  1. I'm not sure that it makes a lot of difference, but I'm trying to get my watch where I can see it.

  2. ! Let's begin with prayer.

  3. Our Father God, this morning as we open Your Word, we're mindful that it is settled in the heavens, that it is truth.

  4. It is that which is profitable that the man of God may be completely furnished for all good work.

  5. It is the word of life.

  6. It is the means whereby we are, first of all, convicted of our sin

  7. and drawn to recognize that there is no remedy in ourselves or in our efforts

  8. and drawn by Your grace to the cross and understanding that apart from You, we have no good.

  9. We're thankful that we have the Word in hand and that it is the focal point of our attention this morning,

  10. both in our singing, that woven through all the songs that we have sung is the beauty of the Scriptures,

  11. that as we listen to our pastor pray that we can hear the Word of God resonate in the truth of the prayer.

  12. And then as we take this Word in hand, we're reminded of the fact that it will last forever.

  13. We come with frailty, with ambitions and affections that are so easily distracted,

  14. and yet with confidence in the enabling of the Spirit of God that this morning we who are Your children

  15. would enjoy the privilege of Your work in our lives,

  16. that we would have You open the Word, that we would see wonderful truths there,

  17. and that, frankly, we would grow to be more like the Lord Jesus Christ

  18. and that our ambitions and affections would be focused on eternity rather than here.

  19. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  20. I want you to turn your Bibles this morning to Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  21. Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  22. And as you are going there,

  23. I would venture that there are a number of you that,

  24. as we look at this passage this morning,

  25. would say,

  26. Oh, I've heard that before.

  27. I remember that was one of the passages

  28. that we read on an annual basis

  29. on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning

  30. when our family would get together.

  31. And it's a passage that's very familiar to you.

  32. I have to tell you that when something is very familiar,

  33. there is a natural inclination to kind of,

  34. I've heard that before, ain't no big deal,

  35. and let it set aside.

  36. And I would appeal to you that you don't go there.

  37. That's not right.

  38. When the Word of God is opened,

  39. the children of God

  40. should be actively engaged in appealing to the Spirit

  41. who indwells the believer to say this,

  42. Lord, open your Word

  43. that it might have an effect on me

  44. and that my heart might be warmed

  45. by the beauty of who you are

  46. and what you've done for me.

  47. And that as a result of my attention

  48. to the Word of God,

  49. that I would grow in my love for the Lord Jesus Christ

  50. and my understanding of the mission

  51. that you've called me here for.

  52. And I would appeal to you

  53. that you who know Christ

  54. consciously and deliberately do that.

  55. I think we can multitask,

  56. so let me read

  57. and you pray with your eyes open.

  58. Now that's complicated,

  59. but let's give it a shot, okay?

  60. Luke chapter 2, beginning there in verse 1.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  61. In those days a decree went out

  62. from Caesar Augustus

  63. that all the world should be registered.

  64. This was the first registration

  65. when Quirinius was governor of Syria

  66. and all went to be registered,

  67. each to his own town.

  68. And Joseph also went up from Galilee,

  69. from the town of Nazareth,

  70. to Judea, to the city of David,

  71. which is called Bethlehem,

  72. because he was of the house and lineage of David,

  73. to be registered with Mary,

  74. his betrothed, who was with child.

  75. And while they were there,

  76. the time came for her to give birth.

  77. And she gave birth to her firstborn son

  78. and wrapped him in swaddling clothes

  79. and laid him in the manger,

  80. because there was no place for them in the inn.

  81. And in the same region,

  82. there were shepherds out in the field

  83. keeping watch over their flocks by night.

  84. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them,

  85. and the glory of the Lord shone around them,

  86. and they were filled with fear.

  87. And the angel said to them,

  88. Fear not,

  89. for behold, I bring you good news of great joy

  90. that will be for all the people.

  91. For unto you is born this day in the city of David

  92. a Savior who is Christ the Lord.

  93. And this will be a sign for you.

  94. You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes

  95. and lying in a manger.

  96. I want us to look at this passage,

  97. and as we start into the text,

  98. the first thing that I ask that you pay attention to

  99. is the setting,

  100. because setting is important.

  101. And I want you to recognize

  102. that in the early verses that we've looked at,

  103. particularly 1 through 7,

  104. that the Scripture gives us

  105. quite a bit of practical historical detail.

  106. We know who ordered the registration.

  107. We know who the governor of Syria was.

  108. We know why Joseph and Mary went from

  109. the place that they were living at that time

  110. to Bethlehem,

  111. and we know where Jesus was born.

  112. Not the exact location,

  113. but we know that he was born in a manger.

  114. There's a little one over there, right there.

  115. So we know the details.

  116. And so I want you to think with me

  117. just for a moment

  118. about how carefully the Lord sees to it

  119. that we are given all the information we need

  120. to understand the particulars of this moment.

  121. The Bible is actually quite generous

  122. with factual and historical information

  123. that is easily double-checked.

  124. How many of you as parents have learned

  125. that when your children come up from the basement

  126. and there's been a little bit of tussle down there

  127. and you ask them what happened,

  128. the first giveaway that you need to drill down

  129. pretty seriously is when they say,

  130. nothing.

  131. or not much.

  132. The fact of the matter is

  133. is that generally when there is a conscious

  134. and deliberate focus on not giving information,

  135. it's because the information that might be forthcoming

  136. ends up being indicting.

  137. And so one of the things that I want you

  138. to appreciate about the Scripture

  139. is that the Scripture is profoundly careful

  140. to give you an abundance of information

  141. information that you can actually check.

  142. I remember at one point in my earlier days

  143. having a person giving me the Pearl of Great Price.

  144. Pearl of Great Price.

  145. Does anybody know what that book is?

  146. It is one of the trilogy of Mormon Scriptures

  147. and I remember reading about the Lemonites

  148. and the whatever else

  149. and how there was this wonderful,

  150. fantastical community developed out in the Southwest.

  151. And the only difficulty with the entire story

  152. is that there is no evidence whatever of its existence.

  153. That's not the way it is with the Bible.

  154. When the Bible says something, it can be checked.

  155. Now at one point when archaeology

  156. was kind of developing as a discipline

  157. and an academic skill,

  158. there was a time when people would say,

  159. well, we don't have any record of, you know,

  160. and they would generally speak in their ignorance

  161. and their lack of understanding

  162. and then slowly, sure enough,

  163. someone would find evidence of,

  164. well, there was a Caesar Augustus.

  165. Lo and behold, just because we didn't know about him

  166. here in the Midwest doesn't mean he didn't exist.

  167. And there was an order

  168. that taxation should take place

  169. and everybody should be registered.

  170. You can understand why they would do that.

  171. They want to know how many people

  172. to expect some money from.

  173. And we also know who the governor of Syria was

  174. and all these little details.

  175. And so here, while we have over the years

  176. many individuals who have tried to undermine

  177. the authority of Scripture

  178. by undermining the reality of its accuracy,

  179. God has never backed away

  180. from telling us what we need to know.

  181. In fact, this is one of the things

  182. that I really do like about our God.

  183. He doesn't hide what we need to know

  184. or what is helpful to us.

  185. And I want you to recognize this morning

  186. as you sit here under the teaching

  187. of the Word of God,

  188. no one will ever be able to say

  189. in eternity,

  190. I didn't know better.

  191. The fact of the matter is,

  192. is I was to my,

  193. let me see how I say this right.

  194. My wife says I say it wrong.

  195. Endocrinology, am I right?

  196. Kendra, where are you?

  197. Wave at me so I get it right.

  198. I went to my doctor.

  199. How's that?

  200. And my doctor was explaining,

  201. just a wealth of medical information

  202. and she was advising me on something

  203. to do with my disease.

  204. And I thought, I didn't know that before.

  205. And if I had known that,

  206. probably would have changed some things

  207. earlier on in life

  208. and probably lived to be a little,

  209. maybe another six months.

  210. Who knows?

  211. You know, so the Bible can't be accused

  212. of not giving us all the information we need.

  213. And if you're sitting there

  214. wondering about,

  215. how does the story end?

  216. What should I be doing today?

  217. We find here just an illustration

  218. of the fact that the Bible

  219. goes out of its way

  220. to tell us all that we need.

  221. And so in addition to the historical facts,

  222. I want you to recognize

  223. that what we're dealing with here

  224. is that we find that God chose

  225. to bring this announcement

  226. of the coming of His Savior,

  227. our Savior, His Son, the Messiah.

  228. He made the announcement to shepherds.

  229. Now we have kind of idealized shepherds.

  230. We think shepherds are the sweetest

  231. and nicest thing ever going

  232. and you're going to see shepherds tonight

  233. that are going to be scared to death

  234. when three lovely angels,

  235. I think, is it three or four?

  236. I don't know.

  237. But anyway, they're going to come out

  238. and they're, behold,

  239. I'll give you a good tiding.

  240. The shepherds are going to fall down.

  241. It's well dramatized.

  242. But I got to tell you,

  243. in real life,

  244. shepherds were not the kind of individuals

  245. that you would have called on

  246. if you wanted to make

  247. an important announcement.

  248. And the reason for that is this,

  249. is that shepherds

  250. were generally very unreliable,

  251. irresponsible,

  252. and disrespected bunch.

  253. So much so that in Israel at the time

  254. in which this announcement was made,

  255. as a general rule,

  256. shepherds were not allowed

  257. to be witnesses in court.

  258. Now that tells you something, doesn't it?

  259. Generally, you know that

  260. when you want someone to witness in court,

  261. what you're looking for

  262. is someone who has an adequate reputation

  263. that their words should be believed.

  264. Shepherds had such a lousy reputation

  265. that it was generally,

  266. hey, we're not just a shepherd

  267. to tell us anything.

  268. Let it go.

  269. And so here, God comes,

  270. and He gives the announcement

  271. of sending His Son, the Messiah,

  272. to shepherds.

  273. Ask yourself the question,

  274. why would God do that?

  275. Is that a fair question?

  276. Why would God send the message

  277. of the coming of His Son

  278. to shepherds in principle?

  279. Why didn't He choose

  280. the religious leaders of the day?

  281. Why didn't He emblazon it

  282. in the sky,

  283. right over the horizon

  284. of Jerusalem in particular?

  285. Hello out there,

  286. my Savior, my Son has come.

  287. He is the Savior.

  288. You better listen to Him.

  289. Now by the way,

  290. how many of you know

  291. that the second time He comes

  292. is going to be much more

  293. undeniably clear, right?

  294. The first time,

  295. without fanfare,

  296. sews up to the shepherds,

  297. and you have to ask yourself

  298. the question,

  299. why would God do it this way?

  300. Well, let me give you

  301. a little hint

  302. as to His purposes.

  303. Turn over in your Bible,

  304. if you will,

  305. to 1 Corinthians 1.

  306. 1 Corinthians 1,

    1 Corinthians 1:27–31

  307. verse 27 through 31.

  308. Here is the apostle

  309. teaching the believers in Corinth

  310. some of the basic principles

  311. about God in His dealing with us.

  312. There in verse 27,

  313. he says,

  314. but God chose what is foolish

  315. in the world to shame the wise.

  316. He chose what is weak in the world

  317. to shame the strong.

  318. God chose what is low

  319. and despised in the world,

  320. even things that are not,

  321. to bring to nothing things that are,

  322. so that no human being

  323. may boast in the presence of God.

  324. And because of Him,

  325. you are in Christ Jesus,

  326. who became to us wisdom from God,

  327. righteousness and sanctification

  328. and redemption,

  329. so that as it is written,

  330. let the one who boasts

  331. boast in God.

  332. I want you to think with me

  333. just for a moment

  334. why God chose to use the shepherds

  335. is because He wanted carefully

  336. for no other focus

  337. to be attached to the information

  338. other than on the news

  339. of Christ's coming Himself,

  340. and that was it.

  341. He didn't want people arriving

  342. and saying,

  343. aren't you glad I have come

  344. to give you this wonderful news,

  345. and I am expected and appreciated,

  346. and here I am.

  347. You know, it's like,

  348. no, shepherds were the ones

  349. who were told.

  350. Another interesting detail

  351. of God's work

  352. in announcing Christ's birth

  353. is that the event,

  354. ultimately, got lost.

  355. And what I mean by that

  356. is that it had some momentary traction

  357. in the history of Israel,

  358. but it soon faded off the page.

  359. Turn, if you will,

  360. you're there in 1 Corinthians,

  361. go back to Matthew for a moment,

  362. I want you to look

  363. at Matthew chapter 2.

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  364. Let me read the passage to you

  365. so you can follow with me here.

  366. Now, after Jesus was born

  367. in Bethlehem in Judea

  368. in the days of Herod,

  369. the king, behold,

  370. wise men from the east

  371. came to Jerusalem.

  372. Now, what happened first?

  373. Shepherds, wise men.

  374. Shepherds.

  375. And the announcement

  376. of the shepherds

  377. got kind of what?

  378. Oh yeah, so what?

  379. No big deal.

  380. Shepherds.

  381. They said,

  382. here come the wise men,

  383. saying,

  384. where is he who has been born

  385. king of the Jews?

  386. For we saw his star

  387. when it rose

  388. and have come to worship him.

  389. When Herod the king heard this,

  390. he was troubled.

  391. And by the way,

  392. when Herod was troubled,

  393. guess what happened

  394. to everybody who was near him?

  395. They got troubled.

  396. Understandably.

  397. It's a little bit like

  398. the despot

  399. over there in North Korea.

  400. When he has a cold,

  401. there are lots of people

  402. that die as a result of it.

  403. He is not a happy man

  404. to be around.

  405. Herod was like that.

  406. And so here we find

  407. that Herod was troubled

  408. and all of Jerusalem

  409. with him.

  410. And as a result

  411. of his concern

  412. or his fear

  413. of someone else

  414. taking his place,

  415. he had just a whole,

  416. two years and under,

  417. slaughtered.

  418. The children,

  419. the men,

  420. the boys.

  421. And so the thing

  422. that I want you to recognize

  423. as you're thinking

  424. about the story

  425. of Christmas

  426. is here is

  427. the Lord Jesus arriving,

  428. born of a virgin,

  429. born in a manger.

  430. And the fact of the matter

  431. is is that

  432. most everything

  433. that happened

  434. was just kind of

  435. looked over

  436. and passed over

  437. and people did not

  438. pay much attention to it.

  439. It reminds me

  440. of what we read

  441. over in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  442. Let's go there

  443. just for a moment

  444. to frame that thought

  445. in our minds.

  446. John chapter 1

    John 1:10

  447. verse 10.

  448. He was in the world

  449. and the world

  450. was made through him

  451. yet the world

  452. did not know him.

  453. He was in the world.

  454. The world was made

  455. through him

  456. and yet

  457. the fact of the matter is

  458. the world

  459. did not know him.

  460. Even though the announcement

  461. was made,

  462. even though the wise men came,

  463. at the end of the day

  464. the coming of our Lord Jesus

  465. was something

  466. that was largely overlooked

  467. by almost everyone

  468. that heard the news.

  469. Without his background

  470. I want to dive into the text

  471. and think about it

  472. a little more carefully

  473. because the news

  474. that is given there

  475. is truly spectacular

  476. and has application

  477. to each of us

  478. here this morning.

  479. Go back, if you will,

  480. to Luke chapter 2

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  481. and pick up with me there

  482. what we read in verse 9.

  483. And the angel

  484. and an angel

  485. of the Lord

  486. appeared to them

  487. and the glory of the Lord

  488. shone around them

  489. and they were filled

  490. with fear.

  491. A little sidebar.

  492. And I don't know about you

  493. but I recognize

  494. certain patterns.

  495. I'm old enough

  496. to see it happen

  497. periodically.

  498. Every five to ten years

  499. someone decides

  500. that it's appropriate

  501. to write a book

  502. about having been in heaven

  503. or having seen God directly.

  504. And very popular

  505. and people make a lot

  506. of money doing it.

  507. 90 minutes in heaven

  508. da da da

  509. you know

  510. the little boy etc.

  511. By the way

  512. he recanted that

  513. in case you didn't know.

  514. But the idea

  515. is that you see God

  516. and you know

  517. kind of get all

  518. caught up in this

  519. and we don't find

  520. that illustration

  521. in scripture.

  522. Any individual

  523. who has come face to face

  524. with angelic announcement

  525. generally pretty terrified

  526. by it.

  527. And here are the angels

  528. the glory of the Lord

  529. shone around them

  530. and they were filled

  531. with fear.

  532. And the angel said

  533. to them

  534. fear not

  535. for behold

  536. I bring you

  537. good news

  538. of great joy

  539. that will be

  540. for all the people.

  541. I want you to listen

  542. to this encouragement

  543. that the angel brings

  544. to the shepherds

  545. there in the field.

  546. You can understand

  547. the terrifying

  548. experience that they have

  549. but listen to what

  550. he says.

  551. He says

  552. I bring you

  553. good news

  554. of great joy

  555. that will be

  556. for all the people.

  557. I want you to think

  558. about the exceptional news

  559. that good news.

  560. I'm not here to give you

  561. a great deal

  562. of Greek

  563. but the word

  564. that is used there

  565. is the word

  566. from which we get

  567. the word gospel.

  568. Euangelion

  569. Euangelion

  570. Euangelion

  571. Euangelion

  572. Euangelion

  573. and it was a word

  574. that was often used

  575. I shouldn't say often

  576. but it was generally

  577. used to give

  578. political

  579. and exceptional

  580. announcements

  581. unbelievably exceptional

  582. announcements.

  583. Case in point

  584. when the empire

  585. saving battle

  586. had been won

  587. by one of the

  588. Roman generals

  589. that was called

  590. good news.

  591. It had political

  592. ramifications

  593. and it was

  594. something that

  595. kind of

  596. changed the dynamics.

  597. You could imagine

  598. that if we

  599. heard

  600. on April

  601. 15th

  602. that all

  603. of our taxes

  604. had been

  605. forgiven

  606. for the year

  607. how many of you

  608. would say

  609. good news?

  610. Would you say that?

  611. Huh?

  612. I'm not just

  613. talking about

  614. your federal taxes

  615. I'm talking about

  616. your city taxes

  617. and blah blah blah

  618. all the way

  619. down

  620. it's like

  621. yes!

  622. Well

  623. the word

  624. was used

  625. to refer

  626. to exceptional

  627. moments

  628. in history

  629. when something

  630. of tremendous

  631. value

  632. and import

  633. had happened

  634. and so here's

  635. the angel

  636. says

  637. I have got

  638. good news

  639. for you.

  640. It's interesting

  641. actually

  642. that there was

  643. a stone carving

  644. found somewhere

  645. in Turkey

  646. in which

  647. the following

  648. was written

  649. about Caesar

  650. Augustus.

  651. Now who's

  652. Caesar Augustus?

  653. Hello?

  654. in the text

  655. here we go

  656. okay

  657. and so

  658. here's what we read

  659. since providence

  660. this is what was

  661. on the stone carving

  662. since providence

  663. which has ordered

  664. all things

  665. and is deeply

  666. interested in our life

  667. has set

  668. in most perfect

  669. order by giving

  670. us Augustus

  671. whom she filled

  672. with virtue

  673. that he might

  674. benefit mankind

  675. sending him

  676. as a savior

  677. both for us

  678. and for our

  679. descendants

  680. that he might

  681. end war

  682. isn't that a nice

  683. thought

  684. he might end

  685. war

  686. and arrange

  687. all things

  688. and since

  689. he

  690. Caesar

  691. by his

  692. appearance

  693. surpassing

  694. all previous

  695. benefactors

  696. and not even

  697. leaving to

  698. posterity

  699. any hope

  700. of surpassing

  701. what he's done

  702. now how is that

  703. for kind of

  704. waxing eloquent

  705. right

  706. and not even

  707. leaving to

  708. posterity

  709. there will

  710. there will

  711. never be

  712. someone

  713. even

  714. anywhere

  715. close

  716. to being

  717. as good

  718. as him

  719. right

  720. okay

  721. and since

  722. the birthday

  723. of the god

  724. Augustus

  725. was the beginning

  726. of the good

  727. tidings

  728. that's the word

  729. euangelio

  730. okay

  731. since

  732. the birthday

  733. of the god

  734. Augustus

  735. was the beginning

  736. of good

  737. tidings

  738. for the world

  739. that came

  740. by reason

  741. of him

  742. now who's

  743. this talking

  744. about

  745. a guy

  746. who's

  747. dust

  748. today

  749. who did

  750. very little

  751. to make

  752. any difference

  753. in anybody's

  754. life

  755. and here

  756. boy that's

  757. whoever the

  758. speech writer

  759. or poet

  760. was that did

  761. this did a good

  762. job

  763. you know it's

  764. like oh man

  765. exceptional news

  766. you read that

  767. and you think

  768. who are they

  769. talking about

  770. they're talking

  771. about a man

  772. the angel

  773. says

  774. I've got

  775. really good

  776. news

  777. good news

  778. now the second

  779. thing that the

  780. angel said

  781. he says

  782. first it's

  783. good news

  784. but he said

  785. and you mark

  786. what it says

  787. there

  788. it says

  789. that is of

  790. great joy

  791. great joy

  792. the word

  793. is talking

  794. about something

  795. that is

  796. very emotionally

  797. charged

  798. the idea

  799. is that

  800. the news

  801. was of

  802. such a nature

  803. that just

  804. hearing it

  805. brought on

  806. an emotional

  807. surge

  808. I saw

  809. a picture

  810. last week

  811. of a group

  812. of workers

  813. somewhere in

  814. North Carolina

  815. that over

  816. the years

  817. had pooled

  818. their money

  819. for lottery

  820. tickets

  821. don't

  822. don't do

  823. that

  824. okay

  825. but the

  826. the picture

  827. was of

  828. all these

  829. people hugging

  830. each other

  831. and just

  832. crying

  833. they were

  834. overwhelmed

  835. with the

  836. prospect

  837. I think

  838. they won

  839. 18 or

  840. whatever

  841. million dollars

  842. and here

  843. they were

  844. we're so

  845. happy

  846. you know

  847. and they

  848. were just

  849. beside

  850. themselves

  851. with the

  852. enthusiasm

  853. for the

  854. good news

  855. the emotion

  856. here's the

  857. angel

  858. the angel

  859. says

  860. I am

  861. bringing you

  862. good news

  863. that is

  864. of great

  865. joy

  866. let me ask

  867. you a

  868. question

  869. how many

  870. of you

  871. remember

  872. what you

  873. felt like

  874. after you

  875. prayed and

  876. asked Christ

  877. to be your

  878. savior and

  879. you sensed

  880. the freedom

  881. and the

  882. forgiveness

  883. of having

  884. all of your

  885. sins taken

  886. away

  887. do you

  888. remember

  889. that

  890. I was a

  891. little boy

  892. and I can

  893. still remember

  894. what it was

  895. to listen to

  896. my dad

  897. having devotions

  898. in our

  899. family over

  900. there in

  901. India

  902. and I

  903. had been

  904. in growing

  905. conviction

  906. for the

  907. blackness

  908. and darkness

  909. of my

  910. heart

  911. and I

  912. reached the

  913. point where

  914. I was

  915. absolutely

  916. despairing

  917. of my

  918. heart's

  919. condition

  920. and I

  921. remember

  922. breaking

  923. down and

  924. crying

  925. in devotions

  926. and my

  927. dad said

  928. what's

  929. wrong

  930. and I

  931. shared the

  932. burden of

  933. my soul

  934. and he

  935. asked my

  936. mom to

  937. take me

  938. into the

  939. room

  940. and she

  941. explained

  942. the gospel

  943. further to

  944. me

  945. and I

  946. can remember

  947. praying

  948. and asking

  949. Christ to

  950. save me

  951. and I

  952. can remember

  953. the incredible

  954. sense of

  955. having my

  956. sins forgiven

  957. that's

  958. great news

  959. and great

  960. news of

  961. unbelievable

  962. joy

  963. and so

  964. here's the

  965. angel who

  966. brings

  967. exceptional

  968. news

  969. the angel

  970. who brings

  971. this emotional

  972. news but also

  973. the angel that

  974. brings this

  975. news about the

  976. fact that this

  977. is valuable for

  978. the whole world

  979. listen to what it

  980. says in the

  981. passage it

  982. says here

  983. today is born

  984. I bring you

  985. good news of

  986. great joy that

  987. will be for

  988. all the

  989. people

  990. all the

  991. people

  992. not just for

  993. the people there

  994. in Bethlehem

  995. not just for the

  996. people there in

  997. Jerusalem

  998. not just for the

  999. people in the

  1000. nation of

  1001. Israel but

  1002. good news for

  1003. all of the

  1004. people all

  1005. across the

  1006. world

  1007. will you turn

  1008. with me just

  1009. for a moment

  1010. back to a

  1011. passage in

  1012. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  1013. 12

  1014. go back

  1015. there if you

  1016. will

  1017. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  1018. 12

  1019. take a look

  1020. at that

  1021. text

  1022. in Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  1023. chapter 12

  1024. we find

  1025. God giving

  1026. the Abrahamic

  1027. covenant to

  1028. Abraham and

  1029. listen to what

  1030. he has to

  1031. say

  1032. verse 3

  1033. I will bless

  1034. those who

  1035. bless you

  1036. and him who

  1037. dishonors you

  1038. I will curse

  1039. and in you

  1040. all the

  1041. families of

  1042. the earth

  1043. shall be

  1044. blessed

  1045. how is that

  1046. because through

  1047. Abraham's seed

  1048. would come

  1049. the savior

  1050. of the world

  1051. the one who

  1052. God would

  1053. send to be

  1054. our savior

  1055. and the one

  1056. who God

  1057. would send

  1058. to die for

  1059. us and to

  1060. pay the penalty

  1061. for our sins

  1062. that we might

  1063. have salvation

  1064. through his

  1065. finished work

  1066. and that was

  1067. the good news

  1068. that the angel

  1069. brought valuable

  1070. not only to

  1071. shepherds but

  1072. valuable to the

  1073. entire world

  1074. that's one of the

  1075. reasons why we

  1076. engage in

  1077. missions work

  1078. isn't that right

  1079. we want other

  1080. people to know

  1081. the good news

  1082. we want other

  1083. people to know

  1084. the blessing of

  1085. complete forgiveness

  1086. for all of their

  1087. sins and it is

  1088. woven in to our

  1089. daily life and to

  1090. our prayer and to

  1091. our interest

  1092. what is it that

  1093. I can do to

  1094. draw attention to

  1095. the need that

  1096. only Jesus can

  1097. answer and to

  1098. Jesus who is the

  1099. solution for the

  1100. deepest needs of

  1101. every man

  1102. well let's look at

  1103. the cause for the

  1104. great joy going

  1105. back there to

  1106. Luke chapter 2

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  1107. mark what it says

  1108. there for here's

  1109. the reason for

  1110. unto you is born

  1111. this day in the

  1112. city of David a

  1113. savior who is

  1114. Christ the Lord

  1115. as you think about

  1116. the cause for

  1117. great joy I want

  1118. you to recognize

  1119. first of all God

  1120. keeps his promises

  1121. God keeps his

  1122. promises when he

  1123. says for unto you

  1124. is born this day

  1125. in the city of

  1126. David a savior who

  1127. is Christ the Lord

  1128. God has kept his

  1129. promise I want you

  1130. to think with me

  1131. just for a moment

  1132. don't need to turn

1133. to it but go back

  1134. if you will in

  1135. your thinking back

  1136. to Genesis chapter

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1137. 3 after Adam and

  1138. Eve sinned God

  1139. comes on and

  1140. speaks with them

  1141. and what does he

  1142. promise the day

  1143. is coming when

  1144. the one who will

  1145. bruise Satan's

  1146. head will come

  1147. and that is the

  1148. first reference to

  1149. the fact that God

  1150. would provide a

  1151. savior who would

  1152. come through flesh

  1153. to be our

  1154. redeemer and so

  1155. here we have woven

  1156. into the very

  1157. beginning of the

  1158. gospel testimony

  1159. the Bible's record

1160. of the work of God

  1161. on behalf of

  1162. fallen mankind

  1163. we find God

  1164. says I will send

  1165. a savior who

  1166. will come by

  1167. birth and he is

  1168. going to be a

  1169. blessing and the

  1170. one who redeems

  1171. you woven

  1172. throughout the

  1173. Old Testament

  1174. record over and

  1175. over again there

  1176. are little illusions

  1177. little statements

  1178. made about the fact

  1179. that the day is

  1180. coming when God

  1181. would send the

  1182. Messiah and he

1183. would be born of a

  1184. virgin Mary over

  1185. there in Isaiah

  1186. and the picture

  1187. plays out for us

  1188. such that when

  1189. Herod asked so

  1190. where is he going

  1191. to be born they

  1192. could identify his

  1193. fact the fact that

1194. he was going to be

1195. born in the city of

  1196. Bethlehem and

  1197. recognize this is

  1198. according to

  1199. prophecy so I want

  1200. you to recognize

1201. that if God can be

  1202. trusted to keep his

  1203. promise in the past

  1204. will he keep his

  1205. promise in the future

  1206. what's the answer

1207. how many of you are

  1208. trusting his promises

  1209. today or are

  1210. profoundly anxious

  1211. living a life that

  1212. is not resting upon

  1213. the certainty of what

1214. he has done and what

1215. he has promised to do

1216. God calls us as his

  1217. people in particular to

1218. be people who live in

  1219. the light of his

  1220. promises who live in

  1221. the light of the

  1222. certainty of his

1223. return I want you to

  1224. recognize something else

  1225. we find that God

  1226. provided a savior in

  1227. the passage it says

1228. unto you is born this

1229. day in the city of

1230. David a savior who is

  1231. Christ the Lord

  1232. last week had the

  1233. opportunity to talk

  1234. with several individuals

  1235. just the course of

  1236. having lunch with them

  1237. and not not individuals

  1238. who part of our

  1239. fellowship and in the

  1240. course of conversation

  1241. we pretty much finished

1242. up the meal and I say

1243. let me ask you a

  1244. question they had

1245. shared that they go to

  1246. church every Sunday

  1247. morning every Sunday

1248. morning I said so let

1249. me ask you a question

1250. if you were to die

1251. how many of you know

  1252. this question is coming

1253. right if you were to

  1254. die tonight and God

1255. were to ask you why he

  1256. should let you into

  1257. heaven what would you

  1258. say now we're talking

  1259. about people who had

  1260. already confessed we go

  1261. to church every Sunday

  1262. morning never miss I

1263. said so God asked you

1264. why he should let you

1265. in what would you say

  1266. there are actually four

  1267. sitting there and one

1268. who had already told me

  1269. they didn't go to

1270. church at all he young

1271. guy he said to the two

1272. older guys he said that's

  1273. a good question yeah I

1274. said so what would you

  1275. say one guy says I I

  1276. don't know I don't know

  1277. what I would say I'm

1278. trying my best how many

  1279. of you really think

  1280. you're trying your best

1281. look up at me and say

  1282. I'm trying my best

  1283. don't raise your hand

1284. okay you're not in that

1285. crowd the other guy says

  1286. I I don't know what to

1287. say so they had just

1288. also told me about their

  1289. their families and their

1290. wife and I said so your

1291. wife and you get married

1292. in the church and as

  1293. you're walking down after

  1294. the ceremony your wife

1295. says to you are we

1296. married and you say I

  1297. don't know I don't know

1298. I said I got to tell you

  1299. something about the God

1300. that I know he is very

1301. clear about the things I

1302. need to know and the

  1303. scriptures make it

  1304. undeniably clear that I

  1305. can't save myself and

1306. that God sent his son to

1307. be my savior so when we

  1308. think about that little

1309. word savior I want you

  1310. to recognize several

1311. truths about that for one

1312. it tells us that we have a

  1313. need for help from

  1314. outside ourselves do you

1315. follow that why do I need

  1316. a savior because I can't do

  1317. it myself

1318. the second fact that I want

1319. you to focus on here is

1320. that the reality of the

1321. truth is that there is a

1322. cancer on the soul of every

1323. living person that makes it

1324. impossible for them to save

  1325. themselves

1326. sin has so corrupted our mind

1327. and our logic that even in the

1328. best of our deeds there is a

  1329. tincture that is deeply

1330. offensive to God and there is

1331. no work of righteousness that

1332. any man may do that will ever

1333. endure him to God you cannot

1334. save yourself and the thing

1335. that I want you to recognize

1336. here is that this fact of

1337. salvation that God makes very

1338. clear in this passage is a

  1339. salvation that is certain

1340. because of who has done the

1341. work listen to the verse

1342. again it says for unto you is

1343. born this day in the city of

1344. David a savior who is Christ

1345. the Lord I love the fact that

1346. woven into the beauty of the

  1347. gospel is the absolute

  1348. certainty of the eternal

1349. destiny of the one who believes

1350. in Lord Jesus why not because

1351. man saves himself but but

1352. salvation is the work of God

1353. and here is the angel declaring

1354. to those poor shepherds I want

1355. to tell you something that God

1356. has sent his son to be the

1357. savior of the world one other

1358. thing that I want you to mark

1359. here in this passage is that God

1360. has taken on human flesh verse

1361. 12 and this will be a sign for

1362. you you will find a baby wrapped

1363. in swaddling clothes and lying in a

1364. manger you know I think I think

1365. something this fantastic tends to

1366. stretch our mind to the point that

1367. we just kind of zone out and

1368. don't really think about it very

1369. often God the infinite holy creator

1370. of this universe chose to take upon

1371. himself human flesh and to be among

1372. us to live to suffer to die and if

1373. the reality of Christ becoming flesh in

1374. the incarnation is not one that kind

1375. of first of all just kind of overwhelms

1376. you and then secondly just fills you

1377. with thanksgiving my appeal to you

1378. would be this that you need to think

1379. more carefully about that fact God in

1380. his love for us and in his sensitivity

1381. to our frailty was willing to send his

1382. son to come here and live on this earth

1383. and to die and to rise again and for

1384. all eternity to abide and dwell in

1385. flesh with us so as we look at this

1386. passage in closing I want you to

1387. recognize that this tells us a

1388. historical fact of about 2,000 some

1389. years ago right it's a fact God sent

1390. his son the Lord Jesus Christ in keeping

1391. with promises he had made centuries

1392. millenniums in the past and we who sit

1393. here today who know the Lord Jesus

1394. Christ have the blessing of being able

1395. to celebrate look forward to his birth and

1396. and just celebrate that fact with with

1397. confidence and joy in the fact that we

1398. who know Christ have had all our sins

1399. forgiven and we are looking forward to

1400. eternity when we are going to see him

  1401. face to face

1402. I have no doubt there are some of you

1403. here today that don't know Christ you

1404. may have grown up in a church you may

1405. have been like me and had a good

1406. devotional life your parents read the

1407. Bible to you you heard the Sunday

1408. school stories but the fact the matter

1409. is is you've never come to grips with

1410. the sin in your heart and you've never

1411. asked Christ to be your Savior I would

1412. be remiss if this morning in the face of

1413. the sweetness of the gospel I did not

1414. plead with you to confess your sins and

1415. believe on the Lord Jesus Christ in whom

1416. alone is salvation you see the reason

1417. Jesus came is because we can't save

1418. ourselves and all you have in front of

1419. you is the undeniable record of your

1420. inability to do that which is of

1421. eternal significance you can't change

1422. who you are but God sent his son the

1423. Lord Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for

1424. your sins and to grant you salvation

1425. through faith in him and I would plead

1426. with you you do that now let's bow our

1427. heads and pray our precious father we

1428. are thankful this morning for the

1429. sweetness of the gospel that makes it

1430. clear to us that you sent the Lord

1431. Jesus Christ to be our Savior he came

1432. here to this earth he lived among us he

1433. died for our sins and rose again that

1434. all who believe in him might have

1435. everlasting life and I would plead with

1436. you this morning that those of us who are

1437. here today that know Christ would have

1438. our hearts lifted up and encouraged to

1439. recognize you have done a great thing for

1440. us that we could not do that our thank you

1441. to you is live a life that is marked by

1442. holiness in my humility by a genuine

1443. affection and interest in the well-being of

1444. those who don't know the Lord Jesus Christ

1445. and those who are part of the family of

1446. God I pray for those that are here today

1447. that do not know you some who have grown

1448. up in homes where they've heard the

1449. Bible they've heard the scriptures they

1450. have had Sunday school in Awana and the

1451. fact of the matter is is their hearts are

1452. stone cold to you this morning because

1453. they've never come to faith I would plead

1454. with you that you and your mercy would

1455. draw them to the cross that they would

1456. confess their sins and believe on Christ

1457. that they would humble themselves and cry

1458. out for salvation today I ask this in

  1459. Jesus name amen
