  1. Well, I know John puts a lot of preparation into our singing portion of the service.

  2. ! So it's not by accident we sing, we finish with a song, Jesus paid it all, all to him I owe.

  3. So, on a morning that we're going to talk about money.

  4. Yeah, you know, this is our favorite subject, I'm sure, to talk about money.

  5. And if all of you don't just walk out the back right now, I will be a very happy preacher today.

  6. You know, I feel a little inadequate, to be honest with you, in talking to you about something as significant as how to give.

  7. How to put your money to work.

  8. I feel a little inadequate because, number one, this is a church that I know does a great job at investing in eternity.

  9. Just a look at this past year is a tremendous example of how much you desire and invest in the things that really matter.

  10. If I remember correctly, I think around $46,000 that you gave to the summer youth missions trip.

  11. And in the last month of our time last year, I think there was almost $100,000 that you gave as a church

  12. in contributing to the ministry here and to the ongoing work of the kingdom.

  13. And so, in a lot of respects, I should be the one sitting in the pew.

  14. And many of you should be the ones who are here sharing the significance of how to make much of your money.

  15. I think there's also a bit of an adequacy in my own life, just knowing how much I need,

  16. how much more room there is in my own life to grow in this area.

  17. So, I would encourage us, this morning as we come to the Word of God, the Word of God is the standard.

  18. God has set the principles for us.

  19. That is the authority by which we live.

  20. And so, even though there is room in my own life to grow,

  21. and you can probably teach me a lot in relationship to how to be a better kingdom giver,

  22. we can all sit underneath the authority of the Scripture,

  23. and we can all find in this passage room for us to really grow in our giving to God.

  24. But before we do that, let's go to the Word, the Lord in prayer,

  25. and ask for His help in this very important subject.

  26. God, we praise You this morning that You paid it all.

  27. And because You paid it all, all to You we owe.

  28. And as we sang earlier, my hope is built on nothing less but Jesus' blood and righteousness.

  29. There is security in You.

  30. There is hope in You.

  31. There is certainty in You.

  32. There is confidence for life.

  33. There is the knowledge that You will provide for our needs.

  34. And even though at times we feel overcome by our circumstances,

  35. even though at times we feel overwhelmed by the pressures of this life,

  36. especially as it relates to finances,

  37. God, we know that we can rest in the fact, the promise that You are in control,

  38. that we can trust You with all of our resources,

  39. and that You will help us to be more like Christ.

  40. On Him is the solid rock in which we stand.

  41. All other ground is sinking sand.

  42. And so it is not this morning that we are putting our hope in Christ and in finances,

  43. but that as an expression of our life, our desire, God, is to put our hope in You alone.

  44. So help us this morning as we look at this passage to see the significance of anchoring our hope in the solid rock.

  45. May we grow in this area.

  46. May we shine in this world because they see that our hope is distinctive,

  47. that our hope is in Christ.

  48. May it be attractive.

  49. May it be compelling.

  50. We pray in Jesus' name.

  51. Amen.

  52. This is something that you have heard year after year.

  53. This is a series of messages that the pastor has consistently brought to you

  54. in relationship to how can we be better stewards of God's money.

  55. So I really have nothing extra to bring to the table that you haven't already heard.

  56. I just hope that through our time together this morning,

  57. what I can do is just remind us of those simple, basic principles,

  58. the things that God has told us in His Word so that we can be more like Christ,

  59. be reminded of the standard and grow in this area of generosity and kingdom building.

  60. Of course, we know that Jesus had much to say about this significant topic.

  61. Although the crowds that came to hear Him speak were sprinkled with those who were rich

  62. and those who were poor and everything in between,

  63. we find even at the outset of Jesus' ministry,

  64. this is something that He came to correct.

  65. This is an understanding that He desired to help bring some clarity to,

  66. even at the very beginning, the outset of ministry.

  67. He's coming to a group of individuals in that ancient Middle East period of time

  68. that believed that money was an indication that God was actually blessing an individual.

  69. And so Jesus had to shatter that understanding.

  70. He had to help them understand that whether you had money or didn't have money,

  71. that God's favor could be on a life regardless of the economic status of an individual.

  72. And as a matter of fact, those who seemed to be most favored by God

  73. because they had the most in the bank account

  74. were actually those who were furthest away from the kingdom.

  75. He wanted to help correct their understanding of this important principle of money.

  76. The very beginning of ministry on the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  77. familiar passage to you,

  78. Jesus says,

  79. Don't be anxious.

  80. Don't be fearful.

  81. Saying,

  82. What shall we eat?

  83. Or,

  84. What shall we drink?

  85. Or,

  86. What shall we wear?

  87. For the Gentiles seek after these things.

  88. This is not only an important topic for us today,

  89. this is a differentiating topic.

  90. This is a distinguishing component of the Christian life.

  91. This sets you apart from the world.

  92. Where is your confidence?

  93. Where is your hope?

  94. Is your hope in your 401k,

  95. your savings account,

  96. all of those things that you are putting your confidence in for the future?

  97. Or,

  98. Is your hope in God?

  99. Is it on the solid rock upon which we stand?

  100. That all other ground is sinking sand?

  101. The world looks at money in one way,

  102. and Jesus sought to bring a different perspective.

  103. A heavenly one.

  104. What we do with our money can either enhance our testimony,

  105. increase our joy,

  106. bring delight to God,

  107. and maximize our future reward.

  108. Or,

  109. it can distract our focus from what really matters,

  110. lead to anxiety,

  111. dissatisfaction,

  112. and ineffectiveness in the Christian life.

  113. So it really raises this important question,

  114. what will we do with our money?

  115. And how can we put our money to work?

  116. Even the world understands that there are opportunities in relationship to money.

  117. Just this past week,

  118. there was an article that I read that said that eight of the world's wealthiest men

  119. are richer than three and a half billion people combined in the world.

  120. That's a staggering figure.

  121. Eight people,

  122. as this one article said,

  123. that can fit into a minivan,

  124. own more than the sum total of individuals who can fit on,

  125. let me get the figure correct.

  126. Oh,

  127. I lost it.

  128. Here we go.

  129. 50 million school buses.

  130. Think of that.

  131. Eight men

  132. that fit into one minivan

  133. have more than the sum total

  134. of all the people that can fit on 50 million school buses.

  135. That is mind-boggling.

  136. And of course,

  137. the world has their ideas

  138. of how to resolve the issue.

  139. This distribution of wealth

  140. that needs to happen.

  141. And all of these ideas

  142. that certainly the world is broken

  143. and we need to fix it somehow.

  144. And of course,

  145. Jesus has his ideas as well.

  146. And the Apostle Paul,

  147. in working through this issue,

  148. wants us to understand

  149. that having wealth is not the problem.

  150. It's what we do

  151. with the opportunities that wealth affords us.

  152. What will we do to make much

  153. of the gifts that God has entrusted to us?

  154. How can we put it to work in this world?

  155. It's a plan that involves deliberate investment,

  156. but one that has a guaranteed result.

  157. And that's what I want to look at this morning

  158. from 1 Timothy chapter 6.

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  159. So turn with me, if you would,

  160. to 1 Timothy chapter 6.

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  161. And we'll look at just these three verses.

  162. And I want us to see that in three verses,

  163. there are two commands and one promise.

  164. And as we look at this together this morning,

  165. I want us to understand

  166. that Paul is interested in helping Timothy,

  167. as a pastor to the church of Ephesus,

  168. to coach and to encourage

  169. and to command the people

  170. in relationship to this important area of life.

  171. So 1 Timothy chapter 6,

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  172. if you're a guest with us this morning,

  173. it's on page 993

  174. in the Pew Bible in front of you.

  175. 1 Timothy chapter 6,

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  176. actually beginning in verse 17.

  177. It says,

  178. As for the rich in this present age,

  179. charge them not to be haughty

  180. or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches,

  181. but on God,

  182. who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.

  183. They are to do good,

  184. to be rich in good works,

  185. to be generous and ready to share,

  186. thus storing up treasures for themselves

  187. as a good foundation for the future,

  188. so that they may take hold of that

  189. which is truly life.

  190. Paul begins encouraging Timothy

  191. with some strong language.

  192. He tells Timothy to charge

  193. the rich of the present age.

  194. We see that his encouragement to Timothy

  195. is a non-negotiable.

  196. I want you, Timothy, as a pastor,

  197. to elevate this to the area of urgency

  198. that it belongs.

  199. I want you to help the people

  200. who are rich in your church,

  201. rich in that culture,

  202. to understand the significance

  203. of the opportunities that they have

  204. and that this is a non-negotiable in life.

  205. This is not optional.

  206. This is something that is commanded

  207. by the Apostle Paul

  208. and coming from the Lord himself

  209. to us this morning.

  210. Something that we need to know.

  211. Something that will encourage

  212. and help us in relationship

  213. to using the money

  214. that God has given to us

  215. in a way that honors God

  216. and magnifies his testimony

  217. in the world.

  218. Now, Timothy, you all know,

  219. joined the Apostle Paul

  220. in ministry early on in life.

  221. There was some real suffering

  222. and persecution that took place

  223. in Timothy's hometown

  224. as Paul was there.

  225. And yet, his mother and grandmother

  226. entrusted Timothy to Paul's care.

  227. And so, Timothy was really,

  228. in a lot of ways,

  229. a real son,

  230. not just a spiritual son

  231. to the Apostle Paul,

  232. but in many ways,

  233. nurtured and encouraged

  234. and raised by the Apostle Paul himself.

  235. And here, Timothy is in

  236. the city of Ephesus

  237. helping to provide some

  238. pastoral leadership

  239. over this city.

  240. Now, this was a city

  241. that was kind of at the crossroads

  242. of the Roman Empire.

  243. This was a prominent

  244. and affluent city

  245. in many ways.

  246. And one look at the city

  247. from Acts chapter 19,

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  248. you'll get an idea

  249. of how wealthy they were.

  250. Remember that once

  251. they were converted to Christ,

  252. they had this massive bonfire

  253. of all of these books

  254. of sorcery and witchcraft

  255. that they had owned

  256. and they wanted to get rid of.

  257. Remember that?

  258. Well, it says that

  259. when they brought their books

  260. and counted the pieces

  261. of them,

  262. they found that they was worth

  263. 50,000 pieces of silver.

  264. Now, looking at commentaries,

  265. we find that one piece of silver

  266. would have been equivalent

  267. to 150 salaries for the year.

  268. And to kind of equate that

  269. to our day and age,

  270. that would have been

  271. somewhere around

  272. $7.8 million worth of books

  273. that they burned

  274. in that bonfire.

  275. So, we can understand

  276. why Paul would be talking

  277. about the rich of that age.

  278. This was an affluent community.

  279. A group of individuals

  280. who had great opportunity

  281. to use their wealth

  282. in a way that was

  283. pleasing to the Lord.

  284. This was not just

  285. a friendly suggestion.

  286. This was a command,

  287. a charge.

  288. Now, I want us to understand

  289. that this not only relates

  290. to the city of Ephesus,

  291. but this relates to you.

  292. There are three little

  293. bullet points right there,

  294. and I just want to lead you

  295. through quickly,

  296. helping you understand

  297. how this relates

  298. to our specific situation,

  299. where we live

  300. in this present day.

  301. I want to take a look

  302. at the world situation.

  303. I want to understand

  304. where we fit in this picture,

  305. and I want to see

  306. that this is relevant

  307. to us this morning.

  308. First, just a quick look

  309. at the world situation.

  310. Almost one billion people

  311. are living on just a dollar a day.

  312. Can you imagine?

  313. One billion people

  314. living on a dollar a day.

  315. Nearly half of the world's

  316. population are living

  317. on two and a half dollars a day.

  318. And 80% of the population

  319. is living on $10 a day.

  320. And in case you're thinking,

  321. well, you've got to apply

  322. the going rate of that culture

  323. and then understand

  324. how that factors in,

  325. maybe this will bring

  326. this to light for us.

  327. There are some 22,000 children

  328. who die every single day

  329. because of malnutrition.

  330. That's how far the dollar

  331. has gone.

  332. It's not feeding tummies.

  333. It's not meeting

  334. even the basic needs of life.

  335. 60% of the people

  336. around the world

  337. have no access

  338. to clean water.

  339. Even the things

  340. that we take for granted

  341. from day to day,

  342. 60% of the world

  343. doesn't even have access

  344. to clean water.

  345. So how rich are you?

  346. Well, if you're making

  347. more than $10 a day,

  348. you're richer than 80%

  349. of the world.

  350. You're in the top 20%,

  351. the upper echelon

  352. of society.

  353. And if you make a minimum wage,

  354. $8.15

  355. here in 2017,

  356. you make in one hour

  357. what most of the world

  358. doesn't even make

  359. in an entire day.

  360. If your household income,

  361. combined income,

  362. is $50,000 or more,

  363. you make five and a half times

  364. more than the typical person.

  365. And if your household income

  366. is $80,000 or more,

  367. you make eight and a half times,

  368. almost nine times more

  369. than the person

  370. who lives in this world.

  371. So is this relevant to us?

  372. You better believe it.

  373. And it's relevant

  374. not only because

  375. we are part of the puzzle here.

  376. We fit in the category

  377. of those who are wealthy.

  378. But it's relevant

  379. to any of us

  380. who have experienced

  381. a measure of anxiety

  382. thinking about the future

  383. in terms of

  384. how we're going to make it.

  385. Like if you come

  386. to the end of a month

  387. and you wonder

  388. how you're going to get by,

  389. that the pressures

  390. of finances

  391. are weighing down

  392. on your shoulders,

  393. then this passage

  394. is for you.

  395. If you have ever been

  396. disappointed

  397. by a financial investment

  398. and your heart

  399. has been in angst

  400. over the money

  401. that you have lost,

  402. well,

  403. this passage

  404. is for you.

  405. If you're wondering

  406. how to make ends meet

  407. from day to day

  408. and you're worried

  409. about how your 401k

  410. will benefit you

  411. at your retirement age,

  412. then this passage

  413. is for you.

  414. Maybe you're stressed

  415. about your current

  416. employment situation

  417. or lack thereof.

  418. If that's your situation today,

  419. then this passage

  420. is for you.

  421. So let's look

  422. at some of the obstacles.

  423. What are some of the things

  424. that get in the way

  425. of God helping us

  426. to make the most

  427. of our money?

  428. What stands in the way?

  429. And that is our first point

  430. for this morning.

  431. There are some obstacles.

  432. The obstacles

  433. to a good investment.

  434. And if you can move

  435. to the next group of slides,

  436. that would be great.

  437. Good.

  438. I think you already did that.

  439. First,

  440. I want us to see here

  441. in verse 17.

  442. It says,

  443. Charge them not

  444. to be haughty.

  445. Charge them not

  446. to be haughty.

  447. That is the first obstacle

  448. to making the most

  449. of your money.

  450. Money can make us haughty.

  451. Money can make us haughty.

  452. That's just another word

  453. for proud.

  454. Charge them

  455. not to be haughty.

  456. Paul's first concern

  457. is the unity

  458. of the church.

  459. His focus

  460. is how the church

  461. relates together

  462. and how the church

  463. represents Christ.

  464. When we use our money

  465. in the wrong way,

  466. we tarnish

  467. the reputation

  468. of God.

  469. We corrupt

  470. the beauty

  471. of the gospel

  472. in this world.

  473. Money has the potential

  474. of creating

  475. huge divisions

  476. and factions

  477. and separations

  478. within the church.

  479. This is not

  480. just a tangential issue.

  481. This is a central one.

  482. It's something

  483. that we see

  484. throughout the New Testament.

  485. We see it's something

  486. that's addressed

  487. consistently

  488. throughout

  489. the New Testament.

  490. Jesus deals with it.

  491. The church

  492. of Jerusalem

  493. deals with it.

  494. The church

  495. of Corinth

  496. is dealt

  497. with this issue.

  498. The Jerusalem Council

  499. in commissioning

  500. Paul and Barnabas

  501. to ministry

  502. makes sure,

  503. Paul,

  504. that you

  505. don't forget

  506. the poor.

  507. The writer

  508. of the Hebrews

  509. commands it.

  510. Paul commends

  511. the church

  512. of Philippi

  513. for their

  514. investment

  515. into his ministry.

  516. This is a

  517. significant issue

  518. in the church

  519. that causes

  520. incredible

  521. division

  522. or at least

  523. it can

  524. cause

  525. incredible

  526. division.

  527. Those who are proud,

  528. those who are haughty.

  529. How does that look?

  530. What form

  531. does that take?

  532. Well,

  533. any number of things.

  534. It can relate

  535. to the company

  536. that people keep.

  537. It can relate

  538. to the small groups

  539. or the little

  540. cliques

  541. that they're willing

  542. to associate with.

  543. Somebody maybe

  544. doesn't smell right.

  545. Maybe they don't

  546. talk right.

  547. Maybe they don't

  548. dress right.

  549. Maybe they don't

  550. seem to have

  551. the right education

  552. or the right

  553. etiquette.

  554. They just don't

  555. know how to do

  556. church the right

  557. way.

  558. They don't come

  559. from the right

  560. part of town.

  561. They don't seem

  562. to have the right

  563. hygiene.

  564. They certainly

  565. don't dress

  566. in the distinguished

  567. way they should

  568. be dressing

  569. when they come

  570. to church.

  571. Maybe they don't

  572. come from the

  573. most prominent

  574. job.

  575. So it's hard

  576. to make a

  577. connection with them

  578. because there

  579. doesn't seem

  580. to be any

  581. overlap or

  582. any common

  583. ground with

  584. them.

  585. And so instead

  586. of engaging

  587. them in

  588. conversation,

  589. there is

  590. distance that

  591. happens.

  592. That's natural.

  593. I understand

  594. that when it

  595. comes to

  596. comfort.

  597. But those

  598. who are

  599. interested in

  600. loving God

  601. and loving

  602. their neighbor

  603. will be those

  604. who will engage

  605. the individuals

  606. who are right

  607. around them.

  608. The Bible

  609. talks about

  610. the exclusiveness

  611. and prejudice

  612. that can happen

  613. for those

  614. who are

  615. haughty

  616. and those

  617. who are

  618. proud.

  619. James really

  620. concentrates on

  621. this in chapter

  622. two.

  623. He uses an

  624. example of a

  625. man who comes

  626. into the church

  627. with fine clothes

  628. and gold rings

  629. and then obviously

  630. this poor man

  631. who walks in

  632. and there is

  633. this distinctiveness

  634. in how they treat

  635. these two

  636. individuals.

  637. The one,

  638. he says,

  639. hey,

  640. come sit next

  641. to me.

  642. I want you to

  643. have the place

  644. of honor.

  645. You're wealthy.

  646. Let's make this

  647. connection.

  648. But then the one

  649. who is poor,

  650. he says,

  651. hey,

  652. you go stand

  653. over there.

  654. You can be in

  655. the room,

  656. but go have a

  657. seat in the

  658. corner over there

  659. or if you want

  660. to,

  661. you can sit

  662. here at my

  663. feet.

  664. Pride does

  665. a great deal

  666. of harm in

  667. the church.

  668. Church that was

  669. intended to be

  670. this beautiful

  671. picture of the

  672. unity of Christ

  673. and the unity

  674. of the people

  675. that God has

  676. connected in

  677. Christ.

  678. I wonder this

  679. morning if we

  680. need to ask

  681. ourselves this

  682. question.

  683. What ministries

  684. or activities

  685. do I avoid

  686. because it

  687. either makes me

  688. uncomfortable

  689. or takes too

  690. much work?

  691. That may be

  692. an indication

  693. that pride

  694. is something

  695. that God

  696. needs to help

  697. you overcome.

  698. Like for

  699. example,

  700. on a Saturday

  701. morning you

  702. might say,

  703. I don't really

  704. want to go to

  705. the homeless

  706. people and

  707. hand out oatmeal

  708. because it

  709. makes me feel

  710. so uncomfortable.

  711. Or maybe you

  712. would say,

  713. I don't want to

  714. serve in the

  715. nursery, that is

  716. way too much

  717. work and I

  718. might get stuck

  719. there.

  720. Just as a

  721. side note,

  722. for at least

  723. eight years

  724. when I was

  725. in high school

  726. and college,

  727. I got stuck

  728. in the fours

  729. and fives

  730. ministry.

  731. Every single

  732. Sunday for

  733. four years.

  734. Some of those

  735. kids still

  736. look to me

  737. as a significant

  738. example and

  739. mentor and

  740. help in their

  741. life.

  742. Let me tell

  743. you, it

  744. might be hard

  745. work, but

  746. it's worth

  747. it.

  748. The investment

  749. that you make

  750. in the hearts

  751. and lives of

  752. children,

  753. partnering with

  754. parents, helping

  755. to lead them

  756. along may be

  757. the very best

  758. ministry you

  759. could ever do

  760. because it will

  761. have the most

  762. traction and

  763. will have the

  764. most fruit.

  765. Think about

  766. that.

  767. But sometimes

  768. we want the

  769. upfront ministries,

  770. we want the

  771. adult ministries,

  772. we want the

  773. things that are

  774. fun and exciting

  775. and I get

  776. that.

  777. But there are

  778. times where

  779. God is asking

  780. us to overcome

  781. some of those

  782. obstacles of

  783. pride perhaps in

  784. our life to do

  785. what's difficult

  786. so that we can

  787. really magnify

  788. the testimony of

  789. Christ in this

  790. world.

  791. Or maybe

  792. greeting the

  793. guests on a

  794. Sunday morning

  795. is a little

  796. awkward for you

  797. because you may

  798. have met them

  799. a couple of

  800. weeks ago but

  801. you kind of

  802. forget their

  803. name.

  804. Oh the

  805. things that we

  806. can do to

  807. save face,

  808. to keep

  809. ourselves from

  810. embarrassment

  811. because of

  812. pride in our

  813. hearts when we

  814. could actually be

  815. useful for the

  816. Lord in

  817. significant ways.

  818. Pride is a

  819. way, it is an

  820. obstacle, it gets

  821. in the way of us

  822. being able to

  823. use money in a

  824. way that pleases

  825. the Lord.

  826. But it doesn't

  827. stop there.

  828. He talks about

  829. being haughty but

  830. here also in

  831. verse 17 he

  832. says, don't be

  833. haughty or set

  834. their hopes on

  835. the uncertainty

  836. of riches.

  837. The second

  838. obstacle is that

  839. money can

  840. misdirect our

  841. hope.

  842. And it was of

  843. the Lord that

  844. we sang, my

  845. hope is built

  846. on nothing less

  847. but Jesus'

  848. blood and

  849. righteousness.

  850. When our

  851. hope is founded

  852. in Christ alone,

  853. it sets a

  854. testimony to the

  855. world of where

  856. our confidence

  857. is.

  858. It's not Christ

  859. plus something

  860. else, it's

  861. Christ alone.

  862. And money can

  863. misdirect our

  864. hope.

  865. Biblical hope

  866. is not the

  867. possibility of

  868. wishful thinking

  869. that something

  870. might happen.

  871. Biblical hope

  872. is where do you

  873. put your

  874. confidence?

  875. Where is your

  876. security?

  877. Where have you

  878. placed your

  879. hope for the

  880. future?

  881. And there's a

  882. significance here

  883. in the grammar.

  884. The Apostle Paul

  885. uses a word that

  886. helps to describe

  887. something that has

  888. happened in the

  889. past but it has

  890. ripple effects into

  891. the future.

  892. That our hope has

  893. been placed in

  894. Christ and because

  895. it's there, it

  896. will have real

  897. and tangible

  898. results for the

  899. future of your

  900. life.

  901. In each season

  902. of life it's

  903. easy to get

  904. distracted, isn't

  905. it?

  906. The pressures of

  907. life weigh down

  908. on you, the

  909. financial burdens

  910. you experience

  911. never seem to go

  912. away.

  913. Maybe you're a

  914. college student,

  915. you're barely

  916. making ends meet,

  917. trying to pay the

  918. monthly bills,

  919. trying to put some

  920. food in your

  921. stomach and to

  922. have a couple

  923. extra bucks so

  924. that you can do

  925. some things with

  926. your friends.

  927. Or maybe you're a

  928. young married couple

  929. and now there's the

  930. burden of a new

  931. home or a new

  932. car or now

  933. purchasing all of

  934. those things that

  935. are so necessary

  936. for raising

  937. children.

  938. There are the

  939. new pressures of

  940. family and medical

  941. insurance and all

  942. of those things that

  943. are bombarding you

  944. and you say,

  945. well, I will use

  946. my money sometime

  947. in the future when

  948. I get established.

  949. That pushes you

  950. into middle age.

  951. And you have an

  952. established job, you

  953. don't have to jockey

  954. for a position

  955. anymore.

  956. But now the

  957. expenses that were

  958. smaller when your

  959. kids were little,

  960. now they begin to

  961. expand as kids are

  962. getting married, as

  963. now you're helping

  964. them purchase cars

  965. and you're helping

  966. them with various

  967. school activities or

  968. you're sending them

  969. to college.

  970. Pressures continue to

  971. weigh you down.

  972. Or perhaps you're

  973. nearing retirement and

  974. all of the investment

  975. that you have wanted

  976. to do in the past,

  977. you realize you've got

  978. some catching up to

  979. do.

  980. There are regular

  981. trips to the doctor,

  982. still helping out with

  983. the kids periodically

  984. as they have left

  985. the home, but now

  986. the financial burdens

  987. are still considerable.

  988. The stock market

  989. hasn't been as

  990. favorable to you as

  991. you had hoped.

  992. And the looming

  993. pressures of

  994. retirement age are

  995. weighing down.

  996. Perhaps you are

  997. retired.

  998. There's no more

  999. income.

  1000. What used to be

  1001. coming in month

  1002. after month is no

  1003. longer there.

  1004. The pressures of

  1005. life weigh you

  1006. down.

  1007. At each season of

  1008. life, the money

  1009. that has flowed

  1010. through your hands

  1011. seems to evaporate.

  1012. And the result of

  1013. our focus is

  1014. diverted from hope

  1015. to God, to hope

  1016. in the security of

  1017. things.

  1018. That's the danger.

  1019. That's the obstacle

  1020. that keeps us from

  1021. making much of the

  1022. money that God has

  1023. entrusted to us.

  1024. The Apostle Paul is

  1025. calling them to

  1026. something greater.

  1027. He says,

  1028. Don't put your

  1029. hope in the

  1030. uncertainty of

  1031. riches, but on

  1032. God, who richly

  1033. provides us with

  1034. everything to

  1035. enjoy.

  1036. Now, this little

  1037. phrase is packed

  1038. full of promise.

  1039. That God richly

  1040. provides.

  1041. He gives lavishly.

  1042. He gives liberally.

  1043. He gives graciously.

  1044. He gives abundantly.

  1045. All of these things

  1046. that are couched

  1047. within this term.

  1048. Do we trust the

  1049. rich provisions of

  1050. God?

  1051. Does our confidence

  1052. in Him show to

  1053. the world that He

1054. is a God who is

  1055. faithful to care for

  1056. our needs?

  1057. And not just a

  1058. little bit, but

  1059. abundantly,

  1060. overflowing.

  1061. That He cares for

  1062. our needs richly,

  1063. but He also cares

  1064. for our needs

  1065. individually.

  1066. Notice it says

  1067. that He provides

  1068. for us.

  1069. He knows your

  1070. unique situation.

  1071. He cares about

  1072. the circumstances

  1073. that you face.

  1074. He knows the

  1075. pressures before you

  1076. even ask Him for

  1077. help.

  1078. He cares about you

  1079. individually.

  1080. He doesn't just

  1081. provide us with a

  1082. few things, but He

  1083. says He provides us

  1084. with everything.

  1085. It's the word for

  1086. all.

  1087. It's all-encompassing

  1088. that God has given

  1089. all things for us

  1090. to enjoy.

  1091. He does not skimp

  1092. on His kids.

1093. We do not have a

  1094. God who just

  1095. piddles away a

  1096. little bit of His

  1097. resources for us,

  1098. but He gives us

  1099. all things for

  1100. our enjoyment.

  1101. He wants us to

  1102. delight in His

  1103. provision because He

  1104. wants us to

  1105. delight in Him.

  1106. But more than

  1107. anything, the

  1108. provision that God

  1109. has given to us

  1110. is provision through

  1111. His Son, Jesus

  1112. Christ.

  1113. Just keep your

  1114. finger here in 1

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  1115. Timothy chapter 6,

  1116. and I want just

  1117. briefly to turn with

  1118. me to Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1119. chapter 8.

1120. I want you to see

  1121. what God has given

  1122. to us through

  1123. Christ.

  1124. Familiar verse,

  1125. Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8:31

  1126. verse 31.

  1127. If you're visiting

  1128. with us, it's on

  1129. page 944.

  1130. Romans says in

  1131. verse 31 of

  1132. chapter 8,

  1133. what then shall

  1134. we say to these

  1135. things?

1136. If God is for us,

  1137. who can be against

  1138. us?

  1139. He who did not

  1140. spare, notice that

  1141. word, it's integral

  1142. here, he did not

  1143. spare his own Son,

1144. but gave him up for

  1145. us all.

  1146. How will he not

  1147. also with him

  1148. graciously give us

  1149. all things?

  1150. grace?

1151. I want you to think

  1152. about the seriousness

  1153. of our discontentment.

  1154. The seriousness of

  1155. our discontentment is

1156. to say, God may have

1157. given us the best in

  1158. Christ, but it's not

  1159. enough.

  1160. That's what we say

  1161. when we become anxious

  1162. about the things that

  1163. God has seemed to

  1164. withhold.

  1165. when he has given

  1166. us Christ, he's given

  1167. his best, he's given

1168. us his all, and he

  1169. promises to meet all

  1170. the other things.

1171. If he can give us the

  1172. supreme things in

1173. Christ, he can give us

  1174. the secondary things of

  1175. this world.

1176. But let's move to the

  1177. next part of this

  1178. passage.

  1179. In chapter, in verse

  1180. 17 of 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

1181. chapter 6, we saw the

  1182. obstacles to our

  1183. investment.

  1184. Now in verse 18, we're

  1185. going to see some

  1186. opportunities.

  1187. Some opportunities.

1188. I need to move through

1189. this a little bit more

  1190. quickly.

  1191. Here's what it says.

1192. They are to do good,

1193. to be rich in good

  1194. works, to be generous

  1195. and ready to share,

  1196. thus storing up

  1197. treasures for

  1198. themselves as a good

  1199. foundation for the

  1200. future.

  1201. There are two

  1202. commands in this

  1203. little verse that

  1204. both orient themselves

  1205. around good works.

  1206. first we can see

1207. that money can be a

  1208. means of blessing

  1209. others.

  1210. Paul almost repeats

  1211. himself in this

  1212. verse.

  1213. He wants to stress

  1214. the significance of

  1215. the goodness that we

  1216. can be about, the

  1217. opportunity that comes

1218. to us in using the

  1219. wealth that he has

  1220. distributed to us to

  1221. bless others, to do

  1222. good works for others.

  1223. Here in this first

  1224. little phrase, they

1225. are to do good, is a

  1226. compound word that is

  1227. good works.

  1228. It's the agathos

  1229. ergon.

  1230. The second here, be

1231. rich in good works, is

  1232. also good works, but

  1233. it's kalas ergon.

1234. And you might say, who

  1235. cares about these

  1236. things?

1237. Well, what I want you

1238. to see is that there

  1239. are, there's a

  1240. distinction between the

  1241. two.

  1242. The first concentrates

1243. on the goodness as it

  1244. relates to benevolence,

  1245. and blessing, and

  1246. helping, and distributing,

  1247. and meeting needs.

1248. It has as its focus the

  1249. welfare of other

  1250. people.

  1251. When you are involved

1252. in doing good works in

  1253. this way, you are

  1254. interested in enhancing

  1255. your surroundings, and

  1256. helping, and enabling

  1257. the people who are

  1258. around you.

  1259. Paul starts with this

  1260. general do good, and

1261. then he moves to the

  1262. more specific features of

  1263. this statement in the

  1264. next command.

  1265. To do good always

  1266. involves using our

  1267. wealth in a positive

  1268. way.

  1269. And here, agathos is

  1270. something that involves

  1271. benevolence and care for

  1272. the individuals around

  1273. us.

  1274. It asks this question,

1275. how can I use my money

  1276. to bless the world

  1277. around me?

1278. How can I use the

  1279. world?

1280. How can I use my money

  1281. to bless the world

  1282. around me?

  1283. Now, the church of

1284. Corinth is an example of

  1285. this kind of giving

  1286. through the exhortation

  1287. of the Apostle Paul.

1288. We find in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

1289. chapter 9 that they did

1290. give, and as a result of

1291. their giving in chapter 9,

1292. we see so many things that

  1293. trickle out of that.

1294. There was thanks that went

1295. to the church of Corinth for

  1296. their contribution.

1297. There was thanks that went

1298. to God for meeting a need.

1299. There was glory that went

1300. to the Lord for the way

1301. that He was able to settle

1302. their hearts and to help

  1303. them in crisis.

  1304. A connection was made

  1305. between two churches, and

  1306. hearts were knit together.

  1307. There was praying that

  1308. happened from the Jerusalem

1309. church to this church of

  1310. Corinth, and the testimony

1311. of the gospel was magnified

1312. in the area because of this

  1313. sacrificial and beneficial

  1314. care.

1315. money can be used as a

1316. means of blessing, but also

1317. money can be used as a

  1318. means of bearing fruit.

  1319. That's really what this

1320. second aspect of being rich

1321. in good works is all about.

  1322. It concentrates on the

  1323. intrinsic or inherent nature

1324. of the rightness of this

  1325. deed.

1326. It is an overflow or an

1327. expression of what is truly

1328. going inside of the heart.

  1329. It's a reflection of what

1330. the work that God is doing

1331. in a life by helping to

1332. bear out good works in the

  1333. world.

1334. Is there an abounding work

1335. of God in your life?

1336. It will show up in how you

1337. do good works, how you bless,

1338. and how you help the world

  1339. around you.

  1340. It is inherently right.

1341. We are told not just to hoard

1342. our money, but to give it

1343. lavishly, to be rich in this

1344. process, to emulate our Savior

1345. who was rich and for our sakes

  1346. became poor.

1347. We are, as people who have been

1348. recipients of the grace of God,

1349. to also bestow that grace on the

1350. world around us, to be rich in

  1351. good works.

  1352. In Matthew 5, 16, Jesus says

  1353. this.

  1354. He says,

1355. Let your light so shine before

1356. men that they may see your

  1357. what?

  1358. Your good works.

  1359. It's the same word.

  1360. That's the word kalas.

1361. That's the word that we find

  1362. here.

1363. How does the fruit of the

1364. Spirit show up in your life?

  1365. Is it creating righteousness?

1366. Is it creating benevolence to

  1367. the world around you?

1368. And that's really now the two

1369. components that Paul focuses on

1370. here in terms of being rich in

  1371. good works.

1372. How do we do that?

1373. Well, he gives two examples.

1374. There in verse 18, he says,

1375. Be generous and be ready to

  1376. share.

  1377. Be generous.

  1378. Be ready to share.

1379. Be liberal in your sharing.

  1380. Bountiful in your giving.

1381. Willing to contribute to the

  1382. needs around you.

1383. And this word, ready to share,

1384. is also closely connected to the

  1385. word fellowship, the word

  1386. koinonia.

1387. This really is a way for us to

1388. be connected as God's people,

1389. is when we are contributing to

  1390. needs.

1391. Maybe the sharing involves your

1392. money, but maybe it also

  1393. involves your time.

1394. That instead of spending extra

1395. time that you might do on the

1396. side to build up more income,

1397. maybe instead what you do is you

1398. use those gifts to benefit the

  1399. church.

1400. Like, maybe you know how to fix a

  1401. car.

1402. Instead of fixing a car for money,

1403. you decide, you know what, we've

1404. got some people in our church that

  1405. need their car fixed.

1406. Or maybe you know that there are

1407. individuals in the church who have

1408. issues with their home and it's

  1409. breaking down.

1410. Maybe the plumbing or electrical is

1411. going bad and you can say, listen,

  1412. I can do that.

1413. I can use my time.

1414. I can use my skills.

1415. And instead of building into me,

1416. I can build into a brother or

  1417. sister in Christ.

1418. Maybe you are really gifted in the

1419. area of cooking or baking or you are

1420. a good seamstress and you can use

1421. your gifts and your time to benefit

  1422. somebody who's in need.

1423. That's what God has called us to.

1424. But it doesn't end there.

1425. God doesn't just give us the

  1426. obstacles.

1427. He doesn't just give us the

  1428. opportunities.

1429. But he finishes here with a promise.

1430. He finishes with the outcome.

1431. What does it result in in life?

1432. What is the benefit to me?

1433. We see that here in verse 18.

1434. Thus storing up treasure for

1435. themselves as a good foundation for

1436. the future so that they may take

1437. hold of that which is truly life.

1438. I want us to see two things.

1439. I want us to see that it leads to

  1440. eternal reward in heaven.

1441. And secondly, that it leads to

  1442. eternal life with God.

1443. God has always called us to a long

  1444. view of investment.

1445. He's always called us to a long view

1446. of a future look as it relates to

  1447. everything in life.

1448. when it relates to suffering, when it

1449. relates to love, when it relates to

  1450. loving our neighbors.

1451. All of these things, including money,

1452. finds its hope in the future.

1453. This guaranteed eternal reward in

  1454. heaven.

1455. The motivation is the glory of Christ.

1456. The motivation for us is how does it

1457. show Christ in the world?

1458. And how can I take part in making

1459. much of him where I am?

1460. It's an evidence, secondly then here,

  1461. of eternal life.

1462. How does it lead to eternal life?

1463. And you might say, time out.

  1464. Wait a second.

1465. Are you telling me that we are saved

  1466. by giving?

1467. No, I'm not telling you that at all.

1468. What I am telling you though is that

1469. this is such a distinctive fruit of a

  1470. Christian.

1471. This is such a work of the Spirit

1472. that only those who are in Christ

  1473. will love this way.

1474. It's an unmistakable mark of a true

  1475. believer.

1476. It's the way they meet needs of their

  1477. Christian family.

1478. Just write down Matthew chapter 25.

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  1479. Matthew chapter 25.

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

1480. I forget where it begins.

  1481. I'll look here for a second.

  1482. Matthew chapter 25.

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  1483. Beginning at verse 31.

  1484. It says,

1485. When the Son of Man comes in His glory

1486. and all the angels with Him,

1487. He will sit on His glorious throne

1488. and before Him will be gathered

  1489. all the nations.

1490. And He will separate the people

  1491. one from the other

1492. as a shepherd separates the sheep

  1493. from the goats.

1494. And what is the standard?

  1495. You might ask.

1496. As He works through this passage,

1497. He demonstrates that those who are

  1498. involved in meeting needs,

1499. in helping those who are naked,

  1500. in clothing them,

1501. in feeding those who are hungry,

1502. in giving drink to those who are thirsty,

1503. those are the ones that will be put

1504. on the category of sheep

1505. where those who refuse to do that

  1506. will be considered goats.

1507. Jesus says here in verse 40,

1508. The King will answer them,

1509. Truly I say to you,

1510. as you did to one of these,

1511. of the least of my brothers,

1512. you did it to me.

1513. The hallmark of a Christian life

  1514. is the spiritual fruit

1515. that God will create in your life

1516. to give you a compassion

1517. for the world around you

1518. so that you can work out

1519. this loving your neighbor principle,

1520. not only in the world,

1521. but especially as it relates

1522. to people here in this church,

1523. those who are your brothers

  1524. and sisters in Christ.

  1525. How is the Spirit

1526. showing up in your life?

  1527. And just to close,

1528. you might be asking yourself,

1529. Where do I go from here?

  1530. What's the next step?

1531. What do I need to do?

1532. How do I make this process

1533. of loving God in this way

  1534. with my money,

1535. of making the most of my money?

1536. The danger at this point

1537. is to give you a number.

1538. The danger at this point

1539. is to give you a percentage

  1540. or some dollar amount

  1541. to shoot for

1542. or some number of people

1543. that you need to help.

1544. But the target is Christ.

  1545. The model, the example,

  1546. the supreme example

1547. of all things is found in Him.

  1548. He is the target.

1549. So until we measure up

  1550. to His example,

  1551. we're going to fall

  1552. woefully short

  1553. of the standard.

1554. So how can our giving

  1555. be shared

1556. by the example of the Lord?

  1557. How can your giving

  1558. demonstrate the hope

1559. that you have in heaven?

1560. How can we shift our focus

  1561. onto eternal joys

1562. so that we can magnify

  1563. our delight in God?

  1564. That is the direction

1565. that we need to go in

1566. and ask God for help

  1567. in providing wisdom

  1568. and clarity

1569. on how to do that.

  1570. unless our giving

  1571. looks like Christ

  1572. then we've got

  1573. some work to do.

  1574. Though He was rich

  1575. yet for your sake

  1576. He became poor

  1577. so that you

  1578. through His poverty

  1579. might become rich.

  1580. That is the standard.

  1581. May God help us

  1582. to measure up

  1583. to that standard

  1584. through the power

  1585. of the Spirit

  1586. working within us.

  1587. Let's pray.

  1588. Lord, we understand

  1589. the weightiness

  1590. of this subject.

  1591. We understand

  1592. the sensitivity

  1593. of this topic.

  1594. We recognize

  1595. how much room

  1596. we have to grow

  1597. in this area.

  1598. Oh God, help us

  1599. to magnify You

  1600. through our giving.

1601. help us to put aside

  1602. these obstacles

  1603. the pride

  1604. that often gets

  1605. in the way

  1606. and the hoping

  1607. in this worldly stuff

  1608. that often redirects

  1609. our attention

  1610. from things

  1611. that are truly eternal.

  1612. And help us

  1613. to see the opportunities

  1614. that are right

  1615. in front of us

  1616. the benevolence

  1617. that we can give

  1618. to those around us

1619. and how it bears out fruit

  1620. the gospel testimony

  1621. of a life

  1622. that's been changed.

  1623. Lord, help us

  1624. to be those kinds

  1625. of people

1626. so that we can show

  1627. the world

  1628. that our hope

  1629. is in heaven

1630. and not in the things

  1631. of this earth.

  1632. We pray that You

  1633. would be blessed

  1634. through the transformation

  1635. that will happen

  1636. in our lives.

1637. We pray in Jesus' name.

  1638. Amen.

  1639. As we go

  1640. and sing,

  1641. I want to just

  1642. make opportunity

  1643. for any of you

1644. who do not know Christ.

  1645. Maybe as you're listening

  1646. this morning

  1647. you say,

  1648. you know,

  1649. I'm not sure

  1650. that I'm that kind

  1651. of person.

  1652. Maybe the Spirit

  1653. isn't really living

  1654. inside of me.

  1655. We would love

  1656. to lead you

  1657. to an understanding

  1658. of who Christ is

  1659. in the gospel.

  1660. We encourage you

  1661. during this singing time

  1662. to come forward.

1663. And if you would like

  1664. to be a member

  1665. of this church,

1666. be part of this fellowship,

1667. be part of the connection

  1668. that we have

  1669. in ministering

  1670. to one another

  1671. and ministering

  1672. to the world together,

  1673. we would love

  1674. just to encourage you

  1675. to make that statement

  1676. public by coming

  1677. forward this morning.

  1678. Why don't we stand

  1679. and we sing

  1680. as we close

  1681. this last song.

1682. And I'll talk about you

1683. through this holy chat chat

  1684. guitar solo

  1685. guitar solo

  1686. guitar solo

  1687. guitar solo

  1688. guitar solo

  1689. guitar solo

  1690. guitar solo

  1691. guitar solo

1692. I think of a better way to end this service than that song.

1693. And I can't think of another truth that is so distant from me.

  1694. guitar solo
