  1. As we watch that video, I trust that two things come to the surface.

  2. ! One is persecution of Christians around the world is a reality.

  3. ! It is overwhelming almost to consider how many of our brothers and sisters around the world are experiencing suffering and persecution

  4. ! at the hands of those who hate and hate the world.

  5. Hate God and hate the Father. Hate Jesus.

  6. It's estimated that as many as 75% of the world's population are experiencing deliberate and hostile persecution day by day.

  7. So we are, as Americans, in the minority really, as it relates to kind of being removed a bit from the persecution that the rest of the world seems to face.

  8. Secondly, what I trust and hope is that what we're seeing in the world will help to spur us on to be praying for our brothers and sisters wherever they might be.

  9. That God would continue to encourage and comfort and strengthen them to help them to have endurance, to help them to suffer well for the sake of Christ.

  10. And then for us, as we consider as a nation, the coming persecution that is inevitable at some point down the road.

  11. We are experiencing some latent forms of persecution, perhaps in your workplace or in the community.

  12. It certainly has begun to come to the forefront, even in the church and the opposition that churches face.

  13. But more is coming, and we can certainly expect to see more of it as the time continues.

  14. I want to draw our attention this morning to this theme.

  15. I'm sure this is a theme that we all are just really looking forward to studying today.

  16. Hated like the Father.

  17. Now, over the past couple of weeks, we've dealt with something that is something that we want to hear.

  18. We like to hear.

  19. We like to hear about being loved by the Father.

  20. We like to hear about being friends of the Father.

  21. We don't particularly like to hear about the fact that we're also going to be hated.

  22. Like the Father.

  23. But in this expression, in our study this morning,

  24. there is nothing that will reinforce God's love for you,

  25. and nothing that will reinforce God's love for the world through you,

  26. like the opposition that you're going to face from the people who are adamant and hostile towards the gospel.

  27. The hatred that you will experience as a believer,

  28. the hostility and the suffering and persecution that you may experience as a believer,

  29. will magnify the testimony of Christ more in this world than anything else that you could possibly experience.

  30. The suffering that you will endure, perhaps, as a believer,

  31. will propel the gospel and will fill your life with the strength of the Spirit

  32. like nothing else that you will experience as a believer.

  33. So perhaps, for all that we enjoy talking about the love of Christ

  34. and being friends of Christ,

  35. for as wonderful as that may be,

  36. perhaps for us,

  37. as those who desire to have a radiant testimony in the world,

  38. maybe there's no better truth for us

  39. than to know that we will be hated just like our Father.

  40. There is a sense of identity.

  41. There is a sense of likeness.

  42. There is a sense of oneness that can only come

  43. as we are willing to walk in the footsteps of Christ.

  44. And as we are willing to walk in the footsteps of Christ,

  45. we can expect that we will experience the journey of Christ,

  46. who, having encouraged His followers, His disciples in particular,

  47. what does He say?

  48. He encourages them to be willing to take up their cross daily and follow Him.

  49. There is a privilege, I might say,

  50. of being so unified with the Father

  51. that we experience the things that the Father experiences,

  52. that Jesus experienced on behalf of the Father,

  53. the antagonism, the opposition that comes to those

  54. who follow after the Father's pattern

  55. and similarly follow after the words and the works of Christ.

  56. What will be the stabilizing force for us as believers?

  57. Well, it will be the truths that have gone before.

  58. The truths that have been filling our discussion the last several weeks

  59. as Jesus, in these final hours,

  60. these final moments with His disciples

  61. before the inevitability of the cross,

  62. wants to help them be anchored

  63. in the stability of knowing that Christ loves them.

  64. That will be the stabilizing force.

  65. That will be the thing that will move them

  66. through the suffering that they will certainly experience in the future.

  67. And those who are satisfied with God,

  68. those who drink Him in through genuine and sustained fellowship,

  69. it will lead to a worthy life

  70. that sets you apart from your peers,

  71. from your co-workers,

  72. from your classmates,

  73. and from your community.

  74. It will put God on display.

  75. Isn't that what you want this morning?

  76. To make much of God,

  77. to put Him on display,

  78. to make His love look so satisfying

  79. that nothing else can shake you,

  80. that nothing else can break you,

  81. that nothing else can shatter this relationship with Him.

  82. That's when the gospel becomes compelling,

  83. is when the love of Christ is so satisfying

  84. that it carries us through whatever we may face.

  85. There is a sweetness

  86. and a gentleness

  87. and a joy about the believer's life

  88. that is not only unmistakable,

  89. it's unexplainable.

  90. And that's what makes your life look remarkably familiar.

  91. You begin to look like Jesus.

  92. And that's the desire of our life.

  93. Love for Christ will guide your affection

  94. and your loyalty.

  95. Love for Christ will show what really matters.

  96. And it will carry you through difficult times

  97. when you're hated like the Father.

  98. So turn with me, if you would,

  99. to John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  100. We're going to be taking up

  101. a significant portion of Scripture this morning

  102. from John chapter 15

    John 15 chapter mention

  103. to chapter 16, verse 4.

  104. We're going to begin in 15, verse 18

  105. and moving through this portion of Scripture

  106. that deals with this theme

  107. of being hated like the Father.

  108. There are a couple of truths,

  109. or there are four truths

  110. I want us to be reminded of this morning.

  111. Two that relate to the world

  112. and two that relate to the believer.

  113. There are things that you can expect.

  114. There are things that Jesus promises

  115. in these final moments with His disciples.

  116. Things that they will see

  117. and that will happen for them.

  118. Things that they will experience.

  119. Let me read for us verses 18 to 21,

  120. and we'll begin with this point,

  121. the certainty of the world's disdain.

  122. The certainty of the world's disdain.

  123. Let me read these verses for us.

  124. Beginning in verse 18.

  125. It says,

  126. If the world hates you,

  127. know that it has hated me

  128. before it hated you.

  129. If you were of the world,

  130. the world would love you as its own.

  131. But because you are not of the world,

  132. but I chose you out of the world,

  133. therefore, the world hates you.

  134. Remember the word that I said to you,

  135. a servant is not greater than his master.

  136. If they persecuted me,

  137. they will also persecute you.

  138. If they kept my word,

  139. they will also keep yours.

  140. But these things they will do to you

  141. on account of my name,

  142. because they do not know Him who sent me.

  143. You can expect as a believer,

  144. you can expect as one

  145. who is a follower of Christ,

  146. the world will not appreciate your life.

  147. There will be a disdain.

  148. There will be opposition.

  149. There will be a sense of hatred towards you

  150. because you have a life that emulates Jesus.

  151. A life that emulates the Father.

  152. But it seems a little strange, doesn't it?

  153. Doesn't it seem a little strange

  154. that the person who would be

  155. the conduit of love,

  156. the person who would emulate

  157. the compassion of Christ,

  158. a person who would seek to meet needs

  159. and to address issues around you

  160. with sensitivity and kindness

  161. and compassion,

  162. be the recipient of hostility?

  163. Seems a little strange, does it not?

  164. From the life source of Jesus

  165. comes compassion that flows from Christ

  166. and reaps a harvest of love in us.

  167. We saw that last week.

  168. And it's almost unimaginable

  169. that the world,

  170. being recipients of such magnanimous love,

  171. would turn on the hand

  172. that essentially feeds them

  173. and seek to consume them instead.

  174. But that's how it was with Christ.

  175. That's how it was with Christ's followers.

  176. That's how it's been through history.

  177. We've seen the accounts of believers

  178. throughout history

  179. who have suffered injustice.

  180. And it seems inconceivable

  181. that the one who came to Galilee

  182. and Judea

  183. and virtually rid the entire land of disease,

  184. demonstrating compassion indiscriminately

  185. to Jewish leaders,

  186. to Samaritans,

  187. to those living in Galilee,

  188. to those who were Gentiles in Perea,

  189. even to officials in Rome.

  190. That Jesus,

  191. in demonstrating this kind of compassion,

  192. would be the recipient of hatred

  193. and ultimately be killed on the cross.

  194. Initially,

  195. the ministry of Jesus

  196. was met with overwhelming positive favor.

  197. We see that in John chapter 2

    John 2 chapter mention

  198. where it says that the ministry of Christ,

  199. it says,

  200. many believed in his name

  201. and saw the signs that he was doing.

  202. But it says,

  203. Jesus on his part

  204. did not entrust himself to them

  205. because he knew all people.

  206. He needed no one to bear witness about man

  207. for he himself knew what was in man.

  208. Jesus knew where this was headed.

  209. Jesus knew this was moving to the cross.

  210. Jesus knew the fickle hearts of the people

  211. that he was ministering to.

  212. He knew that ultimately

  213. the kindness and compassion of the Father

  214. would be met by hostility.

  215. It would be met with hatred

  216. and they would put him on the cross.

  217. And yet,

  218. he continued to love them to the end.

  219. The antagonism that Jesus experienced

  220. throughout his ministry

  221. was relentless.

  222. The Jewish leaders in particular

  223. hated his message.

  224. They hated his miracles.

  225. They hated his audacity

  226. to forgive sin.

  227. They hated that he exerted authority

  228. by cleansing the temple.

  229. They hated that he didn't keep their traditions.

  230. They hated that he confronted

  231. their hypocrisy.

  232. He hated that he hung out with sinners.

  233. They hated that he kept referring to God

  234. as his Father.

  235. They hated that the crowd

  236. was so enamored with him

  237. as a religious figure.

  238. But the biggest reason they hated him

  239. was because Jesus exposed

  240. the wickedness of their heart.

  241. In John chapter 7, verse 7,

    John 7:7

  242. Jesus says this,

  243. The world hates me

  244. because I testify about it

  245. that its works are evil.

  246. And for all the kindness and compassion

  247. of our Savior,

  248. and all the grace of God

  249. to identify the biggest hurdle

  250. in their life

  251. that was keeping them

  252. from experiencing the favor of God,

  253. their sin,

  254. even though he was kind,

  255. even though he leaned in,

  256. as we've been talking about

  257. in Sunday school,

  258. he leaned into their mess,

  259. was willing to love them

  260. in the midst of the difficulties

  261. and the sin of their life,

  262. and to lead them to deliverance,

  263. they didn't want to hear it.

  264. And being confronted with their sin,

  265. being exposed in the sight of God,

  266. they resented him

  267. and hated him

  268. and pushed him away.

  269. The same will be true of believers.

  270. Those of us who seek to echo

  271. and mirror the kind love

  272. of Christ for the world.

  273. Don't be surprised

  274. if the world hates you.

  275. It hated Christ as well.

  276. But as we look at this truth,

  277. we see the opposite truth

  278. taking shape in verse 19.

  279. Not only will the world hate you,

  280. but be warned

  281. if the world loves you.

  282. It says in verse 19,

  283. If you were of the world,

  284. the world would love you

  285. as its own.

  286. But because you are not of the world,

  287. but I chose you out of the world,

  288. therefore the world hates you.

  289. So don't seek

  290. the affection of the world.

  291. Don't look for their acceptance.

  292. Don't modify your language.

  293. Don't soften your convictions.

  294. Don't conceal your light.

  295. You have been called to be a light.

  296. Ephesians 5, 7-14.

  297. I would just encourage you,

  298. keep your finger in John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  299. Turn with me for this pertinent passage

  300. in Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  301. where Jesus begins to,

  302. or excuse me,

  303. God through the apostle Paul

  304. to the church of Ephesus,

  305. begins to describe

  306. what you as lights look like.

  307. Jesus says in his great sermon on the mount,

  308. You are the light of the world,

  309. a city set on the hill

  310. that cannot be hidden.

  311. Well, what does light do?

  312. We find what light does

  313. in Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  314. Beginning in verse 7,

  315. it says this,

  316. Therefore, do not become partakers with them,

  317. for at one time you were darkness,

  318. but now you are light in the Lord.

  319. Walk as children of the light,

  320. for the fruit of light is found

  321. in all that is good and right and true.

  322. And try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.

  323. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness,

  324. but instead expose them.

  325. For it is shameful even to speak of the things

  326. that they do in secret.

  327. But when anything is exposed by the light,

  328. it becomes visible.

  329. For anything that becomes visible is light.

  330. Therefore, it says,

  331. Awake, O sleeper,

  332. and to rise from the dead,

  333. and Christ will shine on you.

  334. But so often,

  335. I think we find ourselves,

  336. instead of shining the light of Christ

  337. in the world,

  338. we find ourselves

  339. looking for ways to conceal that light.

  340. Looking for ways

  341. to accommodate ourselves to the world

  342. by embracing their ideals

  343. in terms of the workplace

  344. and how to get ahead

  345. and the cutthroat culture

  346. that is so easy for us to adopt

  347. in order for us to get to the places

  348. we think we need to be

  349. in terms of promotion

  350. and advancement

  351. and income.

  352. We also find ourselves

  353. reinforcing their priorities

  354. when it comes to education

  355. and athletics

  356. and attractiveness

  357. and pursuit of the good life.

  358. We find ourselves

  359. bending to their pressure,

  360. silent about our testimony,

  361. a little afraid

  362. about the awkwardness

  363. of a situation

  364. when we let anyone know

  365. that we are Christians.

  366. we accommodate

  367. their preferences.

  368. Churches that take pride

  369. in certain musical forms

  370. that I've heard of even

  371. a church or two

  372. who have pretty much

  373. all secular music

  374. and very little

  375. that actually calls people

  376. to worship God

  377. for the sake of drawing the crowd

  378. so they can hear the gospel.

  379. Of course,

  380. there is acceptance

  381. of blatant sin in the church.

  382. There is an unwillingness

  383. for churches

  384. to deal with sin

  385. and confront sin head on

  386. and to lovingly address it

  387. for the sake

  388. of the soul

  389. of the individual

  390. who is involved

  391. in that lifestyle.

  392. We emulate their tactics.

  393. It relates to dealing

  394. with authority.

  395. We find ourselves,

  396. especially as a parent

  397. of children in school,

  398. I find myself at times

  399. resisting the urge

  400. of having that conversation

  401. with the teacher

  402. or taking it

  403. to the next level

  404. and talking to the principal

  405. because that teacher

  406. just couldn't get

  407. what I was trying

  408. to tell them.

  409. One thing I appreciated

  410. about my upbringing

  411. was I would come home

  412. with a complaint

  413. and my dad always

  414. took the teacher's side.

  415. It drove me bananas.

  416. But one thing it did

  417. was it reinforced

  418. the authority structures

  419. that God had put

  420. in my way

  421. to help me understand

  422. the significance

  423. of respecting

  424. the authority

  425. that God has for us.

  426. But we find ourselves

  427. emulating their tactics.

  428. We're going to take it

  429. to Capitol Hill.

  430. We find ourselves,

  431. instead of praying

  432. about issues,

  433. that we complain

  434. about issues.

  435. we make it public.

  436. We put it all over

  437. social media,

  438. whatever it takes

  439. to get the word out

  440. and get people on board

  441. instead of turning it over

  442. to God to deal with.

  443. And we are captured

  444. by their philosophies,

  445. philosophies of parenting,

  446. philosophies of family.

  447. We find ourselves

  448. not showing the light

  449. of Christ in that way.

  450. And we're made numb

  451. by the way

  452. they try to inculcate culture.

  453. The slow descent

  454. into tolerating

  455. and supporting

  456. their agenda

  457. as it relates

  458. to the movies we watch

  459. or the music

  460. that we listen to,

  461. the sporting events

  462. that we participate in.

  463. There is very little

  464. distinctiveness in us

  465. that would call people

  466. to the distinctiveness

  467. of our great God.

  468. No wonder why

  469. we aren't experiencing

  470. the pushback from culture

  471. because we look

  472. so much like the world.

  473. Jesus moves on

  474. in verse 20.

  475. Remember the word

  476. that I said to you.

  477. A servant is not greater

  478. than his master.

  479. If they persecuted me,

  480. they will persecute you.

  481. Does your life show

  482. the sweetness

  483. and the wonder

  484. of Jesus?

  485. Does it point

  486. to your master?

  487. Does it show

  488. his greatness?

  489. Does it put him

  490. on display?

  491. Not only his love

  492. for sinners,

  493. but the way

  494. to deal with sin.

  495. The answer

  496. for sin

  497. that comes

  498. through faith in Christ.

  499. Removing guilt

  500. and removing sin.

  501. Being cleansed

  502. by his life.

  503. Love for Christ

  504. will guide

  505. your affection

  506. and your loyalty.

  507. Love for Christ

  508. will show

  509. what really matters.

  510. Especially

  511. when the world

  512. disdains you.

  513. Jesus moves on.

  514. He moves on

  515. to helping

  516. his disciples

  517. understand

  518. that

  519. although the world

  520. may disdain them

  521. and hate them,

  522. there is

  523. an inevitable

  524. consequence.

  525. There will be

  526. judgment for them.

  527. The certainty,

  528. the second point,

  529. the certainty

  530. of the world's

  531. demise.

  532. The certainty

  533. of the world's

  534. demise.

  535. We see that here

  536. in verses 22

  537. to 25.

  538. Let me read this

  539. for us.

  540. If I had not

  541. come and spoken

  542. to them,

  543. they would not

  544. have been guilty

  545. of sin.

  546. But now they

  547. have no excuse

  548. for their sin.

  549. Whoever hates

  550. me hates

  551. my father also.

  552. If I had not

  553. done among them

  554. the works

  555. that no one

  556. else did,

  557. they would not

  558. be guilty

  559. of sin.

  560. But now they

  561. have seen

  562. and hated

  563. both me

  564. and my father.

  565. But the word

  566. that is written

  567. in their law

  568. must be fulfilled.

  569. They hated

  570. me without

  571. a cause.

  572. There will

  573. be judgment

  574. on the world.

  575. And one

  576. question that

  577. might come

  578. to the surface

  579. as you're

  580. considering

  581. why are

  582. there people

  583. who are

  584. in the camp

  585. of belief

  586. and individuals

  587. who are in

  588. the camp

  589. of those

  590. who do not

  591. believe,

  592. especially

  593. during Christ's

  594. day.

  595. Was something

  596. concealed from

  597. them?

  598. Was there

  599. a truth

  600. that they

  601. missed

  602. somehow?

  603. Did Jesus

  604. leave this

  605. crowd by the

  606. side and

  607. failed to

  608. address them

  609. and to deal

  610. with them

  611. appropriately?

  612. And we

  613. find that

  614. here in

  615. this group

  616. of verses

  617. that Jesus'

  618. ministry to

  619. them was

  620. just the same

  621. as his

  622. ministry to

  623. the disciples.

  624. They heard

  625. the same

  626. word.

  627. There was

  628. gracious

  629. revelation to

  630. them.

  631. The same

  632. revelation that

  633. the disciples

  634. received we

  635. saw as an

  636. expression of

  637. Christ's love

  638. for them.

  639. At the

  640. latter part

  641. of John

    John 15 chapter mention

  642. chapter 15

  643. and here in

  644. verse it

  645. says in

  646. verse 15,

  647. he has

  648. given them,

  649. I made

  650. known to

  651. you what

  652. was given

  653. to me by

  654. the Father.

  655. Revelation

  656. went to

  657. the disciples

  658. but revelation

  659. also went

  660. to those who

  661. refused to

  662. believe.

  663. The world

  664. is without

  665. excuse.

  666. And we

  667. have addressed

  668. this on

  669. numerous

  670. occasions.

  671. that the

  672. word that

  673. was communicated

  674. by Christ

  675. was word

  676. that was

  677. first directed

  678. by the

  679. Father.

  680. Perhaps

  681. standing at

  682. the forefront

  683. if we just

  684. turn back a

  685. couple of

  686. pages to

  687. John chapter

    John 12 chapter mention

  688. 12, we

  689. see this

  690. in verse

  691. 49.

  692. John

    John 12:49

  693. chapter 12

  694. verse 49

  695. says,

  696. For I

  697. have not

  698. spoken on

  699. my own

  700. authority,

  701. but the

  702. Father who

  703. has sent

  704. me has

  705. himself

  706. given me

  707. a commandment,

  708. what to

  709. say and

  710. what to

  711. speak.

  712. And some

  713. translations

  714. have what

  715. to say and

  716. how to

  717. say it.

  718. Jesus'

  719. life in

  720. ministry was

  721. so guided

  722. by the

  723. Father that

  724. not only the

  725. words that

  726. he spoke but

  727. the way in

  728. which he

  729. spoke those

  730. words were

  731. influenced by

  732. the Father's

  733. direction.

  734. And so to

  735. reject the

  736. message of

  737. Christ is

  738. to reject the

  739. message from

  740. the Father.

  741. Jesus says,

  742. Whoever hates

  743. me hates

  744. my Father

  745. as well.

  746. This is the

  747. epitome of

  748. rebellion.

  749. Hatred of

  750. God the

  751. Father.

  752. The God of

  753. the Jews

  754. was not the

  755. God of the

  756. Bible.

  757. Their God

  758. was a figure

  759. of their

  760. tradition.

  761. Their God

  762. was an image

  763. of their own

  764. making.

  765. And when

  766. they had

  767. their God

  768. right in

  769. front of

  770. them in

  771. full view

  772. speaking the

  773. words of

  774. the Father,

  775. they called

  776. him an

  777. imposter and

  778. they put him

  779. on the cross.

  780. The danger

  781. for us as

  782. we consider

  783. the words of

  784. Christ,

  785. will we

  786. accept the

  787. truths that

  788. Jesus has

  789. so clearly

  790. communicated to

  791. us in the

  792. word?

  793. Jesus was

  794. clear about

  795. his identity.

  796. Seven times

  797. in the

  798. Gospel of

  799. John he

  800. says,

  801. I am,

  802. and we

  803. have looked

  804. at them

  805. throughout the

  806. course of

  807. our study.

  808. I am the

  809. door.

  810. I am the

  811. good shepherd.

  812. I am the

  813. light of the

  814. world.

  815. I am the

  816. bread of

  817. life.

  818. I am the

  819. vine.

  820. I am the

  821. resurrection

  822. and the

  823. life.

  824. Jesus was

  825. the way to

  826. God.

  827. Jesus was

  828. God in

  829. the flesh.

  830. And if you

  831. don't have

  832. Christ,

  833. you don't

  834. have God.

  835. That was

  836. the message

  837. that came

  838. through loud

  839. and clear

  840. through the

  841. testimony of

  842. Jesus'

  843. words.

  844. Not only

  845. did Jesus

  846. say the

  847. words of

  848. the Father,

  849. but his

  850. words were

  851. confirmed through

  852. his works.

  853. And that

  854. comes next.

  855. We see that

  856. here in

  857. verse 24.

  858. If I had

  859. not done

  860. among them

  861. the works

  862. that no one

  863. else did,

  864. they would

  865. not be

  866. guilty.

  867. So not

  868. only are

  869. they condemned

  870. by rejecting

  871. the words

  872. of Christ,

  873. but they

  874. are rejecting

  875. him even

  876. in light of

  877. the works

  878. that he

  879. did,

  880. that authenticated

  881. him,

  882. that validated

  883. his ministry,

  884. that proved

  885. that he was

  886. the person

  887. he claimed

  888. to be.

  889. Jesus,

  890. in a

  891. confrontation

  892. with the

  893. Pharisees,

  894. back in

  895. John chapter

    John 10 chapter mention

  896. 10,

  897. alludes to

  898. this,

  899. speaks of

  900. this.

  901. He says

  902. in

  903. John

    John 10:25

  904. chapter

  905. 10,

  906. verse 25,

  907. they ask

  908. him the

  909. question,

  910. Jesus,

  911. okay now,

  912. tell us

  913. plainly,

  914. are you

  915. the Christ?

  916. And Jesus

  917. says,

  918. in verse

  919. 25,

  920. he says,

  921. I told

  922. you,

  923. and you

  924. do not

  925. believe.

  926. The works

  927. that I do

  928. in my

  929. Father's name

  930. bear testimony

  931. about me,

  932. but you

  933. do not

  934. believe

  935. because you

  936. are not

  937. part of

  938. my flock.

  939. Dropping

  940. down to

  941. verse 37,

  942. if I

  943. am not

  944. doing the

  945. works of

  946. my Father,

  947. then do

  948. not believe

  949. me.

  950. But if I

  951. do them,

  952. even though

  953. you do

  954. not believe

  955. me,

  956. believe the

  957. works,

  958. that you

  959. may know

  960. and understand

  961. that the

  962. Father is

  963. in me,

  964. and I

  965. am in

  966. the Father.

  967. The

  968. miracles

  969. of

  970. Jesus

  971. confirmed

  972. his

  973. identity.

  974. Jesus

  975. faithfully

  976. brought

  977. this

  978. truth

  979. to the

  980. forefront.

  981. And if

  982. you remember

  983. the story

  984. of the

  985. paralytic,

  986. the standing

  987. room only

  988. in this

  989. house that

  990. Jesus was

  991. ministering

  992. to,

  993. and then

  994. all of a

  995. sudden

  996. they see

  997. the rafters

  998. beginning to

  999. be removed

  1000. from the

  1001. ceiling,

  1002. and now

  1003. this figure

  1004. of an

  1005. individual

  1006. being lowered

  1007. down in

  1008. front of

  1009. Christ.

  1010. And Jesus

  1011. looks at

  1012. this man

  1013. on this

  1014. little

  1015. stretcher

  1016. and says,

  1017. your sins

  1018. are forgiven.

  1019. And the

  1020. Pharisees,

  1021. it says,

  1022. they grumbled

  1023. in their

  1024. heart,

  1025. who is

  1026. this person

  1027. who can

  1028. forgive sins?

  1029. Only God

  1030. can forgive

  1031. sins.

  1032. To which

  1033. Jesus says,

  1034. you're right.

  1035. So,

  1036. what's easier

  1037. to say?

  1038. your sins

  1039. are forgiven

  1040. or rise

  1041. and take

  1042. up your

  1043. bed and

  1044. walk.

  1045. And Jesus,

  1046. turning to

  1047. the man,

  1048. tells him,

  1049. rise,

  1050. take up

  1051. your bed

  1052. and walk.

  1053. The paralytic

  1054. gets up,

  1055. walks right

  1056. out of the

  1057. house,

  1058. and gives

  1059. testimony to

  1060. the fact

  1061. that Jesus

  1062. not only has

  1063. the words

  1064. of God,

  1065. Jesus shows

  1066. the work

  1067. of God

  1068. and confirms

  1069. that he

  1070. was God

  1071. himself.

  1072. And in

  1073. spite of

  1074. the great

  1075. show of

  1076. Jesus'

  1077. identity,

  1078. the clear

  1079. and unmistakable

  1080. fact that he

  1081. was God,

  1082. they still

  1083. refused

  1084. to acknowledge

  1085. him.

  1086. And as a

  1087. result,

  1088. Jesus talks

  1089. about,

  1090. in Matthew

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  1091. chapter 11,

  1092. his condemnation

  1093. on those

  1094. cities who

  1095. were so

  1096. faithfully

  1097. heard the

  1098. word and

  1099. yet still

  1100. rejected.

  1101. When the

  1102. world sees

  1103. confirmation

  1104. of Christ

  1105. in you,

  1106. through your

  1107. steadfast faith

  1108. and unwavering

  1109. joy,

  1110. it will

  1111. either lead

  1112. them to

  1113. Christ,

  1114. or will

  1115. lead them

  1116. to rebellion.

  1117. Do the

  1118. people in

  1119. this world

  1120. see the

  1121. testimony of

  1122. Christ playing

  1123. out in your

  1124. life?

  1125. Are you

  1126. an individual

  1127. who is so

  1128. full of

  1129. Christ that

  1130. it shows up

  1131. in the world?

  1132. Not only

  1133. through your

  1134. words,

  1135. but through

  1136. your works

  1137. that confirm

  1138. there's been

  1139. a transformation

  1140. in your

  1141. life.

  1142. That's what

  1143. will be the

  1144. mark of

  1145. helping them

  1146. to come to

  1147. terms with

  1148. the reality

  1149. of the

  1150. gospel.

  1151. Now we

  1152. move to

  1153. this next

  1154. promise.

  1155. It moves

  1156. from the

  1157. world and

  1158. now moves

  1159. to believers.

  1160. We see

  1161. in verses

  1162. 26 to 27

  1163. the certainty

  1164. of the

  1165. believer's

  1166. divine help.

  1167. The

  1168. certainty

  1169. of the

  1170. believer's

  1171. divine help.

  1172. Let me

  1173. read verses

  1174. 26 and

  1175. 27.

  1176. It says,

  1177. but when

  1178. the helper

  1179. comes,

  1180. whom I

  1181. will send

  1182. you from

  1183. the

  1184. father,

  1185. the spirit

  1186. of truth

  1187. who proceeds

  1188. from the

  1189. father,

  1190. he will

  1191. bear witness

  1192. about me.

  1193. And you

  1194. also will

  1195. bear witness

  1196. because you

  1197. have been

  1198. with me

  1199. from the

  1200. beginning.

  1201. This is the

  1202. third statement

  1203. in these

  1204. short few

  1205. moments of

  1206. time that

  1207. Jesus has

  1208. with his

  1209. disciples in

  1210. these final

  1211. hours of

  1212. drawing their

  1213. attention to

  1214. the promise

  1215. of the

  1216. spirit's

  1217. coming.

  1218. We see it

  1219. in John

    John 14:16

  1220. chapter 14

  1221. verse 16.

  1222. John 14

    John 14:26

  1223. verse 26.

  1224. We see it

  1225. here in this

  1226. verse in

  1227. chapter 15

  1228. 26 and

  1229. we'll see it

  1230. two more

  1231. times in

  1232. chapter 16.

  1233. Jesus is

  1234. interested and

  1235. wants to

  1236. encourage his

  1237. disciples with

  1238. the fact the

  1239. Holy Spirit is

  1240. coming.

  1241. Times may be

  1242. tough.

  1243. Suffering may

  1244. come.

  1245. Hardship may

  1246. confront you

  1247. but you

  1248. will have

  1249. help.

  1250. Help from

  1251. the Holy Spirit.

  1252. One commentator

  1253. puts it this

  1254. way.

  1255. The Holy Spirit's

  1256. primary ministry

  1257. to the lost

  1258. world is to

  1259. testify about

  1260. Jesus.

  1261. Let me say

  1262. that again.

  1263. The Holy Spirit's

  1264. primary ministry

  1265. to the lost

  1266. world is to

  1267. testify about

  1268. Jesus.

  1269. If your

  1270. words and

  1271. your life is

  1272. not dominated

  1273. by testimony

  1274. about Jesus

  1275. and what Jesus

  1276. has done for

  1277. you,

  1278. I would say

  1279. that we need

  1280. to take

  1281. caution.

  1282. we need to

  1283. ask God to

  1284. do that work

  1285. in our life

  1286. because if the

  1287. Spirit is

  1288. indwelling you,

  1289. it will show

  1290. up in giving

  1291. testimony about

  1292. Christ.

  1293. One of the

  1294. clear evidences

  1295. of the Spirit

  1296. in your life

  1297. is that you

  1298. will have a

  1299. message of

  1300. Christ.

  1301. It will not

  1302. only fuel

  1303. your passion

  1304. but it will

  1305. dominate your

  1306. speech or

  1307. your words

  1308. saturated in

  1309. the words of

  1310. Christ.

  1311. and do

  1312. your words

  1313. reflect the

  1314. expression or

  1315. the quality of

  1316. Christ's words.

  1317. We could go to

  1318. a number of

  1319. passages and

  1320. look at the

  1321. quality of

  1322. Christ's words

  1323. but I think

  1324. there are,

  1325. I wish we had

  1326. time to look at

  1327. three verses this

  1328. morning but I

  1329. want to just

  1330. call your

  1331. attention to

  1332. three qualities

  1333. and write this

  1334. down, you can

  1335. look at it on

  1336. your own.

  1337. Luke chapter 4

    Luke 4:22

  1338. verse 22

  1339. says this,

  1340. all spoke

  1341. well of him

  1342. and marveled

  1343. at the

  1344. gracious words

  1345. that were

  1346. coming from

  1347. his mouth.

  1348. So what

  1349. quality would

  1350. you look at

  1351. did they

  1352. recognize?

  1353. They recognized

  1354. gracious words.

  1355. Do you have

  1356. speech that is

  1357. dominated by

  1358. grace?

  1359. Do you have

  1360. speech that is

  1361. dominated by

  1362. appreciation?

  1363. Not complaining?

  1364. Not criticism?

  1365. But thankfulness?

  1366. Mark chapter 1

    Mark 1:27

  1367. verse 27 is

  1368. another quality

  1369. of Jesus'

  1370. words.

  1371. It says,

  1372. And all

  1373. marveled so

  1374. that they

  1375. questioned among

  1376. themselves saying,

  1377. What is this?

  1378. A new teaching

  1379. with authority.

  1380. He commands

  1381. even the

  1382. unclean spirits

  1383. and they obey

  1384. him.

  1385. Not only did

  1386. Jesus have

  1387. gracious words

  1388. but Jesus

  1389. had authoritative

  1390. words.

  1391. You can

  1392. exercise

  1393. the authority

  1394. of Christ

  1395. not because

  1396. you are an

  1397. authoritative

  1398. person but

  1399. because you

  1400. have authoritative

  1401. words.

  1402. And I'm not

  1403. talking about

  1404. casting out

  1405. demons so

  1406. please don't

  1407. misunderstand.

  1408. What I'm

  1409. talking about

  1410. is the

  1411. conviction that

  1412. comes because

  1413. you hold to

  1414. one truth.

  1415. You're anchored

  1416. in the singularity

  1417. of the message

  1418. of the Bible.

  1419. That's what

  1420. gives you

  1421. confidence.

  1422. Not your

  1423. experience.

  1424. Not your

  1425. past

  1426. successes.

  1427. But what

  1428. gives you

  1429. the ability

  1430. to speak

  1431. authoritatively

  1432. in a situation

  1433. is that the

  1434. Bible has

  1435. spoken

  1436. authoritatively.

  1437. And as a

  1438. pastor I may

  1439. not understand

  1440. your specific

  1441. situation but

  1442. I can give

  1443. you authoritative

  1444. words based

  1445. upon the

  1446. scripture because

  1447. God has

  1448. the news.

  1449. He has the

  1450. answer that we

  1451. can give to a

  1452. world that is

  1453. so desperate

  1454. for answers.

  1455. The third

  1456. quality and

  1457. there are many

  1458. others.

  1459. The third

  1460. quality is found

  1461. in Mark

    Mark 6:2

  1462. chapter 6

  1463. verse 2.

  1464. It says

  1465. on the

  1466. Sabbath he

  1467. began to

  1468. teach the

  1469. synagogue and

  1470. many who

  1471. heard him

  1472. were astonished

  1473. saying where

  1474. did this man

  1475. get these

  1476. things?

  1477. What is the

  1478. wisdom given

  1479. to him?

  1480. How are such

  1481. mighty works

  1482. done by his

  1483. hand?

  1484. We see that

  1485. Jesus also had

  1486. wise words.

  1487. wise words.

  1488. You have the

  1489. wisdom of

  1490. God.

  1491. You have the

  1492. truth of God

  1493. at your

  1494. disposal.

  1495. You have the

  1496. ability to speak

  1497. words of life

  1498. into people.

  1499. Wisdom for

  1500. their future.

  1501. Wisdom for

  1502. relationships.

  1503. Wisdom for

  1504. their workplace.

  1505. Wisdom for

  1506. family.

  1507. Not because

  1508. you are this

  1509. well of wisdom

  1510. but because you

  1511. have tapped

  1512. in to the

  1513. source of

  1514. wisdom as

  1515. Jesus did.

  1516. I think one

  1517. of the

  1518. clearest

  1519. evidences

  1520. in our

  1521. speech that

  1522. God has

  1523. transformed

  1524. us has to

  1525. do in

  1526. our response

  1527. to suffering

  1528. when it

  1529. comes.

  1530. Our

  1531. thankfulness

  1532. and gratitude

  1533. in spite of

  1534. hardship.

  1535. We see

  1536. verses like

  1537. rejoice evermore

  1538. in everything

  1539. give thanks.

  1540. Count it all

  1541. joy when you

  1542. fall into

  1543. various trials.

  1544. Bless those

  1545. who curse

  1546. you.

  1547. Bless and

  1548. curse not.

  1549. How can

  1550. anyone do

  1551. such things?

  1552. Well, it

  1553. can only be

  1554. done through

  1555. the power of

  1556. the Spirit

  1557. working in

  1558. your life.

  1559. And finally

  1560. to close,

  1561. we'll get to

  1562. point number

  1563. four next

  1564. week.

  1565. I've got one

  1566. more week to

  1567. go.

  1568. We'll just

  1569. combine it with

  1570. the next few

  1571. verses of

  1572. chapter 16.

  1573. Okay?

  1574. I want to

  1575. give this

  1576. appropriate

  1577. time.

  1578. Not only

  1579. does the

  1580. Spirit testify

  1581. of Christ,

  1582. and this

  1583. may be

  1584. one of the

  1585. neater truths

  1586. for us

  1587. today.

  1588. One commentator

  1589. says,

  1590. the work of

  1591. the Spirit

  1592. in the

  1593. church is

  1594. done in

  1595. the context

  1596. of persecution.

  1597. The Spirit

  1598. is not a

  1599. guide and

  1600. helper for

  1601. those on

  1602. a straight

  1603. way,

  1604. perfectly able

  1605. to manage

  1606. on their

  1607. own.

  1608. He comes

  1609. to assist

  1610. men caught

  1611. up in the

  1612. thick of

  1613. battle,

  1614. and tried

  1615. beyond their

  1616. strength.

  1617. Jesus makes

  1618. it quite

  1619. plain that

  1620. the way

  1621. before his

  1622. followers is

  1623. hard and

  1624. difficult way.

  1625. You want

  1626. the Spirit

  1627. to show up

  1628. in your

  1629. life?

  1630. You will

  1631. be strong

  1632. in the face

  1633. of hardship.

  1634. You will

  1635. not buckle.

  1636. You will

  1637. not resist

  1638. it.

  1639. You will

  1640. not push

  1641. it away

  1642. because you

  1643. will welcome

  1644. the power

  1645. of the

  1646. Spirit in

  1647. your life.

  1648. As Peter

  1649. later says

  1650. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 4:12

  1651. chapter 4

  1652. verse 12,

  1653. he says

  1654. this and

  1655. I'll close

  1656. with this

  1657. verse.

  1658. He says,

  1659. don't be

  1660. surprised at

  1661. the fiery

  1662. trial when

  1663. it comes

  1664. upon you

  1665. to test

  1666. you as

  1667. though

  1668. something

  1669. strange

  1670. were

  1671. happening

  1672. to you,

  1673. but rejoice

  1674. in so far

  1675. as you

  1676. share in

  1677. Christ's

  1678. afflictions

  1679. so that

  1680. you also

  1681. may rejoice

  1682. and be

  1683. glad when

  1684. his glory

  1685. is revealed.

  1686. If you

  1687. are insulted

  1688. for the

  1689. name of

  1690. Christ,

  1691. you are

  1692. blessed

  1693. because

  1694. the Spirit

  1695. of glory

  1696. and of

  1697. God

  1698. rests on

  1699. you.

  1700. You want

  1701. the Spirit

  1702. to show up

  1703. in your

  1704. life?

  1705. be willing

  1706. to embrace

  1707. his strength

  1708. in the midst

  1709. of considerable

  1710. weakness.

  1711. That's when

  1712. he'll show up.

  1713. And you

  1714. want to

  1715. magnify

  1716. the wonder

  1717. and sufficiency

  1718. of Christ

  1719. in this world?

  1720. Rejoice

  1721. that you

  1722. get to

  1723. emulate

  1724. and mirror

  1725. the life

  1726. of Christ

  1727. in facing

  1728. persecution

  1729. just like

  1730. Jesus did.

  1731. Well,

  1732. love for

  1733. God

  1734. will show

  1735. up in

  1736. our life

  1737. through a

  1738. love for

  1739. the world

  1740. in spite

  1741. of the

  1742. persecution

  1743. that you

  1744. face.

  1745. May God

  1746. help us

  1747. to love

  1748. him that

  1749. way and

  1750. to show

  1751. his

  1752. sweetness

  1753. to the

  1754. world

  1755. in the

  1756. face of

  1757. hardship.

  1758. Let's pray.

  1759. Lord,

  1760. we thank

  1761. you.

  1762. this morning

  1763. for the

  1764. love of

  1765. Christ

  1766. that anchors

  1767. us in

  1768. the storm.

  1769. Thank you,

  1770. Lord,

  1771. for the

  1772. assurance

  1773. of love

  1774. from Christ

  1775. that helps

  1776. us to

  1777. understand

  1778. that nothing

  1779. we face

  1780. in this

  1781. life is

  1782. an accident.

  1783. Nothing

  1784. that we

  1785. face in

  1786. this life

  1787. is in

  1788. vain.

  1789. It's all

  1790. meant to

  1791. push us

  1792. and to

  1793. draw us

  1794. into

  1795. closer

  1796. relationship

  1797. with you

  1798. and to

  1799. make

  1800. the

  1801. sweetness

  1802. of

  1803. Christ,

  1804. the

  1805. testimony

  1806. of

  1807. God

  1808. attractive

  1809. in this

  1810. world.

  1811. So,

  1812. Lord,

  1813. I pray

  1814. that you

  1815. would

  1816. continue

  1817. to do

  1818. a work

  1819. in our

  1820. hearts.

  1821. Help us

  1822. to be so

  1823. caught up

  1824. with the

  1825. love of

  1826. Christ

  1827. that it

  1828. stabilizes

  1829. us when

  1830. hardship

  1831. comes.

  1832. and may

  1833. we show

  1834. how wonderful

  1835. you are

  1836. through our

  1837. steadfastness

  1838. in our

  1839. faith

  1840. and looking

  1841. forward to

  1842. the hope

  1843. of your

  1844. return.

  1845. We praise

  1846. you,

  1847. Lord,

  1848. for all

  1849. that you

  1850. have

  1851. accomplished

  1852. for us

  1853. and particularly

  1854. for the

  1855. helper that

  1856. you have

  1857. given to

  1858. us through

  1859. the Holy

  1860. Spirit

  1861. to come

  1862. and indwell

  1863. us and

  1864. to strengthen

  1865. us in

  1866. life's

  1867. endeavors.

  1868. We praise

  1869. you in

  1870. Jesus'

  1871. name.

  1872. Amen.
