  1. The children may go or stay, but going is more normal, I suppose.

  2. ! So out you go. Thank you.

  3. Let me read your Bibles this morning to John chapter 13. Let me read the passage, and I

    John 13 chapter mention

  4. want you to follow along in your own copy of the Scriptures, beginning there in verse

  5. 34. A new commandment I give you, that you love one another just as I have loved you,

  6. you also are to love one another. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples

  7. if you have love one for another. Since we don't have a problem with this passage, and

  8. it's something we're pretty good at, I'm just going to pray that God helps me preach for

  9. my own soul's edification. How's that? The rest of you just listen in and see how it applies.

  10. But let's pray together. Our Father God, this morning we are so very thankful for the blessing

  11. we have of being able to open the Scriptures and find in them words of life, truth.

  12. We're thankful also for the fact that we who know the Lord Jesus Christ have the indwelling

  13. Spirit, and one of His ministries to us is enabling us in listening, in understanding,

  14. and applying the Scriptures. And we would ask that this morning you would do a work in our lives

  15. that is powerful to the point that the unbelieving world marks the radical difference in our lives

  16. from this day until you take us home. We ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  17. So I want to ask you a question. Just kind of think with me here for a minute at the start. And I do this

  18. because I want to frame this lesson against the backdrop. The context is important. Question.

  19. Do you think the disciples really, really loved each other a whole bunch?

  20. Nod your heads like this or go like that. Okay. I'm kind of convinced that. Okay.

  21. Are there any Bible indications that they struggled a little bit with getting along with each other?

  22. Any Bible? I mean, after all, we're not up here to hear my opinion. We want to know what the Word says.

  23. Right? Are there any Bible

  24. information items that kind of tell us they

  25. struggled a little bit with each other?

  26. What were they arguing about this night?

  27. Remember?

  28. If you were to go, and don't need to, but if you were to look in Luke,

  29. in the context of the Last Supper, you'll find that

  30. they ended up in a dispute.

  31. Now, you've got to understand that this was in the context

  32. of Jesus breaking bread and sharing the cup and saying,

  33. this blood is the New Testament.

  34. This is my body, which is for you.

  35. I'm going to die for your sins.

  36. I am going to die because I love you,

  37. and I'm going to die because I love the Father.

  38. And here they are having their little intramural spat

  39. about who's going to be what.

  40. Can I tell you,

  41. you can't be arguing about who's going to be the greatest

  42. and really be in love with anybody other than yourself?

  43. Okay.

  44. Now, we've got the disciples in the bag.

  45. We know where their hearts were, right?

  46. Here's what I want you to do.

  47. Just think with me just a minute.

  48. I want you to make a short list.

  49. I don't want you to cover everything,

  50. but I just want you to make a short list of some people

  51. that you honestly really don't like a whole lot.

  52. I know you have to think hard.

  53. But some people that you actually kind of struggle with,

  54. even that are in the body of Christ,

  55. I mean, you know, they irritate you.

  56. They've offended you.

  57. I appreciate pastor's prayer.

  58. If it were not for the fact you know better as a believer,

  59. you would go ahead and get involved in bitterness

  60. and an unforgiving spirit, right?

  61. But what happens when you have an unforgiving spirit?

  62. Does anybody know what the Bible says,

  63. the unintended consequence of that disobedient act is?

  64. Matthew 18 says this.

  65. You get turned over to the tormentors.

  66. Some of the most miserable people I've ever met

  67. are people that will not forgive.

  68. Okay, so here we are.

  69. We're just talking about the fact, short list,

  70. some people that are really honestly a real challenge for you to love.

  71. You got your list, right?

  72. I grew up in India.

  73. My parents were missionaries.

  74. One of the things I learned in India

  75. is that missionaries a lot of times leave the field because,

  76. do you know why?

  77. Why?

  78. Because they can't get along with other missionaries.

  79. I have had the privilege of serving here for 30 years.

  80. Well, it will be 30 in December 30th, something like that, you know.

  81. I have seen people come and go, sadly, profoundly saddening to me.

  82. And one of the most common denominators

  83. is they were having trouble with other people.

  84. Yesterday, a number of us were taking oatmeal to homeless people.

  85. Do you know what the number one common denominator is

  86. over the years that I've discovered with people

  87. that are in a homeless environment?

  88. Do you know what it is?

  89. They can't get along with other people.

  90. I talked with an individual a couple months ago,

  91. several months ago.

  92. The dad and mom are attorneys here in Columbus

  93. living under the bridge.

  94. Reading a play by Moliere.

  95. And you need to know the name,

  96. so I'm just throwing them out there so you can hold on to them.

  97. Right, Jared?

  98. He's like, who cares?

  99. But reading a French play and reading Oedipus Rex.

  100. You know, it's like, I mean, these are important books to read.

  101. And there he is, chattering at night, freezing,

  102. because he doesn't like his mom and dad.

  103. Met a guy yesterday.

  104. Has a sister in Mount Sterling.

  105. I mean, is that very far away?

  106. Does anybody know?

  107. Is that?

  108. I'm teasing you.

  109. It's like, I would rather sleep under the bridge

  110. than sleep with my family, right?

  111. Okay.

  112. How does that happen?

  113. You got your short list?

  114. I want you to remember my prayer.

  115. It's for me.

  116. Lord, I want your word to make me different

  117. than I am by nature.

  118. I want to be a person who understands

  119. what it is to love like Jesus loves.

  120. Oh, add this little piece there.

  121. Father, with the power of the Spirit of God.

  122. Well, with that, let's get into the lesson.

  123. And I want you to understand that

  124. had you asked the disciples,

  125. okay, so what is Jesus going to say

  126. just, you know, like five hours

  127. before he dies on the cross?

  128. What is he going to say?

  129. How many of you think,

  130. I mean, if you didn't know the story

  131. because you got the book,

  132. but how many of you think that,

  133. oh, yeah, yeah, I would talk about loving one another.

  134. And so here we go with Jesus.

  135. As he goes about the Last Supper,

  136. the first thing that he does is

  137. he gets involved in a Passover lesson.

  138. And I want you to understand that

  139. the way in which the Passover was constructed,

  140. going all the way back to the book of Exodus,

  141. and you don't need to go back there at this time,

  142. but one of the characteristics of celebrating the Passover

  143. is that it was a time of family instruction.

  144. I'll just kind of recite the portion.

  145. In Exodus chapter 12, verse 25 and 27, it says this,

    Exodus 12:25

  146. And when you come into the land

  147. that the Lord will give you as he promised you,

  148. you shall keep this service.

  149. And when your children say to you,

  150. what do you mean by, why are we doing this?

  151. You shall say to them,

  152. it is the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover,

  153. for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel

  154. in Egypt when he struck the Egyptians

  155. but spared our houses.

  156. So, in this pattern of conducting the Passover

  157. in a very typical and traditional Jewish fashion,

  158. one of the things that was wrapped up in that ceremony

  159. and that service was teaching and instruction.

  160. And so I have no doubt that in relationship

  161. to that responsibility,

  162. Jesus, as he conducted the Passover,

  163. the Last Supper,

  164. he actively engaged himself

  165. in teaching critical lessons to his disciples.

  166. And I've got to tell you that I am fully persuaded

  167. that the disciples didn't get it.

  168. I mean, do you think they did?

  169. No.

  170. But the benefit is that it was placed into their hearts

  171. by the teaching of the Lord Jesus

  172. recorded for us in the Scriptures

  173. and enabled in terms of the ministry of the Spirit of God,

  174. bringing back to remembrance

  175. those things which he said,

  176. for our sakes that we may grow

  177. to be more like the Lord Jesus Christ.

  178. And so I do think there is some significance

  179. for us to stop and think here this morning

  180. of just how important this particular portion

  181. of the lesson must have been

  182. for Jesus right on the other side

  183. of Judas going out

  184. and him saying,

  185. now is the Son of Man glorified

  186. and God is glorified in him.

  187. He says, and by the way,

  188. I've got a new commandment for you.

  189. So what I want us to do now

  190. as we frame this issue of here's the Passover lesson

  191. and Jesus says,

  192. I've got a new commandment for you.

  193. Let's think a little bit about what is new.

  194. What are we talking about here?

  195. The newness of his command.

  196. As we take up verse 34

  197. and kind of put your finger on it there

  198. and look, it's a new commandment.

  199. We recognize that actually

  200. this statement of loving other people

  201. was not an entirely new idea.

  202. It wasn't something that Jesus kind of

  203. just invented on the spur of the moment

  204. or thought up

  205. because if you know the ministry of Christ,

  206. one of the things that characterized it,

  207. it was Bible rich.

  208. What I mean by that is that

  209. every time he had a lesson,

  210. every time he had a statement,

  211. you could track it back.

  212. You could track it back to the Old Testament

  213. that was just kind of the genesis of his teaching.

  214. He who was the Word brought the Word forward.

  215. Not new, but the Word that had already been given.

  216. And you recognize that Moses had already given,

  217. under God's instruction,

  218. the commandment in Leviticus chapter 19, verse 18.

    Leviticus 19:18

  219. Take a look at that passage just for a moment.

  220. Leviticus chapter 19, verse 18.

    Leviticus 19:18

  221. Let's go back there just for a second

  222. and mark the instruction there.

  223. Leviticus chapter 19, verse 18.

    Leviticus 19:18

  224. Leviticus chapter 19,

    Leviticus 19 chapter mention

  225. you shall not take vengeance

  226. or bear a grudge against any of the sons

  227. of your own people,

  228. but you shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  229. Deuteronomy chapter 6 is the other one.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  230. In Deuteronomy chapter 6, verse 5,

    Deuteronomy 6:5

  231. hear, O Israel,

  232. the Lord our God,

  233. the Lord is one,

  234. and you shall,

  235. what?

  236. Can anybody say the rest of it?

  237. You shall love the Lord your God

  238. with all your heart,

  239. with all your soul,

  240. and with all your mind.

  241. And you'll remember that Jesus was asked

  242. the question by a lawyer,

  243. hey, by the way,

  244. what's the greatest commandment?

  245. Which one I really need to focus in on?

  246. And Jesus said what?

  247. Love the Lord your God

  248. and love your neighbor as yourself.

  249. So we have to ask ourselves the question,

  250. it's a practical one,

  251. so what's new about this?

  252. Fair?

  253. I mean, Jesus said,

  254. he said what?

  255. A new commandment.

  256. What is new?

  257. It helps us to understand,

  258. first of all,

  259. that the word that Jesus used for new

  260. is a Greek word that refers to something

  261. that is more impressive

  262. or superior in value,

  263. more attractive.

  264. Now, this is not to be compared

  265. with boxes of cereal,

  266. but you and I have been trolled

  267. innumerable times

  268. by advertising that tells us

  269. this is new and improved.

  270. And the truth of the matter is

  271. the packaging is new,

  272. but the actual contents is less.

  273. How many of you figured that one out?

  274. It's like, what happened?

  275. That box of Cheerios used to be this big

  276. and now it's this big.

  277. And it does have a fancier exterior,

  278. but hey, I was into what was inside the box,

  279. not the outside.

  280. Can't eat that.

  281. And so here's Jesus saying,

  282. this is new.

  283. He's saying,

  284. this is something that is,

  285. that's better.

  286. And we have to stop

  287. and ask ourselves the question,

  288. where is the superiority

  289. in this matter?

  290. The newness of this command

  291. lies actually in the benchmark

  292. that Jesus set for loving.

  293. So keep in mind the passage

  294. that we have over in Leviticus

  295. that I just recited

  296. where it said,

  297. love your neighbor as yourself.

  298. Here is Jesus saying,

  299. I want to kind of up this a little bit.

  300. I want you to love one another

  301. like I have loved you.

  302. And so the newness lies in this matter

  303. of the comparison

  304. and the connection he is making

  305. with the expectation

  306. that you and I love one another

  307. the way he loves us,

  308. not the way you love yourself.

  309. Now let me get over on a side here

  310. just for a moment

  311. because it continues to be

  312. one of these things

  313. that just stuns me.

  314. I can remember having a conversation

  315. with an individual

  316. that had been engaged in immorality

  317. and gross behavior.

  318. And as he was,

  319. how many of you have learned

  320. that in counseling

  321. it's always good to start out

  322. by listening longer than anything?

  323. Take time and hear

  324. what a person has to say.

  325. And this person was just going on

  326. about all the filth and vile.

  327. And I asked him a question

  328. after he'd talked for a long time.

  329. I said,

  330. so why do you think you did that?

  331. I mean, you know,

  332. I expected a Sunday school answer.

  333. The guy said he was a believer.

  334. He's like, oh, I sinned.

  335. Now here's what he said.

  336. He said,

  337. I guess I didn't love myself enough.

  338. I was like, what?

  339. Now one of the things

  340. that goes with being 68

  341. is you learn just kind of like,

  342. uh-huh, yeah.

  343. Yeah, that was really good.

  344. I didn't do that.

  345. I just kind of,

  346. no, I didn't.

  347. You just have to act like,

  348. yeah, I get it.

  349. But I said, you know,

  350. your problem wasn't loving yourself.

  351. Your problem is

  352. you're just focused entirely on yourself.

  353. You're really full of yourself.

  354. I didn't say it exactly that way.

  355. It was a little slower.

  356. But here's my point.

  357. The church of the living God

  358. has bought into the unbeliever's mindset

  359. that the starting of all of our getting it all right

  360. is loving ourself.

  361. Jesus wasn't saying,

  362. guys, you need to get a handle

  363. on how much you love yourself.

  364. He was saying,

  365. let's get an idea

  366. of how you ought to love other people.

  367. At least kind of bring it up in your game

  368. to the way you love yourself.

  369. How many of you love yourselves?

  370. No, I don't want to admit it publicly,

  371. but are you good at that one?

  372. Try this.

  373. Hit your thumb with a hammer one time.

  374. Your entire psyche wraps up with saying,

  375. don't do that again.

  376. Do you follow me?

  377. It's really, you got the memo.

  378. It's like, I like my thumb.

  379. Don't be so, you know,

  380. you got my point, right?

  381. We love ourselves.

  382. And Jesus says, hey, you know,

  383. you need to get into this a little more.

  384. And by the way,

  385. the newness also relies

  386. or lies in this issue of

  387. the frame of reference

  388. that Jesus was pointing to

  389. was new,

  390. was superior.

  391. So Jesus here is calling his disciples,

  392. in fact, he is calling us,

  393. to love one another like he loves us.

  394. How many are doing well at that?

  395. Come on, just say to me,

  396. I am.

  397. I'm really good.

  398. I love people like Jesus loves me.

  399. Liar.

  400. I mean, you know.

  401. Any of you here struggle

  402. with being a little judgmental?

  403. I mean, when, you know,

  404. the first thought that you have

  405. is not sweetness and light,

  406. you know.

  407. Someone is five minutes late

  408. and you don't immediately think,

  409. oh, they may have gotten struck

  410. by a train, you know.

  411. You're just thinking,

  412. yeah, they don't care about me.

  413. My time is really important.

  414. Or someone doesn't answer your text,

  415. you know, the full day

  416. and you think to yourself,

  417. well, if they cared more,

  418. they would keep their watch chart.

  419. You know,

  420. they have all kinds of things

  421. that help them know

  422. when I'm texting.

  423. And when I'm texting,

  424. it's, you know,

  425. it's not God,

  426. but it's close.

  427. Jesus says,

  428. hey, you're to love one another

  429. the way He loves you.

  430. And the truth of the matter is,

  431. is loving other people

  432. the way we love ourselves

  433. does have some inconsistency

  434. and is insensitive.

  435. How many of you have to admit

  436. there are times that

  437. you aren't very impressed

  438. with yourself?

  439. I mean, you admit it.

  440. But the fact of the matter is

  441. that Jesus calls us

  442. to a standard of love

  443. that absolutely surpasses

  444. the best we do

  445. at loving ourselves.

  446. So when we love like Jesus loves,

  447. our love goes to a far higher,

  448. nobler,

  449. and spirit-enabled plane.

  450. I want you to hold on to that fact.

  451. Because if you walk out of here

  452. this morning thinking to yourself,

  453. all right,

  454. I need to up my game

  455. and I have got a list

  456. of three people

  457. that I'm just going to really focus

  458. on loving more.

  459. And you go and stop at

  460. Walmart,

  461. Meyers,

  462. CSV,

  463. I don't want to name all of them,

  464. but you know,

  465. you're going to get five cards

  466. and you're going to make

  467. a little list

  468. and you're going to put it on you

  469. and you're just going to go

  470. all hog wild to do this

  471. and you don't recognize

  472. that you can't pull it off

  473. apart from the Spirit of God,

  474. you're missing the point.

  475. When we love like Jesus loves,

  476. we're going to step it

  477. to a spirit-enabled plane.

  478. So let's think a little bit

  479. about how Jesus actually loves us.

  480. Now, for the sake of continuity,

  481. I'm going to stay primarily

  482. within the frame

  483. of John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  484. John 13 has enough information

  485. of how Jesus loved

  486. that we don't have to go beyond it.

  487. Now, I want to tell you this morning

  488. for me to propose to you

  489. that John chapter 13

    John 13 chapter mention

  490. kind of presses together

  491. all the important information

  492. about the love of Christ

  493. would be wrong

  494. and I couldn't do that

  495. because for one,

  496. in Ephesians chapter 3,

    Ephesians 3:14–19

  497. verse 14 through 19,

  498. what does Paul say?

  499. How many of you know it

  500. without looking?

  501. You should.

  502. For this cause I bow the knee.

  503. Well, what's he going to pray for?

  504. He's going to pray

  505. that we might be able

  506. to comprehend with all the saints

  507. what is the breadth

  508. and height and width

  509. and depth of the love of Christ.

  510. How big is the love of Christ?

  511. How big?

  512. It is mind-blowing.

  513. But at least,

  514. for this morning's lesson,

  515. I want us to think about

  516. the love of Christ

  517. as we see framed here

  518. in John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  519. So, first of all,

  520. I want you to understand

  521. that the love of Christ

  522. is settled in its unwavering commitment.

  523. It is settled

  524. in its unwavering commitment.

  525. John chapter 13, verse 1,

    John 13:1

  526. it says here,

  527. Now before the feast of the Passover,

  528. when Jesus knew that His hour

  529. had come to depart

  530. out of this world to the Father,

  531. having loved His own

  532. who were in the world,

  533. He loved them to the, what?

  534. He loved them to the end.

  535. Aren't you glad

  536. that He loves you to the end?

  537. Huh?

  538. Huh?

  539. He hasn't changed His mind.

  540. I'm trying to think of the author.

  541. Pastor Saul,

  542. can you bail me here?

  543. David Platt,

  544. I'm thinking,

  545. There's nothing you can do

  546. that will make Jesus love you more,

  547. and there's,

  548. I'm waiting for a nod

  549. from somebody.

  550. Just nod

  551. to make me feel better.

  552. There's nothing you can do

  553. that will make Jesus love you more,

  554. and there's nothing you can do

  555. that will make Jesus love you less.

  556. That's really hard to believe,

  557. isn't it?

  558. I mean,

  559. we are in a performance-based world.

  560. Isn't that right?

  561. Huh?

  562. I love this statement.

  563. The love of Christ is settled

  564. in its unwavering commitment.

  565. That means that when we love like Jesus,

  566. we know up front

  567. that it's going to cost us

  568. more often than not.

  569. Courtship,

  570. I'm talking about

  571. between a young man and a woman,

  572. are usually,

  573. I call it hide-and-seek, actually.

  574. It's not full disclosure.

  575. You never want to talk about,

  576. you know,

  577. all the things that really come

  578. with marriage,

  579. but, you know,

  580. it's like,

  581. I am going to be the answer

  582. to all of your dreams.

  583. I mean,

  584. I am the best thing going.

  585. I am going to satisfy your interests.

  586. I will love on you.

  587. It's just going to be wonderful.

  588. It would probably be wise

  589. in pastoral counseling

  590. on premarital to say,

  591. do you realize

  592. what you're signing up for?

  593. Huh?

  594. Do you understand

  595. what's going to happen?

  596. You're going to spend

  597. the rest of your life.

  598. You're going to hand over

  599. your check.

  600. You're going to run up

  601. and down steps

  602. for a drink of water.

  603. You're going to move furniture

  604. until you die.

  605. Yes!

  606. She's in the nursery today.

  607. When we love like Jesus,

  608. we understand

  609. that it's going to cost us something.

  610. When we love like Jesus,

  611. we do not walk away

  612. from relationships

  613. because of the disappointments

  614. that come with them

  615. and the frailties

  616. that are involved in that.

  617. Loving like Jesus

  618. means we don't say,

  619. pay attention

  620. because these are some things

  621. that when you're counseling

  622. other people,

  623. you can help them with.

  624. When we're loving like Jesus,

  625. we don't say,

  626. here we go.

  627. Are you ready?

  628. Write this down

  629. so you can pick it up

  630. on helping others.

  631. I'm not getting my needs met.

  632. You ever heard of that said?

  633. I'm not getting my needs met?

  634. Or here's another one.

  635. Stinky, stinky.

  636. I didn't sign up for that.

  637. You heard that one?

  638. I didn't sign up for that.

  639. What?

  640. Loving like Jesus?

  641. Can you imagine Jesus saying that?

  642. What?

  643. What?

  644. What?

  645. What?

  646. It settled

  647. in its unwavering commitment.

  648. Second thing about the love of Christ,

  649. it is joyfully sacrificial to the end.

  650. As you look at John chapter 13,

    John 13 chapter mention

  651. here is Jesus at the table

  652. in verse 3 and 4.

  653. Jesus, knowing that the Father

  654. had given all things into His hand,

  655. that He was come from God

  656. and was going back to God,

  657. He knew exactly what was going to happen.

  658. And as He was there at the table

  659. with His disciples,

  660. that He loved unconditionally

  661. and with an unwavering love,

  662. He knew that His life

  663. was going to be sacrificed for them

  664. and it was joyful in doing so.

  665. I think about the passage in Hebrews

  666. where it says this,

  667. There are times when we're going to sacrifice our rights.

  668. We're going to sacrifice our preferences.

  669. I remember a dear saint came to me once

  670. and said,

  671. Pastor, I've been led to believe

  672. that you prefer hymns

  673. over some of these more contemporary songs.

  674. And I said,

  675. Yes, I do.

  676. And this dear saint said,

  677. Well, then why don't we sing more of them?

  678. And I said,

  679. Well, let me tell you,

  680. when we have dinner at the Kenoyer Home,

  681. I never fix a meal

  682. that is reflective of just my personal preferences.

  683. I fix a meal to the preferences of the children

  684. that God has blessed me with.

  685. I grew up in India

  686. and I can eat it as hot as you can make it.

  687. In fact, I like it that way.

  688. I prefer it that way.

  689. And any of you here that on occasion

  690. have decided to go spoon for spoon,

  691. you understand that I can stay with you.

  692. But here's the deal.

  693. Love gives away some of those preferences

  694. because of people that you genuinely love.

  695. I got to tell you,

  696. my mom knocks me out of the park.

  697. She's with Jesus now.

  698. But I remember when she began that process

  699. of adapting to more contemporary music.

  700. It was like nails on the chalkboard.

  701. Do you follow what I'm saying?

  702. There was a learning curve.

  703. There really was for Marlia.

  704. But she loved Jesus

  705. and she loved others.

  706. And when it came time to do her funeral,

  707. one of the songs was one of the more contemporary ones

  708. that we sing here as a congregation.

  709. And when we had that service,

  710. you guys knocked it out of the park.

  711. I remember your dad.

  712. Same thing.

  713. You cannot love like Jesus

  714. without being willing to give away your preferences.

  715. By the way,

  716. if you're going to love like Jesus,

  717. you're also going to have to learn a whole lot about forgiving.

  718. Will you write that down?

  719. We are hardwired for justice.

  720. Isn't that right?

  721. Huh?

  722. Justice?

  723. Merchant of Venice,

  724. some of us play Shylock to the extreme.

  725. It's like,

  726. I want my pound of flesh

  727. and it's going to be your heart.

  728. You can't be faithful in loving like Jesus

  729. and not be well-practiced at forgiving other people.

  730. Well,

  731. there's a third thing that I want you to see here.

  732. It is a sanctifying love.

  733. You find there,

  734. as Jesus goes about washing his disciples' feet,

  735. you'll remember that Peter was all about,

  736. you're not washing mine.

  737. And Jesus says,

  738. oh yeah,

  739. I am,

  740. or you don't have anything to do with me.

  741. And it really comes down to that.

  742. This business of washing the feet

  743. is kind of a word picture,

  744. an image of this business of progressive sanctification,

  745. dealing with the grit and the crud of daily living.

  746. And Jesus is into that.

  747. And that means if you're going to love like Jesus,

  748. that you are conscious and deliberate

  749. in going about building other people up.

  750. Are you listening?

  751. Dad,

  752. so what's your plan

  753. for helping your boy learn

  754. how to be a godly leader in his home

  755. before he walks out the door at 18 or so

  756. and is on his own?

  757. Are you going to nurture godliness?

  758. We do a much better job

  759. of teaching our children how to work

  760. than how to walk godly.

  761. There's nothing wrong

  762. with teaching your children how to work.

  763. That's important.

  764. But,

  765. it's more important

  766. to teach your children

  767. what it is to walk uprightly

  768. before the Lord.

  769. What does it say in Micah?

  770. Love mercy,

  771. do justice,

  772. walk humbly with your God.

  773. Get those down.

  774. And here we look at

  775. the sanctifying ministry of Christ.

  776. His interest was in

  777. the ministry to the disciples.

  778. There's a fourth point

  779. that I want you to recognize

  780. if you're going to love like Christ.

  781. Christ's love was spirit-enabled

  782. in its power.

  783. Now,

  784. I don't want to overemphasize this

  785. to the point of diminishing

  786. the entirety of the divine nature

  787. of Jesus,

  788. but at the same time,

  789. Jesus, the Son of Man,

  790. was dependent on the Spirit

  791. for His earthly ministry.

  792. I love the summary statement

  793. that you find

  794. over in Acts chapter 10, verse 38.

    Acts 10:38

  795. And let's turn there,

  796. lest you think I just kind of

  797. come off the top of my head

  798. with this,

  799. but Acts chapter 10, verse 38.

    Acts 10:38

  800. If you're going to love like Jesus,

  801. you're going to have to rely

  802. upon the Holy Spirit.

  803. Remember the list of three people

  804. that you struggle with loving?

  805. You have them.

  806. I know you.

  807. Most of you.

  808. Some of you.

  809. Okay, you got your list.

  810. You can't do it without the Holy Spirit.

  811. Acts chapter 10, verse 38.

    Acts 10:38

  812. Let me read it to you.

  813. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth

  814. with the Holy Spirit

  815. and with power,

  816. and He went about doing good

  817. and healing all who were oppressed

  818. by the devil,

  819. for God was with Him.

  820. How was God with Him?

  821. In the Holy Spirit's presence,

  822. enabling His ministry.

  823. Jesus had the Spirit

  824. without measure.

  825. No restraint,

  826. no restriction.

  827. Here is the encouraging piece

  828. to us.

  829. Listen,

  830. if you're sitting here

  831. and thinking

  832. that you actually need

  833. to walk out of here

  834. and kind of pick up

  835. your energy just a little bit

  836. and be a little more loving

  837. towards maybe two or three people

  838. on the list occasionally,

  839. that's not the purpose

  840. and vision that Jesus had

  841. in this lesson to His disciples.

  842. You cannot love effectively

  843. like Jesus calls us to love

  844. apart from a persistent dependence

  845. on the Holy Spirit.

  846. I love Galatians chapter 5, verse 16.

    Galatians 5:16

  847. I was reciting it to myself

  848. over and over again this morning.

  849. How many of you know it?

  850. Walk.

  851. Help me out here.

  852. How many of you?

  853. Just raise your hand.

  854. Just nod at me like you know it.

  855. You know the verse.

  856. Stop just for a second.

  857. Everybody know it.

  858. If you don't know the verse,

  859. it may be because you haven't thought

  860. it necessary to know it.

  861. Right?

  862. Illustration.

  863. I bet you I could call on

  864. Dr. Radcliffe

  865. or Dr. Malumba

  866. and they could give me

  867. a fairly reasonable explanation

  868. of what it is to have

  869. tachycardia.

  870. Could you do that?

  871. Bang.

  872. If I said to them

  873. I've had PVCs,

  874. they could answer all the details.

  875. Do you know why they know those things?

  876. Because it's,

  877. hello,

  878. it's important to their well-being

  879. and mine.

  880. Are you listening?

  881. Galatians chapter 5 verse 16,

    Galatians 5:16

  882. walk by the Spirit

  883. and you will not fulfill

  884. the lusts of the flesh.

  885. And if you don't have that verse

  886. on the short list,

  887. maybe you're just so adept at this

  888. you don't need the Holy Spirit's help.

  889. Okay?

  890. A little snarky.

  891. Forgive me for that.

  892. I mean that.

  893. I would plead with you.

  894. You can't love the way

  895. Jesus wants you to love

  896. unless you have the enabling

  897. of the Holy Spirit.

  898. So when we love like Jesus,

  899. we're going to do it in a manner

  900. that is beyond our natural bent.

  901. We're going to go beyond

  902. what it is to love ourselves.

  903. And we're only going to be able

  904. to do it through the power

  905. of the Spirit.

  906. So let me push this

  907. to this point.

  908. His expectation is that

  909. you love like Him

  910. backed up by the power

  911. of the Spirit of God.

  912. You need to get that in your mind.

  913. His expectation is that

  914. you love like Him

  915. backed up by the power

  916. of the Spirit of God.

  917. And it would be extremely frustrating

  918. and unfair to call us

  919. to love like Him

  920. apart from the enabling

  921. of the Spirit of God.

  922. Does that make sense?

  923. Do you understand the logic

  924. of what I said?

  925. It would be unfair to say

  926. here's what you ought

  927. to be doing

  928. and not recognize

  929. or encourage you to understand

  930. here's where the empowerment

  931. comes from.

  932. Take a look just for a second.

  933. You're there in John

  934. or you were in Acts

  935. but I want you to go

  936. to Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8:4

  937. verse 4 and 5.

  938. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8:4

  939. verse 4 and 5.

  940. Let me go ahead and read verse 3.

  941. For God has done

  942. what the law weakened

  943. by the flesh could not do

  944. by sending His own Son

  945. in the likeness of sinful flesh

  946. and for sin He condemned sin

  947. in the flesh

  948. in order that the righteous requirement

  949. of the law might be fulfilled in us

  950. who walk not according to the flesh

  951. but according to the Spirit.

  952. Do you understand what that's saying?

  953. I don't have to be the way I am.

  954. If you don't think

  955. that's pretty good news

  956. let me say it again.

  957. I don't have to be like I am.

  958. For those who live

  959. according to the flesh

  960. set their minds

  961. on things of the flesh.

  962. You wonder why you're thinking

  963. the way you are?

  964. There's the word.

  965. But those who live

  966. according to the Spirit

  967. set their minds

  968. on the things of the Spirit.

  969. Now, what is it like

  970. to set your mind

  971. on the things of the Spirit?

  972. It means that when those things

  973. of the flesh

  974. go zinging by

  975. you say

  976. no, no, no

  977. that's not

  978. no, no

  979. not that one.

  980. You got me?

  981. Going back to the passage

  982. in John

  983. if the idea of loving

  984. with an unwavering commitment

  985. with a sacrificial joy

  986. with a planned effort

  987. to bless the ones you love

  988. seems incredibly hard

  989. and very frankly

  990. impractical

  991. then you must confess

  992. either that you do not know

  993. the Lord Jesus Christ

  994. and the expectations

  995. of His word

  996. are just beyond

  997. your imagination

  998. or

  999. you are a believer

  1000. who is not appreciating

  1001. the blessing

  1002. of living much

  1003. of the Christian life

  1004. with the power

  1005. of the indwelling Spirit.

1006. You know what Jesus said

  1007. to His disciples?

  1008. He said,

  1009. listen

  1010. it's a good thing

  1011. that I'm going

  1012. because guess what?

  1013. You get the Spirit.

  1014. It's good for you.

  1015. You need the Spirit.

  1016. That brings me

  1017. to one more

  1018. incredible truth

1019. and I'll close with it.

1020. Go back to the passage

  1021. in John

  1022. and just be struck

1023. by what it says there

  1024. in John chapter 13

    John 13:35

  1025. verse 35.

  1026. By this all people

  1027. will know

  1028. that you're my disciples

  1029. if you have love

  1030. for one another.

  1031. By this

  1032. all people

  1033. will know

  1034. that you are

  1035. my disciples

  1036. because you have

  1037. love for one another.

  1038. Now it's not

  1039. the only way

  1040. that the unbelieving

  1041. world knows

  1042. that we're His

  1043. disciples

  1044. and the unbelieving

  1045. world is used

  1046. to looking for

  1047. signals as to

  1048. what your faith

  1049. or your religion

  1050. is.

  1051. I mean hey

  1052. if you're an Amish

  1053. person guess how

  1054. you can pick out

  1055. an Amish person

  1056. if you're up

  1057. around Millersburg.

1058. How do you do it?

  1059. How many

  1060. buttons?

  1061. I mean hey

  1062. what is a zipper?

  1063. Not to be had

1064. by a good Amish man.

  1065. Okay.

  1066. Hats.

  1067. I mean do you

  1068. follow what I'm

  1069. saying?

  1070. I was up in

  1071. I went to

  1072. Lehman's.

  1073. How many of you

  1074. know Lehman's?

  1075. I had to go.

  1076. Okay.

  1077. And sure enough

  1078. there was buggy

  1079. parking.

  1080. I didn't park there

  1081. but you know

  1082. you can tell

  1083. the Amish.

  1084. How many of you

  1085. can pick out

  1086. a Muslim?

  1087. How many of you

  1088. can pick out

  1089. a Muslim today?

  1090. What's a giveaway

  1091. of a Muslim woman?

  1092. What?

  1093. Are we this

  1094. culturally

  1095. a headscarf?

  1096. I mean

  1097. I was at

  1098. Home Depot

  1099. the other day

  1100. and there's a guy

  1101. there named

  1102. Mohammed.

  1103. I'm a frequent

  1104. flyer at Home Depot.

  1105. They know me

  1106. and I'm talking

  1107. to the guy

  1108. and I noticed

  1109. that he had

  1110. actually left

  1111. where he was

  1112. working normally

  1113. and he was

  1114. walking around

  1115. with a young lady

  1116. and an older woman

  1117. and I could tell

  1118. by the way

  1119. they were talking

  1120. that they were

  1121. related and so

  1122. I said to Mohammed

  1123. I said

  1124. I want to tell

  1125. your mother

  1126. that you are

  1127. a fine young man

  1128. and I held out

  1129. my hand.

  1130. Mohammed said

  1131. oh

  1132. she won't touch

  1133. that.

  1134. Tim Kenoyer

  1135. should know better

  1136. it's like

  1137. I'm sorry

  1138. Muslim women

  1139. do not what?

  1140. What?

  1141. What?

  1142. What?

  1143. They don't touch

  1144. the hands of men

  1145. I mean

  1146. die and go to

  1147. wherever

  1148. you know

  1149. but

  1150. can you pick out

  1151. Muslims?

  1152. Yes.

  1153. How many of you

  1154. can pick out

  1155. Sikhs?

  1156. Do you know

  1157. what a Sikh is?

  1158. Sikhs.

  1159. How many of you

  1160. have seen Sikhs

  1161. with turbans?

  1162. They never

  1163. cut their hair

  1164. never cut

  1165. their hair

  1166. in all

  1167. of life.

  1168. It does

  1169. fall out

  1170. occasionally

  1171. but

  1172. a Sikh

  1173. also wears

  1174. a steel

  1175. bangle

  1176. around his

  1177. wrist

  1178. if he's

  1179. a good

  1180. one.

  1181. So Jesus

  1182. says

  1183. you don't

  1184. have to

  1185. wear a

  1186. steel

  1187. bangle

  1188. you don't

  1189. have to

  1190. have a

  1191. dot

  1192. you know

  1193. what a

  1194. tikka is

  1195. right here

  1196. between the

  1197. eyebrow

  1198. if you're

  1199. a Hindu

  1200. our

  1201. neighbor

  1202. put out

  1203. a website

  1204. called

  1205. connect

  1206. the dots

  1207. it's a

  1208. little bit

  1209. like

  1210. e-harmony

  1211. for

  1212. Hindus

  1213. okay

  1214. took you

  1215. a while

  1216. I know

  1217. it's a

  1218. little slow

  1219. on the

  1220. uptake

  1221. you know

  1222. but

  1223. connect

  1224. the dots

  1225. duh

  1226. so how

  1227. do you

  1228. pick out

  1229. Christians

  1230. huh

  1231. no red

  1232. dots

  1233. no lots

  1234. of hair

  1235. you know

  1236. you

  1237. we

  1238. are to

  1239. be

  1240. marked

  1241. by our

  1242. deep

  1243. love

  1244. for

  1245. one

  1246. another

  1247. our

  1248. deep

  1249. love

  1250. for

  1251. one

  1252. another

  1253. and I

  1254. thought

  1255. very

  1256. quickly

  1257. just

  1258. what

  1259. was

  1260. the

  1261. early

  1262. church

  1263. so

  1264. good

  1265. at

  1266. that

  1267. there's

  1268. a lot

  1269. of

  1270. history

  1271. about

  1272. how

  1273. the

  1274. early

  1275. church

  1276. took

  1277. care

  1278. of

  1279. each

  1280. other

  1281. and

  1282. you

  1283. can

  1284. work

  1285. through

  1286. the

  1287. book

  1288. of

  1289. Acts

  1290. you

  1291. can

  1292. work

  1293. through

  1294. books

  1295. on

  1296. church

  1297. history

  1298. for

  1299. one

  1300. they

  1301. cared

  1302. for

  1303. one

  1304. another

  1305. in

  1306. times

  1307. of

  1308. need

  1309. remember

  1310. in

  1311. the

  1312. early

  1313. church

  1314. in

  1315. the

  1316. book

  1317. of

  1318. !

  1319. Acts

  1320. church

  1321. but

  1322. there

  1323. were

  1324. people

  1325. who

  1326. got

  1327. the

  1328. idea

  1329. that

  1330. hey

  1331. why

  1332. work

  1333. and

  1334. what

  1335. did

  1336. Paul

  1337. say

  1338. if

  1339. you

  1340. don't

  1341. work

  1342. you

  1343. don't

  1344. eat

  1345. so

  1346. we

  1347. see

  1348. the

  1349. pendulum

  1350. going

  1351. back

  1352. and

  1353. forth

  1354. but

  1355. they

  1356. were

  1357. willing

  1358. to

  1359. help

  1360. each

  1361. other

  1362. the

  1363. early

  1364. church

  1365. rescued

  1366. abandoned

  1367. babies

  1368. to the

  1369. point

  1370. that

  1371. a lot

  1372. of

  1373. people

  1374. came

  1375. to

  1376. Christ

  1377. through

  1378. the

  1379. ministry

  1380. of

  1381. the

  1382. early

  1383. church

  1384. and

  1385. rescuing

  1386. abandoned

  1387. babies

  1388. they

  1389. took

  1390. care

  1391. of

  1392. the

  1393. sick

  1394. that's

  1395. really

  1396. interesting

  1397. isn't

  1398. it

  1399. if

  1400. norovirus

  1401. had

  1402. happened

  1403. in the

  1404. lobby

  1405. of

  1406. the

  1407. new

  1408. testament

  1409. church

  1410. how

  1411. do

  1412. you

  1413. think

  1414. the

  1415. church

  1416. would

  1417. have

  1418. acted

  1419. I

  1420. won't

  1421. go

  1422. there

  1423. email

  1424. me

  1425. they

  1426. protected

  1427. one

  1428. another's

  1429. reputation

  1430. okay

  1431. so

  1432. when

  1433. someone

  1434. comes

  1435. to

  1436. you

  1437. and

  1438. has

  1439. something

  1440. to

  1441. say

  1442. you

  1443. can

  1444. say

  1445. hey

  1446. how

  1447. did

  1448. it

  1449. go

  1450. when

  1451. you

  1452. practice

  1453. Matthew

  1454. 18

  1455. step

  1456. one

  1457. to

  1458. go

  1459. real

  1460. well

  1461. they

  1462. protected

  1463. one

  1464. another's

  1465. reputation

  1466. they

  1467. spoke

  1468. well

  1469. of

  1470. one

  1471. another

  1472. and

  1473. they

  1474. served

  1475. one

  1476. another

  1477. I'll

  1478. tell

  1479. you

  1480. one

  1481. of

  1482. the

  1483. things

  1484. that

  1485. has

  1486. been

  1487. a

  1488. consistent

  1489. testimony

  1490. of

  1491. this

  1492. ministry

  1493. has

  1494. been

  1495. the way

  1496. we

  1497. take

  1498. care

  1499. of

  1500. each

  1501. other

  1502. when

  1503. people

  1504. are

  1505. sick

  1506. and

  1507. when

  1508. people

  1509. need

  1510. to

  1511. move

  1512. and

  1513. over

  1514. and

  1515. over

  1516. again

  1517. when

  1518. we

  1519. are

  1520. John

  1521. where

  1522. are

  1523. you

  1524. when

  1525. you

  1526. left

  1527. your

  1528. neighborhood

  1529. everybody

  1530. I gotta

  1531. hire

  1532. two

  1533. men

  1534. in

  1535. a

  1536. truck

  1537. and

  1538. they're

  1539. not

  1540. very

  1541. happy

  1542. and

  1543. all

  1544. these

  1545. people

  1546. parked

  1547. up and

  1548. down

  1549. the

  1550. streets

  1551. carrying

  1552. boxes

  1553. and

  1554. you

  1555. know

  1556. having

  1557. a

  1558. great

  1559. time

  1560. so

  1561. we

  1562. are

  1563. to

  1564. be

  1565. marked

  1566. by

  1567. the

  1568. joy

  1569. of

  1570. spirit

  1571. enabled

  1572. obedience

  1573. and

  1574. we

  1575. are

  1576. to

  1577. be

  1578. marked

  1579. in

  1580. such

  1581. a

  1582. fashion

  1583. that

  1584. the

  1585. unbelieving

  1586. world

  1587. looks

  1588. at

  1589. the

  1590. way

  1591. we

  1592. care

  1593. for

  1594. one

  1595. another

  1596. and

  1597. says

  1598. wow

  1599. they

  1600. must

  1601. be

  1602. following

  1603. Jesus

  1604. so

  1605. let's

  1606. close

  1607. in a

  1608. practical

  1609. way

  1610. I

  1611. would

  1612. venture

  1613. to say

  1614. that the

  1615. truth of

  1616. the matter

  1617. is

  1618. is that

  1619. every

  1620. one

  1621. of us

  1622. here

  1623. have

  1624. more

  1625. to do

  1626. at

  1627. learning

  1628. to

  1629. love

  1630. like

  1631. Jesus

  1632. loved

  1633. isn't

  1634. that

  1635. right

  1636. and

  1637. if

  1638. you're

  1639. kind

  1640. of

  1641. giving

  1642. yourself

  1643. a

  1644. pat

  1645. on

  1646. the

  1647. back

  1648. go

  1649. back

  1650. to

  1651. that

  1652. list

  1653. of

  1654. three

  1655. people

  1656. you're

  1657. really

  1658. struggling

  1659. with

  1660. Jesus

  1661. doesn't

  1662. have

  1663. people

  1664. like

  1665. that

  1666. on

  1667. his

  1668. list

  1669. for

  1670. the

  1671. reasons

  1672. you

  1673. have

  1674. them

  1675. there

  1676. and

  1677. you

  1678. go

  1679. to

  1680. the

  1681. Lord

  1682. and

  1683. say

  1684. Lord

  1685. I

  1686. want

  1687. the

  1688. enabling

  1689. of

  1690. the

  1691. Spirit

  1692. of

  1693. God

  1694. to

  1695. love

  1696. like

  1697. you

  1698. do

  1699. I

  1700. want

  1701. to

  1702. love

  1703. others

  1704. like

  1705. Jesus

  1706. loves

  1707. me

  1708. let's

  1709. close

  1710. in

  1711. prayer

  1712. God

  1713. to

  1714. Father God

  1715. this

  1716. morning

  1717. as we

  1718. attend

  1719. to

  1720. the

  1721. word

  1722. of

  1723. God

  1724. we

  1725. recognize

  1726. that

  1727. it

  1728. speaks

  1729. with

  1730. authority

  1731. in

  1732. our

  1733. lives

  1734. and

  1735. its

  1736. purpose

  1737. is to

  1738. help us

  1739. see the

  1740. Lord

  1741. Jesus

  1742. Christ

  1743. Lord

  1744. of

  1745. glory

  1746. Savior

  1747. of

  1748. the

  1749. world

  1750. the

  1751. one

  1752. who

  1753. came

  1754. to

  1755. die

  1756. for

  1757. our

  1758. sins

  1759. and

  1760. rise

  1761. again

  1762. that

  1763. we

  1764. might

  1765. be

  1766. his

  1767. children

  1768. that

  1769. we

  1770. might

  1771. be

  1772. examples

  1773. and

  1774. witnesses

  1775. to

  1776. his

  1777. glory

  1778. and

  1779. Lord

  1780. the

  1781. purpose

  1782. of

  1783. preaching

  1784. is to

  1785. put us

  1786. on the

  1787. spot

  1788. of

  1789. saying

  1790. yes

  1791. or

  1792. no

  1793. to

  1794. God

  1795. and

  1796. this

  1797. morning

  1798. the

  1799. word

  1800. of

  1801. God

  1802. convicts

  1803. us

  1804. that

  1805. we

  1806. who

  1807. know

  1808. Christ

  1809. blood

  1810. bought

  1811. need

  1812. to

  1813. work

  1814. at

  1815. loving

  1816. one

  1817. another

  1818. as

  1819. we

  1820. ought

  1821. to

  1822. we

  1823. don't

  1824. want

  1825. to

  1826. have

  1827. a

  1828. short

  1829. list

  1830. we

  1831. want

  1832. to be

  1833. like

  1834. Jesus

  1835. and

  1836. so

  1837. quietly

  1838. and

  1839. deliberately

  1840. this

  1841. morning

  1842. we

  1843. ask

  1844. for

  1845. your

  1846. spirit

  1847. to

  1848. convict

  1849. us

  1850. and

  1851. that

  1852. from

  1853. this

  1854. day

  1855. forward

  1856. we

  1857. are

  1858. growing

  1859. in

  1860. our

  1861. love

  1862. in

  1863. a

  1864. conscious

  1865. and

  1866. deliberate

  1867. fashion

  1868. and

  1869. we'll

  1870. give

  1871. you

  1872. the

  1873. glory

  1874. we

  1875. ask

  1876. in

  1877. Jesus

  1878. name

  1879. amen

  1880. let's

  1881. stand

  1882. together

  1883. as

  1884. we

  1885. sing

  1886. and

  1887. to
