  1. I would like you to turn in your Bibles this morning to Isaiah chapter 9 and at the outset

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Format that's going to press it together into several central and critical themes.

  4. As we begin our study of the Word of God, it goes without saying that the foundation of our study is the Word

  5. and we are undeniably dependent upon prayer to make it effective that I speak as one who has been appointed by God to do so

  6. and that your hearts are prepared to hear it and then to apply it practically.

  7. Let me make this point clear at the very beginning.

  8. The purpose of preaching is ultimately to put us on the spot of saying yes or no to God.

  9. The Word is given to us and it is valuable for life and godliness.

  10. And it's there for our instruction, for our edification, for our correction.

  11. And I have no doubt that there are individuals here today that need to hear explicitly what God's Word has to say today.

  12. I would appeal to you to be a good listener and to depend upon the enabling of the Holy Spirit to hear that Word

  13. and to apply it to your life in practical terms that you may grow in godliness and grace.

  14. Some of you are here and do not know the Lord Jesus Christ.

  15. I'm not certain of all who is not here as a believer, but I look at the group that God has put here together

  16. and I recognize that there are some today that need the Savior and they need to come to faith.

  17. And so I would appeal that as you listen, you say,

  18. Lord, I would rather hear it now than in eternity.

  19. And I'd rather respond now than later.

  20. I want us to begin by looking at this passage in broad terms and kind of summarize it this way.

  21. As we look at Isaiah chapter 9 and move our way through the remainder of the text that we're going to look at this morning,

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  22. one of the things that I want you to start with is recognizing this,

  23. that God is the judge of the whole earth and He can be trusted to deal with sin.

  24. Have you ever found yourself kind of frustrated that God hasn't dealt with others a little more rapidly than He has, actually?

  25. I mean, I'll give you an illustration that kind of resonates with me.

  26. I'm one of those people that for the most part likes to follow the rules, particularly when you're driving.

  27. And nothing irks me more than when I am stopped in traffic and somebody takes it upon themselves to use the berm to move on down the road

  28. because they have to go somewhere much more important pace than me.

  29. And so I'm hoping, you know I'm praying at that time?

  30. I'm praying that they will run right into the back of a squad car that is parked in the berm and be stopped, smack,

  31. and then get rid in a ticket and I can drive on by going, ha, ha, ha, ha, you know.

  32. We'd like God to deal with sin, right?

  33. Particularly with other people.

  34. The fact of the matter is, is that God will deal with sin.

  35. And as we look at this passage, what we are going to see is that God will deal with nations.

  36. He will deal with individuals.

  37. Sin will not go unpunished.

  38. And we do well to allow God to be the one that takes revenge rather than to set ourselves up as the judge and jury instead of trusting Him.

  39. For another thing, what we are going to see in this passage is that a loving God does keep His promises.

  40. He does His work in those He calls.

  41. And you may be sitting here this morning as someone who has actually come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  42. but you have drifted away.

  43. You have become indifferent to the blessing of your salvation.

  44. And let me tell you something.

  45. If you are a child of God, you will not stay comfortable in that disobedient place you are presently.

  46. Here's what it says in Hebrews.

  47. Whom the Lord loves, the Lord disciplines or chastens.

  48. And His purpose in doing that is to bring you back to Him to display His love and to bring about godliness and holiness in your life.

  49. And so in terms of the big picture, what we're going to be looking at this morning is that God does deal with sin.

  50. And I've got to tell you this.

  51. I would rather be the one that God is disciplining than be the one that God is using to do the discipline.

  52. If it's to be thought of, I would rather actually be the one who learns from watching God deal with other people in discipline

  53. rather than be the one that God has to discipline.

  54. How many of you follow that?

  55. Listen carefully.

  56. A fool doesn't learn even from repeated strokes.

  57. I remember dealing with an individual once in a car with me.

  58. We were driving somewhere.

  59. I'd pick the guy up.

  60. I wouldn't volunteer that this is what you should do.

  61. But I picked him up on the side of the road.

  62. And I was taking him somewhere, just helping him out in the rain and all that kind of stuff.

  63. And we got to talking.

  64. He was talking about how messy his life was.

  65. And so I asked him a question.

  66. I said, do you need any more evidence of how hard your life is in the path that you are on?

  67. That's a practical question, isn't it?

  68. The individual said no.

  69. I said, then what would keep you from making a change and repenting and turning towards Christ?

  70. Later on, several days later, the individual called me and needed help.

  71. And we were in the flow of things again.

  72. And I said, hey, do you need any more experience to teach you that the path you're on is not a good one?

  73. No.

  74. Guess what I said next?

  75. Well, would it be wise, knowing what you do about what sin produces in your life to change direction?

  76. What we're looking at this morning is a very, very clear passage in which we see that God deals with sin.

  77. And so I want you to look with me here, beginning in Isaiah chapter 9, verse 8.

    Isaiah 9:8

  78. And let me read a portion to you.

  79. Have it locked into your mind.

  80. And then we'll work our way through it.

  81. The Lord has sent a word against Jacob, and it will fall on Israel, and all the people will know.

  82. Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, who say in pride and arrogance of heart,

  83. the bricks have fallen, but we will build with dressed stones.

  84. The sycamores have been cut down, but we will put cedars in their place.

  85. For the Lord has raised the adversaries of resin against him and stirred up his enemies.

  86. The Syrians on the east and the Philistines on the west devour Israel with an open mouth.

  87. What we're looking at here is sober warning to Israel.

  88. And I want you to understand that this warning is different than the prophetic cautions

  89. and the prophetic words of appeal that had come earlier.

  90. When Isaiah speaks in this case, he is letting them know that God has come to the place

  91. that he is not going to let Israel go any longer, and he is going to deal with them very, very firmly.

  92. The fact that it says this is a word is different than, well, these are words.

  93. This is God saying, I'm done.

  94. I'm going to deal with you, and there's going to be no turning back.

  95. And what we find here is that God is giving through the prophet a word of judgment

  96. that is going to come on the nation.

  97. And I want you to recognize that Isaiah, remember earlier when we were looking in Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  98. we understood that Isaiah was given this very sober responsibility of communicating the judgment of God

  99. against a very hard-hearted people.

  100. They didn't care in the least what God thought.

  101. And here comes the prophet and says, let me tell you, God is going to deal with you.

  102. So as you work your way through this passage with me,

  103. I want you to recognize here in Isaiah chapter 9, beginning there in verse 8

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  104. and carrying on down to Isaiah chapter 10, verse 2,

    Isaiah 10:2

  105. we're going to see four different indicators of what God was really troubled and offended by

  106. in the nation of Israel and what he was going to deal with.

  107. For one, Isaiah had this sinful self-reliance.

  108. You look there in verse 9 and 10, and here is a people who say,

  109. well, okay, you're going to knock down the bricks, but guess what we're going to do?

  110. We're going to build up with cut stone.

  111. And cut stone referred to stones that had been carefully manufactured and put together,

  112. and they were much harder and larger.

  113. And when you built with cut stone, it was something that would last much longer than bricks.

  114. Furthermore, they made the statement, not only we're going to build with cut stone,

  115. but okay, you're going to knock down the sycamore, but we're going to build with cedar.

  116. And that was an incredibly expensive wood.

  117. It's a little bit like in our day saying, okay, okay, we built this with pine,

  118. but we're now going to build it with solid oak.

  119. It's going to be so much stronger.

  120. All right, so you knocked it down, but we're going to do it right,

  121. and we're going to put it together.

  122. And here are these people full of themselves saying, you know,

  123. we're not the least bit bothered by the hardship you bring to us.

  124. We'll straighten it out.

  125. We'll do it our way.

  126. We also see there in verse 14 and 15 a very sinful trust in flawed and frail leadership.

  127. So the Lord cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed.

  128. In one day, the elder and honored man is the head,

  129. and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail.

  130. You know what one of the problems was in Israel?

  131. They had people who were in positions of leadership, even in the priesthood,

  132. that really had completely compromised the Word of God

  133. and had no interest in making the Word clear.

  134. They were interested only in appealing to the hearts of men

  135. rather than being obedient to Christ, obedient to the Word.

  136. And so here were people who, when they stood up to preach,

  137. when they stood up to speak, when they gave direction,

  138. they were primarily interested, and so what are people looking for?

  139. I'll give that.

  140. I'll give that.

  141. And I want you to understand that here is God saying,

  142. these dishonest individuals are going to be cut off.

  143. And mark what it says here, verse 16,

  144. for those who guide this people have been leading them astray,

  145. and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.

  146. Do you recognize what's happening?

  147. God is letting the nation know that those who they had been listening to

  148. in all of that falsehood that had been propagated in that day,

  149. it was going to come to heartache and destruction

  150. in the lives of those who were listening to them.

  151. Like prophet, like the people, like the priest, like the people,

  152. and this connection, flawed in its understanding,

  153. frail in its disobedient heart was going to end up causing heartache in abundance.

  154. As a side note, let me encourage you to know this,

  155. that I would encourage you to never trust in the word of a pastor,

  156. to never trust in the word of an evangelist,

  157. to never trust in any word that is not directly connected to the word of God.

  158. Does that make sense?

  159. It is the word of God that is settled and lasts forever,

  160. and at the end of the day, you should be able to track what I say back to the passage itself,

  161. and that is something that will protect you in the days to come.

  162. We live in a day and age where all kinds of people propose

  163. that they have something to say of significance,

  164. and it's legitimate to ask ourselves,

  165. well, where does their significance come from?

  166. Later in Isaiah, it makes it clear,

  167. unto the law and to the testimonies,

  168. if they speak not according to this,

  169. it's because there's no light in them.

  170. Trust the word, not the person.

  171. I want you to also look, if you will,

  172. at verses 18 through 21,

  173. and we're going to find here that the nation had this sinful, selfish self-interest

  174. that was causing great heartache.

  175. Let me read the passage to you.

  176. For wickedness burns like a fire and consumes briar and thorns.

  177. It kindles the thickets of the forest,

  178. and they roll upward in a column of smoke.

  179. Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts,

  180. the land is scorched,

  181. and the people are like fuel for the fire.

  182. No one spares another.

  183. They slice meat on the right, but are still hungry.

  184. They devour on the left, but are not satisfied.

  185. Each devours the flesh of his own arm.

  186. Isn't that an interesting picture?

  187. Here is God describing what's happening in the nation of Israel,

  188. and without question, what you see is this picture

  189. of an incredibly selfish people

  190. that in their selfishness end up robbing,

  191. harming, lying, cheating one another,

  192. and as a result, they are consuming each other

  193. and actually consuming themselves.

  194. Does that kind of sound a little bit like our day today?

  195. Does that sound like the world we live in?

  196. Everybody interested in their own self-interest

  197. and interested primarily in what they're going to get for themselves.

  198. The other day, I walked in to drop off a little bit of dry cleaning,

  199. and I walked into the dry cleaning store over there on Broad Street,

  200. and I saw this sign that says,

  201. no longer accepting blue jeans over $100.

  202. Now, guys, I do wear blue jeans.

  203. I wash my own.

  204. Well, my wife, my bride, 47 years, she washes them.

  205. But if I can't get them on the Internet

  206. or I can't get them over wherever,

  207. it's like, I don't buy them.

  208. And I looked at that sign.

  209. It was the first time I'd ever crossed my mind

  210. that there were actually blue jeans that cost $100.

  211. I looked at that sign,

  212. and I said to the lady who was writing on my ticket,

  213. I said, are there jeans that cost $100?

  214. She says, oh, yeah.

  215. There are blue jeans that cost, are you waiting?

  216. You're all seated.

  217. I'm standing.

  218. There are blue jeans that cost $1,200.

  219. Hello?

  220. I'll say that slowly so that you don't miss it.

  221. There are blue jeans, denim, you know,

  222. dyed with indigo or whatever else it is,

  223. blue jeans that cost $1,200.

  224. I looked at her.

  225. My jaw dropped.

  226. I said, you are kidding me.

  227. Who buys those kinds of blue jeans?

  228. You know what she said?

  229. She said, the only people that can afford those

  230. in this neighborhood, it's a west side,

  231. are drug dealers.

  232. And that's why we have that sign there.

  233. We're not going to cater.

  234. And we're not going to be cheated.

  235. Because when you have a $1,200 pair of blue jeans

  236. and you bring them in for dry cleaning

  237. and you are a snake to begin with,

  238. it's amazing how easy it is to find a spot

  239. on your blue jeans that then have trashed

  240. your $1,200 blue jeans and guess what happens?

  241. I thought to myself,

  242. the misery that drug dealers cause

  243. in the lives of other people

  244. for the sake of a $1,200 blue jean.

  245. Here in the passage,

  246. God is saying, let me tell you,

  247. that sinful selfishness that is so characteristic

  248. of the people during that day

  249. ends up being a disease

  250. that devours both the people around

  251. and the people that are engaged in it.

  252. And so here we end up seeing in this passage

  253. that the wicked end up consuming one another

  254. in their greed and their selfishness.

  255. You know what?

  256. Sin may get it over on somebody else,

  257. but in the end,

  258. the sinner is the one who's consumed

  259. by their own sin.

  260. They're harmed.

  261. They're consumed.

  262. And here as God speaks

  263. to the nation of Israel,

  264. He says, listen, let me tell you something.

  265. I'm not going to put up with this spirit

  266. that I see in you.

  267. I'm going to deal with it.

  268. We find one other thing

  269. that Isaiah is talking about there

  270. in Isaiah chapter 10, verse 1 and 2.

    Isaiah 10:1

  271. Let me read it.

  272. A sinful government.

  273. Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees

  274. and the writers who keep writing oppression

  275. to turn aside the needy from justice

  276. and to rob the poor of my people of their right

  277. and the widows may be their spoil,

  278. that they may make the fatherless their prey.

  279. It is not Washington

  280. that is the first place

  281. that ungodly government and leadership

  282. has been involved.

  283. And as Isaiah was writing to the nation

  284. or he was prophesying to the nation

  285. there in Israel,

  286. he was saying this,

  287. listen, God's done.

  288. He is going to judge what's going on

  289. and he's had it with this spirit

  290. that is interested in passing legislation

  291. that harms other people

  292. and benefits a certain class

  293. or a certain group of people

  294. and yet for the most part is destructive.

  295. He says, let me tell you something.

  296. The issue of seeking to pass legislation

  297. that benefit those who are pushing

  298. for the legislation and harm the poor,

  299. it's not the way God wants it done.

  300. Incidentally, why has God ordained government?

  301. We find over there in Romans chapter 13,

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  302. for one, it is to bring order,

  303. it is to bring safety,

  304. it is to bring benefit,

  305. and we are to pray for those

  306. who are in government

  307. that those who are in government

  308. would lead in an upright

  309. and righteous way

  310. and bring about peace and equity.

  311. That didn't happen during Isaiah's day

  312. and we find there

  313. that God through his prophet

  314. made it clear

  315. and I am going to deal

  316. with this problem.

  317. I have to tell you

  318. that as I read

  319. through this four-fold indictment

  320. of Israel,

  321. I couldn't help but think

  322. about where we are

  323. here in the United States

  324. of America today.

  325. We are a country

  326. that has a tremendous amount

  327. of self-reliance

  328. to the extreme

  329. of confidence

  330. in our own might

  331. and our own power

  332. and we'll do it ourselves.

  333. We also trust

  334. in flawed and frail leadership.

  335. It was very interesting.

  336. Yesterday,

  337. it was my privilege

  338. to preach

  339. Roger McBrayer's funeral

  340. and one of the things

  341. that you as a congregation

  342. know is that

  343. I always have looked

  344. at weddings and funerals

  345. as a golden opportunity

  346. to make,

  347. guess what clear?

  348. The gospel.

  349. And I had a number

  350. of individuals

  351. come to me and say,

  352. you know,

  353. pastor,

  354. I really appreciate the fact

  355. and I could always tell,

  356. you can tell when you're preaching,

  357. you can tell who really likes

  358. to hear what's being said

  359. and those who really

  360. would prefer being somewhere else.

  361. And here's the difference.

  362. You know,

  363. it's like,

  364. yeah,

  365. and there you go.

  366. So,

  367. I had people say to me,

  368. you know,

  369. I gotta tell you,

  370. the gospel was,

  371. what should you preach

  372. at a funeral?

  373. Does anybody have an idea

  374. besides that?

  375. I mean,

  376. the gospel should be clear.

  377. And here we are,

  378. we're in a day and age

  379. where those who are

  380. in positions of spiritual leadership

  381. have gone out of their way

  382. to accommodate

  383. the passions

  384. of self-centered people

  385. and not bringing the hope

  386. of the message

  387. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  388. I gotta tell you,

  389. when I think about

  390. where we are as a nation

  391. here in the United States,

  392. history has never seen

  393. a nation rise

  394. to this level

  395. of ascendancy

  396. and blessing

  397. faster.

  398. And I'm afraid,

  399. unless there is

  400. genuine revival,

  401. that history

  402. will never record

  403. a more precipitous,

  404. rapid decline.

  405. But that brings me

  406. to another central piece

  407. in this message

  408. about God's judgment.

  409. He is going to,

  410. or he would punish

  411. rebellious Israel,

  412. but he was not going

  413. to let those

  414. that he used

  415. get away

  416. with being his instrument.

  417. So let's look now,

  418. if you will,

  419. at Isaiah chapter 10

    Isaiah 10 chapter mention

  420. and we're gonna kind of

  421. step through a number

  422. of different pieces

  423. of text here.

  424. And I'm going to rely

  425. primarily on

  426. dealing with

  427. the very first one

  428. that we find.

  429. Before we actually

  430. look at this

  431. extended passage,

  432. I want you to turn

  433. back in your Bibles

  434. for a moment

  435. to a text in

  436. Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12:3

  437. verse 3.

  438. Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  439. actually verse 1

  440. through 3.

  441. By the way,

  442. so that you know

  443. where I stand

  444. on this issue,

  445. I believe fully

  446. that God

  447. keeps his promises

  448. and that he will

  449. keep his promise

  450. to the nation

  451. of Israel.

  452. The Abrahamic covenant

  453. he has not abandoned.

  454. And over in

  455. Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12:1–3

  456. verse 1 through 3,

  457. now the Lord

  458. said to Abram,

  459. go from your country

  460. and your kindred

  461. and your father's house

  462. to the land

  463. that I will show you.

  464. And I will make you

  465. a great nation

  466. and I will bless you

  467. and make your name

  468. great so that you

  469. will be a blessing.

  470. And I will bless

  471. those who bless you

  472. and him who dishonors you

  473. I will curse

  474. and in you

  475. all the nations

  476. of the earth

  477. will be blessed.

  478. God made a covenant

  479. with Abraham

  480. and his covenant

  481. still stands.

  482. Those who bless

  483. the children of Abraham

  484. will be blessed

  485. and those who curse

  486. the children of Abraham

  487. will be cursed.

  488. And history is full

  489. of examples

  490. of God dealing

  491. with that fact

  492. and making his promise

  493. clear and true.

  494. Our extended passage

  495. going back to the passage

  496. in Isaiah

  497. covering from Isaiah

    Isaiah 10 chapter mention

  498. chapter 10 to 34

  499. and I want you to know

  500. that next week

  501. pastor's going to preach

  502. the enthusiastic

  503. hope filled message

  504. of hey God does punish

  505. but he also offers mercy.

  506. Right pastor?

  507. That's where we're going

  508. next week.

  509. So he's kind of slicing

  510. in some pieces.

  511. I'm the one.

  512. Is that a bad cop

  513. good cop kind of thing?

  514. I'm the bad guy.

  515. Hey, don't mess with God.

  516. You got that?

  517. Say it to yourself

  518. and you can kind of

  519. pack out and leave.

  520. Don't mess with God.

  521. Next week pastor's going to

  522. God is merciful.

  523. God is merciful.

  524. God is merciful.

  525. Okay.

  526. So here we are

  527. and as we work

  528. our way through

  529. we are going to see

  530. that God will deal

  531. not only with Israel

  532. for their sin against him

  533. but he's also going

  534. to deal with those

  535. that he would use

  536. to chase in Israel.

  537. Assyria, Babylon,

  538. Philistia, Moab,

  539. Cush, Egypt, Tyre, Sidon.

  540. Did you remember all those?

  541. I'll give you a quiz.

  542. No.

  543. Every one of them

  544. that ended up

  545. causing Israel harm

  546. God would punish.

  547. Now let's look

  548. at Isaiah chapter 10

    Isaiah 10:5

  549. verse 5.

  550. Ah, Assyria,

  551. the rod of my anger.

  552. The staff in their hands

  553. is my fury.

  554. What follows

  555. in verse 5

  556. all the way

  557. through 14

  558. is a little window

  559. into the thinking

  560. of the Assyrians

  561. as they saw themselves

  562. in this position

  563. of being the instrument

  564. of God

  565. and they took it to heart

  566. and thought

  567. they were really

  568. full of themselves

  569. and in supreme power.

  570. You look down there

  571. and it says

  572. against a godless nation

  573. verse 6

  574. I send him

  575. and against the people

  576. of my wrath

  577. I command him

  578. to take spoil

  579. and seize plunder

  580. to tread them down

  581. like the mire

  582. of the streets.

  583. but he does not

  584. so intend

  585. and his heart

  586. does not so think

  587. but it is in his heart

  588. to destroy

  589. and to cut off nations

  590. not a few

  591. for he says

  592. here is Assyria

  593. being used by God

  594. to discipline

  595. his own beloved people

  596. and they were entirely blind

  597. to the fact

  598. that God was using them.

  599. They didn't understand

  600. what God was doing.

  601. Furthermore

  602. we understand

  603. from verse 7

  604. that actually

  605. they were being driven

  606. by their desire

  607. for power

  608. and to assert themselves

  609. and they figured out

  610. hey if I can take it

  611. it's mine

  612. and might makes right

  613. and that's exactly

  614. what they did.

  615. In verse 13 and 14

  616. what we find

  617. is that Assyria

  618. is persuaded

  619. that they were able

  620. to do what they were

  621. to other nations

  622. simply because

  623. of their own power

  624. and their own brilliance.

  625. 13

  626. for he says

  627. by the strength

  628. of my hand

  629. Isaiah chapter 10

    Isaiah 10:13

  630. verse 13

  631. by the strength

  632. of my hand

  633. I have done it

  634. and by my wisdom

  635. I have understanding.

  636. Have you ever

  637. bumped into people

  638. that were pretty

  639. full of themselves

  640. and thought

  641. that the reason

  642. they were in

  643. the position

  644. they were in

  645. and asserting

  646. the power

  647. that they had

  648. was really just

  649. because they were

  650. smarter than the rest

  651. of everybody else

  652. and they were

  653. kind of full of themselves.

  654. Here is Assyria

  655. displaying that

  656. kind of attitude

  657. and it's very

  658. interesting because

  659. as you work

  660. your way through

  661. Isaiah chapter 10

    Isaiah 10 chapter mention

  662. one of the things

  663. that you're going

  664. to see is two

  665. different pictures

  666. in what is going

  667. on in the very

  668. same time.

  669. We can see

  670. in this passage

  671. the wicked hearts

  672. of the Assyrians

  673. and the wise

  674. and sovereign heart

  675. of God.

  676. Now is that hard

  677. to put together?

  678. It is.

  679. The wicked hearts

  680. of the Assyrians

  681. are thinking

  682. I am powerful

  683. and I can do

  684. exactly what I want

  685. and nobody's

  686. going to stop me.

  687. Disciplining the

  688. nation of Israel.

  689. And God at the

  690. very same time

  691. is saying

  692. I am using you

  693. but when I'm

  694. finished using you

  695. I am going

  696. to discipline you

  697. for your own

  698. arrogance

  699. and your own

  700. hardness.

  701. Kind of track

  702. with me as we

  703. work our way

  704. through and see this.

  705. In verse 5

  706. God says

  707. woe to Assyria

  708. the rod

  709. of my anger.

  710. Hey

  711. you think

  712. you're in

  713. your position

  714. of authority

  715. and you are

  716. asserting it

  717. for your own

  718. pleasure

  719. and your own

  720. satisfaction

  721. and your own

  722. anger

  723. and God says

  724. hey

  725. back up

  726. I am using

  727. you to accomplish

  728. a purpose

  729. and don't let it

  730. go to your head.

  731. Verse 12

  732. when the Lord

  733. has finished

  734. all his work

  735. on Mount Zion

  736. and on Jerusalem

  737. he will punish

  738. the speech

  739. of the arrogant

  740. heart of the

  741. king of Assyria

  742. and the boastful

  743. look in his eye.

  744. You ever remind

  745. yourself of what

  746. happened in history

  747. particularly to the

  748. nation of Germany

  749. and their hatred

  750. of the Jews

  751. back in the 40s?

  752. God dealt with

  753. that nation

  754. in an unbelievably

  755. harsh way

  756. and I want you

  757. to understand

  758. that he has not

  759. changed his hand

  760. and his way

  761. of dealing

  762. even though

  763. he is incredibly

  764. patient in dealing

  765. with disobedient

  766. and hard-hearted

  767. people

  768. the day comes

  769. when he will do it.

  770. So ask yourself

  771. the question

  772. why is God

  773. so patient

  774. and long-suffering?

  775. Two reasons.

  776. Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 8:11

  777. chapter 8

  778. verse 11

  779. says this

  780. listen

  781. because sentence

  782. for an evil

  783. deed

  784. is not

  785. speedily executed

  786. the heart of man

  787. is fully set

  788. in him

  789. to do it.

  790. What's it saying?

  791. Because God

  792. is patient

  793. he lets your

  794. sin come

  795. right out

  796. in the open

  797. where you can't

  798. argue when he

  799. nails you

  800. and you can't

  801. say well I

  802. didn't really

  803. mean it.

  804. Reminds me

  805. years ago

  806. watching a

  807. little class

  808. where the

  809. teacher stepped

  810. out of the

  811. room

  812. and one of

  813. the boys

  814. who was

  815. kind of

  816. the class

  817. clown

  818. you know

  819. every class

  820. has one

  821. this boy

  822. took it upon

  823. himself

  824. while the

  825. teacher

  826. had stepped

  827. out of the

  828. room

  829. to kind

  830. of

  831. give a

  832. little

  833. display

  834. for the

  835. audience

  836. now the

  837. teacher

  838. knowing the

  839. boy

  840. had stepped

  841. around the

  842. corner

  843. and she

  844. immediately

  845. took a

  846. different

  847. location

  848. and she

  849. watched

  850. this boy

  851. in full

  852. display

  853. as he

  854. pranced

  855. around

  856. at the

  857. front

  858. of the

  859. class

  860. it's

  861. like a

  862. fifth grade

  863. boy

  864. you know

  865. it's

  866. like

  867. full of

  868. all kinds

  869. of energy

  870. and foolishness

  871. and he

  872. had his

  873. back to

  874. the door

  875. wise

  876. decision

  877. and he

  878. was putting

  879. on a show

  880. a little

  881. dance

  882. and move

  883. and all

  884. that kind

  885. of stuff

  886. and the

  887. teacher

  888. kind of

  889. slowly

  890. stepped

  891. back

  892. into the

  893. door

  894. and the

  895. rest of

  896. the class

  897. realized

  898. the teacher

  899. was there

  900. before the

  901. boy

  902. and suddenly

  903. the class

  904. that had

  905. been laughing

  906. at the

  907. boy's

  908. behavior

  909. suddenly

  910. got quiet

  911. but the

  912. boy didn't

  913. read the

  914. signals

  915. because he

  916. was quite

  917. full of

  918. his energy

  919. and he

  920. was taking

  921. advantage

  922. of the

  923. moment

  924. and he

  925. was just

  926. full bore

  927. !

  928. so when the

  929. teacher

  930. finally called

  931. his name

  932. and I

  933. won't

  934. mention

  935. that this

  936. morning

  937. the name

  938. he couldn't

  939. say

  940. I didn't

  941. mean it

  942. God

  943. in his

  944. patience

  945. is letting

  946. some

  947. here today

  948. fully display

  949. the hardness

  950. of their

  951. heart

  952. and when

  953. he brings

  954. judgment

  955. you will

  956. never be

  957. able to

  958. say to

  959. God

  960. you didn't

  961. give me

  962. a chance

  963. in verse

  964. 15 of

  965. Isaiah

    Isaiah 10 chapter mention

  966. chapter 10

  967. it says

  968. this

  969. shall the

  970. axe

  971. boast

  972. over him

  973. who

  974. hews

  975. with it

  976. or the

  977. saw

  978. magnify

  979. itself

  980. against him

  981. who wields

  982. it

  983. God's

  984. point

  985. was this

  986. is that

  987. I am

  988. using

  989. Assyria

  990. as an

  991. instrument

  992. of punishment

  993. in my

  994. hand

  995. against

  996. people

  997. that I

  998. love

  999. but need

  1000. to be

  1001. disciplined

  1002. and when

  1003. that

  1004. instrument

  1005. takes it

  1006. upon

  1007. themselves

  1008. to be

  1009. fully

  1010. invested

  1011. in their

  1012. own

  1013. attitudes

  1014. and their

  1015. own

  1016. arrogance

  1017. the day

  1018. of vengeance

  1019. is coming

  1020. so let me

  1021. say this

  1022. in practical

  1023. terms

  1024. when you

  1025. find yourself

  1026. in a place

  1027. of being

  1028. used by

  1029. God

  1030. to correct

  1031. and admonish

  1032. other people

  1033. let me

  1034. encourage you

  1035. to be very

  1036. very careful

  1037. that you

  1038. do so

  1039. with humility

  1040. you know

  1041. why

  1042. listen up

  1043. God

  1044. hates

  1045. pride

  1046. he also

  1047. hates

  1048. a vengeful

  1049. spirit

  1050. when

  1051. you

  1052. are

  1053. in

  1054. the

  1055. place

  1056. that

  1057. God

  1058. has

  1059. you

  1060. dealing

  1061. with

  1062. another

  1063. person

  1064. your

  1065. heart

  1066. should

  1067. be

  1068. broken

  1069. and

  1070. should

  1071. be

  1072. sympathetic

  1073. even

  1074. when you

  1075. exercise

  1076. the

  1077. responsibility

  1078. that he

  1079. has given

  1080. you

  1081. by the way

  1082. it's also

  1083. a dangerous

  1084. thing

  1085. to be

  1086. in a

  1087. place

  1088. where

  1089. you

  1090. decide

  1091. to be

  1092. one

  1093. who

  1094. gets

  1095. vengeance

  1096. in

  1097. place

  1098. of

  1099. God

  1100. passage

  1101. in

  1102. over

  1103. in

  1104. Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  1105. chapter

  1106. 12

  1107. says

  1108. this

  1109. vengeance

  1110. is

  1111. mine

  1112. I

  1113. will

  1114. repay

  1115. hand

  1116. it

  1117. over

  1118. to

  1119. God

  1120. let

  1121. him

  1122. deal

  1123. with

  1124. it

  1125. now

  1126. there's

  1127. a

  1128. larger

  1129. picture

  1130. that I

  1131. want

  1132. to come

  1133. to

  1134. here

  1135. as I

  1136. close

  1137. off

  1138. and

  1139. I

  1140. want

  1141. to

  1142. put

  1143. it

  1144. this

  1145. way

  1146. there's

  1147. another

  1148. point

  1149. that

  1150. follows

  1151. through

  1152. this

  1153. entire

  1154. passage

  1155. this

  1156. morning

  1157. and

  1158. we've

  1159. looked

  1160. primarily

  1161. at

  1162. Isaiah

    Isaiah 10 chapter mention

  1163. chapter

  1164. 10

  1165. and

  1166. not

  1167. the

  1168. rest

  1169. of

  1170. the

  1171. other

  1172. chapters

  1173. between

  1174. 10

  1175. and

  1176. 34

  1177. and

  1178. mind

  1179. you

  1180. I

  1181. pointed

  1182. !

  1183. different

  1184. countries

  1185. there's

  1186. woe

  1187. woe

  1188. woe

  1189. woe

  1190. because

  1191. God

  1192. would

  1193. use

  1194. various

  1195. ones

  1196. to

  1197. deal

  1198. with

  1199. the

  1200. nation

  1201. of

  1202. Israel

  1203. the

  1204. thing

  1205. that

  1206. we

  1207. find

  1208. is

  1209. that

  1210. God

  1211. willingly

  1212. used

  1213. these

  1214. wicked

  1215. people

  1216. as

  1217. instruments

  1218. of

  1219. judgment

  1220. but

  1221. he

  1222. also

  1223. held

  1224. them

  1225. responsible

  1226. for

  1227. their

  1228. dealing

  1229. with

  1230. the

  1231. nation

  1232. of

  1233. Israel

  1234. so

  1235. that

  1236. kind

  1237. of

  1238. puts

  1239. us

  1240. on

  1241. the

  1242. spot

  1243. of

  1244. coming

  1245. to

  1246. grips

  1247. with

  1248. the

  1249. fact

  1250. that

  1251. God

  1252. is

  1253. sovereign

  1254. and

  1255. man

  1256. is

  1257. responsible

  1258. God

  1259. is

  1260. sovereign

  1261. and

  1262. man

  1263. is

  1264. responsible

  1265. so

  1266. how

  1267. do

  1268. you

  1269. put

  1270. those

  1271. two

  1272. truths

  1273. together

  1274. I'm

  1275. going

  1276. to

  1277. introduce

  1278. you

  1279. to

  1280. a

  1281. theological

  1282. term

  1283. that

  1284. you

  1285. can

  1286. use

  1287. on

  1288. each

  1289. other

  1290. in

  1291. the

  1292. car

  1293. home

  1294. okay

  1295. are

  1296. you

  1297. ready

  1298. antinomy

  1299. antinomy

  1300. I don't

  1301. know if

  1302. I had

  1303. that in

  1304. the

  1305. notes

  1306. or

  1307. not

  1308. but

  1309. it's

  1310. fact

  1311. an

  1312. antinomy

  1313. is

  1314. two

  1315. seemingly

  1316. opposing

  1317. laws

  1318. two

  1319. seemingly

  1320. opposing

  1321. facts

  1322. the

  1323. Bible

  1324. actually

  1325. has a

  1326. number

  1327. of

  1328. different

  1329. antinomies

  1330. that

  1331. are

  1332. hard

  1333. for

  1334. us

  1335. to

  1336. understand

  1337. and

  1338. so

  1339. let me

  1340. have

  1341. you

  1342. kind

  1343. of

  1344. connect

  1345. with

  1346. a

  1347. couple

  1348. of

  1349. them

  1350. that

  1351. you

  1352. probably

  1353. are

  1354. more

  1355. comfortable

  1356. with

  1357. than

  1358. the

  1359. idea

  1360. that

  1361. God

  1362. is

  1363. sovereign

  1364. and

  1365. that

  1366. man

  1367. is

  1368. responsible

  1369. here's

  1370. one

  1371. that

  1372. we

  1373. most

  1374. of

  1375. all

  1376. bought

  1377. into

  1378. that

  1379. is

  1380. the

  1381. fact

  1382. that

  1383. God

  1384. is

  1385. triune

  1386. what

  1387. does

  1388. that

  1389. mean

  1390. how

  1391. many

  1392. remember

  1393. singing

  1394. the

  1395. classical

  1396. little

  1397. piece

  1398. of

  1399. song

  1400. where

  1401. God

  1402. in

  1403. three

  1404. persons

  1405. what

  1406. blessed

  1407. trinity

  1408. we know

  1409. that's a

  1410. theological

  1411. fact

  1412. how easy

  1413. is that

  1414. to put

  1415. together

  1416. anybody

  1417. here

  1418. have it

  1419. down

  1420. no

  1421. well let's

  1422. try another

  1423. one that

  1424. actually took

  1425. the church

  1426. the early

  1427. church

  1428. about 450

  1429. years

  1430. to get

  1431. their head

  1432. around

  1433. do you

  1434. know

  1435. which

  1436. one

  1437. it

  1438. was

  1439. the

  1440. absolute

  1441. humanity

  1442. of

  1443. Christ

  1444. and

  1445. the

  1446. absolute

  1447. deity

  1448. of

  1449. Christ

  1450. do

  1451. those

  1452. two

  1453. pieces

  1454. fit

  1455. together

  1456. I

  1457. remember

  1458. at

  1459. one

  1460. point

  1461. in

  1462. the

  1463. first

  1464. ministry

  1465. that

  1466. I

  1467. was

  1468. in

  1469. one

  1470. of

  1471. the

  1472. senior

  1473. deacons

  1474. explained

  1475. to me

  1476. that

  1477. Jesus

  1478. was

  1479. 50%

  1480. man

  1481. and

  1482. 50%

  1483. God

  1484. and

  1485. I

  1486. was

  1487. at

  1488. that

  1489. point

  1490. like

  1491. about

  1492. 34

  1493. years

  1494. old

  1495. and

  1496. I

  1497. had

  1498. the

  1499. wisdom

  1500. to

  1501. at

  1502. least

  1503. bite

  1504. my

  1505. afterwards

  1506. I

  1507. said

  1508. could

  1509. you

  1510. help

  1511. me

  1512. find

  1513. that

  1514. in

  1515. the

  1516. Bible

  1517. that's

  1518. always

  1519. a good

  1520. question

  1521. to ask

  1522. anybody

  1523. you know

  1524. so

  1525. where is

  1526. that

  1527. in

  1528. the

  1529. Bible

  1530. see

  1531. God

  1532. has

  1533. many

  1534. truths

  1535. that

  1536. are

  1537. hard

  1538. for

  1539. our

  1540. little

  1541. minds

  1542. to

  1543. get

  1544. our

  1545. hands

  1546. entirely

  1547. around

  1548. I

  1549. have

  1550. a

  1551. little

  1552. fluffy

  1553. white

  1554. dog

  1555. that

  1556. actually

  1557. thinks

  1558. She's

  1559. pretty

  1560. smart

  1561. you

  1562. know

  1563. and

  1564. I

  1565. we

  1566. left

  1567. the

  1568. house

  1569. Judith

  1570. is

  1571. away

  1572. quilting

  1573. today

  1574. and

  1575. and

  1576. Faith

  1577. I

  1578. said

  1579. honey

  1580. please

  1581. lock

  1582. your

  1583. door

  1584. Faith

  1585. is

  1586. visiting

  1587. from

  1588. Egypt

  1589. she's

  1590. on

  1591. her

  1592. anybody

  1593. here

  1594. interested

  1595. in being

  1596. a teacher

  1597. in

  1598. Egypt

  1599. just

  1600. let

  1601. Faith

  1602. know

  1603. she's

  1604. ready

  1605. to

  1606. and

  1607. and

  1608. my

  1609. dog

  1610. has

  1611. a

  1612. very

  1613. limited

  1614. vocabulary

  1615. come

  1616. here

  1617. that

  1618. means

  1619. go

  1620. you

  1621. know

  1622. it's

  1623. like

  1624. the

  1625. one

  1626. thing

  1627. she

  1628. understands

  1629. without

  1630. question

  1631. I

  1632. don't

  1633. know

  1634. how

  1635. she's

  1636. got

  1637. it

  1638. figured

  1639. out

  1640. but

  1641. when

  1642. the

  1643. refrigerator

  1644. door

  1645. opens

  1646. she

  1647. thinks

  1648. that's

  1649. dinner

  1650. and

  1651. so

  1652. you

  1653. know

  1654. just

  1655. go

  1656. open

  1657. it

  1658. and

  1659. shut

  1660. it

  1661. again

  1662. Phoebe's

  1663. brain

  1664. could be

  1665. matched up

  1666. in

  1667. comparison

  1668. and

  1669. it's

  1670. a poor

  1671. comparison

  1672. but

  1673. to my

  1674. brain

  1675. in

  1676. relationship

  1677. to

  1678. God

  1679. very

  1680. very

  1681. limited

  1682. in

  1683. my

  1684. compatibility

  1685. to figure

  1686. out

  1687. all

  1688. these

  1689. facts

  1690. but

  1691. here's

  1692. the

  1693. truth

  1694. the

  1695. Bible

  1696. says

  1697. here

  1698. in

  1699. this

  1700. passage

  1701. God

  1702. is

  1703. going

  1704. to

  1705. use

  1706. wicked

  1707. men

  1708. to

  1709. do

  1710. his

  1711. work

  1712. and

  1713. to

  1714. discipline

  1715. a

  1716. hard

  1717. hearted

  1718. nation

  1719. that

  1720. he

  1721. made

  1722. a

  1723. promise

  1724. to

  1725. and

  1726. he

  1727. is

  1728. going

  1729. to

  1730. punish

  1731. that

  1732. nation

  1733. for

  1734. being

  1735. the

  1736. instrument

  1737. that

  1738. he

  1739. chose

  1740. I

  1741. remind

  1742. you

  1743. of

  1744. what

  1745. we

  1746. find

  1747. over

  1748. in

  1749. the

  1750. book

  1751. of

  1752. Acts

  1753. remember

  1754. where

  1755. Peter

  1756. was

  1757. preaching

  1758. the

  1759. sermon

  1760. of

  1761. Pentecost

  1762. and

  1763. he

  1764. said

  1765. you

  1766. did

  1767. exactly

  1768. as

  1769. God

  1770. had

  1771. foreordained

  1772. and

  1773. knew

  1774. was

  1775. going

  1776. to

  1777. happen

  1778. when

  1779. you

  1780. crucified

  1781. the

  1782. Lord

  1783. of

  1784. glory

  1785. according

  1786. to

  1787. the

  1788. plan

  1789. when

  1790. did

  1791. the

  1792. plan

  1793. of

  1794. salvation

  1795. come

  1796. into

  1797. being

  1798. was

  1799. it

  1800. as

  1801. Jesus

  1802. was

  1803. walking

  1804. towards

  1805. the

  1806. cross

  1807. and

  1808. God

  1809. well

  1810. see

  1811. if

  1812. I

  1813. can

  1814. work

  1815. something

  1816. out

  1817. here

  1818. good

  1819. there

  1820. are

  1821. actually

  1822. theologians

  1823. that

  1824. propose

  1825. that

  1826. God

  1827. is

  1828. entirely

  1829. dependent

  1830. upon

  1831. us

  1832. working

  1833. it

  1834. out

  1835. in

  1836. such

  1837. a

  1838. fashion

  1839. and

  1840. well

  1841. he'll

  1842. no

  1843. God

  1844. is

  1845. sovereign

  1846. and

  1847. man

  1848. is

  1849. responsible

  1850. we

  1851. kind

  1852. of

  1853. look

  1854. through

  1855. this

  1856. passage

  1857. in

  1858. Isaiah

    Isaiah 10 chapter mention

  1859. chapter

  1860. 10

  1861. in

  1862. particular

  1863. one

  1864. of the

  1865. things

  1866. that

  1867. I

  1868. want

  1869. you

  1870. to

  1871. understand

  1872. is

  1873. this

  1874. is

  1875. that

  1876. God

  1877. can

  1878. be

  1879. trusted

  1880. to keep

  1881. his

  1882. promises

  1883. promises

  1884. and

  1885. if

  1886. you're

  1887. sitting

  1888. here

  1889. and

  1890. you're

  1891. a

  1892. believer

  1893. who

  1894. has

  1895. trusted

  1896. in

  1897. the

  1898. Lord

  1899. Jesus

  1900. Christ

  1901. for

  1902. your

  1903. salvation

  1904. the

  1905. matter

  1906. is

  1907. settled

  1908. for

  1909. all

  1910. eternity

  1911. your

  1912. salvation

  1913. is

  1914. the

  1915. work

  1916. of

  1917. God

  1918. it's

  1919. not

  1920. you

  1921. interesting

  1922. opportunity

  1923. earlier

  1924. to talk

  1925. with an

  1926. individual

  1927. about

  1928. the

  1929. matter

  1930. of

  1931. salvation

  1932. I

  1933. said

  1934. how

  1935. did

  1936. you

  1937. come

  1938. to

  1939. faith

  1940. !

  1941. well

  1942. he

  1943. saved

  1944. me

  1945. well

  1946. the

  1947. fact

  1948. of the

  1949. matter

  1950. is

  1951. the

  1952. same

  1953. one

  1954. who

  1955. saved

  1956. you

  1957. is

  1958. also

  1959. the

  1960. one

  1961. who

  1962. keeps

  1963. you

  1964. God

  1965. can

  1966. be

  1967. trusted

  1968. to

  1969. keep

  1970. his

  1971. promises

  1972. that

  1973. brings

  1974. me

  1975. to

  1976. one

  1977. other

  1978. point

  1979. that

  1980. I

  1981. want

  1982. to

  1983. settle

  1984. in

  1985. your

  1986. minds

  1987. this

  1988. morning

  1989. and

  1990. I

  1991. don't

  1992. want

  1993. you

  1994. to

  1995. miss

  1996. it

  1997. God

  1998. will

  1999. deal

  2000. with

  2001. sin

  2002. God

  2003. will

  2004. deal

  2005. with

  2006. sin

  2007. we

  2008. have

  2009. a

  2010. tendency

  2011. because

  2012. God

  2013. is

  2014. patient

  2015. to

  2016. think

  2017. that

  2018. he

  2019. is

  2020. indifferent

  2021. to

  2022. sin

  2023. I

  2024. want

  2025. you

  2026. to

  2027. turn

  2028. as

  2029. we

  2030. close

  2031. over

  2032. to

  2033. passage

  2034. in

  2035. Luke

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  2036. chapter

  2037. 13

  2038. during

  2039. the

  2040. time

  2041. that

  2042. Jesus

  2043. was

  2044. on

  2045. the

  2046. earth

  2047. there

  2048. was

  2049. kind

  2050. of

  2051. a

  2052. predominant

  2053. theory

  2054. that

  2055. good

  2056. things

  2057. happen

  2058. to

  2059. good

  2060. people

  2061. and

  2062. bad

  2063. things

  2064. happen

  2065. to

  2066. bad

  2067. people

  2068. do

  2069. you

  2070. got

  2071. that

  2072. one

  2073. good

  2074. things

  2075. happen

  2076. to

  2077. good

  2078. people

  2079. and

  2080. bad

  2081. things

  2082. happen

  2083. to

  2084. bad

  2085. people

  2086. and

  2087. so

  2088. when

  2089. something

  2090. bad

  2091. happened

  2092. it

  2093. was

  2094. fair

  2095. to

  2096. speculate

  2097. well

  2098. they

  2099. must

  2100. have

  2101. been

  2102. doing

  2103. something

  2104. bad

  2105. Luke

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  2106. chapter

  2107. 13

  2108. there

  2109. were

  2110. some

  2111. present

  2112. at

  2113. that

  2114. very

  2115. time

  2116. who

  2117. told

  2118. him

  2119. about

  2120. the

  2121. Galileans

  2122. whose

  2123. blood

  2124. Pilate

  2125. had

  2126. mingled

  2127. with

  2128. their

  2129. sacrifices

  2130. and

  2131. he

  2132. answered

  2133. them

  2134. do

  2135. you

  2136. think

  2137. that

  2138. these

  2139. Galileans

  2140. were

  2141. worse

  2142. sinners

  2143. than

  2144. all

  2145. the

  2146. other

  2147. Galileans

  2148. because

  2149. they

  2150. suffered

  2151. in

  2152. this

  2153. way

  2154. hey

  2155. going

  2156. into

  2157. the

  2158. temple

  2159. to

  2160. sacrifice

  2161. and

  2162. getting

  2163. butchered

  2164. was

  2165. not

  2166. a

  2167. good

  2168. thing

  2169. to

  2170. have

  2171. happen

  2172. to

  2173. you

  2174. right

  2175. and

  2176. Jesus

  2177. says

  2178. are

  2179. you

  2180. sitting

  2181. here

  2182. thinking

  2183. that

  2184. that

  2185. happened

  2186. because

  2187. these

  2188. people

  2189. were

  2190. worse

  2191. than

  2192. others

  2193. look

  2194. at

  2195. the

  2196. next

  2197. one

  2198. no

  2199. I

  2200. tell

  2201. you

  2202. verse

  2203. three

  2204. unless

  2205. you

  2206. repent

  2207. you

  2208. will

  2209. all

  2210. likewise

  2211. perish

  2212. or

  2213. those

  2214. eighteen

  2215. on

  2216. whom

  2217. the

  2218. tower

  2219. of

  2220. Siloam

  2221. fell

  2222. and

  2223. killed

  2224. them

  2225. do

  2226. you

  2227. think

  2228. that

  2229. they

  2230. were

  2231. worse

  2232. offenders

  2233. than

  2234. all

  2235. the

  2236. others

  2237. who

  2238. lived

  2239. in

  2240. Jerusalem

  2241. no

  2242. no

  2243. I

  2244. tell

  2245. you

  2246. unless

  2247. you

  2248. repent

  2249. you

  2250. will

  2251. all

  2252. likewise

  2253. perish

  2254. so

  2255. let

  2256. me

  2257. close

  2258. off

  2259. by

  2260. bringing

  2261. it

  2262. down

  2263. in

  2264. very

  2265. practical

  2266. terms

  2267. I

  2268. would

  2269. appeal

  2270. to

  2271. you

  2272. who

  2273. are

  2274. here

  2275. today

  2276. and

  2277. know

  2278. Christ

  2279. as

  2280. your

  2281. personal

  2282. savior

  2283. that

  2284. you

  2285. not

  2286. take

  2287. sin

  2288. in

  2289. your

  2290. own

  2291. life

  2292. carelessly

  2293. I

  2294. want

  2295. to

  2296. make

  2297. this

  2298. point

  2299. clear

  2300. the

  2301. way

  2302. God

  2303. deals

  2304. the

  2305. way

  2306. God

  2307. deals

  2308. with

  2309. sin

  2310. in

  2311. the

  2312. believer's

  2313. life

  2314. is

  2315. different

  2316. than

  2317. the

  2318. way

  2319. God

  2320. deals

  2321. with

  2322. sin

  2323. in

  2324. the

  2325. unbeliever's

  2326. life

  2327. the

  2328. believer

  2329. can

  2330. be

  2331. assured

  2332. of

  2333. discipline

  2334. and

  2335. chastening

  2336. in

  2337. this

  2338. life

  2339. and

  2340. can

  2341. I

  2342. tell

  2343. you

  2344. something

  2345. I

  2346. can

  2347. tell

  2348. you

  2349. from

  2350. 69

  2351. years

  2352. of

  2353. experience

  2354. God

  2355. is

  2356. not

  2357. someone

  2358. to

  2359. mess

  2360. with

  2361. one

  2362. of

  2363. the

  2364. advantages

  2365. of

  2366. being

  2367. as

  2368. old

  2369. as

  2370. I

  2371. am

  2372. is

  2373. I

  2374. have

  2375. plenty

  2376. of

  2377. scar

  2378. tissue

  2379. and

  2380. every

  2381. now

  2382. and

  2383. then

  2384. when

  2385. I

  2386. go

  2387. on

  2388. one

  2389. of

  2390. my

  2391. stubborn

  2392. stupid

  2393. streaks

  2394. he

  2395. kind

  2396. of taps

  2397. not

  2398. going

  2399. there

  2400. again

  2401. how many

  2402. of you

  2403. are

  2404. with

  2405. me

  2406. I

  2407. don't

  2408. need

  2409. another

  2410. round

  2411. I'm

  2412. convinced

  2413. God

  2414. deals

  2415. with

  2416. believers

  2417. as it

  2418. says

  2419. in

  2420. Hebrews

  2421. he

  2422. chastens

  2423. whom

  2424. he

  2425. loves

  2426. that

  2427. we

  2428. may

  2429. be

  2430. partakers

  2431. of

  2432. his

  2433. holiness

  2434. isn't

  2435. that

  2436. an

  2437. encouraging

  2438. fact

  2439. when

  2440. he

  2441. puts

  2442. the

  2443. heat

  2444. on

  2445. Tim

  2446. Kenoyer

  2447. his

  2448. goal

  2449. is

  2450. my

  2451. progressive

  2452. sanctification

  2453. I

  2454. like

  2455. that

2456. I just as soon not have to have the heat.

2457. When God deals with sinners,

2458. in this life, for the most part,

2459. his intent is to draw you to the cross.

2460. It goes back to that boy that I had in the car with me.

2461. And after he'd shared part of his life with me,

2462. I said, so how much more evidence do you need

2463. that a disobedient and sinful life doesn't work out well?

2464. Is that a fair question?

2465. And there's some of you here this morning,

2466. as one who has been appointed by the Lord Jesus Christ

2467. to plead with you for the sake of the gospel.

  2468. Be practical.

  2469. Be realistic.

2470. I'm reminded of what a man named Harold Platinga said.

2471. He said, sin, hold on to this,

2472. sin is an opportunistic virus that always destroys its host.

2473. Sin is an opportunistic virus that always destroys its host.

2474. And if you sit here this morning with a stubborn and hard heart towards God,

2475. and you are resistant to the sweetness of the offer of salvation

2476. through the Lord Jesus Christ,

2477. it will only get harder

2478. until the day comes that you have no opportunity

2479. because you have died in your sins

2480. and lost the hope in the Lord Jesus Christ.

2481. And so it is fitting,

  2482. it is fitting,

2483. for one who tells you about the fact that God judges sin

2484. to also tell you that God sent His Son,

  2485. the Lord Jesus Christ,

2486. to take the full burden for our wicked, dark hearts

2487. and to pay for that on the cross

2488. that whosoever believes in Him might

  2489. not perish,

  2490. but have everlasting life.

2491. And I would plead with you this morning,

2492. do not delay in trusting Him.

  2493. Let's close in prayer.

  2494. Our Father God,

  2495. Your Word is clear.

2496. You are a God who is holy and just

2497. and will not overlook sin.

  2498. You will punish it.

2499. We thank You that You have sent the Lord Jesus Christ

2500. as full payment for our sins,

2501. and whosoever believes in Him

  2502. shall not perish,

  2503. but have everlasting life.

2504. And my plea this morning

2505. is that Your Spirit would bring people to the cross.

2506. Not because they simply have made an excellent decision,

2507. but because this morning the Spirit of God

  2508. is convicting them

2509. and breaking through the hardness of their heart

2510. and bringing them to the point of seeing

2511. there is no hope apart from Christ.

2512. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  2513. Amen.

  2514. Amen.

  2515. Amen.
