  1. Let's pray.

  2. Heavenly Father, this morning we come to you with complete confidence in your character,

  3. ! in your sufficiency, in the word that you've given to us, in the indwelling spirit in the

  4. promises that you have given to us that hold us and strengthen us in the moments of challenge

  5. and darkness.

  6. And I, along with this dear people, trust you and call upon your name to make your word

  7. clear, convicting, strengthening, and Christ-exalting.

  8. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  9. Amen.

  10. Amen.

  11. I'd like you to turn in your Bibles this morning to Isaiah chapter 60.

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  12. By way of explanation, a reminder that the purpose of preaching is rooted in the great responsibility

  13. of making the word of God clear.

  14. Doing so through the power of the Spirit of God for the glory of Christ.

  15. And I read that to you not just to kind of give an introductory statement, but to tell

  16. you right up front what I'm here to do.

  17. My desire is to lift up Jesus and do so clearly that you walk out of here with confidence and

  18. abiding trust in His finished work on the cross.

  19. Saturday.

  20. Saturday.

  21. And I have been making numerous trips to Home Depot.

  22. Some of you know that I'm a permanent remodeler.

  23. When I die, I'm going to the place that's finished and somebody else did the work.

  24. And I got to tell you, I like that idea.

  25. But I am checking out.

  26. One young guy says to me, how are you doing?

  27. You know what I said, right?

  28. Any better than I'd be dead.

  29. Guy got this really quizzical look on his face.

  30. He's like, are you saying that, let me see, are you glad you're not dead?

  31. I said, well, yeah, I was okay.

  32. But I said, that's not what I said.

  33. What I said is, any better than I'd be dead.

  34. That just took it further into the dark.

  35. I mean, what do you mean?

  36. I said, well, the truth of the matter is, is when I die, I'm going to heaven and I'm going

  37. to see Jesus.

  38. And today doesn't compare with that time.

  39. And, you know, the reason I could say that with absolute confidence, do you understand

  40. that?

  41. Real confidence is because the God who is my Lord and Savior, the Lord Jesus, who is my

  42. Redeemer, keeps every one of His promises.

  43. He makes a promise.

  44. Now, by the way, you have to parse the fact that He doesn't make all the promises to the

  45. same people exactly the right.

  46. But when He makes a promise to me, He keeps it.

  47. His unconditional promises, I rest on.

  48. I rest on.

  49. And I have confidence in.

  50. And that's the reason that Saturday when I was speaking to the young man there, I could

  51. say, any better than I'd be dead.

  52. Because when I die and I leave this place, I am going to see the Lord Jesus face to face

  53. and I will delight myself in His presence beyond my present imagination.

  54. And when we come to Isaiah chapter 60, we're looking at a compressed portion of text that tells us about our promise

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  55. keeping God.

  56. I admit that one of the challenges of interpreting the book of Isaiah is dealing with the question of what happens to the nation of Israel

  57. and does God actually keep His promises to Abraham and to the people that He promised the things that we read of so often in the Old Testament.

  58. And so as we step into this passage, I want to kind of bring together, first of all, kind of the overview of the ugly reality of the nation of Israel's difficulties and hardness.

  59. How many of you have ever read through the book of Judges and thought to yourself,

  60. really?

  61. Or just try this.

  62. You've worked your way through the care that God gave to the nation of Israel after He brought them out of the land of Egypt.

  63. Remember how willing they were to obey Him in everything and how enthusiastic they were in following God and just really tender hearts towards God.

  64. Isn't that right?

  65. No.

  66. And you think to yourself, how in the world could God put up with them?

  67. Until you wake up and look at yourself in the mirror and think, I'm really glad.

  68. You know, He was faithful to them.

  69. I can trust Him to be faithful to me.

  70. And Isaiah gives us a reason to have confidence in our promise-keeping God.

  71. Now, I want you to, by way of background, take a look at the point of hope for Israel by turning back just for a moment to Isaiah chapter 59.

    Isaiah 59 chapter mention

  72. You're there in 60.

  73. You don't have to go very far back.

  74. But look at Isaiah 59, verse 20 and 21.

    Isaiah 59:20

  75. Now, stop and think with me just for a moment.

  76. about what we've learned so far in the book of Isaiah, namely in relationship to His prophetic utterances to the land of Israel, to the nation of Israel.

  77. What kind of people populated that land?

  78. A pretty disobedient, hard-headed group.

  79. Isn't that right?

  80. And He had every reason to deal with them.

  81. And eventually, He dealt with them with unbelievable firmness.

  82. And He sent them off into the land of captivity.

  83. And He was very firm in His discipline with them.

  84. But here are promises made.

  85. A Redeemer will come to Zion and to those in Jacob who turned from transgression.

  86. There is something that's going to happen that is supernatural and something that is not earned or deserved.

  87. God's going to do something.

  88. And when you stop and think about it, when you think about the word Redeemer,

  89. you're recognizing that it suggests to us that there's somebody who's in a mess and needs help.

  90. A Redeemer is someone who rescues.

  91. A Redeemer is someone who delivers.

  92. A Redeemer is someone who comes into the picture when all is lost and there's nothing that you can lean upon.

  93. And then the Redeemer arrives.

  94. The value of a Redeemer is not seen when everything is going well and there are no difficulties.

  95. The value of the Redeemer is seen in brokenness and in heartache and in difficulty.

  96. So here, at the cusp of the change between the history of Israel and the promises of God,

  97. we find here that this nation which had drifted away into idolatry

  98. and who had endured the firm judgment of God,

  99. nevertheless is given this promise and this hope that there will be a day

  100. when God will do something spectacular for His people and according to His promise.

  101. So here we have, we know, we know God will not break His promises.

  102. And that's kind of an underlying theme that I want you to hold on to this morning.

  103. And really it's something that when you walk out of here,

  104. if you are here this morning and you are a believer,

  105. one of the things that should be an abiding confidence to you

  106. and an encouragement to your soul is this,

  107. is the one who has redeemed you is going to keep His promises.

  108. He's not going to break them.

  109. I was thinking of illustration of dealing with little kids

  110. and one of the things I have a tendency to do,

  111. putting out my hand and they smack my hand and they smack my hand and they smack.

  112. What do I do eventually?

  113. Pastor Andrew, you've got a good spirit.

  114. I like that.

  115. He's a little bit of a tease.

  116. I can tell that.

  117. He's tamped down because he's going to be a senior pastor in a couple months here.

  118. But, you know, you let him hit it three or four times and then what do you do?

  119. Atticus, you're right.

  120. You pull it away.

  121. Okay.

  122. Ah!

  123. God never does that to us.

  124. Do you understand that?

  125. When He makes a promise, He follows through with it.

  126. He doesn't mess with us ever.

  127. Now, by the way, a little sidebar on that

  128. is that God's promises to His children are that He will get you home.

  129. You like that, don't you?

  130. But a little part of that promise is that He'll get you home

  131. if He has to put the hurt to you to get your attention.

  132. You don't realize that sometimes, but if you're sitting here

  133. and you're a child of God and you drift left of center,

  134. trust me, He'll work to help you.

  135. And so my advice to you, kind of a little note on the side, is don't mess.

  136. Trust His promises and follow His Word.

  137. Walk in obedience and humility and don't mess things up.

  138. And the reason I bring that to you is because Israel had struggled

  139. with obedience and trust, and they brought a lot of heartache

  140. into their lives.

  141. God dropped the hammer on them, and yet here,

  142. He is letting them know that He will redeem them.

  143. It's interesting to notice that this passage, actually,

  144. that I read there in Isaiah chapter 59,

    Isaiah 59 chapter mention

  145. appears elsewhere in the Scriptures.

  146. And so I want you to...we'll be there for a while.

  147. So go ahead and turn to Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  148. Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  149. By the way, when you find a passage being recited in another place in the Bible,

  150. it's an indication that the previous passage has bearing on the argument

  151. or the case that is being presented in the next passage.

  152. And so we're in Romans chapter...did I say 12?

  153. I meant 11.

  154. Romans chapter 11, verse 26 and 27.

    Romans 11:26

  155. Let me read it to you.

  156. And in this way, all Israel will be saved as it is written.

  157. And what you find next is the very passage out of Isaiah chapter 59.

    Isaiah 59 chapter mention

  158. The deliverer will come from Zion.

  159. He will banish ungodliness from Jacob.

  160. And this will be my covenant with them,

  161. that I will take away their sins.

  162. The larger context of the ministry that Isaiah had prophetically.

  163. Now, it is important for us to recognize that when Paul recited this passage from Isaiah,

  164. he had a reason for doing it.

  165. The book of Romans is a book that lays out God's glory in salvation.

  166. And the starting point of helping us realize God's glory in salvation

  167. is the recognition of the absolute darkness and depravity of our hearts.

  168. Do you realize that?

  169. People don't get saved without coming to grips with the darkness of their soul.

  170. And that's one of the reasons that you have the first three chapters of Romans

  171. argue very clearly for the reality of the hardness and darkness of men's souls

  172. so that they can hear also the message of salvation in Christ.

  173. You work your way through the book of Romans,

  174. and after Romans chapter 8, it begins now with this statement,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  175. there is now therefore no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus.

  176. Isn't that right?

  177. Hey, if you're saved, the case is closed.

  178. It's done.

  179. In the court of heaven, you are redeemed for all eternity,

  180. and you can look forward to the day that you're going to see him face to face.

  181. The argument also follows on, and beginning there in Romans chapter 8, verse 28,

    Romans 8:28

  182. it says what?

  183. All things work together.

  184. How many of you are going through things that you're wondering,

  185. is this good?

  186. Is this good?

  187. Yeah.

  188. It says all things work together for good to those that are called according to his purpose

  189. and those that love God or are loved by him.

  190. So here we have this ongoing argument.

  191. God saves us.

  192. He grants us the blessing of peace with him,

  193. and he will never stop loving us.

  194. Why don't you think about that?

  195. Why don't you think about that?

  196. God will never change his mind in relationship to you who have been called by him and loved by him.

  197. That's a pretty neat promise, isn't it?

  198. But when you think about that, the very next thought that you have to ask yourself is,

  199. really?

  200. Paul takes three chapters to prove the unconditional, unchangeable love of God,

  201. and he does so by bringing your attention to the nation of Israel.

  202. What?

  203. You really don't change your mind?

  204. You really continue loving people like them, like me?

  205. Three chapters give us a picture of God's love for the nation of Israel,

  206. and what you find in Romans 9, 10, and 11 is this clear argument

  207. that our confidence in our salvation can rest in the sovereign faithfulness of God to the nation.

  208. Paul takes great pains to show us that though God has dealt with the nation of Israel

  209. and with their rebellious heart incredibly firmly,

  210. nevertheless, he's going to keep his promises and are going to redeem them.

  211. Now, with that in mind,

  212. I want you to next look at a promise that was made to Abraham

  213. that we actually find over in Isaiah being fulfilled,

  214. and in Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  215. I want you to mark the very first promise made in relationship to the nation of Israel.

  216. Now, here, follow me.

  217. Why is it important to track the promises of God?

  218. Why is it?

  219. Because we find ourselves in a regular situation where we wonder,

  220. is God a promise-keeping God?

  221. Is this going to work out well?

  222. Well, every one of us here,

  223. struggling with adversity and hardship and difficulty,

  224. and life is not the way we would like it.

  225. But do we know how the story ends?

  226. I believe we do because of who God is

  227. and because of the promises that he's made.

  228. So in Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  229. I want you to mark the promise that God made to Abraham.

  230. By the way, how did Abraham start out?

  231. Does anybody know?

  232. Hey, listen up.

  233. He was a really neat guy.

  234. He just, he had a heart for God.

  235. He was just all over being spiritual.

  236. Is that the truth?

  237. He was just an ordinary pagan,

  238. and God called him.

  239. And so here, we work our way through the story,

  240. and in Genesis chapter 12, it says,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  241. Now the Lord said to Abraham,

  242. Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house

  243. to the land that I will show you,

  244. and I will make of you a great nation,

  245. and I will bless you and make your name great

  246. so that you will be a blessing.

  247. I will bless those who bless you,

  248. and him who dishonors you I will curse,

  249. and in you all the families of the earth

  250. shall be blessed.

  251. I want you to recognize here in these promises

  252. that is made to Abraham,

  253. they kind of break down into three different parts

  254. that I want you to recognize.

  255. Number one, God promised a land

  256. to the descendants of Abraham.

  257. This promise is explained more completely

  258. in Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  259. We're not going to look at it in detail,

  260. but recognize that in Genesis chapter 15,

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  261. the boundaries of the land

  262. that God said he would give to Abraham

  263. are clearly stipulated.

  264. You can Google it,

  265. and you can check and say,

  266. Hey, what is the land that God promised?

  267. What are the boundaries of that?

  268. And you'll get an idea of it.

  269. Incidentally,

  270. the covenant that God made with Abraham

  271. was not conditional.

  272. It was unconditional.

  273. Let me make a distinction

  274. so you follow along with me here.

  275. A conditional contract or a covenant

  276. is a little bit like the one you make

  277. with your mortgage company.

  278. What's that contract like?

  279. You make a covenant.

  280. Hey, I get to live in this house,

  281. but I have to make monthly payments.

  282. What happens if you stop making monthly payments?

  283. Eventually, they invite you to leave.

  284. And if you don't leave under invitation,

  285. they will help you by moving your stuff out

  286. and setting it on the street

  287. or on the curb.

  288. Got that?

  289. Same thing with a car.

  290. They say,

  291. You can buy that car.

  292. You make X number of dollar monthly payment,

  293. and what happens if you don't make the payment?

  294. I was driving through my neighborhood a little while back,

  295. and I saw this guy working his truck up to the car

  296. that was sitting on the curb.

  297. And I noticed that he was a little nervous about doing it,

  298. and I actually,

  299. being a conversationalist that I am,

  300. I said,

  301. Hey, what are you doing?

  302. He said,

  303. Well, I'm picking up this car.

  304. I said,

  305. Is there something wrong with it?

  306. He says,

  307. No, they just didn't make the payments.

  308. Ah.

  309. That's a conditional covenant.

  310. You keep your part.

  311. I'll keep my part.

  312. An unconditional covenant is one in which

  313. there's no two parties agreeing to everything.

  314. There's one party that says,

  315. I'm going to do this.

  316. Let me give you an illustration of an unconditional covenant.

  317. Here's what I said to my wife.

  318. I'm 48 years ago almost.

  319. Yeah, 48.

  320. I said,

  321. I will love you in sickness and in health

  322. until death do us part.

  323. That's unconditional.

  324. There's no qualifier in it.

  325. I'll love you so long as you love me

  326. and you bring me breakfast in bed and blah, blah, blah.

  327. You know, no.

  328. This is me.

  329. I'm doing it.

  330. And here is God saying to Abraham,

  331. Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  332. I am going to keep my promise to you

  333. and I'm going to give you a land.

  334. Has this promise been met completely?

  335. Not yet.

  336. Number two,

  337. God also promised a nation to Abraham.

  338. Going back there,

  339. verse two,

  340. I will make of you a great nation.

  341. By the way,

  342. Abraham at that point was 75.

  343. Now, I'm not going to get into biology,

  344. but 75 is kind of stretching it

  345. for being a daddy.

  346. And here is God saying to Abraham,

  347. who had been childless for all these years,

  348. many years,

  349. someday you're going to be a great nation.

  350. His answer was,

  351. yeah, right, really?

  352. Where's the start to all of this?

  353. And yet we find that God kept his promise

  354. and made a great nation of Abraham

  355. and his offspring spread all over the world.

  356. Furthermore, God promised that all the nations of the earth

  357. would be blessed through God's blessing to Abraham.

  358. How was that?

  359. How is that?

  360. Well, to help you think it through in broad terms,

  361. you understand that it was through the seed of Abraham

  362. that God brought David

  363. and brought ultimately our Redeemer,

  364. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  365. He came through Abraham's line.

  366. And so here we have,

  367. and I want you to see the picture,

  368. against the backdrop of the ugliness

  369. of the absolute spiritual failure of Israel

  370. God says to his people that he is chastising

  371. and he's disciplining,

  372. I am going to keep my promise.

  373. I remind you,

  374. the promises of God

  375. are cast in particularly neat light

  376. against the backdrop

  377. of some of the hardest moments of our life.

  378. Do you understand that?

  379. I want to say that to you

  380. who are sitting here today

  381. and your life is marked by difficulty

  382. and hardship

  383. and things you didn't choose.

  384. I encourage you to know this.

  385. God's promises are most precious

  386. against the backdrop of the hardship you're in.

  387. And I want to remind you

  388. that if he keeps his promise to the nation of Israel,

  389. he'll keep his promise to you.

  390. So here we are.

  391. God says,

  392. you're going to have a land,

  393. you're going to have children,

  394. and you are going to be a blessing to other people.

  395. And the full range of God's promise to Abraham

  396. is yet to be fulfilled.

  397. But do we believe that God is going to keep his promise?

  398. Absolutely.

  399. And it is because of that

  400. that we kind of step in now

  401. to the broad picture of Isaiah chapter 60,

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  402. and I want you to look at the future blessings

  403. to the nation of Israel.

  404. You look there at Isaiah chapter 60,

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  405. and we're not going to read all through the passage,

  406. but in Isaiah chapter 60,

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  407. beginning there in verse 1 and 2,

  408. it says,

  409. Arise, shine, for your light has come,

  410. and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

  411. I want you to recognize

  412. as you work your way through that,

  413. look at verse 4,

  414. What is God saying to the nation here?

  415. And this is Isaiah making a promise

  416. to a group of people

  417. that are going to suffer great hardship.

  418. He says,

  419. I want you to understand

  420. that the day is coming

  421. that God is going to fulfill his promises to Abraham,

  422. and he's going to bless you.

  423. How?

  424. He is going to gather

  425. the dispersed people

  426. that he drove out

  427. because of the rebellion of their hearts.

  428. He's going to bring them back together again.

  429. God drove them from the land

  430. because of discipline.

  431. He will regather them

  432. as a people

  433. from every corner of the world.

  434. That has happened only in part,

  435. and it will happen in its entirety,

  436. and in doing so,

  437. people are going to look at this and say,

  438. Wow, this is God doing something

  439. unbelievable,

  440. and he's doing it

  441. according to his promise.

  442. Why could I say

  443. to the man in Home Depot,

  444. My end is going to be better

  445. than the present?

  446. It's because I know

  447. God keeps his promises.

  448. And here we are being reminded,

  449. God says,

  450. Listen,

  451. there will be a regathering

  452. of these dispersed people

  453. wherever they've been sent to.

  454. I'll bring them back.

  455. Secondly,

  456. you look there in verse 9.

  457. It says,

  458. For the coastlands shall hope for me,

  459. the ships of Tarshish first,

  460. to bring your children from afar,

  461. their silver and gold with them,

  462. for the name of the Lord your God

  463. and for the Holy One of Israel,

  464. because he has made you beautiful.

  465. There will be a rejoicing

  466. in God's care for his people.

  467. Not only is he going to bring them back,

  468. but there are going to be people

  469. that rejoice together

  470. in the reality that he keeps his promises.

  471. What value is it

  472. that God keeps his promises

  473. to other people?

  474. Do you benefit from that?

  475. Yes.

  476. How do you benefit?

  477. Because you have assurance

  478. that if he did it for them,

  479. he will do it for you.

  480. I think about the song

  481. that we probably don't sing

  482. very often anymore.

  483. It is no secret what God can do,

  484. what he's done for others.

  485. He'll do for you.

  486. And God, keeping his promise

  487. to the nation of Israel,

  488. reminds me that he will also

  489. keep his promise to me.

  490. He is going to fulfill his promises.

  491. He is not going to back away

  492. from bringing blessing to me,

  493. despite the hardness of my heart

  494. and the similarity I have

  495. between my life and pattern

  496. and the life of the nation of Israel.

  497. Furthermore, I want you to recognize

  498. in the passage

  499. that the nation will honor God

  500. by delighting in his work

  501. for his people.

  502. Mark what we find there

  503. in Isaiah chapter 60,

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  504. looking at verse 19 through 21.

  505. Isaiah chapter 16,

  506. verse 19 through 21.

  507. The sun shall be no more,

  508. your light by day,

  509. nor for brightness

  510. shall the moon give you light,

  511. but the Lord will be

  512. your everlasting light

  513. and your God will be your glory.

  514. Your sun shall no more go down,

  515. nor your moon withdraw itself,

  516. for the Lord will be

  517. your everlasting light

  518. and your days of mourning

  519. shall be ended.

  520. Your people shall all be righteous.

  521. They shall possess the land forever,

  522. the branch of my planting,

  523. the work of my hands,

  524. that I might be glorified.

  525. And what will the response

  526. of others be

  527. when they see the hand of God

  528. in the life of his people?

  529. They are going to rejoice.

  530. They're going to mark the success

  531. and the certainty of God

  532. who keeps his promises,

  533. and they're going to find pleasure

  534. and satisfaction in it.

  535. I want you to turn

  536. over to Revelation

  537. and see what the future

  538. is going to be

  539. according to the promises

  540. of Scripture.

  541. Go in your Bible

  542. to Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21:23

  543. verse 23.

  544. verse 23.

  545. verse 23.

  546. Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21:23

  547. verse 23.

  548. There in Isaiah chapter 60,

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  549. we have this assurance

  550. that God will keep

  551. his promises to his people.

  552. In Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  553. we find out what that future

  554. is going to be.

  555. And mark what we read there

  556. in verse 23.

  557. And the city has no need

  558. of sun or moon

  559. to shine on it,

  560. for the glory of God

  561. gives its light,

  562. and its lamp is the Lamb.

  563. By its lights

  564. will nations walk,

  565. and the kings of the earth

  566. will bring their glory into it,

  567. and its gates will never be shut

  568. by day,

  569. and there will be no night there.

  570. They will bring into it

  571. the glory and the honor

  572. of the nations.

  573. What's the future

  574. going to be like?

  575. Stop and think with me

  576. just for a moment

  577. of how messy the day is

  578. that we live in.

  579. How unbelievably tense,

  580. marked by turmoil.

  581. Everywhere you turn,

  582. you see good reason

  583. to be reasonably anxiety,

  584. or have a reasonable anxiety,

  585. with the messiness of life.

  586. Our government is not

  587. what you'd like.

  588. Am I right?

  589. The neighborhoods

  590. that you live in

  591. are not as safe

  592. as you'd like.

  593. The job that you have,

  594. it's not as certain

  595. as you'd like.

  596. The health that you enjoy

  597. is not what you hope.

  598. And everywhere we live,

  599. relationships,

  600. a struggle.

  601. Well, guess what?

  602. The day is coming

  603. when we will enjoy

  604. the fulfilled promises of God

  605. in every aspect of our life,

  606. and one of the proofs of that

  607. is what God did

  608. and is doing

  609. for the nation of Israel.

  610. You mark there

  611. of how this story ends

  612. in Revelation,

  613. but I want you to turn

  614. to another passage

  615. to see a better picture

  616. of the promises God made

  617. to the nation of Israel

  618. in particular.

  619. Go over to Jeremiah chapter 31.

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  620. Jeremiah chapter 31.

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  621. If you're in Isaiah,

  622. just kind of cut forward

  623. a little bit

  624. and go to Isaiah chapter 31

    Isaiah 31 chapter mention

  625. or Jeremiah 31.

  626. Let me remind you of something.

  627. We had communion.

  628. Was it last week, Pastor?

  629. Yes, it was, right?

  630. Yeah.

  631. And if you're looking

  632. at the passage

  633. in 1 Corinthians 11,

  634. Jesus speaks of the new covenant,

  635. right?

  636. This cup is the new covenant

  637. in my blood.

  638. What is the new covenant?

  639. Remember, covenant is a promise.

  640. Basically, there are two kinds

  641. of promises.

  642. There's promises in which you agree

  643. and somebody else agrees,

  644. or there's an unconditional covenant.

  645. I want you to look at Isaiah

  646. or Jeremiah chapter 31

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  647. and go to 31 through 34.

  648. Behold, the days are coming,

  649. declares the Lord,

  650. that I will make a new covenant

  651. with the house of Israel

  652. and the house of Judah,

  653. not like the covenant

  654. that I made with their fathers

  655. on the day

  656. when I took them by the hand

  657. to bring them out

  658. of the land of Egypt,

  659. my covenant that they broke,

  660. though I was their husband,

  661. declares the Lord.

  662. Now stop for a moment.

  663. God says the new covenant

  664. is going to be different

  665. than that covenant.

  666. That covenant is one

  667. that they failed to keep.

  668. A reminder.

  669. After God gave the Ten Commandments

  670. to the nation of Israel,

  671. if you were to go back

  672. into the book of Exodus,

  673. you would find there

  674. that after Moses read the covenant

  675. and the sacrifice was made,

  676. here's what the nation of Israel said.

  677. All that you have said,

  678. we will do.

  679. How'd that go?

  680. You read through the Pentateuch

  681. and you think,

  682. I can't believe it.

  683. I mean, you stop and think about it.

  684. Every morning when an Israelite got up,

  685. he had food that came from where?

  686. Heaven.

  687. And every morning when he got up,

  688. he saw that there was a pillar of cloud

  689. or there was a cloud over the tabernacle

  690. or there was a pillar of fire by night.

  691. Do you think they had any doubt

  692. who was in charge

  693. and who was leading them?

  694. No.

  695. And yet,

  696. in their stubborn,

  697. dark hearts,

  698. they kept on rebelling

  699. and God kept on caring for them.

  700. So here we are.

  701. Jeremiah,

  702. I'm going to make a different covenant with you.

  703. And in verse 33,

  704. this is the covenant

  705. that I will make with the house of Israel

  706. after those days,

  707. declares the Lord.

  708. I will put my law within them

  709. and I will write it on their hearts

  710. and I will be their God

  711. and they will be my people.

  712. Periodically,

  713. I end up in conversation with people

  714. who make professions of faith,

  715. but they really have no evidence of faith.

  716. Do you follow what I'm talking about?

  717. I mean,

  718. it's still moderately popular to say,

  719. yes, I'm a believer,

  720. I'm a believer.

  721. But the truth of the matter is,

  722. there's no evidence.

  723. This passage is indicating

  724. that one of the genuine characteristics

  725. of a person who is a believer

  726. is a connection with the Word of God.

  727. There's an affection,

  728. not always,

  729. but there is,

  730. remember it says,

  731. as newborn babes desiring

  732. the sincere milk of the Word.

  733. One of the things that I get into

  734. when I'm talking to a person

  735. about the authenticity of their faith

  736. is,

  737. question is,

  738. has there ever been a time

  739. when you were actually

  740. genuinely interested in the Word?

  741. You were encouraged by it,

  742. you were strengthened by it,

  743. you were convicted by it,

  744. you were connected to it.

  745. You know,

  746. it's one thing to read a letter

  747. from somebody you don't care.

  748. It's another thing to read a letter

  749. from someone you really love.

  750. Years ago when we had a Christian school here,

  751. I remember walking across the,

  752. between the two buildings

  753. and finding a note folded up real small.

  754. Now,

  755. being a person who grew up in boarding school,

  756. there was a lot of a perverse curiosity in me,

  757. so I opened it up.

  758. Oh,

  759. it was drippy.

  760. It was,

  761. it was as sappy a note

  762. as I've read in some time.

  763. Of course,

  764. I haven't read many of those

  765. for a long time,

  766. but,

  767. but I remember reading it

  768. and so,

  769. I had the nerve

  770. to take it to the young man

  771. and say,

  772. hey,

  773. this probably belongs to you

  774. because your name's on it.

  775. when I read the letter,

  776. it didn't mean a thing to me.

  777. He turned all colors of red,

  778. you know,

  779. it was like,

  780. but it meant a lot to him.

  781. So,

  782. coming back,

  783. here's God.

  784. Look at the passage.

  785. He says,

  786. here's what I'm going to do.

  787. I'm going to put my law within you

  788. and I'm going to write it on your hearts.

  789. Are there any of you here

  790. that have ever memorized Bible verses

  791. and they didn't mean a thing to you?

  792. You were just doing it

  793. because you wanted to play games

  794. in Awana

  795. or,

  796. you know,

  797. you got a prize in VBS

  798. or something like that,

  799. but,

  800. but then,

  801. then,

  802. there have been those moments

  803. where,

  804. where adversity and hardship

  805. has just brought you

  806. brokenhearted to God

  807. and the word has touched

  808. and encouraged your heart

  809. and lifted you up

  810. and it's found a place

  811. and it's been revival

  812. and encouragement,

  813. right?

  814. God says,

  815. hey,

  816. this is what I'm going to do

  817. and here he is

  818. talking to a people

  819. who he gave him the word

  820. and it just didn't connect

  821. and he says,

  822. here's what I'm going to do.

  823. You don't need to worry about,

  824. I'm going to drive that business home.

  825. I'm going to get the word in your life,

  826. okay?

  827. And verse 34,

  828. and no longer shall each one

  829. teach his neighbor

  830. and each his brother

  831. saying,

  832. know the Lord

  833. for they'll know me.

  834. from the least of them

  835. to the greatest

  836. and then mark the last part

  837. for I will forgive

  838. their iniquity

  839. and I will remember

  840. their sins

  841. no more.

  842. I have been reading

  843. through the scriptures

  844. and

  845. I'm in the Psalms

  846. right now

  847. and one of the things

  848. that I've been

  849. kind of struck by

  850. is

  851. the psalmist

  852. talking about

  853. the sins of youth,

  854. okay?

  855. Forgive the sins

  856. of my youth.

  857. Don't remember

  858. my sins

  859. from my youth

  860. and

  861. boy,

  862. I don't know

  863. how many of you

  864. kind of think back

  865. and some of you

  866. are fairly young

  867. are still in that youth part

  868. and are kind of

  869. stacking up the crowd

  870. or the tally

  871. but some of you

  872. are older

  873. and you can remember

  874. oh,

  875. that wasn't smart.

  876. That was wicked.

  877. I mean,

  878. yeah.

  879. Here is God

  880. saying to his people,

  881. look at that passage again,

  882. I will forgive

  883. their iniquity

  884. and I will remember

  885. their sin

  886. no more.

  887. one of the

  888. undeniable pleasures,

  889. pleasure that I have

  890. in talking to people

  891. about the Lord Jesus

  892. is I can look them

  893. in the eye

  894. and I can tell them this,

  895. I know

  896. the one

  897. who can forgive

  898. all of your sins

  899. and take away

  900. the shame

  901. and guilt

  902. of the darkness

  903. of your heart.

  904. You ever laid awake

  905. at night

  906. feeling bad

  907. about something?

  908. A lie you told?

  909. Something you stole?

  910. A gross dishonesty?

  911. Manipulating someone else

  912. and taking something

  913. from them?

  914. Immorality?

  915. And the burden

  916. of that darkness

  917. just eats away

  918. at your heart

  919. at night

  920. and there really

  921. seems to be

  922. no recovery.

  923. You know what it says

  924. in the Bible?

  925. I will forgive

  926. all your sins.

  927. I will take away

  928. that burden

  929. and that sin.

  930. And here we are

  931. understanding

  932. that God

  933. made promises

  934. to the nation

  935. of Israel

  936. and God

  937. is going

  938. to keep them.

  939. Now his

  940. unconditional covenant

  941. to Abraham

  942. and to the nation

  943. of Israel

  944. gives us

  945. confidence

  946. in his

  947. unconditional

  948. covenant

  949. with us.

  950. We are a people

  951. that do believe

  952. in salvation

  953. being something

  954. that when we are

  955. saved

  956. we don't have to

  957. sit in constant

  958. anxiety

  959. about whether or not

  960. we're going to

  961. make it home.

  962. I bump into people

  963. periodically

  964. and you know

  965. hey

  966. if you were to

  967. die tonight

  968. and God

  969. were to ask you

  970. why he should

  971. let you into

  972. heaven

  973. what would you

  974. say?

  975. Well I don't

  976. know.

  977. I'm trying

  978. the best I can.

  979. Have you ever

  980. heard that answer?

  981. I'm trying

  982. the best I can.

  983. Well I am

  984. thankful

  985. that my

  986. getting home

  987. does not

  988. have anything

  989. to do

  990. with me

  991. trying the

  992. best I can.

  993. My confidence

  994. rests

  995. in the finished

  996. work of Christ

  997. not in mine.

  998. And Jeremiah

  999. reminds me

  1000. of that

  1001. work of God.

  1002. Let me bring

  1003. you to the

  1004. last part

  1005. that I want

  1006. you to see.

  1007. Go back

  1008. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  1009. chapter 60

  1010. and see the

  1011. blessing to

  1012. the nations.

  1013. Do other

  1014. people get

  1015. blessed

  1016. when Israel

  1017. is blessed?

  1018. Well

  1019. God told

  1020. Abraham that

  1021. that's the way

  1022. it would work.

  1023. work.

  1024. Incidentally

  1025. as a

  1026. corollary

  1027. to that

  1028. over in

  1029. 2 Corinthians

  1030. and we're

  1031. just kind

  1032. of a

  1033. sidebar

  1034. here for

  1035. a moment

  1036. but in

  1037. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1:4

  1038. chapter 1

  1039. verse 4

  1040. it tells

  1041. me

  1042. that the

  1043. blessings

  1044. I've

  1045. received

  1046. in part

  1047. are to

  1048. play out

  1049. into the

  1050. lives

  1051. of other

  1052. people.

  1053. Isn't

  1054. that right?

  1055. And so

  1056. we look

  1057. at

  1058. Isaiah

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  1059. chapter 60

  1060. and look

  1061. at verse

  1062. 2 and

  1063. 3.

  1064. The latter

  1065. part of

  1066. 2 it

  1067. says

  1068. but the

  1069. Lord will

  1070. arise upon

  1071. you and

  1072. his glory

  1073. will be

  1074. seen upon

  1075. you and

  1076. nations will

  1077. come to

  1078. your light

  1079. and kings

  1080. to the

  1081. brightness

  1082. of your

  1083. rising.

  1084. Think

  1085. back with

  1086. me again

  1087. to the

  1088. promise that

  1089. God made

  1090. to Abraham

  1091. through you

  1092. all the

  1093. nations of

  1094. the earth

  1095. will be

  1096. blessed.

  1097. I'm going

  1098. to make

  1099. you a

  1100. great nation

  1101. and I'm

  1102. going to

  1103. bless you

  1104. and I'm

  1105. going to

  1106. make your

  1107. name

  1108. great

  1109. and all

  1110. the families

  1111. of the

  1112. earth will

  1113. be blessed

  1114. through you.

  1115. Now

  1116. do you see

  1117. the similarity?

  1118. God made

  1119. a promise

  1120. to Abraham

  1121. that all

  1122. the nations

  1123. of the

  1124. earth would

  1125. be blessed

  1126. through his

  1127. offspring

  1128. and that

  1129. promise has

  1130. had partial

  1131. fulfillment

  1132. in the coming

  1133. of our

  1134. Christ who

  1135. died and

  1136. rose again

  1137. to be the

  1138. savior of

  1139. all who

  1140. trust in

  1141. him by

  1142. faith.

  1143. But there

  1144. still is a

  1145. portion of

  1146. the promises

  1147. that are yet

  1148. to be realized

  1149. and that is

  1150. in the eternal

  1151. reign of

  1152. Christ over

  1153. all the

  1154. earth.

  1155. I listen

  1156. to our

  1157. songs and I

  1158. think about

  1159. the things we

  1160. sing about

  1161. Jesus being

  1162. king.

  1163. The day is

  1164. coming that

  1165. he will reign

  1166. over all the

  1167. earth and he

  1168. will reign for

  1169. all eternity.

  1170. I am

  1171. thankful that

  1172. I see less

  1173. on Facebook

  1174. today about

  1175. politics.

  1176. I'm not sure

  1177. it's just

  1178. because I've

  1179. excluded people

  1180. that are

  1181. obsessive about

  1182. it.

  1183. But you know

  1184. I can only

  1185. take so

  1186. much.

  1187. It does

  1188. make me

  1189. kind of

  1190. think forward

  1191. I am

  1192. looking forward

  1193. to the day

  1194. that Jesus

  1195. is in

  1196. charge.

  1197. And that's

  1198. going to be

  1199. wonderful.

  1200. And so you

  1201. look here in

  1202. the reality

  1203. of the fact

  1204. and you

  1205. realize that

  1206. the promise

  1207. that God

  1208. made to

  1209. Abraham has

  1210. had partial

  1211. fulfillment in

  1212. the coming of

  1213. our Savior.

  1214. But the

  1215. promise of

  1216. blessing will

  1217. be completed

  1218. in the

  1219. eternal reign

  1220. of Christ.

  1221. Are you

  1222. looking forward

  1223. to that?

  1224. Are you

  1225. longing for

  1226. his coming?

  1227. Are you

  1228. anticipating it?

  1229. How many of

  1230. you know what

  1231. Maranatha

  1232. means?

  1233. It does

  1234. not.

  1235. It's not

  1236. pronounced

  1237. Marantha.

  1238. In the

  1239. old days

  1240. when we

  1241. had a

  1242. school I

  1243. used to

  1244. just die

  1245. when they

  1246. would go

  1247. on the

  1248. radio and

  1249. they'd go

  1250. on the

  1251. TV and

  1252. say Marantha

  1253. Christian

  1254. school.

  1255. But anyway

  1256. I stopped

  1257. trying to

  1258. correct people.

  1259. Hey it's

  1260. good.

  1261. Works for

  1262. you.

  1263. How do

  1264. you spell

  1265. it?

  1266. Do you

  1267. know what

  1268. it means?

  1269. Our

  1270. Lord's

  1271. coming.

  1272. It is to

  1273. be something

  1274. that

  1275. characterizes

  1276. the heart

  1277. of the

  1278. believer.

  1279. I'm

  1280. looking forward

  1281. to it.

  1282. Why?

  1283. Because for

  1284. one I'm

  1285. going to

  1286. see him.

  1287. For two I'm

  1288. going to be

  1289. like him.

  1290. And third I

  1291. am going to

  1292. enjoy his

  1293. perfect reign

  1294. over all

  1295. all the

  1296. kingdoms of

  1297. the earth and

  1298. over all of

  1299. creation for

  1300. all of

  1301. eternity.

  1302. eternity.

  1303. That's the

  1304. way I'd

  1305. like every

  1306. person's

  1307. story to

  1308. end.

  1309. Do you

  1310. understand

  1311. that point?

  1312. But the

  1313. truth of

  1314. the matter

  1315. is all

  1316. of eternity

  1317. will be

  1318. spent in

  1319. one of

  1320. two

  1321. conditions.

  1322. Those who

  1323. have come

  1324. in humility

  1325. and brokenness

  1326. confessing their

  1327. sins and

  1328. believing in

  1329. the finished

  1330. work of

  1331. Christ will

  1332. spend eternity

  1333. with him.

  1334. That's good.

  1335. If you were to

  1336. go back to the

  1337. book of

  1338. Revelation and

  1339. you don't need

  1340. to go there

  1341. this morning you

  1342. will find that

  1343. there is another

  1344. part to it.

  1345. Those who

  1346. refuse the

  1347. offer of

  1348. salvation through

  1349. the finished

  1350. work of

  1351. Christ will

  1352. spend all of

  1353. eternity in

  1354. hell suffering

  1355. forever for

  1356. their rebellious

  1357. and hardened

  1358. hearts.

  1359. And when's

  1360. the time to

  1361. come to grips

  1362. with that?

  1363. Now,

  1364. now,

  1365. now,

  1366. and so I

  1367. would appeal

  1368. to you if you

  1369. are here this

  1370. morning and

  1371. don't know the

  1372. Lord Jesus

  1373. Christ as your

  1374. Savior,

  1375. don't walk out

  1376. of here saying

  1377. well there will

  1378. be another day

  1379. because you

  1380. don't know

  1381. that.

  1382. The fact of

  1383. the matter is

  1384. is Christ

  1385. Jesus came

  1386. into the

  1387. world to

  1388. save sinners

  1389. and if you

  1390. are here and

  1391. you sense the

  1392. burden of your

  1393. heart and you

  1394. realize that the

  1395. darkness of your

  1396. soul is not

  1397. something that

  1398. you can solve,

  1399. I would plead

  1400. with you,

  1401. trust in the

  1402. Lord Jesus

  1403. Christ in whom

  1404. alone is

  1405. salvation.

  1406. Let's close

  1407. in prayer.

  1408. Father God,

  1409. I'm thankful

  1410. that you keep

  1411. promises.

  1412. You have

  1413. promised to

  1414. bless.

  1415. You have

  1416. promised also

  1417. to judge.

  1418. and this

  1419. morning you

  1420. offer the

  1421. gift of

  1422. salvation to

  1423. all who will

  1424. believe in the

  1425. Lord Jesus

  1426. Christ and

  1427. that work of

  1428. belief is a

  1429. work of your

  1430. grace.

  1431. And I would

  1432. plead with you

  1433. this morning that

  1434. you would touch

  1435. the lives of

  1436. those that are

  1437. here that do

  1438. not know Christ

  1439. that they would

  1440. be drawn to the

  1441. cross.

  1442. That believers

  1443. who are under

  1444. the burden and

  1445. heartache and

  1446. challenge of life

  1447. would rest in

  1448. confidence that

  1449. you who have

  1450. done everything

  1451. for our salvation

  1452. will bring them

  1453. through the

  1454. heartache and

  1455. the challenge of

  1456. this day.

  1457. You will not

  1458. fail them.

  1459. Help us to

  1460. walk out of

  1461. here victorious

  1462. because of

  1463. Christ.

  1464. And to display

  1465. that joy and

  1466. that victory to

  1467. an unbelieving

  1468. world with

  1469. quietness and

  1470. with gentleness.

  1471. We ask this in

  1472. Jesus' name.

  1473. Amen.
