  1. Oh, if you are one of the kiddos that's supposed to go to the back, now's the time to do it.

  2. Okay?

  3. Takes me just a second to get, man, listen to you.

  4. I love that.

  5. I was in Psalms this morning in devotions.

  6. Psalm 27.

  7. I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy.

  8. I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

  9. I like singing about our Savior, don't you?

  10. Well, I suppose you tire a little bit of hearing me talk about how long I've been at this, but bear with me.

  11. One of the things that comes with preaching around holidays and times where I think it's appropriate to focus your thoughts scripturally in particular

  12. around things that relate to what's going on around you.

  13. It so happens that when you come to Christmas year after year after year, it's not like you can choose a new passage.

  14. There aren't that many.

  15. And the tendency is, is we are very inclined to kind of lock in on the idea, I've heard that before, and kind of tune out.

  16. And I would appeal to you that that is not why God has you here this morning.

  17. I do want you to look at a passage that you may not normally connect with Christmas.

  18. Turn in your Bibles to Mark chapter 10, and we're going to pick up in verse 35.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  19. Mark chapter 10, verse 35.

    Mark 10:35

  20. And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said to him,

  21. Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.

  22. And he said to them, What do you want me to do for you?

  23. By the way, just stop for a second.

  24. Do you think Jesus didn't know what they were going to ask?

  25. No.

  26. But sometimes it's appropriate to go ahead and let a person fully reveal what's inside.

  27. How many of you have learned that the hard way, right?

  28. Sometimes you think you know what somebody else is going to say.

  29. Jesus did know.

  30. But giving them an opportunity to talk about it brings it right out in front.

  31. And so Jesus asked them, Say, Hey, what would you like me to do?

  32. And verse 37, they said to him, Grant us to sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your glory.

  33. How noble.

  34. How thoughtful.

  35. How like an apostle, right?

  36. I mean, hey, you know, we're willing to wait.

  37. But eventually, we would like brothers, one on your right, one on your left.

  38. Jesus said to them, You do not know what you're asking.

  39. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink?

  40. Or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?

  41. They said to him, We are able.

  42. And Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink.

  43. And with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized.

  44. But to sit on my right hand or on my left is not mine to grant,

  45. but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.

  46. And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John.

  47. Don't you like righteous indignation?

  48. How many of you have ever had righteous indignation at other people's frailties and failures?

  49. You ever been there?

  50. It's like, I can't believe it.

  51. You know, it's like, not me.

  52. Yeah.

  53. Well, here they are.

  54. They're indignant.

  55. And Jesus called them to him and said to them,

  56. You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,

  57. and their great ones exercise authority over them.

  58. It shall not be so among you,

  59. but whoever would be great among you must be your servant.

  60. And whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.

  61. For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve,

  62. and to give his life a ransom for many.

  63. It's very easy for us to get caught up in a very natural mindset of what's in it for me.

  64. Christmas is a time that I found myself asking some of our younger children this morning,

  65. So what are you getting for Christmas?

  66. And I was surprised at how often kids actually know.

  67. I mean, you know, after all, they make a wish list, right?

  68. And they let their parents know.

  69. But I know some children, some devious little ones,

  70. that go around shaking packages.

  71. How many of you have had your children shake packages?

  72. I see the look, you know.

  73. How many of you go ahead and pay attention to not only what you're getting,

  74. but what you think your brothers and sisters are getting,

  75. kind of put it all together to kind of be sure there's equity,

  76. propriety.

  77. Everything's done, you know.

  78. It's like, hey, what's in it for me?

  79. What's in it for me?

  80. That is a natural and normal pattern of thinking.

  81. Wouldn't you agree with that?

  82. And we do pretty good at thinking about what's in it for me.

  83. There are all kinds of little things I hear people say that indicate that that's where their thinking is.

  84. One of the best ones I really like is,

  85. I didn't sign up for that.

  86. How many of you ever heard that phrase?

  87. I didn't sign up for that.

  88. Really?

  89. By the way, who signed you up?

  90. If you're thinking you signed up for it,

  91. you may not understand that there is a father in heaven that is in control of some of the fine print on your contract.

  92. And I want us to think this morning in a completely different way.

  93. And to recognize that when we come to the matter of Christmas,

  94. it's important for us not to get caught up in the world's thinking.

  95. So let's ask ourselves the question, what is Christmas really all about?

  96. What is Christmas about?

  97. If you were to ask retailers, they would tell you what?

  98. Christmas is all about them having the best possible opportunity of making money

  99. because between Thanksgiving and Christmas, guess what?

  100. You hope that people blow the wad and buy everything that you have managed to think was important to them

  101. and that you end up being fat and happy and everything works well.

  102. Workers tend to look at Christmas and think,

  103. huh, it's a holiday.

  104. It's a time to rest.

  105. I remember talking with someone out in Colorado,

  106. a man that's moved from here to there,

  107. and he was talking about the fact that from something like the,

  108. yeah, this Sunday on to the end of the year,

  109. they have no work.

  110. They're on vacation for the next basically two weeks.

  111. That's pretty nice, right?

  112. So Christmas is about relaxing.

  113. Kids, you know what they think Christmas is about?

  114. How many of you remember being kids?

  115. Some of you are older here, but I remember that Christmas is where I finally got to get what I thought I was getting.

  116. And with ambition and anticipation, you know, Christmas Eve, I was thinking tomorrow I'm going to get what, you know,

  117. and it was all about.

  118. And my parents, that was the one day in the year that my father as a surgeon did not get up early.

  119. I don't know how it worked out, but he actually slept in, you know, 7, 730.

  120. And it was probably the only day in the year that I wanted to get up early.

  121. And so there was kind of that fine balancing act between making enough noise so they knew we were up

  122. and not making too much noise that you'd really get in trouble for being obvious.

  123. How many of you understand that kind of gentle midpoint?

  124. Well, when we think about the matter of Christmas,

  125. we have to recognize that Christmas really isn't something that is focused on us and our thoughts,

  126. but it is focused on the purposes that God has in our salvation.

  127. And if there's any passage that puts this clearly in front of us,

  128. it would be one such as this that make it very, very clear that Jesus came to save us,

  129. and more specifically, he came to die for our sins.

  130. And I think that's important for us to get our head around and recognize that the fact of the matter is this,

  131. is that Christ's coming was principally to address the issue of sin in our life

  132. and to care for it in perspective of the matter of salvation.

  133. And so when we think about Christmas and we think about his birth,

  134. it's important for us to step beyond the matter of presents that we're getting

  135. and think about what is the value of what Christmas means in the larger scope of our own eternal destiny.

  136. See, Christmas is about God sending his son to live a perfect life and die on the cross to pay the penalty for us.

  137. I appreciate that song that John picked out and we sang just before,

  138. reminding us of the purpose of Christ's coming.

  139. You see, this theme of Christ being our Redeemer and the one who made atonement for our sins

  140. runs right through Scripture, kind of a central thread and one that we shouldn't lose sight of.

  141. Beginning all the way back in the book of Genesis, and I want you to turn,

  142. we're going to kind of spot ourselves in a couple different passages

  143. just to firm up our thinking about the matter of the centrality of Christ's sacrifice for our sins

  144. running from beginning to end.

  145. In Genesis chapter 3, let me read the passage to you just for a moment.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  146. Genesis chapter 3, verse 15, here is God speaking after Adam and Eve had sinned

    Genesis 3:15

  147. and God comes to address the issue.

  148. Look at what he says in verse 15.

  149. I will put enmity between you and the woman, talking to the serpent,

  150. and between your offspring and her offspring.

  151. He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel.

  152. There is what is called by some theologians there the proto-evangelum.

  153. In other words, it's the first indication of the gospel that we find in the Scripture.

  154. Here is God speaking to man who, after he had sinned, is told,

  155. I have a plan and it will be my son that will die for your sins,

  156. and he, by his death, is going to break the bondage and the power of sin over your life.

  157. It's interesting when you stop and really think about it.

  158. Here is God who earlier had said to man,

  159. the soul that sins, it will what?

  160. It will die.

  161. God had made it clear that there is a penalty for sin.

  162. And yet Adam and Eve, unwilling to listen and believe,

  163. had gone ahead and committed the sin.

  164. And God says, I have a remedy,

  165. and it will be through someone who is born who is going to address the problem.

  166. We find this theme of God's provision flowing throughout the Scriptures.

  167. Let me have you look at another passage as well.

  168. Over in Isaiah chapter 53,

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  169. Isaiah chapter 53, as Isaiah is writing about the coming of our Lord Jesus,

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  170. he makes it very, very clear that his coming is in relationship to sacrifice and to our sin.

  171. Let me read just for a portion here in Isaiah chapter 53, verse 4.

    Isaiah 53:4

  172. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.

  173. Yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted.

  174. But he was wounded for what?

  175. What was he wounded for?

  176. Our transgressions.

  177. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  178. Let me stop just for a moment.

  179. How many of you recognize that sin is something that, truthfully,

  180. we are far more comfortable with than we should be?

  181. Do you recognize that?

  182. Let me stop and have you think just a little bit further in that.

  183. There may be some of you here that in the last week have said some things you really wish you hadn't said.

  184. Anybody out there that can identify with that?

  185. I'm waiting.

  186. Oh, good, good, good.

  187. How many of you have not only said some things that you were really sorry you said,

  188. but also have done some things that you really wish you could take back?

  189. Let me kind of work your way through this so you can understand.

  190. The things we act on generally have more traction than the things we say.

  191. Agreed?

  192. The things we think are at the far end of the food chain,

  193. and we're really not all that bothered by the things that we think often that are absolutely ungodly.

  194. Would you agree with that?

  195. But the truth of the matter is is that all sin is equally offensive to God.

  196. And we need to recognize that the fact that he was willing, coming back here to verse 5,

  197. he was wounded for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities,

  198. we tend to think, well, what was so bad that he had to suffer like this for our sin?

  199. It is because all sin is equally and supremely offensive to a holy God,

  200. and when we engage in sin, it has to be remedied.

  201. And so as you work your way through this passage,

  202. one of the things that you see very, very clearly

  203. is that God was willing to send his son, the Lord Jesus,

  204. to make atonement for our sin, to pay the penalty for it.

  205. All we like sheep have gone astray, we've turned everyone to his own way,

  206. and the Lord has laid on him, what?

  207. The iniquity of us all.

  208. The Lord put, the Father put on Jesus the weight and the penalty,

  209. the consequences, the wrath of God against sin,

  210. he put it on Jesus instead of on us.

  211. It's not just in the passage in Isaiah that we see the truth

  212. of Jesus being our sacrifice.

  213. We find over and over again as you work your way through,

  214. it appears over and over.

  215. In Matthew 1, verse 21,

    Matthew 1:21

  216. when the birth of Jesus is announced,

  217. it says,

  218. for he shall save his people from their sin.

  219. In John 1, verse 29,

    John 1:29

  220. when John the Baptist saw Jesus coming,

  221. he said,

  222. behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  223. He was looking at the Lord Jesus,

  224. and he made the announcement,

  225. there is the one who is going to satisfy

  226. and deal with the sin problem that we have.

  227. It's amazing when you ask people

  228. what is the biggest problem that they have,

  229. the kind of answers that you get.

  230. If you're in a hospital,

  231. a person thinks to themselves,

  232. well, man, I'm having health problems.

  233. I'd really like something done about that.

  234. If the person is in financial difficulty,

  235. guess what?

  236. I really need more money.

  237. If the person is two days away

  238. from the absolute most important exam of their life,

  239. guess what they're thinking about?

  240. Oh, man, I really need help passing this exam.

  241. The truth of the matter is,

  242. none of those things are worthy of being compared

  243. to the matter of our sin.

  244. And the matter is,

  245. is that God sent the Lord Jesus to be the sacrifice

  246. and the satisfaction for our debt and our sin.

  247. I want you also to think with me

  248. of what Jesus is saying here in Mark,

  249. and let's go back to that passage just for a moment.

  250. Mark chapter 10, verse 45,

    Mark 10:45

  251. for even the Son of Man,

  252. he's talking to his disciples,

  253. and the disciples' interest is,

  254. so what am I getting out of this?

  255. What am I going to receive?

  256. And let me tell you something.

  257. When people go into marriage

  258. with the attitude of,

  259. hey, what am I getting out of it,

  260. guess what they're going to discover?

  261. They're going to discover

  262. that their dissatisfaction

  263. and their misappropriated interest

  264. is going to cause them heartache

  265. that will only grow

  266. until they come to grips

  267. with the selfishness

  268. and the darkness of their own heart.

  269. What happens when we go into ministry

  270. or into church

  271. or into any kind of relationship

  272. where the only focus we have

  273. is on what am I going to get out of it?

  274. It's going to be heartache.

  275. And here is Jesus, on the other hand,

  276. saying, let me tell you something.

  277. Instead of having that mindset,

  278. I want you to think about

  279. the attitude and heart that I have,

  280. and here it is.

  281. For even the Son of Man,

  282. sinless, perfect, holy, wonderful,

  283. even the Son of Man

  284. came not to be served,

  285. but to serve and to give His life

  286. a ransom for many.

  287. And so as you think about

  288. what this passage tells us,

  289. it makes it very, very clear

  290. that the Lord Jesus Christ,

  291. in His coming,

  292. came principally to do this,

  293. to satisfy the debt

  294. of our sin

  295. and to have it wiped away.

  296. I wonder this morning

  297. whether or not

  298. that really strikes you,

  299. whether it really makes

  300. a difference in your thinking,

  301. whether you stop this morning

  302. and think,

  303. man, I am so very thankful

  304. that the focal point of Christmas

  305. is not the gifts that I get,

  306. but the fact that Jesus came

  307. to be my Savior

  308. and to die for my sins.

  309. Well, let's come to another

  310. practical question

  311. as we think about

  312. the matter of this verse.

  313. And I want you to think with me

  314. about why the atonement

  315. is so important.

  316. Why is the atonement

  317. so important?

  318. One of the things

  319. that is sadly missed

  320. in our contemporary culture

  321. is the fact that

  322. right and wrong

  323. is largely missing.

  324. I remember thinking to myself,

  325. well, now that the election

  326. is passed,

  327. all the political wrangling

  328. and jangling

  329. is going to kind of

  330. diminish a little bit.

  331. How many of you

  332. have been stunned

  333. to realize that's not the case?

  334. I mean, every time

  335. you turn on the news,

  336. they're just flapping their gums

  337. about one thing or another

  338. in relationship to politics.

  339. And it just reminds me,

  340. politics is really

  341. just a conflict of worldviews.

  342. And here we have people

  343. that are all wrapped up

  344. in believing that

  345. one side or another

  346. is really the key

  347. to the whole thing.

  348. And in the middle of all that

  349. is the reality that

  350. the majority of people

  351. involved in what we see

  352. going on today

  353. really have no moral compass.

  354. I was intrigued to realize

  355. that Facebook

  356. is going to work

  357. to prevent,

  358. what is it called,

  359. fake news?

  360. How many of you figured out

  361. that it's all fake news

  362. more or less?

  363. You know,

  364. I'll never forget

  365. when Paul David Tripp

  366. said this,

  367. everybody has an agenda.

  368. Everybody has an agenda.

  369. And as you listen

  370. to people today,

  371. you recognize

  372. that their agenda

  373. is self-serving.

  374. And so here we live

  375. in a world

  376. where the issues

  377. of right and wrong

  378. are largely kind of

  379. pushed over to the side

  380. and the question is,

  381. does it work

  382. and does it accomplish

  383. my end and my objectives?

  384. It's amazing

  385. when you stop and think

  386. that rational,

  387. intelligent individuals

  388. who would never

  389. for a moment

  390. deny the laws of gravity,

  391. who would admit

  392. that thermodynamics

  393. and all the laws

  394. related to that

  395. are absolutely essential

  396. and cannot be violated.

  397. At the same time,

  398. think that the same God

  399. who put those laws

  400. into place

  401. and also made moral laws

  402. that you can get away

  403. with violating moral laws

  404. while you can't get away

  405. with violating laws

  406. such as the law of gravity.

  407. You know,

  408. if I were to step off

  409. this platform,

  410. how many of you recognize

  411. what the immediate

  412. consequence would be?

  413. If I stepped off,

  414. what happens?

  415. I go down.

  416. By the same token,

  417. the God of this universe

  418. also made a law

  419. in which He says this,

  420. the soul that sins,

  421. it shall,

  422. there is a consequence

  423. for sin.

  424. And that consequence

  425. cannot be overlooked.

  426. There's no way around it.

  427. By the way,

  428. we tend to wish

  429. God dealt with other people's sins

  430. fairly rapidly.

  431. Do you realize that?

  432. We tend to believe

  433. God doesn't deal with ours

  434. the same way.

  435. And why I say that is this,

  436. is that I'm amazed,

  437. I'm amazed

  438. to be around individuals

  439. on occasion

  440. who are fully persuaded

  441. that their sins

  442. will not have

  443. eventual consequence.

  444. But they do.

  445. God is not mocked.

  446. What a man sows,

  447. that a man will,

  448. he'll reap.

  449. And so I want you

  450. to recognize this morning

  451. when you think about

  452. why Jesus came,

  453. He actually came

  454. to make atonement for us.

  455. And why is that?

  456. Because the truth,

  457. the righteousness,

  458. and the justice of God

  459. must be satisfied.

  460. God can no more

  461. overlook sin

  462. than we can overlook breathing.

  463. His nature requires

  464. that sin be dealt with

  465. and He can't violate

  466. that nature.

  467. When there is sin,

  468. it must be atoned for

  469. or it must be punished.

  470. He cannot overlook

  471. the rebellion

  472. and the harm that sin does.

  473. And though He is

  474. long-suffering and patient,

  475. we know for one,

  476. or for several reasons,

  477. His long-suffering patience,

  478. for one,

  479. is designed to lead people

  480. to repentance,

  481. gives them time

  482. to repent.

  483. But let me tell you

  484. another thing.

  485. God's long-suffering patience

  486. also allows individuals

  487. to be fully hardened

  488. in their sins

  489. so that when He does judge,

  490. they can't say,

  491. I didn't mean it

  492. and I was just careless

  493. and not thinking carefully

  494. about the outcome.

  495. When we sin,

  496. we do so intentionally

  497. and we do so with intent

  498. that has been developed

  499. in our heart.

  500. And so I want you

  501. to recognize this morning

  502. that God's nature

  503. is such that

  504. when sin takes place,

  505. there's consequences for it.

  506. And the significance

  507. of His judgment against sin

  508. is proportionate

  509. to His glory

  510. and His significance,

  511. not to ours.

  512. Let me give you

  513. an explanation,

  514. maybe identify with.

  515. I remember when I was growing up,

  516. my parents took us through,

  517. we were traveling back from India

  518. and we came through Rome

  519. and we went to St. Peter's.

  520. Great place.

  521. Phenomenal.

  522. And I remember at St. Peter's

  523. actually having the privilege

  524. of going on a,

  525. I'd never seen one of these things

  526. in India,

  527. but you stood on the thing

  528. and it just kind of,

  529. what's it called?

  530. Not an escalator.

  531. A moving walkway, yeah.

  532. In order to walk past

  533. the Madonna and Child,

  534. this carving by Michelangelo,

  535. they put you on a moving walkway.

  536. Do you know why that was?

  537. So that everybody

  538. had an equal chance for him.

  539. There it was.

  540. You know,

  541. you kind of went by.

  542. And just imagine that,

  543. you know,

  544. there I was

  545. and I decided,

  546. you know what,

  547. I want to do something spectacular.

  548. So I took out a little hammer

  549. and dinged that thing.

  550. That would be a pretty

  551. offensive act,

  552. wouldn't it?

  553. Direct,

  554. if I smashed a clay cup,

  555. no big deal,

  556. but putting a ding

  557. in the Madonna and Child

  558. because of the significance

  559. of that statue

  560. would be something

  561. that would be offensive.

  562. When we sin against God,

  563. we violate His holiness

  564. and our sin

  565. is amplified

  566. and magnified

  567. by the significance

  568. of the one we sin against.

  569. And so what's the penalty

  570. for that?

  571. The Bible makes it clear.

  572. The soul that sins,

  573. it shall die.

  574. And God's goodness

  575. and His wisdom,

  576. God's holiness

  577. is of such infinite value

  578. that there is no remedy

  579. for that sin

  580. apart from death.

  581. And what happens in death

  582. is that after death

  583. there is judgment

  584. that lasts forever.

  585. And so when you think about that,

  586. I want you to understand

  587. that when Jesus died

  588. on the cross,

  589. He died to make atonement

  590. or substitute

  591. to satisfy God's judgment

  592. against us.

  593. Let me bring several verses

  594. to your attention this morning

  595. to have you think about.

  596. Turn in your Bibles

  597. from Mark

  598. over to Hebrews chapter 9.

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  599. Hebrews chapter 9.

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  600. Looking at verse 26

  601. and then 28.

  602. Let me explain it this way.

  603. The infinite penalty

  604. for a sin

  605. against an infinite God

  606. requires an infinite remedy.

  607. Do you got that?

  608. The infinite sin

  609. against an infinite God

  610. requires an infinite remedy

  611. and that is the Lord Jesus Christ.

  612. Look at verse 28.

  613. So Christ,

  614. having been offered once

  615. to bear the sins of many,

  616. will appear a second time

  617. not to deal with sin

  618. but to save those

  619. who are eagerly waiting for Him.

  620. Interesting,

  621. earlier in the week

  622. I had an opportunity

  623. to talk with an individual

  624. and ask them the question,

  625. so what's going to happen

  626. when you die?

  627. I don't know.

  628. I said,

  629. do you have any idea

  630. where you're going to go?

  631. Well,

  632. I suppose I'm going to heaven.

  633. Oh,

  634. okay.

  635. Why?

  636. Because I'm a pretty good person.

  637. I like being around

  638. pretty good people.

  639. So I said,

  640. how good are you?

  641. And,

  642. well,

  643. that's when things

  644. began to break down

  645. a little bit.

  646. You know,

  647. it's like,

  648. how good are you?

  649. Well,

  650. I really am pretty.

  651. At least I'm better

  652. than my neighbor.

  653. You know,

  654. and here's the fact

  655. of the matter.

  656. Sin is supremely offensive

  657. to God

  658. and He is not going

  659. to overlook

  660. a single piece of it.

  661. And so when you stop

  662. and recognize

  663. that what the Scripture says,

  664. Jesus had to die

  665. for our sins

  666. to satisfy the debt.

  667. And so here we are

  668. looking at that passage

  669. and reminding ourselves

  670. of the fact

  671. that Jesus died

  672. for our sins.

  673. Don't ever buy

  674. into the idea

  675. that you may satisfy

  676. the debt of your sin

  677. by your own behavior

  678. and your own efforts.

  679. Why is that?

  680. Because even

  681. in our own best efforts,

  682. we are really looking

  683. to do what?

  684. You know?

  685. To serve ourselves,

  686. bring glory to ourself,

  687. and we're self-focused.

  688. Only Christ

  689. can satisfy

  690. the debt

  691. of our sin.

  692. Let me have you look

  693. at one other passage

  694. in relationship to this

  695. over in 1 Peter 1.

  696. 1 Peter 1,

    1 Peter 1:18

  697. verse 18 and 19.

  698. Again,

  699. reminding us

  700. of Christ's coming

  701. and purpose.

  702. 1 Peter 1,

    1 Peter 1:18

  703. verse 18.

  704. Knowing that you were

  705. ransomed

  706. from the feudal ways

  707. inherited from your forefathers,

  708. not with perishable things

  709. such as silver or gold,

  710. can you imagine that?

  711. Going to a religious leader

  712. and saying,

  713. okay, I've sinned.

  714. What do I need to do?

  715. Well, you need to burn

  716. X number of candles,

  717. and you need to give

  718. X number of dollars,

  719. and you need to do

  720. such and such,

  721. and that will accommodate

  722. your sin.

  723. No, no, no.

  724. You were ransomed

  725. from the feudal ways

  726. inherited from your forefathers,

  727. not with perishable things,

  728. but with the precious blood

  729. of Christ

  730. like that of a lamb

  731. without blemish or spot.

  732. I want you to understand

  733. this morning

  734. as we think about

  735. why Jesus came,

  736. recognize this.

  737. Jesus came to take

  738. the full weight

  739. of my sin

  740. and your sin

  741. and to die

  742. in my place.

  743. What He did

  744. was He atoned

  745. for our sin

  746. by stepping in

  747. and taking our place

  748. and satisfying

  749. the penalty

  750. for our sins.

  751. So how does that

  752. fit my life?

  753. How does that

  754. fit your life?

  755. Every person

  756. that is here this morning

  757. is in one of two conditions.

  758. Only one of two conditions.

  759. You are either here

  760. as a person

  761. who has come

  762. to realize

  763. by the grace of God

  764. that you stand

  765. condemned

  766. before a holy God

  767. and that Christ Jesus

  768. came to pay

  769. the penalty

  770. for your sins

  771. and realizing

  772. that you're a sinner

  773. you've cried out

  774. and said

  775. I confess

  776. that I'm a sinner

  777. and I deserve judgment

  778. but God sent His Son

  779. to be my sacrifice

  780. and substitute

  781. and I believe

  782. in what He has done

  783. for me.

  784. Or you are here

  785. this morning

  786. thinking about Christmas

  787. and thinking

  788. about yourself

  789. and failing

  790. to recognize

  791. that the day

  792. is coming

  793. where you will

  794. give an account

  795. for your sin

  796. to God

  797. and you

  798. having overlooked

  799. what God

  800. has done for you

  801. will endure

  802. eternal judgment

  803. because you've denied

  804. God's plan

  805. and His purpose

  806. in sending Christ

  807. to be the Savior

  808. of the world.

  809. Periodically

  810. when I ask individuals

  811. the question

  812. so why should God

  813. let you into heaven

  814. and they tell me

  815. well I'm working hard

  816. at making my way

  817. my answer

  818. or a question

  819. that follows up at

  820. and particularly

  821. around this season

  822. is hey

  823. so why would God

  824. send His Son

  825. to die on the cross

  826. if you could get to heaven

  827. by your good works?

  828. Do you follow that?

  829. No.

  830. The reason God

  831. sent His Son

  832. is because we cannot

  833. save ourselves

  834. by our own good effort

  835. and here's the fact

  836. God having sent

  837. His Son

  838. and we turning around

  839. and saying

  840. I don't need His help

  841. and I don't need

  842. His sacrifice

  843. and I don't need Him

  844. as my Savior

  845. is a supremely

  846. offensive thing to God

  847. and I would appeal

  848. to you this morning

  849. if you are here today

  850. and you do not know Christ

  851. don't walk out of here

  852. this morning saying

  853. I really don't care

  854. about this matter of sin

  855. because the day of judgment

  856. is coming

  857. and I would appeal to you

  858. that you don't walk

  859. out of here saying

  860. listen

  861. I really don't care

  862. why Jesus came

  863. He came to be your Savior

  864. and the day is coming

  865. when you will stand

  866. before Him

  867. and give an account

  868. and I would plead with you

  869. today is the day

  870. of salvation

  871. now is the hour

  872. to repent and confess

  873. and believe on Jesus

  874. let's close in prayer

  875. our Father God

  876. this morning

  877. as we

  878. remind ourselves

  879. of why Jesus really came

  880. we're so very thankful

  881. that He came

  882. to be our sacrifice

  883. to make atonement

  884. for our sins

  885. and this morning

  886. as we

  887. bring this service

  888. to a close

  889. we remind ourselves

  890. that Christmas

  891. is about more

  892. than gifts

  893. that we receive

  894. it's about the gift

  895. that you gave us

  896. of salvation

  897. through the Lord

  898. Jesus Christ

  899. and I pray Lord

  900. for those that are here today

  901. that know Jesus

  902. as their Savior

  903. that their life

  904. reflects their thankfulness

  905. for their salvation

  906. I pray also

  907. for those that are here today

  908. that do not know

  909. the Lord Jesus

  910. that today

  911. they would not

  912. walk out of here

  913. resisting and refusing

  914. the offer of salvation

  915. through the finished work

  916. of Christ

  917. you work

  918. that you might be glorified

  919. and we ask this

  920. in Jesus name

  921. Amen

  922. let's

  923. pray
