  1. I believe in the prayers of God's people.

  2. I don't know that I was that succinct 30 years ago,

  3. !

  4. I was a very poor decision to even ask me.

  5. But I remember as I deliberated on that question,

  6. one of the things that was a clincher for me

  7. as I debated the question was this,

  8. who will pray for me?

  9. I couldn't imagine leaving people that I knew prayed for me.

  10. So here I am.

  11. Doing what I have done from month to month and week to week,

  12. asking you to pray and having confidence in the power of the Word of God

  13. to make a difference in your lives.

  14. Turn your Bibles to Matthew 26, verse 14.

    Matthew 26:14

  15. Let me read to you.

  16. Matthew 26, verse 14.

    Matthew 26:14

  17. Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot,

  18. went to the chief priests and said,

  19. What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?

  20. And they paid him 30 pieces of silver,

  21. and from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.

  22. Now on the first day of unleavened bread,

  23. the disciples came to Jesus, saying,

  24. Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?

  25. He said, Go into the city to a certain man and say to him,

  26. The teacher says, My time is at hand,

  27. and I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.

  28. And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them,

  29. and they prepared the Passover.

  30. When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve,

  31. and as they were eating, he said,

  32. Truly I say to you, one of you will betray me.

  33. And they were very sorrowful,

  34. and began to say to him, one after another,

  35. Is it I, Lord?

  36. Let's pray.

  37. Father, for us, prayer is a recurring declaration of your sufficiency

  38. and your goodness in our dependency.

  39. And we ask that your spirit would quicken our hearts

  40. to behold wondrous truths in your word,

  41. and that through the enabling of the Spirit of God,

  42. that we, beholding as in a mirror the face and truth

  43. of our Lord Jesus Christ, would be affected by that,

  44. and we would grow to be more like him.

  45. And that those who are here today,

  46. that do not know the Lord Jesus Christ,

  47. would be drawn to the cross

  48. and recognize the darkness of their soul

  49. and their complete inability to save themselves,

  50. and that they would cry out upon the Lord Jesus,

  51. in whom alone is salvation.

  52. And we ask this in Jesus' name.

  53. Amen.

  54. Amen.

  55. If you were to ask me to explain in a single sentence

  56. what really the purpose of preaching is,

  57. and I'd confess that on various days I may say it

  58. with a slight different perspective,

  59. I would say fundamentally that at the heart of preaching is this goal,

  60. preaching aims to make much of Jesus.

  61. Underneath the little glass top here,

  62. there's a little note that I have to myself

  63. that has often reminded me when I stand here

  64. with the responsibility of being a messenger of the Lord of hosts,

  65. it says,

  66. how does this sermon testify to Christ?

  67. It is a summary of John chapter 5, verse 39,

    John 5:39

  68. where Jesus, when he was identifying the issue of his person

  69. and his work, he said,

  70. listen, at the heart,

  71. the Scriptures bear witness to me.

  72. And so when a man stands before you,

  73. whether it is Pastor Shearer or Tim Knoyer,

  74. the truth of the matter is,

  75. as we read the same book, we love the same Lord,

  76. and our task is fundamentally the same.

  77. It is to make much of Jesus.

  78. And so here we are,

  79. just in front of Resurrection Sunday,

  80. and we're having the Lord's table,

  81. and as we gather together,

  82. and as I've been praying and thinking about this,

  83. actually, if you would say,

  84. how many of you remember

  85. what Last Communion Service's text was?

  86. Does anybody remember here?

  87. It was Matthew chapter 26,

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  88. and when he had broken the bread,

  89. he gave it to the disciples and said,

  90. take this, eat, this is my body,

  91. and he took the cup,

  92. and when he'd given,

  93. do you remember now?

  94. When he'd given thanks.

  95. We're backing up a little bit,

  96. and I want you to ponder with me,

  97. just for a moment,

  98. the unbelievable picture

  99. of what we find here,

  100. and its testimony to the love of Christ for us.

  101. We're going to look at a passage

  102. that really displays and brings to forefront

  103. an unbelievable and a striking picture

  104. of the hearts of mankind,

  105. and including mine and yours,

  106. and the love of Christ,

  107. which, as it says in Ephesians,

  108. transcends and surpasses what we can imagine.

  109. So as we step into this verse,

  110. let's begin, first of all,

  111. by recognizing that what we're going to read here

  112. in this passage is an indication

  113. of the most vile betrayal of all time.

  114. As you look at the passage,

  115. we take up the text there in verse 14,

  116. and we find that Judas Iscariot

  117. is offering to the chief priests

  118. and the leadership of the Jews

  119. an opportunity to betray

  120. and ultimately bring about the death of the Savior.

  121. The other Gospels help us understand

  122. that the hatred that the Jews had for Jesus

  123. had reached this fever pitch

  124. that they wanted to do everything they could

  125. to destroy Him,

  126. and yet there was this tension

  127. and this uncertainty.

  128. They were afraid that they couldn't pull it off

  129. because the crowds thought very much of Jesus,

  130. and He had done so much for so many people

  131. that there was a real hesitancy on their part

  132. to do it publicly.

  133. And so they, seeking a way,

  134. and Judas evidently aware of this,

  135. I mean, it must have been a buzz going around,

  136. hey, listen, does anybody know how to catch them privately

  137. and cause problems?

  138. And here's Judas.

  139. He knew their hatred.

  140. He knew their hesitancy,

  141. and so he comes to them privately,

  142. and he says, listen, I'll do it.

  143. I'll do it.

  144. And I want you to stop and recognize

  145. that here was a disciple,

  146. one of the 12,

  147. that Jesus had chosen to walk with him,

  148. and observe every bit of his ministry and his heart.

  149. It was one of those 12 that was going to willingly betray Jesus

  150. and lead ultimately to his death.

  151. You know, when we do something in ignorance

  152. and we do something without a full knowledge

  153. of what is taking place,

  154. in some sense what we do is less offensive

  155. than what we do intentionally

  156. and against the grain of the reality

  157. of what we've experienced.

  158. Remember when Jesus said,

  159. woe to you, Jehorazin,

  160. woe to you, Bethsaida,

  161. because if the miracles that have been done in your presence

  162. had been done in Tyre and Sidon,

  163. they'd still exist.

  164. The point he was making is that

  165. unto whom much is given,

  166. what?

  167. Much is required.

  168. There is an amplification

  169. of the consequence of sin

  170. proportionate to the blessing that we have received.

  171. And here was Judas

  172. against the backdrop

  173. of all that he had experienced and seen,

  174. willingly setting the plate

  175. for the betrayal of Christ.

  176. He was doing it against the background

  177. of a close relationship.

  178. He'd been one of the 12.

  179. He had enjoyed three full years

  180. of the presence and the love of Christ.

  181. One of the things that we read in the book of John

  182. as we were working our way through it

  183. is that Jesus loved them to the end.

  184. He never changed his mind

  185. about his unconditional love

  186. for those 12.

  187. And here was Judas,

  188. knowing our Savior,

  189. knowing what he had done,

  190. knowing every one of his good,

  191. kind deeds and his sensitivity,

  192. here was Judas ready to betray him

  193. and doing it intentionally against his friend.

  194. I want you to understand also

  195. that it was done with premeditation.

  196. He had thought it out.

  197. He pondered about the time

  198. in which he could pull this off.

  199. And so quietly and on his own,

  200. he snuck away

  201. and he presents this opportunity

  202. to enemies of Christ

  203. and he says,

  204. listen, I'm ready to do it,

  205. but how much are you going to pay me for this?

  206. Can you imagine negotiating with someone

  207. to betray your best friend or your wife?

  208. Here's Jesus.

  209. The one who had in every case,

  210. there was never a question

  211. of his love and his concern

  212. and his sympathy for Judas

  213. and yet here was Judas

  214. so darkened in his heart

  215. that he was dickering with these leaders

  216. about how much money

  217. he was going to get for this.

  218. You know, a sin of passion is offensive

  219. and more than once

  220. we have acted in a fashion

  221. that really has shown a very poor heart

  222. but I would have to say,

  223. you know, it wasn't well thought out.

  224. It wasn't something that I pondered

  225. and did over a period of time.

  226. Let me give you an illustration.

  227. You're on a long road trip.

  228. We used to travel,

  229. Judith and I,

  230. her parents were in Florida.

  231. It was about a 20-hour drive

  232. from where we were

  233. in Northeastern Ohio

  234. to Florida

  235. and we were in a Datsun 510 station wagon.

  236. It's much smaller

  237. than you can imagine.

  238. We had four kids

  239. and two adults in that car

  240. and it was a,

  241. that was before vans

  242. had been invented.

  243. How many of you are

  244. of the generation

  245. where you remember

  246. the station wagons?

  247. Well, we didn't have

  248. one of those Land Cruiser

  249. boat station wagons.

  250. We had this little dinky,

  251. dinky Japanese knockoff

  252. and we put the four kids

  253. in the back

  254. with all of our luggage

  255. and the first thing

  256. that would happen

  257. is that they'd start asking,

  258. are we there yet?

  259. That was not a problem to me.

  260. No, we're not.

  261. But when I was blessed,

  262. I have been blessed

  263. with two boys and two girls

  264. and guess what?

  265. You know,

  266. you'd have the seating going on.

  267. It's one thing

  268. to hit your brother

  269. in the back of the car

  270. on a 20-hour road trip.

  271. It's another thing

  272. to hit your dad.

  273. Now listen to me carefully.

  274. I don't want you to miss this.

  275. There's not a Bible verse

  276. that really talks about

  277. hitting your brother

  278. in the back of the car

  279. that I can think of.

  280. Maybe I text me later

  281. and let me know.

  282. But there is,

  283. paying attention,

  284. you listen to me,

  285. there is a Bible verse

  286. that says,

  287. woe to the person

  288. who raises his hand

  289. against his father.

  290. I was full of vinegar

  291. when I was younger.

  292. Still have some.

  293. But, you know,

  294. I remember my dad

  295. and I having a rather

  296. animated conversation.

  297. I was 20.

  298. And I thought

  299. that I could win the argument.

  300. I remember reaching a point

  301. of raising my voice

  302. and he said,

  303. you say another word

  304. and I'll slap you.

  305. That was the last word

  306. I said that day.

  307. It never crossed my mind

  308. to raise my hand

  309. against my father.

  310. Do you follow that?

  311. And here was Judas

  312. willing to raise his hand

  313. against his savior.

  314. An unbelievable act

  315. by a profoundly wicked heart.

  316. And as we look at the horror

  317. of what Judas

  318. was ready to do,

  319. there should be,

  320. in all of our hearts

  321. this morning,

  322. there should be a sobering,

  323. I can't believe

  324. Judas would do that.

  325. Do you follow that?

  326. That's a dark heart.

  327. I want you to look

  328. at the second piece

  329. that I really want you

  330. to dig in on.

  331. Verse 21.

  332. And as they were eating,

  333. he said,

  334. truly,

  335. now how many of you know

  336. that the little words

  337. truly or truly,

  338. truly are like,

  339. it's like a highlighter

  340. or a yellow marker

  341. on something.

  342. It's like,

  343. it's bold, right?

  344. Hey,

  345. wake up everybody.

  346. I know you've got food

  347. in your mouth,

  348. but listen,

  349. right now I want you

  350. to pay attention.

  351. One of you here

  352. is going to betray me.

  353. There are several things

  354. that I want you to ponder

  355. and one of the things

  356. that I would encourage you

  357. to do,

  358. listen to me,

  359. one of the things

  360. that goes with being

  361. faithful in our Bible reading

  362. is asking ourselves

  363. the question

  364. over and over again,

  365. why is this here?

  366. Right?

  367. Make sense?

  368. Why did the Holy Spirit

  369. put that in there?

  370. Why is it there?

  371. I think there are some things

  372. that we need to recognize

  373. as we look at this passage

  374. and Jesus is making

  375. a profound statement

  376. when he says,

  377. hey,

  378. one of you is going

  379. to betray me.

  380. Why is it there?

  381. For one,

  382. Jesus' announcement

  383. shows his deity

  384. yet again.

  385. How many of you know

  386. what's going to happen

  387. tomorrow?

  388. I was looking at my calendar

  389. and, you know,

  390. and, okay,

  391. this is going to happen

  392. and that's going to happen

  393. and I reminded myself

  394. there's a little phrase

  395. from James

  396. that sticks in my mind

  397. that says,

  398. if the Lord wills.

  399. Okay?

  400. I don't know

  401. what's going to happen

  402. tomorrow for sure.

  403. I have some ideas.

  404. My schedule

  405. kind of mapped out

  406. and I, okay,

  407. this, this, this,

  408. but I thought,

  409. you know,

  410. if the Lord wills.

  411. Here's Jesus saying,

  412. this is what's going

  413. to happen.

  414. One of you is going

  415. to betray me

  416. and only God

  417. can know the future

  418. and speak to it

  419. accurately and intelligently.

  420. But there's another thing

  421. that I want you

  422. to recognize.

  423. The announcement

  424. is also a deep lesson

  425. on our sinful hearts.

  426. Jesus knew exactly

  427. who his betrayer

  428. was going to be

  429. and yet his opening

  430. statements were

  431. rather general.

  432. He could have said,

  433. hey, everybody listen up.

  434. Just a little while,

  435. Judas is going to walk

  436. out of here

  437. and he's going

  438. to betray me.

  439. It is significant

  440. that he said,

  441. one of you

  442. is going to betray me.

  443. The thing that I find

  444. very interesting

  445. is the response

  446. of the disciples.

  447. Look at it.

  448. Look at it.

  449. These are 12 men

  450. that had spent

  451. three years

  452. in the presence

  453. and under the teaching

  454. of Christ.

  455. Stop just for a moment.

  456. How many of you

  457. have ever listened

  458. to a conversation

  459. in which someone said,

  460. well, so-and-so

  461. committed such-and-such

  462. a crime.

  463. He left his wife.

  464. He ran off with blah, blah, blah.

  465. Or he robbed a bank

  466. or he got involved

  467. in drugs

  468. and he's in rehab now.

  469. Any of you,

  470. don't raise your hands,

  471. any of you ever thought

  472. to yourself,

  473. never happened to me.

  474. Not me.

  475. Won't happen to me.

  476. Here is Jesus

  477. speaking to the 12

  478. and he says,

  479. you know what?

  480. One of you

  481. is going to betray me.

  482. What happens next?

  483. Look at it.

  484. Look at it.

  485. And they were

  486. very sorrowful.

  487. Who was sorrowful?

  488. Peter,

  489. John,

  490. James,

  491. Andrew,

  492. Nathaniel.

  493. Do you follow me?

  494. They were sorrowful.

  495. They were very sorrowful.

  496. They were...

  497. And they began to say to him

  498. one after another,

  499. underline these words

  500. in your Bible.

  501. I want you to have them

  502. stick in your mind.

  503. Is it I?

  504. Do you know what that reflects?

  505. I think we make very little

  506. of just how dark

  507. our hearts

  508. actually are.

  509. Here is Jesus

  510. speaking of

  511. the supreme

  512. betrayal

  513. and every one of the disciples

  514. have the spiritual

  515. discernment.

  516. Pay attention.

  517. To ask a logical,

  518. practical question.

  519. Am I the one

  520. who's going

  521. to do it?

  522. Do you know what that tells me?

  523. For a brief moment,

  524. these disciples

  525. were thinking

  526. with clear

  527. theological

  528. understanding

  529. of the darkness

  530. of the human heart.

  531. You know,

  532. we sing

  533. the words,

  534. good song,

  535. it says,

  536. prone to wonder,

  537. Lord,

  538. I feel it,

  539. prone to leave,

  540. the God I love.

  541. And at the very time

  542. we are singing

  543. some of these words,

  544. our minds

  545. are engaged

  546. in unforgiveness,

  547. our minds

  548. are engaged

  549. in bitterness,

  550. our minds

  551. are engaged

  552. in lust,

  553. our minds

  554. are engaged

  555. in self-idolatry

  556. and we are not

  557. as fearful

  558. of the darkness

  559. of our own heart

  560. as we ought to be.

  561. Take just a moment

  562. and turn over

  563. to a passage

  564. that should help us

  565. in relationship

  566. to this.

  567. Psalm 19,

    Psalms 19:12

  568. verse 12 and 13,

  569. here's what the psalmist

  570. says in this

  571. unbelief,

  572. my wife is not in here,

  573. she's working

  574. in a nursery,

  575. but if I were to ask her

  576. today,

  577. so how did it go?

  578. She would say

  579. you used the same words

  580. over and over again,

  581. so unbelievable

  582. is off the table.

  583. It will not be said again,

  584. thank you,

  585. today.

  586. Psalm 19,

  587. a psalm about the word,

  588. that always gets me excited.

  589. But look at 12 and 13,

  590. who can discern

  591. his errors?

  592. Hey, everybody look up.

  593. Your heart

  594. is an absolute

  595. pit.

  596. And the sooner

  597. you come to grips

  598. with the darkness

  599. of your own heart,

  600. the more you will cling

  601. to the remedy

  602. of the work

  603. of the Spirit of God

  604. and the word of God

  605. in helping you

  606. stay anchored.

  607. Who can discern

  608. his errors?

  609. Declare me innocent

  610. from hidden faults.

  611. Keep back your servant

  612. from presumptuous sins.

  613. You know what

  614. a presumptuous sin is?

  615. It's a sin

  616. of my arrogant,

  617. proud heart.

  618. I gotta tell you.

  619. I remember a conversation

  620. not too long ago

  621. with an individual

  622. who's explaining

  623. the sinfulness

  624. of their behavior

  625. and arguing with me

  626. about the justification

  627. of it.

  628. But I gotta tell you,

  629. I've done the same thing.

  630. Judas is in the nursery

  631. so I can tell you this.

  632. Every now and then

  633. I wake up with a surly spirit.

  634. Do you know what I mean

  635. by a surly spirit?

  636. I mean just kind of

  637. self-focused,

  638. a little irritated

  639. and I remember

  640. we were having coffee together

  641. and I let a little

  642. of my sarcasm go.

  643. It's like,

  644. there it was

  645. and she said,

  646. I didn't deserve that.

  647. You're right.

  648. It's just my black heart.

  649. You know,

  650. it's like,

  651. God help me.

  652. And here is the psalmist

  653. saying,

  654. you know,

  655. your word is what's

  656. gonna help me

  657. to not be so self-focused

  658. and presumptuous.

  659. And he says,

  660. then I shall be blameless

  661. and innocent

  662. of the great transgression.

  663. But coming back

  664. to the passage,

  665. here we are,

  666. Jesus explaining

  667. that one of them

  668. is going to betray him

  669. and I am struck

  670. by the fact

  671. that every one

  672. of the disciples,

  673. I am stuck.

  674. Everyone says,

  675. is it I?

  676. And I gotta tell you something,

  677. listen to me carefully,

  678. until you have

  679. that level of respect

  680. and regard

  681. for the sinfulness

  682. of your natural inclinations,

  683. you are dancing

  684. close to the edge.

  685. It's interesting as well

  686. that what Jesus said

  687. brought a very interesting

  688. response from the disciples.

  689. They all ask a question,

  690. is it I?

  691. What they were doing

  692. was they were seeking

  693. the counsel of the word

  694. of God,

  695. namely the person

  696. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  697. to help them identify,

  698. is it me?

  699. Is my heart the one

  700. that's going to do this?

  701. Instead of being flippant

  702. and say,

  703. I'd never do that.

  704. And by the way,

  705. lest we give the disciples

  706. too much credit,

  707. you do want to remember

  708. that just a little while later,

  709. remember Jesus said,

  710. you're all going to abandon me

  711. and what do they say?

  712. Hey, there's Peter.

  713. Not me.

  714. They all step up.

  715. No, not me.

  716. But just for a moment,

  717. we find some good theological thinking

  718. in these 12.

  719. They're concerned about sin.

  720. Hey, are you concerned about sin?

  721. Are you really concerned about sin?

  722. I was speaking with someone

  723. not too long ago

  724. about the advantage of being 68.

  725. There aren't as many as I wish,

  726. but one of the advantages of this

  727. is that, you know,

  728. it's like I was complaining

  729. with someone else.

  730. I wasn't complaining.

  731. I was listening to them

  732. talk about what it was

  733. to get old,

  734. and I thought, yeah.

  735. But anyway,

  736. one of the advantages

  737. of being 68

  738. is that God has dealt firmly

  739. with Tim Kenoyer

  740. repeatedly over sin.

  741. And I'm at the point

  742. where all he has to do

  743. is kind of tap me

  744. on the shoulder

  745. and say,

  746. do you remember

  747. where your parents would say,

  748. my dad would say this,

  749. you're cruising for a bruising.

  750. Something about the poetry of that

  751. just kind of impressed me immediately.

  752. It's like,

  753. my dad gave me the luxury

  754. of choosing which belt

  755. was going to be

  756. the instrument of destruction.

  757. It's like,

  758. he had about eight or nine

  759. and I never found the right one.

  760. It's just,

  761. but I did experiment regularly.

  762. The advantage of being 68

  763. is that Tim Kenoyer

  764. has a pathological fear

  765. for the darkness

  766. of his own heart.

  767. Is it I?

  768. Oh, Lord.

  769. Keep me from sin.

  770. Keep me from sin.

  771. And here are the disciples

  772. crying out to Jesus,

  773. you know,

  774. am I the one

  775. that's going to do this?

  776. I wonder how often

  777. you actually do that.

  778. Where you,

  779. because you have

  780. a abiding fear,

  781. an abiding fear,

  782. try that proper grammar here,

  783. you have an abiding fear

  784. for sin,

  785. you engage other people

  786. in helping you

  787. with the darkness

  788. of your own heart.

  789. Hmm?

  790. I want you to recognize

  791. one other thing here

  792. in this passage.

  793. The announcement

  794. that Jesus made

  795. to the disciples

  796. was in a final appeal

  797. to the betrayer

  798. to stop in his tracks

  799. and repent.

  800. I'm struck by that.

  801. Did Jesus look forward

  802. in one sense

  803. to the cross

  804. and what's the answer?

  805. No.

  806. I mean,

  807. what does it say?

  808. In the garden,

  809. how was he praying?

  810. If it be,

  811. what was he praying?

  812. All right,

  813. Lord,

  814. bring it on.

  815. I'm ready for this one.

  816. Now,

  817. one of the problems

  818. we have

  819. is we are,

  820. we're not able,

  821. we're not able

  822. to focus on true truths

  823. at the same time.

  824. It kind of frustrates

  825. us a little bit

  826. because we like everything

  827. to be logical,

  828. but here's Jesus.

  829. If it be possible,

  830. let this cup pass from me.

  831. And on the other hand,

  832. in Hebrews chapter 12,

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  833. it says,

  834. who for the joy

  835. that was set before him,

  836. you know,

  837. despising the shame

  838. and during the cross,

  839. we can't do

  840. the two things together.

  841. Here is Jesus

  842. with this tender heart

  843. in the midst

  844. of knowing full well

  845. that just within hours

  846. he is going to be

  847. crucified.

  848. one more time,

  849. one more time,

  850. one more time,

  851. he reaches out to Judas

  852. and gives him

  853. an opportunity to repent.

  854. I've got to stop

  855. just for a second.

  856. If more of God's people

  857. understood how gracious

  858. and patient

  859. and forgiving

  860. Jesus is

  861. and God is,

  862. they would be more

  863. inclined to forgive

  864. and forbear

  865. with one another.

  866. here is Jesus

  867. facing his crucifixion

  868. and he asks

  869. his disciples

  870. to think very carefully

  871. about the sin

  872. in their own hearts.

  873. I've got to say this,

  874. in the face of this

  875. scriptural evidence,

  876. we ought to be

  877. profoundly humble

  878. in admitting

  879. our spiritual frailty

  880. and our need for grace.

  881. So here's a little

  882. practical little test

  883. as to how you're

  884. doing at that.

  885. Everybody listen

  886. because this is important.

  887. This is the takeaway.

  888. Are you ready for this?

  889. When was the last time

  890. you willingly received

  891. admonition from a brother

  892. or a sister,

  893. a wife or a husband,

  894. a father or someone else

  895. when they admonished you

  896. scripturally and said,

  897. that's wrong

  898. and you said,

  899. thank you.

  900. Let the righteous

  901. strike me,

  902. I will count it

  903. a healing oil

  904. is what the psalmist says.

  905. Bring it on,

  906. I need it

  907. because I have

  908. a dark heart

  909. that desperately needs

  910. the grace of God,

  911. the word of God

  912. and the family of God.

  913. Let's come to some

  914. closing implications

  915. before we come

  916. to the table.

  917. I have to tell you,

  918. you look here

  919. in verse 23

  920. and says,

  921. He answered,

  922. He who has dipped

  923. his hand in the dish

  924. with me will betray me.

  925. The Son of Man

  926. goes as it is written

  927. of him,

  928. but woe to that man,

  929. many,

  930. that man

  931. by whom the Son of Man

  932. is betrayed,

  933. it would have been

  934. better for that man

  935. if he had not been born.

  936. And Judas,

  937. who would betray him,

  938. answered,

  939. Is it I, Rabbi?

  940. And he said to him,

  941. You've said so.

  942. I want you to write down

  943. a word

  944. and hold on to this.

  945. The word is antinomy,

  946. A-N-T-I-N-O-M-Y,

  947. antinomy.

  948. Here's what I mean.

  949. I'll explain it this way.

  950. An antinomy

  951. is two opposing,

  952. seemingly opposing laws

  953. that you have trouble

  954. putting together.

  955. Right?

  956. How could Jesus be

  957. all man

  958. and all God?

  959. How many's got,

  960. who's got that figured out?

  961. Raise your hands

  962. and wave at me

  963. because I want to consult

  964. with you afterwards.

  965. How many of you

  966. understand that

  967. our God

  968. is Trinitarian?

  969. We have here

  970. a picture

  971. that brings together

  972. Scripture often

  973. puts divine sovereignty

  974. and human responsibility

  975. side by side.

  976. And one of the reasons

  977. it does that

  978. is so we don't miss

  979. the challenge.

  980. And when you don't keep

  981. those two truths

  982. in humble balance,

  983. you end up on one side

  984. or the other

  985. to your harm

  986. and sometimes

  987. to others.

  988. And so,

  989. I want to kind of

  990. remind you

  991. of a passage

  992. in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 29:29

  993. chapter 29

  994. verse 29

  995. where it says this.

  996. It says,

  997. the secret things

  998. belong to the Lord

  999. our God.

  1000. What's that saying?

  1001. There's some things

  1002. that I don't get.

  1003. Do you get it?

  1004. There's some things

  1005. that I don't get,

  1006. but the things

  1007. that are revealed

  1008. belong to us

  1009. and to our children

  1010. forever

  1011. that we may do

  1012. all the words

  1013. of this law.

1014. So let me close out

  1015. with this.

  1016. In this passage,

  1017. we see the heart

  1018. of our Savior

  1019. as being profoundly

  1020. merciful,

  1021. profoundly instructive.

1022. He says to the disciples,

  1023. Men,

1024. I want you to understand

  1025. that your heart

  1026. has the profound

  1027. darkness

  1028. that can readily

  1029. betray me

  1030. and live with humility

  1031. and dependence

  1032. upon the Word

  1033. and dependence

  1034. upon the family

  1035. of God

  1036. to protect you

  1037. from the natural

  1038. inclination

  1039. to drift

  1040. into darkness.

  1041. Second,

  1042. here is Jesus

  1043. reaching out

  1044. to one

  1045. who is going

  1046. to betray him

  1047. in just moments,

  1048. gives him

  1049. one last opportunity.

  1050. Can I pose a question?

  1051. There's not an answer

  1052. to it,

  1053. but just imagine

  1054. Judas said,

  1055. Man,

  1056. it's me

  1057. and I'm going

  1058. to stop this.

  1059. Would Jesus

  1060. have granted

  1061. forgiveness to him?

  1062. What's the answer?

  1063. Absolutely.

  1064. By the way,

  1065. if he was willing

  1066. to forgive Nineveh

  1067. and he was willing

  1068. to forgive Ahab,

  1069. right?

  1070. Now,

  1071. don't get wound up

  1072. around the axle

  1073. on this,

1074. but I got to tell you,

  1075. here's what we know

  1076. about our God.

  1077. He is forgiving

  1078. and patient

  1079. and he appeals

  1080. to sinners

  1081. to repent.

  1082. And so,

  1083. this morning

  1084. as we come

  1085. to the Lord's table

  1086. and I would ask

  1087. the deacons

  1088. to come now,

  1089. we take the elements

  1090. that remind us

  1091. why

  1092. Jesus can offer us

  1093. complete forgiveness

1094. for all of our sins.

  1095. It's because he died

  1096. for us

1097. and died in our place

  1098. and has granted

  1099. to us

  1100. the blessing

  1101. of an offer

  1102. of salvation

  1103. because of his

  1104. finished sacrifice

  1105. for us.

  1106. Let us pray.

  1107. Our Father God,

  1108. this morning

1109. as we take this bread

1110. and we take the cup,

  1111. we're very thankful

  1112. that the scriptures

  1113. tell us

1114. that this is a reminder

  1115. of what you

  1116. did for us.
