  1. Believe it or not, we are just two messages away from the end of 1 Thessalonians.

  2. ! We have this morning's message and then one more next week.

  3. !

  4. It's amazing that we're now 10 messages into this and it's been a great time of being reminded

  5. of the truths that we find here and encouraged through this process and I hope that you have

  6. felt the same.

  7. I wonder though if there may be some things, there are at least two more Sundays between

  8. now and Christmas, our Christmas program in the beginning of December 16th and then we

  9. have a Thanksgiving service on the 25th of November and I'm going to do something, do

  10. some exploring here.

  11. I have messages planned for those weeks but I wonder if maybe there are some things

  12. that we touched on over the past 10 weeks and we'll touch on this morning and next week and

  13. you would say, you know Pastor Andrew, there's just, I wonder, can you spend a little bit

  14. more time on chapter such and such verse such and such and answer this question for me.

  15. We've got two weeks that we can do that and send me a text, send me an email and I'll contemplate

  16. whether or not we do that, okay?

  17. I'm thinking particularly of the subject that we're going to be talking about this morning

  18. and next week as we describe our future hope especially in relationship to the coming of

  19. the Lord Jesus and there's a lot of awareness about this issue, a lot of curiosity about this

  20. issue and maybe you'd have some questions that we can dig into a little bit more.

  21. But before we jump into the message, I do want to just let you know that another individual

  22. in our body, Monica Cannon, if you don't know who that is, use your directory app, you can

  23. see her face and her family, her dad just died this morning so please keep her in your prayers.

  24. Let me read our passage this morning and I want to open it up with a story.

  25. So please turn with me if you would to 1 Thessalonians chapter 4.

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  26. It's on page 987 if you're a guest with us and I'll begin in verse 13 and we'll be moving

  27. through verse 18.

  28. Here's what it says.

  29. But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not

  30. grieve as others do who have no hope.

  31. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so through Jesus, God will bring

  32. with him those who have fallen asleep.

  33. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until

  34. the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.

  35. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with a voice of an archangel,

  36. and with the sound of the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

  37. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds

  38. to meet the Lord in the air.

  39. And so we will always be with the Lord.

  40. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

  41. What does a life that is dominated by that truth begin to look like?

  42. If you live with the ever-present reality of the coming of Christ, what would be different

  43. today, and what would be different this week, and this month?

  44. Would there be any changes that you would make if you knew that tomorrow Christ would take

  45. you to be with him in glory?

  46. Would it perhaps change the way you spend the afternoon?

  47. Would it perhaps change some of the conversations that you will have with your family?

  48. Would it create a bit of impetus in your heart and life to want to pick up the phone and to

  49. make a couple of calls to people that you love who you know do not know Jesus as their Savior?

  50. Would there be some broken relationships that you would want to mend, or at least to begin

  51. the process of reconciliation?

  52. Would now, all of a sudden, those pressures that weigh down on your life that seemed so important

  53. yesterday, would they begin to lose the burdening?

  54. I love this story of a girl by the name of Brooke Brunkowski.

  55. Francis Chan talks about her in his book, Crazy Love.

  56. He says that Brooke Brunkowski was a 14-year-old girl who was absolutely in love with Jesus.

  57. You ever know high schoolers and junior highers who have that kind of passion for the Lord?

  58. That was Brooke.

  59. She spent her babysitting money on Bibles.

  60. She stockpiled them in her garage so that any opportunity that she had to give a Bible

  61. away to an unsaved friend, it was right there at the ready so that she could hand it off.

  62. There were pastors in the area who heard about her zeal for the Lord Jesus and did these little

  63. Bible drives, and so boxes of Bibles were carted to her house and stockpiled away so that she

  64. could, they could continue to fan the flames of her passion for the Lord Jesus.

  65. Brooke wrote an essay when she was 12 years old.

  66. Here's what it says.

  67. 12 years old.

  68. I'll live my life to the fullest.

  69. I'll be happy.

  70. I'll brighten up.

  71. I'll be more joyful than I've ever been.

  72. I will be kind to others.

  73. I will loosen up.

  74. I will tell others about Christ.

  75. I will go on adventures and change the world.

  76. I'll be bold and not change who I really am.

  77. I will have no troubles, but instead help others to see their troubles.

  78. You see, I'll be one of those people who live to be a history maker at a young age.

  79. Oh, I'll have moments, good and bad, but I'll wipe away the bad and only remember the good.

  80. In fact, that's all I'll remember, just good moments, nothing in between, just living my

  81. life to the fullest.

  82. I'll be one of those people who go somewhere with a mission, an awesome plan, a world-changing

  83. plan, and nothing will hold me back.

  84. I'll set an example for others.

  85. I will pray for direction.

  86. I have my life before me.

  87. I will give others the joy I have, and God will give me more joy.

  88. I will do everything God tells me to do.

  89. I will follow the footsteps of God.

  90. I will do my best.

  91. Twelve-year-old wrote that.

  92. Well, during her freshman year of high school, she was traveling with some friends to a movie

  93. theater, and you guessed it, an accident took place, and her life was snuffed out in a moment.

  94. People from her public high school flocked to her funeral.

  95. There were over 1,500 students and teachers and members from the community who came to her

  96. funeral because of the profound commitment of joy and hope in God.

  97. And when the gospel was shared and people were invited to come forward to give their lives

  98. to Jesus, more than 200 students and teachers came to the front to receive Jesus Christ as

  99. their Savior and also get a gift from Brooke, a Bible that she had been stockpiling away so

  100. that she could help to encourage their faith in Christ.

  101. Usher's gave those Bibles to each of those individuals.

  102. And in one day, Brooke Bronkowski was used as a resource and an instrument of God to lead

  103. more people to Christ than many of us will lead to Christ in a lifetime at the age of 14.

  104. You see, her short life, although snuffed out prematurely, as we would say, was lived with such intensity,

  105. with such devotion to God that God used her life to absolutely transform her immediate surroundings.

  106. And somewhat prophetically, God used her example at a young age to impact the world.

  107. Not only in California, in Simi Valley, but now as her story is captured in this book, Crazy Love,

  108. to perpetuate that example, that life that we get to speak about a bit this morning and use

  109. as an example of what it looks like to be a person of hope.

  110. A person who is dominated by the reality of the truth that we're going to look at this morning.

  111. What might life look like?

  112. What might God do for you, in you, and through you?

  113. If every moment of life was captured, captured and saturated by hope.

  114. Hope in Christ.

  115. Hope in His coming.

  116. The problem is that there are so many things that get in the way.

  117. There are so many things that distract our supreme hope,

  118. the hope that we should have in God,

  119. and distract us from that hope,

  120. and either dilute the hope in us,

  121. or begin to carry our hopes over into things that really don't matter.

  122. Those superficial hopes,

  123. those secondary hopes,

  124. however great they might be.

  125. And they keep us from really making a difference in the world,

  126. because we set our hopes on the things that don't matter,

  127. the things that are fleshly,

  128. the things that are here,

  129. the things that are temporal,

  130. instead of setting our hope,

  131. and setting our eyes on the things of God,

  132. the things of Christ.

  133. So how do we reclaim hope?

  134. How do we begin to nurture a passion for hope?

  135. How do we fuel up ourselves with this hope that God desires for each of us to have,

  136. that can carry us through the moments,

  137. the difficulties of life,

  138. that can help to catapult our spirituality.

  139. For those of you who have felt stagnant in your spirituality,

  140. maybe have felt unfruitful in your life,

  141. what kind of difference am I really making?

  142. Perhaps the key for you this morning is to recognize

  143. not only the significance of hope,

  144. but how to fuel hope in your lives.

  145. So this morning I want to encourage us

  146. as we look at the significance of hope

  147. and begin to recognize how hope is reclaimed.

  148. We begin this morning in verses 13 to 15,

  149. and we see here that the fuel of hope is the knowledge of God.

  150. The fuel of hope is the knowledge of God.

  151. Notice he says in verse 13,

  152. but we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers,

  153. about those who are asleep,

  154. that you may not grieve as others who have no hope.

  155. The starting point for hope,

  156. and really the starting point of the Christian life,

  157. is true knowledge of God.

  158. We're going to look at this a bit more in just a few moments here,

  159. but I want you to understand that the kind of knowledge

  160. that Paul is talking about

  161. is not just the information dump that we're so familiar with.

  162. It's not just an awareness of the facts.

  163. It's not just an accumulation

  164. or an articulation of doctrine and theology.

  165. It doesn't matter whether or not you're a scholar.

  166. It doesn't matter if you can prove every point.

  167. What really matters is that you embrace the things you know,

  168. and you have pulled them into your life,

  169. and you have activated them as a means of behavior,

  170. as a means of true faith.

  171. Last week, we saw that Paul made a case

  172. for the significance of knowledge.

  173. He has done that throughout his letter,

  174. but particularly last week,

  175. in chapter 4, verses 4 and 5,

  176. he says that each one of you know

  177. how to control your body in holiness and honor,

  178. not in the passion of lusts like the Gentiles

  179. who do not know God.

  180. That is the fundamental distinction,

  181. the difference between truly knowing

  182. and just having some intellectual assent to knowledge.

  183. Because the root cause of deficiency in the Christian life

  184. is a lack of knowledge,

  185. not the lack of information,

  186. not the lack of reading and having memorized the Bible,

  187. not knowing the stories

  188. and just having some sort of facts and figures,

  189. but the kind of knowledge that moves us to action,

  190. the kind of knowledge

  191. that helps to guide our experience with him.

  192. Notice that Paul says,

  193. I don't want you to be uninformed about something in particular.

  194. I don't want you to be uninformed about those who are asleep.

  195. And what Paul is referring to here, of course,

  196. is not just people who are taking a nap

  197. or people who are down for the night.

  198. He's talking about individuals

  199. who in the vernacular of the day have died.

  200. And he wants them not to be sad.

  201. He wants them not to be discouraged.

  202. There was a prevailing view,

  203. a prevailing fear in that culture

  204. that those who had died

  205. had actually missed the resurrection.

  206. That those who had died

  207. had their life snuffed out

  208. and now there wasn't an opportunity for them

  209. to participate in the coming of Christ.

  210. Speaking of the pagan world,

  211. William Barclay points to a couple of individuals

  212. who kind of share the running theme of the day.

  213. One historian says,

  214. once a man dies, there is no resurrection.

  215. Another figure says,

  216. there is hope for those who are alive,

  217. but those who have died are without hope.

  218. And that was the prevailing opinion of the day.

  219. And Paul wants to correct that.

  220. He wants the church to live in the reality of understanding.

  221. And that understanding

  222. is anchored in the knowledge

  223. of Jesus' resurrection.

  224. It's anchored in the knowledge

  225. of Jesus' resurrection.

  226. Let me read this for us again.

  227. He says in verse 14,

  228. For since we believe that Jesus died

  229. and rose again,

  230. even so through Jesus,

  231. God will bring with him

  232. those who have fallen asleep.

  233. Come on, Thessalonica.

  234. Don't you know the gospel?

  235. Come on, Thessalonica.

  236. Don't you recognize

  237. that the Jesus that you have placed your trust in

  238. is the God who died

  239. but also rose again?

  240. Don't you appreciate the fact

  241. that those who are in Christ

  242. will also now experience

  243. the benefits of that resurrection too?

  244. That if you have rested your confidence

  245. in the truth of the gospel,

  246. that you're resting your confidence

  247. in a resurrected Savior,

  248. not a dead one.

  249. And because he is alive,

  250. then it has definite implications

  251. for us as believers.

  252. Because he is a resurrected Lord,

  253. then we know that not only

  254. is there a resurrection of Jesus,

  255. but there's also a resurrection of us.

  256. Know that the knowledge

  257. of our resurrection as well.

  258. That you have participated in Christ

  259. and as those who have participated in him,

  260. you will also experience

  261. the joy of resurrection.

  262. And that was just built in to the gospel.

  263. It was one of those things

  264. that they should have understood.

  265. He says here in these verses,

  266. in verse 14,

  267. which rings a little hint of interest,

  268. he says in verse 14,

  269. God will bring with him

  270. those who have fallen asleep.

  271. But then if we drop down to verse 15,

  272. we see that those who are alive,

  273. who are left until the coming of the Lord,

  274. will not precede those

  275. who have fallen asleep.

  276. Then in verse 16,

  277. for the Lord himself will descend from heaven

  278. with a cry, with a command,

  279. with the voice of an archangel,

  280. with the sound of the trumpet of God,

  281. and the dead in Christ will rise first.

  282. Now time out here, Paul.

  283. Hang on.

  284. What is going on here?

  285. Does Christ bring with him

  286. those who are dead?

  287. Or does somehow they get resurrected?

  288. I don't understand

  289. what's taking place here.

  290. Are they there?

  291. Are they here?

  292. And how do they meet?

  293. What is taking place?

  294. What is the truth?

  295. Well, I want to point to a couple of verses.

  296. The first is found in 2 Corinthians 5, 8, and 9.

  297. It'll help us to understand

  298. what Paul is referring to.

  299. He says,

  300. We are confident, yes,

  301. well pleased, rather,

  302. to be absent from the body

  303. and to be present with the Lord.

  304. Therefore, we make it our aim,

  305. whether present or absent,

  306. to be well pleasing to him.

  307. Paul is alluding to the fact that those who have died in Christ,

  308. those who have believed in Christ and have trusted him as their Savior,

  309. will also then be resurrected immediately.

  310. Their spirit will then go to be with God in heaven.

  311. But here in Romans 6, verse 5,

    Romans 6:5

  312. we also understand this reality.

  313. For if we have been united with him in death like his,

  314. we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

  315. What does that mean?

  316. That means,

  317. if Christ's body was resurrected and not just his spirit,

  318. that there will be a bodily resurrection of the saints as well.

  319. So although they are in heaven,

  320. their spirit is there with God at the moment of their death,

  321. now there is going to be a reunion that takes place.

  322. A full resurrection, as it were.

  323. Body and spirit joined together in the clouds

  324. to meet the Lord in the air

  325. and then be reunited with the other believers throughout history in that respect.

  326. Understand the knowledge of Jesus' resurrection.

  327. It is essential to the gospel.

  328. And when you know what Jesus has accomplished for you,

  329. you will begin to appreciate and understand

  330. that you will participate with him in a resurrection just like Jesus'.

  331. His bodily resurrection will be a resurrection we will also experience.

  332. So how does faith in resurrection in your life give you hope?

  333. I was thinking about this.

  334. What is the difference between a knowledge of a truth

  335. and the actual participation in that truth?

  336. Any of you who have been to the Grand Canyon

  337. might understand or know this next picture.

  338. There's a, it's kind of hard to see,

  339. but there's this bridge, this glass bridge, okay?

  340. And it's 4,000 feet above the ground.

  341. And the only thing that's holding you up is this pane of glass, okay?

  342. Now, here are the statistics.

  343. It's hanging 70 feet out from the end of the cliff,

  344. 4,000 feet to the ground.

  345. Apparently, apparently, now I just have a hard time with it,

  346. apparently it can hold 70, count them, 70 747 airliner jets.

  347. 70?

  348. 70?

  349. It should be able to hold me up, right?

  350. But I don't know about you.

  351. I don't think I'm going on that bridge, okay?

  352. I'm sorry.

  353. I'm just going to let every one of you experience that, okay?

  354. Now, maybe you have seen this YouTube video, okay?

  355. This is a glass bridge over, I think it's 3,000 feet over something.

  356. And here's this guy walking on this glass bridge,

  357. and you may not be able to tell,

  358. but it's actually cracking underneath him, okay?

  359. So these panes of glass are cracking underneath him,

  360. and he is jumping up to the rail

  361. so that he can save himself from this fall.

  362. Now, I don't know enough about this particular picture,

  363. but apparently they've actually built into this glass

  364. a fake fracture.

  365. And that's why the camera is at just the right angle,

  366. so it can get the response of the individuals

  367. who are seeing this glass begin to crack underneath them.

  368. It's like this perfect shot,

  369. and this is not by accident.

  370. It's something that I think has been fabricated.

  371. Thanks a lot.

  372. I'm not...

  373. Give me back my admission fee.

  374. I'm sorry.

  375. I'm going to have to pay for hospital bills now.

  376. But this is what Peter says for us to do.

  377. He says in 1 Peter 1, verse 13,

    1 Peter 1:13

  378. Therefore, prepare your minds for action,

  379. and being sober-minded,

  380. this part is what I really want to draw your attention to,

  381. set your hope fully on the grace

  382. that will be brought to you

  383. at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  384. Set your hope fully on the grace

  385. that will be brought to you

  386. at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  387. You begin to do this

  388. moment by moment,

  389. decision by decision,

  390. step by step,

  391. priority by priority,

  392. conversation by conversation

  393. begins to be guided by the full weight

  394. and resting

  395. on the hope of His return.

  396. It will change everything about your life.

  397. Absolutely everything about how you live.

  398. Tomorrow will be a different day

  399. if we begin to recognize the significance

  400. not only of the truth,

  401. but we begin to put this truth to work in our lives.

  402. Resting fully on that hope,

  403. the hope of Christ,

  404. not the hope of our savings account,

  405. not the hope of our position or title,

  406. not the hope of our relationships,

  407. not the hope of our good appearances,

  408. but the hope on Christ alone.

  409. That will change everything about how we live.

  410. So the fuel of hope is the knowledge of God,

  411. but we find here in the next few verses,

  412. the fuel of hope is the promise of God.

  413. It is the promise of God.

  414. Look with me in verses 16 and 17.

  415. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven

  416. with a cry of command,

  417. with the voice of an archangel,

  418. and the dead in Christ will rise first.

  419. Then we who are alive,

  420. who are left,

  421. will be caught up together with them in the clouds

  422. to meet the Lord in the air,

  423. and so we will always be with the Lord.

  424. Promise number one

  425. is the promise of the future return of Christ.

  426. promise of the future return of Christ.

  427. Remember that time Jesus had resurrected,

  428. and Jesus was now spending time with His disciples.

  429. They're having some fellowship with one another,

  430. and they have made their way to Galilee,

  431. and He saw them there around the Sea of Galilee,

  432. but now they've made their way back to Jerusalem,

  433. and Jesus is talking about this future day.

  434. when He's going to be coming again.

  435. And He tells them in Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1:9

  436. verses 9 and 11,

  437. He says,

  438. And when He said these things,

  439. they were looking on,

  440. and Jesus was lifted up,

  441. and a cloud took Him out of their sight.

  442. While they were gazing into heaven,

  443. as He went,

  444. behold, two men stood by them in white robes,

  445. and they said,

  446. Men of Galilee,

  447. why do you stand looking into heaven?

  448. This Jesus,

  449. who was taking up from you into heaven,

  450. will come in the same way

  451. in which you saw Him go into heaven?

  452. Any mystery, then,

  453. why Jesus would come in the clouds?

  454. Any mystery why that would be the rallying point,

  455. the place of reunion with His people?

  456. No, not when you begin to understand

  457. that God will fulfill His promises

  458. in just the way He planned them.

  459. But notice a couple of things here.

  460. First, I want you to notice

  461. that it is the Lord Himself who will come.

  462. He will not send a representative.

  463. He will not allow someone else

  464. to enjoy the culmination

  465. of the victory march

  466. that He intends to have.

  467. And His coming will not be subtle.

  468. It will not be silent.

  469. But it will be visible,

  470. obvious,

  471. and unavoidable.

  472. Paul says,

  473. Don't worry, Thessalonica.

  474. Don't worry.

  475. You can't miss it.

  476. It will be so obvious,

  477. you will not be able to miss.

  478. So why descend from heaven?

  479. Why not just snap your finger

  480. and poof everybody up into heaven

  481. around the throne?

  482. Well,

  483. because God has intended for this

  484. to be visible.

  485. And why come with a shout?

  486. Well, because He wants it

  487. not only to be visible,

  488. He wants it to be audible.

  489. And why a trumpet?

  490. So the purpose of the event is clear.

  491. It's definitive declaration

  492. to signal God's crowning achievement

  493. of redemption,

  494. of purchasing for Himself

  495. and reclaiming for Himself

  496. those who are saved.

  497. Now, thousands of years later,

  498. through the patient endurance of God,

  499. He finally comes to claim His prize.

  500. will only the Christians hear?

  501. I don't believe so.

  502. I think the world will hear

  503. and see this event unfold.

  504. I think all we have to do

  505. is look at the baptism

  506. and we understand

  507. that those who were there

  508. at the baptism

  509. heard the Father from heaven say,

  510. This is my beloved Son

  511. in whom I'm well pleased.

  512. and the disciples

  513. at the transfiguration

  514. when the resounding voice

  515. of the Father spoke,

  516. This is my beloved Son

  517. whom I'm well pleased to hear Him,

  518. they heard the voice,

  519. they fell on their faces,

  520. and they were blown away.

  521. And at the very end

  522. of Jesus' public ministry,

  523. we find in John chapter 12,

    John 12 chapter mention

  524. Jesus is speaking about

  525. His desire to glorify the Father

  526. in John 12, 28 and 29.

  527. He says,

  528. Father, glorify Your name.

  529. Then a voice came from heaven,

  530. I have glorified it,

  531. and I will glorify it again.

  532. And the crowd that stood there

  533. and heard it said

  534. that it thundered.

  535. Others said,

  536. An angel has spoken to Him.

  537. It is my conviction

  538. that the world will see,

  539. the world will hear,

  540. it will be unmistakable,

  541. this day of triumph for God,

  542. that everyone will be able

  543. to observe in some.

  544. Those who are in faith

  545. will be able to participate.

  546. And then the dead in Christ

  547. will rise first.

  548. Nothing can be said definitively

  549. in terms of the timing of this

  550. and how long will it take

  551. for them to go,

  552. and then we're going to be caught up

  553. together with them.

  554. But it doesn't really matter

  555. because the text is establishing

  556. the priority.

  557. What is the priority?

  558. The priority for God

  559. is the resurrection of those

  560. who are dead first.

  561. And I believe it's because

  562. they demonstrate the full,

  563. the full effects

  564. of what He has come to do

  565. in terms of resurrecting

  566. the Spirit and the body

  567. together.

  568. His victory over

  569. all of the effects

  570. of sin on a life.

  571. The emphasis is placed

  572. on the power

  573. of the resurrection.

  574. They are the ones

  575. who represent

  576. the full effects

  577. of the gospel

  578. taking place

  579. through their life.

  580. Why a bodily resurrection?

  581. Why is this so important?

  582. Because the full redemption

  583. of the entire person

  584. is taking place.

  585. God is a champion

  586. over the full effects

  587. of sin.

  588. Not just the spiritual

  589. parts of life,

  590. but also the physical

  591. parts of life.

  592. He's victorious

  593. over every consequence.

  594. He erases it once

  595. and for all.

  596. No more death,

  597. no more decay,

  598. no more groaning,

  599. no more struggle,

  600. no more imperfection.

  601. In Christ,

  602. it has all been reconciled.

  603. It's all been changed.

  604. Yes, there is a promise

  605. of His return,

  606. but there is also

  607. a promise of reunion.

  608. Reunion with Christ,

  609. and that's what we see next.

  610. Notice the destination.

  611. Notice what it says.

  612. Verse 17.

  613. We who are alive,

  614. who are left,

  615. will be caught up together

  616. with them in the clouds.

  617. What is the purpose?

  618. To meet the Lord

  619. in the air.

  620. And so we will always

  621. be with the Lord.

  622. The destination

  623. is not just the clouds.

  624. The destination

  625. isn't just reunion

  626. with other saints.

  627. The destination

  628. is reunion

  629. with Him.

  630. As spectacular

  631. as this event

  632. may seem,

  633. however dramatic,

  634. however mysterious,

  635. and however the implications

  636. run wild

  637. in our imagination

  638. of what it would be like

  639. here on earth

  640. when bodies

  641. and people

  642. are transported

  643. immediately out of

  644. whatever situation

  645. they're in.

  646. book series

  647. have been written

  648. about this.

  649. Planes crashing,

  650. cars going off the edge,

  651. and clothes

  652. just lying there

  653. unoccupied.

  654. All of these

  655. spectacular things,

  656. but the wonder

  657. of this event

  658. is not what happens

  659. here.

  660. The wonder

  661. of the event

  662. is what happens

  663. there.

  664. Reunion

  665. with Him,

  666. the One

  667. who has done

  668. it all.

  669. The reunion

  670. will be like

  671. no other reunion.

  672. The homecoming

  673. will be like

  674. no other

  675. homecoming.

  676. And don't imagine

  677. that this reunion

  678. is one-sided.

  679. But on God's end,

  680. this is the culmination

  681. of centuries

  682. of sovereign

  683. fulfillment

  684. which have finally

  685. come to fruition.

  686. God will finally

  687. receive His children

  688. home.

  689. And for a God

  690. who celebrates

  691. over one

  692. person who has

  693. come and

  694. repented of their

  695. sin,

  696. imagine now

  697. millions upon

  698. millions now

  699. captured back

  700. to reunion

  701. with Him.

  702. This will be

  703. a glorious day

  704. for us,

  705. but it will also

  706. be a glorious

  707. day for Him.

  708. Don't overlook

  709. the joy

  710. of our Savior.

  711. Imagine the

  712. celebration

  713. that will come.

  714. There's no wonder

  715. why this is done

  716. in such spectacular

  717. display.

  718. This is His

  719. crowning achievement.

  720. The purpose of

  721. redemption that has

  722. been planned since

  723. the beginning of time

  724. and now culminates

  725. in Christ capturing

  726. us up

  727. and us being able

  728. to enjoy

  729. salvation,

  730. the final effects

  731. of salvation

  732. with Him.

  733. finally,

  734. the fuel of hope

  735. is delight

  736. in God.

  737. The fuel of hope

  738. is delight

  739. in God.

  740. We get that

  741. from verse 18.

  742. Notice with me here,

  743. here's what it says,

  744. therefore,

  745. encourage one another

  746. with these words.

  747. Encourage one another

  748. with these words.

  749. Now, let that sink

  750. in just a little bit.

  751. Remember what the

  752. situation was

  753. in Thessalonica.

  754. Remember what this

  755. church is going

  756. through.

  757. Remember that it

  758. is dominated

  759. by persecution.

  760. Remember that this

  761. church is experiencing

  762. the effects

  763. of suffering

  764. and certainly

  765. experiencing

  766. the devastation

  767. of all that

  768. that affords.

  769. Children and

  770. families that are

  771. being threatened,

  772. perhaps imprisoned,

  773. fathers who are

  774. being carted off,

  775. the income

  776. and the ability

  777. for a dad

  778. to minister

  779. to his family

  780. and now his kids

  781. are left on the street

  782. destitute,

  783. trying to beg

  784. for their existence.

  785. So what is the hope

  786. that Paul gives to them?

  787. Comfort each other

  788. with these words?

  789. It is not

  790. that God

  791. is going to fix

  792. their immediate

  793. situation.

  794. It is not

  795. that God

  796. is going to take away

  797. their suffering.

  798. It is not

  799. that God

  800. is going to make

  801. everything better

  802. and it's not

  803. that God

  804. is going to give

  805. them

  806. this abundance

  807. existence

  808. of things

  809. and safety

  810. from their

  811. environment.

  812. No.

  813. They will still

  814. move through

  815. the suffering.

  816. They will still

  817. experience the anxiety

  818. and the difficulty.

  819. But there is

  820. a future hope

  821. that Christ

  822. is coming

  823. and will capture

  824. them out

  825. of this world.

  826. Would that be

  827. hope for you?

  828. That can't

  829. be hope

  830. today

  831. if you're putting

  832. your hope

  833. in anything

  834. but Christ

  835. right now.

  836. If Christ

  837. is not

  838. your delight

  839. if he is not

  840. your source

  841. of joy

  842. then that

  843. would not be hope.

  844. That would just

  845. be agony.

  846. You mean

  847. I have to wait

  848. till Christ

  849. comes

  850. before all

  851. of this

  852. is fixed?

  853. the only

  854. way

  855. for that

  856. to be hope

  857. is if

  858. Christ

  859. is your joy.

  860. Paul puts

  861. it well

  862. this way

  863. in Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  864. chapter 2

  865. when he says

  866. for me

  867. to live

  868. is Christ

  869. and to die

  870. is gain.

  871. Is living

  872. for you

  873. captured

  874. by Christ

  875. this abiding

  876. relationship

  877. that we've

  878. been talking

  879. about all

  880. year?

  881. Is there

  882. this settling

  883. of your

  884. heart

  885. and a full

  886. weight of

  887. assurance

  888. and resting

  889. on the hope

  890. of his

  891. future coming?

  892. Kind of like

  893. Brooke

  894. Bronkowski

  895. who oriented

  896. the trajectory

  897. of her life

  898. it was

  899. dominated

  900. by that

  901. kind of

  902. hope

  903. and it

  904. saturated

  905. every decision

  906. at least

  907. that we

  908. know of

  909. the decisions

  910. that she

  911. made

  912. and God

  913. used

  914. her hope

  915. to change

  916. her world.

  917. May that

  918. be true

  919. of us.

  920. Let's pray.

  921. Thank you.
