  1. We are making what I think is a safe assumption that you know that your children are dismissed

  2. ! I do love listening to you sing, but I really like saying, turn in your Bibles.

  3. So I want you to turn to John chapter 13. We're going to look at verse 36 through 38 this morning.

    John 13 chapter mention

  4. Before we do that, I want to say greetings to Rich and Christy and their family. All of you are here.

  5. Would you stand up, please? I just have to see you at full length.

  6. I was praying for Rich.

  7. Rich, I sent him a text.

  8. And he said, oh, I'll be in church on Sunday.

  9. I thought, wow.

  10. I wish everybody I prayed for were here today.

  11. Well, Rich, would you pray for me as I preach this morning?

  12. And I drink.

  13. Thank you.

  14. Thank you.

  15. Thank you.

  16. Thank you.

  17. Thank you.

  18. Thank you.

  19. Thank you.

  20. Thank you.

  21. Thank you.

  22. Thank you.

  23. Thank you.

  24. and I put those out for you is so that they'll kind of serve as a compass point,

  25. something to kind of focus you and lock your mind in on some essential truth

  26. for your benefit and for His glory.

  27. For one, I want to remind you of this fact that all things in Scripture are valuable.

  28. We have a tendency, there's some passages that we really lock in and we appreciate,

  29. and we, oh man, that's great.

  30. But the Scriptures make it clear that all Scripture is given by inspiration

  31. and is profitable that the man of God may be completely furnished,

  32. completely equipped for every good work.

  33. And so when we hit some of those passages that we're naturally inclined to kind of,

  34. yeah, yeah, I got that one, step on, don't do it.

  35. Ask the Spirit of God to enable you in your study

  36. and your appreciation for the Word that He has given to us

  37. to dig in and understand what is this passage here for

  38. and how does it apply, what does it do

  39. in equipping my heart for godliness and leading me in the path of righteousness.

  40. There's another thing that I think is important for us to remember,

  41. and that is that when we're in the Scriptures,

  42. it's always important to remember that really the center point,

  43. the focal point of Scripture is the Lord Jesus Christ.

  44. I like the fact that John's Gospel tells us over in John 20, verse 31,

    John 20:31

  45. what the theme and the purpose of the book of John is.

  46. What is it?

  47. Does anybody remember offhand?

  48. These things are written so that you can feel really good about yourself.

  49. Am I right?

  50. Now, just check in to see if you've been listening to Dr. Phil this morning.

  51. These things are written that you might know that Jesus is the Christ

  52. and believing you might have eternal life.

  53. Now, I may have lost a word or so,

  54. but the point is the heart of Scripture is the Lord Jesus Christ.

  55. Isn't that right?

  56. And we're going to see that again this morning as we step into this passage.

  57. Ultimately, all Scripture is there to lift up the supremacy

  58. and the glory of the Lord Jesus,

  59. and that's why we're here this morning,

  60. that we find our supreme satisfaction and our delight

  61. in the person and the work of Christ.

  62. And so this morning as we are looking at this text,

  63. we are kind of reminded that we're dealing with a rather sordid moment,

  64. a very sad moment in the life of Peter.

  65. How many of you would like everybody to remember perfect things about you,

  66. your most glorious moments?

  67. And yet the Scriptures record the incessant failures of men

  68. that God used for His glory.

  69. And here we are, we're looking at Peter's life,

  70. and we're picking up on one of the just abject failures of this individual

  71. that leaves us kind of wondering,

  72. oh, how could Peter do that?

  73. And a fair question is, so why is it here?

  74. And we'll get into that a little bit more.

  75. But I do want you to understand that this failure of Peter

  76. appears in all four Gospels.

  77. That's interesting.

  78. I don't mean to suggest that there's kind of a value structure

  79. that anything that appears in only one Gospel

  80. is not as valuable as something that appears in all four Gospels.

  81. And the point I would make is that

  82. most of what we find in chapter 13 all the way to 17,

  83. the upper room discourse and some of the things

  84. that happened in the last five hours of Christ's life

  85. prior to the cross happens only in the book of John.

  86. And that doesn't mean to suppose that that must be less valuable

  87. than what we find in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

  88. But it is noteworthy that here we have this particular incident

  89. in the life of Peter the Apostle recorded in all four Gospels.

  90. And for the most part, we're not going to jump back and forth

  91. between the other Gospels, but we do want to recognize

  92. that we're going to pick up some detail there

  93. that will help us understand just the depth of the failure of Peter.

  94. Here we are within hours of the cross,

  95. and we find Jesus ministering in a very, very pointed

  96. and deliberate way to those that He was going to die for.

  97. We saw earlier in our study in the book of John

  98. His affection and His tenderness to Judas,

  99. and we think, wow, how could He do that

  100. to a person who He knew was going to betray Him?

  101. Now you find Him doing something similar in the life of Peter

  102. who was going to deny Him in just a few minutes.

  103. So as we step into the text, we begin there in verse 36,

  104. Simon Peter said to Him,

  105. Lord, where are you going?

  106. I want you to look first of all at a picture of pride.

  107. That's what this is, pride.

  108. How many of you have ever been involved in a conversation

  109. and you're trying to make a meaningful point to someone

  110. that you really care about,

  111. and the minute you take a breath,

  112. they step in with something that is not related at all?

  113. Have you ever been there?

  114. They have been waiting to let you know how important they are.

  115. And none of you have ever done that,

  116. but you've experienced it, right?

  117. And here's Peter.

  118. Jesus has been pouring His heart out.

  119. He has broken the bread and He's shared the cup,

  120. and He says,

  121. this cup is the cup of New Testament in my blood.

  122. This bread is broken for you.

  123. He's talking about the cross.

  124. He speaks about the fact that He is going to be betrayed.

  125. And all through this,

  126. you can kind of get the sense in this passage

  127. that here is Peter.

  128. Just as soon as Jesus finishes talking,

  129. Peter starts off in a completely different direction.

  130. It's kind of like Jesus is saying,

  131. yeah, I'm going to die for you.

  132. I do want you to really work at loving each other

  133. because this business of loving each other,

  134. it's not like you've got your hands all around this.

  135. You need some help.

  136. You need some reminder.

  137. And as soon as Peter has an opportunity,

  138. yeah, well, I understand what you're saying is important,

  139. but let me tell you something else.

  140. I've been listening.

  141. Where are you going?

  142. What's up?

  143. Where are you going?

  144. And when you find this little statement made by Peter,

  145. it is kind of a very sober reminder to all of us

  146. that we would be well served

  147. if we would be better listeners to what Jesus has to say

  148. rather than thinking about our own agenda all the time.

  149. Here's Peter not picking up the details.

  150. Well, I want you to look at another of the gospel accounts,

  151. and so keep your finger in John.

  152. We're going to come back to it in a minute,

  153. but turn, if you will, over to Matthew 26.

  154. As we look at the passage in Matthew as well,

  155. we're going to pick up some details

  156. that help us understand the circumstances

  157. and the setting a little better.

  158. Matthew 26, verse 31.

    Matthew 26:31

  159. Verse 30 says,

  160. And when they'd sung a hymn,

  161. they went out to the Mount of Olives.

  162. Then Jesus said to them,

  163. You will all fall away because of me this night,

  164. for it is written,

  165. I will strike the shepherd,

  166. and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.

  167. But after I am raised up,

  168. I will go before you to Galilee.

  169. Peter answered him,

  170. Though they all fall away because...

  171. I will never fall.

  172. Can you hear it?

  173. There's a guy that's pretty full of himself, isn't he?

  174. You know, yeah.

  175. The rest of these guys,

  176. I don't know why you picked them,

  177. but yeah, I expect them to fall away.

  178. They're a low life, you know.

  179. They're not very well spiritually founded,

  180. and they're not where I am.

  181. They may fall, but not me.

  182. I'm with this one.

  183. I'm okay.

  184. Okay.

  185. So here you have Peter.

  186. How many of you have ever wondered

  187. just what a loose cannon Peter really was?

  188. Have you ever kind of...

  189. Why did you pick him?

  190. I debated back and forth about telling the story,

  191. but I will.

  192. It's always dangerous when pastors debate stories

  193. and then go ahead anyway.

  194. Am I right, Pastor Sherris?

  195. Like afterwards, you have an opportunity to say,

  196. I shouldn't have done it, but here we go.

  197. When I think about the Bible picture of Peter,

  198. it kind of gives me a great deal of hope

  199. that if God can use someone like Peter,

  200. he probably...

  201. I've got some hope and encouragement, right?

  202. I got to tell you,

  203. when I was growing up,

  204. my parents went out of their way

  205. to see to it that the Kenoyer children

  206. had every conceivable opportunity

  207. of being enculturated.

  208. I learned how to eat chicken

  209. with a fork and knife instead of my fingers.

  210. It was a long process

  211. and really not one that I keep handy anymore,

  212. but I learned how to eat chicken

  213. with a fork and a knife,

  214. and there are all kinds of things that went well.

  215. My parents, as we were traveling

  216. back and forth from India,

  217. missionaries in India,

  218. they made it a point to take us

  219. to every dog and pony show.

  220. There were places we went,

  221. dog and pony show.

  222. You're wondering what that's all about.

  223. Were they really into dogs and ponies?

  224. No, no, no.

  225. We went to all kinds of significant,

  226. historic museums.

  227. We saw them all.

  228. All different kinds of cathedrals

  229. through Europe.

  230. One place that I remember distinctly

  231. was St. Peter's Basilica.

  232. Does anybody know where

  233. St. Peter's Basilica is?

  234. It is in Rome.

  235. It is the center point.

  236. I remember St. Peter's Basilica

  237. for two particular reasons.

  238. One is that there was a central place

  239. below grade where Peter was supposedly buried.

  240. And my brother Mark

  241. decided that he would stick his head,

  242. he couldn't see over top.

  243. He was short.

  244. So he stuck his head down through.

  245. How many of you know how balusters are carved?

  246. You know, they're kind of carved like this.

  247. And so he stuck his head down through low

  248. and he looked to try to get a better picture

  249. of where Peter was buried.

  250. And then when he decided it was time

  251. to remove his head,

  252. he lifted it up,

  253. got it stuck.

  254. Now Mark,

  255. Mark,

  256. at that point,

  257. was a little poorly developed

  258. in terms of logic.

  259. And he thought,

  260. if he pulled harder,

  261. it would work better.

  262. And it just,

  263. do you know what it caused?

  264. It got stuck worse.

  265. And then the thought

  266. of being permanently

  267. snared

  268. in St. Peter's Basilica,

  269. staring down at Peter's grave,

  270. he thought that it was appropriate

  271. to kind of up the ante

  272. and really cry loudly.

  273. So that's one thing I remember.

  274. I remember my brother bellowing

  275. and my father in anguished panic,

  276. reaching over,

  277. pushing his head down,

  278. pushing him out.

  279. We are in the holy of holies

  280. of some kind of faith.

  281. The other thing

  282. that just blew me away,

  283. walking through,

  284. you know,

  285. after we got that one calmed down,

  286. we're walking through

  287. St. Peter's Basilica

  288. and looking at

  289. all this artwork.

  290. There was a bronze statue

  291. of Peter

  292. that had the toe

  293. kind of worn off.

  294. Does anybody know

  295. why St. Peter's toe

  296. is worn off

  297. in St. Peter's Basilica?

  298. Tell me, Mandy, why?

  299. So many people

  300. have kissed

  301. and rubbed

  302. St. Peter's bronze toe

  303. that it's kind of dulled off

  304. and it's lost

  305. some of its,

  306. you know,

  307. distinct features.

  308. I thought,

  309. yeah, you've got to be kidding me.

  310. This guy was,

  311. the one we're looking at

  312. is different

  313. than the ones

  314. in St. Peter's Basilica.

  315. Do you follow

  316. what I want you to do?

  317. I've got to tell you,

  318. here is Peter,

  319. pretty full of himself,

  320. pretty arrogant.

  321. And so,

  322. I want you to think

  323. with me about

  324. several things

  325. that we learn about

  326. Peter in this passage.

  327. For one,

  328. he was dismissive

  329. of the lesson

  330. Jesus taught

  331. on loving the brethren.

  332. He was dismissive

  333. of the lesson

  334. Jesus had taught

  335. about loving the brethren.

  336. Here he was,

  337. Jesus had just finished

  338. his lesson

  339. about loving one another

  340. and instead of saying,

  341. you know what,

  342. I really appreciate

  343. this lesson

  344. and I need that

  345. because I am one

  346. who continues

  347. to struggle

  348. in my love

  349. for everybody else

  350. other than myself.

  351. Here's Peter,

  352. didn't pay any attention

  353. and he says,

  354. yeah, yeah, yeah.

  355. Well,

  356. I understand.

  357. Off he goes.

  358. And I want you

  359. to understand

  360. that when we stop

  361. and think about this,

  362. if we were to rank issues

  363. of importance

  364. in body life

  365. and effective ministry

  366. and mission work

  367. and survivability

  368. and godliness,

  369. what we would have to say

  370. is that loving one another

  371. is really high

  372. on the food chain.

  373. It is essential

  374. to our spiritual well-being.

  375. And here's Peter,

  376. not listening,

  377. full of himself,

  378. not pondering honestly

  379. and with humility

  380. what Jesus had to say

  381. and he was quite ready

  382. to go back

  383. to another point

  384. that Jesus had made earlier.

  385. So I've got to ask you

  386. this question.

  387. How often do you find yourself

  388. sidetracked

  389. from important

  390. spiritual lessons

  391. that God is in the process

  392. of teaching you

  393. and kind of getting buried

  394. on things that are

  395. of secondary

  396. and almost irrelevant importance

  397. like

  398. personal preferences,

  399. Christian liberty

  400. or politics?

  401. I have to tell you

  402. there is a part of me

  403. that is profoundly thankful

  404. that we are past November

  405. almost,

  406. but we're past elections.

  407. I hate to tell you,

  408. whatever happens in Washington

  409. is not as important

  410. as some people

  411. make it out to be.

  412. The kingdom of God

  413. and the work of Christ

  414. is ongoing

  415. no matter who is there.

  416. And so here

  417. I look at Peter

  418. and I'm reminded

  419. that it's pretty easy

  420. to get sidetracked.

  421. And also,

  422. have you ever thought

  423. that you would

  424. step off

  425. on a different path

  426. than your Lord

  427. and loving in structure

  428. and not been willing

  429. to learn the lessons

  430. that he had in front of you?

  431. And so when he says to you,

  432. you need to work

  433. at loving other people.

  434. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

  435. But I am all about

  436. you need to lock down

  437. on things that don't count.

  438. Abiding

  439. in lasting,

  440. faithful love

  441. for the brethren

  442. and is essential.

  443. And so here we see

  444. Peter, the apostle,

  445. instead of learning

  446. the lesson

  447. that Jesus was focused

  448. on teaching him

  449. in the last moments

  450. prior to the cross,

  451. Peter's off on his own.

  452. Second,

  453. I find it stunning

  454. that here we find

  455. Peter disbelieving

  456. the prophetic word

  457. of God through Christ.

  458. Do you hear me?

  459. Peter heard exactly

  460. what Jesus said

  461. about denying him

  462. and yet he was so full

  463. of his own wisdom

  464. and pride

  465. that instead of

  466. trembling

  467. at the prospect

  468. of his own

  469. spiritual failure,

  470. he turned around

  471. and he rebuked Christ

  472. and corrected him.

  473. Would you do that?

  474. Can you imagine

  475. yourself doing that?

  476. Jesus announces,

  477. you're going to deny me.

  478. You're going to walk

  479. away from me.

  480. You're going to turn

  481. your back on me.

  482. And Peter says,

  483. not me.

  484. Now the rest of them,

  485. they may do it.

  486. I mean, you know,

  487. they're not with it,

  488. but I'm going to come through.

  489. And I've got to tell you

  490. that Peter's open denial

  491. of the authority

  492. and the supremacy

  493. of the word of Christ

  494. was a direct rejection

  495. of Christ's infallibility

  496. and the word.

  497. And so I wonder

  498. whether there are times

  499. in your life

  500. where you know the word.

  501. How many of you

  502. have ever sinned

  503. knowing exactly

  504. what the Bible

  505. has to say

  506. about the consequences

  507. of sin

  508. and doing it anyway?

  509. Come on,

  510. everybody raise your hand.

  511. All of us.

  512. We're saying,

  513. you know what?

  514. I don't care

  515. what you say, Jesus.

  516. This is the way

  517. I think anyway.

  518. Don't disbelieve

  519. the prophetic word

  520. of Christ.

  521. There's another thing

  522. that I want you

  523. to recognize,

  524. and here is Peter

  525. in very quick,

  526. closed attitude,

  527. diminishing the danger

  528. of sin.

  529. Look at the passage there

  530. in Matthew chapter 26 again,

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  531. and Peter says,

  532. though they all fall away

  533. because of you,

  534. I will never fall away.

  535. Hey, Jesus warned him.

  536. Peter had his last word,

  537. and instead of thinking

  538. very quickly about,

  539. you know what?

  540. Here is the Son of God,

  541. the Word of God,

  542. the incarnate Word of God

  543. who's telling me

  544. I'm going to fall into sin,

  545. and instead of being

  546. frightened at the prospect

  547. of his own carnality

  548. and wickedness,

  549. here is Peter

  550. having an argument

  551. with Christ.

  552. Peter's quick self-defense

  553. and self-confidence

  554. in his flesh

  555. tell us so much

  556. about Peter's lack of fear

  557. for his own sinfulness.

  558. Everybody listen.

  559. One of the things

  560. that should come

  561. with you getting older

  562. in the faith,

  563. are you listening?

  564. Is you have an increased fear

  565. of the natural tendency

  566. of your heart

  567. to drift left of center.

  568. Peter, as a good Jewish boy,

  569. should have had

  570. Proverbs chapter 16,

    Proverbs 16:18

  571. verse 18,

  572. memorized,

  573. and at the point

  574. of recitation

  575. with one hand tied

  576. behind his back.

  577. Does anybody know

  578. Proverbs 16, 18?

  579. Here we go.

  580. Pride goeth

  581. before destruction

  582. and a haughty spirit

  583. before a fall.

  584. How many of you,

  585. when you find yourself

  586. getting a little bristly

  587. and a little bit

  588. full of yourself,

  589. have the Spirit of God

  590. whisper that obvious verse

  591. in your ear?

  592. Here are a couple

  593. little tests

  594. to tell whether or not

  595. you're convinced

  596. of sin's danger.

  597. They're important,

  598. so I want you

  599. to write them down.

  600. Here are a couple

  601. little tests

  602. to help you

  603. figure out

  604. whether or not

  605. you have a

  606. serious

  607. appreciation

  608. for sin.

  609. Number one,

  610. a healthy prayer life

  611. that reflects

  612. a love for Christ

  613. and a fear

  614. for sin.

  615. How do I know

  616. that I'm where

  617. I need to be

  618. spiritually in relationship

  619. to the struggle

  620. I have with sin?

  621. Number one,

  622. a healthy prayer life

  623. that reflects

  624. a love for Christ

  625. and a fear for sin.

  626. In Matthew 26,

    Matthew 26:41

  627. verse 41,

  628. Jesus said this

  629. to his disciples,

  630. pray,

  631. can anybody finish

  632. the rest,

  633. that you enter

  634. not into temptation.

  635. Bump into a person

  636. that has a prayer life

  637. that is kind of

  638. a microcosm

  639. of what they're

  640. really like

  641. in their thinking.

  642. It's like,

  643. God bless me,

  644. give me a good day,

  645. I'd like to have

  646. good weather,

  647. I'd like to,

  648. you know,

  649. it's like,

  650. what?

  651. That's just a train wreck

  652. in the journey

  653. to where it's going

  654. to happen.

  655. Here's the second thing.

  656. If you have

  657. a conviction

  658. regarding the danger

  659. of sin,

  660. there will be

  661. a cautious

  662. distancing

  663. of yourself

  664. from ungodly

  665. influences.

  666. Over in Psalm 1,

    Psalms 1:1

  667. verse 1,

  668. it says,

  669. blessed is the man

  670. who does not sit,

  671. right?

  672. Walk,

  673. stand,

  674. in the counsel

  675. of the ungodly.

  676. And so you ask yourself,

  677. how much influence

  678. do I expose myself

  679. to that which inclines me

  680. towards ungodliness?

  681. I've got to tell you something.

  682. You don't have to just

  683. be around ungodly people.

  684. You can be affected

  685. by what you listen to,

  686. by what you engage in

  687. and the entertainment

  688. that you enjoy,

  689. by the kind of people

  690. that you're around.

  691. You know what?

  692. I hear an awful lot about,

  693. oh,

  694. I'm all doing this

  695. for ministry.

  696. Really?

  697. Who's poisoning who?

  698. Psalm 1.

  699. Psalm 1.

  700. Blessed is the man

  701. that does not.

  702. It's talking about influence.

  703. Third,

  704. if you're going to have

  705. a sensitivity to sin,

  706. is there a consistent

  707. and affectionate time

  708. in the Word of God?

  709. But his delight,

  710. now let me say it carefully.

  711. I want you to think about this.

  712. His delight is in the law

  713. of the Lord

  714. and in his law

  715. he meditates both day and night.

  716. Do you know what it means

  717. to delight in something?

  718. I'll give you a comparison.

  719. How many of you

  720. were looking forward

  721. to Thanksgiving dinner?

  722. You delight in it.

  723. It happens once a year.

  724. I read an interesting

  725. little blog

  726. that said that

  727. you ought to spend

  728. one day a year

  729. just grumbling

  730. and 364 years

  731. being thankful.

  732. And it's like,

  733. okay,

  734. today's the day

  735. I should be thankful.

  736. Yeah.

  737. Yeah.

  738. Yeah,

  739. forget it.

  740. Yeah.

  741. How many of you

  742. were looking forward

  743. to Thanksgiving dinner

  744. because it's like,

  745. it's turkey.

  746. Yeah.

  747. Brined in case

  748. you want a good bird.

  749. mashed potatoes,

  750. golden Yukons

  751. with the skins on.

  752. You know,

  753. little details

  754. you have to know,

  755. right?

  756. And it's like,

  757. how many of you

  758. in advance

  759. of Thanksgiving dinner

  760. gorged yourself

  761. on potato chips?

  762. Did you do that?

  763. No,

  764. it's like,

  765. I'm coming to the table hungry.

  766. And,

  767. you know,

  768. I'm diabetic,

  769. I'm going to dose myself

  770. a little extra,

  771. but it's okay.

  772. Okay.

  773. Here we go.

  774. One other thing

  775. I want you to see

  776. about Peter,

  777. it strikes me.

  778. That passage

  779. in Matthew chapter 26,

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  780. here he says,

  781. though they all fall away

  782. because of you,

  783. I will never fall away.

  784. Here we find Peter

  785. discrediting other believers.

  786. That's significant.

  787. Read the text

  788. and ask yourself

  789. how often you have thought

  790. ill of others

  791. and suspicioned

  792. their weaknesses

  793. and assumed

  794. that you knew their hearts.

  795. Yeah,

  796. I know what they're thinking.

  797. Do you?

  798. You're right up there

  799. with Jesus.

  800. Oh,

  801. yeah.

  802. Here was Peter,

  803. full of himself,

  804. accusing

  805. and demeaning

  806. other people.

  807. And so here we are

  808. in the shadow

  809. of the cross

  810. looking at Peter

  811. and discovering

  812. that he is far

  813. too much

  814. like each of us

  815. and here is a person

  816. who desperately needs

  817. the grace of Christ.

  818. So,

  819. here's the part

  820. I really like.

  821. That's where we get

  822. to see Jesus.

  823. Isn't that right?

  824. So,

  825. I want us to think

  826. about our gentle

  827. and loving Savior.

  828. Here he is

  829. going back to the passage

  830. in John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  831. Jesus warns

  832. his disciples

  833. of their frailty

  834. and one of the precious

  835. truths of our God

  836. and our Savior

  837. is that

  838. he is good.

  839. And this passage

  840. serves as an illustration

  841. of his goodness

  842. because we see it

  843. in his willing

  844. announcement to us

  845. in advance

  846. of what our frailties

  847. and our weaknesses are

  848. and warning us

  849. of the danger to come.

  850. How many of you know

  851. that this is a characteristic

  852. of God?

  853. He always tells you ahead

  854. what you need.

  855. And he also warns you

  856. of the consequences

  857. of not following

  858. his path.

  859. How many of you

  860. have learned

  861. that people

  862. who are a little hesitant

  863. to share full information

  864. are really not trustworthy

  865. and don't have

  866. your best interest

  867. in heart?

  868. Right?

  869. The nature of Satan

  870. is he doesn't tell us

  871. what the outcome is.

  872. God in his kindness

  873. puts it all out in front

  874. and gives us

  875. all the information

  876. we need

  877. in order to make

  878. a wise decision.

  879. Here is Jesus

  880. saying to his disciples,

  881. listen,

  882. let me tell you something.

  883. Here's what's going

  884. to happen.

  885. And so I want you

  886. to understand

  887. that when we think

  888. about Jesus,

  889. we recognize

  890. that his nature

  891. and his character

  892. is to put it out

  893. there in front

  894. so we know

  895. what's coming.

  896. Jesus guides

  897. and teaches his own.

  898. And he warns them

  899. of sin

  900. and encourages them

  901. to walk in truth.

  902. And this is evident

  903. as we look

  904. at the disciples here.

  905. We see that

  906. they had all

  907. the information

  908. they needed

  909. in order to make

  910. a good decision

  911. and yet what happened?

  912. They didn't.

  913. It's quite evident

  914. that the disciples

  915. over and over again

  916. did not listen

  917. to Christ's counsel

  918. and they suffered

  919. because of the hardness

  920. and the disobedience

  921. of their heart.

  922. So let me ask you

  923. this question

  924. in practical terms.

  925. Are you really listening

  926. to hear the voice

  927. of God

  928. in your ear?

  929. Now,

  930. when I say that,

  931. let me back up

  932. just a little bit

  933. because there are people

  934. that are going

  935. to come to me

  936. and say,

  937. I heard God tell me.

  938. Everybody smile.

  939. I heard God tell me.

  940. I don't buy that.

  941. What I do believe

  942. is that the word of God

  943. is the way

  944. in which we hear

  945. the voice of God.

  946. Can I say that

  947. real,

  948. slowly?

  949. We hear the voice

  950. of God

  951. through the word

  952. of God.

  953. Now,

  954. if what you mean

  955. when you say,

  956. I hear God told me

  957. is that you had

  958. the spirit of God

  959. remind you

  960. of a passage

  961. of scripture

  962. and,

  963. oh,

  964. yeah,

  965. yeah,

  966. I got that.

  967. I got that.

  968. But when a person

  969. comes and tells me,

  970. I heard God tell me

  971. that I should go

  972. to China,

  973. I say,

  974. really?

  975. Where is that

  976. in the Bible?

  977. I mean,

  978. China,

  979. you know.

  980. Should you go

  981. next door

  982. to your neighbor?

  983. Absolutely.

  984. Should you be

  985. an evangelist?

  986. Should you share

  987. the gospel?

  988. Should you be

  989. interested in the

  990. well-being of others?

  991. Yeah,

  992. yeah,

  993. yeah.

  994. Well,

  995. do you follow my point?

  996. So I want you

  997. to recognize here

  998. that when you look

  999. at this case,

  1000. we see that Jesus

  1001. guides.

  1002. He gives instruction.

  1003. There's something else.

1004. I want you to recognize

  1005. that Jesus also lovingly

  1006. corrected Peter's

  1007. self-inflated confidence.

  1008. Question.

1009. How many of you here

  1010. are so abjectly

  1011. grieved by your own

  1012. frailties that you have

  1013. no self-confidence?

  1014. Don't raise your hands.

  1015. Here we go.

  1016. Before Peter fell,

1017. I want you to see

  1018. that we receive

  1019. in the text

  1020. further instruction

  1021. and correction.

  1022. Back in that passage

  1023. in Matthew chapter 26,

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

1024. and I turned away from it

  1025. so back we go.

  1026. Matthew chapter 26,

    Matthew 26:33

  1027. verse 33 and 34.

1028. Listen to what it says there.

  1029. Jesus said to him,

  1030. Truly I tell you

  1031. that this very night

  1032. before the rooster crows,

  1033. you will deny me

  1034. three times.

  1035. Peter said to him,

1036. Even if I must die

  1037. with you,

1038. I will not deny you.

  1039. And all the disciples

  1040. said the same.

1041. Now if you look back

  1042. at John chapter 13,

    John 13 chapter mention

  1043. you're in Matthew,

1044. but go to John chapter 13,

    John 13:38

  1045. verse 38.

1046. Listen to what it says there.

  1047. John 13, 38.

  1048. Jesus answered,

  1049. Will you lay down

  1050. your life for me?

  1051. Truly, truly.

1052. How many of you know

  1053. what truly, truly is?

  1054. Truly, truly is like,

  1055. get this.

  1056. This is it.

1057. I'm telling you the truth.

  1058. Don't miss the point.

  1059. So when Jesus says,

  1060. truly, truly,

1061. what he is saying is,

  1062. pay attention, Peter.

1063. And so I got to tell you

1064. that there are some of you

  1065. here this morning

  1066. that are receiving

1067. the warning signs of God

  1068. about an issue

1069. in your life and heart,

  1070. and Jesus,

  1071. knowing what's going on

  1072. in your thinking,

  1073. is saying,

1074. you need to be really careful.

1075. There's some of you here

1076. that are hearing his warning

1077. about the dangers of bitterness,

  1078. the danger of immorality,

1079. the danger of being full of yourself

  1080. and pride

  1081. and dealing with unforgiveness.

1082. And I got to tell you

  1083. how it works out.

  1084. There's some of you

  1085. saying no to God.

1086. And here are the little indicators.

  1087. When God is dealing

1088. with an issue of sin

  1089. in my life

1090. and an issue of sin

  1091. in your life,

1092. the first thing he does

1093. is he used your conscience

  1094. to prompt you,

  1095. don't do it.

  1096. Don't do that.

  1097. And by the way,

  1098. when God says,

  1099. don't do that,

1100. he always has a little

  1101. parenthetical statement

  1102. that is,

1103. this is not going to glorify me

1104. and it is going to hurt you.

  1105. It's like when a parent says,

1106. do not put that knife

  1107. in the wall socket,

  1108. the kid says,

  1109. yeah.

  1110. Okay.

  1111. So God says,

  1112. don't do it.

1113. The Spirit of God says,

  1114. don't do it.

  1115. The friend says,

  1116. don't do it.

  1117. The wife,

  1118. the dad,

  1119. don't do it.

1120. And when you are unwilling

1121. to listen to the gentle

  1122. prompting of God,

  1123. he will then bring

  1124. harder voices

  1125. and harder issues

  1126. to bear.

  1127. Why?

1128. Because he loves you enough,

1129. he's not going to let you

  1130. get away with it.

  1131. One other thing

1132. that I want you to hold on to

  1133. here about Jesus

1134. and look at Luke chapter 22,

    Luke 22:31

  1135. verse 31,

  1136. and this is one

1137. that just blows me away.

  1138. Okay.

  1139. Okay.

  1140. Okay.

  1141. Okay.

  1142. Okay.

  1143. Okay.

  1144. Simon,

  1145. Simon,

  1146. Satan demanded

  1147. to have you

1148. that he might sift you

  1149. like wheat.

  1150. You remember

  1151. when

1152. in the book of Job

  1153. we find that

  1154. Satan shows up

  1155. in heaven

  1156. and God says,

  1157. hey,

  1158. you been thinking

  1159. about how my

  1160. sermon Job is doing?

  1161. Yeah.

  1162. Yeah.

  1163. Pretty good guy,

  1164. isn't he?

  1165. Yeah.

  1166. Yeah.

1167. But I'll tell you what,

1168. if you let me mess with him,

  1169. he's out.

  1170. Here is Satan

  1171. asking if he

  1172. can trash

  1173. Peter's life.

  1174. Huh?

1175. I want you to listen.

  1176. There's not

  1177. a one of you

  1178. here today

  1179. that is a believer

  1180. that does not

  1181. have the adversary

  1182. that wants to

  1183. absolutely ruin

  1184. your life.

  1185. He is interested

  1186. in destroying you.

  1187. Those who are

  1188. the children of God

  1189. don't lose their salvation

  1190. when they trash

  1191. their lives,

1192. but I'll tell you what,

  1193. they suffer

  1194. and Satan

  1195. wants to ruin

  1196. things.

  1197. There's not

1198. And so here is Jesus saying this to Peter.

1199. But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail,

1200. and when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.

  1201. Do you get that?

1202. Peter, you are pretty full of yourself.

1203. And you are going to suffer because of your stubborn pride.

1204. But it isn't over because I have prayed for you.

1205. And when you come out the other side,

1206. I want you to put your energy into helping other people who will be struggling.

1207. And so I find great consolation.

  1208. I find great encouragement.

1209. In fact, that Jesus bathed the weak and sinful Peter with prayer.

1210. If you're a believer this morning, I've got to tell you something.

  1211. He's praying for you.

  1212. Do you need it?

  1213. Yes.

  1214. Do you need it?

  1215. Yes.

  1216. Hebrews 7, verse 25.

    Hebrews 7:25

1217. And just mark this down and look at it.

  1218. It says,

1219. He ever liveth to make intercession for you.

  1220. What's Jesus doing today?

1221. He is at the throne praying for Tim Kenoyer.

1222. He's at the throne praying for you.

1223. And His present ministry is to hold us up and plead our case and care for our well-being.

1224. So let me close with a few practical words for you to hold on to this morning.

  1225. For one,

1226. The word is settled and sure.

1227. The word is settled and sure.

1228. As you look at this account of Peter, I've got to tell you, what is promised will come about.

1229. And there are some of you here this morning that you're not paying attention to that.

1230. The word is settled and sure.

1231. What Jesus has to say is absolutely certain and it may be relied upon.

1232. Number two, pride goes before destruction.

1233. Isn't it interesting to see this practical illustration of Proverbs 16, 18 in Peter's life, right?

  1234. Huh?

1235. How many of you need stories and pictures?

  1236. We all do.

1237. And so here is Peter, right?

1238. I guarantee you they didn't build that great big basilica because of his real life.

1239. Peter was subject to like passions as I am and you are.

1240. But we have this picture that reminds us pride goes before destruction.

1241. And I've got to tell you that as I read this story of Peter, it would seem that he did learn.

1242. Why do I say that?

1243. Because over in 1 Peter 5, verse 6, here's what it says.

    1 Peter 5:6

  1244. This is Peter.

1245. He is close to dying.

1246. And he has a little bit of advice for the believers that are going to be left behind when he packs it out.

1247. Do you know what he has to say?

  1248. Listen to this.

1249. How many of you have found that you get irritated by things like traffic, by other people's lack of God-honoring punctuality,

1250. by people's lack of consideration for your personal preferences?

1251. I mean, after all, it should be the way I want.

  1252. Do you understand?

1253. Again, humble yourself beneath the mighty hand of God that in due time, what?

  1254. He'll exalt you.

1255. As I read the story of Peter, I am so very thankful that I see an example of someone that over time eventually began to learn humility.

1256. That is one of the benefits of lasting relationships.

1257. I was explaining to someone earlier today in the new membership class, I was explaining that one of the blessings of lasting relationships is you get to see the work of God over time.

1258. You know, pastors are there every two or three years and the next guy comes in after and after.

1259. You don't get to see what God does over time.

1260. You get to see Peter early.

1261. You get to see Peter late.

1262. And you say, wow, if God can do that in Peter's life, he can do it in mine.

1263. Finally, finally, Jesus will not let you go.

1264. I want you to write that down.

1265. Jesus will not let you go.

1266. Jesus will not let you go.

1267. Jesus will not let you go.

1268. If you are here this morning and you are the child of Christ, I got to tell you, the child of God, you don't have to ask the question,

1269. am I going to make it home or not?

1270. And the answer is yes.

1271. And he'll get you there.

  1272. He'll get you there.

1273. He will do whatever is necessary to help you grow in grace.

  1274. And here's the deal.

1275. You can make it easier on yourself or you can just go ahead and test the limits and find out how much he really loves.

1276. Now, can I tell you that from personal experience, it's not a good thing to mess with him when he wants to get you home.

1277. How many of you learned as little children that it's a whole lot better to let your daddy lead you where he's going rather than make him drag you?

1278. I was one that was drugged.

1279. But I got to tell you, Jesus will not let you go.

1280. So let me ask you this question this morning as I close.

1281. Is Jesus really your Savior?

  1282. Is he your Savior?

  1283. Is he your Savior?

1284. Do you have the relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ that Peter had and is here for our sake and edification?

  1285. Does that make sense?

1286. There's no reason to tell this story without seeing Jesus in the center of it.

  1287. Do you know him?

1288. Truth of the matter is, there's some of you here this morning that have, you've heard all the stories.

1289. You can sing all the songs.

1290. But the fact of the matter is that you've never come to the place where you, in absolute, abject humility, have cried out and said,

1291. I am a mess and I need Jesus as my Savior.

1292. The story doesn't end well for those who refuse.

1293. The Savior who came into this world to die for our sins and rise again that we might have salvation,

1294. not through our own efforts, but by his finished work.

1295. And I want to appeal with you, plead with you, if you need Jesus, I've got to tell you, today's the day.

1296. Do not walk out of here in hardness of heart, refusing the sweetness of our Savior.

  1297. Let's close in prayer.

1298. Our Father God, this morning as we lift up the Lord Jesus Christ,

1299. we lift him up in absolute confidence

1300. that Jesus is the Savior of the world, the Lord in glory.

1301. And the day is coming that he will return and all those who know him will enjoy heaven forever.

1302. And those who willingly refuse the sweetness of the gospel

1303. will spend all of eternity in bitter, hard, resentful, angry suffering.

1304. And it is our plea this morning that your spirit would break through the hardness

1305. and bring the gospel in its sweetness.

1306. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
