  1. Well, I'd like to begin by thanking those of you who let us, Pastor David and I, spend the last several days, Wednesday, Thursday, Thursday, and Friday at the Together for the Gospel Conference.

  2. Of godly men and hear gifted communicators expound on the scriptures.

  3. In many ways, it was a humbling experience, but also a blessed experience.

  4. So thank you for letting us get away.

  5. Any of you who have spent time away from home, whether you're a mom or whether you're a dad, understand that when one of the two of you are gone, sometimes there's some misbalance in the house.

  6. Things aren't quite the way that they should be.

  7. You know, there's a stabilizing force that comes when either mom or dad are both together.

  8. And so riding back in the car yesterday reminded one of the pastors that was riding with us was just sharing with me some of the challenges that were happening in his own home because he was away.

  9. And then also being reminded of some of the challenges my own wife had with our children.

  10. And just sometimes the hardship of that.

  11. Dealing with kids when mom or dad are not around.

  12. You know that as a parent, there's a desire for there to be joy for your kids.

  13. That's the end game, right?

  14. Your desire is to introduce to them the kinds of experiences that are going to lead them to wholesome and lasting joy.

  15. You want to help in their behavior, but that's secondary to the ultimate goal of helping them be more like Christ.

  16. And so what that means is in your desire for joy for your family, sometimes there are those seeming moments of contradiction.

  17. Where someone who was looking from the outside would say,

  18. Whoa! Are you really looking for joy in your home?

  19. Is that really the objective?

  20. Because that sure didn't seem very joy worthy, that moment in your family.

  21. But you know that if you have a love for your kids, and if that love is true and deep,

  22. that sometimes it brings you to the point of saying,

  23. Stop! Don't put your hand on that stove!

  24. It's too hot.

  25. You're going to burn yourself.

  26. Or you're walking across the street, and there have been moments where we're making our way to a restaurant,

  27. and one of the kids is moving ahead, and you see the car coming.

  28. He's like, Wait! Stop!

  29. And in that moment, there is the severity of the instruction and the sounding of the warning that goes out.

  30. It's a sounding of warning because of a deep love for your child.

  31. And what seems to be severe, what seems to be harsh, what seems to be a bit strong in its force,

  32. is coming because of the ultimate desire for the preservation and the joy of that child.

  33. Well, this past week, there were some moments in our home of trying to preserve joy.

  34. And it was interesting, yesterday, and it's hard not to be specific.

  35. Oh well, poor little guy is going to get sold out again.

  36. You find that in moments of severity, it is in the moments of severity that often lead to the fullest joy.

  37. Yesterday, Timothy was watching a show, a cartoon.

  38. And it's a cartoon that kind of the life stories of Jesus, and the story was about Bethlehem.

  39. And he asked me the question, What does Bethlehem mean, Daddy?

  40. And I says, Well, Bethlehem is the house of bread.

  41. And he said, Well, that's really interesting because Jesus says, I am the bread of life.

  42. And he was born in Bethlehem.

  43. And I just sat back and, Wow, where did that come from?

  44. What a connection!

  45. How did that happen?

  46. And it was because in the previous day, through a disciplined moment,

  47. the question posed for my wife was, What are some of the names of Jesus?

  48. What are some of the things you know about him?

  49. And one of those names that came up was, I am the bread of life.

  50. It is through the, sometimes the severe moments of correction and punishment,

  51. the hard words that seem to pierce, are the moments that lead to the fullest joy.

  52. Last week, our introduction in 1 John introduced us to a couple of purpose statements of this apostle for us.

  53. So if you would, please open your Bibles to 1 John chapter 1.

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  54. I want to just read through verses 1 through 4 as an introduction.

  55. And then we'll move into verses 5 to 10 as we begin our study.

  56. But I want to remind us of some things so that we know what John's heart is.

  57. Because from this point on, in our study of the gospel, of this letter of 1 John,

  58. it will be one hard thing after the other.

  59. It will leave us wondering, John, do you really care about us?

  60. I thought you were the apostle of love.

  61. I thought you cared about our joy.

  62. And John will say, that's exactly why I'm doing this.

  63. That's exactly why I'm sharing these hard words with you.

  64. It's because I want your joy.

  65. So let me read for us verses 1 to 4.

  66. Here's what it says.

  67. That which we have seen and heard.

  68. Proclaim to you.

  69. So that you too may have fellowship with us.

  70. And indeed, our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.

  71. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

  72. There are two of the four purpose statements in this letter.

  73. Two of the purpose statements are found in those three verses.

  74. John wants us to understand front and center why he is writing this letter to this church of Ephesus.

  75. Why he writes this letter to us.

  76. What is the point?

  77. What is the Holy Spirit trying to accomplish in your life and in my life through the instruction that He'll give through this letter?

  78. The first purpose statement is there in verse 3.

  79. Notice what it says.

  80. That which we have seen and heard.

  81. We proclaim to you.

  82. Why?

  83. What does it say?

  84. That you may have fellowship with us.

  85. And indeed, our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.

  86. I write this to you because I want you to enjoy and experience true fellowship.

  87. Without Jesus Christ, there can be no community.

  88. Without Jesus Christ, there can be no genuine fellowship.

  89. Without Jesus Christ, your hopes for a relationship that will last, that will go any deeper than the surface,

  90. you have no hope of that kind of relationship apart from Christ.

  91. But with Christ, you can have true fellowship.

  92. True fellowship with God and true fellowship with God's people.

  93. That's what Christ came to do.

  94. He came to restore what was broken in the fall.

  95. Jesus came to correct the sin, the damage that Adam and Eve did in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  96. He came to correct all of those things for us so that the isolation and the rejection,

  97. the alienation that we rightly deserved and experienced,

  98. the hostility of God on sin,

  99. He came to correct that issue.

  100. He came to make things right with God.

  101. He came to reconcile us and to make us new with Him

  102. so that we could experience fellowship.

  103. Are you experiencing fellowship with God today?

  104. Not just some casual relationship.

  105. Not just some, I talk to God once in a while kind of thing.

  106. But would you qualify your relationship with God as something that's intimate?

  107. Something that's sweet?

  108. Something that is continual?

  109. Like, I just can't get enough of Him.

  110. That's the spirit you get from John.

  111. Even though Jesus was now in heaven at this point of the writing,

  112. He was so caught up with the experience of Jesus,

  113. He just can't help but explain the enthusiasm that He has to the church of Ephesus.

  114. It is the kind of experience that He had because He was able to touch and hear and see and behold Him.

  115. But in a way, He wants this church to understand what He had in practicality,

  116. what He had in the physicality,

  117. can also be experienced spiritually with Him today.

  118. Even though the church of Ephesus would never come to know Jesus personally

  119. in terms of a physical relationship,

  120. it was something that they could know.

  121. Something that they could have for themselves.

  122. And He wants them to taste of that,

  123. to know that, and to have that.

  124. That's the purpose,

  125. one of the purposes of writing this letter.

  126. I want you to know the sweetness and intimacy of knowing our Savior.

  127. The second purpose statement is there in verse 4.

  128. It says,

  129. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

  130. John wants you to experience joy.

  131. Not superficial joy.

  132. He wants you to experience enduring, lasting, hope-filled joy.

  133. The kind of joy that will carry you through.

  134. The kind of joy that will overcome the various circumstances of life.

  135. Maybe not surprisingly,

  136. the time where Jesus talks about joy the most

  137. happens to be the night before He is crucified.

  138. Of the eight times that He mentions joy in the Gospel of John,

  139. seven of them occur in John 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17.

  140. This time where He's spending the last final moments with His disciples

  141. before His crucifixion.

  142. How can anyone talk about joy in a time like that?

  143. How can anyone promise future joy to a group of disciples

  144. who in a very short period of time

  145. are going to walk through some sorrow, some grieving,

  146. some departure of the one that they loved?

  147. And that this is the moment,

  148. the very moment where Jesus chooses

  149. to select out this special topic

  150. to talk about joy and to promise joy to them.

  151. It's because joy comes from the Spirit.

  152. Joy comes from God Himself.

  153. And so joy overcomes any of the circumstances

  154. or situations in which you find yourself.

  155. And as John is reflecting on his experience with Christ,

  156. and as he's looking at this church,

  157. what he wants for them is to experience joy.

  158. Not just knowledge of God through some academic exercise,

  159. but he wants them to know true fellowship with God

  160. through this intimate experience with Him and with His people.

  161. But it's through this fellowshipping experience,

  162. it's cultivating this joy that just overflows from their life.

  163. The satisfaction that they can't get any other way.

  164. And with that in mind,

  165. that leads us now into a more difficult topic

  166. that we're going to begin to find in verses 5 to 10.

  167. Throughout the course of this message,

  168. what I want to do is,

  169. I want to demonstrate,

  170. or maybe I should say,

  171. I want to ask for God throughout the course of this message

  172. to really do a work in our lives,

  173. to help make His Word abundantly clear.

  174. So I'm just going to pause at this time.

  175. I'm going to pray for us.

  176. We're going to move from one point to the next

  177. and probably use prayer as a way,

  178. as a hinge,

  179. to get us from one point to the next.

  180. So let me pray for us,

  181. and we'll move to this next point.

  182. Amen.

  183. God, it is our desire this morning

  184. to lift up the glory of Christ,

  185. to be people who are pursuing passionately

  186. an experience with You,

  187. a fellowshipping experience with You

  188. that is cultivated with You

  189. and flows into our relationships with one another.

  190. Lord, we want to enjoy fellowship that comes from God.

  191. This unity of experience

  192. because of having been placed into Christ,

  193. the work of Your Holy Spirit

  194. in making us one,

  195. one people.

  196. And Lord, we also want to understand

  197. and know Your joy.

  198. We want it to be personal.

  199. We want it to be practical from day to day.

  200. We want it to carry us, Lord,

  201. just like it carried Jesus Christ,

  202. who for the joy set before Him endured the cross.

  203. And so whatever our experiences are this morning, Lord,

  204. I pray that Your joy would be tangible,

  205. would be real,

  206. would be personal,

  207. and that it would be such a radiant testimony

  208. in this world

  209. that it beckons others

  210. to want the same hope that we have.

  211. So Lord, as we look into Your Word,

  212. as we understand where You want us to be,

  213. You want us to be in fellowship,

  214. and You want us to be people

  215. who are experiencing joy.

  216. So now, Lord, help us

  217. as we look at Your Word,

  218. know how that joy comes.

  219. We pray in Jesus' name.

  220. Amen.

  221. Amen.

  222. So verse 5

  223. carries us to our first point this morning.

  224. It's what it says.

  225. It says,

  226. This is the message we have heard from Him

  227. and proclaimed to you

  228. that God is light

  229. and in Him is no darkness at all.

  230. What does a life of fellowship with God look like?

  231. What does an abiding life produce?

  232. How do we enter into fellowship with God?

  233. How do we experience the joy that He has for us?

  234. Well, we must first understand

  235. the supreme standard of fellowship.

  236. What is the supreme standard of fellowship?

  237. That's our first point this morning.

  238. John says,

  239. This is the message we have heard

  240. and proclaimed to you

  241. that God is light.

  242. Those are the words you would have expected to see there?

  243. Maybe we fit better.

  244. God is love, right?

  245. Isn't that what we need to know?

  246. That God is love?

  247. Certainly that's what Jesus came to demonstrate.

  248. For God so loved the world

  249. that He gave His only begotten Son.

  250. And that is important.

  251. John will not miss that point later on.

  252. That's coming in 1 John 4, 8, 9, and 10.

  253. God is love.

  254. But the first words,

  255. pen to ink,

  256. coming from Apostle John,

  257. is not God is love.

  258. The first thing I want you to understand

  259. is there is a standard here.

  260. There is a supreme standard of purity.

  261. I want you to know

  262. this is not something you deserve.

  263. I want you to recognize

  264. the unapproachable nature of God.

  265. The unapproachable nature of God.

  266. That's where He begins.

  267. Are you gripped

  268. with the unapproachable,

  269. unapproachableness,

  270. of your God this morning?

  271. Are you blown away

  272. by the fact that He is

  273. so immense

  274. and so pure

  275. and so holy

  276. that you couldn't even begin

  277. to have a relationship with Him

  278. if He had not bridged the gap?

  279. Are you gripped

  280. by your own personal standing

  281. of where you are

  282. in this whole mix?

  283. Do you understand

  284. the significance

  285. of the fact

  286. that God is light

  287. and in Him

  288. is no darkness at all?

  289. The Greek here

  290. actually wants to emphasize this.

  291. He says,

  292. there is no darkness,

  293. not even a hint.

  294. It is only purity,

  295. only radiance,

  296. only majesty,

  297. only holiness.

  298. That's our God.

  299. John.

  300. I think why he is so

  301. amazed

  302. at the accessibility

  303. of God

  304. because he has come

  305. to appreciate

  306. the unapproachableness

  307. of God.

  308. John wants us

  309. to understand

  310. the impossible

  311. standard

  312. of his moral excellence.

  313. And there is not

  314. a subtle shift

  315. that takes place

  316. between verses 1 and 4

  317. and now in verses 5 to 10.

  318. It's clear

  319. in verses 1 to 4

  320. that John is talking

  321. about Jesus.

  322. He's talking about

  323. that which we have heard

  324. and seen

  325. and looked upon.

  326. That's Jesus.

  327. He's there

  328. in flesh and blood.

  329. We can see Him.

  330. We can experience Him

  331. personally.

  332. But now he wants

  333. to make a dramatic shift

  334. in verse 5

  335. instead of just talking

  336. about Jesus.

  337. Now he wants us

  338. to recognize

  339. the true character

  340. of God Himself.

  341. The desire

  342. is here

  343. to make a clear

  344. connection

  345. that he's going

  346. to continue to address

  347. throughout the rest

  348. of this letter.

  349. That God is

  350. distinct from us.

  351. Don't imagine

  352. that fellowship

  353. with God

  354. can be achieved

  355. on your own.

  356. God is

  357. unapproachable.

  358. John is so

  359. caught up with this

  360. He actually begins

  361. His gospel

  362. in much the same way

  363. calling attention

  364. to the life

  365. and the light

  366. of Christ.

  367. He says in

  368. John 1.4

  369. In Him was life

  370. and the life

  371. was the light

  372. of men.

  373. The light shines

  374. in the darkness

  375. and the darkness

  376. has not overcome it.

  377. He is untouchable

  378. in this quality

  379. of light.

  380. light.

  381. And as we make

  382. our way through

  383. this letter

  384. we'll see

  385. the distinguishing

  386. marks

  387. of the light

  388. that God

  389. will produce

  390. in the lives

  391. of His people

  392. if there's

  393. genuineness

  394. to them.

  395. If there's

  396. authenticity

  397. in their lives.

  398. Why the connection

  399. between life

  400. and light?

  401. I think it's

  402. because

  403. as John

  404. is thinking

  405. about what

  406. does a true

  407. life look like.

  408. Jesus lived

  409. the life

  410. that He

  411. intended

  412. for all of us.

  413. He was the

  414. true life

  415. that was set

  416. in front of us

  417. as the model

  418. for how to live

  419. and how to really

  420. experience

  421. the kind of joy

  422. and power

  423. that comes

  424. from those

  425. who are walking

  426. with God

  427. and surrendered

  428. to the Holy Spirit.

  429. That is life.

  430. the only life

  431. really lived

  432. since Adam

  433. and Eve.

  434. Every other

  435. life is a life

  436. that is given

  437. to death

  438. and given

  439. to darkness.

  440. Jesus'

  441. was the only

  442. life that was

  443. pure

  444. in every way.

  445. That is the life

  446. He wants us

  447. to experience.

  448. Life

  449. and light

  450. of Christ.

  451. Not only

  452. is Jesus

  453. the creator

  454. of life

  455. but He is

  456. the embodiment

  457. of life

  458. and He is

  459. the giver

  460. of true

  461. spiritual

  462. life.

  463. You want to

  464. experience life?

  465. You got to go

  466. to the source.

  467. You got to go

  468. to God

  469. as the source

  470. of life

  471. and light.

  472. So there is

  473. an unapproachable

  474. nature of God

  475. but there is also

  476. the unblemished

  477. life of Christ.

  478. The unblemished

  479. life

  480. of Christ.

  481. That's our next point.

  482. we just spent

  483. several years

  484. walking through

  485. the gospel

  486. of John

  487. and seeing

  488. the life

  489. of Christ

  490. up close.

  491. Several years

  492. ago

  493. there was

  494. the movie

  495. The Passion.

  496. Any of you

  497. have watched

  498. that movie

  499. there are so

  500. many things

  501. to be said

  502. about that movie

  503. just the

  504. grotesqueness

  505. of the crucifixion.

  506. But what my

  507. own heart

  508. was gripped

  509. over

  510. was the

  511. purity

  512. of Christ

  513. through

  514. that entire

  515. experience.

  516. No other

  517. period in

  518. Jesus'

  519. life

  520. was the

  521. details

  522. of those

  523. final events

  524. chronicled

  525. in such

  526. a way.

  527. We have

  528. more

  529. about the

  530. last 24

  531. hours of

  532. Jesus'

  533. life

  534. than any

  535. of his

  536. previous

  537. ministry.

  538. history.

  539. And as I

  540. look at the

  541. chronicle of

  542. his life

  543. I wonder

  544. for myself

  545. how long

  546. would I

  547. have lasted

  548. even in

  549. that 24

  550. hour cycle

  551. before something

  552. would have

  553. snapped in

  554. me.

  555. Think about

  556. all that

  557. Jesus

  558. experienced

  559. in that

  560. last 24

  561. hours.

  562. There he

  563. is in

  564. the upper

  565. room

  566. bending

  567. down to

  568. wash the

  569. feet of

  570. those

  571. disciples

  572. who

  573. continued

  574. to

  575. compete

  576. with

  577. one

  578. another

  579. about

  580. who

  581. is

  582. more

  583. important.

  584. I

  585. think I

  586. wouldn't

  587. even

  588. last

  589. into

  590. that.

  591. And

  592. then there's

  593. Judas

  594. who thinks

  595. he's full

  596. in Jesus

  597. Christ

  598. about what

  599. he has

  600. in mind.

  601. And

  602. Jesus

  603. dismisses

  604. Judas

  605. and says

  606. go do

  607. what you're

  608. going to

  609. do

  610. Judas.

  611. Go

  612. ahead.

  613. Get

  614. busy.

  615. And

  616. there's

  617. the

  618. protesting

  619. Peter.

  620. No

  621. Jesus

  622. you're

  623. not

  624. going

  625. to

  626. wash

  627. my

  628. feet.

  629. Oh

  630. really

  631. Peter

  632. who do

  633. you

  634. think

  635. I

  636. am?

  637. Who

  638. are you

  639. talking

  640. to

  641. Peter?

  642. Or

  643. they're

  644. on

  645. the

  646. way

  647. to

  648. the

  649. garden

  650. of

  651. Gethsemane

  652. and

  653. those

  654. conversations

  655. that are

  656. taking

  657. place

  658. and

  659. the

  660. disciples

  661. don't

  662. have

  663. a

  664. clue

  665. what's

  666. coming.

  667. Jesus

  668. had

  669. told

  670. them

  671. many

  672. times

  673. what

  674. to

  675. anticipate.

  676. They

  677. finally

  678. get to

  679. the

  680. garden

  681. and

  682. there

  683. they

  684. are

  685. and

  686. Jesus

  687. is

  688. just

  689. having

  690. a

  691. heart

  692. to

  693. heart

  694. conversation

  695. with

  696. them

  697. and

  698. says

  699. can

  700. you

  701. just

  702. pray

  703. for

  704. a few

  705. moments

  706. here.

  707. He

  708. goes

  709. away

  710. to

  711. pour

  712. his

  713. heart

  714. out

  715. before

  716. the

  717. father.

  718. He

  719. comes

  720. back

  721. and

  722. they're

  723. all

  724. asleep.

  725. This

  726. happens

  727. on

  728. three

  729. different

  730. occasions

  731. and

  732. not

  733. once

  734. does

  735. Jesus

  736. demonstrate

  737. any

  738. carnality

  739. of his

  740. heart.

  741. just

  742. continues

  743. to

  744. faithfully

  745. and

  746. lovingly

  747. encourage

  748. them

  749. to

  750. the

  751. task.

  752. And

  753. there

  754. comes

  755. this

  756. band

  757. of

  758. those

  759. who

  760. would

  761. think

  762. they're

  763. going

  764. to

  765. manhandle

  766. Jesus.

  767. And

  768. with a

  769. word

  770. they all

  771. fall on

  772. their

  773. backs.

  774. But

  775. Judas

  776. still has

  777. the

  778. audacity

  779. to come

  780. and kiss

  781. Jesus

  782. on the

  783. face

  784. right there

  785. in front

  786. of them

  787. all.

  788. And

  789. there's

  790. Peter

  791. again

  792. flying

  793. off

  794. the

  795. handle

  796. cutting

  797. off

  798. ears

  799. and

  800. in a

  801. tender

  802. moment

  803. Jesus'

  804. willingness

  805. to reach

  806. down

  807. scoop

  808. up

  809. Malchus'

  810. ear

  811. and

  812. have

  813. a

  814. little

  815. healing

  816. ceremony

  817. right

  818. there

  819. on the

  820. way

  821. to

  822. his

  823. trial.

  824. Standing

  825. in front

  826. of

  827. all the

  828. people

  829. that

  830. should

  831. know

  832. better

  833. Caiaphas

  834. and

  835. high

  836. priests

  837. there

  838. they

  839. are

  840. accusing

  841. Jesus

  842. of

  843. blasphemy

  844. when

  845. here

  846. they're

  847. looking

  848. at

  849. their

  850. God

  851. in

  852. the

  853. face

  854. slapping

  855. and

  856. hitting

  857. and

  858. plucking

  859. his

  860. beard

  861. and

  862. then

  863. Pilate

  864. has

  865. the

  866. audacity

  867. to think

  868. that he's

  869. actually

  870. the one

  871. in

  872. charge

  873. Jesus

  874. I

  875. could

  876. call

  877. down

  878. a

  879. legion

  880. of

  881. angels

  882. who

  883. do

  884. you

  885. think

  886. you

  887. are

  888. Pilate

  889. and

  890. then

  891. the

  892. decision

  893. between

  894. Barabbas

  895. and

  896. Christ

  897. to

  898. let

  899. that

  900. wicked

  901. man

  902. go

  903. and

  904. there

  905. you

  906. are

  907. on

  908. the

  909. cross

  910. mocked

  911. by

  912. the

  913. two

  914. thieves

  915. that

  916. are

  917. side

  918. by

  919. side

  920. enduring

  921. the

  922. same

  923. penalty

  924. as

  925. you

  926. and

  927. still

  928. in

  929. tenderness

  930. forgiving

  931. and

  932. looking

  933. forward

  934. to

  935. having

  936. one

  937. of

  938. those

  939. thieves

  940. with

  941. you

  942. in

  943. paradise

  944. moment

  945. by

  946. moment

  947. I'm

  948. gripped

  949. by

  950. the

  951. purity

  952. of

  953. Christ

  954. at

  955. any

  956. of

  957. those

  958. moments

  959. my

  960. own

  961. flesh

  962. would

  963. have

  964. reeled

  965. up

  966. raised

  967. up

  968. but

  969. Jesus

  970. demonstrating

  971. faithfully

  972. and

  973. consistently

  974. a loving

  975. compassion

  976. for

  977. people

  978. and

  979. then

  980. in

  981. the

  982. final

  983. moments

  984. to

  985. say

  986. Father

  987. forgive

  988. them

  989. for

  990. they

  991. know

  992. not

  993. what

  994. they

  995. do

  996. to

  997. look

  998. forward

  999. to

  1000. God

  1001. working

  1002. in

  1003. hearts

  1004. and

  1005. lives

  1006. of

  1007. the

  1008. very

  1009. people

  1010. who

  1011. put

  1012. you

  1013. on

  1014. the

  1015. cross

  1016. this

  1017. is

  1018. the

  1019. beautiful

  1020. unblemished

  1021. life

  1022. of our

  1023. Savior

  1024. who

  1025. bridged

  1026. the gap

  1027. for us

  1028. who

  1029. demonstrated

  1030. that

  1031. although

  1032. God

  1033. was

  1034. unapproachable

  1035. that

  1036. through

  1037. Christ

  1038. in

  1039. fulfilling

  1040. all the

  1041. demands

  1042. of the

  1043. law

  1044. we

  1045. could

  1046. have

  1047. access

  1048. through

  1049. faith

  1050. in

  1051. him

  1052. the

  1053. beauty

  1054. of

  1055. our

  1056. Savior

  1057. who

  1058. through

  1059. love

  1060. and

  1061. compassion

  1062. and

  1063. submission

  1064. and

  1065. control

  1066. and

  1067. tenderness

  1068. and

  1069. faith

  1070. and

  1071. patience

  1072. and a

  1073. heart

  1074. full

  1075. of

  1076. forgiveness

  1077. demonstrated

  1078. the

  1079. purity

  1080. that

  1081. was

  1082. running

  1083. through

  1084. his

  1085. life

  1086. meeting

  1087. every

  1088. demand

  1089. of

  1090. God

  1091. for

  1092. him

  1093. and

  1094. for

  1095. us

  1096. this

  1097. is

  1098. our

  1099. God

  1100. coming

  1101. next

  1102. to

  1103. the

  1104. disqualifying

  1105. effects

  1106. of

  1107. sin

  1108. we

  1109. find

  1110. here

  1111. in

  1112. verse

  1113. 6

  1114. let me

  1115. read

  1116. that

  1117. for

  1118. us

  1119. so

  1120. moving

  1121. now

  1122. from

  1123. the

  1124. supreme

  1125. standard

  1126. of

  1127. fellowship

  1128. to

  1129. the

  1130. disqualifying

  1131. effects

  1132. of

  1133. sin

  1134. how do

  1135. we

  1136. experience

  1137. joy

  1138. how do

  1139. we

  1140. experience

  1141. fellowship

  1142. with

  1143. God

  1144. that's

  1145. where

  1146. we're

  1147. moving

  1148. here

  1149. we need

  1150. to see

  1151. who

  1152. he

  1153. is

  1154. and

  1155. now

  1156. we need

  1157. to get

  1158. a

  1159. hard

  1160. look

  1161. at

  1162. ourselves

  1163. recognize

  1164. the

  1165. significance

  1166. of

  1167. sin's

  1168. effect

  1169. in

  1170. our

  1171. lives

  1172. let

  1173. me

  1174. pray

  1175. oh

  1176. God

  1177. as we

  1178. continue

  1179. to work

  1180. through

  1181. this

  1182. passage

  1183. we

  1184. continue

  1185. to pray

  1186. for your

  1187. Holy

  1188. Spirit

  1189. to give

  1190. us

  1191. sensitivity

  1192. help

  1193. us

  1194. not

  1195. ever

  1196. to get

  1197. to the

  1198. point

  1199. where we

  1200. think

  1201. that

  1202. we're

  1203. beyond

  1204. this

  1205. we

  1206. thank

  1207. you

  1208. for

  1209. your

  1210. Holy

  1211. Spirit

  1212. that

  1213. he

  1214. is

  1215. a

  1216. spirit

  1217. who

  1218. convicts

  1219. and

  1220. even

  1221. now

  1222. Lord

  1223. we

  1224. pray

  1225. that

  1226. our

  1227. hearts

  1228. would

  1229. be

  1230. tender

  1231. and

  1232. open

  1233. and

  1234. sensitive

  1235. to

  1236. your

  1237. work

  1238. may

  1239. we

  1240. not

  1241. grieve

  1242. the

  1243. spirit

  1244. may

  1245. we

  1246. not

  1247. quench

  1248. the

  1249. spirit

  1250. help

  1251. us

  1252. to

  1253. listen

  1254. to

  1255. the

  1256. spirit

  1257. in

  1258. these

  1259. moments

  1260. we

  1261. pray

  1262. in

  1263. Jesus

  1264. name

  1265. amen

  1266. we

  1267. find

  1268. in

  1269. verse

  1270. 6

  1271. and

  1272. 8

  1273. and

  1274. 10

  1275. three

  1276. different

  1277. characters

  1278. three

  1279. different

  1280. responses

  1281. to

  1282. sin

  1283. now

  1284. these

  1285. aren't

  1286. the

  1287. only

  1288. responses

  1289. to

  1290. sin

  1291. but

  1292. these

  1293. are

  1294. the

  1295. ones

  1296. that

  1297. John

  1298. brings

  1299. to

  1300. our

  1301. attention

  1302. this

  1303. morning

  1304. the

  1305. first

  1306. is

  1307. found

  1308. in

  1309. verse

  1310. 6

  1311. here's

  1312. what

  1313. it

  1314. says

  1315. if

  1316. we

  1317. say

  1318. we

  1319. have

  1320. fellowship

  1321. with

  1322. him

  1323. while

  1324. we

  1325. walk

  1326. in

  1327. darkness

  1328. we

  1329. lie

  1330. and

  1331. do

  1332. not

  1333. practice

  1334. the

  1335. truth

  1336. indifference

  1337. now

  1338. John

  1339. asked us

  1340. a question

  1341. this morning

  1342. as we were

  1343. worshipping

  1344. the question

  1345. went something

  1346. along this

  1347. along these

  1348. lines

  1349. I don't think

  1350. I'll have

  1351. the exact

  1352. words

  1353. but

  1354. the question

  1355. was something

  1356. that said

  1357. how many

  1358. of us

  1359. think

  1360. we've

  1361. arrived

  1362. right

  1363. and we

  1364. all would

  1365. nod our

  1366. heads

  1367. a hearty

  1368. yes

  1369. none

  1370. of us

  1371. think

  1372. we've

  1373. arrived

  1374. maybe

  1375. a

  1376. complimentary

  1377. question

  1378. which would

  1379. get to

  1380. the heart

  1381. of what

  1382. John

  1383. is

  1384. dealing

  1385. with

  1386. here

  1387. is

  1388. how

  1389. many

  1390. of

  1391. us

  1392. care

  1393. you may

  1394. know

  1395. where

  1396. you are

  1397. but

  1398. do

  1399. you

  1400. give

  1401. a

  1402. rip

  1403. and

  1404. do

  1405. you

  1406. give

  1407. a

  1408. rip

  1409. enough

  1410. to

  1411. do

  1412. something

  1413. about

  1414. it

  1415. there's

  1416. a lot

  1417. on the

  1418. line

  1419. John

  1420. is

  1421. trying

  1422. to

  1423. help

  1424. us

  1425. understand

  1426. what

  1427. a

  1428. true

  1429. fellowshipping

  1430. community

  1431. looks

  1432. like

  1433. and

  1434. what

  1435. a

  1436. false

  1437. fellowshipping

  1438. community

  1439. looks

  1440. like

  1441. which

  1442. community

  1443. do

  1444. you

  1445. belong

  1446. in

  1447. those

  1448. who

  1449. are

  1450. indifferent

  1451. are

  1452. not

  1453. in

  1454. the

  1455. community

  1456. that's

  1457. the

  1458. message

  1459. here

  1460. and

  1461. then

  1462. you

  1463. begin

  1464. to

  1465. say

  1466. okay

  1467. we've

  1468. got

  1469. how

  1470. much

  1471. how

  1472. many

  1473. months

  1474. do

  1475. we

  1476. have

  1477. of

  1478. this

  1479. I'm

  1480. not

  1481. sure

  1482. how much

  1483. of this

  1484. I can

  1485. take

  1486. but

  1487. remember

  1488. this is

  1489. for

  1490. your

  1491. joy

  1492. John

  1493. wants

  1494. you to

  1495. experience

  1496. joy

  1497. today

  1498. you

  1499. cannot

  1500. experience

  1501. joy

  1502. until

  1503. you

  1504. have

  1505. fellowship

  1506. with

  1507. him

  1508. you

  1509. cannot

  1510. fellowship

  1511. with

  1512. him

  1513. if

  1514. you

  1515. are

  1516. indifferent

  1517. about

  1518. your

  1519. sin

  1520. if

  1521. we

  1522. say

  1523. we

  1524. fellowship

  1525. with

  1526. him

  1527. while

  1528. we

  1529. walk

  1530. in

  1531. darkness

  1532. we

  1533. lie

  1534. and

  1535. do

  1536. not

  1537. practice

  1538. the

  1539. truth

  1540. he

  1541. uses

  1542. some

  1543. words

  1544. here

  1545. that

  1546. he

  1547. continues

  1548. to

  1549. work

  1550. with

  1551. throughout

  1552. the rest

  1553. of

  1554. his

  1555. letter

  1556. now

  1557. we've

  1558. kind

  1559. of

  1560. titled

  1561. this

  1562. series

  1563. the

  1564. abiding

  1565. life

  1566. fellowship

  1567. we've

  1568. talked

  1569. about

  1570. walking

  1571. he

  1572. uses

  1573. that

  1574. word

  1575. here

  1576. in

  1577. verse

  1578. 6

  1579. this

  1580. walking

  1581. in

  1582. darkness

  1583. this

  1584. is

  1585. the

  1586. heart

  1587. of

  1588. one

  1589. who

  1590. is

  1591. inclined

  1592. to

  1593. sin

  1594. is

  1595. walking

  1596. down

  1597. the

  1598. path

  1599. is

  1600. quite

  1601. happy

  1602. with

  1603. the

  1604. condition

  1605. of

  1606. how

  1607. things

  1608. are

  1609. is

  1610. moving

  1611. in a

  1612. direction

  1613. that

  1614. is

  1615. not

  1616. in

  1617. the

  1618. direction

  1619. of

  1620. God

  1621. it

  1622. would

  1623. be

  1624. different

  1625. from

  1626. the

  1627. kind

  1628. of

  1629. life

  1630. that

  1631. we

  1632. find

  1633. in

  1634. Galatians

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  1635. chapter

  1636. 5

  1637. where

  1638. it

  1639. says

  1640. walk

  1641. in

  1642. the

  1643. spirit

  1644. and

  1645. you

  1646. will

  1647. not

  1648. fulfill

  1649. the

  1650. lust

  1651. of

  1652. flesh

  1653. it's

  1654. not

  1655. that

  1656. life

  1657. it

  1658. is

  1659. the

  1660. kind

  1661. of

  1662. life

  1663. that

  1664. is

  1665. walking

  1666. and

  1667. is

  1668. quite

  1669. happy

  1670. with

  1671. its

  1672. journey

  1673. a

  1674. journey

  1675. that

  1676. is

  1677. away

  1678. from

  1679. God

  1680. that

  1681. is

  1682. satisfied

  1683. and

  1684. settled

  1685. in

  1686. its

  1687. sin

  1688. !

  1689. how many

  1690. of us

  1691. are there

  1692. this

  1693. morning?

  1694. How many

  1695. of us

  1696. are okay

  1697. with a

  1698. critical

  1699. spirit?

  1700. How many

  1701. of us

  1702. are okay

  1703. with

  1704. firing off

  1705. our mouths

  1706. at our

  1707. family

  1708. when we

  1709. feel angry

  1710. about various

  1711. things?

  1712. how many

  1713. of us

  1714. are okay

  1715. with not

  1716. continuing

  1717. to cultivate

  1718. that love

  1719. relationship

  1720. with Christ?

  1721. How many

  1722. of us

  1723. are okay

  1724. with keeping

  1725. our lips

  1726. shut

  1727. about the

  1728. gospel?

  1729. How many

  1730. of us

  1731. have things

  1732. at work

  1733. we know

  1734. are wrong

  1735. but it's a

  1736. whole lot

  1737. easier just

  1738. to kind

  1739. of go

  1740. with the

  1741. flow

  1742. and not

  1743. buck

  1744. the

  1745. system?

  1746. how many

  1747. of us

  1748. have those

  1749. private

  1750. sins

  1751. in our

  1752. lives

  1753. that we've

  1754. just

  1755. learned

  1756. to be

  1757. okay

  1758. with?

  1759. We can't

  1760. be indifferent

  1761. about sin

  1762. if we want

  1763. to fellowship

  1764. with God.

  1765. Maybe the

  1766. first step

  1767. this morning

  1768. is to

  1769. come clean.

  1770. Come clean

  1771. with somebody

  1772. that you

  1773. love.

  1774. Come clean

  1775. with someone

  1776. who know

  1777. will hold

  1778. you accountable.

  1779. confess your

  1780. sins one

  1781. to another

  1782. so that you

  1783. might be

  1784. healed.

  1785. You want

  1786. to experience

  1787. the healing

  1788. of God

  1789. in your

  1790. life?

  1791. Maybe

  1792. this is

  1793. the day

  1794. to put

  1795. away

  1796. the

  1797. indifference

  1798. and start

  1799. living

  1800. in obedience.

  1801. That's the

  1802. first group.

  1803. The second

  1804. group is

  1805. in verse

  1806. 8.

  1807. I call

  1808. it the

  1809. group who

  1810. is deceived.

  1811. The group

  1812. that's deceived,

  1813. here's what

  1814. it says.

  1815. If we

  1816. say we

  1817. have no

  1818. sin,

  1819. we

  1820. deceive

  1821. ourselves

  1822. and the

  1823. truth is

  1824. not in

  1825. us.

  1826. Okay,

  1827. so this

  1828. is the

  1829. group of

  1830. individuals

  1831. and in

  1832. John's

  1833. day,

  1834. there was

  1835. this heresy

  1836. known as

  1837. Gnosticism

  1838. where they

  1839. kind of

  1840. separated the

  1841. material and

  1842. the spiritual

  1843. parts of

  1844. your life.

  1845. they

  1846. thought my

  1847. physical

  1848. life,

  1849. it can

  1850. do

  1851. whatever

  1852. it wants

  1853. to do,

  1854. I can

  1855. indulge in

  1856. the flesh

  1857. just as

  1858. long as

  1859. my spiritual

  1860. life has

  1861. arrived.

  1862. That was

  1863. one extreme.

  1864. The other

  1865. extreme was

  1866. to say,

  1867. okay,

  1868. I'm going

  1869. to live

  1870. such a

  1871. regimented

  1872. life that

  1873. I'm going

  1874. to avoid

  1875. every indulgence,

  1876. every

  1877. fleshly

  1878. delight,

  1879. and I'm

  1880. not going

  1881. to participate

  1882. in certain

  1883. things,

  1884. so it

  1885. became very

  1886. legalistic

  1887. in nature.

  1888. Either way,

  1889. there were

  1890. some in

  1891. that group

  1892. who had

  1893. said,

  1894. I finally

  1895. arrived.

  1896. I've sinned

  1897. in the past,

  1898. God has

  1899. forgiven me

  1900. for those

  1901. things,

  1902. but now

  1903. things are

  1904. good.

  1905. I'm where

  1906. I need

  1907. to be

  1908. spiritually.

  1909. John is

  1910. trying to

  1911. help them

  1912. understand,

  1913. the Christian

  1914. life is a

  1915. broken life.

  1916. the Christian

  1917. life is a

  1918. humble life.

  1919. The one

  1920. who is

  1921. really

  1922. pursuing

  1923. God,

  1924. and the

  1925. closer you

  1926. get to

  1927. the sun,

  1928. the darker

  1929. the spots

  1930. in your

  1931. life become.

  1932. You understand

  1933. the blemishes

  1934. in your own

  1935. heart and

  1936. life.

  1937. The spotlight

  1938. has been

  1939. shining,

  1940. and now

  1941. there's

  1942. nothing but

  1943. exposure in

  1944. your life.

  1945. And as

  1946. you submit

  1947. yourself to

  1948. the exposing

  1949. light of

  1950. God,

  1951. you recognize

  1952. those things

  1953. that you

  1954. were comfortable

  1955. with before,

  1956. you're not so

  1957. comfortable with

  1958. now.

  1959. That's how

  1960. the Apostle

  1961. Paul could

  1962. say,

  1963. I'm the

  1964. chief of

  1965. sinners.

  1966. It's because

  1967. the closer he

  1968. got to God,

  1969. the more he

  1970. understood the

  1971. significance of

  1972. sin in his

  1973. own life.

  1974. And that's

  1975. what John's

  1976. trying to

  1977. combat here,

  1978. is the

  1979. sense of

  1980. deception

  1981. that you

  1982. have arrived

  1983. spiritually.

  1984. And again,

  1985. we might not

  1986. ever say

  1987. that vocally,

  1988. but we do

  1989. that functionally

  1990. when we decide

  1991. that there's no

  1992. more progress

  1993. to be had.

  1994. John wants

  1995. us to

  1996. understand,

  1997. if you want

  1998. to experience

  1999. joy in the

  2000. presence of

  2001. God,

  2002. you need to

  2003. continue to be

  2004. broken as

  2005. people.

  2006. And then

  2007. finally in

  2008. verse 10,

  2009. we've

  2010. encountered the

  2011. indifferent and

  2012. the deceived,

  2013. and now we

  2014. encounter in

  2015. verse 10 the

  2016. defiant.

  2017. The defiant.

  2018. It says,

  2019. if we say we

  2020. have not

  2021. sinned, we

  2022. make him a

  2023. liar, and

  2024. his word is

  2025. not in us.

  2026. These would be

  2027. the people who

  2028. would say, I

  2029. have never

  2030. sinned.

  2031. I've not

  2032. sinned in the

  2033. past, I've

  2034. not sinned

  2035. currently.

  2036. And we

  2037. would say,

  2038. how could

  2039. anyone ever

  2040. come to that

  2041. kind of

  2042. conclusion?

  2043. In every

  2044. sense of the

  2045. word, this is

  2046. a hopeless

  2047. group.

  2048. But to

  2049. turn the

  2050. spotlight on

  2051. ourselves, we

  2052. might never be

  2053. so foolish as

  2054. to say this,

  2055. but functionally,

  2056. this is how we

  2057. act when we

  2058. choose not to

  2059. forgive.

  2060. forgive.

  2061. This is how

  2062. we act when

  2063. we choose to

  2064. hang on to

  2065. bitterness.

  2066. You look at

  2067. somebody else's

  2068. sin, and you

  2069. see all of the

  2070. grotesqueness about

  2071. that, and you

  2072. think of yourself

  2073. that you are more

  2074. worthy, and they

  2075. are less worthy

  2076. because of the

  2077. things taking place

  2078. in their life.

  2079. And Jesus deals

  2080. with this.

  2081. He says, don't

  2082. even think that

2083. if you ask for my

  2084. forgiveness, but

  2085. you are unforgiving,

  2086. that there's any

  2087. forgiveness offered

  2088. to you.

  2089. Don't think that

  2090. there's never any

  2091. point in your life

  2092. where there is not

  2093. sin taking place.

  2094. Recognize your

  2095. bankruptcy.

  2096. Don't make God

  2097. into a liar.

  2098. Look at the

  2099. audacity of that.

  2100. And now he

  2101. begins to turn the

  2102. spotlight on the

  2103. hope that we find.

  2104. That's the

  2105. darkness, the

  2106. difficulty of our

  2107. own personal

  2108. situation.

  2109. But now we can

  2110. look at the

  2111. abiding life with

  2112. God.

  2113. What does it look

  2114. like?

  2115. What does this

  2116. abiding life with

  2117. God look like?

  2118. Let me pray for

  2119. us.

  2120. God, as we look

  2121. at this, give us

  2122. hope.

  2123. Help us to see

  2124. that there is hope

  2125. in Jesus.

  2126. There is forgiveness

  2127. in Jesus.

  2128. There is cleansing

  2129. in Jesus.

  2130. Thank you for

  2131. Jesus.

  2132. We pray.

  2133. Amen.

  2134. First we find the

  2135. abiding life with

2136. God is a life of

  2137. fellowship.

  2138. We see that in

  2139. verse 7.

  2140. Verse 7.

  2141. If we walk in

  2142. the light as he

  2143. is in the light,

  2144. we have fellowship

  2145. with one another.

  2146. In the blood of

  2147. Jesus Christ, his

  2148. son cleanses us

  2149. from all sin.

  2150. Now, that is a

  2151. surprising conclusion.

  2152. That's not how I

  2153. would expect this

  2154. verse to go.

  2155. It says, if we

2156. walk in the light as

2157. he is in the light,

  2158. we have fellowship

  2159. with one another.

  2160. Now, I would

  2161. expect we have

  2162. fellowship with him,

  2163. right?

  2164. That's what you

  2165. would expect to go

  2166. in this verse.

  2167. But John wants us

  2168. to understand that

  2169. something is going

  2170. on here.

  2171. That fellowship

  2172. with God

  2173. necessitates and

  2174. overflows into

  2175. fellowship with

  2176. God's people.

  2177. You cannot

  2178. believe yourself

  2179. an abiding life

  2180. person if you're

  2181. okay with not

  2182. fellowshipping with

  2183. God's people.

  2184. sanctification.

  2185. You see, the

  2186. church is the

  2187. context for

  2188. sanctification.

  2189. This is the way

  2190. that we grow up

  2191. into Christ.

  2192. It only happens

  2193. as we're together.

  2194. It only happens

  2195. as we're ministering

  2196. to and encouraging

  2197. and stirring one

  2198. another up to love

  2199. and good deeds

  2200. and doing all of

  2201. the one anothering

  2202. that God has

  2203. called us to.

  2204. It only happens

  2205. in the context

  2206. of community.

  2207. You see, this is

  2208. the place where

  2209. God has designed

  2210. all of those

  2211. things to happen,

  2212. the sanctifying

  2213. work of God

  2214. to help us be

  2215. more like Him

  2216. in terms of

  2217. shining His

  2218. light in this

  2219. world.

  2220. It only happens

  2221. in the church.

  2222. So if you're not

  2223. fellowshipping with

  2224. the church,

  2225. you can't grow

  2226. spiritually.

  2227. This is the

  2228. place where you

  2229. learn.

  2230. how difficult

  2231. love can be

  2232. at times.

  2233. And you learn

  2234. the significance

  2235. of pursuing

  2236. peace and

  2237. making things

  2238. right and being

  2239. held accountable

  2240. and serving

  2241. the body.

  2242. I've always

  2243. found it quite

  2244. interesting in the

  2245. scripture that

  2246. we're commanded

  2247. to do all of

  2248. the things that

  2249. the Holy Spirit

  2250. has gifted us

  2251. to do.

  2252. So for example,

  2253. we're commanded

  2254. to be hospitable

  2255. and yet

  2256. there's a

  2257. spiritual gift

  2258. of hospitality.

  2259. We're commanded

  2260. to be people

  2261. of mercy

  2262. and yet we

  2263. find in the

  2264. scripture that

  2265. there is a

  2266. gift,

  2267. spiritual gift

  2268. of mercy.

  2269. We're commanded

  2270. to share the

  2271. gospel with

  2272. other people

  2273. and yet we

  2274. find in the

  2275. scripture that

  2276. there's actually

  2277. a spiritual gift

  2278. of evangelism.

  2279. You ever wonder

  2280. why that happens?

  2281. It's because we

  2282. can't be like

  2283. Christ without

  2284. learning how it

  2285. works from the

  2286. Holy Spirit's

  2287. help as he's

  2288. gifted others to

  2289. do what we

  2290. cannot.

  2291. That make sense?

  2292. And so as we

  2293. spend time with

  2294. one another and

  2295. we see, oh,

  2296. that's what

  2297. effective evangelism

  2298. looks like.

  2299. Let me partner

  2300. with that individual

  2301. and learn this

  2302. process or that's

  2303. what hospitality

  2304. looks like.

  2305. Let me learn

  2306. from this

  2307. individual how

  2308. to be hospitable

  2309. or be a person

  2310. of mercy.

  2311. We can only be

  2312. like Christ in

  2313. fellowshipping

  2314. community.

  2315. God has designed

  2316. it that way.

2317. It is a life of

  2318. fellowship.

2319. It is a life of

  2320. sanctification.

  2321. We also find it's

  2322. a life of

  2323. cleansing.

  2324. A life of

  2325. cleansing.

  2326. We see that at

  2327. the end of

  2328. verse 7.

  2329. If we walk in

  2330. the light as he

  2331. is in the

  2332. light, we have

  2333. fellowship with

  2334. one another and

  2335. the blood of his

  2336. son cleanses us

  2337. from all sin.

  2338. What a wonderful

  2339. promise.

  2340. Cleansing that

  2341. comes from

  2342. Christ.

  2343. Being placed

  2344. into him,

  2345. into his death,

  2346. being placed into

  2347. his resurrection,

  2348. because of his

  2349. sacrifice on the

  2350. cross.

  2351. He experienced

  2352. the wrath of God

  2353. on the cross

  2354. for us.

  2355. And now because

  2356. of that,

  2357. the wonderful

  2358. exchange,

  2359. we exchange our

  2360. sinfulness for

  2361. his righteousness

  2362. and cleansing

  2363. comes through

  2364. forgiveness,

  2365. through faith in

  2366. him.

  2367. Now there is

  2368. freedom to

  2369. live,

  2370. truly live the

  2371. way God has

  2372. called us to

  2373. live.

  2374. And finally,

  2375. a life of

  2376. cleansing.

  2377. We see that in

  2378. verse 9.

  2379. If we

  2380. confess our

  2381. sins,

  2382. he is

  2383. faithful and

  2384. just to

  2385. forgive our

  2386. sins and to

  2387. cleanse us

  2388. from all

  2389. unrighteousness.

  2390. God's

  2391. grace.

  2392. Do you want to

  2393. experience fellowship

  2394. with God?

  2395. Do you want to

  2396. know the joy

  2397. that he has

  2398. for you today?

  2399. Do you want to

  2400. have that

  2401. experience of

  2402. fellowship with

  2403. God's people?

  2404. This is the

  2405. starting point.

  2406. It's the starting

  2407. point for us.

  2408. confession.

  2409. As we saw in

  2410. Isaiah,

  2411. in repentance

  2412. and rest is

  2413. salvation.

  2414. That's what we're

  2415. talking about here.

  2416. Confession and

  2417. repentance.

  2418. And so now,

  2419. I'm going to ask

  2420. for all of you

  2421. just to bow your

  2422. head.

  2423. And in these

  2424. moments,

  2425. as the musicians

  2426. come,

  2427. in these moments,

  2428. I'm going to ask

  2429. you to do what

  2430. we're called to do

  2431. right here in this

  2432. verse.

  2433. confess our sin.

  2434. Only then can

  2435. he forgive.

  2436. What is it

  2437. this morning

  2438. you need a

  2439. forgiveness for?

  2440. What is it

  2441. this morning that

  2442. will begin this

  2443. process of

  2444. helping to

  2445. get you on the

  2446. track of

  2447. fellowship with

  2448. him?

  2449. Let's spend a

  2450. few minutes.

  2451. I'll close this

  2452. in prayer.

  2453. And I'll turn it

  2454. over to the

  2455. worship team.

  2456. to lead us

  2457. in a song.

  2458. Lord, this

  2459. morning as we

  2460. have looked at

  2461. the unapproachable

  2462. light of

  2463. Christ,

  2464. we recognize

  2465. the alienation

  2466. that we

  2467. deserve.

  2468. Enemies of

  2469. you, hostile

  2470. towards you.

  2471. And God, we

  2472. thank you

  2473. that through

  2474. Jesus there is

  2475. access, there

  2476. is fellowship.

  2477. Fellowship with

  2478. you, fellowship

  2479. with your people,

  2480. forgiveness and

  2481. cleansing.

  2482. God, I pray

  2483. that you would

  2484. help us not

  2485. to be one of

  2486. those.

  2487. Create within

  2488. us a tenderness.

  2489. Create within

  2490. us a sense of

  2491. brokenness.

  2492. May there be

  2493. an active

  2494. obedience in

  2495. us to seek

  2496. accountability,

  2497. to confess

  2498. sin, to

  2499. restore broken

  2500. relationships,

  2501. to commit

  2502. ourselves to

  2503. ministry here,

  2504. to ministry of

  2505. this church,

  2506. but especially

  2507. ministry to

  2508. individuals.

  2509. May there be

  2510. in us a love

  2511. for you that

  2512. flows into a

  2513. love for your

  2514. people.

  2515. We praise you

  2516. in Jesus' name.

  2517. Amen.

  2518. This morning, if

  2519. there's anyone who

  2520. doesn't know

  2521. Jesus, I just

  2522. want to invite

  2523. you as we sing

  2524. this song to

  2525. come and we

  2526. want to introduce

  2527. you to this

  2528. fellowshipping life

  2529. of joy with

  2530. God.

  2531. We want you to

  2532. have it.

  2533. Maybe there's

  2534. some brokenness

  2535. here today.

  2536. Maybe some of

  2537. you are struggling

  2538. with various

  2539. things.

  2540. You just need

  2541. someone to carry

  2542. your burden.

  2543. we would love

  2544. to come alongside

  2545. you, pray with

  2546. you, and

  2547. encourage you

  2548. however we

  2549. can.

  2550. Maybe this

  2551. morning, some

  2552. of you say,

  2553. you know, I'd

  2554. like to just

  2555. take a step

  2556. here in

  2557. obedience.

  2558. I want to

  2559. acknowledge I

  2560. need help

  2561. spiritually.

  2562. And I want

  2563. this to be the

  2564. day where it's

  2565. clear, this

  2566. watershed moment,

  2567. I am determined

  2568. from this point

  2569. to make Christ

  2570. the Lord of

  2571. my life.

  2572. Maybe some

  2573. of you want

  2574. to follow

  2575. through in

  2576. obedience of

  2577. baptism or

  2578. become a

  2579. member of our

  2580. church.

  2581. We would

  2582. just like to

  2583. encourage you

  2584. to do that

  2585. as well.

  2586. But let's

  2587. stand as we

  2588. sing.

  2589. and I'll

  2590. continue to

  2591. with

  2592. a

  2593. little

  2594. to

  2595. see you

  2596. in
