  1. Turn your Bibles this morning to 1 Corinthians chapter 15.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  2. ! I think that means there's children's church.

  3. ! John was whispering in my ear,

  4. and I had someone actually ask me,

  5. is there children's church today?

  6. and they were asking the wrong individual.

  7. Linda, you're guilty of putting me on the spot and saying,

  8. is there children's church?

  9. and having been my secretary for what, 10, 12 years, 15?

  10. it's like, don't ask me.

  11. I'm thinking about preaching, and there's like zero bandwidth beyond that.

  12. Yes, children are dismissed now, please.

  13. And I love saying to you, turn in your Bibles.

  14. Go to 1 Corinthians chapter 15.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  15. It's one thing to be preaching through a book such as John,

  16. and know that, Lord willing, next week when I come back from vacation,

  17. I will be in John 16,

  18. and it is a passage and a portion of Scripture that I've never preached before.

  19. And there's a part of study and prayer in dialing into that that is just a wonderful blessing.

  20. It is also a blessing, however, to come to a passage that you have used over and over again,

  21. mindful of this fact,

  22. that while the information has been viewed and studied and prayed about before,

  23. the ministry of the Spirit of God in that text and in my life and in your life

  24. is different each time.

  25. It's renewed, refreshed.

  26. It is valuable, and it is significant.

  27. And so one of the things that I would challenge you,

  28. this is probably not your first Easter, right?

  29. There are some of you that were probably carried to your first Easter service

  30. without your dad or mom ever asking you if you wanted to go.

  31. And you probably have been part of that routine,

  32. and there's a certain thing that you do on Easter.

  33. You dress a certain way, flowers.

  34. By the way, how many of you like these flowers?

  35. I had absolutely nothing to do with it,

  36. and I'd like to thank all the ladies who did a wonderful, beautiful job.

  37. I think Mary Ellen kind of encouraged it.

  38. Where are you, Mary Ellen?

  39. Somewhere out here?

  40. Whoa!

  41. It's like...

  42. We like things like that.

  43. It's just a...

  44. Yeah.

  45. It's like whipped cream on things, you know?

  46. It's like, good.

  47. We celebrate Easter,

  48. and we get into the blessing of what this day is,

  49. and I think sometimes we caught up in the flow of it

  50. and don't think carefully about why the day really is significant.

  51. And so I want you to think very carefully this morning

  52. about the significance of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  53. And we are using this passage in 1 Corinthians 15,

  54. which is a text that kind of dives into the Apostle Paul's preaching

  55. in relationship to the question of the resurrection.

  56. And I want you to walk away from this morning's lesson

  57. with several things in mind.

  58. Number one, listen carefully,

  59. what the Holy Spirit does in response to your prayers in your life

  60. is dependent in part on you praying at all.

  61. What I mean by that is it is fairly easy

  62. when you are looking at a passage,

  63. and you've looked at it before,

  64. and you've looked at it a number of times,

  65. that you can kind of,

  66. well, I got this one,

  67. and kind of settle back and not say,

  68. I need the Holy Spirit's help,

  69. that we get into this,

  70. and we understand it,

  71. and we're affected by it

  72. in a fashion that honors the Lord Jesus Christ.

  73. So I trust one of the things that happens

  74. is you walk away from here saying,

  75. wow, the Spirit of God used the Word of God

  76. to affect the believer's life,

  77. and you are changed and growing as a result of that.

  78. Secondly, I would pray that if you are here today

  79. and do not know the Lord Jesus Christ,

  80. that today would be the day

  81. that He in His kindness and His grace

  82. brings you to the point of recognizing

  83. the bankruptcy and the darkness

  84. and the misery of your heart,

  85. and you are drawn to call out on Jesus

  86. as your only hope and Savior.

  87. Because really what this day celebrates

  88. is the reason that I can say without any hesitation

  89. that there is salvation in no other name

  90. but the Lord Jesus Christ.

  91. And as I lift them up this morning,

  92. and as you lift them up,

  93. that was good singing this morning, wasn't it?

  94. I'm sitting here on the front pew.

  95. It's one of the best seats in the house,

  96. and I am just listening to you guys blowing it out,

  97. and I'm thinking, man, what a day.

  98. What a day.

  99. We worship Him because of the resurrection.

  100. Now, as we look at the passage there,

  101. I want you to mark what it says in verse 3.

  102. Actually, again, go into the details in verse 1.

  103. It says,

  104. I remind you, my brothers,

  105. of the gospel I preached to you

  106. which you received and in which you stand.

  107. Paul is recognizing here at the very beginning

  108. of the importance of what he is going to be talking about,

  109. and he says, listen,

  110. I'm reminding you of something

  111. that has been a central thread

  112. throughout all of my preaching.

  113. It is not only a central thread of all of my preaching,

  114. but he says,

  115. it's what you rest on.

  116. It's what you are established in.

  117. And then later on, he also says,

  118. it is that which you are being saved by.

  119. The reality of the fact is that our salvation

  120. is dependent upon the resurrection.

  121. And this morning, as we get into this passage

  122. and what Paul has to say,

  123. I want you to walk out of here being very, very thankful.

  124. I am so thankful that Lord Jesus Christ died

  125. for my sins according to the Scripture

  126. and that He rose again according to the Scriptures.

  127. Now, what we find here in this passage,

  128. and we're going to look at verse 4 in particular,

  129. it says,

  130. He was buried,

  131. then He was raised on the third day

  132. in accordance with the Scriptures.

  133. We find kind of pressed together

  134. a perfect picture of apostolic preaching.

  135. Apostolic preaching is important to us

  136. because the apostles were appointed by Christ

  137. to be His formal representatives

  138. and His mouthpiece, His speaker.

  139. They were given legal, in a sense,

  140. legal authority to represent Christ

  141. and the apostolic preaching is very significant.

  142. So this morning, we want to think very carefully,

  143. what is the centrality of the resurrection

  144. in the preaching of the apostles?

  145. And as we look at this,

  146. I want you to begin by recognizing

  147. that context is important.

  148. One of the things that is so profoundly important

  149. in our own Bible study,

  150. and I remind you of this,

  151. part of the purpose of preaching

  152. is to inform and encourage

  153. your own Bible study at home.

  154. This is not the only place

  155. that you ought to find

  156. spiritual encouragement and refreshment.

  157. It ought to be taking place

  158. every morning, every night,

  159. in your own heart,

  160. that you are refreshed and encouraged

  161. by the truth of who God is

  162. and what He has done,

  163. by the significance of the Word.

  164. So woven into preaching that is biblical

  165. is the intention of helping you learn to think

  166. how you go about finding things in the Scripture.

  167. And I tell you that context is important.

  168. An illustration of that would be

  169. if you were standing in front of a firing squad

  170. and you heard someone say,

  171. fire,

  172. fire,

  173. or if you heard someone yell fire in here,

  174. or if you having been very, very cold

  175. and a camping situation,

  176. I know, Doug,

  177. you're going to be camping in June,

  178. am I right?

  179. The campfires that you guys are going to have

  180. is just for marshmallows and hot dogs

  181. and entertainment.

  182. But I can tell you,

  183. if you were in a situation

  184. where you were nearly freezing to death

  185. and you were trying to get the tinder going

  186. and nothing was happening

  187. and you're wondering

  188. whether you're going to make it or not,

  189. and finally there's a little flicker

  190. and a little bit of smoke

  191. and fire.

  192. Every context makes a difference.

  193. And here is the apostle

  194. bringing this issue

  195. of the centrality of the resurrection

  196. into focus for believers

  197. and he says,

  198. listen,

  199. I'm telling you something

  200. that is supremely important

  201. and you need to pay attention to.

  202. It is the resurrection

  203. of the Lord Jesus Christ from the dead.

  204. I want you to understand

  205. that the issue

  206. that we are dealing with this morning

  207. is that there's no salvation

  208. apart from the resurrection.

  209. I remember talking with an individual

  210. not too long ago

  211. and the comment was made

  212. that really, you know,

  213. Jesus was a pretty good person

  214. and he really gave us a great model

  215. but it's not that important

  216. that he existed.

  217. There are others that say,

  218. well, maybe Jesus did exist

  219. as a historical figure

  220. but the fact of the matter is

  221. is that he just died

  222. and that was it.

  223. I'll tell you something,

  224. apart from the resurrection,

  225. we have no hope of salvation

  226. and we have no confidence at all

  227. not only in eternity

  228. but in victory in this life

  229. and we're going to get into that

  230. a little bit more

  231. and understand it this morning.

  232. As we look at the passage

  233. and we think about apostolic preaching,

  234. what I want you to understand

  235. is that apostolic preaching,

  236. the preaching of the apostles

  237. was something that held together

  238. and was consistent throughout.

  239. When you ask three different people

  240. what happened in a particular incident,

  241. one of the things

  242. that we usually find out

  243. is that everybody had

  244. a different perspective.

  245. Isn't that right?

  246. You saw the accident,

  247. I saw the accident,

  248. somebody else saw the accident,

  249. two people were involved

  250. in the accident

  251. and most of the time

  252. they have two different stories,

  253. particularly if they're trying

  254. to determine who was right

  255. and who was wrong

  256. for the sake of insurance, right?

  257. Oh no, I waited for the light,

  258. it was green

  259. and you were the one

  260. who drove through

  261. and broadsided me or whatever,

  262. you know, there's always an issue

  263. and we come at this issue

  264. of determining what is right

  265. by paying attention

  266. to how it fits together

  267. and marvelously,

  268. the preaching of the apostles

  269. have this unity that comes about

  270. because God is the one

  271. who gave the scriptures to us

  272. and over 2,000 plus years,

  273. thousands of years,

  274. he gave the scriptures

  275. through about 40 different authors,

  276. he gave it in three different languages,

  277. he gave it in all different

  278. kinds of settings

  279. and yet it all fits together

  280. and we can track the reality

  281. of what Christ Jesus came to do

  282. and what he did.

  283. And so this morning

  284. as we think about

  285. the importance of apostolic preaching

  286. on the resurrection,

  287. let me kind of remind you

  288. of the importance

  289. of apostolic preaching

  290. by having you turn

  291. to a passage just for a second

  292. in Acts chapter 2 verse 42.

    Acts 2:42

  293. The early church,

  294. when they gathered together,

  295. one of the things

  296. that was at the heart

  297. of their gathering

  298. was the preaching

  299. and teaching of the apostles.

  300. And so when we are here

  301. this morning,

  302. in essence,

  303. what I am doing

  304. and what Pastor Shearer

  305. has been doing

  306. and what Pastor Andrew

  307. continues to do

  308. is draw attention

  309. to the preaching

  310. or the truth

  311. of the apostles.

  312. Acts chapter 2 verse 42.

    Acts 2:42

  313. They devoted themselves

  314. to the apostles' teaching.

  315. When people got together,

  316. the thing was at the heart

  317. of their gathering

  318. was apostolic teaching.

  319. There's no doubt

  320. of the importance

  321. of apostolic teaching

  322. and one of the illustrations

  323. of it is that

  324. most of you this morning

  325. have a copy of the Bible

  326. either in your hand

  327. or on your phone.

  328. I was kind of intrigued

  329. this morning

  330. when Megan read the scriptures.

  331. Where are you, Megan?

  332. You're somewhere out here.

  333. Megan, Megan, Megan.

  334. Ah, there you are.

  335. Did you notice that

  336. instead of pulling out

  337. the sacred text,

  338. she used the sacred phone?

  339. I grew up in a time

  340. where Bible quizzing

  341. and sword drills

  342. were really important.

  343. How many of you

  344. did sword drills?

  345. I mean, it's an age-specific issue.

  346. You know, all of you

  347. who are, yeah,

  348. sword drills?

  349. What are sword drills?

  350. Probably all depends

  351. on whether I have 3G

  352. or 4G

  353. or whatever else it is.

  354. You know, it's like, bang.

  355. We used to have to know

  356. where John was

  357. without just hitting

  358. a little icon

  359. that pulled up John.

  360. You know, it's like,

  361. John is about,

  362. here's the thing

  363. I want you to focus on.

  364. The apostolic preaching

  365. put a great deal

  366. of emphasis on the fact

  367. that this book

  368. is God's Word

  369. and we are gathered

  370. around it

  371. because it is God's Word.

  372. We're dependent,

  373. and thankfully so,

  374. on the clear revelation

  375. of God

  376. of what truth actually is.

  377. And so when the apostles

  378. taught that the resurrection

  379. happened

  380. and it is essential,

  381. we recognize that

  382. to be entirely true

  383. and we hang on to it

  384. and we hold on

  385. and believe that it is valuable

  386. and our hearts are thus blessed

  387. by what we find

  388. in the Scriptures.

  389. So let me mark with you

  390. just kind of a broad swing

  391. of the apostolic preaching

  392. on the cross

  393. and the resurrection.

  394. Peter,

  395. in every sermon

  396. recorded in the book of Acts,

  397. we don't know how many

  398. he preached,

  399. but in every sermon

  400. recorded in the book of Acts,

  401. and Peter was one of the

  402. predominant preachers

  403. in the book of Acts,

  404. every sermon

  405. has a central theme

  406. that includes

  407. the resurrection

  408. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  409. The very first sermon

  410. on the day of Pentecost,

  411. how did Jesus start out?

  412. Does anybody remember?

  413. He let people know

  414. that they had crucified Jesus

  415. and that this same Jesus

  416. who they had crucified

  417. was risen again

  418. and he was waiting

  419. to be the judge

  420. of the whole earth

  421. and they realizing

  422. what had happened,

  423. what they'd done,

  424. they cried out,

  425. what must we do?

  426. In every place

  427. that Peter preached,

  428. the resurrection was central.

  429. It's interesting,

  430. if you were to go

  431. to 1 Peter,

  432. one of two of his last letters

  433. to the church

  434. before his execution,

  435. we find there

  436. that the resurrection

  437. was part of the thematic flow

  438. of what he dealt with

  439. in his last letter.

  440. Paul,

  441. in addition to our text today,

  442. in which he gives

  443. an extended lesson

  444. on the importance

  445. of the resurrection,

  446. he dealt with the fact

  447. of the resurrection

  448. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  449. over and over again.

  450. It was part of,

  451. and we're going to see

  452. some of the illustrations

  453. of that later,

  454. but you couldn't dive

  455. into the apostles' teaching

  456. and not bump right

  457. into the fact

  458. that the resurrection

  459. for Paul

  460. was very, very important.

  461. If you were to ask me

  462. what are the very essentials

  463. of our faith,

  464. I would tell you

  465. that it's the resurrection.

  466. It's the fact

  467. that the Lord Jesus Christ

  468. died for my sins,

  469. that's important,

  470. but if the resurrection

  471. hadn't happened,

  472. I really wouldn't have

  473. any reason for faith.

  474. I remember a number

  475. of years ago,

  476. Pastor Saul and I

  477. were at the Basics Conference,

  478. and we heard Phil Johnson.

  479. Phil Johnson was a,

  480. he has two PhDs,

  481. one from Oxford

  482. and whatever else

  483. in mathematics,

  484. way beyond me,

  485. and he was actually,

  486. he was actually given

  487. the opportunity

  488. of debating Richard Dawkins.

  489. Richard Dawkins.

  490. How many of you

  491. heard the name

  492. Richard Dawkins?

  493. A phenomenally intelligent guy,

  494. and they were having

  495. this back and forth

  496. and really going at it,

  497. and Phil Johnson

  498. was actually doing

  499. quite well in that debate,

  500. and so Richard Dawkins

  501. kind of descended

  502. to sarcasm.

  503. How many of you know

  504. that when you're

  505. not winning an argument,

  506. sarcasm is a great tool?

  507. You're acting

  508. just like your mother.

  509. That really works well

  510. if you want to go home.

  511. So, at the end

  512. of the argument,

  513. Richard decided

  514. it was time

  515. to pull his trump out,

  516. and here's what he said.

  517. You just believe

  518. in the resurrection

  519. of Jesus,

  520. and that's all

  521. that your faith rests on.

  522. Yes?

  523. Yeah, it's okay.

  524. I'm not bothered by that.

  525. And we have Paul saying,

  526. man, the resurrection

  527. is critical.

  528. We find not only

  529. Peter and Paul,

  530. but we also find John

  531. speaking about Christ's

  532. victory over death,

  533. and a number of times

  534. it appears at various places

  535. in both the Gospel of John

  536. and 1 John,

  537. but also in the book

  538. of Revelation,

  539. and I want you to turn

  540. just for a moment

  541. to the way in which

  542. we find Jesus introduced

  543. in the book of Revelation.

  544. Revelation 1, verse 18.

    Revelation 1:18

  545. As you're turning there

  546. this morning,

  547. I wonder whether you were

  548. kind of cross-referencing

  549. the words of our last song

  550. with a passage in the book

  551. of Revelation

  552. where the songwriter

  553. kind of attaches

  554. some of the wording

  555. that we were singing

  556. with the fact

  557. that Jesus is the one

  558. who died and rose again.

  559. Look at verse 18.

  560. Revelation 1, verse 18.

    Revelation 1:18

  561. Fear not,

  562. actually in verse 17,

  563. fear not,

  564. I am the first and the last,

  565. the living,

  566. I died,

  567. and behold,

  568. I'm alive,

  569. and forevermore

  570. I have the keys

  571. of death and Hades.

  572. Here is Jesus explaining

  573. He is indeed

  574. the one who died

  575. for our sins

  576. and rose again.

  577. I want you to think

  578. with me now,

  579. not only the fact

  580. that the resurrection

  581. was woven into the fabric

  582. of apostolic preaching.

  583. You talk to the apostle,

  584. he's going to come

  585. to the resurrection.

  586. Go talk about it often.

  587. I want you to think

  588. why it would be that way.

  589. Why is the resurrection

  590. so important,

  591. particularly in our faith

  592. and our understanding

  593. of what Christ

  594. has done for us?

  595. For one thing,

  596. the resurrection affirms

  597. the deity

  598. and the judgment of Christ.

  599. It affirms the deity

  600. and the judgment of Christ.

  601. How do we know

  602. that Christ is indeed God

  603. and that He is going

  604. to be the judge

  605. of the whole earth?

  606. Turn in your Bibles

  607. to Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17:31

  608. verse 31.

  609. We find in Acts chapter 17

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  610. that Paul is having a debate

  611. with Athenians.

  612. In the ancient world

  613. without electronic devices

  614. and without TV and a radio,

  615. the thing that you wanted to do

  616. in terms of entertaining yourself

  617. was go down and listen

  618. to the wandering philosopher

  619. who would show up

  620. at the market

  621. and He would try

  622. to foist off on you

  623. His current idea

  624. and you had

  625. very active debates

  626. and it was

  627. what they did.

  628. And here is Paul

  629. shows up in the Agora

  630. and he takes advantage

  631. of all these statues

  632. and various idols.

  633. He says,

  634. hey listen,

  635. let me talk to you

  636. about the unknown God

  637. that you've got a statue to.

  638. And at the end

  639. of his sermon,

  640. look there at verse 31,

  641. here's what he says.

  642. He says,

  643. because He has fixed the day

  644. on which He will judge

  645. the world in righteousness

  646. by a man

  647. whom He has appointed.

  648. The day is coming

  649. that sin

  650. is going

  651. to be judged.

  652. Do you believe that?

  653. Let me say it again slowly.

  654. The day is coming

  655. when sin

  656. is going

  657. to be judged.

  658. Tim Bauer and I

  659. were

  660. under the bridge,

  661. was that 70?

  662. I think that's 70,

  663. yeah.

  664. And we were

  665. bringing oatmeal

  666. and different things

  667. to a man

  668. who's under the bridge.

  669. He's been there

  670. for as long

  671. as I've been going.

  672. And I can remember

  673. the first time

  674. Tim and I went

  675. and said,

  676. hey,

  677. can we pray for you?

  678. That's one of the things

  679. we normally do.

  680. Nah, I'm good.

  681. He said,

  682. I'm good for about

  683. two, three months.

  684. I'm good, I'm good.

  685. Every time we'd go,

  686. we brought him food

  687. and started bringing him

  688. AAA batteries

  689. for his light.

  690. Today,

  691. or last yesterday

  692. when we said,

  693. hey,

  694. how can we pray for you?

  695. He says,

  696. yeah,

  697. I'd like God

  698. to smite those thieves

  699. that stole my stuff.

  700. He said,

  701. is God in the smiting

  702. business still?

  703. Where are you,

  704. Tim?

  705. You're out here somewhere.

  706. Thank you.

  707. Remember that?

  708. Is God in the smiting

  709. business still?

  710. And Tim and I

  711. usually take turns.

  712. You know,

  713. we go back and forth.

  714. Tim has a shot at him.

  715. I have a shot at him.

  716. We kind of,

  717. you know,

  718. good cop,

  719. bad cop,

  720. that kind of thing.

  721. So,

  722. it was my turn this time.

  723. I said,

  724. well,

  725. I got to tell you,

  726. you know,

  727. I hope God is as patient

  728. with them as he's been

  729. with me.

  730. And we got to talking

  731. about the fact

  732. God does judge sin.

  733. I'm really glad

  734. that he's very patient

  735. about that,

  736. aren't you?

  737. And,

  738. and here is Paul

  739. preaching

  740. and he says,

  741. let me tell you something.

  742. The day is coming

  743. when God is going

  744. to judge sin

  745. and he will judge

  746. the world in righteousness,

  747. verse 31,

  748. by a man whom

  749. he has appointed

  750. and of this

  751. he has given assurance

  752. to all

  753. by raising him

  754. from the dead.

  755. How do you know

  756. it's going to happen?

  757. Because Jesus

  758. came back from the dead.

  759. Oh,

  760. that's frightening

  761. to stop and think about that.

  762. The one

  763. who died

  764. to pay the penalty

  765. for sin

  766. is going to be

  767. the one

  768. who judges

  769. all who reject

  770. the offer of salvation

  771. that is freely given

  772. through the blood

  773. of Christ

  774. who has made

  775. sacrifice

  776. and satisfied

  777. the judgment of God.

  778. Some of you

  779. sitting here this morning

  780. thinking to yourself,

  781. I don't have any time

  782. for Jesus.

  783. I'm quite good

  784. myself.

  785. Thank you.

  786. You're wrong.

  787. You're wrong.

  788. Every now and then

  789. your conscience

  790. bears witness

  791. with you

  792. that there is

  793. a darkness

  794. and a blackness

  795. in your heart

  796. that you

  797. can't solve.

  798. And beloved,

  799. the day is coming

  800. that that heart

  801. will be judged

  802. and the one

  803. who judges it

  804. will be the one

  805. who died

  806. to make payment

  807. for sin.

  808. And he will judge

  809. your hard

  810. and bitter

  811. rebellion

  812. and rejection.

  813. And the fact

  814. that he rose

  815. from the dead

  816. is going to be

  817. a significant part

  818. of that judgment.

  819. Well,

  820. I want you to

  821. recognize

  822. that not only

  823. does the resurrection

  824. affirm the deity

  825. of Christ

  826. in his judgment,

  827. but our faith

  828. rests.

  829. It is solidly

  830. based on the

  831. resurrection

  832. of the Lord

  833. Jesus Christ.

  834. Look at 1 Corinthians.

  835. You're there

  836. in Acts

  837. for a moment,

  838. but go to 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 14 chapter mention

  839. chapter 14

  840. or 15,

  841. beginning there

  842. in verse 14.

  843. Here's Paul

  844. arguing extensively

  845. for the effect

  846. of the resurrection

  847. on gospel living.

  848. Everybody look up

  849. so you know

  850. I'm kind of

  851. talking at you

  852. here a little bit.

  853. Hey.

  854. There is a disconnect

  855. today

  856. between gospel

  857. profession

  858. and gospel living.

  859. Do you know

  860. what I mean by that?

  861. I mean,

  862. people,

  863. I think we're

  864. seeing kind of

  865. a decline

  866. of people

  867. who have

  868. anything to do

  869. with Christianity,

  870. but we still bump

  871. into a lot of people

  872. who say,

  873. well,

  874. I'm a Christian,

  875. but when it comes

  876. to it,

  877. their behavior,

  878. their lifestyle,

  879. the things that

  880. they engage in,

  881. the things they care

  882. about have nothing

  883. to do with eternity

  884. and the glory

  885. of Christ.

  886. They're profoundly

  887. self-focused

  888. and as carnal

  889. as the unbelieving

  890. world.

  891. Paul,

  892. in this passage,

  893. he says,

  894. if Christ is not

  895. raised,

  896. then our preaching

  897. is in vain

  898. and your faith

  899. is in vain.

  900. We are even found

  901. to be misrepresenting

  902. God because we

  903. testified about God

  904. that He raised

  905. Christ.

  906. whom He,

  907. if He did not

  908. raise,

  909. if it is not,

  910. if it is,

  911. sorry,

  912. that He raised

  913. Christ,

  914. whom He did not

  915. raise,

  916. if it is true

  917. that the dead

  918. are not raised.

  919. For if the dead

  920. are not raised,

  921. not even Christ

  922. has been raised.

  923. And if Christ

  924. has not been raised,

  925. your faith is futile

  926. and you are still

  927. in your sins.

  928. Now I want you

  929. to stop and think

  930. about that just

  931. for a moment.

  932. What Paul says

  933. is that Christ

  934. has not risen

  935. from the dead,

  936. I am still

  937. in my sins.

  938. You know

  939. what that means?

  940. I still stand

  941. condemned before

  942. a holy God

  943. and the wrath

  944. of God

  945. still is over me

  946. and ready to fall

  947. upon me

  948. at the appointed

  949. time of His judgment.

  950. That's a pretty

  951. sobering thought.

  952. Look there,

  953. if you will,

  954. as Paul works

  955. his way through

  956. the passage.

  957. He says this,

  958. then he's talking

  959. about the resurrection.

  960. He says,

  961. verse 20,

  962. but in fact,

  963. Christ has been

  964. raised from the dead,

  965. the first fruits

  966. of those who have

  967. fallen asleep.

  968. So when we think

  969. about Christian living,

  970. I want you to recognize

  971. that when you think

  972. about the resurrection,

  973. this is the day,

  974. this is the Sunday,

  975. we kind of put

  976. an extra emphasis

  977. and say,

  978. the resurrection

  979. is profoundly important

  980. to me.

  981. Well,

  982. if it is,

  983. practically speaking,

  984. are you living

  985. like a saint

  986. that shows the power

  987. of the resurrection

  988. in your holy living?

  989. Listen to the argument

  990. that Paul makes.

  991. Okay?

  992. He says this,

  993. verse 19,

  994. if in Christ

  995. we have hope

  996. in this life only,

  997. we are of all people

  998. most to be pitied.

  999. In essence,

  1000. what he is saying

  1001. is this,

  1002. is if our hope

  1003. in Christ

  1004. is only now,

  1005. then the restraint

  1006. that godliness brings

  1007. is worthless

  1008. and irrelevant.

1009. Why do you not do

  1010. some of the things

  1011. you do?

  1012. I'll give you

  1013. an illustration.

  1014. Many of you

  1015. may not know this,

  1016. but Wilson Road

  1017. is a contributor

  1018. to revenue

  1019. of state police

  1020. and the,

1021. you know how it works?

  1022. There are actually

  1023. parts of,

  1024. of Wilson Road

  1025. that are marked

  1026. off as 35.

  1027. I do not understand

  1028. the city fathers

  1029. because once you

  1030. cross broad,

  1031. there's a sign

  1032. right there

  1033. that says 55.

  1034. And there has been

  1035. a state police band

  1036. that's been sitting

1037. there by the oil tanks

  1038. for the last week.

1039. I saw him pull somebody

  1040. over and I thought

  1041. to myself,

  1042. no to self.

  1043. 34.

  1044. 34.

  1045. 34.

  1046. 34.

  1047. Okay.

  1048. We do things

  1049. because we know

  1050. what the outcome,

  1051. remember right?

  1052. We do things

  1053. because we anticipate

  1054. an outcome.

  1055. If Jesus did not

  1056. rise from the dead,

  1057. godly living

  1058. has less motive

  1059. and less blessing.

  1060. Now,

  1061. is there benefit

1062. to living a godly life?

  1063. Yes.

  1064. But the supreme

  1065. blessing is this,

  1066. is the fact

  1067. of Christ's resurrection

  1068. and the fact

1069. I'm going to see him again

1070. and I want to hear him

  1071. say what?

  1072. Well done,

1073. thou good and faithful servant.

  1074. See,

  1075. our faith rests

  1076. in the reality

  1077. of Christ.

  1078. I'll tell you

  1079. another thing.

  1080. The resurrection

  1081. encourages us

  1082. to believe

  1083. that we can change.

  1084. Turn in your Bible

  1085. to Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1086. One of the things

  1087. I love

  1088. about gospel preaching

1089. and when I say that,

  1090. just gospel ministry,

  1091. is being able

  1092. to say to people,

  1093. you don't have to

1094. stay the way you are.

  1095. How many of you

1096. heard me say that before?

  1097. You don't have to

1098. stay the way you are.

  1099. You don't have to

1100. stay the way you are.

1101. The truth of the matter

  1102. is that

1103. probably if we got past

  1104. the makeup

  1105. and the hairstyle

  1106. or whatever else,

  1107. most of us here

  1108. are not overly impressed

  1109. with who we are.

1110. There are things about us

1111. we know we don't like.

  1112. Am I right?

  1113. Even now.

1114. I remember when my dad

  1115. and mom moved in

  1116. next door

1117. and I'd been pastoring here

1118. for probably 25 years or so

  1119. and I don't want to say

1120. that I was going around

1121. thinking I was pretty spiritual

  1122. but I really didn't realize

  1123. how much stubbornness

1124. was still in my heart

  1125. at about 63 or 64

  1126. and having my dad

  1127. live next to me

  1128. and serve him 24-7

  1129. I began learning things

  1130. about humility

  1131. and servanthood

1132. that I needed to learn

1133. and I am very thankful

  1134. that Christ's resurrection

  1135. assures me

  1136. I can change.

  1137. Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1:19

  1138. verse 19

  1139. here is Paul praying

  1140. for the believers

  1141. there in Ephesus

  1142. and he says

1143. in what he wants them

  1144. to know the immeasurable

  1145. greatness of his power

  1146. towards us who believe

  1147. according to the working

  1148. of his great might

1149. that he worked in Christ

  1150. when he raised him

  1151. from the dead

  1152. and seated him

  1153. at his right hand

  1154. in the heavenly places.

  1155. You see,

  1156. Paul is praying here

  1157. that these believers

  1158. in Ephesus

  1159. would understand

  1160. the sweetness

  1161. of the gospel

1162. and that it would have

1163. an effect on their life.

1164. I've got to tell you something.

  1165. If you're sitting here

  1166. this morning

  1167. and you profess

  1168. to know Christ

  1169. but you cannot

1170. look in the rearview mirror

  1171. and see the evidence

1172. of the power of God

  1173. changing you

  1174. from glory to glory

  1175. which it says

  1176. in 2 Corinthians chapter 3

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

1177. you have a good reason

1178. to kind of ask yourself

1179. well am I really saved?

  1180. And I think that's

  1181. an appropriate question.

  1182. Here's the fact.

  1183. Christ Jesus

1184. who raised from the dead

  1185. serves as an illustration

1186. of the power of God

1187. in the life of the believer

  1188. which is available

  1189. to help us stop

1190. being who we used to be.

1191. Do we have to stay

  1192. bitter and unforgiving?

  1193. And the answer is

  1194. no.

1195. Do we have to stay

  1196. a person who is

  1197. consumed by covetousness

  1198. and greed?

  1199. No.

1200. Do we have to stay

  1201. a person who is

  1202. absolutely under

  1203. the affliction of immorality

1204. and the burden of sin?

  1205. No.

  1206. Why?

  1207. Because we have been

  1208. saved by the power

  1209. of Christ

  1210. and His power

  1211. is at work

  1212. changing us.

1213. I want you to understand

  1214. one more thing.

  1215. His resurrection

  1216. guarantees

  1217. our resurrection.

1218. last week I was out

  1219. to the graveside

1220. of my mom and dad

  1221. and

  1222. there are a lot

  1223. of friends

  1224. that are

  1225. momentarily resting

  1226. out in Alton Cemetery.

  1227. Judah and I

1228. got a plot out there

  1229. but it's only

  1230. a temporary parking

  1231. place.

1232. I got to tell you

  1233. something.

  1234. Why is that?

  1235. Listen to what it

  1236. says in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15:20

  1237. chapter 15

  1238. verse 20.

  1239. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15:20

  1240. chapter 15

  1241. verse 20.

  1242. But in fact

  1243. Christ has been

  1244. raised from the dead

  1245. the first fruits

  1246. of those

  1247. who have fallen

  1248. asleep.

  1249. I like that.

  1250. I like that.

1251. You know what it's saying?

  1252. Christ is just

  1253. kind of a

  1254. token

  1255. reminder

  1256. of the fact

  1257. that there are

  1258. others who are

  1259. going to be

  1260. raised again.

  1261. And in the book

  1262. of Daniel

  1263. it says this.

  1264. There will be a

  1265. resurrection to

  1266. judgment and

  1267. eternal condemnation

  1268. and there will be

  1269. a resurrection to

  1270. life and joy and

  1271. peace forever in

  1272. the presence of

  1273. Christ.

  1274. So bring it down

  1275. in practical terms.

  1276. You are going to

  1277. die unless Jesus

  1278. comes back.

  1279. And if you die

  1280. you will either

  1281. be resurrected to

  1282. eternal

  1283. judgment and

  1284. consequences for

  1285. your sin and

  1286. rejection of the

  1287. offer of the

  1288. gospel or you

  1289. are going to be

  1290. resurrected to a

  1291. joyful life in

  1292. the presence of

  1293. the Lord Jesus

  1294. Christ.

  1295. I'm wondering

  1296. this morning

  1297. whether or not

  1298. that matter is

  1299. settled in your

  1300. heart.

  1301. Does that make

  1302. sense?

  1303. I mean at the

  1304. end of the day

  1305. one of the things

  1306. that should mark

  1307. apostolic preaching

  1308. which pastors are

  1309. generally should be

  1310. involved in doing.

  1311. Wouldn't you agree

  1312. with that?

  1313. One of the things

  1314. that marked

  1315. apostolic preaching

  1316. is helping people

  1317. come to grips with

  1318. where they were

  1319. going to spend

  1320. eternity and

  1321. whether or not

  1322. they had come to

  1323. trust in the Lord

  1324. Jesus Christ.

  1325. So listen to me.

  1326. One of the good

  1327. things about Easter

1328. is a lot of people

  1329. show up at a

  1330. service.

  1331. I like that.

  1332. It's good.

  1333. But there are some

  1334. that I don't know.

  1335. And there are some

  1336. who come that I

  1337. don't know to the

1338. point of if you are

  1339. here and you don't

  1340. know the Lord Jesus

  1341. Christ.

  1342. I would plead with

  1343. you this morning

  1344. be reconciled to

  1345. God.

  1346. Do not sit here

  1347. thinking I am

  1348. almost to the

  1349. point of pastor's

  1350. going to wrap this

  1351. up and I've got

  1352. another Easter under

  1353. my belt.

  1354. You got that?

  1355. I want you to

  1356. think to yourself

  1357. I need to know

  1358. where I will spend

  1359. eternity.

  1360. eternity.

  1361. And I need to

  1362. settle it in my

  1363. heart.

  1364. I believe in

  1365. Jesus Christ who

  1366. died for my sins

  1367. and rose again and

  1368. I am trusting in

  1369. him alone for

  1370. salvation.

  1371. Or I'm sitting

  1372. there with my arms

  1373. crossed saying well

  1374. yeah six minutes

  1375. and we're done.

  1376. If you refuse the

  1377. offer of salvation

  1378. you will face

  1379. Christ as judge

  1380. not as savior.

  1381. And I would plead

  1382. with you and Christ

  1383. said.

  1384. in Christ's

  1385. dead.

  1386. Be reconciled to

  1387. God.

  1388. Let's pray.

  1389. Precious Father

  1390. we are thankful

  1391. for the blessing

  1392. of the resurrection

  1393. of the Lord Jesus

  1394. Christ from the

  1395. dead.

  1396. And for all that

  1397. that means to us

  1398. as believers.

  1399. I pray that this

  1400. morning we who are

  1401. believers would have

  1402. our hearts lifted up

  1403. to glory in the

  1404. cross.

  1405. To delight in the

  1406. fact that we serve

  1407. a risen savior.

1408. I pray Lord that the

  1409. lives that we live

  1410. the conversations

  1411. that we have

  1412. the attitudes of

  1413. our hearts would

  1414. reflect his victory.

1415. And I do pray for

  1416. those that are here

  1417. today that do not

  1418. know Christ.

  1419. That they would walk

  1420. out of here either

  1421. yielding to him or

  1422. profoundly uncomfortable

1423. at the reality of the

  1424. stubborn darkness of

  1425. their heart.

  1426. Bring them to

  1427. conviction by whatever

  1428. means you see fit.

  1429. spirit.

1430. And we pray this in

  1431. Jesus name.

  1432. Amen.

  1433. John Lee

  1434. Disson singing.

  1435. Thank you.

  1436. Let me tell you

  1437. something.

  1438. There's no better

  1439. time to come to

  1440. Jesus than now.

  1441. Do you understand

  1442. that?

1443. You can ask him to

  1444. save you where you

  1445. sit.

  1446. You can pray while

  1447. you are singing.

  1448. If you are here

  1449. today and you need

  1450. Christ as your

1451. savior I got to tell

  1452. you there's no better

  1453. day than this.

1454. One of the ladies in

1455. our church came up to

1456. me and said do you

  1457. know that this is

  1458. ten years from now

1459. that I ten years in

1460. the past I was saved

  1461. on Easter Sunday.

  1462. Not a bad idea.

  1463. Okay.

  1464. Don't let it pass.
