  1. I would like you to turn your Bibles this morning to Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Wednesday evening, as we were enjoying the ministry of missionaries that are going to

  4. be serving the Lord in England, I was listening to the preaching of the Word and I fell under

  5. conviction for something that had been said on last Sunday, something that I said on last

  6. Sunday.

  7. And pastors don't get to bury retractions on the ninth page of the newspaper.

  8. When it happens at the pulpit, it should be declared at the pulpit.

  9. It's inappropriate for a pastor to be sympathetic with people who are struggling with depression

  10. in his office and then be sarcastic in public preaching of the Word.

  11. And I ask your forgiveness for that.

  12. Turn in your Bibles to John chapter 17, verse 6 through 19.

    John 17:6–19

  13. Let me read the passage and have you follow along with me as we hear exactly what God has

  14. spoken to us here in this passage.

  15. I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world.

  16. Yours they were, and you've given them to me, and they have kept your word.

  17. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.

  18. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know

  19. in truth that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me.

  20. I am praying for them.

  21. I am not praying for the world, but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

  22. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.

  23. And I no longer, I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you,

  24. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

  25. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me.

  26. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction,

  27. that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.

  28. But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world,

  29. that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

  30. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them,

  31. because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

  32. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.

  33. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

  34. Sanctify them in the truth.

  35. Your word is truth.

  36. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world,

  37. and for their sake I consecrate myself,

  38. that they also may be sanctified in truth.

  39. Join me in prayer.

  40. Father, we unite together as your people

  41. with one common desire,

  42. that the Lord Jesus Christ, who is our God and Savior,

  43. would be lifted up this morning,

  44. and that we seeing Him would grow to be more like Him,

  45. and that we would grow in our affection for Him.

  46. I'm thankful that both the preaching of the Word of God

  47. and the comprehension of the Word of God

  48. are things that we may ask the Holy Spirit's help for this morning.

  49. And I pray that your people would join me in praying

  50. for the work of the Holy Spirit

  51. in both the declaration of the Word

  52. and then in our comprehension and appreciation.

  53. I pray also, Father, for those that are here today

  54. that perhaps have never come to saving faith.

  55. They know perhaps the words of truth.

  56. They've heard the Scriptures,

  57. and yet they've never been drawn to the cross

  58. to repent and confess their sins

  59. and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  60. And just as we pray that believers would be strengthened,

  61. so we pray that sinners would be converted,

  62. that Jesus, the Lord of life,

  63. would be made much of today in this place.

  64. And we ask in Jesus' name, amen.

  65. This lesson here in John chapter 17,

    John 17 chapter mention

  66. beginning in verse 6 and carrying through to 19,

  67. is the second of three parts of Jesus praying

  68. after He had had the Lord's table

  69. and just before He went to the Garden of Gethsemane.

  70. And you remember last week,

  71. one of the things that I commented on

  72. is that it's appropriate for us

  73. to kind of remind ourselves of the sharp differentiation

  74. between this prayer here,

  75. where Jesus is praying for Himself,

  76. for His disciples, and for us.

  77. And then moments later,

  78. when He goes into the garden,

  79. and He pours out His heart,

  80. and He says, listen,

  81. if it is possible,

  82. let this cup pass from Me.

  83. Here we see the Lord praying

  84. with this kind of divine overview

  85. and interest that kind of transcends the moment

  86. that was going to take place

  87. in the very hours to come.

  88. And He is praying about things

  89. that were very, very close to His heart

  90. and His interest,

  91. namely,

  92. His reunion with the Father,

  93. namely,

  94. the disciples that He had loved and cared for,

  95. and namely for us

  96. who have come to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ

  97. because of His ministry

  98. and because of the ministry of the disciples

  99. that He prayed for.

  100. It would be difficult for me,

  101. and many of you have heard me on occasion

  102. say this is my favorite passage.

  103. It's almost become kind of a joke

  104. because seldom is there a Sunday that goes by

  105. that I don't come to the text thinking,

  106. man, this is really good.

  107. And I have to tell you,

  108. Thursday when I hit the print button

  109. and I heard it click out there in the copy,

  110. Connie, are you in here working in the nursery?

  111. Yeah.

  112. Connie, what happened?

  113. I just, wow!

  114. Man, I've got to wait until Sunday.

  115. But it's a good passage.

  116. Just bear with me.

  117. It is really good.

  118. And the thing that makes this passage so precious

  119. is that it informs us of the heart of Jesus.

  120. Now look at me.

  121. You know, at the heart of our religion

  122. and at the heart of our faith

  123. is not just a set of rules.

  124. Now rules aren't all bad.

  125. But listen to me.

  126. At the heart of what we have in the Lord Jesus Christ

  127. is a very real, personal, genuine relationship.

  128. And one of the sure tests

  129. of the authenticity of your relationship

  130. is your affection and interest

  131. in the person you have it with.

  132. Would you agree with that?

  133. Judith, my bride.

  134. There she is.

  135. She was sitting behind Chris.

  136. And Chris is too tall.

  137. Sorry, Chris.

  138. I'm glad.

  139. Did you notice, Chris, that she moved over here?

  140. I saw her and I went back to let her know.

  141. She works in the nursery once a month, you know.

  142. And so I was like, that's always a bad Sunday for me

  143. because I like to see her.

  144. And then she decided she's not one of those people

  145. who likes to sit at the very front, you know.

  146. She likes to kind of be in the back.

  147. And she was sitting behind Chris.

  148. And Chris is just too tall.

  149. And I told her, honey, you have to move so I can see you.

  150. Here's the point.

  151. If you have a relationship,

  152. now, if you have a relationship,

  153. there has to be some affection with that.

  154. Would you think so?

  155. Well, and so when we step into this passage,

  156. we have an opportunity to understand a little bit more

  157. about how Jesus loves us.

  158. And understanding that, listen to me,

  159. understanding that will whet our appetite for him

  160. and cause us to love him more.

  161. So, if you're sitting here this morning

  162. and your heart, very frankly,

  163. is just about stone cold to Jesus,

  164. I'm really not all that interested

  165. in how many Bible verses you have memorized in the past

  166. or whether you were baptized

  167. or whether or not you go to church on a race.

  168. I'm really interested if you love him and you know him.

  169. Because at the heart of what we are engaged in

  170. is relationship with the Lord of glory.

  171. And as we look at this passage,

  172. we are getting an opportunity

  173. of looking into the heart of Jesus

  174. and understanding how he loves us.

  175. Truthfully, today,

  176. we are looking more at how he loved the 11.

  177. But here's the interesting note.

  178. If he did fairly well at loving the 11,

  179. and what do we know about the 11?

  180. Just follow me here, okay?

  181. The 11 were the most famous

  182. and most significant men in the ancient world.

  183. Phenomenal, spectacular,

  184. men of renown and repute

  185. and incredibly brilliant, right?

  186. I mean, how are we doing so far?

  187. They were low-life fishermen,

  188. flunky tax collectors.

  189. I mean, just a bunch of rude guys.

  190. I mean, it's like,

  191. Jesus, are you kidding me?

  192. These are the guys you picked?

  193. Well, here's the deal.

  194. If Jesus can love those kind of guys,

  195. he probably will do a fairly decent job loving me.

  196. You.

  197. You got it?

  198. So when we look at how Jesus loved the disciples

  199. and prayed for them,

  200. our hearts should be encouraged to know

  201. that he cares for us the same way.

  202. So let's look this morning at,

  203. first of all,

  204. who Jesus was praying for in this passage.

  205. This is called the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus.

  206. I want you to know,

  207. just because I have to say this,

  208. we're going to cover John 17 in three sermons.

  209. Next Sunday,

  210. Pastor Shearer is going to be preaching.

  211. Pretty good.

  212. I like that.

  213. To cover John 17 in three sermons

  214. is just about over the top for me.

  215. Marcus Rainford has written a book called

  216. Our Lord Prays for His Own.

  217. It's 476 pages long,

  218. and it's just phenomenal.

  219. But I have to get this done in this sermon.

  220. Okay, who was Jesus praying for?

  221. I have manifested, verse 6,

  222. your name to the people whom you gave me

  223. out of the world.

  224. Here in John 17, verse 6,

    John 17:6

  225. and carrying down through verse 9,

  226. we're going to see Jesus lay out

  227. some of the markers,

  228. the characteristics of the men

  229. that he was praying for.

  230. First thing we see here

  231. is that these are men

  232. that the Father had given him.

  233. Now remember that Jesus

  234. had manifested the Father's name publicly.

  235. He had preached the kingdom

  236. and repentance to all kinds of people.

  237. He had healed individuals.

  238. He had performed miracles.

  239. He had fed the multitude.

  240. He had done all kinds of things,

  241. and people had seen and seen

  242. and heard and heard,

  243. and nevertheless had really not come to faith.

  244. And here we have 11.

  245. And Jesus identifies

  246. that these individuals

  247. are ones who were a select group.

  248. Now look what it says there in verse 6.

  249. It says,

  250. whom you gave me

  251. out of the world.

  252. I want you to understand

  253. that these 11

  254. were individuals

  255. that the Father

  256. had given to Jesus

  257. as disciples,

  258. but they are also individuals

  259. that the Father

  260. had given to Jesus

  261. as converts,

  262. as believers.

  263. Now we know

  264. that Jesus chose 12.

  265. And I don't want you to think

  266. that Jesus,

  267. in choosing Judas,

  268. had made a bad pick.

  269. because it tells us

  270. and we can take the time

  271. at another moment

  272. and kind of look through

  273. the life and work of Judas

  274. and his role

  275. in the plan of redemption.

  276. I just want you to understand

  277. that the 11

  278. that are being referred to here

  279. are the ones

  280. that God had given to Jesus

  281. sovereignly as His own.

  282. It's interesting to mark

  283. how often we see this issue

  284. of God being the one

  285. who gives individuals to Christ.

  286. You find it three times

  287. in John 17.

  288. Put your finger there

  289. on verse 6.

  290. Put your finger then

  291. on verse 37.

  292. I'm sorry.

  293. I'm sorry.

  294. Hold it, hold it.

  295. What am I doing here?

  296. John chapter 6,

    John 6:37

  297. verse 37 and 39.

  298. That's my mistake.

  299. Go there for a second.

  300. John chapter 6,

  301. verse 37.

  302. All that the Father gives me

  303. will come to me

  304. and whosoever comes to me

  305. I will never cast out.

  306. How is it that people

  307. come to Christ?

  308. Oh, just arbitrarily decide

  309. one day.

  310. No, it says here

  311. they come because

  312. the Father gives them.

  313. There, verse 39.

  314. It says this,

  315. And this is the will

  316. of Him who sent me

  317. that I should lose

  318. nothing of all

  319. that He has given me

  320. but raise it up

  321. on the last day.

  322. Look at John chapter 10,

    John 10:29

  323. verse 29.

  324. Those who Jesus

  325. was praying for

  326. were those that

  327. the Father had given Him.

  328. John chapter 10,

    John 10:29

  329. verse 29.

  330. My Father who has

  331. given them to me

  332. is greater than them all

  333. and no one is able

  334. to snatch them

  335. out of my Father's hand.

  336. Now stop just for a moment.

  337. There's a little sidebar.

  338. A little note.

  339. To believe in

  340. eternal security

  341. means that you're

  342. ultimately resting

  343. on the same

  344. theological foundation

  345. that the doctrine

  346. of God's sovereign grace

  347. in choosing rests on.

  348. Does that make sense?

  349. Jesus makes it clear

  350. over and over again

  351. that the Father

  352. is the one who gives

  353. and He doesn't lose them.

  354. And so if you're sitting

  355. here this morning

  356. and you're a believer,

  357. I want to encourage you

  358. to know this.

  359. The reason you've

  360. come to faith

  361. is because of His call

  362. and His enabling

  363. and you are incredibly blessed.

  364. Furthermore,

  365. you are not going

  366. to fall away.

  367. I like that.

  368. Second thing

  369. that I want you to mark

  370. about these individuals

  371. that Jesus was praying for

  372. is that these are those

  373. who have kept

  374. the Father's word.

  375. Look at the last part

  376. of verse 6.

  377. And they have kept

  378. your word.

  379. In addition,

  380. to the fact

  381. of the sovereign will

  382. of God

  383. in choosing those

  384. that He would give

  385. to Jesus,

  386. we see that there

  387. is another marker

  388. given to us

  389. in the text

  390. about the characteristic

  391. of these individuals

  392. who are genuine believers.

  393. What is it?

  394. They obey the word.

  395. They follow the word.

  396. They do the things

  397. that the Father

  398. has called them to do.

  399. And so I want you

  400. to recognize

  401. that there is no accident

  402. that there is

  403. this close correlation

  404. or connection

  405. between divine appointment

  406. and willing obedience.

  407. There is no denying

  408. the fact

  409. that one of the characteristics

  410. of those who are

  411. genuinely called

  412. is that they are wired

  413. and God is at work

  414. in helping them

  415. grow in obedience.

  416. Do you follow that?

  417. Now listen to me.

  418. Just an illustration.

  419. I got to tell you

  420. for me to sit

  421. I was sitting right over there

  422. wrestling with

  423. the bad words

  424. that I'd said

  425. on Wednesday

  426. and kind of thinking

  427. do I really want to stand

  428. in front of God's people

  429. and say

  430. that was wrong?

  431. Now how many of you

  432. think that was

  433. yeah, yeah

  434. I can't think of anything

  435. more exciting.

  436. But here's what.

  437. I who have been saved

  438. by the grace of God

  439. have no other call

  440. but to be obedient

  441. to the word of my Savior

  442. and I had to choose

  443. between whether

  444. I was going to play

  445. to my pride

  446. or I was going

  447. to humble myself

  448. and exalt him

  449. whose word

  450. is my command.

  451. And as we look

  452. at the passage

  453. Jesus makes it

  454. very, very clear

  455. that those

  456. who he was praying for

  457. are those

  458. who kept

  459. the word.

  460. And so if you're

  461. sitting here this morning

  462. and you're one

  463. of those individuals

  464. who you grew up

  465. in a Christian home

  466. you learned the vocabulary

  467. you got it all down

  468. but the fact of the matter

  469. is this

  470. you do not see

  471. a continuing path

  472. of obedience

  473. you do not see

  474. growth in obedience

  475. I would ask you

  476. to double check

  477. your birth certificate.

  478. Where's the proof?

  479. If you're his child

  480. there will be

  481. a growing interest

  482. in obeying him

  483. regardless of the cost.

  484. Third

  485. I want you to mark

  486. that those

  487. who Jesus was praying for

  488. were those

  489. who'd received

  490. the word as gods.

  491. Now they know

  492. verse 7

  493. that everything

  494. that you have given me

  495. is from you

  496. for I have given them

  497. the words

  498. that you gave me

  499. and they have received them

  500. and have come to know

  501. in truth

  502. that I came from you

  503. and they have believed

  504. that you sent me.

  505. When Jesus prayed

  506. for these

  507. eleven disciples

  508. he wasn't praying

  509. for those

  510. who had merely

  511. believed

  512. in the physical

  513. evidence

  514. that they had

  515. enjoyed

  516. when Jesus

  517. fed the five thousand.

  518. I mean do you

  519. follow that?

  520. Here you are

  521. stuffing your face

  522. with bread and fish

  523. and you have to say

  524. well this is pretty

  525. spectacular

  526. I mean hey

  527. we started out

  528. with one little boy

  529. with his lunch

  530. and we're all eating.

  531. I have to admit

  532. I believe.

  533. But did they believe

  534. in Jesus

  535. as the Savior?

  536. Did they believe

  537. in Jesus

  538. as the one

  539. that they were trusting

  540. for their salvation?

  541. No.

  542. In the vast majority

  543. of cases they didn't

  544. and here's Jesus

  545. saying

  546. these who I am

  547. praying for

  548. are those

  549. who have received

  550. the word

  551. that I have given

  552. as God's.

  553. They heard

  554. what Jesus said

  555. and they accepted

  556. that it was

  557. actually God's word.

  558. They didn't just

  559. nod and grin

  560. they obeyed it.

  561. Next thing

  562. that I want you

  563. to mark

  564. is that those

  565. who Jesus

  566. was praying for

  567. are those

  568. who believed

  569. that Jesus

  570. had been sent

  571. by the Father.

  572. Here's Jesus

  573. praying specifically

  574. for his eleven.

  575. Now I'm not going

  576. to get over

  577. into the issue here

  578. but remember

  579. Judas by this time

  580. had left

  581. to betray Jesus

  582. and it tells us

  583. later in the passage

  584. that Judas

  585. was the son

  586. of destruction.

  587. he was the one

  588. who had been

  589. ordained providentially

  590. by God

  591. to do the thing

  592. he did.

  593. Now if you're

  594. sitting here

  595. trying to put

  596. all the pieces

  597. together

  598. let me know

  599. when you get there

  600. because

  601. but it's true.

  602. Mark the fact

  603. scriptures tell us

  604. of the reality

  605. of human responsibility

  606. but also of God's

  607. sovereignty

  608. and the way

  609. he does things

  610. and so we kind of

  611. humble ourselves

  612. and say okay

  613. in this case

  614. what we're looking

  615. at however

  616. is not the issue

  617. of Judas

  618. but the ones

  619. that Jesus

  620. is praying for

  621. and his prayer

  622. was this

  623. that they

  624. who he

  625. was praying

  626. for would

  627. believe

  628. they'd been sent

  629. by the Father.

  630. What's the emphasis

  631. here?

  632. That they would

  633. be locked

  634. into the reality

  635. that Jesus

  636. had been sent

  637. on a divine

  638. mission

  639. by God

  640. to accomplish

  641. a particular

  642. purpose.

  643. You got that?

  644. Now stop

  645. just for a moment.

  646. I want you

  647. to move forward

  648. in the passage

  649. just a little bit

  650. okay

  651. to verse 18.

  652. As you sent

  653. me into the world

  654. so I have sent

  655. them into the world.

  656. what's Jesus

  657. saying?

  658. Back up

  659. just for a moment

  660. because we

  661. want to understand

  662. this.

  663. Here is Jesus

  664. saying I want

  665. these people

  666. to really

  667. understand

  668. and the ones

  669. I'm praying

  670. for get it

  671. that you

  672. sent me

  673. into the world.

  674. Aren't you

  675. glad that Jesus

  676. came?

  677. Are you glad?

  678. For real?

  679. He sent you

  680. for exactly

  681. the same

  682. reason.

  683. I had

  684. an epiphany.

  685. Do you

  686. know what

  687. an epiphany

  688. is?

  689. How many

  690. of you

  691. like cartoons

  692. where the

  693. little bubbles

  694. kind of

  695. represent people

  696. that are

  697. thinking and

  698. not saying

  699. it?

  700. Okay.

  701. An epiphany

  702. is a bubble

  703. moment.

  704. I was driving

  705. down the road

  706. and you're

  707. kind of

  708. thinking to

  709. myself

  710. about 14

  711. months away

  712. from retirement

  713. and what am

  714. I going to

  715. do when I'm

  716. retired?

  717. I thought

  718. I'm going

  719. to do the

  720. same thing

  721. I'm doing

  722. now.

  723. I'm going

  724. to serve

  725. God.

  726. Is there

  727. no change?

  728. Do you

  729. understand

  730. that?

  731. That was

  732. a bubble

  733. moment.

  734. It's like

  735. what?

  736. You mean

  737. I don't

  738. get to do

  739. just one

  740. and one

  741. go fishing

  742. and hunt

  743. all the rest

  744. of my life

  745. and maybe

  746. garden a

  747. little bit?

  748. No.

  749. I'm going

  750. to do

  751. the same

  752. thing I

  753. was doing

  754. before.

  755. I'm going

  756. to serve

  757. Jesus.

  758. Just the

  759. same thing.

  760. Why?

  761. Because

  762. he sent

  763. me.

  764. His sending

  765. doesn't stop

  766. when I turn

  767. 70 if I

  768. get that far.

  769. Do you

  770. follow that?

  771. You got

  772. that?

  773. Here is

  774. Jesus saying

  775. listen I'm

  776. praying for

  777. these guys

  778. and I'm

  779. really glad

  780. that they

  781. believe you

  782. sent me.

  783. By the

  784. way I

  785. am sending

  786. them.

  787. So before

  788. we go on

  789. from this

  790. little who

  791. is Jesus

  792. praying for

  793. let's kind

  794. of put our

  795. heads around

  796. this for a

  797. second and

  798. let's ask a

  799. couple practical

  800. questions.

  801. Just kind

  802. of put it

  803. out there and

  804. have you chew

  805. on it a

  806. little bit.

  807. hey am I

  808. someone who

  809. actually is

  810. following what

  811. Jesus says?

  812. We live in a

  813. messy messy

  814. world.

  815. Do you

  816. realize that?

  817. We really

  818. do.

  819. the greater

  820. concern I

  821. have today

  822. is not

  823. about the

  824. unregenerate

  825. world around

  826. us.

  827. But the

  828. fact that so

  829. many people

  830. who have been

  831. called by Christ

  832. to be salt

  833. and light are

  834. not the least

  835. bit interested

  836. in anything

  837. but their

  838. own private

  839. agenda.

  840. And I

  841. got to tell

  842. you when the

  843. salt stops

  844. being salt

  845. the meat

  846. goes bad

  847. quickly.

  848. And that's

  849. what we're

  850. seeing.

  851. So are you

  852. one who is

  853. obedient to

  854. Christ?

  855. That's a

  856. practical

  857. question.

  858. Another

  859. question is

  860. this is that

  861. hey you and

  862. I are tickled

  863. pink that

  864. Jesus was

  865. sent to be

  866. the savior

  867. of the

  868. world.

  869. Now look

  870. at what it

  871. says there

  872. again.

  873. Just put

  874. your finger

  875. on it.

  876. Verse 18

  877. as you

  878. sent them

  879. into the

  880. world.

  881. The Greek

  882. word there

  883. is kathos

  884. which means

  885. in the

  886. same manner

  887. in the

  888. same manner

  889. that you

  890. sent me

  891. into the

  892. world

  893. I have

  894. sent them

  895. into the

  896. world.

  897. So practical

  898. question is

  899. this is

  900. your life

  901. as wrapped

  902. up in the

  903. glory of the

  904. father and

  905. in the work

  906. of redemption

  907. that he

  908. came to

  909. accomplish

  910. and sent

  911. us out

  912. to be

  913. messengers

  914. of or is

  915. it all about

  916. your personal

  917. comfort and

  918. preferences and

  919. all the little

  920. nuanced details

  921. that reflect

  922. you?

  923. Coming back

  924. just for a

  925. moment.

  926. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 1:1

  927. 1 verse 1

  928. and 2 it

  929. says this it

  930. says that God

  931. at various

  932. sundry times he

  933. spoke through the

  934. prophets etc etc

  935. and then he says

  936. in verse 2

  937. but in this

  938. last day he

  939. has spoken to

  940. us through his

  941. son.

  942. What it's saying

  943. is this is what

  944. Jesus says has

  945. got some weight

  946. right?

  947. It's got some

  948. weight and so

  949. Jesus is saying

  950. to you I'm

  951. sending you out

  952. for the same

  953. purpose the

  954. father sent me.

  955. Well let's come

  956. to another

  957. profoundly encouraging

  958. part because the

  959. first part is a

  960. little heavy.

  961. let's look at

  962. what Jesus

  963. prayed for.

  964. Verse 11

  965. Jesus says I'm

  966. no longer in the

  967. world but they

  968. are in the world

  969. and I'm coming

  970. to you holy

  971. father keep them

  972. in your name

  973. which you have

  974. given me that

  975. they may be one

  976. even as we are

  977. one.

  978. I have to tell

  979. you having asked

  980. earlier for

  981. forgiveness for

  982. sarcasm I want to

  983. be very careful how

  984. I tread with this

  985. but listen to me.

  986. I am flummoxed.

  987. I'm stymied.

  988. I'm confused.

  989. And I don't know

  990. what else to

  991. attribute the

  992. deficiency to other

  993. than a general lack

  994. of Bible knowledge.

  995. Here's what I'm

  996. talking about.

  997. That was a long

  998. wind up but here's

  999. the point.

  1000. I just cannot

  1001. believe I was

  1002. watching TV the

  1003. other night a rare

  1004. occasion that I was

  1005. doing it and I

  1006. happened to watch

  1007. an advertisement

  1008. send in for free

  1009. miracle water.

  1010. Some of you are

  1011. smiling but I

  1012. hope you didn't

  1013. send in.

  1014. Our fountains are

  1015. cheaper than that.

  1016. Send in for free

  1017. miracle water and

  1018. one person after

  1019. another immediately

  1020. after the send in

  1021. for free miracle

  1022. water I sent in

  1023. with my free

  1024. miracle water and

  1025. I got a Lexus

  1026. and God blessed

  1027. me with he healed

  1028. me.

  1029. I'm thinking to

  1030. myself if Jesus

  1031. was really

  1032. interested in

  1033. healing us with

  1034. free miracle water

  1035. in the 21st

  1036. century could he

  1037. could he have

  1038. done it?

  1039. What's the answer?

  1040. Nod your heads.

  1041. Here's Jesus

  1042. praying for us

  1043. praying for his

  1044. disciples.

  1045. What is he really

  1046. interested in?

1047. that we move up a

  1048. tax bracket or two?

  1049. That we have you

  1050. know what is he

  1051. interested in?

  1052. Okay well let's get

  1053. to it.

  1054. Number one that they

  1055. be kept in the

  1056. father's name.

1057. That they be kept in

  1058. the father's name.

1059. That they be kept in

  1060. the father's name.

1061. Now the name of God

  1062. is more than vowels

  1063. and consonants.

  1064. It's more than

  1065. letters.

  1066. His name refers to

  1067. his character and

  1068. his truth.

  1069. In Romans and in

  1070. 2 Peter we find

  1071. that the way in

  1072. which we behave as

  1073. believers ends up

  1074. reflecting on his

  1075. name and when we

  1076. misbehave we cause

  1077. his name to be

  1078. blasphemed.

  1079. It's no accident

  1080. that the first thing

  1081. that Jesus prayed

  1082. for as he was

  1083. praying for his

  1084. disciples was this

  1085. that they would

  1086. remain in the

  1087. center of the

  1088. character and

  1089. nature and glory

  1090. of God.

  1091. In essence when

  1092. Jesus said what he

  1093. did there keep

  1094. them in your name

  1095. he was praying

  1096. that his

  1097. disciples would

  1098. stay zeroed in

  1099. would stay focused

  1100. would remain

  1101. interested in the

  1102. glory and the

  1103. person of God.

  1104. What you think

  1105. about God and how

  1106. often you think

  1107. about God makes

  1108. all the difference

  1109. in the world in

  1110. how you act and

  1111. what you say.

  1112. Isn't that right?

  1113. I am a Baptist

  1114. pastor actually

  1115. seven days a week.

  1116. Now some days I

  1117. wear jeans and

  1118. some days I wear

  1119. shorts and some

  1120. days and sometimes

  1121. one of the things

  1122. that I always find

  1123. curious is that

  1124. you know I'm

  1125. working around the

  1126. yard or I'm

  1127. somewhere at Home

  1128. Depot a lot of

  1129. times and you know

  1130. and someone will

  1131. get to talking to

  1132. me and the next

  1133. thing that happens

  1134. is they say

  1135. something that is

  1136. a little off

  1137. color or a little

  1138. inappropriate.

  1139. I don't say

  1140. hey don't do

  1141. that I'm a

  1142. Baptist pastor.

  1143. I just kind of

1144. go on go on go

  1145. on and a couple

  1146. minutes later I

  1147. say so what do

  1148. you do?

  1149. well I'm a

  1150. pastor.

  1151. Oh I didn't mean

  1152. to say that.

  1153. I'm sorry.

  1154. What I think about

  1155. what you said is

  1156. really irrelevant.

  1157. I'm checking out of

  1158. here soon.

  1159. It's what God

  1160. thinks that counts.

  1161. okay.

  1162. So it's the

  1163. desire of the

  1164. Savior that his

  1165. disciples stay

  1166. within focus and

  1167. interest in the

  1168. glory and the

  1169. supremacy of God.

  1170. Second thing that

  1171. we find here.

  1172. Jesus prays that

  1173. they will be one.

  1174. Look at verse

  1175. 11 that they may

  1176. be one even as

  1177. we are one.

  1178. Hey.

  1179. I have the

  1180. privilege of being

  1181. father to four

  1182. children.

  1183. They are no

  1184. longer at that

  1185. point in life where

1186. we all get in the

  1187. car together and we

1188. say or I would say

  1189. from the driver.

  1190. Well actually I would

  1191. say from the

  1192. passenger seat because

  1193. Judith usually drove

  1194. for good reason.

1195. I no longer say hey

1196. where do you want to

  1197. go?

1198. But I can tell you

1199. when we used to say

1200. that in the car I

  1201. ended up with five

  1202. different opinions.

1203. I want to go to

  1204. McDonald's.

1205. I want to go to

  1206. Arby's.

  1207. Everybody had an

  1208. opinion.

  1209. It's like stop.

  1210. Unity is not

  1211. something that we

  1212. are hardwired to do

  1213. because of our

  1214. depraved little

  1215. souls.

  1216. Would you agree

  1217. with that?

  1218. Huh?

  1219. Getting along?

  1220. Huh?

  1221. No?

  1222. Here's Jesus.

1223. He says let me read

  1224. it again.

  1225. He says that they

1226. may be one even as

  1227. we are one.

  1228. Here is Jesus

  1229. praying.

  1230. What's he praying

  1231. for?

  1232. That his disciples

1233. be one as he is

  1234. one with the

  1235. father.

  1236. Jesus cared very

  1237. much for the

  1238. well-being of his

  1239. disciples.

  1240. Listen to me.

  1241. And in

  1242. relationship to

  1243. that interest he

  1244. prayed that his

  1245. children, his

  1246. disciples would be

  1247. in unity with one

  1248. another.

  1249. Being in unity is

  1250. not in our human

  1251. nature, in our

  1252. depravity.

  1253. It is the work

  1254. of grace and it

  1255. is the work of

  1256. the cross.

  1257. In essence, to

  1258. put it together

  1259. this way, and it's

  1260. not the only thing

  1261. that could be said

  1262. about biblical

  1263. unity, but unity

  1264. is something that

  1265. comes about when we

  1266. are persuaded that

  1267. the glory and the

  1268. name of the

  1269. father is more

  1270. important than our

  1271. personal preferences.

  1272. Let me come to

  1273. one more point here

  1274. just for a second.

  1275. Not one more, so

  1276. you'll think I'm

  1277. done.

  1278. I want you to

  1279. mark also that

  1280. Jesus said, I'm

  1281. praying that they

  1282. will have their

  1283. joy fulfilled.

  1284. I want you to

  1285. recognize that when

  1286. Jesus is praying

  1287. that they have

  1288. their joy

  1289. fulfilled, he is

  1290. interested that his

  1291. disciples have a

  1292. joy, an abiding

  1293. joy that transcends

  1294. the moment.

  1295. What's going to

  1296. happen very soon is

  1297. that they're going

  1298. to watch their

  1299. savior betrayed, and

  1300. they're going to

  1301. abandon him, they're

1302. going to know of the

  1303. crucifixion, and

  1304. they'll be pretty

  1305. disappointed and

  1306. grieved.

1307. And yet here is Jesus

  1308. praying, and his

  1309. prayer is this, that

  1310. they would have their

  1311. joy fulfilled.

1312. They would be full of

  1313. joy.

  1314. Let's think about that

  1315. just for a moment.

  1316. Where does joy come

  1317. from?

  1318. For one, it comes

  1319. from who you know.

1320. And I have to say

  1321. this, that a

  1322. characteristic of a

  1323. believer whose heart

1324. is marked by a sense

1325. of the presence and the

1326. glory of God is not an

  1327. unhappy person.

  1328. There are moments of

  1329. sorrow and their

  1330. heartache and their

1331. days of shadow, but the

  1332. characteristic of a

  1333. believer who is

1334. walking with the Lord is

  1335. marked by joyfulness.

  1336. joyfulness.

  1337. There's another thing

1338. that I want you to

  1339. understand in relationship

1340. to this issue of joy, and

1341. I want you to go back

1342. just for a moment to

  1343. John chapter 15, verse

    John 15:9–11

  1344. 9 through 11.

  1345. John chapter 15, look

    John 15 chapter mention

1346. at the passage, if you

  1347. will.

  1348. John chapter 15, verse

    John 15:9

  1349. 9.

1350. As the Father has loved

1351. me, so have I loved you.

  1352. Abide in my love.

  1353. If you keep my

  1354. commandments, you will

1355. abide in my love, just

1356. as I have kept my

  1357. Father's commandments and

  1358. abide in his love.

  1359. These things I have

1360. spoken to you, that my

1361. joy may be in you, and

1362. that your joy may be

  1363. full.

  1364. Now listen to me.

  1365. Everybody wants to be

  1366. happy.

  1367. Would you agree with

  1368. that?

1369. I mean, just try it.

  1370. You're in the checkout

  1371. line at Walmart.

1372. You come up to the

  1373. lady who's standing

1374. there waiting for you to

  1375. scan your stuff or

  1376. whatever else, and you

  1377. say, hey, would you

1378. like to be happy today?

1379. Or when you drive up to

  1380. McDonald's and you order

1381. your food at the window

1382. and just say to the

  1383. lady, hey, would you

1384. like to be happy today?

  1385. No, I'm really hoping I

  1386. can be pretty unhappy

  1387. today.

  1388. Today's a day for

  1389. unhappiness, and I'm

  1390. really into it.

1391. I want to do my best at

  1392. it.

1393. People want to be happy,

  1394. but here's the deal.

  1395. There is a correlation.

  1396. There's a connection.

  1397. There's a link between

  1398. obedience and happiness.

  1399. Do you follow that?

  1400. There really is.

  1401. There really is.

1402. The other day, I found

1403. myself in the process of

  1404. putting something together,

  1405. and I have changed.

1406. One of the advantages of

1407. growing older is that you

1408. learn things the hard way.

1409. And I was actually sat

1410. down, and the first thing

1411. I did was I took out the

  1412. instruction manual.

  1413. The first thing.

  1414. I used to think that I

  1415. could figure it out.

  1416. It didn't make any

  1417. difference what it was.

  1418. I figured it out.

1419. And I've had so many times

1420. where I would be about

  1421. three-quarters of the way

  1422. through the project and

  1423. suddenly realize that this

  1424. wasn't working.

1425. And so back to the manual.

1426. So now I'm at the point

  1427. where I've made this

  1428. connection between

  1429. following instructions and

1430. getting it right seems to

  1431. be really close.

  1432. It makes me happy.

  1433. Now listen to me.

1434. There are some of you out

1435. here who just, I mean, you

  1436. can't figure out why

1437. happiness just seems to be

1438. elusive, but you are living

  1439. in perpetual, ongoing

1440. disobedience to the Word of

1441. God, and it isn't going to

1442. work until you follow Him.

1443. The fullness of joy and the

  1444. circle of obedience go

  1445. together.

1446. Mark what it says next.

1447. We find Jesus there in His

1448. prayer saying, I'm coming to

1449. you, okay, and I've kept

1450. these ones, but I am asking

1451. that you would guard them,

1452. that you would protect them.

1453. And so I want you to

1454. understand as we think about

1455. this fact that Jesus is not

1456. praying that we'd be taken

1457. out of the world, but that

  1458. we'd be protected.

  1459. I can't help when I read

1460. from day to day of the

  1461. things that believers are

  1462. suffering all around the

1463. world to not think that the

1464. day is coming when people

1465. here in America are going to

  1466. suffer very realistically for

  1467. their faith.

  1468. Do you realize that?

  1469. It's coming.

  1470. It's coming.

  1471. And interestingly enough,

1472. we find that Jesus didn't

1473. pray that we would be kept

  1474. from difficulty.

  1475. difficulty.

1476. His prayer was that we

1477. would be kept through it.

1478. Last thing that I want you

1479. to mark here, going down,

1480. if you will, to verse 17,

1481. it says, sanctify them in the

  1482. truth.

  1483. Your word is truth.

1484. My Bible reading last Thursday

1485. was through a portion of

  1486. Leviticus covering the

1487. the ordination process and the

  1488. sanctifying process of Aaron

  1489. and his sons.

1490. I mean, it was impressive.

1491. Went on for seven days.

1492. And what that did actually was

1493. set Aaron and his sons apart

  1494. for the responsibility of

  1495. serving God.

1496. The word sanctify means to set

1497. apart, put apart for some

1498. specific purpose or be appointed

  1499. for something.

1500. And in the ceremony in the

  1501. Old Testament, the priest

  1502. put on special garments.

  1503. He offered specific sacrifices.

1504. He had blood put on the right

1505. lobe of his ear and on the

1506. right thumb and on the right

  1507. toe, okay?

1508. And it was all put together in

1509. such a fashion that that

1510. individual was set apart for a

  1511. particular responsibility.

1512. That was their job, their call.

1513. And here is Jesus praying for

1514. his disciples and he said,

1515. listen, I want them to be

  1516. sanctified in the truth.

1517. I want them to be set apart.

  1518. Now listen to me.

1519. The thing that makes us

  1520. different

1521. is the word of God.

1522. The thing that makes us

1523. different is the word of God.

1524. It's no accident that the

1525. central part of our worship

  1526. today is the word.

1527. And next week when Pastor

  1528. Shearer preaches, you'll have

1529. someone who doesn't have gray

  1530. hair, who's a little younger and

1531. a little slimmer standing up here.

1532. But you know what's going to be

  1533. exactly the same?

1534. It's going to be the word of God.

  1535. And the thing that

  1536. characterizes, now listen,

1537. because this is something that

1538. seems to be missing sometimes.

  1539. The thing that characterizes

1540. authentic worship is that it's

  1541. never separated from the

1542. centrality of the preaching of

  1543. the word of God.

  1544. Do you follow that?

1545. Our singing is what it is

1546. because of the word of God,

1547. not despite, not apart, but

  1548. because.

1549. And so here is Jesus praying that

  1550. his disciples would be

  1551. sanctified by the word.

  1552. The word.

  1553. The word.

1554. So practically speaking, let me

  1555. ask you this.

  1556. You're sitting out there.

1557. We're coming towards the end.

1558. How important is the word in

  1559. your life?

  1560. How important?

1561. Well, I read three verses in the

  1562. morning.

1563. You know, pretty much that's all I

  1564. can get in.

  1565. Really?

  1566. Okay.

1567. So when you have a question,

1568. where do you go for information?

  1569. Well, I Google it.

  1570. So I got you there, didn't I?

  1571. Okay.

1572. So where's the word in all of

  1573. this?

  1574. Do you follow that?

  1575. Malachi, to the law,

1576. Isaiah chapter 8, to the law and

    Isaiah 8 chapter mention

1577. the testimonies that they speak not

1578. according to this, it's because there

1579. is no truth in them.

1580. Jesus says, listen, I want you to do

1581. something for these 11 that I love.

1582. I want you to sanctify them in the

1583. truth and your word is truth.

  1584. Listen.

1585. Jesus prayed for his 11 and he's

1586. praying for you today in the same way.

1587. If you want something that is an

1588. incredible comfort, yes, it is a

1589. comfort to know that Jesus died on

1590. the cross for my sins.

1591. But it says in Hebrews that he ever

  1592. lives.

1593. Do you know what it says?

  1594. To make intercession.

  1595. Intercession.

  1596. Thank you, Mary Ellen.

1597. To make intercession for us before

  1598. the throne.

1599. I got to tell you, it gives me cold

1600. chills to realize that Jesus is

  1601. praying for me today.

1602. It doesn't get much better than that.

1603. So practically speaking, listen to me.

1604. If you are here and you know Jesus as

1605. your Savior and you're kind of playing

1606. loose and careless with obedience, are

  1607. you listening?

1608. You're messing with the wrong Savior.

1609. Because the one who is interceding on

1610. your behalf is bent on bringing it

  1611. about, right?

1612. Having begun a good work in you, he

1613. will keep on putting the heat on until

  1614. you get the memo.

1615. So don't mess with him.

1616. If you are here this morning and you do

1617. not know Jesus, let me tell you, now is

1618. the appointed hour to cry out to him and

  1619. say, listen, my life's a mess and I

1620. cannot make it and I need Jesus as my

  1621. Savior.

  1622. Now's the hour.

  1623. Let's close in prayer.

1624. Our Father God, this morning as we take

1625. the word in hand, we are thankful for

1626. the blessing of the scriptures that you

1627. have given to us that declares truth and

1628. tells us of the Lord Jesus and his

1629. ministry on our behalf, even today as he

1630. intercedes for us before the Father.

1631. I pray that as we sing this song in

1632. closing, that those who are here that do

1633. not know Christ would be drawn to the

1634. cross, that today they would recognize the

1635. burden and the darkness of their heart has

1636. no remedy apart from crying out to Christ.

1637. And believers that are discouraged,

1638. believers that are uncertain about the

1639. moment and the future would find comfort in

1640. this, that the one who saved them,

1641. even at this moment, intercedes for them

  1642. before the throne.

1643. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1644. Amen.
