  1. Good morning.

  2. I'd like to share a little anxiety that I have this morning about speaking on Mother's Day.

  3. ! I feel like the pressure from the world is to get up here and go to get up here and go to

  4. and wish you a happy Mother's Day and preach a rousing message on the virtues and the honors of motherhood

  5. and for us to all leave smiling.

  6. However, I'm intimately aware that Mother's Day, as is true with most holidays, is bittersweet.

  7. In Romans 12, 15, we are called to rejoice with those who rejoice and to weep with those who weep.

  8. And so with that in mind, I just wanted to start this morning by expressing empathy

  9. and understanding that for some of you, Mother's Day is terribly hard as it is joyful for others.

  10. And that for probably most of us, it's a strange mix of both.

  11. And so as we come together as the body of Christ, I just would encourage you to keep in mind

  12. the admonition from 1 Corinthians 12, 26.

  13. If one member suffers, all suffer together.

  14. And if one member is honored, all rejoice together.

  15. Father, we rejoice together and weep together.

  16. And so would you join me in a prayer?

  17. Father, we rejoice over the gift of motherhood and the blessing of children.

  18. And we weep with those longing for the gift of motherhood and those who have suffered the pain of losing children.

  19. We honor and rejoice over those mothers that have sacrificed and selflessly served us in the body of Christ for all his glory.

  20. While we weep with those who continue to endure the pain of having lost mothers or experienced the hurtful relationships with their mothers.

  21. We rejoice over those who you have used in our lives as spiritual mothers.

  22. Those that have labored and anguished in our lives in order to see Christ formed in us.

  23. And we ask that you would grant us the passion and the privilege and the ability, the commitment to be spiritual mothers for others.

  24. And to leave a godly legacy until Christ returns.

  25. Father, we thank you that you open before us your throne of grace.

  26. That you invite us to come when we are struggling and when we are hurting.

  27. That we might find grace and mercy to help in our time of needs.

  28. And so, Father, we come before you.

  29. And Father, I confess you.

  30. You already know my heart that.

  31. I'm not sure about even getting through the sermon this morning apart from your grace.

  32. But as you see fit, then let it be.

  33. That Christ would be exalted in all things.

  34. In Jesus' name we pray.

  35. Amen.

  36. So, I don't know if any of you noticed.

  37. Many people have commented on last Sunday's sermon.

  38. And everybody loves Sloty.

  39. We'll have t-shirts made at the end of the week.

  40. But there really was a big problem with last week's sermon.

  41. Now, no one's confronted me yet.

  42. But I figure let's just go ahead and get it out in the open.

  43. But I'd like to do that by kind of reviewing with you what we talked about last week.

  44. So that hopefully it becomes more evident if you didn't notice yet.

  45. And so, if you remember, if you were with us.

  46. We talked about the fact that there are a lot of things in our lives.

  47. Things that are not necessarily sinful.

  48. But that subtly, that easily can move in our lives to a place that they become idols.

  49. And we become, almost without realizing it, at a place where we're loving the world.

  50. And that those idols are stealing away our love for the Father.

  51. And we also talked about three truths that John gives us in 1 John 2, verses 12-14.

    1 John 2:12–14

  52. That are truths that should enable us not only to love the brothers that we talked about.

  53. But also enable us to fight against these idols in our life.

  54. To turn away from them.

  55. And turn away from loving the world.

  56. And enable us to love the Father as we're called to do.

  57. And if you remember, those three truths were summarized like this.

  58. One, through Jesus, your sins have been forgiven.

  59. And you've been adopted into God's family.

  60. Number two, you are intimately aware of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

  61. And number three, you've experienced the power of the abiding word giving you strength and victory over the evil one in your own life.

  62. Now really, if you stop to think through that a little bit, that really is a good summary of the gospel, isn't it?

  63. That we see our sin and we come to understand how Jesus has saved us, forgiven us from those sins, and placed us into right relationship with God.

  64. And then through faith, we put our faith in all that Jesus has done on our behalf.

  65. His life, His death, His resurrection.

  66. And then we live each day under the lordship of Christ.

  67. Right?

  68. Seeing Him continue to work out our salvation in our lives.

  69. So really, those three points are a very good summary of the gospel.

  70. But in light of that, we talked about how those truths are powerful,

  71. yet so often our emotional response to those things is sadly inadequate.

  72. We fail to have an appropriate emotional response.

  73. Which, considering the strength of those truths, anything less than maybe ecstasy or something more is what would be appropriate.

  74. But yet, we seldom see that in our lives.

  75. And I talked about three reasons why those truths may not be having its full effect, if you remember.

  76. The first was, maybe we don't know Christ.

  77. And we talked about the fact that if we don't have a relationship with Jesus,

  78. then of course there's no emotional response to those truths.

  79. And just as I did last week, I'll just invite you, if any of you here are not sure that you have a relationship with Jesus,

  80. if you have never seen the depth of your sin,

  81. and found hope through what Christ has done,

  82. and have been reconciled to God through him,

  83. then don't leave today.

  84. Today is the day of salvation.

  85. Don't leave.

  86. Talk to somebody, whether it's myself or Pastor Andrew,

  87. or any of the people around you,

  88. that we can make sure that you leave here in a relationship with Christ.

  89. The second possibility is why these truths don't touch us as deeply as they should,

  90. was that we're not aware of our sinfulness.

  91. That we are not conscious of how deep our sin problem is.

  92. And you remember I said sometimes we tend to think that we're sinners because we sin.

  93. It's about certain behaviors.

  94. It's about being impatient when we're driving.

  95. Or it's about having that second look at an attractive woman.

  96. And that that's what makes us sinners, but that that's incorrect.

  97. That we sin because we're sinners.

  98. That from the time of conception, we come out as God-haters.

  99. But if we don't see that, if we don't see the depth of our sin,

  100. then maybe we won't respond to those truths.

  101. And the third one was that our love for the world,

  102. or our love for our idols impacts us such that we're not responsive to the truth of the gospel.

  103. Now, did you see it?

  104. Did you see the problem?

  105. You see, the problem is this.

  106. Okay?

  107. We have an idol problem.

  108. The gospel is the cure.

  109. But loving idols keeps the gospel from having its full effect in our lives.

  110. So we have an idol problem.

  111. We're kind of going in a circle, aren't we?

  112. If the gospel is supposed to be the cure,

  113. then how are we stuck in this idol cycle?

  114. That's what I termed it in my own mind.

  115. You know?

  116. Why are we stuck in this idol cycle?

  117. Idol problem.

  118. Gospel is a cure.

  119. Loving idols keeps us from having the full effect of the gospel,

  120. so we have an idol problem.

  121. So how do we break out of this?

  122. If the gospel is supposed to be the cure,

  123. then what is it that we need to boost the effectiveness of the cure

  124. so that it's working in our lives?

  125. Well, if you look at 1 John 2, verse 14,

    1 John 2:14

  126. the end of that verse,

  127. I think we find the answer to that question.

  128. 1 John 2, verse 14.

    1 John 2:14

  129. You can turn there if you want, but it's very quick.

  130. It goes like this.

  131. I write to you, young men,

  132. because you are strong,

  133. and the word of God abides in you,

  134. and you have overcome the evil one.

  135. You see, we see an emphasis here.

  136. If you remember, John's repeating himself,

  137. and if you see that there's an emphasis here on the abiding word,

  138. that the abiding word brings about victory over the evil one.

  139. And now, if you would, turn to 2 Timothy.

  140. This will be a passage that you're very familiar with as well.

  141. 2 Timothy 3, verses 14, starting in verse 14 through 17.

    2 Timothy 3:14

  142. 2 Timothy 3, verses 14 and following says,

    2 Timothy 3:14

  143. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed,

  144. knowing from whom you learned it,

  145. and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings,

  146. which are able to make you wise for salvation,

  147. through faith in Christ Jesus.

  148. And the part that is most familiar,

  149. all scriptures breathed out by God,

  150. and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction,

  151. for training in righteousness,

  152. that the man of God may be complete,

  153. equipped for every good work.

  154. Now, what I'd point out to you is in verse 14,

  155. where Paul says to Timothy,

  156. to continue in what you've learned,

  157. that that's really the same Greek word

  158. that John has translated as abide.

  159. Abide.

  160. And so, in John, we see that the word abides in us,

  161. and in Timothy here, we see Paul calling Timothy

  162. to abide in the truth.

  163. So, the word should abide in us,

  164. and we should abide in the word.

  165. And that is the way we break the idol cycle.

  166. Abiding in the word.

  167. That's the answer you've been waiting for.

  168. Abide in the word.

  169. The abiding word boosts the effect of the gospel in our lives

  170. to empower us to turn away from loving our idols.

  171. So, there's the problem.

  172. There's the answer.

  173. Abide in the word.

  174. Everybody say that with me.

  175. Abide in the word.

  176. That was really unimpressive.

  177. Let's say it like this.

  178. Abide in the word.

  179. Abide in the word.

  180. It is better.

  181. Now, some of you may be thinking,

  182. look, bucko,

  183. I'm doing my devotions every morning.

  184. At least most mornings.

  185. I'm at church every time the doors are open.

  186. And you know that if the doors are open at Maranatha,

  187. somebody's teaching the Bible.

  188. Right?

  189. I'm going to small group.

  190. We're studying the Bible.

  191. I'm even memorizing scripture.

  192. How much more abiding do you want me to do?

  193. And yet, I'm still struggling with loving the world and these idols in my life.

  194. First, the encouraging word.

  195. I want to encourage you.

  196. Everything that you are doing to get God's word into your life is fruitful and not in vain.

  197. Reading.

  198. However,

  199. I think we could all agree

  200. reading is not abiding.

  201. Right?

  202. I mean, how often,

  203. I won't ask any students to show raising of hands,

  204. how often have you read a page in a book

  205. or maybe a chapter in a book

  206. and then you go,

  207. huh,

  208. what did I just read?

  209. Okay.

  210. Reading is not abiding.

  211. I think we could also agree

  212. hearing

  213. is not abiding.

  214. Right?

  215. I mean, the reality is

  216. some of you have already forgotten

  217. how this sermon started.

  218. Okay?

  219. Hearing is not abiding.

  220. And I'm going to go so far

  221. as to say

  222. memorizing

  223. is not abiding.

  224. Again, if we were to take a poll

  225. of some students,

  226. especially at this time of year,

  227. right?

  228. Exams.

  229. Some of you have finished exams.

  230. Some of you have exams yet to do.

  231. You know how it is.

  232. You memorized all that stuff

  233. and you took that exam

  234. and Lord willing,

  235. you did well.

  236. But if we ask you

  237. a week later,

  238. a month later,

  239. how much of that material

  240. do you remember?

  241. You see,

  242. memorizing is not abiding.

  243. So then the question is,

  244. how do we abide?

  245. What is abiding?

  246. How do we let the word

  247. abide in us

  248. and us abide in the word?

  249. The Puritan,

  250. Richard Baxter,

  251. wrote this.

  252. Why so much preaching

  253. is lost among us

  254. and believers can run

  255. from sermon to sermon

  256. and are never weary

  257. of hearing or reading

  258. and yet

  259. have such languishing,

  260. starved souls.

  261. I know

  262. no truer

  263. or greater cause

  264. than their ignorance

  265. and unconscionable

  266. neglect

  267. of meditation.

  268. You see,

  269. some hearers

  270. have anorexia

  271. for they have

  272. neither appetite

  273. nor digestion.

  274. But others

  275. have bulimia.

  276. They have appetite

  277. but no digestion.

  278. So did you hear

  279. the answer

  280. for abiding?

  281. It's where he talks

  282. about our neglect

  283. of meditation.

  284. Meditation.

  285. Practically speaking,

  286. the most effective way

  287. to abide in the word

  288. and to see your heart

  289. change toward your idols

  290. is through

  291. meditating on God's word.

  292. And yet,

  293. meditation

  294. is the most often

  295. overlooked tool

  296. for truly abiding

  297. in the word.

  298. Now,

  299. I'm sure the majority

  300. of you know

  301. meditation is in the Bible

  302. but let's turn

  303. to Psalm 119.

  304. Psalm 119.

  305. This is a place

  306. we can see

  307. multiple verses

  308. quickly

  309. without having to

  310. flip all over.

  311. Psalm 119.

  312. We'll start

  313. with verse 15.

  314. Psalm 119

  315. starting with verse 15.

  316. It reads,

  317. I will meditate

  318. on your precepts

  319. and fix my eyes

  320. on your ways.

  321. Look down

  322. to verse 27.

  323. Make me understand

  324. the way

  325. of your precepts

  326. and I will meditate

  327. on your wondrous works.

  328. Look down

  329. a little further.

  330. verse 48.

  331. I will lift up

  332. my hands

  333. towards your commandments

  334. which I love

  335. and I will meditate

  336. on your statues.

  337. A little bit further.

  338. Verse 97.

  339. Oh, how I love

  340. your law.

  341. It is my meditation

  342. all the day.

  343. And finally,

  344. verse 148.

  345. 148.

  346. My eyes

  347. are awake

  348. before the watches

  349. of the night

  350. that I may meditate

  351. on your promise.

  352. You see,

  353. the Bible is full

  354. of passages

  355. on meditation.

  356. We see it

  357. given to us

  358. in examples

  359. from people like

  360. Melchizedek,

  361. Isaac,

  362. Moses,

  363. Joshua,

  364. David,

  365. Mary,

  366. Paul,

  367. Timothy.

  368. And so,

  369. throughout Scripture

  370. we can find

  371. the practice

  372. of meditation

  373. and yet

  374. so often

  375. it's still

  376. neglected.

  377. Now,

  378. I guess

  379. I should be clear

  380. because of

  381. the nature

  382. of things

  383. at this time

  384. in history.

  385. When we talk

  386. about Christian

  387. meditation,

  388. we're not talking

  389. about Eastern

  390. meditation.

  391. Okay?

  392. Eastern meditation,

  393. you know,

  394. more popular

  395. in my lifetime

  396. where you go

  397. and you empty

  398. your mind

  399. and,

  400. you know,

  401. llama,

  402. llama,

  403. llama,

  404. you know.

  405. That's not

  406. what we're talking

  407. about in Christian

  408. meditation.

  409. As a matter of fact,

  410. Christian meditation

  411. is the exact opposite.

  412. It's not the emptying

  413. of your mind,

  414. but it's the filling

  415. of your mind

  416. with truth

  417. and with Scripture.

  418. So when I talk

  419. about Christian meditation,

  420. here's the definition

  421. that I wrote down.

  422. The intentional

  423. focused thought

  424. on a specific

  425. truth of God's Word

  426. and its practical

  427. implications

  428. for your life.

  429. The intentional

  430. focused thought

  431. on a specific

  432. truth of God's Word

  433. and its practical

  434. implications

  435. for your life.

  436. Puritan Edmund

  437. Calammy

  438. said it this way,

  439. a true

  440. meditation

  441. is when a man

  442. does so meditate

  443. on Christ

  444. as to get

  445. his heart

  446. inflamed

  447. with the love

  448. of Christ.

  449. He so meditates

  450. on the truths

  451. of God

  452. as to be

  453. transformed

  454. into them.

  455. And he so meditates

  456. on sin

  457. as to get

  458. his heart

  459. to hate

  460. sin.

  461. Calammy

  462. went on

  463. to say

  464. that to do

  465. good meditation

  466. must enter

  467. three doors.

  468. Three doors.

  469. The door

  470. of understanding,

  471. the door

  472. of the heart

  473. or affections,

  474. and the door

  475. of practical

  476. living.

  477. He said,

  478. you must

  479. so meditate

  480. on God

  481. as to walk

  482. as God

  483. walks,

  484. and so

  485. meditate

  486. on Christ

  487. as to

  488. prize him

  489. and to live

  490. in obedience

  491. to him.

  492. So if you

  493. want to let

  494. loose the

  495. bazooka

  496. on the idols

  497. in your life,

  498. meditation

  499. is the answer.

  500. Meditation

  501. is the answer.

  502. And there

  503. are two types

  504. that I want

  505. us to look

  506. at.

  507. Two types

  508. of meditation.

  509. The first

  510. is occasional

  511. meditation.

  512. Occasional

  513. meditation.

  514. The second

  515. is deliberate.

  516. So occasional

  517. and deliberate

  518. meditation.

  519. First,

  520. occasional

  521. meditation.

  522. Occasional

  523. meditation

  524. takes

  525. what we

  526. encounter

  527. or observe

  528. through our

  529. senses

  530. and uses

  531. it to

  532. turn our

  533. hearts

  534. and minds

  535. to the

  536. things of

  537. God.

  538. Now,

  539. we see

  540. that in

  541. Scripture.

  542. David does

  543. that with

  544. the moon

  545. and the

  546. stars

  547. in Psalm

  548. 8.

  549. We see

  550. Solomon

  551. do the

  552. same thing

  553. in Proverbs

  554. 6 with

  555. the ants.

  556. We even

  557. see Christ

  558. doing that

  559. where he

  560. talks about

  561. well water

  562. in John

    John 4 chapter mention

  563. chapter 4.

  564. It's

  565. this

  566. awareness

  567. of

  568. everything

  569. around

  570. us

  571. and

  572. all

  573. of

  574. these

  575. things,

  576. these

  577. gifts

  578. point in

  579. our

  580. heart

  581. towards

  582. the

  583. things

  584. of

  585. God.

  586. Now,

  587. the truth

  588. is,

  589. that's the

  590. design of

  591. every good

  592. and perfect

  593. gift that

  594. comes from

  595. above.

  596. Right?

  597. I mean,

  598. every meal

  599. should remind

  600. us of the

  601. banquet that

  602. lays for us

  603. in heaven

  604. and what

  605. Christ has

  606. done to

  607. give us

  608. access to

  609. that.

  610. You know,

  611. every beggar

  612. that we

  613. see could

  614. remind us

  615. of our

  616. spiritual

  617. poverty,

  618. our need

  619. for grace

  620. and how

  621. God has

  622. met us

  623. there.

  624. Every kind

  625. act that

  626. happens in

  627. our life

  628. reminding us

  629. of the

  630. gracious

  631. kindness

  632. of God

  633. in Christ.

  634. Whether it's

  635. the creation

  636. itself,

  637. whether it's

  638. sunrise,

  639. sunset,

  640. whether it's

  641. the mountains

  642. or butterflies

  643. or trees

  644. or grass,

  645. even the

  646. smallest thing,

  647. all of these

  648. things cause

  649. us to

  650. point our

  651. hearts and

  652. minds towards

  653. the glories

  654. and the

  655. truths of

  656. God.

  657. The reality

  658. is,

  659. isn't that

  660. the goal

  661. of every

  662. stuffed animal

  663. ever given?

  664. Right?

  665. You know,

  666. Brenda gave

  667. me

  668. slowty to

  669. remind me

  670. of her

  671. love

  672. and to

  673. in turn

  674. stir my

  675. heart

  676. towards

  677. love

  678. for her.

  679. And so

  680. the

  681. Puritans

  682. talked about

  683. occasional

  684. meditation

  685. as being

  686. the easiest

  687. form of

  688. meditation.

  689. It didn't

  690. happen any

  691. time,

  692. any place,

  693. with anybody.

  694. And they

  695. actually wrote

  696. books.

  697. I mean,

  698. there are books

  699. with hundreds

  700. of examples

  701. of occasional

  702. meditation

  703. that they

  704. wrote for

  705. their people

  706. because,

  707. as you can

  708. imagine,

  709. Puritans

  710. were busy.

  711. They didn't

  712. have,

  713. you know,

  714. TV dinners

  715. and stuff.

  716. And so,

  717. you know,

  718. they were

  719. busy people

  720. and the

  721. pastors at

  722. that time

  723. would give

  724. them these

  725. examples so

  726. that even

  727. whether they

  728. were working

  729. in the fields,

  730. when they

  731. were walking

  732. from town

  733. to town,

  734. whatever the

  735. case may be,

  736. they were

  737. able to see

  738. the things

  739. around them.

  740. And they

  741. were able

  742. to use

  743. those things

  744. to enter

  745. into meditation

  746. and worship

  747. of God.

  748. Now,

  749. I'm not

  750. implying

  751. because it's

  752. easier that

  753. it's easy.

  754. I can honestly

  755. tell you

  756. that this week,

  757. having studied

  758. this some,

  759. I thought,

  760. okay,

  761. I'm going to

  762. give myself

  763. to more

  764. occasional

  765. meditation.

  766. And so,

  767. even,

  768. we were

  769. driving,

  770. we went

  771. down to

  772. my daughter's

  773. graduation,

  774. driving there,

  775. driving back,

  776. and I was

  777. like,

  778. God,

  779. okay,

  780. you know,

  781. trees,

  782. trees are

  783. green,

  784. green's about

  785. growing,

  786. you know,

  787. we grow in

  788. Christ,

  789. and oh,

  790. look,

  791. a squirrel.

  792. You know,

  793. honestly,

  794. I really had a

  795. hard time,

  796. like,

  797. getting through

  798. a thought,

  799. I would just

  800. get to the

  801. point where

  802. I thought,

  803. okay,

  804. I'm getting

  805. to some

  806. deep spiritual

  807. truth,

  808. and then I'd

  809. be like,

  810. hey,

  811. don't pull

  812. in front of

  813. me,

  814. you know,

  815. and so,

  816. I'm not

  817. implying

  818. occasional

  819. meditation is

  820. easy,

  821. it's just

  822. easier,

  823. but it still

  824. takes intentional

  825. commitment,

  826. right,

  827. it takes an

  828. intentional

  829. commitment for

  830. us to be

  831. looking for

  832. the things

  833. around us

  834. that can

  835. stir our

  836. hearts and

  837. minds to

  838. worship.

  839. not only

  840. that,

  841. but it

  842. also takes

  843. knowing

  844. God's

  845. word.

  846. You see,

  847. the more

  848. we know

  849. God's

  850. word,

  851. the more

  852. connections

  853. there are

  854. between us

  855. and what

  856. we experience,

  857. whether it's

  858. what we see

  859. or what we

  860. hear,

  861. whether it's

  862. interaction

  863. with people,

  864. whether it's

  865. interaction

  866. with nature,

  867. so it

  868. takes knowing

  869. God's word

  870. so that those

  871. connections can

  872. happen,

  873. and it also

  874. takes the

  875. discipline of

  876. pausing.

  877. You know,

  878. we're so

  879. busy,

  880. right?

  881. We're so

  882. busy,

  883. that's later,

  884. we'll talk

  885. about that,

  886. but you know,

  887. it's so

  888. hectic,

  889. and we always

  890. have some

  891. place to

  892. be,

  893. and usually

  894. we're late,

  895. and we have

  896. more to do

  897. than we have

  898. time to do

  899. it,

  900. and even

  901. just the

  902. discipline of

  903. pausing our

  904. thoughts to

  905. think on the

  906. things of

  907. God takes

  908. intentional

  909. commitment and

  910. effort.

  911. And so,

  912. occasional

  913. meditation,

  914. it's not

  915. easy,

  916. but it's

  917. easier.

  918. So,

  919. the second

  920. type of

  921. meditation,

  922. deliberate

  923. meditation.

  924. Now,

  925. the Puritans

  926. consider deliberate

  927. meditation the

  928. more important

  929. of the two,

  930. the more

  931. essential of

  932. the two.

  933. Deliberate

  934. meditation is

  935. intentionally setting

  936. aside time and

  937. space in your

  938. life each day

  939. to focus and

  940. reflect on the

  941. things of God.

  942. Deliberate

  943. meditation is

  944. intentionally setting

  945. aside time and

  946. space in your

  947. life each day to

  948. focus and

  949. reflect on the

  950. things of God.

  951. Thomas White

  952. said,

  953. deliberate meditation

  954. draws from four

  955. sources,

  956. scripture,

  957. practical

  958. Christian truths,

  959. providential

  960. experiences,

  961. and sermons.

  962. Sermons in

  963. particular are

  964. fertile fields for

  965. meditation.

  966. Moore wrote,

  967. James Usher,

  968. I like this one.

  969. James Usher said

  970. it this way,

  971. one hour spent

  972. in meditation is

  973. worth more than

  974. a thousand sermons.

  975. And this is not

  976. debasing of the

  977. word, but an honor

  978. unto it.

  979. You see, so

  980. often we are

  981. inclined for

  982. things to be so

  983. transitional even

  984. in our hearts and

  985. minds, right?

  986. You know, so far I

  987. did get a lot of

  988. comments on last

  989. week's message.

  990. All of them

  991. centered around

  992. Sloty.

  993. Everybody loves

  994. Sloty, okay?

  995. But the truth is

  996. how often do the

  997. things that we

  998. read, the things

  999. that we hear, the

  1000. things that we are

  1001. engaged with even in

  1002. God's word in

  1003. Bible study.

  1004. They pass through

  1005. our hands, our

  1006. minds, we're

  1007. leaking pots.

  1008. And so the

  1009. discipline of

  1010. deliberate meditation

  1011. is catching a

  1012. space to take

  1013. those things and

  1014. absorb them in.

  1015. Now I have ten

  1016. tips for you on

  1017. meditation.

  1018. Ten tips.

  1019. And all of

  1020. these quotes on

  1021. Puritans and

  1022. meditation are

  1023. primarily from two

  1024. books.

  1025. Let me give credit

  1026. where credit is due.

  1027. One is Puritan

  1028. theology, a

  1029. doctrine of life by

  1030. Dr. Joel Beeky.

  1031. And the other is

  1032. God's battle plan for

  1033. the mind, the

  1034. Puritan practice of

  1035. biblical meditation by

  1036. David Saxton.

1037. So if you would like

  1038. to know more, I

  1039. would highly recommend

  1040. both sources.

  1041. So ten tips on

  1042. deliberate meditation.

  1043. Number one,

  1044. meditation must be

  1045. frequent and

  1046. consistent.

  1047. frequent and

  1048. consistent.

  1049. You see, the

  1050. Puritans said

  1051. ideally twice a day.

  1052. Meditation should

  1053. happen at least twice

  1054. a day.

  1055. Okay.

  1056. It can happen at

  1057. least once a day,

  1058. but ideally twice a

  1059. day if time permits.

  1060. Now, they also said

  1061. though, that if you

  1062. wait too long between

  1063. meditations, times of

  1064. meditation, meditating

  1065. times, if you wait

  1066. too long between your

  1067. times of meditation,

  1068. the effect of those

  1069. times is greatly

  1070. lessened.

  1071. Actually, compared it

1072. to a bird and her

  1073. eggs.

1074. If the bird is too

  1075. long apart from the

  1076. nest, then the eggs

  1077. eventually die.

1078. So not only does it

  1079. need to be something

  1080. that's frequent, but

  1081. it's consistent.

  1082. Something that's

  1083. happened regularly.

  1084. And their

  1085. recommendation is to

  1086. pick a good time,

  1087. preferably your best

  1088. time, when you're at

  1089. your peak mentally, and

  1090. when there's the least

  1091. amount of distraction.

  1092. Okay.

  1093. Second, find a place

1094. that is quiet and free

  1095. from interruption.

  1096. Find a place for

  1097. meditation that is

  1098. quiet and free from

  1099. interruption.

1100. Now, I know some of

1101. you are probably at a

1102. point in life that I do

  1103. remember where you're

  1104. thinking, have you seen

  1105. my family?

1106. There are no places of

1107. quiet that are free from

  1108. interruption.

1109. And to that, I just

1110. want to give you an

  1111. example that I'm sure

  1112. you've probably heard

  1113. before.

  1114. But Susanna Wesley, you

  1115. know Susanna Wesley,

  1116. right?

1117. She was the mother of

  1118. John and Charles

  1119. Wesley.

  1120. They're more famous.

  1121. They had 19 children.

  1122. I don't think anybody

  1123. here has 19 children.

  1124. And Susanna Wesley was

  1125. committed to her time

1126. with God, and so twice

1127. a day, she would put

1128. her apron over her head.

  1129. And her children were

1130. taught if her apron was

1131. over her head, it was

1132. not the time to interrupt

  1133. mom.

  1134. I'm sure there was a

  1135. great deal of chastisement

  1136. to make that happen.

  1137. But again, finding the

  1138. place for quiet and

  1139. uninterrupted meditation

  1140. may take some creativity,

1141. but it's essential to have

  1142. time to reflect.

  1143. reflect.

  1144. Number three, begin by

  1145. asking the Holy Spirit

  1146. for strength and

  1147. perseverance to focus

  1148. your mind.

  1149. Again, Edmund Calamey

1150. wrote, I would have you

  1151. pray unto God to

  1152. enlighten your

  1153. understanding, to bring

  1154. life to your devotion,

  1155. to warm your

  1156. affections, and so

1157. bless that hour that by

  1158. meditation of holy things

1159. you would be made more

  1160. holy, that you would

  1161. have your lusts more

  1162. crucified, and your

  1163. graces more increased,

1164. that you may have more

1165. death to the world and the

1166. vanity of it, and more

1167. life to heaven and to

  1168. things of heaven.

1169. The reality is like all

  1170. spiritual disciplines, you

  1171. cannot be successful in

  1172. meditation on your own.

1173. So start with the Holy

  1174. Spirit, humbly seeking

  1175. his strength.

  1176. Number four, read the

  1177. scriptures.

  1178. Read the scriptures.

1179. Again, the whole point of

  1180. meditation is abiding in

1181. the word, so you need to

1182. get into the word, and

1183. let the word get into

  1184. you.

  1185. Find a verse or a

  1186. doctrine upon which to

  1187. meditate.

  1188. And the Puritans would

  1189. recommend you start easy,

1190. maybe on an attribute of

  1191. God, or on Christ's

  1192. character.

  1193. Don't start with things

1194. like the Trinity that are

  1195. a little more challenging.

1196. They say start easy and

  1197. work up.

1198. Consider one subject at a

  1199. time.

1200. Focus in on one truth.

  1201. Also, find truths that

  1202. are applicable to your

  1203. present situation.

  1204. Here's some examples.

1205. If you feel separated from

1206. God by your sin, meditate

  1207. on Christ's willingness to

  1208. forgive sinners and receive

1209. everyone who would come to

  1210. him.

  1211. Or if you're struggling

  1212. financially, meditate on

  1213. God's wonderful provision

1214. for those who are in need.

  1215. If you're facing physical

  1216. pain or struggles, meditate

1217. on God giving strength to

1218. the weak or healing to the

  1219. sick.

1220. You know, find areas that

1221. are applicable to where you

  1222. are.

1223. You don't have to start with,

1224. you know, the eminence of

  1225. God.

1226. Start with the things that

1227. are already on your mind

1228. and bring Scripture to bear

  1229. on them.

1230. And then work on choosing

1231. that verse or that topic

  1232. and committing it to

  1233. memory.

1234. So find it in Scripture and

1235. put it into your mind so that

1236. you can continue to chew on

  1237. it.

1238. Number five, use your memory

1239. to focus on all that Scripture

1240. has to say about your

  1241. subject.

  1242. Consider past sermons and

1243. other things you've heard or

  1244. read.

  1245. Another example from Edmund

  1246. Calamey.

  1247. He said,

1248. If you would meditate on the

1249. subject of sin, begin with

  1250. the description of sin.

1251. Proceed to the extent and the

  1252. spread of sin.

1253. Consider the original cause of

1254. sin and the effects of sin.

1255. Consider the property of sin in

1256. general and of your personal

  1257. sin in particular.

1258. Consider the opposite of sin,

  1259. grace.

1260. Think about metaphors for sin

1261. or the titles given to sin

1262. and all that Scripture says

  1263. concerning sin.

1264. So, after you've gotten into

  1265. God's Word and gotten God's

1266. Word into you, the goal is to

1267. focus in and allow the Holy

  1268. Spirit to bring to

1269. remembrance all that you may

1270. have heard, all that you have

  1271. read, Christian books.

1272. Now, as I was working on this,

1273. I'm going to give you just a

1274. little piece of information from

  1275. personal experience.

  1276. Okay?

1277. If you're like me, you probably

  1278. have a computer.

  1279. Okay?

1280. And you may do your Bible study

1281. on computer or on the

  1282. Internet.

1283. There's all kinds of stuff on

  1284. the Internet.

1285. And when I got to this point,

1286. originally, I was there with all

1287. of my software to help me study

1288. something and meditate on it

  1289. deeply.

1290. And the time quickly went and

  1291. technological issues.

1292. You know, trying to find this

1293. and then that and then, oh,

1294. look, I found this feature.

1295. And, you know, it was kind of

1296. like the squirrel of the

  1297. occasional meditation.

1298. And so, what I would say and

1299. what I would challenge you to

1300. is truly seek to use your

1301. memory and to allow the Holy

1302. Spirit to bring to remembrance

1303. the things on the topic you're

  1304. meditating.

1305. You know, if you want to study a

  1306. topic, do that.

1307. But understand that studying is

  1308. not meditating either.

  1309. Okay?

  1310. So, use your memory.

  1311. Focus in on it.

1312. Don't be distracted by other

  1313. things.

  1314. Number six.

  1315. Stir up your affections.

  1316. Stir up your affections.

1317. Such as love, desire, hope,

1318. courage, gratitude, zeal, and joy

  1319. to glorify God.

1320. Preach the truth to yourself.

1321. Preach the truth to yourself.

1322. That's something that we say

  1323. often in our household.

1324. Preach the truth to yourself.

1325. I actually got that from Dr.

  1326. Martin Lloyd-Jones.

1327. And it's the point where not

1328. only are you taking these

1329. truths in, but the goal is for

1330. there to be an emotional

  1331. response.

1332. You see, that's the breakdown

  1333. that we talked about

  1334. previously.

1335. How the truth can be there,

1336. but it becomes almost so

1337. common that we don't care

  1338. anymore.

1339. And so, in your meditation,

1340. the goal is to get that truth

1341. to the point where you have

1342. an emotional response to it.

1343. If you're thinking on the

1344. blood of Christ, you should

  1345. respond to that emotionally.

  1346. If you're thinking about God's

  1347. almighty power in creation,

1348. that should move your heart.

1349. Now, I accept that we run at

  1350. different levels of emotional

  1351. being-hood.

  1352. Okay.

1353. I know that, you know,

1354. I tend to be on the emotional

1355. end of things, and I'm like,

  1356. oh, a butterfly.

  1357. Oh, thank you, Jesus.

  1358. That butterfly is great.

1359. And some people are not that

  1360. way.

  1361. Okay.

1362. So, I'm not giving you a range.

1363. You don't have to be moved to

  1364. weeping every time.

1365. But in meditating, the goal is

1366. for the truth to move your

  1367. heart.

  1368. Okay.

1369. So, stir up your affections.

1370. Number seven, consider how the

  1371. things meditated upon should

  1372. impact how you live.

  1373. What are the practical

  1374. applications of these truths?

  1375. Again, follow Edmund Calamee's

  1376. advice.

1377. He said, if you ever would get

1378. good by the practice of

1379. meditation, you must come down

  1380. to particulars.

1381. And you must so meditate of

1382. Christ as to apply Christ to

  1383. your soul.

1384. And so meditate of heaven as to

1385. apply heaven to your soul.

  1386. Live out your meditation.

1387. He said meditation and practice

1388. should be like two sisters

  1389. walking hand in hand.

  1390. This isn't theoretical.

1391. You're not trying to decide how

1392. many angels can dance on the

  1393. head of a pin.

  1394. Okay.

  1395. It's the truth of God's word

  1396. moving your emotions but

1397. bringing you to a different way

  1398. of living.

1399. How does this live itself out in

  1400. your life?

1401. And number eight, take those

1402. applications and turn them into

  1403. resolutions.

  1404. Turn them into resolutions.

1405. He said, let your resolution be firm

1406. and strong, not mere wishes, but

  1407. resolved purposes and

  1408. determinations.

1409. So after your time in meditation,

1410. when you've reached the point where

1411. God's word has saturated you,

1412. you've had an emotional response,

  1413. you've seen a place where this

1414. should be lived out in your life,

  1415. write it down.

1416. Jonathan Edwards had a lot of

  1417. resolutions.

1418. We can't talk about all those.

1419. But it's a great practice to write it

  1420. down.

  1421. Okay.

1422. Today I will do this because of your

  1423. truth.

1424. And not only write it down, but

1425. share that with people, the people

1426. who are in your life that can hold

1427. you accountable, that can be praying

  1428. for you.

  1429. Share your resolutions.

1430. Number nine, conclude with prayer,

  1431. thanksgiving, and psalm singing.

1432. Prayer, thanksgiving, and psalm singing.

1433. Watson, another Puritan, said, pray

  1434. over your meditations.

  1435. Prayer sanctifies everything.

1436. Without prayer, they're but unhallowed

  1437. meditations.

1438. Prayer fastens meditation upon the

  1439. soul.

1440. Prayer is tying a knot at the end of

1441. meditation so it doesn't slip from

  1442. you.

1443. Pray that God will keep those holy

1444. meditations in your mind forever,

1445. and that you will savor them, and

1446. that the savoring of them will abide

  1447. upon your hearts.

1448. So as you come to an end, just as you

1449. started in prayer, end in prayer.

1450. Asking God to keep those in your mind

1451. because you can't do it.

  1452. We leak.

  1453. Ask for help.

1454. Number ten, finally, don't shift too

1455. quickly from meditation to engagement

1456. with the things of this world.

1457. Don't shift too quickly from meditation

1458. to engagement with things of this world.

  1459. It's kind of like when you've had a

1460. great meal and you just want to keep

1461. that flavor in your mouth, you know,

1462. that you ended on, you're like, that

  1463. was so good.

1464. I never want to eat anything again.

1465. You know, and so in our time of

1466. meditation, you know, we can have these

1467. great experiences, and if you go from

1468. that into a meeting where you're going

1469. to be arguing with people, you know,

1470. it's like, oh, God, you're so great.

1471. Oh, I want to kill these people.

  1472. Okay?

1473. So, you know, don't be too quick to the

  1474. things of the world.

  1475. Savor the moments.

  1476. Take a little time.

1477. Walk slowly out of the room from the

  1478. time of meditation.

1479. Again, a quote for you.

  1480. It says,

1481. Meditating is like trying to build a fire

  1482. from wet wood.

1483. Those who persevere will produce a flame.

1484. When we begin to meditate, we may first

1485. garner only a bit of smoke, then perhaps

1486. a few sparks, but at last there is a flame

1487. of holy affection that goes up towards God.

1488. And the Puritans would encourage you,

  1489. don't give up until there's flame.

1490. But they would also acknowledge that

1491. sometimes there's just no flame.

1492. And there are days when you just have to

1493. go, God, you know, I'm sorry.

1494. I know that I should be focused on your word,

1495. but today I just, it's just not happening.

1496. And you start again tomorrow.

  1497. Okay?

1498. Now, I know you might be inclined to think

1499. this is too simple of an answer

1500. for the problem that you have.

  1501. Whatever problem it is,

  1502. whatever idol it is,

1503. whatever struggle you're facing in your life,

1504. that sitting for some amount of time,

  1505. twice a day,

  1506. thinking about God's word

1507. is going to change your life.

  1508. Okay?

1509. I could understand that you might be hesitant

  1510. in that.

1511. But by the hand of providence,

1512. actually, when I was meeting with

1513. Faith and Molly this week,

  1514. we were talking about

  1515. a passage of scripture

1516. that they didn't know at the time

  1517. that God was saying,

1518. hey, this is really what you need

  1519. for your sermon.

  1520. So, 2 Kings chapter 5.

    2 Kings 5 chapter mention

  1521. 2 Kings chapter 5.

    2 Kings 5 chapter mention

  1522. You can turn there.

  1523. You don't have to.

1524. It might be familiar to you.

  1525. It's a story about Naaman

1526. going up to see Elisha

  1527. because he had leprosy.

1528. And so he found out there's a prophet.

1529. He went to the prophet Elisha

1530. and wanted to be healed.

  1531. Okay?

  1532. 2 Kings chapter 5.

    2 Kings 5 chapter mention

  1533. We'll start in verse 9.

  1534. It says,

1535. So Naaman came with his horses

  1536. and his chariots

1537. and stood at the doorway

1538. of the house of Elisha.

1539. Elisha sent a messenger to him,

  1540. saying,

1541. Go, wash in the Jordan seven times,

1542. and your flesh will be restored to you,

1543. and you will be clean.

  1544. But Naaman was furious,

1545. and he went away and said,

  1546. Behold, I thought,

1547. he will surely come out to me

1548. and stand and call on the name

1549. of the Lord his God

1550. and wave his hand over the place

  1551. and cure the leprosy.

1552. Are not Abana and Farah

  1553. the rivers of Damascus

1554. better than all the waters of Israel?

1555. Could I not wash in them

  1556. and be clean?

1557. So he turned and went away

  1558. in a rage.

  1559. Verse 13.

1560. Then his servants came near

1561. and spoke to him and said,

  1562. My father,

1563. had the prophet told you

1564. to do some great thing,

1565. would you not have done it?

  1566. How much more then

  1567. when he says,

1568. You wash and be clean?

1569. And so he went down

  1570. and dipped himself

1571. seven times in the Jordan

  1572. according to the word

1573. of the man of God

1574. and his flesh was restored

1575. like the flesh of a little child,

  1576. and he was clean.

1577. And so the point is this.

1578. If you look at your life

  1579. and the things

  1580. that you're struggling with,

1581. the things you have struggled with,

1582. the things that you've been

1583. struggling with for some time,

1584. isn't it worth giving meditation

  1585. on God's word a shot?

1586. If it was a bigger formula,

1587. if it was more impressive,

1588. maybe you'd be inclined to do it.

1589. But why not set aside time each day

  1590. to focus and practice

  1591. the discipline of meditation

1592. so that we can be faithful

  1593. to 1 John 2.

  1594. Again, 15 through 17.

1595. Do not love the world

1596. or the things in the world.

1597. If anyone loves the world,

1598. the love of the Father

  1599. is not in him.

1600. For all that is in the world,

1601. the desires of the flesh,

1602. the desires of the eyes

  1603. and pride of life

1604. is not from the Father,

1605. but is from the world.

1606. And the world is passing away

  1607. along with its desires.

1608. But whoever does the will of God

  1609. abides forever.

  1610. Let's pray.

  1611. Heavenly Father,

  1612. we come to you

  1613. and we confess

  1614. the sad way

1615. that we deal with your word so often.

  1616. Father, we are creatures

1617. of our culture and our time.

1618. The sinfulness of our heart

  1619. inclines us to want

  1620. quick moments with you

  1621. just like fast food.

  1622. We want everything

1623. to be resolved with you

  1624. in 20 minutes

  1625. like a sitcom.

  1626. And Father,

  1627. we confess that

  1628. in that,

  1629. so often we neglect

  1630. setting aside time

1631. to dwell in your presence,

1632. to abide in your word,

  1633. and allow your word

  1634. to abide in us.

  1635. Lord,

  1636. I pray that you

  1637. would give us

  1638. a willingness,

  1639. a commitment,

  1640. a desire

  1641. to be with you,

1642. to be intimate with you,

  1643. to know you,

  1644. to know your heart,

1645. and to be like your son.

  1646. Father,

1647. let this be a tool

  1648. that is used

  1649. according to your word

1650. to make us like Christ,

1651. that we would be filled

1652. with love for the Father

1653. and not love for the world.

1654. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1655. Amen.

  1656. This morning,

  1657. if you would like

1658. to come forward for prayer

1659. or if you would like

  1660. to come forward

  1661. to join the church

1662. or if there's anything else

1663. you'd like to come forward to,

1664. please feel free to do that.
