  1. I want to encourage you again to pick up one of these study guides on the way out.

  2. We're going to be working through a 12-week series on the life of Daniel.

  3. And I say the life of Daniel instead of the book of Daniel,

  4. because we're going to go through the first six chapters or so

  5. and kind of evaluate kind of the narrative of Daniel

  6. and especially how Daniel's life and the life of his friends,

  7. as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego point to God.

  8. So pick that up.

  9. It should be a great time together.

  10. It certainly has been encouraging to myself as I have been thinking ahead

  11. and looking at the text, encouraging my own heart,

  12. reminding myself of the things that are there for us to learn.

  13. Turn with me, if you would, to Luke 18.

  14. Luke 18.

  15. If you're using the Pew Bible, it's on page 877.

  16. Page 877.

  17. I want to begin with this question.

  18. It's really been the governing question for us

  19. ever since we've been in this chapter, Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  20. And the overarching question of this chapter is,

  21. do you or will you depend on God?

  22. Now, I guess if I were to phrase that more personally,

  23. do you like to be dependent?

  24. Do you wake up in the morning and say,

  25. oh good, another day I can be dependent.

  26. Another day I can ask for help.

  27. Now my guess is that like me,

  28. we don't want to ask for help.

  29. We don't want to feel like our life is dependent on others

  30. or dependent on God.

  31. We want to feel like we have things pretty well together.

  32. But when we ask God to make us dependent,

  33. isn't it interesting how God delights

  34. in answering that prayer?

  35. So that we wake up in the morning,

  36. and this has been one of those weeks,

  37. just feeling really overwhelmed with lots of things,

  38. and being reminded day by day how desperate I am for God's strength.

  39. And by the way, there's no better place to be.

  40. And that's what God has called us to.

  41. God has called us to a life of faith.

  42. The just shall live by faith.

  43. That's what God has called us into.

  44. And by the way, that is not just a faith for a moment.

  45. That is not just believing in God to save me for some future day in salvation

  46. when he's going to take me to be with himself.

  47. But it's entering in to this life of dependence

  48. in trusting in Jesus day by day.

  49. It's reflected in the Lord's Prayer.

  50. Give us this day our what?

  51. Daily bread.

  52. Do you realize what a grace that is?

  53. Of God.

  54. To make us dependent on him every day.

  55. To welcome us in to fresh experiences of trusting him.

  56. Needing him.

  57. Asking him for help.

  58. And so, I feel in my own heart

  59. that we trust God to do the biggest thing

  60. in saving us from our deepest need, from sin,

  61. but why does my heart struggle so much depending on God day by day

  62. for the lesser things?

  63. So, Romans chapter 8, where Paul says this, he says,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  64. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  65. He who did not spare his own son, but delivered him up for us all,

  66. how shall he not with him freely give us all things?

  67. And so, if God has given us forgiveness from sin,

  68. the greatest human need,

  69. and he's called us into relationship with him,

  70. and he's bridged the gap, as it were,

  71. the separation that existed because of my deficiency,

  72. my rebellion,

  73. and God in demonstrating his own love for us,

  74. in that while I was a sinner, Christ died for me.

  75. He overcame the gap.

  76. He covered the greatest need of my life.

  77. So, why is it that I can trust God for that,

  78. but I can't trust God for the little stuff?

  79. So, here Jesus is.

  80. He's encouraging his disciples.

  81. We've called this road trip reflections

  82. because these are the final parting words, really, of Jesus

  83. to his disciples and to those who are listening to him

  84. along the way of calling them to the greatest things,

  85. dependence on him.

  86. And one of the things that causes us to stand out from the world,

  87. Paul will say,

  88. and now abides faith, hope, love, these three.

  89. The greatest of these is love.

  90. Those are really the three things that set us apart from the world.

  91. Our love for others and our love for God.

  92. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  93. Love your neighbors yourself.

  94. Our faith in God, which is dependence on him day by day.

  95. That's what we're going to talk about today.

  96. And hope.

  97. Trusting God for what he's going to accomplish in eternity for us.

  98. So, we don't like to be dependent.

  99. The truth is, none of us like to acknowledge that we have deep need.

  100. But if we're going to grow in the Christian life,

  101. and if we're going to be those who are growing in faith in Christ,

  102. and growing in the way that we shine the gospel in the world,

  103. it's going to happen as he's producing, nurturing, cultivating in our life

  104. dependence on God day by day.

  105. And so, Jeremiah will say in Lamentations 3,

  106. he says,

  107. Through the Lord's mercies, we are not consumed because his compassions fail not.

  108. They are new every morning.

  109. Great is his faithfulness.

  110. God delights in pouring out his mercy on us day by day.

  111. Are we coming to the well and drawing it up for ourselves?

  112. Enjoying those mercies day by day.

  113. Depending on him, moment by moment.

  114. That's what God is calling us to.

  115. And that's what will shine the gospel.

  116. That's what this passage is about today.

  117. That's the sermon in a nutshell right there.

  118. And so, the way for us, I think, at times,

  119. to enjoy and benefit from learning how to grow in dependence

  120. is by having good examples.

  121. And one of my favorite examples is George Mueller.

  122. Some of you may understand or know who George Mueller is.

  123. He lived in the 1800s.

  124. He had this life of deep dependence on God.

  125. So that the objective or the goal of his life was stated this way.

  126. I have joyfully dedicated my whole life to show how much may be accomplished by prayer and faith.

  127. And if you were to write a summary over his entire life,

  128. that no better summary would exist.

  129. He was a pastor.

  130. He was one who founded a Bible college.

  131. He started an orphanage that over the course of the ministry,

  132. over 10,000 children were a part of his orphanage.

  133. And he trusted God to provide the means to provide for all of those children.

  134. Throughout the duration of his life, he learned, of course,

  135. lessons on dependence and faith.

  136. Let me just share briefly some of the things that he said.

  137. He says,

  138. We should not shrink from opportunities where our faith may be tried.

  139. The more I'm in a position to be tried in faith,

  140. the more I will have the opportunity of seeing God's help and deliverance.

  141. Every fresh instance in which he helps and delivers me will increase my faith.

  142. The believer should not shrink from situations, positions, or circumstances in which his faith may be tried.

  143. But he should cheerfully embrace them as opportunities to see the hand of God stretched out in help and deliverance.

  144. Thus, his faith will be strengthened.

  145. The only way to learn strong faith is to endure great trials.

  146. The only way to learn strong faith is to endure great trials.

  147. It is through our daily dependence on God that we make much of him and we show that he is worthy of trusting.

  148. He is worthy of our faith.

  149. So that's what this whole passage has been about.

  150. As Jesus is making his way to Jerusalem, he started in the region between Samaria and Galilee,

  151. and he's made his way over to the eastern side of the Jordan.

  152. He's coming down that side of the Jordan.

  153. He's going to make his way into Jericho and ultimately up to Jerusalem.

  154. We know what he waits him there.

  155. And here in these final moments and teachings of Jesus, he's interested in helping his disciples and those who listen

  156. understand the significance of faith and dependence.

  157. That's what this chapter has been about.

  158. So that in chapter 18, verse 1, he says,

  159. He told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.

  160. Learn to be dependent and learn that God is trustworthy.

  161. So that in verse 8, I tell you, speaking of God, he will give justice to them speedily.

  162. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?

  163. Do we trust that God is able to answer prayer and to meet us in our place of need?

  164. Then he moves on in verse 9, and we see that now Jesus is now coming against those who are self-reliant.

  165. We find he told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and treated others with contempt.

  166. So he tells this parable about two men.

  167. One who was the epitome of righteousness, a Pharisee in that day.

  168. The other which was supposed to kind of encapsulate all that was wicked and ungodly in that culture, a tax collector.

  169. Both of whom were going up to the temple to pray.

  170. This picture of coming to a place of worship.

  171. A place that represented where the presence of God was.

  172. The Pharisee, when he comes, rather than praying to God, we find that he's praying about himself.

  173. Some translations will say he prayed to himself.

  174. And that may be more accurate.

  175. He's the center of his prayer.

  176. He's really the only person he cares about.

  177. And he wants to promote himself and let everyone else know in the room how great he is.

  178. I don't do this, and I instead do this.

  179. I'm not like that tax collector over there.

  180. But then, in verse 13, this parable turns to the tax collector.

  181. He's the word for mercy.

  182. This deep dependence on God.

  183. He recognizes something is true about God's character, that he is a God of mercy.

  184. And this word for mercy is the word propitiation, which is really the word for atonement or appeasement or forgiveness.

  185. And what's taking place either in the morning or in the evening.

  186. It happened twice a day in the temple.

  187. Atonement was made for the people through sacrifice.

  188. And prayer would happen as a result of the sacrifices that were being made.

  189. And this tax collector, recognizing all that was happening there in the temple at this time,

  190. understands there must be atonement for sin.

  191. That he must receive forgiveness.

  192. And that forgiveness only comes from God.

  193. He also recognizes something about himself.

  194. He calls himself the sinner.

  195. The direct article is used in Jesus' parable to refer to him as the ultimate sinner.

  196. The example of someone who is the chief sinner, as it were.

  197. And in this way, we find the gospel does obliterate self-reliance.

  198. At least it should.

  199. We step into this passage this morning, beginning in verse 18.

  200. And we need to ask ourselves, is God dependable?

  201. Is God reliable?

  202. Is God trustworthy?

  203. And if he is, it will not only show up in prayer, it will show up in my posture,

  204. but it will also show up in the way that I depend on him every single day for the things that I have.

  205. And this is where the rubber meets the road for us in Western culture.

  206. This is where dependence in faith will collide, will be tangible,

  207. so that we can say, along with George Mueller,

  208. I have joyfully dedicated my life to show how much may be accomplished by prayer and faith.

  209. Does faith shine from our life as we're trusting God day by day with the things that we need help for?

  210. So we find in verse 18, we find in this passage this morning,

  211. two reasons why we can depend on God.

  212. First, we can depend on God because God is good.

  213. You can depend on a God who is good.

  214. He's good.

  215. We find that in verses 18 and 19.

  216. Look at this with me for a moment.

  217. And a ruler asked him,

  218. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  219. And Jesus said to him,

  220. Why do you call me good?

  221. No one is good except God alone.

  222. Again, Jesus is on this road with his disciples,

  223. and we find from Matthew's account,

  224. now all of these synoptic gospels are beginning to converge.

  225. And the stories are now kind of picked up from Matthew and Mark,

  226. and now we're going to carry them through together along with Luke to the end of the book.

  227. We find from Matthew's account in chapter 19, verses 1 and 2,

  228. that this wasn't a small gathering.

  229. Jesus had finished these sayings.

  230. He went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan,

  231. and large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.

  232. Of course, he's healing and teaching.

  233. Pilgrims that are coming along with this crowd into Jerusalem,

  234. and certainly Jesus is picking up followers along the way.

  235. We find some things about this ruler from Matthew and Mark.

  236. We find from Matthew that he's young.

  237. It's mentioned twice in the text.

  238. We find from Mark that he's reverent.

  239. He comes, he kneels before Jesus.

  240. There's this measure of humility,

  241. this dependence that's showing up,

  242. even in his posture towards Jesus.

  243. We come to understand that he's knowledgeable.

  244. He knows the law.

  245. He believes himself to be devout.

  246. He's tried to follow the things that the Mosaic law has set forward.

  247. From an outward appearance, he was the ideal Jew.

  248. And the fact that he is wealthy,

  249. which we also see in verse 23 of Luke chapter 18,

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  250. he was extremely wealthy, this would be a marker,

  251. a clue to the people in that day that he was favored by God.

  252. He was blessed by God.

  253. And so from an outward appearance, he had it all together.

  254. Luke is the only one to mention that he's a ruler.

  255. It's possible that he was a ruler in a synagogue.

  256. It's also possible that he was a ruler from the Sanhedrin,

  257. but it's unlikely because of his youth.

  258. It's probably more likely that he was influential and a wealthy man,

  259. a civic leader, as it were,

  260. a leading man of society, a respected layperson,

  261. somebody with repute and distinction in the town or the region.

  262. But in spite of his position,

  263. we find that there is humility in his heart.

  264. What must I do to inherit eternal life?

  265. He's mindful of Christ's position.

  266. He recognizes him as a teacher, as a rabbi.

  267. He's thinking carefully.

  268. As we look through the gospel accounts,

  269. the issue or the subject of eternal life

  270. is really prevalent in the gospel of John.

  271. So he's heard Christ's teaching.

  272. He's aware of eternal life.

  273. He's asking the right question.

  274. Jesus will help to point his attention,

  275. direct his attention on the fact that God is good.

  276. And in speaking of God's goodness,

  277. he begins by helping this man understand

  278. that God's goodness stands apart from us.

  279. His goodness stands apart from us.

  280. Only God is good.

  281. Why do you call me good, he says.

  282. No one is good except God alone.

  283. It may seem like Jesus is avoiding the question.

  284. It may seem like Jesus isn't really answering it directly.

  285. But Jesus wants to underscore the faulty nature of the question altogether.

  286. What is the standard of goodness in your mind?

  287. What do you fit in relation to that standard?

  288. What are you depending on?

  289. Is essentially underneath this statement that Jesus is making.

  290. And of course, this man, aware of the Mosaic law,

  291. would have also been aware of the other passages of Scripture,

  292. the Psalms in particular,

  293. which Paul kind of summarizes and compiles in Romans chapter 3

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  294. to talk about the nature of man

  295. when he says this in Romans 3, 10 to 18.

  296. As it is written, none is righteous.

  297. No, not one.

  298. No one understands.

  299. No one seeks for God.

  300. All have turned aside.

  301. Together they have become worthless.

  302. No one does good, not even one.

  303. Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.

  304. Their feet are swift to shed blood.

  305. In their path are ruin and misery

  306. and the way of peace they have not known.

  307. There is no fear of God before their eyes.

  308. We are not inherently good.

  309. We are corrupt to the core.

  310. And to understand what the Bible says in relationship to our nature

  311. is the beginning of learning that our need and dependence on God in the first place.

  312. Only God is good.

  313. And compared to his perfection,

  314. we are corrupt,

  315. we are worthless,

  316. and we are wicked,

  317. according to this passage.

  318. What are you trusting in?

  319. And essentially,

  320. Jesus is saying,

  321. only God is good.

  322. Of course,

  323. that comes to us from 1 Chronicles 16, 34.

  324. Oh, give thanks to the Lord,

  325. for he is good.

  326. His steadfast love endures forever.

  327. Or Psalm 34, verse 8.

    Psalms 34:8

  328. Oh, taste and see

  329. that the Lord is good.

  330. Blessed is the man

  331. who takes refuge in him.

  332. His goodness

  333. stands apart

  334. from

  335. humanity.

  336. And now,

  337. in verse 20,

  338. we're going to see

  339. that his goodness

  340. is revealed to us

  341. in the law.

  342. Now,

  343. Jesus begins to,

  344. in establishing

  345. that only God is good,

  346. now he lifts up

  347. this standard

  348. that God has set

  349. so that

  350. by his grace,

  351. he can allow

  352. this

  353. young

  354. ruler

  355. who has evaluated

  356. himself

  357. probably against

  358. the backdrop

  359. of everyone else

  360. around him

  361. can now evaluate

  362. his life

  363. against the backdrop

  364. of the perfect standard

  365. that God has set

  366. in his law.

  367. God's goodness

  368. revealed in the law.

  369. Verse 20 says,

  370. you know

  371. the commands,

  372. do not commit adultery,

  373. do not murder,

  374. do not steal,

  375. do not bear false witness,

  376. honor your father

  377. and mother.

  378. Jesus

  379. strengthens

  380. his argument here.

  381. By the way,

  382. the law is not arbitrary.

  383. The law is not

  384. just a set of rules

  385. that God

  386. put together

  387. because he thought

  388. we needed something

  389. to obey.

  390. No,

  391. the law is a reflection

  392. of his very nature,

  393. his very character.

  394. By giving us the law,

  395. we come to know

  396. who God is.

  397. The law shows

  398. his purity,

  399. his perfection.

  400. The law was meant

  401. to expose our sin

  402. and lead us to God.

  403. It was meant

  404. to show us

  405. that we need him,

  406. that we are distant,

  407. that our sin

  408. has separated ourselves

  409. from him

  410. and that only God

  411. is good.

  412. here in our passage,

  413. Jesus,

  414. he doesn't confront

  415. the ruler head on,

  416. but he wants

  417. to expose

  418. his heart,

  419. his deficiency,

  420. his understanding.

  421. What you're

  422. trusting in

  423. is not good.

  424. Only God is good.

  425. He gives this law,

  426. do not commit adultery,

  427. do not murder,

  428. do not steal,

  429. do not bear false witness.

  430. Honor your father

  431. and your mother,

  432. which is the second half

  433. half of the Decalogue,

  434. the second half

  435. of the Ten Commandments.

  436. It focuses on

  437. the part of the commands

  438. that relate to others.

  439. And so in essence,

  440. Jesus is saying,

  441. kind of encapsulating

  442. the commandments,

  443. love the Lord your God

  444. with all your heart,

  445. soul, and mind,

  446. and love your neighbor

  447. as yourself.

  448. This is the section

  449. of the Decalogue

  450. that focuses on

  451. the loving your neighbor

  452. as yourself.

  453. because as it relates

  454. to true love,

  455. love for God,

  456. how do we know

  457. that we love God

  458. the way he expects

  459. us to love God?

  460. Well, it shows up

  461. in the way

  462. that we love the people

  463. that God loves.

  464. In Matthew,

    Matthew 5:27

  465. chapter 5,

  466. verses 27 and 28,

  467. we understand

  468. that the posture

  469. of loving God

  470. and obeying these commands

  471. is deeper than what happens

  472. on the surface.

  473. It's what's really,

  474. truly in the heart.

  475. And Jesus will say

  476. on the Sermon on the Mount,

  477. you have heard

  478. what was said,

  479. you shall not commit adultery.

  480. But I say to you

  481. that everyone who looks

  482. at a woman with lustful intent

  483. has already committed adultery

  484. with her in his heart.

  485. It's not about the externals,

  486. it's about what's inside.

  487. And then in Matthew,

    Matthew 5:21

  488. chapter 5,

  489. verses 21 and 22,

  490. Jesus will expose

  491. what true murder looks like

  492. when he says,

  493. you have heard

  494. that it was said

  495. to those of old,

  496. you shall not murder.

  497. And whoever murders

  498. will be liable of judgment.

  499. But I say to you

  500. that everyone

  501. who is angry

  502. with his brother

  503. will be liable

  504. to judgment.

  505. Whoever insults

  506. his brother

  507. will be liable

  508. to the council.

  509. And whoever says,

  510. you fool,

  511. will be liable

  512. of the hell of fire.

  513. I love how Ray Comfort,

  514. if you're familiar

  515. with his ministry,

  516. how Ray Comfort

  517. will go to college campuses

  518. or go to the beach cities

  519. of California.

  520. and his approach

  521. is to use

  522. these kinds

  523. of questions

  524. to draw out

  525. his listeners.

  526. To help them see

  527. how far away

  528. they are

  529. from God's

  530. perfect standard.

  531. Where in the beginning

  532. of the conversation,

  533. they'll say,

  534. well,

  535. I'm a pretty good person,

  536. of course,

  537. I'm going to heaven.

  538. Well,

  539. then it'll lead them

  540. through this progression

  541. of questions

  542. and one by one

  543. they'll say,

  544. well,

  545. I guess

  546. if I've lusted

  547. after someone

  548. in my heart,

  549. I'm an adulterer.

  550. I guess

  551. if I have hated

  552. someone in my heart,

  553. I'm a murderer.

  554. And of course,

  555. as it relates

  556. to stealing,

  557. as it relates

  558. to bearing false witness,

  559. as it relates

  560. to honoring

  561. our father and mother,

  562. those things

  563. are so apparent

  564. and it should have led

  565. this man

  566. to the right conclusion.

  567. The honest answer

  568. should have been,

  569. no,

  570. I'm far from good.

  571. I've come to a place

  572. of understanding

  573. nothing good

  574. exists within me.

  575. Any of you

  576. who are aware

  577. of Ray Comfort

  578. will appreciate

  579. and understand

  580. that approach

  581. to ministry

  582. and so that

  583. by the time

  584. he's done,

  585. everyone who has

  586. listened to his

  587. gospel presentation

  588. has come to

  589. that conclusion

  590. but somehow

  591. and for some reason

  592. this rich young ruler

  593. was not able

  594. to make that connection.

  595. He was not able

  596. to be honest

  597. with himself.

  598. But the statement

  599. instead would have

  600. a reverse effect.

  601. Instead of this man

  602. being led

  603. to the place

  604. of recognizing

  605. his sin,

  606. he comes to a place

  607. as we see

  608. in the next verse

  609. in verse 21.

  610. He said,

  611. all these things

  612. I've kept

  613. from my youth.

  614. And now Jesus

  615. needs to press in

  616. and help him

  617. understand that

  618. God's goodness

  619. cannot be achieved.

  620. God's goodness

  621. cannot be replicated.

  622. God's goodness

  623. cannot be duplicated

  624. by human effort.

  625. It is God's goodness

  626. and God's goodness

  627. alone.

  628. You can almost see

  629. this man's smile

  630. on his face.

  631. He's ecstatic.

  632. All of his hopes

  633. have been confirmed.

  634. He's relieved.

  635. It's exactly

  636. what he expected

  637. Jesus to say.

  638. If I live

  639. according to the law

  640. then I get heaven.

  641. If I obey

  642. the commands

  643. I'll get rewards

  644. not only on earth

  645. but also in heaven.

  646. What a relief.

  647. He's stoked.

  648. I've kept

  649. all these commands

  650. from my youth.

  651. Of course

  652. none of that was true.

  653. He drew the wrong

  654. conclusions.

  655. He was not being

  656. honest with himself.

  657. It's kind of like

  658. those videos

  659. if you've ever watched

  660. them of the kids

  661. that are in the room

  662. and you see them

  663. they've marked

  664. themselves with lipstick

  665. right?

  666. And mom comes

  667. into the room

  668. and says

  669. what you been doing?

  670. Oh nothing.

  671. Or my favorite

  672. this is two little girls

  673. who thought

  674. they would get

  675. to play

  676. in some desitin

  677. and so they've

  678. coated each other

  679. with desitin

  680. their faces

  681. and their hair.

  682. Mom comes in

  683. and says

  684. hey what you guys

  685. been doing?

  686. Oh nothing.

  687. And it's as

  688. clear as day.

  689. It's as plain

  690. as the desitin

  691. on their face.

  692. But he would not

  693. acknowledge

  694. where he really was

  695. in relationship

  696. to perfection.

  697. He was unwilling

  698. to acknowledge

  699. that he was dependent.

  700. this man is doing

  701. the exact same thing

  702. these two little girls

  703. are doing.

  704. And with this

  705. inflated view

  706. of himself

  707. essentially

  708. what he's doing

  709. is blaspheming God.

  710. He's inflating himself

  711. he's bringing God down

  712. and by doing that

  713. he is cursing God

  714. to his face

  715. because God is standing

  716. right in front of him.

  717. Jesus says

  718. here in verse 22

  719. Jesus heard this

  720. he said to him

  721. one thing you still lack

  722. see all that you have

  723. excuse me

  724. sell all that you have

  725. distribute to the poor

  726. and you will have

  727. treasure in heaven

  728. and come

  729. follow me.

  730. You see

  731. God's goodness

  732. can't

  733. be

  734. achieved

  735. on our own.

  736. Can't be achieved.

  737. I love how Mark

  738. recounts Christ's response

  739. in Mark chapter 10

    Mark 10:20

  740. verse 20 and 21

  741. it says

  742. and he said to him

  743. speaking of the rich ruler

  744. teacher all these things

  745. I've kept for my youth

  746. and Jesus

  747. looking at him

  748. loved him.

  749. Jesus

  750. looking at him

  751. loved him.

  752. What an amazing description.

  753. This man

  754. has ignorantly

  755. blasphemed God.

  756. He's made much

  757. of himself

  758. he's

  759. he's brazenly

  760. declared

  761. himself

  762. to be righteous

  763. and effect

  764. has brought

  765. God down

  766. and what does

  767. God do?

  768. Well

  769. God

  770. in Christ

  771. looks at him

  772. and loves him.

  773. Can you imagine

  774. the scene?

  775. I envision

  776. Jesus

  777. there

  778. with a tender

  779. smile

  780. on his face

  781. maybe

  782. tilting his head

  783. to one side

  784. and in his eyes

  785. and in his face

  786. essentially he's saying

  787. you really don't understand

  788. but I love you anyway.

  789. He gently provides

  790. this next statement

  791. one

  792. thing

  793. you lack

  794. sell all that you have

  795. distribute to the poor

  796. and you will have treasure

  797. in heaven

  798. and come and follow me.

  799. Jesus puts his finger

  800. on the one thing

  801. that this

  802. rich

  803. ruler

  804. cannot escape

  805. his own

  806. covetous heart

  807. his own

  808. self-reliant

  809. heart

  810. his own

  811. desire

  812. for

  813. personal comfort

  814. in

  815. his life.

  816. This statement

  817. is entirely

  818. consistent

  819. of course

  820. with what Jesus

  821. says throughout

  822. his ministry.

  823. In Luke chapter 14

    Luke 14:33

  824. verse 33

  825. he says

  826. therefore

  827. any one of you

  828. who does not

  829. renounce

  830. all that he has

  831. cannot

  832. be

  833. my disciple.

  834. Or what he says

  835. in Luke chapter 12

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  836. when he says

  837. fear not little flock

  838. for it is your

  839. father's good pleasure

  840. to give you the kingdom.

  841. Sell your possessions

  842. and give to the needy.

  843. Provide yourselves

  844. with money bags

  845. that do not grow old

  846. with a treasure

  847. in the heavens

  848. that does not fail

  849. where no thief

  850. approaches

  851. and no moth

  852. destroys

  853. for where your

  854. treasure is

  855. there will your

  856. heart be also.

  857. Now this is a

  858. hard word

  859. for us

  860. but essentially

  861. what Jesus

  862. is saying

  863. is he's saying

  864. allow yourself

  865. to be open

  866. to the possibility

  867. of giving

  868. what you have

  869. to God.

  870. Live with an open hand.

  871. Pray the prayer

  872. God

  873. all that I have

  874. belongs to you.

  875. Take it

  876. however you will

  877. and grow

  878. in my heart

  879. a compassion

  880. for others

  881. so that I'm

  882. willing to step in

  883. and I'm willing

  884. to address

  885. the needs

  886. that I see

  887. when they arise.

  888. Jesus is interested

  889. in the kind

  890. of heart

  891. that is

  892. attached

  893. to heaven

  894. to eternity.

  895. It's attached

  896. to seeking

  897. first the kingdom

  898. of God

  899. and his righteousness.

  900. Jesus is saying

  901. you need to be

  902. dependent

  903. not self-reliant.

  904. You cannot

  905. be good

  906. like God.

  907. You need to

  908. understand

  909. essentially

  910. the essence

  911. of the Old Testament

  912. summarized

  913. in two statements.

  914. Love the Lord

  915. your God

  916. and love your neighbor

  917. as yourself.

  918. And as you come

  919. to understand

  920. a heart

  921. that is tuned

  922. to obedience

  923. to God

  924. and love

  925. for God

  926. it's going

  927. to reflect

  928. itself

  929. in a posture

  930. of

  931. generosity

  932. for others.

  933. And by the way

  934. it's not

  935. that Jesus

  936. is commending

  937. a works-based

  938. righteousness.

  939. Give all that you have

  940. and then you'll be saved.

  941. No.

  942. what he's trying

  943. to help

  944. this rich young ruler

  945. understand

  946. is that a heart

  947. of faith

  948. in salvation

  949. is a heart

  950. that depends

  951. on God

  952. for everything

  953. not just salvation.

  954. That's what

  955. is at the heart

  956. of Jesus' command.

  957. Love God

  958. like God

  959. loves others.

  960. 1 John 3

  961. 16-18

  962. brings us home

  963. where John says

  964. by this we know

  965. love.

  966. He laid down

  967. his life for us.

  968. We ought also

  969. to lay down

  970. our lives

  971. for the brothers.

  972. If we're going

  973. to love

  974. like Jesus

  975. we're going

  976. to be those

  977. who lay

  978. our lives

  979. down for

  980. the saints.

  981. As Paul

  982. will say

  983. in 2 Corinthians

  984. he says

  985. he who is rich

  986. made himself

  987. poor

  988. so that we

  989. through his

  990. poverty

  991. might enjoy

  992. his riches.

  993. By his grace

  994. we've been saved.

  995. The same

  996. posture exists

  997. in the heart

  998. of believers.

  999. A willingness

  1000. to live

  1001. with an open

  1002. hand.

  1003. A willingness

  1004. to distribute

  1005. to those

  1006. who are in need.

  1007. As we find

  1008. in verse 17

  1009. if anyone

  1010. has this world's

  1011. goods

  1012. sees his brother

  1013. in need

  1014. and closes

  1015. his heart

  1016. against him

  1017. how does

  1018. God's love

  1019. abide in him?

  1020. Little children

  1021. let us not

  1022. love in word

  1023. or talk

  1024. but in deed

  1025. in truth.

  1026. let the

  1027. rubber

  1028. meet the

  1029. road

  1030. as it

  1031. relates

  1032. to

  1033. dependence

  1034. on God

  1035. and a

  1036. willingness

  1037. to follow

  1038. in God's

  1039. steps

  1040. by meeting

  1041. the needs

  1042. of those

  1043. around you.

  1044. Fortunately

  1045. our passage

  1046. doesn't end

  1047. there.

  1048. God

  1049. is dependable

  1050. because God

  1051. is good

  1052. and in the

  1053. final verses

  1054. here

  1055. we can

  1056. depend

  1057. on God

  1058. because

  1059. we have

  1060. a God

  1061. who saves.

  1062. You can

  1063. depend

  1064. on a God

  1065. who saves

  1066. and I

  1067. draw

  1068. these points

  1069. out of

  1070. verse 26

  1071. and 27

  1072. just look

  1073. at those

  1074. with me

  1075. briefly

  1076. we're going

  1077. to just

  1078. quickly

  1079. move our

  1080. way through

  1081. these verses

  1082. it says

  1083. those who

  1084. heard

  1085. it said

  1086. then who

  1087. could be

  1088. saved?

  1089. But he

  1090. said

  1091. what is

  1092. impossible

  1093. with man

  1094. is possible

  1095. with God.

  1096. God

  1097. overcomes

  1098. the impossibility

  1099. he overcomes

  1100. our rebellion

  1101. he overcomes

  1102. our self-reliance

  1103. he overcomes

  1104. our blasphemy

  1105. to give us

  1106. himself

  1107. through Jesus

  1108. Christ

  1109. and to draw

  1110. us into

  1111. faith in him

  1112. and to forgive

  1113. us of sins

  1114. and bridge

  1115. the gap

  1116. and usher

  1117. us into

  1118. salvation

  1119. to lead us

  1120. home

  1121. to heaven

  1122. you can

  1123. depend

  1124. on a God

  1125. who saves

  1126. he overcomes

  1127. the impossible

  1128. in verses

  1129. 23 to 25

  1130. Jesus wants

  1131. to establish

  1132. that no one

  1133. can save

  1134. themselves

  1135. salvation

  1136. only comes

  1137. from the

  1138. Lord

  1139. notice

  1140. it says

  1141. in verse

  1142. 23

  1143. when he

  1144. heard these

  1145. things

  1146. speaking

  1147. of the

  1148. rich

  1149. young

  1150. ruler

  1151. he

  1152. became

  1153. very

  1154. sad

  1155. for he

  1156. was

  1157. extremely

  1158. rich

  1159. Jesus

  1160. seeing

  1161. that he

  1162. had become

  1163. sad

  1164. said

  1165. how difficult

  1166. it is

  1167. for those

  1168. who have

  1169. wealth

  1170. to enter

  1171. the kingdom

  1172. of God

  1173. for it

  1174. is easier

  1175. for a

  1176. camel

  1177. to go

  1178. through

  1179. the eye

  1180. of a

  1181. needle

  1182. than

  1183. for a

  1184. rich

  1185. person

  1186. to enter

  1187. the kingdom

  1188. of God

  1189. in Mark's

  1190. account

  1191. in Mark

    Mark 10:22

  1192. chapter 10

  1193. verse 22

  1194. it describes

  1195. this man

  1196. as being

  1197. disheartened

  1198. disheartened

  1199. by the

  1200. saying

  1201. he went

  1202. away

  1203. sorrowful

  1204. for he

  1205. had great

  1206. possessions

  1207. it broke

  1208. his heart

  1209. it crushed

  1210. him

  1211. in his

  1212. spirit

  1213. in Matthew

    Matthew 19:22

  1214. chapter 19

  1215. verse 22

  1216. it says

  1217. when the

  1218. young man

  1219. heard this

  1220. he went

  1221. away

  1222. sorrowful

  1223. for he

  1224. had great

  1225. possessions

  1226. in our

  1227. passage

  1228. he became

  1229. very sad

  1230. it's important

  1231. to note

  1232. as one

  1233. commentator

  1234. notes

  1235. sadness

  1236. does not

  1237. always lead

  1238. to repentance

  1239. your sadness

  1240. doesn't

  1241. compare

  1242. or correlate

  1243. to repentance

  1244. you can be

  1245. sad

  1246. you can be

  1247. grieved

  1248. you can be

  1249. sorrowful

  1250. it doesn't

  1251. mean you're

  1252. saved

  1253. because only

  1254. godly sorrow

  1255. produces

  1256. repentance

  1257. and that

  1258. kind of

  1259. sorrow

  1260. is the

  1261. kind of

  1262. sorrow

  1263. that leads

  1264. to turning

  1265. it leads

  1266. to dependence

  1267. it leads

  1268. to trust

  1269. it leads

  1270. to forgiveness

  1271. it leads

  1272. to looking

  1273. to Jesus

  1274. as the only

  1275. way

  1276. for salvation

  1277. recognizing

  1278. one's own

  1279. deficiency

  1280. and looking

  1281. to god

  1282. for help

  1283. sadness

  1284. does not

  1285. always lead

  1286. to repentance

  1287. as we find

  1288. here

  1289. to receive

  1290. the treasure

  1291. he wants

  1292. speaking

  1293. of this

  1294. rich young

  1295. ruler

  1296. to receive

  1297. the treasure

  1298. he wants

  1299. the ruler

  1300. must give up

  1301. the treasure

  1302. he has

  1303. and that's

  1304. true for

  1305. every one

  1306. of us

  1307. in the room

  1308. if we want

  1309. to enjoy

  1310. and experience

  1311. the treasure

  1312. of god

  1313. we need

  1314. to be willing

  1315. to lay down

  1316. whatever earthly

  1317. treasures

  1318. we have here

  1319. give them

  1320. over to god

  1321. with an open

  1322. hand

  1323. entrust them

  1324. to him

  1325. so we can

  1326. enjoy

  1327. a life

  1328. of confidence

  1329. and faith

  1330. and trust

  1331. in him

  1332. that he

  1333. can show

  1334. through even

  1335. great trials

  1336. that he's

  1337. dependable

  1338. that's what

  1339. the christian

  1340. life is

  1341. intended to

  1342. produce in

  1343. us

  1344. a life of

  1345. dependence

  1346. not a life

  1347. of self

  1348. reliance

  1349. jesus

  1350. confronts

  1351. this man

  1352. because no

  1353. one can

  1354. save

  1355. themselves

  1356. and then

  1357. he turns

  1358. in verse

  1359. 26 and

  1360. 27

  1361. to demonstrate

  1362. once again

  1363. god alone

  1364. can save

  1365. he is the

  1366. god who

  1367. saves

  1368. verse 26

  1369. those who

  1370. heard it

  1371. said

  1372. who then

  1373. can be

  1374. saved

  1375. but he

  1376. said

  1377. the things

  1378. which are

  1379. impossible

  1380. with men

  1381. are possible

  1382. with god

  1383. christ's

  1384. response to

  1385. this situation

  1386. of course

  1387. shattered their

  1388. conventional wisdom

  1389. in their minds

  1390. they felt as

  1391. though this

  1392. rich man

  1393. had it all

  1394. together

  1395. he was the

  1396. picture of

  1397. god's favor

  1398. and blessing

  1399. on his life

  1400. and he was

  1401. a person

  1402. who was

  1403. devout

  1404. at least

  1405. externally

  1406. in every

  1407. way

  1408. certainly

  1409. this man

  1410. is going

  1411. to heaven

  1412. but what

  1413. this man

  1414. could not

  1415. understand

  1416. is that

  1417. it didn't

  1418. depend on

  1419. him

  1420. his riches

  1421. his goodness

  1422. his supposed

  1423. goodness

  1424. his position

  1425. in the

  1426. community

  1427. the apparent

  1428. favor of

  1429. god on

  1430. his life

  1431. was only

  1432. a barrier

  1433. was just

  1434. an obstacle

  1435. to true

  1436. conversion

  1437. because he

  1438. was depending

  1439. on that

  1440. rather than

  1441. depending

  1442. on god

  1443. luke chapter

    Luke 12:21

  1444. 12 verse

  1445. 21 says

  1446. the one

  1447. who lays

  1448. up treasure

  1449. for himself

  1450. is not

  1451. rich

  1452. towards god

  1453. do we see

  1454. our wealth

  1455. as an opportunity

  1456. for generosity

  1457. do we see

  1458. our

  1459. our resources

  1460. as a means

  1461. of growing

  1462. in faith

  1463. in god

  1464. as a

  1465. stewardship

  1466. and a

  1467. means of

  1468. strengthening

  1469. relationship

  1470. with other

  1471. believers

  1472. that god

  1473. has put us

  1474. in community

  1475. with

  1476. are we

  1477. recognizing

  1478. that all

  1479. of the

  1480. blessings

  1481. that god

  1482. has given

  1483. to us

  1484. through

  1485. financial

  1486. wealth

  1487. is a

  1488. means by

  1489. which we

  1490. can grow

  1491. in faith

  1492. in him

  1493. and by

  1494. the way

  1495. from the

  1496. standpoint

  1497. of where

  1498. we stand

  1499. as a

  1500. people

  1501. in America

  1502. in relation

  1503. to the rest

  1504. of the world

  1505. I just did

  1506. this quick

  1507. survey

  1508. if your

  1509. combined

  1510. household

  1511. income

  1512. is

  1513. $50,000

  1514. and my

  1515. guess is

  1516. that most

  1517. everyone

  1518. in this

  1519. room

  1520. is about

  1521. almost

  1522. there

  1523. and you

  1524. have a

  1525. house

  1526. $50,000

  1527. and you

  1528. have a

  1529. house

  1530. then you

  1531. are in

  1532. the top

  1533. 10%

  1534. of the

  1535. world's

  1536. richest

  1537. people

  1538. we are

  1539. a rich

  1540. nation

  1541. and so

  1542. it's

  1543. incumbent

  1544. upon us

  1545. as

  1546. those

  1547. who are

  1548. putting our

  1549. faith in

  1550. God

  1551. to demonstrate

  1552. our

  1553. dependence

  1554. upon

  1555. God

  1556. the

  1557. responsibility

  1558. and the

  1559. accountability

  1560. we have

  1561. is that

  1562. much more

  1563. finally

  1564. in verses

  1565. 28 and

  1566. 30

  1567. we recognize

  1568. that the

  1569. dependence on

  1570. God leads

  1571. to great

  1572. reward

  1573. that it's

  1574. not empty

  1575. that we're

  1576. not laying

  1577. down

  1578. the things

  1579. that we

  1580. have

  1581. and turning

  1582. them over

  1583. to God

  1584. in a way

  1585. that doesn't

  1586. have great

  1587. benefits to

  1588. us

  1589. all throughout

  1590. the gospels

  1591. Jesus is

  1592. commending

  1593. laying up

  1594. treasures for

  1595. ourselves in

  1596. heaven

  1597. but not just

  1598. what happens

  1599. there

  1600. what we find

  1601. in our

  1602. passages

  1603. there are

  1604. benefits

  1605. in the

  1606. here and

  1607. now

  1608. notice

  1609. verse 28

  1610. and Peter

  1611. said see

  1612. we have

  1613. left our

  1614. homes and

  1615. followed you

  1616. and he said

  1617. to them

  1618. truly I say

  1619. to you

  1620. there is no

  1621. one who

  1622. has left

  1623. house or

  1624. wife or

  1625. brother or

  1626. parent or

  1627. child for

  1628. the sake of

  1629. the kingdom

  1630. of God

  1631. who will

  1632. not receive

  1633. many times

  1634. more in

  1635. this time

  1636. and in

  1637. the age to

  1638. come

  1639. eternal

  1640. life

  1641. there are

  1642. benefits

  1643. in the

  1644. here and

  1645. now

  1646. for

  1647. dependence

  1648. on God

  1649. and not

  1650. just what

  1651. we gain

  1652. in terms

  1653. of relationship

  1654. with him

  1655. and intimacy

  1656. and seeing

  1657. his faithfulness

  1658. and growing

  1659. in our

  1660. walk

  1661. with him

  1662. but just

  1663. look around

  1664. look around

  1665. at how

  1666. your family

  1667. has grown

  1668. because of

  1669. what Christ

  1670. has accomplished

  1671. in making

  1672. us one

  1673. together

  1674. and this is

  1675. what Jesus

  1676. draws attention

  1677. to

  1678. his mother

  1679. and brothers

  1680. came

  1681. to visit

  1682. him

  1683. and he says

  1684. in Luke

    Luke 8:21

  1685. chapter 8

  1686. verse 21

  1687. he says

  1688. this

  1689. he answered

  1690. them

  1691. my mother

  1692. and my

  1693. brothers

  1694. are those

  1695. who hear

  1696. the word

  1697. of God

  1698. and do

  1699. it

  1700. whatever

  1701. sacrifices

  1702. you make

  1703. for the

  1704. sake

  1705. of the

  1706. kingdom

  1707. today

  1708. are petty

  1709. compared

  1710. to the

  1711. all surpassing

  1712. glory

  1713. of God

  1714. and the

  1715. wonder

  1716. of what

  1717. God

  1718. has offered

  1719. to us

  1720. through

  1721. the company

  1722. of his

  1723. saints

  1724. through the

  1725. fellowship

  1726. that we

  1727. enjoy

  1728. through the

  1729. giving

  1730. and receiving

  1731. that happens

  1732. among

  1733. believers

  1734. as they

  1735. are investing

  1736. in one

  1737. another

  1738. and sharing

  1739. with one

  1740. another

  1741. and encouraging

  1742. and shepherding

  1743. and helping

  1744. the benefits

  1745. that we enjoy

  1746. in the economy

  1747. that God

  1748. has created

  1749. through salvation

  1750. that draws

  1751. us in

  1752. together

  1753. and makes

  1754. us one

  1755. through Christ

  1756. what a

  1757. blessing

  1758. nothing is

  1759. lost

  1760. everything

  1761. is gained

  1762. are we

  1763. going to be

  1764. those

  1765. who are

  1766. willing

  1767. to walk

  1768. in dependence

  1769. day by

  1770. day

  1771. trusting

  1772. in God

  1773. for the

  1774. daily bread

  1775. willing

  1776. to give

  1777. God

  1778. with an

  1779. open hand

  1780. saying

  1781. whatever

  1782. I have

  1783. Lord

  1784. it belongs

  1785. to you

  1786. help me

  1787. to use

  1788. it

  1789. and help

  1790. me to

  1791. grow

  1792. in my

  1793. dependence

  1794. on you

  1795. through

  1796. my

  1797. stewardship

  1798. and through

  1799. blessing

  1800. those around

  1801. me

  1802. may I

  1803. demonstrate

  1804. through my

  1805. life

  1806. that you

  1807. are faithful

  1808. and dependable

  1809. you are

  1810. trustworthy

  1811. may the

  1812. gospel shine

  1813. through us

  1814. as we depend

  1815. on him

  1816. this way

  1817. let's pray

  1818. Lord

  1819. thank you

  1820. for the

  1821. times that you

  1822. put your

  1823. finger in our

  1824. chest

  1825. and you

  1826. help us

  1827. to understand

  1828. that the

  1829. truths that are

  1830. there are

  1831. inescapable

  1832. and really

  1833. as we come

  1834. to this

  1835. passage

  1836. we all

  1837. walk away

  1838. coming to

  1839. realize that

  1840. we're not a

  1841. whole lot

  1842. different

  1843. from this

  1844. rich young

  1845. ruler

  1846. in that

  1847. we

  1848. struggle

  1849. with the

  1850. idea

  1851. of living

  1852. with an

  1853. open hand

  1854. of entrusting

  1855. our resources

  1856. to you

  1857. how radical

  1858. how even

  1859. reckless

  1860. it may seem

  1861. to sell

  1862. our possessions

  1863. and give

  1864. to the poor

  1865. that's not

  1866. good stewardship

  1867. Lord help us

  1868. to understand

  1869. what you're

  1870. calling us

  1871. to

  1872. help us

  1873. to understand

  1874. the delicate

  1875. balance between

  1876. stewardship

  1877. and faith

  1878. and how using

  1879. those resources

  1880. that you've

  1881. entrusted to us

  1882. is a means

  1883. by which we

  1884. can bless

  1885. others

  1886. but also

  1887. a means

  1888. by which

  1889. we can

  1890. grow

  1891. ourselves

  1892. in dependence

  1893. upon

  1894. the one

  1895. who will

  1896. never let

  1897. us down

  1898. the God

  1899. who is

  1900. good

  1901. and the

  1902. God

  1903. who saves

  1904. make that

  1905. picture

  1906. ever more

  1907. present

  1908. press

  1909. yourself

  1910. your image

  1911. into our

  1912. life

  1913. we pray

  1914. in Jesus

  1915. name

  1916. amen

  1917. God bless

  1918. you

  1919. have a great

  1920. week
