  1. Well, a couple of years ago, I was reading a biography about Bonhoeffer.

  2. ! I'm not sure if any of you have read that book. It's by Eric Metaxas. It's about 500-600

  3. ! And I'm not much of a reader, but I thought, you know, maybe this is worth a shot and I'll

  4. tackle this book and see how it goes. And what was interesting to me as I read through this

  5. book, there was almost a sense in which Bonhoeffer became a close friend. There was, Eric did

  6. such a good job at kind of leading the reader through the story of this man and his heart

  7. for people and his willingness to risk much for the sake of Christ and for the sake of

  8. the church and all of the struggles that he went through and the churches that he helped

  9. to establish and the people he was able to encourage and the challenges that he faced.

  10. And you knew it was coming. You knew at the end of this story that it was going to end

  11. in the martyrdom of this man. And the closer and closer you got to the end of this book,

  12. the slower and slower my pace became because I just didn't want to say goodbye. He had really

  13. become a close friend. And this morning we come to the end of this letter in 1 John. And it's

  14. my prayer that God has done for you what he has done for me and that Jesus has become sweeter

  15. through the study of 1 John. And that the beloved apostle John has become a dear friend. Now,

  16. fortunately, we don't have to say goodbye to this friend because we know that next week we're going

  17. to, even though we're going to be in a different part of Scripture, we're going to be seeing and

  18. coming to appreciate the same main character, the same person who is central in every part of the

  19. Scripture from Genesis to Revelation. We'll see the story of God come to light for us again next week.

  20. And so even though we're wrapping up our study in 1 John, really the same themes and the same truths

  21. that we have been studying throughout our series in 1 John will continue in our study as we move in

  22. to 1 Thessalonians. Last Sunday I had the opportunity of teaching the junior high and high school.

  23. And I asked one of my kids afterwards, so what did you think? How did it go? And they said to me,

  24. well, it was the same thing that Caleb taught on Wednesday. I mean...

  25. So Caleb's doing a great job. I just have appreciated his ministry. But I want to let you know,

  26. that is the truth. No matter where we go in the Scripture, whether we're in the minor prophets,

  27. you know, Hosea and Joel and Amos and Obadiah, what do they have to add to the story? Well,

  28. let me tell you, they have to add much to the story because it's all about God. From start to finish,

  29. the story is a story about God. And so as we come to the Scripture, no matter where we are,

  30. whether we're teaching about the life of David or teaching about the life of Joseph or we're in

  31. the New Testament, we're learning about the abiding life, we're learning the story about God

  32. and how to have that sweet fellowship with Him that He craves for us. Do you realize that God

  33. desires and craves fellowship with you? He craves it so much that He sent Jesus Christ to this

  34. earth, to die for us, to bridge the fellowship gap, the sin gap that disrupts fellowship with Him.

  35. He bridged that gap to make salvation possible, to make fellowship possible, to make joy,

  36. abounding joy possible for you, and to connect us not only to Christ, but to connect us to one another.

  37. It really is a remarkable story and it's been encouraging to my own heart as we walk through

  38. the study of 1 John and to pick up the same themes as we look again at 1 Thessalonians and

  39. we're going to be moving through that in the coming weeks. So in the closing of our time with 1 John,

  40. let me invite you to take your Bibles if you would please, as we open up to 1 John chapter 5.

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  41. We're going to begin in verse 6 and we're going to move to the end of the chapter,

  42. taking this piece by piece. Now maybe you're asking the question, how does this relate to

  43. the communion service that we're going to be having here towards the end of our time together?

  44. And I want to help make that connection. Some of you have probably already made that connection

  45. or already very aware, but for those of you who have not made the connection,

  46. I want us to realize that if the Bible is the story about God, whether we're in 1 Corinthians chapter 11,

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  47. or whether we're in the Gospels, or whether we're in 1 John, or anywhere else in the Bible for that

  48. matter, because it's the story about God, it's the story of redemption. It's the story of salvation.

  49. It's the message of God's rescue. And so it's really great for me to be able to see the story of God,

  50. even in unique places, and to appreciate that as we go to those places. And so this morning,

  51. as we're in 1 John chapter 5, I want us to see that the message of the story of Christ is the same.

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  52. It's the story of his redemption for us, his body, and his blood, and his price that he paid for us

  53. to bridge the gap for salvation and fellowship with him.

  54. As we look at this passage this morning, there's going to be something that stands out and is

  55. inescapable for us as we look at these verses. And I hope that as you read the Scripture,

  56. it's your habit to read with a pen, not only so that you can underline and highlight the things that are

  57. important and that stand out to you, but so that you can take notes along the way.

  58. Well, this might be a good opportunity for you to continue that practice, because what I want to

  59. point out to you in the first part, or in these concluding words, is the certainty that we have

  60. as those who abide in Christ. There is certainty in the Christian life.

  61. Notice in verses 6 through 12, there is a recurring word that we're going to see over and over and over

  62. again. It's the word testify. We see that word there at the very beginning of verse 6.

  63. This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by the water only, but by the water and the blood.

  64. And the Spirit is the one who testifies.

  65. In verse 7, we find there are three that testify. In verse 8, we see these three agree, meaning in the

  66. mouth of two or three witnesses, a thing will be established. They're testifying. In verse 10, we'll see

  67. whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. In verse 11, and this is the testimony.

  68. Then if we, as we look at verses 13 to 21, he shifts from this use of the word testimony to a use of a word

  69. to know. In verse 13, he says, I write these things to you who believe, that you may know. And I would

  70. encourage you to underline that you may know. Verse 14, and this is the confidence.

  71. In verse 15, and if we know, then we know that we have. Then in verse 18, we know. And in verse 20,

  72. and we know, so that we may know. It is inescapable what John is trying to get at in these remaining

  73. verses of his little letter to the church of Ephesus. There is something that can be known,

  74. that can be examined, that can be rested on, and you can have confidence in the truths that he's been

  75. articulating throughout this little letter. Over this past week, we had the privilege as a family,

  76. we do Netflix from time to time. And my wife found a little movie called The Case for Christ.

  77. It's really the story of Lee Strobel. And if you know anything about his story, he was an investigative

  78. reporter for the Chicago Tribune. He was an atheist, and he was adamant about the fact that there was not

  79. a deity that existed. Well, through some circumstances that took place in his family,

  80. namely, his family was having dinner, and his daughter began to choke on some food.

  81. And by God's providence, a lady came to help clear the food from the little girl's throat,

  82. and lo and behold, she was a Christian. And through this interaction that was taking place between

  83. this lady and her committed testimony to the gospel, and suggesting that this did not happen

  84. by circumstance, but this was a divine appointment, the wife began to take some interest,

  85. and went to church, and came and essentially committed her life to Christ.

  86. Christ. Well, Lee was not interested in this taking place in his family, and so he determined

  87. that as an investigative reporter, he was going to find the facts that would disprove Christianity.

  88. One of his Christian co-workers says, well, if you're going to take Christianity out, you need to go

  89. to the heart of Christianity, and that is the resurrection. So he spent the next several months trying to

  90. disprove the resurrection, and through the course of that process, came to understand that the evidence

  91. was overwhelming. And through that process, God led him to faith in Christ. You see, this world would

  92. have us believe that those who are Christians are just living by blind faith. There's just ignorance in

  93. them. They've abandoned all rational thinking. They're not thinking and evaluating the facts as they are,

  94. the things that you can touch and see and evaluate and examine up close. But John wants us to understand

  95. that the Christian life, although it is a life of faith, it is also a life of proof. It's a life of evidence.

  96. It's a life that the criteria can stack up and help us to help to demonstrate that what we believe

  97. really does have substance. There can be certainty in the Christian life. And so this passage this morning

  98. is a passage of encouragement, really. There are at least five things that I see in this passage

  99. that we can take comfort in and to know that God has established these truths,

  100. and we can have certainty and confidence about these truths.

  101. I think I'm going to do something a little different this morning. I usually spend the bulk of my time on

  102. point number one, and then we don't have time to get to the others. I hear some chuckling.

  103. I, I, I, I, guilty as charged, I, I understand. So we're, we're going to, we're going to move through

  104. point number one. We're going to go two, three, four, and five, okay? So stick with me. And then we'll go

  105. back to point one because point one really helps to fill out our time of communion. So pray for me in

  106. this process so that we can really get to the, the real heart of, of what this is, is talking about this

  107. morning. The first point, though, I, I want to just put it there for you so that you have it in your

  108. reservoir. We'll come back to it in just a moment. But, but the first point that we see here in, in verses

  109. 6 through 10, is that we can have certainty about Jesus Christ. There is no question in this letter

  110. who is the central figure of John's attention. He begins this whole letter with, with this

  111. exuberance and enthusiasm about the person of Christ. He says, we, we have seen him. We've, we've heard him.

  112. We've, we've touched him. We, we've spent time with him. We've, we've listened to his message and, and we

  113. are commending him to you. Make no mistake about it. There is nothing that matters more than Jesus

  114. Christ. He, he begins with that and he finishes with that very, very idea. We, we've seen it throughout

  115. chapter 4. We've seen it here at the beginning of chapter 5. He finishes with that thought here in

  116. chapter 5. He wants you to understand that you can be certain about Jesus Christ. And we'll look at

  117. those witnesses towards the end of our message this morning. Point number two. That was the fastest

  118. point number one we've ever had, huh? All right. Point number two. We're, we're, we're going to pick this

  119. up here in verse 11. And John wants us to recognize that if there is certainty about Jesus Christ,

  120. there is also certainty about the future. Certainty about the future. Notice what it says here,

  121. beginning in verse 11. And this is the testimony, again, that key word, that God gave us eternal,

  122. eternal life. And this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life. Whoever does not have the Son of God

  123. does not have life. Can you hear the heart of this beloved apostle pleading with his audience in the

  124. midst of difficulty that they're experiencing? Those that had abandoned this church, he, he alludes to them in chapter 2. And he says they were not of us because they, they went away from us. The, the turmoil that was taking place in, in this city of Ephesus and for this specific church. He wants this church to understand that however uncertain their circumstances are in the moment,

  125. there is certainty about the future. There is certainty about eternal life.

  126. There is certainty about eternal life. I write these things that you may know that you have eternal life.

  127. life, he says in chapter 5, verse 13. Jesus' death and resurrection guarantees future life for all of those who are in Christ Jesus.

  128. After all, that is why Jesus came in the first place. We all know John 3, 16.

  129. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

  130. Jesus came so that you could have hope and confidence about the future.

  131. And if there is confidence about the future,

  132. what else matters?

  133. What else is there?

  134. If you know that the difficulties that you're facing are only temporary,

  135. if you know the struggles and the conflicts that,

  136. that you are experiencing right now are, are just superficial,

  137. if you recognize that the, the challenges that you face are only momentary,

  138. but there is a future hope in heaven,

  139. there is eternal life with God,

  140. nothing else begins to matter.

  141. John wants his, his congregation,

  142. these, these people that he has spent so much time shepherding and pastoring

  143. to know,

  144. if you know him,

  145. you know everything that matters.

  146. You can have confidence about the future.

  147. And in this expression,

  148. he is, he is pleading with,

  149. with the rest,

  150. those who don't know Jesus,

  151. if you know him,

  152. you can have eternal life as well.

  153. So many during Jesus's ministry were,

  154. were interested in this question.

  155. We see the rich young ruler in Matthew chapter 19,

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  156. who, who came to Jesus and said,

  157. good teacher,

  158. what good thing shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

  159. And then in Luke chapter 10,

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  160. the lawyer that comes and asks a similar question,

  161. a lawyer stands up and,

  162. and tested him saying,

  163. teacher,

  164. what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

  165. This is the question of anyone who is really interested in what's coming in the future.

  166. Any religious institution,

  167. any orientation of,

  168. of spirituality has the future and,

  169. and the,

  170. the eternal life as its final objective.

  171. But only those who are in Christ can experience it.

  172. Jesus says,

  173. I am the way,

  174. the truth,

  175. and the life.

  176. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  177. You want life?

  178. You must come through the author of life,

  179. the initiator of life,

  180. not only physical life,

  181. but spiritual life.

  182. Jesus came to bring life.

  183. We see that in John chapter 10,

    John 10:10

  184. verse 10.

  185. He says,

  186. I have come

  187. that they might have life

  188. and that they might have it abundantly.

  189. And those apart from Christ

  190. will only know death.

  191. Romans chapter 6, 23,

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  192. for the wages of sin is death,

  193. but the gift of God is eternal life

  194. through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  195. The question for us this morning

  196. is do you know Jesus Christ?

  197. And if you know him

  198. and have embraced him as Savior,

  199. then you have the joy of eternal life.

  200. You see,

  201. the resurrection of Christ

  202. changes everything for us.

  203. Paul picks up this theme

  204. in 1 Corinthians chapter 15.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  205. And basically,

  206. he recounts the significance

  207. of the resurrection.

  208. He says,

  209. it is the resurrection

  210. that gives purpose to our message.

  211. In 1 Corinthians 15, 14,

  212. he says,

  213. if Christ has not been raised,

  214. then our preaching is in vain.

  215. It is also the resurrection

  216. that gives our faith substance.

  217. In 1 Corinthians 15,

    1 Corinthians 15:14

  218. verse 14, it says,

  219. if Christ has not been raised,

  220. then our faith is in vain.

  221. It is also the resurrection

  222. that activates our obedience.

  223. In verse 17, he says,

  224. if Christ has not been raised,

  225. then you are still in your sins.

  226. And it is the resurrection

  227. that gives us hope.

  228. for the future.

  229. In 1 Corinthians 15, verse 19,

    1 Corinthians 15:19

  230. he says,

  231. if in Christ we have hope

  232. in this life only,

  233. we are of people most to be pitied.

  234. But, in fact,

  235. Christ has been raised from the dead,

  236. the firstborn of those

  237. who have fallen asleep.

  238. Because of Christ's resurrection life,

  239. we who are in Christ

  240. will also experience

  241. the life that he has to give.

  242. What hope?

  243. What certainty?

  244. What certainty?

  245. What certainty?

  246. The certainty of Christ's resurrection

  247. leads to certainty

  248. of future life for those

  249. who are in Christ.

  250. And we come to our next point.

  251. Not only certainty,

  252. not only certainty

  253. about the future,

  254. but certainty about answered prayer.

  255. We see that in verses 14 to 17.

  256. Here's what it says.

  257. And this is the confidence

  258. that we have towards him,

  259. that if we ask anything

  260. according to his will,

  261. he hears us.

  262. And if we know that he hears us

  263. in whatever we ask,

  264. we know that we have the request

  265. that we have asked of him.

  266. This is the confidence,

  267. John says.

  268. If you are in relationship,

  269. an abiding relationship with Christ,

  270. then Christ will hear your prayers.

  271. And if you are in a relationship with Christ,

  272. an abiding relationship with him,

  273. he not only hears your prayers,

  274. but he fills that out

  275. and defines what his hearing actually means.

  276. Notice,

  277. how does John describe the hearing?

  278. If he hears us in whatever we ask,

  279. we know that we have the request

  280. that we have asked of him.

  281. That's what it means when God hears.

  282. Time out.

  283. That is not my experience.

  284. Is that your experience?

  285. Everything we ask,

  286. we receive of him?

  287. Okay, so then there must be

  288. something going on here.

  289. There must be a dynamic

  290. that we need to begin to understand

  291. when John is describing

  292. the asking and the praying,

  293. the hearing and receiving.

  294. What is taking place?

  295. Remember,

  296. as we have introduced this series

  297. and as we have been talking about this series

  298. through the past couple of months,

  299. we've mentioned that this is really

  300. just an exposition of the upper room discourse.

  301. Okay?

  302. So it shouldn't be any surprise to you

  303. to know that Jesus,

  304. on at least four occasions,

  305. actually uses the exact same phrase.

  306. In John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  307. I would just encourage you,

  308. why don't you just keep your finger

  309. for a moment in 1 John chapter 5

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  310. and turn with me

  311. to John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  312. so you can see this

  313. and maybe even underline it for yourself.

  314. John 14,

    John 14:13

  315. verses 13 and 14.

  316. Whatever you ask in my name,

  317. this I will do,

  318. that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

  319. if you ask me anything in my name,

  320. I will do it.

  321. Now move to chapter 15,

  322. verses 7 and 8.

  323. If you abide in me

  324. and my words abide in you,

  325. ask whatever you wish

  326. and it will be done for you.

  327. By this my Father is glorified

  328. that you bear much fruit

  329. and so prove to be my disciples.

  330. Now chapter 15,

  331. verses 16 and 17.

  332. You did not choose me,

  333. but I chose you

  334. and appointed you

  335. that you should go and bear fruit

  336. and that your fruit should abide

  337. so that whatever you ask the Father

  338. in my name,

  339. he may give it to you.

  340. These things I command you

  341. so that you will love one another.

  342. And then chapter 16,

  343. verses 23 and 24.

  344. Chapter 16,

  345. verses 23 and 24.

  346. In that day,

  347. you will ask nothing of me.

  348. Truly, truly,

  349. I say to you,

  350. whatever you ask of the Father

  351. in my name,

  352. he will give it to you.

  353. Until now,

  354. you have asked nothing in my name.

  355. Ask,

  356. and you will receive

  357. that your joy may be full.

  358. What in the world is going on here?

  359. What in the world

  360. is Jesus trying to commend

  361. to his disciples?

  362. Is there a magic formula?

  363. Is there a process

  364. that we need to go through

  365. in order to get this answer

  366. from God that we're looking for?

  367. Well, if you were here last week,

  368. you know the answer to that question

  369. is no,

  370. there's not a magic formula.

  371. That's the old way of doing life.

  372. But we've been called to the new way.

  373. The new way that sets us free

  374. from the pressure of this world

  375. and the pressure of performance

  376. and responsibility.

  377. But what we're talking about here

  378. is in conjunction

  379. with who Jesus is himself.

  380. And in conjunction

  381. with the abiding life

  382. that we've been called to.

  383. Notice Jesus points to that

  384. at least a couple of times

  385. throughout this section.

  386. and also says,

  387. if you pray anything

  388. or ask anything in my name,

  389. then I will do it.

  390. What in the world

  391. is he talking about?

  392. It begins and ends with Jesus.

  393. That's the answer.

  394. The abiding life

  395. out of which flows

  396. forgiveness

  397. and cleansing

  398. and obedience

  399. and love

  400. and confidence

  401. satisfaction

  402. and fellowship

  403. boldness

  404. in his presence

  405. endurance

  406. in the Christian life

  407. hope

  408. and joy

  409. and clarity

  410. and life.

  411. What else

  412. is there

  413. to be had?

  414. It is all found

  415. in him.

  416. And so if we

  417. as we learn

  418. to be satisfied

  419. in him

  420. and as we are praying

  421. for the things

  422. that are oriented

  423. towards finding

  424. sufficiency

  425. in Christ

  426. seeking his glory

  427. strengthening his body

  428. building his kingdom

  429. then we will find

  430. that all of our hopes

  431. and dreams

  432. and prayers

  433. will be answered

  434. in the power

  435. of Christ.

  436. Because as our

  437. orientation

  438. is moving

  439. in the direction

  440. of being satisfied

  441. in him

  442. and looking to him

  443. for his glory

  444. and looking for him

  445. for his strength

  446. and seeking

  447. to be about

  448. his purposes

  449. then nothing else

  450. matters.

  451. And he is delighted

  452. to answer those prayers

  453. because those are

  454. the things

  455. that he wants

  456. to accomplish

  457. in and through us.

  458. Perhaps the best

  459. example of this

  460. is Paul.

  461. Paul

  462. when he prays

  463. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  464. chapter 12

  465. he says

  466. remember

  467. he has this

  468. thorn in the flesh

  469. right?

  470. And he prays

  471. three times

  472. that God

  473. would take it away

  474. and the answer

  475. at least

  476. in that specific

  477. request was no.

  478. My grace

  479. is sufficient

  480. for you

  481. for my power

  482. is made perfect

  483. in weakness.

  484. Now listen

  485. that was not

  486. a no answer

  487. that was a yes

  488. answer.

  489. That was a yes

  490. answer because

  491. at the heart

  492. what Paul wanted

  493. was for the glory

  494. of God

  495. to be known

  496. and for the kingdom

  497. of God

  498. to be advanced

  499. and the power

  500. of God

  501. working through

  502. the life

  503. of Paul

  504. to be obvious.

  505. And God says

  506. Paul

  507. you want

  508. the right things.

  509. The only way

  510. this can happen

  511. the best way

  512. this can happen

  513. is to strip you

  514. of your personal

  515. strength

  516. so I can rush

  517. in with divine

  518. strength.

  519. This is my

  520. yes

  521. yes

  522. not a no.

  523. As the author

  524. says

  525. for all

  526. the promises

  527. of God

  528. find

  529. their yes

  530. in

  531. him.

  532. That is why

  533. it is through

  534. him

  535. that we utter

  536. our amen

  537. to God

  538. for his

  539. glory.

  540. all of the

  541. answers

  542. to our

  543. prayers

  544. are yes

  545. in Christ

  546. as long

  547. as our

  548. prayers are

  549. oriented

  550. towards the

  551. glory of God

  552. and the

  553. desire for

  554. him

  555. to be

  556. evident

  557. in all

  558. of the

  559. affairs

  560. of life.

  561. His desire

  562. is for you

  563. to grow

  564. in your

  565. abiding

  566. relationship

  567. with him

  568. and for

  569. those who

  570. are affected

  571. by your

  572. ministry

  573. to be

  574. drawn in

  575. to relationship

  576. with him

  577. as well.

  578. So God's

  579. answers are

  580. yes.

  581. We have

  582. confidence in

  583. that.

  584. But notice

  585. as it moves

  586. to verses

  587. 16 and

  588. 17

  589. there is

  590. also this

  591. confidence

  592. that we

  593. have in

  594. God's

  595. answer of

  596. forgiveness.

  597. Forgiveness

  598. of sin.

  599. Let me

  600. read this

  601. for us

  602. in verse

  603. 16 and

  604. 17.

  605. If anyone

  606. sees his

  607. brother

  608. committing a

  609. sin not

  610. leading to

  611. death he

  612. shall ask

  613. and God

  614. will give

  615. him life.

  616. To those

  617. who commit

  618. sins that

  619. do not

  620. lead to

  621. death there

  622. is sin

  623. that leads

  624. to death.

  625. I do not

  626. say that one

  627. should pray

  628. about that.

  629. All wrongdoing

  630. is sin but

  631. there is sin

  632. that does not

  633. lead to

  634. death.

  635. What in

  636. the world

  637. is this

  638. talking about?

  639. I don't

  640. know.

  641. I don't

  642. know definitively.

  643. But here

  644. are some

  645. things that

  646. we do

  647. know.

  648. First of

  649. all we

  650. understand

  651. that what

  652. John is

  653. talking about

  654. is not

  655. talking about

  656. praying for

  657. somebody's

  658. salvation so

  659. they find

  660. their way and

  661. now all of a

  662. sudden magically

  663. become a

  664. Christian.

  665. Certainly we

  666. need to be

  667. praying for

  668. the souls of

  669. those who

  670. are lost.

  671. Jesus on

  672. the cross

  673. says Father

  674. forgive them

  675. they know

  676. not what

  677. they do.

  678. We need to

  679. be praying

  680. for the

  681. lost.

  682. But we

  683. cannot pray

  684. them to

  685. salvation.

  686. We cannot

  687. pray them

  688. into heaven.

  689. That is

  690. something they

  691. must do for

  692. themselves.

  693. Repentance

  694. and obedience

  695. and yielding

  696. to God is

  697. something that

  698. has to happen

  699. personally.

  700. Something that

  701. only can be

  702. done individually.

  703. We can't do

  704. it for them.

  705. So this is

  706. not a prayer

  707. for salvation

  708. for those who

  709. are lost.

  710. lost.

  711. This is

  712. also not a

  713. prayer for

  714. forgiveness to

  715. those who are

  716. absent in the

  717. process.

  718. What I mean by

  719. that is if you

  720. are aware of

  721. individuals in

  722. your life who

  723. are Christians

  724. and are sinning

  725. their sin

  726. doesn't lead to

  727. death meaning

  728. their sin isn't

  729. going to lead

  730. them to eternal

  731. destruction.

  732. You can't just

  733. shoot off these

  734. prayers and pray

  735. for forgiveness

  736. for them and

  737. that will all

  738. of a sudden be

  739. covered.

  740. Okay?

  741. I'll just pray

  742. for everyone in

  743. my church.

  744. They're sinning

  745. these various

  746. sins and then

  747. we'll be

  748. perfectly sanctified.

  749. No, as John

  750. says in 1 John

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  751. chapter 1,

  752. if we confess

  753. our sin, he is

  754. faithful and just

  755. to forgive.

  756. That again is

  757. also requires

  758. personal

  759. brokenness.

  760. It requires

  761. personal

  762. confession.

  763. A personal

  764. recognition of

  765. our own

  766. dysfunction and

  767. stepping out

  768. of line.

  769. Now, what I

  770. think this is

  771. talking about

  772. is closer to

  773. what we find

  774. in James

    James 5 chapter mention

  775. chapter 5.

  776. James chapter

    James 5 chapter mention

  777. 5, that

  778. verse 16,

  779. where those

  780. who are involved

  781. in sin ask

  782. for their

  783. fellow brothers

  784. and sisters to

  785. come around

  786. them.

  787. And it says,

  788. therefore,

  789. confess your

  790. sin to one

  791. another and

  792. pray for one

  793. another that you

  794. may be healed.

  795. the prayer of

  796. a righteous

  797. person has

  798. great power

  799. as it is

  800. working.

  801. I don't know

  802. about you,

  803. but there have

  804. been times in

  805. my life where

  806. I have been

  807. so, felt so

  808. bankrupt

  809. spiritually.

  810. I feel so

  811. disqualified as

  812. an individual.

  813. I feel like I've

  814. blown it so

  815. much that God

  816. couldn't possibly

  817. hear my prayer.

  818. and so I

  819. confess my

  820. sin to a

  821. brother in

  822. Christ and

  823. say, would

  824. you just please

  825. pray for me?

  826. I just need

  827. God to rush

  828. into my life

  829. and to fill

  830. the vacuum

  831. of my heart.

  832. And that

  833. brother comes

  834. alongside and

  835. says, I'd just

  836. love to pray

  837. for you.

  838. And in his

  839. righteousness

  840. carries me to

  841. the throne,

  842. pleads for

  843. me on my

  844. behalf for

  845. forgiveness,

  846. pleads for

  847. God's mercy to

  848. come through,

  849. and I am

  850. met by the

  851. fellowship of

  852. God and I

  853. am joined in

  854. fellowship with

  855. him.

  856. That is the

  857. blessing that we

  858. have as believers

  859. in Christ, to do

  860. that for one

  861. another as we're

  862. willing to confess

  863. our faults to

  864. one another so

  865. that you might be

  866. healed.

  867. Galatians chapter

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  868. 6, 1 and 2

  869. says much the

  870. same thing.

  871. It says,

  872. Brothers, if

  873. anyone is caught

  874. in a transgression,

  875. you who are

  876. spiritual, restore

  877. such a one in a

  878. spirit of

  879. gentleness.

  880. That's what we're

  881. talking about here.

  882. We're talking

  883. about recognizing

  884. the dysfunction

  885. of your brother

  886. or sister in

  887. Christ, and

  888. rather than

  889. holding that

  890. against them,

  891. rushing to the

  892. rescue to seek

  893. to bring them

  894. into fellowship

  895. with God,

  896. praying with

  897. them over sin,

  898. seeking God's

  899. forgiveness,

  900. filling the gap,

  901. filling the void

  902. of their own

  903. spiritual life,

  904. and seeking to

  905. lead them in

  906. communion with

  907. God himself.

  908. Verses 18 and

  909. 19, our next

  910. point, talk about

  911. the certainty of

  912. spiritual preservation,

  913. certainty of

  914. divine preservation.

  915. Let me read this

  916. for us.

  917. Let's see.

  918. we know that

  919. everyone who has

  920. been born of God

  921. does not keep

  922. on sinning.

  923. But he who is

  924. born of God

  925. protects him,

  926. and the evil one

  927. does not touch him.

  928. We know that we

  929. are from God,

  930. and the whole world

  931. lies in the power

  932. of the evil one.

  933. and we know the

  934. Son of God has

  935. come and has

  936. given us

  937. understanding so

  938. that we may

  939. know him who

  940. is true,

  941. and we are in

  942. him who is

  943. true,

  944. in his Son,

  945. Jesus Christ.

  946. He is the

  947. true God

  948. and eternal

  949. life.

  950. Little children,

  951. keep yourselves

  952. from idols.

  953. over the past

  954. couple of weeks,

  955. we have been

  956. talking about

  957. the overcoming,

  958. victorious,

  959. triumphant life

  960. of the Christian.

  961. Not because of

  962. some resident

  963. power that we

  964. have in and of

  965. ourselves,

  966. but because of

  967. the indwelling

  968. power of the

  969. Holy Spirit

  970. who strengthens

  971. us for this

  972. walk that we

  973. have from day

  974. to day.

  975. It is an

  976. overcoming,

  977. triumphant life

  978. because of this

  979. abiding relationship

  980. that we experience

  981. with Christ.

  982. because of the

  983. power of the

  984. Spirit that is

  985. working within.

  986. That is what

  987. John wants them

  988. to have confidence

  989. about.

  990. No matter how

  991. bad this life

  992. becomes,

  993. no matter how

  994. great your

  995. adversary might

  996. be,

  997. and he points

  998. to how bad

  999. he is,

  1000. he says here

  1001. that the evil

  1002. one cannot

  1003. touch him.

  1004. Peter,

  1005. in talking about

  1006. the characteristics

  1007. of the evil

  1008. one,

  1009. says,

  1010. watch out,

  1011. Satan walks

  1012. around like a

  1013. roaring lion

  1014. seeking whom

  1015. he may devour.

  1016. We have a

  1017. great adversary.

  1018. So often,

  1019. I find myself

  1020. becoming

  1021. complacent,

  1022. sometimes

  1023. apathetic,

  1024. maybe even a

  1025. little ignorant

  1026. to the involvement

  1027. of our

  1028. adversary in

  1029. this world.

  1030. It finds a

  1031. way to use

  1032. the systems

  1033. of this world

  1034. to corrupt,

  1035. to lead us

  1036. into sin,

  1037. to change our

  1038. orientation in

  1039. terms of how we

  1040. think, the

  1041. philosophies of

  1042. this world,

1043. to lead us in a

  1044. direction that

  1045. takes us away

  1046. from God.

  1047. God says,

  1048. but those who

  1049. have this

  1050. abiding

  1051. relationship

  1052. with Christ,

  1053. God says,

  1054. in the end,

  1055. nothing can

  1056. touch you.

  1057. No matter how

  1058. bad it gets,

  1059. you are mine.

  1060. Kind of like

  1061. what he says

  1062. to Peter.

  1063. He says,

  1064. Peter,

  1065. Satan has

  1066. desired to

  1067. sift you

  1068. like wheat,

  1069. but I've

  1070. prayed for you.

  1071. I've prayed

  1072. for you.

  1073. You're mine,

  1074. Peter.

  1075. No one can

  1076. touch you

  1077. because you

  1078. belong to

  1079. me.

  1080. We have that

  1081. promise in

  1082. Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1083. 1 that the

  1084. Holy Spirit is

  1085. our guarantee

  1086. of salvation

  1087. until the

  1088. coming of

  1089. Christ.

  1090. Nothing can

  1091. touch you.

  1092. You don't

  1093. have to worry

  1094. about what's

  1095. coming.

  1096. They may

  1097. touch your

  1098. life, but

  1099. they cannot

  1100. touch your

  1101. soul.

  1102. They cannot

  1103. affect your

  1104. future

  1105. destiny.

  1106. You belong

  1107. to me.

  1108. You can be

  1109. settled in

  1110. that.

  1111. You can move

  1112. forward in

  1113. confidence because

  1114. of that and

  1115. because of the

  1116. confidence of

  1117. divine preservation,

  1118. there can be

  1119. great risk

  1120. taking in the

  1121. spiritual life.

  1122. I'm challenged

  1123. to think of

  1124. what we might

  1125. be able to

  1126. accomplish if

  1127. we were willing

  1128. to really trust

  1129. in the promise

  1130. of that divine

  1131. preservation.

  1132. what might

  1133. we be able

  1134. to do?

  1135. I was even

  1136. thinking about

  1137. this a couple

  1138. years ago when

  1139. one of my

  1140. kids started

  1141. learning Arabic.

  1142. I thought to

  1143. myself, what is

  1144. this going to

  1145. mean in terms of

  1146. where is she

  1147. going to end

  1148. up?

  1149. What is God

  1150. doing in her

  1151. life to move

  1152. her to places

  1153. of riskiness,

  1154. the jeopardy

  1155. of the

  1156. physical life?

  1157. life?

  1158. What might

  1159. her future

  1160. become?

  1161. That is,

  1162. should be a

  1163. minor concern

  1164. because what

  1165. really matters

  1166. is that we

  1167. are anchored

  1168. in him.

  1169. We are

  1170. preserved by

  1171. him.

  1172. We have a

  1173. future destiny

  1174. in heaven

  1175. because of

  1176. him.

  1177. It should

  1178. lead us to

  1179. great risk

  1180. taking in

  1181. our missions

  1182. endeavors,

  1183. in our

  1184. willingness to

  1185. accept much

  1186. for the sake

  1187. of him.

  1188. Finally,

  1189. verses 20

  1190. and 21,

  1191. we have

  1192. certainty

  1193. about the

  1194. truth.

  1195. Certainty

  1196. about the

  1197. truth.

  1198. We know

  1199. him,

  1200. we know,

  1201. excuse me,

  1202. we know that

  1203. the son of

  1204. God has

  1205. come and

  1206. has given

  1207. us understanding

  1208. so that we

  1209. may know

  1210. him who

  1211. is true.

  1212. We are in

  1213. him who is

  1214. true in

  1215. his son,

  1216. Jesus Christ.

  1217. He is the

  1218. true God

  1219. and eternal

  1220. life.

  1221. It is

  1222. astounding

  1223. to think

  1224. that we

  1225. have access

  1226. to truth.

  1227. We have

  1228. the ability

  1229. to walk

  1230. through this

  1231. life convinced

  1232. of the

  1233. truth,

  1234. anchored in

  1235. the truth,

  1236. walking in

  1237. the truth.

  1238. God has

  1239. given us

  1240. understanding

  1241. through his

  1242. word and

  1243. through his

  1244. Holy Spirit

  1245. spirit and

  1246. because of

  1247. the truth

  1248. that he has

  1249. given to us

  1250. through his

  1251. son, we

  1252. know we

  1253. can please

  1254. him and

  1255. fellowship with

  1256. him and

  1257. we can give

  1258. that message

  1259. to those who

  1260. desperately

  1261. need it.

  1262. As we

  1263. come to

  1264. the end of

  1265. our service

  1266. and now

  1267. move to

  1268. this time

  1269. of communion,

  1270. I want us

  1271. now to back

  1272. up to

  1273. point number

  1274. one.

  1275. certainty

  1276. about

  1277. Jesus

  1278. Christ.

  1279. What a

  1280. sweet truth

  1281. this is.

  1282. And God

  1283. has given

  1284. us evidences

  1285. in three

  1286. different ways.

  1287. Evidence

  1288. through the

  1289. water,

  1290. evidence

  1291. through the

  1292. blood,

  1293. and evidence

  1294. through his

  1295. Holy Spirit.

  1296. We could

  1297. spend an

  1298. entire message

  1299. talking about

  1300. these three

  1301. evidences that

  1302. God has given

  1303. to us.

  1304. The evidence

  1305. of the

  1306. water is

  1307. the evidence

  1308. of his

  1309. baptism.

  1310. It's the

  1311. evidence of

  1312. Jesus in

  1313. his willingness

  1314. to be

  1315. obedient.

  1316. John, if

  1317. you remember

  1318. John the

  1319. Baptist, when

  1320. Jesus came

  1321. to be

  1322. baptized,

  1323. pushed back

  1324. against Jesus

  1325. and essentially

  1326. said, what are

  1327. you doing here?

  1328. You don't need

  1329. baptism.

  1330. This is the

  1331. baptism of

  1332. repentance.

  1333. And Jesus,

  1334. in response

  1335. to him,

  1336. says, I

  1337. must fulfill

  1338. all

  1339. righteousness.

  1340. this is

  1341. necessary

  1342. because I

  1343. must now

  1344. be the

  1345. means of

  1346. righteousness

  1347. to all.

  1348. Instead of

  1349. forgiveness

  1350. flowing through

  1351. the sacrifices,

  1352. instead of

  1353. purity coming

  1354. through the

  1355. washing of

  1356. the priests

  1357. and their

  1358. communion with

  1359. God through

  1360. the context

  1361. of the

  1362. temple,

  1363. Jesus established

  1364. himself as the

  1365. means by which

  1366. we can get

  1367. to God.

  1368. Jesus must

  1369. fulfill all

  1370. righteousness.

  1371. That forgiveness

  1372. flows through

  1373. him.

  1374. Cleansing

  1375. comes through

  1376. Christ and

  1377. not through

  1378. any other

  1379. means.

  1380. Baptism was

  1381. the way for

  1382. Jesus to

  1383. fulfill all

  1384. righteousness.

  1385. The righteousness

  1386. that couldn't be

  1387. fulfilled through

  1388. the millennia,

  1389. through the

  1390. generations,

  1391. was finally

  1392. fulfilled in

  1393. Jesus Christ.

  1394. Christ.

  1395. Jesus ups the

  1396. ante in

  1397. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  1398. 5, the

  1399. Sermon on the

  1400. Mount.

  1401. And when they

  1402. couldn't fulfill

  1403. even what they

  1404. understood about

  1405. the law, the

  1406. letter of the

  1407. law, Jesus

  1408. raises the

  1409. bar to

  1410. extraordinary

  1411. levels and

  1412. says, well, you

  1413. have heard it

  1414. said, but I

  1415. say to you,

  1416. which essentially

  1417. was, you

  1418. thought the law

  1419. was hard before.

  1420. Let me tell you

  1421. what I really

  1422. mean.

  1423. Only Jesus

  1424. could fulfill

  1425. righteousness.

  1426. And that

  1427. testimony of

  1428. the pure,

  1429. radiant

  1430. righteousness of

  1431. Christ is a

  1432. testimony for

  1433. us of God's

  1434. authentication

  1435. through his

  1436. son that he

  1437. was truly

  1438. God.

  1439. It is the

  1440. first testimony

  1441. that speaks to

  1442. the fact that he

  1443. is who he said

  1444. he was.

  1445. only God could

  1446. live the holy

  1447. life.

  1448. I'm going to

  1449. pray for us

  1450. and we're going

  1451. to remember the

  1452. holy life of God

  1453. through the bread

  1454. because it was

  1455. through the bread

  1456. that Jesus says,

  1457. not my will but

  1458. thine be done.

  1459. I will let my

  1460. obedience lead to

  1461. the point of

  1462. death, even

  1463. death on a

  1464. cross.

  1465. Let me pray as

  1466. we remember the

  1467. bread this morning.
