  1. Turn in your Bibles this morning to John 13.

  2. We are stepping into a new phase of the gospel of John 13.

  3. ! Chapter 1-12 in some sense would give you a kind of an opening picture and then would expand it more.

  4. Giving you a little statement or a little event that took place in Christ's ministry

  5. and then kind of opening it up to help you understand more about the heart and character of Christ.

  6. What's going to happen from 13 to 19 is that that order of starting small and getting bigger

  7. is going to be reversed in that from 13 to 19 the focus of the gospel is going to keep on coming back

  8. towards Christ and the cross.

  9. I think sometimes we miss how central the cross is.

  10. How important it is for us to get our head around the reality of Christ dying for us and in our place.

  11. John doesn't want us to miss that.

  12. And so if you would begin with me in John chapter 13,

    John 13 chapter mention

  13. let me begin reading at least to kind of frame your thinking there in verse 1.

  14. Now before the feast of the Passover,

  15. when Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father,

  16. having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

  17. During the supper,

  18. when the devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot Simon's son to betray Him,

  19. Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands

  20. and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper.

  21. He laid aside His outer garments and taking a towel, tied it around His waist.

  22. Then He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet

  23. and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.

  24. Let me point out to you this morning

  25. that one of the key pieces of information that we need to hold on to

  26. in our lives on a regular basis

  27. is the love of Christ.

  28. I think about the passage just for a moment back in Ephesians chapter 3

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  29. and if you were to ask me

  30. what would be one of the more important passages

  31. that I can hold on to

  32. and rely on to be a comfort,

  33. an encouragement,

  34. an instruction,

  35. a guide to me,

  36. I would say it's this passage in Ephesians chapter 3

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  37. where the apostle says,

  38. listen, here's my prayer.

  39. Here's the thing that I'm interested in

  40. that you might be able to comprehend with all the saints

  41. what is the breadth and height and width and depth of the love of Christ

  42. so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

  43. Well, I have to tell you that understanding the love of Christ

  44. is not something that you can do without information.

  45. Does that make sense?

  46. You can't love Him if you don't know Him

  47. and you can't love Him

  48. if you don't understand the heart that He has.

  49. And so as you look at this passage,

  50. I want you to realize that

  51. it drives home the point

  52. that we find there

  53. in verse 1.

  54. Now, do you like the fact that John kind of tells us up ahead

  55. what's going to happen?

  56. How many of you remember going to class

  57. and the first thing that happened in the class

  58. after the professor or the teacher

  59. introduced himself and wrote his name on the chalkboard?

  60. Well, those are the good old days, right?

  61. They don't do it that way anymore.

  62. But the teacher said,

  63. I am Bubba and I am here

  64. to see that you get smarter

  65. and I'm going to tell you up front

  66. how this class is going to go.

  67. Here are the homework assignments.

  68. Here are the days that the test is going to happen.

  69. And when it's all done,

  70. you've got this information packed in, right?

  71. Here's the apostle that says,

  72. here's what I want you to understand.

  73. Here's what I want you to understand.

  74. Jesus, having loved His own who were in the world,

  75. He loved them to the end.

  76. And so as we open up this passage

  77. and begin to appreciate it in our own hearts and lives,

  78. here's the thing I want you to comprehend

  79. and plead with the Holy Spirit

  80. that you will not be distracted

  81. from the discipline of thinking carefully

  82. and deeply about the love of Christ for you.

  83. Well, let's get into the text and understand,

  84. first of all, what we see is that

  85. this is a love that is faithful and tender.

  86. John sets the stage in our lesson

  87. by explaining that here we are dealing

  88. with the setting of the Last Supper.

  89. Without overplaying the details of this,

  90. I want you to understand that

  91. we are actually talking about the Last Supper

  92. prior to His crucifixion.

  93. It's not a Last Supper.

  94. It is the Last Supper.

  95. And it is the Last Supper

  96. that He is going to partake with His disciples.

  97. And in that context,

  98. we're going to find not only that

  99. it was a supper that really celebrated

  100. the fact of His coming sacrifice for us,

  101. but it was also a supper

  102. that was profoundly instructive.

  103. I want you to imagine that here is Jesus

  104. that is caught up in teaching His disciples

  105. critically important things.

  106. And in this context of talking about His death

  107. and reminding them of the fact

  108. that He was going to be sacrificed for them,

  109. that there was a new covenant

  110. that was in the frame,

  111. He also does something that is very,

  112. very surprising in that He washes the feet

  113. of His disciples.

  114. I think these facts come together

  115. and are well understood under the frame

  116. of the fact that He loved His own

  117. and He loved them to the end.

  118. It's against this backdrop of the cross

  119. that we really see this picture of love

  120. that we may be tempted to kind of skip over

  121. and get caught on the big details

  122. and not really see the overarching truth.

  123. As we take up the theme of the love of Christ,

  124. one of the things that I want you to understand here

  125. is that Christ's love lasts forever.

  126. Look at what it says there again in verse 1.

  127. It says,

  128. Having loved His own who were in the world,

  129. He loved them to the end.

  130. You know, truth of the matter is,

  131. we're okay at loving people who love us.

  132. Isn't that right?

  133. Really?

  134. I remember talking with one young man

  135. that was quite interested in finding a future wife.

  136. And there's nothing better than coming to a pastor,

  137. you know, a marriage broker that I am.

  138. Ha!

  139. He wanted my advice on this process.

  140. And I actually,

  141. I had the lack of wisdom

  142. to suggest an individual to him.

  143. It was one of my only mistakes

  144. that I've made in the last ha.

  145. But I remember suggesting

  146. that he contact such and such an individual.

  147. And I thought this person

  148. was an entirely credible candidate.

  149. I knew the person's character

  150. and I was without hesitation

  151. ready to recommend this individual.

  152. Went out with the individual one time

  153. and after that I said,

  154. So how'd it go?

  155. And he said this,

  156. on to the next interview.

  157. And I thought,

  158. What?

  159. We're not bad

  160. at kind of loving those who love us

  161. and loving those who kind of meet our criteria

  162. and our frame.

  163. I want you to understand

  164. that the depth of Christ's love

  165. is seen not only in this matter

  166. of a lasting love,

  167. but also a love that really cared about

  168. the details and the depth of the needs

  169. of his disciples.

  170. Here we are at the Lord's Supper.

  171. And I want you to understand

  172. that in that frame,

  173. he takes the time to explain

  174. several very, very important truths

  175. for us to hold on to.

  176. You see, here is Jesus making it clear

  177. that his love never changes.

  178. It never changes.

  179. It never changes.

  180. Knowing what he did about Judas

  181. and what was coming,

  182. I want you to recognize the fact

  183. that it was not the kind of environment

  184. or circumstance in which you would follow through

  185. and really, truly love that kind of person.

  186. You may be a little vindictive towards him,

  187. or at the very least,

  188. you just kind of cut him off and say,

  189. On to the next interview, right?

  190. We've got another one.

  191. It's all done.

  192. Judas is gone.

  193. And here is Jesus tenderly loving

  194. the chief of sinners.

  195. I want you to think with me just for a moment

  196. of what all Jesus knew about Judas' heart.

  197. If you were to work your way back into John,

  198. you'll remember one of the things

  199. that says about Jesus is that

  200. he knew what was in men's hearts.

  201. On occasion,

  202. he knew what people were arguing among themselves about

  203. even when he was removed from their presence.

  204. He knew what the Pharisees were thinking.

  205. And so it is safe to assume,

  206. accurately, I believe,

  207. that he knew exactly what Judas was involved in

  208. and what his heart was like.

  209. And so here is that dishonest,

  210. wicked heart of Judas

  211. that could claim no ignorance

  212. in his determination to deny

  213. and to betray Christ.

  214. And here in the middle of the flow

  215. of the last hours that Jesus has,

  216. we find him doing something

  217. that strikes us as unusual.

  218. You see, here is Jesus

  219. who is faithful in his love for Judas

  220. and he can be trusted to love you as well.

  221. Does that make sense?

  222. If Jesus would love Judas

  223. as vile and as wicked

  224. as what he was going to be engaged in

  225. and knowing all about Judas' heart,

  226. if Jesus was willing to love him,

  227. he's going to love me

  228. and he's going to love you.

  229. Tender.

  230. Faithful.

  231. There's something else

  232. that I want you to mark here

  233. in John chapter 13, verse 3 and 4.

    John 13:3

  234. We find that Jesus' ministry

  235. was one that was saving and sanctifying.

  236. Look, let me read it.

  237. Jesus, knowing that the Father

  238. had given all things into his hand

  239. and that he'd come from God

  240. and was going to God,

  241. rose from supper.

  242. He laid aside his outer garments

  243. and taking a towel,

  244. he tied it around his waist.

  245. Now, the meals in ancient Palestine

  246. were, particularly when you're talking

  247. about a formal meal,

  248. they were arranged around a low-lying table

  249. and they had couches that people laid on

  250. and were rather reclined and comfortable.

  251. By the way, how many of you know

  252. that the average meal today in America

  253. takes about 18 minutes on the high side?

  254. Now, you know,

  255. how many of you have been anxious

  256. about what's going to happen

  257. after the supper

  258. and you find out that it's done bang?

  259. Now, dishes is a different story.

  260. In the ancient world,

  261. meals were social events

  262. and they talked

  263. and they went about it slowly

  264. and there was one course after another

  265. and just a very slow pedestrian approach

  266. and here is the meal going on

  267. and Jesus gets up.

  268. By the way, when Jesus got up,

  269. guess what every eye did?

  270. What's up?

  271. And then he takes a towel

  272. and ties it around his waist.

  273. Now, that was curious.

  274. I mean, I bet you some of the disciples

  275. were beginning to feel just a little nervous

  276. because towels and saviors,

  277. I mean, you know,

  278. hard to fit together.

  279. But then look what happens.

  280. Then he poured water into a basin

  281. and began to wash the disciples' feet

  282. and wiped them with the towel

  283. that was wrapped around him.

  284. By washing feet,

  285. Jesus taught several lessons.

  286. In order to understand these lessons,

  287. there are several things

  288. I want you to pick up on.

  289. For one, washing feet

  290. was an expected part of a dinner like this.

  291. Guests didn't arrive in a limo

  292. or get red carpet treatment.

  293. The vast majority of people

  294. in the ancient world

  295. traveled by foot.

  296. And they didn't wear high boots

  297. coming up their calf.

  298. They kind of stomped,

  299. in many cases,

  300. barefooted through the streets

  301. or maybe they had some leather sandals

  302. that,

  303. and by the way,

  304. how many of you know

  305. that sandals are really not good

  306. for keeping all the crud of life out?

  307. And so when people would come

  308. to a dinner

  309. or people would come

  310. to be a guest in your home,

  311. the standard thing was

  312. for you to assign

  313. someone to wash the feet.

  314. By the way,

  315. the streets in the ancient world

  316. were shared

  317. by all.

  318. And not only shared with all,

  319. but also shared

  320. with all the animals

  321. that were part of the ancient world.

  322. You had donkeys,

  323. you had cows,

  324. you had horses,

  325. you had sheep,

  326. and you had goats.

  327. And they contributed

  328. to the biomass

  329. in the path.

  330. I'll never forget

  331. a Christmas program

  332. that Judith and I attended

  333. a number of years ago

  334. in a church

  335. that large church

  336. put on just a slam bang

  337. Christmas program.

  338. And on top of the normal music,

  339. they actually had sheep

  340. that were, you know,

  341. shepherds herded the sheep in.

  342. Somehow or another,

  343. the sheep got nervous.

  344. And they came down,

  345. I don't know,

  346. I would imagine

  347. there should have been

  348. better planning,

  349. but the sheep came down

  350. the center aisle

  351. and they were spitting

  352. all these little pellets

  353. out the back end

  354. of every one of the sheep.

  355. Okay?

  356. And the shepherds

  357. were walking,

  358. they're barefooted,

  359. I mean,

  360. the shepherds are barefooted.

  361. And I,

  362. I mean,

  363. this was a sober moment,

  364. I mean,

  365. you know,

  366. it's a Christmas program

  367. and I am up there

  368. just,

  369. I'll go to my grave

  370. remembering that program.

  371. I don't know

  372. what the gospel

  373. was like that night,

  374. but I'll never forget

  375. the sheep

  376. who left behind

  377. these little tiny

  378. little landmines

  379. and everybody

  380. was really nervous

  381. about what it felt like.

  382. How many of you ever,

  383. no,

  384. I won't go there.

  385. Okay.

  386. No garbage trucks

  387. in the ancient world.

  388. And so,

  389. the pathway

  390. was a cruddy place

  391. to walk.

  392. And washing sheep,

  393. washing feet,

  394. was expected.

  395. I want you to understand

  396. that whoever had organized

  397. that dinner

  398. had a bowl

  399. and pitcher

  400. on site.

  401. Jesus didn't leave the room,

  402. it was there.

  403. And so,

  404. I want you to understand

  405. that as the disciples

  406. came in,

  407. every one of them

  408. saw the pitcher

  409. and the bowl there

  410. and they knew

  411. what normally happened

  412. at a meal.

  413. Jesus had already

  414. repeatedly made

  415. the point to them

  416. that the one

  417. who would be first

  418. would be servant.

  419. The one who would be

  420. servant

  421. was the one

  422. that was important.

  423. And so,

  424. here were the disciples.

  425. I can only imagine,

  426. I don't have any

  427. textual basis

  428. to premise my argument,

  429. but you can kind of imagine

  430. knowing the disciples

  431. were always about

  432. who was first,

  433. they were probably thinking,

  434. well,

  435. somebody ought to wash feet.

  436. I mean,

  437. and it's not me

  438. because the truth of the matter

  439. is I'm going to be number one.

  440. Hey, Peter,

  441. what do you think?

  442. No.

  443. I'm hoping somebody else

  444. will do that.

  445. And so,

  446. here's the bowl

  447. and here's the pitcher.

  448. Peter ought to be doing this,

  449. really.

  450. Do you know how many times

  451. he's put his foot in his mouth?

  452. He at least ought to do something

  453. for other people's feet.

  454. And the bowl

  455. and the pitcher

  456. just sat there

  457. and nobody moved.

  458. It's interesting,

  459. actually,

  460. to recognize

  461. that in the synoptic gospels,

  462. they had been arguing

  463. over and over again

  464. about this issue

  465. of who was number one.

  466. In fact,

  467. keep your finger there

  468. in John.

  469. We're going to come back,

  470. but I just want you to turn

  471. just for a second

  472. to Luke chapter 22,

    Luke 22:24–27

  473. verse 24 through 27.

  474. Hey, have you ever found yourself

  475. just a little discouraged

  476. with your spiritual progress

  477. and development

  478. over the years?

  479. Raise your hand

  480. and wave at me

  481. just so I know

  482. you're with me here, okay?

  483. Don't despair

  484. because if Jesus loved

  485. and kept on working

  486. on the disciples,

  487. he's all over you too.

  488. And here they are.

  489. They're at the Last Supper

  490. and they end up

  491. having a dispute,

  492. verse 24,

  493. among them

  494. as to which of them

  495. was going to be regarded

  496. the greatest.

  497. Bowl and pitcher

  498. right there in front of them.

  499. They're arguing about it.

  500. Beyond that,

  501. going back now to John,

  502. we find here is Jesus

  503. who didn't give up on the 12

  504. and he will not give up on us

  505. as he makes the point to us

  506. You look there in the passage

  507. going back to John 12,

    John 12:13

  508. verse 13.

  509. He starts to wash

  510. the disciples' feet

  511. and as he is washing them,

  512. he comes now to Peter.

  513. And by the way,

  514. if there's anything

  515. you know about Peter,

  516. it's that he was one

  517. who didn't have any hesitation

  518. to say what he was thinking.

  519. Sometimes that really

  520. got him in trouble.

  521. Isn't that right?

  522. Classic illustration today.

  523. Jesus had already washed

  524. several of the disciples' feet

  525. and here we come to Peter

  526. in verse 6.

  527. He came to Simon Peter

  528. who said to him,

  529. Lord, do you wash my feet?

  530. Now, I don't want you

  531. to understand.

  532. It was like,

  533. hey, are you really

  534. going to do mine too?

  535. It was like,

  536. you doing mine?

  537. No.

  538. The underlying implication is

  539. Peter was not interested

  540. in having Christ wash his feet.

  541. Why?

  542. Peter understood

  543. that the responsibility

  544. of washing feet

  545. belonged to the lowest

  546. of the low.

  547. I have a wonderful bride

  548. and I remember

  549. at one point

  550. I had worked pretty hard

  551. and my feet were really hurting.

  552. How many of you

  553. have ever had feet

  554. that hurt bad?

  555. And I asked her

  556. if she would rub my feet.

  557. Okay, she's in the nursery

  558. so she's free

  559. of this conversation.

  560. Don't need to share it

  561. with her.

  562. She said,

  563. there are a lot of things

  564. I'll do for you, honey,

  565. but rubbing feet

  566. is not one of them.

  567. That was earlier

  568. in our marriage.

  569. Now,

  570. I rub her feet

  571. and she rubs my feet

  572. but you know what?

  573. I see it on your faces.

  574. You know,

  575. rubbing feet is kind of

  576. like over the edge,

  577. isn't it?

  578. Try washing them.

  579. When the guy's been

  580. stepping in donkey poop

  581. and, you know,

  582. sheep stuff,

  583. you know,

  584. it's like,

  585. you're kidding.

  586. me.

  587. And here is Jesus

  588. washing feet.

  589. Well, Peter,

  590. when he pushes back,

  591. has Jesus respond

  592. this way in verse 7.

  593. What I'm doing

  594. you do not understand now

  595. but afterward

  596. you will understand.

  597. For most of us

  598. that should have been like,

  599. okay, I get it.

  600. I may not.

  601. How many times

  602. did the disciples

  603. not understand?

  604. Do you follow that?

  605. I think about Jesus

  606. telling one parable

  607. after another

  608. and they'd all sit there

  609. and nod,

  610. you know,

  611. as he was talking,

  612. oh yeah.

  613. But when they got private,

  614. what would they do?

  615. You know,

  616. there's a point

  617. that John didn't get.

  618. Would you go ahead

  619. and help him with this?

  620. And Jesus would explain.

  621. So here is Jesus saying,

  622. Peter,

  623. relax.

  624. You'll understand later.

  625. Oh,

  626. not good enough

  627. for Peter.

  628. Right?

  629. Peter said to him,

  630. you shall never wash my feet.

  631. Jesus answered him,

  632. if I do not wash you,

  633. you have no share with me.

  634. To put it another way,

  635. the washing work of Jesus

  636. is part of relationship with Jesus.

  637. I've got to tell you something.

  638. There are some of you

  639. sitting here today

  640. that I have reason to believe

  641. you've never come to faith.

  642. You don't know Christ

  643. as your personal Savior.

  644. You know some of the vocabulary.

  645. You've enjoyed being under

  646. the umbrella in a sense.

  647. But you've never come to the place

  648. where by faith

  649. you have come with broken humility

  650. and said,

  651. my life is a mess

  652. and I'm a wreck

  653. and I need Christ

  654. to be my Savior.

  655. And here was Peter pushing back

  656. and Jesus made the point.

  657. Let me tell you something.

  658. Apart from being washed

  659. in the blood of Christ,

  660. you have no hope.

  661. Well, there's another distinction

  662. that Jesus makes here

  663. and they're actually

  664. two different washings.

  665. Look at verse 10.

  666. It says,

  667. the one who has bathed

  668. and that's an accurate translation

  669. of the two different Greek words

  670. that John uses

  671. to describe what's taking place.

  672. The one who has bathed

  673. does not need to wash

  674. except his feet,

  675. but is completely clean

  676. and you are clean

  677. but not every one of you.

  678. Now, the point Jesus is making here

  679. because remember what happened

  680. when Jesus said,

  681. hey, listen,

  682. if I don't give you a,

  683. if I don't wash you,

  684. you're not part of me.

  685. Peter says,

  686. well, do me all.

  687. Jesus said, no.

  688. The one who's been bathed,

  689. the one who's been

  690. covered by the blood of Christ

  691. has been saved

  692. and has a relationship,

  693. but here's what happens

  694. in the daily flow of life.

  695. Mess follows.

  696. So let me kind of push

  697. these two different

  698. washings together

  699. so you can see

  700. salvation is the once for all

  701. bathing in the blood of Christ.

  702. And there are some of you

  703. here today

  704. that can remember

  705. what was it like

  706. before you came

  707. to the Lord Jesus,

  708. your heart was dark

  709. and your condition

  710. was absolutely miserable

  711. and you were under

  712. the curse of the law

  713. and you knew

  714. the judgment of God

  715. and yet there came the day

  716. when by faith

  717. you came to Christ

  718. and he washed away

  719. your sins.

  720. What can wash away

  721. my sins?

  722. Nothing.

  723. What?

  724. But the blood of Jesus.

  725. At the same time,

  726. there is a time,

  727. there is a regular time

  728. where we need

  729. the daily washing

  730. of his grace

  731. to deal with our sin

  732. from day to day.

  733. And so if you are here

  734. and have been bathed

  735. in the grace of Christ

  736. and he has drawn you

  737. to faith,

  738. there's no need

  739. to be plunged in again.

  740. I got to tell you,

  741. salvation is a once

  742. for all event.

  743. It's something that happens

  744. by the grace of God

  745. and you are turned

  746. from darkness to light.

  747. You who are not a son

  748. are now a son.

  749. But you still need

  750. to be bathed

  751. on a regular basis

  752. to have the daily issues

  753. of sin

  754. in your life

  755. cared for.

  756. And so here we

  757. understand that Jesus

  758. is teaching us

  759. both the matter

  760. of salvation

  761. that we need

  762. to be saved

  763. by being immersed

  764. in the blood of Christ

  765. and we need

  766. daily cleansing

  767. from the ongoing

  768. battle of our sin.

  769. Let me come to

  770. one other piece

  771. this morning.

  772. Look there at verse 15.

  773. Actually back up

  774. if you will

  775. just for a moment.

  776. Verse 12,

  777. he says,

  778. When he had washed

  779. their feet

  780. and put on

  781. his outer garments

  782. and resumed his place

  783. he said to them,

  784. Do you understand

  785. what I have done to you?

  786. Nobody said a word.

  787. You call me teacher

  788. and Lord

  789. and you're right

  790. for so I am.

  791. If then I,

  792. your Lord and teacher

  793. have washed your feet

  794. you also ought to

  795. wash one another's feet.

  796. For I have given you

  797. an example

  798. that you should do

  799. just as I have done

  800. to you.

  801. I find in this passage

  802. not only a love

  803. that is tender,

  804. not only a love

  805. that is saving

  806. and sanctifying

  807. but also a love

  808. that is instructing

  809. and blessing.

  810. When Jesus

  811. washed his disciples' feet

  812. he was giving us

  813. an example to follow

  814. and I got to make this point

  815. make it gently.

  816. I don't believe

  817. that what it is teaching here

  818. is foot washing

  819. and that every month

  820. or every three months

  821. that we ought to have

  822. a foot washing service.

  823. I think what is being

  824. given to us

  825. is the overarching

  826. illustration of the fact

  827. that the common

  828. characteristic

  829. of believers

  830. is to be humility

  831. and servanthood.

  832. And here Jesus

  833. is saying

  834. if I'm willing

  835. to be this kind

  836. of servant

  837. you have to be willing

  838. to do the same thing.

  839. What Jesus did

  840. in washing dirty feet

  841. calls us to follow him

  842. and to serve

  843. in lowliness

  844. and humility.

  845. The common

  846. characteristic

  847. of believers

  848. that are walking

  849. with Christ

  850. is to be

  851. a regular

  852. willingness

  853. to be used

  854. for the glory

  855. of the kingdom.

  856. Serving one another.

  857. I appreciate

  858. actually being

  859. in a fellowship

  860. that we enjoy here

  861. where when we ask

  862. for help

  863. we end up

  864. with an abundance

  865. of individuals

  866. engaged in doing it

  867. and we're continuing

  868. to grow at that.

  869. All last week

  870. and for the remaining

  871. four weeks

  872. we will be

  873. serving

  874. Franklin County

  875. Board of Elections

  876. Training Ministry.

  877. Every person

  878. who has interacted

  879. with their staff

  880. from our fellowship

  881. will tell you

  882. the same thing.

  883. They like

  884. being here.

  885. Do you know why?

  886. Because

  887. when they are here

  888. they are served

  889. without hesitation

  890. and with kindness

  891. and joy.

  892. by the way

  893. servanthood

  894. opens the door

  895. for gospel ministry

  896. do you understand that?

  897. And God

  898. is giving us

  899. one opportunity

  900. after another

  901. to do that.

  902. Here is Jesus

  903. washing dirty feet

  904. and calling you

  905. to be a servant

  906. like He is.

  907. Let me look

  908. at another part

  909. here

  910. just for a moment.

  911. Look down there

  912. at verse 17.

  913. By the way

  914. this is a little verse

  915. that is worth

  916. remembering

  917. memorizing

  918. and etching

  919. on to

  920. your life.

  921. Let me read it

  922. slowly.

  923. If you know

  924. these things

  925. blessed are you

  926. if you do them.

  927. Now

  928. important to understand

  929. this

  930. there are two

  931. different kinds

  932. of blessings.

  933. blessings.

  934. Okay?

  935. Bless you

  936. my child.

  937. I gave you

  938. $100,000.

  939. That's a blessing.

  940. Bless you.

  941. I'm going to

  942. give you something.

  943. I'm going to

  944. do something

  945. for you.

  946. I'm going to

  947. load you up

  948. with something

  949. that's good.

  950. Blessing.

  951. There's a different

  952. kind of blessing.

  953. This word here

  954. that's used

  955. is the word

  956. makarios.

  957. else.

  958. In the English

  959. language

  960. it's actually

  961. the word

  962. happy.

  963. Hey

  964. who here

  965. would like

  966. to be unhappy

  967. in a permanent

  968. funk?

  969. Just

  970. try it

  971. so you can

  972. get a feel

  973. for it.

  974. Here's what

  975. I want you

  976. to do.

  977. Frown.

  978. Just frown

  979. for a second.

  980. You're doing it.

  981. Some of you

  982. are pretty

  983. practiced.

  984. I got it.

  985. Here's what

  986. Jesus says.

  987. You want

  988. to be happy?

  989. Yeah.

  990. I had a

  991. chance

  992. last week

  993. to talk to

  994. a guy

  995. about the

  996. Lord.

  997. So what

  998. do you

  999. want out

  1000. of life?

  1001. Here's what

  1002. he said.

  1003. I want

  1004. to be

  1005. happy.

  1006. Well

  1007. who

  1008. doesn't?

  1009. You

  1010. want to

  1011. be happy?

  1012. Here's what

  1013. Jesus said.

  1014. Look at it.

  1015. Verse 17.

  1016. If you

  1017. know these

  1018. things.

  1019. By the

  1020. way,

  1021. what things

  1022. is he

  1023. talking about

  1024. in this

  1025. case?

  1026. He's

  1027. talking about

  1028. serving people,

  1029. washing feet,

  1030. wiping doo-doo

  1031. out from

  1032. between the

  1033. toes.

  1034. I mean,

  1035. he's talking

  1036. about really

  1037. getting into

  1038. it.

  1039. Do you

  1040. follow that?

  1041. Come on.

  1042. I'm not

  1043. trying to be

  1044. crude.

  1045. Just to

  1046. help you

  1047. understand.

  1048. It was

  1049. pretty low

  1050. life work.

  1051. Happiness

  1052. comes from

  1053. knowing

  1054. Jesus

  1055. and

  1056. obeying

  1057. him.

  1058. There's

  1059. some of

  1060. you here

  1061. today that

  1062. actually spend

  1063. a fair

  1064. amount of

  1065. your time

  1066. being pretty

  1067. unhappy.

  1068. That is

  1069. normal for

  1070. a person who

  1071. doesn't know

  1072. Christ.

  1073. Do you

  1074. follow that?

  1075. How many of

  1076. you remember

  1077. just how

  1078. unhappy it

  1079. was being

  1080. an unrepentant,

  1081. unregenerate,

  1082. hell-bound

  1083. sinner?

  1084. Does anybody

  1085. remember what

  1086. it was like?

  1087. Yeah,

  1088. it's miserable.

  1089. And if you

  1090. are here

  1091. today and

  1092. you do

  1093. not know

  1094. Christ,

  1095. happiness

  1096. is a

  1097. fantasy and

  1098. it will

  1099. never have

  1100. a permanent

  1101. impression or

  1102. place in

  1103. your life.

  1104. Why?

  1105. Because one

  1106. of the things

  1107. it says

  1108. repeatedly in

  1109. the book

  1110. of Isaiah

  1111. is there

  1112. is no

  1113. rest for

  1114. the wicked.

  1115. There are

  1116. some of you

  1117. here who

  1118. have known

  1119. the happiness

  1120. and the

  1121. freedom that

  1122. comes with

  1123. forgiveness and

  1124. having had

  1125. your sins

  1126. washed away

  1127. by the

  1128. blood of

  1129. Christ,

  1130. but you

  1131. have fallen

  1132. prey to

  1133. the enemy

  1134. of your

  1135. soul who

  1136. has misled

  1137. you to

  1138. think that

  1139. service and

  1140. being like

  1141. Christ are

  1142. not important.

  1143. unhappiness

  1144. flows down

  1145. the channel

  1146. of being a

  1147. self-focused

  1148. person.

  1149. Can I say

  1150. that slowly

  1151. so you

  1152. don't miss

  1153. it?

  1154. Unhappiness

  1155. flows down

  1156. the channel

  1157. of being a

  1158. self-focused

  1159. person.

  1160. Again,

  1161. just so you

  1162. don't miss

  1163. it.

  1164. Unhappiness

  1165. flows down

  1166. the channel

  1167. of being a

  1168. self-focused

  1169. person.

  1170. Let me read

  1171. the verse

  1172. again.

  1173. If you

  1174. know these

  1175. things,

  1176. blessed are

  1177. you if you

  1178. do them.

  1179. in summary,

  1180. with the

  1181. cross right

  1182. in front

  1183. of him,

  1184. in the

  1185. flow of

  1186. the last

  1187. supper,

  1188. Jesus

  1189. uses

  1190. washing

  1191. feet

  1192. to show

  1193. incredible

  1194. love for

  1195. the greatest

  1196. and vilest

  1197. of sinner

  1198. to confirm

  1199. to anyone

  1200. who is

  1201. here,

  1202. if Jesus

  1203. could love

  1204. Judas,

  1205. he can

  1206. love you.

  1207. And he

  1208. used

  1209. washing

  1210. feet

  1211. to teach

  1212. us that

  1213. happiness

  1214. comes

  1215. from being

  1216. humble

  1217. and being

  1218. willing to

  1219. serve.

  1220. Why?

  1221. because I

  1222. get to be

  1223. a little

  1224. bit like

  1225. Jesus.

  1226. Let's

  1227. pray.

  1228. Father,

  1229. you who

  1230. abide in

  1231. heaven,

  1232. who know

  1233. the frailty

  1234. of our

  1235. hearts,

  1236. and know

  1237. the need

  1238. of our

  1239. soul,

  1240. have

  1241. blessed

  1242. us beyond

  1243. measure

  1244. in sending

  1245. the Lord

  1246. Jesus to

  1247. be our

  1248. Savior,

  1249. to be our

  1250. teacher,

  1251. to be our

  1252. Lord.

  1253. And there's

  1254. some here

  1255. today that

  1256. need Jesus

  1257. as their

  1258. Savior,

  1259. and I

  1260. would plead

  1261. with you

  1262. that you

  1263. would convict

  1264. their heart

  1265. and challenge

  1266. them to

  1267. lay aside

  1268. their pride

  1269. and confess

  1270. their sins

  1271. and believe

  1272. in Jesus.

  1273. There's some

  1274. here today

  1275. that know

  1276. Christ as

  1277. their Savior,

  1278. but have

  1279. allowed

  1280. sin to

  1281. creep in

  1282. and need

  1283. the washing

  1284. ministry of

  1285. your word

  1286. and spirit

  1287. to be

  1288. revived,

  1289. to be

  1290. restored,

  1291. to find

  1292. pleasure in

  1293. being a

  1294. servant of

  1295. the living

  1296. God.

  1297. And our

  1298. plea is that

  1299. you would be

  1300. honored among

  1301. your people

  1302. this morning.

  1303. We ask in

  1304. Jesus' name.

  1305. Amen.

  1306. Let's stand.
