  1. I would like you to turn in your Bibles this morning to John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Jesus said to him,

  4. Have I been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip?

  5. Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

  6. How can you say, show us the Father?

  7. Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

  8. The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own authority.

  9. But the Father who dwells in me does his works.

  10. Believe in me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,

  11. or else believe on account of the works themselves.

  12. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me

  13. will also do the works that I do, and greater works than these will he do,

  14. because I am going to the Father.

  15. Whatever you ask in my name,

  16. this will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

  17. If you ask me anything in my name,

  18. I will do it.

  19. Let's pray.

  20. This morning, Father,

  21. Father, I ask this in Jesus' name,

  22. that he,

  23. who enjoys the praise of angels,

  24. and will be our great satisfaction in eternity,

  25. will be the one that is rightly seen this morning

  26. through the enabling of the Spirit of God

  27. in the lives of those who are believers,

  28. and that seeing him,

  29. the hearts and lives of those who know Christ that are here today

  30. would be formed and shaped to be more like him,

  31. to be effective witnesses and testifiers

  32. to the glory and supremacy of Christ,

  33. and that those that are here today that do not know the Lord Jesus

  34. would be drawn by your Spirit

  35. to see the darkness and the bankruptcy of their soul

  36. and be brought by grace to see that there is no hope apart from Jesus.

  37. Give me your strength

  38. that I might lift up Jesus

  39. and that he might be seen worthy, glorious, sufficient, all satisfying.

  40. Protect us from our own indifference

  41. to the glory and supremacy of Christ.

  42. Remove things that would be an impediment

  43. to our focus this morning,

  44. and we ask this in Jesus' name.

  45. Amen.

  46. Amen.

  47. I have to say that this is a sermon

  48. that probably requires more prayer than last week's.

  49. I was preaching on stewardship last week,

  50. in case anybody forgot,

  51. and I let you know that it's probably my last one here

  52. because Pastor Shearer will be preaching full bore on stewardship next year.

  53. I don't know exactly what he's going to do,

  54. but it's like someone walked by me Sunday morning

  55. after the sermon and said,

  56. hey, we heard your first one,

  57. and we heard your last one.

  58. A pretty interesting statement.

  59. I appreciate those who have stayed with me

  60. and borne the outcome over the years.

  61. But I have to tell you that this passage

  62. is one that it's full beyond imagination.

  63. And the frailty of the human mind,

  64. as you gather so much,

  65. is that I know there's a limit

  66. to how much you will endure

  67. in the next hour and a half.

  68. And so you're thinking,

  69. really?

  70. I was teasing in case you didn't know.

  71. But there's so much here, honestly,

  72. that deserves our attention this morning

  73. that I would plead with you

  74. that you will persist in being in prayer

  75. that the Spirit of God

  76. would make the Lord Jesus Christ clear

  77. and glorious in your thinking.

  78. And that is a work that we need

  79. the enabling of the Holy Spirit to attend to.

  80. Now, having said that,

  81. I want you to understand the context

  82. of John chapter 14, verse 8.

    John 14:8

  83. You remember that what has taken place

  84. beginning back actually in John chapter 13 on

    John 13 chapter mention

  85. is that Jesus has been ministering

  86. to His disciples.

  87. We had the upper room

  88. where He performed the Last Supper

  89. and invited His disciples to do this

  90. on a regular basis in the future.

  91. He spoke to Judas and His betrayal

  92. and of Judas and His betrayal.

  93. He then ministers,

  94. and what we're dealing with this morning

  95. is a portion of the ministry of Christ

  96. to His disciples.

  97. Jesus knows that He's going to die on the cross

  98. in hours.

  99. He knows that He is going to be betrayed

  100. by one of His disciples.

  101. He knows that He is going to suffer

  102. separation from the Father,

  103. which is something that in all of eternity past

  104. had never taken place,

  105. and it would be supremely significant

  106. in the life of Christ.

  107. And yet the thing that I find so stunning

  108. is that in the face of what He knew was coming,

  109. His affection and His interest

  110. is in His disciples.

  111. And what we find in John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  112. remember back there in verse 1,

  113. it says,

  114. let not your heart be troubled.

  115. How many of you can identify with being troubled?

  116. I mean, all you have to do

  117. is wake up in the morning

  118. and realize that we live in a fallen,

  119. broken world.

  120. And the biggest problems that we have

  121. really don't come to us through the media,

  122. but we look at them in the mirror

  123. on a day-to-day basis, do we not?

  124. Was it Pogo that said,

  125. we have met the enemy

  126. and He is us?

  127. I remember hearing Paul David Tripp

  128. say that the fact of the matter is

  129. is that the biggest problem I have is me.

  130. And so here we are

  131. looking at the world that we live in,

  132. recognizing the challenges in our life,

  133. and the words that Jesus spoke

  134. to His disciples

  135. are supremely significant to us

  136. when we really get our hands around

  137. just how challenging the day is.

  138. The first part,

  139. Jesus reminded the disciples,

  140. He says, listen,

  141. I want you to know how the story ends.

  142. And it's good to remind ourselves

  143. periodically of the fact

  144. that what's going on today

  145. is not the end of the story.

  146. We look forward to the day

  147. that we are going to see

  148. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  149. and as it says in the Scriptures

  150. at numerous different occasions,

  151. we'll be satisfied with that.

  152. And so not only do we find

  153. this encouragement

  154. as to how the story ends,

  155. but another thing

  156. that Jesus brings to His disciples

  157. is this very, very precious truth

  158. that in the midst of our adversity

  159. and our difficulties,

  160. the most important thing for us to do

  161. is to look on Jesus

  162. and lock our eyes in on Him.

  163. Not too long ago,

  164. I was in a room talking with an individual

  165. who is in the last days of his life.

  166. And the individual was going through

  167. some of the normal struggles

  168. that come with that,

  169. and as the individual was sharing with me

  170. some of the challenges

  171. that are being faced,

  172. I encouraged the individual,

  173. hey, say, listen,

  174. fix your eyes on Jesus

  175. because He is the one absolute certainty

  176. that you can count on

  177. that will be an encouragement

  178. and a remedy for the challenges

  179. that you are facing.

  180. It reminds me a little bit,

  181. last week Timothy Shearer

  182. came marching into church,

  183. and how many of you know

  184. that he cut his finger?

  185. Does anybody know that?

  186. A couple of you know.

  187. He took a whack at it

  188. with a hatchet

  189. and very thankfully

  190. did not do anything more

  191. than endure nine stitches

  192. from Dr. Malumba.

  193. And he'll show you this

  194. after the service.

  195. I'm positive.

  196. I'll let you know.

  197. And when I saw that,

  198. I thought,

  199. oh, poor Timothy.

  200. And it really brought back

  201. reminders of my youth.

  202. My dad was a surgeon,

  203. and so I had to show Timothy

  204. all the cuts in my hand,

  205. and I didn't pull up my pants legs,

  206. but I've got them there too.

  207. And it was kind of a fairly regular thing

  208. that my dad would stitch me up.

  209. Now, I always had to wait

  210. because there were other

  211. major surgeries going on,

  212. and just kind of putting

  213. the pieces together for Tim

  214. was no big deal.

  215. And I was like,

  216. I'd wait for Dad,

  217. and he'd come out and say,

  218. oh, yeah, okay,

  219. and then off we'd go.

  220. I remember the first couple times

  221. that my dad stitched me up,

  222. it was a very traumatic experience.

  223. Once you get experience,

  224. you know, it's no big deal.

  225. I mean, like seventh, eighth, ninth,

  226. it's like, here we go again,

  227. no problem.

  228. But the first couple times

  229. were pretty traumatic.

  230. And my dad,

  231. as he was injecting me with Novocaine,

  232. how many of you know

  233. that the doctors lie

  234. when they say this is just

  235. like a little mosquito bite?

  236. Right?

  237. Do you say that, Dr. Malumba?

  238. I just check it.

  239. Okay?

  240. The first couple times,

  241. here's what my dad said to me.

  242. He said, Tim, look at my face.

  243. Look at my face.

  244. And looking in my father's face

  245. made all the difference in the world

  246. in handling the pain.

  247. That's what we're dealing with here

  248. when Jesus is talking to his disciples,

  249. and they're struggling with the uncertainty

  250. of what is coming.

  251. they know

  252. that the one they have loved

  253. and followed for three years

  254. is on the cusp.

  255. He's told them,

  256. I'm going to be crucified.

  257. I'm going to be betrayed.

  258. I'm going to die.

  259. I'm going to rise.

  260. And all of that's kind of

  261. just blurred out

  262. in a terrifying reality

  263. of Jesus leaving.

  264. And so Philip,

  265. in the midst of that,

  266. you know what he says?

  267. Look at the passage.

  268. He says,

  269. Hey, listen.

  270. Lord,

  271. show us the Father

  272. and it's enough for us.

  273. Now we like to think

  274. that Philip's request

  275. is really pretty spiritual.

  276. And it is on some aspects,

  277. but I want you to follow with me

  278. as Jesus gives his answer.

  279. And what we're going to find

  280. in this passage

  281. is that Jesus is our full satisfaction.

  282. Jesus really is the only one

  283. who can completely satisfy

  284. the longing of your soul

  285. and deal with the heartache

  286. and challenges

  287. and adversity that you face.

  288. Everything else is not sufficient.

  289. And so as you look at this moment

  290. and we hear Philip say,

  291. Show us the Father.

  292. I want you to understand

  293. that Philip's request,

  294. for one,

  295. was actually understandable.

  296. It really was.

  297. And it was understandable

  298. for several good reasons.

  299. For one,

  300. Philip was kind of asking

  301. a question

  302. that other individuals

  303. have asked in the Scriptures.

  304. You remember

  305. when Moses had been given

  306. the responsibility

  307. of taking the nation of Israel,

  308. that little ragged band

  309. of grumpy people

  310. on a long trip.

  311. How many of you parents

  312. have been a little frustrated

  313. with the fact

  314. that you've pulled out

  315. of the driveway

  316. and somebody in the back

  317. of the car says,

  318. Are we there yet?

  319. And after you have invited

  320. everybody to go

  321. winky tinky,

  322. you're down the road

  323. about 10, 15 miles

  324. and somebody says,

  325. I have to go.

  326. Just so you know,

  327. I explained to my children

  328. if they had to go,

  329. we would pull over

  330. on the side of the road

  331. immediately.

  332. My boys thought

  333. that was okay.

  334. My girls didn't.

  335. But I want you

  336. to understand,

  337. here is Moses

  338. leading the nation of Israel

  339. into the promised land

  340. and this group of people

  341. were wearing him out.

  342. And Moses says,

  343. Well, listen,

  344. show me your glory.

  345. I need to see you.

  346. I need to see you.

  347. And if you were to turn,

  348. and I'm not going to ask

  349. that you do it this morning,

  350. but if you were to turn over

  351. to Exodus chapter 33,

    Exodus 33:18

  352. verse 18,

  353. you'll find that

  354. God showed himself

  355. to Moses

  356. and it was

  357. an encouragement to him.

  358. For another thing,

  359. you'll remember

  360. that Job speaks.

  361. He said,

  362. I shall be satisfied

  363. when I awake

  364. with thy,

  365. what?

  366. Thy likeness.

  367. And we know

  368. that the desire

  369. of the heart of man

  370. is to see that

  371. which is supremely satisfying

  372. and supremely beautiful

  373. and that is

  374. God the Father.

  375. And so,

  376. as we look at this,

  377. we find Philip

  378. asking a logical thing,

  379. but I want you to know

  380. another thing is

  381. that Philip's request

  382. was actually

  383. a great testimony of faith.

  384. Here he was,

  385. faced with adversity

  386. and difficulty,

  387. and he was saying,

  388. listen, I understand

  389. what we're going

  390. to go through.

  391. I mean, at least I hear

  392. you saying the words

  393. and all I need,

  394. just let me see God.

  395. We've all been there

  396. at some point in our life

  397. where the incredible

  398. challenges of the moment,

  399. the heartache,

  400. the loss

  401. that we've been enduring,

  402. a grief with a child

  403. or a marriage

  404. or whatever,

  405. where we just cry out

  406. and say,

  407. Lord, I need to see you.

  408. But at the same time,

  409. I want you to understand

  410. that Philip's question

  411. showed that he really

  412. didn't appreciate

  413. the facts that he had

  414. at hand.

  415. I want you to hold on

  416. to that just for a second.

  417. Philip didn't appreciate

  418. the facts that he had

  419. at hand.

  420. Everybody look up

  421. so I know you understand

  422. what I'm going to say next.

  423. Very seldom do I,

  424. in counseling,

  425. ever tell people

  426. something brand new.

  427. at least in our fellowship

  428. and most of the time,

  429. I'm bringing back

  430. into view

  431. and into their thinking

  432. things that they have heard

  433. and seen

  434. and understood before

  435. and forgotten.

  436. So here is Philip saying,

  437. show us the Father

  438. and the fact of the matter is

  439. is that he'd been there

  440. when Peter had confessed.

  441. Remember,

  442. Peter,

  443. who do men say that I am?

  444. Who do you say that I am?

  445. Thou art the Christ,

  446. the Son of the living God.

  447. Philip had been in the boat

  448. when they had been terrified

  449. in the storm.

  450. And then Jesus awakened

  451. and he quieted it

  452. with a word.

  453. And do you know

  454. what the scripture says,

  455. both in Mark and Luke?

  456. It says,

  457. they were afraid before,

  458. but now with the recognition

  459. of the supremacy

  460. of the one in the boat,

  461. they were terrified.

  462. Philip had seen Jesus

  463. cast out demons.

  464. He'd seen Jesus

  465. heal all sorts of sicknesses.

  466. He'd seen Jesus

  467. raise the dead.

  468. He had been there

  469. to hear Jesus preach and teach.

  470. And he had made connection

  471. again and again

  472. with the fact of

  473. Christ's supremacy

  474. and authority

  475. and grasp of the Old Testament

  476. and the fact that

  477. he was the Messiah.

  478. And yet on the moment,

  479. under the adversity

  480. of the hour,

  481. Philip laid that aside

  482. and he became

  483. very anxious

  484. and troubled.

  485. And the fact of the matter

  486. is,

  487. is that when you really

  488. come down to it,

  489. we've all been

  490. in the same place

  491. that Philip was.

  492. Isn't that right?

  493. We've taken our eyes

  494. off of Christ

  495. just like Peter did

  496. when he went down

  497. and we've forgotten

  498. the blessing

  499. and the supremacy

  500. and the sweetness

  501. of the person

  502. that has come to know us

  503. as we've known

  504. as our Savior

  505. and we forget that.

  506. And so,

  507. here when we stop

  508. and think about it,

  509. I want you to recognize

  510. we've been like Philip.

  511. We really have.

  512. I speak to most of you

  513. this morning

  514. that know the Lord Jesus Christ

  515. as your Savior

  516. and you are here

  517. this morning

  518. recognizing

  519. the certainty

  520. of your salvation.

  521. you were taken

  522. out of the kingdom

  523. of darkness

  524. and put into

  525. his sweet kingdom

  526. of light.

  527. You've been blessed

  528. as it says

  529. in Ephesians,

  530. you've been blessed

  531. with every spiritual blessing

  532. in the heavenlies.

  533. You know

  534. how the story

  535. will end.

  536. And yet,

  537. there you are

  538. faced with some

  539. of the major trials

  540. of your life

  541. whether it's

  542. a sickness

  543. or a wayward child

  544. or a marriage

  545. that's struggling

  546. or the loss

  547. of a job

  548. and at the moment

  549. you find yourself

  550. terrified

  551. and you say

  552. the one thing

  553. I need

  554. is just a better

  555. view of God.

  556. And I want you

  557. to grasp

  558. the sweet truth

  559. of what Jesus says

  560. and hold on to it.

  561. He says there

  562. in the passage

  563. whoever,

  564. verse 9,

  565. whoever has seen me

  566. has seen the Father.

  567. How can you say

  568. show us the Father?

  569. whoever has seen me

  570. has seen the Father.

  571. What we understand

  572. that to mean

  573. is that Jesus

  574. is all in all.

  575. I think about

  576. the passage

  577. over in Colossians

  578. where it says

  579. in him

  580. the fullness

  581. of the Godhead

  582. dwells.

  583. Do you know

  584. what it's saying?

  585. It's saying

  586. that Jesus Christ

  587. is the one

  588. who is entirely

  589. sufficient

  590. for satisfying

  591. the deepest longing

  592. of our heart.

  593. I think about

  594. the way in which

  595. Revelation chapter,

  596. I think it is 5,

  597. plays out.

  598. Revelation chapter 5.

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  599. Let's take a minute

  600. just to go there

  601. so I am speaking

  602. accurately.

  603. Revelation chapter 5.

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  604. It begins

  605. with John

  606. seeing the evidence

  607. of a scroll

  608. there in verse 1

  609. written within

  610. and on the back

  611. sealed with seven seals

  612. and a strong angel

  613. proclaiming with a loud voice

  614. who is worthy

  615. to open the scroll

  616. and break its seals.

  617. And no one

  618. in heaven

  619. or on earth

  620. or under the earth

  621. was able to open

  622. the scroll

  623. or to look at it

  624. and I began to weep

  625. loudly

  626. because no one

  627. was found worthy

  628. and who was worthy

  629. to open the scroll?

  630. Who was it?

  631. The Lion of Judah.

  632. The Lamb that was slain.

  633. The one who is

  634. our Redeemer

  635. or our Savior.

  636. That is the one

  637. who is worthy

  638. to open the scroll.

  639. And what plays out

  640. in the remainder

  641. of chapter 5

  642. is this unbelievable

  643. recitation

  644. of glory

  645. to the Lord Jesus Christ

  646. who is the Lamb

  647. slain for our sins.

  648. And so here we find

  649. Jesus speaking

  650. to His disciples

  651. in the face

  652. of the incredible adversity

  653. that far surpasses

  654. the moments

  655. that we are facing

  656. and in that thing

  657. He says,

  658. listen,

  659. listen,

  660. I'm the one

  661. and I'm the one

  662. who can satisfy

  663. the heartache

  664. and the need

  665. that you have.

  666. And so I've got

  667. to tell you this,

  668. we would do well

  669. to think more

  670. about Him now.

  671. Now,

  672. having said that,

  673. what I want you

  674. to recognize

  675. that follows there

  676. in John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  677. beginning there

  678. in verse 10

  679. and carrying on down

  680. through the end

  681. of the passage

  682. that we're going

  683. to study

  684. is Jesus gives us

  685. three explicit

  686. indicators

  687. of why He is

  688. the God

  689. and Father,

  690. why He is

  691. one with the Father

  692. and why our view

  693. of Him

  694. is sufficient

  695. to satisfy

  696. the needs

  697. of our heart.

  698. that's what He does.

  699. You look there

  700. in the passage,

  701. do you not believe,

  702. verse 10,

  703. that I am in the Father

  704. and the Father

  705. is in me?

  706. Can you not make

  707. this connection

  708. of Jesus

  709. being the complete

  710. and satisfying

  711. evidence

  712. of the Father?

  713. He is the Father.

  714. I've got to tell you,

  715. when we get to heaven,

  716. I'm one

  717. and there are those

  718. who maybe see it differently.

  719. I do not believe

  720. that I'm ever going

  721. to see God the Father.

  722. I'm going to see Jesus

  723. and that will satisfy me.

  724. I will be fully satisfied

  725. with seeing Him.

  726. And here is

  727. Jesus speaking

  728. to Philip

  729. who, you know,

  730. in the midst of this mess,

  731. just let me see God.

  732. Jesus says,

  733. hey listen,

  734. let's get this straight.

  735. I always spoke

  736. the Father's words.

  737. That's what He says

  738. there in verse 10.

  739. Look at it.

  740. He says,

  741. I do not speak

  742. on my own authority.

  743. What Jesus

  744. was reminding Philip

  745. was,

  746. was that His union

  747. and communion

  748. with the Father

  749. was such that

  750. everything He said

  751. was directly

  752. according

  753. to the Father's desire.

  754. One of the things

  755. that happens

  756. as you get older

  757. in marriage,

  758. when marriage

  759. is kind of

  760. growing together,

  761. how many of you know

  762. as you get towards

  763. the later year,

  764. you can fill in

  765. the sentences?

  766. Now,

  767. that doesn't mean

  768. that speech

  769. becomes unnecessary.

  770. You know,

  771. I like to hear

  772. Judith talk,

  773. but I do know

  774. what she's going

  775. to say

  776. in many instances.

  777. Very,

  778. very frail

  779. illustration.

  780. Here is Jesus

  781. saying,

  782. let me tell you

  783. something,

  784. what I say

  785. the Father says.

  786. Over in John

    John 7 chapter mention

  787. chapter 7,

  788. 16,

  789. you're in John,

  790. just look back

  791. for a second

  792. to the passage

  793. in John chapter 7

    John 7:16

  794. verse 16.

  795. Here's what Jesus

  796. said.

  797. He said,

  798. Jesus answered them,

  799. my teaching

  800. is not mine,

  801. but his

  802. who sent me.

  803. There was a question

  804. about,

  805. what are you teaching?

  806. He said,

  807. well,

  808. I'm teaching

  809. what the Father

  810. once taught.

  811. You look over

  812. at another passage

  813. in John chapter 12

    John 12 chapter mention

  814. and go ahead

  815. and go to that one,

  816. John chapter 12

    John 12:49

  817. verse 49.

  818. Jesus says this,

  819. for I have not

  820. spoken of my own

  821. authority,

  822. but the Father

  823. who sent me,

  824. he has himself

  825. given me a commandment.

  826. what to say

  827. and what to speak.

  828. You know,

  829. there's a time

  830. for Robert Frost

  831. and William Shakespeare

  832. and Martin Luther King

  833. or whatever else,

  834. but at the end

  835. of the day,

  836. the truth of the matter

  837. is this,

  838. is that what God

  839. has to say

  840. is sufficient

  841. and supreme

  842. and satisfying

  843. and it's the best

  844. thing to rely upon.

  845. But I've got to

  846. make this point clear.

  847. Jesus wasn't just

  848. talking about God,

  849. he was God's word

  850. and God himself

  851. speaking in human form

  852. to us

  853. in John chapter 6

    John 6:68

  854. verse 68

  855. when Jesus asked

  856. the disciples

  857. after the lengthy sermon

  858. where most everybody left,

  859. he said,

  860. are you guys going

  861. and what did Peter say?

  862. Where are we going?

  863. You have the words of life.

  864. And then again,

  865. in John chapter 7

    John 7:46

  866. verse 46

  867. in the same context

  868. that we are,

  869. one of the things

  870. that takes place

  871. is people come back

  872. and they say this,

  873. no one ever spoke

  874. like this man.

  875. Now what was it

  876. about Christ speaking

  877. that made his words

  878. so powerful?

  879. What was it?

  880. It was that he was

  881. in fact God incarnate.

  882. And that was it.

  883. And here is

  884. Philip

  885. struggling

  886. with the adversity

  887. of his moment

  888. and Jesus says,

  889. listen,

  890. get this straight.

  891. You want to see God?

  892. You've got me.

  893. And everything

  894. I have said

  895. has been God's word.

  896. Second thing

  897. that we find there

  898. in the passage

  899. in John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  900. is that Jesus

  901. always did

  902. the Father's work.

  903. Jesus always

  904. did the Father's work.

  905. You look there,

  906. you're working through

  907. the latter part

  908. of verse 10.

  909. He says,

  910. I do not speak

  911. on my own authority

  912. but the Father

  913. who dwells in me

  914. does his works.

  915. Now,

  916. I've got to admit,

  917. it's a little bit

  918. of a stretch

  919. for us to kind of

  920. step from word

  921. to work, right?

  922. But that's what happened.

  923. First point is,

  924. Jesus always spoke

  925. the Father's words.

  926. Secondly,

  927. Jesus always did

  928. the Father's works.

  929. I love the logic

  930. that you find there

  931. in verse 11

  932. that kind of supports

  933. and fills it out.

  934. It says,

  935. believe me

  936. that I am in the Father

  937. and the Father

  938. is in me

  939. or else believe

  940. on account

  941. of the works themselves.

  942. Look at what is happening

  943. as evidence

  944. of my deity.

  945. I think back

  946. to when Moses

  947. came back

  948. from the burning bush

  949. and his concern

  950. was,

  951. well,

  952. how am I going

  953. to be able

  954. to demonstrate

  955. to the people

  956. of Israel,

  957. the Jews,

  958. and to Pharaoh

  959. that I am your messenger?

  960. And God said,

  961. hey, listen,

  962. I'm going to give you

  963. a couple demonstrative,

  964. I'm going to give you

  965. some miracles

  966. that are going to prove.

  967. And remember

  968. the starting point,

  969. a couple of them,

  970. the Pharaoh's magicians

  971. were able to pull off.

  972. But they reached the point

  973. where the magician said,

  974. this is the,

  975. can anybody fill it out

  976. for me?

  977. This is the finger,

  978. that's beyond us.

  979. There's no hocus pocus here.

  980. We can't pull this one off.

  981. This is for real.

  982. And Jesus over and over again

  983. did miracles

  984. that were undeniable evidence

  985. of God being at work

  986. in that situation.

  987. I go back

  988. to the illustration

  989. where Jesus was in the storm

  990. and the disciples

  991. were kind of freaking out

  992. because there's a mess

  993. and they thought

  994. they were going to drown,

  995. you know,

  996. and Jesus is sleeping

  997. in the boat.

  998. They wake him up

  999. and just a word,

  1000. bang,

  1001. it all shuts down

  1002. immediately.

  1003. Now they had been

  1004. afraid of the storm

  1005. but they were terrified

  1006. at the presence

  1007. of Christ.

1008. And so here we are,

  1009. Jesus is reminding

  1010. Philip,

  1011. hey,

  1012. weigh the evidence.

  1013. I've done works

  1014. that no one

  1015. but God could do.

  1016. The things I've done

  1017. are undeniable proof

  1018. that I am God.

  1019. Incidentally,

1020. while we do not prove

  1021. our deity

  1022. by the works

  1023. that we do,

  1024. we do show

  1025. that we're His children

  1026. when we behave

  1027. like He

  1028. calls us to behave.

  1029. Isn't that right?

  1030. Huh?

  1031. So do your works

  1032. and prove

  1033. you are His

1034. or you have good reason

  1035. to ask yourself,

  1036. am I really

  1037. one of His children?

  1038. I think that's important

  1039. for us to recognize

  1040. when Jesus

  1041. works in the life

  1042. of a believer,

  1043. there is every reason

  1044. to see the evidence

  1045. of transformation

  1046. and change.

  1047. Jesus always did

  1048. the Father's work.

  1049. would be nice

  1050. for us to focus

  1051. on that

  1052. and do it ourselves.

  1053. Let's come

  1054. to the third point.

  1055. Jesus always glorified

  1056. the Father.

  1057. Now,

  1058. allow me to make

  1059. a transition here

  1060. from verse 11

  1061. to verse 12

  1062. for you.

  1063. In verse 11,

  1064. Jesus made the point

  1065. that His works

  1066. proved His deity.

  1067. He then explained,

1068. and I'm going to look

  1069. at this with you

  1070. just for a moment,

  1071. verse 12.

  1072. He says,

  1073. Truly, truly,

  1074. I say to you,

  1075. whoever believes in Me

1076. will also do the works

  1077. that I do,

  1078. and greater works

  1079. than these

  1080. will he do.

  1081. Now,

  1082. how many of you

  1083. have heard that verse

  1084. along with verse 14,

  1085. if you ask Me

  1086. anything in My name,

  1087. I will do it,

  1088. used as verses

  1089. to kind of

  1090. pitch the idea

  1091. that if we ask

  1092. anything we want,

1093. we ought to get it?

  1094. Right?

  1095. How many of you

  1096. have ever heard that?

  1097. Yeah,

  1098. you can go home

  1099. this afternoon

  1100. and listen to

  1101. televangelists

  1102. who will tell you

  1103. that all you have

1104. to do is ask God

  1105. for whatever you want

1106. and send in a check

  1107. for $200,

  1108. and you're getting it.

  1109. There's a song

1110. that I am not inclined

  1111. to sing,

  1112. but it's a good one.

1113. It has this little line

  1114. in it saying,

  1115. but tell me this,

  1116. would Jesus ever wear

1117. a Rolex on His TV show?

  1118. These verses

  1119. have been woefully misused

1120. and people are real suckers

  1121. for them.

  1122. Does anybody ever hear

  1123. about anybody

  1124. walking on water,

  1125. by the way?

  1126. And when you hear

  1127. about all these miraculous,

  1128. you know,

  1129. faith healing,

  1130. blah, blah, blah,

  1131. why don't they go

  1132. to Children's?

  1133. I mean, honestly,

1134. do you know that Jesus

  1135. showed up at places

  1136. like Children's

1137. and He did slam dunks

  1138. on everybody

  1139. that came through?

  1140. I mean,

  1141. the whole crowd.

  1142. Do you follow that?

  1143. Nobody ever walked away

  1144. saying,

  1145. yeah, but.

1146. When Jesus was turned loose,

  1147. it was really bad

  1148. for the medical community

  1149. if they were counting

  1150. on making their checks

  1151. that way.

  1152. You know,

  1153. it's like,

  1154. oh,

  1155. sorry, honey,

  1156. no surgeries today.

  1157. What happened?

  1158. Jesus came to town.

  1159. I mean,

  1160. do you follow that?

1161. And we live in a world

  1162. where I just,

  1163. stop, Tim,

  1164. you're going off track.

  1165. Okay.

  1166. Okay.

  1167. Listen.

  1168. Here's what Jesus says.

  1169. He says,

  1170. you know,

  1171. you're going to do

  1172. greater works than this.

1173. I'm not going to walk

  1174. on water.

  1175. I'm never going

  1176. to heal anybody.

  1177. I may suggest

  1178. an aspirin or two,

  1179. but that's the limit

  1180. of my ability.

  1181. You know,

  1182. but you know

  1183. what I have?

1184. What is the greatest work

1185. that Christ came to do?

  1186. Does anybody know?

  1187. What's the greatest work

1188. that he came to do?

  1189. Tell me.

1190. He came to save people.

1191. I get to be part of that.

  1192. Isn't that right?

  1193. I am pumped

  1194. this morning

  1195. because I've got

  1196. an opportunity

  1197. tomorrow morning

  1198. to share the gospel

  1199. with a person

  1200. I've been working on

  1201. for about a year.

  1202. I'm out taking care

  1203. of the dog

  1204. and the guy walks

  1205. across the neighborhood

  1206. and says,

  1207. hey,

  1208. about a month ago

1209. he was in a poor mood

  1210. and I said,

  1211. well,

1212. why don't we do coffee?

  1213. And here he is.

1214. I've tried to reach out

  1215. to him.

  1216. No opening,

  1217. no opening.

1218. He walks across the lawn

  1219. and he says,

  1220. hey,

1221. we need to get together.

  1222. I said,

  1223. yes.

  1224. I get to talk

  1225. to that guy

  1226. about the only one

1227. who can change his life.

  1228. Huh?

1229. Does it get any better

  1230. than that?

  1231. I watched my dad

  1232. stitch people up.

  1233. I watched my dad

  1234. help people

  1235. with medical problems

1236. and the truth of the matter

  1237. is they all died.

  1238. Do you understand that?

  1239. They all died.

  1240. But people

  1241. who come to faith

  1242. in Christ

  1243. when the story's told,

  1244. they are not

  1245. the same person.

  1246. Old things

  1247. are passed away.

  1248. Behold,

  1249. what?

  1250. All things

  1251. have become new.

1252. And Jesus says to us,

  1253. guess what?

1254. You are going to be involved

  1255. in some bigger things

  1256. than I've ever done.

  1257. Why?

  1258. Because the cross

1259. is going to be behind him

1260. in just a couple hours

1261. and we get to tell people,

  1262. let me tell you,

1263. Jesus died for your sins.

  1264. It's good,

  1265. isn't it?

  1266. You're going to do

  1267. great works.

  1268. You're going to do

  1269. great works.

  1270. As you look

  1271. at this passage,

  1272. Jesus says,

  1273. hey, listen,

  1274. I always glorified

  1275. the Father.

1276. Where do we find that?

  1277. Look at verse 13.

  1278. Whatever you ask

  1279. in my name,

  1280. this will I do

  1281. that the Father

  1282. may be glorified

  1283. in the Son.

  1284. Do you know

  1285. what I have a problem with?

  1286. Same thing

1287. you have a problem with.

  1288. I sometimes forget

  1289. that Tim is not

1290. the center of the universe.

  1291. How about you?

1292. I need to be reminded,

  1293. Jesus is.

  1294. I love that passage.

  1295. In fact,

1296. go ahead and look at it

  1297. because it's just

1298. a real zinger for me.

  1299. It's one of those

  1300. that I have memorized

1301. and sticks in my mind

  1302. and I use

1303. on a fairly regular basis

  1304. in pastoral ministry.

  1305. Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2:20

  1306. verse 20 and 21.

  1307. Paul is talking

  1308. about Timothy,

  1309. not this one,

1310. but the one back then

1311. and here's what he says.

  1312. I have no man

  1313. who is like him

  1314. for all,

  1315. who will genuinely

  1316. be concerned

  1317. for your welfare.

  1318. Bear with me.

  1319. I have no man

  1320. who is like-minded

  1321. who will naturally

  1322. care for your estate,

  1323. King James,

1324. for all seek their own

  1325. and not the things

  1326. of Jesus Christ.

  1327. We're about ourselves

  1328. and here's Jesus saying,

1329. let me tell you something.

1330. I am all about my Father.

  1331. It's fair to say

  1332. that Jesus came

  1333. to save sinners

  1334. but even more significant

  1335. than that,

  1336. Jesus came to glorify

  1337. the Father.

  1338. That's the thing

  1339. that stands out

  1340. above all else.

  1341. And this morning

  1342. as you think

  1343. about the supremacy

  1344. and the significance

  1345. and the sweetness

  1346. of Jesus,

  1347. understand this,

  1348. that the truth

  1349. behind his coming

  1350. and the goal

  1351. of redemption

  1352. is really not just

  1353. the matter

  1354. of saving lost

  1355. and ruined sinners.

  1356. It is the glory

  1357. of God

  1358. and the supremacy

  1359. of God

  1360. that is in focus.

  1361. Turn with me

  1362. just for a second

  1363. before we close

  1364. to what we find

  1365. in John chapter 17

    John 17:1

  1366. verse 1

  1367. and verse 4.

1368. I got to tell you,

  1369. I'll just tell you

  1370. ahead of time,

  1371. we're going to march

  1372. our way through John

1373. and get done with it

1374. but in a different life

  1375. I'd probably preach

  1376. on John 17

  1377. for about a year.

  1378. It is dynamite.

  1379. I know.

  1380. Keep moving.

  1381. Keep moving.

  1382. John 17.

  1383. When Jesus

  1384. had spoken these words,

  1385. he lifted up

  1386. his eyes to heaven

  1387. and said,

  1388. Father,

  1389. the hour has come.

  1390. Glorify your Son

  1391. that the Son

  1392. may glorify you.

  1393. Verse 4.

  1394. I glorified you

  1395. on earth

  1396. having accomplished

  1397. the work

  1398. that you gave me

  1399. to do.

  1400. This morning,

  1401. every one of us,

  1402. every one of us

  1403. that is here

  1404. that knows Jesus

  1405. as our personal Savior

  1406. will find our greatest

  1407. satisfaction

  1408. in the day

  1409. that we see him

  1410. face to face.

  1411. Do you understand that?

  1412. It will never

  1413. get any better

  1414. than that.

1415. And one of the things

  1416. that it says,

  1417. in 1 John 3,

  1418. it says,

1419. he that has this hope

  1420. in him

  1421. purifies himself.

  1422. Hey,

  1423. getting excited

  1424. about the thought

  1425. of seeing Jesus

  1426. someday

  1427. does something

  1428. pretty significant

  1429. with the messy life

  1430. you have.

1431. You don't have to go

  1432. to the self-help aisle

  1433. to deal with

1434. the trash in your life.

  1435. Try Jesus

  1436. and get your eyes

  1437. fixed on him.

  1438. And here is Jesus

  1439. saying to Philip

  1440. who's kind of

  1441. twerked out

  1442. about the mess

  1443. that's coming.

  1444. He says,

  1445. please show me

  1446. the Father.

  1447. Jesus says,

  1448. hey,

  1449. look at me.

  1450. Look at me.

  1451. Look at me.

  1452. Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12:1

  1453. verse 1

  1454. and 2.

  1455. Seeing,

  1456. therefore,

  1457. that we are

  1458. encompassed by

  1459. such a great

  1460. cloud of witnesses,

  1461. let us

  1462. run the race

  1463. with patience.

  1464. Doing what?

  1465. Looking unto Jesus

  1466. who is the author

  1467. and finisher

  1468. of our faith.

  1469. Listen to me.

1470. There are some of you

  1471. that haven't figured out

  1472. that the messy,

  1473. unhappy life

  1474. you're living

  1475. is really because

  1476. you're so focused

  1477. on yourself.

  1478. And you'd like

  1479. to blame other people

  1480. for not joining you

  1481. and focusing on

  1482. yourself.

  1483. In fact,

  1484. you're a little irritated

  1485. with other people

  1486. for not being

  1487. more focused

  1488. on you.

  1489. Can I tell you

  1490. there is no remedy

  1491. for being self-focused

  1492. apart from the grace

  1493. of God

  1494. that helps us

  1495. understand

  1496. that there is

  1497. only one worthy

  1498. of all the glory

  1499. and that's Jesus.

  1500. And so it is

  1501. appropriate for us

  1502. today

  1503. who know Christ,

  1504. who've maybe

  1505. lost our first love

  1506. to cry out

  1507. and say,

  1508. Lord,

  1509. you need to deal

  1510. with me.

  1511. I am sick

  1512. of being

  1513. a self-focused,

  1514. unhappy,

  1515. grumpy person.

  1516. By the way,

1517. you can ask your wife

  1518. as you're driving home,

  1519. how am I doing

  1520. at being unhappy,

  1521. grumpy,

  1522. and since Jesus

  1523. is the remedy,

  1524. do you think

  1525. I need to work

  1526. at that?

  1527. That's really gutsy.

1528. Or you can say it

  1529. to your mom

  1530. or your dad,

  1531. you know,

  1532. but I need

  1533. to get things right.

  1534. There's some of you

  1535. here that don't

  1536. know Christ.

  1537. I don't know

  1538. your heart,

1539. but I gotta tell you,

  1540. you will either

  1541. see him

  1542. as the satisfaction

  1543. of all eternity

1544. or you will see him

  1545. as the judge

  1546. who will condemn you

  1547. to an eternity

  1548. in hell

  1549. for refusing

  1550. his offer

  1551. of salvation

  1552. through his faith,

  1553. grace and faith.

  1554. And I would plead

  1555. with you this morning,

  1556. make it right

  1557. before it's too late.

  1558. Let's close

  1559. in prayer.

  1560. Our Father God,

  1561. this morning,

  1562. we understand

  1563. that the purpose

  1564. of preaching

1565. is not to entertain us

  1566. but to bring us

  1567. to the point

  1568. of saying yes

  1569. or no to God.

  1570. You who are

  1571. supremely worthy

  1572. of all adoration

  1573. and praise,

  1574. you that will occupy

  1575. the glory of heaven

  1576. for all of eternity

  1577. and will satisfy

  1578. our lives

  1579. beyond our wildest

  1580. expectation

  1581. and imagination

  1582. call to us

  1583. this morning

  1584. and encourage us

  1585. to set our affections

  1586. upon things

  1587. that are above,

  1588. to set our eyes

  1589. on Jesus

  1590. that the adversity

  1591. of life

  1592. is not overwhelming,

  1593. that the challenge

  1594. of becoming

  1595. someone other

  1596. than who we are

  1597. by our nature

  1598. may take place

  1599. through the ministry

1600. of the Spirit of God

1601. as we see in Christ

  1602. are changed

  1603. from glory

  1604. into glory.

  1605. Now is the time

  1606. to put the matter

  1607. on the table

  1608. and make decisions

  1609. that honor Christ

  1610. and we ask

  1611. the Spirit's help

  1612. for the glory

  1613. of our Savior

  1614. in whose name

  1615. we pray.

  1616. Amen.
