  1. Amen. Let's turn again in our Bibles,

  2. this time to 1st Thessalonians chapter 2, and we're going to

  3. read from verse 13 to the end, First Thessalonians chapter 2,

    1 Thessalonians 2:13

  4. verse 13, right through to verse 20.

  5. The words will come up on screen for those online.

  6. The words of course of our reading are from the Authorised

  7. Version or properly the King James Bible.

  8. Let's hear God's word First Thessalonians chapter 2 verse

    1 Thessalonians 2:13

  9. 13. For this cause also thank we God

  10. without ceasing, because when you received the word of God,

  11. which you heard of us, you received it not as the word of

  12. men, but as it isn't truth, the word of God which effectually

  13. worketh also in you that believe.

  14. For ye brethren became followers of the churches of God, which in

  15. Judea are in Christ Jesus. For ye also have suffered like

  16. things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews,

  17. who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have

  18. persecuted us. And they please not God, and are

  19. contrary to all men, forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles,

  20. that they might be saved to fill up their sins all way.

  21. For the wrath has come upon them to the uttermost.

  22. But we, brethren, been taken from you for a short time in

  23. presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly

  24. to see your face with great desire, Wherefore we would have

  25. come unto you, even I Paul once and again.

  26. But Satan hindered us. For what is our hope, or joy, or

  27. crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence

  28. of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

  29. For ye are our glory and joy. Amen.

  30. We know the Lord is stamped with his own approval and blessing,

  31. this reading of his own precious and infallible Word.

  32. Amen. Now this morning we're going to

  33. continue with our series of expository sermons in the book

  34. of First Thessalonians, and my text today is taken from First

    1 Thessalonians 2:17

  35. Thessalonians chapter 2, verses 17 and 18.

  36. Let's read them together. First Thessalonians, chapter 2,

    1 Thessalonians 2:17

  37. verse 17. But we, brethren, being taken

  38. from you for a short time in presence, not in heart,

  39. endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great

  40. desire. Wherefore we would have come

  41. unto you, even I Paul, once and again.

  42. But Satan hindered us. Notice the words.

  43. But Satan hindered us. And there you have, I believe,

  44. the greatest harassment from the greatest hinderer in the world.

  45. Let's remember the context how the Gospel came to Thessalonica.

  46. When the apostle Paul entered the city, he went to the Jew

  47. first for three Sabbath days. That's Jewish Sabbath, Friday

  48. night to Saturday night. He met with them in the

  49. synagogue, and there he preached Christ and the gospel of saving

  50. graves unto them. And if you turn to Acts chapter

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  51. 17, and you'll read there in the verses one and two of the

  52. message that Paul preached at that time, it says, and Paul

  53. first two, as his manner was within unto them.

  54. And three Sabbath days reasoned with the mouth of the Scriptures

  55. opening and alleging that Christ must needs have suffered and

  56. risen again from the dead, and that this Jesus whom I preach

  57. unto you is Christ. You see, the Lord Jesus Christ

  58. lay at the heart of God's great plan of salvation.

  59. He is God's anointed prophet, priest, and king.

  60. As a result of this preaching, many of the Jews got saved.

  61. It says there in Acts chapter 17 and in the verse 4.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  62. And some of them believed and consorted with Paul and Silas,

  63. and of the devout Jews a great multitude, and of the chief

  64. woman, not a few. However, as this always happens,

  65. not only were people saved, but many were stirred up and became

  66. angry and mad with Paul, it says in verse 5.

  67. But the Jews, which believed not, notice what they did.

  68. They were moved with envy. They got together, a bunch of

  69. men of the baser sort and set the whole city an uproar.

  70. And their mindset was that Paul had to die.

  71. You see, this was a livid and lethal mob who were bent on

  72. Paul's death and destruction. So as a result, the brethren and

  73. sisters, no doubt at Fest and I, get sent Paul away by night to

  74. the town of Berea. I believe these believers were

  75. loathed to send Paul away, but they did so to help him.

  76. They did so to preserve his life.

  77. And after he left, this is what happened.

  78. Then the devil used men to spread some wicked lies about

  79. Paul. Here was the first lie he fled

  80. to see of his own skin. He is more interested in self

  81. than new seals. More than that, he was the

  82. second lie. He has no intention of coming

  83. back. He he said he would come back,

  84. but he has no intention of coming back.

  85. We are sorry that you get carried away with this fellow.

  86. You get carried away with a smooth words, but really he, he

  87. couldn't care less for you. And now you're suffering public

  88. ridicule. Now you're being persecuted

  89. because you believe the things that he taught you.

  90. Listen to us. Here's the third lie.

  91. He doesn't care about you. Now in light of these lies, in

  92. light of these false allegations, Paul, after Timothy

  93. had returned with the good news of the Thessalonians, faith and

  94. love and Christ. Paul explains in part of his

  95. letter that he dealt with these lies and false allegations.

  96. Look at verse 17. But we brethren, been taken from

  97. you for a short time in presence, not in heart,

  98. endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great

  99. desire. He's telling them, My intention

  100. was only to be taken from you for a short time.

  101. Look, I endeavoured to see your face.

  102. I made repeated attempts to return to you in Fest and Anka

  103. because I greatly desired to see you face to face.

  104. But this is what happened. Notice the words.

  105. But Satan hindered us. Literally.

  106. The devil instigated all of this.

  107. He instigated the uproar that forced Paul to withdraw from

  108. Thessalonians. He was behind the lie that Paul

  109. fled to save his own skin. He was behind the lie that Paul

  110. had no interest or intention in returning.

  111. He spread the lie that Paul didn't care for these people.

  112. Now you understand why Paul wrote these words.

  113. But Satan hindered us. Let's think for a few minutes of

  114. the greatest harassment of the greatest hinderer in the world.

  115. Think of the identity of the greatest hinderer in the world.

  116. If you underline the word Satan, understand.

  117. This morning we'll ask the question, Who's the greatest

  118. adversary of God's people? Who's the greatest accuser of

  119. the brethren with lies and falsehood?

  120. Who's behind every lie? Who's behind every accusation?

  121. Who's behind every falsehood? Well, there's one being that

  122. stands head and shoulders above them all.

  123. And it's not a man, it's not a woman, it's not a politician,

  124. it's not a king or a Prince. It's one being.

  125. And his name is Satan. But Satan hindered us, young

  126. people. Satan is a real spiritual being.

  127. Young people, there's a real personal devil.

  128. Young people, there's an invisible, malignant, powerful,

  129. unmerciful being who is the real enemy of your soul, the real

  130. enemy of God in the world, the real enemy of Jesus Christ, and

  131. the real, a real enemy of every aspect of the work of God and

  132. the work of Greece. Let me illustrate how you sit

  133. and predict it. Today he's presented as a

  134. cartoon character, a man in a red suit with a fork horns.

  135. He's presented to us as some sort of ludicrous monster.

  136. Now he is a monster but, but he's presented as a ludicrous

  137. monster. But I want to tell you he's not

  138. a ludicrous he's a real dangerous monster.

  139. He's a real powerful enemy. Satan is a real spiritual being.

  140. Do you know that Satan was created by God?

  141. Ezekiel, chapter 28, Isaiah 14. I haven't time to turn to that

    Ezekiel 28 chapter mention

  142. this morning. Did you know that Satan rebelled

  143. against God in eternity past being full of pride?

  144. He led 1/3 of the angels in heaven in that rebellion and God

  145. cast them out of heaven. You could read that Isaiah 28

  146. Ezekiel or Ezekiel 28 Isaiah chapter 14.

    Isaiah 14 chapter mention

  147. He's a very powerful being. Now, he's not God's equal, He's

  148. not almighty, He's not all powerful, but he is very

  149. powerful. He is seductive.

  150. He is very subtle and he's very dangerous.

  151. And in fact, we read there in the book of Matthew, in Matthew

    Matthew 25:41

  152. chapter 25 verse 41, these words depart from me.

  153. You curse it into everlasting fire.

  154. Notice these words prepared for the devil and his angels.

  155. God prepared hell for the devil and the fallen angels.

  156. Now what's the devil like? Well, we read there in the

  157. Gospel of John in John chapter 8 and in the verse 44.

    John 8 chapter mention

  158. The Lord Jesus said this, Speaking of Satan.

  159. Listen to these words, John 8 and 44.

  160. Ye are of your father the devil and the lust of your father.

  161. Ye will do. He was a murderer from the

  162. beginning. See, you've got to remember the

  163. murder of Abel by Key and his brother, who was the instigator

  164. behind that murder. And abode not in the truth,

  165. because there's no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he

  166. speaketh of his own, for he's a liar and the father of it.

  167. Read over here in first John chapter 5 and in the verse 19

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  168. first John 5 and 19 and we know that we are of God and the whole

  169. world lieth in wickedness. The the idea is of lying in the

  170. lap of the wicked. 1 and over in first Peter and chapter 5 and

  171. verse 8 we read be super vigilant because your adversary

  172. the devil is a roaring lion walketh about seeking whom you

  173. may devour. You think of a roaring lion and

  174. a roaring lion stalking the streets for food, seeking to

  175. devour. And that's a picture of the

  176. devil and one other reference in Revelation chapter 12 and in the

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  177. verse 9 we read, and the great dragon was cast out, that old

  178. serpent called the devil in Satan, which deceiveth the whole

  179. world. He was cast out into the earth,

  180. and his angels were cast out with him.

  181. Now there's 13 different names for Satan in the Bible.

  182. This is one of them, Satan. And every one of those names

  183. reveal a very specific aspect of his character.

  184. Notice we've read here who's a murderer from the beginning.

  185. We've read in John 844 that he was the father of lies, and the

  186. devil is very good at spreading lies.

  187. He's very good at sowing seeds of doubt and sowing seeds of

  188. confusion. And he'll charge God and his

  189. people with being unfair and unreasonable.

  190. And at times he'll appear in the world as a roaring lion, and

  191. other times he'll come as a subtle serpent.

  192. And other times he'll come as he's doing today as an Angel of

  193. light. And he's different guises.

  194. And of course he uses guile and subtlety.

  195. One of the things I can say about the devil is this, that

  196. Satan hates God. He hates truth and

  197. righteousness. He hates the person and work of

  198. the Lord Jesus with every favour of his being.

  199. He's consumed with that hatred in his pride.

  200. He's full of hatred now, even hatred for carried off FPC and

  201. every other true Reformed Church.

  202. He's full of hatred 24/7. Young people, there's no let up.

  203. Young people, there's no mercy shown young people, there's no

  204. quarter given. He does everything that he can

  205. to hinder the work of God. And that activity has been going

  206. on since the Garden of Eden. It's going on now.

  207. It's going on day and night. If we can only grasp this,

  208. here's the number one arch enemy of God.

  209. He's an actual evil being. He's behind all the evil in the

  210. world. He is holy evil WHOLLY.

  211. He is completely evil and deprived.

  212. He's powerful, yes. He is seductive, yes, but he's

  213. also dangerous, very dangerous. He's called the God of this

  214. world. We've already read in first John

  215. 5 and 19 that the whole world lies in the lap of wickedness.

  216. And the idea behind that is of a of a child in the arms of its

  217. mother. And the whole world lies in the

  218. lap of the wicked one, the world of unconverted souls.

  219. And one of the things that the devil does is he he wages a war

  220. against the Lord and his people. The devil, as I've said, hates

  221. God. The devil opposes the triune

  222. God. He opposes the part of the work

  223. of Christ. He opposes the preaching of the

  224. gospel. He opposes the preacher of the

  225. word of God in the pulpit and on the street corner.

  226. He opposes the people of God. Brothers and sisters, let's

  227. learn something this morning. We are in a spiritual war.

  228. There's a spiritual battle going on and this battle began when

  229. man fell into sin and the state of sin and mystery.

  230. It began in heaven. The devil or Satan is a real

  231. being, and the devil is the adversary of every true born

  232. again Christian, the adversary of every church, the adversary

  233. of every preacher and evangelist, youth worker, Sunday

  234. school teacher, the adversary of every St and is your adversary

  235. today the identity of the great accuser of the people of God.

  236. Secondly, and very quickly, I want you to think of the

  237. strategy of the greatest hinder in the world.

  238. If you come to our text that says, but Satan hindered us,

  239. look at that word hindered. It's very important that you

  240. understand this. In the Greek New Testament, the

  241. idea is the word hindered means to break up the road.

  242. Now you, you think of an advancing army, it's coming to

  243. attack the enemy position and the enemy breaks up the road to

  244. make it difficult to advance to, to stop a smooth progress.

  245. Think of Modern Warfare. They they bomb the road to slow

  246. down the advance of the attacking troops.

  247. They'll bomb bridges and key strategic points.

  248. Think of a road that's full of holes, big holes and small holes

  249. making it impossible for smooth progress.

  250. Big holes that would break the wheels of a chariot in the 1st

  251. century. Big holes that would break the

  252. spring of a car in in today's modern era.

  253. That's the picture of the word hindered to break up the road,

  254. to make it difficult to advance. There's another picture here in

  255. the word hindered and you think of a race.

  256. Think of somebody running hard. He's got a tie in the finish

  257. line and someone just cuts in, someone elbows them out of the

  258. way, and that cut in as so severe that you're elbowed off

  259. course. That's the picture, and that's

  260. what the devil does, Paul says. I was coming to see you in

  261. Thessalonica. Unfortunately, the devil put

  262. roadblocks in the road. Unfortunately, the devil cut in

  263. and elbowed me out to stop me coming to see you.

  264. And I tried repeatedly. I made several attempts, but

  265. each time I tried, the roadblocks were there.

  266. Each time I tried, I was being elbowed off course.

  267. Yes, I know God is sovereign. Yes, I know the Lord allowed the

  268. devil to do it for his own purpose.

  269. But the real culprit behind my hindering and coming to see you

  270. face to face is Satan. I want you to notice something.

  271. If you read Acts 17 very carefully, think of the Jews of

  272. Paul's day. They didn't dismiss or reject

  273. Paul's sermon about Christ and preaching the gospel on

  274. theological grounds. They they didn't pick up the Old

  275. Testament Scriptures and say, now hold on Paul, you're

  276. preaching out of the Scriptures. You've taken that out of context

  277. or this is not right or that's not right.

  278. No, they didn't respond theologically.

  279. They didn't respond doctrinally. How did they respond?

  280. They accused Paul on political grounds.

  281. You're turning the world upside down.

  282. They accused Paul using a political argument.

  283. You have another king. You you reject Caesar.

  284. You bow the need of Jesus Christ.

  285. And you see what followed using that political argument was

  286. physical persecution. And I want you to see that

  287. that's how they hindered him. They cited and used physical

  288. persecution. There was a riot in

  289. Thessalonica. Read Acts 17 and don't we see

  290. that today? Very same argument used against

  291. the Bible believing church. Same argument used against Bible

  292. believing preachers. Preachers today who preach in

  293. the streets, especially in England, are accused of hate

  294. crimes. They're accused of hitting the

  295. LGBTQ plus community. They're accused of teaching

  296. things that don't fit in with the modern world.

  297. Because we're anti evolutionist. Because we're anti abortionist.

  298. Why? Because the Bible teaches that.

  299. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

  300. Because the Bible teaches that thou shall not murder.

  301. And we and we condemn the murder of the innocent and condemn the

  302. murder of the unborn. We point out that God hates the

  303. hands that shed innocent blood. And yet we're told, oh, but you

  304. don't fit in with the modern world.

  305. And what do they do? They resort to lies, hate crime.

  306. They, they, they resort to function charges.

  307. And when that's not enough, then they resort to violence, even

  308. murder. You, you think of the context

  309. here that the murder of dear Charlie Kirk, why was Shirley

  310. Kirk murdered? They didn't come with

  311. theological debate. They they didn't come with a

  312. doctrinal reasoning. They didn't come with the

  313. Scriptures in hand and say Charlie, but the Bible says no.

  314. They they couldn't answer him. So they came with what?

  315. They came with physical violence.

  316. They came with murder in their mind and in their heart because

  317. they couldn't debate Charlie Kirk, because they had no

  318. answer. So they resorted what to to

  319. murder him. And that's exactly what the

  320. world does. And that's exactly 1 of the

  321. tactics of the devil. And of course, we know that at

  322. this time there was a period of intense persecution against the

  323. Christian Church, and the whole import was to wipe it out and

  324. destroy the church all together before it really got off the

  325. ground. And that's one of the devil's

  326. subtle movements. He's behind it.

  327. Remember what we read in Acts 16 and in the verse sorry at

  328. Matthew 16 and the verse 18, we have the Lord Jesus on his

  329. promise. And he says this in Matthew

    Matthew 16:18

  330. chapter 16 verse 18, a tremendous promise.

  331. He says, thou art Peter, and upon this rock I'll build my

  332. church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

  333. In Ephesians 6 and 12, we're told, for we wrestle not against

  334. flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers,

  335. against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against

  336. spiritual wickedness in high places.

  337. And we see this more and more happening in the UK.

  338. And the Christian Church is vulnerable to this.

  339. And this persecution will continue to grow and be pursued.

  340. And we need to be prepared to withstand that.

  341. Here's Paul. And he's urged to flee from his

  342. life because his life was in danger.

  343. And if they could, they would have murdered Paul.

  344. Let me just point out very quickly, the devil uses doubt.

  345. Hath God said the Garden of Eden?

  346. There's a battle going on in the mind.

  347. There's a battle going on for the Bible today.

  348. Doubt about God, doubt about the blood atonement, doubt about the

  349. scriptures of truth, doubt about heaven, doubt about hell, doubt

  350. about who Christ is, who, who's behind all this doubt?

  351. What would? The answer is?

  352. The devil himself. And you know that one time when

  353. Campbell Morgan, I think, was about 19 years of age, he was

  354. reading books by Charles Darwin, Thomas Huckley, Herbert Spencer,

  355. all to do with evolution, all to do with a different world view

  356. than what he had. And he doubted the Bible.

  357. He doubted God. He doubted Christ.

  358. He doubted the plan of salvation.

  359. You know what he did? He locked those books along with

  360. his own Bible in a cupboard, turned the key.

  361. He says he could hear the click. And he went to the bookshop and

  362. he bought himself a new Bible. And for quite a number of months

  363. he locked himself away with his Bible and all he had, he had no

  364. books, no commentaries. He he didn't read anything else

  365. but the Bible. And he became absolutely

  366. convinced of the veracity and truth of the Holy Scriptures.

  367. And he says in 1883, the Bible found me.

  368. And he continued with that mindset right up to 1938 until

  369. he died. You see, the devil uses doubt.

  370. He doubted. He got that young preacher of

  371. doubt about the the, the truthfulness of what the Bible

  372. was teaching. The devil uses discord and how

  373. often he can sow siege of discord among the brethren.

  374. The devil uses deception. Think of Luke chapter 8 and

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  375. verse 12. Remember the parable of the

  376. sore, the seed that fell on the Stony ground.

  377. Remember the fowls of the air came and took away the seed.

  378. And the Lord Jesus used that as an illustration.

  379. And this is what he says in Luke chapter 8 and verse 12 those by

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  380. the wayside are they that hear then cometh the devil and take

  381. of the way the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe

  382. and be saved. You see, every time there's a

  383. gospel mission, you're trying to get people out under the sound

  384. of the gospel. You're trying to get them into

  385. the meeting and they're they're they're not interested.

  386. They haven't got any intention of coming.

  387. Why? Because there's an interference

  388. going on. And when they hear the word of

  389. God preached to them and they're told about their sin and their

  390. need of a saviour, then immediately there's fearance in

  391. their mind. The devil comes and takes it

  392. away from them. Why?

  393. Because he doesn't want them to be saved.

  394. He doesn't want them to believe. And that's what I mean, he uses

  395. deception. People don't know what's going

  396. on, that they're not fully aware of what is taking place in their

  397. heart and mind. They're not conscious that the

  398. devil is the back of this. The devil also uses destruction

  399. and already mentioned that the devil felt threatened here by

  400. Paul and his ministry. He acted as he desired.

  401. He resorted to a destructive tactic that let's murder Paul,

  402. let's take Paul out of the road. And of course, he forgot that

  403. Matthew chapter 16 verse 18 undergirds the work of God.

    Matthew 16:18

  404. And there is a real work for God going on around the world today.

  405. And the devil is seeking not only to sow doubt, to not work

  406. and sow discord and bring about distraction, but the devil is

  407. using a destructive tactic when he feels threatened.

  408. And he felt threatened by Paul, then he adopted the destructive

  409. tactic. Here's the man of God, and he

  410. was a threat to Satan, and every praying man of God is a threat

  411. to Satan, and every preaching man of God who's preaching

  412. Christ in the gospel is a threat to Satan.

  413. And every man who practises true religion to the glory of God is

  414. a threat to Satan. Paul and sailors were a threat

  415. to the devil's Kingdom, so their lives were threatened by the

  416. devil. And sadly, although Paul's life

  417. at this time was spared, some lives have been taken and were

  418. taken. We're conscious of that today.

  419. See, the devil fears a praying St.

  420. He fears A preaching ministry. The devil fears A practising

  421. Christian. The devil rejects a life of

  422. fear, the love and joy in the Holy Ghost.

  423. Remember it was said of the sons of Sceva Jesus.

  424. I know Paul. I know who are you?

  425. She's the devil, you Paul and the devil felt threatened by

  426. Paul and the devil moved to destroy him, not by doubt and

  427. discord and deception, but by destruction.

  428. A perilous Christians no threat to the devil preaching a false

  429. Christ and another gospel. There's no threat to the devil.

  430. The devil smiles at that and I'm practising Christian.

  431. Well, it's what it is, a non practising Christian.

  432. It's absolutely no threat to the devil, but a life of faithful

  433. service, a life of joy and peace in the Holy Ghost is a real

  434. threat to the devil. Could I also suggest that the

  435. devil uses distraction? Remember Peter, one of Christ's

  436. disciples? He's full of good intentions.

  437. The Saviour spoke about going to the cross to die.

  438. What did Peter say? Not so, Lord, that's not going

  439. to happen. We're not going to allow that to

  440. happen. And what did the Lord Jesus say

  441. to Peter? Read it there in Matthew chapter

    Matthew 16:20

  442. 16, verses 20 and following. Get thee behind me, Satan, for

  443. thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things

  444. that be of man. See, Peter was not conscious, I

  445. believe, of Satan at work in his life.

  446. He was not conscious that he was a tool in the hand of the devil,

  447. but he was. The devil used Judas to destroy

  448. Christ due to a love of money. The devil influenced Judas.

  449. He entered into Judas and the devil was allowed to attack Paul

  450. physically. Remember the thorn in the flesh,

  451. the impairment of the eyes, a messenger of Satan to buffet

  452. him, and the devil used it to attack him to hurt Paul.

  453. God doesn't love you, Paul. God doesn't care for you.

  454. Why would he allow you to be like this?

  455. He was all a lie but but that was the devil's tactic.

  456. He was using distraction. He was using this means to get

  457. Paul away from focusing on God's tasks for him.

  458. He prayed about it. Remember 3 times and God says my

  459. grace is sufficient for you. Paul was the most useful bald

  460. headed man with a defective speech, with poor eyesight, and

  461. yet that was the very man that God used, one of the most

  462. prominent men in the New Testament beside the Lord Jesus

  463. Christ. 17 chapters in the book of Acts are given to Paul. 14

  464. letters in the New Testament are from this man's pen according to

  465. the mind of God. I'll tell you one other thing,

  466. the devil uses disruption. He tries to disrupt the

  467. Christian Church in his work. His aim is to shut down

  468. Christian fellowship. His aim is to distrust, disrupt

  469. the life and witness of the church.

  470. He'll get Christians to fall out.

  471. He he'd cause a misunderstanding.

  472. He'd spread a falsehood. He he'll use pride, he'll use

  473. jealousy. He'll use envy.

  474. He'll use a wrong word. He'll use a wrong look.

  475. See, it doesn't take much to wreck a church.

  476. Sure. It doesn't doesn't take much to

  477. destroy a work takes takes a lot to build it up, but it doesn't

  478. take much to wreck a work. And see the devil is at work in

  479. these things. And the devil hates the gospel,

  480. hates the church, hates the preacher, the people of God.

  481. He hates church fellowship. He hates Sunday worship, he

  482. hates faithful Christian service.

  483. So we need to be on our guard and that's why we need to be in

  484. our place in the Lord's Day, and that's why we need to be filled

  485. with a love for the Saints as well as a love for the Saviour.

  486. Make sure that the devil doesn't use us as one of his tools to

  487. sow doubt, discord, or to sow distraction or sow distortion or

  488. certainly to be destructive in any one way.

  489. That's the strategy of the devil very quickly.

  490. And with this, we'll finish this morning.

  491. Think of the victory over the greatest hinderer in the world,

  492. Paul says if we look back at her text.

  493. But Satan hindered us. How was that possible?

  494. How could he elbow Paul out of the road?

  495. How could he set up roadblocks from Paul entering into the

  496. Church of Thessalonica? Surely Paul was the Lord's

  497. servant. Well, you see, I have to say

  498. this. I believe the Lord allowed it.

  499. I believe the Lord permitted it. I believe the Lord is sovereign

  500. and the Lord overruled. The Lord had a double purpose

  501. here. He allowed Satan to do what he

  502. did, but he had a greater purpose.

  503. Satan only did what he did under God.

  504. We think of the move of Satan against Job and what God allowed

  505. him to do against Job and he was allowed to inflict them with

  506. boils and ill health, but he wasn't allowed to take his life.

  507. You see, under God, when Paul was absent from a face to face

  508. fellowship with the Church of Theft and Anka, whenever we

  509. Timothy come back with a faithful report of how the

  510. Saints were getting on, they were full of faith and full of

  511. love and full of joy in the Holy Ghost.

  512. What did God lead Paul to do? Wrote 2 letters to the church.

  513. First Thessalonians. Second Thessalonians.

  514. Oh, Paul's ministry was over his, his voice was long since

  515. silent. And yet we have what Paul wrote

  516. and he wrote it to the Church of Thessalonica.

  517. The Thessalonians received this word in the 1st letter and also

  518. in the second letter. You see, they've got the written

  519. word or they hadn't got the man of God face to face.

  520. The man of God's voice was silent, but they had something

  521. better, something more wonderful.

  522. They had the written word. He does love us.

  523. He does care for us, He does feel for us.

  524. Look, He's written us a message and He's explained it all to us,

  525. how he couldn't come face to face because Satan hindered him.

  526. But the Lord is sovereign. The Lord has overruled.

  527. If you turn in closing to turn to this passage in Second Peter

  528. and we'll look at this here as we finish in Second Peter

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  529. chapter 1. Here's Peter and it says verse

  530. 19. We have also a more sure word of

  531. prophecy. Where unto you do well, that you

  532. take heed is unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until

  533. the day dawn and the day star arise in your hearts.

  534. You see, this was Peter and he's saying to those to whom he was

  535. writing verse 16. We haven't followed Conley

  536. devised fables whom we made known unto you the power and

  537. coming of our Lord Jesus. He says, but we were

  538. eyewitnesses of His Majesty. Look at verse 17, For he

  539. received from God the Father honour and glory, when there

  540. came such a voice unto him from the excellent mind, the

  541. excellent glory. This is my beloved Son in whom

  542. I'm well pleased. He says in verse 18.

  543. And this voice which came from heaven, we heard when we were

  544. with him in the holy mind, He's saying, look, listen to us, the

  545. mount of Transfiguration, we were there, we saw the power and

  546. glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. We were eyewitnesses of His

  547. Majesty, but we're not depending on that as an eyewitness.

  548. We're not just presenting that to you.

  549. We have something more. We also have a more sure word of

  550. prophecy. For unto you do well heed.

  551. And of course, what is referenced here is the written

  552. word of God. Paul didn't leave them fables or

  553. myths. Are we stories?

  554. Paul, led by the Holy Ghost, penned these two letters to this

  555. church. They did only visit it for about

  556. 3 weeks or maybe 4. Paul hadn't forgotten them.

  557. The devil was a liar, Paul. It was a lie to say couldn't

  558. care less because in the end the people got the eternal abiding

  559. word of God. The people were left with a more

  560. sure word than even from the lips of Paul himself, words that

  561. came inspired by God. And that's the victory of the

  562. greatest hinderer in the world. It is written in the Word of

  563. God. I trust and pray this morning

  564. that what I've shared will be helpful.

  565. And I pray that we'll get a glimpse of the great hinderer in

  566. the world. Remember his identity, remember

  567. his strategy, and let's remember how we can be victorious over

  568. him today.
