was this

  1258. ointment not sold

  1259. for 300 denarii and

  1260. given to the poor?

  1261. Here is Mary's

  1262. beautiful act of

  1263. worship that Christ

  1264. accepts.

  1265. Have you ever been

  1266. amazed at how stupid

1267. you can be and put

1268. your foot in when you

  1269. really should think

  1270. more carefully?

  1271. There is wisdom

  1272. sometimes in just

  1273. being quiet.

  1274. Judas would have

  1275. been well served to

  1276. keep his comments to

  1277. himself.

  1278. No, he opens his

  1279. mouth.

1280. Why did he do that?

  1281. I mean, you know,

  1282. hey, he could have

  1283. said, well, hey, it's

  1284. her business, it's her

  1285. stuff, let her throw

1286. it away if she wants

  1287. to.

1288. No, he had to step

  1289. into it and really

  1290. show his heart.

  1291. The truth is, whether

1292. it is in regards to

  1293. moral purity or

  1294. honesty or the value

  1295. of human life,

  1296. ultimately, truth is

  1297. something that is

  1298. offensive to the

  1299. sinner.

1300. And the sinner is not

1301. going to let truth go

  1302. unchecked.

1303. think with me just for

  1304. a moment of a passage

  1305. over in John chapter

    John 3:19

  1306. 3, verse 19 and 20.

  1307. Remember, Jesus, in

  1308. essence, says this.

  1309. He says, listen, I've

  1310. brought light into the

  1311. situation, and those

  1312. who hate the light,

  1313. right?

  1314. They hate the light

  1315. because their deeds

  1316. are evil.

  1317. I want you to

  1318. understand that true

  1319. worship exposes false

  1320. worship and will always

  1321. stir hatred.

1322. You don't have to go

1323. out of your way, but

  1324. you have to worship.

  1325. And you shouldn't be

  1326. surprised if your

  1327. worship ends up being

  1328. something that is

  1329. maligned, is hated,

1330. because of your joy and

  1331. satisfaction ultimately

1332. in Christ rather than a

  1333. fallen and broken world

1334. in the messiness of the

  1335. place we live.

  1336. It's interesting to

  1337. notice that Judas hid

  1338. his wickedness behind

  1339. false piety and a

  1340. well-known discipline of

  1341. generosity.

1342. It is clear from the

  1343. passage that Jesus and

  1344. his disciples collected

1345. money, and one of the

1346. things that they did was

  1347. they shared it with

  1348. others who were needy.

  1349. And Judas knew that.

  1350. Now, if you want

  1351. something to kind of

1352. chew on when you go

  1353. home, ask yourself

  1354. this question.

  1355. Why would Jesus, did

  1356. Jesus know everything

  1357. about Judas' heart?

  1358. What's the answer?

1359. Over in John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

1360. it says, for he knew

  1361. the hearts of men.

  1362. Remember when his

  1363. disciples were having

  1364. arguments and Jesus

  1365. would say, what's up?

  1366. And they'd say, oh,

  1367. and he'd say, bang,

  1368. he'd tell them.

  1369. He knew what people

  1370. were thinking.

  1371. Why did Jesus let

  1372. Judas be the

  1373. treasurer for the

  1374. disciples?

1375. Go home and chew on

  1376. that one, right?

  1377. But here we find

  1378. Judas having no

  1379. problem whatever in

  1380. voicing his

  1381. criticism.

1382. By the way, I think

  1383. this is the first

  1384. place in the

  1385. Gospels where we

  1386. actually see Judas

  1387. saying anything.

1388. Not very nice thing to

  1389. comment on, is it?

  1390. A critical and

  1391. dismissive spirit is

  1392. often a sign of

  1393. spiritual issues

  1394. elsewhere in a

  1395. person's life.

  1396. Wouldn't you agree

  1397. with that?

  1398. How many of you

  1399. recognize that?

  1400. You don't have to

  1401. work hard to be

  1402. critical and

  1403. sarcastic and

  1404. belittling of other

  1405. people when your

  1406. own spirit is

  1407. frail and struggling

  1408. in your walk with

  1409. Christ.

  1410. When your heart is

  1411. overwhelmed with the

  1412. beauty of his

  1413. grace, there's not

  1414. much of that

  1415. bitterness there.

  1416. Am I right?

1417. So we find here this

  1418. criticism of Judas

  1419. recorded not only in

  1420. John, but let me

  1421. strike something else

1422. for you to attend to.

  1423. Sadly, sadly, when you

1424. look at Mark and you

  1425. look at Matthew, you

  1426. find that the other

  1427. disciples picked up and

  1428. ran with Judas'

  1429. criticism.

  1430. That's a little

  1431. shameful, isn't it?

  1432. So, just a little

  1433. note to self.

1434. Do not be a person

  1435. who spends energy in

  1436. being critical of

  1437. everybody else because

  1438. usually it's a

  1439. reflective note of

  1440. your own heart.

  1441. Secondly, don't cause

  1442. other people to

  1443. stumble by your own

  1444. bitterness.

  1445. Yes.

1446. So I want you to

1447. think with me as we

  1448. close of some

  1449. practical application.

  1450. We're all

  1451. worshipers.

  1452. We're all

  1453. worshipers.

  1454. And we're

  1455. worshiping all the

  1456. time.

  1457. The question is not

  1458. if we worship.

  1459. The question is

  1460. who.

  1461. There are some of

  1462. you here today that

  1463. do not know

  1464. Christ.

  1465. How many of you

  1466. know that sermons

1467. usually end up with a

  1468. conversation about who

  1469. Jesus is?

  1470. Does that make

  1471. sense?

  1472. There are some of

1473. you here that do not

  1474. know Christ.

1475. Can I tell you that

  1476. being a worshiper of

  1477. self is a miserable

  1478. unhappy journey

  1479. towards an eternal

  1480. heartache and hell?

1481. One of the things it

1482. says in the book of

  1483. Isaiah, it says it

  1484. repeatedly, there is no

  1485. rest for the wicked.

1486. It's not just this life

  1487. that will be hard.

  1488. Eternity will be

  1489. marred with unending

  1490. sorrow.

  1491. And the most bitter

  1492. experience of separation

  1493. from the glory and

  1494. sweetness of Christ.

1495. And I would plead with

  1496. you this morning,

  1497. understand this, that

1498. there is no remedy for

  1499. the self-focus of your

  1500. heart.

1501. And there is no way to

  1502. overcome the bitterness

1503. of where you are apart

  1504. from coming with

  1505. brokenness and saying,

  1506. I am a sinner justly

  1507. condemned by God.

  1508. And yet Jesus came

1509. and lived a sinless life

  1510. and was the sacrifice

  1511. for my sin.

  1512. That I, recognizing my

  1513. moral bankruptcy, could

1514. reach out and repent and

1515. call upon the name of the

  1516. Lord and be saved.

1517. Can I tell you, salvation

  1518. doesn't happen because I

  1519. persuade you.

1520. It is the work of the

  1521. Spirit of God.

1522. And if you are here and

  1523. you are under the

  1524. convicting power of the

1525. Spirit, I would plead with

  1526. you in Christ's stead.

  1527. Stop being a miserable

  1528. worshiper of yourself.

1529. Call upon the Lord and be

  1530. saved.

  1531. I told you how it'd end.

1532. So here's the last line.

1533. But two choices on the

  1534. self, on the shelf.

  1535. Worship Christ or worship

  1536. self.

1537. John, would you come and

1538. lead us as we prepare for

  1539. baptism?

1540. And Jessica, if you would.

  1541. stand together.

  1542. sing together.

1543. Simple prayer to the Lord.

  1544. Jesus, draw me close.

  1545. Closer, Lord, to you.

1546. Let the world around me fade away.

  1547. Jesus, draw me close.

  1548. Closer, Lord, to you.

1549. For I desire to worship and obey.

1550. We're going to sing that one more

  1551. time.

  1552. Jesus, draw me close.

  1553. close.

  1554. Closer, Lord, to you.

1555. Let the world around me fade away.

  1556. Jesus, draw me close.

  1557. Jesus, draw me close.

  1558. Closer, Lord, to you.

1559. For I desire to worship and obey.

1560. And holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy holy

1561. Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul, worship His holy name.

1562. Sing like never before, O my soul, I'll worship Your holy name.

1563. The sun comes up, it's a new day dawning.

1564. It's time to sing Your song again.

1565. Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me,

1566. let me be seen in the evening comes.

1567. Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul, worship His holy name.

1568. Sing like never before, O my soul, I'll worship Your holy name.

1569. Sing like never before, O my soul, worship His holy name.

1570. Sing like never before, O my soul, worship His holy name.

1571. You're rich in love, and you're slow to reign.

1572. Your name is great, and Your heart is kind.

1573. For all Your goodness I will keep on singing.

1574. Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

  1575. Bless the Lord

1576. Bless the Lord, O my soul

  1577. O my soul

  1578. Worship His holy name

  1579. Sing like never before

  1580. O my soul

1581. I'll worship Your holy name

1582. And on that day when my strength is failing

1583. The end draws near and my time has come

1584. Still my soul will sing Your praise

  1585. High and deep

1586. Ten thousand years in there forevermore

1587. Bless the Lord, O my soul

  1588. Oh my soul

  1589. Worship His holy name

  1590. Sing like never before

  1591. Oh my soul

  1592. Oh my soul

1593. I'll worship Your holy name

  1594. Bless the Lord

1595. Bless the Lord, O my soul

  1596. Oh my soul

  1597. My soul

  1598. Oh my soul

  1599. Worship His holy name

1600. Lord, I'll worship Your holy name

1601. I'll worship Your holy name

1602. Lord, I'll worship Your holy name

  1603. Amen. Please be seated.

1604. I took my microphone off

1605. So I have to lean in here a little bit

1606. But just to let you know that for us

1607. Baptism is not something that saves a person

1608. Baptism is an outward sign of the inward work of grace

1609. And when a person comes forward to be baptized

1610. What they are doing is coming to give public testimony

1611. To the power of the cross

1612. And the sweetness of our Savior

1613. And it is always fitting for us to hear the testimony of an individual

1614. When they willingly come forward in humility to be baptized

1615. As a public testament of their salvation

1616. So I'm going to ask Jessica to share her testimony of faith in Christ

  1617. I went to Awana

1618. I was listening to Miss Denise Harless teaching the lesson

1619. And we came home from Awana

1620. And I asked Dad questions

  1621. I knew I was a sinner in need of a Savior

1622. I accepted Jesus into my heart after all of that night

1623. And I accepted Jesus into my heart after all of that

1624. Jessica, on the basis of your testimony of knowing Christ as your personal Savior

1625. and your desire to be baptized this morning,

1626. I now baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

  1627. Thank you.

1628. Pastor Shearer, will you come and close with a word of Scripture?

1629. Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples.

1630. Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

1631. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name.

1632. Bring an offering and come to His courts.

1633. Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.

1634. Tremble before Him all the earth.

1635. Take a spirit of worship from this place to every place God will take you this week.

1636. You are conduits of worship to Him wherever you go.

1637. Please Him this week through worship.

1638. Thanks for coming this morning.

  1639. You're just amazing.

  1640. Congratulations.

  1641. Thank you.

  1642. Thank you.
