  1. Ever find yourself saying the things that you never swore you would say that you heard from your parents?

  2. ! Yeah, I'm there. I've been there. I continue to live in that space.

  3. How about some of these statements?

  4. Don't look at me with those eyes.

  5. Quiet down. I can't hear myself think.

  6. Or, as long as you're under my roof, you live by my rules.

  7. Or, shut the door. We were raised in a barn.

  8. Or, stop crying. This is my favorite. Stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about.

  9. I think I've said that more than once.

  10. No means no. And that's all no means.

  11. Or, I'm going to count to three.

  12. And one that we use quite often at our home is,

  13. If you eat too many snacks, you might ruin your dinner.

  14. Well, I want to key in on that last phrase because I think that's probably true in the Christian life as well.

  15. Over the last couple weeks, we've been talking about the significance of fruitfulness and talking about the importance of our abiding relationship in Christ.

  16. And I think what stands in the way more than anything else in life is that we fill ourself up with all of the good things of life and we have no space left for the best thing in God.

  17. What stands in the way of an abiding relationship with Christ is that we find ourselves abiding and satisfying our heart and soul, at least temporarily, in everything else other than Christ.

  18. So we have no room left in our hearts for Him.

  19. We have no room left in our life to be filled up with the real soul-satisfying life source of Jesus.

  20. And so, because of that, we do not abide in Christ.

  21. And because of that, we are barren in life.

  22. We are empty in our fruitfulness.

  23. And we wonder why we can't find the kind of rest and satisfaction and contentment our soul really needs.

  24. C.S. Lewis puts it this way.

  25. It would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak.

  26. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and pleasure and ambition, when infinite joy is offered to us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum,

  27. because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.

  28. We are far too easily pleased.

  29. And yet, as we look into the scriptures, we see that the psalmist, in particular, his heart was filled up with a deep, satisfying relationship with God.

  30. He says in Psalm 1611,

  31. There is fullness of joy at his right hand, our pleasures forevermore.

  32. Is that your experience this morning?

  33. An experience of being filled up with the pleasure and wonder of God today?

  34. We have been spoiling our dinner, as it were.

  35. The things that were meant to nurture and encourage and comfort and give us joy and peace and meaning and purpose in life are spoiled by the things of life we fill ourself up with to kind of salve over the hurt and the anxiety and the pressures that we feel from day to day.

  36. We run to the well of the world rather than running to the true life source that can be found in God.

  37. When we come to our text this morning, in John chapter 15, verses 12 to 17, and I have to be honest, it was really difficult this week for me to get my arms around this passage.

    John 15:12–17

  38. Not because the truths that are in the passage are difficult to grasp, but there seems to be so much interplay between concepts that seem to interact with one another.

  39. And it's hard to know what comes first and hard to know what follows afterwards.

  40. What stands as the starting point for the fruitfulness that God wants us to have?

  41. And how do we, as God's people, live in a way that is pleasing to him?

  42. The challenge comes to us because of two things, I believe.

  43. First, the challenge comes because most of the words that we read and most of the concepts that we'll find in this passage of Scripture are familiar to us.

  44. And that's a challenge because we have grown up with them.

  45. From the time that we were in church, from the earliest points of our life, we've heard about the love of Christ.

  46. And so as soon as we hear about the love of Christ, we figure we can just flip that switch.

  47. We've heard this message, we know this truth, we can check out and just think about what's happening the rest of the week.

  48. There's a familiarity, but there's also something that is quite foreign about this passage.

  49. When we talk about an abiding relationship, when we talk about dwelling and existing in God,

  50. we don't comprehend, it doesn't quite compute because we know doing, but we don't know being.

  51. How can we do being?

  52. How can I accomplish that in my life?

  53. And that's what makes a passage like this so difficult, is the competition between the familiar and the foreign.

  54. Well, I wish I could tell you that I have all the answers, but I trust that through our time this morning,

  55. there will be at least a little clarity in our understanding of the Scripture.

  56. So if you would, please turn to John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  57. John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  58. Let me read for us, beginning in verse 9, and I'll read through verse 12.

  59. If you're a guest with us this morning, it's on page 901 in the Pew Bible in front of you.

  60. I'm starting in verse 9 because it provides a little segue into our discussion for this morning.

  61. He says this, excuse me, it's 902.

  62. As the Father loved me, so I have loved you.

  63. Abide in my love.

  64. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love,

  65. just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in His love.

  66. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you,

  67. and that your joy may be full.

  68. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

  69. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

  70. You are my friends if you do what I command.

  71. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing.

  72. But I have called you friends.

  73. For all that I have heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

  74. You did not choose me, but I chose you,

  75. and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit,

  76. and that your fruit should abide,

  77. so that whatever you ask the Father in my name,

  78. He may give it to you.

  79. These things I command you,

  80. so that you will love one another.

  81. Well, one thing is absolutely clear in this passage.

  82. There is something to be understood in relationship to love.

  83. As a matter of fact, the Gospel of John is so incaptivated by this concept of love,

  84. 57 times John talks about love throughout his Gospel record.

  85. Four times as many as any of the other Gospel records.

  86. And in these few chapters, from chapter 13 to 17,

  87. in these last final hours, the final moments of Jesus with His disciples,

  88. Jesus is talking about love 34 out of those 57 times.

  89. Almost 60% of the time He spends talking about love,

  90. He is dealing with the issue with His disciples.

  91. He wants His disciples to know that there is staying power,

  92. there is buttressing strength,

  93. there is fortification for a life of a disciple.

  94. As He comes to understand and to dwell in the love of Christ,

  95. it will accomplish the objective that God has for them.

  96. If they come to terms with what He means about this important concept of love.

  97. And so in these final moments,

  98. these final hours of Jesus with His disciples,

  99. before He will go to the cross,

  100. He wants them to appreciate what it means

  101. to be filled up with the love of Christ.

  102. This morning, as we approach this passage,

  103. I want to ask this pertinent question.

  104. The question is,

  105. are you a friend of God?

  106. And I ask you that question because

  107. we come to that in the middle of this passage,

  108. and what will robe our life,

  109. the fruit that will be evidenced from our life

  110. will demonstrate whether or not you are truly a friend of God today.

  111. Well, we find something about friendship through these verses,

  112. beginning in verse 12.

  113. It begins with,

  114. This is my commandment,

  115. that you love one another as I have loved you.

  116. Front and center,

  117. we see that the friendship with God comes

  118. because you are cherished by Christ.

  119. You are cherished by Christ.

  120. Notice,

  121. everything that will follow from their life

  122. is a result of the initiating love of Christ for them.

  123. This is my commandment,

  124. that you love,

  125. how?

  126. You love as I have loved you.

  127. Their ability to bear the fruitfulness of love

  128. will come as a result of understanding

  129. and steeping themselves in the love of Christ,

  130. as I have loved you.

  131. We saw that the key for fruitfulness

  132. is this abiding relationship with Jesus Christ.

  133. Jesus begins to put some flesh on that in verse 9,

  134. where he begins to be more specific

  135. about what does that abiding relationship look like.

  136. It's not just abiding in Christ,

  137. it's abiding in something very specifically.

  138. Abiding, as it says at the end of verse 9,

  139. in His love,

  140. which will produce a changed life,

  141. a pure life,

  142. a holy life.

  143. Well, you might say,

  144. that sounds like doing to me.

  145. How do we do this?

  146. What does it mean to have an abiding relationship with Christ

  147. that is abiding in His love?

  148. Help me understand.

  149. How do we exist in God's love?

  150. How are we aware of this love

  151. and come to appreciate this love?

  152. Is it about being satisfied with Him?

  153. Is it about being secure in His love?

  154. What is this really about?

  155. How does one arrive in this place?

  156. This is where the familiar moves into the realm of the foreign.

  157. And whatever the answer is,

  158. Jesus is proposing that the key to fruitfulness

  159. is this concept of loving.

  160. So whatever will come from our life

  161. in terms of fruitfulness

  162. is dependent upon understanding

  163. the significance of abiding in His love.

  164. And the Apostle Paul

  165. reinforces this significance

  166. in Ephesians chapter 3.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  167. Listen as I read from verses 14 to 19.

  168. Paul is praying for the church of Ephesus.

  169. He says,

  170. For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,

  171. from whom every family in heaven and earth is named,

  172. that according to the riches of His glory

  173. He may grant you to be strengthened with power

  174. through His Spirit in your inner being.

  175. Now this,

  176. So that Christ may dwell,

  177. same word,

  178. in your hearts through faith.

  179. And what does it lead to?

  180. That you, being rooted and grounded in love,

  181. may have strength to comprehend

  182. with all the saints

  183. what is the breadth and length

  184. and height and depth

  185. and to know the love of Christ

  186. that surpasses knowledge.

  187. This is not only a significant concept

  188. for the church of Ephesus to understand,

  189. but it was something that they still

  190. hadn't quite come to terms with.

  191. And so Paul is praying

  192. that God would do a work in their life

  193. to help tune them in

  194. to the significance

  195. of this abiding relationship with Christ,

  196. abiding in His love.

  197. And we know this is important

  198. because John,

  199. this beloved apostle,

  200. actually deals with the church of Ephesus

  201. in Revelation chapter 2,

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  202. and it's clear that this church

  203. had forgotten the significance

  204. of what Paul was telling them.

  205. Jesus, through the gospel writer John,

  206. says this in Revelation chapter 2

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  207. about this church.

  208. I know your works,

  209. your toil,

  210. your patient endurance,

  211. and how you cannot bear

  212. with those who are evil,

  213. but have tested those

  214. who call themselves apostles

  215. and are not,

  216. and have found them to be false.

  217. All sounds good on the surface.

  218. I know you are enduring patiently

  219. and bearing up for my namesake

  220. and have not grown weary.

  221. Still very good.

  222. But, he says,

  223. I have this against you,

  224. that you have abandoned

  225. the love you had at first.

  226. Somehow in all of their orthodoxy,

  227. somehow in all of their purity of doctrine,

  228. they had forgotten the significance

  229. of this abiding relationship

  230. with Christ,

  231. abiding in his love.

  232. So whatever this is

  233. that we need to know

  234. about abiding in the love

  235. is foundational for everything

  236. in the Christian life.

  237. It stands before obedience.

  238. It stands even before relationships

  239. with our brothers and sisters.

  240. It stands before our mission.

  241. But what is it?

  242. And how do I obtain it?

  243. I'd like to suggest

  244. that the way to nurture

  245. this abiding relationship

  246. with Christ,

  247. abiding in the love of Christ,

  248. is for us

  249. to put away other loves

  250. and to be filled up

  251. with the love of God.

  252. Clearly, Jesus

  253. says in verse 9,

  254. as the Father has loved me,

  255. so have I loved you.

  256. Jesus himself

  257. set the model

  258. of drinking

  259. at the well

  260. of the Father's love

  261. so that he could pour out

  262. the love of God

  263. for his disciples.

  264. We see throughout

  265. the course of

  266. the Gospel of John

  267. that Jesus himself

  268. had been ministered to

  269. by the love of the Father.

  270. And as a result

  271. of being ministered to

  272. by the love of the Father,

  273. was able to dispense

  274. that love

  275. on the people

  276. that he was surrounded with.

  277. So,

  278. how do we pursue

  279. an abiding relationship

  280. with Christ?

  281. Like everything else,

  282. we have to develop

  283. a taste for it.

  284. You have to develop

  285. a taste

  286. for the love of Christ

  287. that is sweeter

  288. and better

  289. than any other love.

  290. And I would suggest

  291. that you do that

  292. in a similar way

  293. that you do anything else.

  294. That if you're on a diet

  295. and you're getting rid

  296. of salty foods

  297. or sweet foods,

  298. you do that

  299. by immersing yourself

  300. in the diet

  301. and learning to enjoy

  302. those new foods.

  303. If you are trying

  304. to become more fit

  305. and just be more physically fit

  306. in terms of endurance,

  307. you go and you may start

  308. by walking

  309. and then you'll go

  310. into running

  311. and you'll develop

  312. an enjoyment

  313. for the exercise

  314. that overcomes the pain.

  315. Similarly,

  316. when we develop

  317. a taste for God

  318. that overcomes

  319. other tastes,

  320. even a taste for family

  321. or a taste for jobs

  322. or a taste for hobbies

  323. or leisure,

  324. I think one way

  325. for us to do that

  326. is to lay aside

  327. good things

  328. so that we can enjoy

  329. the best things

  330. in God.

  331. And I think fasting

  332. is one way for us

  333. to begin to nurture

  334. a love for Christ

  335. and to enjoy

  336. love of Christ.

  337. Fasting is a way

  338. for us to demonstrate

  339. that God has

  340. our attention.

  341. we sing,

  342. tune my heart

  343. to sing your praise,

  344. to sing your grace.

  345. It is the posture

  346. of our heart

  347. to lay aside

  348. for a time

  349. other enjoyments,

  350. other pleasures

  351. for us

  352. to sit

  353. and to bask

  354. in the encouragement

  355. and the love

  356. of Christ.

  357. John Piper

  358. puts it this way,

  359. he says,

  360. fasting

  361. is our way

  362. to express

  363. our deep longing

  364. for God,

  365. our supreme

  366. dependence

  367. and to look

  368. to Him

  369. for further direction,

  370. greater presence

  371. and fuller taste

  372. for Him.

  373. The greatest enemy

  374. of hunger

  375. for God

  376. is not poison

  377. but the apple pie.

  378. The greatest

  379. adversary

  380. of love

  381. to God

  382. is not

  383. His enemies

  384. but His gifts.

  385. and the most

  386. deadly appetites

  387. are not

  388. for the poison

  389. of evil

  390. but for the simplest

  391. pleasures of earth.

  392. For when these

  393. replace an appetite

  394. for God

  395. Himself,

  396. the idolatry

  397. is scarcely

  398. recognizable

  399. and almost

  400. incurable.

  401. Do you understand?

  402. we fill

  403. ourselves

  404. up

  405. with the good

  406. gifts of God

  407. that

  408. take up

  409. the space

  410. for the

  411. best

  412. things of God

  413. Himself.

  414. We fill up

  415. our moments

  416. and our days

  417. with good

  418. activities,

  419. even the kinds

  420. of things

  421. that God

  422. has commanded

  423. us to do.

  424. Good things

  425. that cover up

  426. and cover over

  427. the best things

  428. that enjoying

  429. who God

  430. is

  431. and saturating

  432. our lives

  433. in the love

  434. of Christ.

  435. Finding that

  436. He is sufficient,

  437. finding that

  438. He is able

  439. to provide

  440. comfort,

  441. that He is able

  442. to meet our

  443. needs,

  444. that He is

  445. better than

  446. that sport

  447. or that good

  448. thing that you

  449. enjoy.

  450. Setting it

  451. aside for a

  452. time so that

  453. you can

  454. just appreciate

  455. and treasure

  456. Christ.

  457. I don't know

  458. if you've

  459. ever gone

  460. for an

  461. extended period

  462. of time

  463. in fasting

  464. and putting

  465. aside food,

  466. but let me

  467. tell you,

  468. it's a little

  469. scary just to

  470. think about

  471. it as a

  472. possibility.

  473. And if you're

  474. anything like

  475. me,

  476. there's a number

  477. of good reasons

  478. not to have

  479. that exercise.

  480. Like,

  481. I've got to

  482. work today.

  483. How am I

  484. going to have

  485. the energy

  486. that I need

  487. to carry

  488. on the

  489. duties of

  490. my day,

  491. whether I'm

  492. a mom or

  493. whether I'm

  494. an employee or

  495. all the

  496. pressures that

  497. exist on my

  498. life.

  499. And yet,

  500. Piper goes

  501. on to say,

  502. the strongest,

  503. most mature

  504. Christians I

  505. have ever

  506. met are the

  507. hungriest for

  508. God.

  509. It might seem

  510. that those who

  511. eat most would

  512. be least hungry,

  513. but that's

  514. not the way

  515. it works

  516. with an

  517. inexhaustible

  518. fountain,

  519. an infinite

  520. feast,

  521. and a

  522. glorious

  523. Lord.

  524. The more

  525. deeply you

  526. walk with

  527. Christ,

  528. the hungrier

  529. you get

  530. for Christ.

  531. I would

  532. like to

  533. suggest

  534. that the

  535. discipline of

  536. fasting that

  537. is so elusive

  538. for us as

  539. people may

  540. very well be

  541. the very thing

  542. that stands

  543. in the way

  544. of us

  545. enjoying and

  546. savoring this

  547. abiding love

  548. of Christ.

  549. Letting it

  550. thrive,

  551. letting it be

  552. nurtured,

  553. letting it grow

  554. in our life.

  555. I would

  556. encourage us

  557. to consider

  558. the significance

  559. of fasting,

  560. of putting away

  561. other loves

  562. so that you

  563. can revel

  564. and marvel

  565. at the love

  566. of Christ

  567. and see that

  568. he is able

  569. and sufficient

  570. to meet

  571. every need.

  572. second,

  573. we find

  574. here as we

  575. continue to

  576. move on

  577. in verse 12,

  578. it says,

  579. this is my

  580. commandment

  581. that you

  582. love one

  583. another as

  584. I have

  585. loved you.

  586. We find

  587. that we are

  588. not only

  589. cherished by

  590. Christ,

  591. we find that

  592. we are

  593. commanded

  594. to love.

  595. We are

  596. commanded

  597. to love.

  598. This is my

  599. commandment

  600. that you

  601. love one

  602. another.

  603. Now,

  604. this ought

  605. to sound

  606. really familiar

  607. to us

  608. as we

  609. started our

  610. year and

  611. as we

  612. set forth

  613. the initiative

  614. of the

  615. art of

  616. neighboring,

  617. we talked

  618. about the

  619. significance

  620. of loving

  621. the Lord

  622. your God

  623. with all

  624. your heart

  625. and soul

  626. and mind

  627. and loving

  628. your neighbor

  629. as yourself.

  630. Now,

  631. the gospel

  632. writer John

  633. doesn't mention

  634. that those

  635. commands

  636. anywhere in

  637. his gospel

  638. record and

  639. yet here

  640. in these

  641. final moments

  642. he addresses

  643. the significance

  644. of love

  645. to his

  646. disciples

  647. and they

  648. stand here

  649. at the

  650. forefront.

  651. Loving

  652. God leads

  653. to loving

  654. one another.

  655. You want

  656. a fruitful

  657. life?

  658. Abide in

  659. Christ's

  660. love.

  661. Plug in

  662. to true

  663. love.

  664. It will

  665. change you.

  666. You will

  667. become a

  668. channel for

  669. the love

  670. that Christ

  671. has poured

  672. into your

  673. life and

  674. it will

  675. flow out

  676. everywhere

  677. you go.

  678. He mentions

  679. here love

  680. for one

  681. another.

  682. Almost as

  683. many as

  684. 60 times

  685. throughout the

  686. New Testament

  687. we find the

  688. significance

  689. of love

  690. for one

  691. another.

  692. We find the

  693. significance

  694. of our

  695. relationship

  696. within the

  697. body of

  698. Christ.

  699. We find

  700. various

  701. commands

  702. like we

  703. are to

  704. pray for

  705. one another.

  706. We are to

  707. bear one

  708. another's

  709. burdens.

  710. We are to

  711. sing to

  712. one another

  713. and comfort

  714. one another.

  715. Confess our

  716. faults to

  717. one another.

  718. Prefer one

  719. another.

  720. Be devoted

  721. to one

  722. another.

  723. Forgive one

  724. another.

  725. In order

  726. for us to

  727. express the

  728. love of

  729. God, it

  730. has to

  731. happen as

  732. we are in

  733. community with

  734. one another.

  735. God calls

  736. us to this

  737. kind of life.

  738. It pours out

  739. on the people

  740. that God

  741. has communicated

  742. his love to

  743. and it will

  744. be shared

  745. amongst

  746. those people.

  747. The love

  748. of Christ

  749. and the

  750. spirit of

  751. Christ

  752. create

  753. harmony

  754. within

  755. the body

  756. of Christ.

  757. That's how

  758. it works.

  759. And Jesus

  760. gives us a

  761. real practical

  762. example of

  763. how that

  764. plays out

  765. in verse

  766. 13.

  767. He says,

  768. Greater

  769. love has

  770. no one

  771. than this,

  772. that someone

  773. lay down

  774. his life

  775. for his

  776. friends.

  777. Again,

  778. Christ is

  779. the perfect

  780. illustration.

  781. In just

  782. a few

  783. hours from

  784. this point

  785. in Jesus'

  786. conversation

  787. with his

  788. disciples,

  789. he would

  790. do that

  791. very thing.

  792. He would

  793. lay down

  794. his life

  795. for his

  796. disciples.

  797. Lay down

  798. his life

  799. for the

  800. world.

  801. He was

  802. calling his

  803. disciples to

  804. the same

  805. kind of

  806. love.

  807. He's calling

  808. his followers

  809. to the same

  810. kind of

  811. love.

  812. The ultimate

  813. expression of

  814. love in

  815. being willing

  816. to lay

  817. down your

  818. very life

  819. love for

  820. the people

  821. who are

  822. part of

  823. the body

  824. of Christ.

  825. And we

  826. can talk

  827. about this

  828. ultimate

  829. example of

  830. love,

  831. but certainly

  832. if this is

  833. the epitome

  834. of love,

  835. certainly it

  836. should be

  837. easier for

  838. us to

  839. love in

  840. the spaces

  841. in between,

  842. right?

  843. In our

  844. sharing with

  845. one another.

  846. In our

  847. forgiving of

  848. one another.

  849. in our

  850. preferring of

  851. one another.

  852. In being

  853. willing to

  854. see their

  855. preferences in

  856. deferring to

  857. them.

  858. In not

  859. harboring

  860. bitterness.

  861. In not

  862. speaking evil.

  863. In not

  864. demanding our

  865. way.

  866. All of

  867. these ways

  868. for us to

  869. demonstrate

  870. this love

  871. of laying

  872. down our

  873. life for

  874. our brothers.

  875. for one

  876. another.

  877. We may

  878. also talk

  879. about laying

  880. down our

  881. preferences and

  882. serving behind

  883. the scenes.

  884. We might

  885. talk about

  886. laying down

  887. our agenda

  888. to make a

  889. hospital visit

  890. or making

  891. a meal for

  892. someone who

  893. is in

  894. need.

  895. We might

  896. talk about

  897. laying down

  898. our comfort

  899. to reach

  900. out, to

  901. talk to

  902. that person

  903. that you've

  904. seen for

  905. so many

  906. weeks and

  907. maybe even

  908. years here at

  909. the church,

  910. but you've

  911. never reached

  912. out and

  913. gotten to

  914. know them

  915. personally.

  916. What do we

  917. need to do

  918. to lay

  919. down our

  920. life for

  921. the sake

  922. of loving

  923. the people

  924. that God

  925. has put

  926. right in

  927. front of

  928. us?

  929. Are you

  930. a friend

  931. of Christ?

  932. It will

  933. show up in

  934. the way

  935. that you

  936. love others.

  937. Moving on

  938. now to

  939. verse 14.

  940. It says,

  941. You are my

  942. friends if

  943. you do what

  944. I command

  945. you.

  946. No longer

  947. do I call

  948. you servants

  949. for the

  950. servant does

  951. not know

  952. what his

  953. master is

  954. doing, but

  955. I have

  956. called you

  957. friends.

  958. For all

  959. that I

  960. have heard

  961. from my

  962. father I

  963. have made

  964. known to

  965. you.

  966. You are

  967. called his

  968. friends.

  969. Now this

  970. was a

  971. revolutionary

  972. concept for

  973. the disciples.

  974. The disciples

  975. who knew

  976. themselves to

  977. be servants,

  978. who had been

  979. called the

  980. servants of

  981. God.

  982. And not

  983. just any

  984. servant, but

  985. the word in

  986. the Greek is

  987. actually the

  988. word doulos,

  989. or the word

  990. for slave.

  991. It was the

  992. word for

  993. submission.

  994. It was the

  995. word for

  996. total surrender.

  997. It was the

  998. word of

  999. conformity to

  1000. the master,

  1001. of following

  1002. his orders,

  1003. and doing

  1004. what he

  1005. expects.

  1006. And Jesus

  1007. moves them

  1008. from this

  1009. position of

  1010. submission and

  1011. surrender to

  1012. a position of

  1013. friendship.

  1014. Now this is

  1015. not to

  1016. suppose that

  1017. they are now

  1018. somehow equal

  1019. with God,

  1020. but to

  1021. demonstrate

  1022. their unique

  1023. function as

  1024. partnering with

  1025. God in this

  1026. special role that

  1027. he has called

  1028. them to.

  1029. The privilege of

  1030. representing God

  1031. in the earth.

  1032. Throughout the

  1033. Old Testament,

  1034. we see examples

  1035. of how

  1036. Moses and

  1037. Nehemiah

  1038. prayed about

  1039. the people of

  1040. Israel as being

  1041. servants or

  1042. slaves of God.

  1043. And now Jesus

  1044. is helping his

  1045. disciples to

  1046. understand that

  1047. not only are

  1048. they disciples,

  1049. which is a

  1050. notch up from

  1051. being a

  1052. servant,

  1053. but they are

  1054. even called to

  1055. be a friend

  1056. of his.

  1057. And as

  1058. friends,

  1059. God has

  1060. let them

  1061. in on

  1062. this mystery

  1063. of the

  1064. word of

  1065. the Father

  1066. to them.

  1067. Jesus has

  1068. opened the

  1069. floodgates of

  1070. knowledge,

  1071. the knowledge

  1072. of God

  1073. to his

  1074. disciples.

  1075. It's

  1076. staggering to

  1077. consider that

  1078. every word

  1079. that was

  1080. uttered by

  1081. Christ was

  1082. given first

  1083. and foremost

  1084. by the

  1085. Father to

  1086. those to

  1087. whom Jesus

  1088. was speaking.

  1089. we see that

  1090. in John

    John 8:26

  1091. chapter 8

  1092. verse 26

  1093. it says,

  1094. I have many

  1095. things to

  1096. say and

  1097. to judge

  1098. concerning you,

  1099. but he

  1100. who sent

  1101. me is

  1102. true,

  1103. and I

  1104. speak to

  1105. the world

  1106. those things

  1107. which I

  1108. heard from

  1109. him.

  1110. Jesus

  1111. communicated

  1112. the very

  1113. words of

  1114. the Father

  1115. to his

  1116. disciples and

  1117. to the

  1118. people he

  1119. was speaking

  1120. to.

  1121. This was

  1122. the revelation

  1123. of God

  1124. to let

  1125. them in

  1126. on who

  1127. God was

  1128. and to

  1129. fill them

  1130. up with

  1131. a knowledge

  1132. of God

  1133. that would

  1134. help them

  1135. to come

  1136. to a

  1137. fuller and

  1138. deeper

  1139. love for

  1140. him.

  1141. It's going

  1142. to lead

  1143. them to

  1144. a new

  1145. relationship,

  1146. help to

  1147. nurture

  1148. this love

  1149. for Christ

  1150. and love

  1151. for God

  1152. through

  1153. revelation.

  1154. God had

  1155. privileged

  1156. these people

  1157. by helping

  1158. them to

  1159. come into

  1160. the know,

  1161. to be

  1162. part of

  1163. the mystery

  1164. that Paul

  1165. refers to.

  1166. They were

  1167. people who

  1168. were called

  1169. friends,

  1170. friends because

  1171. they were

  1172. part of

  1173. the revelation

  1174. of God.

  1175. And finally,

  1176. as we move

  1177. to verses

  1178. 16 and

  1179. 17,

  1180. we see that

  1181. they were

  1182. chosen to

  1183. fulfill

  1184. his

  1185. purpose.

  1186. Verse 16

  1187. says,

  1188. you did

  1189. not choose

  1190. me,

  1191. but I

  1192. chose you

  1193. and appointed

  1194. you that

  1195. you should

  1196. go and

  1197. bear fruit

  1198. and that

  1199. your fruit

  1200. should abide.

  1201. This word

  1202. for chosen

  1203. is the

  1204. word for

  1205. God's

  1206. work in

  1207. a life

  1208. of selecting

  1209. them out.

  1210. It was an

  1211. active process

  1212. of God

  1213. to choose

  1214. them out

  1215. of the

  1216. crowd

  1217. and to

  1218. set them

  1219. apart

  1220. for a

  1221. special

  1222. mission.

  1223. So we

  1224. have seen

  1225. from this

  1226. text,

  1227. it answers

  1228. the question

  1229. of origination.

  1230. Whose

  1231. mission are

  1232. we talking

  1233. about?

  1234. Who is

  1235. going to

  1236. get the

  1237. credit?

  1238. Who is

  1239. adequate for

  1240. this job?

  1241. How will

  1242. we have the

  1243. staying power

  1244. for what

  1245. we're called

  1246. to do?

  1247. We'll be

  1248. able to do

  1249. this because

  1250. we understand

  1251. that Christ

  1252. is the

  1253. source.

  1254. Christ is

  1255. the life

  1256. source and

  1257. Christ is

  1258. the love

  1259. source for

  1260. us in

  1261. terms of

  1262. accomplishing the

  1263. objectives that

  1264. he's called

  1265. us to

  1266. fulfill.

  1267. So why go

  1268. and bear

  1269. fruit?

  1270. We go and

  1271. bear fruit

  1272. because it's

  1273. a representation

  1274. of our

  1275. God.

  1276. It is

  1277. the

  1278. channel,

  1279. the

  1280. source of

  1281. love that

  1282. comes to

  1283. us from

  1284. Christ

  1285. shows up

  1286. in the

  1287. world.

  1288. I like

  1289. how John

  1290. Piper puts

  1291. it.

  1292. He says

  1293. mission is

  1294. not the

  1295. ultimate goal

  1296. of the

  1297. church.

  1298. Worship

  1299. is.

  1300. Missions

  1301. exist because

  1302. worship

  1303. doesn't.

  1304. Worship

  1305. is the

  1306. ultimate,

  1307. not

  1308. missions.

  1309. Because God

  1310. is ultimate,

  1311. not man.

  1312. Worship

  1313. therefore is

  1314. the fuel

  1315. and goal

  1316. of missions.

  1317. It is the

  1318. goal of

  1319. missions because

  1320. in missions

  1321. we simply

  1322. aim to

  1323. bring the

  1324. nations into

  1325. the white

  1326. hot enjoyment

  1327. of God's

  1328. glory.

  1329. Passion

  1330. for God

  1331. in worship

  1332. precedes the

  1333. offer of

  1334. God in

  1335. preaching.

  1336. You cannot

  1337. commend what

  1338. you do not

  1339. cherish.

  1340. And the

  1341. more we

  1342. come to

  1343. bask in

  1344. the glow

  1345. of the

  1346. love of

  1347. Christ,

  1348. the more

  1349. it will

  1350. propel us

  1351. into the

  1352. world to

  1353. demonstrate

  1354. the love

  1355. of Christ

  1356. to the

  1357. world.

  1358. You can't

  1359. commend what

  1360. you do not

  1361. cherish.

  1362. Do you

  1363. cherish

  1364. Christ?

  1365. Are you

  1366. caught up

  1367. with the

  1368. love of

  1369. Christ

  1370. today?

  1371. If you

  1372. are,

  1373. then it

  1374. will lead

  1375. to

  1376. verse 17,

  1377. which is

  1378. where Jesus

  1379. ends this

  1380. portion.

  1381. These

  1382. things I

  1383. command you

  1384. so that

  1385. you will

  1386. love one

  1387. another.

  1388. How does

  1389. that happen?

  1390. Well, it

  1391. doesn't happen

  1392. because of

  1393. duty.

  1394. It happens

  1395. because you

  1396. have been

  1397. filled up

  1398. with love,

  1399. and so what

  1400. you have to

  1401. give is the

  1402. love of

  1403. Christ to

  1404. the world.

  1405. Are you

  1406. full?

  1407. Are you

  1408. abiding in

  1409. the love of

  1410. Christ?

  1411. Christ,

  1412. and if

  1413. so,

  1414. it will

  1415. lead to

  1416. a love

  1417. for the

  1418. world.

  1419. Let's

  1420. pray.

  1421. Lord, we

  1422. thank you

  1423. for the

  1424. love of

  1425. Christ.

  1426. This

  1427. familiar

  1428. concept that

  1429. is so

  1430. hard for

  1431. us to

  1432. miss.

  1433. We talk

  1434. about it

  1435. almost every

  1436. week.

  1437. We sing

  1438. about it

  1439. in our

  1440. songs and

  1441. in our

  1442. worship.

  1443. We hear

  1444. about it

  1445. on the

  1446. radio.

  1447. it has

  1448. become so

  1449. familiar, but

  1450. God, I

  1451. pray that

  1452. you would

  1453. bring us

  1454. to the

  1455. point of

  1456. enjoying the

  1457. love of

  1458. Christ in

  1459. a way that

  1460. we have

  1461. never enjoyed

  1462. it before.

  1463. God, I

  1464. pray that

  1465. you would

  1466. move us

  1467. to the

  1468. place of

  1469. setting aside

  1470. other loves

  1471. for a

  1472. time so

  1473. that we

  1474. can begin

  1475. to appreciate

  1476. the greatest

  1477. love, the

  1478. love of

  1479. Christ, who

  1480. is sufficient

  1481. for all

  1482. things,

  1483. sufficient to

  1484. meet our

  1485. needs, sufficient

  1486. to comfort

  1487. us in our

  1488. hurts, sufficient

  1489. to deal with

  1490. our anxieties,

  1491. sufficient to

  1492. bring peace in

  1493. the midst of

  1494. the storm,

  1495. sufficient to

  1496. help us in

  1497. our relationships,

  1498. sufficient to

  1499. encourage us in

  1500. the midst of

  1501. hard things.

  1502. Lord,

  1503. wherever we

  1504. find ourselves

  1505. this morning,

  1506. I pray that

  1507. you would

  1508. help us to

  1509. connect into

  1510. this wonderful

  1511. love of

  1512. Christ.

  1513. And as we

  1514. fill our

  1515. lives up with

  1516. an understanding

  1517. and an

  1518. appreciation for

  1519. the love of

  1520. Christ, Lord, I

  1521. pray that you

  1522. would help us

  1523. to become

  1524. conduits of

  1525. that love to

  1526. the world

  1527. around us,

  1528. wherever we

  1529. are.

  1530. Whether we're

  1531. in the grocery

  1532. store, whether

  1533. we're getting

  1534. our car fixed

  1535. at the

  1536. mechanic,

  1537. whether we're

  1538. stopped by the

  1539. side of the

  1540. road, wherever

  1541. we might be,

  1542. God, I pray that

  1543. you would help

  1544. us to be so

  1545. full of the

  1546. love of Christ

  1547. that we see

  1548. opportunities to

  1549. convey that love

  1550. to the people

  1551. you put in our

  1552. path.

  1553. God, we praise

  1554. you for your

  1555. enduring love.

  1556. Thank you for

  1557. forgiveness.

  1558. Thank you for

  1559. patience.

  1560. Thank you that

  1561. even when we

  1562. fail day after

  1563. day, there is

  1564. new mercies.

  1565. We praise you,

  1566. Lord, in Jesus'

  1567. name.

  1568. Amen.
