  1. Let me begin. I want to ask a question that I want you to think about carefully.

  2. ! And I'm not asking for you to respond. In fact, I'd prefer you don't.

  3. But just think to yourself, this is the question.

  4. What do I really want the most?

  5. What do I really want the most?

  6. Put it another way, what's most important to me?

  7. What's really most important?

  8. What do I want?

  9. What's most important?

  10. As you think about this, here are some things that may help you recognize,

  11. whether you'd like to admit it or not, what the answer is.

  12. What makes you most happy?

  13. What really just lights your fire?

  14. That you're happy about.

  15. What do you care about so much that you really don't have to be prompted to talk about it?

  16. What are things that get you very irritated?

  17. I mean, fire you up.

  18. I want to confess that different ones of us have been hardwired by God to be fired up in moderately different fashions.

  19. Do you follow what I'm saying?

  20. I mean, some people are very public in their fired up-ness.

  21. Other people are kind of like a slow burn.

  22. They're like a coke fire.

  23. They're hot.

  24. But inside.

  25. What does your moodiness say about what's important?

  26. What causes you to have recurring bouts of anxiety?

  27. Do you know what I'm talking about, anxiety?

  28. It's circling the drain on an idea that you really don't have control over.

  29. Let me come back again to ask you the question here.

  30. What do I really want the most?

  31. What is it that is most important to me?

  32. Now, let me say that if you were to ask the average person on the street, what do you want the most?

  33. What's most important?

  34. Do you know what most people would say?

  35. What would they say?

  36. Tell me.

  37. I just want to be happy.

  38. I wouldn't immediately give the guy the smackdown over that.

  39. I mean, I'm glad.

  40. I appreciate the fact that the individual who'd tell me they really want to be happy didn't at least be so simplistic to say,

  41. I want a million dollars.

  42. I have to tell you that I have added something to my repertoire.

  43. How many of you know that when you call some of these service lines, help lines, at the end of the conversation,

  44. they always say, the last thing they say is, can I help you with anything else?

  45. Right?

  46. I mean, it's always the same thing.

  47. Can I help you with anything else?

  48. And my standard answer right now has been yes.

  49. Of course, there's a long pause, and I wait just for a minute to let them think what's coming next, and I say, free cash.

  50. You know, it's like, it hasn't worked.

  51. But let's come back to the issue.

  52. I want to be happy.

  53. I really do.

  54. Now, if you were to ask any child that has been instructed in the shorter catechism,

  55. what is the chief end of man?

  56. How many of you know?

  57. Raise your hand and wave at me if you know what the answer is to the first question in the shorter catechism.

  58. Raise your hand high.

  59. I want it this high, like this.

  60. Some of you...

  61. Here, watch me.

  62. Like this.

  63. Okay.

  64. Got it?

  65. Okay.

  66. It's all right.

  67. What is the chief end of man?

  68. It is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

  69. What is the chief end of man?

  70. It is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

  71. John Piper, in his knockout book, Desiring God, that I would recommend you read if you're inclined to a little bit of sober labor of exceptional worth,

  72. he kind of runs away.

  73. It doesn't run away, but he kind of changes the tack a little bit on that.

  74. He says, the chief end of man is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever.

  75. So, I want you to think with me this morning of what John chapter 13, 31, and 32 have to say to this subject.

    John 13 chapter mention

  76. Let me read a passage to you.

  77. When he had gone out, Jesus said,

  78. Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

  79. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and glorify him at once.

  80. Now, it's not entirely true in every case, but as a general rule, when a word is repeated fairly often, there's a reason.

  81. And it wouldn't hurt us to think, why does the Holy Spirit have so much to say about this subject of glory?

  82. And so, what I want us to do this morning is take these two verses and think carefully about the incredible significance of the cross.

  83. And I want to draw several powerful truths from the fact of these two verses and then bring some practical application to your life so that in the future,

  84. if someone would say to you, what do you really want?

  85. You would say, I want the glory of God.

  86. And I can tell you by personal experience, you won't get there without persistent affection for the Lord Jesus Christ and a deliberate intention to move there.

  87. Because guess how we're naturally wired?

  88. How many of you have a lot of trouble really thinking about yourself occasionally?

  89. You know, just every now and then someone has to bump you and say,

  90. Tim, are you ever thinking about yourself?

  91. You're so wonderful thinking about everybody else.

  92. You know, I haven't had that happen.

  93. But, you know, we want to learn to think about the glory of Christ and the Father.

  94. And this passage hammers it.

  95. So, let's look first of all at the glory of the cross.

  96. And since we're going to spend so much time dealing with the subject of glory, and it's not a word we use very often.

  97. How many of you used glory this last week?

  98. You said, oh, glory.

  99. You didn't.

  100. I've got to tell you, Pastor Brock, who's in heaven, he used glory fairly often.

  101. Anytime something happened wrong, he would say, oh, glory.

  102. When I was a member, I remember hearing him say, oh, glory, over some problem.

  103. He was like, what?

  104. But for the most part, you and I don't use, oh, glory.

  105. We don't talk about glory.

  106. We think a lot about it, but we don't talk enough about it.

  107. The idea of glory, the word glory, really carries with it the idea of worth, significance, honor, reputation.

  108. If you were kind of tracking with the different songs we sang this morning, they had a lot to do with glory.

  109. And the biblical word is most often connected with character, not just with events.

  110. And as a reference to that, we will see that when the word is used in Scripture, it is speaking invariably about God and things he's done.

  111. But behind that is not just the act of what he has done, but what it tells us about his nature and his heart.

  112. So kind of mark this in your thinking.

  113. The word glory is about honor, worth, and significance.

  114. And the most common use of the word glory in Scripture is really used in connection with our triune God.

  115. One theologian put it this way, that the word glory is a word that speaks of God in such a fashion that glorifying God means calling attention to his greatness

  116. and showing his supreme value by delighting in him and cherishing in him.

  117. Glorifying God means drawing attention or marking his supreme greatness.

  118. Let me give you an illustration of that.

  119. Over in Matthew chapter 5, remember when Jesus said,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  120. You are the salt of the earth, you're the light of the world.

  121. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works.

  122. And they say, wow, God is pretty spectacular.

  123. Right?

  124. So there is a sense in which one of the things that we ought to always be thinking about is how does this make God look?

  125. Look, we have had the privilege of hosting Franklin County Board of Election for five weeks in this building.

  126. And I have to tell you that every interaction that our people have had,

  127. whether it's an Awana worker coming in here early to work on Awana on Monday night,

  128. or one of our ladies walking through the lobby,

  129. or someone doing custodial work,

  130. or one of our pastors,

  131. the consistent thing that has taken place is that you as a fellowship have shown kindness

  132. and a sweet disposition to all those people.

  133. Hundreds of them have come through here.

  134. They invited me to go to their honors banquet because of you.

  135. I don't want to go.

  136. I'm going to send one of the pastors.

  137. I shouldn't say that.

  138. But I am not a social animal.

  139. I wasn't born for that.

  140. You know, it's like, but I'll go, you know.

  141. Let your light so shine before men that they will see your good works and what?

  142. Glorify your Father.

  143. Your heart, affected by the glory of God,

  144. has displayed a kindness that has been so exceptional.

  145. That's the common conversation I've heard from hundreds of people the last five weeks.

  146. And so when we think this morning about this issue of glory,

  147. I want you to understand that it means calling attention to His greatness

  148. and showing a supreme value.

  149. Why did we host Franklin County Board of Elections?

  150. At the heart of it is because we are here to show the character and heart of Christ.

  151. Isn't that right?

  152. That's why we did what we did on Monday night.

  153. That's why we're doing the food drive.

  154. We are interested in having other people have an opportunity

  155. to see the character of our God and our Savior.

  156. So here we are in verse 31.

  157. Judas has gone out into the night to betray Jesus and bring about His crucifixion.

  158. Knowing that the cross was only hours away,

  159. here is Jesus now with the remaining disciples,

  160. and here's what He says.

  161. Look at the verse there in 31.

  162. When He'd gone out, Jesus said,

  163. Now!

  164. This is it!

  165. Now is the Son of Man glorified!

  166. Can you imagine that?

  167. Against the backdrop of that brutal rendering of His body,

  168. the absolute vile betrayal of one of His own disciples,

  169. Jesus Christ called the cross the moment of His glory.

  170. Incidentally, He referred to Himself here in this statement as the Son of Man.

  171. He was pointing to His humanity,

  172. which He has taken on for all of eternity,

  173. for the glory of the Father,

  174. and for our redemption.

  175. And here He is looking forward to the cross,

  176. and He says,

  177. Now is the Son of Man glorified.

  178. It's interesting to stop just for a moment

  179. and consider

  180. that He referred to no other aspect of His human existence that way.

  181. I can think of.

  182. There had certainly been moments in His public ministry

  183. that were pretty glorious.

  184. I mean, can you imagine

  185. the glory of Him cleansing the temple?

  186. My Father's house is a house of prayer,

  187. and you have made it a den of thieves,

  188. and it is time for me to bring smack down on you.

  189. And how one man could clean out,

  190. just imagine,

  191. someone stomping in to the Supreme Court

  192. and the White House at the same time

  193. and cleaning both of them,

  194. one guy with nothing but a little whip.

  195. I have to tell you,

  196. the thing that terrified people

  197. was not the strength of Christ,

  198. but the character and holiness of His calling.

  199. And He, that was pretty glorious,

  200. I would think.

  201. He didn't call it that way.

  202. Another thing that I think about is,

  203. remember,

  204. when He was baptized,

  205. remember He came out of the water,

  206. and we have the dove come down,

  207. and we have the voice of God,

  208. and it says,

  209. this is my beloved Son

  210. in whom I am well pleased.

  211. Listen to Him.

  212. That's pretty spectacular.

  213. I mean, how many of you have had God

  214. say something like that

  215. after your baptism?

  216. No.

  217. Terrify me if it did.

  218. And it won't.

  219. Let's try another one.

  220. The transfiguration.

  221. I mean, that was pretty spectacular.

  222. In fact, if you were to read

  223. in the Apostles' Epistles,

  224. well, that's a word full, isn't it?

  225. The Apostles' Epistles.

  226. Don't go there.

  227. But in Peter,

  228. remember when He says,

  229. we beheld His glory.

  230. When He was on the Mount

  231. of Transfiguration,

  232. it wiped Him out.

  233. We beheld His glory.

  234. Did Jesus refer to the transfiguration

  235. as the moment of His glory?

  236. No.

  237. He says this.

  238. He says,

  239. now,

  240. the cross,

  241. that's my hour

  242. of glory.

  243. I can't help,

  244. and I debate whether I should or not,

  245. and here I go.

  246. So, I remember years ago

  247. when Mel Gibson came out

  248. with his, you know,

  249. what was that movie?

  250. I'm forgetting.

  251. The Passion.

  252. Okay.

  253. And pretty spectacular.

  254. I remember someone got up

  255. in Cedarville Chapel

  256. and said,

  257. and I heard this by way of rumors,

  258. so I don't know it to be firsthand,

  259. but someone said,

  260. this was going to be

  261. the most significant

  262. evangelistic event

  263. since Pentecost.

  264. How many of you know

  265. what hyperbole is?

  266. Jared?

  267. Over-exaggeration.

  268. It's like,

  269. hello?

  270. Anyway,

  271. I,

  272. the Passion of the Christ

  273. kind of made clear

  274. that he suffered,

  275. but I got to tell you,

  276. the suffering of Jesus

  277. is not the thing

  278. that brought glory

  279. to his name.

  280. I heard,

  281. I read on the internet,

  282. of course,

  283. everything you read

  284. on the internet

  285. is true,

  286. but I heard on the internet

  287. that Morocco,

  288. a fish,

  289. fisherman,

  290. was put through

  291. a grinder.

  292. That's pretty spectacular,

  293. right?

  294. You know,

  295. it's like,

  296. yuck,

  297. bad.

  298. Jesus suffered,

  299. but the thing that is glorious

  300. is not his suffering

  301. particularly.

  302. The thing that is spectacular

  303. about Christ

  304. is all of the above.

  305. And as we read there

  306. in verse 32,

  307. and skip ahead,

  308. it says,

  309. now is the Son of Man glorified

  310. and God is glorified in him.

  311. Okay?

  312. What we understand,

  313. actually the latter part of 31

  314. is what I meant to say,

  315. we understand that Jesus

  316. saw the cross

  317. not only as the means

  318. of his glory,

  319. but he also saw the cross

  320. as the means

  321. of his Father's glory.

  322. Jesus brought glory

  323. to his Father

  324. by dying on the cross

  325. for our sins.

  326. And that is what is meant

  327. when the text says

  328. God is glorified in him.

  329. Jesus understood

  330. that his perfect

  331. and willing obedience

  332. to the Father

  333. glorified the Father.

  334. Father.

  335. And I wonder

  336. whether or not

  337. you think about the cross

  338. first and foremost

  339. as being something

  340. that glorifies Christ.

  341. Think about it.

  342. Most of us,

  343. when we think about the cross,

  344. our first thought

  345. is to bring ourself

  346. into the frame.

  347. You know,

  348. hey,

  349. the cross

  350. is tremendously

  351. significant to me,

  352. right?

  353. Were it not for the cross,

  354. I would be a sinner

  355. directly on my way

  356. to hell

  357. and have no hope

  358. of redemption

  359. lost forever.

  360. I did a funeral

  361. on Friday

  362. that was

  363. a wonderful

  364. gospel opportunity,

  365. but it broke my heart.

  366. The sorrow

  367. in that room

  368. was palpable.

  369. It was just,

  370. it was there.

  371. And were it not

  372. for the fact

  373. that I had

  374. the sweet privilege,

  375. by the way,

  376. funerals are

  377. captive audiences

  378. for me.

  379. Do you understand that?

  380. I'll take any funeral

  381. you throw my way.

  382. Any funeral.

  383. So long as I get

  384. to be free

  385. with the gospel.

  386. And here,

  387. I can say to people

  388. whose hearts

  389. are broken

  390. in the face of death,

  391. there is only

  392. one hope

  393. for you

  394. and it's Jesus Christ

  395. who died on the cross

  396. and rose again.

  397. And so here is Jesus

  398. as he looks

  399. towards the cross,

  400. he looks

  401. at that event

  402. and he says,

  403. this is it.

  404. Now I'm going to give you

  405. a summary

  406. of the Bible.

  407. Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3:15

  408. verse 15,

  409. remember when

  410. God shows up

  411. in the garden

  412. and is talking

  413. to two individuals,

  414. Adam and Eve

  415. and he brings

  416. the snake

  417. into the conversation

  418. and he says,

  419. listen,

  420. he will crush

  421. your head

  422. and you will

  423. bruise his heel.

  424. It is called

  425. proto-evangelism.

  426. The first

  427. indication

  428. of the gospel.

  429. And how does

  430. the story end

  431. over in Revelation

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  432. chapter 5?

  433. what we find

  434. there is this

  435. just absolutely

  436. wonderful picture

  437. of the glory

  438. of Christ

  439. in heaven.

  440. And as people

  441. are worshiping

  442. God in chapter 4

  443. of Revelation

  444. and Christ

  445. in chapter 5,

  446. do you know

  447. how they address

  448. Jesus over and over

  449. again in chapter 5?

  450. What do they say?

  451. Worthy is the

  452. lamb.

  453. I don't know

  454. about you

  455. but that gives me

  456. cold chills.

  457. I like to know

  458. that the story

  459. didn't happen

  460. just kind of

  461. like a warm night

  462. and mushrooms

  463. popping up.

  464. God put a lot

  465. of thought

  466. into this

  467. and pulled it

  468. off over

  469. millenniums.

  470. And here is

  471. Jesus

  472. looking at the

  473. cross

  474. as the moment

  475. in history

  476. where the plan

  477. of redemption

  478. ordained by

  479. the Father

  480. and the Son

  481. and the Holy Spirit

  482. before the foundation

  483. of the world

  484. was coming

  485. into full fruition

  486. and evidence.

  487. Now notice

  488. what we read

  489. in verse 32.

  490. If God is glorified

  491. in Him

  492. God will glorify

  493. Him

  494. in Himself.

  495. How many of you

  496. just don't raise

  497. your hands

  498. but a question

  499. how many of you

  500. have struggled

  501. with giving glory

  502. to other people?

  503. You are just

  504. the most holy group

  505. I've ever been around.

  506. Let me ask the question

  507. a little slower

  508. because I may have

  509. confused you

  510. a little bit.

  511. How many of you

  512. have struggled

  513. with giving glory

  514. to other people?

  515. How many of you

  516. this is a little

  517. more comfortable

  518. how many of you

  519. have tried to diminish

  520. the glory of other people?

  521. They buy a new car

  522. and you think

  523. they shouldn't have

  524. one that good.

  525. And so

  526. when you have

  527. an opportunity

  528. to make an observation

  529. about their car purchases

  530. you have something

  531. to say about

  532. no that's not a car

  533. I'd buy.

  534. I'd be more frugal

  535. and I'd probably

  536. give at least

  537. $30 of the whole

  538. entire process

  539. to missions.

  540. You know

  541. I'm generous

  542. to a fault.

  543. We always

  544. we're

  545. we're

  546. thinking about

  547. ourselves

  548. too often.

  549. By the way

  550. the little sidebar

  551. I've probably

  552. said it more

  553. than once

  554. people that think

  555. a lot about

  556. themselves

  557. are invariably

  558. pretty unhappy.

  559. How many of you

  560. have learned that?

  561. Just one of you.

  562. the rest of you

  563. are still learning.

  564. Okay?

  565. People who think

  566. a lot about

  567. themselves

  568. are invariably

  569. unhappy.

  570. Back to the text.

  571. When we

  572. give him

  573. glory

  574. he is

  575. glorified

  576. and the one

  577. who gives him

  578. glory

  579. is glorified.

  580. The math

  581. is bulletproof.

  582. He that

  583. exalts

  584. himself

  585. shall be

  586. abased.

  587. That means

  588. you try to

  589. puff yourself

  590. up

  591. he is going

  592. to do

  593. what?

  594. He's going

  595. to let

  596. the air

  597. out of

  598. your tires.

  599. If you

  600. humble

  601. yourself

  602. what is

  603. he going

  604. to do?

  605. Huh?

  606. What?

  607. What's he

  608. going to do?

  609. If you

  610. would

  611. by the way

  612. you have

  613. the responsibility

  614. of humbling

  615. yourself

  616. and the

  617. way to

  618. humble

  619. yourself

  620. is by

  621. remembering

  622. God is

  623. on the

  624. throne

  625. and he

  626. is supremely

  627. significant

  628. and it's

  629. all about

  630. him

  631. and when

  632. you humble

  633. yourself

  634. he will

  635. do what?

  636. He'll put

  637. just a little

  638. more air

  639. in the tires

  640. to help

  641. you.

  642. Do what?

  643. Does anybody

  644. know what

  645. his intention

  646. is?

  647. It is not

  648. so you get a

  649. big head

  650. and start

  651. taking credit

  652. for you.

  653. You know

  654. what?

  655. I gave

  656. glory to

  657. God

  658. and now

  659. I'm

  660. pretty

  661. special.

  662. Down

  663. it goes.

  664. Okay.

  665. Back to

  666. the text

  667. because I

  668. want you

  669. to focus

  670. on the

  671. text.

  672. Here we

  673. are.

  674. There's

  675. verse 32.

  676. If God

  677. is glorified

  678. in him

  679. God will

  680. also glorify

  681. him in

  682. himself.

  683. So keep

  684. in mind

  685. that one

  686. of Christ's

  687. goals in

  688. his final

  689. words to

  690. his disciple

  691. before the

  692. cross was

  693. to give

  694. them hope

  695. in a truth

  696. that would

  697. prepare them

  698. for what

  699. was coming.

  700. That's

  701. important to

  702. understand.

  703. Here were

  704. his disciples

  705. who were

  706. going to be

  707. absolutely

  708. trashed,

  709. blown out

  710. by the

  711. cross.

  712. Their

  713. hero,

  714. the one

  715. they'd been

  716. following for

  717. three years,

  718. was going to

  719. hang on the

  720. cross and

  721. suffer the

  722. most cruel

  723. death.

  724. And their

  725. entire

  726. worldview of

  727. life was

  728. going to be

  729. just shattered.

  730. He says,

  731. don't worry

  732. about it.

  733. Don't worry

  734. about it.

  735. That which I

  736. am doing on

  737. the cross is

  738. all for the

  739. glory of God

  740. and I want

  741. you to

  742. understand the

  743. math.

  744. When I

  745. give glory

  746. to the

  747. Father,

  748. he'll see

  749. to it that

  750. glory comes

  751. back to

  752. me.

  753. Jesus

  754. wanted to

  755. see,

  756. Jesus wanted

  757. his disciples

  758. to see more

  759. than his

  760. physical

  761. suffering.

  762. He wanted

  763. them to

  764. understand that

  765. there was

  766. more that was

  767. going to take

  768. place than

  769. his separation

  770. from the

  771. Father.

  772. Behind the

  773. suffering that

  774. he was going

  775. to endure

  776. was the

  777. most merciful,

  778. the most

  779. wonderful,

  780. the most

  781. noble,

  782. the most

  783. dramatic

  784. display of

  785. the wisdom

  786. and love

  787. of God

  788. of all

  789. of eternity.

  790. Forever.

  791. When people

  792. think about

  793. Christ,

  794. they will

  795. think about

  796. the cross.

  797. Do you

  798. understand that?

  799. And what

  800. Jesus also

  801. wanted his

  802. disciples to

  803. understand is

  804. that his

  805. death for our

  806. sins according

  807. to the

  808. Father's will

  809. was all

  810. for the

  811. Father's

  812. glory.

  813. And at

  814. the same

  815. time,

  816. his Father

  817. would act

  818. for the

  819. glory of

  820. his Son.

  821. There is

  822. an if

  823. in the

  824. logic here.

  825. Look at

  826. the passage.

  827. If God

  828. is glorified

  829. in him,

  830. that's a

  831. condition.

  832. God will

  833. also glorify

  834. him in

  835. himself.

  836. If God

  837. is glorified,

  838. God will

  839. glorify the

  840. one that

  841. brings him

  842. glory.

  843. Will you

  844. kind of fix

  845. that in

  846. your minds?

  847. How many

  848. of you

  849. understand

  850. that?

  851. Let me

  852. try some

  853. of this

  854. perverse

  855. Christian

  856. math for

  857. you.

  858. Here we

  859. go.

  860. Are you

  861. following

  862. me?

  863. It is

  864. more

  865. blessed

  866. to...

  867. The word

  868. blessed

  869. actually means

  870. happier.

  871. Being a

  872. genuine

  873. heartfelt

  874. giver

  875. is more

  876. enjoyable

  877. than being

  878. a greedy

  879. self-focused

  880. circling the

  881. drain thinker.

  882. Right?

  883. Jesus said

  884. this,

  885. he who

  886. saves his

  887. life will

  888. lose it.

  889. He who's

  890. interested

  891. in his

  892. glory is

  893. going to

  894. lose it.

  895. He who

  896. loses his

  897. life gives

  898. glory to

  899. the one who

  900. deserves it,

  901. namely God,

  902. will be

  903. glorified.

  904. If God

  905. is glorified,

  906. God will

  907. glorify the

  908. one that

  909. brings him

  910. glory.

  911. I'll not

  912. leave off the

  913. last little

  914. part of the

  915. verse here,

  916. but the

  917. little statement

  918. that is made

  919. in himself is

  920. pointing out a

  921. very interesting

  922. theological fact.

  923. How many of

  924. you got your

  925. hands around

  926. the Trinity

  927. issue?

  928. I mean,

  929. it's like you

  930. got that one.

  931. It's, you

  932. know, you

  933. can answer

  934. that.

  935. It's like,

  936. yeah.

  937. How can,

  938. what's it

  939. saying is

  940. that when

  941. God the

  942. Father gives

  943. glory to

  944. the Son,

  945. guess what

  946. happens?

  947. It comes

  948. how?

  949. Back to

  950. the Father.

  951. How do you

  952. separate the,

  953. well, if

  954. Jesus, we're

  955. all into

  956. this, if I

  957. give him

  958. glory, I'm

  959. not going to

  960. have some

  961. left for

  962. me.

  963. No.

  964. God, in

  965. glorifying his

  966. Son, there's

  967. a nice little

  968. word coming

  969. here, that

  970. glory redounds,

  971. redounds.

  972. That's got a

  973. ring to it,

  974. just a simple

  975. one, it's not

  976. a hard one,

  977. it just means

  978. it comes back.

  979. So God,

  980. Jesus gives

  981. glory to the

  982. Father, and

  983. the Father gives

  984. glory to the

  985. Son, and we

  986. wrap up the

  987. story by here's

  988. the statement,

  989. and it comes

  990. back, it just

  991. comes back.

  992. So here's some

  993. closing thoughts

  994. on glory and

  995. the cross.

  996. Listen, I want

  997. to say this

  998. carefully, we

  999. diminish the

  1000. glory of God

  1001. and the glory of

  1002. Jesus Christ when

  1003. we think about

  1004. the cross as

  1005. only being about

  1006. us.

  1007. I think that's

  1008. important to get

  1009. our heads around.

  1010. them.

  1011. The truth of

  1012. the matter is,

  1013. is our first

  1014. thoughts about

  1015. the cross, and

  1016. am I blessed by

  1017. the cross?

  1018. Are you blessed

  1019. by the cross?

  1020. That is undeniably

  1021. true.

  1022. But our first

  1023. thought about the

  1024. glory of the

  1025. cross should be

  1026. that it magnifies

  1027. the unbelievable

  1028. glory of God.

  1029. Our appreciation

  1030. for the cross

  1031. should first of

  1032. all reflect our

  1033. appreciation for the

  1034. glory of God.

  1035. Yes, he died for

  1036. us, but Jesus

  1037. also died for the

  1038. glory of the

  1039. Father.

  1040. And it is

  1041. appropriate in

  1042. this passage to

  1043. see that his main

  1044. goal was to

  1045. glorify the

  1046. Father.

  1047. That was the

  1048. most important

  1049. thing he had in

  1050. mind.

  1051. Remember in the

  1052. garden when he

  1053. prayed, if it's

  1054. possible, let this

  1055. cup pass from me?

  1056. Nevertheless,

  1057. what?

  1058. In essence, what

  1059. he was saying is

  1060. it's about you.

  1061. And I want to

  1062. appeal to you that

  1063. it is noble, it's

  1064. appropriate for us

  1065. to appreciate the

  1066. significance of the

  1067. cross in redeeming

  1068. us.

  1069. But more than

  1070. that, the

  1071. significance of the

  1072. cross is the glory

  1073. that redounds to the

  1074. character of God

  1075. and to Christ.

  1076. And so we who

  1077. seek to follow

  1078. Jesus should be

  1079. focused on living

  1080. our lives for

  1081. his glory.

  1082. Jesus was willing

  1083. to live and Jesus

  1084. was willing to die

  1085. for the glory of

  1086. the Father.

  1087. And that's the way

  1088. it should be for

  1089. us.

  1090. So try this.

  1091. The next time you

  1092. think about how

  1093. many of you have

  1094. ever had a

  1095. conversation and

  1096. left and then

  1097. afterwards thought of

  1098. things you could

  1099. have said, should

  1100. have said, wish

  1101. you'd said, and

  1102. are glad you

  1103. didn't.

  1104. One of the

  1105. advantages of being

  1106. 68 is that I've

  1107. had so many

  1108. absolute bombs in

  1109. things I said off

  1110. the cuff that I've

  1111. at least learned to

  1112. pace myself.

  1113. That's it.

  1114. You know, it's

  1115. like, yeah.

  1116. But then my little

  1117. old perverted mind

  1118. still goes in

  1119. circles, you know,

  1120. I could have said

  1121. this.

  1122. Yeah.

  1123. I should have.

  1124. This would have

  1125. helped, you know.

  1126. No.

  1127. So, I want you

  1128. the next time you

  1129. find yourself going

  1130. in that hamster

  1131. cage logic.

  1132. How many of you

  1133. understand what I

  1134. mean by hamster

  1135. cage logic?

  1136. How many of you

  1137. ever seen hamsters

  1138. getting exercise in a

  1139. cage?

  1140. You know, just

  1141. like, it's a very,

  1142. very little circle and

  1143. they're just worked up

  1144. to death, you know.

  1145. Hamster cage logic.

  1146. That's when you are

  1147. the center.

  1148. You know, and so

  1149. next time you find

  1150. yourself thinking that

  1151. way, just stop and

  1152. say, just a minute,

  1153. Tim, Tim, stop,

  1154. stop, stop.

  1155. How does this bring

  1156. glory to God?

  1157. How does this bring

  1158. glory to God?

  1159. How does this bring

  1160. glory to God?

  1161. We should be focused

  1162. on living our lives

  1163. for His glory.

  1164. Another little truth

1165. that I want you to put

  1166. your hands around here

  1167. is that God honors

  1168. those who honor Him.

  1169. God honors those

  1170. who honor Him.

  1171. There is no heavenly

  1172. logic in the Word

  1173. that proposes that a

  1174. man who defies the

  1175. Scripture in being

  1176. self-focused and about

  1177. himself is ever going

  1178. to receive the glory

  1179. and the encouragement

  1180. and the strengthening of

  1181. the Spirit of God.

1182. God, I've got to say

  1183. this carefully.

  1184. I think our

  1185. preponderance today

  1186. on all the heartaches

1187. and sorrow that I see

  1188. in many people's lives

  1189. is most often a

  1190. reflection of the fact

  1191. that they're not very

1192. focused on the only one

1193. who they will focus on

  1194. for all of eternity.

  1195. Does that make sense?

  1196. Huh?

  1197. Everybody listen.

  1198. What we're doing now

1199. is warm up for the

  1200. main event.

  1201. Now, thankfully,

  1202. when we're there,

1203. we're not going to be

  1204. obsessed with all the

  1205. other things going on

  1206. around us,

1207. but it doesn't hurt to

  1208. focus on hitting the

  1209. ball properly.

  1210. The ball, the thing

  1211. that we're focused on

  1212. is the glory and

  1213. supremacy of Christ,

  1214. and if that's what

  1215. we're going to occupy

  1216. ourselves with in

  1217. eternity, we ought to

  1218. understand that when

1219. we honor God, He lifts

  1220. us up.

  1221. When you make much

  1222. of yourself, when

  1223. you're obsessed with

  1224. your own sufferings,

  1225. when you're just

  1226. overwhelmed by your

  1227. own mistreatment or

  1228. circumstances, and when

  1229. you think you're better

  1230. than others or more

  1231. deserving, the fact of

1232. the matter is that God

1233. steps out of the way

1234. and He lets you run

  1235. your own unhappy path.

1236. He will not bring glory

1237. to the one who does

  1238. not glorify Himself.

  1239. Finally, the day is

  1240. coming when all will

  1241. honor Him.

1242. That is stunning to me.

  1243. Do you understand

  1244. that?

  1245. The thought is

  1246. profoundly encouraging

  1247. for one.

  1248. The thought is

  1249. profoundly troubling

  1250. for another.

1251. Do you think that in

  1252. hell, the unrepentant

  1253. sinner will not bring

  1254. glory to God?

  1255. And what is the

  1256. answer?

  1257. The unrepentant,

  1258. hard-hearted,

  1259. absolutely rebellious

  1260. sinner in hell will

  1261. bring glory to God.

  1262. All will glorify God.

  1263. God will glorify God.

1264. And I would encourage you

1265. to recognize that one of

1266. the things that we who

1267. know Christ are going to

1268. do is we are going to

  1269. spend eternity enjoying

  1270. His presence, just

  1271. lavishing in the absolute

1272. joy of bringing glory to

  1273. Him.

1274. Get the picture for me

  1275. here.

1276. Here is a boy who is

  1277. dating a girl.

1278. And the girl is really

  1279. pretty insecure and a

  1280. little bit obsessed with

  1281. herself.

  1282. They're standing on the

  1283. beach during their

  1284. honeymoon.

1285. And it is the most

  1286. spectacular sunset.

1287. And the guy in all his

  1288. innocence says to the

  1289. girl that he's just

  1290. married, honey, isn't

  1291. that spectacular?

  1292. And she says, what?

  1293. You're not thinking about

  1294. me?

  1295. Get a life.

  1296. Okay?

1297. I've bumped into people who

1298. have no imagination of what

1299. the joy and glory of heaven

1300. is going to be like.

1301. Do you know what it's

  1302. going to be?

1303. It is going to be occupied

  1304. with the one absolute

1305. supreme God and Savior of

  1306. this universe.

1307. And we will worship Him

  1308. forever.

1309. So there's some of you here

1310. this morning that need to

1311. do what I had to do this

  1312. week.

1313. There's some of you that

1314. need to say, you know,

1315. God, I have spent too much

  1316. of my energy thinking

1317. about me and it's not been

  1318. very productive.

  1319. I repent.

  1320. And I, with conscious

  1321. deliberation, pray that you

1322. would help me glorify you.

1323. There's some of you here

1324. that actually need to put

1325. feet to that prayer and go

1326. talk to other people and say,

  1327. you know what?

1328. The way I've treated you is

1329. reflective of the fact that

1330. I've been all about me and

  1331. not about Him.

1332. Do you know what really

  1333. strains relationships?

1334. It's when we take God out of

  1335. the picture and insert

  1336. ourselves into His place.

  1337. It just makes messes.

  1338. Your wife probably knows

  1339. you've been doing it.

1340. She just doesn't have the

  1341. nerve to tell you.

1342. But go ahead and suck it up

1343. and let her know the fact.

  1344. I got the memo.

  1345. I heard pastor's sermon and

1346. the Holy Spirit convicted me.

  1347. I've been a self-focused

1348. person and the reason I've

1349. been such a jerk is I've not

  1350. been worshiping Christ.

1351. There's some of you here

1352. this morning that do not

1353. know the Lord Jesus Christ

1354. and there is no remedy for

1355. your soul except in Jesus.

1356. And here's Jesus looking at

1357. the cross and He says the

1358. first thing about this is the

  1359. glory of the Father.

1360. He also died because He

  1361. loves you.

1362. He died to offer to you

  1363. complete forgiveness for all

  1364. of your sins.

1365. And for you to walk out the

1366. door and say no thank you

  1367. or I don't really care about

1368. what you have to offer is a

  1369. sobering thought.

1370. I want you to ponder that.

  1371. Let's close in prayer.

1372. Our precious Father in God

1373. this morning as we think

  1374. about our Savior, the

1375. glorious work on the cross,

  1376. we marvel.

  1377. We're beside ourselves when

1378. we think of how you planned

  1379. redemption.

1380. willingly taking your Son to be

  1381. our sacrifice.

1382. And we're thankful for how the

  1383. story ends.

1384. We will spend all of eternity,

1385. we who know you, in worship

  1386. before your throne saying,

  1387. worthy is the Lamb.

1388. we want that expression to be

  1389. well practiced.

1390. And so we, with humility,

1391. commit ourselves to live lives

1392. that bring glory to your name,

  1393. not our own.

1394. We rededicate ourselves to that

1395. great and holy purpose this

1396. morning for the glory and the

  1397. testimony of Christ.

1398. And we pray this in Jesus' name.

  1399. Amen.

  1400. Amen.
