  1. And this morning as we look at fellowship and as we think about small groups and really the purpose for why we have a small group ministry and the purpose of fellowship and what does fellowship do for us as a people?

  2. I want to begin to answer the question for us this morning. The question is, what's the big deal about fellowship? I mean, who cares about fellowship anyway? Why is it really important?

  3. And so this morning, that's the question I want to try to answer is, what is the big deal about fellowship?

  4. One writer has put it this way. He says, when we depend upon organizations, we get what organizations can do.

  5. When we depend upon education, we get what education can do.

  6. When we depend upon man, we get what man can do.

  7. But when we depend upon prayer, we get what God can do.

  8. I think a correlation can be made to fellowship.

  9. When we depend upon superficiality, we get what superficiality brings.

  10. But when we nurture and develop the kind of strategy for biblical fellowship that God desires for His people, we'll get what God has designed fellowship to nurture.

  11. We'll get what God has designed fellowship to accomplish.

  12. And this morning, as we look into the Word, I want to help us get just a new look at what fellowship does.

  13. And I want us to see that fellowship isn't just another tangential program or tangential ministry of the church.

  14. That fellowship is something that we do because it is the heart and soul of who we are as a church.

  15. It is the heart and soul of who God has made us to be.

  16. And anything good that will happen as a result of the ministry here, we'll find as a basis, we'll find as a starting point, true biblical fellowship.

  17. Now, certainly we understand that fellowship has to begin with a relationship with God.

  18. The Apostle John, we've been looking through the gospel of John, but John, in one of his letters to the church of Ephesus, writes this in 1 John 1.

  19. He says,

  20. That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and have touched with our hands concerning the word of life.

  21. And we all know that he's talking about Jesus there.

  22. What does that relationship with Jesus do?

  23. He says,

  24. That which we have seen and heard we have proclaimed to you.

  25. So that you may have fellowship with us.

  26. And indeed, our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

  27. God has placed us into relationship.

  28. The initial and primary supreme relationship that we enjoy is a relationship with God.

  29. And because of that common relationship that those who are in Christ can experience, it means that we can have relationship with one another.

  30. It means we must have relationship with each other because of the primary relationship we have with God the Father.

  31. What does that relationship look like?

  32. How did that relationship begin?

  33. Many of you may be able to recount just the beginnings of that spiritual legacy that God created in your life.

  34. Now, we can chart our own family ancestry, but we can also begin to chart a little bit of our spiritual legacy.

  35. What is that spiritual family tree that God has given to us?

  36. And how did that all come about?

  37. I had a chance in Sunday school class just to hear some testimonies of people who came to faith in Christ.

  38. It was remarkable to hear and refreshing for me to hear how God has worked in specific lives of individuals to bring them to Christ.

  39. What is your own experience?

  40. My guess is that as we were to take an inventory here in our own fellowship, we would find a diversity of experiences and how God brought us to saving faith in Him.

  41. Maybe through a parent or a grandparent.

  42. Maybe through a Sunday school teacher who was instrumental in your life.

  43. Maybe through an Awana leader.

  44. Or maybe a neighbor who was living down the street.

  45. Or maybe a sermon that you heard one Sunday morning.

  46. Or an evangelist that came to your house.

  47. Maybe it was something that you read.

  48. An article.

  49. Or something online.

  50. Perhaps it was a sermon or a lesson you heard even over the internet.

  51. Or something you watched on the TV.

  52. But through the mouthpiece of individuals or through the pen of a person,

  53. God brought the word to you.

  54. Paul says in Romans chapter 10, he says,

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  55. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

  56. God has chosen through the instrumentation of individuals for us to hear the message of the gospel.

  57. And as we begin to understand and appreciate how God brought us to saving faith,

  58. we understand that God used an individual, we'll call them maybe a spiritual mom or dad,

  59. to help lead you into a saving relationship with Jesus.

  60. A fellowship that you may have had with them was in your introduction of fellowship with God the Father.

  61. A fellowship that was nurtured through other individuals,

  62. through a church setting, through a small group, through a Bible study,

  63. maybe even through some people in a workplace.

  64. But God used relationships in your life not only to initiate the gospel,

  65. initiate a relationship with him,

  66. but also to advance his objective in your life in helping you to grow spiritually,

  67. in helping you to have a spiritual life.

  68. One person has said that the depth of our personal relationship with God

  69. determines the degree of fellowship possible with each other.

  70. Fellowship is important.

  71. And this morning I want to answer this question,

  72. what is the big deal about fellowship?

  73. fellowship.

  74. Now maybe you're looking at your notes this morning and you see four pages

  75. and you're wondering in the next 30 minutes

  76. how in the world we're going to get through all of this material.

  77. And I just want to rest assured that my intention of putting it here

  78. is not that we're going to cover it all,

  79. it's that you can take it home and I don't have to talk about it, okay?

  80. So my desire is not only to initiate this process of understanding,

  81. but give you the resources that you need to be able to take this home,

  82. to be able to look at the scriptures,

  83. and to be encouraged throughout the week

  84. in what God has said from his word about this very important subject,

  85. the subject about fellowship.

  86. Now as God has used individuals in your life to lead you to the gospel,

  87. God has done the same for the individuals who were your spiritual mom or dad.

  88. And on and on and on through history,

  89. various situations and circumstances and interactions with individuals

  90. will eventually lead us back to where it all began.

  91. Back to what we're going to look at this morning.

  92. This Christian movement,

  93. the new church era that began in Acts chapter 1 and 2,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  94. where the gospel rocketed out of Jerusalem

  95. and affected Judea and Samaria

  96. and the uttermost parts of the world.

  97. It all began with this small band of 11 men

  98. that we call disciples.

  99. And this small group of individuals,

  100. 120 people who in chapter 1 of Acts

  101. are praying together and encouraging one another.

  102. And the power of God falls on that group of individuals.

  103. And there is electricity in the air,

  104. and there is conversion,

  105. and there is the work of the Spirit

  106. in working in the hearts of individuals

  107. to lead them to faith in Jesus Christ.

  108. Our spiritual legacy can be traced back

  109. to that movement of individuals

  110. that God used instrumentally

  111. to propel the gospel out of Jerusalem

  112. into the uttermost parts of the earth.

  113. But in order to understand how that all began,

  114. in order for us to recognize

  115. the significance of fellowship,

  116. and how does that play into our discussion today,

  117. I want to encourage us to open our Bibles

  118. to Mark chapter 3.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  119. We're going to look at how this fellowship,

  120. discipleship movement began.

  121. We're going to see how things broke loose in Jerusalem,

  122. and then how eventually it erupted in Antioch

  123. some 15 to 20 years later.

  124. And how has each subsequent generation

  125. benefited from the strategy that Jesus laid down

  126. early on in his ministry with the disciples,

  127. disciples,

  128. and then was picked up and carried along,

  129. and to this point,

  130. we still participate in the benefits

  131. of this strategy that we're going to look at this morning.

  132. Now, as you can tell,

  133. this is just going to be a flyby.

  134. Okay?

  135. My desire this morning is not to dig in and to dig deep.

  136. We don't have time for that,

  137. but I just want to provide some exposure.

  138. I want to give us an opportunity

  139. to look into the Scripture

  140. to see three key aspects of fellowship

  141. from Mark chapter 3,

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  142. and then the continuing legacy

  143. that fellowship brings through the Gospel of Acts,

  144. and we're going to have to hit it rapid fire,

  145. but I'm sure you can stick along with us,

  146. and I hope this will be a blessing to you.

  147. So, what is the big deal about fellowship?

  148. Well, first of all, from Mark chapter 3,

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  149. 13 to 15,

  150. fellowship is the starting point of discipleship.

  151. Fellowship is the starting point for discipleship.

  152. Let me read these verses for us,

  153. and then we'll dig in a little bit.

  154. It says,

  155. And he went up, of course,

  156. that's speaking of Jesus,

  157. on the mountain,

  158. and called to him those whom he desired.

  159. And they came to him,

  160. and he appointed twelve,

  161. whom he also named apostles,

  162. so that they might be with him,

  163. and he might send them out to preach,

  164. and to have authority to cast out demons.

  165. Now, if I were to ask you the question,

  166. why did Jesus call the apostles?

  167. What was the main objective?

  168. How would we tend to answer that question?

  169. Well, if you're anything like me,

  170. your answer would be,

  171. well, Jesus called the apostles to himself,

  172. so they could make disciples of the world.

  173. And certainly, that is true.

  174. But we have to back up a little bit,

  175. and we have to see

  176. that the starting point of discipleship

  177. is something else.

  178. What do you see there in verse 14?

  179. How does it all begin?

  180. What is the first strategy of Jesus

  181. from this text?

  182. What does it say?

  183. That they might do what?

  184. Be with him.

  185. Have you ever seen that before?

  186. This was brought to my attention

  187. a couple of years ago,

  188. and I'm like,

  189. how did I miss that?

  190. How did I miss something

  191. as important as that?

  192. Discipleship must begin

  193. in fellowshipping relationships.

  194. Discipleship begins

  195. as we are involved in community.

  196. Fellowship begins

  197. as we are coming to understand

  198. and to know

  199. and to love Jesus Christ.

  200. Fellowship begins

  201. as that relationship with him

  202. is nurtured and developed in us

  203. so that then we can move

  204. outward

  205. and reach the world.

  206. Now, believe it or not,

  207. here in Mark chapter 3,

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  208. a lot has taken place already

  209. in the ministry of Jesus.

  210. He's already been baptized.

  211. He's already gone into the wilderness

  212. and been tempted.

  213. The initial call to Peter

  214. and Andrew

  215. and James and John

  216. have already happened,

  217. and they've been following him

  218. for months.

  219. There's been an initial call

  220. to Matthew

  221. and an initial call

  222. to Nathaniel

  223. and to Philip,

  224. so many of his disciples

  225. had already been following him.

  226. And up to this point,

  227. there was this massive crowd

  228. that was following Jesus

  229. wherever he went.

  230. Not to mention the fact

  231. there was already

  232. significant opposition

  233. in Jesus' ministry.

  234. The scribes

  235. and the Pharisees

  236. all the way down

  237. in Jerusalem,

  238. all the way up

  239. to the highest regions

  240. of Galilee,

  241. were beginning to congregate

  242. and to evaluate

  243. the ministry of Jesus.

  244. What will he say next?

  245. Who is this teacher

  246. and preacher

  247. who has taken Galilee

  248. by storm?

  249. Some commentators

  250. have suggested

  251. that Jesus may have actually

  252. already finished

  253. his first year of ministry

  254. before this event

  255. actually took place.

  256. And not that the disciples

  257. weren't already following him

  258. and already engaged

  259. in the ministry,

  260. but now was a time

  261. for something definitive

  262. to happen.

  263. Now was a time

  264. for Jesus

  265. to set apart

  266. a group of individuals

  267. who would be selected

  268. to do something important,

  269. something significant.

  270. Christ initiates

  271. this discipleship movement

  272. through the means

  273. of fellowship.

  274. Jesus is interested

  275. in setting apart

  276. this group of individuals

  277. to have exclusive access

  278. to have exclusive access

  279. to him,

  280. to have exclusive privilege

  281. and power,

  282. to have exclusive mission

  283. of being the mouthpiece

  284. of Christ

  285. in the word of God

  286. and helping to lay

  287. the foundation

  288. for the church.

  289. But it would happen

  290. through the context

  291. of this fellowship

  292. with Jesus.

  293. This strategy

  294. that Christ used

  295. would help to develop

  296. these men

  297. to carry on

  298. this monumental vision

  299. that he had

  300. for reaching the world

  301. for himself.

  302. Interestingly,

  303. this was so important

  304. to Christ.

  305. We find from Luke's account

  306. that Jesus went

  307. to the mountain

  308. to pray

  309. and all night

  310. he continued

  311. in prayer

  312. to God.

  313. And then when day came

  314. he called his disciples

  315. and chose from them

  316. twelve

  317. whom he named apostles.

  318. Jesus was interested

  319. in making sure

  320. that the right men

  321. were selected

  322. for this fellowshipping

  323. relationship with him

  324. so they could

  325. then be turned loose

  326. to accomplish

  327. the objectives

  328. that he had

  329. for the world.

  330. We call this

  331. discipling process,

  332. we refer to this

  333. as partnership.

  334. The disciples

  335. were in true

  336. community

  337. with Jesus.

  338. They were in

  339. relationship

  340. with him.

  341. Last year

  342. when we had

  343. this startup

  344. for small groups

  345. Pastor Knoyer

  346. used this statement

  347. he says

  348. fellowship

  349. is essential

  350. for spiritual

  351. life

  352. and growth.

  353. Another commentator

  354. says that God

  355. has chosen fellowship

  356. to be the primary

  357. channel of life

  358. in his body.

  359. If we want

  360. big things

  361. to happen

  362. at Maranatha

  363. if we want

  364. big things

  365. to happen

  366. in Grove City

  367. in Hilliard

  368. in Columbus

  369. in whatever

  370. town

  371. God has

  372. placed you

  373. it will happen

  374. as you are

  375. grounding yourself

  376. in a community

  377. of individuals

  378. and fellowshipping

  379. with them.

  380. Now that raises

  381. another question.

  382. What is

  383. biblical

  384. fellowship?

  385. What does it

  386. mean?

  387. And the reason

  388. why we need

  389. to go there

  390. is because

  391. society

  392. and the world

  393. has hijacked

  394. this term.

  395. So it's important

  396. for us to

  397. understand

  398. what does

  399. the Bible

  400. mean when

  401. it talks

  402. about fellowship.

  403. When we hear

  404. the term

  405. fellowship

  406. we often

  407. think of

  408. food

  409. and fun.

  410. We think

  411. of activities.

  412. We think

  413. of things

  414. that stimulate

  415. conversation.

  416. We think

  417. of things

  418. that help

  419. to initiate

  420. some sort

  421. of interaction

  422. with one another

  423. and relationship.

  424. And we kind

  425. of hope

  426. that is

  427. we're together

  428. enough

  429. that fellowship

  430. will just

  431. happen.

  432. But fellowship

  433. in the scripture

  434. goes much

  435. deeper.

  436. Fellowship

  437. in the scripture

  438. involves things

  439. that go

  440. much,

  441. much deeper

  442. than just

  443. the superficial

  444. aspects of

  445. what we would

  446. call community

  447. or fun

  448. or relationship.

  449. When the Bible

  450. talks about fellowship

  451. it has something

  452. deeper in view.

  453. It has unity

  454. in view.

  455. It has

  456. partnership.

  457. in view.

  458. It has

  459. participation

  460. in one's

  461. lives

  462. in view.

  463. Commitment

  464. to one another.

  465. Accountability.

  466. Sharpening.

  467. Sharing.

  468. Edification.

  469. And there

  470. are 19 times

  471. throughout

  472. the New Testament

  473. where the Bible

  474. uses this word

  475. koinonia

  476. which is the word

  477. fellowship.

  478. And I've put

  479. them here

  480. in your

  481. insert

  482. for your

  483. own edification.

  484. But all 19

  485. verses are listed

  486. there and

  487. my

  488. this is not

  489. authoritative

  490. but just

  491. my shot

  492. at what

  493. each verse

  494. does and

  495. how to

  496. categorize

  497. what fellowship

  498. accomplishes.

  499. You'll see here

  500. that there are

  501. intimate relationships

  502. that happen

  503. among believers.

  504. You'll see that

  505. there are

  506. financial contributions

  507. that are

  508. taking place

  509. and caring

  510. for one another.

  511. You'll see that

  512. it describes

  513. the intimate

  514. relationship

  515. we have with God

  516. that partnering

  517. relationship

  518. union we have

  519. with the Godhead.

  520. And because of

  521. that partnership

  522. there must be

  523. purity and holiness

  524. and righteousness

  525. in our life.

  526. A testimony

  527. for Christ

  528. in our world.

  529. And then a

  530. joining together

  531. in ministry.

  532. It is our

  533. fellowship

  534. that leads

  535. to

  536. service.

  537. Fellowship

  538. isn't just

  539. about

  540. having good

  541. relationships

  542. with individuals.

  543. if fellowship

  544. ends there

  545. then fellowship

  546. that is taking

  547. place in your life

  548. is not

  549. biblical fellowship.

  550. Fellowship

  551. that just has

  552. community

  553. in view

  554. and interactions

  555. in view

  556. and conversations

  557. in view

  558. and sharing

  559. common interests

  560. in view

  561. is a delinquent

  562. form of fellowship.

  563. It is not

  564. as deep

  565. as God

  566. would have

  567. it to go.

  568. Not that it

  569. doesn't include

  570. those things

  571. but it's got

  572. to go deeper.

  573. There's got

  574. to be more.

  575. There is a goal

  576. in mind

  577. to fellowship

  578. and that takes

  579. us to our

  580. next point.

  581. Fellowship

  582. is a platform

  583. for service

  584. and sending.

  585. Fellowship

  586. is a platform

  587. for service

  588. and sending.

  589. Let me

  590. again read

  591. verse 14

  592. of chapter 3.

  593. Mark 3

  594. 14.

  595. Here's what it says.

  596. And he appointed

  597. the twelve

  598. so that they

  599. might be with him

  600. and he might

  601. send them

  602. out to preach.

  603. What is the goal

  604. of fellowship?

  605. Where does

  606. fellowship

  607. lead us?

  608. Where does it

  609. take us?

  610. How do we know

  611. that true

  612. biblical fellowship

  613. is happening?

  614. because it says

  615. that they might

  616. be with him

  617. and he might

  618. send them

  619. where?

  620. Out

  621. to preach.

  622. The focus

  623. of biblical

  624. fellowship

  625. is outward.

  626. It's others.

  627. the goal

  628. of biblical

  629. fellowship

  630. is outside

  631. of you.

  632. Now that is

  633. just counterintuitive

  634. wouldn't you think?

  635. That's just not

  636. what we think of

  637. when we think

  638. of fellowship.

  639. We think of

  640. strengthening

  641. the group.

  642. We think of

  643. nurturing one another

  644. and meeting needs

  645. and fixing

  646. problems

  647. and certainly

  648. that is part

  649. of what fellowship

  650. accomplishes.

  651. But fellowship

  652. is strengthening

  653. of self

  654. so there can be

  655. a going out

  656. and strengthening

  657. of others.

  658. There is this

  659. growing

  660. concentric

  661. circles

  662. of community

  663. that continues

  664. to draw more

  665. and more people

  666. into the mix

  667. as you are

  668. enjoying

  669. relationship

  670. with God

  671. and seeing

  672. the benefits

  673. of relationship

  674. with others

  675. that you will

  676. understand

  677. that everywhere

  678. God has placed

  679. you there will

  680. be a desire

  681. to draw more

  682. and more people

  683. into that community.

  684. Understanding

  685. that that community

  686. only happens

  687. through the context

  688. of the gospel.

  689. It only happens

  690. through relationship

  691. with Christ.

  692. And so in your

  693. workplace

  694. there is this

  695. enthusiasm

  696. and excitement

  697. for the fellowship

  698. that you have

  699. with God

  700. that seeks

  701. to draw others

  702. in and to

  703. include them

  704. in to the joy

  705. and the enthusiasm

  706. that you are

  707. experiencing

  708. for yourself.

  709. You see

  710. the purpose

  711. of strengthening

  712. life

  713. is for the purpose

  714. of strengthening

  715. others.

  716. Pouring into

  717. one's life

  718. leads to

  719. pouring out.

  720. Sowing

  721. leads to

  722. reaping.

  723. Receiving

  724. leads to

  725. giving.

  726. Building up

  727. leads to

  728. building out.

  729. And that's what

  730. fellowship does.

  731. Fellowship is

  732. intended not to

  733. have this community

  734. that is so

  735. introspective

  736. that it only

  737. considers the

  738. needs of one

  739. another.

  740. But it is

  741. the kind

  742. of community

  743. that looks

  744. for ways

  745. to share

  746. the joy

  747. to the people

  748. around you.

  749. So if that's

  750. not happening

  751. in your life

  752. then I would

  753. challenge you

  754. to think

  755. is biblical

  756. fellowship

  757. really taking

  758. place

  759. for you?

  760. After all

  761. they were

  762. called apostles.

  763. Apostles

  764. were sent

  765. ones

  766. we

  767. are sent

  768. to speak

  769. his words.

  770. We

  771. are sent

  772. to show

  773. his works.

  774. God

  775. shows up

  776. in our

  777. life

  778. through

  779. words

  780. and actions

  781. through

  782. fellowship

  783. in communities.

  784. And our

  785. union with

  786. Christ

  787. shapes

  788. our

  789. relationships

  790. with others.

  791. I like

  792. how John

  793. Piper

  794. puts it.

  795. He says

  796. you cannot

  797. commend

  798. what you

  799. do not

  800. cherish.

  801. I'll say

  802. that one

  803. more time.

  804. You cannot

  805. commend

  806. what you

  807. do not

  808. cherish.

  809. You're not

  810. going to

  811. talk about

  812. Jesus

  813. if he's

  814. not the

  815. sweetest

  816. thing

  817. that has

  818. ever

  819. happened

  820. in your

  821. life.

  822. But as

  823. he becomes

  824. supreme

  825. and ultimate

  826. for you

  827. as you

  828. begin to

  829. cherish

  830. him

  831. you cannot

  832. help

  833. but commend

  834. him to

  835. others.

  836. And that's

  837. what fellowship

  838. is intended

  839. to do.

  840. It's to

  841. nurture

  842. that loving

  843. relationship

  844. with God.

  845. Nurture

  846. the loving

  847. relationships

  848. we have

  849. with others

  850. so that we

  851. have something

  852. to talk

  853. about in

  854. our world.

  855. It will

  856. be attractive

  857. to those

  858. in our

  859. communities

  860. in our

  861. workplace

  862. wherever

  863. God may

  864. place us

  865. as they

  866. see the

  867. sweetness

  868. of Jesus

  869. and the

  870. sweetness

  871. of relationship

  872. that you're

  873. enjoying

  874. with God's

  875. people.

  876. people.

  877. So the

  878. focus of

  879. biblical

  880. fellowship

  881. is others

  882. then how

  883. is that

  884. expressed?

  885. How do

  886. we get to

  887. the business

  888. of showing

  889. that to

  890. other people?

  891. Well the

  892. expression

  893. this is the

  894. next point

  895. the expression

  896. of biblical

  897. fellowship

  898. is through

  899. one another

  900. commands.

  901. And I put

  902. them here

  903. in your

  904. notes as

  905. just kind

  906. of a

  907. sampling

  908. of all

  909. of the

  910. one another

  911. commands

  912. that God

  913. gives to

  914. us as

  915. a church.

  916. All those

  917. things that

  918. God tells

  919. us to do

  920. to express

  921. that

  922. fellowshipping

  923. relationship

  924. that we have

  925. with one

  926. another.

  927. There are

  928. some 60

  929. one another

  930. commands

  931. throughout the

  932. New Testament.

  933. Some are

  934. repeated but

  935. they show up

  936. in so many

  937. different ways.

  938. And like I

  939. said this is

  940. just a sampling

  941. of what you

  942. can expect.

  943. Things like

  944. loving one

  945. another,

  946. praying for

  947. one another,

  948. bearing one

  949. another's

  950. burdens,

  951. singing to

  952. one another,

  953. comforting one

  954. another,

  955. confessing your

  956. faults to

  957. one another,

  958. being kindly

  959. affectionate to

  960. one another,

  961. preferring one

  962. another,

  963. stirring one

  964. another up to

  965. love and good

  966. deeds.

  967. All of the

  968. things that we

  969. can only do

  970. when we are

  971. in community.

  972. You cannot

  973. obey God's

  974. commands unless

  975. you are with

  976. God's people.

  977. You cannot

  978. carry out

  979. the things that

  980. God has called

  981. you to do.

  982. You cannot

  983. grow in your

  984. Christian life

  985. unless you are

  986. expressing the

  987. wonder of these

  988. one another

  989. commands that

  990. God has set

  991. up, not only

  992. in giving but

  993. also in

  994. receiving the

  995. beauty of what

  996. fellowship is

  997. designed to do.

  998. The significance

  999. of fellowship in

  1000. terms of being a

  1001. platform for

  1002. service and for

  1003. sending.

  1004. So what is the

  1005. big deal about

  1006. fellowship?

  1007. discipleship?

  1008. Well, it's the

  1009. starting point for

  1010. discipleship.

  1011. It's the platform

  1012. for service and

  1013. sending.

  1014. And thirdly, it is

  1015. the channel of

  1016. divine strength.

  1017. The channel of

  1018. divine strength.

  1019. Notice again,

  1020. coming back to our

  1021. text in chapter 3

  1022. of Mark, it says,

  1023. He appointed the

  1024. twelve, whom He also

  1025. named apostles, so

  1026. they might be with

  1027. Him and He might

  1028. send them out to

  1029. preach and have

  1030. authority to cast

  1031. out demons.

  1032. This word for

  1033. authority is the

  1034. word, the Greek

  1035. word exousia.

  1036. It's the word for

  1037. jurisdiction or

  1038. control or authority

  1039. to rule.

  1040. It's the word for

  1041. supernatural power or

  1042. the right to judge.

  1043. It's the same word

  1044. that we find in

  1045. Matthew 28, 19 or

  1046. 18 through 20 where

  1047. Jesus says, all

  1048. authority in heaven

  1049. and on earth has

  1050. been given to me,

  1051. so go and make

  1052. disciples.

  1053. All authority has

  1054. been given to

  1055. Christ.

  1056. Christ has been

  1057. given to the

  1058. church and so the

  1059. church can enjoy

  1060. the power of God

  1061. because of Christ

  1062. and fellowshipping

  1063. with Him and

  1064. express that power

  1065. in this world.

  1066. There is divine

  1067. strength that comes

  1068. to the believer,

  1069. that comes to the

  1070. church because of

  1071. our position in

  1072. Christ Jesus.

  1073. He has authority

  1074. and because of

  1075. being in Christ,

  1076. we have authority

  1077. and power.

  1078. A few years ago

  1079. when I was working

  1080. through the letters

  1081. of Paul to the

  1082. churches, this

  1083. continued to just

  1084. come home to my

  1085. heart.

  1086. Listen to a sampling

  1087. of what Paul says

  1088. in Ephesians 1.

  1089. He says, I'm

  1090. praying for you

  1091. that you would

  1092. know the

  1093. immeasurable

  1094. greatness of

  1095. His power towards

  1096. us who believe.

  1097. Later on in

  1098. chapter 3, he

  1099. says, I'm

  1100. praying on my

  1101. knees to the

  1102. Father for you

  1103. that you would

  1104. be strengthened

  1105. with power

  1106. through His

  1107. Spirit in your

  1108. inner being.

  1109. And in

  1110. chapter 6, he

  1111. says, be

  1112. strong in the

  1113. Lord and in the

  1114. power of His

  1115. might.

  1116. in Philippians

    Philippians 3:10

  1117. chapter 3, verse

  1118. 10, he says, I

  1119. am praying for

  1120. myself that I

  1121. would know Him

  1122. in the power of

  1123. His resurrection.

  1124. In Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  1125. chapter 1, he's

  1126. praying for the

  1127. church again.

  1128. He says, I

  1129. haven't ceased to

  1130. pray for you that

  1131. you would be

  1132. strengthened with

  1133. power according to

  1134. His glorious

  1135. might.

  1136. Would you

  1137. characterize your

  1138. life as one of

  1139. power?

  1140. maybe the

  1141. reason why you

  1142. feel so

  1143. powerless in

  1144. this life is

  1145. because we have

  1146. not dialed in to

  1147. the kind of

  1148. fellowship that

  1149. God has called

  1150. us to have.

  1151. Fellowshiping

  1152. relationships that

  1153. are channels of

  1154. divine strength and

  1155. power.

  1156. And throughout

  1157. the gospel of

  1158. Acts, or

  1159. throughout the

  1160. book of Acts,

  1161. you see how

  1162. that power shows

  1163. up corporately for

  1164. the church.

  1165. Really, as you

  1166. look through the

  1167. New Testament,

  1168. anywhere that

  1169. power is used,

  1170. it really is used

  1171. in conjunction

  1172. with the church at

  1173. large, not to

  1174. individuals.

  1175. If you want to

  1176. recognize and

  1177. experience the power

  1178. of God in your

  1179. life, it has to

  1180. happen through

  1181. relationships with

  1182. God's people.

  1183. Okay, so

  1184. drawing this to

  1185. a close, you're

  1186. asking yourself the

  1187. question, I know you

  1188. are.

  1189. He says, okay,

  1190. we've seen how

  1191. fellowship is

  1192. important to the

  1193. church.

  1194. We see how Christ

  1195. kind of initiated

  1196. this fellowshipping

  1197. relationships, but

  1198. come on now, is

  1199. this really the

  1200. strategy for the

  1201. future?

  1202. Is this really how

  1203. God intends for

  1204. this to happen in

  1205. his church?

  1206. And I'd like to

  1207. just quickly run

  1208. through some

  1209. examples in Acts

  1210. and show you that

  1211. fellowship is God's

  1212. enduring strategy.

  1213. fellowship is God's

  1214. enduring strategy.

  1215. So in Acts

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1216. chapter 1, and I'm

  1217. just going to

  1218. summarize this for

  1219. sake of time.

  1220. Acts chapter 1, the

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1221. disciples find

  1222. themselves having

  1223. just said goodbye

  1224. to Jesus.

  1225. Jesus has just

  1226. ascended to heaven

  1227. and he's given

  1228. them instructions.

  1229. He says, go and

  1230. wait in Jerusalem.

  1231. Wait in Jerusalem

  1232. for my power to

  1233. show up.

  1234. And when it

  1235. does, you will be

  1236. my witnesses

  1237. everywhere.

  1238. So they do.

  1239. In beginning in

  1240. verse 12, we find

  1241. them obeying the

  1242. instructions of

  1243. Christ.

  1244. Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1:12

  1245. verse 12.

  1246. If you're following

  1247. along, it's on page

  1248. 909.

  1249. It says, they

  1250. returned to

  1251. Jerusalem from the

  1252. mount called

  1253. Olivet, which is

  1254. near Jerusalem, a

  1255. Sabbath day's

  1256. journey away.

  1257. And when they had

  1258. entered, they went

  1259. to the upper room

  1260. where they were

  1261. staying.

  1262. Now, this is

  1263. important.

  1264. I want you to

  1265. recognize that they

  1266. didn't all go to

  1267. their own individual

  1268. places.

  1269. They went

  1270. together to a

  1271. house in

  1272. Jerusalem.

  1273. They were there

  1274. together.

  1275. And they

  1276. understood that

  1277. waiting did not

  1278. just mean sitting

  1279. on the couch

  1280. watching a football

  1281. game, as great as

  1282. that might be.

  1283. Waiting meant

  1284. praying.

  1285. If they had

  1286. learned anything

  1287. from Jesus, they

  1288. understood that

  1289. waiting and praying

  1290. went hand in

  1291. hand.

  1292. So that's what

  1293. they're doing.

  1294. They entered the

  1295. upper room, and

  1296. there they are

  1297. together.

  1298. And it says in

  1299. verse 14, all

  1300. these with one

  1301. accord were

  1302. devoting themselves

  1303. to prayer.

  1304. together with the

  1305. women and the

  1306. Mary, the mother

  1307. of Jesus and

  1308. his brothers.

  1309. This word, one

  1310. accord, is used

  1311. 11 times in the

  1312. New Testament, and

  1313. 10 of them show

  1314. up in Acts.

  1315. That's how

  1316. significant it was

  1317. for this early

  1318. church to express

  1319. their oneness,

  1320. their like-mindedness,

  1321. their singular

  1322. vision and focus

  1323. for ministry was

  1324. collaborative.

  1325. And there they

  1326. are together, and

  1327. when they are

  1328. together, God's

  1329. power shows up.

  1330. See that in

  1331. chapter 2, verse

  1332. 1, it says,

  1333. when the day of

  1334. Pentecost arrived,

  1335. they were all

  1336. together in one

  1337. place, there it is

  1338. again, and

  1339. suddenly there came

  1340. from heaven a

  1341. sound like a

  1342. mighty rushing

  1343. wind.

  1344. We find all

  1345. the same hallmarks

  1346. of fellowship

  1347. taking place

  1348. here.

  1349. Singular devotion,

  1350. togetherness, unity,

  1351. and partnership, and

  1352. praying together, and

  1353. we didn't have time

1354. to look at this, but

  1355. the word of God

  1356. being taught in

  1357. their midst.

  1358. And then the

  1359. power of God

  1360. comes through the

  1361. channel of this

  1362. fellowshipping

  1363. relationship.

  1364. Turn to the

  1365. page of chapter 2.

  1366. Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2:42–47

  1367. verses 42 to 47.

  1368. This is a

  1369. familiar verse to

  1370. you, and I just

  1371. want to point out

  1372. some specific

  1373. words.

  1374. First, in verse

  1375. 42, it says,

  1376. and, what's that

  1377. word, that next

  1378. word?

  1379. They, this group

  1380. of 2,000 believers,

  1381. this brand new

  1382. church era had

  1383. begun, and they

  1384. are all together.

  1385. Every single one

  1386. of them together,

  1387. fellowshipping, it

  1388. says.

  1389. They devoted

  1390. themselves to the

  1391. apostles' teaching

  1392. and the

  1393. fellowship.

  1394. And throughout the

  1395. rest of this

  1396. passage, you're going

  1397. to find how that

  1398. community, how that

  1399. community partnered

  1400. with each other to

  1401. distribute for each

  1402. other's needs, to be

  1403. interested in care.

1404. And as a result of

  1405. the fellowshipping

  1406. relationship they had

  1407. with one another, we

  1408. find the result in

  1409. verse 47.

  1410. It changed everything

  1411. about them, praising

  1412. God and having favor

1413. with all the people, and

1414. the Lord added to their

1415. number day by day, those

  1416. who are being saved.

  1417. Do you want that?

1418. Do you want that as a

  1419. church?

1420. Do you want God to show

  1421. up in relationships that

1422. we have with one another?

  1423. This explosive work of

1424. God in the hearts of his

  1425. people that is creating

1426. evidence of that work in

  1427. the world?

  1428. Well, maybe you'll say,

  1429. that's good for the

  1430. apostles.

  1431. But what about us?

1432. We don't have the same

  1433. gifts.

  1434. So briefly, turn to

  1435. chapter 11.

1436. This is where it explodes

  1437. out of Antioch.

  1438. And now, 15 to 20 years

  1439. later, the church era

  1440. has begun, and Antioch

  1441. will become the launch

  1442. pad for worldwide

  1443. evangelism.

1444. It will turn the world

  1445. upside down with the

  1446. gospel from this city

1447. of Antioch, made up of

  1448. a bunch of ragtag

  1449. misfits from Jerusalem

  1450. who got kicked out

  1451. because of persecution.

  1452. Briefly, verse 19.

  1453. Those who were scattered

  1454. because of persecution

  1455. that arose over Stephen

  1456. traveled as far as

  1457. Phoenicia and Cyprus and

  1458. Antioch, speaking the

1459. word to no one except

  1460. the Jews.

  1461. That's one group.

  1462. But, verse 20, there

1463. were some of them, men

  1464. of Cyprus and Cyrene,

1465. who on coming to Antioch

  1466. spoke to the Hellenists

  1467. and also preaching the

  1468. Lord Jesus.

1469. And what was the result?

  1470. Verse 21.

1471. In the hand of the Lord

1472. was with them, and a

  1473. great number who

  1474. believed turned to the

  1475. Lord.

  1476. Hallelujah.

  1477. Word gets back to

  1478. Jerusalem.

  1479. Jerusalem.

  1480. And the apostles

  1481. send this no-name guy,

1482. at least at the time,

  1483. the son of encouragement

  1484. named Barnabas, to go

  1485. and try to encourage

  1486. this band of people.

1487. He shows up in verse

1488. 22, and then he says,

1489. in verse 23, he came

1490. and saw the grace of God.

1491. He was glad and exhorted

  1492. them to remain faithful.

1493. And then jumping down to

1494. the end of verse 24,

  1495. before, and a great

  1496. many people were added

  1497. to the Lord, because

  1498. an encouraging ministry

  1499. of Barnabas.

  1500. And now fellowship

  1501. begins to really take

  1502. place.

  1503. Barnabas goes and finds

  1504. Saul, who is also

  1505. known as Paul.

1506. The two of them team

  1507. teach for the next

  1508. year.

1509. We find the results of

1510. that at the end of

  1511. verse 26.

1512. For a whole year, they

1513. met with the church and

  1514. taught, and a great

  1515. many people were

  1516. instructed.

  1517. And in Antioch, the

  1518. disciples were first

  1519. called Christians.

  1520. And then finally, this

  1521. last group of individuals

  1522. known as prophets, they

1523. also show up, and they

  1524. add their little giftedness

  1525. to the mix.

  1526. We see five different

1527. ways the word of God is

1528. brought to this group of

  1529. people.

  1530. It's spoken, it's

  1531. preached, it's encouraged,

  1532. it's taught, and now

  1533. it's prophesied.

1534. And as a result of that,

1535. we find in the remaining

  1536. verses 27 to 30, that

  1537. fellowship not only

  1538. happens amongst the

1539. people of God there in

  1540. Antioch, but it spills

  1541. out to Judea, where

  1542. they're now sharing

  1543. gifts and care and

  1544. love to the churches

  1545. who will be hurting

  1546. someday in the near

  1547. future because of a

  1548. famine.

1549. It says in verse 29,

  1550. the disciples determined

  1551. everyone according to

  1552. his ability to send

  1553. relief to the brothers

  1554. living in Judea.

  1555. That's what happens

  1556. when true biblical

  1557. fellowship is taking

  1558. place.

  1559. It always has an

  1560. outward component.

  1561. It is nurturing the

  1562. strength of individuals

  1563. so they can be

  1564. strengthened for

  1565. nurturing and helping

  1566. others.

  1567. Big things happen

  1568. when we are about

  1569. biblical fellowship.

1570. So we end where we

  1571. began.

  1572. The question is,

1573. what is the big deal

  1574. about fellowship?

  1575. And I trust this

  1576. morning as we have

  1577. looked into the

  1578. scriptures, we can see

  1579. fellowship is a big

  1580. deal.

  1581. It's part of God's

  1582. program to do big

  1583. things in this world.

1584. And so we as a

  1585. church have designed

  1586. a small group

  1587. ministry for you to

1588. plug in and not just

  1589. to have conversations

  1590. and interaction.

1591. We want that to take

  1592. place.

  1593. But we are nurturing

  1594. disciples so that you

  1595. can go.

  1596. We're nurturing

  1597. relationships that you

  1598. can invite and

  1599. encourage others to

  1600. participate in.

1601. That's why so many of

  1602. the small groups are

  1603. actually in communities.

  1604. It's our hope that

  1605. your neighbors might

  1606. benefit from that

  1607. touch that small

  1608. groups will have in

  1609. that immediate

  1610. context.

  1611. And by God's grace

  1612. grace and

  1613. according to his

  1614. power, we'll see

  1615. God show up through

  1616. this small group

  1617. ministry, not only for

  1618. you individually, but

1619. we'll begin to see how

1620. God will nurture us and

  1621. strengthen us and

  1622. strengthen our

  1623. children so that we

1624. can have an impact in

  1625. the world around us.

  1626. I wonder if a hundred

  1627. years from now,

  1628. someone might say,

  1629. you know, it was

  1630. because of my great

  1631. granddaddy in the

  1632. faith who was

  1633. nurtured in this

  1634. fellowshipping

  1635. relationship at

  1636. Maranatha Baptist

  1637. that I stand here

  1638. today.

  1639. May God use these

  1640. small group ministries

1641. to fan the flames of

  1642. gospel in your life

1643. and help us be more

  1644. impactful in the world

  1645. around us.

  1646. Let's pray.

  1647. God, we praise you

  1648. this morning for the

  1649. example of Jesus who

  1650. got this all started.

  1651. You who initiated

  1652. fellowshipping

  1653. relationships with

  1654. these twelve men who

  1655. would then become

  1656. eleven.

  1657. You initiated that in

  1658. their lives and you

  1659. fanned the flames of

  1660. knowledge and love for

1661. God so they could come

1662. to cherish you and in

  1663. cherishing you, they

  1664. could commend you to

  1665. others.

  1666. We stand here today

  1667. because of the legacy

  1668. of faithfulness in that

  1669. first century and the

  1670. legacy of faithfulness

  1671. that continued on

1672. through the ages to the

  1673. person who ministered

1674. the gospel to us and we

  1675. praise you.

  1676. How you understood that

  1677. whole process and you

  1678. instrumentally put those

  1679. individuals in our lives.

1680. Thank you for bringing us

1681. to faith in Christ and

  1682. help us in our

  1683. relationship with you to

  1684. convey relationship and

1685. love and care to the

  1686. community of believers

1687. around us so that we

  1688. can be strengthened to

  1689. reach this world for

  1690. Christ.

1691. We pray these things in

  1692. Jesus' name.

  1693. Amen.

  1694. Amen.
