  1. Good morning.

  2. As we begin this morning, I'd like for you to imagine with me a sad situation.

  3. ! Imagine that within the past year, a group of people have left Maranatha.

  4. ! Because of growing tension over some theological views that they had come to believe.

  5. You see, as they had begun to consider Jesus, they began to ask questions like,

  6. Is Jesus really God's Son? Is Jesus really the Messiah?

  7. Is Jesus God? Is Jesus man?

  8. As their thinking on these theological issues began to unfold and tension within the church began to build,

  9. they decided that they would leave and go elsewhere.

  10. That in and of itself would be a sad situation, but it gets worse.

  11. Not only has this group left, but they've continued to be in contact with the people at Maranatha.

  12. They continue to try to influence those that are still here to consider their new enlightened form of Christianity,

  13. to question their beliefs.

  14. Well, that in itself would also be sad, but it gets worse from there.

  15. You find out that this group that's left has targeted some of your dearest friends.

  16. They've begun to talk with them and try to persuade them that they've missed it,

  17. that they haven't really believed the truth, that they've been deceived,

  18. and they need to consider these things about Jesus.

  19. Is he truly all that we make him out to be?

  20. And to try to influence them, they are constantly telling them,

  21. we must be right.

  22. Look at how blessed we are in our lives.

  23. God's given us all these material things.

  24. Well, your friends are beginning to question,

  25. are they really right?

  26. Do they really have a relationship with Jesus?

  27. Is their theology correct?

  28. Do what they think about Jesus, is it true?

  29. Is what they've thought was going on in their life and their relationship with God, is it true?

  30. And as you find out your friends are struggling with these questions,

  31. you're greatly concerned.

  32. And so you sit down and begin to write a letter out to them,

  33. to challenge them about what they truly believe,

  34. to encourage them to see God's work in their life

  35. and how he has worked faithfully in their lives in the past.

  36. And it's important for us to have this picture in our mind

  37. because that's exactly what is happening as John writes this letter to the church at Ephesus.

  38. That's the background.

  39. And John, as we have seen again and again as we've worked through the book of 1 John,

  40. John is writing to challenge them to say,

  41. this is true religion.

  42. This is what it truly means to walk with Jesus.

  43. And this is how God has been faithful in your life.

  44. Don't overlook these things.

  45. Don't be dissuaded.

  46. Don't be discouraged.

  47. Don't be led astray.

  48. And this morning, the passage we come to is no different than that.

  49. But before we begin, would you join me in prayer?

  50. Father, we do come before you.

  51. And we ask that your spirit would be at work in our lives.

  52. Father, we come with various situations in our lives, in our home, our families.

  53. We come with different struggles, with grief and loss, with struggling and suffering.

  54. And we come before you now and before your word.

  55. We ask that you would encourage us.

  56. That you would strengthen us.

  57. That you would convict us and change us.

  58. That you would move each one of us closer to Jesus today through your word.

  59. And it's in Jesus' name we ask these things and for his glory.

  60. Amen.

  61. This morning, we come to 1 John 4, verses 13 through 21.

    1 John 4:13–21

  62. 1 John 4, verses 13 through 21.

    1 John 4:13–21

  63. And it reads,

  64. And to believe the love that God has for us.

  65. God is love.

  66. And whoever abides in love abides in God.

  67. And God abides in them.

  68. By this is love perfected with us.

  69. So that we may have confidence for the day of judgment.

  70. Because as he is, so also are we in this world.

  71. There is no fear in love.

  72. But perfect love casts out fear.

  73. For fear has to do with punishment.

  74. And whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

  75. We love because he first loved us.

  76. If anyone says, I love God and hates his brother,

  77. he is a liar.

  78. For he who does not love his brother, whom he has seen,

  79. cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

  80. And this is the commandment we have from him.

  81. Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

  82. So this morning as we come to this section,

  83. this passage of scripture,

  84. the thing I'd like for us to see

  85. is that John is writing this

  86. to help the church at Ephesus

  87. know, know without a doubt,

  88. be sure that they are abiding in God.

  89. And that God is abiding in them.

  90. Be sure of their abiding relationship with God.

  91. And you may recognize verse 13 in a sense

  92. where it says,

  93. By this we know we abide in him and he in us

  94. because he has given us of his spirit.

  95. It sounds very similar to what we see

  96. in 1 John chapter 3, verses 23 and 24,

    1 John 3:23

  97. where it says,

  98. And this is his commandment

  99. that we believe in the name of his son, Jesus Christ,

  100. and love one another,

  101. just as he commanded us.

  102. Whoever keeps his commandments

  103. abides in God and God in him.

  104. And by this we know that he abides in us

  105. by the spirit whom he has given.

  106. And chapter 4, verse 13,

  107. and chapter 3, verse 24

  108. have a lot of similarities,

  109. but I want to point out to you

  110. the subtle yet important difference.

  111. In chapter 3,

  112. John tells them that we know this is true

  113. because he's given us his spirit.

  114. But in chapter 4,

  115. John says,

  116. We can know this is true

  117. because he has given us of his spirit.

  118. It's very little difference,

  119. but it's an important difference.

  120. It's not talking about the fact that

  121. here we have some assurance

  122. because we've gotten a part of the spirit.

  123. Like we could subdivide the Holy Spirit into pieces.

  124. It's not that we've gotten a part of the spirit,

  125. but it's about the product of the spirit

  126. in our lives.

  127. And so I think we'll see in this passage here,

  128. John trying to show us

  129. we can have assurance

  130. of our abiding relationship with God

  131. because of the work of the Holy Spirit,

  132. what the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives.

  133. And there's two main areas

  134. we're going to look at.

  135. But in doing this,

  136. I want us to try to make it practical

  137. and accomplish the same thing

  138. John is trying to do here.

  139. I hope for us to be encouraged this morning

  140. as we look at this,

  141. to be assured of our abiding relationship with God.

  142. And in order to do that practically,

  143. we're going to stop seven times

  144. throughout this sermon

  145. and ask some questions for reflection.

  146. Some things for you to just take a moment

  147. and ponder about your own life,

  148. hopefully so that we will be able to say

  149. with confidence at the end of the message today

  150. that we are assured

  151. that we are abiding in God.

  152. The first area we want to look at

  153. as far as the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives

  154. is that the Holy Spirit gives us true faith.

  155. The Holy Spirit gives us true faith.

  156. And we notice, starting in verse 14,

  157. that the Holy Spirit gives us faith in God's Word.

  158. It says,

  159. And we have seen and testify

  160. that the Father has sent His Son

  161. to be the Savior of the world.

  162. Now, John, again, is here referring back

  163. to himself and the other apostles,

  164. the first-hand witnesses

  165. about the work of Christ,

  166. even as he did at the beginning of 1 John.

  167. And he's saying,

  168. We bear testimony to these things,

  169. the testimony of the apostles.

  170. And I think what we can see in this

  171. is that the Holy Spirit gives us faith

  172. in the Word of God

  173. and makes it meaningful to us.

  174. Now, I want you to stop and consider for a second.

  175. Consider how amazing it is

  176. that the Word of God is meaningful to you.

  177. Okay?

  178. Now, this is a book that's thousands of years old.

  179. Thousands of years old.

  180. And it's full of miracles

  181. that many find unbelievable,

  182. including the creation of everything,

  183. a worldwide flood with a giant boat,

  184. the sun standing still in the sky,

  185. a man swallowed alive by a big fish,

  186. innumerable acts of a supreme being

  187. that truly are awesome,

  188. in the fullness of the word awesome,

  189. numerous prophecies,

  190. a virgin birth,

  191. a God that dies,

  192. as resurrections,

  193. a man that flies away into the clouds.

  194. Now,

  195. most books that you would read

  196. with material like that,

  197. you would easily just sort of classify as,

  198. well, that's entertaining,

  199. or that's mythological,

  200. or that's nice.

  201. But let's not stop there.

  202. Think about this.

  203. Not only does the Bible contain

  204. all of these miraculous stories,

  205. but the Bible is full of horrible stories.

  206. I mean,

  207. it's full of stories of murders,

  208. and rapes,

  209. incest,

  210. things that constantly are showing us

  211. again and again

  212. how wicked humanity is.

  213. I mean,

  214. honestly,

  215. as we look at it,

  216. we see even the majority of the heroes

  217. that we see in the Bible

  218. are capable again and again

  219. of the worst possible things.

  220. Basically,

  221. Scripture leaves no question

  222. about the fact that

  223. there's no disgusting or gross act

  224. that's beyond us.

  225. We're completely broken

  226. with no way to fix ourselves.

  227. We're dead

  228. with no way to heal ourselves.

  229. I mean,

  230. it's the opposite of a self-help book,

  231. isn't it?

  232. Right?

  233. Time and time again,

  234. as you read the Word,

  235. it cuts to the very core

  236. of who we are as people

  237. and says,

  238. there is no one that's good.

  239. Now,

  240. if you read any other book

  241. full of these kind of miracles,

  242. full of this kind of

  243. harsh truth about humanity,

  244. you would easily set it aside.

  245. But yet,

  246. through the work of the Holy Spirit

  247. in your life,

  248. the Bible is meaningful to you.

  249. Let's stop and consider

  250. these first set of reflective questions,

  251. okay?

  252. Do you believe the Bible

  253. is God's Word?

  254. Do you accept it

  255. as the very words of God?

  256. Do you believe

  257. it is completely trustworthy

  258. and reliable?

  259. Do you desire for the Bible

  260. to be the supreme authority

  261. in your life?

  262. If those things are true,

  263. if that's true

  264. in any measure in your life,

  265. you need to understand

  266. that is the work

  267. of the Holy Spirit

  268. in your life,

  269. that is an evidence

  270. that you are in

  271. an abiding relationship

  272. with God.

  273. If it was not

  274. for the faith given you

  275. by the Holy Spirit,

  276. the Bible would be

  277. no more meaningful

  278. to you than any other book.

  279. But wait,

  280. not only does the Holy Spirit

  281. make the Bible meaningful to us,

  282. but it makes it precious

  283. to us, right?

  284. It's not just a book,

  285. it's not just that we

  286. intellectually agree

  287. this is important

  288. or this is true,

  289. but it's precious to us.

  290. We long for it,

  291. we desire it,

  292. we find comfort in it,

  293. we find hope in it,

  294. we love it,

  295. we would be willing

  296. to die for it.

  297. That's the work

  298. of the Holy Spirit.

  299. Consider these questions.

  300. Reflection number two,

  301. do you cherish God's Word?

  302. Do you long for it?

  303. Do you savor it?

  304. Are you hiding it

  305. in your heart?

  306. Are you meditating

  307. on it with your mind?

  308. That's the work

  309. of the Holy Spirit

  310. in your life.

  311. It's an evidence

  312. that you are in

  313. an abiding relationship

  314. with God.

  315. Now, let me give you

  316. a little disclaimer here.

  317. I'm not asking

  318. or even implying

  319. that you never have

  320. dry times

  321. or there are never times

  322. that you feel

  323. more indifferent to

  324. or more distant from

  325. or too busy

  326. or neglect the Word of God.

  327. That's not my point at all.

  328. But as you look

  329. at your life

  330. and the direction

  331. of your life,

  332. looking back

  333. to where you've come from,

  334. looking forward

  335. to where you're going,

  336. do you see

  337. in your life

  338. a growth

  339. in your desire

  340. for God's Word,

  341. your love

  342. for God's Word,

  343. your hunger

  344. for God's Word?

  345. If you do,

  346. that is the work

  347. of the Holy Spirit

  348. in your life

  349. and an evidence

  350. that you are in

  351. an abiding relationship

  352. with God.

  353. So He gives us,

  354. the Holy Spirit

  355. gives us faith

  356. in God's Word.

  357. But He also gives us

  358. faith that Jesus

  359. is the Son of God.

  360. Jesus is the Son of God.

  361. In 1 John 4, 15,

  362. it says,

  363. whoever confesses

  364. that Jesus

  365. is the Son of God,

  366. God abides in Him

  367. and He in God.

  368. Now,

  369. the Holy Spirit

  370. not only makes

  371. God's Word meaningful

  372. to us,

  373. but the Holy Spirit

  374. makes Jesus

  375. meaningful to us.

  376. Again,

  377. stop and consider

  378. how amazing it is

  379. that Jesus

  380. is meaningful to you.

  381. According to the Internet,

  382. which knows everything,

  383. there are 4,300

  384. religions in the world.

  385. 4,300 religions

  386. in the world.

  387. And in each

  388. of those religions,

  389. there are people

  390. that started it,

  391. there are prophets,

  392. there are leaders,

  393. there are teachers,

  394. there are messiahs.

  395. And out of all of them,

  396. you don't believe

  397. in Muhammad

  398. or Buddha.

  399. You don't believe

  400. in Joseph Smith

  401. or Charles Russell.

  402. You don't believe

  403. in Mary Eddie Baker,

  404. Mary Baker Eddie

  405. or in L. Ron Hubbard.

  406. You believe in Jesus.

  407. You see,

  408. He has become

  409. meaningful to you.

  410. And notice,

  411. even in these verses,

  412. here we see

  413. Matthew chapter 24,

    Matthew 24:23

  414. verses 23 and 24.

  415. Jesus Himself

  416. warning us,

  417. He says,

  418. Then if anyone

  419. says to you,

  420. Look,

  421. here is the Christ,

  422. or there He is,

  423. do not believe it.

  424. For false Christs

  425. and false prophets

  426. will arise

  427. and perform great signs

  428. and wonders

  429. so as to lead astray,

  430. if possible,

  431. even the elect.

  432. Peter says it

  433. in 2 Peter chapter 2,

    2 Peter 2:1

  434. verses 1 and 2.

  435. But false prophets

  436. also arose

  437. among the people,

  438. just as there will be

  439. false teachers

  440. among you

  441. who will secretly

  442. bring in destructive

  443. heresies,

  444. even denying the Master

  445. who bought them,

  446. bringing upon themselves

  447. swift destruction,

  448. and many will follow

  449. their sensuality,

  450. and because of them

  451. the way of truth

  452. will be blasphemed.

  453. And even John,

  454. as we read earlier,

  455. 1 John chapter 4,

    1 John 4:1

  456. verse 1,

  457. where He said,

  458. Beloved,

  459. do not believe

  460. every spirit,

  461. but test the spirits

  462. to see whether

  463. they are from God,

  464. for many false prophets

  465. have gone out

  466. into the world.

  467. You see,

  468. our world is in

  469. no want for Messiahs.

  470. There's tons of them,

  471. thousands of them,

  472. throughout history.

  473. They come again

  474. and again and again,

  475. and yet,

  476. amongst all of those,

  477. Jesus,

  478. has been made

  479. meaningful to you.

  480. It's the work

  481. of the Holy Spirit.

  482. But again,

  483. as we also see,

  484. oh wait,

  485. I gotta pause

  486. for reflection number three.

  487. Reflection number three.

  488. Do you believe

  489. that Jesus

  490. is the Son of God?

  491. Do you believe

  492. that Jesus

  493. is 100% God

  494. and 100% man?

  495. Do you believe

  496. that Jesus

  497. lived a perfect,

  498. sinless,

  499. God-centered life?

  500. Do you believe

  501. that Jesus died

  502. to take the wrath

  503. of God

  504. that you justly deserve?

  505. Do you believe

  506. that Jesus rose again?

  507. Do you believe

  508. that Jesus will return?

  509. Do you believe

  510. those things?

  511. That is the work

  512. of the Holy Spirit

  513. in your life,

  514. bearing testimony

  515. that you are in

  516. an abiding relationship

  517. with God.

  518. But not only

  519. has the Holy Spirit

  520. made Jesus

  521. meaningful to us,

  522. but again,

  523. He's made Jesus

  524. precious to us,

  525. right?

  526. We love Jesus.

  527. We long for Jesus.

  528. We have a desire

  529. to be near Him,

  530. to be like Him.

  531. Our hearts

  532. are turned towards Him.

  533. As we read

  534. of His life,

  535. our hearts

  536. are stirred.

  537. As we read

  538. of His love,

  539. we're emotionally moved.

  540. We don't just

  541. intellectually acknowledge

  542. He was a great teacher,

  543. but our hearts

  544. are moved

  545. with love

  546. and passion

  547. towards Him.

  548. That is the work

  549. of the Holy Spirit.

  550. Reflection number four.

  551. Do you find yourself

  552. emotionally moved

  553. at the thought

  554. of Jesus?

  555. Can you honestly

  556. say that you love Him?

  557. Do you desire

  558. to grow

  559. in intimacy

  560. with Him?

  561. Do you speak

  562. to Him often?

  563. Do you find yourself

  564. desiring to be with Him

  565. and to be like Him?

  566. Are you overwhelmed

  567. with His glory?

  568. Again,

  569. if those things

  570. are true

  571. in your life,

  572. they are the work

  573. of the Holy Spirit.

  574. And it gives testimony,

  575. assurance,

  576. that you are

  577. in an abiding

  578. relationship with God.

  579. Now, again,

  580. I'll give you

  581. the same disclaimer.

  582. We're not saying

  583. that there aren't times

  584. when you are distant

  585. or there aren't times

  586. when you feel

  587. more disconnected

  588. or times when

  589. you don't feel

  590. as passionate

  591. about Christ,

  592. but looking at your life

  593. from where you were

  594. to where you're going,

  595. do you see growth?

  596. Are you growing

  597. in your faith

  598. in Christ?

  599. Are you growing

  600. in your love

  601. for Christ?

  602. Are you growing

  603. in your intimacy

  604. with Christ?

  605. If so,

  606. that's the work

  607. of the Holy Spirit

  608. in your life.

  609. So we see

  610. the Holy Spirit

  611. gives us faith

  612. in God's Word.

  613. It gives us faith

  614. to believe Jesus

  615. is the Son of God.

  616. It also gives us

  617. faith to accept

  618. God's love

  619. for us.

  620. Verse 16,

  621. So we have come

  622. to know

  623. and to believe

  624. the love

  625. that God has

  626. for us.

  627. God is love

  628. and whoever abides

  629. in love

  630. abides in God

  631. and God

  632. abides in him.

  633. Now,

  634. not only does

  635. the Holy Spirit

  636. give us faith

  637. in his Word

  638. and faith that

  639. Jesus is the Son of God,

  640. but it's

  641. the very source

  642. of our faith

  643. that allows us

  644. to accept

  645. the fact that

  646. God loves us.

  647. Now,

  648. I don't know

  649. about you,

  650. but I know

  651. personally,

  652. this is the area

  653. that's hardest

  654. for me.

  655. Being convinced

  656. of the fact

  657. that the Bible

  658. is God's Word,

  659. seeing in that

  660. all of his

  661. great glory,

  662. seeing in that

  663. my own sin,

  664. being convinced

  665. that Jesus

  666. is God's Son,

  667. looking at his life,

  668. how he walked

  669. in intimacy

  670. with the Father,

  671. how he was willing

  672. to give his life

  673. sacrificially

  674. for us,

  675. and then

  676. I look at me

  677. and I see

  678. how often

  679. I struggle,

  680. how often

  681. I'm still rebellious,

  682. how indifferent

  683. I can be to God,

  684. how much

  685. there is

  686. within me

  687. that pulls

  688. against

  689. the very things

  690. God longs for,

  691. and I think

  692. God's love

  693. for me

  694. truly is

  695. incomprehensible.

  696. it doesn't

  697. make sense.

  698. I don't

  699. understand

  700. grace.

  701. And

  702. truthfully,

  703. it is only

  704. through the work

  705. of the Holy Spirit

  706. that I could

  707. have faith

  708. to believe

  709. that God

  710. could love me.

  711. Reflection

  712. number five.

  713. Do you believe

  714. God really

  715. loves you?

  716. that he

  717. loves you

  718. in spite

  719. of all

  720. the reasons

  721. he shouldn't?

  722. Do you

  723. abide in

  724. that love,

  725. reminding

  726. yourself

  727. regularly

  728. of the

  729. truths

  730. of the

  731. gospel?

  732. Do you

  733. find your

  734. heart

  735. overflowing

  736. with thanksgiving

  737. because of

  738. God's love

  739. for you?

  740. Do you

  741. find God's

  742. love for you

  743. overflowing

  744. into the

  745. lives

  746. of others?

  747. If you

  748. do,

  749. that's the

  750. work of the

  751. Holy Spirit

  752. in your

  753. life.

  754. That's the

  755. evidence that

  756. you are in

  757. an abiding

  758. relationship

  759. with God.

  760. So we see

  761. the Holy Spirit

  762. giving us

  763. true faith,

  764. but I think

  765. we also

  766. see the

  767. Holy Spirit

  768. giving us

  769. true love.

  770. The Holy Spirit

  771. giving us

  772. true love.

  773. He gives us

  774. love as

  775. God's

  776. children.

  777. love as

  778. God's

  779. children.

  780. And that

  781. true love

  782. as God's

  783. children changes

  784. both our

  785. relationship to

  786. God and our

  787. reaction to

  788. God.

  789. And let's

  790. look at the

  791. relationship with

  792. God.

  793. Romans chapter

    Romans 8:15–17

  794. 8 verses

  795. 15 through

  796. 17 says

  797. this,

  798. For you did

  799. not receive

  800. the spirit of

  801. slavery to

  802. fall back

  803. into fear,

  804. but you have

  805. received the

  806. spirit of

  807. adoption as

  808. sons,

  809. by whom we

  810. cry,

  811. Abba,

  812. Father.

  813. The Spirit

  814. himself bears

  815. witness with

  816. our spirit that

  817. we are children

  818. of God,

  819. and if

  820. children,

  821. then heirs,

  822. heirs of

  823. God and

  824. fellow heirs

  825. with Christ,

  826. provided we

  827. suffer with him

  828. in order that

  829. we may also

  830. be glorified

  831. with him.

  832. Or Galatians

    Galatians 4:4–7

  833. chapter 4,

  834. verses 4

  835. through 7,

  836. where Paul

  837. writes,

  838. But when the

  839. fullness of

  840. time had

  841. come,

  842. God sent

  843. forth his

  844. son,

  845. born of

  846. woman,

  847. born under

  848. the law,

  849. to redeem

  850. those who

  851. were under

  852. the law,

  853. so that we

  854. might receive

  855. adoption as

  856. sons.

  857. And because

  858. you are sons,

  859. God has sent

  860. the spirit of

  861. his son into

  862. your hearts,

  863. crying,

  864. Abba,

  865. Father,

  866. so you are

  867. no longer a

  868. slave,

  869. but a son,

  870. and if a

  871. son,

  872. then an

  873. heir through

  874. God.

  875. You see,

  876. the Holy Spirit

  877. giving us true

  878. love as God's

  879. children changes

  880. our relationship

  881. with God.

  882. We're no longer

  883. enemies of God.

  884. We come into

  885. his presence as

  886. his children,

  887. and because of

  888. that, it also

  889. changes our

  890. reaction to

  891. God.

  892. Our reaction

  893. to God.

  894. And we see

  895. here in 1

  896. John 4,

  897. 17 and

  898. 18,

  899. that we

  900. no longer

  901. need to

  902. fear death,

  903. judgment,

  904. and eternity

  905. because we

  906. have been

  907. given this

  908. love as

  909. his children.

  910. It says,

  911. By this

  912. is love

  913. perfected with

  914. us,

  915. so that we

  916. may have

  917. confidence for

  918. the day of

  919. judgment.

  920. Because as

  921. he is,

  922. so also are

  923. we in this

  924. world.

  925. There is no

  926. fear in

  927. love,

  928. but perfect

  929. love casts

  930. out fear.

  931. For fear

  932. has to do

  933. with punishment,

  934. and whoever

  935. fears has not

  936. been perfected

  937. in love.

  938. So, because of

  939. the love that

  940. we've received

  941. as God's

  942. children, we

  943. no longer

  944. have to fear

  945. death.

  946. We no longer

  947. have to fear

  948. judgment to

  949. come.

  950. We no longer

  951. have to be

  952. fearful of

  953. eternity.

  954. We don't

  955. come before

  956. him as

  957. his enemies,

  958. facing his

  959. wrath, but we

  960. come into his

  961. presence as

  962. his children.

  963. We can run

  964. into his arms

  965. lovingly,

  966. seeking to be

  967. in the presence

  968. of our

  969. father that

  970. we've longed

  971. to be near.

  972. But I also

  973. think that

  974. this love as

  975. God's children

  976. enables us to

  977. handle the

  978. challenges that

  979. come every day,

  980. even now,

  981. without fear.

  982. I don't know if

  983. you're like me,

  984. but when things

  985. are hard, when

  986. I'm struggling,

  987. when I'm facing

  988. suffering or

  989. challenges,

  990. things seem to be

  991. falling apart,

  992. something seems to

  993. be broken or

  994. I'm grieving,

  995. somewhere in the

  996. back of my

  997. mind, there's

  998. always this

  999. thought, well,

  1000. here it is,

  1001. finally, God is

  1002. going to give me

  1003. what I deserve.

  1004. After all this

  1005. time, I know I

  1006. haven't been doing

  1007. what I should be

  1008. doing, and this

  1009. is it.

  1010. Finally, God's

  1011. going to give it

  1012. to me.

  1013. But that's not

  1014. what Scripture

  1015. tells us.

  1016. In Hebrews

    Hebrews 12:7–11

  1017. chapter 12,

  1018. verses 7

  1019. through 11,

  1020. it says this,

  1021. it is for

  1022. discipline that

  1023. you have to

  1024. endure.

  1025. God is treating

  1026. you as sons,

  1027. for what son is

  1028. there whom his

  1029. father does not

  1030. discipline?

  1031. If you are left

  1032. without discipline,

  1033. in which all have

  1034. participated,

  1035. then you are

  1036. illegitimate children

  1037. and not sons.

  1038. Besides this,

  1039. we have had

  1040. earthly fathers

  1041. who disciplined

  1042. us, and we

  1043. respected them.

  1044. shall we not

  1045. much more

  1046. be subject

  1047. to the father

  1048. of spirits

  1049. and live?

  1050. For they

  1051. disciplined us

  1052. for a short

  1053. time as it

  1054. seemed best

  1055. to them,

  1056. but he,

  1057. he disciplines

  1058. us for our

  1059. good that we

  1060. may share

  1061. in his

  1062. holiness.

  1063. For the moment,

  1064. all discipline

  1065. seems painful

  1066. rather than

  1067. pleasant,

  1068. but later it

  1069. yields the

  1070. peaceful fruit

  1071. of righteousness

  1072. to those

  1073. who have

  1074. been trained

  1075. by it.

  1076. So the

  1077. Holy Spirit

  1078. pouring out

  1079. this true

  1080. love into

  1081. our lives

  1082. as God's

  1083. children

  1084. changes how

  1085. we can react

  1086. to everything

  1087. we're going

  1088. through,

  1089. especially when

  1090. we face

  1091. trials,

  1092. when things

  1093. are struggling

  1094. in our lives,

  1095. when we are

  1096. suffering,

  1097. when we're

  1098. facing pain

  1099. or brokenness.

  1100. We don't

  1101. have to see

  1102. it as God's

  1103. wrath.

  1104. even if we

  1105. are guilty

  1106. of sin,

  1107. which of

  1108. course we

  1109. are,

  1110. but even

  1111. if we are,

  1112. we are told

  1113. here as his

  1114. children,

  1115. his discipline

  1116. is not in

  1117. anger but in

  1118. love.

  1119. He's at work

  1120. in us to

  1121. change us,

  1122. to give us

  1123. the gift of

  1124. holiness.

  1125. And so we

  1126. no longer need

  1127. to respond in

  1128. fear,

  1129. even when we

  1130. face these

  1131. crises,

  1132. these pains,

  1133. these struggles

  1134. in this life.

  1135. So reflection

  1136. number six.

  1137. Are you

  1138. living in

  1139. love as

  1140. God's child?

  1141. Are you

  1142. living in

  1143. love as

  1144. God's child?

  1145. Do you

  1146. delight in

  1147. running to

  1148. him with

  1149. every need,

  1150. challenge,

  1151. struggle?

  1152. Do you

  1153. find comfort

  1154. in knowing

  1155. that you

  1156. can boldly

  1157. approach the

  1158. throne?

  1159. Do you

  1160. find comfort

  1161. in knowing

  1162. that any

  1163. trial,

  1164. struggle,

  1165. suffering that

  1166. you face

  1167. now is

  1168. still an

  1169. expression of

  1170. his love

  1171. for you?

  1172. Are you

  1173. looking forward

  1174. to eternity

  1175. with him?

  1176. Again,

  1177. if these

  1178. things are

  1179. true in

  1180. your life,

  1181. it's the

  1182. work of

  1183. the Holy

  1184. Spirit in

  1185. your life.

  1186. It's the

  1187. assurance you

  1188. are in an

  1189. abiding

  1190. relationship

  1191. with God.

  1192. But not

  1193. only does

  1194. the Holy

  1195. Spirit give

  1196. us true

  1197. love as

  1198. God's

  1199. children,

  1200. but he

  1201. gives us

  1202. true love

  1203. for God's

  1204. children.

  1205. Look at

  1206. 1 John 4,

  1207. 19-21.

  1208. It says,

  1209. we love

  1210. because he

  1211. first loved

  1212. us.

  1213. If anyone

  1214. says,

  1215. I love

  1216. God and

  1217. hates his

  1218. brother,

  1219. he is a

  1220. liar.

  1221. For he

  1222. who does

  1223. not love

  1224. his brother

  1225. whom he

  1226. has seen

  1227. cannot love

  1228. God whom

  1229. he has not

  1230. seen.

  1231. And this

  1232. is the

  1233. commandment

  1234. we have

  1235. from him.

  1236. Whoever

  1237. loves God

  1238. must also

  1239. love his

  1240. brother.

  1241. And we've

  1242. seen time

  1243. and time

  1244. and time

  1245. again as

  1246. we've gone

  1247. through the

  1248. book of

  1249. 1 John.

  1250. John's

  1251. saying this.

  1252. You can

  1253. tell that

  1254. religion is

  1255. true.

  1256. The love

  1257. that those

  1258. people have

  1259. for the

  1260. children of

  1261. God.

  1262. We can

  1263. see their

  1264. faith is

  1265. real because

  1266. of the love

  1267. they have

  1268. for God's

  1269. children.

  1270. We can

  1271. see that

  1272. they really

  1273. are walking

  1274. with God

  1275. because they

  1276. will love

  1277. those whom

  1278. God loves.

  1279. He says it

  1280. again and

  1281. again and

  1282. again and

  1283. again and

  1284. there's still

  1285. more to come.

  1286. But it's

  1287. not really

  1288. surprising because

  1289. John's only

  1290. saying what

  1291. he's heard

  1292. Jesus say.

  1293. You know

  1294. Matthew

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  1295. chapter 22

  1296. 36 through

  1297. 40 where

  1298. Jesus is being

  1299. questioned about

  1300. the greatest

  1301. commandments.

  1302. He says

  1303. teacher which

  1304. is the greatest

  1305. commandment in

  1306. the law?

  1307. And Jesus

  1308. says to him

  1309. you shall

  1310. love the

  1311. Lord your

  1312. God with

  1313. all your

  1314. heart with

  1315. all your

  1316. soul with

  1317. all your

  1318. mind.

  1319. This is the

  1320. great and

  1321. first commandment

  1322. and the

  1323. second is like

  1324. it.

  1325. You shall

  1326. love your

  1327. neighbor as

  1328. yourself.

  1329. On these

  1330. two commandments

  1331. depend all

  1332. the law and

  1333. the prophets.

  1334. Or in

  1335. John 15 where

  1336. he's speaking

  1337. to his

  1338. disciples he

  1339. says this is

  1340. my commandment

  1341. that you

  1342. love one

  1343. another as

  1344. I have

  1345. loved you.

  1346. Greater

  1347. love has

  1348. no one than

  1349. this that

  1350. someone lay

  1351. down his

  1352. life for

  1353. his friends.

  1354. Paul talks

  1355. about it in

  1356. Romans 12

  1357. 10.

  1358. Love one

  1359. another with

  1360. brotherly

  1361. affection.

  1362. Outdo one

  1363. another in

  1364. showing honor.

  1365. Galatians 5

  1366. 13-15 where

  1367. he says for

  1368. you are called

  1369. to freedom

  1370. brothers.

  1371. Only do not

  1372. use your

  1373. freedom as

  1374. an opportunity

  1375. for the

  1376. flesh but

  1377. through love

  1378. serve one

  1379. another.

  1380. For the

  1381. whole law

  1382. is fulfilled

  1383. in one

  1384. word.

  1385. You shall

  1386. love your

  1387. neighbor as

  1388. yourself.

  1389. But if you

  1390. bite and

  1391. devour one

  1392. another watch

  1393. out that you

  1394. are not

  1395. consumed by

  1396. one another.

  1397. love for

  1398. God's children

  1399. but love

  1400. for God's

  1401. children.

  1402. So

  1403. reflection

  1404. seven.

  1405. Ask yourself

  1406. these questions.

  1407. Do you

  1408. find yourself

  1409. growing in

  1410. love for

  1411. God's

  1412. children?

  1413. When you

  1414. act in

  1415. unloving

  1416. ways are

  1417. you saddened

  1418. and do you

  1419. actively seek

  1420. forgiveness and

  1421. commit to

  1422. change in

  1423. those areas?

  1424. Are you

  1425. actively

  1426. evolved in

  1427. the life of

  1428. the church in

  1429. order to love,

  1430. serve,

  1431. encourage,

  1432. and care for

  1433. your brothers

  1434. and sisters in

  1435. Christ?

  1436. Are you

  1437. seeking to

  1438. actively outdo

  1439. one another in

  1440. showing honor?

  1441. Intentionally

  1442. looking for ways

  1443. to show love,

  1444. care, and

  1445. concern to

  1446. those in the

  1447. church?

  1448. Are you

  1449. sacrificing of

  1450. your time,

  1451. your money,

  1452. your rights,

  1453. in order to

  1454. show God's

  1455. love to his

  1456. children?

  1457. If those

  1458. things are true

  1459. in your

  1460. life,

  1461. guess what?

  1462. It's the

  1463. work of the

  1464. Holy Spirit.

  1465. It's evidence

  1466. that you are

  1467. in an

  1468. abiding

  1469. relationship

  1470. with God.

  1471. Now,

  1472. it's interesting,

  1473. I got to

  1474. this point and

  1475. I realized,

  1476. really,

  1477. we're just

  1478. talking about

  1479. the gospel,

  1480. aren't we?

  1481. I mean,

  1482. think about it.

  1483. The Holy Spirit

  1484. giving us faith

  1485. to believe and

  1486. cherish God's

  1487. word,

  1488. seeing in it

  1489. God's great

  1490. glory in our

  1491. own sin,

  1492. the Holy Spirit

  1493. giving us faith

  1494. to believe

  1495. that Jesus

  1496. is the Son

  1497. of God,

  1498. the Savior

  1499. of the world,

  1500. giving us

  1501. faith to

  1502. believe that

  1503. God loves

  1504. us in spite

  1505. of our

  1506. sinfulness,

  1507. and that he's

  1508. made us his

  1509. own children

  1510. through the

  1511. work of

  1512. Christ on

  1513. the cross,

  1514. and that from

  1515. that everything

  1516. in our lives

  1517. change,

  1518. right?

  1519. Our relationship

  1520. to God

  1521. changes,

  1522. our reaction

  1523. to God

  1524. changes,

  1525. and our

  1526. relationship

  1527. and how we

  1528. deal with

  1529. each other

  1530. changes,

  1531. especially

  1532. those who

  1533. are our

  1534. brothers and

  1535. sisters in

  1536. Christ.

  1537. Really,

  1538. once again,

  1539. we just have

  1540. the gospel

  1541. presented here.

  1542. So,

  1543. here we are.

  1544. I hope by

  1545. this point,

  1546. everyone here

  1547. is at one

  1548. of two

  1549. places.

  1550. I hope the

  1551. majority of

  1552. you are able

  1553. to look at

  1554. how the

  1555. Holy Spirit

  1556. is at work

  1557. in your life,

  1558. how he's

  1559. given you

  1560. true faith

  1561. in God's

  1562. word,

  1563. true faith

  1564. in who

  1565. Jesus is,

  1566. and in God's

  1567. love for you.

  1568. I hope that

  1569. you can see

  1570. his true

  1571. love at work

  1572. in your life

  1573. as you come

  1574. to realize

  1575. his love

  1576. for you

  1577. as his

  1578. children,

  1579. and as your

  1580. love is

  1581. growing for

  1582. the other

  1583. children of

  1584. God,

  1585. and that as

  1586. you see the

  1587. Holy Spirit

  1588. doing that,

  1589. that you can

  1590. be encouraged,

  1591. that today

  1592. you can be

  1593. assured,

  1594. you can know

  1595. for sure

  1596. that you are

  1597. in an abiding

  1598. relationship with

  1599. God.

  1600. You are abiding

  1601. in God,

  1602. and God

  1603. is abiding

  1604. in you

  1605. now.

  1606. If any of

  1607. you are like

  1608. me,

  1609. I know,

  1610. for me,

  1611. it's much

  1612. easier to

  1613. look at

  1614. what's not

  1615. done than

  1616. at what

  1617. the Holy

  1618. Spirit has

  1619. already done.

  1620. And so

  1621. for you,

  1622. I want to

  1623. leave you

  1624. with this

  1625. quote,

  1626. or maybe

  1627. I should

  1628. say for

  1629. us,

  1630. by John

  1631. Newton.

  1632. John

  1633. Newton

  1634. says,

  1635. I am

  1636. not what

  1637. I ought

  1638. to be.

  1639. I am

  1640. not what

  1641. I want

  1642. to be.

  1643. I am

  1644. not what

  1645. I hope

  1646. to be

  1647. in another

  1648. world,

  1649. but still,

  1650. I am

  1651. not what

  1652. I once

  1653. used to

  1654. be.

  1655. And by

  1656. the grace

  1657. of God,

  1658. I am

  1659. what I

  1660. am.

  1661. And I

  1662. hope that

  1663. you can

  1664. take time

  1665. today and

  1666. rejoice in

  1667. the Holy

  1668. Spirit's work

  1669. in your life,

  1670. and rejoice

  1671. in God's

  1672. faithfulness to

  1673. you,

  1674. be able to

  1675. rejoice in

  1676. the assurance

  1677. that you are

  1678. in an abiding

  1679. relationship

  1680. with God,

  1681. and thank

  1682. him,

  1683. and rejoice

  1684. over that.

  1685. But now

  1686. maybe some

  1687. of you here

  1688. have heard

  1689. all these

  1690. questions,

  1691. and it

  1692. creates some

  1693. doubt for

  1694. you.

  1695. Maybe even

  1696. it's clear

  1697. to you that

  1698. you are not

  1699. in an abiding

  1700. relationship

  1701. with God.

  1702. you look

  1703. at all of

  1704. these things

  1705. and you

  1706. realize that

  1707. you are not

  1708. able to

  1709. have some

  1710. assurance

  1711. that the

  1712. Holy Spirit

  1713. is at work

  1714. in your

  1715. life.

  1716. If by chance

  1717. you fall

  1718. into that

  1719. category,

  1720. let me

  1721. challenge you

  1722. even today

  1723. to cry out

  1724. to Jesus

  1725. for mercy,

  1726. for grace,

  1727. to change,

  1728. because the

  1729. truth is

  1730. the condition

  1731. of your

  1732. eternal soul

  1733. is at

  1734. stake.

  1735. So this

  1736. morning,

  1737. if you have

  1738. questions,

  1739. if you have

  1740. doubts,

  1741. if you are

  1742. even sure

  1743. that you

  1744. don't have

  1745. a relationship

  1746. with God,

  1747. let me

  1748. encourage you.

  1749. We're going

  1750. to have a

  1751. prayer,

  1752. and it's

  1753. going to be

  1754. up on the

  1755. screen,

  1756. and you

  1757. can follow

  1758. along,

  1759. but I'll

  1760. pray it.

  1761. You just

  1762. pray silently,

  1763. and I

  1764. would beg

  1765. you,

  1766. start a

  1767. relationship

  1768. with God

  1769. today.

  1770. Let's

  1771. pray.

  1772. Oh,

  1773. merciful God,

  1774. I realize

  1775. even now

  1776. that I

  1777. don't see

  1778. in my

  1779. life the

  1780. evidence

  1781. of your

  1782. abiding

  1783. presence,

  1784. or the

  1785. fruit of

  1786. the Holy

  1787. Spirit at

  1788. work in

  1789. me.

  1790. Instead,

  1791. I see a

  1792. faith in

  1793. myself,

  1794. and a

  1795. self-centered

  1796. life,

  1797. and I

  1798. realize that

  1799. I cannot

  1800. change

  1801. without you

  1802. working in

  1803. me.

  1804. so even

  1805. now,

  1806. I humbly

  1807. ask that

  1808. you would

  1809. save me,

  1810. that by

  1811. your Spirit

  1812. you would

  1813. open my

  1814. eyes to

  1815. clearly see

  1816. the beauty

  1817. of your

  1818. word,

  1819. the glory

  1820. of your

  1821. Son Jesus,

  1822. and the

  1823. love that

  1824. you offer

  1825. me because

  1826. of his

  1827. death in

  1828. my place.

  1829. Please

  1830. give me a

  1831. clean heart

  1832. and a

  1833. spirit that

  1834. is willing

  1835. to turn

  1836. away from

  1837. self-centered

  1838. living and

  1839. live a

  1840. Christ-centered

  1841. life of

  1842. true love

  1843. for you,

  1844. and for

  1845. your

  1846. children.

  1847. Fill me

  1848. with joy

  1849. and peace

  1850. as I come

  1851. to accept

  1852. the love

  1853. that you

  1854. offer me.

  1855. From this

  1856. day on,

  1857. I will never

  1858. consider myself

  1859. to be my

  1860. own,

  1861. but to be

  1862. yours and

  1863. to surrender

  1864. my life to

  1865. Jesus as

  1866. my Savior

  1867. and my

  1868. King.

  1869. And for

  1870. his glory

  1871. and in

  1872. his name,

  1873. I ask

  1874. these things.

  1875. Amen.

  1876. Amen.
