  1. Well, as David has already alluded to, this is not a typical stage for a normal Sunday morning.

  2. !

  3. Standing center in this stage is a ziggurat, which has been used in many different ways.

  4. But this coming week, it's to help call attention or reminder to Genesis chapter 11 and the ziggurat

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  5. that stood there in Genesis chapter 11 where the people who were in existence at the time,

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  6. descendants of Noah, came to build.

  7. Now, there are two things that stand as observations for me,

  8. and maybe perhaps stand as an observation for you as well, when you see this behind me.

  9. First is there was a time when all the nations were combined and collected together.

  10. All descendants of Noah, there as one massive group speaking one language, part of one assembly,

  11. having one purpose, and there they were in this plane building this ziggurat.

  12. In one manner of speaking, they were fulfilling the command of God to be fruitful and multiply,

  13. and certainly they were numerous.

  14. Many, many people had come as one body collected to orchestrate this one purpose of building this monument to themselves.

  15. And this coming week, kind of playing off of the one nation,

  16. the incredible race that is one people all connected through not only Adam,

  17. but connected together because of Noah and his sons.

  18. Everyone represented in this room have a common ancestry in that we all go back to Noah.

  19. And here, as a signpost of that, is this ziggurat behind me.

  20. But it's also a remembrance or observation of the absolute rebellion of people.

  21. Because although they had been faithful in fulfilling one mandate to be fruitful and multiply,

  22. they had not been faithful to carry out the remaining mandate,

  23. and that was, and fill the earth.

  24. Instead, they decided to congregate together.

  25. Their goal was not to celebrate the glory of God as much as it was to celebrate the glory of their own personal accomplishments.

  26. As a matter of fact, we find in Genesis chapter 11, verse 4, it says,

    Genesis 11:4

  27. Mankind was bent on self-sufficiency, building a monument.

  28. Come and see.

  29. Look what we've done.

  30. Let's congregate together.

  31. Let's have a reason for staying put.

  32. So God, as God will do, helped to intervene and carry out his purposes

  33. because man was bent on doing his own thing.

  34. So God came and confused their language and, in a sense, also dispersed them across the face of the earth.

  35. God did for men what man would not do for himself.

  36. Well, that is exactly what we've been looking at in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  37. And if you are as encouraged as I am to understand the continuity of the scripture,

  38. that the same that happens in Genesis is the same pattern that we see of a faithful God

  39. who is the same yesterday, today, and forever,

  40. and continues to do for man what man cannot do for himself.

  41. We've been looking at Romans chapter 8, beginning in verse 1.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  42. It says,

  43. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  44. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

  45. For God did, and here it is,

  46. For God did what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.

  47. By sending his Son, in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin,

  48. he condemned sin in the flesh.

  49. In order that, the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us

  50. who walk not according to the law or according to the flesh,

  51. but according to the Spirit.

  52. You see, Jesus accomplished victory when man could not accomplish it for himself.

  53. And since the beginning of time, mankind has been bent on sin.

  54. And even though he provided a perfect and good standard,

  55. a righteous standard in the law,

  56. man, because of being weakened by his sinful flesh,

  57. rather than rising to the occasion,

  58. found himself consistently,

  59. and to man, woman, and child,

  60. every single individual who has ever walked the planet,

  61. unable to measure up to the standard.

  62. Because the law, instead of helping to encourage mankind to do what was right,

  63. actually was a fuse to lead him to greater sin.

  64. It was a fuse that led him to want the very things that were prohibited from him or her.

  65. Or on the flip side, to do what the law required,

  66. but then to rejoice in his own ability or her own ability

  67. to perform the standard that God had set,

  68. and thus to then turn it all around and make it about me,

  69. instead of making it about representing and glorifying God.

  70. So whether you were a law keeper or a law breaker,

  71. you were a sinner.

  72. Because, as we find in Isaiah,

  73. all our righteousnesses were as filthy rags

  74. before Jesus came to intervene.

  75. Jesus came to do what the law could not do.

  76. Not because the law was not good,

  77. but because we were unable to do what the law required.

  78. So as a matter of recap,

  79. I want to just bring us back to some of those same points we discussed last week.

  80. And then that will help as a segue to then get to our second point.

  81. I want us to talk about the significance of righteousness.

  82. The righteousness that comes, first of all, because of Jesus.

  83. And that is our first point this morning.

  84. We are righteous because of Jesus.

  85. And if you haven't already, please turn with me to Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  86. It's on the page...

  87. ...of Jesus.

  88. And there were two things that Jesus did

  89. in order to be the righteous fulfillment

  90. of what all that God expected.

  91. First, Jesus fulfilled the law.

  92. Jesus fulfilled the law first through His humanity.

  93. Fulfilled the law through His humanity.

  94. He sent Jesus as the incarnate Word of God.

  95. The Word of God made flesh for us.

  96. Jesus was able to accomplish in His flesh

  97. what no man, woman, or child was ever able to accomplish.

  98. But He must do that as a man,

  99. as weakened by sinful flesh.

  100. We find from Hebrews chapter 4, verse 15,

    Hebrews 4:15

  101. that He was tempted in all points,

  102. just as we are, yet without sin.

  103. If you're here this morning and you are saying,

  104. there is no way that anyone can really understand

  105. what I'm going through.

  106. No one can really appreciate the struggle that I'm facing.

  107. No one can really understand the burdens that I carry.

  108. And we find from this verse that Jesus can.

  109. He is the great high priest who can sympathize with your weaknesses.

  110. Because He was tempted in every way,

  111. just like you are, yet without sin.

  112. There is nothing that you can experience in life,

  113. no pressure, no injustice,

  114. no burden, no crisis,

  115. no conflict, no accusation,

  116. that you can endure or experience,

  117. that Jesus has not experienced Himself.

  118. And in His experience,

  119. He shows you and points you to the better way.

  120. Jesus was able to fulfill the law

  121. by being the sum total of all that the law expected.

  122. And He did that in His flesh.

  123. He did that in His humanity.

  124. But He also did that through His holiness.

  125. Fulfilled the law in His humanity.

  126. He fulfilled the law in His holiness.

  127. Because of His perfection,

  128. Jesus fulfilled all the righteous demands of the law.

  129. Not only fulfilling the demands of the law

  130. in an external and outward way,

  131. but fulfilling the demands of the law internally.

  132. His motivations, His purposes, His attitudes.

  133. I'm sure you've heard the story of that little boy

  134. who is told by his mother at the breakfast table

  135. to sit down.

  136. And she continued to say,

  137. Well, son, sit down.

  138. And He demanded to stand up.

  139. And finally, He sat down,

  140. and she thanked Him for His obedience.

  141. And He said to her,

  142. this little five-year-old,

  143. Well, I might be sitting down on the outside,

  144. but I am standing up on the inside.

  145. Jesus had perfect alignment,

  146. not only with His external attitudes,

  147. and actions,

  148. but His internal motivation,

  149. His internal purposes,

  150. His internal heart.

  151. He measured up to all that the law demanded.

  152. As we find in the Sermon on the Mount,

  153. where Jesus says,

  154. Well, you have heard it said,

  155. but I say to you,

  156. and raises the bar to the next level.

  157. You have said that you should not commit adultery,

  158. but I say to you,

  159. if you even look at a woman to lust after her,

  160. you have committed adultery in your heart.

  161. I say to you,

  162. you should not murder.

  163. Or the Bible says you should not murder.

  164. But I say to you,

  165. if you hate your brother,

  166. you have committed murder in your heart.

  167. Jesus,

  168. in His life and actions,

  169. but also in His internal motivation,

  170. demonstrated consistency

  171. in meeting and measuring up

  172. to all that the law demanded.

  173. Of course, the religious Jews

  174. were very good at meeting external expectations.

  175. They were very good at the piety

  176. that was required of those

  177. who were in their position.

  178. But Jesus identified

  179. the true corruption of their hearts

  180. when He says in Luke 11, 39,

  181. Now you Pharisees,

  182. you make the outside.

  183. ...to go and anoint a new king.

  184. King Saul had messed things up in Israel

  185. and God was searching for a new king.

  186. And Samuel goes to the family of Jesse

  187. and he begins to look at each of the sons

  188. and each one that he goes to,

  189. it is clear that they are

  190. head and shoulders above the rest

  191. and they're handsome and they're strong,

  192. but they're not the ones that God selected.

  193. The criteria that was important to God

  194. was as what we find in 1 Samuel 16, 7.

  195. Man looks on the outward appearance,

  196. but God looks at the heart.

  197. Jesus honored the law to the letter

  198. both internally and externally

  199. and as a result of fulfilling the law,

  200. Jesus positions Himself

  201. to condemn sin in the flesh.

  202. ...

  203. ...

  204. ...

  205. And we looked at this

  206. a bit last week.

  207. He condemns sin in His ministry

  208. as He heals individuals

  209. and says,

  210. Go and sin no more.

  211. The mandate that He gave to them

  212. was to live in the purity of life

  213. that the law demanded.

  214. Of course, they could not do that

  215. because of the corruption of the flesh,

  216. but that was still the overriding command

  217. that God had given to His people.

  218. He condemned sin in the flesh

  219. by calling people to righteousness,

  220. but He also condemned sin in the flesh

  221. through His ministry

  222. by reversing the effects

  223. that sin had on sin-ravaged bodies.

  224. Lazarus, who had died,

  225. Jairus' daughter who had died,

  226. and Jesus raised to show

  227. that He had power over the grave,

  228. power over sin and death.

  229. Jesus, in healing those

  230. who had blindness

  231. or lameness or leprosy,

  232. able to demonstrate

  233. that He alone

  234. had the ability

  235. to reverse the effects of sin

  236. and that to stand

  237. as an illustration

  238. of what He would do

  239. not on a temporary basis

  240. but on an eternal basis,

  241. a picture in a physical way

  242. of what He had hoped to do

  243. for them spiritually

  244. through His death.

  245. Through His ministry,

  246. He condemned sin

  247. by reversing the effects of sin,

  248. but finally and fully

  249. satisfying the righteous demands

  250. of God for sin

  251. by dying for sinners.

  252. He condemned sin in the flesh.

  253. Jesus agreed with the Father

  254. that sin was worthy

  255. of eternal judgment.

  256. 1 Peter 3.18 says,

  257. For Christ also suffered

  258. once for sins,

  259. the righteous for the unrighteous,

  260. that He might bring us to God,

  261. being put to death in the flesh

  262. but made alive in the Spirit.

  263. Romans 5.6-9 says this,

  264. For while we were still weak,

  265. at the right time Christ died

  266. for the ungodly.

  267. Since therefore we have now

  268. been justified by His blood,

  269. much more shall we be saved

  270. by Him from the wrath of God.

  271. It is because of the work

  272. of Jesus' death

  273. that Paul concludes

  274. there is now no condemnation

  275. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  276. It is because of the final

  277. and full work of Christ

  278. on Calvary

  279. to purchase for us redemption.

  280. Well, what does this righteousness mean for us?

  281. There are so many things

  282. that we could say.

  283. First, this righteousness means

  284. our salvation is secure.

  285. If you are in Christ today,

  286. the righteousness of Christ

  287. rests on you

  288. and your salvation is secure

  289. because there is nothing more

  290. that is required.

  291. The debt has been fully paid.

  292. So there is nothing that you need to do

  293. to work your way to God.

  294. There is nothing else that is demanded

  295. because Jesus paid it all.

  296. All to Him I owe.

  297. And if you are in Christ,

  298. all to Him you owe as well

  299. because Jesus paid it all.

  300. And if He is the full

  301. and complete righteousness

  302. that is demanded by God,

  303. there is nothing left to do

  304. so your salvation in Christ

  305. is secure.

  306. It should provide for you

  307. not only peace of mind

  308. but also motivation for worship,

  309. urgency in the Christian life,

  310. cause for devotion

  311. because Jesus provided a way

  312. that is secure.

  313. It also means that righteousness

  314. is obtained through faith

  315. and not through law keeping.

  316. And that's important.

  317. Righteousness is obtained

  318. through faith

  319. and not through law keeping.

  320. We touched on this

  321. a couple of weeks ago

  322. when we were looking through

  323. no condemnation

  324. and we saw in Romans chapter 4,

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  325. we saw that Abraham was righteous

  326. because of faith.

  327. Faith was counted to him

  328. as righteousness,

  329. not the things that he had done

  330. in terms of circumcision

  331. or an offering Isaac

  332. as he was commanded to do.

  333. It wasn't his works

  334. that merited any kind of favor

  335. in God's eyes.

  336. It was faith alone

  337. that stood as the standing precedent

  338. for us,

  339. for those who seek to be blessed

  340. like Abraham

  341. and being called children of God.

  342. We can be children of God

  343. in Christ through faith.

  344. And righteousness is obtained

  345. through faith

  346. and not through your law keeping.

  347. You cannot add

  348. and you cannot subtract

  349. to perfection.

  350. There is nothing more to be done

  351. that Christ has not already accomplished.

  352. It is his righteousness,

  353. not yours,

  354. that stands in God the Father's eyes

  355. as being acceptable and pleasing.

  356. It is credited to your account

  357. but is unaffected by anything

  358. that you could do.

  359. It rests on him

  360. fulfilling the law's demands.

  361. It rests on his sacrifice,

  362. paying the full price

  363. of sin's penalty,

  364. obtaining for us

  365. what we could never pay.

  366. Hallelujah.

  367. Jesus' sacrifice

  368. was not about temporary benefits,

  369. though,

  370. of just removing sin's effects.

  371. And that's where we begin

  372. to move next.

  373. It was not just about

  374. declaring you righteous.

  375. It was about making you righteous

  376. through the power

  377. of the Holy Spirit.

  378. And that's where we go next.

  379. Not only the righteousness of Jesus,

  380. but now we are righteous

  381. because of the Spirit.

  382. Righteous because of the Spirit.

  383. Notice, picking up in verse 4,

  384. in order that the righteous requirements

  385. of the law

  386. might be fulfilled in us

  387. who walk not according to the flesh

  388. but according to the Spirit.

  389. God is after complete transformation.

  390. God is interested in the gospel

  391. having power to save you

  392. from everything that is corrupt

  393. in this world.

  394. We're going to see that more

  395. in verses 5 to verse 11.

  396. Verses 5 to 8 speak

  397. of the transformation of God

  398. in transforming our mind.

  399. In verses 9 to 11

  400. speak of God

  401. transforming our bodies.

  402. Mind and body

  403. all align to the purposes of God

  404. transformed by the Holy Spirit

  405. in helping us

  406. to be a sanctified people.

  407. But tucked between verse 3

  408. and verse 5

  409. is verse 4.

  410. And you say,

  411. oh, you're a rocket scientist.

  412. You must be really smart.

  413. Good job there, Andrew.

  414. What's difficult about verse 4

  415. is the way it starts.

  416. It says,

  417. in order that

  418. the righteous requirement

  419. of the law

  420. might be fulfilled in us.

  421. Well,

  422. whose righteousness is that?

  423. Is that Christ's righteousness

  424. applied to our account?

  425. Or is that the Spirit's righteousness

  426. working itself out

  427. through a transformed life?

  428. Well, I want to make a case

  429. for the fact that

  430. it is personal righteousness.

  431. It is Spirit-transformed righteousness.

  432. And I want to give you

  433. three reasons, I think,

  434. why that is the case.

  435. Now, I want to be really careful

  436. because theologians

  437. that are much smarter than me

  438. differ on this point.

  439. But I think there's a really good case

  440. for seeing it as personal righteousness.

  441. It really boils down to two words.

  442. The first word is the word fulfilled,

  443. which is completed.

  444. And as we would evaluate the text,

  445. we would begin this thing to ourselves,

  446. now, time out.

  447. The only one who has fulfilled

  448. or completed

  449. or met the perfect standard of righteousness

  450. is Jesus himself.

  451. Obviously,

  452. this is infused righteousness

  453. of Christ on us.

  454. righteousness.

  455. The difficulty with that is

  456. that it also uses

  457. the words in us,

  458. which would indicate

  459. it is not for us.

  460. It is actually righteousness

  461. that's being worked out

  462. from within.

  463. It's personal.

  464. I want you to notice,

  465. first of all,

  466. verses 1 and 2

  467. and then verses 3 and 4.

  468. I want you to notice,

  469. first of all,

  470. the parallel nature

  471. of these verses.

  472. Notice the similar words

  473. that are used.

  474. In verse 1,

  475. notice,

  476. no condemnation.

  477. In verse 3,

  478. notice,

  479. he condemned sin in the flesh.

  480. Obviously,

  481. verse 1 and verse 3

  482. are synonymous.

  483. Speaking and describing

  484. the same thing.

  485. Notice in verse 2

  486. that the law of the spirit of life

  487. has set you free.

  488. And notice in verse 4,

  489. who walk according

  490. to the spirit.

  491. The parallel nature.

  492. It seems to indicate

  493. that what is ever happening

  494. in verse 2

  495. is also happening

  496. in verse 4.

  497. Notice reason number 2.

  498. Notice the cause

  499. and effect relationship

  500. that is reinforced

  501. in 1 and 2

  502. and also repeated then

  503. in verse 3 and 4.

  504. As we spoke

  505. in previous weeks,

  506. we saw that the reason

  507. for no condemnation,

  508. the cause

  509. for no condemnation

  510. is met by the evidence,

  511. the result that we see

  512. in verse 2,

  513. that the law

  514. of the spirit of life

  515. is the one

  516. who is working out

  517. sanctification,

  518. a renewed life

  519. that is happening in us.

  520. Justification

  521. precedes sanctification

  522. in verses 1 and 2.

  523. Notice a similar thing

  524. that is going on

  525. in verses 3 and 4.

  526. The cause and effect

  527. relationship.

  528. We see in verse 3

  529. that the cause

  530. for what happened

  531. is God sent his son

  532. in the likeness

  533. of sinful flesh

  534. and for sin

  535. he condemned

  536. sin in the flesh.

  537. That is the reason

  538. for what we find now

  539. in verse 4.

  540. the cause

  541. or the result

  542. is in order

  543. that

  544. that we might,

  545. the righteous requirement

  546. might be fulfilled

  547. in us.

  548. The final reason,

  549. reason number 3,

  550. is notice

  551. the inseparable link

  552. between the phrases.

  553. Verse 1 begins

  554. with therefore.

  555. Verse 2 begins

  556. with for.

  557. Verse 3 begins

  558. with for.

  559. Verse 4 begins

  560. with in order that.

  561. Notice the prepositions

  562. and the purpose clauses

  563. that are used throughout

  564. but then

  565. now in the middle

  566. of verse 4

  567. there is no transitional word

  568. which means

  569. that it is connected

  570. to the first phrase.

  571. Who walk

  572. not according

  573. to the flesh

  574. but according

  575. to the spirit

  576. then describes

  577. what's happening

  578. at the beginning

  579. of verse 4.

  580. Now you might be saying

  581. Andrew,

  582. you are so technical.

  583. what is the point

  584. of all of this?

  585. The point of all of this

  586. is to help you

  587. see that you can

  588. do this for yourself.

  589. Okay?

  590. As you begin

  591. to take notice

  592. of what is happening

  593. in the text

  594. you can begin

  595. to pray

  596. that God helps you

  597. lead you by the spirit

  598. to arrive

  599. at certain conclusions

  600. and I believe

  601. the right conclusion

  602. the best

  603. the best conclusion

  604. that we can draw

  605. from verse 4

  606. is that verse 4

  607. is actually talking

  608. about personal righteousness

  609. that the Holy Spirit

  610. intends to give to us

  611. because he wants

  612. not only to declare

  613. us righteous

  614. he wants

  615. to make you

  616. righteous.

  617. God is not

  618. interested

  619. in so much

  620. the positional

  621. righteousness

  622. although that is

  623. important obviously.

  624. He is not interested

  625. in distant righteousness

  626. that is somebody

  627. else's righteousness

  628. although that is

  629. important

  630. to lead us

  631. to the next step.

  632. God is interested

  633. in practical

  634. real

  635. tangible

  636. true

  637. sincere

  638. righteousness

  639. that you have

  640. because of the work

  641. of the gospel

  642. in your life.

  643. Because God

  644. is living in you

  645. just like

  646. the spirit

  647. was living

  648. in Jesus.

  649. the same

  650. resources

  651. that were

  652. given to Christ

  653. to live

  654. the righteous

  655. life

  656. are given

  657. to you

  658. so you would

  659. expect

  660. the same

  661. results.

  662. And certainly

  663. that is what we see.

  664. We see

  665. this cause

  666. and effect

  667. that God

  668. has stated

  669. and declared

  670. righteousness

  671. for his people

  672. so they have

  673. right and perfect

  674. standing

  675. before God

  676. but he is also

  677. in doing that

  678. given his Holy Spirit

  679. to work

  680. real

  681. and practical

  682. and true

  683. righteousness

  684. out in you

  685. so that when people

  686. see you

  687. they don't see you

  688. they see God

  689. so that God

  690. gets the glory.

  691. That's the point.

  692. And up until this point

  693. no man

  694. woman or child

  695. has ever been able

  696. to work righteousness

  697. on their own

  698. because all their

  699. righteousnesses

  700. were as filthy rags

  701. but now

  702. because of Christ

  703. and because of justification

  704. and now the work

  705. of the Spirit

  706. in our life

  707. we can actually

  708. work out

  709. some righteousness

  710. in our life.

  711. We have a choice

  712. to make

  713. as we find

  714. in Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  715. We are not

  716. slaves to sin anymore

  717. we are slaves

  718. to God.

  719. Our members

  720. belong to him

  721. and as we saw

  722. in verse 2

  723. the law

  724. of the Spirit

  725. of life

  726. has set you free

  727. from the law

  728. of sin and death.

  729. the power

  730. of the Spirit

  731. is working

  732. to overcome

  733. all of the sin

  734. and corruption

  735. of your life

  736. to help lead you

  737. to real

  738. and true righteousness

  739. so that when people

  740. see you

  741. they see

  742. the gospel

  743. and when they hear you

  744. there is consistency

  745. between what you say

  746. and what they see.

  747. There is evidence

  748. just like with Jesus

  749. in performing miracles

  750. that they confirmed

  751. the work of God

  752. in his life

  753. they confirmed

  754. the message

  755. of God

  756. on him.

  757. The same is true

  758. for you and for me

  759. when we talk about

  760. the power of the gospel

  761. we talk about

  762. Jesus' ability

  763. to save us

  764. from sin

  765. and then they see it

  766. show up

  767. in our relationships

  768. they see it show up

  769. in the way we treat

  770. our spouses

  771. they see it show up

  772. in the way

  773. we treat our children

  774. they see it show up

  775. in the way

  776. that we work

  777. they say

  778. God must be

  779. living in them

  780. the gospel

  781. must be true

  782. and that is the point

  783. of righteousness

  784. being fulfilled

  785. in you

  786. and in me.

  787. God desires

  788. for us

  789. not to be

  790. enslaved by sin

  791. but to be

  792. given

  793. and

  794. enslaved

  795. to righteousness

  796. the spirit

  797. working

  798. and directing

  799. and guiding

  800. our lives

  801. helping us be

  802. the kinds of people

  803. that God has created

  804. us to be

  805. no longer

  806. tainted

  807. no longer

  808. polluted

  809. no longer

  810. self-oriented

  811. but oriented

  812. to

  813. the glory

  814. of our savior

  815. it's not only

  816. a personal righteousness

  817. it is also

  818. a progressive

  819. righteousness

  820. a progressive

  821. righteousness

  822. righteousness

  823. notice it says

  824. that the second

  825. part of verse 4

  826. who walk

  827. not according

  828. to the flesh

  829. but according

  830. to the spirit

  831. this word

  832. walk

  833. is

  834. peripeteo

  835. which is

  836. a

  837. present active

  838. participle

  839. and the

  840. the benefit

  841. of that

  842. is it talks

  843. about and speaks

  844. of a life

  845. that continues

  846. it is

  847. a life

  848. that is not

  849. static

  850. but a life

  851. that is

  852. dynamic

  853. it is moving

  854. it is active

  855. it is progressing

  856. it's not satisfied

  857. with how things

  858. are today

  859. it's not always

  860. looking back

  861. at what you

  862. accomplished

  863. for God

  864. in the years

  865. gone by

  866. it's not

  867. what Paul says

  868. looking to the

  869. things behind me

  870. but looking forward

  871. to the things

  872. that Christ wants

  873. to continue

  874. to accomplish

  875. not being satisfied

  876. with what God

  877. has already done

  878. in your life

  879. but looking for ways

  880. for God

  881. for God

  882. to make you

  883. more

  884. like him

  885. and I love

  886. this word

  887. walk

  888. because if it

  889. was run

  890. it would not

  891. be a word

  892. for me

  893. walking

  894. helps us

  895. see the

  896. consistency

  897. of life

  898. that God

  899. is calling

  900. us

  901. to live

  902. we see

  903. this all

  904. over Romans

  905. and we don't

  906. have time

  907. to look at them

  908. but I just

  909. want to call

  910. your attention

  911. to a few

  912. Romans chapter 6

    Romans 6:4

  913. verse 4

  914. says this

  915. we were buried

  916. therefore with him

  917. by baptism

  918. into death

  919. in order that

  920. just as Christ

  921. was raised

  922. from the dead

  923. by the glory

  924. of the father

  925. we too

  926. might walk

  927. in newness

  928. of life

  929. that's what

  930. Jesus' death

  931. and resurrection

  932. accomplished

  933. for you

  934. not just a

  935. declaration

  936. of righteousness

  937. but real

  938. righteousness

  939. through the

  940. power

  941. of the

  942. Holy Spirit

  943. we see it

  944. in Romans

    Romans 14:15

  945. chapter 14

  946. verse 15

  947. we see it

  948. in Romans

    Romans 13:13

  949. chapter 13

  950. verses 13

  951. and 14

  952. okay I just

  953. want to

  954. just take notes

  955. read them later

  956. we don't have

  957. time for them

  958. this morning

  959. Galatians

    Galatians 5:16

  960. chapter 5

  961. verse 16

  962. says

  963. but I say

  964. walk

  965. by the spirit

  966. and you

  967. will not

  968. gratify

  969. the desires

  970. of the flesh

  971. there is

  972. a way

  973. of life

  974. that must

  975. mark

  976. every believer

  977. not because

  978. you muster

  979. in yourself

  980. some ability

  981. to carry out

  982. some supposed

  983. righteousness

  984. but because

  985. there is a

  986. yielding

  987. of your

  988. life

  989. to the

  990. power

  991. of God

  992. allowing

  993. his power

  994. his spirit

  995. to work

  996. through you

  997. to create

  998. in you

  999. what you

  1000. cannot

  1001. create

  1002. for yourself

  1003. so much

  1004. to say

  1005. and the

  1006. greatest

  1007. fulfillment

  1008. of the

  1009. law

  1010. is love

  1011. the

  1012. culmination

  1013. of the

  1014. entire

  1015. Old Testament

  1016. and law

  1017. is encapsulated

  1018. in two

  1019. commands

  1020. love the

  1021. Lord your

  1022. God

  1023. with all

  1024. your heart

  1025. soul

  1026. and mind

  1027. love your

  1028. neighbor

  1029. as yourself

  1030. you cannot

  1031. do this

  1032. on your

  1033. own

  1034. we are

  1035. called

  1036. to a

  1037. standard

  1038. that totally

  1039. blows us

  1040. up

  1041. who has

  1042. ever imagined

  1043. that we

  1044. could love

  1045. our enemies

  1046. but that's

  1047. what Jesus

  1048. calls us

  1049. to

  1050. who could

  1051. ever imagine

  1052. that you

  1053. could love

  1054. your unjust

  1055. employer

  1056. but that's

  1057. what Jesus

  1058. calls us

  1059. to in

  1060. chapter 2

  1061. verses 18

  1062. through 23

  1063. who could

  1064. ever imagine

  1065. that you

  1066. could love

  1067. somebody who

  1068. is not like

  1069. you and

  1070. that's exactly

  1071. what God

  1072. calls us to

  1073. in James

    James 2 chapter mention

  1074. chapter 2

  1075. love that

  1076. is impartial

  1077. love that

  1078. is not

  1079. prejudiced

  1080. and that

  1081. is so

  1082. in us

  1083. isn't it

  1084. but who

  1085. could ever

  1086. imagine

  1087. that we

  1088. could love

  1089. our brothers

  1090. especially

  1091. those

  1092. who offend

  1093. us

  1094. and hurt

  1095. us

  1096. and take

  1097. advantage

  1098. of us

  1099. but in

  1100. 1 John

    1 John 4:19

  1101. chapter 4

  1102. verses 19

  1103. and 21

  1104. it says

  1105. we love

  1106. because he

  1107. first loved

  1108. us

  1109. if anyone

  1110. says I

  1111. love God

  1112. and hates

  1113. his brother

  1114. he is a

  1115. liar

  1116. for he

  1117. who does

  1118. not love

  1119. his brother

  1120. whom he

  1121. has seen

  1122. cannot love

  1123. God

  1124. whom he

  1125. has not

  1126. seen

  1127. and this

  1128. commandment

  1129. we have

  1130. from him

  1131. whoever

  1132. loves God

  1133. must also

  1134. love his

  1135. brother

  1136. if you

  1137. don't love

  1138. your spouse

  1139. if you

  1140. don't love

  1141. your parents

  1142. if you

  1143. don't love

  1144. a brother

  1145. or sister

  1146. in this

  1147. room

  1148. John

  1149. calls

  1150. into

  1151. question

  1152. if you

  1153. really

  1154. love

  1155. God

  1156. at all

  1157. and if

  1158. you are

  1159. loved

  1160. by God

  1161. you will

  1162. demonstrate

  1163. the character

  1164. of one

  1165. who is

  1166. filled by

  1167. God

  1168. and the

  1169. fruit of

  1170. the spirit

  1171. is first

  1172. love

  1173. well what does

  1174. this righteousness

  1175. mean to us

  1176. that brings us

  1177. to our time

  1178. of communion

  1179. first

  1180. this righteousness

  1181. means for us

  1182. a reminder

  1183. of the

  1184. body

  1185. and blood

  1186. of Jesus

  1187. and the

  1188. costliness

  1189. of sin

  1190. it reminds us

  1191. of how

  1192. gruesome

  1193. and how

  1194. disgusting

  1195. sin is

  1196. to God

  1197. it caused

  1198. him to

  1199. bring his

  1200. son

  1201. and to

  1202. crucify him

  1203. on the cross

  1204. he was bruised

  1205. for our

  1206. iniquity

  1207. he was

  1208. crushed

  1209. for our

  1210. transgressions

  1211. he did

  1212. that

  1213. because

  1214. of the

  1215. costliness

  1216. of sin

  1217. I would like

  1218. to invite

  1219. the deacons

  1220. to come

  1221. forward

  1222. as I read

  1223. chapter 9

  1224. verses 15

  1225. to 22

  1226. this is

  1227. perhaps

  1228. another way

  1229. to look

  1230. at our

  1231. communion

  1232. passage

  1233. and as

  1234. they come

  1235. I'm going

  1236. to read

  1237. it says

  1238. this

  1239. verse 18

  1240. Hebrews 9

  1241. therefore

  1242. not even

  1243. the first

  1244. covenant

  1245. was inaugurated

  1246. without

  1247. blood

  1248. for when

  1249. every

  1250. commandment

  1251. of the

  1252. law

  1253. had been

  1254. declared

  1255. by Moses

  1256. to all

  1257. the people

  1258. he took

  1259. the blood

  1260. of the

  1261. calves

  1262. and goats

  1263. with water

  1264. and scarlet

  1265. wool

  1266. and hyssop

  1267. and sprinkled

  1268. both the

  1269. book itself

  1270. and the

  1271. people

  1272. saying

  1273. this is

  1274. the blood

  1275. of the

  1276. covenant

  1277. that God

  1278. has commanded

  1279. for you

  1280. that sound

  1281. familiar

  1282. and in the

  1283. same way

  1284. he sprinkled

  1285. with blood

  1286. both the

  1287. tent

  1288. and the

  1289. vessels

  1290. used in

  1291. worship

  1292. indeed

  1293. under the

  1294. law

  1295. almost

  1296. everything

  1297. is purified

  1298. with blood
