  1. Turn your Bibles this morning to John chapter 19, beginning there in verse 38.

    John 19 chapter mention

  2. ! After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus.

  3. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about 75 pounds in weight.

  4. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloth and with spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.

  5. Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been lain.

  6. So because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

  7. Let's pray.

  8. Father God, this morning as we take the Scriptures in hand, we are mindful

  9. that what we have in front of us, that which we read,

  10. that's which we rely upon, is the very words that you have chosen to reveal yourself to us,

  11. to help us understand the glory of your salvation,

  12. to help us gain a better affection and deeper appreciation for our Lord Jesus Christ,

  13. to help us have confidence in the life that you've called us to live as children of the Heavenly Father,

  14. to give us courage and faith that we,

  15. growing from glory to glory,

  16. through the working of your Spirit and the Word,

  17. may become more like Jesus today

  18. and in the days that follow.

  19. And we pray that you would give me your strength to speak

  20. as an oracle of God

  21. and that your people would receive the Word with gladness

  22. and that the Spirit of God would bear fruit

  23. in the lives of those that are here today

  24. that know Christ

  25. and that those that are here today

  26. that do not know the Lord Jesus,

  27. that today, by the power of the Spirit of God,

  28. would be drawn to the cross to understand

  29. there is no hope and no salvation apart

  30. from our Lord Jesus Christ.

  31. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  32. Amen.

  33. Let me start our passage this morning

  34. by reminding you of the reason that I generally begin by reading Scripture.

  35. It's not something that I was coached, per se, to do in seminary,

  36. and it is not something that the deacons have appointed and said,

  37. Pastor, whatever you do when you get started,

  38. please read the passage of Scripture,

  39. and I want to be careful that I communicate

  40. that it's not the necessary and automatic way

  41. that every pastor should always begin a sermon.

  42. But for Tim Knoyer,

  43. I like to remind you from the very beginning

  44. that the thing that has put me here

  45. and has put you here

  46. is the Word of God

  47. that is infallible

  48. and absolutely reliable

  49. and sufficient,

  50. and that the starting point

  51. and the center point of our attention

  52. is what God has chosen to reveal to us.

  53. In relationship to that,

  54. I began reading in John chapter 19,

    John 19 chapter mention

  55. but I want you to turn over

  56. to John chapter 20, verse 31

    John 20:31

  57. to frame another little piece here

  58. as we get into a reasonably complex passage.

  59. John chapter 20, verse 31

    John 20:31

  60. tells us why this is written.

  61. Incidentally, if you don't have a Bible,

  62. there's one in the pew

  63. or there's one in the chair by you,

  64. and we have those there

  65. so that you can follow along.

  66. It helps to actually look at the text.

  67. So grab a Bible

  68. if you don't have one

  69. and at least go through the exercise

  70. of allowing that Word

  71. to interact with your thinking.

  72. John chapter 20, verse 31,

    John 20:31

  73. but these things are written

  74. so that you may believe

  75. that Jesus is the Christ,

  76. the Son of God,

  77. and that by believing

  78. you may have life in His name.

  79. I remember reading at one point

  80. and I'm not positive

  81. of the one who said it.

  82. I think it was Zane Gray.

  83. Someone asked him

  84. at one of his, you know,

  85. author conferences type of things.

  86. They said,

  87. so why does it take the hero

  88. five shots to kill any man?

  89. And Zane Gray,

  90. the author that he was,

  91. who wrote just a number of Westerns

  92. and pretty well redundant

  93. in every one of them,

  94. he said,

  95. well, because I get paid

  96. five cents a word.

  97. Do the math.

  98. One bullet's five cents.

  99. Five bullets is always better.

  100. And I bring that to your attention

  101. because when you look

  102. at the Word of God,

  103. you are not looking at a document

  104. and you're not looking at words

  105. that were just put down

  106. either for entertainment

  107. or for some kind of economic value.

  108. They are given to us

  109. that you and I

  110. might be transformed

  111. by the power of the Word of God.

  112. I think about 2 Corinthians 3, verse 18,

    2 Corinthians 3:18

  113. where it says,

  114. we are changed from glory into glory.

  115. And namely, that happens

  116. as we see the Lord Jesus Christ

  117. in the Scriptures

  118. and growing to understand Him

  119. and His love for us

  120. and His wisdom,

  121. we are slowly being transformed

  122. to be like Him.

  123. And so, this morning

  124. as you take John chapter 19 in hand,

    John 19 chapter mention

  125. we are looking at a passage

  126. that if you were just skimming along

  127. and speed reading,

  128. you probably would step over

  129. and not think very much about.

  130. To amplify that characteristic,

  131. I want you to recognize

  132. that if you were to take

  133. all of John chapter 19

    John 19 chapter mention

  134. and think carefully about

  135. how much of John 19

  136. actually has to do

  137. with the physical suffering of Christ

  138. in His crucifixion,

  139. you would be stunned

  140. to recognize

  141. John 19 has very little to say

  142. about His suffering.

  143. Far more attention

  144. is given actually

  145. to the related materials

  146. surrounding Christ's crucifixion

  147. and the effect

  148. that what was taking place

  149. had on those

  150. who were watching it

  151. and were witnesses to it.

  152. And so, this morning

  153. as you look at this passage,

  154. we are actually looking

  155. at the very concluding moments

  156. of that evening on Friday

  157. when Christ actually died.

  158. You remember up in verse 30

  159. when Jesus had received

  160. the sour wine,

  161. He said,

  162. it is finished

  163. and He bowed His head

  164. and gave up His spirit.

  165. Now, what we are dealing with here

  166. in verse 38 through 42

  167. is further information

  168. that the Holy Spirit

  169. has chosen to give to us

  170. and to inform us

  171. about the nature of our Savior

  172. and the phenomenal work

  173. of His grace in saving us.

  174. So, I want you,

  175. as you look at this passage,

  176. to recognize, first of all,

  177. that what we find here

  178. is Christ's power to change men.

  179. Christ's power to change men.

  180. As we take up the text,

  181. we can't miss some of the detail

  182. that John provides.

  183. We're given the names

  184. of two men

  185. who willingly risked

  186. their reputations

  187. and their standing

  188. in the Jewish community

  189. to show an exceptional care

  190. for the body

  191. of our Lord Jesus.

  192. Generally, the bodies

  193. of individuals

  194. who were crucified

  195. were treated

  196. several different ways

  197. in Roman law

  198. or Roman discipline.

  199. Individuals that were crucified

  200. for some relatively

  201. common crime

  202. could be expected

  203. to be taken off the cross

  204. after they'd suffered

  205. and died

  206. however long it took

  207. and they would be thrown

  208. in a common grave,

  209. you know,

  210. kind of a hole in the ground

  211. and that's where

  212. irrelevant pieces of trash

  213. in the bodies

  214. of criminals went.

  215. Individuals that were

  216. actually executed

  217. for sedition

  218. or rebellion

  219. against the Roman government

  220. were treated

  221. a completely different way.

  222. They were dragged out

  223. unceremoniously

  224. into a field

  225. and left there

  226. to be consumed

  227. by vultures

  228. and jackals.

  229. And if you were

  230. to think with me

  231. just for a moment

  232. back through the Old Testament,

  233. you'll remember

  234. one of the despicable

  235. treatments of a body,

  236. God wants us to treat

  237. the dead

  238. with a certain amount

  239. of decorum

  240. and one of the despicable

  241. treatments of those

  242. who died exceptionally

  243. bad deaths,

  244. disobedient, etc.

  245. Remember it says this,

  246. the son who is disobedient

  247. and rebellious

  248. against his father,

  249. what will happen?

  250. The vulture will pick out,

  251. the eagle will pick out

  252. his eye,

  253. an indication

  254. he's going to die

  255. a pretty tough death.

  256. And so those who died

  257. as criminals

  258. treated one way,

  259. those who died

  260. as rebels

  261. were treated another way.

  262. And so you find here,

  263. here are two Jewish individuals

  264. who come to Pilate

  265. and they ask for a favor.

  266. Remember earlier

  267. when the Sanhedrin,

  268. the high priest,

  269. came to ask

  270. that Jesus be crucified,

  271. they wouldn't come in.

  272. Why would they not come in?

  273. They didn't want

  274. to violate themselves

  275. and not be able

  276. to have the Passover.

  277. And so here are

  278. Nicodemus and Joseph

  279. actually coming

  280. into Pilate's presence

  281. and they're asking

  282. for the privilege

  283. of burying Jesus

  284. and caring for his body

  285. properly.

  286. I would imagine

  287. that if you had asked

  288. the Sanhedrin,

  289. the high priests,

  290. if they were approving

  291. in any way

  292. of this level of respect

  293. that was being shown

  294. to the man

  295. they so vilely hated,

  296. they would have objected

  297. very strongly.

  298. Remember,

  299. they wanted him crucified

  300. as a rebel

  301. and they also really

  302. were upset

  303. when Pilate put

  304. what sign over

  305. the head of Jesus?

  306. King of the Jews.

  307. They said,

  308. don't do that.

  309. Just say he thought

  310. he was the king

  311. of the Jews.

  312. They hated him

  313. and the idea

  314. of Jesus being shown

  315. any respect whatever

  316. must have been

  317. highly offensive to them.

  318. So, imagine

  319. and understand

  320. that against the backdrop

  321. of the hatred

  322. of the Jews,

  323. two men

  324. of exceptional rank

  325. came to bury Jesus.

  326. Joseph of Arimathea

  327. came directly

  328. to Pilate

  329. into his presence

  330. and asked for permission

  331. to remove

  332. Jesus' body.

  333. We know also

  334. from the text

  335. here in John

  336. that Nicodemus

  337. was involved as well.

  338. So, let's stop

  339. and think just a little bit

  340. more about these two men,

  341. Joseph and Nicodemus.

  342. For one,

  343. we know from the

  344. Synoptic Gospels

  345. and will not turn there

  346. this morning,

  347. but we do know

  348. from the Synoptics

  349. that both of these members,

  350. these men,

  351. were members

  352. of the Sanhedrin.

  353. They were the actual,

  354. kind of like the court

  355. of Israel

  356. and involved

  357. in making significant

  358. religious

  359. and practical

  360. political decisions

  361. that were outside

  362. the venue

  363. of the government

  364. of Rome.

  365. We also know

  366. previously

  367. that Joseph

  368. and Nicodemus

  369. had been unwilling

  370. earlier

  371. to stand up

  372. and let their faith

  373. and relationship

  374. with Christ be known.

  375. The text here

  376. in John chapter 19,

    John 19 chapter mention

  377. and look at it

  378. just for a moment,

  379. it says this,

  380. Joseph of Arimathea

  381. was a disciple of Jesus

  382. but secretly

  383. for fear of the Jews.

  384. He had believed

  385. to a degree,

  386. but he had not been willing

  387. to make his faith

  388. known publicly

  389. and take a stand

  390. for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  391. Remember what Jesus said?

  392. You who will not

  393. take a stand for me publicly,

  394. I will not take a stand

  395. for you.

  396. And here were individuals

  397. who had been drawn to Christ,

  398. were interested in Christ,

  399. oh man,

  400. he's pretty spectacular,

  401. but they'd not been willing

  402. to make a public stand

  403. at this point.

  404. Now we also know

  405. about Nicodemus

  406. and we find there

  407. in the passage,

  408. Nicodemus in verse 39,

  409. who earlier had come

  410. to Jesus by night.

  411. Here was a man,

  412. interested,

  413. knew he was a prophet,

  414. knew that Jesus

  415. was somebody special,

  416. but again,

  417. he really didn't get,

  418. did not understand

  419. who Christ was

  420. or what he had come for.

  421. And so now here we have,

  422. at the end,

  423. after the cross,

  424. after Jesus' death,

  425. anyway,

  426. we have Joseph

  427. and Nicodemus

  428. both coming boldly

  429. and publicly

  430. to Pilate

  431. and asking for the privilege

  432. of giving honor

  433. to the body

  434. of the Lord Jesus.

  435. What had happened?

  436. I think it's important

  437. for us to ask that question.

  438. What brought the change?

  439. Now I do want you

  440. to recognize,

  441. and it's fair to say,

  442. that we have no

  443. clear indication,

  444. ah,

  445. that Nicodemus

  446. and Joseph specifically

  447. in the construct

  448. of the cross

  449. had come to faith,

  450. but it would seem

  451. that at one time

  452. they had been afraid,

  453. we do know that,

  454. they'd been afraid

  455. to take a stand for Christ,

  456. now they were ready

  457. to do it.

  458. They were no longer

  459. intimidated

  460. by the thought

  461. of being thrown

  462. out of the synagogue.

  463. They were no longer

  464. afraid of what

  465. other people thought

  466. about their readiness

  467. to be identified

  468. with the Lord Jesus.

  469. You remember,

  470. when Jesus healed

  471. the blind man,

  472. they brought the parents

  473. in and said,

  474. so what happened?

  475. And they were afraid

  476. to bear any kind

  477. of testimony

  478. because they knew

  479. that the Jews

  480. had said,

  481. if you will confess Christ,

  482. you'll take a stand

  483. for Him,

  484. we're going to kick you

  485. out of the synagogue.

  486. We'll disfellowship you.

  487. And so how

  488. do these two men

  489. come to this point

  490. of making this

  491. significant change?

  492. Well,

  493. it is evident

  494. as you look

  495. at the text

  496. that the death

  497. of Christ

  498. had had some

  499. kind of effect

  500. on these two

  501. high-ranking individuals.

  502. And I would propose

  503. that it was only

  504. faith in Christ

  505. that could have

  506. drawn them out

  507. of the shadows

  508. where they had been

  509. kind of hiding

  510. and interested

  511. and curious

  512. and respectful.

  513. Now they were ready

  514. to step out

  515. and boldly make a stand

  516. and indicate their faith

  517. and confidence

  518. in the Lord Jesus.

  519. They had come

  520. to the place

  521. where they were

  522. willing to risk

  523. all they had

  524. for Christ.

  525. I want you

  526. to recognize this

  527. as you think about this.

  528. Faith actually

  529. brings change

  530. to a person's life.

  531. Do you understand that?

  532. Faith brings

  533. genuine change

  534. to a person's life.

  535. And one of the things

  536. that is important

  537. for me to draw

  538. to your attention,

  539. particularly in a fellowship

  540. like this,

  541. where there are some

  542. of you that have grown up

  543. learning the vocabulary,

  544. hearing the Bible stories,

  545. knowing all about

  546. the facts of Jesus,

  547. but you've never

  548. really come to the place

  549. where the grace of God

  550. and the power

  551. of the cross

  552. has drawn you

  553. from darkness

  554. into light

  555. and your life

  556. has been radically

  557. and forever changed

  558. by the power

  559. of salvation.

  560. Paul said this

  561. in Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  562. I am not ashamed

  563. of the gospel.

  564. Why?

  565. Because it is the power

  566. of God unto salvation.

  567. And I think we need

  568. to recognize

  569. that those who trust

  570. in Christ,

  571. those who trust

  572. in Jesus,

  573. begin to think differently

  574. and act differently.

  575. It's a fact.

  576. You look back earlier

  577. and Jesus made the statement

  578. in John chapter 12,

    John 12:32

  579. verse 32,

  580. He said,

  581. and I,

  582. if I be lifted up

  583. from the earth,

  584. I will draw all men

  585. to myself.

  586. And the result

  587. of being drawn to Christ

  588. is that your life

  589. ends up being different

  590. than it was before.

  591. I want you to think

  592. with me just for a moment

  593. to another passage

  594. in relationship to this.

  595. And I can't help

  596. but kind of tag along

  597. with what John

  598. was referring to earlier.

  599. Turn in your Bibles

  600. to 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:17

  601. chapter 5,

  602. verse 17.

  603. Let's look at this passage.

  604. Turn in your Bible

  605. to John chapter 5,

    John 5:17

  606. verse 17.

  607. Put your finger

  608. on it.

  609. Therefore,

  610. if anyone

  611. is in Christ,

  612. he is a

  613. new creation.

  614. The old

  615. has passed away,

  616. behold,

  617. the new has come.

  618. If any man

  619. be in Christ,

  620. he is a

  621. different

  622. person.

  623. You're different.

  624. You have

  625. different affections.

  626. You have

  627. different abilities.

  628. You have

  629. different interests.

  630. There is

  631. a significant

  632. change

  633. in the life

  634. of those

  635. that have been

  636. genuinely converted.

  637. And as you look

  638. at the life

  639. of Joseph

  640. and Nicodemus,

  641. you see two

  642. illustrations

  643. of individuals

  644. who in the

  645. proximity of the

  646. cross

  647. had their lives

  648. changed

  649. by Christ.

  650. Let me remind you

  651. of one other

  652. before we move on.

  653. You remember

  654. the thief on the cross?

  655. There he hung

  656. with Jesus,

  657. actually one thief

  658. on one side

  659. and another

  660. on the other.

  661. And at the outset,

  662. both of those thieves

  663. speaking ill of Christ

  664. and later,

  665. one of them

  666. comes to faith.

  667. He rebukes

  668. the companion

  669. on the other side

  670. of Jesus

  671. and says,

  672. listen,

  673. we're suffering

  674. justly for what

  675. we've done.

  676. And this man

  677. between us,

  678. he is not suffering

  679. as a criminal.

  680. He's not suffering

  681. for anything he's done.

  682. And he says,

  683. remember me

  684. when you come

  685. into your kingdom.

  686. And what does Jesus

  687. say to him?

  688. This day,

  689. those are sweet words,

  690. aren't they?

  691. This day,

  692. you will be with me

  693. in paradise.

  694. I tell you,

  695. that was an encouraging

  696. word for the man

  697. that he was suffering

  698. there.

  699. You are going

  700. to be with me.

  701. So,

  702. I ask you a practical

  703. question as you think

  704. about the issue

  705. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  706. in this moment

  707. of his death.

  708. Do you see

  709. the changes

  710. of salvation

  711. in your life

  712. as well?

  713. That's a practical

  714. question.

  715. You sit here

  716. this morning

  717. thinking about

  718. Jesus dying,

  719. dead,

  720. on the cross

  721. and in the

  722. immediate proximity

  723. of what had taken

  724. place in that

  725. moment in history,

  726. we find the thief,

  727. we find Nicodemus,

  728. we find Joseph

  729. whose lives

  730. had been touched

  731. by the power

  732. of the cross

  733. and their lives

  734. were not the same.

  735. And I want to touch

  736. on that

  737. and have you think

  738. seriously about it.

  739. those who know

  740. Christ are not

  741. the same

  742. as they once

  743. were.

  744. Let's look at

  745. something else

  746. as we look at

  747. the passage.

  748. It says there

  749. in verse 40,

  750. so they took

  751. the body of Jesus

  752. and bound it

  753. in linen cloths

  754. with the spices

  755. as is the burial

  756. custom of the Jews.

  757. Now in the place

  758. where he was

  759. crucified,

  760. there was a garden

  761. and in the garden

  762. a new tomb

  763. in which no one

  764. had yet been

  765. laid.

  766. laid.

  767. So let's ask

  768. the question,

  769. what is the significance

  770. of this historical

  771. detail in the

  772. immediate

  773. surrounding

  774. information that

  775. we have

  776. regarding Christ's

  777. death?

  778. Why is it there?

  779. And let me

  780. encourage you,

  781. in your Bible study,

  782. probably one of the

  783. most important

  784. questions you can ask

  785. with the enabling

  786. of the Holy Spirit

  787. over and over

  788. and over again

  789. is why did God

  790. choose to put it

  791. there?

  792. And if you're not

  793. asking those kind

  794. of questions,

  795. the fact of the

  796. matter is,

  797. you're probably

  798. just kind of skimming

  799. across the top

  800. of things and not

  801. getting much of the

  802. substance of what

  803. God has there for

  804. you.

  805. Why is it there?

  806. Well, I want you

  807. to take a minute,

  808. keep your finger

  809. there in John

    John 19 chapter mention

  810. chapter 19,

  811. but turn back

  812. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 41 chapter mention

  813. chapter 41.

  814. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 41 chapter mention

  815. 41.

  816. I love this

  817. passage.

  818. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 41 chapter mention

  819. 41.

  820. Beginning there

  821. in verse 21,

  822. here is one of

  823. the things that

  824. Isaiah loves to

  825. do, or loved to

  826. do, he's not

  827. doing it today,

  828. but he loved to

  829. do was kind of

  830. have smack down

  831. with people who

  832. believed in idols,

  833. you know?

  834. I mean, do you

  835. understand how dumb

  836. idol worship is?

  837. I mean, we're all

  838. illuminated.

  839. There are none of

  840. you that walk into

  841. your house and bow

  842. down to a copy of

  843. Buddha and say,

  844. oh, Buddha, you

  845. know, we're way

  846. beyond that.

  847. We're not into

  848. idols, right?

  849. Okay?

  850. Anyway, here we go.

  851. Yeah.

  852. Anyway, verse 21.

  853. Set your case, set

  854. forth your case, says

  855. the Lord.

  856. Bring your proof,

  857. says the king of

  858. Jacob.

  859. Let them bring them

  860. and tell us what

  861. is to happen.

  862. Here's God saying

  863. to idolaters, why

  864. don't you have your

  865. God show up and

  866. tell me something

  867. that's going to

  868. happen in the

  869. future?

  870. Tell us the

  871. former things, what

  872. they are, that we

  873. may consider them,

  874. that we may know

  875. their outcome or

  876. declare to us the

  877. things that are to

  878. come.

  879. Tell us what is to

  880. come hereafter, that

  881. we may know that you

  882. are gods.

  883. What's he saying?

  884. Isaiah is

  885. challenging idolaters,

  886. why don't you have

  887. your idol go ahead and

  888. tell us what's going to

  889. happen tomorrow?

  890. How many of you really

  891. know what the weather is

  892. going to be?

  893. Just a second, check,

  894. check, check.

  895. How many of you

  896. actually looked at your

  897. cell phone to kind of

  898. get a prognostication of

  899. what the weather was

  900. probably going to be?

  901. How many of you

  902. looked?

  903. Look, look, raise your

  904. hands.

  905. I mean, you know, we

  906. all checked it out.

  907. How many of you have

  908. learned that weather

  909. prognosticators are

  910. people that get to lie

  911. 50% of the time?

  912. I mean, I don't care

  913. what it says is going

  914. to happen.

  915. I remember a couple

  916. weeks ago, Greg and I

  917. were planning on a

  918. work day.

  919. Remember that?

  920. Where are you, Greg?

  921. You're out there

  922. somewhere.

  923. And we had it all

  924. planned and we were

  925. going to be working on

  926. the ditch out there

  927. and there was this, I

  928. mean, ugly looking

  929. cloud that was moving

  930. towards Columbus and

  931. it was just coming

  932. right along and we

  933. called it off at the

  934. last minute and within

  935. minutes of us calling

  936. it off, guess what

  937. happened?

  938. I was out in the

  939. parking lot actually

  940. working on something

  941. and we got about

  942. little three or four

  943. spritzes enough to get

  944. my glasses wet and it

  945. stopped.

  946. Can you predict

  947. tomorrow?

  948. No.

  949. But God can.

  950. And what we find in

  951. this passage going back

  952. to John chapter 19 is

    John 19 chapter mention

  953. that we find that God

  954. has the power to make a

  955. prophetic utterance and

  956. to fulfill it.

  957. God intends for you to

  958. pay attention to the fact

  959. that he can make prophetic

  960. statements and that he can

  961. fulfill them.

  962. First one is in the book

  963. of Isaiah chapter 53 verse

    Isaiah 53:9

  964. 9 and I'm just going to

  965. refer to it in broad terms

  966. but in Isaiah chapter 53

    Isaiah 53:9

  967. verse 9 we find Isaiah

  968. the prophet about 700

  969. years before Christ's

  970. coming and his

  971. crucifixion predicting two

  972. things in relationship to

  973. the death and burial of

  974. Christ.

  975. One is that he would die

  976. with criminals.

  977. Did that happen?

  978. Did that happen?

  979. Yes.

  980. He would die with

  981. criminals.

  982. Number two that while he

  983. would die with criminals

  984. it also tells us where he

  985. would be buried.

  986. And so understand this

  987. the scriptures predicted

  988. who Jesus would die with

  989. and where he would be

  990. buried.

  991. Only a sovereign God

  992. can predict with that

  993. kind of accuracy with any

  994. kind of accuracy at all.

  995. And so we have to

  996. recognize that that as

  997. you read the text the fact

  998. that it is here is given

  999. to you to remind you of

1000. the God that is our

1001. God and Savior and the

1002. one that we have to do

  1003. with.

1004. Now the fact of dying

  1005. among criminals probably

  1006. the probability of that

  1007. happened is probably

1008. higher than the idea of

  1009. Jesus being crucified

  1010. with print criminals and

  1011. yet being buried with

  1012. rich men.

  1013. That really kind of

  1014. stretched the thing.

1015. And I want to remind you

  1016. of what had actually

  1017. happened number one that

  1018. in Christ's death his

  1019. disciples had done what?

  1020. Where did they go?

  1021. They all disappeared.

  1022. They ran away.

  1023. And furthermore none of

  1024. Jesus' disciples could be

  1025. categorized as being

  1026. exceptionally rich.

  1027. We know that.

  1028. Fishermen and whatever

1029. else they were but being

  1030. rich was probably not

  1031. high on their list.

1032. And yet we see here the

1033. hand of God working in

1034. such a way that we find

  1035. an exceptionally rich man

  1036. coming by faith and

1037. asking for the body of

  1038. Christ so that Jesus

1039. could be buried in the

1040. tomb of a rich man.

1041. I want you to look at

  1042. another passage.

  1043. Matthew chapter 12

    Matthew 12:20

  1044. verse 20.

  1045. Matthew chapter 12

    Matthew 12:20

  1046. verse 20.

1047. The first passage that we

1048. recognize is here is Jesus

  1049. crucified with wicked men

1050. buried with a rich man.

1051. But look at Matthew chapter

    Matthew 12:20

  1052. 12 verse 20.

1053. What had happened is here is

1054. Jesus in conflict with the

  1055. scribes and Pharisees etc.

1056. And they ask for a sign.

1057. And what does he say?

  1058. Verse 40.

1059. For just as Jonah was

1060. three days and three nights

1061. in the belly of a great

1062. fish so will the son of

1063. man be three days and

1064. three nights in the heart

  1065. of the earth.

1066. Now what if Jesus treated

1067. as a common criminal had

1068. been thrown in just a

  1069. shallow depression in the

  1070. ground?

1071. What if he had been

1072. dragged out as rebels were

  1073. normally treated and just

1074. left with his body lying

1075. out openly in the public to

1076. be eaten by jackals and

  1077. and vultures?

  1078. No.

1079. In Matthew chapter 20 or

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  1080. 12 when Jesus is asked a

1081. question about a sign he

1082. goes on record and he says

1083. let me tell you something

1084. the the son of man is going

1085. to be three days in the

  1086. ground and raise again.

1087. And so here we have Jesus.

  1088. He died on Friday.

1089. And he had to be buried by

1090. sundown in order for the day

  1091. to count.

1092. And so here we have remember

1093. isn't that strange how the

  1094. Jewish leaders were really

1095. concerned that the body of

1096. these the bodies of these

1097. criminals were not left on

1098. the cross and so they check

  1099. and Jesus is dead.

1100. The others are are have their

1101. legs beaten and crushed and

  1102. they die.

1103. And so Jesus has Nicodemus and

1104. Joseph ask for his body and

1105. he is in the tomb by Friday

  1106. night.

1107. He is in the tomb Saturday and

  1108. what happens on Sunday?

1109. We have the resurrection don't

  1110. we?

1111. So I want you to recognize here

1112. is Jesus back there in in

  1113. Matthew prophesying that he

1114. would be dead for three days

1115. and he would rise again.

1116. Now I want to remind you again

1117. that neither you nor I can

  1118. predict anything.

  1119. I mean we try.

1120. Well we think this is going to

1121. happen or we think that's going

1122. to happen but the truth of

1123. matter is it's probably wise

1124. whenever we say we're going

1125. to do thus and so to remember

1126. what it says in James.

  1127. If the Lord wills.

1128. But here we have the Lord

1129. Jesus and we have Isaiah the

1130. prophet under the prompting of

1131. the Holy Spirit saying literally

1132. hundreds of years before Christ

1133. that certain things were going

  1134. to happen.

1135. And the fact that fulfilled

1136. prophecy should take make us

1137. take his promises for the future

  1138. seriously.

1139. Let me make that point and have

1140. it settle in your mind.

1141. The fact that God shows his

1142. power both to make a prophecy

1143. and bring it about should prompt

1144. us to take his statements

  1145. seriously.

1146. Why do I say that?

1147. Why do I say that?

1148. Because here is what the

  1149. scripture says.

1150. Whosoever believes in the Lord

  1151. Jesus shall have what?

  1152. Everlasting life.

1153. That is essential to understand.

1154. And what does it say?

1155. Those who refuse him, what is the

1156. outcome and what is the

  1157. consequences?

1158. Those who reject the offer of God

1159. of salvation through the finished

1160. work of the Lord Jesus Christ will be

1161. judged forever and suffer for all of

  1162. eternity.

1163. And so here you sit this morning as

1164. believers, some of you, and you are

1165. saying, wow, I am so thankful that the

1166. God I know, the one who's drawn me to

1167. the cross, is the one who makes

  1168. promises and keeps them.

1169. And there's so many things that we can

1170. thank him for in advance because we

1171. know how the story ends.

1172. I happen to love what it says.

1173. Different places in Philippians, but

1174. one of the things it says, he who has

1175. begun a good work in you will, he's

1176. going to pull it off.

1177. How many of you looked in the mirror

1178. this morning and thought, well, I wish

  1179. you'd do it a little sooner?

1180. Fact of the matter is, if he began a

1181. good work, he's going to finish it and

1182. trust him to get it done.

1183. There are others of you that are

1184. sitting here this morning that do not

1185. know Christ, and I want to appeal to

1186. you on the basis of the fact that the

1187. God we serve is the one who makes

  1188. promises and keeps them.

1189. It says this, it's appointed unto man

1190. once to die, and after that, what?

  1191. What?

1192. Come to grips with the darkness of

1193. your soul and understand you can't

1194. save yourself, not by works of

1195. righteousness, lest we all think we

  1196. can pull it off.

  1197. We can't.

1198. It comes, faith comes by hearing the

1199. reality of the gospel, and faith

1200. brings us to believe in the Lord Jesus

1201. Christ in whom alone is salvation.

1202. Let me close in prayer, and John come

1203. to lead us in singing.

1204. Our Father God, this morning, as we

1205. consider the reality of the power you

1206. have both to predict and then to

1207. fulfill, and we realize the power of the

1208. Lord Jesus Christ to take broken and

1209. ruined sinners and change them by grace

1210. to be saved and delivered from the

  1211. burden of sin.

1212. We revel this morning, we who know the

1213. Lord Jesus, we rejoice in the power of

1214. the cross, and we're thankful that you've

  1215. saved us.

1216. And Father, this morning, those that are

1217. here that do not know the Lord Jesus

1218. Christ, my prayer is this, is that this

1219. morning your spirit would draw them to

1220. see that the bankruptcy of their soul has

1221. no remedy, no hope, apart from crying

1222. out to the Lord Jesus Christ and asking

1223. him to be their God and Savior.

1224. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1225. Amen.

1226. Let's stand together as we close, and if

1227. you're here today and the spirit of

  1228. And this.
