  1. What God can do, what God delights to do in life.

  2. Total transformation, total change, total change, total change, total change, total change,

  3. !

  4. True understanding of, as Rick and Lynn shared, true understanding of the weight of sin.

  5. A true recognition and true appreciation for who God was.

  6. And I show this for a second reason.

  7. The second reason is because we're moving through difficult waters in the passage in

  8. John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  9. I want to encourage you not only in understanding what God can do for you, what God delights

  10. to do in salvation, but to give you a taste.

  11. To give you a taste of what God wants to accomplish in your life.

  12. What God wants to accomplish through your life in this world.

  13. I see these videos and it just captures my heart and I am reminded of the power of God

  14. in accomplishing the impossible task of leading us to salvation.

  15. And I say to myself, I want a taste.

  16. I want a taste of that power of God working through me, channeling through me, and working

  17. in the heart and life of another individual to lead them to this kind of transformation.

  18. I want to see God's power show up in my life in a tangible and vivid way.

  19. God is in the business of doing extraordinary things.

  20. And I find myself getting caught up in the ordinary.

  21. I find myself becoming complacent and lethargic and okay with the mundane in life.

  22. With just skating by.

  23. With just getting through.

  24. With just making it to the weekend.

  25. Living for a Friday perhaps.

  26. Or just living for retirement.

  27. Living for that vacation.

  28. Living for that next time where you're going to really have fun.

  29. Where you're going to really live life.

  30. And God says, I want to show up today in your life.

  31. I want there to be power in your life today.

  32. I want there to be change in your life today.

  33. I want you to experience my presence today.

  34. I want you to have me today.

  35. And I find myself saying, I'm just okay.

  36. I'm okay with how things are.

  37. It's a little too uncomfortable to be moving into deeper fellowship with you.

  38. Because sometimes I understand that deeper fellowship with you means letting go.

  39. Some of the things that I really enjoy in life.

  40. And that's why this morning I ask you this question.

  41. And the question really comes from the text.

  42. We've been talking about the glory of Christ.

  43. And the question for us this morning is, do you savor?

  44. Do you savor God's glory?

  45. Do you savor the glory of Christ that was made manifest in the cross?

  46. Is it something that you treasure?

  47. Is it something that you cherish?

  48. Is it something that you value?

  49. And if it is something that you value, then it's going to shape the way you live.

  50. It's going to show up in the kind of people that we are.

  51. It's going to make a difference.

  52. Like it did for Lynn.

  53. Like it did for Rick.

  54. I appreciate how they summarized that.

  55. They believed in God, but it had no impact on their life.

  56. We're going to look at a group of individuals this morning from our passage in John chapter 12

    John 12 chapter mention

  57. that are exactly the same.

  58. It uses the term, they believed in God.

  59. But it goes on to say, they loved the glory of man more than the glory of Christ.

  60. And the difficult question for us this morning,

  61. the question I'm going to try to help us answer is,

  62. were they legitimate and authentic believers in Christ?

  63. Were they genuinely saved?

  64. Now I told you that John chapter 12 is a difficult passage.

    John 12 chapter mention

  65. It's a hard chapter.

  66. It confronts us with the glory of Christ.

  67. And in confronting us with the glory of Christ,

  68. it challenges us with,

  69. is God supreme?

  70. Is he Lord?

  71. Is he sovereign?

  72. Will we allow Jesus to be Lord?

  73. Will we let him be God?

  74. And in being God, will we let him be in control?

  75. And this is, if it was hard last week,

  76. it is especially difficult this morning.

  77. Because it forces us to take a hard look at our life.

  78. And if you're anything like me,

  79. I don't want to take a hard look at my life.

  80. The Apostle Paul to the church of Corinth says,

  81. he says, examine yourself.

  82. Test yourself to see if you're in the faith.

  83. Is it right for us to test ourselves?

  84. Is it right for us to ask these hard questions?

  85. I'll tell you what,

  86. I don't want to ask these questions.

  87. Even this morning as the pastor,

  88. in looking at this scripture,

  89. it would be far more comfortable for me

  90. to move to chapter 13.

  91. We can begin to talk about the Last Supper.

  92. After all, that's what we're doing this morning.

  93. It'd be far easier for us to deal with that subject

  94. than this one this morning.

  95. But it is here.

  96. These are the very last public words of Jesus Christ.

  97. These are the last words that he wanted

  98. the people in Jerusalem to understand.

  99. So these are significant.

  100. These are weighty words.

  101. These are hard words.

  102. And these words begin to summarize

  103. all of Jesus' public ministry.

  104. They come front and center

  105. as Jesus screams from we don't even know where,

  106. shouts to whoever will listen,

  107. this message that we're going to look at this morning.

  108. And it bears down on us today

  109. as we consider the cross.

  110. As we consider these words of Christ

  111. and we are forced to ask ourselves the question,

  112. do we savor God's glory?

  113. Will we allow God to be God?

  114. So we're in John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  115. Turn with me if you would.

  116. If you're a guest with us this morning,

  117. it's on page 899.

  118. I want to read the text

  119. and then we'll start to deal with the issues

  120. that are here in the text together.

  121. John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  122. And I'm going to begin.

  123. I'm going to back up to verse 41

  124. and then read to the end of the chapter.

  125. It says,

  126. It says,

  127. And Jesus cried out and said,

  128. Whoever believes in me,

  129. believes not in me,

  130. but in him who sent me.

  131. And whoever sees me,

  132. sees him who sent me.

  133. I have come into the world as light,

  134. so that whoever believes in me

  135. may not remain in darkness.

  136. If anyone hears my words

  137. and does not keep them,

  138. I do not judge him.

  139. For I did not come to judge the world,

  140. but to save the world.

  141. The one who rejects me

  142. and does not receive my words

  143. has a judge.

  144. The word that I have spoken

  145. will judge him on that day.

  146. For I have not spoken of my own accord,

  147. my own authority.

  148. But the Father who sent me

  149. has himself given me a commandment.

  150. What to say and what to speak.

  151. And I know that this commandment

  152. is eternal life.

  153. What I say, therefore,

  154. I say as the Father

  155. has told me to say.

  156. Without savoring Christ,

  157. without treasuring Christ,

  158. we need to ask ourselves the question,

  159. can there be authentic faith

  160. within us?

  161. What does it mean to savor him?

  162. What does that look like?

  163. How does it show up?

  164. And we'll see three ways

  165. this morning in our passage

  166. that savoring Christ

  167. will show up

  168. throughout this discourse.

  169. First, we see in verse 41

  170. through verse 43

  171. that those who savor Christ

  172. will speak of him.

  173. Those who savor him

  174. will speak of him.

  175. First, we see the positive example

  176. of Isaiah.

  177. Here in Isaiah,

  178. excuse me,

  179. in verse 41.

  180. It says,

  181. Isaiah said these things

  182. because he saw the glory,

  183. his glory,

  184. and spoke of him.

  185. Isaiah said these things

  186. because he saw the glory of Christ,

  187. the glory of God.

  188. And it goes back to Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  189. And it goes back

  190. to what we see in verse 40.

  191. What did Isaiah say?

  192. What did he talk about?

  193. And how did he express

  194. this understanding,

  195. this confidence

  196. in the glory of Christ?

  197. As we've seen through

  198. the book of John

  199. and specifically in this chapter,

  200. John chapter 12,

    John 12 chapter mention

  201. we've seen the glory of Christ

  202. come into view

  203. consistently throughout

  204. this chapter.

  205. More than any other chapter

  206. up to this point,

  207. John chapter 12

    John 12 chapter mention

  208. deals with the glory

  209. of Christ.

  210. And here now,

  211. concentrated in these

  212. last few verses,

  213. the glory of Christ

  214. is coming into full view.

  215. We find that

  216. John is emphatic

  217. about the glory of Christ.

  218. He speaks about it

  219. at the beginning

  220. of Jesus' ministry

  221. and now here

  222. at the end

  223. of his public ministry,

  224. he is dealing

  225. with it again.

  226. It should be no surprise

  227. that the gospel of John

  228. in speaking about

  229. the glory of Christ

  230. also concentrates

  231. on believing

  232. in Christ.

  233. We know John

    John 20 chapter mention

  234. chapter 20, 31.

  235. These things

  236. have been written

  237. so that you may believe

  238. that Jesus is the Christ,

  239. the Son of God.

  240. It should be no surprise

  241. that in order

  242. for us to come

  243. to true,

  244. saving faith,

  245. there needs to be

  246. a treasuring.

  247. There needs to be

  248. a beholding.

  249. There needs to be

  250. a savoring.

  251. There needs to be

  252. an understanding

  253. and a, you know,

  254. wondering

  255. at the glory of Christ.

  256. Christ.

  257. And now,

  258. in these final moments,

  259. John gives a,

  260. a kind of a commentary,

  261. a synopsis,

  262. an analysis

  263. of Jesus' life.

  264. He does that

  265. in verses

  266. 40,

  267. or 37

  268. to 42

  269. or 41.

  270. He helps us

  271. understand

  272. how can it be

  273. possible

  274. when Jesus

  275. shows up

  276. and demonstrates

  277. his glory,

  278. how can it be

  279. possible

  280. that so many

  281. people

  282. have rejected

  283. his glory

  284. and have turned

  285. their back

  286. on him?

  287. What is

  288. your final analysis,

  289. John?

  290. How can these

  291. things be true?

  292. Why do

  293. so many

  294. still do not

  295. believe?

  296. Well,

  297. verse 40,

  298. he gives us

  299. the answer.

  300. The answer

  301. that comes

  302. from the mouth

  303. of Isaiah

  304. who saw

  305. the glory

  306. of Christ

  307. Christ

  308. and recognizes

  309. the sovereignty

  310. of God,

  311. his lordship,

  312. his control,

  313. and he says,

  314. he has blinded

  315. their eyes

  316. and hardened

  317. their heart

  318. lest they see

  319. with their eyes

  320. and understand

  321. with their heart

  322. and turn

  323. and I would

  324. heal them.

  325. The beginning

  326. of Christ's

  327. ministry,

  328. it says,

  329. he came to his

  330. own and his

  331. own received

  332. him not.

  333. And here at

  334. the end,

  335. we find the

  336. same synopsis

  337. to be true,

  338. the same

  339. analysis

  340. to be true.

  341. Jesus coming

  342. to his own,

  343. spending himself

  344. for his people

  345. and what do

  346. they do?

  347. They reject

  348. him.

  349. How is

  350. this possible?

  351. The answer,

  352. this is the

  353. way God

  354. intended it.

  355. That is

  356. almost

  357. breathtaking

  358. for us

  359. to see

  360. and to

  361. believe.

  362. God

  363. intended

  364. that?

  365. How could

  366. God

  367. intend

  368. this

  369. to happen?

  370. And what

  371. does that

  372. do for us

  373. in terms

  374. of believing

  375. in the

  376. will of man

  377. to be able

  378. to choose

  379. God?

  380. Are these

  381. two truths

  382. in conflict?

  383. Is the

  384. will of man

  385. and the

  386. sovereignty

  387. of God

  388. in conflict?

  389. And the

  390. Bible answer

  391. to that,

  392. the simple

  393. answer to

  394. that is no.

  395. They are

  396. not in

  397. conflict.

  398. conflict.

  399. And we

  400. wonder how

  401. can that

  402. be true?

  403. We get

  404. a bit

  405. of that,

  406. of the

  407. answer in

  408. Romans chapter

  409. one,

  410. where it

  411. talks about

  412. the mutual

  413. responsibility.

  414. It talks

  415. about how

  416. God gave

  417. people up

  418. to uncleanness

  419. because

  420. they exchanged

  421. the truth

  422. of God

  423. for a lie.

  424. They chose

  425. rebellion,

  426. they chose

  427. wickedness,

  428. they chose

  429. to oppose,

  430. they chose

  431. to be enemies

  432. of him,

  433. and God

  434. refused to

  435. shine his

  436. light to them

  437. so they

  438. could not

  439. believe.

  440. Why?

  441. Why?

  442. We saw

  443. this last

  444. week as

  445. well.

  446. God

  447. allowed

  448. a hardening

  449. to take

  450. place for

  451. them because

  452. he needed

  453. to send

  454. Jesus to

  455. the cross.

  456. God

  457. intended to

  458. save

  459. sinners.

  460. God

  461. intended

  462. for the

  463. gospel to

  464. be made

  465. known to

  466. us as

  467. Gentiles,

  468. to be open

  469. so that we

  470. could enjoy

  471. the benefits

  472. of salvation

  473. that could

  474. not have

  475. happened had

  476. Jesus not

  477. gone to

  478. the cross.

  479. Paul says

  480. this in

  481. Romans 11

  482. 25,

  483. he says,

  484. I don't

  485. want you

  486. to be

  487. unaware of

  488. this mystery

  489. brothers,

  490. a partial

  491. hardening

  492. has come

  493. upon Israel

  494. until the

  495. fullness of

  496. the Gentiles

  497. has come

  498. in.

  499. And Isaiah

  500. saw,

  501. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  502. chapter 6,

  503. a glimmer

  504. of the glory

  505. of Christ,

  506. and what

  507. did it

  508. cause him

  509. to do?

  510. In verse

  511. 41 here

  512. of chapter

  513. 12,

  514. he saw

  515. these

  516. things

  517. and he

  518. spoke

  519. of him.

  520. He saw

  521. the glory

  522. of Christ.

  523. He beheld

  524. it,

  525. he wondered

  526. at it,

  527. and it

  528. caused him

  529. to speak.

  530. He says,

  531. woe is me,

  532. I am lost,

  533. I am a man

  534. of unclean

  535. lips,

  536. I dwell

  537. in the midst

  538. of a people

  539. of unclean

  540. lips,

  541. for my eyes

  542. have seen

  543. the King,

  544. the Lord

  545. of hosts.

  546. The only

  547. fitting response

  548. for us

  549. when we

  550. see the glory

  551. of Christ

  552. is to

  553. proclaim

  554. worship

  555. and praise

  556. and wonder

  557. and to speak

  558. of him

  559. to the world

  560. around us.

  561. that's the

  562. positive

  563. example.

  564. And now

  565. we transition

  566. to the

  567. negative

  568. example.

  569. This example

  570. that now

  571. that we

  572. see showing

  573. up in

  574. verses 42

  575. and 43,

  576. this negative

  577. example of

  578. the Jewish

  579. leaders.

  580. Here again

  581. it says,

  582. many even

  583. of the

  584. authorities

  585. believed in

  586. him,

  587. but for

  588. fear of

  589. the Pharisees

  590. they did

  591. not confess

  592. it,

  593. so that

  594. they would

  595. not be put

  596. out of the

  597. synagogue.

  598. For they

  599. loved the

  600. glory that

  601. comes from

  602. man more

  603. than the

  604. glory that

  605. comes from

  606. God.

  607. When we

  608. read these

  609. words,

  610. it almost

  611. makes us

  612. feel a sense

  613. of delight.

  614. Many

  615. believed in

  616. him,

  617. even of the

  618. Jews.

  619. Certainly

  620. that is a

  621. good thing,

  622. that's a

  623. positive

  624. thing,

  625. especially

  626. in light

  627. of all

  628. the opposition

  629. that Jesus

  630. faced through

  631. the retaliation

  632. and the

  633. opposition of

  634. the Jews

  635. throughout his

  636. ministry.

  637. Certainly

  638. this is a

  639. positive twist

  640. in the

  641. story,

  642. right?

  643. They've

  644. communicated

  645. scathing

  646. accusations

  647. through

  648. Jesus'

  649. ministry.

  650. They have

  651. schemed

  652. and are

  653. planning his

  654. death,

  655. but there

  656. are some

  657. who have

  658. separated

  659. themselves

  660. from that

  661. bunch,

  662. at least,

  663. and they're

  664. not openly

  665. attacking

  666. Christ,

  667. but they're

  668. also not

  669. openly

  670. confessing

  671. Christ.

  672. When it

  673. says that

  674. they believed,

  675. it uses the

  676. same word

  677. that's used

  678. throughout the

  679. gospel of

  680. John to

  681. describe

  682. belief,

  683. describe

  684. saving

  685. faith.

  686. Same word

  687. is used

  688. throughout the

  689. gospel to

  690. help us

  691. come to

  692. terms with

  693. the crowds

  694. that did

  695. believe in

  696. Jesus.

  697. But it

  698. also helps

  699. to identify

  700. throughout the

  701. gospel of

  702. John several

  703. groups of

  704. individuals that

  705. although they

  706. believed there

  707. was something

  708. defective,

  709. there was

  710. something deficient

  711. about their

  712. faith.

  713. Early on in

  714. Christ's

  715. ministry, I

  716. would encourage

  717. you just to

  718. turn to the

  719. beginning of

  720. John.

  721. Let's take a

  722. mini tour.

  723. John chapter

    John 2:23

  724. 2 verse

  725. 23.

  726. It says,

  727. Now, when

  728. he was in

  729. Jerusalem at

  730. the Passover

  731. feast, many

  732. believed,

  733. underline that,

  734. in his name,

  735. when they saw

  736. the signs that

  737. he was doing.

  738. But Jesus,

  739. on his part,

  740. did not entrust

  741. himself to

  742. them because

  743. he knew all

  744. people and

  745. needed no one

  746. to bear witness

  747. about him for

  748. he himself knew

  749. what was in

  750. men.

  751. They believed,

  752. but Jesus knew

  753. their heart.

  754. In chapter

  755. 3, this

  756. one Nicodemus

  757. comes to

  758. Jesus.

  759. We see there

  760. in the first

  761. part of the

  762. chapter, it

  763. says, a ruler

  764. of the Jews.

  765. This man came

  766. to Jesus by

  767. night and

  768. said to him,

  769. Rabbi, we

  770. know that you

  771. are a teacher

  772. come from God,

  773. for no one

  774. can do the

  775. signs that you

  776. do unless

  777. God is with

  778. him.

  779. There is

  780. faith.

  781. But as you

  782. turn through

  783. the rest of

  784. this narrative,

  785. you'll see

  786. in verse

  787. 12 in

  788. particular,

  789. Jesus

  790. confronts

  791. Nicodemus and

  792. says, if I

  793. have told you

  794. earthly things

  795. and you do

  796. not believe,

  797. how can you

  798. believe if I

  799. tell you

  800. heavenly things?

  801. There was a

  802. measure of

  803. intellectual

  804. affirmation in

  805. the things that

  806. Jesus was doing,

  807. but there was

  808. not the kind

  809. of faith that

  810. led him to

  811. salvation.

  812. Turning to

  813. chapter 6,

  814. we see many

  815. of the same

  816. things.

  817. in verse 2,

  818. it says,

  819. a great

  820. multitude

  821. followed him

  822. because they

  823. saw the

  824. signs which

  825. he performed.

  826. Dropping

  827. down to

  828. verse 14,

  829. it says,

  830. then those

  831. men, when

  832. they had seen

  833. the signs that

  834. Jesus did,

  835. said, truly,

  836. this is the

  837. prophet who

  838. has come into

  839. the world.

  840. But then,

  841. Jesus'

  842. analysis of

  843. their hearts

  844. comes in

  845. verse 64.

  846. for Jesus

  847. knew from

  848. the beginning

  849. who they

  850. were who

  851. did not

  852. believe and

  853. who would

  854. betray him.

  855. But perhaps

  856. it comes into

  857. best focus in

  858. chapter 8,

  859. John chapter

    John 8 chapter mention

  860. 8.

  861. We see in

  862. verse 30,

  863. in Jesus'

  864. dialogue with

  865. the Jewish

  866. leaders,

  867. it says,

  868. and he was

  869. saying these

  870. things,

  871. many believed

  872. in him.

  873. So, in

  874. verse 31,

  875. Jesus said

  876. to the Jews

  877. who had

  878. believed in

  879. him,

  880. if you

  881. abide in

  882. my word,

  883. you are

  884. truly my

  885. disciples,

  886. and you

  887. will know

  888. the truth,

  889. and the

  890. truth will

  891. set you

  892. free.

  893. Speaking to

  894. the same

  895. audience,

  896. the same

  897. group of

  898. individuals,

  899. who now

  900. get into

  901. a debate

  902. with Jesus,

  903. dropping down

  904. to verse

  905. 44,

  906. Jesus

  907. summarizes

  908. what is

  909. truly in

  910. their hearts,

  911. and says,

  912. you are of

  913. your father

  914. the devil,

  915. and your

  916. will is to

  917. do your

  918. father's

  919. desires,

  920. he was a

  921. murderer from

  922. the beginning,

  923. and has

  924. nothing to

  925. do with

  926. the truth,

  927. because there

  928. is no

  929. truth in

  930. him.

  931. There is

  932. the potential

  933. for faith,

  934. for believing

  935. that is not

  936. adequate,

  937. that is not

  938. complete,

  939. that is not

  940. authentic,

  941. that it

  942. affirms the

  943. things that it

  944. believes to be

  945. true,

  946. without it

  947. changing anything

  948. about who

  949. they are.

  950. And that

  951. is what

  952. John is

  953. now talking

  954. about here

  955. in the

  956. latter part

  957. of chapter

  958. 12.

  959. There was

  960. no change,

  961. they were

  962. unmoved

  963. to the

  964. point of

  965. worship,

  966. they were

  967. not savoring

  968. God's glory,

  969. there was

  970. this fascination

  971. with who

  972. Jesus was,

  973. there was

  974. this passing

  975. interest,

  976. there was

  977. this enjoyment

  978. of him,

  979. and some

  980. of the

  981. fringe

  982. benefits

  983. of coming

  984. and being

  985. healed,

  986. and being

  987. taught,

  988. being encouraged,

  989. and being

  990. part of this

  991. great movement

  992. that Jesus

  993. was leading.

  994. But there

  995. was no

  996. treasuring

  997. of Christ.

  998. Why do I

  999. say that?

  1000. I can say

  1001. that because

  1002. of now what

  1003. we see at

  1004. the end

  1005. of verse

  1006. 42 and

  1007. 43.

  1008. But for

  1009. fear of

  1010. the Pharisees

  1011. they did

  1012. not

  1013. confess it.

  1014. So they

  1015. would not

  1016. be put out

  1017. of the

  1018. synagogue,

  1019. for they

  1020. loved the

  1021. glory that

  1022. comes from

  1023. man more

  1024. than the

  1025. glory that

  1026. comes from

  1027. God.

  1028. Now this

  1029. word fear,

  1030. if you have

  1031. an ESV,

  1032. this word

  1033. fear is not

  1034. actually in

  1035. this text

  1036. here,

  1037. but it

  1038. points to

  1039. another verse

  1040. of what we

  1041. can see in

  1042. John chapter

    John 17 chapter mention

  1043. 17.

  1044. It was

  1045. for fear

  1046. of the

  1047. Jews there.

  1048. But maybe

  1049. particularly

  1050. and better

  1051. would be the

  1052. example in

  1053. John chapter

    John 9 chapter mention

  1054. 9.

  1055. Just turn a

  1056. page back

  1057. to look at

  1058. this account.

  1059. In John

    John 9 chapter mention

  1060. chapter 9,

  1061. if you remember,

  1062. this was the

  1063. blind man that

  1064. was healed

  1065. by Christ.

  1066. And there's

  1067. this conversation,

  1068. this debate

  1069. taking place

  1070. of whether

  1071. or not he

  1072. was really

  1073. born blind

  1074. and who

  1075. was the

  1076. person who

  1077. healed him.

  1078. And coming

  1079. into focus,

  1080. these questions

  1081. are now being

  1082. asked to his

  1083. parents.

  1084. Beginning in

  1085. verse 20,

  1086. his parents

  1087. answered,

  1088. we know that

  1089. this is our

  1090. son and

  1091. that he was

  1092. born blind,

  1093. but how he

  1094. sees we do

  1095. not know,

  1096. nor do we

  1097. know who

  1098. opened his

  1099. eyes.

  1100. Ask him.

  1101. He is of

  1102. age.

  1103. He will

  1104. speak for

  1105. himself.

  1106. His parents

  1107. said these

  1108. things because

  1109. they feared

  1110. the Jews.

  1111. the Jews

  1112. had already

  1113. agreed that

  1114. if anyone

  1115. should confess

  1116. Jesus to

  1117. be Christ,

  1118. he was to

  1119. be put out

  1120. of the

  1121. synagogue.

  1122. Everything

  1123. Jewish,

  1124. everything

  1125. related to

  1126. the social

  1127. structure,

  1128. anything

  1129. related to

  1130. business,

  1131. anything

  1132. related to

  1133. family,

  1134. anything

  1135. related to

  1136. community,

  1137. anything

  1138. that related

  1139. to future

  1140. legacy,

  1141. was anchored

  1142. in this

  1143. relationship

  1144. that would

  1145. have been

  1146. true in the

  1147. synagogue.

  1148. synagogue.

  1149. There was

  1150. much at

  1151. stake.

  1152. And for

  1153. these Jews

  1154. who were

  1155. part of the

  1156. leadership in

  1157. Jerusalem,

  1158. it was too

  1159. much to

  1160. ask.

  1161. It was too

  1162. big of a

  1163. confession to

  1164. make.

  1165. It was too

  1166. big of a

  1167. sacrifice to

  1168. make.

  1169. So they

  1170. could not

  1171. confess it

  1172. because,

  1173. as John

  1174. says,

  1175. in pinpointing

  1176. and zeroing in

  1177. on the true

  1178. motive of

  1179. their heart,

  1180. they loved

  1181. the praise

  1182. of man

  1183. more than

  1184. the praise

  1185. of God.

  1186. They did

  1187. not savor

  1188. Christ.

  1189. Now to

  1190. make this

  1191. intensely

  1192. personal,

  1193. where do

  1194. you fit in

  1195. this picture?

  1196. There is

  1197. the positive

  1198. example of

  1199. Isaiah,

  1200. there is the

  1201. negative example

  1202. of the Jews,

  1203. and then there

  1204. is an example

  1205. that you

  1206. bring to

  1207. the table.

  1208. I'm letting

  1209. you fill in

  1210. the blank.

  1211. Where do

  1212. you fit in

  1213. this story?

  1214. Positively

  1215. or negatively?

  1216. What dominates

  1217. your conversation

  1218. from day to

  1219. day?

  1220. What do you

  1221. find to be

  1222. the easiest

  1223. subject matter

  1224. to address?

  1225. What is the

  1226. most comfortable

  1227. to discuss?

  1228. In your

  1229. business

  1230. conversations,

  1231. in your

  1232. family

  1233. conversations,

  1234. what you

  1235. speak about

  1236. is what

  1237. you savor.

  1238. What you

  1239. speak about

  1240. is what

  1241. you savor.

  1242. So that the

  1243. Apostle Paul

  1244. says,

  1245. I'm not

  1246. ashamed of

  1247. the gospel

  1248. of Christ.

  1249. It is

  1250. what motivates

  1251. me.

  1252. It is

  1253. what moves

  1254. me.

  1255. It is

  1256. what encourages

  1257. my soul.

  1258. I can't

  1259. help, he

  1260. says in

  1261. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  1262. chapter 2,

  1263. I'm determined

  1264. to know nothing

  1265. among you

  1266. except Jesus

  1267. Christ and

  1268. him crucified.

  1269. There is no

  1270. greater subject

  1271. matter I'd

  1272. rather address

  1273. than the subject

  1274. matter of

  1275. Jesus Christ.

  1276. In our

  1277. conversations,

  1278. is Jesus

  1279. worth speaking

  1280. about?

  1281. Is Jesus

  1282. worth taking

  1283. risks over?

  1284. Does he

  1285. motivate your

  1286. mouth and

  1287. as an

  1288. expression of

  1289. what's coming

  1290. out of your

  1291. mouth, as

  1292. Jesus says,

  1293. it is a fruit

  1294. of what is

  1295. actually in

  1296. the heart.

  1297. Does our

  1298. heart reveal

  1299. an affection

  1300. and a

  1301. savoring of

  1302. Jesus Christ

  1303. so that it

  1304. comes forth

  1305. in how we

  1306. speak?

  1307. It shows

  1308. up in

  1309. how we

  1310. speak with

  1311. individuals.

  1312. Next, as we

  1313. move to

  1314. verses 44

  1315. and 46,

  1316. in John

    John 12 chapter mention

  1317. chapter 12,

  1318. Jesus now

  1319. emerges from

  1320. the shadows.

  1321. We see his

  1322. last words in

  1323. the temple

  1324. in verse

  1325. 36,

  1326. speaking about

  1327. light and

  1328. speaking about

  1329. his ministry

  1330. and speaking

  1331. about what he

  1332. is going to

  1333. do on the

  1334. cross.

  1335. And then it

  1336. says at the

  1337. end of verse

  1338. 36, when

  1339. Jesus had

  1340. said these

  1341. things, he

  1342. departed and

  1343. hid himself

  1344. from them.

  1345. Jesus moves

  1346. out of the

  1347. temple square,

  1348. Jesus moves

  1349. into the

  1350. shadows, and

  1351. now he

  1352. emerges for

  1353. one last

  1354. declaration,

  1355. one last

  1356. statement to

  1357. summarize his

  1358. ministry.

  1359. In verses

  1360. 44 to

  1361. 50, and

  1362. it begins

  1363. with a

  1364. vision of

  1365. him.

  1366. Do you

  1367. see him?

  1368. And when

  1369. you savor

  1370. him, you

  1371. will see

  1372. him.

  1373. You will

  1374. believe in

  1375. him.

  1376. That's what

  1377. Jesus says in

  1378. verse 44.

  1379. Whoever

  1380. believes in

  1381. me, believes

  1382. not in

  1383. him who,

  1384. excuse me,

  1385. whoever

  1386. believes in

  1387. me, believes

  1388. not in

  1389. me, but

  1390. in him

  1391. who sent

  1392. me.

  1393. And whoever

  1394. sees me,

  1395. sees him

  1396. who sent

  1397. me.

  1398. I have come

  1399. into this

  1400. world as

  1401. light, so

  1402. that whoever

  1403. believes in

  1404. me may not

  1405. remain in

  1406. darkness.

  1407. Jesus was

  1408. sent from

  1409. the Father.

  1410. Do you

  1411. see him?

  1412. Do you

  1413. savor him?

  1414. True vision

  1415. leads to

  1416. true faith.

  1417. When Jesus

  1418. shows up and

  1419. we begin to

  1420. believe who

  1421. Jesus is,

  1422. what his

  1423. true identity

  1424. is, it will

  1425. shape the

  1426. way that we

  1427. live.

  1428. Jesus

  1429. repeatedly

  1430. talks about

  1431. him proceeding

  1432. from the

  1433. Father, him

  1434. coming from

  1435. the Father, his

  1436. fellowship with

  1437. the Father, him

  1438. representing the

  1439. Father.

  1440. It shows up

  1441. tremendously

  1442. throughout the

  1443. Gospel of

  1444. John.

  1445. I have this

  1446. little graphic

  1447. up here just

  1448. to give you

  1449. an idea of

  1450. how much

  1451. John is

  1452. interested in

  1453. Jesus'

  1454. relationship

  1455. with the

  1456. Father.

  1457. Believing

  1458. in me

  1459. depends on

  1460. your view

  1461. of who

  1462. God is.

  1463. And if

  1464. your view

  1465. of God

  1466. is proper,

  1467. if it is

  1468. correct, then

  1469. you will see

  1470. me not as

  1471. some good

  1472. prophet, not

  1473. as some good

  1474. teacher, not

  1475. as just a

  1476. miracle worker,

  1477. you will see me

  1478. as God in the

  1479. flesh.

  1480. You will see me

  1481. as one who

  1482. is sent from

  1483. him, showing

  1484. up to convey

  1485. the words of

  1486. God to you.

  1487. you think

  1488. this was

  1489. significant in

  1490. the ministry

  1491. of Christ?

  1492. Especially

  1493. here in the

  1494. Gospel of

  1495. John, you

  1496. better believe

  1497. it.

  1498. Jesus is

  1499. emphatic about

  1500. this point.

  1501. You cannot

  1502. have God

  1503. without having

  1504. me.

  1505. I'm not an

  1506. optional part

  1507. of this

  1508. conversation

  1509. in relationship

  1510. to your

  1511. view of who

  1512. God is.

  1513. you must

  1514. see me as

  1515. having proceeded

  1516. from him,

  1517. having been

  1518. sent from

  1519. him.

  1520. The man

  1521. who believes,

  1522. the man

  1523. who believes

  1524. in God

  1525. must believe

  1526. in me.

  1527. But he

  1528. also comes

  1529. to shine

  1530. the light

  1531. into the

  1532. world.

  1533. He was

  1534. sent from

  1535. the Father,

  1536. we see that

  1537. here twice

  1538. in these

  1539. two verses,

  1540. we also see

  1541. that he

  1542. shines his

  1543. light into

  1544. the world.

  1545. Again,

  1546. this is a

  1547. principal theme

  1548. throughout the

  1549. gospel of

  1550. John.

  1551. As one

  1552. who comes

  1553. to shine,

  1554. Jesus brings

  1555. the truth.

  1556. Jesus cuts

  1557. through the

  1558. fog of

  1559. tradition.

  1560. Jesus helps

  1561. to demonstrate

  1562. the inadequacy

  1563. of the

  1564. perceptions

  1565. that the

  1566. religious leaders

  1567. had brought

  1568. to bear

  1569. in the lives

  1570. of the Jews

  1571. at the time.

  1572. He sets

  1573. the record

  1574. straight about

  1575. God's

  1576. expectations.

  1577. He shows

  1578. God's character

  1579. that shocked

  1580. the multitudes.

  1581. in the way

  1582. that Jesus

  1583. handled the

  1584. Old Testament,

  1585. in his

  1586. treatment of

  1587. the Sabbath,

  1588. in his

  1589. defining of

  1590. the law,

  1591. his forgiveness

  1592. of sins,

  1593. his compassion

  1594. for the weak,

  1595. his mercy

  1596. to the outcast,

  1597. his posture

  1598. towards the rich,

  1599. his distance

  1600. from the

  1601. mainstream,

  1602. his rebuke

  1603. to the religious

  1604. leaders.

  1605. Everything

  1606. that Jesus

  1607. did confronted

  1608. and exposed

  1609. the people.

  1610. it shined

  1611. the light

  1612. into their

  1613. desire

  1614. to be

  1615. self-sufficient.

  1616. It pointed

  1617. supremely

  1618. to worship

  1619. of God.

  1620. It steered

  1621. them away

  1622. from everything

  1623. that they

  1624. had anchored

  1625. their life

  1626. in,

  1627. the synagogue

  1628. and the temple

  1629. and even

  1630. the law

  1631. and helped

  1632. them understand

  1633. that everything

  1634. is supremely

  1635. encompassed

  1636. in the person

  1637. of Christ.

  1638. He exposed

  1639. their heart

  1640. of idolatry

  1641. and uncovered

  1642. the nakedness

  1643. of their hearts.

  1644. He shined

  1645. the light

  1646. into their life

  1647. and let them

  1648. deal with the truth.

  1649. And in doing

  1650. that,

  1651. He also

  1652. confronted them

  1653. in a way

  1654. that would help

  1655. lead them

  1656. out of darkness

  1657. and lead them

  1658. into light.

  1659. He separates

  1660. true believers

  1661. from the darkness.

  1662. We see that here

  1663. in verse 46.

  1664. whoever believes

  1665. in me

  1666. will not

  1667. remain

  1668. in darkness.

  1669. He separates

  1670. us from

  1671. the darkness.

  1672. John continues

  1673. this theme

  1674. in his epistle

  1675. in 1 John.

  1676. He says,

  1677. love not the world

  1678. neither the things

1679. that are in the world

  1680. because if you

  1681. love the world

  1682. the love

  1683. of the Father

  1684. is not

  1685. in you.

  1686. you cannot

  1687. have

  1688. the darkness

  1689. and be called

  1690. sons of light.

  1691. I came

  1692. to help

  1693. lead you

  1694. to life

  1695. in light.

  1696. Not simply

  1697. coming to church.

  1698. Not simply

  1699. reading your Bible.

  1700. Not simply

  1701. knowing all

  1702. the good answers.

  1703. Not simply

  1704. going to small group

1705. or singing in the choir

  1706. or serving

  1707. in children's ministry.

  1708. Having a good

  1709. work ethic.

  1710. work ethic.

  1711. Being kind

  1712. to your neighbors.

  1713. Giving all your money.

  1714. All of those

  1715. things are good.

  1716. But Jesus

  1717. wants to draw

  1718. our attention

  1719. to savoring

  1720. him

  1721. and living

  1722. in the light.

  1723. It will

  1724. shape you.

  1725. It will

  1726. mark you

  1727. as an individual.

  1728. It will lead you

  1729. to this final

  1730. aspect of

  1731. savoring

  1732. Christ

  1733. that we find

  1734. in these last

  1735. few verses.

  1736. He says

  1737. in verse

  1738. 47

  1739. if anyone

  1740. hears my words

  1741. and does

  1742. not keep

  1743. them

  1744. I don't

  1745. judge him

  1746. for I did

  1747. not come

  1748. to judge

  1749. the world

  1750. but to

  1751. save

  1752. the world.

  1753. You will

  1754. if you are

  1755. a son

  1756. or a daughter

  1757. of light

  1758. you will

  1759. submit

  1760. to him.

  1761. You will

  1762. recognize

  1763. that your

  1764. ultimate

  1765. accountability

  1766. is to the

  1767. words

  1768. and the

  1769. standard

  1770. that he

  1771. set.

  1772. and you

  1773. with the

  1774. power of

  1775. the Holy

  1776. Spirit

  1777. will walk

  1778. in the

  1779. words

  1780. that Christ

  1781. has given

  1782. to us.

  1783. His words

  1784. cannot be

  1785. optional.

  1786. They're not

  1787. secondary.

  1788. They're primary.

  1789. They're foundational.

  1790. They're vital

  1791. for spiritual

  1792. life.

  1793. They lead

  1794. to life

  1795. and wisdom

  1796. and fellowship

  1797. with God

  1798. and peace

  1799. and satisfaction

  1800. and joy

  1801. and productivity

  1802. and confidence

  1803. and everything

  1804. good can be

  1805. found in

  1806. conforming our

  1807. lives to the

  1808. word of God.

  1809. For all

  1810. that God's

  1811. word brings

  1812. the greatest

  1813. struggle

  1814. that it

  1815. demands

  1816. is a struggle

  1817. of death.

  1818. Death

  1819. to self

  1820. so that

  1821. God can reign

  1822. as king

  1823. over your life.

  1824. Do

  1825. we love

  1826. God

  1827. supremely?

  1828. Is this

  1829. command

  1830. our standard?

  1831. Do we

  1832. recognize

  1833. that we

  1834. will be

  1835. one day

  1836. accountable

  1837. to the

  1838. words

  1839. that he

  1840. has

  1841. shared?

  1842. And

  1843. finally,

  1844. you will

  1845. recognize

  1846. the authority

  1847. of his

  1848. words in

  1849. verses

  1850. 49 and

  1851. 50.

  1852. I have

  1853. not spoken

  1854. on my

  1855. own

  1856. authority

  1857. but the

  1858. father

  1859. who sent

  1860. me

  1861. has

  1862. himself

  1863. given

  1864. me a

  1865. command

  1866. what to

  1867. say

  1868. and what

  1869. to speak.

  1870. These

  1871. words are

  1872. coming

  1873. from God

  1874. almighty.

  1875. does

  1876. God

  1877. have

  1878. authority

  1879. over you?

  1880. Does

  1881. he have

  1882. authority

  1883. over me?

  1884. Do

  1885. I live

  1886. my life

  1887. underneath

  1888. his

  1889. governance,

  1890. underneath

  1891. his

  1892. control,

  1893. underneath

  1894. his

  1895. sovereignty

  1896. and lordship

  1897. and authority?

  1898. Does

  1899. God

  1900. have a

  1901. right

  1902. to speak

  1903. into

  1904. my

  1905. life,

  1906. into

  1907. your

  1908. life?

  1909. does

  1910. he have

  1911. a

  1912. right

  1913. to

  1914. boss

  1915. you

  1916. around

  1917. as

  1918. it

  1919. were?

  1920. To

  1921. help

  1922. you

  1923. understand

  1924. what

  1925. his

  1926. requirements

  1927. and

  1928. desires

  1929. are?

  1930. And do

  1931. those

  1932. words

  1933. help

  1934. to

  1935. determine

  1936. and to

  1937. guide

  1938. us

  1939. in

  1940. our

  1941. hobbies,

  1942. in

  1943. our

  1944. leisure,

  1945. in

  1946. our

  1947. downtime,

  1948. in

  1949. our

  1950. family

  1951. time,

  1952. in

  1953. our

  1954. business

  1955. engagements,

  1956. wherever

  1957. we are,

  1958. do

  1959. God's

  1960. words

  1961. provide

  1962. direction

  1963. and help

  1964. to steer

  1965. us in

  1966. the way

  1967. that he

  1968. wants us

  1969. to go?

  1970. Or

  1971. do we

  1972. find

  1973. ourselves

  1974. just

  1975. checking

  1976. out

  1977. of

  1978. Christian

  1979. things

  1980. during

  1981. the week

  1982. and then

  1983. showing up

  1984. to let

  1985. God

  1986. tell us

  1987. what to

  1988. do

  1989. on

  1990. Sunday?

  1991. God

  1992. wants

  1993. to be

  1994. supreme

  1995. for us.

  1996. But if

  1997. we're

  1998. honest,

  1999. if I'm

  2000. honest

  2001. with

  2002. myself,

  2003. I

  2004. understand

  2005. that

  2006. there is

  2007. a constant

  2008. struggle

  2009. in my

  2010. life

  2011. to align

  2012. my

  2013. life

  2014. with the

  2015. word

  2016. of God.

  2017. And I

  2018. imagine

  2019. that if

  2020. I were

  2021. to ask

  2022. any of

  2023. you this

  2024. morning,

  2025. we would

  2026. all express

  2027. the same

  2028. struggle,

  2029. the struggle

  2030. to be

  2031. consistent,

  2032. the struggle

  2033. to make

  2034. him Lord

  2035. in every

  2036. area of

  2037. our

  2038. life.

  2039. We get

  2040. that.

  2041. And I

  2042. think God

  2043. gets that

  2044. too.

  2045. He understands

  2046. that there

  2047. will be

  2048. a struggle

  2049. and that's

  2050. why he

  2051. has given

  2052. us

  2053. opportunity

  2054. on a

  2055. consistent

  2056. basis

  2057. to remember.

  2058. He gives

  2059. us the

  2060. joy of

  2061. remembrance,

  2062. of bringing

  2063. to our

  2064. attention

  2065. the things

  2066. that are

  2067. vital,

  2068. the things

  2069. that are

  2070. important.

  2071. And so

  2072. this morning

  2073. as we

  2074. take this

  2075. bread and

  2076. this cup

  2077. up,

  2078. it's our

  2079. opportunity

  2080. to remember

  2081. what Christ

  2082. has said,

  2083. to remember

  2084. what he

  2085. has done,

  2086. to remember

  2087. what the

  2088. cross stands

  2089. for,

  2090. it stands

  2091. for his

  2092. glory,

  2093. it stands

  2094. for him

  2095. showing forth

  2096. his true

  2097. identity,

  2098. and giving

  2099. ourselves the

  2100. opportunity

  2101. to bow the

  2102. knee in

  2103. worship,

  2104. and to say,

  2105. God,

  2106. I have

  2107. failed again.

  2108. God,

  2109. please align

  2110. my heart

  2111. with your

  2112. word,

  2113. help me

  2114. to be

  2115. consistent,

  2116. help me

  2117. to be

  2118. true,

  2119. help me

  2120. as I

  2121. examine

  2122. myself,

  2123. as I

  2124. evaluate

  2125. my speech,

  2126. the things

  2127. that I

  2128. say,

  2129. as I

  2130. evaluate

  2131. what I

  2132. believe and

  2133. what I

  2134. see to be

  2135. true about

  2136. you,

  2137. and as I

  2138. submit to

  2139. your commands,

  2140. Lord,

  2141. help me to

  2142. do that

  2143. faithfully,

  2144. help me

  2145. to be

  2146. consistent,

  2147. let your

  2148. Holy Spirit

  2149. do a work

  2150. in my

  2151. life,

  2152. and as

  2153. we prepare

  2154. our hearts

  2155. for this,

  2156. let me pray,

  2157. I'll ask the

  2158. men to

  2159. come forward,

  2160. and we'll

  2161. remember the

  2162. Lord through

  2163. this time

  2164. of communion.

  2165. Lord,

  2166. these are

  2167. hard words

  2168. this morning

  2169. that we

  2170. have looked

  2171. at,

  2172. we're so

  2173. grateful that

  2174. you do

  2175. your work

  2176. in our

  2177. lives.

  2178. As Paul

  2179. says,

  2180. work out

  2181. your salvation

  2182. with fear

  2183. and trembling,

  2184. that's our

  2185. job,

  2186. for it is

  2187. God,

  2188. he moves

  2189. on,

  2190. it is God

  2191. who does

  2192. the work,

  2193. he wills

  2194. in our

  2195. life to

  2196. accomplish

  2197. his purposes.

  2198. we thank

  2199. you that

  2200. you allow

  2201. your Holy

  2202. Spirit to

  2203. overcome our

  2204. inadequacy,

  2205. to overcome

  2206. our limitations,

  2207. to overcome

  2208. our powerlessness,

  2209. and to lead

  2210. us to

  2211. obedience.

  2212. We ask that

  2213. you would do

  2214. your work

  2215. this morning

  2216. for us.

  2217. We pray

  2218. that your

  2219. cross,

  2220. your glory

  2221. would be

  2222. front and

  2223. center,

  2224. not only

  2225. in this

  2226. time,

  2227. but throughout

  2228. the rest

  2229. of this

  2230. week.

  2231. May we

  2232. see you

  2233. show up

  2234. for us.

  2235. May there

  2236. be revival

  2237. personally,

  2238. so that we

  2239. can begin

  2240. to see

  2241. your working

  2242. in the lives

  2243. of the people

  2244. around us.

  2245. We know

  2246. that you're

  2247. powerful,

  2248. we know

  2249. that you're

  2250. strong,

  2251. we know

  2252. that you're

  2253. able,

  2254. you're

  2255. victorious,

  2256. that's what

  2257. the cross

  2258. declares,

  2259. victory over

  2260. sin and

  2261. death.

  2262. God,

  2263. make that

  2264. a reality

  2265. for us.

  2266. Lead us,

  2267. lead us

  2268. to righteousness

  2269. and holiness

  2270. and purity.

  2271. May we

  2272. represent you

  2273. in this

  2274. world.

  2275. Do a

  2276. work for

  2277. us that

  2278. we cannot

  2279. do for

  2280. ourselves.

  2281. And we

  2282. praise you

  2283. for this

  2284. remembrance

  2285. that helps

  2286. us to

  2287. recall

  2288. your power,

  2289. your ability.

  2290. And so we

  2291. praise you

  2292. in Jesus'

  2293. name.

  2294. Amen.

  2295. God's

  2296. Thank you.

  2297. Thank you.

  2298. Thank you.

  2299. Thank you.

  2300. Thank you.

  2301. Thank you.

  2302. Thank you.

  2303. Thank you.

  2304. Thank you.

2305. Let's remember him as we take this morning.

  2306. And the cup.

2307. The cup is the fullness of who Christ is.

2308. This is his expression of death and the penalty of sin.

  2309. Let's distribute this.

  2310. Thank you.

  2311. Thank you.

  2312. Thank you.

  2313. Thank you.

  2314. Thank you.

  2315. Thank you.

  2316. Thank you.

  2317. Thank you.

  2318. Thank you.

  2319. Thank you.

  2320. Thank you.

2321. And if you don't, it's a judgment that you will one day experience for yourself.

  2322. Separation from God.

  2323. Death forever.

2324. This morning as we consider the cup and all that Christ did, let's remember what he did for us on the cross to pay the penalty for sin.

  2325. Let's drink together.

2326. Lord, we praise you for the bread, for the cup, for this time of remembrance, what it does for us in exalting you in our minds.

2327. Helping us to savor you, who you are and what you have done.

2328. We praise you, God, in Jesus' name.

  2329. Amen.

  2330. Amen.

  2331. Amen.

  2332. Sing together.

2333. The mystery of the cross I cannot comprehend.

  2334. The agonies of Calvary.

2335. You, the perfect Holy One, cross your side.

2336. You drink the bitter cup reserved for me.

2337. Your blood has washed away my sin.

  2338. Jesus, thank you.

2339. The Father's wrath completely satisfied.

  2340. Jesus, thank you.
