  1. Well, I've been greatly helped over the years through good biographies, and so I have some here.

  2. I actually read about some godly people. I was never really a history kind of guy growing up. I liked math and science. I wasn't really a literature and grammar person, and so history didn't really sit well with me.

  3. But as I have grown up a little bit, I have come to appreciate more and more the beauty and the greatness of God showing up in the lives of saints of old.

  4. Men and women, good biographies have helped to shake me out of my own complacency and helped me to realize how small I am compared to the men and women of old.

  5. And I would commend that to you. I'll get to that towards the end of the message.

  6. But I want to begin just with a story about one of my heroes. George Mueller was one of them.

  7. He lived in the 1800s, and he lived till he was in his mid-90s.

  8. A guy that till the day he died, he was actively pursuing a life of joy in God and a life of service to God.

  9. Talk about a man of faith.

  10. And it didn't begin that way for him because he didn't really come to Christ until he was in his mid-20s.

  11. But once he made that commitment to Christ, and once he began to see who God was from the Scripture,

  12. it began to change everything about the way he lived.

  13. He saw that the Bible was talking about a real person,

  14. and he saw and understood that the Bible's description of God was meant to be acted on.

  15. Not just filling up the reservoir of data and knowledge in our minds,

  16. but the knowledge was sufficient for faith.

  17. It was sufficient for action.

  18. Here is what he says at the very beginning of his time as a believer,

  19. and this is the mission statement that guided him throughout the rest of his life.

  20. He says,

  21. I have joyfully dedicated my whole life to the object of exemplifying

  22. how much may be accomplished by prayer and faith.

  23. I have joyfully dedicated my whole life to the object of exemplifying

  24. how much may be accomplished by prayer and faith.

  25. Now, that mission statement began as a new believer in one form

  26. and resulted in greater steps of obedience as he was tender and receptive to put those things to work.

  27. As he continued to take baby steps into believing God

  28. and trusting that God would do what he promised to do,

  29. at the end of his life looking back,

  30. you could see the landscape of amazing accomplishments,

  31. not because of George Mueller,

  32. but because of George Mueller's willingness and commitment to trust God to do amazing things.

  33. To make good on the promises that God had given to George throughout the Scripture.

  34. Now, I'm sure that many of you are aware of the commitment that George had to orphan care.

  35. It started small and continued to grow throughout the course of his life.

  36. There were just a couple people, a couple young children that he adopted into his family,

  37. and that grew into dozens and then to hundreds and then to literally thousands,

  38. so that during the course of his life he had as many as 5,000 kids at one time that he was helping to care for.

  39. His commitment was that he would never ask anyone for money,

  40. but that he would depend fully on the ability of God to answer the requests of his life,

  41. the prayers that he would pray,

  42. that God was sufficient to minister and to take care of the needs that George would have.

  43. He opened his orphan house with these three goals in mind.

  44. The first is that God may be glorified in so furnishing the means as to show that it is not vain thing to trust in him.

  45. Two, that the spiritual welfare of the fatherless and motherless children may be promoted.

  46. And that's a biblical thing.

  47. And number three, that their temporal good may be secured.

  48. Now, there is story upon story of how God showed up for George Mueller.

  49. As a matter of fact, he has a journal that records over 10,000 answers to prayer that he had through the course of his life.

  50. Specific requests that George had made that God fulfilled in very deliberate and specific ways.

  51. But one story kind of gives an idea of what we're talking about.

  52. A gentleman came and was visiting the orphanage and saw how many kids there were in this orphanage.

  53. And he asks the lady who was overseeing this particular dormitory.

  54. There were several of them.

  55. They couldn't all fit in one spot.

  56. And he asks her and says to her,

  57. Of course, you cannot carry out these institutions without some good stock of funds, correct?

  58. And the gentleman added,

  59. Have you good stock?

  60. Meaning, do you have good resources?

  61. Do you have a bank account that's full?

  62. No.

  63. The response was this.

  64. Our funds are deposited in a bank that will not break.

  65. The reply drew tears from the eyes of the lady and the man, sorry, the man who asked the question.

  66. And then a gift was given of five pounds, five dollars at the time, from the pocket of this gentleman.

  67. A donation that was very timely because at the time there was not even a penny to be spared in the house.

  68. But a commitment to the faithfulness of God to see this ministry through.

  69. And there were countless opportunities, countless times in which the children would sit down at the table with nothing to eat.

  70. A knock would come at the door.

  71. And a delivery man said,

  72. My truck broke down outside and I would love to donate my milk and bread to you.

  73. And God faithfully supplied the needs of those who were in this orphanage.

  74. Time and time again,

  75. A commitment to faith demonstrated the faithfulness of God, the trustworthiness of God to come through at every moment.

  76. What I'd like us to understand is the correlation now to our passage in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  77. Because the passage that we're going to be focusing on this morning, Romans chapter 8 verses 5 to 8,

    Romans 8:5–8

  78. begin to help us understand the significance of our thinking.

  79. The significance of recognizing how fundamental our mind and our thoughts are in relationship to the spiritual life.

  80. What you think about God and what you believe about God will help indicate for you where you stand with God.

  81. So if you would turn with me to Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  82. Let me read this passage for us and we'll begin our study.

  83. It says,

  84. In order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh,

  85. but according to the spirit.

  86. For those who live according to the flesh set their mind on the things of the flesh.

  87. But those who live according to the spirit set their minds on the things of the spirit.

  88. For to set your mind on the flesh is death, but to set your mind on the spirit is life and peace.

  89. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile towards God.

  90. It does not submit to God's law.

  91. Indeed it cannot.

  92. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

  93. As we've been walking through this chapter together, there have been some truths that have come to the surface.

  94. We've begun to recognize the significance of the work of Jesus Christ in declaring for us no condemnation.

  95. It is a work that Christ has accomplished in our place and in our stead so that we did not have to bear the condemnation that we deserved.

  96. And that as a result of the saving work of Christ, the declarative work of Christ,

  97. the formal doctrinal theological term justification, having declared us righteous, now leads to something else.

  98. It leads to a sanctifying work, a setting apart work, a purifying work that happens in our life through the power of the Holy Spirit.

  99. Paul has preceded this conversation in Romans chapter 8 to help us recognize that this struggle that we face now as those who are believers,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  100. those who are in Christ, is not an easy struggle.

  101. He says in Romans chapter 7, as he's talking a little bit about this struggle,

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  102. he compares it to a war that is raging within you.

  103. Romans chapter 7 verses 22 and 23 says this,

    Romans 7:22

  104. For I delight in the law of God in my inner being, but I see in my members another law,

  105. waging war against the law of my mind,

  106. making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

  107. He follows this in a later passage in 2 Corinthians.

  108. He describes this similar struggle using similar terms in 2 Corinthians chapter 10.

    2 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  109. Listen as I read, beginning in verse 2,

  110. I beg you that when I am present, I may not have to show boldness with confidence,

  111. as I count on showing against some of you who suspect us of walking according to the flesh.

  112. For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.

  113. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh,

  114. but have divine power to destroy arguments.

  115. We destroy arguments in every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God

  116. and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

  117. being ready to punish every disobedience when your obedience is complete.

  118. So I'm going to frame our conversation this morning

  119. in points that describe the battle that we are in.

  120. It is a spiritual struggle.

  121. It is you are in spiritual war against the heavenly places,

  122. against the schemes of the devil,

  123. who wants to come in and bombard you with temptations,

  124. but also a struggle against your own flesh,

  125. the difficulties you have of reverting back to your old way of life,

  126. and the Holy Spirit, in fact, trying to overcome and help you

  127. to live the pure, righteous life that he has called you

  128. and enabled you to live.

  129. But first, I want you to notice this morning

  130. that this battle that we're in is a battle for the mind.

  131. It is a battle for the mind.

  132. For those who live according to the flesh

  133. set their minds on the things of the flesh.

  134. But those who live according to the Spirit

  135. set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

  136. It is a battle for your mind.

  137. First and foremost,

  138. what you think is what you believe.

  139. And what you believe is what you'll act on.

  140. We said this in the tail end of our series in 1 John.

  141. You are what you believe.

  142. Not what you say you believe,

  143. but what you, in fact, really believe.

  144. It will play out in how you live.

  145. Just as it played out for George Mueller.

  146. His commitment to believe that God was able and sufficient to provide

  147. led him to trust God in very difficult and hard circumstances

  148. that seemed impossible,

  149. but his commitment to faith demonstrated the trustworthiness of God.

  150. It is a battle for your mind.

  151. There are really only two possibilities in life.

  152. You are either one who is of the flesh,

  153. one who is living consistently by the flesh,

  154. and in this passage,

  155. as Paul is beginning to demarcate between these two groups of individuals,

  156. these are unregenerate people.

  157. Those who are not in Christ,

  158. and thus those who are condemned.

  159. The other group, of course,

  160. is those who are in the Spirit.

  161. Those who demonstrate a consistency,

  162. a pattern of life,

  163. of an affection for the things of God.

  164. Allowing the Holy Spirit to speak into their lives,

  165. and to guide,

  166. and to govern their thoughts,

  167. their beliefs,

  168. and their activities.

  169. Those then would be the ones who are regenerate.

  170. Those who are in Christ,

  171. and thus those who are pronounced no condemnation.

  172. It all begins, though,

  173. with how we think.

  174. Paul uses several words in this verse

  175. to help us understand the significance

  176. of the permanence of what he's talking about.

  177. He uses the word to live,

  178. which is given to us in a present active participle.

  179. He wants us to recognize

  180. that this is an ongoing way of life.

  181. A perpetual, present activity of life.

  182. Those who are living in a way

  183. that is giving themselves to fleshly thinking.

  184. He also uses the word according to,

  185. which refers to their basic spiritual welfare.

  186. What is their bent?

  187. What is their tendency?

  188. What is their likelihood or orientation

  189. in relationship to how they think?

  190. Are they those who think according to the flesh,

  191. or are they those who think according to the Spirit,

  192. governed by the things of the flesh,

  193. or of the Spirit?

  194. And the third word that is used consistently

  195. throughout these next several verses

  196. is the word to set your mind,

  197. to establish or to set something.

  198. It, again, refers to basic orientation,

  199. a thought pattern.

  200. It's not dealing specifically

  201. with the intellectual way of life,

  202. but it is dealing with attitudes.

  203. It's dealing with affections and reasoning.

  204. What governs the way you make decisions?

  205. What helps to lead you and guide you

  206. in the purposes that you have in life?

  207. It's used, this word used four times

  208. in these four verses.

  209. Maybe you would remember this verse

  210. in Colossians chapter four, verse two.

  211. Set your mind on things above, right?

  212. Not on the things that are on the earth,

  213. for you died and your life is hidden

  214. with Christ in God.

  215. Same word.

  216. You're, to establish or to set your mind

  217. on the things that are either fleshly

  218. or the things that are spiritual.

  219. Now, to be clear, I want us to understand

  220. and recognize that there are times in life,

  221. and Paul has even talked about this

  222. in Romans chapter seven.

  223. There are times in life where even though

  224. the pattern of life is set in thinking

  225. about the Spirit, where we fall into,

  226. we fall into areas of sin and thinking

  227. according to the philosophies of the world.

  228. We get caught up in fleshly,

  229. earthly, temporal pleasures.

  230. We're not guided by the Holy Spirit

  231. in our affections, and we sin.

  232. Paul is clear about how that war is raging

  233. in his own life, and he says that he wants

  234. to do, in chapter seven, he desires to do

  235. what God calls him to do,

  236. but he even sees in his own members

  237. a law that is waging war against the members

  238. of his mind, making him captive to the law

  239. of sin that dwells in him.

  240. There are times where even godly people

  241. step in to sin.

  242. But the consistent pattern of those

  243. who are walking after the Spirit

  244. and living according to the Spirit

  245. is those who are setting their minds

  246. on the things of the Spirit.

  247. Maybe if I can put this in movie vernacular.

  248. We've been watching Lord of the Rings

  249. and The Hobbit at our house

  250. over the last couple of weeks.

  251. Now, I think that movie series

  252. does a great job helping us to understand

  253. the significance of the ring.

  254. How many of you watched?

  255. You don't have to raise your hand.

  256. You've watched.

  257. All right, good.

  258. I have a taker back there in the back.

  259. Thank you.

  260. You know the journey of the ring,

  261. taking that ring back to Mordor, right?

  262. And dumping it into the fires of Mordor

  263. to finally remove this blemish,

  264. this spot, this stain on the earth.

  265. But regardless of who takes the ring,

  266. they are overcome.

  267. By the burden of sin.

  268. Whether you're an elf,

  269. or whether you're a wizard,

  270. or whether you're a dwarf,

  271. wherever you might be,

  272. even The Hobbit,

  273. even Frodo at the very end

  274. is unable to cast that ring

  275. into the fires of Mordor.

  276. It totally changes the heart and perspective.

  277. It is a gripping anxiety

  278. that overcomes everyone who carries the ring.

  279. The same is true

  280. only to a greater degree

  281. the corruption that happens

  282. of sin over an individual.

  283. And Paul wants

  284. to leave no room for confusion.

  285. Those who deliberately

  286. and consistently

  287. walk and live according to the flesh

  288. demonstrate

  289. that their mind

  290. is actually set on things of the flesh.

  291. But those who consistently

  292. live according to the Spirit,

  293. the Spirit's life

  294. will show up inside

  295. and overcome

  296. the sin barrier

  297. that's in their heart

  298. and help to lead them

  299. and enable them

  300. to godliness

  301. and purity.

  302. We find some of the corrupting force

  303. of sin

  304. found in Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4:17–20

  305. verses 17 to 20.

  306. Look at some of these descriptive words

  307. in this passage.

  308. Now this I say

  309. and testify in the Lord

  310. that you must no longer walk

  311. as the Gentiles do

  312. in the futility of their minds.

  313. They are darkened

  314. in their understanding,

  315. alienated from the life of God

  316. because of the ignorance

  317. that is in them.

  318. Due to the hardness

  319. of their hearts

  320. they have become callous

  321. and given themselves

  322. up to sensuality,

  323. greedy to practice

  324. every kind of impurity.

  325. But that is not

  326. the way you learned Christ.

  327. So those who are

  328. in the flesh

  329. have no choice

  330. but to walk

  331. in the way of ignorance,

  332. to walk in a way

  333. of futility,

  334. to demonstrate

  335. their true character

  336. of those

  337. who are alienated

  338. from God.

  339. The passage continues

  340. in verses 22 to 24

  341. to begin to describe

  342. now the work

  343. of the spirit

  344. in your life.

  345. You're to put off

  346. the old self

  347. which belongs

  348. to your former manner

  349. of life

  350. and is corrupt

  351. through deceitful desires

  352. and to be renewed

  353. in the spirit

  354. of your minds

  355. and to put on

  356. the new self

  357. created after

  358. the likeness of God

  359. in true righteousness

  360. and holiness.

  361. You see,

  362. that's what the spirit does.

  363. Jesus,

  364. in speaking to Nicodemus,

  365. wanted to help him

  366. understand the significance

  367. of the new birth

  368. and he says,

  369. that which was of the,

  370. of the,

  371. that which is born

  372. of the flesh

  373. is flesh

  374. but that which is born

  375. of the spirit

  376. is spirit.

  377. Nicodemus,

  378. I tell you,

  379. you must be born again

  380. and Nicodemus

  381. didn't understand

  382. but what Jesus

  383. was pointing to

  384. was the work

  385. of the spirit

  386. in life

  387. to help regenerate them

  388. and to make them

  389. a new individual

  390. completely,

  391. this complete

  392. transformation

  393. and as the Holy Spirit

  394. who is God

  395. and dwells a life,

  396. he will help

  397. the mind

  398. overcome

  399. the sinful

  400. tendencies,

  401. the sinful

  402. desires

  403. and lead us

  404. to new joys,

  405. to new satisfactions,

  406. to lead us

  407. to true

  408. righteousness

  409. and holiness.

  410. There is a mandate

  411. that God

  412. has given to us,

  413. a mandate

  414. to align

  415. our hearts

  416. and our lives

  417. to his,

  418. the spirit's work.

  419. There is a mandate

  420. to alienate

  421. our thoughts

  422. and convictions,

  423. convictions,

  424. to align

  425. our thoughts

  426. and convictions

  427. to God's thoughts.

  428. His standard

  429. then becomes

  430. our path.

  431. We look for direction

  432. from his word

  433. rather than the philosophies

  434. of the world.

  435. We saturate

  436. our minds

  437. in the things

  438. of the scripture,

  439. those things

  440. that are pure

  441. rather than those things

  442. that are unwholesome

  443. and unholy.

  444. Philippians 4.8

  445. says this.

  446. It says,

  447. Finally, brothers,

  448. whatever is true,

  449. whatever is honorable,

  450. whatever is just,

  451. whatever is commendable

  452. and pure

  453. and lovely,

  454. if there's anything

  455. excellent,

  456. if there's anything

  457. worthy of praise,

  458. think about

  459. these things.

  460. Now, there was a time

  461. where I did

  462. some youth ministry

  463. and the constant

  464. complaint

  465. or criticism

  466. that I would get

  467. was,

  468. hey, I can listen

  469. to that music,

  470. I can watch

  471. that movie,

  472. I can play

  473. that game

  474. because God

  475. doesn't forbid

  476. that.

  477. But the call

  478. for us

  479. as spiritual people,

  480. those who are called

  481. to a spiritual life

  482. is not just

  483. to avoid

  484. the clear

  485. ungodly things,

  486. but it is

  487. to pursue

  488. the things

  489. that are righteous.

  490. It is to have

  491. as a perspective

  492. what is true

  493. and honorable

  494. and just

  495. and pure,

  496. that those things

  497. will dictate

  498. to us

  499. the activities

  500. and the thoughts

  501. that we are to have.

  502. What are we

  503. filling

  504. our minds with?

  505. When we come

  506. to really appreciate

  507. the truth,

  508. we come to understand

  509. how vital it is

  510. to condition

  511. our minds

  512. to think

  513. God's way.

  514. Just the other day,

  515. I was driving home

  516. with the windows open

  517. and there was a guy

  518. who pulled up

  519. beside me,

  520. beside me,

  521. his windows were down,

  522. his music was blaring

  523. and I could feel it.

  524. You know,

  525. you ever been

  526. next to those?

  527. You're like,

  528. wow,

  529. I like feeling your music

  530. and hearing your music.

  531. Well,

  532. I have never listened

  533. to violent rap music

  534. before,

  535. it's just not

  536. something I do.

  537. but I was absolutely

  538. horrified

  539. with the

  540. violence

  541. of the music

  542. that he was playing

  543. and I looked over

  544. to see,

  545. who is this guy?

  546. and he was a normal guy.

  547. But let me tell you,

  548. if he actually carried out

  549. the things

  550. that were in his music,

  551. he would be in prison

  552. for life

  553. because they were

  554. murderous

  555. and heinous

  556. to the core.

  557. I did a

  558. quick search,

  559. I probably shouldn't have,

  560. the top 25 rap songs

  561. that are the most violent

  562. and it is

  563. repulsive

  564. to see

  565. what our

  566. kids

  567. and what our

  568. teens

  569. and what the

  570. younger generation

  571. is filling their minds

  572. with on a consistent

  573. basis.

  574. There is no wonder

  575. why

  576. we're a generation

  577. of individuals

  578. who is given

  579. to violence

  580. because of what

  581. we fill our minds

  582. with.

  583. It's not spiritual

  584. things,

  585. not godly things,

  586. not pure things,

  587. not lovely things,

  588. but vile

  589. and wicked

  590. and repulsive,

  591. reprehensible

  592. in every way.

  593. The question

  594. about our mind

  595. is a question

  596. about ownership.

  597. Who

  598. do you belong to?

  599. Who is your

  600. master?

  601. Are you a

  602. master to your

  603. flesh

  604. or are you a

  605. master

  606. to the spirit?

  607. And here's why

  608. it is so important

  609. is because

  610. in the next verse,

  611. verse 7,

  612. we finally see

  613. the implications.

  614. Here are the

  615. implications

  616. of a life

  617. given to the

  618. flesh versus

  619. a life

  620. given to the

  621. spirit.

  622. For to set

  623. your mind

  624. on the flesh

  625. is what,

  626. church?

  627. Death.

  628. But

  629. to set

  630. your mind

  631. on the

  632. spirit

  633. is life

  634. and peace.

  635. It is a

  636. battle

  637. of life

  638. or

  639. death.

  640. life.

  641. That's

  642. point number

  643. two.

  644. There is no

  645. middle road.

  646. There is no

  647. both and

  648. in this

  649. scenario.

  650. It is either

  651. life

  652. or

  653. death.

  654. Life

  655. that begins

  656. with God

  657. and continues

  658. for eternity

  659. or death

  660. that is

  661. perpetual

  662. and leads

  663. to eternal

  664. separation

  665. and damnation

  666. forever

  667. separated

  668. from God

  669. and hell.

  670. It is

  671. a significant

  672. and urgent

  673. crisis that we

  674. face.

  675. A question

  676. that we must

  677. answer.

  678. Because to set

  679. the mind

  680. on the flesh

  681. is death.

  682. James

    James 1 chapter mention

  683. chapter 1

  684. talks about

  685. this a little

  686. bit because

  687. we tend

  688. to

  689. push away

  690. and point

  691. fingers

  692. and find

  693. somebody to

  694. blame for

  695. our sin.

  696. God wants

  697. us to

  698. understand

  699. that sin

  700. not only

  701. leads to

  702. death but

  703. sin is

  704. your problem

  705. and it

  706. begins in

  707. the mind.

  708. Here's what

  709. he says.

  710. Let no one

  711. say when

  712. he's tempted

  713. I'm being

  714. tempted by

  715. God for

  716. God cannot

  717. be tempted

  718. with evil

  719. and he

  720. himself

  721. tempts

  722. no one.

  723. But each

  724. person is

  725. tempted when

  726. he is

  727. alert and

  728. enticed by

  729. his own

  730. desires.

  731. Then

  732. desire when

  733. it is

  734. conceived

  735. gives birth

  736. to sin

  737. and sin

  738. when it

  739. is full

  740. grown

  741. brings

  742. forth

  743. death.

  744. Sin

  745. begins in

  746. your mind.

  747. It begins

  748. with how

  749. you think.

  750. It leads

  751. to action

  752. and then

  753. leads to

  754. death.

  755. Not only

  756. eternal death

  757. and separation

  758. from God

  759. forever but

  760. even death

  761. today.

  762. Barrenness

  763. in your

  764. relationships.

  765. Fruitlessness

  766. in your

  767. personal life.

  768. life.

  769. No

  770. fellowship

  771. with God.

  772. No

  773. light

  774. in his

  775. presence.

  776. No

  777. insight

  778. in

  779. decision

  780. making.

  781. You have

  782. nothing but

  783. relational

  784. conflict,

  785. emptiness,

  786. fear,

  787. destructive

  788. behavior,

  789. deception,

  790. ruin of

  791. others for

  792. personal gain.

  793. Those are

  794. all coming

  795. from Romans

    Romans 3:10

  796. chapter 3

  797. verses 10

  798. and following

  799. to describe

  800. the consequences

  801. of those

  802. who carry

  803. out the

  804. sinful

  805. fleshly

  806. tendencies

  807. that are

  808. within them.

  809. There is

  810. nothing but

  811. barrenness

  812. and death

  813. in their

  814. life.

  815. But don't

  816. misunderstand

  817. as the

  818. psalmist is

  819. looking at

  820. those who

  821. prosper around

  822. him.

  823. He asks

  824. the question

  825. why do

  826. they seem

  827. to prosper?

  828. Why is

  829. justice not

  830. occurring?

  831. his takeaway

  832. after his

  833. spending time

  834. in prayer

  835. with the

  836. Lord?

  837. He says

  838. then he

  839. considered

  840. their end

  841. and when

  842. he considered

  843. their end

  844. he realized

  845. it was an

  846. entirely

  847. different

  848. scenario

  849. because God

  850. sets them

  851. in slippery

  852. places.

  853. God will

  854. enact

  855. vengeance

  856. on them.

  857. Justice

  858. will prevail.

  859. None

  860. will escape.

  861. But

  862. to set

  863. the mind

  864. on the

  865. spirit

  866. is life

  867. and peace.

  868. First

  869. and foremost

  870. it means

  871. that we

  872. have life

  873. and peace

  874. with God.

  875. Romans

  876. 5.1

  877. says

  878. therefore

  879. since we

  880. have been

  881. justified

  882. by faith

  883. we have

  884. peace

  885. with God

  886. through our

  887. Lord

  888. Jesus

  889. Christ.

  890. Because

  891. of the

  892. work of

  893. God

  894. in our

  895. lives

  896. we can

  897. enjoy

  898. peace

  899. with the

  900. only one

  901. that really

  902. matters

  903. and that

  904. is God

  905. himself.

  906. We

  907. can have

  908. fellowship

  909. with him

  910. communion

  911. with him

  912. forgiveness

  913. and cleansing

  914. that comes

  915. from him

  916. intimacy

  917. with the

  918. God of

  919. the universe

  920. peace

  921. and life

  922. to look

  923. forward to

  924. because of

  925. the work

  926. of justification

  927. that God

  928. has worked

  929. in our

  930. life.

  931. Eternal

  932. peace

  933. because

  934. he is

  935. our

  936. peace

  937. who has

  938. broken down

  939. the wall

  940. of division

  941. as we

  942. find in

  943. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  944. chapter 2

  945. Jesus

  946. absorbed

  947. the wrath

  948. of God

  949. on our

  950. behalf

  951. so that

  952. we don't

  953. have to

  954. experience

  955. the wrath

  956. that we

  957. deserve

  958. because

  959. of our

  960. sin

  961. and now

  962. as one

  963. who has

  964. the spirit

  965. of life

  966. within

  967. we have

  968. been tasked

  969. to be

  970. those

  971. who are

  972. life giving

  973. to others

  974. think about

  975. the mandate

  976. that God

  977. has given

  978. to us

  979. as ambassadors

  980. of Christ

  981. to go

  982. and to

  983. make

  984. disciples

  985. of all

  986. nations

  987. to carry

  988. the life

  989. giving

  990. message

  991. of the

  992. gospel

  993. to those

  994. who need

  995. it

  996. so desperately

  997. to be

  998. those who

  999. are about

  1000. the ministry

  1001. of reconciliation

  1002. drawing others

  1003. back to

  1004. God

  1005. helping

  1006. to bridge

  1007. the gap

  1008. for them

  1009. and as

  1010. those who

  1011. have the

  1012. spirit of

  1013. peace

  1014. we are

  1015. called

  1016. to

  1017. the

  1018. peace

  1019. pursuing

  1020. ministry

  1021. Galatians

  1022. 5 22

  1023. says

  1024. the fruit

  1025. of the

  1026. spirit

  1027. is love

  1028. joy

  1029. peace

  1030. it will

  1031. work its

  1032. way out

  1033. in the

  1034. lives

  1035. of those

  1036. who are

  1037. indwelt

  1038. by the

  1039. spirit

  1040. of peace

  1041. peace

  1042. making

  1043. will be

  1044. your

  1045. prerogative

  1046. Romans

  1047. 12 18

  1048. says it

  1049. this way

  1050. if it

  1051. is possible

  1052. as much

  1053. as depends

  1054. on you

  1055. live

  1056. peaceably

  1057. with all

  1058. men

  1059. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:1

  1060. chapter 4

  1061. verses 1

  1062. and 3

  1063. says

  1064. I therefore

  1065. the prisoner

  1066. of the

  1067. Lord

  1068. beseech you

  1069. to walk

  1070. worthy

  1071. of the

  1072. calling

  1073. with which

  1074. you

  1075. were

  1076. called

  1077. with all

  1078. lowliness

  1079. and gentleness

  1080. with long

  1081. suffering

  1082. bearing

  1083. with one

  1084. another

  1085. in love

  1086. endeavoring

  1087. to keep

  1088. the unity

  1089. of the

  1090. spirit

  1091. in the

  1092. bond

  1093. of peace

  1094. those

  1095. who are

  1096. indwelt

  1097. by the

  1098. spirit

  1099. of peace

  1100. will show

  1101. the work

  1102. of the

  1103. powerful

  1104. spirit

  1105. in their

  1106. life

  1107. by pursuing

  1108. peace

  1109. with those

  1110. around them

  1111. if you

  1112. listen

  1113. to the

  1114. spirit

  1115. if you

  1116. are obedient

  1117. to what

  1118. he is

  1119. commanding

  1120. you to

  1121. do

  1122. you will

  1123. be one

  1124. who is

  1125. pursuing

  1126. peace

  1127. if

  1128. instead

  1129. you

  1130. pursue

  1131. the

  1132. flesh

  1133. and allow

  1134. division

  1135. to continue

  1136. then you

  1137. are

  1138. demonstrating

  1139. a

  1140. tendency

  1141. to the

  1142. flesh

  1143. rather

  1144. than

  1145. allowing

  1146. the

  1147. spirit

  1148. to have

  1149. his

  1150. way

  1151. in your

  1152. life

  1153. the next

  1154. point is

  1155. found

  1156. in verse

  1157. 7

  1158. verse 7

  1159. says this

  1160. for the

  1161. mind

  1162. that is

  1163. set on

  1164. the

  1165. flesh

  1166. is

  1167. hostile

  1168. towards

  1169. God

  1170. it does

  1171. not

  1172. submit

  1173. to

  1174. God's

  1175. law

  1176. indeed

  1177. it

  1178. cannot

  1179. we

  1180. find

  1181. from

  1182. this

  1183. that

  1184. it

  1185. is

  1186. a

  1187. battle

  1188. you

  1189. cannot

  1190. win

  1191. in

  1192. your

  1193. flesh

  1194. it

  1195. is

  1196. a

  1197. battle

  1198. you

  1199. cannot

  1200. win

  1201. in

  1202. your

  1203. flesh

  1204. godly

  1205. righteousness

  1206. cannot

  1207. be

  1208. obtained

  1209. by

  1210. rule

  1211. keeping

  1212. godly

  1213. righteousness

  1214. cannot

  1215. be

  1216. obtained

  1217. by

  1218. better

  1219. discipline

  1220. by

  1221. being

  1222. a

  1223. harder

  1224. worker

  1225. by

  1226. having

  1227. more

  1228. rules

  1229. by

  1230. setting

  1231. more

  1232. boundaries

  1233. by

  1234. having

  1235. more

  1236. accountability

  1237. partners

  1238. being a

  1239. spirit led

  1240. person

  1241. is not

  1242. about

  1243. mastering

  1244. your

  1245. flesh

  1246. but

  1247. submitting

  1248. yourself

  1249. to the

  1250. power

  1251. and the

  1252. work

  1253. of the

  1254. spirit

  1255. Paul

  1256. makes

  1257. this

  1258. absolutely

  1259. and abundantly

  1260. clear

  1261. in

  1262. Galatians

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  1263. chapter

  1264. 3

  1265. he says

  1266. this

  1267. this

  1268. only

  1269. I

  1270. want

  1271. to

  1272. learn

  1273. from

  1274. you

  1275. did

  1276. you

  1277. receive

  1278. the

  1279. spirit

  1280. by

  1281. the

  1282. work

  1283. of

  1284. the

  1285. law

  1286. or

  1287. by

  1288. the

  1289. hearing

  1290. of

  1291. faith

  1292. are

  1293. you

  1294. so

  1295. foolish

  1296. having

  1297. begun

  1298. in

  1299. the

  1300. spirit

  1301. are

  1302. you

  1303. now

  1304. being

  1305. made

  1306. perfect

  1307. by

  1308. the

  1309. flesh

  1310. Paul

  1311. wants

  1312. them

  1328. of

  1329. Christ's

  1331. is

  1332. all

  1333. futility

  1334. it

  1335. is

  1336. not

  1337. something

  1338. you

  1339. can

  1340. accomplish

  1341. on

  1342. your

  1347. that

  1348. only

  1349. can

  1350. be

  1351. done

  1352. as

  1353. you

  1355. your

  1358. the

  1367. unimportant

  1368. it's

  1369. not

  1373. are

  1374. to

  1375. be

  1376. excluded

  1377. certainly

  1378. we're

  1379. called

  1380. to

  1381. obedience

  1382. but

  1383. how

  1384. is

  1385. obedience

  1386. carried

  1387. !

  1388. out

  1389. in

  1390. your

  1391. life

  1392. it's

  1393. carried

  1394. !

  1395. as

  1396. the

  1397. Holy

  1398. Spirit

  1399. is

  1400. working

  1401. to

  1407. you

  1432. it's

  1433. the

  1436. who

  1437. does

  1438. that

  1439. work

  1545. is

  1546. calling

  1547. them

  1548. to

  1555. spirit

  1556. in

  1557. their

  1573. God

  1574. well

  1575. how

  1576. does

  1577. the

  1579. speak

  1580. well

  1581. the

  1629. I

  1637. the

  1669. his

  1671. his

  1673. and

  1674. to

  1675. see

  1676. and

  1677. to

  1678. show

  1679. his

  1680. glory

  1681. those

  1682. who

  1683. pursue

  1684. the

  1685. things

  1686. of

  1687. God

  1688. can

  1689. begin

  1690. to

  1691. think

  1692. God's

  1693. thoughts

  1694. it's

  1695. almost

  1696. incomprehensible

  1697. !

  1698. to

  1699. imagine

  1700. what

  1701. Paul

  1702. says

  1703. to

  1704. the

  1705. church

  1706. of

  1707. Corinth

  1708. in

  1709. 1

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  1710. Corinthians

  1711. chapter

  1712. 2

  1713. he

  1714. says

  1715. you

  1716. as

  1717. regenerated

  1718. and new

  1719. individuals

  1720. indwelt

  1721. by the

  1722. Holy

  1723. Spirit

  1724. can

  1725. begin

  1726. to

  1727. have

  1728. the

  1729. mind

  1730. of

  1731. Christ

  1732. you

  1733. can

  1734. think

  1735. God's

  1736. thoughts

  1737. you

  1738. can

  1739. know

  1740. God's

  1741. heart

  1742. but

  1743. ultimately

  1744. in our

  1745. last

  1746. point

  1747. we

  1748. find

  1749. in

  1750. verse

  1751. 8

  1752. it

  1753. is

  1754. a

  1755. battle

  1756. of

  1757. faith

  1758. it

  1759. really

  1760. boils

  1761. down

  1762. to

  1763. this

  1764. it

  1765. is

  1766. a

  1767. battle

  1768. of

  1769. faith

  1770. what

  1771. do

  1772. you

  1773. believe

  1774. those

  1775. who

  1776. are

  1777. in

  1778. the

  1779. flesh

  1780. cannot

  1781. please

  1782. God

  1783. well

  1784. the

  1785. corollary

  1786. is

  1787. found

  1788. in

  1789. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11:6

  1790. chapter

  1791. 11

  1792. verse

  1793. 6

  1794. without

  1795. faith

  1796. it is

  1797. impossible

  1798. to

  1799. please

  1800. him

  1801. for

  1802. he

  1803. who

  1804. comes

  1805. to

  1806. God

  1807. must

  1808. believe

  1809. that

  1810. he

  1811. is

  1812. and

  1813. that

  1814. he

  1815. is

  1816. a

  1817. rewarder

  1818. of

  1819. those

  1820. who

  1821. diligently

  1822. seek

  1823. him

  1824. so I

  1825. want to

  1826. approach

  1827. this

  1828. from a

  1829. positive

  1830. standpoint

  1831. rather than

  1832. continuing

  1833. down the

  1834. negative

  1835. track

  1836. if you

  1837. want to

  1838. be one

  1839. who is

  1840. pleasing

  1841. to

  1842. God

  1843. you

  1844. must

  1845. recognize

  1846. that

  1847. fundamentally

  1848. this

  1849. is

  1850. not

  1851. only

  1852. a

  1853. matter

  1854. of

  1855. thinking

  1856. but

  1857. a

  1858. matter

  1859. of

  1860. faith

  1861. what

  1862. do

  1863. you

  1864. believe

  1865. about

  1866. God

  1867. without

  1868. faith

  1869. it is

  1870. impossible

  1871. to

  1872. please

  1873. him

  1874. God

  1875. I

  1876. want to

  1877. close

  1878. with another

  1879. illustration

  1880. a guy

  1881. by the

  1882. name of

  1883. David

  1884. Brainerd

  1885. who lived

  1886. in the

  1887. 1700s

  1888. another

  1889. one of

  1890. my

  1891. favorite

  1892. guys

  1893. David

  1894. Brainerd

  1895. when he

  1896. was in

  1897. his early

  1898. 20s

  1899. was still

  1900. unsaved

  1901. he was

  1902. still not

  1903. following

  1904. after Christ

  1905. and he

  1906. was going

  1907. to Yale

  1908. he was

  1909. at the

  1910. top

  1911. of his

  1912. class

  1913. but God

  1914. got a

  1915. hold of

  1916. his heart

  1917. one day

  1918. as he

  1919. was out

  1920. walking

  1921. and praying

  1922. alone

  1923. just

  1924. reflecting

  1925. on the

  1926. glories

  1927. of God

  1928. and

  1929. trying to

  1930. commune

  1931. with him

  1932. through prayer

  1933. and God

  1934. intervened

  1935. in that

  1936. moment

  1937. and

  1938. rescued

  1939. him

  1940. and

  1941. caught

  1942. him

  1943. up

  1944. essentially

  1945. to glory

  1946. and captured

  1947. his attention

  1948. and his

  1949. affections

  1950. well at

  1951. age 21

  1952. he

  1953. then

  1954. shifted

  1955. course

  1956. and said

  1957. I want

  1958. to be

  1959. a minister

  1960. in his

  1961. home state

  1962. without being

  1963. licensed

  1964. by

  1965. the

  1966. institution

  1967. so he

  1968. went to

  1969. Yale

  1970. and changed

  1971. his

  1972. major

  1973. but the

  1974. problem

  1975. was he

  1976. got expelled

  1977. one day

  1978. because he

  1979. said something

  1980. negative about

  1981. his teacher

  1982. he said

  1983. this teacher

  1984. has no more

  1985. grace

  1986. than a chair

  1987. and he

  1988. wondered why

  1989. the pastor

  1990. over the

  1991. institution

  1992. did not

  1993. drop down

  1994. dead

  1995. for

  1996. finding

  1997. students

  1998. for

  1999. their

  2000. evangelical

  2001. zeal

  2002. he

  2003. couldn't

  2004. get it

  2005. George

  2006. Whitefield

  2007. had just

  2008. been on

  2009. campus

  2010. had ignited

  2011. a flame

  2012. in the

  2013. hearts

  2014. of many

  2015. of the

  2016. students

  2017. they were

  2018. zealous

  2019. about the

  2020. things

  2021. of the

  2022. Lord

  2023. but the

  2024. pastor

  2025. over

  2026. this

  2027. institution

  2028. was trying

  2029. to

  2030. quench

  2031. the flames

  2032. and

  2033. David

  2034. Brenner

  2035. couldn't

  2036. understand

  2037. it

  2038. and for

  2039. that

  2040. slip of

  2041. the tongue

  2042. he was

  2043. expelled

  2044. and what

  2045. would seem

  2046. to be

  2047. a bummer

  2048. in terms

  2049. of circumstances

  2050. God used

  2051. then in

  2052. his life

  2053. to totally

  2054. make him

  2055. a person

  2056. who not only

  2057. loved God

  2058. but demonstrated

  2059. a commitment

  2060. to Christ

  2061. in the middle

  2062. of great

  2063. suffering

  2064. he suffered

  2065. with tuberculosis

  2066. which

  2067. in that day

  2068. is

  2069. in this day

  2070. too

  2071. is a

  2072. disease

  2073. of the lungs

  2074. he had it

  2075. from the time

  2076. he was

  2077. 21

  2078. to the time

  2079. he died

  2080. at age

  2081. 29

  2082. with increasing

  2083. intensity

  2084. so that he

  2085. could not

  2086. even hardly

  2087. breathe

  2088. and constantly

  2089. coughed up

  2090. blood

  2091. it was a

  2092. it was a

  2093. an existence

  2094. of constant

  2095. turmoil

  2096. distress

  2097. and pain

  2098. he describes

  2099. his experiences

  2100. in a journal

  2101. but what

  2102. comes

  2103. to light

  2104. is his

  2105. absolute

  2106. commitment

  2107. to God

  2108. in the midst

  2109. of intense

  2110. suffering

  2111. he says

  2112. when I really

  2113. enjoy God

  2114. I feel my

  2115. desires of him

  2116. the more

  2117. insatiable

  2118. oh for holiness

  2119. oh for more

  2120. of God

  2121. in my soul

  2122. oh this

  2123. pleasing

  2124. pain

  2125. it makes

  2126. my soul

  2127. press

  2128. after God

  2129. oh that I

  2130. might never

  2131. loiter

  2132. on my heavenly

  2133. journey

  2134. if I had a

  2135. thousand lives

  2136. my soul

  2137. would gladly

  2138. have laid

  2139. them all

  2140. down

  2141. at once

  2142. to have

  2143. been

  2144. with Christ

  2145. and this

  2146. deep

  2147. commitment

  2148. to faith

  2149. in God

  2150. in the midst

  2151. of incredible

  2152. adversity

  2153. and suffering

  2154. led him

  2155. to not

  2156. only

  2157. minister

  2158. to the

  2159. native

  2160. Indians

  2161. but to be

  2162. a catalyst

  2163. for the

  2164. worldwide

  2165. mission

  2166. across

  2167. entire

  2168. Europe

  2169. and Asia

  2170. if we

  2171. want to

  2172. be people

  2173. who are

  2174. spirit

  2175. filled

  2176. and spirit

  2177. led

  2178. we must

  2179. be people

  2180. of faith

  2181. how do we

  2182. go about

  2183. this

  2184. how do you

  2185. nurture

  2186. a renewed

  2187. mind

  2188. how do you

  2189. cultivate

  2190. a spirit

  2191. filled

  2192. mind

  2193. well there

  2194. are many

  2195. ways we

  2196. can do

  2197. this

  2198. but it

  2199. must begin

  2200. with the

  2201. word of

  2202. God

  2203. memorization

  2204. meditation

  2205. meditation

  2206. on the

  2207. scriptures

  2208. blessed

  2209. is the

  2210. man

  2211. Psalm

  2212. one

  2213. says

  2214. who

  2215. delight

  2216. in the

  2217. law

  2218. of the

  2219. Lord

  2220. and on

  2221. his

  2222. law

  2223. he

  2224. meditates

  2225. day

  2226. and night

  2227. he will

  2228. be like

  2229. a tree

  2230. planted

  2231. by rivers

  2232. of water

  2233. that brings

  2234. forth

  2235. fruit

  2236. in its

  2237. season

  2238. its

  2239. leaf

  2240. will not

  2241. wither

  2242. and whatever

  2243. he does

  2244. will

  2245. prosper

  2246. that kind

  2247. of life

  2248. that kind

  2249. of person

  2250. communion

  2251. and prayer

  2252. with God

  2253. but perhaps

  2254. the greatest

  2255. way that

  2256. those of us

  2257. in this room

  2258. need to begin

  2259. to cultivate

  2260. a spirit

  2261. filled life

  2262. is putting

  2263. aside

  2264. worldly

  2265. fleshly

  2266. thinking

  2267. that may

  2268. not be

  2269. bad

  2270. in and of

  2271. itself

  2272. but the

  2273. leisure

  2274. and the

  2275. media

  2276. that we

  2277. bombard

  2278. ourselves

  2279. with

  2280. day

  2281. after day

  2282. after day

  2283. keeps us

  2284. from being

  2285. able to

  2286. listen

  2287. to the

  2288. spirit's

  2289. voice

  2290. whether

  2291. it's

  2292. sports

  2293. or news

  2294. or music

  2295. or movies

  2296. or tv

  2297. shows

  2298. or netflix

  2299. or whatever

  2300. you might

  2301. fill in

  2302. the blank

  2303. with

  2304. we are

  2305. becoming

  2306. numb

  2307. to the

  2308. things

  2309. of the

  2310. spirit

  2311. and not

  2312. listening

  2313. to his

  2314. voice

  2315. in our

  2316. lives

  2317. we must

  2318. listen

  2319. to the

  2320. spirit

  2321. and find

  2322. ways to

  2323. allow the

  2324. spirit to

  2325. transform

  2326. the way

  2327. we think

  2328. let's

  2329. pray

  2330. miracle

  2331. miracle

  2332. Thank you.
