  1. I beg you to turn for scripture reading, please, to the Old

  2. Testament book of Zechariah, Zechariah Chapter 1.

    Zechariah 1 chapter mention

  3. Zechariah One and reading a few verses from the opening verses,

  4. in the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the

  5. word of the Lord unto Zechariah the son of Barakaya the son of

  6. IDO the Prophet, saying, The Lord has been sore displeased

  7. with your father's. Therefore say thou unto them

  8. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Turn ye unto me, saith the Lord

  9. of hosts. I will turn unto you, saith the

  10. Lord of hosts. Be not as your father's, unto

  11. whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the

  12. Lord of hosts, turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your

  13. evil doings. But they did not hear nor

  14. hearken unto me, saith the Lord your Father's.

  15. Where are they? And the prophets?

  16. Do they live forever? But my words and my statutes was

  17. I commanded my servants, the prophets, did they now take hold

  18. of your Father's? And they returned and said, like

  19. as the Lord of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our

  20. ways, and according to our doings, so have they dealt with

  21. us. Upon the 4th and 20th day of the

  22. 11th month, which is the month Sabbath, in the second year of

  23. Darius, came the word of the Lord unto Zechariah the son of

  24. Berechiah, the son of Widow the prophet, saying, I saw by night,

  25. and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among

  26. the Myrtle trees that were in the bottom, and behind him,

  27. where their red horses speckled and white.

  28. Then said I, Oh my Lord, what are these?

  29. The Angel that talked with me said unto me, I wish you thee

  30. what these be. The man that stood among the

  31. Myrtle trees answered, and said, These are they whom the Lord

  32. hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth.

  33. And they answered the Angel of the Lord that stood among the

  34. Myrtle trees and said, We have walked to and fro through the

  35. earth, and behold, all the earth sitteth still and is at rest,

  36. Amen. We're ending there.

  37. That 11th version of the Lord had his own blessing to the

  38. reading of His word. Amen.

  39. We're all familiar with the freers, like father, like son.

  40. It implies that children have turned out like their parents

  41. and there's no doubt but something of the parents

  42. constitution or characteristics probably found in each one of

  43. us. They may be proud of that, or

  44. you may be disappointed, but it's something we have no

  45. control over. If you discover something in

  46. yourself that you would rather wasn't there, then you may have

  47. to work to overcome and whatever you see as as a shortcoming.

  48. On the other hand, maybe you're honoured to think that somebody

  49. sees something of your father or mother in you.

  50. I trust you love your parents. Never be ashamed of them.

  51. But we can we ask parents, if your children turn out like you,

  52. will you be proud of them? Do they see you as a man or

  53. woman of God? You're, you know, influence is

  54. so important, especially in young people growing up.

  55. Here's a passage of scripture for God warns Israel not to be

  56. like their fathers. The early generations of Israel

  57. had disobeyed the Lord, who brought to reap terrible

  58. consequences. Bible's right when it says that

  59. whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

  60. They had Israel had leaders like Moses, Abraham, Malaysia, godly

  61. kings such as David. Yet in spite of all this, in

  62. spite of all the benefits they enjoyed, they got away from the

  63. Lord, fell into idolatry, despised the Lord.

  64. The the seeds of disobedience always lead to a better harvest,

  65. and that's something Israel was to discover in their case.

  66. That harvest was God's judgement.

  67. God warned the that particular generation of Jews not to be

  68. like their fathers. God gave them those whatever

  69. instructions the Lord gave them earlier in in in life, those

  70. instructions still stood. What he told them a century

  71. earlier was still relevant. Indeed, it is still relevant

  72. even to us today. You see, God's Word is forever

  73. settled in heaven. His Word is unchanging.

  74. God is unchanging. Some few years back somebody

  75. gave us one of those. We tear off calendars were you

  76. as we page for each day of the year and a little motto at the

  77. bottom of each 11 occasion. The motto read the The world

  78. changes so fast that you couldn't stay wrong all the

  79. time. That suggests that things that

  80. were wrong yesterday probably are OK today.

  81. However, that's that's human philosophy.

  82. God, however, is an unchanging God.

  83. He doesn't give some command today and change his mind

  84. tomorrow. His word is forever settled in

  85. heaven. The 10 commandments will never

  86. alter no matter what this world thinks.

  87. And King Charles, not that many months ago, come out with a

  88. statement that the 10 commandments need to be

  89. rewritten. Is that just to suit man's

  90. modern thinking? He's off the rails there if

  91. that's what he thinks God says in Malachi 316 For I am the

  92. Lord, I change not. Therefore ye sons of Jacob are

  93. not consumed. So if it wasn't right for a man

  94. to commit murder or adultery or steal 6000 years ago, it's still

  95. not right today. This world is changing.

  96. New ideas are forever coming to the fore, new methods are always

  97. being brought in, and things are not done today the way they were

  98. even a generation or two ago. I mean even simple things like

  99. learning to read and write. The wee children come home from

  100. school and what they're going through baffles grandparents.

  101. You know what it is baffled me at times to see the way they

  102. they do their arithmetic and the way they pronounce letters and

  103. all the rest is totally different.

  104. This world is changing all the time and sadly not always

  105. changing for the better as far as sin from mankind is

  106. concerned. Men are waxing worse and worse.

  107. And that's just one piece of evidence that the end is near.

  108. Jesus Christ is coming soon. One thing that never changes is

  109. the word of God. And when it comes to the

  110. preaching of the gospel here to you, people are looking for new

  111. methods. It almost seems as if they're

  112. hoping that somewhere that they'll discover, oh, there's a

  113. new way of finding peace with God and that they'll be able to

  114. find assurance of heaven without having to worry about this

  115. repentance and, and giving up their sin and being saved and

  116. all that. If you love anybody who's

  117. thinking or looking for that kind of solution, they're on a

  118. wild goose chase. They're backing up the wrong

  119. tree. No matter what methods may be

  120. employed in presenting the message of the gospel, the old

  121. truths will still stand. Sin is still sin.

  122. Whether men like to talk about it or think about it or not, it

  123. always has been. It always will be sin and the

  124. wages of sin will always be death.

  125. Why? Because God's Word says so.

  126. Sin carries the death penalty and the only way to be cleansed

  127. from sin is by the old. The age-old method of repentance

  128. and crying to God for His mercy and forgiveness.

  129. Blood atonement was the rule back in Genesis.

  130. That hasn't changed, it never will.

  131. What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  132. I mean, if people could get to heaven under their own steam, as

  133. many suppose, there was no need for Christ Jesus to die on a

  134. cross. That's the whole thing.

  135. There was no other way that man could be sealed other than by

  136. putting to death the sinless Lamb of God and and the sooner

  137. then come put his trust in his faith in what Christ

  138. accomplished at Calvary. Away then with modern

  139. philosophies. There is no new method, just old

  140. fashioned repentance and conversion.

  141. As we look into these words and Zechariah, it's just a a couple

  142. of things I want to pick up from this passage concerning Israel.

  143. Firstly, the truth they had to face.

  144. The Jews after their return from Babylon had been extremely

  145. remiss in rebuilding their temple.

  146. Remember the police had was lying in ruins.

  147. They've been gone 70 years. The prophet High guy came among

  148. them preaching the word of God and he sought to stir up the

  149. people to get to work and get the temple put back in order.

  150. As the people of God, they had a duty to do all in their power to

  151. see the work of God go forward, and as long as the temple lay in

  152. ruins, that was a very pure testimony.

  153. Regrettably, High Guy's words weren't heeded as they should

  154. have been for, and so God sent Zachariah to further stir them

  155. into action. None to the same principle, but

  156. a slightly different context. It's often it's often been the

  157. case that when unsealed men and women listen to a certain

  158. preacher, maybe for a number of years, they become accustomed to

  159. his exhortations to repent and believe the gospel.

  160. Many become so used to doing nothing about it they can sit

  161. under the sound of anything he preaches, and they seem totally

  162. unmoved and certainly not moved towards repentance at all.

  163. But then a visiting speaker comes along preaching the same

  164. message, and suddenly they respond and come to Christ.

  165. I don't know, people maybe become complacent.

  166. They say familiarity breeds contempt, and that's very true.

  167. Some can be so used hearing the gospel message, they they could

  168. preach it themselves, but yet they can sit on the side of it

  169. and they never seem to be stirred in their conscience.

  170. This is where we have to urge caution.

  171. If you're on the sea of the sea, whether you're used hearing the

  172. message or not, or used rejecting it or not, accustomed

  173. to neglecting your own soul's great need, do.

  174. Beloved, do be advised. Procrastination could land you

  175. in a lost eternity. We wouldn't wish that on anyone.

  176. But there may come a time when God will suddenly stop speaking

  177. to your soul. And if that happens, you'll be

  178. beyond rescue. And that will be disastrous.

  179. God has said in Genesis 6 and three, my spirit shall not

  180. always strive with man. And the Bible is clear on this

  181. today. Today is the day of salvation,

  182. not tomorrow. This book says boast not thyself

  183. of tomorrow. I know it's not what a day may

  184. bring forth. That's why it's important to be

  185. saved today. There is a time when a person

  186. can't be saved, but there's also a time when he can't.

  187. It's not often enough. It's not enough to be to be told

  188. we need to be saved, need to be told why.

  189. What is it to be saved? It is to recognise that you've

  190. been born in sin. You know, people will argue that

  191. I'm not a Sinner, never do any harm.

  192. A man's not a Sinner because of something he does wrong.

  193. He does wrong because he's a Sinner.

  194. The heart of the problems, the problem of the heart we're born

  195. in. Sin can't help that.

  196. But we all come into this world on the same footing.

  197. Sin is taking lost souls to a lost tournament.

  198. That's why, out of love for your soul, Jesus Christ died on the

  199. cross. He has taken your punishment for

  200. you, and today He offers you the gift of everlasting life through

  201. faith in Himself. Then it's finished work.

  202. It's the message our forefathers received through.

  203. It's the same message for today. Thank God his His Word never

  204. goes out of date and God's Word assures us it's not His will

  205. that any should perish. But it does bring home to us,

  206. your eternity is at stake. This generation of Jews that

  207. Zechariah was addressing here were people whose fathers had

  208. had the word of God, but despised it.

  209. Children are apartment to follow the example of parents, and to

  210. just walk the same path their fathers of trod.

  211. But the prophet here issues this word of caution lest they should

  212. go the same careless way their fathers and forefathers had gone

  213. and that they would miss heaven. We've talked to numerous people

  214. on the doorstep and often hear somebody say I attend such and

  215. such a church. It was good enough from a

  216. father, from a grandfather, it's good enough for me.

  217. Which just emphasises they're putting their dependence upon

  218. church attendance. That's all they have to lean on

  219. or or tradition. But listen, tradition has taken

  220. multitudes to hell and it happens every year.

  221. God says here, your Father's, where are they?

  222. You walk through any cemetery and read the headstones and it's

  223. surprising. It's lovely to read when

  224. somebody has engraved redeemed with the precious blood of

  225. Christ at home with the Lord. I read 1 not so long ago in the

  226. graveyard outside Hillsborough, gone fishing.

  227. The deceased had obviously loved fishing and that's all he was

  228. remembered for, and somebody imagined that now he's gone

  229. fishing somewhere. God help us.

  230. What will it say when your head's done with Christ?

  231. Which is far better or without Christ because you rejected his

  232. mercy, was serious your Father's?

  233. Where are they? It may be intimated here that

  234. even if your Father's received their salvation is of no avail

  235. to you. I can well remember as a child

  236. hearing God speaking voice challenging me about my need of

  237. salvation and for a time I entertained the thought.

  238. When my mum and dad are sealed so I'm I'm sure the Lord will

  239. not be too hard on me. He'll not let me go to hell.

  240. But the Lord had to bring me to that place where I recognised I

  241. just a Sinner. It doesn't matter about my

  242. parents, their salvation are no use to me.

  243. We read in John 112 and 13 but as many as received him to them

  244. give he the power or the right to become the sons of God.

  245. Even to them they believe in His name, which were born not of

  246. blood. So that rules out inheriting

  247. salvation from parents, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of

  248. the will of man, but of God. In other words, with the best

  249. intentions in the world, your friends and your loved ones,

  250. even the praying people of God who want to see you saved, none

  251. of these can save you. It's between you and God, and

  252. you must come yourself, receive Christ into your heart and life

  253. by faith. Why?

  254. Because there's no salvation anywhere else.

  255. Your Father's, where are they? For many of us, our earthly

  256. fathers are in eternity. They live their lives, They walk

  257. the same earth you and I walk. They heard the same gospel that

  258. we hear. They give their response to the

  259. gospel appeal and they either trusted Christ for salvation or

  260. they died without the Saviour and were lost.

  261. It's, it's hard to think about. It was hard for God's servant

  262. here to have to tell these Israelites such news.

  263. But Zechariah was a man who recognised he must one day stand

  264. before God and give account as to how he had breached the word,

  265. what he had done to win souls for Christ.

  266. And we must remember Zechariah is addressing the Jews here.

  267. They are. I'm sure you're aware the Jews

  268. are very family orientated people.

  269. They hold their fathers in very high esteem, blood certainly

  270. thicker than water where they're concerned especially.

  271. And they there were generations of Jews who paid heed to the

  272. message of the gospel as to be seen from reading scripture,

  273. that sometimes one generation after another did walk with God.

  274. But then someone somewhere along the line would would reject that

  275. message. Message that that person and

  276. maybe succeeding generations after him would continue to

  277. reject the Lord till God in his mercy would have to turn the

  278. tide. And again, other generations

  279. would would come and trust the Lord.

  280. Today believing seemed to come and go like just the tide ebbs

  281. and flows. The point is, heed must be given

  282. to the Word irrespective of who the prophet or preacher is.

  283. We read in Luke 16 of a Jew who was wealthy, who saw no need of

  284. the Lord until he died, then it was too late.

  285. He appealed in eternity. He appealed for somebody to send

  286. Abraham to warn the the members of his household still alive on

  287. earth. But.

  288. Abraham said, listen, they have the prophets, let them hear

  289. them. Isn't it too easy to ignore the

  290. preacher who has believed our report?

  291. Isaiah asks. It's true that in many

  292. instances, especially in this country of ours, there there are

  293. many who give a certain mental assent to the gospel.

  294. Some unsealed even comment they they appreciate being told the

  295. truth. There was a fellow walked out of

  296. one of our churches one day and he said to the minister, I love

  297. it when the word hurts. He's not saved.

  298. In fact, he stopped coming to the church.

  299. I love it when it smarts it's but he didn't take it to heart

  300. when it comes to submitting to the word of God and quitting

  301. with sin. People pulled back but God's

  302. words very clear in this except you repent you shall all

  303. likewise perish your Father's where are they are you here this

  304. evening or watching in and you remember a father who loved the

  305. Lord but you thought that ass old fashioned.

  306. That's not for me. It's somebody's Father in heaven

  307. and you're still on your way to a lost sinner's hell.

  308. Did your forefathers pray for you?

  309. Are you going to reject their Saviour, your Father's God?

  310. Would you not trust Christ and follow your Father home to

  311. glory? No, the thought here is the turn

  312. around they must make. Notice the words of these

  313. opening verses in this chapter. In the eighth month, in the

  314. second year of Darius, came the word of the Lord unto Zechariah

  315. the son of Berechai, the son of Idol.

  316. The prophet, saying, The Lord hath been sore displeased with

  317. your father's, therefore say thou unto them.

  318. Thus saith the Lord of hosts. Turn ye unto me, saith the Lord

  319. of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.

  320. Be not as your father's, unto whom the former prophets of

  321. Christ saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Turn ye now from

  322. your evil ways and from your evil doings.

  323. But they did not hear nor hearken unto me, saith the Lord.

  324. And you notice the emphasis there is there on the word of

  325. God. Thus saith the Lord of Hostess

  326. is reiterated over and over. This is the voice of God

  327. speaking. And he said to these people,

  328. Listen, your father's heard the gospel and you're rejecting it.

  329. God in his mercy has sent his word to your father's of

  330. generations of gold. And here people are careless

  331. about the things of God. The failing to give heed to that

  332. word. And basically he's saying,

  333. listen, don't you make the same mistake If your forefathers

  334. rejected the word, Don't you make that mistake?

  335. Notice in verse one that says this was the 8th month.

  336. Here we are. As far as this our calendar is

  337. concerned, the 8th month has just passed.

  338. We're now into the 9th and you still not saved this eighth

  339. month. God was calling these people to

  340. repent. He says.

  341. I'm calling you to quit with sin and be saved before you're

  342. destroyed forever. Zechariah is trying to.

  343. Get these people to understand that if if their fathers were

  344. neglectful of the word of God, they they must not make the same

  345. mistake you. See this question.

  346. In verse 5, your Father's where are they and the prophets?

  347. Do they live forever? Those faithful men of God that

  348. had preached to the generations now gone where themselves called

  349. home to higher service. Let's face it, the.

  350. Preacher, like the listener, must one day leave the scene of

  351. time. Why?

  352. Because it's appointed on the man wants to die.

  353. But after this, the judgement and beloved, every one of us

  354. will be judged, and not only on what we have heard, but on our

  355. response to what we've heard. We cannot treat this gospel

  356. lightly. Shrug your shoulders and say,

  357. well, that's for somebody else, not for me.

  358. God has penned these words so that every one of us might give

  359. attention. We fear for.

  360. Those preachers who fail to warn their congregations to flee from

  361. the wrath to come. How can any man stand before his

  362. congregation and not tell men and women of the Saviour who

  363. died to save them? How can he not advise them that

  364. their sin is going to take them to a lost eternity if they don't

  365. repent? A few years ago.

  366. Some ministers with clerical collars on participated walking

  367. the streets of Belfast in a so-called gay pride parade.

  368. Shame on them. God's curse is upon those who

  369. have wilfully chosen that wicked lifestyle flies in the face of

  370. God. Yet those men who purport to be

  371. men of God had the audacity to show themselves among the

  372. Sodomites and say that isn't this wonderful?

  373. Those same ministers. Would need to repent and believe

  374. the gospel that they so pitifully misrepresent.

  375. They're happy to leave. Their congregations along under

  376. the false pretence. But these sodomites are no

  377. different from the rest of us. Well, in a sense, they're not.

  378. They're just sinners in. Need of the same.

  379. Salvation. All have sinned.

  380. And come short of the glory of God.

  381. And the truth of the matter is, whether a man is a sodomite or

  382. not, if he's unsaved, his sin will take him to hell.

  383. And that includes any ministers who are not saved.

  384. WP Nicholson used to make the remark about clergymen waking up

  385. in hell with their congregations round their feet.

  386. They're waking up all right, but it'll be too late.

  387. But to get back to this. Generation of Israelites whom

  388. Zagar I was addressing. Those people were.

  389. Privileged to be Jews, they belonged to that race of people,

  390. especially blessed by God. But whether they enjoyed special

  391. privilege or not, they still needed to be born again if they

  392. were ever to be in heaven. And dated it has.

  393. To be said the. Jew is probably more accountable

  394. because of his privilege. Scripture records that Christ

  395. Jesus came onto his own. But his own.

  396. Received him not beloved people and Ulster have been specially

  397. privileged. This land has been blessed with

  398. gospel preaching. Some parts of the world have

  399. never yet heard the Gospel message.

  400. They're still heathen tribes living in jungles and certain

  401. parts of this planet. They've never heard the name of

  402. Jesus Christ. You can't say that.

  403. Can you? This land of ours.

  404. Is privileged. But what are you doing with your

  405. privilege? You're not aware that Christ is

  406. your only hope of seeing heaven. You need him.

  407. More than anything else in this life, your father's, where are

  408. they? They're an eternity.

  409. Where will you be? We owe a lot to our forefathers.

  410. I mean a lot of engineering skills have been passed down to

  411. us from what they discovered in their day life's.

  412. Made a lot. Easier for you and me because of

  413. certain inventions brought about by our fathers and our

  414. forefathers. We owe it to so many.

  415. Many maybe even sacrifice their lives to give us the the freedom

  416. we enjoy and in some cases sacrifice their lives to let us
