  1. On May 24th, God opened a door that was glorious.

  2. !

  3. God is interested in His glory today.

  4. And He's interested in every one of us this morning bowing the knee before His glory.

  5. And He will do whatever is necessary to lead us into the greatness of Himself.

  6. To help us to see what is truly good.

  7. What is truly worthwhile.

  8. What is truly glorious.

  9. And it can only be found in Him.

  10. Oh, may God help us today.

  11. To rediscover the wonder of His glory.

  12. To come to the point where we say,

  13. God, You are truly glorious.

  14. There is nothing that I desire besides You.

  15. Heaven and earth may pass away.

  16. But if I have You, I have enough.

  17. I have everything.

  18. I have what truly satisfies.

  19. I have what is truly glorious.

  20. And Jessica, in this video that we just watched,

  21. talks about the door that God opened into her life

  22. to reveal the glory of Himself to her.

  23. And to help her manifest God's glory to her stepdad.

  24. And to anyone in the watching world who would take notice.

  25. What Jessica did

  26. was not a testimony to the value of her stepdad.

  27. Her stepdad was a wicked man.

  28. It's not even a testimony to the goodness of Jessica,

  29. but a testament to the glory of God.

  30. And what God can accomplish in every life.

  31. Every life that submits to Him.

  32. Every life that would bow the knee to the wonder of our God.

  33. might God open up a window into glory

  34. so that we can behold Him this morning

  35. and just stand back

  36. and just enjoy the wonder of our God today

  37. as we look into the Word.

  38. John chapter 12

    John 12 chapter mention

  39. in our continuing study through this Gospel

  40. pinpoints the significance of glory

  41. and connects glory of Christ with the cross.

  42. It's almost paradoxical.

  43. How is it possible for something

  44. that brought the most shame

  45. to evidence the most glory?

  46. How can that be true?

  47. We'll look at that this morning

  48. as we evaluate this passage.

  49. John chapter 12

    John 12 chapter mention

  50. beginning in verse 27.

  51. We're going to look at this continuing narrative.

  52. And a couple of weeks ago

  53. as Pastor Kenoyer shared with us

  54. we saw this small group of individuals

  55. we don't know how many there were

  56. this group of Gentiles or Greeks

  57. that came

  58. and they asked Philip

  59. they said,

  60. Hey Philip!

  61. We want a private meeting with Jesus.

  62. Can you arrange that for us?

  63. And Philip goes to Andrew

  64. as you remember

  65. and Philip and Andrew together

  66. go to Jesus

  67. and they say,

  68. Hey Jesus!

  69. There's this group of Greeks

  70. that wants to spend some time with you.

  71. They want some personal

  72. intimate interaction with you.

  73. And Jesus responds

  74. not in the way we'd expect

  75. but Jesus responds here

  76. in verse 23 of chapter 12

  77. and he says,

  78. The hour has come

  79. for the Son of Man

  80. to be glorified.

  81. Jesus had glory on his mind.

  82. Jesus had the cross in view.

  83. In just a few short days

  84. the cross,

  85. the brutality

  86. and the terror

  87. and the horror of the cross

  88. would come crashing down

  89. on the shoulders of Jesus Christ.

  90. And yet Jesus

  91. understood

  92. that through the cross

  93. glory would come.

  94. The glory of Christ

  95. and the glory of the Father

  96. would be made manifest

  97. through the cross.

  98. So I want to ask this question

  99. this morning.

  100. As I have wrestled this week

  101. with this question

  102. about glory in the cross.

  103. and that is

  104. how does the cross

  105. lead to glory?

  106. How does the cross

  107. lead to glory?

  108. In what way

  109. does the cross

  110. play a factor

  111. in exalting Christ

  112. and leading

  113. to the glory of God?

  114. What does the cross

  115. do

  116. to help us

  117. see the glory

  118. of Christ

  119. and the glory

  120. of the Father?

  121. And as we walk

  122. through this passage

  123. I want us

  124. to behold again

  125. the glory of God.

  126. To understand

  127. the significance

  128. of this central theme

  129. that was foundational

  130. in the life

  131. and ministry

  132. of Jesus.

  133. We'll see

  134. that it was

  135. the motivation

  136. for His coming

  137. to earth.

  138. It was the foundational

  139. purpose

  140. for Him

  141. becoming a man

  142. and going

  143. to the cross.

  144. Glory

  145. was in view.

  146. Let me read

  147. the first

  148. verse

  149. just for our

  150. instruction

  151. and some context

  152. so you can see.

  153. We'll be working

  154. through verses

  155. 27 to 36

  156. and I'll be

  157. I know there's

  158. four points

  159. in your outline

  160. today.

  161. I'm going to spend

  162. the bulk of our time

  163. probably 80%

  164. of the morning

  165. on point number one.

  166. So don't

  167. stress out

  168. about the fact

  169. that we still

  170. have three points

  171. to go

  172. and the time

  173. is almost up.

  174. Okay?

  175. I know if I were

  176. there I would

  177. feel the same way.

  178. So I think

  179. it's really

  180. significant for us

  181. to really

  182. soak

  183. and to bask

  184. in the

  185. important

  186. and crucial

  187. truth

  188. of the glory

  189. of God.

  190. We have got

  191. to understand

  192. this as a people

  193. and if we begin

  194. to understand

  195. the cross

  196. and how it

  197. relates to glory

  198. it will shape

  199. us as people.

  200. It will not only

  201. shape the lives

  202. that we live

  203. it will shape

  204. the way we

  205. present Jesus

  206. to others.

  207. So let me read

  208. this first verse

  209. and we'll get

  210. started.

  211. It says now

  212. Jesus says

  213. in verse 27

  214. if you're

  215. visiting with us

  216. and you're using

  217. a pew Bible

  218. it's on page

  219. 899.

  220. Now is my soul

  221. troubled

  222. Jesus says

  223. and what shall

  224. I say?

  225. Father save me

  226. from this hour

  227. but for this

  228. purpose I have

  229. come to this hour

  230. Father glorify

  231. your name.

  232. Then a voice

  233. came from heaven

  234. I have glorified

  235. it

  236. and I

  237. will glorify

  238. it

  239. again.

  240. First we see

  241. in these first

  242. few verses

  243. I want to draw

  244. our attention

  245. to the fact

  246. that the cross

  247. reveals

  248. the preeminence

  249. of God.

  250. The cross

  251. reveals

  252. the preeminence

  253. of God.

  254. He is supreme

  255. He is ultimate

  256. He is the only

  257. one that matters

  258. in your life.

  259. He is central

  260. He is foundational

  261. He is everything

  262. preeminent

  263. and I want us

  264. to see

  265. the significance

  266. of what Christ

  267. has accomplished

  268. for us

  269. in leading

  270. to glory.

  271. Now just by way

  272. of context

  273. and helping

  274. to develop

  275. this theme

  276. and helping

  277. you see

  278. how important

  279. it is

  280. for the gospel

  281. writer

  282. for John

  283. himself

  284. I want to

  285. give us

  286. some background

  287. information

  288. so bear with

  289. me here.

  290. I want us

  291. to see

  292. that God's

  293. glory

  294. is the main

  295. theme

  296. of John

  297. and his

  298. writings.

  299. God's glory

  300. is a theme

  301. throughout

  302. the gospel

  303. of John.

  304. We find

  305. here

  306. even in

  307. John chapter

    John 12 chapter mention

  308. 12

  309. that glory

  310. comes up

  311. in every

  312. section

  313. of this

  314. chapter.

  315. In the

  316. first few

  317. verses

  318. from verses

  319. 1 through

  320. 8

  321. what is

  322. taking place

  323. there?

  324. Jesus

  325. shows up

  326. in Bethany

  327. and Mary

  328. comes and

  329. worships

  330. Christ.

  331. He is

  332. preeminent

  333. for her

  334. and she

  335. pours out

  336. this costly

  337. ointment

  338. on his

  339. feet.

  340. She anoints

  341. his body

  342. for burial

  343. without even

  344. knowing that

  345. she was

  346. preparing him

  347. for that

  348. time.

  349. She humbles

  350. herself

  351. and worships

  352. her God.

  353. He is

  354. preeminent.

  355. He is

  356. worthy of

  357. worship.

  358. He is

  359. worthy to

  360. be adored

  361. in glory

  362. although it's

  363. not mentioned

  364. here in this

  365. first few

  366. verses

  367. certainly is

  368. the heartbeat

  369. of Mary.

  370. She recognizes

  371. the glory

  372. of Christ

  373. and she

  374. worships

  375. him.

  376. And then

  377. in the

  378. next several

  379. verses

  380. from verse

  381. 9

  382. through

  383. 11

  384. we find

  385. this man

  386. Lazarus

  387. who had been

  388. raised from

  389. the dead.

  390. And if you

  391. remember from

  392. our study

  393. in chapter

  394. 11

  395. you remember

  396. that the

  397. reason why

  398. Lazarus was

  399. raised from

  400. the dead

  401. was for

  402. the glory

  403. of Christ.

  404. Flip back

  405. just briefly

  406. to chapter

  407. 11

  408. and looking

  409. at verse

  410. 4 it

  411. says but

  412. when Jesus

  413. heard it

  414. meaning he

  415. heard about

  416. the fact

  417. that Lazarus

  418. was ill

  419. it says

  420. this illness

  421. does not

  422. lead to

  423. death

  424. it is

  425. for

  426. the

  427. what?

  428. The glory

  429. of God

  430. so that

  431. the son

  432. of God

  433. may be

  434. glorified

  435. through it.

  436. I would

  437. just encourage

  438. you

  439. underline

  440. that word

  441. the word

  442. for glory

  443. the glory

  444. of God

  445. and that

  446. the son

  447. of God

  448. might be

  449. glorified

  450. through it.

  451. And then

  452. in verse

  453. 40 of

  454. chapter 11

  455. notice

  456. what Jesus

  457. says to

  458. Mary

  459. he says

  460. did I

  461. not tell

  462. you

  463. that if

  464. you

  465. believed

  466. you would

  467. see

  468. the

  469. what?

  470. The

  471. glory

  472. of God

  473. Lazarus

  474. was a

  475. living

  476. testimony

  477. to the

  478. glory

  479. of Christ

  480. only

  481. Christ

  482. as the

  483. resurrection

  484. and the

  485. life

  486. could

  487. raise

  488. Lazarus

  489. from

  490. the

  491. dead.

  492. And

  493. as we

  494. go back

  495. to chapter

  496. 12

  497. verse 11

  498. we see

  499. because

  500. on account

  501. of him

  502. on account

  503. of Lazarus

  504. many

  505. of the

  506. Jews

  507. were going

  508. away

  509. and believing

  510. in Jesus.

  511. The glory

  512. of Christ

  513. the glory

  514. of the

  515. Father

  516. was in

  517. full view

  518. through

  519. the

  520. resurrection

  521. of

  522. Lazarus.

  523. And then

  524. moving to

  525. the next

  526. little section

  527. from verse

  528. 12

  529. to 19

  530. pastor

  531. referred to

  532. it as

  533. the

  534. tragic

  535. entry

  536. and

  537. some

  538. of

  539. your

  540. Bibles

  541. has it

  542. listed

  543. as a

  544. heading

  545. the

  546. triumphal

  547. entry.

  548. Again

  549. if you

  550. notice

  551. and I

  552. would

  553. encourage

  554. you

  555. to

  556. underline

  557. the

  558. word

  559. in

  560. verse

  561. 16

  562. John

  563. is caught

  564. up

  565. is caught

  566. up

  567. with the

  568. glory

  569. of

  570. Christ

  571. and not

  572. only

  573. the glory

  574. that he

  575. would

  576. experience

  577. as

  578. Jesus

  579. rode

  580. into

  581. Jerusalem

  582. and the

  583. crowd

  584. shouted

  585. Hosanna

  586. blessed is

  587. he who

  588. comes in

  589. the name

  590. of the

  591. Lord

  592. Jesus

  593. was

  594. definitively

  595. stating

  596. in full

  597. public

  598. view

  599. who he

  600. was

  601. identifying

  602. himself

  603. as

  604. savior

  605. as

  606. Messiah

  607. as

  608. future

  609. king

  610. and the

  611. people

  612. would

  613. recognize

  614. that

  615. in a

  616. moment

  617. and would

  618. bless

  619. him

  620. and glorify

  621. him

  622. shouting

  623. praises

  624. and

  625. Hosanna

  626. to him

  627. moving

  628. to

  629. verses

  630. 20

  631. to

  632. 26

  633. I

  634. just

  635. read

  636. for you

  637. verse

  638. 23

  639. as

  640. the

  641. Greeks

  642. came

  643. Jesus

  644. says

  645. the

  646. hour

  647. has

  648. come

  649. for

  650. the

  651. son

  652. of

  653. man

  654. to

  655. be

  656. glorified

  657. underline

  658. glorified

  659. and now

  660. here

  661. in

  662. this

  663. section

  664. of

  665. verses

  666. from

  667. 27

  668. to

  669. 36

  670. Jesus

  671. says

  672. father

  673. glorify

  674. your

  675. name

  676. then

  677. a

  678. voice

  679. came

  680. from

  681. heaven

  682. I

  683. have

  684. glorified

  685. it

  686. and

  687. I

  688. will

  689. glorify

  690. it

  691. again

  692. in

  693. the

  694. sections

  695. that

  696. we'll

  697. be

  698. looking

  699. at

  700. in

  701. the

  702. next

  703. couple

  704. of

  705. weeks

  706. from

  707. verse

  708. 36

  709. halfway

  710. through

  711. to

  712. verse

  713. 41

  714. we

  715. see

  716. in

  717. verse

  718. 41

  719. Isaiah

  720. said

  721. these

  722. things

  723. because

  724. he

  725. saw

  726. the

  727. glory

  728. and

  729. he

  730. spoke

  731. of

  732. him

  733. and

  734. then

  735. in

  736. our

  737. final

  738. section

  739. that

  740. we'll

  741. deal

  742. with

  743. the

  744. first

  745. week

  746. of

  747. October

  748. in

  749. verse

  750. 43

  751. it

  752. says

  753. for

  754. they

  755. loved

  756. the

  757. glory

  758. that

  759. comes

  760. from

  761. man

  762. more

  763. than

  764. the

  765. glory

  766. that

  767. comes

  768. from

  769. God

  770. do

  771. you

  772. think

  773. that

  774. the

  775. apostle

  776. John

  777. is

  778. interested

  779. in

  780. the

  781. glory

  782. of

  783. Christ

  784. I

  785. mean

  786. if

  787. we

  788. can't

  789. begin

  790. to

  791. see

  792. that

  793. from

  794. this

  795. chapter

  796. we're

  797. not

  798. going

  799. to

  800. see

  801. it

  802. anywhere

  803. in

  804. John

    John 12 chapter mention

  805. chapter

  806. 12

  807. there

  808. are

  809. eight

  810. references

  811. to

  812. the

  813. glory

  814. of

  815. Christ

  816. the

  817. glory

  818. of

  819. God

  820. and

  821. throughout

  822. the

  823. gospel

  824. of

  825. John

  826. John

  827. more

  828. than

  829. any

  830. other

  831. gospel

  832. twice

  833. as

  834. many

  835. is

  836. found

  837. in

  838. Luke

  839. three

  840. and a

  841. half

  842. times

  843. as

  844. many

  845. as

  846. found

  847. in

  848. Matthew

  849. and

  850. six

  851. times

  852. as

  853. many

  854. times

  855. as

  856. found

  857. in

  858. the

  859. gospel

  860. of

  861. Mark

  862. speaks

  863. about

  864. the

  865. glory

  866. of

  867. Christ

  868. the

  869. glory

  870. of

  871. God

  872. it

  873. is

  874. significant

  875. for

  876. John

  877. so

  878. not

  879. only

  880. in

  881. John

    John 12 chapter mention

  882. chapter

  883. 12

  884. but

  885. throughout

  886. the

  887. gospel

  888. of

  889. John

  890. we

  891. see

  892. this

  893. continuing

  894. theme

  895. right

  896. at the

  897. outset

  898. in

  899. John

    John 1 chapter mention

  900. chapter

  901. 1

  902. we

  903. see

  904. that

  905. John

  906. is

  907. looking

  908. at

  909. the

  910. glory

  911. of

  912. Christ

  913. and

  914. he's

  915. magnifying

  916. him

  917. for

  918. who

  919. he

  920. is

  921. In

  922. verse

  923. 14

  924. of

  925. chapter

  926. 1

  927. he says

  928. the

  929. word

  930. became

  931. flesh

  932. and

  933. dwelled

  934. among

  935. us

  936. and

  937. we

  938. beheld

  939. his

  940. glory

  941. the

  942. glory

  943. as of

  944. the

  945. only

  946. begotten

  947. of

  948. the

  949. father

  950. full

  951. of

  952. grace

  953. and

  954. truth

  955. in

  956. chapter

  957. 2

  958. verse

  959. 11

  960. John

  961. says

  962. this

  963. beginning

  964. of

  965. signs

  966. Jesus

  967. did

  968. in

  969. Cana

  970. of

  971. Galilee

  972. and

  973. he

  974. manifested

  975. his

  976. glory

  977. and

  978. his

  979. disciples

  980. believed

  981. in

  982. him

  983. in

  984. chapter

  985. 8

  986. verse

  987. 50

  988. he

  989. says

  990. I

  991. don't

  992. seek

  993. my

  994. own

  995. glory

  996. there

  997. is

  998. one

  999. who

  1000. seeks

  1001. and

  1002. justifies

  1003. and

  1004. then

  1005. in

  1006. chapter

  1007. 17

  1008. this

  1009. prayer

  1010. of

  1011. Jesus

  1012. to

  1013. the

  1018. leading

  1019. up

  1020. to

  1021. his

  1022. crucifixion

  1023. Jesus

  1024. is

  1025. praying

  1026. to

  1027. the

  1028. father

  1029. he

  1030. says

  1031. glorify

  1032. your

  1033. son

  1034. that

  1035. your

  1036. son

  1037. also

  1038. may

  1039. glorify

  1040. you

  1041. I

  1042. have

  1043. glorified

  1044. you

  1045. on

  1046. earth

  1047. I

  1048. have

  1049. finished

  1050. the

  1051. work

  1052. which

  1053. you

  1054. have

  1055. given

  1056. me

  1057. to

  1058. do

  1059. so

  1060. glory

  1061. stands

  1062. at the

  1063. outset

  1064. of

  1065. all

  1066. that

  1067. Christ

  1068. has

  1069. accomplished

  1070. and

  1071. the

  1072. purpose

  1073. for

  1074. which

  1075. he

  1076. came

  1077. we

  1078. see

  1079. that

  1080. here

  1081. in

  1082. verse

  1083. 27

  1084. Jesus

  1085. says

  1086. now

  1087. is

  1088. my

  1089. soul

  1090. troubled

  1091. and

  1092. what

  1093. shall

  1094. I

  1095. say

  1096. father

  1097. save

  1098. me

  1099. from

  1100. this

  1101. hour

  1102. but

  1103. for

  1104. this

  1105. purpose

  1106. I

  1107. have

  1108. come

  1109. to

  1110. this

  1111. hour

  1112. we

  1113. find

  1114. many

  1115. different

  1116. purposes

  1117. in

  1118. the

  1119. gospels

  1120. of

  1121. why

  1122. Jesus

  1123. came

  1124. but

  1125. we

  1126. see

  1127. that

  1128. this

  1129. is

  1130. the

  1131. central

  1132. purpose

  1133. and

  1134. this

  1135. would

  1136. be

  1137. the

  1138. next

  1139. point

  1140. that

  1141. I

  1142. want

  1143. to

  1144. make

  1145. God's

  1146. glory

  1147. is

  1148. the

  1149. central

  1150. purpose

  1151. of

  1152. Christ's

  1153. coming

  1154. his

  1155. purpose

  1156. is

  1157. the

  1158. central

  1159. purpose

  1160. of

  1161. his

  1162. coming

  1163. we

  1164. know

  1165. that

  1166. Jesus

  1167. came

  1168. to

  1169. seek

  1170. and

  1171. save

  1172. the

  1173. lost

  1174. we

  1175. know

  1176. he

  1177. came

  1178. to

  1179. serve

  1180. and

  1181. not

  1182. to

  1183. be

  1184. served

  1185. !

  1186. to

  1187. give

  1188. his

  1189. life

  1190. a

  1191. ransom

  1192. for

  1193. many

  1194. we

  1195. know

  1196. that

  1197. from

  1198. Mark

    Mark 1:38

  1199. chapter

  1200. 1

  1201. verse

  1202. 38

  1203. Jesus

  1204. says

  1205. let us

  1206. go

  1207. to

  1208. his

  1209. disciples

  1210. let us

  1211. go

  1212. into

  1213. the next

  1214. town

  1215. that

  1216. I

  1217. may

  1218. preach

  1219. there

  1220. because

  1221. for

  1222. this

  1223. purpose

  1224. I

  1225. have

  1226. come

  1227. in

  1228. in

  1229. Luke

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  1230. chapter

  1231. 4

  1232. he

  1233. says

  1234. I

  1235. must

  1236. preach

  1237. the

  1238. kingdom

  1239. of

  1240. God

  1241. to

  1242. other

  1243. cities

  1244. also

  1245. because

  1246. for

  1247. this

  1248. purpose

  1249. I

  1250. have

  1251. been

  1252. sent

  1253. in

  1254. John

    John 18 chapter mention

  1255. chapter

  1256. 18

  1257. in

  1258. speaking

  1259. with

  1260. Pilate

  1261. we

  1262. find

  1263. Jesus

  1264. says

  1265. for

  1266. this

  1267. purpose

  1268. I

  1269. was

  1270. born

  1271. and

  1272. for

  1273. this

  1274. purpose

  1275. I

  1276. have

  1277. come

  1278. into

  1279. the

  1280. world

  1281. to

  1282. bear

  1283. witness

  1284. to

  1285. the

  1286. truth

  1287. so

  1288. we

  1289. know

  1290. that

  1291. Jesus

  1292. has

  1293. come

  1294. !

  1295. for

  1296. many

  1297. purposes

  1298. but

  1299. the

  1300. central

  1301. purpose

  1302. the

  1303. purpose

  1304. that

  1305. brings

  1306. it

  1307. all

  1308. together

  1309. the

  1310. purpose

  1311. that

  1312. unifies

  1313. all

  1314. the

  1315. others

  1316. is

  1317. the

  1318. purpose

  1319. of

  1320. glorifying

  1321. God

  1322. and

  1323. in

  1324. these

  1325. verses

  1326. we

  1327. see

  1328. this

  1329. central

  1330. purpose

  1331. coming

  1332. into

  1333. view

  1334. the

  1335. purpose

  1336. that

  1337. Christ

  1338. has

  1339. for

  1340. coming

  1341. to

  1342. earth

  1343. is

  1344. to

  1345. glorify

  1346. himself

  1347. and

  1348. to

  1349. glorify

  1350. the

  1351. father

  1352. it's

  1353. unmistakable

  1354. through

  1355. this

  1356. text

  1357. as

  1358. we

  1359. look

  1360. at

  1361. Jesus

  1362. his

  1363. own

  1364. statement

  1365. about

  1366. his

  1367. purpose

  1368. to

  1369. glorify

  1370. himself

  1371. but

  1372. in

  1373. what

  1374. way

  1375. in

  1376. what

  1377. way

  1378. would

  1379. Jesus

  1380. and

  1381. the

  1382. father

  1383. be

  1384. glorified

  1385. through

  1386. the

  1387. cross

  1388. I

  1389. wrestled

  1390. with

  1391. this

  1392. this

  1393. week

  1394. and

  1395. as

  1396. I

  1397. looked

  1398. through

  1399. the

  1400. I

  1401. think

  1402. there's

  1403. 33

  1404. or

  1405. 39

  1406. different

  1407. accounts

  1408. of

  1409. the

  1410. glory

  1411. of

  1412. Christ

  1413. being

  1414. recounted

  1415. in

  1416. the

  1417. gospel

  1418. of

  1419. John

  1420. and

  1421. throughout

  1422. Matthew

  1423. and

  1424. Mark

  1425. what

  1426. is

  1427. the

  1428. point

  1429. of

  1430. glory

  1431. what

  1432. was

  1433. it

  1434. about

  1435. the

  1436. cross

  1437. that

  1438. led

  1439. to

  1440. glory

  1441. was

  1442. Jesus

  1443. glorified

  1444. because

  1445. of

  1446. obedience

  1447. to

  1448. the

  1449. father

  1450. was

  1451. he

  1452. glorified

  1453. because

  1454. he

  1455. conquered

  1456. sin

  1457. and

  1458. death

  1459. was

  1460. he

  1461. glorified

  1462. in

  1463. calling

  1464. people

  1465. to

  1466. repentance

  1467. was

  1468. he

  1469. glorified

  1470. because

  1471. he

  1472. accomplished

  1473. all

  1474. that

  1475. God

  1476. had

  1477. called

  1478. him

  1479. to

  1480. do

  1481. was

  1482. he

  1483. glorified

  1484. in

  1485. setting

  1486. all

  1487. things

  1488. right

  1489. all

  1490. things

  1491. back

  1492. to

  1493. normal

  1494. the

  1495. things

  1496. that

  1497. had

  1498. been

  1499. broken

  1500. in

  1501. the

  1502. fall

  1503. when

  1504. Adam

  1505. and

  1506. Eve

  1507. had

  1508. sinned

  1509. now

  1510. in

  1511. restoring

  1512. creation

  1513. back

  1514. to

  1515. its

  1516. original

  1517. sense

  1518. in

  1519. fellowship

  1520. with

  1521. the

  1522. father

  1523. was

  1524. he

  1525. glorified

  1526. through

  1527. being

  1528. the

  1529. supreme

  1530. example

  1531. of

  1532. humility

  1533. glory

  1534. was

  1535. he

  1536. glorified

  1537. in

  1538. becoming

  1539. the

  1540. supreme

  1541. savior

  1542. and

  1543. king

  1544. would

  1545. he

  1546. be

  1547. glorified

  1548. as

  1549. a

  1550. reward

  1551. for

  1552. the

  1553. cross

  1554. why

  1555. does

  1556. the

  1557. cross

  1558. point

  1559. to

  1560. glory

  1561. certainly

  1562. as we

  1563. look

  1564. through

  1565. the

  1566. gospel

  1567. we

  1568. see

  1569. evidence

  1570. of

  1571. the

  1572. glory

  1573. of

  1574. Christ

  1575. showing

  1576. up

  1577. in

  1578. so

  1579. many

  1580. different

  1581. ways

  1582. we

  1583. see

  1584. that

  1585. God

  1586. was

  1587. glorified

  1588. through

  1589. the

  1590. works

  1591. of

  1592. Jesus

  1593. as

  1594. Jesus

  1595. performed

  1596. miracles

  1597. and

  1598. disciples

  1599. and

  1600. followers

  1601. believed

  1602. it says

  1713. of

  1714. God

  1715. was

  1716. breaking

  1717. through

  1718. with

  1719. clarity

1720. and dimension and depth and wonder and fullness and balance and in beauty.

1721. All of these glimmers of God coming through the portrait of Jesus

1722. as he worked out and played out the life of God in the presence of others.

1723. And throughout the scripture, the glory of God is always connected to the person of God.

1724. It's always connected to the presence of God.

1725. It's his expression of his quality and character.

1726. Some examples might be Moses who in Exodus 33 says,

  1727. Show me your glory.

1728. And God said, I will make all my goodness pass before you

1729. and will proclaim before you my name, the Lord.

1730. And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious

1731. and I will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

1732. And as we remember, God put Moses in the cleft of the rock

1733. and let his presence pass before Moses and the glory of God was there.

1734. Also in the construction of the tabernacle in Exodus chapter 40,

    Exodus 40 chapter mention

  1735. it says,

1736. Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

1737. And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it

1738. and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

1739. In Isaiah 6 verses 1 to 4, Isaiah is having this vision of God and he's standing there.

    Isaiah 6:1–4

  1740. He says,

1741. I saw the Lord sitting on a throne high and lifted up and the train of his robe filled the temple.

1742. Above him stood the seraphim.

  1743. Each had six wings.

1744. With two he covered his face.

1745. With two he covered his feet.

1746. And with two he flew.

1747. And one called to the other and said,

1748. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.

1749. The whole earth is full of his glory.

1750. And the foundations of the threshold shook at the voice of him who called.

1751. And the house was filled with smoke.

  1752. The glory of God.

1753. His presence that was manifest in the Old Testament.

1754. And the presence of God that showed up through Christ in demonstration of his works and his words and his life

  1755. was manifest through Jesus.

1756. So that God showed through his life.

1757. And so the cross brings God glory by showing himself to the full.

1758. The cross is the fullest expression of who God is.

1759. The portrait is complete through the cross and through his resurrection.

1760. It is through the cross that we get the clearest picture and the fullest picture of who God is.

  1761. His justice and forgiveness.

1762. His power and his humility.

  1763. His hatred of sin.

1764. And yet forgiving and forgiveness in Christ.

  1765. His sovereignty over all.

1766. And yet his submission to authority.

  1767. His righteousness.

  1768. And yet his mercy.

  1769. His wrath.

  1770. And yet his patience.

  1771. His purity.

1772. And yet his willingness to endure the shame of sin.

1773. And taking it on himself.

  1774. His eternality.

1775. And yet his willingness to be subjected to frailty.

1776. We see in the cross.

1777. We see in the cross the fullest portrait of who God is.

1778. Showing up in full view.

1779. And calling us to the glory of God.

1780. Calling us to understand who he is in his mercy and goodness.

1781. So that Christ could show forth God in every way.

1782. Jesus put God on display through the cross.

  1783. In all his splendor.

1784. The portrait of God was seen in his fullest expression through the cross.

1785. So that one commentator writes,

1786. God receives glory when his attributes are manifested.

1787. And nowhere was his magnanimous love for helpless sinners.

1788. His holy wrath against sin.

  1789. His perfect justice.

  1790. His redeeming grace.

  1791. His forgiving mercy.

1792. Or his infinite wisdom was more clearly seen than in the substitutionary,

1793. propitiatory death of Jesus Christ.

1794. It is in the cross that we behold God.

1795. And it should call us to marvel at who he is.

1796. Christ's death was preeminently for God's glory.

1797. And so as we look at the cross, we remember that the cross was for God.

1798. The cross was to show the wonder of God.

1799. To call attention to the love of Christ.

1800. To the justice of Christ.

1801. To the truth of Christ.

1802. To the forgiveness of Christ.

1803. This picture of the glory of God culminates on the cross.

1804. So this truth should lead us to delight in the glory of him.

1805. And God's glory, point number three, God's glory needs to be the supreme affection of the saints.

1806. Since God's ultimate goal was in the cross was to glorify himself.

1807. To make much of himself.

1808. To show the fullest portrait of himself to the world.

1809. In the same way that purpose of Christ in the cross must drive us as individuals.

1810. It must drive our hearts to bow in worship to the glory of God through the cross.

1811. To see him is truly glorious.

1812. To glorify him means it relentlessly destroys glory in me.

1813. Let me say that again.

1814. The cross removes any perspective that would raise my value in the image of this world.

1815. And exalts the portrait of Christ in the portrait of God as being all glorious.

1816. There is a movement today.

1817. There is an undercurrent today.

  1818. In our music.

  1819. In our media.

1820. In the books and literature that are being produced.

1821. That would seek to convey that the cross proves that I can make much of myself.

1822. They would say that Christ's priceless sacrifice shows how much he values me.

1823. They would say that Christ's love on the cross demonstrates the length to which he will go.

1824. To show that I am the object of his love.

1825. And how much I mean to him.

1826. But the cross was never intended to convey the greatness of me.

1827. But the greatness of him.

1828. And I gave this video as an illustration.

1829. The practical outworking of what that looks like.

1830. No one would watch this video and say that Jessica's stepdad was worthy of forgiveness.

1831. Because he added some value to the table.

1832. He would say he deserves to be locked away.

1833. He deserves to be forgotten.

1834. He deserves maybe even to die for what he did.

1835. It doesn't even exalt Jessica.

1836. Jessica deflects all the glory to Christ.

1837. In working through her heart.

1838. To help her to do what she could not do on her own.

1839. And that is to operate in the strength of the Holy Spirit.

1840. And to convey the love of Christ.

1841. The love that was empowered by the Holy Spirit.

  1842. To convey forgiveness.

1843. To someone who is truly unworthy.

  1844. In every way.

  1845. And through that example.

  1846. God receives glory.

  1847. Because through that example.

1848. Only God can accomplish that kind of forgiveness.

1849. I appreciate what one commentator says.

1850. And I've actually provided several of these in the foyer out there.

  1851. It's chapter 10 of John Piper's book, Don't Waste Your Life.

  1852. It's a free resource online.

1853. But I printed several of these.

1854. And they're on the table out there.

1855. Let me read for you just a couple of snippets of this.

1856. To help reinforce this in your mind.

1857. John Piper puts it this way.

  1858. He says,

  1859. Oh God.

1860. You know I tremble now for fear.

1861. That many of the ones who call you Lord have made themselves the prize and glory of your grace.

1862. How many Lord have made your love a witness to their worth.

  1863. There was a time.

  1864. Love felt like this.

1865. When I could not conceive of any greater joy than the honor of my name.

1866. When I was so absorbed in me that it was inconceivable for joy to rise by admiring rather than being admired.

1867. But now, thanks to your mighty grace, I see it as an invitation.

1868. And so it came into the world.

1869. This great inversion we call sin.

1870. And love was made to stand now on its head.

  1871. I grieve Lord.

1872. Just to put it into words.

1873. But here it is with the shame.

1874. Your love no longer means that you do what you must to make yourself our joy.

1875. It has come to mean that you do what you must so that we can feel our worth.

1876. It was a sad exchange.

  1877. And doubly so.

1878. Not only did it rob our souls of that one joy that you designed to satisfy us for eternity.

  1879. But worse.

1880. It robbed you of your honored place as treasure of our lives.

1881. How could I, Lord, have ever been so blind?

1882. To think that being loved by you means making much of me and not yourself.

1883. How could I put my eye to some great telescope designed to make me glad with visions of the galaxies?

1884. And notice in the glass a dim reflection of my face and say,

  1885. Now I am happy.

  1886. I am loved.

1887. How could I stand before the setting sun?

1888. Between the mountain range and the vastness of the sea

1889. and think that the everlasting joy should come from making much of me.

1890. The glory of the cross.

1891. The purpose of the cross was so that we would make much of him.

1892. And as the object of his love.

1893. The objects who were unworthy.

1894. Objects who were enemies and rebels.

  1895. Hostile against our God.

1896. Should elevate our view of him.

1897. Not our view of us.

1898. Oh, the goodness and grace of our God.

1899. Now, running through the next three points.

1900. But that is a background.

1901. Most of the work has been done.

1902. Because what we see as playing out in the rest of this passage

1903. is we see the evidence of what the cross did.

1904. What it accomplished in showing the glory of Christ.

1905. First, we see in verse 31 that the cross reveals the purity and the power of God.

1906. Reveals the purity and the power of God.

1907. Notice in verse 31, Jesus says,

1908. This voice has come for your sake, not for mine.

1909. Now is the judgment of this world.

1910. Now will the ruler of this world be cast out.

1911. There should be nothing that should delight our heart more.

1912. For those who are persecuted.

1913. For those, excuse me, who feel like you're unjustly treated.

1914. To know that the judgment has come.

1915. That Christ on the cross declared that justice would happen.

1916. Sin would be dealt with.

1917. It would not go unpunished.

1918. It was punished in Christ.

1919. And it was a declarative statement that the sentence had been passed.

1920. That God would judge sin.

1921. It would not go forgotten.

1922. So that Paul, in encouraging and commending the church of Philippi,

  1923. says this in Philippians 1, 27 and 28.

  1924. He says this,

1925. Only let your life be worthy of the gospel.

1926. So that whether I come and see you or I'm absent,

1927. I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit,

1928. with one mind, striving side by side,

1929. and not frightened in anything by your opponents.

1930. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction,

1931. but of your salvation and that from God.

  1932. In enduring hardship,

1933. we are acting with Christ to declare that God will take care of sin one day.

1934. He's taken care of sin for us who are in Christ,

  1935. who have been forgiven.

1936. And because He is holy,

  1937. because He is pure,

  1938. He will judge sin.

1939. And we can rest in the fact that Christ,

1940. in being punished on the cross,

1941. in carrying the penalty for sin on Himself that led to death,

  1942. helps us to believe,

  1943. to be convinced,

  1944. to be assured,

1945. that He will continue to be faithful,

1946. to judge sin in the future.

1947. He is judge and justifier.

  1948. We can trust Him.

1949. But also the power of God that was displayed to the cross.

  1950. Satan was defeated.

  1951. His schemes were dismantled.

  1952. His desires were destroyed.

1953. His plan to disrupt the purpose of creation,

1954. Christ demolished through the cross.

  1955. In Colossians chapter 2,

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

1956. Paul brings this into perspective.

  1957. He says,

1958. Jesus set all of these legal demands aside.

1959. He nailed them to the cross.

1960. He disarmed the rulers and authorities

1961. and put them to open shame

1962. by triumphing over them in Him,

  1963. in Christ.

  1964. Jesus states categorically

  1965. that He is authority.

  1966. He is ruler.

1967. He is king over the visible and invisible parts of this world.

1968. Christ triumphed through the cross,

  1969. destroying death and sin

1970. and all the enemies that we would be confronted with.

  1971. Jesus was victorious.

1972. Next week we're going to deal more with this third point.

1973. The cross reveals the plan of God.

1974. The cross reveals the plan of God.

1975. We find in verse 32 and 33,

  1976. Jesus says,

1977. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth,

1978. will draw all people to myself.

1979. That plan involved Jesus' death.

1980. He alludes to it several times

1981. through His ministry to the disciples.

1982. He knows exactly what's coming.

1983. He's told them definitively what to expect.

1984. He knows that it will include several aspects.

1985. It will include Him being handed over to the Gentiles,

  1986. being mocked,

  1987. being shamefully treated,

  1988. being spit upon,

  1989. being flogged,

  1990. being killed,

1991. and then rising again the third day.

1992. He was not ignorant about the horror of the cross.

1993. And we find here even in verse 27

1994. that His soul was troubled because of it.

1995. But because of courage and obedience

1996. and abounding love and forgiveness,

1997. Jesus moved to the cross.

1998. It was part of the plan.

1999. He was willing to die.

2000. But as we'll look at more next week,

2001. the point of His dying was so that

2002. He could draw all men to Himself.

2003. Draw all men to Himself.

2004. Jesus came to seek and to save the lost.

  2005. What does this mean?

2006. Who is the all that Jesus is referring to?

2007. Who is the all that Jesus will draw to Himself?

  2008. Come back next week.

2009. We'll talk about that some more.

2010. Is it all men universally?

2011. Is it all men symbolically?

2012. Is it all men exclusively?

2013. We can see here in verse 37

2014. a hint of the answer.

  2015. It says,

2016. Though He had done so many signs before them,

2017. they still did not believe in Him.

2018. So we know that this drawing of all men

2019. is not drawing of all men universally.

2020. So come back next week

2021. and we'll talk about that some more.

  2022. What is that about?

  2023. And finally,

2024. the cross reveals the patience of God.

2025. And Jesus concludes this passage

2026. by calling His hearers to repentance.

2027. By calling His hearers to confess who He is

2028. and to believe in Him.

2029. The light is among you, He says in verse 35.

2030. For a little while longer,

2031. walk while you have the light,

  2032. lest darkness overtake you.

2033. The one who walks in darkness

2034. does not know where He is going.

2035. While you have the light,

  2036. believe in the light

2037. that you may become sons of light.

2038. As we draw this service to a close,

2039. I'll ask the praise team to come up.

  2040. And this morning,

2041. as we wrap up our service,

  2042. my call to you,

2043. to you who are here and listening

2044. to this message this morning,

  2045. the call is,

  2046. Jesus is near.

2047. Jesus has revealed His truth to you.

2048. Today is the day of salvation.

  2049. Will you respond

2050. while the light is near?

2051. We find in this next passage,

2052. Jesus probably having been teaching

2053. every day in the temple.

2054. We find at the end of verse 36,

2055. when Jesus had said these things,

2056. He departed and hid Himself from them.

2057. Jesus is giving us an opportunity

2058. to respond to the message of the gospel.

  2059. Will you respond today,

  2060. if you haven't already,

2061. and come to faith in Him,

2062. to make Him glorious in your life,

2063. to make Him Lord and Savior.

2064. We would love to introduce you

  2065. to that friend,

  2066. to that deliverer,

2067. to that rescuer of the soul.

2068. We would love to introduce you

  2069. to Jesus this morning.

2070. So let's stand as we sing

  2071. and let's praise.
