  1. Let's pray.

  2. Our gracious Heavenly Father, this morning as we come into Your presence, we come with a

  3. of our dependency upon You, with a thankfulness that You have made Your will and Your wisdom

  4. clear in the Scriptures, and that You have given to Your children the Holy Spirit who

  5. indwells every believer and is actively at work transforming the heart and mind of the

  6. believer to be more like Christ.

  7. And this morning as we take up the matter of our faithfulness and stewardship and practical

  8. instruction from the Scriptures, we are thankful that You who abide in heaven care about this

  9. matter and are interested with the heart that we bring to this subject and interested in

  10. our faithful submission to Your authority.

  11. I ask for the enabling of the Spirit of God.

  12. I ask for the faithful prayers of the people of God.

  13. And I ask that You are the one that is exalted in what we do as we take the Scripture in hand

  14. and explain it plainly and clearly.

  15. To Christ be glory.

  16. Amen.

  17. I have to tell you that it was a distinct blessing for me to sit last week right over there and

  18. listen to Pastor Scheer, our senior pastor elect, preach his first sermon on stewardship here.

  19. I liked it.

  20. I really did.

  21. I took pleasure in listening to him handle Scriptures.

  22. I've enjoyed listening to him preach.

  23. I remember three, four years ago, Pastor Saul, who has been a gospel companion to me throughout

  24. the ministry here, or most of it, he said,

  25. Pastor, it will be very hard for a man to succeed here if you don't enjoy listening to him preach.

  26. And I don't ever intend to bother anybody with that, but I've got to tell you,

  27. I enjoyed listening to our pastor elect handle the Scriptures and preach on stewardship.

  28. By the way, I do think that that is a basic thing that a person who is a shepherd of God's people should teach on.

  29. I've got to tell you, this will probably be the last message I preach on stewardship here.

  30. The reason being is that Pastor Scheer, you don't know this, but he's already more or less,

  31. fair to say, in charge of our preaching schedule, right?

  32. Yeah.

  33. He's divided up John a lot differently than I would have done.

  34. I would have been on this subject for another three years, but we're going to get it done.

  35. He's whacking it off in mega chunks, and I am biting the bullet and trying to chew it and get it together.

  36. Next week, you'll see me preach on far more verses than I ever imagined.

  37. But when I say that it will be my last stewardship sermon, there is no sorrow in that.

  38. There's joy.

  39. Not that I have any hesitancy on preaching on the subject of stewardship.

  40. But I think it is entirely appropriate that God's people, as they pray and look to the future,

  41. anticipate God bringing Pastor Scheer to be the principal agent of the Word here in our fellowship.

  42. And I look forward with ambition to him being the one that continues to teach you lessons on the subject of your giving.

  43. And I have to tell you that knowing in advance that this will probably be my last sermon on stewardship,

  44. guess what it was like to prepare to say the last time, the last things that need to be said.

  45. Very hard.

  46. And I made it easier on myself in part by having him go first, and then he kind of coached me a little bit.

  47. And so, now don't blame him on what I say, but I do want you to understand that this has been thought through together as a collaborative effort.

  48. Now, I want you to listen because there's something here at the very beginning that's pretty important.

  49. Your stewardship is nothing other than a demonstration of what you really think about God.

  50. Let me say it slowly.

  51. Your stewardship is nothing other than a reflection of what you think about God.

  52. An illustration of that would be in 2 Samuel chapter 24, and I want you to go there just for a moment.

    2 Samuel 24 chapter mention

  53. And I'm going to kind of press the story together because it's not my primary text.

  54. But it is a proof, and listen, listen, everybody.

  55. When a pastor says something, at the heart of what he says should be a Bible truth.

  56. We agreed?

  57. I have opinions about how hot curry should be, but there's not a Bible text on that.

  58. Do you follow me?

  59. But when I stand up here and I speak as a messenger of the Lord of hosts,

  60. there should be a Bible passage that corroborates the statement.

  61. And so when I say that your giving is a reflection of what you think about God,

  62. it's fair to say, and here's a passage that informs our thinking.

  63. 2 Samuel chapter 24, we have David who numbered the people,

    2 Samuel 24 chapter mention

  64. and God gave David choice A, choice B, choice C.

  65. And the choice that he actually decided upon as a punishment for his disobedience was a plague.

  66. It came upon the nation of Israel, and after a period of time, God says, that's enough.

  67. And God said, I want David to go and offer a sacrifice at a particular place.

  68. There in verse 18,

  69. And Gad came that day to David and said to him,

  70. Go up, raise an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Arunah the Jebusite.

  71. So David went up at Gad's word as the Lord commanded.

  72. And he goes to offer a sacrifice, and when he gets there, by the way,

  73. generally when you bring a sacrifice, what did you need to bring along with the sacrifice?

  74. You needed to bring wood.

  75. If you're going to make a sacrifice, you had to have a sacrifice.

  76. You had to have wood.

  77. David goes to the threshing floor of Arunah, and when he gets there,

  78. he has neither sacrifice nor the fuel, the wood with which to make the sacrifice.

  79. And to abbreviate the story, Arunah offers to David his oxen,

  80. and he offers the implements of threshing, the wood that was used in threshing the grain.

  81. And he says, Listen, you can have it for free.

  82. David says, No, no.

  83. Look at verse 24.

  84. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing.

  85. The point that I make as we look at this passage is that what we think about God reflects in our giving.

  86. Here, David, instead of taking something someone else gave to him as a means of offering,

  87. he decided, I want, because of who I know my God to be,

  88. I want this to have an effect upon me and be a reflection of my own heart and giving.

  89. And so when we come to the matter of stewardship,

  90. one of the things that I want you to think through very carefully is this,

  91. is your giving is a reflection of what you think about God.

  92. With that said, I want you to turn to 1 Corinthians chapter 16.

    1 Corinthians 16 chapter mention

  93. 1 Corinthians chapter 16.

    1 Corinthians 16 chapter mention

  94. And as we are making our way to that,

  95. I want to tell you that stewardship is not one of those topics that kind of is high on the radar screen for a pastor.

  96. It's not like most pastors at least sit in their office rubbing their hands thinking,

  97. Wow, if there's anything, I really get cold chills about preaching about its giving.

  98. I love doing that.

  99. Actually, I like it.

  100. And I'll tell you why.

  101. Because I am interested in the spiritual well-being and growth of God's people.

  102. And if God has a hold of your heart, He also has a hold of your wallet.

  103. Does that make sense?

  104. He's got a hold of your heart.

  105. He has a hold of your wallet.

  106. And there's no shame in bringing the matter to you from the Scriptures

  107. because the Bible has a lot to say about our giving.

  108. And when we really think about our giving,

  109. I want you to understand that the way we handle money really sends a clear signal of where we are

  110. and where we take our directions from.

  111. Do you understand that point?

  112. The Word of God should be the thing that informs the behavior of the believer.

  113. And so when we look at 1 Corinthians chapter 16,

    1 Corinthians 16 chapter mention

  114. we find Paul towards the end of his letter to the church at Corinth, the first one,

  115. he has some very explicit statements about the matter of giving.

  116. Let me read just the verse 2, 1 and 2 here to you.

  117. Now concerning the collection for the saints,

  118. as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do.

  119. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside

  120. and store it up as he may prosper so that there will be no collecting when I come.

  121. Now as we look at this passage,

  122. I want you to recognize the first point I would make about the matter of biblical giving

  123. is that it is part of body life.

  124. It is part of body life.

  125. I want you to think about that just for a moment.

  126. And recognize that when you are listening to a sermon,

  127. one of the things that you should be able to determine very soon

  128. is where the authority comes in terms of the preaching.

  129. What is it relying upon to make its points?

  130. When a pastor is engaged in expositional preaching,

  131. you should be able to follow along in the Bible and figure out,

  132. oh, I see where that came from.

  133. There is the passage, and that's the way the passage instructs

  134. what is being said and frames it.

  135. So as we look at this passage, and I use it as an illustration to prove the point

  136. that that exposition of Scripture draws from the Scripture itself,

  137. you look here at the words in verse 1, it says,

  138. Now concerning the collection for the saints,

  139. as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do.

  140. Here is Paul saying something to the church in Corinth,

  141. and he says, listen, I have something to say to you about collecting for the saints.

  142. And the words that he is engaged in are applicable or are of value to the church.

  143. I wonder whether or not you think of yourself as part of a larger entity,

  144. or you just think about, well, Maranatha is a place I show up at.

  145. I mean, it doesn't make any difference where I show up at.

  146. It's just I show up.

  147. No.

  148. In the thinking of the Scriptures and in the economy of God,

  149. he puts us together into family units.

  150. How many of you know your family unit?

  151. Okay?

  152. How many shearers are there?

  153. Am I right?

  154. There are...

  155. Help me out.

  156. I lost track.

  157. There's so many.

  158. Eight of us!

  159. There we go.

  160. Okay?

  161. Actually, I happen to know that there are six Kenoyers,

  162. and there are 13 grandchildren, right?

  163. Yes!

  164. You know, it's like, they're good.

  165. We know our family unit,

  166. and we are in a lasting relationship with that family unit.

  167. Am I right or wrong?

  168. How many of you admit that there are people in your family unit that every now and then kind of are a challenge?

  169. But they're your family.

  170. We are in a family of believers in Maranatha,

  171. and being part of the body of Christ means that you're linked together into a unit that God has ordained

  172. and put together for His glory.

  173. And so I want you to recognize that here is Paul writing to the church,

  174. and he is speaking to the church as an entity, not as individuals,

  175. but he is speaking to the church as a larger gathering of people

  176. that are fit together for the significant purposes of the gospel.

  177. I want you to recognize here is Paul writing under the instruction of the Holy Spirit,

  178. and as he writes these words,

  179. they end up being authoritative to us as Bible believers.

  180. Verse, the reason behind a believer's actions should always be a passage of Scripture.

  181. Why am I doing what I'm doing?

  182. How many of you go to work on an occasion,

  183. don't feel like it's the best thing to do and the most enjoyable thing of the moment?

  184. How many of you had that happen?

  185. And you think about Walt Disney, you know, and you think about the little song,

  186. Hi-ho, hi-ho, and you're thinking, that doesn't cut it.

  187. But then you think to yourself, hold it,

  188. the Scriptures tell me that I am to be a conscientious, hard-working individual,

  189. and that the way I work should bring glory to Christ.

  190. So our behavior as a believer should really rise out of biblical truth.

  191. An illustration of that would be this.

  192. In the past, we prayed for President Obama.

  193. I prayed for him on a regular basis.

  194. Now I pray for a different president.

  195. I pray for President Trump.

  196. And I will tell you, I don't think either of the men are less deserving or less needy of their prayer,

  197. of the matter of prayer.

  198. They both equally need prayer from godly people.

  199. And it ought to be one of the things that you are engaged on in a regular basis.

  200. Why?

  201. Because the Scriptures command you to pray for those who are in authority over you.

  202. And if you have any question about it, you go to 1 Timothy 2, verse 1 and 2,

    1 Timothy 2:1

  203. or you could go to 1 Peter 2, verse 17.

    1 Peter 2:17

  204. We are to pray and to honor those that God puts over us.

  205. Another illustration of the fact that our behavior is informed or instructed by the Scripture

  206. would be that when we drive into the parking lot,

  207. how many of you have noticed that as a general rule,

  208. the parking spaces very, very close to the door are generally reserved and not taken?

  209. Does anybody know why that is?

  210. We do not have handicap signs right out here by the main entrance

  211. because once you put a handicap sign there,

  212. you permanently lock it down for that use and nobody can park in it.

  213. And when someone drives in here Monday and drives in here Tuesday,

  214. there's no need for it.

  215. But on Sunday morning, why are those parking slots open?

  216. Does anybody know?

  217. Leviticus chapter 17 says that you are to rise up and stand before the hoary head.

    Leviticus 17 chapter mention

  218. Hoary head means great.

  219. The Bible tells us that we are to give respect and honor to those who are elderly,

  220. and so near parking places are for older people.

  221. The Bible tells us that.

  222. Now, the point that I'm making here is that when we, as God's people,

  223. look for instruction on the matter of giving,

  224. it's appropriate for us to seek out counsel from the Scriptures themselves.

  225. And I say that because we live in a day and age where there are lots of voices crying out

  226. for the subject of giving,

  227. and we have a tendency not to pay attention to what the Bible actually has to say on the matter.

  228. Here.

  229. The believer's first giving should flow through the body God has linked them to.

  230. I'll say that slowly and let you think about it.

  231. The believer's first giving, I didn't say only, first giving,

  232. should flow through the body that God has linked them to.

  233. And I say this on the basis of the following passages.

  234. That's not going to be an exhaustive string of the passages,

  235. but one case would be Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  236. Does anybody know what happened in Acts chapter 5?

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  237. It was one of the early consequences to poor stewardship.

  238. Ananias and Sapphira brought their giving to the feet of the apostles,

  239. and they lied about it, and what was the consequence?

  240. They died.

  241. In Acts chapter 6, we find that there was another problem in the matter of stewardship,

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  242. and we see that the illustration that you can glean from this

  243. is that giving flowed through the church

  244. and was distributed by the leadership of the church to meet the needs.

  245. 2 Thessalonians chapter 3, verse 6 through 12,

    2 Thessalonians 3:6–12

  246. we find that the early church had developed quite a habit in the matter of benevolence,

  247. so much so that it became kind of, it became,

  248. how many of you know what I mean when I use the word entitlement?

  249. Do you know people that have kind of an entitlement mentality?

  250. Early church had problems with entitlement

  251. because people would show up for the church dinner,

  252. but they wouldn't go out to work.

  253. They wouldn't do anything constructive.

  254. And do you know what Paul said to them?

  255. Does anybody know?

  256. He said, if a man won't work, neither should he eat.

  257. And I can tell you over the years,

  258. Pastor Saul probably remember this,

  259. we on a regular basis have people who call here and say,

  260. listen, I need help with my rent,

  261. or I need help with my air conditioning,

  262. not in January, but you know,

  263. I need help, I need help, I need help.

  264. My standard statement to them is,

  265. I'm glad you called.

  266. We would be glad to help you

  267. if you show up here and work for us for four hours.

  268. We'll pay you.

  269. Guess what happens to takers for that benevolence?

  270. Does anybody want to guess?

  271. We don't have many takers,

  272. but the Bible says if a man is unwilling to work,

  273. neither should he eat.

  274. The early church was the conduit

  275. for the matter of benevolence

  276. in the early New Testament era.

  277. In 1 Timothy chapter 5, verse 3 through 16,

    1 Timothy 5:3–16

  278. we find extended teaching by the apostle

  279. on the matter of how families are to care for their own.

  280. And it is interesting when you read that passage

  281. that before the church is burdened with caring

  282. for a situation,

  283. the family should be burdened first.

  284. Everybody said what?

  285. That was one of the most enthusiastic amens

  286. I've heard in a long, long line.

  287. It just blew me away.

  288. That was a Baptist amen to be amended in heaven.

  289. Oh, well, I know.

  290. I understand.

  291. Don't go there, Tim.

  292. It's all right.

  293. Okay, so here is Paul saying to the church,

  294. hey guys, before you step in as a congregation

  295. to help in a needy situation,

  296. you need to light family members up

  297. to step into the deal.

  298. And on more than one occasion,

  299. I've had people come to me and say,

  300. Pastor, the church is not doing this

  301. and not doing that.

  302. And I, I'm really sorry to hear that.

  303. Let me get on that.

  304. What they don't know is that by the instruction

  305. of the Word of God,

  306. I'm obligated to call family members and say,

  307. you may not know this, but...

  308. And when I explain that to the individuals

  309. who are commiserating about something being done,

  310. they decide, oh, maybe we ought to help.

  311. The Bible has a lot to say about the matter of giving

  312. through the local church.

  313. 2 Corinthians 8 and 9.

  314. Philippians 4.

  315. And I could work my way through other passages

  316. where it becomes very clear

  317. that the believer's giving

  318. is to flow through the body

  319. that Christ has linked them to.

  320. I'm not saying that the local church

  321. should be the only place that I give,

  322. but it's to be the first.

  323. Let me put it this way.

  324. The local church is God's plan A.

  325. Do you understand that?

  326. I want you to fix that in your mind.

  327. The local church is God's plan A.

  328. When Jesus said,

  329. I will build my church,

  330. He was thinking of the body of believers

  331. that would form in every local place

  332. and would gather under the teaching of the Word of God

  333. and be actively ministering one to another

  334. and one to the community around them

  335. for the testimony and glory of Christ.

  336. When Luke wrote in Acts,

  337. and the Lord added daily to their number

  338. those that are being saved,

  339. that word daily to their number

  340. is talking about the local church.

  341. And in Ephesians chapter 1, verse 22 and 23,

    Ephesians 1:22

  342. and I want you to look at that passage

  343. because it is so profound.

  344. Ephesians chapter 1, verse 22 and 23.

    Ephesians 1:22

  345. In verse 22, he says this,

  346. And he put all things under his feet

  347. and gave him his head over all things to the church.

  348. Now, what is the church?

  349. Which is his body,

  350. the fullness of him who fills all in all.

  351. Listen to me.

  352. The church is significant far beyond the thinking

  353. of many people today who profess to be believers.

  354. The church is God's primary agent in this age.

  355. And one of the things that needs to be framed

  356. clearly in people's thinking

  357. is that the local church has preeminence

  358. and is significant.

  359. It's so easy today to bypass the local church completely.

  360. And the pattern shows up

  361. in all different kinds of illustrations.

  362. I'll give you a couple practical illustrations.

  363. I remember when a young man

  364. who grew up in our church here,

  365. I'll mention him.

  366. How's that?

  367. Rollin Moeller.

  368. Pastor, where is it?

  369. Pennsylvania?

  370. New Jersey?

  371. Pennsylvania?

  372. Where is it?

  373. Virginia.

  374. Thank you.

  375. Rollin called me one day,

  376. and he was just a little animated.

  377. He was fired up

  378. because he had had two missionaries,

  379. one from Awana

  380. and the other from Word of Life,

  381. who had gone out from his church

  382. to go to their training

  383. for being future missionaries.

  384. Rollin was stirred.

  385. Rollin, if you're listening to this,

  386. I'm talking about you.

  387. Okay.

  388. Hi, Rollin.

  389. He was pretty agitated.

  390. I said, what's bothering you?

  391. He says, I can't believe it.

  392. People are going to Word of Life,

  393. and they're going to Awana,

  394. and they're learning how to raise funds,

  395. and they're not at all instructed

  396. to call local churches.

  397. Did anybody know that I was a little irritated

  398. or kind of fired up?

  399. I can't understand that.

  400. Rollin was upset.

  401. He was a young man,

  402. and I said, back off.

  403. You can't fight city hall,

  404. something like that,

  405. really important, significant.

  406. Do you know why that's happening?

  407. Do you know why?

  408. It is the normal protocol

  409. for people to ask individuals

  410. rather than local churches

  411. to raise money.

  412. Of all the missionaries

  413. that I have had the privilege

  414. of working with,

  415. there's only one that stands

  416. at the other end of the fence.

  417. It's Tom Wolfe.

  418. Tom Wolfe said to me,

  419. I will not ask individuals.

  420. Only one.

  421. Do I think it's wrong

  422. to ask individuals?

  423. No.

  424. But I think it is wrong

  425. to not ask churches.

  426. Do I think it is wrong

  427. for people to go on missions trips

  428. without involving the local church

  429. in any way, shape, or form?

  430. I'm beginning to wonder

  431. if that's wrong.

  432. Why?

  433. What does it say

  434. about the local church

  435. when you don't even bring them

  436. into the circle

  437. and ask them for an endorsement?

  438. I have people going

  439. on missions trips

  440. and nobody has ever asked me

  441. as a pastor,

  442. so what is this person like?

  443. Huh?

  444. J.D. Greer

  445. says this.

  446. And by the way,

  447. J.D. Greer is not the only person

  448. I could recite on this,

  449. but here we go.

  450. J.D. Greer said,

  451. I don't believe Christians

  452. should give only

  453. to the local church,

  454. but I do believe

  455. that Christians should give first

  456. to the local church.

  457. Your local church

  458. should not be the only place you give,

  459. but it should be the first.

  460. And by the way,

  461. I'm reminded of that little passage

  462. where Paul says this in Galatians.

  463. He says,

  464. Do good to all.

  465. How many of you know

  466. the remainder of the verse?

  467. Can you help me?

  468. Particularly to those

  469. who are of the household of faith.

  470. God wants me

  471. to be a benevolent person.

  472. He wants my neighborhood

  473. to know me

  474. as a benevolent person.

  475. He wants people

  476. to enjoy the generosity

  477. of my heart.

  478. The first place

  479. that that should be experienced

  480. should be in my home.

  481. The second place

  482. should be in the body of Christ

  483. and then around the circle

  484. outside of that.

  485. Well, we look at the issue

  486. and I've got to say

  487. that I took a little more time

  488. on the matter of giving

  489. to the local church

  490. than I intended,

  491. but it's my last time.

  492. And it is far more important

  493. and if you're sitting here

  494. and your fur is going up,

  495. you ask yourself the question,

  496. What does the Bible say?

  497. Will you do that for me?

  498. What does the Bible say?

  499. You can be irritated at me

  500. because I don't have

  501. the right tone of voice

  502. or because I'm 68,

  503. but at the end of the question

  504. is this,

  505. is what does the Bible say?

  506. Okay.

  507. Now, let's come to another

  508. little thing.

  509. Your giving should be planned.

  510. It should be directed

  511. through the local church.

  512. It should be planned.

  513. And you look there

  514. at verse 2,

  515. on the first day of every week.

  516. I'm not going to belabor the point,

  517. but the issue here

  518. is that the statement

  519. on the first day of every week

  520. kind of presumes

  521. that people had a pattern of giving.

  522. How many of you do better

  523. with patterns?

  524. patterns.

  525. I mean, you know,

  526. when I feel like it,

  527. maybe.

  528. I don't know.

  529. No.

  530. I mean, I really rely heavily

  531. on patterns.

  532. In fact, I found myself

  533. kind of reviewing

  534. some of my patterns

  535. the other day.

  536. I had backed up.

  537. Do you know where

  538. I'm going with this one?

  539. I had backed up

  540. without showing

  541. adequate attention

  542. to all of my mirrors.

  543. And I came about

  544. a micro inch

  545. from hitting somebody else's car.

  546. And after that,

  547. it's like,

  548. oh,

  549. Tim,

  550. remember

  551. driver's ed?

  552. How many of you

  553. remember driver's ed?

  554. Check.

  555. First thing you do

  556. when you get in.

  557. If you want to fail

  558. your driver's ed examination,

  559. when you get into the car

  560. and the other guy

  561. belts himself in,

  562. what's the first thing

  563. you should do?

  564. Adjust your mirrors.

  565. I mean,

  566. go overboard

  567. with that thing.

  568. I mean,

  569. he thinks you're

  570. paying attention.

  571. So here I am,

  572. and I'm saying to myself

  573. a little litany.

  574. It's like,

  575. look both ways.

  576. Look.

  577. I'm at the point

  578. where I pray now.

  579. Lord,

  580. help me be careful

  581. as I drive.

  582. Okay?

  583. Routine.

  584. Plan.

  585. Have a pattern.

  586. And here we have

  587. God giving instruction

  588. to the saints.

  589. He says,

  590. at the first day

  591. of every week.

  592. Now,

  593. the implication

  594. behind that

  595. is that the people

  596. in the church

  597. of Corinth

  598. as a general rule

  599. got paid on a daily basis,

  600. but they gathered

  601. once a week

  602. in the congregation.

  603. And so when they gathered,

  604. they brought

  605. the proportion

  606. that God had blessed them with

  607. and they brought it in

  608. on a regular basis.

  609. There are some of you here

  610. that are paid

  611. every other week.

  612. There are some of you

  613. that are paid

  614. bonuses

  615. at periodic times.

  616. And as God

  617. blesses and prospers you,

  618. it's appropriate

  619. during that time frame

  620. to then respond proportionally

  621. as God has blessed you.

  622. Let me bring you

  623. to another point.

  624. Not only are we

  625. to give on a planned basis,

  626. what we're to give

  627. personally.

  628. Each of you,

  629. Paul is giving instruction

  630. that every individual

  631. in the local congregation

  632. was to give.

  633. That instruction

  634. was to all

  635. who had received

  636. something through the week.

  637. Look forward a little bit

  638. and it says here,

  639. as he has prospered.

  640. So who is expected

  641. to be a regular giver

  642. in the congregation

  643. of God's people?

  644. All those who are making

  645. some kind of income.

  646. That's who God

  647. is speaking to.

  648. You are involved

  649. in earning a living

  650. and you receive something

  651. as a result

  652. of your labor.

  653. As that award

  654. or that payment

  655. is made,

  656. a portion of that

  657. is to go back

  658. to the Lord

  659. on a regular basis.

  660. I do want you

  661. to understand

  662. that your giving

  663. is to be of your own

  664. free will

  665. and it is not

  666. to be manipulated

  667. or coerced.

  668. Your giving

  669. is personal

  670. and it is not

  671. something that is

  672. to be manipulated

  673. or coerced.

  674. I am reminded

  675. of what we read

  676. in the book of Exodus.

  677. Towards the end

  678. of the book of Exodus

  679. when the offering

  680. was taken up

  681. for building

  682. the tabernacle,

  683. it said that God

  684. wanted the giving

  685. to come from

  686. all whose hearts

  687. were made willing.

  688. I don't know

  689. what you give.

  690. I have never

  691. ever paid attention

  692. to what people

  693. in this congregation

  694. give.

  695. If you want to see

  696. Tim Knoyer

  697. get just a little

  698. irritated

  699. when he is around

  700. fellow pastors,

  701. just let that

  702. fellow pastor

  703. talk about someone

  704. in his congregation

  705. that is a faithful

  706. tither.

  707. That is like nails

  708. on the chalkboard

  709. to me.

  710. Do you follow me?

  711. Because I don't

  712. look at you

  713. in that context.

  714. You are not graded

  715. according to your stewardship.

  716. I don't know

  717. what it is.

  718. I want you to give

  719. freely.

  720. I want you to give

  721. because it is a reflection

  722. of what you think

  723. about God.

  724. End of discussion.

  725. And I will preach

  726. my heart out out here

  727. to see that you love God

  728. because I know this,

  729. when there's room

  730. in the heart,

  731. there's room in the

  732. wallet.

  733. You guys awake today?

  734. The last little word

  735. that I was hoping for

  736. was if there's room

  737. in the heart,

  738. there's room in the

  739. wallet.

  740. This thing right back

  741. here.

  742. Okay?

  743. So I'm going to

  744. preach my heart out

  745. that you are faithful

  746. in your stewardship

  747. because you love God.

  748. Now there's another

  749. thing.

  750. You're giving us

  751. to be proportionate.

  752. Proportionate.

  753. Everybody gets

  754. wrapped up in how much?

  755. Well here we go

  756. with statistics.

  757. statistics.

  758. The average person

  759. in America gives

  760. less than 4%.

  761. Okay?

  762. Very interesting

  763. little statistic

  764. and some of you

  765. are Googling me

  766. already.

  767. It doesn't bother me

  768. in the least.

  769. Those who are not

  770. overly wealthy

  771. give far more

  772. than those that are

  773. proportionally.

  774. That was not

  775. God's plan.

  776. As God

  777. prospers you

  778. the intention

  779. that God has

  780. in giving you

  781. that prosperity

  782. is not that you

  783. just up your

  784. standard of living

  785. but that you

  786. up your standard

  787. of generosity.

  788. And what Paul

  789. means when he

  790. says the statement

  791. that he makes

  792. there in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 16:2

  793. chapter 16

  794. verse 2

  795. as he may

  796. prosper

  797. the indication

  798. is this

  799. is that

  800. proportionate

  801. to your

  802. prosperity

  803. is to be

  804. the generosity

  805. of your heart.

  806. So I want

  807. to encourage you

  808. as God

  809. prospers you

  810. to grow

  811. in giving

  812. more

  813. than in

  814. spending

  815. more.

  816. Make that a

  817. point.

  818. There's some

  819. of you

  820. sitting out

  821. here this

  822. morning

  823. that are

  824. at an

  825. early stage

  826. in your

  827. life

  828. you still

  829. have those

  830. school bills

  831. hanging over

  832. your head

  833. and you're

  834. living in

  835. an apartment

  836. you're maybe

  837. even living

  838. with your

  839. parents

  840. or who

  841. knows

  842. but you're

  843. thinking to

  844. yourself

  845. oh I

  846. don't know

  847. how I'll

  848. ever be

  849. able to

  850. give more

  851. I've got to

  852. tell you

  853. the day

  854. will come

  855. you conscientiously

  856. serve God

  857. in the place

  858. that he has

  859. put you

  860. he's going

  861. to prosper

  862. you

  863. he's going

  864. to bring

  865. you up

  866. and as

  867. he

  868. prospers

  869. you

  870. the thing

  871. that should

  872. increase

  873. is your

  874. proportion

  875. of giving

  876. let me

  877. say one

  878. other thing

  879. people ask

  880. me about

  881. tithing

  882. and

  883. and I've

  884. got to

  885. tell you

  886. that tithing

  887. predates

  888. the Old

  889. Testament

  890. law

  891. Abraham

  892. tithed

  893. I think

  894. in the New

  895. Testament

  896. the standard

  897. exceeds the

  898. matter of

  899. tithing

  900. and I am

  901. not here

  902. remember I

  903. don't pay

  904. attention to

  905. who tithes

  906. and who

  907. doesn't

  908. right

  909. but I

  910. got to

  911. tell you

  912. Judith

  913. and I

  914. will tell

  915. you without

  916. hesitation

  917. that as

  918. we have

  919. grown in

  920. the Lord

  921. our joy

  922. in giving

  923. has amplified

  924. itself

  925. we find

  926. pleasure

  927. in it

  928. does

  929. anybody

  930. wonder why

  931. I preach

  932. about giving

  933. right here

  934. in January

  935. I'll tell

  936. you why

  937. because right

  938. now is when

  939. there are

  940. people out

  941. in the

  942. lobby that

  943. are handing

  944. out what

  945. does anybody

  946. know what

  947. they're handing

  948. out

  949. pastor

  950. Saul

  951. what are

  952. you handing

  953. out

  954. pardon

  955. giving

  956. statements

  957. and the

  958. reason we

  959. hand out

  960. giving

  961. statements

  962. in January

  963. is does

  964. anybody

  965. have an

  966. idea why

  967. we do

  968. that

  969. because

  970. between

  971. now and

  972. April 15th

  973. Brian when do

  974. people have

  975. taxes that need

  976. to be done

  977. who yes

  978. and see what

  979. happens is there

  980. is this

  981. juxtaposition

  982. that's a big

  983. what it means

  984. is there's a

  985. blending of

  986. the giving

  987. statement that

  988. you get from

  989. the church

  990. with your

  991. tax statement

  992. and and we

  993. want you to

  994. have an

  995. opportunity

  996. to kind of

  997. evaluate

  998. hey how

  999. am I

  1000. doing

  1001. fair

  1002. right

  1003. nod your

  1004. heads

  1005. yes

  1006. preach it

  1007. preach it

  1008. you know

  1009. get on it

  1010. I need to be

  1011. convicted of

  1012. that

  1013. okay

  1014. one more

  1015. point I'll

  1016. let you

  1017. go

  1018. as you

  1019. look at

  1020. this passage

  1021. I want

  1022. you to

  1023. understand that

  1024. this is

  1025. prescriptive

  1026. what I mean

  1027. by that

  1028. is God

  1029. is giving

  1030. explicit

  1031. instructions

  1032. to believers

  1033. who know

  1034. him

  1035. it's for

  1036. every

  1037. believer

  1038. your

  1039. stewardship

  1040. your

  1041. faithful

  1042. giving

  1043. to the

  1044. Lord

  1045. is part

  1046. of a

  1047. normal

  1048. Christian

  1049. life

  1050. and it

  1051. is an

  1052. indicator

  1053. of where

  1054. you are

  1055. in your

  1056. journey

  1057. if you

  1058. are sitting

  1059. here this

  1060. morning and

  1061. stewardship is

  1062. something that

  1063. as you listen

  1064. to it you're

  1065. thinking can

  1066. he stop

  1067. soon

  1068. I got to

  1069. tell you it

  1070. may be that

  1071. you don't

  1072. know him

  1073. or it may

  1074. be that you've

  1075. lost your

  1076. first love

  1077. or it may

  1078. be that you

  1079. have been

  1080. sucked into

  1081. the swamp

  1082. of covetousness

  1083. and I got to

  1084. tell you it's

  1085. hard to get

  1086. out of there

  1087. without giving

  1088. but let me

  1089. say one other

  1090. thing

  1091. this passage

  1092. is only

  1093. prescriptive

  1094. for those

  1095. who are

  1096. believers

  1097. the scripture

  1098. makes no

  1099. call on the

  1100. unbeliever

  1101. to be faithful

  1102. in stewardship

  1103. and if you're

  1104. here this

  1105. morning listening

  1106. to the preaching

  1107. of the word of

  1108. God

  1109. that has to

  1110. do particularly

  1111. with the matter

  1112. of faithfulness

  1113. and giving

  1114. and you're

  1115. sitting there

  1116. and don't

  1117. know the

  1118. Lord Jesus

  1119. yet I got to

  1120. tell you the

  1121. first interest

  1122. that I have

  1123. and the first

  1124. interest that

  1125. Christ has is

  1126. not in your

  1127. wallet

  1128. his desire is

  1129. that you would

  1130. come to

  1131. recognize the

  1132. dark bankruptcy

  1133. of your own

  1134. soul and to

  1135. recognize that

  1136. the day of

  1137. accounting is

  1138. coming when you

  1139. will stand

  1140. before a

  1141. holy God

  1142. and he

  1143. will judge

  1144. you for

  1145. your sin

  1146. and because

  1147. of that fact

  1148. of judgment

  1149. coming someday

  1150. he sent

  1151. Jesus Christ

  1152. into the

  1153. world to be

  1154. your savior

  1155. I love what

  1156. it says

  1157. talk about

  1158. giving

  1159. 2nd Corinthians

  1160. it says

  1161. this

  1162. though he

  1163. were rich

  1164. yet he

  1165. was made

  1166. poor

  1167. for your

  1168. sakes

  1169. Paul takes

  1170. two chapters

  1171. in 2nd

  1172. Corinthians

  1173. to hammer

  1174. the subject

  1175. of giving

  1176. and at the

  1177. center of his

  1178. argument

  1179. is Christ

  1180. who was

  1181. willing

  1182. to die

  1183. for your

  1184. sins

  1185. he was

  1186. willing to

  1187. give it all

  1188. for you

  1189. and if

  1190. you're sitting

  1191. here this

  1192. morning and

  1193. you do not

  1194. know Christ

  1195. I gotta tell

  1196. you let

  1197. the matter

  1198. of stewardship

  1199. and giving

  1200. kind of go

  1201. away to the

  1202. side and think

  1203. about this

  1204. where do I

  1205. stand in my

  1206. relationship with

  1207. the Lord Jesus

  1208. Christ

  1209. don't walk

  1210. out of here

  1211. if you don't

  1212. know Christ

  1213. thinking that

  1214. the primary

  1215. focus of this

  1216. message and

  1217. its application

  1218. to you is the

  1219. matter of your

  1220. wallet it's your

  1221. heart Christ

  1222. Jesus came

  1223. to save you

  1224. let's pray

  1225. Father God

  1226. this morning

  1227. as we take

  1228. up this

  1229. subject of

  1230. stewardship

  1231. we are

  1232. thankful that

  1233. your word

  1234. speaks clearly

  1235. to believers

  1236. and gives

  1237. practical

  1238. instructions

  1239. and Father

  1240. we ask that

  1241. you would

  1242. help us to

  1243. be formed

  1244. in our

  1245. thinking and

  1246. to be convicted

  1247. by the

  1248. authority of

  1249. your word

  1250. and to

  1251. trust your

  1252. wisdom rather

  1253. than our

  1254. own

  1255. I pray for

  1256. those who

  1257. are in our

  1258. congregation

  1259. this morning

  1260. that are

  1261. believers that

  1262. know Christ

  1263. but the

  1264. truth of the

  1265. matter is

  1266. is their

  1267. stewardship is

  1268. frail and

  1269. undeveloped that

  1270. this morning

  1271. they would walk

  1272. out of here

  1273. saying God

  1274. you being my

  1275. helper this is

  1276. going to be

  1277. something that

  1278. changes this

  1279. year

  1280. I pray for

  1281. those that are

  1282. here that don't

  1283. know Christ

  1284. that this

  1285. morning your

  1286. spirit would

  1287. bring them to

  1288. conviction to

  1289. see the

  1290. bankruptcy of

  1291. their soul and

  1292. to recognize

  1293. there is no

  1294. salvation apart

  1295. from the Lord

  1296. Jesus

  1297. that they would

  1298. cry out and

  1299. confess their

  1300. sins and believe

  1301. in Christ alone

  1302. we ask this in

  1303. Jesus name

  1304. amen

  1305. you
