  1. Well, it's always a blessing to be here Sunday after Sunday and be reminded of who Christ

  2. ! through the ministry of the Word of God that comes to us in so many different aspects.

  3. ! Through singing of songs and even through the instrumental of that song and seeing the scripture

  4. there for us to meditate on as we were listening to the music itself and through the special music

  5. that happens, through the ministry of teaching that happens in the Sunday school setting and now

  6. in church time as our children are going to be going out there. But now, to sit underneath the

  7. Word of God and to be reminded of what God has for us is a tremendous blessing. And then later on,

  8. as many of you will be going to small groups and then throughout this week we'll be coming back on

  9. Wednesday night or your conversations with individuals throughout the week in the ministry

  10. of the Word that is happening day by day is a tremendous blessing for us as a people to be

  11. able to do that freely here in the United States. Well, as I was thinking a little bit this morning

  12. and throughout this week about the message and the passage for today, something that just came to my

  13. mind is how busy life seems to be. Do you ever find yourself kind of getting caught up in the rat race,

  14. the flow of the schedule and the difficulties and complexities of life and all the things that

  15. bombard you from day to day that just continue to overwhelm? I mean, if you're a husband or a wife,

  16. there's the desire to meet one another's needs and to meet expectations and how often we as husbands

  17. joke around about that honey-do list that's waiting for us on the weekends so that we can get some of

  18. those things finished in the house that we tend to put off during the week. Or if you're a mom and you're

  19. trying to get your kids back and forth to all the activities that they're a part of, whether it be

  20. sports activities or school activities or the play or the musical or whatever it might be, the challenges

  21. of life that tend to invade the day-to-day. And of course, if you're involved in any kind of

  22. business, if you're employed in any way, you know that there's the challenges of trying to meet

  23. expectations of your boss. Then there's the difficulties that often happen in the office

  24. dynamic of trying to not step on people's toes and trying to not hurt people's feelings. And if

  25. you're a manager, to try to manage that team without causing any degree of friction in your workplace.

  26. And that can be a challenge. And then add to that all the things that we just kind of add to our

  27. plate from day to day. The important things like watching football games that are happening today.

  28. Or the things that happen just keeping up with the day-to-day duties of house and home and maintenance

  29. of cars and all of these things that bombard us day after day that sometimes it's just exhausting.

  30. Have you ever stepped back and wondered,

  31. if I could just move out into the country,

  32. if I could just kind of pull away from this rat race and then everything would be simpler.

  33. And of course, those of you who grew up on a farm

  34. know the fallacy of that and all the

  35. work that comes in to being on the farm and managing the property and taking care of

  36. the animals and all that is involved with that.

  37. And maybe you're wishing you could move into the city so everything would be simpler.

  38. But do you ever think,

  39. God, if there was just

  40. one or two things

  41. that I could concentrate on.

  42. Just one or two things that I could devote my energy to.

  43. If you could condense the scripture down to just two commands,

  44. then my life would be really easy.

  45. And you know where I'm going with this.

  46. Because, in fact, Jesus did do that for us.

  47. In fact, Jesus did say that all of the law and the prophets,

  48. the 66 books that we have in the scriptures,

  49. have been condensed down to two summary statements.

  50. Two guiding principles.

  51. Two commands that God has given to us

  52. to make life simple.

  53. Or simpler.

  54. And if we align ourselves to God's perspectives,

  55. if we order our priorities

  56. so that God is pleased in these two areas,

  57. we'll be fulfilling all that God expects of us

  58. from Genesis to Revelation.

  59. That is a little liberating thought, isn't it?

  60. And we're going to take a look at

  61. one of those commands,

  62. the second of those commands,

  63. in Luke chapter 10 this morning.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  64. So turn with me, if you would,

  65. to Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  66. And I want to begin to look at this little narrative,

  67. this account of Jesus' life.

  68. And I want us to understand

  69. the significance of this command,

  70. love your neighbor as yourself.

  71. Of course, it flows after the first and great commandment,

  72. which is to love the Lord your God

  73. with all your heart,

  74. with all your soul,

  75. and with all your might.

  76. That's the first and greatest commandment.

  77. And the secondary commandment,

  78. the one that follows soon after,

  79. is loving your neighbor as yourself.

  80. And we'll find,

  81. as we begin to do this in our life,

  82. as we begin to align ourself to his perspective

  83. in relationship to loving our neighbors

  84. as we love ourself,

  85. that then it'll make a love for God

  86. a little clearer.

  87. There's something about loving difficult people.

  88. There's something about understanding the challenges

  89. of that employee or that distant relative,

  90. perhaps,

  91. that always seems to make trouble for you.

  92. There's something about that

  93. that points you

  94. to the wonder of God's love

  95. for you and for me

  96. as stinkers of people,

  97. as stubborn individuals,

  98. as self-oriented.

  99. We begin to appreciate

  100. the magnitude of God's love for us

  101. as we apply this love for others.

  102. So look with me, if you would,

  103. at Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  104. And I want to just kind of begin

  105. to read this together.

  106. We're going to take this just a verse at a time.

  107. And I want to help us to understand

  108. the significance,

  109. the significance of loving your neighbor

  110. as yourself.

  111. Let me read.

  112. Luke chapter 10, verse 25.

    Luke 10:25

  113. If you're a guest with us this morning,

  114. in the Pew Bible,

  115. on page 869,

  116. it says this,

  117. And behold,

  118. a lawyer stood up

  119. to put him to the test,

  120. saying,

  121. Teacher,

  122. what shall I do

  123. to inherit eternal life?

  124. What shall I do

  125. to inherit eternal life?

  126. Now,

  127. this is an important question

  128. that we're going to delve in today.

  129. And I want you to know

  130. that this is the ultimate question.

  131. This is the most significant question

  132. that anybody in this world

  133. could ever ask

  134. because it involves

  135. your future trajectory.

  136. It involves your future destination.

  137. And so here we are.

  138. This lawyer,

  139. or this scribe,

  140. is asking this question.

  141. He stands up to put Jesus to the test.

  142. Now,

  143. to help us get a sense of the context,

  144. where is Jesus in the flow of his ministry?

  145. Let me just describe

  146. some of these things for us.

  147. First,

  148. this is Jesus.

  149. He's kind of in the back end,

  150. the tail end of his ministry.

  151. He's six to eight months away from the cross.

  152. He has already set his face

  153. to go to Jerusalem.

  154. That happened in Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  155. And now,

  156. he is kind of dotting his way

  157. through Samaria and through Judea,

  158. various kinds of ministry

  159. in various places,

  160. making his way gradually

  161. to Jerusalem

  162. for that final moment

  163. that will climax

  164. in his death,

  165. in his resurrection.

  166. Now,

  167. Jesus has seen his fair share

  168. of antagonism.

  169. And this hostility

  170. from the scribes

  171. and the Pharisees

  172. continues to rise.

  173. Their difficulty

  174. with his ministry

  175. is almost in your face.

  176. It's almost non-stop.

  177. Wherever he goes,

  178. from city to city,

  179. he knows he can be met

  180. and confronted

  181. by this group of individuals

  182. who is always challenging

  183. his statements,

  184. who's always questioning

  185. his authority,

  186. who's always raising questions

  187. about his origination

  188. and wondering whether or not

  189. he's somebody who's credible.

  190. Jesus has already been transfigured,

  191. and on at least two occasions,

  192. he's already told his disciples

  193. that he's going to Jerusalem

  194. to die

  195. and to rise again.

  196. His Galilean ministry

  197. has come to a close,

  198. and now here Jesus is

  199. somewhere,

  200. perhaps even on his way

  201. to Jerusalem

  202. to make,

  203. he's here,

  204. and he is answering

  205. this question

  206. somewhere along the way.

  207. In the sequence of events,

  208. we find Jesus

  209. in the flow of ministry,

  210. and he's visited Jerusalem

  211. or the surrounding area

  212. of Jerusalem

  213. three times

  214. before he actually goes

  215. to the cross.

  216. We find that in

  217. the book of the Gospel of John

  218. as we're moving through.

  219. And here,

  220. this lawyer

  221. is putting Jesus

  222. to the test.

  223. He stands up,

  224. which was just a,

  225. was a sign of respect,

  226. and Jesus,

  227. even though this is

  228. in a public instance,

  229. is dealing with this person

  230. individually,

  231. seeking to draw out

  232. his heart.

  233. And I want us to see,

  234. first of all,

  235. that this question

  236. affects your eternity.

  237. This is a significant question,

  238. who is my neighbor,

  239. because it's a question

  240. that affects your eternity.

  241. This lawyer says,

  242. what shall I do

  243. to inherit eternal life?

  244. This lawyer or scribe

  245. was an expert

  246. in the interpretation

  247. and the understanding

  248. of the law,

  249. the application

  250. of the Mosaic law

  251. and rabbinical traditions

  252. for the Jewish people.

  253. As an expert,

  254. he would have given

  255. most of his life

  256. to the memorization

  257. and the study

  258. of the scripture.

  259. Certainly having

  260. the books of Genesis,

  261. Exodus,

  262. Leviticus,

  263. Numbers,

  264. and Deuteronomy

  265. memorized,

  266. kind of placed

  267. in his memory bank,

  268. but perhaps

  269. many of the other

  270. Old Testament books

  271. as well.

  272. He was the go-to man

  273. when it came

  274. to knowledge

  275. about the scripture,

  276. doctrines that the law

  277. would have expounded.

  278. He would have known

  279. the intricacies

  280. of the commands,

  281. the history of Israel

  282. and the specifics

  283. related to God's word

  284. to the prophets.

  285. But here we find him

  286. putting Christ

  287. to the test.

  288. Look at that

  289. at the very beginning

  290. of verse 25.

  291. He stood up

  292. and put him

  293. to the test.

  294. Now,

  295. we don't know his heart

  296. and Luke doesn't tell us

  297. what's going on inside

  298. at this point,

  299. but we find that

  300. he is challenging

  301. Christ in some way,

  302. perhaps seeking

  303. to discredit his ministry

  304. or perhaps trying

  305. to verify

  306. whether or not

  307. he was the kind

  308. of religious figure

  309. that the crowds

  310. should follow.

  311. As a scribe

  312. and as an expert

  313. in the law,

  314. he would be

  315. the go-to guy

  316. to validate

  317. a ministry

  318. of a religious figure

  319. and maybe people

  320. were coming to him

  321. asking him,

  322. was Jesus somebody

  323. to be trusted?

  324. Well,

  325. here he is

  326. standing up

  327. and asking

  328. this significant

  329. question,

  330. what does it take

  331. to inherit

  332. eternal life?

  333. This is

  334. the ultimate question

  335. and the answer

  336. to this question

  337. is imperative.

  338. It is non-negotiable.

  339. It is not optional.

  340. That's the significance

  341. of this question.

  342. What shall I do

  343. to inherit

  344. eternal life?

  345. the implications

  346. of the answer

  347. for this question

  348. will determine

  349. your destination

  350. for eternity.

  351. That's the significance

  352. of this question.

  353. I want to bring it

  354. all home to us

  355. as we think about

  356. the significance

  357. of the answer

  358. to this

  359. very important question.

  360. And for such

  361. an important question,

  362. one would think

  363. that Jesus

  364. would be happy

  365. to make the answer

  366. clear.

  367. Well,

  368. let me tell you

  369. how it happens.

  370. Let me make it

  371. very clear

  372. what it takes.

  373. And yet,

  374. what we'll find

  375. in this continuing

  376. narrative

  377. is that Jesus

  378. is interested

  379. in drawing

  380. this lawyer out

  381. and helping

  382. to interact

  383. with him

  384. and build

  385. relationship

  386. and engage

  387. him in some

  388. level of discussion.

  389. So Jesus

  390. defers the question

  391. back to this lawyer

  392. so that he can

  393. draw him

  394. into this discussion

  395. and so they can

  396. begin to make

  397. a connection

  398. over this very

  399. important

  400. and significant

  401. topic.

  402. That draws us

  403. to the next

  404. aspect of this

  405. question.

  406. Not only

  407. affects your

  408. eternity,

  409. but it also

  410. is anchored

  411. in history.

  412. In order to look

  413. towards the future,

  414. it would be

  415. important for

  416. this lawyer

  417. to look

  418. to the past.

  419. He would need

  420. to look

  421. to the law.

  422. Notice what

  423. Jesus says

  424. in verse 26.

  425. He says to him,

  426. What is written

  427. in the law?

  428. How do you

  429. read it?

  430. Now,

  431. at face value,

  432. this is not

  433. the answer

  434. that one

  435. would expect.

  436. What is written

  437. in the law?

  438. Is that what it

  439. takes?

  440. To be a law

  441. keeper?

  442. That I'm a

  443. law keeper

  444. and because of

  445. doing all of

  446. the things,

  447. aligning myself

  448. to the commands

  449. that God

  450. has set in

  451. the law?

  452. That's what

  453. it takes

  454. to be a

  455. person that's

  456. headed to

  457. the kingdom?

  458. One would

  459. not expect

  460. Jesus to

  461. move that

  462. direction.

  463. And yet,

  464. that is exactly

  465. the direction

  466. that Jesus

  467. takes.

  468. And again,

  469. Jesus is trying

  470. to draw out

  471. this lawyer,

  472. this scribe,

  473. this expert

  474. in the law.

  475. He knows

  476. this is his

  477. area of

  478. expertise.

  479. So he

  480. continues to

  481. draw him

  482. out and

  483. to feed

  484. on this

  485. curiosity

  486. in the

  487. hopes of

  488. helping to

  489. lead this

  490. individual,

  491. this scribe,

  492. to a right

  493. understanding of

  494. why the law

  495. was given

  496. and what the

  497. law actually

  498. says about

  499. a person's

  500. life.

  501. What would

  502. he find?

  503. What would

  504. he discover

  505. as he looks

  506. into the

  507. perfect law

  508. of liberty?

  509. What would

  510. he find

  511. as he is

  512. understanding

  513. the expectations

  514. of God

  515. for our

  516. lives?

  517. I want us

  518. to recognize

  519. that in

  520. looking back,

  521. Jesus is

  522. helping to

  523. establish the

  524. fact that

  525. he is the

  526. Alpha and

  527. the Omega,

  528. the beginning

  529. and the end.

  530. He is the

  531. unchanging God

  532. and his

  533. standards and

  534. his character

  535. are the same

  536. yesterday,

  537. today,

  538. and forever.

  539. You see,

  540. what the law

  541. is,

  542. is not a

  543. reflection

  544. necessarily

  545. of God's

  546. desire to

  547. box you

  548. in and

  549. to make

  550. you compliant

  551. as much as

  552. the law

  553. is an

  554. expression

  555. or a

  556. reflection

  557. of God's

  558. character

  559. himself.

  560. The reason

  561. why God

  562. has given

  563. us the

  564. law

  565. is not

  566. so that

  567. we have

  568. some level

  569. of measuring

  570. up to his

  571. expectations,

  572. but so

  573. that we

  574. can really

  575. get a

  576. better

  577. picture

  578. of who

  579. he is.

  580. His

  581. character

  582. comes

  583. through

  584. the law.

  585. His

  586. purity,

  587. his

  588. righteousness,

  589. his

  590. holiness,

  591. and as

  592. we compare

  593. ourselves

  594. in looking

  595. at the

  596. law,

  597. we recognize

  598. that we

  599. fall

  600. woefully

  601. short

  602. of the

  603. standard.

  604. There is

  605. nothing that

  606. we can

  607. do to

  608. measure up

  609. to the

  610. expectations

  611. that God

  612. has given.

  613. And in

  614. this

  615. stunning

  616. reply,

  617. not what

  618. we would

  619. expect,

  620. Jesus

  621. seeks to

  622. reaffirm

  623. the significance

  624. of the

  625. law and

  626. connect it

  627. with what

  628. he has

  629. said and

  630. stated already

  631. in the

  632. past,

  633. that he

  634. has come

  635. not to

  636. abolish

  637. the law

  638. but to

  639. fulfill

  640. it,

  641. and that

  642. he will

  643. fulfill

  644. the law

  645. in

  646. himself.

  647. The law

  648. does have

  649. demands

  650. that must

  651. be met

  652. and they

  653. can only

  654. be met

  655. in Christ.

  656. Well,

  657. the lawyer

  658. has the

  659. right answer

  660. as we

  661. find in

  662. verse 27.

  663. What does

  664. the lawyer

  665. say?

  666. The lawyer

  667. says,

  668. well,

  669. you shall

  670. love the

  671. Lord your

  672. God with

  673. all your

  674. heart,

  675. with all

  676. your soul,

  677. with all

  678. your strength,

  679. and with

  680. all your

  681. mind,

  682. and your

  683. neighbor

  684. as

  685. yourself.

  686. And,

  687. he says

  688. to him,

  689. you have

  690. answered

  691. correctly,

  692. do this

  693. and live.

  694. Jesus

  695. continues to

  696. engage

  697. this

  698. lawyer,

  699. continues to

  700. draw him

  701. out,

  702. he doesn't

  703. pounce on

  704. him,

  705. he doesn't

  706. try to

  707. correct him

  708. or attack

  709. him,

  710. but he

  711. leads him

  712. into this

  713. discussion,

  714. tries to

  715. help establish

  716. the standard

  717. of the law

  718. that exists,

  719. and tries to

  720. help him

  721. understand that

  722. he will

  723. never measure

  724. up

  725. to the

  726. expectations

  727. that God

  728. has for

  729. his life.

  730. Those who

  731. know God

  732. will be

  733. transformed

  734. in how

  735. they live.

  736. Now,

  737. Jesus

  738. is going to

  739. do the

  740. work

  741. of leading

  742. this

  743. conversation

  744. that it

  745. was meant

  746. to have.

  747. The effect

  748. now is

  749. beginning to

  750. land.

  751. As Jesus

  752. says,

  753. now do

  754. this and

  755. you will

  756. live.

  757. Now,

  758. notice in

  759. verse 29,

  760. now the

  761. force of

  762. this command

  763. is coming

  764. true in

  765. the heart

  766. and life

  767. of this

  768. lawyer.

  769. And how

  770. does he

  771. respond?

  772. He says,

  773. and he,

  774. desiring to

  775. justify himself,

  776. said to

  777. Jesus,

  778. and who

  779. is my

  780. neighbor?

  781. Who is

  782. my neighbor?

  783. He's beginning

  784. to understand

  785. how woefully

  786. short he

  787. falls to

  788. the standard

  789. of loving

  790. the people

  791. around him.

  792. The scribes

  793. and the

  794. Pharisees

  795. in particular

  796. had a

  797. challenge.

  798. It was

  799. difficult for

  800. them to

  801. even love

  802. people within

  803. their own

  804. Jewish

  805. nationality.

  806. He knows

  807. that his

  808. love is

  809. pretty exclusive

  810. when it

  811. comes to

  812. loving his

  813. neighbor.

  814. It's not

  815. nearly as

  816. extensive as

  817. perhaps he

  818. would have

  819. read in

  820. the law

  821. itself.

  822. Matter of

  823. fact,

  824. if we were

  825. to flip

  826. over a

  827. couple of

  828. chapters in

  829. Luke and

  830. go to

  831. Luke chapter

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  832. 15,

  833. we would

  834. find that

  835. this is

  836. the issue

  837. that the

  838. scribes and

  839. the Pharisees

  840. have with

  841. Jesus

  842. primarily.

  843. He mixes

  844. it up with

  845. tax collectors

  846. and sinners.

  847. Who is

  848. this kind

  849. of guy?

  850. In their

  851. minds,

  852. he was

  853. disqualified

  854. for ministry

  855. because of

  856. the company

  857. that he

  858. kept.

  859. No,

  860. their love

  861. wasn't

  862. broad like

  863. Jesus'

  864. love.

  865. They saw

  866. even in

  867. his life

  868. how their

  869. life was

  870. certainly

  871. different.

  872. In their

  873. minds,

  874. Jesus was

  875. totally

  876. disqualified

  877. because he

  878. was a

  879. friend of

  880. sinners and

  881. eats with

  882. them.

  883. How could

  884. a religious

  885. leader be

  886. involved with

  887. such a

  888. company of

  889. individuals?

  890. Well,

  891. Jesus takes

  892. this opportunity

  893. now to

  894. dig in.

  895. Jesus

  896. wants to

  897. now help

  898. to develop

  899. this important

  900. question.

  901. Now that

  902. he has

  903. the lawyer's

  904. attention,

  905. now that

  906. he has

  907. drawn him

  908. out and

  909. involved him

  910. in this

  911. dialogue,

  912. now that

  913. he has

  914. commended

  915. his expertise

  916. in the

  917. law,

  918. now that

  919. the beginnings

  920. of a

  921. relationship

  922. have taken

  923. place,

  924. and this

  925. lawyer is

  926. the one

  927. now asking

  928. the questions,

  929. now Jesus

  930. has a

  931. captive

  932. audience.

  933. And now

  934. we'll find

  935. that this

  936. question is

  937. significant

  938. because it

  939. addresses your

  940. availability.

  941. And that's

  942. point number

  943. three.

  944. It addresses

  945. your

  946. availability.

  947. Now let me

  948. read this

  949. parable for

  950. us and I'll

  951. just kind of

  952. summarize it

  953. for us and

  954. then I want

  955. to just make

  956. some observations

  957. about the

  958. kind of love

  959. that we see

  960. this good

  961. Samaritan

  962. have.

  963. Beginning in

  964. verse 30 it

  965. says,

  966. Now Jesus

  967. replied,

  968. a man was

  969. going down

  970. from Jerusalem

  971. to Jericho

  972. and he

  973. fell among

  974. robbers who

  975. stripped him

  976. and beat

  977. him and

  978. departed,

  979. leaving him

  980. half dead.

  981. Now by

  982. chance a

  983. priest was

  984. going down

  985. that road

  986. and when he

  987. saw him he

  988. passed by on

  989. the other

  990. side.

  991. So likewise

  992. a Levite

  993. when he came

  994. to the place

  995. and saw him

  996. passed by

  997. on the other

  998. side.

  999. But a

  1000. Samaritan

  1001. as he

  1002. journeyed came

  1003. to where he

  1004. was and

  1005. when he

  1006. saw him

  1007. he had

  1008. compassion.

  1009. He went

  1010. to him

  1011. and bound

  1012. up his

  1013. wounds

  1014. pouring on

  1015. oil and

  1016. wine.

  1017. Then he

  1018. set him

  1019. on his

  1020. own animal

  1021. and brought

  1022. him to an

  1023. inn and

  1024. took care

  1025. of him.

  1026. And the

  1027. next day

  1028. he took

  1029. out two

  1030. denarii

  1031. and gave

  1032. them to

  1033. the innkeeper

  1034. saying,

  1035. take care

  1036. of him

  1037. and whatever

  1038. more you

  1039. spend I

  1040. will repay

  1041. you when

  1042. I come

  1043. back.

  1044. Now we

  1045. know the

  1046. story.

  1047. We're familiar

  1048. with this

  1049. account.

  1050. Here is

  1051. this man

  1052. not a

  1053. specific man

  1054. but some

  1055. general person

  1056. who's making

  1057. a journey.

  1058. Now this

  1059. may have

  1060. really

  1061. resonated in

  1062. the heart

  1063. of this

  1064. lawyer because

  1065. it's quite

  1066. possible that

  1067. this story

  1068. was actually

  1069. given,

  1070. this answer

  1071. was actually

  1072. given in

  1073. the area

  1074. around Jericho.

  1075. Because in

  1076. the following

  1077. account as

  1078. you kind

  1079. of drop

  1080. down and

  1081. look at

  1082. Luke chapter

    Luke 10:38–42

  1083. 10 verses

  1084. 38 to

  1085. 42,

  1086. you'll

  1087. notice that

  1088. Jesus finds

  1089. himself in

  1090. Mary and

  1091. Martha's

  1092. house.

  1093. They happen

  1094. to live in

  1095. a town of

  1096. Bethany which

  1097. is only a

  1098. couple of

  1099. miles away

  1100. from Jerusalem.

  1101. And on

  1102. this trip

  1103. it says

  1104. they went

  1105. their way

  1106. in verse

  1107. 38.

  1108. Jesus

  1109. entered this

  1110. village.

  1111. So it's

  1112. quite possible

  1113. that Jesus

  1114. is actually

  1115. sharing this

  1116. story in

  1117. Jericho or

  1118. in the area

  1119. surrounding

  1120. Jericho.

  1121. So the

  1122. people who

  1123. were there

  1124. have made

  1125. that trek.

  1126. They know

  1127. how treacherous

  1128. this path

  1129. is.

  1130. It really

  1131. can resonate

  1132. with them

  1133. because they've

  1134. had that

  1135. experience.

  1136. They've

  1137. understood

  1138. the fear.

  1139. They know

  1140. how treacherous

  1141. that road

  1142. is.

  1143. They know

  1144. the dangers

  1145. that lie

  1146. along the

  1147. path.

  1148. They understand

  1149. how perilous

  1150. it can be.

  1151. Now Jericho

  1152. is about

  1153. 15 to

  1154. 17 miles

  1155. away from

  1156. Jerusalem.

  1157. It lies

  1158. about 900

  1159. feet below

  1160. sea level.

  1161. And Jerusalem

  1162. which is

  1163. about 2,600

  1164. feet above

  1165. sea level

  1166. to now go

  1167. down this

  1168. 17 mile

  1169. track to

  1170. Jericho

  1171. 900 feet

  1172. below sea

  1173. level.

  1174. That's a

  1175. pretty significant

  1176. decline.

  1177. About

  1178. 3,500

  1179. feet in

  1180. elevation.

  1181. And so

  1182. this man

  1183. would have

  1184. been zigzagging

  1185. his way

  1186. through this

  1187. mountainous

  1188. pass

  1189. fraught

  1190. with

  1191. robbers

  1192. and it

  1193. became a

  1194. rather

  1195. perilous

  1196. journey.

  1197. Well as

  1198. we find

  1199. in verse

  1200. 30

  1201. this man's

  1202. worst fears

  1203. came to

  1204. pass.

  1205. The robbers

  1206. come.

  1207. They stripped

  1208. him,

  1209. they beat

  1210. him,

  1211. they departed

  1212. from him

  1213. and they

  1214. left him

  1215. for dead.

  1216. Terrible

  1217. plight

  1218. for any

  1219. person.

  1220. A victim

  1221. of bad

  1222. circumstances.

  1223. But here

  1224. we find

  1225. in verse

  1226. 31 a ray

  1227. of hope.

  1228. He may

  1229. have been

  1230. saying to

  1231. himself as

  1232. he was

  1233. observing

  1234. this scene,

  1235. Hallelujah!

  1236. Here comes

  1237. my helper.

  1238. This priest

  1239. was making

  1240. his way

  1241. down this

  1242. road.

  1243. Certainly

  1244. the priest

  1245. would provide

  1246. some assistance.

  1247. This would

  1248. appear to have

  1249. been the best

  1250. possible news

  1251. for this

  1252. victim,

  1253. this Jewish

  1254. man.

  1255. A priest

  1256. who was

  1257. expected to

  1258. be an

  1259. example of

  1260. spiritual

  1261. virtue.

  1262. the best,

  1263. the godliest,

  1264. and the

  1265. most righteous

  1266. man in

  1267. Jerusalem

  1268. and perhaps

  1269. in all

  1270. of Israel

  1271. at large.

  1272. If anyone

  1273. was moving

  1274. in the

  1275. direction of

  1276. the kingdom,

  1277. if anyone

  1278. was following

  1279. after the

  1280. standard that

  1281. God has

  1282. set,

  1283. certainly

  1284. it would

  1285. be a

  1286. priest.

  1287. Now at

  1288. this moment

  1289. I want to

  1290. just remind

  1291. us what

  1292. initiated this

  1293. parable to

  1294. begin with.

  1295. What shall

  1296. I do to

  1297. inherit

  1298. eternal

  1299. life?

  1300. For this

  1301. man,

  1302. for this

  1303. lawyer,

  1304. and anyone

  1305. who is

  1306. listening to

  1307. this story,

  1308. the priest

  1309. would be

  1310. at the

  1311. top of

  1312. the list

  1313. of

  1314. individuals

  1315. who were

  1316. certainly

  1317. headed to

  1318. the kingdom.

  1319. And yet

  1320. in this

  1321. story we

  1322. find the

  1323. priest is

  1324. the one

  1325. who is

  1326. avoiding the

  1327. very things

  1328. that God

  1329. has said

  1330. in terms

  1331. of general

  1332. and comprehensive

  1333. statements about

  1334. how to

  1335. emulate

  1336. God's

  1337. heart.

  1338. He was

  1339. not one

  1340. who would

  1341. love his

  1342. neighbor as

  1343. himself.

  1344. Yet for

  1345. all that he

  1346. knew about

  1347. the law's

  1348. demands,

  1349. he decided

  1350. that he

  1351. wasn't going

  1352. to take

  1353. the risk,

  1354. he was

  1355. going to

  1356. pass by

  1357. on the

  1358. other side.

  1359. Verse 32,

  1360. we find another

  1361. ray of

  1362. hope.

  1363. How did

  1364. this guy

  1365. get so

  1366. lucky?

  1367. Not only

  1368. does a

  1369. priest come

  1370. by,

  1371. but now a

  1372. Levite.

  1373. Fortunately

  1374. for this

  1375. desperate man,

  1376. another

  1377. traveler appears

  1378. on this

  1379. road,

  1380. a Levite

  1381. who would

  1382. have

  1383. assisted

  1384. the

  1385. priest,

  1386. who would

  1387. have been

  1388. exposed to

  1389. the law,

  1390. who would

  1391. have been

  1392. understanding

  1393. all that God

  1394. had said in

  1395. terms of his

  1396. expectations for

  1397. his people.

  1398. He would

  1399. have been on

  1400. the second

  1401. tier of this

  1402. list of

  1403. individuals who

  1404. were moving

  1405. into the

  1406. kingdom,

  1407. at least as

  1408. far as the

  1409. society would

  1410. have thought.

  1411. And yet,

  1412. for all that

  1413. he knew about

  1414. the law,

  1415. he too

  1416. passed by

  1417. on the

  1418. other side.

  1419. Two men

  1420. from the

  1421. spiritual class

  1422. of Israel,

  1423. the best

  1424. chance of

  1425. this wounded

  1426. victim,

  1427. both ignore

  1428. the opportunity

  1429. to show God's

  1430. love to this

  1431. individual who

  1432. is hurting.

  1433. Certainly,

  1434. his chances

  1435. are exhausted

  1436. at this point.

  1437. certainly,

  1438. the doom of

  1439. his future

  1440. has been

  1441. written in

  1442. the books.

  1443. And now,

  1444. comes a

  1445. Samaritan,

  1446. in verse

  1447. 33.

  1448. But,

  1449. a Samaritan,

  1450. as he

  1451. journeyed,

  1452. came to

  1453. where he

  1454. was.

  1455. Unclean

  1456. from a

  1457. Jewish

  1458. perspective.

  1459. If this

  1460. man had

  1461. been in

  1462. good health,

  1463. he probably

  1464. would have

  1465. avoided it,

  1466. this Samaritan

  1467. himself.

  1468. coming from

  1469. a mixed

  1470. race because

  1471. they had

  1472. intermarried

  1473. with the

  1474. Gentiles.

  1475. So,

  1476. they were

  1477. pushed out

  1478. of the

  1479. covenant

  1480. community

  1481. and despised

  1482. by the

  1483. Jewish

  1484. people.

  1485. But,

  1486. this one,

  1487. moved with

  1488. compassion,

  1489. gets personally

  1490. involved.

  1491. He binds

  1492. his wounds,

  1493. he pours

  1494. on oil.

  1495. He wasn't

  1496. just interested

  1497. in moving

  1498. this man

  1499. out of the

  1500. way so

  1501. that other

  1502. travelers

  1503. would not

  1504. have the

  1505. burden or

  1506. the hurdle

  1507. of this

  1508. individual

  1509. lying in

  1510. the path.

  1511. he takes

  1512. ownership

  1513. of the

  1514. problem

  1515. and he

  1516. seeks to

  1517. address

  1518. the issue.

  1519. In

  1520. Jesus'

  1521. story,

  1522. as he

  1523. does so

  1524. well,

  1525. Jesus

  1526. turns

  1527. everything

  1528. upside down.

  1529. Jesus

  1530. has a

  1531. way of

  1532. reversing

  1533. all of

  1534. the

  1535. expectations,

  1536. this

  1537. surprise

  1538. ending.

  1539. Who

  1540. will be

  1541. the

  1542. hero?

  1543. Well,

  1544. the

  1545. villain of

  1546. the story

  1547. is actually

  1548. the hero

  1549. of the

  1550. story.

  1551. this

  1552. Samaritan

  1553. rises to

  1554. the top

  1555. as the

  1556. individual

  1557. who will

  1558. demonstrate

  1559. the love

  1560. of God

  1561. as God

  1562. expects.

  1563. So,

  1564. what does

  1565. this say

  1566. about our

  1567. love?

  1568. And what

  1569. does this

  1570. say about

  1571. our

  1572. neighboring?

  1573. Well,

  1574. let me

  1575. make some

  1576. four quick

  1577. observations.

  1578. First,

  1579. I want us

  1580. to see

  1581. that this

  1582. is a

  1583. simple

  1584. love.

  1585. It's a

  1586. simple

  1587. love.

  1588. Well,

  1589. when I

  1590. say simple,

  1591. I don't

  1592. mean that

  1593. it's simple

  1594. to do.

  1595. It's very

  1596. difficult to

  1597. do,

  1598. but it's

  1599. simple to

  1600. understand.

  1601. It's

  1602. straightforward

  1603. in its

  1604. approach.

  1605. It's

  1606. not very

  1607. complicated

  1608. or difficult

  1609. to realize

  1610. what's going

  1611. on in this

  1612. narrative.

  1613. It's easy

  1614. for us

  1615. to get

  1616. what this

  1617. Samaritan

  1618. is about,

  1619. and it's

  1620. really simple

  1621. for us

  1622. to understand.

  1623. It didn't

  1624. require somebody

  1625. who was flashy,

  1626. who came

  1627. from some

  1628. formal education.

  1629. He wasn't

  1630. a part of

  1631. the doctrinal

  1632. studies in

  1633. Jerusalem.

  1634. He wasn't

  1635. a scholar

  1636. by any

  1637. right.

  1638. He didn't

  1639. come from

  1640. a prestigious

  1641. background or

  1642. reputation.

  1643. He wasn't

  1644. even qualified

  1645. as it related

  1646. to his

  1647. ability to

  1648. care for

  1649. the real

  1650. physical needs

  1651. of this

  1652. individual.

  1653. For all we

  1654. know,

  1655. he didn't

  1656. go through

  1657. EMT training.

  1658. wasn't a

  1659. medic,

  1660. but he

  1661. was available.

  1662. He was

  1663. somebody who

  1664. was willing

  1665. to see the

  1666. need,

  1667. to recognize

  1668. that God

  1669. had sovereignly

  1670. and providentially

  1671. placed this

  1672. individual before

  1673. him,

  1674. and because of

  1675. availability,

  1676. he was willing

  1677. to act.

  1678. Interestingly

  1679. to me,

  1680. this is

  1681. somebody that

  1682. he hadn't

  1683. even met

  1684. before.

  1685. Wasn't part

  1686. of his

  1687. nationality,

  1688. was out

  1689. of the

  1690. realm

  1691. of his

  1692. own space,

  1693. and yet

  1694. he was

  1695. willing to

  1696. act.

  1697. So,

  1698. this is a

  1699. simple love.

  1700. We understand

  1701. what this

  1702. means.

  1703. The love

  1704. of the

  1705. Samaritan

  1706. was simple

  1707. in its

  1708. approach.

  1709. He saw

  1710. the need,

  1711. he met

  1712. the need

  1713. with the

  1714. resources

  1715. that he

  1716. had.

  1717. Nothing

  1718. complex

  1719. about the

  1720. problem,

  1721. nothing

  1722. difficult to

  1723. understand

  1724. about the

  1725. situation.

  1726. All it

  1727. took was

  1728. a willingness

  1729. to step

  1730. in and

  1731. to provide

  1732. the assistance

  1733. that he

  1734. could.

  1735. It was a

  1736. simple love,

  1737. but it was

  1738. also a

  1739. serving

  1740. love.

  1741. It was a

  1742. serving

  1743. love.

  1744. It didn't

  1745. require vast

  1746. knowledge of

  1747. the law.

  1748. It didn't

  1749. require an

  1750. ability to

  1751. answer the

  1752. deep questions

  1753. of doctrine.

  1754. You didn't

  1755. have to have

  1756. all the

  1757. answers.

  1758. You didn't

  1759. have to know

  1760. how to

  1761. parse out

  1762. the Old

  1763. Testament.

  1764. All he

  1765. had to

  1766. know was

  1767. how to

  1768. serve.

  1769. And in

  1770. this posture

  1771. of service,

  1772. he was

  1773. emulating

  1774. the Savior.

  1775. Jesus,

  1776. who we

  1777. know,

  1778. came not

  1779. to be

  1780. served,

  1781. but to

  1782. serve and

  1783. to give

  1784. his life

  1785. a ransom

  1786. for many.

  1787. And a

  1788. quick look

  1789. at Jesus'

  1790. life will

  1791. bear out

  1792. the legacy

  1793. of a

  1794. man,

  1795. our Savior,

  1796. who had

  1797. the

  1798. approach

  1799. of

  1800. serving

  1801. individuals.

  1802. Meeting

  1803. needs,

  1804. physical

  1805. needs

  1806. by the

  1807. feeding

  1808. of the

  1809. 5,000.

  1810. Delivering

  1811. individuals

  1812. from the

  1813. bondage of

  1814. their health

  1815. issues and

  1816. casting out

  1817. demons and

  1818. helping to

  1819. heal those

  1820. who were

  1821. sick.

  1822. Even in

  1823. the wedding

  1824. of Cana,

  1825. he was

  1826. willing to

  1827. meet a

  1828. physical

  1829. need.

  1830. They were

  1831. running out

  1832. of refreshments

  1833. and Jesus

  1834. steps in

  1835. to help.

  1836. This is

  1837. something that

  1838. we can

  1839. all do.

  1840. If you

  1841. can pick

  1842. up a

  1843. shovel and

  1844. shovel your

  1845. walk,

  1846. if you

  1847. can pick

  1848. up a

  1849. rake and

  1850. rake your

  1851. leaves,

  1852. if you

  1853. can make

  1854. a meal,

  1855. if you

  1856. can make

  1857. a phone

  1858. call or

  1859. deliver a

  1860. text,

  1861. if you

  1862. can fix

  1863. a car,

  1864. whatever

  1865. you can

  1866. do is

  1867. a way

  1868. for you

  1869. to love

  1870. the person

  1871. across the

  1872. street.

  1873. Can you

  1874. do that?

  1875. Can you

  1876. do that

  1877. for yourself?

  1878. You find

  1879. that your

  1880. walk is

  1881. cleaned off

  1882. after a

  1883. snowstorm?

  1884. You find

  1885. that your

  1886. driveway is

  1887. salted because

  1888. you've gone

  1889. through the

  1890. effort of

  1891. making sure

  1892. that those

  1893. things are

  1894. taken care

  1895. of?

  1896. Well,

  1897. if you

  1898. can love

  1899. yourself in

  1900. those ways,

  1901. then God

  1902. is calling

  1903. us to

  1904. love our

  1905. neighbor in

  1906. the same

  1907. way that

  1908. we have

  1909. chosen to

  1910. love

  1911. ourself.

  1912. That is

  1913. the concept

  1914. here.

  1915. Can we

  1916. do this?

  1917. It's a

  1918. serving love.

  1919. Next,

  1920. it's a

  1921. selfless

  1922. love,

  1923. a selfless

  1924. love.

  1925. There's no

  1926. surprise here

  1927. that this

  1928. man took

  1929. some risks.

  1930. Perhaps

  1931. the robbers

  1932. were still

  1933. lingering in

  1934. the rocks

  1935. and he

  1936. was willing

  1937. to accept

  1938. the risk,

  1939. the danger,

  1940. so that he

  1941. could address

  1942. this man's

  1943. situation.

  1944. He put

  1945. himself in

  1946. harm's way.

  1947. He was

  1948. willing to

  1949. serve regardless

  1950. of the

  1951. potential for

  1952. injury.

  1953. And notice

  1954. he uses his

  1955. own resources.

  1956. We find

  1957. that here.

  1958. It says in

  1959. verse 34,

  1960. he binds

  1961. up his

  1962. wounds.

  1963. He pours

  1964. on oil.

  1965. He sets

  1966. him on his

  1967. own animal.

  1968. He brings

  1969. him to an

  1970. inn.

  1971. He uses

  1972. his own

  1973. money.

  1974. He

  1975. exhausts a

  1976. measure of

  1977. his own

  1978. time.

  1979. He's willing

  1980. to step

  1981. in and to

  1982. use his

  1983. resources that

  1984. are available

  1985. to him

  1986. to love

  1987. this man

  1988. who is in

  1989. need.

  1990. What often

  1991. stands in

  1992. our way,

  1993. I'll

  1994. personalize

  1995. this,

  1996. what often

  1997. stands in

  1998. my way

  1999. of serving

  2000. the people

  2001. around me

  2002. is my

  2003. own agenda.

  2004. What often

  2005. stands in

  2006. my way

  2007. is my

  2008. schedule,

  2009. my priorities,

  2010. my checklist,

  2011. my, the

  2012. things that

  2013. I think are

  2014. so important

  2015. to do,

  2016. so often

  2017. get in the

  2018. way of

  2019. serving the

  2020. individuals who

  2021. God providentially

  2022. places in my

  2023. path.

  2024. Those

  2025. intersection

  2026. points that

  2027. God does

  2028. by design

  2029. to give us

  2030. opportunities to

  2031. love the

  2032. people who

  2033. are in the

  2034. world.

  2035. Will we

  2036. be willing

  2037. to set

  2038. aside for

  2039. a little

  2040. bit our

  2041. schedules so

  2042. that we can

  2043. meet the

  2044. higher objectives?

  2045. It's really

  2046. surprising,

  2047. you look at

  2048. the life of

  2049. Jesus,

  2050. it never

  2051. ceases to

  2052. amaze me

  2053. that he

  2054. is never

  2055. in a hurry.

  2056. He's never

  2057. surprised by

  2058. the detour.

  2059. As a matter

  2060. of fact,

  2061. the one

  2062. time where

  2063. it says he

  2064. intended to

  2065. go somewhere

  2066. is he

  2067. intended to

  2068. go to

  2069. this one

  2070. place in

  2071. Samaria so

  2072. he could

  2073. meet this

  2074. lady at

  2075. the well.

  2076. Jesus was

  2077. willing to

  2078. be distracted.

  2079. He was

  2080. willing to

  2081. set aside

  2082. his agenda

  2083. for the

  2084. sake of

  2085. accomplishing

  2086. the greater

  2087. objectives.

  2088. The mission

  2089. of love

  2090. that God

  2091. has given

  2092. to us to

  2093. do.

  2094. And so

  2095. often the

  2096. need on the

  2097. surface

  2098. that need

  2099. that stares

  2100. us in

  2101. the face

  2102. is just

  2103. a superficial

  2104. way to

  2105. get beneath

  2106. the surface

  2107. and meet

  2108. the deeper

  2109. needs.

  2110. What are

  2111. those deeper

  2112. needs?

  2113. Someone who

  2114. cares.

  2115. Someone who

  2116. can sympathize.

  2117. Someone who

  2118. will listen.

  2119. Maybe someone

  2120. who will pray

  2121. with an

  2122. individual.

  2123. Someone who

  2124. will point

  2125. them to the

  2126. Savior.

  2127. will we

  2128. take the

  2129. opportunities

  2130. that God

  2131. gives to

  2132. us to

  2133. meet the

  2134. needs of

  2135. those around

  2136. us.

  2137. Now finally

  2138. here in

  2139. this section

  2140. it's our

  2141. Savior's

  2142. love.

  2143. It's our

  2144. Savior's

  2145. love.

  2146. Notice with

  2147. me in

  2148. verse 33

  2149. what does

  2150. it say?

  2151. It says

  2152. Now this

  2153. is an

  2154. amazing

  2155. word.

  2156. This is the

  2157. word for

  2158. pity.

  2159. And everywhere

  2160. it is used

  2161. in the New

  2162. Testament except

  2163. for the

  2164. parables that

  2165. Jesus shared

  2166. it is always

  2167. used to

  2168. describe the

  2169. attitude and

  2170. the ministry

  2171. in the life

  2172. of Jesus.

  2173. It is always

  2174. used to

  2175. characterize our

  2176. Savior.

  2177. He was one

  2178. of compassion.

  2179. And at least

  2180. 12 times in

  2181. the New

  2182. Testament Jesus

  2183. uses this

  2184. word either

  2185. to speak of

  2186. himself or

  2187. to characterize

  2188. himself in a

  2189. parable.

  2190. This is the

  2191. ministry that

  2192. God has called

  2193. us to.

  2194. It is a

  2195. ministry of

  2196. our Savior.

  2197. So that when

  2198. we show up as

  2199. people of

  2200. compassion,

  2201. guess who

  2202. gets the

  2203. credit?

  2204. He does.

  2205. It is a

  2206. beautiful ray

  2207. that points

  2208. to our

  2209. beautiful God.

  2210. That's what

  2211. 1 John says

  2212. in 1 John 4,

  2213. 7 and 8.

  2214. Beloved,

  2215. let us love

  2216. one another.

  2217. For love is

  2218. from God and

  2219. whoever loves

  2220. has been born

  2221. of God and

  2222. knows God.

  2223. Anyone who

  2224. does not love

  2225. does not know

  2226. God because

  2227. God is love.

  2228. How is our

  2229. loving?

  2230. God is

  2231. How does it

  2232. show up?

  2233. Are we people

  2234. of compassion?

  2235. Are we people

  2236. who hurt with

  2237. the people around

  2238. us?

  2239. I had an

  2240. opportunity just

  2241. yesterday evening.

  2242. Someone who

  2243. I was in

  2244. conversation with

  2245. shared with me

  2246. that a little

  2247. less than a

  2248. year ago her

  2249. son had

  2250. committed suicide.

  2251. Now, that was

  2252. kind of an

  2253. awkward moment.

  2254. What do you

  2255. do with that?

  2256. Well, I'll tell

  2257. you, the most

  2258. important thing

  2259. you can do is

  2260. show compassion.

  2261. Show sympathy.

  2262. And sometimes

  2263. you don't even

  2264. have to say any

  2265. words.

  2266. Sometimes you

  2267. just shed a

  2268. tear.

  2269. Sometimes you

  2270. just pray.

  2271. Sometimes you

  2272. say, you must

  2273. be feeling

  2274. terrible.

  2275. You sympathize

  2276. with their

  2277. situation and

  2278. you seek in

  2279. that moment to

  2280. demonstrate the

  2281. love of Christ

  2282. and His

  2283. compassion for

  2284. people.

  2285. And it can be

  2286. as simple as

  2287. that.

  2288. You don't

  2289. necessarily have

  2290. to have the

  2291. right answers.

  2292. You just have

  2293. to show the

  2294. right love.

  2295. I can do

  2296. that.

  2297. I don't always

  2298. have the right

  2299. answers.

  2300. But I can

  2301. show the

  2302. right service.

  2303. It can really

  2304. be as simple

  2305. as that.

  2306. Bearing out

  2307. the gospel in

  2308. our communities

  2309. can be as

  2310. simple as just

  2311. showing love

  2312. and service

  2313. to the people

  2314. that God

  2315. puts in

  2316. our path.

  2317. Well, that

  2318. takes us to

  2319. our final point

  2320. that we'll

  2321. close with.

  2322. This is a

  2323. question that

  2324. appeals to you

  2325. immediately.

  2326. Well, it

  2327. appeals to you

  2328. immediately for

  2329. several reasons.

  2330. One, it

  2331. appeals to you

  2332. immediately because

  2333. this is what we

  2334. are going to do

  2335. this year as a

  2336. church in terms

  2337. of a strategic

  2338. initiative in

  2339. seeking to

  2340. nurture and

  2341. develop this

  2342. area of our

  2343. ministry.

  2344. How can we

  2345. be better

  2346. people in

  2347. terms of

  2348. loving God

  2349. and loving

  2350. one another?

  2351. And by the

  2352. way, this

  2353. neighboring

  2354. concept, this

  2355. loving our

  2356. neighbor as

  2357. ourself, doesn't

  2358. just happen in

  2359. your community.

  2360. It needs to

  2361. happen here

  2362. too.

  2363. It needs to

  2364. happen with

  2365. one another.

  2366. As a matter

  2367. of fact, a

  2368. pastor alluded

  2369. to this last

  2370. week from

  2371. John chapter

    John 17 chapter mention

  2372. 17 when he

  2373. read the part

  2374. of Jesus'

  2375. prayer that

  2376. says that

  2377. they might be

  2378. one as you

  2379. and I are

  2380. one and just

  2381. as Jesus

  2382. speaking with

  2383. the Father

  2384. so that the

  2385. world might

  2386. know that you

  2387. have sent

  2388. me.

  2389. Do you

  2390. realize,

  2391. do you

  2392. realize that

  2393. the confirmation

  2394. of the gospel

  2395. shows up in

  2396. how we relate

  2397. to one

  2398. another?

  2399. Do you

  2400. realize it

  2401. doesn't do

  2402. any good for

  2403. us to have

  2404. a bunch of

  2405. guests come

  2406. and visit on

  2407. a particular

  2408. Sunday if

  2409. they're not

  2410. seeing the

  2411. power of the

  2412. gospel working

  2413. in our

  2414. community?

  2415. If they're not

  2416. seeing the

  2417. oneness that we

  2418. have with one

  2419. another?

  2420. If they're not

  2421. seeing the way

  2422. that we relate

  2423. to one another

  2424. in terms of

  2425. caring and

  2426. loving and

  2427. just enjoying

  2428. each other's

  2429. fellowship,

  2430. that is the

  2431. confirmation,

  2432. that is the

  2433. stamp of

  2434. validation that

  2435. the gospel has

  2436. actually done

  2437. its work,

  2438. is how you

  2439. and I

  2440. love each

  2441. other.

  2442. So, yes,

  2443. we do need to

  2444. be about loving

  2445. our community

  2446. and loving the

  2447. people at the

  2448. grocery store

  2449. and loving the

  2450. serviceman who

  2451. fixes your car

  2452. or whatever

  2453. it takes.

  2454. Whenever God

  2455. creates an

  2456. intersection for

  2457. your life,

  2458. learning to

  2459. love the

  2460. people that

  2461. God has put

  2462. in your

  2463. path,

  2464. that is

  2465. important.

  2466. But we also

  2467. need to learn

  2468. how to love

  2469. one another.

  2470. And there's

  2471. some opportunities

  2472. we're creating

  2473. for that.

  2474. First, we're

  2475. creating that

  2476. opportunity in

  2477. terms of small

  2478. groups.

  2479. Those of you

  2480. who are part

  2481. of a small

  2482. group, you're

  2483. going to be

  2484. spending the

  2485. next 12 to

  2486. 14 weeks,

  2487. however long

  2488. your small

  2489. group leader

  2490. wants to take,

  2491. in working

  2492. through a study

  2493. called the

  2494. art of

  2495. neighboring.

  2496. And I would

  2497. encourage you

  2498. to not only

  2499. participate in

  2500. that, but

  2501. there's a study

  2502. guide and make

  2503. the most of

  2504. this opportunity

  2505. for us to

  2506. learn what it

  2507. takes to do

  2508. this second

  2509. command, which

  2510. leads us to the

  2511. trajectory of the

  2512. kingdom, as we're

  2513. letting the word of

  2514. God transform our

  2515. hearts and make us

  2516. loving people.

2517. So we're going to be

  2518. doing this in small

  2519. groups.

  2520. We're also going to

  2521. be offering this in

  2522. Sunday school.

2523. Now, this is not my

  2524. idea.

  2525. idea.

  2526. Somebody in this

  2527. congregation had a

  2528. great idea.

  2529. What about people

2530. who are not part of

  2531. small groups?

  2532. And we certainly

  2533. want everyone who

2534. is a part of this

  2535. congregation, whether

  2536. you're a guest and

  2537. you're just trying to

  2538. check things out, or

  2539. if you're a regular

  2540. member and attender

  2541. of this church, but

2542. you're not able to be

2543. part of a small group,

2544. we want you to be part

  2545. of this process.

2546. We want you to feel

  2547. like you're connected

2548. to the rest of the

  2549. body because we're

  2550. all in this together.

2551. We all need to be

  2552. moving in the same

  2553. direction.

  2554. So beginning next

  2555. week, I'm going to

  2556. be teaching this

  2557. class.

  2558. We're going to be

  2559. going through the

  2560. same material, and

  2561. I would love to

2562. have you as a part

  2563. of that, and so

  2564. see me afterwards,

  2565. and I'll let you

  2566. know where we're

  2567. going to be meeting.

  2568. So if you're not

  2569. part of a small

  2570. group, please take

  2571. part in this Sunday

  2572. school so that we

2573. can all be on the

  2574. same page and moving

  2575. in the same direction.

  2576. Excuse me.

  2577. Now finally, we're

  2578. going to be doing

  2579. this on some

  2580. strategic holidays.

  2581. Now, it doesn't do

2582. us any good to go

  2583. send you out and

  2584. say, hey, go do

  2585. this.

  2586. This is great if

  2587. we're not behind

  2588. this as a church.

2589. So I want you to

  2590. know we're behind

  2591. this enough that we

  2592. want to help set

  2593. aside some time for

  2594. you to do this.

  2595. And I know that

  2596. life is busy, and

  2597. so we want to

  2598. designate at least

  2599. four strategic

  2600. weekends that you're

2601. going to be out with

  2602. your community,

  2603. maybe inviting them

2604. to your home for a

  2605. meal, maybe having a

  2606. barbecue, maybe going

  2607. and enjoying a

  2608. fireworks show,

  2609. whatever it takes to

  2610. engage your community,

  2611. your neighbors, in

  2612. building relationships

  2613. with them.

  2614. This art of

  2615. neighboring we want to

  2616. take seriously, and so

  2617. we're going to designate

  2618. at least four weekends

  2619. where we're going to

  2620. not have an evening

2621. service so that you can

  2622. be about ministry in

  2623. your community.

2624. We want to free up

2625. space for us to do

  2626. what God is calling

  2627. us to do.

  2628. It's our desire, our

  2629. prayer, that God will

2630. help to lead us in this

  2631. process of learning to

2632. love as he has called

2633. us to love, so that we

  2634. can emulate his heart

2635. and so that we can show

2636. his life in the world

  2637. around us.

  2638. Let's pray.

  2639. God, this is a

  2640. significant task.

  2641. We understand that this

  2642. lawyer asked the

  2643. ultimate question, a

2644. question that has as its

  2645. future destination

  2646. eternity.

2647. So God, as you are

  2648. shaping our hearts and

  2649. molding us into the

2650. image of Christ, we pray

  2651. that your Holy Spirit

2652. would show up in our

2653. lives and help us to be

  2654. people who are truly

  2655. loving our neighbor as

  2656. ourself.

2657. We need your help, not

2658. only in terms of the

  2659. enablement to do this,

2660. but the wisdom on how

  2661. to do it well.

  2662. Thank you for this

  2663. opportunity that we have

2664. this year, and we pray

  2665. that you would be

  2666. pleased with our efforts

2667. and that you would equip

  2668. us for this work.

2669. We pray in Jesus' name.

  2670. Amen.
