  1. I'd like you to turn in your Bibles this morning to John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. And an activity in which there are more people engaged in its outcome than we may think.

  4. Generally, we think, well, the preacher is up front and my responsibilities kind of sit there and listen and whatever.

  5. I want to appeal to you that the Scriptures make it clear that one of the duties you have is to be actively engaged in the preaching of the Word by prayer.

  6. And I trust you're doing that.

  7. And I pray that in the flow of the sermon in those moments where you sense it is appropriate and necessary that you freely ask the Lord to help me and help you.

  8. Because we are both mutually dependent upon having the Word make a difference in the way we think.

  9. If I could, over the years of ministry, 35 plus now, if there were one thing, one thing, that I could give to believers.

  10. I'm not involved in salvation.

  11. That's the work of God.

  12. And I don't save people.

  13. I love talking to people that don't know Jesus about the only one who can make a difference in their lives.

  14. But when I am ministering to those who do know Christ,

  15. and a large part of my life ministry has been with people who at least profess to know Christ,

  16. if there is one thing that I could give to them, it would be this,

  17. an understanding of the love of Christ for them.

  18. And we spend far too much time thinking about things that really don't connect to that truth.

  19. And I introduced that here at the very beginning because what we are actually engaged in doing

  20. is working our way through a passage in which we find the love of Christ displayed to us

  21. in undeniable terms against the backdrop of the cross.

  22. Now, you and I, if we were going into a suffering like the cross,

  23. probably we'd be obsessed with our self.

  24. And I can tell you this from personal experience.

  25. Spending time thinking too much about Tim Knoyer is not only destructive and toxic for me,

  26. it's invariably harmful to other people.

  27. How many of you would agree with me?

  28. I mean, thinking about Tim Knoyer, right?

  29. But kind of play it over.

  30. Here's Jesus in the shadow of the cross with one particular interest,

  31. and that is the 11 who he's going to leave behind.

  32. And he knows their hearts.

  33. He knows what they're thinking.

  34. Can you imagine the mess of the disciples' hearts?

  35. On the one hand, they were bickering with each other.

  36. Their usual intramural team sport was arguing about who was going to be what?

  37. Number one.

  38. That's what they were all about.

  39. But on the other hand, there's this certain level of anxiety, uncertainty about,

  40. well, what is going to happen?

  41. We've been following him for three years, and he's cutting out of here.

  42. He said it over and over again.

  43. And they're all worried.

  44. In John chapter 14, let not your hearts be troubled.

    John 14 chapter mention

  45. I've got to tell you something.

  46. It is a conscious and deliberate choice

  47. that people who know Christ can make

  48. to have troubled hearts or not have troubled hearts.

  49. If we do believe that the same one who grants us salvation through faith

  50. can be trusted for other truths as well,

  51. then there is something to be said

  52. for taking control of the way we think

  53. and framing our thought life in the picture of Scriptures.

  54. So here is Jesus saying,

  55. let not your hearts be troubled, fact,

  56. but then he plays it out and gives us good reasons

  57. not to be overwhelmed and troubled.

  58. And so in a broader look at the passage

  59. before we get into the details,

  60. I want you to understand that in the early part of chapter 14,

  61. he deals with the fact that the disciples

  62. can look forward to a certain eternity.

  63. Hey, I'm going to prepare a place for you.

  64. And if it weren't so, I wouldn't have told you.

  65. And I'm going there so you can what?

  66. You can be with me.

  67. Does it get any better than that?

  68. Huh?

  69. I know how my story ends.

  70. I love Revelation chapter 4 and chapter 5.

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  71. I mean, that is a blast, isn't it?

  72. You get into those two chapters

  73. and it kind of lifts your heart up.

  74. That's how the story ends.

  75. I am going to enjoy the presence of Christ forever.

  76. And you who know Christ are going to have the same delight.

  77. This morning as I was in prayer,

  78. I was looking forward to the time of worship with you.

  79. And here's what I thought.

  80. My wife says I'm a little maudlin

  81. and a little bit too pessimistic.

  82. I'm the glass half three quarters empty guy.

  83. That's my nature.

  84. But there's a time that it fits.

  85. And here I was.

  86. I was in prayer and I was thinking,

  87. Lord, I am going to enjoy worship

  88. with other broken vessels like me.

  89. And I thought, and it's going to be good.

  90. And I'm going to delight in it.

  91. And it is going to give me a taste

  92. of what heaven's going to be like.

  93. And I'm looking forward to it.

  94. Are you?

  95. And here's Jesus saying,

  96. Hey, guys, don't be bent out of shape.

  97. You've got a certain eternity.

  98. The second thing he says is,

  99. Hey, listen, understand.

  100. I'm with you.

  101. Okay?

  102. I'm with you.

  103. And his actual understanding

  104. that he eventually is going to help

  105. the disciples find is that

  106. this business of him being with them

  107. is referring to the indwelling ministry

  108. of the Holy Spirit.

  109. He says, listen,

  110. you're going to have union with me.

  111. Third thing he says is that,

  112. and you are going to be involved

  113. in doing a great work.

  114. You're going to be involved

  115. in doing a great work.

  116. Now, how could that be comforting

  117. to the disciples?

  118. Do you understand that at the heart of it,

  119. we all have a sense,

  120. we all have a sense

  121. that we've been created

  122. and we're here for some reason

  123. and we ought to be doing

  124. something of significance.

  125. What am I doing?

  126. Why am I here?

  127. What's this all about?

  128. And here is Jesus speaking

  129. to his disciples

  130. and what we're really going to look here

  131. in the passage that we study this morning

  132. is that there's something going on

  133. that we are engaged in a great work

  134. and we have comfort in knowing

  135. that we are at that task for his glory.

  136. And so as we look at this passage,

  137. I'm going to pick back up there in verse 12.

  138. It says,

  139. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  140. whoever believes in me

  141. will also do the works that I do

  142. and greater works than these

  143. will he do.

  144. Have you ever been in a home

  145. where you looked around

  146. and you realized

  147. that someone had invested

  148. a great amount of emotion

  149. and energy

  150. and resources

  151. in putting it a particular way

  152. and it had all now collapsed into chaos?

  153. I'll never forget.

  154. How many of you know Mount Everest?

  155. You've heard Mount Everest.

  156. I'll never forget

  157. when on a camping trip

  158. in Missouri,

  159. in India,

  160. about five of us spent three days

  161. on Lord Everest's

  162. dilapidated,

  163. decaying,

  164. ruined estate

  165. in India.

  166. He was the

  167. Lord's surveyor

  168. for all of

  169. the empire

  170. in India

  171. and he had a

  172. palatial,

  173. gargantuan home

  174. built

  175. on the very

  176. crest

  177. of a mountain

  178. where from there

  179. on a clear day

  180. he could see

  181. Mount Everest.

  182. And before,

  183. of lasers

  184. and all those other

  185. kinds of things,

  186. he was able to compute

  187. within feet

  188. the height

  189. of that mountain.

  190. You can Google it

  191. to check on me.

  192. And here,

  193. we slept

  194. in these

  195. large,

  196. some of the rooms

  197. were probably

  198. half this size.

  199. They were huge.

  200. And I

  201. slept in a

  202. sleeping bag

  203. in a

  204. building

  205. that had

  206. belonged at one time

  207. to a man

  208. who was

  209. unbelievably

  210. respected

  211. in the empire.

  212. And he built

  213. this wonderful

  214. mansion.

  215. And there

  216. I slept

  217. and looked around

  218. on the walls

  219. and I saw

  220. the plaster

  221. falling off

  222. and there was

  223. still some

  224. furniture sitting

  225. there.

  226. Amazing.

  227. And the

  228. place,

  229. the ceiling

  230. was falling

  231. in in some

  232. places

  233. and the

  234. plaster had

  235. fallen off

  236. the walls

  237. because of

  238. water damage

  239. and the

  240. entire

  241. place

  242. was just

  243. goats.

  244. Inside

  245. the home

  246. were little

  247. deposits

  248. that goats

  249. had left.

  250. And I'm not

  251. talking about

  252. pairings

  253. from their

  254. hooves.

  255. You know,

  256. it's all

  257. over the place.

  258. And I thought

  259. to myself,

  260. you know,

  261. this was

  262. somebody's

  263. dream.

  264. and it was

  265. gone and

  266. done.

  267. And here

  268. is Jesus

  269. saying to

  270. his disciples,

  271. now listen,

  272. you're going

  273. to do

  274. bigger things

  275. than I

  276. did.

  277. How is

  278. that?

  279. One,

  280. it will

  281. come about

  282. through the

  283. work of the

  284. intercession

  285. of Christ.

  286. It is really

  287. stunning when

  288. you stop and

  289. read what we

  290. do there in

  291. verse 12

  292. and he says

  293. this,

  294. he says,

  295. you're going

  296. to do

  297. greater works

  298. than I

  299. do.

  300. And he

  301. wasn't talking

  302. about raising

  303. the dead.

  304. He wasn't

  305. talking about

  306. feeding the

  307. 5,000 or

  308. walking on

  309. water.

  310. He was

  311. really speaking

  312. primarily about

  313. the part that

  314. you and I

  315. play and

  316. will play in

  317. Christ's great

  318. work of

  319. redemption.

  320. Now listen

  321. to me

  322. carefully.

  323. If in

  324. your life

  325. you cannot

  326. look back

  327. and see

  328. the part

  329. that you

  330. have played

  331. in Christ's

  332. work of

  333. redemption,

  334. there will

  335. be sorrow

  336. and loss

  337. and disappointment.

  338. Do you

  339. believe that?

  340. Do you

  341. believe that?

  342. The truth

  343. of the matter

  344. is when

  345. Jesus said

  346. you are going

  347. to do

  348. greater works

  349. than I

  350. have done,

  351. he was

  352. speaking about

  353. the blessing

  354. of being part

  355. of his

  356. ministry of

  357. reconciliation

  358. and leading

  359. people to

  360. the cross.

  361. And as we

  362. think about

  363. that responsibility

  364. I trust that

  365. one of the

  366. things that you

  367. and I take

  368. delight in

  369. is ministering

  370. to people

  371. and helping

  372. them know

  373. that through

  374. the gospel,

  375. through the

  376. Lord Jesus

  377. Christ,

  378. ruined and

  379. destroyed lives

  380. may be

  381. transformed by

  382. the power

  383. of the cross.

  384. Isn't that

  385. right?

  386. Last Monday

  387. I had the

  388. opportunity of

  389. talking with

  390. an individual

  391. and in the

  392. flow of

  393. conversation

  394. one of my

  395. favorite lines

  396. is this,

  397. I know the

  398. only person

  399. who can

  400. turn a mess

  401. around.

  402. And I

  403. can say

  404. and I

  405. know why

  406. I believe

  407. that,

  408. it's because

  409. of what he's

  410. done in my

  411. life.

  412. He brings

  413. salvation,

  414. light and

  415. peace and

  416. blessing and

  417. transformation.

  418. And so here

  419. we are,

  420. you and I

  421. are engaged

  422. in that

  423. work.

  424. And I

  425. want you to

  426. understand that

  427. at the

  428. heart of

  429. what really

  430. helps us

  431. as his

  432. witness is

  433. the fact that

  434. Jesus has

  435. gone before

  436. us, he has

  437. dealt with the

  438. issues of

  439. salvation on

  440. the cross,

  441. he has

  442. satisfied the

  443. wrath of

  444. God, he

  445. has brought

  446. to us not

  447. only forgiveness

  448. but he has

  449. absolutely made

  450. the matter and

  451. the way of

  452. salvation secure

  453. and I trust

  454. that one of the

  455. things that you

  456. take pleasure

  457. in is knowing

  458. that those he

  459. saves, he saves

  460. to the uttermost,

  461. isn't that right?

  462. There's no

  463. question, there's

  464. no doubt.

  465. The fact is also

  466. that we're on

  467. the victor's

  468. side.

  469. I love what

  470. Peter said in

  471. his sermon on

  472. the day of

  473. Pentecost and I

  474. want you to turn

  475. there just for a

  476. moment, keep your

  477. finger there in

  478. John because we're

  479. coming back to

  480. it but go to

  481. Acts chapter 22

    Acts 22:22–24

  482. verse 22

  483. through 24.

  484. Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2:22

  485. verse 22.

  486. Remember how

  487. the sermon

  488. starts out

  489. and Peter

  490. makes it clear,

  491. you know, you

  492. guys crucified

  493. the Lord Jesus

  494. but

  495. Moses

  496. in verse

  497. 22 it says,

  498. Moses said,

  499. the Lord God

  500. will raise up

  501. for you a

  502. prophet like me

  503. from your

  504. brothers and

  505. you shall

  506. listen to him

  507. in whatever

  508. he tells you.

  509. I'm sorry,

  510. I'm in verse

  511. 3, chapter 3.

  512. Verse 22.

  513. Men of Israel,

  514. hear these words,

  515. Jesus of Nazareth,

  516. a man attested

  517. to you by God

  518. with mighty works

  519. and wonders

  520. and signs that

  521. God did through

  522. him in your midst

  523. as you yourselves

  524. know.

  525. This Jesus

  526. delivered up

  527. according to the

  528. definite plan

  529. and foreknowledge

  530. of God.

  531. You crucified

  532. and killed

  533. by the hands

  534. of lawless men.

  535. God raised

  536. him up,

  537. loosing the

  538. pangs of death

  539. because it was

  540. not possible

  541. for him to be

  542. held by it.

  543. And over there

  544. in verse 34

  545. we read this.

  546. For David

  547. did not ascend

  548. into heavens

  549. but he himself

  550. says,

  551. the Lord said

  552. to my Lord,

  553. sit at my right

  554. hand till I

  555. make your enemies

  556. your footstool.

  557. Now here's the

  558. point.

  559. I want you to

  560. understand the

  561. fact of the

  562. matter is we

  563. know how the

  564. story ends and

  565. Jesus wins.

  566. I have to

  567. confess that I

  568. had a grossly

  569. inaccurate view

  570. of what would

  571. happen after the

  572. elections were

  573. over.

  574. I thought

  575. everything kind

  576. of calmed

  577. down,

  578. everybody go

  579. back to their

  580. corners and

  581. it is worse.

  582. Truthfully,

  583. I am so glad

  584. that I know

  585. how the story

  586. ends.

  587. And it is not

  588. going to be

  589. solved in

  590. Washington.

  591. It is going to

  592. be solved when

  593. the Lord Jesus

  594. returns.

  595. And I had to

  596. stop and think

  597. to myself,

  598. you know,

  599. I would imagine

  600. 100 years ago,

  601. 200 years ago,

  602. whatever the time

  603. was, it was just

  604. as messy ultimately

  605. because you have

  606. sinners in conflict

  607. with one another

  608. in every situation.

  609. And so I want you

  610. to stop and

  611. recognize that the

  612. day is coming,

  613. that Jesus is

  614. coming back and

  615. we are on the

  616. victor's side and

  617. that is a comfort

  618. and an encouragement

  619. to us.

  620. In addition to

  621. that, I want you

  622. to recognize,

  623. going back to the

  624. passage in John

    John 14 chapter mention

  625. chapter 14,

  626. that what is

  627. going on today

  628. is Jesus is

  629. interceding for

  630. us.

  631. You look there

  632. and here's what

  633. he says.

  634. He says,

  635. I'm going to the

  636. Father, the last

  637. part of verse 12,

  638. whatever you ask

  639. in my name,

  640. this I will do

  641. that the Father

  642. may be glorified

  643. in the Son.

  644. If you ask me

  645. anything in my

  646. name, I will do

  647. it.

  648. Who's going to

  649. do it?

  650. Jesus.

  651. Who's going to

  652. do it?

  653. The Father.

  654. Why is he going

  655. to have it done?

  656. It is because he

  657. is interceding

  658. for us.

  659. He is our

  660. advocate.

  661. He is our

  662. mediator.

  663. He is our

  664. judge.

  665. And if you

  666. are sitting

  667. here this

  668. morning feeling

  669. a little

  670. overwhelmed by

  671. your life and

  672. the baggage that

  673. you have, I

  674. would, listen to

  675. me carefully,

  676. write this down

  677. because you can

  678. hold on to it.

  679. I want you to

  680. memorize two

  681. different passages

  682. of scripture that

  683. will help inform

  684. your thinking and

  685. draw you out of

  686. the swamp.

  687. Romans chapter

    Romans 8:31–38

  688. 8, verse 31

  689. through 38.

  690. And Ephesians

    Ephesians 3:14–19

  691. chapter 3, verse

  692. 14 through 19.

  693. Whenever you

  694. find yourself

  695. consumed by

  696. things that are

  697. not productive

  698. and healthful, I

  699. want to encourage

  700. you to get your

  701. hands and your

  702. head around these

  703. two passages.

  704. It reminds us of

  705. this fact.

  706. Jesus loves us and

  707. he is on our

  708. side.

  709. The fact of the

  710. matter is, Jesus

  711. stands today before

  712. the Father and he

  713. intercedes for us.

  714. And that's what we

  715. find here.

  716. Jesus says, you're

  717. going to do great

  718. works.

  719. How am I going to

  720. do them?

  721. I'm going to be

  722. praying for you.

  723. I'm going to be

  724. interceding for you.

  725. I'm going to be

  726. helping you.

  727. And you can have

  728. confidence in how

  729. the story ends.

  730. Now there's another

  731. truth that I want you

  732. to get your hands

  733. around this morning.

  734. Look at verse 15.

  735. If you love me, you

  736. will keep my

  737. commandments.

  738. Great works not only

  739. come through the

  740. intercession of

  741. Christ, great works

  742. also come through our

  743. loving obedience.

  744. Let me try that

  745. again.

  746. Great works come

  747. through our loving

  748. obedience.

  749. Now in order to

  750. help you think this

  751. through, I want you

  752. to recognize that it

  753. is important for us to

  754. put together several

  755. different thoughts that

  756. flow here.

  757. You look there in

  758. verse 15.

  759. If you love me, you'll

  760. keep my commandments.

  761. Verse 21.

  762. Whoever has my

  763. commandments and keeps

  764. them, he it is who

  765. loves me.

  766. Verse 23.

  767. Jesus answered him,

  768. if anyone loves me, he

  769. will keep my word.

  770. Verse 24.

  771. Whoever does not love

  772. me does not keep my

  773. word.

  774. So do you get the

  775. picture?

  776. If you love me, what

  777. happens?

  778. You keep my

  779. commandments.

  780. Now incidentally, when

  781. we think about his

  782. commandments, we can

  783. sometimes think about

  784. his commandments as

  785. being burdensome,

  786. difficult,

  787. obligations that we

  788. kind of have to

  789. perform if we want

  790. the story to end

  791. well.

  792. Right?

  793. And there's an

  794. aspect to that which

  795. is true.

  796. Several years ago, I

  797. found out that having

  798. the brakes done on my

  799. car would cost me

  800. about $450.

  801. Have the pads

  802. changed?

  803. And just being a little

  804. perverse, I thought that

  805. I would check and see

  806. what brake pads cost.

  807. Does anybody know that

  808. they're reasonably

  809. inexpensive?

  810. They're really kind of

  811. almost close to dirt

  812. cheap.

  813. And I thought to

  814. myself, why am I

  815. paying somebody else

  816. about $100 plus to do

  817. brake pads?

  818. I'd never done them

  819. before.

  820. But I am of the mind

  821. that if you can watch

  822. YouTube, you can do

  823. brain surgery.

  824. Not entirely true.

  825. Don't quote me.

  826. But, first of all, I got

  827. Dwayne Covert to coach me

  828. because I didn't want to

  829. take a dry run and end up

  830. in the ditch, you know.

  831. And so he kind of watched

  832. me through this.

  833. But I actually have tools

  834. now for doing brake pads

  835. and I do them for

  836. entire family.

  837. You know, it's like,

  838. is this hard to do?

  839. No.

  840. Just follow directions.

  841. Got to say that again

  842. slowly.

  843. Just follow directions.

  844. Do you know that

  845. directions are actually

  846. good for you?

  847. And as we get older,

  848. we actually can learn

  849. some things.

  850. I am at the stage where

  851. before I decide I'm going

  852. to put a kit together

  853. or build, you know,

  854. whatever.

  855. I actually read the

  856. directions.

  857. Yeah, it's like, oh,

  858. you can teach an old dog

  859. new tricks, you know.

  860. Well, I've had so many

  861. times where I've had the

  862. parts over on the side

  863. that I didn't use and I

  864. didn't know what they were

  865. for until I discovered

  866. that it just didn't fit.

  867. So now here's the point.

  868. We look at this statement.

  869. Okay, if you love me, you

  870. keep my commandments.

  871. And we tend to think about

  872. this and say, well, what is

  873. Christ doing here?

  874. Is he pointing to his

  875. disciples and saying, if

  876. you're really one of mine,

  877. you'll obey.

  878. And that has a ring of truth

  879. to it.

  880. But remember, when Jesus

  881. said this, he was not

  882. challenging his 11 remaining

  883. disciples as to the question

  884. of whether or not they

  885. were saved.

  886. What was he trying to do?

  887. He was trying to encourage

  888. them.

  889. He was trying to lift their

  890. spirits up.

  891. He was trying to say, if

  892. you just follow the YouTube

  893. directions, your breaks

  894. will work.

  895. It'll work.

  896. Trust me.

  897. The things that I want, I'm

  898. not going to use the fancy

  899. Greek terms here, but you

  900. can take two little thoughts

  901. and if you want to write in

  902. your Bible, you can put

  903. condition and consequence.

  904. Condition goes over if you

  905. love me.

  906. Consequence goes over keep my

  907. commandments.

  908. Condition, consequence.

  909. And what we find in this

  910. passage is Jesus is driving

  911. home the logic that the fact

  912. of love in our lives will

  913. bring us to obedience and

  914. obedience will help us do

  915. great things.

  916. Let me have you see this in a

  917. very similar pattern over in

  918. John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  919. Turn there, if you will, just

  920. for a moment.

  921. John chapter 21, not very far

    John 21 chapter mention

  922. away.

  923. Can I tell you that in John

    John 21:15–18

  924. chapter 21, verse 15 through

  925. 18, we have a passage where I

  926. am convinced that Jesus is not

  927. testing Peter's love.

  928. When they'd finished breakfast,

  929. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  930. Simon, son of John, do you love

  931. me more than these?

  932. He said, yes, Lord, you know

  933. that I love you.

  934. Did Jesus know that he actually

  935. loved him?

  936. What's the answer?

  937. He did.

  938. Jesus knew.

  939. And he says, well, okay, feed

  940. my lambs.

  941. He said to him a second time,

  942. Simon, son of John, do you love

  943. me?

  944. He said, yes, Lord, you know

  945. that I love you.

  946. He said, tend my sheep.

  947. He said to him a third time,

  948. Simon, son of John, do you love

  949. me?

  950. Peter was grieved because he

  951. said to him a third time, do you

  952. love me?

  953. And he said to him, Lord, you know

  954. everything, right?

  955. You got it.

  956. Yes, you do.

  957. You know that I love you.

  958. Jesus said, feed my sheep.

  959. Condition.

  960. I love him.

  961. Consequence.

  962. I obey him.

  963. Let me drive that home for you

  964. because sometimes this morning I

  965. think we get lost in the facts

  966. that, you know, the truth of the

  967. matter is, is I have a tendency

  968. to sometimes think that the

  969. commandments he gives are

  970. burdensome.

  971. They kind of, they interfere with

  972. what I want.

  973. But it goes back to doing breaks.

  974. If you don't follow his

  975. instructions and all of them are

  976. good.

  977. Would you agree with that in

  978. theory?

  979. Just say with me.

  980. Yeah, in theory.

  981. In theory, what God tells me is

  982. actually, now don't anybody send

  983. me an email because I'm using a

  984. little bit of sarcasm here.

  985. So just get this point, okay?

  986. When God tells us to do

  987. something, it's good.

  988. Why is it good?

  989. Because he's good.

  990. So when it says, if you love me,

  991. keep my commandments, the purpose

  992. of that instruction is this.

  993. So that as we obey him, we will do

  994. good works.

  995. We'll accomplish great things.

  996. We'll be involved in doing things

  997. that in the rear view mirror we look

  998. back and say, wow, how did that

  999. happen?

1000. It was me following his counsel,

1001. obeying him, and enjoying the outcome

1002. as the result of that.

1003. So let's kind of work this through to

1004. place it in our mind.

  1005. Our love produces obedience.

1006. And that's how he is glorified and

1007. how we do great things.

1008. Great works on our part, let me have

1009. you understand this, never happen

  1010. apart from obeying him.

1011. Great works on our part never happen

  1012. apart from obeying him.

1013. You know, sometimes we're all cut up

1014. and fantasizing what it would be like

1015. to do great things for God.

1016. Oh, I would like to see drug addicts

  1017. saved.

1018. I'd like to be involved in bringing the

1019. gospel to people whose lives are really

  1020. messy.

1021. I'd like to help draw homeless people

1022. out from under the bridge.

1023. Those are all good things.

  1024. They really are.

1025. But you're not going to make it out of

1026. kindergarten if you're not willing to

1027. obey in the things he's already put on

1028. the plate in front of you right now.

1029. You're a little bit like the farmer who

1030. loved the idea of a good harvest, but he

1031. really didn't like the idea of getting

1032. out in the morning and doing the fields

1033. and caring for the responsibilities that

  1034. go with it.

1035. I got to make this point clear.

1036. There is a connection between the seeds

1037. of obedience that we sow and the fruit

1038. of blessings that we reap.

1039. On the face of it, obedience is actually

1040. harder than we'd like to admit.

1041. Wouldn't you agree with that?

1042. I mean, truth of the matter is, is every

1043. one of us here, we have a problem on a

1044. regular basis with obedience in our

  1045. life.

1046. How many of you have kind of struggled

1047. with something that the Lord's been

  1048. drawing to your attention?

  1049. Well, not right now.

  1050. I don't want to do it because so-and-so,

1051. you know, we've got all kinds of reasons.

1052. I come to the third point.

1053. Great works happen through the enabling

1054. of the Spirit of God.

1055. Remember, Jesus is encouraging his

  1056. disciples, I'm leaving.

1057. Don't be worried because the story ends

1058. well and you're going to be with me.

1059. And by the way, in the intermediate time,

1060. you're going to do some phenomenal

1061. things, you're going to be involved in

  1062. something unbelievable.

  1063. How's that?

1064. Well, you're going to obey my word.

  1065. And how's that?

1066. Through the enabling of the Holy Spirit.

  1067. Look at verse 16.

1068. And I will ask the Father and he will

1069. give you another helper to be with you

  1070. forever.

1071. Now remember, the disciples were pretty

1072. troubled because they were beginning to get

1073. the idea that Jesus was going to be

1074. crucified and he was leaving them.

1075. And here is Jesus saying, listen, I'm

1076. going to be going away.

1077. And you can understand their anxiety and

1078. their uncertainty and their concern for

1079. what their future was going to be like.

1080. And here is Jesus saying to them, you're

1081. going to have another helper.

1082. Now the word another is a word in the

1083. Greek, I'm not going to dive into it, but

1084. there's a couple different words that are

  1085. used in Greek.

1086. Another can be like different.

1087. Or another can be just the same.

1088. And here is Jesus saying that you're

1089. going to have another helper just like

1090. me who is going to be with you and his

1091. role is going to be to be your helper.

1092. Now it's very interesting and we'll get to

1093. this later in our preaching through the

  1094. book of John.

1095. I don't know if Pastor Shearer gets to

1096. do this or I do.

  1097. Well, it's John chapter 16 verse 7.

    John 16:7

1098. Look at it just for a moment.

1099. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth, it is

1100. for your advantage that I go away.

1101. For if I do not go away, the helper will

  1102. not come to you.

  1103. Hey, try that.

1104. It's actually going to be better for you

1105. if I'm out of here.

  1106. What?

  1107. Here's Jesus back in 14.

1108. He says, I want you to understand that the

1109. Father is going to give you the helper to be

  1110. with you forever.

1111. Even the spirit of truth, verse 17, whom

1112. the world cannot receive because it neither

1113. sees him or knows him.

1114. You know him for he dwells with you and

  1115. will be in you.

1116. I will not leave you orphans.

1117. I will come to you.

1118. Now, I want you to understand that what Jesus

1119. was encouraging the disciples to recognize

1120. is that after he left, we would receive the

1121. Holy Spirit and the indwelling spirit is

1122. profoundly significant to the spiritual life.

1123. Would you agree with me?

1124. Let me put it this way.

1125. The amount of attention to you that you give to

  1126. living a spiritual life

1127. is paired, is coupled to your sensitivity to the need

  1128. of the Holy Spirit.

  1129. Does that make sense?

1130. Do you follow what I'm saying?

1131. Do you follow what I'm saying?

1132. You cannot live a spiritually productive life apart

1133. from the enabling of the Spirit of God.

1134. And my sensitivity to living a spiritual life leads me

1135. to have a desperate dependence upon the Holy Spirit.

1136. And here is Jesus saying to his disciples, you guys are

1137. going to knock it out of the park.

1138. I mean, you guys are going to be involved in witnessing

  1139. and sharing the gospel.

1140. In fact, later in the book of Acts, it says,

1141. the men who have turned the world upside down are here?

  1142. Huh?

1143. I got to tell you.

1144. The best news in the world

  1145. is not material.

  1146. It's spiritual.

  1147. It's spiritual.

1148. No amount of money can solve the problem of the darkness of a person's heart.

  1149. Do you understand that?

1150. And apart from the enabling of the Spirit of God,

1151. nothing can change a man.

1152. And here's Jesus saying, you know,

1153. your great works are going to flow out through the gift of the Holy Spirit.

1154. Now, in relationship to that,

1155. Jesus makes that statement in verse 18.

  1156. He says,

1157. And I'm not going to leave you as orphans.

1158. I'm not going to leave you as orphans.

1159. The fact of the matter is,

1160. is that he is going to be in us

1161. and he is going to make his home with us.

  1162. Look at verse 20.

1163. In that day, you will know that I am in the Father

1164. and you in me and I in you.

1165. So, where's the Holy Spirit today?

  1166. He's in me.

1167. That is a great blessing

  1168. and an undeniable truth.

  1169. Now,

1170. does that mean that I kind of just walk around

1171. under the Holy Spirit's control constantly?

  1172. No.

1173. Because I can be disobedient to the Holy Spirit

  1174. and I can what?

  1175. I can grieve him.

1176. He is there to prompt,

  1177. to encourage me.

1178. One of the passages that I love

  1179. is in Galatians 5, verse 16.

    Galatians 5:16

  1180. Walk by the Spirit.

1181. Can anybody finish it for me?

  1182. And you will,

  1183. what?

1184. Not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

1185. So, when you're struggling with covetousness

1186. or you're struggling with lust

1187. or you're struggling with anger,

1188. does anybody have anger issues?

1189. Does anybody struggle with lust?

1190. Everybody pops their hands up all over the place.

  1191. I saw that.

  1192. You know, it's like,

1193. does anybody struggle with covetousness?

  1194. Everybody's raising their hands.

  1195. You know,

  1196. yeah, yeah, yeah,

  1197. I'm one of those.

  1198. Listen to me.

  1199. Walk by the Spirit

  1200. and you,

  1201. you have a shot.

1202. Maybe you can pull it off.

  1203. You will not

  1204. fulfill

1205. the lusts of the flesh.

  1206. One of the reasons

1207. many Christians live such ineffective

  1208. and unhappy lives

1209. is because they do not appreciate

  1210. and appropriate the blessing

1211. of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

  1212. Here's Jesus

  1213. saying,

  1214. listen,

1215. I want you to understand

1216. that the indwelling Holy Spirit

  1217. is there for you

1218. and He stays in the New Testament believer

1219. and He's not going to leave us.

1220. He will be with you forever.

  1221. So,

1222. in the face of carrying on

  1223. the challenge of ministry

1224. in the face of Christ's crucifixion

1225. and His return to the Father,

1226. what Jesus says to His disciples

  1227. is this,

1228. I want you to be of good comfort.

1229. I want you to know this.

1230. It's going to work out well.

  1231. Why?

1232. Because you have the indwelling ministry

  1233. of the Holy Spirit.

  1234. He is in you

  1235. to help you.

  1236. Now,

1237. there are some essential questions

1238. that linger in the back of our minds

  1239. from time to time.

  1240. You know,

1241. we ask ourselves the question,

  1242. where am I going?

1243. And the answer for the believer is,

  1244. what?

  1245. I'm going to heaven.

  1246. You betcha.

  1247. I remember talking with a neighbor

  1248. and strangely enough,

1249. we got on this conversation

1250. about how the story ends

  1251. and I said,

  1252. I'm going to heaven.

  1253. What?

1254. How can you be sure?

  1255. I said,

  1256. well,

1257. it has nothing to do with me.

1258. I am not the hero in my story,

  1259. right?

1260. It has to do with Jesus.

1261. He died and forgave all of my sins.

  1262. I'm going to heaven.

  1263. So you ask yourself,

  1264. how's the story end?

  1265. Where am I going?

  1266. I'm going to heaven.

1267. And who really cares about me?

  1268. I mean,

  1269. you know,

1270. we don't want to admit that publicly,

  1271. but we really do

  1272. have a concern

1273. for who cares about us.

  1274. I mean,

  1275. am I right?

  1276. Come on.

  1277. Anybody out there

1278. want to nod their head

1279. just make me feel a little better?

  1280. Yeah.

  1281. Yeah.

  1282. There's this better song

  1283. than the one,

  1284. Jesus loves me,

  1285. this I know.

  1286. Right?

1287. Because Romans tells me so.

  1288. Well,

  1289. you can add Ephesians

  1290. to that one too

1291. and you can add John.

  1292. but you know,

  1293. how can I do

  1294. what I should?

1295. He answered all those questions

  1296. for his disciples.

1297. I will never leave you

  1298. or forsake you.

1299. I will be with you always.

1300. And you will have the blessing

  1301. of the Holy Spirit

  1302. who indwells you,

  1303. who will enable you

  1304. to do the things

  1305. that he calls you

  1306. to do.

  1307. So,

1308. let me have you recognize

  1309. several truths

  1310. to hold on to.

  1311. You can know

1312. where you will spend eternity.

  1313. I know where I'm going

  1314. when I die.

1315. I wonder if you do.

  1316. It's a concern.

1317. I have to tell you

  1318. that over the years

  1319. I've seen people

  1320. who have sat

  1321. under the faithful teaching

1322. of the word of God

  1323. for decades,

  1324. who've had something happen

  1325. and just turned

  1326. their heart off

  1327. and hardened themselves

  1328. to the point

  1329. of being an absolute

  1330. embittered,

  1331. angry,

  1332. unhappy individual

  1333. whose life is trashed.

1334. I've got to tell you

1335. that's not the general pattern

  1336. for a person

  1337. who knows Christ.

1338. And if you are here

  1339. this morning

1340. and you do not know Christ,

  1341. let me tell you,

1342. the issue of the gospel

  1343. is this,

  1344. is you can know

  1345. for certain

  1346. where you're going

  1347. to spend eternity

  1348. and that's an answer

  1349. you need to reconcile.

  1350. Second thing is this,

  1351. you can be assured

  1352. of his presence.

  1353. You can be assured

  1354. of his presence.

1355. How many of you know

  1356. that we do better

  1357. when other people

  1358. are around us

  1359. that have leverage

1360. and a little bit of teeth?

  1361. Do you follow that?

  1362. Christ in you,

  1363. the hope of glory.

1364. We can count on Christ

  1365. to be there.

1366. I know he is with me

1367. in this journey of life.

1368. He will never leave me

  1369. nor forsake me.

  1370. And then finally,

  1371. you can be assured

  1372. of his help.

  1373. You can be assured

  1374. of his help.

  1375. Can I tell you

1376. that one of the difficulties

  1377. in evangelism

  1378. is that people

  1379. have a tendency

  1380. of getting the cart

  1381. before the horse.

1382. What do I mean by that?

  1383. I mean, it's like,

  1384. I don't know.

  1385. I don't know

  1386. how I'm ever going

  1387. to stop being

  1388. an obsessive,

  1389. self-centered,

  1390. unhappy,

  1391. angry,

  1392. embittered person.

  1393. That's all I know.

  1394. How can I solve

  1395. that problem?

  1396. Well,

  1397. if you're a believer,

  1398. you have the enabling

  1399. of the Holy Spirit

  1400. who is in you.

  1401. I love to say,

1402. and you who know me

1403. have heard me say it

  1404. so many times,

1405. you don't have to stay

  1406. the way you are.

  1407. That's pretty good news,

  1408. isn't it?

1409. You don't have to stay

  1410. the way you are.

  1411. Well,

  1412. no.

  1413. What did Jesus say?

  1414. He will give you

  1415. another helper

1416. who will be with you

  1417. forever.

1418. So let me push it together.

  1419. If Jesus loved

  1420. his 11 little disciples

  1421. who were huddled

  1422. in that upper room

  1423. and were very anxious

  1424. about their certain future,

  1425. and he gave them

  1426. this great comfort,

1427. and it was good enough

  1428. for them, right,

  1429. to live victorious,

  1430. profitable lives.

  1431. And by the way,

1432. how'd they all end up?

  1433. They had retirement homes

  1434. in Florida.

1435. They got a motor home.

  1436. They spent the rest

1437. of their life driving around.

  1438. How'd they die?

  1439. Only one of them

  1440. died of old age.

  1441. The rest of them,

1442. they went out in glory.

  1443. Isn't that right?

1444. If you're here this morning,

  1445. Jesus loves you,

1446. and he has called you

  1447. to be engaged

  1448. in a great work

  1449. of eternal significance,

  1450. obedience.

  1451. And you don't have

  1452. to do it

  1453. by yourself.

  1454. Let's close in prayer.

  1455. Our Father God,

  1456. this morning,

  1457. as we think about

  1458. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1459. our Savior,

  1460. and our Master,

  1461. the one who someday

  1462. we will see

  1463. and someday

  1464. enjoy forever

  1465. in heaven,

  1466. we recognize

  1467. that the enemy

  1468. of our souls

  1469. so often diverts

  1470. our attention

  1471. from the glory

  1472. and the sufficiency

  1473. of Christ

  1474. to get locked up

  1475. on petty

  1476. and different things

  1477. and ends up

  1478. causing us

  1479. who know Christ

  1480. to be unhappy

  1481. and uncertain

  1482. and anxious

  1483. and fretful.

  1484. and you call out

  1485. to us

  1486. in your tenderness

  1487. and you say,

  1488. come unto me

1489. and I will give you rest.

  1490. And Father God,

  1491. this morning,

1492. I would plead with you

  1493. that you would work

  1494. in the lives

  1495. of your people

  1496. that they would

  1497. allow these truths

  1498. to bear fruit

  1499. in their lives.

  1500. that the ministry

  1501. of the indwelling spirit

  1502. would be very real

  1503. in strengthening us

  1504. to be productive,

  1505. growing Christians

  1506. for the glory

  1507. of the cross.

  1508. Help us this morning

  1509. to be humble enough

  1510. to admit

1511. where there are some needs

1512. that we can't care for

  1513. that only a contrite

  1514. and a humble heart

  1515. can bring about

  1516. the change

  1517. that is necessary

  1518. when we call out

1519. and ask you to work.

1520. And I think this morning

1521. of those that are here

  1522. that may not know

  1523. the Lord Jesus Christ,

1524. even though they have sat

  1525. maybe for years

  1526. under the teaching

  1527. of the gospel,

  1528. that this morning

  1529. your spirit

  1530. would convict them

  1531. of the empty

  1532. hardness of their heart

1533. and they would cry out

  1534. to Jesus

  1535. to be their Savior.

  1536. We ask this

  1537. in Jesus' name.

  1538. Amen.

  1539. Amen.
