  1. Leading up to Jesus' crucifixion.

  2. Through the course of our message this morning, I want us to come to grips with the fact that Jesus was not a victim of his circumstances.

  3. ! Jesus was the master of every circumstance that we'll look at this morning.

  4. He is in complete control. He is in command of all that we will see.

  5. And we'll look at the details of that as we jump into our passage for today.

  6. And as we look at this new segment of time from chapter 18 to chapter 19, the events that lead up to his crucifixion, then his actual crucifixion,

  7. I want us to understand that the journey that Jesus takes is not just a journey that he is on,

  8. but a journey that he intends for followers of him to emulate.

  9. That there is a way of the cross that Jesus moves through in these next two chapters.

  10. And the model that he sets will be the model for us as those who are followers of Christ as we emulate the way of the cross.

  11. Are you a follower of Christ this morning?

  12. You will emulate the Savior's example, as we'll look at specifically this morning, the example of submission.

  13. We'll see coming to the surface the supremacy of Christ in all that takes place, and yet his active submission to the Father's will.

  14. In a book written by David Platt, maybe you've read the book Radical, he recounts this story of going to Indonesia.

  15. And surprisingly, Indonesia has the most Muslims of any other country in the world, heavily populated with Muslims.

  16. And he's teaching in a seminary there, and those who are intending to graduate from this seminary have as a requirement the need for them to plant a church in a new location there in Indonesia,

  17. and to lead 30 individuals to faith, and to baptize them, and to essentially plant a church in a new location.

  18. Well, sitting there in his classroom was a man by the name of Radin, who gives his testimony.

  19. And this young man, in looking at David Platt, with fire in his eyes, recounts this story of how God worked this out in his own life.

  20. There he is going into this community and beginning to share the gospel with these Muslims who are in this community.

  21. And wouldn't you know who shows up at the door is a witch doctor, who are apparently very prevalent in Indonesia,

  22. and challenging this young man named Radin to say,

  23. listen, why don't you meet me outside, we're going to take care of business.

  24. Now, before Radin had become a believer,

  25. he had done some work in terms of becoming very adept in ninja jiu-jitsu.

  26. So he's thinking about this situation, and he knows that he could quite handily take care of this witch doctor without any problem.

  27. But as he begins to exit this house, he is prompted by the spirit who speaks to his heart,

  28. says,

  29. Radin, instead of taking matters into your own hands, trust me in this situation.

  30. So Radin takes a chair, and he sits outside this house, and he faces this witch doctor,

  31. and he says to him,

  32. the Lord will handle this situation.

  33. I do not need to fight you with my fists.

  34. The Lord will deal with you as he chooses.

  35. And in the next few moments,

  36. this witch doctor begins to choke and to gasp for air.

  37. It gets the attention of the people with whom Radin had just been sharing the gospel with,

  38. and now the villagers begin to come and to observe this situation that's unfolding in front of them.

  39. And within moments, this witch doctor is lying on the ground, dead.

  40. His decision to yield and to surrender,

  41. to submit this situation to the power of God,

  42. leads to a dramatic display of God's supremacy in this situation.

  43. And as a result, many of the villagers not only hear the gospel,

  44. but come to faith in Jesus Christ.

  45. The same is true for us this morning.

  46. The same is true for you.

  47. Whatever situation in which you find yourself today,

  48. however small or large,

  49. there is a demand for your life as a follower of Christ

  50. to determine what you will do.

  51. Will you take matters into your own hands,

  52. or will you surrender and submit

  53. to the guidance and instruction of the Scripture

  54. and let God's supremacy work itself out in your life?

  55. There is a privilege of those of us who are followers of Christ

  56. to see the supremacy of God show up in this world.

  57. It's not our supremacy.

  58. It is His.

  59. And as we submit to the Father's will,

  60. in the various circumstances in which you find yourself,

  61. you will see the supremacy of Christ come through for you.

  62. You ever find yourself taking matters into your own hands?

  63. Well, the way of the cross is the way of submission.

  64. Look with me at John chapter 18

    John 18 chapter mention

  65. as I read these first couple of verses.

  66. We're going to take this a couple of verses at a time.

  67. Kind of break this down.

  68. And what I want you to see is

  69. I want you to see through this passage

  70. the complete supremacy of Christ

  71. and yet His full surrender to the Father's will.

  72. It begins this way.

  73. When Jesus had spoken these words,

  74. He went out with His disciples across the Kindred Valley

  75. where there was a garden,

  76. which He and His disciples entered.

  77. Now Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place.

  78. For Jesus had often met there with His disciples.

  79. So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers

  80. and some officers from the chief priests

  81. and some officers, excuse me,

  82. and the Pharisees went there with lanterns

  83. and torches and weapons.

  84. The public ministry of Jesus had come to a conclusion.

  85. Hear the finality of the first few words of this chapter.

  86. When Jesus had spoken these words,

  87. the message of the Father had been delivered.

  88. The secret, private information

  89. that Jesus sought to deliver to His disciples

  90. had been conveyed.

  91. And now the culmination of all that Jesus had come to do

  92. was about to take place

  93. in His arrest, in His crucifixion,

  94. and then in His resurrection.

  95. Jesus had shown up.

  96. He had come near.

  97. The Messiah was at hand.

  98. His message was accessible to the people.

  99. The Jews saw Jesus

  100. and His display of miracles,

  101. casting out demons,

  102. healing those who were sick,

  103. exercising authority over the elements.

  104. They saw Jesus.

  105. They saw the divine.

  106. They saw God face to face.

  107. And yet, as we'll see

  108. in these next few chapters,

  109. instead of acceptance,

  110. there was rejection.

  111. It's almost too hard to believe

  112. that those who saw Jesus up close and personal

  113. would be those who would reject

  114. the very one who came to rescue them.

  115. And yet,

  116. for those of us who have grown up

  117. in a church,

  118. for many of you who have been here at Maranatha

  119. for years and years and years,

  120. for those of us who have heard about

  121. the significance of making Jesus

  122. the Lord of our life,

  123. who have heard the faithful teaching

  124. of the Scriptures,

  125. unfortunately,

  126. we find ourselves in a similar situation

  127. like the disciples

  128. and like the Jews,

  129. who instead of accept

  130. the message and the knowledge about Jesus,

  131. we choose to take matters into our own hands,

  132. we choose

  133. to do things our way

  134. instead of submitting

  135. to the will of the Father.

  136. And in doing this,

  137. we might say,

  138. God, you are strong,

  139. but I'm stronger.

  140. God, you are good,

  141. but I'm better.

  142. God, you are wise,

  143. but I really don't trust you

  144. in this situation.

  145. Now, we wouldn't say that

  146. in public,

  147. but in our hearts,

  148. that is the posture

  149. of what's taking place

  150. when we refuse to submit

  151. to the knowledge we have about God.

  152. You are sovereign,

  153. you are all wise,

  154. you are all powerful,

  155. but in this situation, God,

  156. I just want things to go my way.

  157. And as we look at Jesus' example

  158. this morning,

  159. as we see the way of the cross,

  160. we will see

  161. the way of the cross

  162. is the way of surrender.

  163. The way of the cross

  164. is the way of submission

  165. to the Father.

  166. First,

  167. in these first three verses,

  168. we see that Jesus

  169. determined the details

  170. of his arrest.

  171. Jesus determined

  172. the details of his arrest.

  173. I want you to see

  174. the supremacy of Christ

  175. in all things,

  176. and yet,

  177. in the midst of supremacy,

  178. there is surrender.

  179. There is submission.

  180. We see it in so many different ways.

  181. I just want to highlight a few.

  182. First, we see

  183. the surrender of Christ

  184. and the supremacy of Christ

  185. in terms of the timing

  186. of his arrest.

  187. The timing of his arrest.

  188. Here in verse 1,

  189. when Jesus had spoken

  190. these words,

  191. he went out with the disciples

  192. across the book

  193. Brook Kidron.

  194. His ministry,

  195. public ministry,

  196. was over.

  197. And now was the time

  198. for Jesus

  199. to be killed,

  200. to be handed over

  201. to the Gentiles,

  202. to be delivered up

  203. for crucifixion.

  204. Chapters 15

  205. and 16

  206. and 17,

  207. we see Jesus

  208. with his disciples

  209. delivering some final

  210. parting words to them.

  211. They've included

  212. faithful reminders

  213. of things that they have heard

  214. in the past

  215. of Jesus' ministry,

  216. but even new things.

  217. He's concentrated

  218. on his departure.

  219. He's tried to comfort them

  220. with the promise

  221. of the Holy Spirit.

  222. He's warned them

  223. about the conflict

  224. that they would face.

  225. He's consistently

  226. pointed their attention

  227. to the unchangeable reality

  228. of the Father's care.

  229. These final words

  230. were vital

  231. for the ongoing

  232. endurance

  233. of this group of men.

  234. But now that the time

  235. has come,

  236. Jesus now makes his way

  237. with his disciples

  238. outside of the city

  239. of Jerusalem,

  240. and now they begin

  241. their trek

  242. to the Mount of Olives

  243. into the Garden

  244. of Gethsemane.

  245. Jesus was concerned

  246. about this band of men.

  247. He talks about

  248. the great celebration

  249. that they will enjoy

  250. in a future day,

  251. looking forward

  252. to when the Father

  253. would come

  254. and to take them home.

  255. but he has predicted

  256. on at least three occasions

  257. that this moment

  258. would come,

  259. the moment of his

  260. arrest,

  261. the moment of his

  262. crucifixion

  263. and his resurrection.

  264. And now the long

  265. awaited day

  266. was here.

  267. Jesus knew

  268. the timing

  269. of his arrest.

  270. Jesus also knew

  271. the betrayal

  272. in his arrest.

  273. He knew the circumstances

  274. of the betrayal

  275. and the betrayer.

  276. Here we see

  277. in verse 2,

  278. it says,

  279. Now Judas,

  280. who betrayed him,

  281. also knew the place.

  282. Jesus was not surprised

  283. by the man

  284. who stood before him

  285. at this point

  286. of time.

  287. From the beginning

  288. of Judas' time

  289. with the group,

  290. Jesus was well aware

  291. of the way

  292. that he would be

  293. instrumental

  294. in betraying him

  295. to the cross.

  296. Early on

  297. in his ministry,

  298. in the feeding

  299. of the 5,000,

  300. Jesus points

  301. to this very issue

  302. in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  303. Turn with me

  304. there for a moment

  305. as we look

  306. at this together.

  307. John chapter 6,

    John 6:64

  308. verse 64.

  309. Jesus has shared

  310. some difficult words

  311. with the people

  312. who were participating

  313. in the feeding

  314. of the 5,000.

  315. And as a result

  316. of the difficult words,

  317. it says that

  318. many of his disciples

  319. who heard it

  320. then left him.

  321. But in verse 66,

  322. it says,

  323. After this,

  324. many of his disciples

  325. turned back

  326. and no longer

  327. walked with him.

  328. So Jesus said

  329. to the 12,

  330. Do you want

  331. to go away as well?

  332. Simon Peter asked him,

  333. Lord,

  334. to whom shall we go?

  335. You have the words

  336. of eternal life.

  337. And we believed

  338. and have come

  339. to know

  340. that you are

  341. the Holy One of God.

  342. Jesus answered them,

  343. Did I not choose you,

  344. the 12?

  345. And yet,

  346. one of you

  347. is a devil.

  348. He spoke of Judas,

  349. the son of Simon Iscariot,

  350. for he,

  351. one of the 12,

  352. was going

  353. to betray him.

  354. It's unbelievable

  355. to think

  356. that even

  357. in the selection

  358. process

  359. of his disciples,

  360. as Jesus

  361. submits himself

  362. to the will

  363. of the Father.

  364. He knew exactly

  365. what Judas

  366. would be.

  367. Judas would be

  368. the betrayer.

  369. And all the while,

  370. Judas is participating

  371. with the disciples,

  372. with the 12,

  373. in the ministry

  374. of Jesus,

  375. seeing what he does,

  376. observing the works,

  377. hearing the words,

  378. and even,

  379. at one point,

  380. receiving the power

  381. that Jesus gave

  382. to the 12

  383. to cast out demons

  384. and to do

  385. and perform miracles.

  386. Judas was a

  387. full participant

  388. in the public

  389. ministry

  390. of Jesus.

  391. But Jesus

  392. was not surprised.

  393. Jesus was not

  394. convinced

  395. of Judas'

  396. loyalty.

  397. He knew his heart,

  398. the heart

  399. of a betrayer.

  400. And on this night,

  401. as the disciples

  402. were gathered

  403. for the Passover,

  404. Jesus again

  405. exposes Judas

  406. for what he was.

  407. Turn with me

  408. to John chapter 13

    John 13 chapter mention

  409. now,

  410. verses 10 and 11.

  411. John 13,

  412. 10 and 11.

  413. Jesus has just

  414. washed the disciples'

  415. feet.

  416. Peter protests

  417. and says,

  418. wash not just

  419. my feet,

  420. but just wash

  421. all of me.

  422. Jesus' response

  423. in verse 10,

  424. the one who is

  425. washed does not

  426. need to wash

  427. except for his

  428. feet,

  429. but is

  430. completely

  431. clean.

  432. And you are

  433. clean,

  434. but not every

  435. one of you,

  436. for he knew

  437. who was to

  438. betray him.

  439. That was why

  440. he said,

  441. not all

  442. of you are

  443. clean.

  444. Jesus knew

  445. the heart

  446. of Judas.

  447. Jesus knew

  448. his role

  449. in being the

  450. betrayer,

  451. in turning

  452. Jesus over

  453. to the

  454. authorities.

  455. So Jesus

  456. knew the

  457. time,

  458. Jesus knew

  459. the betrayer,

  460. but Jesus

  461. also knew

  462. the place

  463. of his

  464. arrest.

  465. We find that

  466. here at the

  467. end of verse 2.

  468. John chapter

  469. 18,

  470. verse 2,

  471. continues this

  472. way.

  473. Judas,

  474. who betrayed

  475. him,

  476. also knew

  477. the place,

  478. for Jesus

  479. often met

  480. there with

  481. his disciples.

  482. from the

  483. other gospel

  484. records,

  485. we find

  486. that Judas'

  487. heart was

  488. just moving

  489. in the

  490. direction of

  491. this betrayal.

  492. So that

  493. likely on

  494. the very

  495. day that

  496. Judas is

  497. about to

  498. betray Jesus,

  499. he goes

  500. to the

  501. authorities,

  502. to the

  503. religious

  504. authorities,

  505. and he

  506. sells Jesus

  507. out.

  508. Now Judas,

  509. looking for

  510. opportunities,

  511. to betray

  512. Jesus,

  513. finds the

  514. perfect

  515. moment.

  516. Now remember

  517. that during

  518. the Passover

  519. meal,

  520. Jesus concealed

  521. the actual

  522. location of

  523. where that

  524. meal would

  525. take place

  526. by sending

  527. the apostles

  528. into the

  529. city of

  530. Jerusalem to

  531. look for

  532. the man

  533. carrying for

  534. the pitcher

  535. of water.

  536. Jesus

  537. masterfully

  538. understood

  539. that in

  540. order to

  541. have this

  542. meal with

  543. his disciples,

  544. needed to

  545. conceal the

  546. actual location,

  547. otherwise it

  548. might be

  549. jeopardized by

  550. Judas

  551. interfering.

  552. So the

  553. next opportunity

  554. that Judas

  555. would have

  556. is to go

  557. to the

  558. place that

  559. Jesus often

  560. met with

  561. his disciples

  562. and where

  563. was that

  564. place?

  565. We find

  566. that as a

  567. pattern,

  568. Jesus and

  569. his disciples

  570. through this

  571. Passion Week

  572. after teaching

  573. the temple

  574. would go

  575. into the

  576. Mount of

  577. Olives and

  578. that's where

  579. he and his

  580. disciples would

  581. stay for the

  582. night until

  583. the next day.

  584. Listen as I

  585. just read

  586. Luke chapter

    Luke 21:37

  587. 21 verse

  588. 37.

  589. It says

  590. this,

  591. And every

  592. day he was

  593. teaching in

  594. the temple,

  595. but at

  596. night he

  597. went out

  598. and lodged

  599. on the

  600. mount called

  601. Olivet.

  602. And early

  603. in the

  604. morning all

  605. the people

  606. came to

  607. him in

  608. the temple

  609. to hear

  610. him.

  611. Jesus

  612. set Judas

  613. up.

  614. Jesus in

  615. spending time

  616. at the

  617. Mount of

  618. Olives knew

  619. that this

  620. was the

  621. place where

  622. Judas would

  623. bring this

  624. band of

  625. men.

  626. This was

  627. the place

  628. where Judas

  629. would know

  630. that the

  631. twelve

  632. disciples,

  633. the eleven

  634. disciples now

  635. with Jesus

  636. would be.

  637. A place

  638. where Jesus

  639. often found

  640. refreshment.

  641. A place

  642. where Jesus

  643. often was

  644. encouraged,

  645. was strengthened

  646. by the

  647. comfort of

  648. his relationship

  649. with the

  650. Father.

  651. Do you

  652. have any

  653. of those

  654. kinds of

  655. places?

  656. Places of

  657. refreshment,

  658. places of

  659. comfort?

  660. One of the

  661. things that I

  662. like to do

  663. when I visit

  664. different

  665. cities that

  666. I once

  667. lived is I

  668. like to go

  669. to the

  670. places where

  671. I met

  672. with God.

  673. The places

  674. which were

  675. common

  676. locations of

  677. fellowshipping

  678. with him.

  679. Being reminded

  680. of God's

  681. goodness in

  682. that specific

  683. place.

  684. That's what

  685. the Garden

  686. of Gethsemane

  687. was for

  688. Jesus.

  689. Whenever he

  690. was in

  691. Jerusalem,

  692. the Garden

  693. of Gethsemane

  694. and the

  695. Mount of

  696. Olives was

  697. the place

  698. of refreshment,

  699. the place

  700. of communion

  701. with the

  702. Father.

  703. And Judas

  704. knew that's

  705. precisely the

  706. place where

  707. he could find

  708. Jesus at

  709. this point.

  710. Jesus moved

  711. to the

  712. exact location

  713. where he

  714. had been

  715. the previous

  716. nights this

  717. entire week.

  718. And so Judas

  719. knew where to

  720. find him.

  721. Jesus was

  722. masterfully in

  723. control of

  724. the circumstances.

  725. We also find

  726. the participants

  727. in his arrest.

  728. Jesus understood

  729. who would be

  730. involved in

  731. this process.

  732. We find in

  733. verse 3 more

  734. details related

  735. to that.

  736. So Judas,

  737. having procured

  738. a band of

  739. soldiers and

  740. some officers

  741. from the

  742. chief priests

  743. and the

  744. Pharisees went

  745. there,

  746. with lanterns

  747. and torches

  748. and weapons.

  749. Jesus had

  750. predicted in

  751. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  752. 20, he

  753. says,

  754. Behold, we

  755. are going up

  756. to Jerusalem

  757. and the

  758. Son of Man

  759. will be

  760. betrayed to

  761. the chief

  762. priests and

  763. to the

  764. scribes and

  765. they will

  766. condemn him

  767. to death

  768. and deliver

  769. him to

  770. the Gentiles

  771. to mock

  772. him and

  773. to scourge

  774. him and

  775. to crucify

  776. him and

  777. on the

  778. third day

  779. he will

  780. rise.

  781. Jesus knew

  782. who the

  783. players were

  784. going to

  785. be.

  786. Jesus is

  787. not surprised

  788. to see

  789. this band

  790. and multitude

  791. of individuals

  792. show up

  793. to arrest

  794. him.

  795. He knew

  796. who was

  797. coming and

  798. Judas leads

  799. them into

  800. this garden.

  801. Well, who

  802. were they?

  803. Well, a

  804. cohort is a

  805. group of

  806. 600 soldiers.

  807. soldiers.

  808. That's a

  809. significant

  810. group of

  811. individuals

  812. coming to

  813. arrest an

  814. individual who

  815. for up to

  816. this point

  817. had been

  818. all but

  819. peace.

  820. He brings

  821. some officers.

  822. These would

  823. have been the

  824. temple officials,

  825. those given

  826. authority in

  827. the Jewish

  828. realm to

  829. exact some

  830. level of

  831. judgment on

  832. individuals within

  833. the Jewish

  834. community.

  835. And then the

  836. Pharisees who

  837. represented the

  838. authority of the

  839. moral law and

  840. the scripture.

  841. You may ask

  842. yourself, why

  843. so many?

  844. Why torches

  845. and why

  846. lanterns and

  847. why swords

  848. and clubs?

  849. Why the

  850. weaponry?

  851. What is

  852. taking place

  853. here?

  854. Well, Jesus

  855. had avoided

  856. life-threatening

  857. situations on

  858. numerous occasions

  859. leading up to

  860. this point.

  861. We find in

  862. several occasions

  863. through the

  864. gospel of John

  865. alone.

  866. that the

  867. officials came

  868. to arrest

  869. Jesus but

  870. because his

  871. hour had not

  872. yet come,

  873. somehow he

  874. vanished from

  875. their midst or

  876. somehow he

  877. moved through

  878. the crowd.

  879. Somehow he

  880. was able to

  881. hide himself

  882. and escape

  883. their captivity.

  884. In one

  885. particular example

  886. in John

    John 10 chapter mention

  887. chapter 10,

  888. it says,

  889. the Jews took

  890. up stones to

  891. stone him,

  892. therefore they

  893. sought again to

  894. seize him,

  895. but he escaped

  896. out of their

  897. hand.

  898. Well, this

  899. wasn't going to

  900. happen again,

  901. at least not

  902. in their minds.

  903. So they bring

  904. this multitude

  905. of individuals

  906. to ensure that

  907. Jesus could not

  908. escape.

  909. But as we'll

  910. see, Jesus is

  911. not only supreme

  912. over the details

  913. of his arrest,

  914. we'll also see

  915. that Jesus

  916. demonstrates

  917. decisiveness of

  918. his authority.

  919. We see that in

  920. the next several

  921. verses from 4 to

  922. 6.

  923. Jesus demonstrates

  924. the decisiveness

  925. of his authority.

  926. Let me read

  927. this for us.

  928. Then Jesus,

  929. knowing all that

  930. would happen to

  931. him, came forward

  932. and said to

  933. them,

  934. Whom do you

  935. seek?

  936. They answered

  937. him, Jesus of

  938. Nazareth.

  939. Jesus said to

  940. them, I am he.

  941. Judas, who

  942. betrayed him,

  943. was standing

  944. with them.

  945. When Jesus

  946. said to them,

  947. I am he,

  948. they drew

  949. back and

  950. fell to the

  951. ground.

  952. I want you

  953. to notice two

  954. things from

  955. this circumstance

  956. that demonstrate

  957. that Jesus is

  958. in command.

  959. Jesus is showing

  960. decisive authority

  961. in this situation.

  962. First of all,

  963. notice that he

  964. steps forward.

  965. He takes

  966. initiative.

  967. He is moving

  968. to the front.

  969. How would he

  970. do that?

  971. Especially given

  972. what we find in

  973. verse 4.

  974. knowing all

  975. that would

  976. happen to

  977. him, he

  978. moves forward.

  979. Jesus,

  980. understanding the

  981. circumstances, the

  982. events that would

  983. follow in the

  984. next 12 hours,

  985. his crucifixion,

  986. the scourging that

  987. he would

  988. experience,

  989. he steps

  990. forward.

  991. Jesus has been

  992. stepping forward

  993. since leaving

  994. the ministry in

  995. Galilee.

  996. For the last

  997. six months,

  998. Jesus has been

  999. determined to

  1000. move towards the

  1001. direction of the

  1002. cross.

  1003. We find in Luke

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1004. chapter 9 that

  1005. he set his face

  1006. to go to

  1007. Jerusalem.

  1008. He knew exactly

  1009. what was waiting

  1010. for him there and

  1011. he knew the

  1012. Father's will.

  1013. He determined

  1014. to himself that

  1015. he was going to

  1016. follow through

  1017. with God's plan

  1018. for his life.

  1019. He did not run,

  1020. he did not cower,

  1021. he did not hide,

  1022. he did not evade

  1023. their advances,

  1024. he did not retreat,

  1025. but he takes

  1026. command of the

  1027. situation.

  1028. He steps forward

  1029. and he is the

  1030. one to initiate

  1031. this conversation.

  1032. The mob who

  1033. had come to

  1034. manhandle the

  1035. Messiah is

  1036. actually put in

  1037. their place.

  1038. As Jesus,

  1039. not a victim of

  1040. his circumstances,

  1041. takes control

  1042. of this process.

  1043. Who are you

  1044. looking for?

  1045. Jesus says.

  1046. And then they

  1047. respond,

  1048. Jesus of Nazareth.

  1049. Jesus says,

  1050. I am he.

  1051. And with that,

  1052. this mob of

  1053. maybe as many

  1054. as 650 people

  1055. fall backwards

  1056. at the word

  1057. of God.

  1058. Not only does

  1059. Jesus demonstrate

  1060. his decisiveness

  1061. and authority

  1062. through stepping

  1063. forward,

  1064. but he,

  1065. with the word,

  1066. he knocks them

  1067. to the ground.

  1068. He demonstrates

  1069. his power

  1070. over them

  1071. in just a word.

  1072. I want you

  1073. to notice

  1074. the undeniable

  1075. authority

  1076. of the Messiah.

  1077. Undeniable

  1078. authority.

  1079. Jesus will not

  1080. escape.

  1081. He will not

  1082. be taken by

  1083. force.

  1084. They were

  1085. thinking,

  1086. he's not going

  1087. to be able

  1088. to hide.

  1089. He won't be

  1090. able to resist

  1091. to rest.

  1092. But then

  1093. when he says,

  1094. I am he,

  1095. he totally

  1096. immobilizes

  1097. them.

  1098. They didn't

  1099. anticipate

  1100. this turn

  1101. of events.

  1102. They didn't

  1103. anticipate

  1104. that they

  1105. would be

  1106. repelled

  1107. with just

  1108. a word.

  1109. Now they're

  1110. flat on their

  1111. backs.

  1112. Now they're

  1113. vulnerable.

  1114. Jesus at this

  1115. point could

  1116. have easily

  1117. have escaped,

  1118. but instead

  1119. he remains

  1120. committed to

  1121. the task.

  1122. In this

  1123. display of

  1124. divine authority,

  1125. Jesus continues

  1126. to remain

  1127. stationary,

  1128. committed to

  1129. the plan

  1130. of God.

  1131. He's not a

  1132. victim of

  1133. his circumstances.

  1134. He is in

  1135. complete control.

  1136. But if that

  1137. wasn't enough,

  1138. Jesus continues

  1139. to demonstrate

  1140. his authority

  1141. through the

  1142. situation.

  1143. Even through,

  1144. even though

  1145. his authority,

  1146. he is humbly

  1147. submitting himself

  1148. to the

  1149. Father.

  1150. But now we

  1151. see his

  1152. power as

  1153. he keeps

  1154. his promises.

  1155. Jesus proves

  1156. the dependability

  1157. of his

  1158. promises in

  1159. verses 7 to

  1160. 9.

  1161. Notice what

  1162. it says,

  1163. So he

  1164. asked them

  1165. again,

  1166. Whom do

  1167. you seek?

  1168. And they

  1169. said,

  1170. Jesus of

  1171. Nazareth.

  1172. Jesus answered,

  1173. I told you

  1174. that I am

  1175. he.

  1176. So if

  1177. you seek

  1178. me,

  1179. let these

  1180. men go.

  1181. This was

  1182. to fulfill

  1183. the word

  1184. that he

  1185. had spoken.

  1186. Of those

  1187. whom you

  1188. gave me,

  1189. I have

  1190. lost no

  1191. one.

  1192. We see

  1193. that Jesus

  1194. now takes

  1195. command of

  1196. the situation

  1197. in another

  1198. way.

  1199. He has

  1200. asked this

  1201. question a

  1202. second time.

  1203. He has

  1204. asked them

  1205. to help

  1206. refine their

  1207. focus.

  1208. Who do

  1209. you seek?

  1210. Well,

  1211. Jesus of

  1212. Nazareth.

  1213. So if

  1214. you seek

  1215. Jesus of

  1216. Nazareth,

  1217. then here

  1218. I am,

  1219. leave the

  1220. disciples

  1221. alone.

  1222. I kind

  1223. of get

  1224. this picture

  1225. of the

  1226. Jedi

  1227. waving their

  1228. hand and

  1229. saying,

  1230. leave the

  1231. disciples

  1232. alone.

  1233. That's not

  1234. the picture

  1235. we're supposed

  1236. to get.

  1237. The picture

  1238. we're supposed

  1239. to get is

  1240. of Jesus

  1241. in command,

  1242. the king

  1243. of kings,

  1244. the master

  1245. of the

  1246. universe,

  1247. is making

  1248. a statement,

  1249. a command

  1250. to his

  1251. subjects.

  1252. It's

  1253. authoritative,

  1254. it's

  1255. decisive,

  1256. and it's

  1257. dependable.

  1258. The word

  1259. that Jesus

  1260. had given

  1261. to his

  1262. disciples,

  1263. the word

  1264. that he

  1265. had preached

  1266. in his

  1267. ministry,

  1268. the word

  1269. that he

  1270. had prayed

  1271. to the

  1272. Father,

  1273. is a

  1274. word that

  1275. he intends

  1276. to keep

  1277. in fulfillment

  1278. of the

  1279. scriptures.

  1280. To

  1281. demonstrate

  1282. that his

  1283. word is

  1284. true,

  1285. and

  1286. dependable,

  1287. and

  1288. trustworthy.

  1289. Jesus

  1290. demonstrates

  1291. the

  1292. mastery

  1293. over

  1294. the

  1295. situation.

  1296. Let

  1297. these

  1298. men

  1299. go.

  1300. Jesus

  1301. had

  1302. just

  1303. prayed

  1304. for

  1305. his

  1306. disciples

  1307. in

  1308. John

    John 17:12

  1309. chapter

  1310. 17

  1311. verse

  1312. 12.

  1313. He

  1314. says,

  1315. Jesus

  1316. will

  1317. make good

  1318. on his

  1319. promises.

  1320. They are

  1321. dependable.

  1322. They are

  1323. trustworthy.

  1324. You can

  1325. trust them.

  1326. in

  1327. the

  1328. moment.

  1329. And even

  1330. in this

  1331. moment,

  1332. where Jesus

  1333. seems to

  1334. be at

  1335. the moment

  1336. of

  1337. weakness,

  1338. he

  1339. demonstrates

  1340. his

  1341. supremacy

  1342. of the

  1343. situation,

  1344. and yet

  1345. his

  1346. surrender

  1347. and

  1348. submission

  1349. to the

  1350. Father.

  1351. Challenges

  1352. will come

  1353. in our

  1354. lives.

  1355. Hardships

  1356. will be

  1357. faced.

  1358. But if

  1359. we walk

  1360. the way

  1361. of the

  1362. cross,

  1363. we will

  1364. walk in

  1365. the way

  1366. of

  1367. submission

  1368. to

  1369. Christ.

  1370. And when

  1371. we submit

  1372. to Christ,

  1373. we will

  1374. experience

  1375. the

  1376. strengthening

  1377. of his

  1378. spirit

  1379. in those

  1380. hard times

  1381. as Jesus

  1382. does here.

  1383. And finally,

  1384. Jesus shows

  1385. his supremacy

  1386. and submission

  1387. to the

  1388. Father

  1389. in verses

  1390. 10 and

  1391. 11 by

  1392. confirming

  1393. the

  1394. determination

  1395. of his

  1396. obedience.

  1397. confirming

  1398. the

  1399. determination

  1400. of his

  1401. obedience.

  1402. Then

  1403. Simon

  1404. Peter,

  1405. verse 10,

  1406. having a

  1407. sword,

  1408. drew it

  1409. and struck

  1410. the high

  1411. priest's

  1412. servant

  1413. and cut

  1414. off his

  1415. right ear.

  1416. The

  1417. servant's

  1418. name was

  1419. Malchus.

  1420. So

  1421. Jesus

  1422. said to

  1423. Peter,

  1424. put your

  1425. sword in

  1426. its sheath.

  1427. Shall I

  1428. not drink

  1429. the cup

  1430. the Father

  1431. has given

  1432. to me?

  1433. Peter,

  1434. in an

  1435. impulsive

  1436. fit of

  1437. courage,

  1438. decides that

  1439. he's going

  1440. to hack

  1441. his way

  1442. through

  1443. this

  1444. cohort

  1445. of 600

  1446. trained

  1447. military

  1448. men.

  1449. Peter

  1450. was

  1451. presumptuous.

  1452. Peter

  1453. thought he

  1454. knew what

  1455. God's plan

  1456. was in

  1457. the situation.

  1458. But rather

  1459. than follow

  1460. the lead

  1461. of his

  1462. Messiah,

  1463. rather than

  1464. walk in

  1465. the steps

  1466. of the

  1467. Savior,

  1468. Peter

  1469. decides to

  1470. take matters

  1471. into his

  1472. own hands.

  1473. Well,

  1474. that proves

  1475. to be

  1476. foolishness

  1477. as all

  1478. he's able

  1479. to do

  1480. is cut

  1481. off an

  1482. ear,

  1483. which again

  1484. gives

  1485. Jesus

  1486. the opportunity

  1487. to show

  1488. up in

  1489. divine

  1490. display,

  1491. healing

  1492. this man's

  1493. ear and

  1494. showing again

  1495. that he

  1496. is the

  1497. one who

  1498. is in

  1499. control

  1500. of all

  1501. that's

  1502. taking

  1503. place.

  1504. Peter

  1505. represents

  1506. presumptuous

  1507. action.

  1508. Those who

  1509. say they're

  1510. moving forward

  1511. in faith,

  1512. but are not

  1513. following the

  1514. lead of

  1515. their Savior.

  1516. But Jesus,

  1517. determining to

  1518. do what the

  1519. Father has

  1520. commanded him,

  1521. rebukes Peter

  1522. and we get a

  1523. glimpse of the

  1524. motivation for

  1525. Jesus that

  1526. comes again to

  1527. the surface.

  1528. He says,

  1529. put your sword

  1530. into its

  1531. sheath.

  1532. Shall I not

  1533. drink the

  1534. cup that the

  1535. Father has

  1536. given to me?

  1537. Missing from

  1538. this narrative

  1539. is the

  1540. discussion or

  1541. the

  1542. discourse of

  1543. Jesus in

  1544. committing himself

  1545. to the

  1546. Father in

  1547. terms of

  1548. prayer.

  1549. Three times

  1550. Jesus goes

  1551. to the

  1552. Father in

  1553. prayer and

  1554. says,

  1555. not my

  1556. will but

  1557. yours be

  1558. done.

  1559. And although

  1560. that is

  1561. missing from

  1562. this gospel

  1563. record,

  1564. we see that

  1565. that was the

  1566. heart of

  1567. Jesus in

  1568. this moment.

  1569. shall I not

  1570. drink the

  1571. cup the

  1572. Father has

  1573. given to

  1574. me,

  1575. Peter?

  1576. Shall I

  1577. not do what

  1578. the Father has

  1579. determined for

  1580. me to do

  1581. since the

  1582. beginning of

  1583. time?

  1584. Fighting was

  1585. not for this

  1586. night as

  1587. evident from

  1588. the other

  1589. gospel record

  1590. where Jesus

  1591. says,

  1592. don't you

  1593. know,

  1594. Peter,

  1595. that I

  1596. could call

  1597. a legion

  1598. of angels

  1599. to deliver

  1600. me?

  1601. But

  1602. scripture must

  1603. be fulfilled.

  1604. in this

  1605. way.

  1606. I need to

  1607. follow the

  1608. plan of

  1609. the Father.

  1610. Jesus

  1611. was interested

  1612. in doing

  1613. what the

  1614. Father had

  1615. said.

  1616. He would

  1617. drink the

  1618. cup of

  1619. the Father's

  1620. wrath for

  1621. the sake of

  1622. those who

  1623. would come to

  1624. him in

  1625. faith.

  1626. He would

  1627. drink the

  1628. judgment of

  1629. God for

  1630. sin by

  1631. dying on

  1632. the cross.

  1633. He would

  1634. absorb the

  1635. wrath of

  1636. God for

  1637. you.

  1638. And he

  1639. would offer

  1640. salvation to

  1641. any who

  1642. would come

  1643. to him in

  1644. repentance and

  1645. faith.

  1646. Jesus would

  1647. drink the

  1648. cup, the

  1649. bitter cup of

  1650. the Father.

  1651. He would

  1652. move forward

  1653. following after

  1654. the will of

  1655. the Father to

  1656. do what the

  1657. Father had

  1658. commanded.

  1659. As we've

  1660. moved through

  1661. this passage,

  1662. I hope that

  1663. it's been

  1664. clear that

  1665. we've seen

  1666. the supremacy

  1667. of Jesus

  1668. show up

  1669. through this

  1670. narrative.

  1671. And yet,

  1672. though he was

  1673. supreme in

  1674. all of these

  1675. circumstances,

  1676. he committed

  1677. himself to

  1678. obedience.

  1679. This morning,

  1680. as we think

  1681. about the

  1682. elements,

  1683. it's a picture

  1684. really of what

  1685. Jesus has done

  1686. for us.

  1687. A picture of

  1688. his body and

  1689. a picture of

  1690. his blood.

  1691. The broken

  1692. body of

  1693. Christ,

  1694. broken for

  1695. us, to

  1696. make way for

  1697. salvation.

  1698. The life's

  1699. blood that

  1700. was spilt for

  1701. us.

  1702. A picture of

  1703. this Passover

  1704. time, where

  1705. the blood was

  1706. painted on the

  1707. doorposts, and

  1708. back in Egypt,

  1709. Israel was

  1710. delivered, the

  1711. Jews were

  1712. delivered because

  1713. of this portrait

  1714. which pointed to

  1715. Christ, future

  1716. deliverance through

  1717. salvation.

  1718. Salvation through

  1719. the blood of

  1720. Christ, being

  1721. cleansed because

  1722. of the washing

  1723. of his blood.

  1724. Let's pray as

  1725. we commit our

  1726. time to him.

  1727. Lord, we're

  1728. grateful this

  1729. morning for

  1730. the supreme

  1731. example of

  1732. your son,

  1733. Jesus, who

  1734. in these

  1735. moments commanded

  1736. the situation.

  1737. He was in

  1738. control, and

  1739. yet he

  1740. willingly gave

  1741. himself up to

  1742. death, to

  1743. betrayal, to

  1744. be crucified, and

  1745. then to rise

  1746. again.

  1747. And Lord, because

  1748. of his obedience

  1749. to the Father, we

  1750. can participate in

  1751. salvation and in

  1752. fellowship.

  1753. Lord, this

  1754. morning we

  1755. understand the

  1756. way of the cross

  1757. is the way of

  1758. surrender.

  1759. surrender.

  1760. It's the way of

  1761. submission.

  1762. It's not the

  1763. way of working

  1764. out our situation

  1765. for ourselves, of

  1766. taking matters into

  1767. our own hands, but

  1768. of seeing the power

  1769. of God working

  1770. through our lives as

  1771. we submit to your

  1772. sovereignty.

  1773. We trust that your

1774. way is best, and we

  1775. prove to the world

  1776. that you are good.

1777. Lord, as we come to

  1778. the elements this

  1779. morning, we pray that

  1780. you would unite our

  1781. hearts, call our

  1782. attention to the

  1783. wonder of our great

  1784. God.

  1785. May we submit once

  1786. again to your name

  1787. and follow you this

  1788. week in obedience.

  1789. We pray in Jesus'

  1790. name.

  1791. Amen.

  1792. Amen.

1793. As we move to the

  1794. communion time, I

1795. just want to call your

  1796. attention to Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1797. chapter 2.

  1798. Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1799. We see what the

  1800. obedience of Christ

  1801. did for us in

  1802. Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1803. beginning with verse

  1804. 5.

  1805. It says,

  1806. Have this mind

  1807. among yourselves,

  1808. which is yours in

  1809. Christ Jesus, who,

1810. though he was in the

1811. form of God, did not

  1812. count equality with

1813. God a thing to be

  1814. grasped, but made

  1815. himself nothing,

1816. taking the form of a

  1817. servant, being born in

  1818. the likeness of men,

  1819. and being found in

  1820. human form, he humbled

  1821. himself by becoming

  1822. obedient to the point

  1823. of death, even death

  1824. on a cross.

  1825. We find from Isaiah

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

1826. chapter 53 that it was

  1827. God's will to crush

  1828. him.

1829. It was God's will to

1830. bring his wrath down on

  1831. the Son.

  1832. And Jesus, willingly

  1833. surrendering to that

  1834. will, obediently

  1835. followed God's plan,

  1836. and was obedient to

  1837. the point of death,

  1838. even death on a

  1839. cross.

  1840. This morning, as we

  1841. consider the obedience

  1842. and submission of

  1843. Christ, it stands for

1844. us as an example of

  1845. people who need to

  1846. follow the pattern of

  1847. Jesus' life.

1848. The way of the cross is

  1849. the way of submission.

  1850. And maybe this morning

  1851. you say, but Pastor

  1852. Scheer, you don't know

  1853. my husband, or you

  1854. don't know my wife.

1855. The Bible says for us

  1856. as husbands to love

  1857. your wife as Christ

  1858. loved the church.

  1859. That's what I call

  1860. surrender.

  1861. That's what I call

  1862. sacrifice.

  1863. That's what I call

  1864. love.

  1865. Or maybe you say,

  1866. Pastor Scheer, you

  1867. don't know my boss.

1868. And all we need to do

  1869. is look at Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  1870. chapter 6, and we

  1871. find that servants are

  1872. to obey their

  1873. masters with fear and

  1874. trembling as to the

1875. Lord and not to men.

1876. We find that we're to

1877. work heartily as to the

1878. Lord and not to men.

1879. Or maybe those of you

  1880. who are students would

  1881. say, well, Pastor Scheer,

  1882. you don't know my

  1883. teacher.

  1884. You don't know how

  1885. difficult things are in

  1886. my classroom.

  1887. And to that, Jesus

  1888. would say, respect your

  1889. authorities.

  1890. Follow after them as

  1891. those who are

  1892. representatives and

  1893. stewards of God.

  1894. God's in control of

  1895. those things.

1896. He desires for us to

  1897. submit to the

  1898. governing authorities

  1899. as to Christ.

  1900. Christ.

  1901. Rather than take

  1902. matters into our

  1903. hands, we submit to

  1904. the will of the

  1905. Father as Christ did.

1906. And then we can see

  1907. the power of God

  1908. show up in our

  1909. lives.

  1910. So this morning, as

  1911. we consider the

  1912. elements today, we

  1913. consider the obedience

1914. of Christ and what he

  1915. accomplished for us.

1916. And as we take those

  1917. elements, and I'm

1918. going to ask the men

1919. to come as I pray, as

  1920. we take those elements,

  1921. consider this morning

1922. how God wants us, how

1923. he wants you, to obey

1924. and submit to him in

  1925. the circumstances in

  1926. which you find yourself

  1927. this week.

1928. Let me pray for us

  1929. again.

  1930. Amen.
