  1. Well, thank you, Tim and the worship team.

  2. It's always great to be led into the presence of the Lord through singing,

  3. ! Through the ministry of the word that comes through our singing together

  4. ! And reminding ourselves what the word says, who Jesus Christ is, what he's accomplished for us,

  5. and what it means for us as a result of those truths.

  6. Those truths aren't truths in and of themselves.

  7. They're meant to have a connection to your life.

  8. They're meant to lead to change in your heart.

  9. And this morning, we will come to John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  10. So turn with me to John chapter 20, if you will.

    John 20 chapter mention

  11. If you're a guest with us this morning in the Pew Bible, in front of you, it's on page 906.

  12. We're moving now into the resurrection narrative.

  13. And any of you who are paying attention through the songs that we were singing

  14. would realize that the songs had very much to do about our resurrected Savior

  15. and what the resurrected Savior does for us.

  16. What the reality of Christ and the new life that he had, the resurrected life of Christ,

  17. what it does for you.

  18. And through the next several weeks, as we look at the resurrection narrative,

  19. I want to be able to make a connection for each of us as we look into the word

  20. to know that the resurrection isn't just a truth that stands on its own

  21. without having some sort of effect in your life.

  22. I want you to recognize this morning, as we maybe show the first slide here,

  23. that the resurrection life, the empty tomb,

  24. will result in rising faith for those people who are truly followers of him.

  25. Now, this morning, we may or may not be able to see all those slides,

  26. but you do have in your bulletins and inserts,

  27. so you can follow along one of two ways.

  28. You can either follow along here as a result of the bulletin insert,

  29. and hopefully we'll be able to follow along on the board too,

  30. but that may or may not actually take place.

  31. So, yesterday as I was looking at the passage,

  32. my daughter was sitting next to me and she says,

  33. Daddy, it's not Easter yet.

  34. What are we doing looking at the resurrection?

  35. I want you to know the reality of the resurrection,

  36. whether it's in Easter or it's on this day,

  37. should connect with our hearts,

  38. should lead us to resurrection life,

  39. and should lead us to rising faith,

  40. as we'll see in our passage before us.

  41. Several years ago,

  42. as I had just graduated from college

  43. and moved to Southern California,

  44. I was working full-time at a company there,

  45. but also thought I would make some income on the side.

  46. So, seeing some friends who were growing up in my hometown of Cedarville,

  47. thousands of miles away,

  48. and they were beginning the process of building this business,

  49. if you remember, it was about the time when all the utilities,

  50. the monopolies were beginning to be deregulated and broken apart,

  51. and so communication was one of those things that the phone company,

  52. AT&T in particular,

  53. they were being broken up,

  54. and now other people could be part of the game of selling communication.

  55. Well, this being at the very beginning of the process,

  56. many people in building a business,

  57. in selling their communication service,

  58. and this kind of pyramid scheme of getting customers,

  59. and benefiting from their calls,

  60. and making revenue on the people that they signed up,

  61. it was really attractive,

  62. at least at first,

  63. and for people who were go-getters,

  64. it was a great investment of time.

  65. But as more companies came into play,

  66. and as cell phone service began to rise,

  67. and now long distance was no longer an issue,

  68. the people who had invested so much time

  69. in building this communication business

  70. were left with something that no one really needed or wanted anymore.

  71. So all of that investment left them feeling a bit depleted,

  72. a little discouraged,

  73. that anyone who had set their hopes on this being a future moneymaker,

  74. this was going to be their retirement down the road,

  75. now we're left with the reality,

  76. the fact that what they were putting their hope in

  77. was really not going to play out the way they had anticipated.

  78. They were left, probably many of them,

  79. with some feelings of hurt,

  80. a little betrayal perhaps,

  81. a little discouraged about all of the hard work

  82. that they had put into this company

  83. wasn't going to pay the dividends that they had hoped for.

  84. Now, maybe you have had a similar experience,

  85. where you've put your hope and confidence in a product,

  86. or in a person,

  87. and through the course of life,

  88. the promises that you were given about that product,

  89. or the hope that you had in that individual

  90. as being able to deliver for you.

  91. Over time, there was this reality check,

  92. this gut check,

  93. that they really weren't going to,

  94. they weren't going to follow through the way you had anticipated.

  95. And maybe there was a sense in your own heart of betrayal,

  96. a sense of discouragement.

  97. How could I have been so foolish

  98. to put so much hope in this product,

  99. or so much hope in this individual?

  100. What was I thinking?

  101. How could I have been so silly?

  102. I explain this to you because I wonder if maybe that's where the disciples were at this point in the journey.

  103. As far as Jesus was concerned,

  104. and as far as their discipleship was concerned,

  105. they were all in.

  106. They had made a significant investment in this ministry.

  107. They had left family,

  108. and friends,

  109. and income,

  110. and property,

  111. and inheritance,

  112. so that they could follow after this one,

  113. Jesus Christ,

  114. who made the claim that He was the Messiah,

  115. that He was the one to follow.

  116. Imagine, for a moment,

  117. the shock that they experienced,

  118. the feelings of betrayal,

  119. when after this amazing week of Jesus' ministry in Jerusalem,

  120. it ends in tragedy.

  121. It ends abruptly.

  122. It ends in public humiliation for the person that they were following.

  123. So much so that every pilgrim in all of Israel

  124. had come to Jerusalem for this important festival.

  125. The Passover.

  126. This was the high point of the Jewish calendar.

  127. When all the pilgrims had come,

  128. and so Jesus,

  129. in ministering to people in Galilee,

  130. and people in Judea,

  131. and people in Perea,

  132. on the other side of the Jordan,

  133. and people in Jerusalem,

  134. they came,

  135. and they knew Jesus.

  136. He had taught them personally in their hometown.

  137. But here He was,

  138. hanging on a cross.

  139. Huh.

  140. It's a good thing I didn't follow that guy.

  141. Look at where His life ended.

  142. Look at the tragedy of His life.

  143. And the feelings, perhaps,

  144. of shame and embarrassment,

  145. and being a bit perplexed.

  146. How could they have put all of their hope

  147. in this one, Jesus?

  148. Jesus.

  149. But here they are,

  150. and we find them in John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  151. They show up here at the tomb.

  152. And although in their future,

  153. as they look down the road,

  154. there is no place that is safe for them,

  155. not only in terms of potential persecution

  156. because of following after Jesus,

  157. but also the humiliation of everyone

  158. and all the surrounding regions

  159. knowing just who they were,

  160. through feelings of personal loss

  161. and the nagging feeling

  162. that the last three years had been wasted,

  163. they're still here.

  164. They're still here at the tomb.

  165. We find them

  166. experiencing the benefits of the resurrection

  167. as we look at this passage this morning.

  168. The empty tomb would make all things new for them.

  169. It would make all things new.

  170. And this morning as we look at this,

  171. I want you to understand

  172. that the resurrection leads to rising faith.

  173. It leads to rising faith.

  174. First, I want you to see

  175. that faith is a personal journey.

  176. Faith is a personal journey.

  177. We find that here in verse 1 and 2.

  178. Let me read this for us.

  179. It says,

  180. Now, on the first day of the week,

  181. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early,

  182. while it was still dark,

  183. and saw that the stone had been taken away

  184. from the tomb.

  185. Period.

  186. Now, for any of you who have grown up in church,

  187. and for any of you who are familiar

  188. with the resurrection accounts,

  189. recognize the spotty detail

  190. that John gives to us in this moment.

  191. One verse to essentially summarize

  192. the entire events that are taking place

  193. for Mary at the tomb.

  194. Keep your finger

  195. here in John chapter 20,

    John 20 chapter mention

  196. and turn with me, if you would,

  197. over to Luke 24.

  198. I want to fill this out for you a little bit

  199. so you can see for yourself

  200. what is taking place,

  201. and so we can ask ourselves the question,

  202. what in the world does John have in mind?

  203. What is the point

  204. of this passage for us?

  205. In Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  206. beginning at verse 1.

  207. And we could look at Matthew,

  208. we could look at Mark,

  209. I have those passages noted for you

  210. in your handout,

  211. but this morning we only have time

  212. to look at one of these

  213. three other accounts.

  214. It says,

  215. But on the first day of the week,

  216. at early dawn,

  217. they went to the tomb,

  218. taking the spices they had prepared.

  219. Now, who is the they?

  220. Jump down just for a second

  221. to verse 10,

  222. and you'll see who the they was.

  223. Now, it was Mary Magdalene,

  224. and Joanna,

  225. and Mary the mother of James,

  226. and the other women with them

  227. who told these things to the apostles.

  228. So how many women are we talking about?

  229. At least four,

  230. and probably many others.

  231. That's who shows up to the tomb.

  232. Verse 2.

  233. And they found the stone

  234. rolled away from the tomb.

  235. But when they went in,

  236. they did not find the body

  237. of the Lord Jesus.

  238. While they were perplexed about this,

  239. behold,

  240. two men stood by them

  241. in dazzling apparel.

  242. And as they were frightened

  243. and bowed their faces to the ground,

  244. the men said to them,

  245. Why do you seek the living among the dead?

  246. He is not here,

  247. but he is risen.

  248. Remember how he told you

  249. while he was still in Galilee

  250. that the Son of Man

  251. must be delivered

  252. into the hands of sinful men

  253. and be crucified

  254. and on the third day rise?

  255. And they remembered his words

  256. in returning from the tomb.

  257. They told all these things

  258. to the eleven

  259. and to all the rest.

  260. That's verse 1 of John,

    John 20:1

  261. chapter 20,

  262. verse 1.

  263. So, you might ask yourself

  264. the question,

  265. Where are all of the other women?

  266. What about the earthquake

  267. that we find in Matthew?

  268. What about the soldiers

  269. that they seem to have stepped

  270. around in order to get to the tomb?

  271. What about the angels

  272. that show up in radiant splendor?

  273. And what about the message

  274. that the angels deliver

  275. to these women?

  276. And what about the faith

  277. that we seem to find

  278. in this group of women

  279. in returning to tell the apostles

  280. about the news?

  281. Why is John

  282. seem to be so fascinated with Mary?

  283. Why her story?

  284. Why is it just Mary

  285. that we find here

  286. in John's account?

  287. Was John uninformed

  288. about what had happened?

  289. Is John confused

  290. in some way?

  291. Or does John have

  292. a special objective,

  293. a focus that he desires

  294. to communicate?

  295. Well, there's some truths

  296. we need to remember

  297. when we look at passages

  298. like this.

  299. We need to understand,

  300. first of all,

  301. that Scripture is true,

  302. not just in concept,

  303. but in content.

  304. not just in the ideas

  305. that it shares,

  306. but in the actual words

  307. that it uses.

  308. Scripture is true.

  309. And because it's true

  310. that the details

  311. of the word

  312. can be harmonized.

  313. They work together.

  314. They don't contradict

  315. each other.

  316. So the accounts

  317. that we find

  318. in Matthew

  319. and Mark

  320. and Luke

  321. fill out

  322. for us

  323. a deeper,

  324. fuller view

  325. of the events

  326. that take place

  327. here at the tomb.

  328. But John has a reason.

  329. What is John's purpose

  330. for focusing

  331. on Mary?

  332. I believe we can find

  333. the purpose

  334. as we think about

  335. his purpose statement

  336. we find here

  337. in this chapter.

  338. We're finally getting

  339. to the end.

  340. We're finally getting

  341. to this purpose statement

  342. that John shares with us

  343. in John 20, 31.

  344. These are written

  345. so that you may believe

  346. that Jesus is the Christ,

  347. the Son of God.

  348. John wants us,

  349. the readers,

  350. to come to faith.

  351. And he wants you

  352. to realize

  353. that coming to faith

  354. is a personal journey.

  355. No one can believe

  356. for you.

  357. It is something

  358. you must believe

  359. for yourself.

  360. And all throughout

  361. the Gospel of John,

  362. John brings this point

  363. to bear in our hearts.

  364. We read several accounts

  365. through all of the Gospel

  366. that focus on individuals.

  367. John is interested

  368. in the unique stories

  369. of individual people.

  370. We find specific stories

  371. only in the Gospel of John

  372. that concentrate

  373. on individuals.

  374. In chapter 1,

  375. the story of Andrew.

  376. In chapter 1,

  377. the story of Philip

  378. and Nathaniel.

  379. In chapter 3,

  380. the story of Nicodemus.

  381. In chapter 4,

  382. the story of the Samaritan woman.

  383. Towards the end

  384. of chapter 4,

  385. the story of the nobleman's son.

  386. And then the lame man

  387. by the pool of Bethesda.

  388. Remember,

  389. Jesus walks by

  390. all of these sick people,

  391. picks out one,

  392. and ministers to the one.

  393. The woman caught in adultery

  394. in chapter 8.

  395. The man born blind

  396. in chapter 9.

  397. The raising of Lazarus

  398. in chapter 11.

  399. And then this concentration

  400. of ministry we find

  401. from chapters 13

  402. to chapter 17

  403. where Jesus focuses in

  404. on his disciples.

  405. Ministry specifically to them.

  406. And here,

  407. his focus on Mary Magdalene.

  408. John is interested

  409. in reinforcing the message.

  410. Faith is a personal journey.

  411. It can be reinforced

  412. by a faith community.

  413. But it must be embraced

  414. by you personally.

  415. So how does Mary respond?

  416. Where is Mary

  417. in this narrative?

  418. What is her conclusion?

  419. What does she walk away with?

  420. What is Mary's initial conclusion?

  421. That is point number two.

  422. Let's look at it here

  423. in verse 2

  424. and see.

  425. It says,

  426. So she ran

  427. and went to Simon Peter

  428. and the other disciple

  429. and the one whom Jesus loved.

  430. And she said to them,

  431. They have taken

  432. the Lord

  433. out of the tomb

  434. and we do not know

  435. where they have laid him.

  436. That's

  437. her conclusion.

  438. There are so many

  439. positive things

  440. about Mary Magdalene.

  441. We'll look at her story

  442. a little bit more

  443. in depth next week.

  444. So please come back

  445. so we can see

  446. the rest of the story

  447. from Mary Magdalene.

  448. It is an exciting story.

  449. Here we find

  450. she comes up.

  451. She shows up

  452. immediately after

  453. the Passover.

  454. The morning after

  455. the Passover.

  456. She is there when?

  457. Look at the text.

  458. When does she show up

  459. in verse 1?

  460. The sun hadn't even

  461. come up yet.

  462. She is ready

  463. to go

  464. to minister

  465. to her Lord.

  466. She has a plan

  467. we find from

  468. the other

  469. gospel records.

  470. She comes prepared

  471. with her friends

  472. to tend

  473. to the body

  474. to anoint it

  475. with spices.

  476. You may ask

  477. yourself the question

  478. what is the point

  479. of Mary

  480. anointing Jesus'

  481. body

  482. when it had already

  483. been done

  484. as we saw last week

  485. by Nicodemus

  486. and Joseph

  487. of Arimathea?

  488. Well

  489. if you remember

  490. the urgency

  491. of the moment

  492. that the Roman

  493. soldiers had to

  494. break the legs

  495. of those criminals

  496. hanging on the cross

  497. because the Sabbath

  498. was coming

  499. quickly

  500. you realize

  501. that there was

  502. a condensed

  503. window of time

  504. in which

  505. to get the body

  506. down

  507. to get permission

  508. from Pilate

  509. to run the body

  510. to the tomb

  511. to put it in

  512. the right place

  513. to anoint

  514. and prepare it

  515. the right way

  516. wrapping it

  517. the way it was

  518. supposed to be wrapped

  519. get all of that done

  520. get back home

  521. before Sabbath begins.

  522. And Mary

  523. Magdalene

  524. the other Mary

  525. and several other

  526. women with her

  527. only ones

  528. to observe this

  529. from a distance

  530. recognize

  531. that the preparation

  532. of the body

  533. had not

  534. quite been

  535. to their

  536. satisfaction.

  537. So they make

  538. a personal

  539. investment

  540. they go out

  541. and buy

  542. the right

  543. spices

  544. so they can

  545. come ready

  546. to do it

  547. the right way

  548. to prepare

  549. the body

  550. the way

  551. devotion

  552. demanded.

  553. These were

  554. women who had

  555. been devoted

  556. to Jesus

  557. not only here

  558. in the final

  559. moments

  560. but they had

  561. been devoted

  562. to Jesus

  563. throughout

  564. his entire

  565. ministry.

  566. We find

  567. again from

  568. the other

  569. gospel records

  570. these are

  571. women who

  572. followed him

  573. from Galilee.

  574. That's significant.

  575. Have you missed

  576. that in the past?

  577. Do you realize

  578. that Mary

  579. came with an

  580. entourage

  581. of individuals

  582. along with the

  583. rest of the

  584. pilgrims

  585. and disciples

  586. with Jesus

  587. to Jerusalem?

  588. Jerusalem?

  589. They were

  590. there

  591. ministering

  592. to him

  593. in Jerusalem

  594. but they

  595. had ministered

  596. to him

  597. throughout

  598. his earthly

  599. ministry.

  600. We find

  601. from Luke

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  602. chapter 8

  603. that Mary

  604. had made

  605. a personal

  606. investment

  607. she was

  608. essentially

  609. a financer

  610. of

  611. Jesus'

  612. ministry

  613. not only

  614. vested

  615. in the process

  616. of being a

  617. part of his

  618. ministry

  619. but vested

  620. in

  621. contributing

  622. to the

  623. ministry

  624. so that

  625. it could

  626. continue.

  627. They were

  628. among the

  629. only loyal

  630. disciples

  631. at the

  632. cross.

  633. They were

  634. the only

  635. ones to

  636. show up

  637. at the

  638. tomb

  639. when the

  640. body was

  641. being

  642. prepared.

  643. And now

  644. here they

  645. are the

  646. first to

  647. show up

  648. now the

  649. tomb

  650. is empty.

  651. But what

  652. screams

  653. through this

  654. text and

  655. what you

  656. walk away

  657. from in

  658. reading

  659. verse 2

  660. says what

  661. about her

  662. faith at

  663. this point?

  664. Go ahead

  665. read it

  666. for yourself.

  667. What does

  668. verse 2

  669. say about

  670. Mary's

  671. faith

  672. in light

  673. of her

  674. incredible

  675. devotion?

  676. Her

  677. faith was

  678. still

  679. inadequate.

  680. They have

  681. taken the

  682. Lord out

  683. of the

  684. tomb.

  685. We don't

  686. know where

  687. they have

  688. laid him.

  689. For all

  690. of Mary's

  691. devotion it

  692. could not

  693. lead her

  694. to faith.

  695. For all

  696. of Mary's

  697. previous

  698. faith it

  699. could not

  700. endure the

  701. test of

  702. time when

  703. hardship hit

  704. at this

  705. point.

  706. She had

  707. been a

  708. woman of

  709. faith but

  710. now faith

  711. was fleeting

  712. for her.

  713. But she

  714. becomes a

  715. catalyst for

  716. Peter in

  717. John.

  718. And again

  719. we'll follow

  720. her narrative

  721. next week

  722. where Jesus

  723. reinforces

  724. faith in

  725. her and

  726. leads her

  727. to true

  728. genuine

  729. enduring

  730. faith.

  731. Come back

  732. next week

  733. for that.

  734. The rest

  735. of the

  736. story.

  737. But John

  738. wants to

  739. draw our

  740. attention this

  741. morning to

  742. this personal

  743. journey of

  744. faith.

  745. Wherever you

  746. are this

  747. morning you

  748. are a person

  749. of faith.

  750. Whether you

  751. believe in

  752. Jesus or

  753. you choose

  754. not to

  755. believe.

  756. You're

  757. believing in

  758. this world.

  759. You're

  760. believing in

  761. the satisfactions

  762. of this

  763. life.

  764. Where do

  765. you stand

  766. on the

  767. spectrum of

  768. faith today?

  769. You can't

  770. put your

  771. confidence in

  772. a faith that

  773. happened sometime

  774. in the past.

  775. It must be a

  776. faith that

  777. endures, that

  778. lives, that

  779. continues.

  780. I'm reminded

  781. of Ephesians

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  782. chapter 3 where

  783. the apostle Paul

  784. is praying for

  785. the church of

  786. Ephesus.

  787. He prays that

  788. Christ may dwell

  789. in their hearts

  790. through faith.

  791. Is faith

  792. flourishing in

  793. your life?

  794. Faith in

  795. Christ and

  796. what he's

  797. accomplished?

  798. Does it

  799. spill out in

  800. affection for

  801. him, in

  802. trusting him

  803. for what he

  804. says?

  805. Guiding your

  806. decisions by

  807. the things that

  808. God has said

  809. are right and

  810. true?

  811. guiding your

  812. affections by

  813. your own

  814. personal cravings

  815. and desires?

  816. Do you realize

  817. this morning that

  818. devotion, however

  819. strong in your

  820. life, can never

  821. lead you to

  822. true faith?

  823. No matter how

  824. disciplined you

  825. might be,

  826. no matter how

  827. dedicated you

  828. think you are,

  829. your devotion to

  830. God is inadequate

  831. to lead you to

  832. faith.

  833. Coming to

  834. church, reading

  835. your Bible,

  836. loving your

  837. spouse, being a

  838. good student,

  839. giving your money

  840. to the poor,

  841. being a good

  842. neighbor, loving

  843. the people around

  844. you, having a

  845. happy spirit,

  846. being generally

  847. positive in your

  848. dealings with

  849. individuals, being a

  850. model citizen,

  851. showing up to all

  852. the events, even

  853. being a part of

  854. ministry, your

  855. devotion cannot

  856. lead you to

  857. genuine faith.

  858. And Mary is

  859. coming face to

  860. face with that

  861. reality.

  862. Faith is a

  863. personal journey.

  864. Are you living by

  865. faith today?

  866. But faith is

  867. also reinforced by

  868. evidence.

  869. Praise the

  870. Lord that faith

  871. can be reinforced

  872. by evidence.

  873. And that's our

  874. next point this

  875. morning.

  876. We find that in

  877. verses 3 to

  878. 7.

  879. Let me read

  880. that for us.

  881. It says this,

  882. So Peter went

  883. out with the

  884. other disciple,

  885. and they were

  886. going towards

  887. the tomb.

  888. Both of them

  889. were running

  890. together, but

  891. the other

  892. disciple outran

  893. Peter and

  894. reached the

  895. tomb first.

  896. And stooping to

  897. look in, he saw

  898. that the linen

  899. clothes lying

  900. there, but he

  901. did not go in.

  902. Then Simon Peter

  903. came, following

  904. him, and went

  905. into the tomb.

  906. He saw the linen

  907. clothes lying

  908. there, and the

  909. face cloth, which

  910. had been on

  911. Jesus' head, not

  912. lying with the

  913. linen cloths, but

  914. folded up in a

  915. place by itself.

  916. Then the other

  917. disciple, who had

  918. reached the tomb

  919. first, also went

  920. in, and he saw

  921. and believed.

  922. I want you to

  923. understand this

  924. morning that Jesus

  925. gives us confirming

  926. witnesses.

  927. He is not afraid of

  928. evidence to

  929. reinforce his

  930. truth claims.

  931. witness.

  932. The first witness

  933. that we see is

  934. the witness of

  935. the empty tomb.

  936. That was a

  937. confirming work of

  938. Christ to state

  939. categorically, the

  940. promises that I

  941. have made in the

  942. past are promises

  943. that you can count

  944. on.

  945. They have been

  946. fulfilled.

  947. Something that

  948. strikes my

  949. attention is that

  950. Jesus could have

  951. risen and left

  952. the tomb shut.

  953. He could have

  954. passed through that

  955. rock just as he

  956. passed through the

  957. door of the

  958. upper room.

  959. But Jesus gives

  960. an open invitation

  961. to anyone who

  962. would come and

  963. observe.

  964. Look in the

  965. tomb.

  966. It is empty.

  967. I have risen from

  968. the dead.

  969. The evidence is

  970. there.

  971. Come see for

  972. yourself.

  973. He's happy to

  974. put the evidence

  975. on display.

  976. He's happy to

  977. give witness to

  978. the truth that

  979. he has proclaimed.

  980. He's not afraid

  981. to give us that

  982. confirming witness,

  983. the witness of

  984. the empty tomb.

  985. Jesus had stated

  986. on at least three

  987. occasions to his

  988. disciples and to

  989. the public, I

  990. will go to trial

  991. by the Jews.

  992. I will be handed

  993. over to the

  994. Gentiles.

  995. I will be

  996. crucified.

  997. And on the

  998. third day I will

  999. rise.

  1000. And if that

  1001. had not happened,

  1002. you would say

  1003. that Jesus'

  1004. truth claims

  1005. were a sham.

  1006. But he gives

  1007. clear and

  1008. sufficient evidence,

  1009. even in this

  1010. moment, to the

  1011. truth that he

  1012. had proclaimed.

  1013. The stone is

  1014. removed.

  1015. John, who is

  1016. that other

  1017. disciple that he

  1018. refers to,

  1019. apparently is

  1020. quicker than

  1021. Peter, makes it

  1022. to the tomb.

  1023. He's looking

  1024. inside.

  1025. And he sees

  1026. the linen

  1027. clothes that

  1028. are lying

  1029. there.

  1030. Peter, who

  1031. eventually catches

  1032. up, does what

  1033. we would expect

  1034. Peter to do.

  1035. He runs right in

  1036. without giving a

  1037. second thought.

  1038. He sees the

  1039. scene.

  1040. He checks out

  1041. the linen

  1042. clothes lying on

  1043. that stone table.

  1044. He sees the

  1045. face cloth that

  1046. is not where it

  1047. should be, where

  1048. the head would

  1049. normally be

  1050. placed.

1051. He sees it in a

  1052. different spot,

  1053. folded.

  1054. Jesus is

  1055. gone.

  1056. The clothes are

  1057. not strewn out

  1058. over the floor.

  1059. They're not

  1060. torn or cut.

  1061. The body had

  1062. not been

  1063. manhandled in

  1064. any way.

  1065. It should have

  1066. been obvious

  1067. what had

  1068. happened.

  1069. They, of all

  1070. people, should

  1071. have known,

  1072. I know what

  1073. this means.

  1074. Jesus is

  1075. risen.

  1076. But they're

  1077. not there.

  1078. They're not

  1079. there.

  1080. It does give

  1081. some indication

  1082. that there is

  1083. rising faith in

  1084. the heart of

  1085. John.

  1086. There seems to

  1087. be a glimmer of

  1088. hope for him.

  1089. It does indicate

  1090. that he saw

  1091. and believed.

  1092. We'll look at

  1093. that in a

  1094. moment.

  1095. But not only

  1096. is there the

  1097. evidence or

  1098. the witness of

  1099. the empty

  1100. tomb, there

  1101. is also the

  1102. witness of

  1103. confirming works.

  1104. The witness of

  1105. confirming works.

  1106. These disciples

  1107. are not

  1108. rookies when

  1109. it comes to

  1110. time with

  1111. Jesus.

  1112. They had

  1113. spent three

  1114. and a half

  1115. years in

  1116. ministry seeing

  1117. the power of

  1118. God flowing

  1119. through the

  1120. person of

  1121. Christ.

  1122. They saw

  1123. his power over

  1124. the wind,

  1125. wind, in the

  1126. waves.

  1127. They had

  1128. experienced it

  1129. for themselves.

  1130. There they

  1131. were on the

  1132. Sea of Galilee

  1133. rowing for all

  1134. they were worth

  1135. for hours in

  1136. the dark,

  1137. wondering if

  1138. they would

  1139. survive the

  1140. journey.

  1141. And here

  1142. comes this

  1143. figure across

  1144. the lake,

  1145. this shadowy

  1146. figure that

  1147. looked like a

  1148. specter.

  1149. And they know

  1150. it is Jesus.

  1151. Jesus.

  1152. And Jesus

  1153. with a word

  1154. in a moment

  1155. brings peace

  1156. and calm to

  1157. the wind and

  1158. waves.

  1159. They see his

  1160. power.

  1161. The power to

  1162. trump any of

  1163. their human

  1164. energy.

  1165. Power over

  1166. wind and

  1167. waves.

  1168. Power over

  1169. the elements.

  1170. They saw his

  1171. power over the

  1172. demons.

  1173. How many times

  1174. had Jesus

  1175. encountered men

  1176. and women

  1177. who had been

  1178. in bondage

  1179. to the

  1180. supernatural

  1181. for the

  1182. duration of

  1183. their life.

  1184. Communities

  1185. who had

  1186. tried to

  1187. remove this

  1188. menace from

  1189. among them

  1190. had shackled

  1191. them in

  1192. chains,

  1193. had driven

  1194. them out of

  1195. their community

  1196. and yet the

  1197. menace still

  1198. existed for

  1199. all of the

  1200. energy that

  1201. they had to

  1202. try to

  1203. confine and

  1204. constrain

  1205. this individual.

  1206. And Jesus

  1207. shows up and

  1208. with a word

  1209. commands the

  1210. demons to

  1211. flee.

  1212. In a moment

  1213. he exercises

  1214. his superior

  1215. authority over

  1216. the supernatural.

  1217. They had seen

  1218. the witness

  1219. of his power

  1220. over illness.

  1221. People who

  1222. had been

  1223. gripped by

  1224. illness for

  1225. their entire

  1226. lives.

  1227. I think of

  1228. the woman who

  1229. had been

  1230. hunched over

  1231. for 15 years

  1232. had tried to

  1233. access all

  1234. of the

  1235. resources that

  1236. were at her

  1237. disposal,

  1238. all of the

  1239. physicians,

  1240. all of the

  1241. help she

  1242. could get.

  1243. Actually she

  1244. had an issue

  1245. of blood.

  1246. So remembering

  1247. the story.

  1248. And Jesus

  1249. comes and

  1250. she touches

  1251. the hem of

  1252. his garment

  1253. and in a

  1254. moment she's

  1255. healed.

  1256. Others who

  1257. were blind

  1258. or lame

  1259. or deaf

  1260. for their

  1261. entire lives.

  1262. And Jesus

  1263. in a moment

  1264. with a word

  1265. demonstrates

  1266. his authority

  1267. over their

  1268. illness.

  1269. And of course

  1270. his power

  1271. over death.

  1272. Jairus'

  1273. daughter,

  1274. the widow's

  1275. son,

  1276. and recently

  1277. in their

  1278. recent history

  1279. the resurrection

  1280. of Lazarus.

  1281. Who when

  1282. Jesus raises

  1283. him says

  1284. to his

  1285. disciples,

  1286. I am glad

  1287. we were not

  1288. there so

  1289. that I

  1290. could lead

  1291. you to

  1292. believe.

  1293. It would

  1294. be the

  1295. moment that

  1296. they would

  1297. look back

  1298. on and

  1299. remember

  1300. eventually.

  1301. But they

  1302. were not

  1303. there in

  1304. this moment.

  1305. Still fresh

  1306. in the

  1307. people's

  1308. minds,

  1309. the resurrection

  1310. of Lazarus

  1311. as the

  1312. triumphal

  1313. entry took

  1314. place and

  1315. all of the

  1316. people who

  1317. remembered

  1318. Lazarus

  1319. were parading

  1320. in with that

  1321. company and

  1322. Jesus into

  1323. Jerusalem.

  1324. with the

  1325. triumphal

  1326. entry.

  1327. And even

  1328. the night

  1329. before Jesus

  1330. was crucified,

  1331. he points

  1332. to his

  1333. works in

  1334. John 14.

  1335. He says,

  1336. believe me

  1337. that I am

  1338. in the

  1339. Father and

  1340. the Father

  1341. is in me

  1342. or else

  1343. believe on

  1344. the account

  1345. of the

  1346. works

  1347. themselves.

  1348. Jesus had

  1349. given them

  1350. a witness.

  1351. Jesus'

  1352. confirming

  1353. power was

  1354. undeniable

  1355. proof of

  1356. his divinity.

  1357. proof of

  1358. his

  1359. authority.

  1360. God does

  1361. that for us

  1362. as well.

  1363. He gives

  1364. us confirming

  1365. witnesses.

  1366. The witness

  1367. of creation

  1368. to testify

  1369. to his

  1370. splendor

  1371. and glory.

  1372. The proof

  1373. of his

  1374. intervention

  1375. especially with

  1376. the people of

  1377. Israel throughout

  1378. history.

  1379. The proof

  1380. of a changed

  1381. life.

  1382. proof.

  1383. The proof

  1384. of answered

  1385. prayer.

  1386. The proof

  1387. of fulfilled

  1388. promises.

  1389. The proof

  1390. of abounding

  1391. joy.

  1392. The proof

  1393. of enduring

  1394. peace.

  1395. Jesus is not

  1396. afraid of the

  1397. evidence.

  1398. Jesus is not

  1399. afraid to

  1400. help us

  1401. understand that

  1402. the truth

  1403. claims that he

  1404. makes will be

  1405. things that he

  1406. will follow

  1407. through on.

  1408. He can be

  1409. trusted.

  1410. And as we

  1411. see in verse

  1412. 8, there

  1413. seems to be

  1414. evidence that

  1415. faith is

  1416. beginning to

  1417. rise in

  1418. John's heart.

  1419. But what

  1420. kind of faith

  1421. does John

  1422. have at this

  1423. point?

  1424. What does

  1425. John believe?

  1426. What is

  1427. going on in

  1428. his mind?

  1429. Is this

  1430. saving faith?

  1431. Or is this

  1432. something else?

  1433. And as a

  1434. side note, I

  1435. just want to

  1436. take a quick

  1437. detour for a

  1438. moment.

  1439. And I want to

  1440. encourage you

  1441. not only in

  1442. relationship to

  1443. the message

  1444. today, but I

  1445. want to encourage

  1446. you that these

  1447. are the kinds

  1448. of questions

  1449. you should be

  1450. asking yourself

  1451. in your own

  1452. Bible study.

  1453. Why is this

  1454. here?

  1455. Why does

  1456. John leave out

  1457. certain details?

  1458. Why is he

  1459. focused on

  1460. Mary?

  1461. What does it

  1462. mean that he

  1463. talks about

  1464. his faith?

  1465. What is he

  1466. really believing?

  1467. And so for

  1468. this last point,

  1469. I want to

  1470. kind of walk

  1471. you through

  1472. briefly some

  1473. of the steps

  1474. that you can

  1475. take for

  1476. yourself in

  1477. arriving at

  1478. some of the

  1479. answers to

  1480. big questions

  1481. in the

  1482. scripture.

  1483. Because my

  1484. premise now,

  1485. this point

  1486. number three,

  1487. is faith is

  1488. incomplete

  1489. without the

  1490. scripture.

  1491. Faith is

  1492. incomplete

  1493. without the

  1494. scripture.

  1495. You say,

  1496. now, wait

  1497. a second,

  1498. that's not

  1499. what I see

  1500. here.

  1501. That's not

  1502. what it seems

  1503. to indicate

  1504. in verse

  1505. eight.

  1506. It seems

  1507. to indicate

  1508. that John

  1509. shows up,

  1510. he sees

  1511. the tomb,

  1512. and he

  1513. believes.

  1514. But what

  1515. does verse

  1516. nine say?

  1517. for as

  1518. yet,

  1519. they did

  1520. not

  1521. understand

  1522. the

  1523. scripture,

  1524. that he

  1525. must rise

  1526. from the

  1527. dead.

  1528. Why does

  1529. John put

  1530. that there?

  1531. Because he

  1532. wants to

  1533. qualify the

  1534. kind of

  1535. faith that

  1536. he actually

  1537. had at this

  1538. point.

  1539. And it

  1540. was not a

  1541. faith

  1542. necessarily

  1543. in the

  1544. resurrection,

  1545. but a

  1546. faith in the

  1547. fact that

  1548. Jesus was

  1549. just gone.

  1550. commentators

  1551. are mixed

  1552. on this,

  1553. and I

  1554. am going

  1555. to shake

  1556. probably

  1557. dangerously

  1558. all of the

  1559. things that

  1560. the commentators

  1561. are saying,

  1562. because as

  1563. I study

  1564. through the

  1565. gospel,

  1566. I think

  1567. there's a

  1568. different

  1569. conclusion to

  1570. draw here.

  1571. So bear

  1572. with me as

  1573. I walk

  1574. this through

  1575. with you,

  1576. and I'm

  1577. going to put

  1578. it in your

  1579. hands to

  1580. decide whether

  1581. or not you're

  1582. going to agree

  1583. with me or

  1584. agree with

  1585. the commentators.

  1586. It's probably

  1587. safer to agree

  1588. with the

  1589. commentators.

  1590. Faith is

  1591. incomplete

  1592. without the

  1593. scripture.

  1594. Why do I

  1595. say that?

  1596. What is

  1597. believing here?

  1598. I want you

  1599. to understand

  1600. the use of

  1601. the word

  1602. believing

  1603. throughout the

  1604. gospel of

  1605. John is

  1606. not necessarily

  1607. believing to

  1608. faith in

  1609. salvation,

  1610. but believing

  1611. in the

  1612. moment.

  1613. Why do I

  1614. say that?

  1615. Let me show

  1616. you some

  1617. examples.

  1618. Keep your

  1619. finger in

  1620. John chapter

    John 20 chapter mention

  1621. 20,

  1622. I want

  1623. to try

  1624. to walk

  1625. through this

  1626. quickly,

  1627. so bear

  1628. with me.

  1629. If you

  1630. need my

  1631. notes,

  1632. I'm happy

  1633. to give

  1634. it to

  1635. you.

  1636. Look

  1637. with me

  1638. at the

  1639. beginning

  1640. of the

  1641. book,

  1642. John

    John 2:11

  1643. chapter 2,

  1644. verse 11.

  1645. I want you

  1646. to see this

  1647. for yourself

  1648. and even

  1649. circle them

  1650. as we go

  1651. through.

  1652. John

    John 2:11

  1653. chapter 2,

  1654. verse 11.

  1655. verse 11.

  1656. It says

  1657. this,

  1658. this,

  1659. the first

  1660. of his

  1661. signs,

  1662. Jesus did

  1663. at Cana

  1664. in Galilee

  1665. and manifested

  1666. his glory

  1667. and his

  1668. disciples

  1669. believed in

  1670. him.

  1671. This is the

  1672. wedding at

  1673. Cana.

  1674. This is

  1675. turning the

  1676. water to

  1677. wine.

  1678. And it

  1679. says that

  1680. his disciples

  1681. believed.

  1682. And yet,

  1683. if you know

  1684. anything about

  1685. the gospels,

  1686. you hear

  1687. Jesus in

  1688. the background

  1689. saying time

  1690. and time

  1691. and time

  1692. again,

  1693. oh you

  1694. of little

  1695. faith.

  1696. Does that

  1697. sound like

  1698. saving faith

  1699. to you?

  1700. They were

  1701. believing in

  1702. something.

  1703. They were

  1704. believing that

  1705. Jesus did

  1706. actually what

  1707. he did here,

  1708. but there was

  1709. something missing,

  1710. something

  1711. superficial

  1712. about their

  1713. faith.

  1714. Jump down

  1715. to verse 23

  1716. of chapter 2.

  1717. Now,

  1718. when he was

  1719. in Jerusalem

  1720. at the

  1721. Passover feast,

  1722. many believed

  1723. in his name.

  1724. What happened?

  1725. Many

  1726. believed

  1727. in his name

  1728. when they

  1729. saw the

  1730. signs that

  1731. he was

  1732. doing,

  1733. but

  1734. Jesus,

  1735. on his

  1736. part,

  1737. did not

  1738. entrust

  1739. himself to

  1740. them because

  1741. he knew

  1742. all people.

  1743. Basically,

  1744. Jesus knew

  1745. their hearts.

  1746. Jesus knew

  1747. how bankrupt

  1748. their faith

  1749. really was.

  1750. It was

  1751. faith for

  1752. the moment.

  1753. It wasn't

  1754. faith that

  1755. was enduring.

  1756. Turn a page

  1757. over with me

  1758. to John

    John 4:50

  1759. chapter 4,

  1760. verse 50.

  1761. John 4,

  1762. 50.

  1763. It says

  1764. this.

  1765. This is

  1766. Jesus healing

  1767. the official's

  1768. son.

  1769. It says,

  1770. Jesus said

  1771. to him,

  1772. go,

  1773. your son

  1774. will live.

  1775. The man

  1776. believed the

  1777. word that

  1778. Jesus spoke

  1779. to him

  1780. and went

  1781. on his

  1782. way.

  1783. But then

  1784. if you drop

  1785. down to

  1786. verse 53,

  1787. you see

  1788. something else.

  1789. the father

  1790. knew that

  1791. was the

  1792. hour when

  1793. Jesus had

  1794. said to

  1795. him,

  1796. your son

  1797. will live,

  1798. and he

  1799. himself

  1800. believed

  1801. in all

  1802. his

  1803. household.

  1804. What in

  1805. the world

  1806. is going

  1807. on here?

  1808. I thought

  1809. he was

  1810. already

  1811. believing.

  1812. So there

  1813. is examples

  1814. here of

  1815. progressing

  1816. faith.

  1817. That's my

  1818. point.

  1819. And as

  1820. you look

  1821. through the

  1822. gospel of

  1823. John,

  1824. you'll see

  1825. progressing

  1826. faith that's

  1827. taking shape

  1828. in the hearts

  1829. of people as

  1830. they're responding

  1831. to the

  1832. moment.

  1833. They're responding

  1834. to the stimuli

  1835. that they

  1836. have right

  1837. in front

  1838. of them,

  1839. whether it's

  1840. the words

  1841. of Jesus

  1842. or the

  1843. works of

  1844. Jesus.

  1845. But it's

  1846. not the

  1847. testimony of

  1848. enduring

  1849. faith.

  1850. There's

  1851. also examples

  1852. in the

  1853. gospel of

  1854. John of

  1855. defective

  1856. faith.

  1857. Examples of

  1858. defective

  1859. faith.

  1860. Turn with

  1861. me to

  1862. John chapter

    John 7 chapter mention

  1863. 7 for

  1864. one of

  1865. those

  1866. examples.

  1867. John

    John 7:31

  1868. chapter 7

  1869. verse

  1870. 31.

  1871. John 7

  1872. 31.

  1873. Yet,

  1874. many of

  1875. the people

  1876. believed in

  1877. him.

  1878. They said,

  1879. when the

  1880. Christ appears,

  1881. will he do

  1882. more signs

  1883. than this

  1884. man has

  1885. done?

  1886. Are you

  1887. kidding me?

  1888. Is he the

  1889. Christ or

  1890. not?

  1891. Are you

  1892. believing in

  1893. him as the

  1894. Messiah or

  1895. what?

  1896. What a

  1897. confused group

  1898. of individuals.

  1899. How about

  1900. in John

    John 8:30

  1901. chapter 8

  1902. verse 30?

  1903. Turn a page.

  1904. John chapter

    John 8:30

  1905. 8 verse 30.

  1906. As he was

  1907. saying these

  1908. things,

  1909. many believed

  1910. in him.

  1911. Well,

  1912. that's good.

  1913. But what do

  1914. we find?

  1915. As you work

  1916. your way through

  1917. the narrative,

  1918. you find that

  1919. Jesus actually

  1920. calls them

  1921. son of the

  1922. devil.

  1923. And he

  1924. reinforces to

  1925. them in verse

  1926. 45 that what

  1927. they thought was

  1928. faith was not

  1929. actually faith at

  1930. all.

  1931. Look at

  1932. John 8

  1933. 45.

  1934. But because

  1935. I tell you

  1936. the truth,

  1937. you do not

  1938. believe me.

  1939. Defective

  1940. faith.

  1941. Misplaced

  1942. faith.

  1943. It was not

  1944. genuine.

  1945. Okay.

  1946. So John

  1947. believes.

  1948. He believes

  1949. in the

  1950. evidence

  1951. immediately in

  1952. front of him.

  1953. But I

  1954. want you to

  1955. understand that

  1956. it is not

  1957. necessarily

  1958. saving faith.

  1959. It is faith

  1960. in the moment.

  1961. faith for

  1962. the present.

  1963. In seeing

  1964. the events

  1965. and knowing

  1966. that something

  1967. quite extraordinary

  1968. was taking

  1969. place but not

  1970. quite knowing

  1971. what.

  1972. And now we

  1973. find John's

  1974. emphasis on the

  1975. scripture in

  1976. verse 9.

  1977. That's our

  1978. final point this

  1979. morning.

  1980. John's

  1981. emphasis on the

  1982. scripture.

  1983. And we could

  1984. look at myriads

  1985. of passages

  1986. this morning

  1987. in the gospel

  1988. of John to

  1989. point out that

  1990. very fact.

  1991. But I just

  1992. want to point

  1993. to a couple

  1994. that you

  1995. should be

  1996. familiar with.

  1997. The first

  1998. is John

  1999. 1.1.

  2000. In the

  2001. beginning was

  2002. the word.

  2003. The word was

  2004. with God.

  2005. The word was

  2006. God.

  2007. We know

  2008. that word

  2009. is Jesus.

  2010. Jesus

  2011. throughout his

  2012. ministry points

  2013. to faith in

  2014. the father that

  2015. comes through

  2016. him.

  2017. And thus

  2018. comes through

  2019. the word.

  2020. You cannot

  2021. have faith

  2022. in God

  2023. apart from

  2024. Jesus.

  2025. And thus

  2026. you cannot

  2027. have faith

  2028. in God

  2029. apart from

  2030. the word.

  2031. Just jot

  2032. down John

    John 2:20–23

  2033. chapter 2

  2034. verses 20

  2035. to 23.

  2036. Again,

  2037. John points

  2038. to this

  2039. fact.

  2040. Jesus is

  2041. telling them

  2042. about the

  2043. temple.

  2044. He says

  2045. that it's

  2046. going to

  2047. what took

  2048. 46 years

  2049. to build.

  2050. He's going

  2051. to be able

  2052. to destroy

  2053. it and raise

  2054. it up in

  2055. three days.

  2056. They're like,

  2057. huh?

  2058. How is that

  2059. going to

  2060. work?

  2061. And it

  2062. says he's

  2063. speaking about

  2064. his body.

  2065. But then

  2066. this in

  2067. verse 22.

  2068. It says,

  2069. When therefore

  2070. he was raised

  2071. from the dead,

  2072. his disciples

  2073. remembered that

  2074. he had said

  2075. this and they

  2076. believed the

  2077. scripture.

  2078. That is

  2079. faith.

  2080. Believing

  2081. the scripture.

  2082. scripture.

  2083. That's why

  2084. John gives

  2085. so much

  2086. attention to

  2087. the scripture

  2088. in the

  2089. upper room

  2090. narrative,

  2091. in our

  2092. crucifixion

  2093. narrative.

  2094. More than

  2095. any other

  2096. gospel record

  2097. keeper,

  2098. John gives

  2099. attention to

  2100. the scripture.

  2101. In John

  2102. 13,

  2103. 18,

  2104. you have it

  2105. in your

  2106. notes.

  2107. It says,

  2108. but that the

  2109. scripture will

  2110. be fulfilled.

  2111. In John

  2112. 17,

  2113. 12,

  2114. that the

  2115. scripture might

  2116. be fulfilled.

  2117. In John

  2118. 19,

  2119. 24,

  2120. this was to

  2121. fulfill the

  2122. scripture.

  2123. John 19,

  2124. 28,

  2125. knowing that

  2126. all was now

  2127. finished,

  2128. said to

  2129. fulfill the

  2130. scripture.

  2131. John 29,

  2132. 19,

  2133. 36,

  2134. for these

  2135. things took

  2136. place that

  2137. the scripture

  2138. might be

  2139. fulfilled.

  2140. And now,

  2141. in 19,

  2142. 37,

  2143. again,

  2144. another

  2145. scripture,

  2146. they will

  2147. look on

  2148. him whom

  2149. they have

  2150. pierced.

  2151. And now

  2152. John draws

  2153. attention to

  2154. something that

  2155. is missing

  2156. in his

  2157. faith.

  2158. For as

  2159. yet,

  2160. they did

  2161. not understand

  2162. the

  2163. scripture.

  2164. Faith had

  2165. not yet

  2166. dawned on

  2167. John's

  2168. heart,

  2169. but it was

  2170. beginning to

  2171. rise.

  2172. Faith would

  2173. not be

  2174. complete until

  2175. Christ initiated

  2176. the process.

  2177. That's what

  2178. we find

  2179. in our

  2180. study next

  2181. week with

  2182. Mary.

  2183. That's what

  2184. we find in

  2185. the gospel

  2186. of Luke

  2187. when Jesus

  2188. shows up to

  2189. the disciples

  2190. in the upper

  2191. room and it

  2192. says,

  2193. and he revealed

  2194. to them all

  2195. the things

  2196. related to the

  2197. scriptures.

  2198. He opened

  2199. their eyes

  2200. to see it.

  2201. Finally,

  2202. faith would

  2203. come.

  2204. the

  2205. resurrection

  2206. means life

  2207. for those

  2208. who believe.

  2209. Life for

  2210. those who

  2211. believe

  2212. personally.

  2213. Are you

  2214. here today

  2215. and you

  2216. have

  2217. personally

  2218. staked

  2219. your claim

  2220. in the

  2221. unwavering

  2222. faith in

  2223. Christ?

  2224. faith not

  2225. just for

  2226. the moment

  2227. but faith

  2228. that endures.

  2229. Listen to

  2230. what Paul

  2231. says in

  2232. 1 Corinthians

  2233. 1.18.

  2234. He says,

  2235. For the

  2236. message of

  2237. the cross

  2238. is foolishness

  2239. to those

  2240. who are

  2241. perishing,

  2242. present,

  2243. active,

  2244. continuous.

  2245. But to

  2246. those of

  2247. us who

  2248. are being

  2249. saved,

  2250. it is

  2251. the power

  2252. of God.

  2253. Present,

  2254. active,

  2255. continuous.

  2256. Not just

  2257. for some

  2258. time in

  2259. the past

  2260. but the

  2261. gospel connects

  2262. to your

  2263. heart today

  2264. and tomorrow

  2265. and enduring

  2266. for the rest

  2267. of your

  2268. life.

  2269. You see

  2270. how God

  2271. changes

  2272. everything

  2273. for you.

  2274. Changes

  2275. your

  2276. parenting,

  2277. changes

  2278. your

  2279. marriage,

  2280. he changes

  2281. your work,

  2282. he changes

  2283. your

  2284. neighboring,

  2285. he changes

  2286. your priorities

  2287. and how you

  2288. do your

  2289. finances,

  2290. he changes

  2291. your perspective

  2292. as a student,

  2293. he changes

  2294. everything for

  2295. you.

  2296. Not just

  2297. for a time

  2298. in the past

  2299. but for

  2300. today.

  2301. Are you

  2302. a person

  2303. of faith?

  2304. Without

  2305. faith,

  2306. it is

  2307. impossible

  2308. to please

  2309. him.

  2310. You want

  2311. to please

  2312. God?

  2313. He makes

  2314. it possible

  2315. through

  2316. his son

  2317. Jesus.

  2318. Not just

  2319. for those

  2320. who don't

  2321. know Jesus

  2322. and need

  2323. to come

  2324. to salvation

  2325. but for

  2326. those who

  2327. know him

  2328. and need

  2329. to remind

  2330. themselves

  2331. of that

  2332. fact

  2333. day after

  2334. day and

  2335. be people

  2336. who are

  2337. believing.

  2338. Are you

  2339. somebody

  2340. today

  2341. who is

  2342. believing

  2343. in him?

  2344. And is it

  2345. changing

  2346. everything

  2347. for you?

  2348. Let's pray.

  2349. Lord,

  2350. we want

  2351. to be

  2352. people

  2353. who are

  2354. believing.

  2355. Not just

  2356. for a

  2357. moment

  2358. and not

  2359. just

  2360. because

  2361. of the

  2362. immediate

  2363. situation

  2364. that we

  2365. see.

  2366. The evidence

  2367. of God

  2368. that shows

  2369. up here

  2370. and there

  2371. through our

  2372. lives.

  2373. But we

  2374. want to be

  2375. enduring.

  2376. We want

  2377. to change

  2378. our priorities.

  2379. Change

  2380. our

  2381. perspectives.

  2382. Change

  2383. our

  2384. orientation

  2385. as people

  2386. who are

  2387. not looking

  2388. to self.

  2389. We're not

  2390. looking to

  2391. please and

  2392. gratify our

  2393. own sense

  2394. of desire

  2395. but looking

  2396. to please

  2397. you.

  2398. Who are

  2399. seeking first

  2400. the kingdom

  2401. of God

  2402. and his

  2403. righteousness.

  2404. May that

  2405. be said of

  2406. us,

  2407. Lord.

  2408. We pray

  2409. in Jesus'

  2410. name.

  2411. Amen.
