  1. I would like you to turn in your Bibles this morning to the passage that will frame, at least start our study.

  2. ! And after we look at this passage just for a moment, we're going to go to the Isaiah text that will dominate the remainder of our time together.

  3. Turn in your Bibles, if you would, to Luke chapter 24. Luke chapter 24.

Luke 24 chapter mention Luke 24 chapter mention

  4. Beginning there in verse 13, let me read the passage to you. You follow along in your own copy, if you would, please.

  5. That very day, verse 13, two of them were going to the village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.

  6. And they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.

  7. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

  8. And he said to them, what is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?

  9. And they stood still, looking sad.

  10. Then one of them named Cleopas answered him, are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened here these days?

  11. And he said to them, what things?

  12. And they said to him, concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet, mighty indeed, and word before God and all the people.

  13. And how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and crucified him.

  14. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.

  15. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

  16. Moreover, some women in our company amazed us.

  17. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.

  18. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the woman had said, but him they did not see.

  19. And he said to them, O foolish ones and slow of heart, not to believe all the prophets have spoken.

  20. Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?

  21. And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them all the scriptures, the things concerning himself.

  22. I want you to turn over to Isaiah chapter 49.

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  23. I wasn't on the road to Emmaus, nor were you.

  24. But the scriptures tell us that what Jesus did when these dear men were disconsolate and discouraged in the face of the problem of the day,

  25. he reminded them of what God had already promised and done and its relationship to our salvation.

  26. I want to remind you as we get into this passage this morning of another passage that is the very, very start to the gospel truth.

  27. And you go back in your thinking, if you would, to Genesis chapter 3, verse 15.

    Genesis 3:15

  28. Remember after the fall, and you can imagine how dark a day that must have been for Adam and Eve

  29. as they realized that they had sinned against the infinite holy glory of God

  30. and they had caused this breach in their relationship and communion.

  31. God had told them up front and in advance, if you do this, you're going to die.

  32. And after they had eaten the fruit, they hid and heard his voice

  33. and must have labored deeply in their soul as they considered what was next.

  34. God comes to them and he speaks to them these words.

  35. He starts out early and he says this, speaking to the serpent,

  36. he lets the serpent know the consequences of being involved in all of this.

  37. And then he says to the serpent, he says,

  38. He will bruise your head and you will bruise his heel.

  39. That is the start of the story that finds us this morning considering this passage in Isaiah chapter 49

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  40. in which the reality of our Savior and his coming in the flesh to be our substitute

  41. and sacrifice for our sins is played out for us.

  42. Let me read the passage to you there in Isaiah chapter 49 verse 1.

    Isaiah 49:1

  43. It says,

  44. We're looking here, first of all, at the servant that is called,

  45. Lord Jesus Christ.

  46. It speaks of him here and lets us know that right at the very beginning,

  47. God makes it clear that he is the one that is calling his son to become our Savior

  48. and bringing him into the world to be exactly that.

  49. I appreciate the fact that here in the text it says,

  50. Listen to me.

  51. We've all heard those words, haven't we?

  52. On more than one occasion when our parents are trying to give us clear instruction

  53. and we're maybe not paying attention,

  54. I know that one of the things that worked for us,

  55. and I've watched other parents do it as well,

  56. say,

  57. Look in my eyes.

  58. Have you ever done that?

  59. Look in my eyes.

  60. You know that if the kid is not looking,

  61. probably not paying attention.

  62. And here is the Holy Spirit saying to the nation of Israel,

  63. Listen, this is important.

  64. You better pick up on this.

  65. And it's particularly appropriate when you stop and think about the background

  66. to which this verse sets or behind what is behind this passage.

  67. Go back just one verse, if you will, to Isaiah chapter 48 and look at verse 22.

    Isaiah 48 chapter mention

  68. Look at that passage.

  69. There is no peace, says the Lord, for the wicked.

  70. There is no peace, says the Lord, for the wicked.

  71. You want to live a disobedient, ungodly, wicked life.

  72. Mark this verse as an absolute certain prophecy as how things will play out.

  73. There is no peace for the wicked.

  74. Against that backdrop, we find the Holy Spirit says to Isaiah,

  75. Write these words.

  76. Listen to me, O coastlands,

  77. And give attention, you peoples afar.

  78. It's kind of an announcement that God has something to say.

  79. And one of the things I appreciate is our God tells us in advance what He's going to do.

  80. You can't do that, can you?

  81. How many of you would say,

  82. Well, I'm going to do this after the service is over.

  83. And the truth of the matter is, you can't say that.

  84. Now, you could say it this way,

  85. If the Lord wills.

  86. How many of you do that?

  87. I'm going to go have lunch at,

  88. Well, if the Lord wills.

  89. Only God, sovereign and absolute power,

  90. Can say with absolute certainty,

  91. This is what is going to happen.

  92. And so here is God telling us,

  93. I'm going to be doing something,

  94. And you need to pay attention to this,

  95. Because it is something that is going to be a declaration of my power and authority,

  96. And my ability to save.

  97. I want you to think with me as well about the fact that not only can God tell us what's going to happen in the future,

  98. But it sets Him so far apart from what the rest of the world is like,

  99. And what idolatry is like.

  100. Go back just for a moment.

  101. You're there in Isaiah 49,

  102. But go back to Isaiah chapter 48,

    Isaiah 48:3–5

  103. Verse 3 through 5.

  104. This is one of several different places in the book of Isaiah,

  105. And you will find other places similar in the scriptures,

  106. Where God sets Himself apart from idolatry,

  107. From idols,

  108. By letting people know that He is the only one who can tell us in advance what's going to happen.

  109. Look at verse 3.

  110. Isn't that interesting?

  111. God telling His people,

  112. Before it ever happened,

  113. This is exactly how it's going to play out.

  114. Give you an illustration of that.

  115. Remember when God predicted to Abraham

  116. That His offspring was going to spend time in Egypt,

  117. And eventually come out and come into the promised land?

  118. And sure enough,

  119. When did it happen?

  120. Exactly on the time that God had stipulated that it would.

  121. You remember when Daniel was reading in the scriptures,

  122. And he realized that the time of the captivity had been fulfilled,

  123. And God was going to fulfill His promise.

  124. He had complete confidence that the God who predicted and prophesied what was going to happen

  125. Would bring it about.

  126. Here in Isaiah 48,

  127. He says,

  128. Listen,

  129. I did it and it came to pass.

  130. Because I know that you are obstinate,

  131. And your neck is an iron sinew,

  132. And your forehead brass,

  133. I declared them to you from of old,

  134. Before they came to pass,

  135. I announced them to you,

  136. Lest you should say,

  137. My idol did them,

  138. My carved image,

  139. And my metal image commanded them.

  140. You see,

  141. God tells us ahead of time what He is going to do,

  142. And one of the values of that is that it sets Him apart from every other source of information,

  143. And every other individual.

  144. Only God can tell us how the story ends.

  145. And it's important to remember that.

  146. Coming back now,

  147. As you would,

  148. To the passage in Isaiah chapter 49,

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  149. After we read this statement,

  150. That He called me from my womb,

  151. From the body of my mother,

  152. He named my name,

  153. We find there an indication that

  154. That supports the issue of the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  155. He,

  156. He,

  157. God,

  158. Second person of the Trinity,

  159. Came here and became entirely flesh.

  160. He became a man,

  161. And He became a man so that He could die in our place for our sins.

  162. Now I want you to understand this.

  163. I want everybody here to pick up on this and track it.

  164. Sin produces consequence.

  165. Do you understand that?

  166. It says in Scripture,

  167. The soul that sins shall die.

  168. There is a penalty for sin.

  169. There are some of you sitting here this morning that are thinking to yourself,

  170. Well, I am getting away with what I'm doing.

  171. It's quite all right.

  172. Let me tell you,

  173. Don't mistake the patience of God for indifference to sin.

  174. God deals with sin.

  175. And the fact of the matter is that every single one of us will have to satisfy the debt that our sin has created,

  176. Either by trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ as the substitution for our sin,

  177. Or by spending eternity in hell,

  178. Suffering the consequence of our rebellion against Him.

  179. Do you understand what I'm saying?

  180. Jesus came in the flesh to be the substitute and to die in your place.

  181. He satisfied the wrath of God against your sin.

  182. And as we read here in Isaiah chapter 49, it says,

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  183. The Lord called me from the womb, from the body of my mother.

  184. He named my name.

  185. God appointed the Lord Jesus to be our Savior from eternity past.

  186. And Isaiah indicates the reality of Christ's coming in the flesh to be our substitute.

  187. Incidentally, on Easter,

  188. Pastor Shearer, Pastor Andrew,

  189. I'm trying to make an adjustment, Pastor.

  190. You should have started out with that.

  191. Well, we had so many Andrews around here.

  192. It was tough.

  193. I understand.

  194. It's Pastor Andrew in the future.

  195. Tim, remember that, please.

  196. Okay.

  197. Pastor Andrew is going to preach on Isaiah 53,

  198. And it's going to be a wonderful passage in which we see the Lord Jesus suffering for us.

  199. Just phenomenal.

  200. Here is Isaiah making it clear

  201. Let me bring up another part that I want you to look at here.

  202. God would bring salvation through the birth of our Savior.

  203. It's important to see it there.

  204. God would do that.

  205. The promise in Genesis.

  206. The promise in Isaiah 9.

  207. The promise fulfilled with the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  208. And the promise brought to full fruition in the work of Christ on the cross.

  209. Jesus, our Savior, by virtue of dying in our place and satisfying the debt of our sin.

  210. Now, I want you to look, if you will, also at what it says there in verse 2.

  211. He made my mouth like a sharp sword.

  212. In the shadow of his hand he hid me.

  213. He made me a polished arrow.

  214. In his quiver he hid me away.

  215. Question.

  216. What's that talking about?

  217. The picture that we generally have of Jesus is pretty soft and cuddly, right?

  218. Pretty nice.

  219. I mean, he's wonderful.

  220. And he is.

  221. So what is all this about?

  222. What is a sword for?

  223. It's not for paring your fingernails.

  224. What is an arrow for?

  225. It's not for decoration on a wall.

  226. An arrow and a sword are means of death.

  227. And here is the Holy Spirit saying to us in relationship to Christ and his coming,

  228. He made my mouth like a sharp sword.

  229. How will the words of Christ be a sharp sword?

  230. For one thing, we know that they were sharp,

  231. particularly during his earthly time here when he was dealing with sinners,

  232. the Pharisees, etc., and bringing rebuke and bringing indictment against their hardened hearts.

  233. But I want you to think a little bit further with me of what this issue of the sharpness of his word

  234. has to do with salvation and with judgment.

  235. Think with me just for a moment what it says over in Hebrews 4, verse 12.

    Hebrews 4:12

  236. For the word of God...

  237. Can anybody finish it off for me?

  238. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword,

  239. piercing to the division of soul and spirit,

  240. of joints and of marrow,

  241. and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  242. One of the things that I have found over and over again as the most effective means of ministry

  243. is the authority and the supremacy of the word of God.

  244. It is the thing the Holy Spirit uses to convict us of the darkness and the hardness of our heart.

  245. And here, early in this exposure of the reality of our Lord Jesus Christ coming to be the Savior of the world,

  246. we are told that He also will be the sword and the arrow.

  247. Now, why is it hidden?

  248. Hidden in this sense that it's not fully revealed,

  249. but the day is coming when it will be fully revealed.

  250. And when will that be?

  251. I want you to turn in your Bible just for a moment over to Revelation chapter 19.

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  252. Revelation chapter 19,

    Revelation 19:15

  253. verse 15 and 21.

  254. From His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations,

  255. and He will rule them with a rod of iron.

  256. Verse 21.

  257. And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against Him,

  258. who is sitting on the horse and against His army.

  259. And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet,

  260. who in its presence had done the signs by which He deceived those who had received the mark of the beast

  261. and those who worshipped His image.

  262. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur,

  263. and the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of Him who is sitting on the horse.

  264. Think about how the story ends.

  265. We live in a messy, broken, hard, sinful world,

  266. and yet we revel in the fact that our Savior,

  267. who is the one who has shown mercy and grace to us,

  268. will someday deal with the rebel and with the disobedient,

  269. and He is going to punish them with absolute certainty.

  270. And here in Isaiah, we understand that He will have a sword and an arrow.

  271. I want you to turn now, and we're just going to take a quick look at this portion,

  272. but I want you to recognize in verses 13 through 26 that what we find here,

  273. beginning there in verse 13,

  274. A general rule of Bible understanding is paying attention to context.

  275. Now, why do I say that?

  276. Because the people who are being spoken to have bearing on the message that is being heard.

  277. Third, simplest illustration would be when there are four or five young people standing around,

  278. and you hear someone say,

  279. Come here.

  280. Everybody looks around to see,

  281. Well, who are you talking to?

  282. When you see the parent standing over there saying,

  283. Come here,

  284. who do you think the parent is talking to?

  285. The child that they have birthed and have authority on.

  286. Hey, come here.

  287. And so context is important.

  288. And we look at this passage,

  289. and here in the following statements,

  290. we are going to find God makes it clear that He is going to keep His promise

  291. to the nation of Israel.

  292. But Zion said,

  293. The Lord has forsaken me.

  294. My Lord has forgotten me.

  295. Can you imagine Zion saying that?

  296. Struggling as they were,

  297. burdened down with sin,

  298. enduring the chastisement of God,

  299. and kind of thinking,

  300. Well, God really doesn't care.

  301. No, no, no.

  302. He hasn't broken His covenant

  303. or His promises with the nation of Israel.

  304. And when we look at this,

  305. I want you to understand

  306. that it assures us that He will keep His promises with us.

  307. One of the reasons that Tim Knoyer

  308. has great confidence

  309. that when he dies,

  310. he is going to go from this place

  311. to that place

  312. is because God keeps His promises.

  313. How do I know He's done it?

  314. But I see what He's doing,

  315. what He has done,

  316. and what He's doing with the nation of Israel,

  317. and I have confidence

  318. that if He keeps promises with them,

  319. He's keeping promises with me.

  320. And I rest in that.

  321. Now, I want you to look at Isaiah 50, verse 4.

    Isaiah 50:4

  322. I've skipped over down,

  323. all the way down to 26 there,

  324. if you follow along with me.

  325. But I want you to look in particular

  326. at Isaiah 50, verse 4.

    Isaiah 50:4

  327. The Lord has given me

  328. the tongue of those who are taught

  329. that I may know how to sustain with a word

  330. him who is weary.

  331. Morning by morning,

  332. He awakens,

  333. He awakens my ear

  334. to hear as those who are taught.

  335. What we find in this passage

  336. is the preparation.

  337. We saw, first of all,

  338. the call of Christ.

  339. Now we see the preparation of Christ.

  340. I want you to think with me

  341. just for a moment.

  342. Remember when Jesus was a little boy,

  343. what was it, 12 years old,

  344. and He was in the temple

  345. and He was teaching.

  346. How did that go?

  347. How did it go?

  348. How did it go?

  349. Any of you young people here, 12?

  350. I need a 12-year-old

  351. to just raise their hand.

  352. Titus!

  353. It's a Titus!

  354. Jeffrey, how old are you?

  355. Ah, you're close.

  356. Molly?

  357. I was thinking that.

  358. And you're just sitting there

  359. trying to hide behind Grandma

  360. and you're just not getting there, okay?

  361. Would you do me a favor, Titus?

  362. Would you please stand just for a second, please?

  363. Please, thank you.

  364. Thank you.

  365. Molly, if I'm going to do it to Titus,

  366. thank you, please, please, please.

  367. Okay, turn around, face the crowd.

  368. Okay, thank you.

  369. I want you to imagine a 12-year-old...

  370. Have a seat.

  371. I want you to imagine a 12-year-old

  372. disputing with the Supreme Court.

  373. Do you follow that?

  374. You're into that, right?

  375. Okay.

  376. Molly and Titus, well chosen.

  377. I didn't realize this would happen this way,

  378. but, you know, hey, here is Jesus

  379. having a discussion with the scribes and Pharisees

  380. and how does that go?

  381. They're amazed.

  382. They're blown away.

  383. Well, he just had this natural ability

  384. to know Scriptures.

  385. What he did have was the full measure of the Holy Spirit

  386. and time that he spent incessantly in the Word of God.

  387. That is a great comfort to me

  388. because what it tells me is I can learn the Scriptures

  389. with the enabling of the Holy Spirit

  390. in a similar fashion to Christ.

  391. You look at this passage and it says,

  392. The Lord has given me the tongue of those who are taught.

  393. It's better to be taught before you say anything.

  394. Would you agree with that?

  395. How many of you have spoken before you've been taught?

  396. I have been taught on many occasions

  397. and the more I'm taught, the less I wish I would say.

  398. Here it says,

  399. The Lord has given me the tongue of those who are taught

  400. that I may know how to sustain with the Word

  401. him who is weary.

  402. What was the purpose that we find here in this passage

  403. to the teaching that Jesus received?

  404. It was so that he would be more effective

  405. in ministering to brokenhearted and grieving people.

  406. I want you to imagine with me just for a moment

  407. what it must have been like to be Jesus.

  408. Having devotions in the morning,

  409. getting up fairly early,

  410. in the quiet of the morning,

  411. just beginning to read the Scriptures.

  412. And by the way, did he have the New Testament?

  413. What's the answer?

  414. Nope.

  415. He had the Old Testament.

  416. He had the Pentateuch.

  417. He had the prophets.

  418. He had the Psalms.

  419. And as he's reading in these things,

  420. just imagine what it must have been like for him

  421. as he's reading his way through

  422. to get into the book of Isaiah

  423. and begin thinking,

  424. Whoa, that gives me cold chills

  425. to think what he must have felt like, right?

  426. Whoa, this is me.

  427. Not me.

  428. But Jesus discovering the reality

  429. of the divine plan of God in the flesh.

  430. He learned from day to day.

  431. And he learned for the sake of other people.

  432. Let me encourage you to think with me

  433. just for a moment here

  434. that this text tells us the purpose

  435. of God's gifting to Jesus.

  436. Why did Jesus receive the word here in this passage?

  437. So that I may know to sustain with a word

  438. him who is weary.

  439. That I will know how to answer

  440. the brokenhearted and the grieved of spirit,

  441. the one who is burdened,

  442. that I will know the right things to say.

  443. In Proverbs, it says that

  444. as, I think it's,

  445. as apples of gold in a chalice of silver,

  446. so are the words of the wise.

  447. How many of you have been comforted by people

  448. who say the right thing at the right time?

  449. When your heart is broken

  450. and a person brings to you

  451. the sweetness of the scripture

  452. and lifts your conscience and your heart,

  453. here we find that Jesus learned the word

  454. and that was God's purpose.

  455. But we also find that the text tells us

  456. the process that Jesus went through to get that.

  457. Look what it says.

  458. Morning by morning,

  459. he awakens my ear to hear

  460. as those who are taught.

  461. When are you going to learn the word?

  462. By osmosis.

  463. Osmosis is a very important principle

  464. to hold on to spiritually.

  465. It's the transfer through a membrane

  466. from a place of lesser density

  467. or a greater density

  468. to a lesser density.

  469. Did I get it right?

  470. Someone help me out here.

  471. I think I lost you all on that one.

  472. We'll take biology off the map

  473. as well as math.

  474. Okay.

  475. You don't learn the word

  476. just by sitting around passively

  477. and showing up periodically at church

  478. and kind of,

  479. well, okay.

  480. You know, it's trying to...

  481. No.

  482. Morning by morning,

  483. he opens my ear to hear.

  484. Why?

  485. Does it happen that way?

  486. Because there is a conscious

  487. and deliberate desire

  488. to know what God has to say

  489. for the sake of his glory

  490. and for the good of other people.

  491. So let me ask you a practical question.

  492. If this is a description

  493. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  494. in preparing his heart

  495. for the purpose of ministry to others,

  496. how closely does it match

  497. your daily morning pattern?

  498. Fair question?

  499. How closely does it match

  500. your daily morning pattern?

  501. The blessings that Jesus received

  502. in his daily time in the Word

  503. were actually for others,

  504. to be shared with others.

  505. And I would say that our blessings

  506. that we receive

  507. should be patterned

  508. in the same fashion

  509. to be a blessing to other people.

  510. I'm afraid there are sometimes people

  511. who are Dead Sea saints.

  512. You know what the Dead Sea is?

  513. It's a place where water and minerals

  514. and all that kind of comes in

  515. and just evaporates.

  516. It doesn't do anything.

  517. It doesn't move on.

  518. It's right there it is.

  519. Dead Sea saints are those

  520. who kind of occasionally

  521. sit and soak,

  522. but it never really ends up

  523. helping them to be productive

  524. and serving and a blessing

  525. to other people.

  526. Well, let's come to one other piece

  527. as we look at this passage,

  528. and let's look at a servant

  529. that is committed.

  530. In Isaiah chapter 50,

    Isaiah 50 chapter mention

  531. we'll go to verse 7.

  532. The Lord God helps me.

  533. Therefore, I am not disgraced.

  534. Therefore, I have set my face

  535. like a flint,

  536. and I know that I shall not

  537. be put to shame.

  538. He who vindicates me is near.

  539. Who will contend with me?

  540. Let us stand up together.

  541. Who is my adversary?

  542. Let him come near to me.

  543. Behold, the Lord God helps me,

  544. and who will declare me guilty?

  545. What we find here

  546. in the remainder of this passage

  547. is we find a picture

  548. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  549. dealing with the adversity

  550. that went with the ministry

  551. that he had.

  552. Earlier in verse 6,

  553. it says this,

  554. I gave my back

  555. to those who strike

  556. and my cheeks

  557. to those who pull out the beard.

  558. I hid not my face

  559. from disgrace and spitting.

  560. Can you imagine the picture

  561. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  562. during his judgment

  563. when he was falsely betrayed

  564. and he was falsely accused

  565. and then he was so vilely mistreated?

  566. Described for us there

  567. in verse 6.

  568. And yet in the face

  569. of all that adversity,

  570. how did he handle it?

  571. How did he deal

  572. with the challenge

  573. that he was enduring?

  574. He was committed to his call

  575. and to his purpose

  576. and his mission,

  577. and he was not overwhelmed by it.

  578. I gave my back

  579. to those who strike

  580. and my cheeks

  581. to those who pull out the beard.

  582. I hid not my face

  583. from disgrace and spitting.

  584. And I want you to imagine

  585. with me just for a moment,

  586. here is the Lord Jesus Christ

  587. standing in for you and me

  588. and enduring

  589. the absolute brutality

  590. of what he went through

  591. during that time

  592. of hardship and suffering.

  593. And how did he do it?

  594. What was his attitude?

  595. It says there,

  596. I have set my face

  597. like a flint.

  598. Think about that.

  599. There was not a shadow of turning.

  600. There was not a moment of doubt.

  601. There was not a pause

  602. in Christ's heart

  603. as he marched resolutely

  604. towards Jerusalem

  605. knowing fully

  606. that in Jerusalem

  607. was going to be

  608. his crucifixion,

  609. knowing what was going to happen,

  610. knowing that all those people

  611. that he'd ministered to

  612. were going to turn against him.

  613. Within days of crying out

  614. in adoration

  615. and welcoming him

  616. in,

  617. Hosanna, Hosanna,

  618. they were going to cry,

  619. crucify him,

  620. crucify him.

  621. And every one of those

  622. completely thoughtless

  623. to the ministry

  624. that he had come to accomplish.

  625. And yet,

  626. in the face of all of that,

  627. what we find here

  628. is these reverses

  629. reflect on how Jesus

  630. suffered for us.

  631. And he suffered for us

  632. without any hesitation,

  633. without any backing away from it.

  634. He willingly pursued it

  635. with our salvation in mind.

  636. That's what he was doing.

  637. Now,

  638. if he was willing to do that for us,

  639. does that leave you any reason

  640. to believe that he will hesitate

  641. to do whatever else

  642. needs to be done for you?

  643. What's the answer?

  644. Absolutely not.

  645. If he was willing to suffer

  646. such shame

  647. and such indignity

  648. and such physical hardship

  649. and then the burden of your sin

  650. for your salvation,

  651. he will do all that is needed

  652. to bring you home to glory.

  653. He will take care of the journey

  654. that you have in front of you.

  655. And so I want you to know

  656. that you can trust Jesus

  657. because of his faithfulness

  658. and suffering.

  659. He stood the course for you

  660. and he stood the course for me

  661. and he can be trusted.

  662. Let me come to one other thing

  663. that I held off

  664. in bringing to your attention earlier

  665. and I want you to go back

  666. to Isaiah chapter 49,

    Isaiah 49:5

  667. verse 5 and 6.

  668. Isaiah chapter 49,

    Isaiah 49:5

  669. verse 5 and 6.

  670. I want you to follow along with me

  671. as I read the passage.

  672. And now the Lord says,

  673. he who formed me from the womb

  674. to be a servant,

  675. to bring Jacob back to him

  676. and that Israel might be gathered to him

  677. for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord

  678. and my God has become my strength.

  679. He says,

  680. it is too light a thing

  681. that you should be my servant

  682. to raise up the tribes of Jacob

  683. and to bring back the preserved of Israel.

  684. Do you know what that's saying?

  685. Yes,

  686. the Lord Jesus

  687. and his purposes

  688. include the nation of Israel

  689. and salvation

  690. and all you have to do

  691. is read Romans chapter 9, 10 and 11

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  692. to kind of get a flavor

  693. for how that's going to play out.

  694. But mark what it says

  695. in the last two lines there.

  696. I will make you a light for the nations

  697. that my salvation may reach

  698. to the end of the earth.

  699. Do you know what that's saying?

  700. Go back if you will with me.

  701. He says, verse 6,

  702. it is too light a thing

  703. that you should be my servant

  704. to raise up the tribes of Jacob.

  705. That's easy peasy.

  706. No big thing.

  707. I got it.

  708. Christ,

  709. the Messiah,

  710. a blessing

  711. to raise up the tribes of Jacob

  712. to bring about

  713. blessing to the nation of Israel

  714. to bring about

  715. the fulfillment

  716. of the covenant promises

  717. that God made to the nation.

  718. But,

  719. is that the end of the story?

  720. Is that all that God is going to do?

  721. Not at all.

  722. I will make you a light

  723. for the nations

  724. that my salvation

  725. may reach to the end

  726. of the earth.

  727. That encourages me.

  728. Because,

  729. the Lord Jesus Christ

  730. came into the world

  731. not only to be

  732. a blessing

  733. to the nation of Israel

  734. and to believers

  735. in the land,

  736. but also

  737. to be a blessing

  738. to the uttermost ends

  739. of the earth.

  740. All,

  741. all

  742. open

  743. to the gospel message.

  744. And here is Jesus

  745. being the Savior

  746. of the entire world.

  747. So,

  748. let me ask you

  749. a question.

  750. This morning,

  751. as you think about

  752. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  753. I trust that one of the things

  754. that is clear in your mind

  755. is what He came to do.

  756. My question is this,

  757. if He came to die

  758. for your sins

  759. and He has satisfied

  760. the judgment of God

  761. upon your soul

  762. for your rebellious heart,

  763. the question is,

  764. have you believed in Him

  765. and put your faith

  766. in what He has done for you?

  767. I had a very interesting

  768. conversation

  769. earlier this week

  770. with an individual

  771. regarding the matter

  772. of salvation

  773. and came down to,

  774. well,

  775. so,

  776. what gives you confidence

  777. in where you're going

  778. to spend eternity?

  779. Well,

  780. I really don't know.

  781. I love that statement

  782. because I can then recite

  783. what it says in 1 John,

  784. these things are written,

  785. what?

  786. That you might know.

  787. God's in the business

  788. of making things clear.

  789. Wouldn't you agree with that?

  790. It's not like,

  791. well,

  792. I'm not so sure.

  793. I'm hoping I can make it.

  794. No,

  795. no,

  796. no.

  797. God says,

  798. I have made things clear.

  799. Salvation is through

  800. the finished work of Christ

  801. who came into the world

  802. to pay the debt

  803. for our sins

  804. and offer salvation

  805. to all who believe.

  806. And so,

  807. let me put it to you

  808. very plainly.

  809. If you are here today

  810. and you do not know Christ,

  811. now is the hour,

  812. now is the time

  813. to come to grips

  814. with the darkness

  815. of your heart

  816. and realize

  817. that you will never

  818. be able to save yourself

  819. by your own good works.

  820. That the judgment

  821. of a holy God

  822. will fall upon

  823. the absolute imperfection

  824. and hardness

  825. of your heart

  826. and condemn you

  827. to eternity.

  828. and yet,

  829. God sent His Son

  830. born of a virgin

  831. in the flesh

  832. to die for my sins

  833. and to die for yours

  834. and salvation

  835. can be had

  836. by believing

  837. in what Jesus

  838. did for you

  839. on the cross.

  840. Let's close in prayer.

  841. Our Father God,

  842. we are thankful

  843. that we have

  844. the Scriptures

  845. in hand

  846. and we can read

  847. here in the text

  848. centuries before

  849. the Lord Jesus Christ

  850. came

  851. clear indication

  852. of His birth,

  853. of His preparation

  854. for ministry,

  855. and the resolute spirit

  856. with which He endured

  857. the cross

  858. for our sakes.

  859. This morning,

  860. we who know

  861. the Lord Jesus Christ

  862. rejoice

  863. in that victorious truth

  864. and we know

  865. that the adversity

  866. and the difficulties

  867. we face

  868. in the day

  869. in front of us

  870. are nothing

  871. compared to the glory

  872. to be had

  873. in the life to come.

  874. We're confident

  875. in the victory

  876. that is yours

  877. and the victory

  878. that we enjoy

  879. because of you.

  880. And Father,

  881. we pray also

  882. this morning

  883. for those that are here

  884. that do not know

  885. the Lord Jesus Christ

  886. that this morning

  887. the Spirit

  888. would rest upon

  889. their soul

  890. and bring conviction

  891. to them

  892. and they would be

  893. drawn to repent

  894. and believe

  895. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  896. alone.

  897. And we ask this

  898. in Jesus' name.

  899. Amen.
