  1. I would like you to turn in your Bibles this morning to John chapter 12, and I want to read verse

    John 12 chapter mention

  2. ! 20 through 26 and have you follow along. John chapter 12, verse 20 through 26.

    John 12:20–26

  3. Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip,

  4. who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, Sir, we wish to see Jesus. Philip went up and told

  5. Andrew. Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus, and Jesus answered them, The hour has come for the Son

  6. of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and

  7. dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and

  8. whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me,

  9. he must follow me. And where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me,

  10. the Father will honor him. Let's pray. Father, as we come to you this morning with the Word in hand,

  11. thankful that you have given to us the Scriptures, clear and settled in the heavens,

  12. that we come with dependence upon your Spirit, enabling us to have open hearts and understanding

  13. hearts that we might hear and behold glorious truths out of your Word. Those who are here that

  14. know the Lord Jesus, join in praying together that as we learn more about the Lord, that we would also

  15. grow in our love for Him and our willingness to serve Him and our obedience and our submission to

  16. His supremacy, that we would be satisfied together. And those who are here that have not come to faith yet,

  17. my prayer has been, and I know that this fellowship joins together in praying for that same end,

  18. that today, this day, would be the day of salvation for them, that your Spirit would bring them to see

  19. the darkness and despair of their soul and understand that there is no help apart from the work of Christ

  20. and from their calling upon His name as Lord and Savior. I pray that the teaching of your Word would be

  21. marked by the enabling of the Spirit of God and that your people would task together with me,

  22. praying for me, praying for me, and for the Word's impact in their own lives and also in the lives of

  23. others. And we thank you for this in advance. In Jesus' name, amen. Earlier in the week, last week

  24. actually, ended up in a very situation, very interesting situation, having a conversation with a man.

  25. Started out by his saying to me, what day is it? What day is it? He was a little kind of discombobulated and

  26. took me a second to figure out why he was asking, but as things played on, I said, it's Saturday. And

  27. he said, oh, oh, good. I said, okay. And I said, would you like some oatmeal? He said, absolutely.

  28. And the conversation played on, and I ended up actually having an opportunity to talk to him a

  29. little bit about the Lord. And at the start of the conversation, he said to me, I start out an atheist,

  30. and I moved to be an agnostic, and I've become a Christian. That sounded just tremendous. Yes,

  31. I like that. Except he had already told me that he'd been drunk last night, and that's why he needed

  32. to know what day it was. Now, I want you to know that Christians do all kinds of bad things.

  33. How many of you have made mistakes and sinned before? Okay. Okay. Most of us probably haven't

  34. been wasted all night, but we've done lots of things that are not an exact test of our faith.

  35. But here was a guy who started out, you know, letting me know about his previous problem,

  36. and then eventually ended up talking about the Lord, and that kind of led into his, oh, yeah,

  37. I'm a Christian. So I asked him just a very practical question. So how's that going for you?

  38. You follow what I'm saying? How's it working out? Well, I'm not really there, you know.

  39. I said, well, would you like to talk about it? No, I'm good. Off he went.

  40. I bring that up because what we are looking at this morning

  41. is a passage of Scripture that is not written to the unbeliever.

  42. And it is a passage that clearly indicates what following Christ actually means.

  43. One of the sweet truths of the gospel is that salvation brings change to us.

  44. From the moment of our broken heart that brings us to repentance and calling upon the name of the

  45. Lord for salvation, we have a change of address.

  46. We no longer are doomed to spend eternity in hell paying for our own sins,

  47. but because of the finished work of Christ, we have the absolute certain prospect

  48. of eternal joy and glory in Christ's presence.

  49. We also are a different person.

  50. Now, that doesn't mean that all the changes that will take place

  51. have already come about in a practical sense,

  52. but it does mean that we are not who we used to be.

  53. And as we continue in growing in our faith,

  54. we see more and more of the work of Christ in our lives and an affection for Him.

  55. And without question, one of the things that should characterize the person

  56. and does characterize the person who is a true believer

  57. is that they can look in the rearview mirror

  58. and see that things are different than they used to be.

  59. This passage this morning is going to help us understand

  60. and really, in practical terms, gauge, evaluate the authenticity of our own faith.

  61. I will tell you as well that this passage is a convicting passage

  62. and one that will make you uncomfortable

  63. if you are yielded to the Spirit

  64. and the Spirit enables me to preach with Bible authority and humility.

  65. I've got to tell you that one of the things that characterizes

  66. Tim Kenoyer's general study of the Scriptures

  67. is that there's seldomly a week that goes by that I don't say,

  68. this is the best passage.

  69. I'll tell you that.

  70. I have to say that this week I had to add something

  71. that was very pertinent to my own heart.

  72. I had to say, in addition, this is the best passage.

  73. I had to say, this is a passage that makes Tim Kenoyer uncomfortable

  74. and called me to repentance and to change.

  75. We'll see how that plays out in your own life, okay?

  76. Well, let's look at the passage and recognize, first of all,

  77. that as we dive in here and look at verse 20

  78. and play out a little bit,

  79. we recognize that this passage tells us about Christ's global impact.

  80. It's appropriate for us to recognize that what takes place in this passage

  81. is a change of direction in Christ's ministry.

  82. Earlier, Jesus had sent His disciples only to the 12 tribes of Israel.

  83. The starting place of His ministry had been to the nation of Israel,

  84. and over and over again, He made it clear that His presentation

  85. and His offer and His ministry was directed towards the nation of Israel,

  86. to the Jews.

  87. You'll remember when the Syrophoenician woman came and asked that He heal her daughter.

  88. He said, listen, it is unfitting that children's bread be given to the dogs.

  89. And what was her response?

  90. I love this one.

  91. She said, hey, dogs get crumbs.

  92. And Jesus healed that woman's daughter.

  93. But His communication was that, hey,

  94. the ministry that I'm engaged in here at this moment is particularly to the Jewish nation.

  95. When the Samaritan woman came to Jesus,

  96. He made the statement in that passage back in John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  97. He said, salvation is of the Jews.

  98. So here we have on this great time of feast and the Passover

  99. where worshipers were gathering into the city of Jerusalem,

  100. up come a group of Greek worshipers.

  101. That's what we're told here.

  102. And they ask if they can have an interview with Jesus.

  103. Now look at the passage.

  104. It says, they came and asked Philip.

  105. And Philip, instead of going directly to Jesus, what does he do?

  106. He goes and consults with someone else because he's just a little uncomfortable.

  107. He has all that past instruction from Christ as, hey, listen, here's what you do.

  108. Here's how you minister.

  109. And I want you to be focused on the Jewish people and the Jewish nation

  110. and be sure that they hear the message of repentance.

  111. And so when these Greeks came and asked for the privilege of talking with Jesus,

  112. Philip was a little uncomfortable.

  113. And so he goes to Andrew and they probably had a little bit of a discourse together.

  114. Well, I'm not sure.

  115. What do you think?

  116. Let's go ahead.

  117. And they both come together to Jesus.

  118. You get that?

  119. Here they are.

  120. They're in front of Jesus.

  121. And they, oh, by the way, there's a couple Greeks.

  122. You know, they're not Jews, but they like to talk with you a little bit.

  123. It's very interesting here that these Greeks asked to talk to Jesus.

  124. We have no further detail about their motive,

  125. but it's fair to surmise that their thinking had been affected

  126. by the dramatic sequence of events.

  127. They had come to worship, but in that period of time, just prior to the cross,

  128. let me kind of rattle off some of the very significant things that had happened.

  129. For one, Jesus had healed Lazarus, raised Lazarus from the dead,

  130. and that was a dramatic, powerful evidence of his deity and his power.

  131. Secondly, he had entered into Jerusalem with all the fanfare and the regalia.

  132. Remember that he had come with palm fronds being waved and people shouting out,

  133. Hosanna, Hosanna.

  134. They were lit up at the prospect of Jesus coming in as the regal authority

  135. and ruler that was going to bring victory and blessing to them.

  136. Remember they threw down their coats in front of Jesus,

  137. and he came in on a donkey.

  138. That had to be significantly striking to the Greeks.

  139. Furthermore, Jesus had cleansed the temple.

  140. I want you just to stop and think about this just for a moment.

  141. How many of you know where Mecca is?

  142. Anybody know where Mecca is?

  143. Hello, we have some Mecca people here.

  144. Okay, you know where Mecca is?

  145. Can you imagine in your right mind someone going in?

  146. Well, let's try the Dome of the Rock where the golden...

  147. Do you follow what I'm saying?

  148. Just imagine someone going in there and cleaning house

  149. and getting rid of all the false worship that is going on

  150. either at Mecca or in Jerusalem where the Golden Dome is.

  151. Do you think that would cause a little bit of a stir?

  152. What do you think?

  153. I mean, it would light things up.

  154. And the Greeks, no doubt, had heard about Lazarus,

  155. about the wonderful entrance, and cleansing the temple.

  156. And so here we have them coming and asking for an opportunity

  157. to interview Jesus.

  158. They want to learn something.

  159. And here is Jesus who takes advantage of this.

  160. And what He does is He points now to the gospel's global impact.

  161. In including the Greeks and inviting this conversation

  162. instead of repressing it, He makes it very, very clear

  163. that the interest of the Greeks was indicative,

  164. pointed to the fact that the day was coming

  165. when the gospel's impact would not only be of value

  166. in the nation of Israel but would be across the entire globe.

  167. I love the fact that the gospel is not limited

  168. to an ethnic group or to a physical location

  169. like the land of Israel.

  170. It has value to every single person

  171. who comes into the world.

  172. And it is supremely important,

  173. not just to the nation of Israel,

  174. but to all of us because what?

  175. Salvation is the very heart

  176. of what Jesus came to bring to mankind.

  177. And I like the fact that here is Jesus

  178. kind of making an early indication of the fact

  179. that the gospel's flow and impact

  180. was going to transcend the nation of Israel.

  181. It was going to have global impact.

  182. That was actually what was part of the Abrahamic covenant.

  183. Isn't that right?

  184. God made the commitment and promise to Abraham.

  185. He said, through you,

  186. all the nations of the world will be blessed.

  187. How?

  188. By virtue of Christ being the Savior of all mankind,

  189. offering salvation through His finished work on the cross.

  190. Now, as we push further into the text,

  191. you're there in John chapter 12,

    John 12 chapter mention

  192. you'll find that after this little business

  193. of the matter playing out of the question,

  194. hey, listen, there are Greeks that want to meet you,

  195. I want you to notice Christ's response.

  196. And Jesus answered them.

  197. Who is the them?

  198. Answer that question in your own thinking.

  199. Who was Jesus talking to?

  200. He wasn't talking to the Greeks.

  201. They were kind of standing back, you know,

  202. a little bit.

  203. There's Philip and Andrew.

  204. Can these people talk?

  205. Jesus says, hey.

  206. I believe Jesus was talking primarily to His disciples

  207. who had come with this question,

  208. Philip and Andrew.

  209. And He makes it clear

  210. that something has come to fruition

  211. and is at the point.

  212. And here's what Jesus says.

  213. My time is here.

  214. My time is now.

  215. Now, stop and think for a moment again,

  216. and it helps to kind of keep a picture

  217. of the larger context of Christ's ministry.

  218. Over and over again prior to this,

  219. Jesus had made statements like,

  220. it's not my time.

  221. My time is not now.

  222. It's not the moment.

  223. And here He is.

  224. In verse 23, Jesus answered them,

  225. the hour is come

  226. for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  227. I want you to think just for a moment

  228. about how Philip and Andrew must have felt

  229. when they heard Jesus say,

  230. yep, it's time.

  231. This is it.

  232. I'm going to be glorified.

  233. What kind of thinking do you think they had

  234. about what Christ's glory was all about?

  235. Oh, so that you remember,

  236. when they had had the Last Supper together,

  237. immediately after that tremendously spiritual moment,

  238. what had they been bickering about as they left?

  239. Does anybody know?

  240. They were fussing with each other

  241. about who was going to have the right hand

  242. and the left hand

  243. and who was really going to be important in the kingdom.

  244. They were all lit up about the prospect

  245. of being in charge.

  246. That's what they were interested in.

  247. And here is Jesus saying,

  248. it's time.

  249. I'm going to be glorified.

  250. And here they are in the heady rush of thinking,

  251. yeah, it's Hosanna time for real.

  252. And yeah, we're going to set aside that donkey

  253. and he's going to be doing the horse thing

  254. and we're going to be part of it.

  255. And then boom.

  256. Look at it.

  257. Look at it.

  258. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  259. unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth

  260. and dies,

  261. it remains alone.

  262. But if it dies,

  263. it bears much fruit.

  264. Here in the moment of the Greeks coming

  265. and asking for an opportunity

  266. to get to know Jesus a little better

  267. and Jesus making it clear

  268. that all mankind

  269. open to the call

  270. and the significance of the gospel,

  271. here he makes a stunning statement

  272. and what he does is he announces

  273. that his worth and glory

  274. is going to be in his death.

  275. Look at verse 24.

  276. Let me read it again.

  277. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  278. unless a grain of wheat

  279. falls into the earth and dies,

  280. it remains alone.

  281. But if it dies,

  282. it bears much fruit.

  283. I want you to think with me,

  284. secondly, about the fruitfulness

  285. of the cross.

  286. Jesus was at the very pinnacle

  287. of his popularity

  288. and yet in the very same sentence

  289. where he spoke about his glory,

  290. he spoke about his death

  291. and its fruitfulness.

  292. The words truly, truly,

  293. just so you get clued in on this,

  294. are always a signal

  295. of something that is really important

  296. that is going to be said next.

  297. Now I want to frame that.

  298. There's not a word in the Bible

  299. that does not have significance.

  300. We would agree to that.

  301. All scripture is given by inspiration

  302. and is profitable.

  303. But truly, truly

  304. is one of those little signals

  305. that the Spirit of God relies upon

  306. and Jesus relied upon

  307. to say,

  308. hey, pay attention to this.

  309. It's a little bit like

  310. when you were in class

  311. and the teacher would say,

  312. this is going to be on the test.

  313. What did all of you do?

  314. Yeah, yeah,

  315. I've heard that before.

  316. No, that's not what you did.

  317. What did you do?

  318. You underlined,

  319. you know,

  320. test, arrow,

  321. and when you were reviewing

  322. for the exam,

  323. what did you do?

  324. You went back

  325. and looked for what?

  326. You looked for those parts

  327. that you'd underlined.

  328. So you can,

  329. here's what you can do

  330. if you,

  331. and it's not adding to the Bible

  332. when you make a marginal gloss.

  333. You know what a marginal gloss is?

  334. A little note in the margin says,

  335. hey, this is important for me.

  336. This is really something

  337. to hold on to.

  338. Jesus has some advice

  339. you need to pay attention to.

  340. Jesus used the very common illustration

  341. of what happens to a seed

  342. to make the point about his death

  343. and what would follow.

  344. You see,

  345. a seed's fruitfulness

  346. really is impossible

  347. apart from its death.

  348. It doesn't happen any other way.

  349. I told my wife earlier

  350. this morning, actually,

  351. I said, hey,

  352. over the Labor Day holiday,

  353. I actually intend to plant kale

  354. and turnip greens

  355. or a couple other things.

  356. You know,

  357. fall is coming.

  358. How many of you noticed that?

  359. It's a weather change.

  360. Yes.

  361. And so,

  362. in order for those seeds

  363. to actually do anything

  364. and be productive,

  365. I have to put them in the ground.

  366. They have to die.

  367. And then,

  368. something happens.

  369. And here is Jesus

  370. relying upon that

  371. little common fact of farming

  372. to make the point that

  373. his glory

  374. could not be separated

  375. from his death.

  376. He made it clear.

  377. He made it clear.

  378. Glory

  379. and death

  380. are linked together.

  381. And his death

  382. on the cross

  383. would bring salvation

  384. for an unnumbered host,

  385. and it would be

  386. the means of glory.

  387. I want you to look with me

  388. just for a moment.

  389. You're there in John,

  390. but I want you to turn back

  391. to the book of Isaiah.

  392. As I was studying

  393. earlier in the week

  394. and,

  395. well,

  396. last week,

  397. and just pondering

  398. the marvel of this text

  399. and convicted deeply,

  400. I was struck by

  401. what the passage in Isaiah

  402. opens up for us.

  403. And just,

  404. it had a

  405. significant contact

  406. with me.

  407. Look at

  408. Isaiah chapter 53

    Isaiah 53:10

  409. verse 10

  410. and 11.

  411. Yet,

  412. Isaiah chapter 53

    Isaiah 53:10

  413. verse 10,

  414. it was the will

  415. of the Lord

  416. to crush him.

  417. I think in the King James

  418. it says,

  419. it pleased the Lord

  420. to bruise him.

  421. And you stop

  422. and think about that.

  423. I mean,

  424. how many of you

  425. as fathers

  426. have had to spank

  427. your sons?

  428. Don't raise your hands.

  429. I'm not looking for

  430. who has done

  431. and who has not.

  432. But I,

  433. a father that is

  434. guided by the Spirit

  435. of God

  436. and recognizes

  437. that there are times

  438. when discipline

  439. is necessary

  440. would probably confess

  441. that in the moment

  442. there is no pleasure

  443. in what you're doing.

  444. You do it out of obligation,

  445. out of necessity.

  446. You do it because

  447. of the burden

  448. of what you know

  449. is your responsibility

  450. responsibility

  451. as a father.

  452. If there's any potential

  453. of pleasure,

  454. it is at the hope

  455. that your obedience

  456. to the Scriptures

  457. are going to bring fruit

  458. in that little child's life

  459. that are going to be

  460. a blessing to that child

  461. and to the Lord Jesus.

  462. So it's hard for me

  463. to imagine

  464. what this passage

  465. actually says

  466. about God the Father

  467. in terms of

  468. His pleasure

  469. and His satisfaction

  470. in causing

  471. His own son

  472. to die.

  473. That's what's in view.

  474. Isaiah 53,

    Isaiah 53:10

  475. verse 10,

  476. it says,

  477. Yet it was the will

  478. of the Lord

  479. to crush him.

  480. He has put him

  481. to grief

  482. when his soul

  483. makes an offering

  484. for guilt.

  485. He shall see

  486. his offspring.

  487. He shall prolong

  488. his days.

  489. The will of the Lord

  490. shall prosper

  491. in His hand.

  492. Out of the anguish

  493. of his soul.

  494. He shall see

  495. and be satisfied.

  496. By his knowledge

  497. shall the righteous

  498. one,

  499. my servant,

  500. make many

  501. to be accounted

  502. righteous.

  503. Do you get a thrill

  504. when you think about that?

  505. Here's what's being said.

  506. Back in the book

  507. of Isaiah,

  508. it says this,

  509. number one,

  510. that Christ was

  511. a sacrifice

  512. and made

  513. an offering

  514. for guilt.

  515. How was guilt

  516. satisfied

  517. in the Old Testament?

  518. Does anybody have an idea?

  519. You had to make

  520. a sacrifice.

  521. You see,

  522. here's the idea

  523. that we need

  524. to get our hands around.

  525. Underneath

  526. and behind

  527. the reality

  528. of our own sinfulness

  529. is that something

  530. has to be done

  531. about that sin.

  532. I've got to tell you,

  533. throwing coins

  534. in an offering plate

  535. don't do it.

  536. Saying that

  537. you're a pretty good person

  538. doesn't do it

  539. because the heart

  540. is deceitful

  541. above all things

  542. and desperately wicked

  543. and there is no way

  544. that a man

  545. can redeem his heart

  546. by his own activity

  547. and his own effort.

  548. The infinite offense

  549. of sin

  550. deserves

  551. an infinite penalty.

  552. That is a mathematical equation.

  553. Does that make sense

  554. to you?

  555. And only

  556. the infinite

  557. endurance

  558. of suffering

  559. in hell

  560. or the infinite

  561. blood of Christ

  562. will bring about

  563. satisfaction

  564. to the debt

  565. that sin creates.

  566. And here

  567. is the Scripture

  568. making it clear

  569. to us

  570. that Christ

  571. by his offering

  572. is going to satisfy

  573. the debt

  574. and look at verse 11

  575. and it says,

  576. and make many

  577. to be accounted righteousness.

  578. That word

  579. accounted

  580. means

  581. that his righteousness

  582. is put over

  583. on my account.

  584. why is it

  585. that I can say

  586. with absolute confidence

  587. that there is thou

  588. therefore

  589. no condemnation

  590. to them

  591. who are in Christ Jesus?

  592. It is because

  593. the righteousness

  594. of Christ

  595. was placed

  596. on the account

  597. of the sinner

  598. who is repentant

  599. and calls upon

  600. the name of the Lord.

  601. And so you look

  602. at this passage

  603. and you recognize here

  604. that Jesus

  605. is making it clear

  606. going back to

  607. the passage

  608. in John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  609. He is making a statement

  610. that listen

  611. I am going to die.

  612. They didn't expect that.

  613. They'd heard him

  614. say it many times

  615. but he made it

  616. very very clear

  617. that he was going

  618. to die

  619. and that as a result

  620. of his death

  621. those who came

  622. to faith

  623. would be the fruit

  624. of his sacrifice

  625. and be the fruit

  626. the outcome

  627. the product

  628. the blessing

  629. that came

  630. from his willing

  631. sacrifice.

  632. So let me ask you

  633. a practical question

  634. because the remainder

  635. of the sermon

  636. is not aimed

  637. at unbelievers

  638. but is aimed

  639. at you who are here

  640. who know Christ

  641. and I would say

  642. that the vast majority

  643. of you would say

  644. I know Jesus

  645. yeah

  646. I'm one of them.

  647. I want you to recognize

  648. that what Jesus

  649. is going to say next

  650. really puts us

  651. on the spot

  652. of asking ourselves

  653. the question

  654. am I the fruit

  655. of his sacrifice

  656. for sin?

  657. Ask yourself

  658. that question

  659. am I

  660. the fruit

  661. of his sacrifice

  662. for sin?

  663. Jesus

  664. had this statement

  665. made by his disciples

  666. these people want

  667. to come and meet you

  668. and talk with you

  669. Jesus said

  670. yep

  671. it's now time

  672. that I'm going

  673. to be glorified

  674. how?

  675. I'm going to die

  676. my death

  677. is going to produce fruit

  678. are you the fruit

  679. of his sacrifice

  680. for sin?

  681. That brings us

  682. to the third thing

  683. that I want you

  684. to recognize

  685. it starts out there

  686. in verse 20

  687. where the Greeks

  688. came and said

  689. alright we want

  690. to see Jesus

  691. now here we are

  692. looking at verse 25

  693. and 26

  694. whoever loves his life

  695. loses it

  696. whoever hates his life

  697. in this world

  698. will keep it

  699. for eternal life

  700. if anyone serves me

  701. are you in the anyone?

  702. are you that?

  703. if anyone serves me

  704. he must follow me

  705. and where I am

  706. there will my servant

  707. be also

  708. if anyone serves me

  709. the father

  710. will honor him

  711. here's the question

  712. am I one of the anyone?

  713. is that fair?

  714. am I an anyone?

  715. am I a person

  716. who really knows

  717. Christ?

  718. here were the Greeks

  719. they wanted to know

  720. more about Jesus

  721. they were interested

  722. in knowing

  723. this spectacular

  724. newsworthy

  725. individual

  726. and he says

  727. listen it's time

  728. I'm going to be glorified

  729. and my glory

  730. is going to be

  731. directly linked

  732. to my dying

  733. for other people

  734. what has taken

  735. place so far

  736. in this passage

  737. is Jesus

  738. bringing attention

  739. to the cross

  740. but let's take it further

  741. now what he says

  742. is

  743. the fruit

  744. of faith

  745. produces

  746. people

  747. who act

  748. like me

  749. do you get that?

  750. the last

  751. two verses

  752. are really

  753. for us

  754. as believers

  755. to kind of

  756. double check

  757. to see whether

  758. or not

  759. we are

  760. what we say

  761. we are

  762. the Greeks

  763. wanted to understand

  764. Jesus better

  765. and he wanted

  766. to be very clear

  767. that his disciples

  768. in particular

  769. understood

  770. what following him

  771. really meant

  772. knowing Jesus

  773. means following Jesus

  774. and bringing fruit

  775. to his glory

  776. you want to see him

  777. then follow his path

  778. take his

  779. life

  780. and walk

  781. with him

  782. be fruit

  783. that brings glory

  784. to him

  785. and be one

  786. who

  787. by virtue

  788. of the life

  789. that you live

  790. evidences

  791. the transforming

  792. power of the cross

  793. so what does

  794. true faith

  795. produce?

  796. what does

  797. true fruit

  798. look like?

  799. it would be wrong

  800. to skip over

  801. this passage

  802. and not have it

  803. brought to bear

  804. on our lives

  805. personally

  806. and I got to tell you

  807. I was listening

  808. earlier last week

  809. to John Piper

  810. preaching on this

  811. passage

  812. and remember

  813. I said that this

  814. passage is a great

  815. one but it's also

  816. deeply

  817. convicting

  818. true faith

  819. is hard

  820. let's get that

  821. clear in our minds

  822. it would be wrong

  823. not to declare

  824. the truth

  825. that Jesus

  826. had here for us

  827. that following

  828. him is costly

  829. and hard

  830. I

  831. every now and then

  832. just to kind of

  833. intrigue and

  834. entertain my soul

  835. I kind of

  836. skip through

  837. channels that have

  838. a lot of

  839. televangelists on them

  840. you know

  841. wonderful preaching

  842. about how I can

  843. have a better house

  844. and fly in a jet

  845. and you know

  846. all that kind of stuff

  847. you know it's a

  848. really popular stuff

  849. and do you realize

  850. that the health

  851. and wealth gospel

  852. is thriving today

  853. around the world

  854. and you know what

  855. when you listen to

  856. these guys preach

  857. you kind of wonder

  858. what in the world

  859. was Jesus talking

  860. about

  861. about sacrifice

  862. where's the truly

  863. truly in all of that

  864. listen to what

  865. Jesus had to say

  866. about what it means

  867. to follow him

  868. for one we choose

  869. death

  870. look at the passage

  871. whoever loves his

  872. life loses it

  873. what

  874. I'd like to

  875. follow Jesus

  876. if it means I get

  877. something for

  878. that in return

  879. hey

  880. that's not wrong

  881. thinking

  882. you're thinking

  883. I'm

  884. wrong

  885. wait

  886. God does not

  887. call us

  888. to sacrifice

  889. without promise

  890. of reward

  891. the problem

  892. is

  893. is we end up

  894. being far

  895. too short

  896. sighted

  897. I'll never

  898. forget

  899. reading

  900. in Desiring God

  901. about

  902. a missionary

  903. couple

  904. that arrived

  905. from years

  906. on the field

  907. broken and

  908. spent by

  909. their ministry

  910. I think it was

  911. in Africa

  912. and they

  913. happened to be

  914. arrived

  915. they happened

  916. to be arriving

  917. at the same

  918. time that

  919. some significant

  920. dignitary was

  921. arriving

  922. and the band

  923. was there

  924. to welcome

  925. this individual

  926. as he got

  927. off the

  928. steamship

  929. and as he

  930. is walking

  931. off the band

  932. strikes up

  933. and they're

  934. giving all

  935. this fanfare

  936. and the wife

  937. commented to the

  938. husband

  939. there's nobody

  940. here to greet

  941. us

  942. and he said

  943. I'm not home

  944. yet

  945. we're not home

  946. yet

  947. let's be

  948. honest

  949. serving

  950. Jesus

  951. is hard

  952. you choose

  953. death

  954. there is

  955. truth in

  956. the fact

  957. that

  958. salvation

  959. is a

  960. death

  961. of our

  962. past

  963. and our

  964. corruption

  965. but it

  966. is also

  967. a conscious

  968. choice

  969. that we

  970. make

  971. from day

  972. to day

  973. of putting

  974. our old

  975. desires

  976. and habits

  977. to death

  978. and can I

  979. tell you

  980. that keeps

  981. on going

  982. on

  983. for the

  984. rest of

  985. my life

  986. I continue

  987. because of

  988. what Jesus

  989. has done

  990. in my life

  991. of choosing

  992. to not

  993. do things

  994. and put

  995. to death

  996. the flesh

  997. that is

  998. at battle

  999. and at war

  1000. with my

  1001. own heart

  1002. for things

  1003. that don't

  1004. last forever

  1005. as Judith

  1006. and I

  1007. were praying

  1008. this morning

  1009. and spending

  1010. time together

  1011. I talked

  1012. about the

  1013. fact that

  1014. that we

  1015. look forward

  1016. to a time

  1017. when we can

  1018. be invested

  1019. again with

  1020. ministering to

  1021. international students

  1022. I love going

  1023. out to the airport

  1024. and picking

  1025. them up

  1026. people who

  1027. hardly know

  1028. a thread

  1029. of English

  1030. and begin

  1031. to minister

  1032. to them

  1033. why

  1034. highly expensive

  1035. costly

  1036. proposition

  1037. but one

  1038. that has

  1039. gospel import

  1040. and impact

  1041. and when

  1042. we choose

  1043. to follow

  1044. Christ

  1045. we choose

  1046. to die

  1047. there's another

  1048. statement that

  1049. Jesus makes

  1050. he says

  1051. we choose

  1052. to hate

  1053. this life

  1054. in this

  1055. present age

  1056. there is a

  1057. seduction

  1058. in the world

  1059. around us

  1060. hey we all

  1061. entertain it

  1062. don't we

  1063. it used

  1064. to be

  1065. it used

  1066. to be

  1067. when we

  1068. wanted to

  1069. indulge

  1070. our fancies

  1071. and we

  1072. wanted to

  1073. become

  1074. better

  1075. consumers

  1076. we had

  1077. to rely

  1078. on catalogs

  1079. remember

  1080. those

  1081. old days

  1082. I mean

  1083. Sears

  1084. and Robux

  1085. catalogs

  1086. how many

  1087. of you

  1088. lived with

  1089. fantasies

  1090. of what

  1091. you could

  1092. buy

  1093. from

  1094. this is

  1095. a

  1096. previous

  1097. generation

  1098. most of

  1099. you

  1100. don't even

  1101. remember

  1102. those days

  1103. now

  1104. when you

  1105. go on

  1106. Facebook

  1107. when you

  1108. go on

  1109. the internet

  1110. when you

  1111. go to

  1112. CNN

  1113. when you

  1114. go to

  1115. Fox

  1116. News

  1117. over in

  1118. the margin

  1119. guess what

  1120. there is

  1121. there's

  1122. advertisement

  1123. and just

  1124. try this

  1125. just click

  1126. on one

  1127. single item

  1128. on Amazon

  1129. and express

  1130. an interest

  1131. and you

  1132. begin getting

  1133. emails out

  1134. of the

  1135. ether

  1136. and it's

  1137. like hey

  1138. we saw

  1139. that you

  1140. were interested

  1141. in that

  1142. sweeper

  1143. and we

  1144. want you

  1145. to know

  1146. that it

  1147. is the

  1148. very best

  1149. sweeper

  1150. that anyone

  1151. in the

  1152. world

  1153. can possibly

  1154. have

  1155. and if

  1156. you just

  1157. click here

  1158. you can

  1159. buy it

  1160. with

  1161. PayPal

  1162. you know

  1163. how it

  1164. is

  1165. here's

  1166. what you

  1167. do

  1168. you

  1169. choose

  1170. to put

  1171. that

  1172. life

  1173. to

  1174. death

  1175. you

  1176. choose

  1177. to

  1178. follow

  1179. Jesus

  1180. in

  1181. the

  1182. cross

  1183. look at

  1184. what he

  1185. says

  1186. here

  1187. in the

  1188. passage

  1189. he

  1190. says

  1191. if

  1192. anyone

  1193. serves

  1194. me

  1195. he

  1196. must

  1197. follow

  1198. me

  1199. he

  1200. must

  1201. follow

  1202. me

  1203. we

  1204. are

  1205. far

  1206. too

  1207. focused

  1208. in

  1209. indulging

  1210. ourselves

  1211. in

  1212. our

  1213. own

  1214. fantasies

  1215. to

  1216. the

  1217. pleasure

  1218. of our

  1219. private

  1220. individual

  1221. interests

  1222. and

  1223. we're

  1224. not

  1225. about

  1226. the

  1227. cross

  1228. there's

  1229. one more

  1230. thing

  1231. we choose

  1232. to serve

  1233. look at

  1234. the

  1235. passage

  1236. if

  1237. anyone

  1238. serves

  1239. me

  1240. and by

  1241. the way

  1242. I'll

  1243. take a

  1244. cheap

  1245. shot

  1246. here

  1247. next

  1248. week

  1249. pastor

  1250. shearer

  1251. begins

  1252. to

  1253. preach

  1254. for

  1255. four

  1256. weeks

  1257. there's

  1258. no

  1259. cheap

  1260. shot

  1261. in

  1262. that

  1263. part

  1264. but

  1265. I

  1266. am

  1267. going

  1268. to

  1269. be

  1270. responsible

  1271. for

  1272. taking

  1273. care

  1274. of

  1275. the

  1276. nursery

  1277. and

  1278. I

  1279. am

  1280. going

  1281. to

  1282. invite

  1283. all

  1284. of

  1285. you

  1286. to

  1287. serve

  1288. in

  1289. the

  1290. nursery

  1291. you

  1292. hear

  1293. me

  1294. there

  1295. will

  1296. be

  1297. some

  1298. personal

  1299. invitations

  1300. some

  1301. of

  1302. you

  1303. have

  1304. been

  1305. on

  1306. the

  1307. periphery

  1308. you

  1309. know

  1310. what

  1311. periphery

  1312. means

  1313. it

  1314. means

  1315. way

  1316. outside

  1317. I'm

  1318. going

  1319. to

  1320. put

  1321. my

  1322. arms

  1323. around

  1324. you

  1325. guys

  1326. I'm

  1327. going

  1328. to

  1329. speak

  1330. politely

  1331. to

  1332. you

  1333. women

  1334. and

  1335. I'm

  1336. going

  1337. to

  1338. say

  1339. hey

  1340. over

  1341. there

  1342. every

  1343. now

  1344. and

  1345. then

  1346. there

  1347. are

  1348. some

  1349. of

  1350. you

  1351. haven't

  1352. been

  1353. in

  1354. a

  1355. nursery

  1356. ever

  1357. since

  1358. your

  1359. kids

  1360. left

  1361. you

  1362. know

  1363. it's

  1364. like

  1365. I'm

  1366. not

  1367. doing

  1368. that

  1369. yes

  1370. you

  1371. are

  1372. at

  1373. least

  1374. I'll

  1375. invite

  1376. you

  1377. pastor

  1378. Saul

  1379. is

  1380. smiling

  1381. and

  1382. grinning

  1383. because

  1384. he

  1385. had

  1386. that

  1387. responsibility

  1388. previously

  1389. right

  1390. oh

  1391. okay

  1392. we're

  1393. going

  1394. to

  1395. choose

  1396. to

  1397. serve

  1398. I

  1399. want

  1400. you

  1401. to

  1402. see

  1403. some

  1404. other

  1405. thing

  1406. not

  1407. only

  1408. is

  1409. true

  1410. faith

  1411. hard

  1412. but

  1413. true

  1414. faith

  1415. is

  1416. glorious

  1417. we

  1418. live

  1419. fruitful

  1420. lives

  1421. whoever

  1422. hates

  1423. his

  1424. life

  1425. in

  1426. this

  1427. world

  1428. will

  1429. keep

  1430. it

  1431. for

  1432. eternal

  1433. life

  1434. we

  1435. live

  1436. fruitful

  1437. lives

  1438. can

  1439. I

  1440. tell

  1441. you

  1442. that

  1443. the

  1444. believer

  1445. lives

  1446. with

  1447. an

  1448. ambition

  1449. and

  1450. expectation

  1451. of

  1452. what

  1453. is

  1454. coming

  1455. ahead

  1456. is

  1457. that

  1458. the

  1459. way

  1460. you're

  1461. living

  1462. are

  1463. you

  1464. living

  1465. with

  1466. such

  1467. an

  1468. expectation

  1469. that

  1470. your

  1471. children

  1472. even

  1473. now

  1474. are

  1475. despairing

  1476. of

  1477. how

  1478. many

  1479. dumpsters

  1480. get rid

  1481. of

  1482. the

  1483. trash

  1484. you

  1485. collected

  1486. no

  1487. we're

  1488. living

  1489. with

  1490. an

  1491. ambition

  1492. for

  1493. eternity

  1494. we

  1495. keep

  1496. our

  1497. lives

  1498. in

  1499. eternity

  1500. I

  1501. want

  1502. you

  1503. to

  1504. notice

  1505. something

  1506. else

  1507. there

  1508. in

  1509. the

  1510. passage

  1511. it

  1512. says

  1513. those

  1514. who

  1515. follow

  1516. Jesus

  1517. join

  1518. him

  1519. in

  1520. glory

  1521. where

  1522. I

  1523. am

  1524. there

  1525. will

  1526. my

  1527. servant

  1528. be

  1529. also

  1530. how

  1531. much

  1532. do

  1533. you

  1534. think

  1535. about

  1536. the

  1537. day

  1538. that

  1539. you

  1540. are

  1541. going

  1542. to

  1543. be

  1544. with

  1545. !

  1546. Christ

  1547. in

  1548. glory

  1549. you

  1550. know

  1551. I

  1552. was

  1553. talking

  1554. with

  1555. a

  1556. believer

  1557. earlier

  1558. in

  1559. the

  1560. week

  1561. last

  1562. week

  1563. and

  1564. he

  1565. was

  1566. commenting

  1567. about

  1568. how

  1569. much

  1570. he

  1571. looked

  1572. forward

  1573. to

  1574. heaven

  1575. truth

  1576. of

  1577. matter

  1578. is

  1579. he

  1580. had

  1581. 17

  1582. surgeries

  1583. and

  1584. as

  1585. we

  1586. were

  1587. having

  1588. conversation

  1589. about

  1590. life

  1591. he

  1592. brought

  1593. up

  1594. how

  1595. much

  1596. he

  1597. was

  1598. looking

  1599. forward

  1600. to

  1601. his

  1602. new

  1603. body

  1604. I

  1605. think

  1606. 17

  1607. surgeries

  1608. is

  1609. fairly

  1610. significant

  1611. and

  1612. I

  1613. said

  1614. to

  1615. him

  1616. you

  1617. know

  1618. what

  1619. it's

  1620. an

  1621. indication

  1622. of

  1623. our

  1624. own

  1625. frailty

  1626. that

  1627. the

  1628. thing

  1629. we

  1630. sometimes

  1631. think

  1632. about

  1633. is

  1634. so

  1635. superficial

  1636. the

  1637. pleasure

  1638. of

  1639. heaven

  1640. will

  1641. not

  1642. primarily

  1643. be

  1644. a

  1645. new

  1646. body

  1647. and

  1648. I

  1649. can

  1650. say

  1651. that

  1652. as

  1653. a

  1654. 68

  1655. year

  1656. old

  1657. the

  1658. pleasure

  1659. of

  1660. heaven

  1661. will

  1662. be

  1663. seeing

  1664. Jesus

  1665. where

  1666. I

  1667. am

  1668. there

  1669. will

  1670. my

  1671. servant

  1672. be

  1673. finally

  1674. look

  1675. at what

  1676. it says

  1677. at the

  1678. last

  1679. part

  1680. the

  1681. father

  1682. will

  1683. honor

  1684. him

  1685. psychologists

  1686. came up

  1687. with a

  1688. very

  1689. interesting

  1690. test

  1691. to

  1692. determine

  1693. the

  1694. probability

  1695. of a

  1696. child

  1697. succeeding

  1698. in

  1699. life

  1700. do

  1701. know

  1702. what

  1703. the

  1704. test

  1705. is

  1706. it's

  1707. a

  1708. marshmallow

  1709. test

  1710. simple

  1711. you

  1712. put a

  1713. kid

  1714. in a

  1715. room

  1716. set

  1717. him

  1718. at

  1719. a

  1720. table

  1721. and

  1722. put

  1723. one

  1724. marshmallow

  1725. on

  1726. the

  1727. table

  1728. and

  1729. you

  1730. say

  1731. to

  1732. the

  1733. kid

  1734. hey

  1735. you

  1736. can

  1737. eat

  1738. this

  1739. marshmallow

  1740. now

  1741. if

  1742. you

  1743. wait

  1744. I'll

  1745. reward

  1746. you

  1747. the

  1748. kid

  1749. who

  1750. has

  1751. an

  1752. inability

  1753. to

  1754. think

  1755. beyond

  1756. the

  1757. moment

  1758. grabs

  1759. and

  1760. gobbles

  1761. the

  1762. marshmallow

  1763. at

  1764. the

  1765. moment

  1766. the

  1767. kid

  1768. who

  1769. waits

  1770. indicates

  1771. by that

  1772. perspective

  1773. a level

  1774. of

  1775. understanding

  1776. about

  1777. what

  1778. may

  1779. lie

  1780. ahead

  1781. there

  1782. are

  1783. some

  1784. of you

  1785. here

  1786. this

  1787. morning

  1788. that

  1789. profess

  1790. to

  1791. know

  1792. Christ

  1793. but

  1794. you're

  1795. one

  1796. marshmallow

  1797. Christians

  1798. it's

  1799. all

  1800. about

  1801. now

  1802. it's

  1803. all

  1804. about

  1805. what

  1806. you

  1807. have

  1808. your

  1809. investments

  1810. will

  1811. not

  1812. travel

  1813. with

  1814. you

  1815. your

  1816. hobbies

  1817. will

  1818. not

  1819. travel

  1820. with

  1821. you

  1822. your

  1823. trophies

  1824. will

  1825. not

  1826. travel

  1827. with

  1828. you

  1829. I

  1830. remember

  1831. burying

  1832. being

  1833. at the

  1834. funeral

  1835. for

  1836. Bill

  1837. Brock

  1838. who

  1839. was

  1840. the

  1841. founder

  1842. of

  1843. this

  1844. church

  1845. and

  1846. as

  1847. I

  1848. was

  1849. there

  1850. at

  1851. the

  1852. graveside

  1853. with

  1854. the

  1855. family

  1856. I

  1857. just

  1858. looked

  1859. over

  1860. there

  1861. to

  1862. the

  1863. side

  1864. and

  1865. there

  1866. was

  1867. John

  1868. Kenneth

  1869. Galbraith

  1870. headstone

  1871. do

  1872. anybody

  1873. know

  1874. who

  1875. Galbraith

  1876. is

  1877. probably

  1878. this

  1879. current

  1880. generation

  1881. he

  1882. was

  1883. a

  1884. heavy

  1885. lifter

  1886. along

  1887. the

  1888. lines

  1889. of

  1890. Bill

  1891. Gates

  1892. etc

  1893. an

  1894. incredibly

  1895. rich

  1896. man

  1897. buried

  1898. in a

  1899. plot

  1900. no

  1901. bigger

  1902. than

  1903. Bill

  1904. had

  1905. and

  1906. has

  1907. I

  1908. know

  1909. Bill's

  1910. in

  1911. heaven

  1912. and

  1913. beloved

  1914. as

  1915. you

  1916. look

  1917. at

  1918. this

  1919. passage

  1920. here's

  1921. the

  1922. thing

  1923. that

  1924. should

  1925. be

  1926. undeniably

  1927. clear

  1928. to

  1929. us

  1930. those

  1931. who

  1932. know

  1933. Christ

  1934. are

  1935. invested

  1936. in

  1937. the

  1938. future

  1939. those

  1940. who

  1941. know

  1942. Christ

  1943. have

  1944. ambition

  1945. for

  1946. what

  1947. lies

  1948. ahead

  1949. do

  1950. you

  1951. see

  1952. in

  1953. your

  1954. life

  1955. the

  1956. clear

  1957. indicators

  1958. of

  1959. a

  1960. willingness

  1961. to

  1962. put

  1963. away

  1964. and

  1965. put

  1966. to

  1967. death

  1968. things

  1969. that

  1970. encumber

  1971. your

  1972. present

  1973. life

  1974. and

  1975. service

  1976. or

  1977. are

  1978. you

  1979. so

  1980. occupied

  1981. with

  1982. the

  1983. moment

  1984. that

  1985. it's

  1986. fair

  1987. to

  1988. say

  1989. you

  1990. should

  1991. probably

  1992. be

  1993. asking

  1994. yourself

  1995. the

  1996. question

  1997. do

  1998. I

  1999. really

  2000. know

  2001. Christ

  2002. because

  2003. here's

  2004. the

  2005. characteristic

  2006. Jesus

  2007. said it

  2008. very

  2009. clearly

  2010. whoever

  2011. loves

  2012. his

  2013. life

  2014. loses

  2015. it

  2016. if

  2017. anyone

  2018. serves

  2019. me

  2020. he

  2021. must

  2022. follow

  2023. me

  2024. let's

  2025. close

  2026. in

  2027. prayer

  2028. our

  2029. father

  2030. God

  2031. this

  2032. morning

  2033. as

  2034. we

  2035. have

  2036. attended

  2037. to

  2038. the

  2039. word

  2040. I

  2041. recognize

  2042. that

  2043. it

  2044. is

  2045. primarily

  2046. for

  2047. the

  2048. believer

  2049. that

  2050. is

  2051. here

  2052. today

  2053. to

  2054. challenge

  2055. them

  2056. to

  2057. think

  2058. consciously

  2059. and

  2060. deliberately

  2061. does

  2062. my

  2063. life

  2064. produce

  2065. the

  2066. fruit

  2067. of

  2068. faith

  2069. can

  2070. I

  2071. see

  2072. that

  2073. Christ

  2074. has

  2075. made

  2076. a

  2077. difference

  2078. in

  2079. my

  2080. ambitions

  2081. and

  2082. my

  2083. affections

  2084. in

  2085. the

  2086. things

  2087. that

  2088. I

  2089. talk

  2090. about

  2091. in

  2092. the

  2093. interest

  2094. that

  2095. I

  2096. have

  2097. in

  2098. my

  2099. willingness

  2100. to

  2101. serve

  2102. there

  2103. may

  2104. be

  2105. some

  2106. today

  2107. that

  2108. are

  2109. here

  2110. that

  2111. recognize

  2112. when

  2113. they

  2114. compare

  2115. their

  2116. heart

  2117. against

  2118. the

  2119. model

  2120. of

  2121. scripture

  2122. there

  2123. may

  2124. be

  2125. some

  2126. that

  2127. say

  2128. I

  2129. have

  2130. drifted

  2131. away

  2132. from

  2133. my

  2134. first

  2135. love

  2136. and

  2137. this

  2138. morning

  2139. the

  2140. spirit

  2141. of

  2142. God

  2143. is

  2144. convicting

  2145. me

  2146. that

  2147. needs

  2148. to

  2149. be

  2150. restored

  2151. there

  2152. may

  2153. be

  2154. some

  2155. here

  2156. that

  2157. do

  2158. not

  2159. know

  2160. Christ

  2161. that

  2162. they

  2163. have

  2164. not

  2165. yet

  2166. come

  2167. to

  2168. faith

  2169. and

  2170. this

  2171. morning

  2172. it

  2173. would

  2174. be

  2175. our

  2176. plea

  2177. that

  2178. your

  2179. spirit

  2180. would

  2181. draw

  2182. them

  2183. to

  2184. the

  2185. cross

  2186. and

  2187. see

  2188. !

  2189. the

  2190. emptiness

  2191. and

  2192. darkness

  2193. of

  2194. their

  2195. soul

  2196. has

  2197. no

  2198. remedy

  2199. apart

  2200. from

  2201. Jesus

  2202. we

  2203. ask

  2204. this

  2205. in

  2206. Jesus

  2207. name

  2208. Amen
