  1. Truthfully, I never thought that this day would come.

  2. And for you who are probably relatively new to this ministry,

  3. !

  4. I had moved down here before my family had moved,

  5. and I was staying in the parsonage, right,

  6. the house that is right in front of the church.

  7. And I remember looking out across the field that was there at that time

  8. with a sober sense of frailty and fear.

  9. I remember distinctly thinking to myself,

  10. I won't last here six months.

  11. I had been pastoring in a small rural church in northeastern Ohio

  12. that, truthfully, when I went there,

  13. I intended to be buried in that community.

  14. I am one who has believed from childhood on

  15. that lasting relationships take work but also are worth it.

  16. I was called by this congregation.

  17. Judith and I had been members here

  18. before I was called to the pastorate in northeastern Ohio.

  19. And so it was the only call I received as a young pastor

  20. that I attended to.

  21. And I can remember arguing a little bit with God

  22. and saying I don't want to leave where I was.

  23. Maranatha was a larger church and a much bigger ministry,

  24. and I truthfully didn't think I would make it for six months.

  25. I am here today because of the grace of God,

  26. because of the persistent prayers of God's people.

  27. No pastor will ever endure without that.

  28. I'm also here because many of you over and over again gently admonished me

  29. and corrected and instructed,

  30. and God gave me a willingness to hear.

  31. As a younger man, I was rather brassy.

  32. I still can be that way.

  33. As I'm leaving the home this morning,

  34. I said to Judith,

  35. please pray for my humility.

  36. It's a lifelong battle.

  37. And you have ministered to me.

  38. I'm thankful.

  39. Ah, well, there's a part that I really like to say.

  40. Turn in your Bibles.

  41. I trust that John's prayer this morning,

  42. which I found to be reflective of things that you should pray

  43. when the Word of God is opened,

  44. I trust that it will not be the only prayer

  45. that will take place in the remainder of our time together.

  46. With that said, I want you to turn to John chapter 17,

    John 17 chapter mention

  47. and we're going to look at verse 18 as a frame.

  48. We're going to think this morning about setting our course for 2017.

  49. This month, January, the remainder of it,

  50. at least for the next four weeks,

  51. what is going to happen is I'm going to preach this Sunday.

  52. Pastor Shearer will preach next Sunday.

  53. I will preach the Sunday after that,

  54. and then he will preach the Sunday after that.

  55. First and third, Kenoyer.

  56. Second and fourth, Shearer.

  57. After that, we will work on a preaching rotation

  58. that will bring each of us to the pulpit

  59. roughly about 50% for the remainder of the year,

  60. give or take.

  61. Please don't keep a tab on how many times we are in,

  62. because I just tell you up front,

  63. there's always going to be little hiccups in life.

  64. Pastor Shearer is going to be going to California

  65. where Sarah's family is.

  66. They're going to be gone for three full weeks,

  67. so you may have me for three weeks extra there,

  68. but bear with it.

  69. It's all right.

  70. We'll get there.

  71. He'll make it up.

  72. But the purpose of this process of transition

  73. is an illustration of this congregation's

  74. very deliberate approach to ministry.

  75. And while I am going to address what we would call

  76. strategic initiatives this Sunday,

  77. and Pastor Shearer will follow up with that next Sunday,

  78. I want you to understand that it is not something

  79. that we discuss only on this Sunday,

  80. because if you were to think in any frame

  81. of what has taken place over the last several years,

  82. you would understand that this congregation

  83. and its prayer life and the energy of your thoughts

  84. and affections in part have been part of a strategic initiative

  85. of deliberately seeking a man that will take the ministry

  86. into our next phase and place.

  87. It has been something that we prayed about.

  88. You as a congregation agreed to over two years ago.

  89. A search committee that was framed at that time

  90. spent about two years seeking out a man

  91. that we would call our senior pastor-elect,

  92. and God brought him to us about, give or take,

  93. nine months ago.

  94. That was a strategic initiative.

  95. I can't say that the transition has been finished,

  96. but I will say that I am thankful for the process

  97. and progress and blessing that it has been to all of us.

  98. And when Pastor Shearer and I began praying and thinking together,

  99. one of the things that we began to discuss very early in our time

  100. as companions in the gospel was,

  101. okay, what are the things that we believe together

  102. God wants us to focus on?

  103. Pastor Shearer, in particular, was the one who set the frame

  104. of the matter of our working at being the kind of neighbors

  105. that God wants us to be.

  106. And he is going to take next week to kind of dive into that

  107. in greater detail and lay out an overview

  108. of what our small group ministries are going to be studying together

  109. for the next 12 weeks.

  110. Providentially, it will end up that the conclusion

  111. to the neighboring lessons that we're going to study

  112. are going to land right up against, guess what,

  113. national, spiritual, significant day, Easter.

  114. And I trust that we as a fellowship make our efforts

  115. and interest in ministering to other people

  116. that God puts us around more than just an event activity,

  117. but something that ends up being part of our DNA

  118. as a family of believers.

  119. So as we come to this matter of strategic initiatives,

  120. let me break it down into very, very simple terms

  121. and say, for one, we are committed to follow His instruction.

  122. We are committed to find the particulars of what He has for us.

  123. And then we are here also to affirm the affection

  124. that God wants us to have one for another in the family of God.

  125. I want us to think, first of all, this morning

  126. about following a command.

  127. We have some responsibility of recognizing

  128. a responsibility that He's put on us.

  129. And that's the reason I had you look there

  130. in John chapter 17, verse 18.

    John 17:18

  131. Let me read the passage for you there.

  132. As you sent me into the world,

  133. so I have sent them into the world.

  134. That little word, as, is one that carries

  135. a tremendous amount of significance and value.

  136. And the reason I say that is because that word

  137. communicates to us just exactly what Jesus meant

  138. when He said, hey, I'm sending you out into the world.

  139. We get sometimes lost up in the details of our lives

  140. and the business of making a living or raising a family

  141. or seeing to it that our kids receive an education,

  142. and we forget that we are here fundamentally

  143. for something more significant than that.

  144. We are here because Jesus saved us.

  145. And we are here for His agenda and His objective.

  146. And so when we look at this passage

  147. and we recognize what Jesus is praying for here,

  148. just hours in front of the cross,

  149. we understand that these words communicate

  150. a very significant responsibility

  151. and instruction that He has.

  152. He's praying for me.

  153. He's praying for you.

  154. And He says, listen, Father,

  155. in the same way, that word as means

  156. in the same way or in the same manner,

  157. for the same purpose,

  158. that You sent me into the world,

  159. so I have sent them into the world.

  160. So I ask you this question this morning

  161. just to kind of stop and think about it for a moment.

  162. When you think about what you're going to do tomorrow,

  163. how often do you actually stop and realize

  164. that tomorrow is a day that really is to be governed

  165. if we are thinking biblically

  166. and we're thinking in the light of eternity,

  167. tomorrow is a day to be governed

  168. by its value and effect

  169. upon the testimony and the glory of Christ?

  170. That's the way we should be thinking.

  171. When you walk in to work,

  172. your thoughts should not be,

  173. okay, how do I get through this day

  174. so I can get to Friday, which is payday,

  175. so I can have money for whatever it is

  176. that I'm here to do.

  177. No, no, no.

  178. When you walk into work,

  179. you're thinking to yourself,

  180. this day is a day that I have the opportunity

  181. of lifting up the glory

  182. and the supremacy of Christ

  183. and modeling the power of the gospel around me

  184. in the environment that He has placed me.

  185. How many of you recognize

  186. that you are where you are by divine appointment?

  187. You may think to yourself,

  188. well, I got it because of my education

  189. and because I had a better interview than so-and-so.

  190. No, no, no.

  191. You have what you have

  192. and you are where you are

  193. because God in His grace and His purpose

  194. puts you there if you're a believer

  195. for His glory and for His purposes.

  196. I'm not going to spend a lot of time

  197. on the text here this morning,

  198. but I just want to remind you

  199. that in blessing us with salvation

  200. and giving us life,

  201. it is not so that we can go about

  202. spending our energy for our own glory

  203. and our own significance, but for His.

  204. And so I want to put it here to you

  205. in very candid terms.

  206. We are here to do the same work

  207. that Jesus came to do.

  208. We are here to do the same work

  209. that Jesus came to do.

  210. And I want you to fix that in your mind

  211. as you think about why we are,

  212. when we gather together here

  213. as a body of believers

  214. to sit under the teaching of the Word of God,

  215. it is so that our minds and our thinking

  216. can be framed properly

  217. in the light of the Word.

  218. There is a natural tendency in all of us

  219. to have our hearts drift away

  220. from that which God would desire

  221. be the characteristic of our life.

  222. I think about that,

  223. the words of the song that says,

  224. prone to wonder,

  225. Lord, I feel it.

  226. Prone to leave the God I love.

  227. And so we need the reminder

  228. of the Word of God that says,

  229. here's what you're here for.

  230. Here's why I draw breath

  231. and I'm still present here

  232. among the living and not in eternity.

  233. And so I want you to think for a minute

  234. just for practical terms

  235. that when you go out the door

  236. tomorrow morning to go to work,

  237. you are going out the door

  238. not so you can have necessarily

  239. a second vacation home.

  240. You're not going out

  241. so you can spend the rest of your days

  242. kind of in indolence

  243. and self-centered ambition,

  244. but you are going out the door

  245. to serve the Lord Jesus Christ

  246. that someday you are going to stand before

  247. and give an account.

  248. And so when Jesus said these words here,

  249. there in John chapter 17, verse 18,

    John 17:18

  250. just like you sent me,

  251. can you imagine Jesus talking to the Father

  252. and saying, hey, you know what?

  253. I'm glad you sent me down here.

  254. I am just having a whale of a time.

  255. I'm just enjoying the fact

  256. that everybody loves me.

  257. No, he was actively engaged

  258. in the mission and the ministry

  259. that the Father sent him

  260. to be engaged in

  261. for the testimony

  262. and the glory of the cross.

  263. We who are his children

  264. and called to be ambassadors

  265. are here for the same mission

  266. that he sent us on.

  267. And I want you to recognize

  268. that in relationship to that command

  269. that we have to be sent for his purposes,

  270. I want you to understand

  271. that there is a day coming

  272. when each of us as a believer

  273. is going to give an account for this life.

  274. How many of you recognize

  275. that such a day is coming?

  276. Think with me just for a moment.

  277. Turn in your Bibles.

  278. You're there in John,

  279. but I want you to turn

  280. to 2 Corinthians chapter 5, verse 10.

    2 Corinthians 5:10

  281. Jesus said,

  282. I'm sending them for this reason.

  283. I want you to recognize

  284. that the day is coming

  285. when your energy

  286. and your effectiveness

  287. in the mission that he sent you for

  288. is going to be given an account.

  289. You're going to give an account for it.

  290. Look at 2 Corinthians chapter 5, verse 10.

    2 Corinthians 5:10

  291. So whether we are at home

  292. or away, verse 9,

  293. we make it our aim

  294. or ambition to please him.

  295. Question?

  296. Do you actually stop

  297. and think about that

  298. when you are at a baseball game

  299. and you're engaged

  300. in rooting on your particular child

  301. and saying,

  302. man, the most important thing

  303. is that he hit a home run

  304. or that he snagged that fly ball

  305. or that he looked spectacular

  306. or is your primary man.

  307. I want to be sure

  308. that I bring glory to Christ

  309. in what I'm doing.

  310. How many of you fathers here

  311. have ever stepped across the line

  312. and had to ask forgiveness

  313. for getting too wound up

  314. about the game?

  315. I'm one of them.

  316. I have to remind myself,

  317. this is for the glory of Christ.

  318. And here in verse 9,

  319. it says,

  320. I make it my ambition

  321. to please him.

  322. Verse 10,

  323. for,

  324. why do I make it my ambition

  325. to please him?

  326. For,

  327. we must all appear

  328. before the judgment seat of Christ

  329. so that each one

  330. may receive what is due

  331. for what he has done

  332. in the body,

  333. whether good or evil.

  334. The day is coming

  335. when I am going

  336. to give an account

  337. and you are going

  338. to give an account

  339. for the way in which

  340. you use the life

  341. that he gave you

  342. and use the abilities

  343. and resources

  344. the energy

  345. that he has appointed

  346. to you.

  347. He's going to say,

  348. what did you do

  349. with what I gave you?

  350. I want you to look

  351. at another passage

  352. in relationship to this.

  353. If you will,

  354. go to Romans chapter 14,

    Romans 14 chapter mention

  355. go back a little bit

  356. to Romans chapter 14,

    Romans 14:10–12

  357. verse 10 through 12.

  358. Part of what my point

  359. is in relationship

  360. to these different passages

  361. is that this issue

  362. of being accountable

  363. to the Lord Jesus

  364. for my life

  365. is not just a single statement

  366. made in one passage,

  367. but it is a theme

  368. running through

  369. the scriptures.

  370. Romans chapter 14,

    Romans 14:10

  371. verse 10.

  372. Why do you pass judgment

  373. on your brother?

  374. Are you?

  375. Why do you despise

  376. your brother?

  377. For we will all stand

  378. before the judgment seat

  379. of God.

  380. For it is written,

  381. As I live,

  382. says the Lord,

  383. every knee shall bow to me

  384. and every tongue

  385. shall confess to God.

  386. So then each of us

  387. will give an account

  388. for himself to God.

  389. The day is coming

  390. when you,

  391. when I,

  392. will stand before the Lord

  393. and give an account

  394. for our life.

  395. And in relationship to that,

  396. I want you to understand

  397. that we are going

  398. to be judged

  399. on the basis

  400. of the gifts

  401. that we've received

  402. and the responsibilities

  403. we have.

  404. And so if Jesus says to me,

  405. Tim,

  406. I am sending you out

  407. to do basically

  408. the same thing

  409. that my father

  410. was sent out to do.

  411. How's it going to go

  412. when he finally says,

  413. and how did you do

  414. at the job I gave you?

  415. And I say,

  416. well, you know,

  417. I didn't have much time.

  418. The truth of the matter is,

  419. is I was really interested

  420. in my retirement home.

  421. I really didn't have much time

  422. because I was so deeply invested

  423. in athletics.

  424. I didn't have much time

  425. because,

  426. you know what,

  427. you made me the way I am

  428. and I really like deer hunting

  429. and so I,

  430. you know,

  431. I can't do deer hunting

  432. and help people move

  433. at the same time.

  434. You know,

  435. I just have to decide

  436. which is more important.

  437. Do you follow that?

  438. Yeah,

  439. you think he's going to say,

  440. attaboy, Tim,

  441. that's a good guy.

  442. I really appreciate

  443. the fact you were self-focused.

  444. No.

  445. I want you to turn

  446. to one more passage.

  447. Let's get very practical

  448. about this.

  449. 1 Corinthians 3,

    1 Corinthians 3:13

  450. verse 13.

  451. Each one's works

  452. will become manifest

  453. for the day will disclose it

  454. because it will be revealed

  455. by fire

  456. and the fire will test

  457. what sort of work

  458. each one has done.

  459. If the work that anyone

  460. has built on the foundation

  461. survives,

  462. he will receive a reward.

  463. If anyone's work is burned up,

  464. he will suffer loss,

  465. though he himself

  466. will be saved,

  467. but only as through fire.

  468. Hey,

  469. ask yourself the question.

  470. When the day comes

  471. that you will give an account

  472. for the way you have

  473. used your life

  474. and your resources

  475. are some of the things

  476. that you have invested

  477. your energy

  478. and your resources in

  479. going to amount

  480. to a hill of beans

  481. in the scope of eternity?

  482. And the answer is

  483. for some,

  484. no.

  485. For some,

  486. no.

  487. And so as we think

  488. about being intentional

  489. as a body of believers,

  490. it's appropriate

  491. to call us to the task

  492. to recognize,

  493. hey,

  494. he sent me,

  495. he sent you

  496. for the same thing,

  497. for the same purpose.

  498. My life

  499. is to draw attention

  500. to the glory of the gospel

  501. and the power of the cross

  502. and at the end of the day

  503. what I do

  504. to bring testimony

  505. to the supremacy of Christ

  506. is all that counts

  507. in the scope of eternity.

  508. A little sign

  509. in our home,

  510. a reminder to me,

  511. my wife put it up,

  512. it says,

  513. only one life

  514. will soon be passed.

  515. I remember looking at that

  516. in my early 30s

  517. and think,

  518. what?

  519. How many of you

  520. remember being 30?

  521. How many of you

  522. aren't there yet?

  523. For you who aren't there yet,

  524. you're thinking,

  525. it will take forever.

  526. I remember looking at that sign

  527. in my 30s,

  528. only one life

  529. will soon be passed,

  530. only what's done

  531. for Christ will last.

  532. And I thought,

  533. yeah,

  534. I'm 30.

  535. A little poem

  536. you can remember

  537. and remind yourself

  538. that the day is coming

  539. that you will give an account

  540. to the Lord Jesus.

  541. And so,

  542. with a firm understanding

  543. of the fact

  544. that you're going to give

  545. an account to the Lord

  546. and that the things

  547. that you do

  548. that have no eternal value

  549. and significance

  550. are not going to last

  551. and are not going to bring credit

  552. to His name

  553. nor give you a crown

  554. of glory

  555. that you can give

  556. to the Lord Jesus.

  557. Let's think secondly,

  558. one is we're going to be judged,

  559. but secondly,

  560. I want you to find

  561. some direction

  562. for what we do

  563. in relationship

  564. to this matter

  565. of accounting

  566. and responsibility.

  567. I want you to turn

  568. in your Bibles

  569. to Luke chapter 10

    Luke 10:25–37

  570. verse 25

  571. through 37.

  572. I'll tell you

  573. that next week

  574. Pastor Shearer

  575. is going to teach

  576. on this passage

  577. in a far more extensive fashion,

  578. but we're looking

  579. at a little text here

  580. where Jesus has

  581. an attorney come to Him.

  582. Verse 25,

  583. Behold,

  584. a lawyer stood up

  585. to put Him to the test

  586. saying,

  587. Teacher,

  588. what shall I do

  589. to inherit eternal life?

  590. Hey, hey,

  591. what do I need to do

  592. to be saved?

  593. And I want you

  594. to understand

  595. that in the thinking

  596. of the majority

  597. of the culture

  598. in which this question

  599. was posed,

  600. the way in which

  601. you worked your way

  602. into heaven

  603. was by being a good person,

  604. doing good works,

  605. doing the right things.

  606. And Jesus answered him

  607. in essence

  608. and said what?

  609. He said,

  610. You know,

  611. you are to love

  612. the Lord your God

  613. and to love your neighbor

  614. as yourself.

  615. The first

  616. and second commandment.

  617. It's interesting

  618. to see there

  619. in verse 29,

  620. but he,

  621. desiring to justify himself,

  622. what does it mean

  623. when it says

  624. to justify himself?

  625. What he was trying

  626. to do

  627. was set

  628. very specific

  629. boundaries

  630. on just how

  631. loving he really was.

  632. Hey,

  633. everybody smile

  634. just for a minute

  635. because I'm talking

  636. to you.

  637. Huh?

  638. You listening?

  639. There are some people

  640. we're great at loving.

  641. Did you know

  642. that the Lord Jesus

  643. intends to bring people

  644. into your sphere

  645. of influence

  646. that you are really

  647. going to struggle

  648. at loving?

  649. How many of you

  650. learned that already?

  651. And how many of you

  652. learned that

  653. when you do your best

  654. to push them

  655. out of the circle,

  656. hello,

  657. Jesus hates a vacuum

  658. and he replaces them.

  659. Does that make sense?

  660. Sometimes we try

  661. to push them out

  662. by being snarky.

  663. Sometimes we try

  664. to push them out

  665. by just avoiding.

  666. They're all different

  667. kinds of strategies

  668. and he keeps on

  669. bringing replacements.

  670. The attorney was saying,

  671. okay, okay,

  672. I get this loving deal

  673. but can I draw

  674. a little circle,

  675. us four and no more

  676. kind of thing?

  677. There are some people

  678. I do love.

  679. Oh,

  680. I'm really good at it.

  681. And so what happens

  682. we find here

  683. when this guy

  684. puts his foot in his mouth

  685. and tries to justify himself

  686. that Jesus tells

  687. a little story.

  688. Now you always know

  689. you're in trouble

  690. when Jesus uses a story.

  691. Isn't that right?

  692. Huh?

  693. You got that one figured out?

  694. He's trying to ding you

  695. and he's trying

  696. to do it gently.

  697. Okay?

  698. It's like,

  699. Bubba,

  700. you're not getting this one

  701. so I'm going to use

  702. a little story

  703. to kind of let

  704. the thing sink in.

  705. And Jesus tells the story

  706. about the good Samaritan.

  707. who actually

  708. steps in

  709. where two other individuals,

  710. a priest,

  711. if anybody

  712. had formal responsibility

  713. to show mercy

  714. to a wounded fellow Jew,

  715. it would have been

  716. a priest

  717. and a Levite.

  718. You follow that?

  719. I got to tell you,

  720. when it comes to moves

  721. on Saturdays,

  722. pastor will be there.

  723. One of the reasons

  724. that I'm going to be there

  725. and Pastor Shearer

  726. and Pastor Andrew,

  727. it's not because

  728. we're paid to do it,

  729. but we are examples

  730. to the flock of God.

  731. Does that make sense?

  732. I shouldn't expect you

  733. to do something

  734. that I'm not willing to do.

  735. Now I'm telling you,

  736. I'm at the point

  737. where I don't carry

  738. washing machines

  739. like I used to.

  740. And that's why

  741. I like heavy lifters.

  742. Do you know

  743. who a heavy lifter is?

  744. The guys between,

  745. I was reading this morning

  746. in my devotions

  747. where that the Levites,

  748. they started working

  749. at 25 and they quit at 50.

  750. Does anybody know

  751. why they did that?

  752. That was the heavy lifting phase.

  753. Some of you are maybe 24,

  754. but I give you an exemption.

  755. You can go ahead.

  756. Join the crowd.

  757. The point that I want you

  758. to recognize here

  759. in this passage

  760. is that this business

  761. of who we love

  762. is something that

  763. he has charged us

  764. with a responsibility to.

  765. And the way we go about

  766. doing that love

  767. is something

  768. that's pretty significant.

  769. He wants us

  770. to recognize this.

  771. The story of the Good Samaritan

  772. is an illustration

  773. of just how far

  774. biblical love takes us.

  775. And by the way,

  776. who is it that we're

  777. responsible for loving?

  778. Not just those

  779. that we're familiar

  780. and friendly with,

  781. but all those

  782. that God puts in our path.

  783. And so as you look

  784. at this passage,

  785. you recognize

  786. that the responsibility

  787. we have of loving

  788. and serving other people

  789. is something that is

  790. far more significant

  791. than we may think.

  792. I want you to recognize

  793. that often what you do

  794. precedes what you say.

  795. And the way in which

  796. we behave

  797. and serve one another

  798. is a gospel testimony

  799. long before we have

  800. an opportunity

  801. of actually sharing

  802. the truth

  803. of how salvation

  804. is only through

  805. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  806. Do you understand that?

  807. Most of the time,

  808. people come to Christ

  809. not because of

  810. drive-by witnessing.

  811. What does drive-by witnessing

  812. reference?

  813. Truth of the matter is,

  814. I'll tell you,

  815. I remember in India

  816. when we would go out

  817. in the cars,

  818. and there weren't

  819. very many cars

  820. when I was growing up

  821. in India,

  822. I can tell you that,

  823. and just the car

  824. driving down the road

  825. was a media event.

  826. And we thought

  827. that one of the

  828. very efficient ways

  829. of passing out tracks

  830. was to just kind of

  831. take a wad of them

  832. and kind of fan them

  833. out in the slipstream

  834. of the car.

  835. Do you know what

  836. happened with tracks

  837. when you put them

  838. out the window

  839. in a slipstream of a car?

  840. Today, we would call it

  841. littering here in America,

  842. but out in India

  843. was track passing.

  844. I mean,

  845. hundreds of them,

  846. people would pick them up.

  847. I'm not real sure

  848. what they did with them,

  849. but we passed them out.

  850. I've got to tell you something.

  851. Drive-by ministry like that

  852. is grossly ineffective.

  853. You follow that?

  854. People don't need that.

  855. What people need

  856. is they need to see people

  857. that are willing

  858. to be good Samaritans

  859. to the needs

  860. that people have

  861. and it is when

  862. we are being good Samaritans

  863. that God opens up

  864. the gospel opportunities.

  865. So I want you to stop

  866. and realize

  867. that when you look

  868. at this passage

  869. and we're going to deal

  870. with this matter

  871. more carefully,

  872. in this coming year,

  873. we want our fellowship

  874. to be more intentional

  875. in our efforts

  876. to meet the needs

  877. of people who need Jesus.

  878. I want it to be something

  879. that is a conversation point,

  880. not just for talking,

  881. but because we're sharing

  882. things that we're going

  883. to be praying about together,

  884. that we are ministering

  885. to our neighbors.

  886. Let me ask a question

  887. just for a second.

  888. How many of you can name,

  889. let's try this,

  890. just raise your hands

  891. if you can,

  892. how many of you can name

  893. at least six different families

  894. that are within

  895. eyeshot of your home?

  896. Just six.

  897. Six.

  898. You can name

  899. six different families

  900. that are within

  901. eyeshot of your home.

  902. I'm not going to have you

  903. raise your hands

  904. on this one.

  905. How many of you

  906. are consciously

  907. and deliberately

  908. praying for those

  909. six different families?

  910. Would that be

  911. an appropriate thing

  912. to do?

  913. How many of you

  914. are actively engaged

  915. in doing acts

  916. of ministry

  917. and service

  918. that show them

  919. that you love them

  920. and are interested in them?

  921. By the way,

  922. we've only had one snow

  923. so far this year

  924. that was worthy

  925. of my snowblower.

  926. But guess what

  927. I was doing

  928. with my snowblower

  929. after I got it

  930. fired up?

  931. Oh, we have three

  932. snowblowers in the garage

  933. that we're trying

  934. to give away.

  935. There's no cost

  936. associated.

  937. Just take them.

  938. Done.

  939. After I got it

  940. fired up,

  941. I'm scampering up

  942. and down the neighborhood.

  943. Guess what I'm doing?

  944. Blowing snow.

  945. Why am I doing that?

  946. Because I'm a

  947. Baptist pastor.

  948. No, because God

  949. wants me to be

  950. a Samaritan.

  951. And by the way,

  952. those activities

  953. end up being things

  954. that resonate

  955. significantly

  956. in the lives

  957. of unbelievers

  958. because they want

  959. to know,

  960. why are you doing this?

  961. So when we think

  962. about the direction

  963. for this fellowship,

  964. one of the things

  965. that we are going

  966. to work at,

  967. we are going

  968. to recognize

  969. that Christ brought us

  970. here into this world.

  971. He kept us here.

  972. He brought us

  973. to salvation

  974. and we are here

  975. for the well-being

  976. and the gospel testimony.

  977. And so how are we

  978. going to go about

  979. doing it?

  980. We're going to

  981. minister people's needs.

  982. We are here

  983. to show his heart.

  984. We are here

  985. to show his heart.

  986. And this coming year,

  987. consciously and deliberately,

  988. we are going to

  989. consciously set aside

  990. time.

  991. We're going to be

  992. engaged in

  993. activities that are

  994. going to allow us

  995. to minister

  996. more directly

  997. in the neighborhoods

  998. that he has put us in.

  999. give you an illustration.

  1000. On July the 4th,

1001. it is a big holiday weekend

  1002. here in our community.

  1003. Isn't that right?

  1004. I mean,

1005. I live on the west side

  1006. and people,

  1007. I'm not sure

  1008. if it's gunfire

  1009. or firecrackers,

1010. but I got to tell you,

  1011. it goes on

  1012. for a solid week

  1013. and a half.

1014. Judith is in the nursery,

  1015. but she'll testify.

  1016. She says,

  1017. is that gunfire

  1018. or is that firecrackers?

  1019. I don't know.

  1020. But July the 4th

  1021. is a great time

  1022. to invite people

  1023. over for a barbecue,

  1024. right?

  1025. Okay?

  1026. It's a great time

  1027. to build relationship.

  1028. Memorial Day,

  1029. Labor Day,

  1030. there are times

  1031. that we are going

  1032. to consciously

  1033. and deliberately focus

1034. on how do we develop

  1035. closer relationships

  1036. with our neighbors.

  1037. Why?

  1038. Because we're here

  1039. to show his heart

1040. and to minister to people.

  1041. The other thing

  1042. that we're going

1043. to focus on this year

  1044. is to affirm

  1045. our distinction

1046. as a group of people

  1047. that know Christ.

1048. I want you to look

  1049. in your Bible.

  1050. You're there in Luke,

  1051. but I want you

  1052. to turn over

  1053. to John 17,

    John 17:23

  1054. verse 23.

  1055. John 17,

    John 17:23

  1056. verse 23.

  1057. Here's Jesus praying,

  1058. I in them

  1059. and you in me

  1060. that they may become

  1061. perfectly one

  1062. so that the world

  1063. may know

  1064. that you sent me

  1065. and love them

1066. even as you love me.

  1067. Now, I want you

  1068. to have an underline

  1069. that you place

  1070. under that little statement

  1071. so that the world

  1072. may know

  1073. that you sent me.

  1074. How will the world

  1075. know

  1076. that the Father

  1077. sent Jesus?

  1078. In that passage,

  1079. how will the world

  1080. know

  1081. that the Father

  1082. sent Jesus?

  1083. Banner?

  1084. Public testimony?

  1085. Passing out tracts?

  1086. Pass.

  1087. No.

1088. It will be the way

1089. in which we get along

  1090. with one another

1091. in the family of God.

  1092. Isn't that right?

  1093. How many of you

  1094. have noticed

1095. that some of the neighbors

  1096. that you have

1097. really don't like each other?

  1098. Have you noticed that?

  1099. I'm amazed

  1100. at how quickly

  1101. people in my neighborhood

1102. are ready to tell me

  1103. other things

  1104. about my neighbors

  1105. that I don't need to know

  1106. and how irritated

  1107. they are

  1108. at the fact

  1109. that when they walk

  1110. their dogs,

  1111. their dogs don't have

  1112. social etiquette.

  1113. Did you read

  1114. the tea leaves

  1115. on that one?

  1116. And they're concerned

  1117. about the way

  1118. some people

  1119. mow their lawns.

  1120. I mean,

1121. do I need to know?

  1122. No.

  1123. The unbelieving world

  1124. is at odds

  1125. with each other

  1126. all the time.

  1127. And the thing

  1128. that should characterize

  1129. believers

  1130. is that we have

  1131. relationships

  1132. that are marked

  1133. by affection

  1134. and by unity.

  1135. So what's it going

  1136. to take

  1137. for us to have

  1138. a better testimony

  1139. to the unbelieving world?

  1140. Let me kind of

1141. rattle off a quick one.

  1142. Number one,

  1143. by being quicker

  1144. to show our love

  1145. and not in going

  1146. out gossiping.

  1147. How's that one?

  1148. Can you write

  1149. that one down?

  1150. Just tag it there.

  1151. Be quicker

  1152. to show our love

  1153. and not going

  1154. out gossiping.

  1155. Galatians chapter 6

    Galatians 6:1

  1156. verse 1 and 2.

  1157. Does anybody

  1158. know what it says?

  1159. It says,

  1160. when you see

  1161. a brother overtaken

  1162. in a fault,

  1163. you don't bring it

1164. up in a prayer room.

  1165. What do you do?

1166. You go to that person

  1167. alone and let him

  1168. know the concern

  1169. that you have.

1170. I said to the deacons,

  1171. yesterday morning,

  1172. I said,

  1173. you know what?

  1174. A pastoral ministry

  1175. would be easier

  1176. if God's people

  1177. consistently practiced

  1178. Matthew 18 verse 15.

    Matthew 18:15

  1179. Does anybody know

  1180. what that passage is?

  1181. If you've got a problem,

  1182. do what?

  1183. Ask a neighbor

  1184. to pray with you

  1185. about it.

  1186. Tell three other people

1187. so they can kind of

  1188. share with you

  1189. their concern

  1190. and their similarity.

  1191. No, no, no.

1192. Go talk to that person

  1193. privately and say,

  1194. hey.

  1195. So we're going

  1196. to work at that.

  1197. We're going to work

  1198. at helping one another

  1199. not let things fester.

  1200. We're going to work

  1201. to be conscious

  1202. and deliberate

  1203. in encouraging

  1204. one another

  1205. to love each other.

  1206. In 1 John chapter 3

    1 John 3:14

  1207. verse 14

1208. and again in 1 John

    1 John 4:20

  1209. chapter 4 verse 20,

  1210. the apostle makes

  1211. this very,

  1212. very clear connection

  1213. that the thing

  1214. that proves

  1215. the authenticity

  1216. of our conversion

  1217. is not

  1218. our theological

  1219. quiz score

  1220. but our genuine

  1221. affection

  1222. for one another.

  1223. And by the way,

  1224. when there is

  1225. genuine affection,

  1226. one of the things

  1227. that characterizes

  1228. that genuine affection

  1229. is that we tell

  1230. the truth in what?

  1231. What?

  1232. In love.

1233. We don't let the sun

  1234. go down on

  1235. our wrath.

1236. I've got to tell you

  1237. one of the things

  1238. that blows me away.

  1239. When I hear about

  1240. a believer that has

  1241. had some problem

  1242. festering with another

  1243. believer for decades,

  1244. a situation where

  1245. a person was not

  1246. willing to go into

  1247. a room to work

  1248. on a project

  1249. with another person

  1250. because the person

  1251. in that room

  1252. they were irritated

  1253. with,

  1254. that's not effective

  1255. gospel living.

  1256. Amen?

  1257. And we're going

  1258. to work at that.

  1259. And all God's people

  1260. said,

  1261. yes,

  1262. that's a good idea.

  1263. Let's try that again

  1264. because I know I'm

  1265. a little enthusiastic

  1266. about that

  1267. and you guys are

  1268. coming close to

  1269. going to sleep.

  1270. Let's try that again.

  1271. We're going to work

  1272. at that.

  1273. Yes!

  1274. So,

1275. if you have a problem

  1276. with me,

  1277. and I'll give you

  1278. an opportunity,

  1279. not on purpose.

1280. If you have a problem

  1281. with me,

  1282. don't tell everybody

  1283. else,

  1284. come and tell me.

  1285. And,

1286. if I come to you

  1287. and I'm having

  1288. a problem with Jack,

  1289. so you understand this,

1290. if I come to you

  1291. and I'm having

  1292. a problem with Jack

  1293. and you figure out

  1294. that I'm having

  1295. a problem with Jack,

  1296. what you say,

  1297. Jack's my friend.

  1298. I'm using him

  1299. as an illustration

1300. so that you don't go out

  1301. and put on something

  1302. on Facebook

  1303. about Jack and I

  1304. not getting along together.

  1305. I had to stop.

  1306. Well,

1307. we'll try Pastor Saul too.

  1308. Jack and Pastor Saul,

  1309. I'm talking to you

  1310. about both of them.

  1311. you say,

  1312. Pastor,

  1313. here's the standard thing

1314. God's people need to say.

  1315. How did it go

1316. when you talked to Jack?

  1317. Let's try that.

  1318. How did it go

1319. when you talked to Jack?

  1320. I'll say it slower

1321. so you can get it.

  1322. How did it go

1323. when you talked to Jack?

1324. You guys are with it.

  1325. Hey,

  1326. I'm going to get

  1327. to retire early.

  1328. You get this

  1329. Matthew 18,

  1330. 15 thing down,

  1331. it won't be a problem.

  1332. I can go out

1333. and deal a whole lot more

  1334. with people

  1335. that don't know Jesus.

  1336. Amen?

1337. There are some of us here

1338. that need to be convicted

1339. about not being doing this

  1340. right now.

  1341. Do you understand

  1342. that point?

  1343. Why would a pastor

  1344. preach on something

  1345. that has no relevance

  1346. to the God-fearing people

  1347. that he stands

  1348. in front of?

  1349. I don't want this

  1350. to be a problem

  1351. in the future, beloved.

  1352. And all God's people

  1353. said,

  1354. Amen.

  1355. Let's close.

  1356. Father,

1357. I think about the words

  1358. of Zechariah,

  1359. not by might

  1360. nor by power,

  1361. but by my spirit,

  1362. saith the Lord.

  1363. You intend

  1364. for us to be

  1365. a godly,

  1366. holy,

  1367. gospel-passionate

  1368. people

  1369. that were drawn

  1370. out of the pit,

  1371. ruined,

  1372. broken,

  1373. called to be servants

  1374. of the living God,

  1375. to live holy,

  1376. passionate

  1377. lives

  1378. for the glory

  1379. of Christ,

  1380. loving the lost

  1381. and loving one another.

  1382. And we are convicted

1383. that we need to grow

  1384. in this area

  1385. this year.

1386. we ask for the power

  1387. of the spirit

  1388. to break our hearts

  1389. and to energize us

  1390. for the testimony

  1391. of Christ.

1392. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1393. Amen.

  1394. Amen.
