  1. Good morning.

  2. This morning we'll be talking specifically about the topic of prayer and looking at it in light of the book of Daniel.

  3. ! Almost often be drawing your attention to Daniel chapter 2 again, which you can find on page 738 of the Bible in the seat back in front of you.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  4. Page 738. The topic of prayer has been very interesting to study over the last few weeks.

  5. In a time where culture is so often anti-religion, anti-Christian, anti-church, even anti-God, surprisingly prayer is still a largely accepted concept and acceptable practice.

  6. So, for example, if you ask to talk to somebody about Jesus, you'll far more often find resistance than if you offer to pray for someone or indicate you are praying for someone.

  7. Now, as we begin, let's look at a few definitions of prayer from the internet.

  8. The first is from CollinsDictionary.com and it simply says,

  9. Prayer is the activity of speaking to God.

  10. Vocabulary.com says,

  11. A prayer is something you say to a god or deity.

  12. Your prayer can be silent words of thanks or a plea for help that's spoken out loud.

  13. Most religious believers say a prayer from time to time.

  14. While some people might use prayer as part of their plan for recovering from an illness,

  15. others bend their heads in prayer whenever they attend church or temple services.

  16. Then Wikipedia, which I think probably gives us a better idea of the world's view on prayer,

  17. says,

  18. Prayer is an invocation or act that seeks to activate a rapport with an object of worship through deliberate communication.

  19. In the narrow sense, the term refers to an act of supplication or intercession directed towards a deity or a deified ancestor.

  20. More generally, prayer can also have the purpose of thanksgiving or praise,

  21. and in comparative religion is closely associated with more abstract forms of meditation and with charms or spells.

  22. Prayer can take a variety of forms.

  23. It can be part of a set liturgy or ritual, and it can be performed alone or in groups.

  24. Prayer may take the form of a hymn, incantation, formal creedal statement,

  25. or a spontaneous utterance in the praying person.

  26. Today, most major religions involve prayer in one way or another.

  27. Some ritualize the act, requiring a strict sequence of actions

  28. or placing a restriction on those on who is permitted to pray,

  29. while others teach that prayer may be practiced spontaneously by anyone at any time.

  30. So, given all of that, watch this brief video about prayer from the website called Skylight,

  31. which is part of the Radiant Foundation.

  32. Today in America, we'll roll out enough prayer rugs and mats to reach coast to coast five times.

  33. Today, we'll count enough tiny prayer beads to encircle the 48 states.

  34. And today, we will light so many prayer candles and flames.

  35. They could lift 20,000 hot air balloons.

  36. But most astonishingly, today, prayer will lift her heart just a little bit higher.

  37. So, the Radiant Foundation, who produced this video,

  38. commissioned a National Day of Prayer survey in 2023,

  39. and they gathered information from almost 1,800 people ages 18 to 64

  40. that reflected the demographic diversity of the U.S. adult population.

  41. What they found was 85% of Americans connect to their higher power.

  42. 61% of those connect with a higher power through prayer.

  43. What are the top three reasons people give for praying?

  44. One, to connect with God.

  45. Two, to feel less anxious or depressed.

  46. Three, to find solutions to my problems.

  47. What is it that people are praying for?

  48. The top three are this, for loved ones in crisis,

  49. when somebody else is ill,

  50. for other people suffering or in crisis.

  51. Now, the people who said they are praying said

  52. they average about 18 minutes a day.

  53. 18 minutes a day in prayer.

  54. And after they prayed,

  55. people said they most often felt calm,

  56. grateful, optimistic, humbled.

  57. Now, of those that were surveyed,

  58. 87% of those praying

  59. had at least one prayer answered in the last 12 months.

  60. And 84% of praying Americans think

  61. your prayers are heard no matter how you believe.

  62. Now, I'm sure, like me,

  63. there are several things that stood out to you from the survey

  64. that are interesting, surprising, possibly alarming.

  65. Yet I found myself wondering

  66. how often those of us in the church

  67. find ourselves in very similar situations.

  68. taking our 18 minutes a day

  69. to connect with our higher power,

  70. trying to connect with God,

  71. trying to feel less anxious or depressed,

  72. hoping to find some solution to our problems,

  73. praying for our loved ones who are in crisis or ill,

  74. for those who are suffering,

  75. or maybe for our own challenges or needs.

  76. Praying so we can feel more calm,

  77. more grateful, more optimistic.

  78. We're probably not hoping to be humbled,

  79. but maybe hoping to have some type of transcendent

  80. or mystical experience,

  81. content with at least one answer to prayer a year,

  82. or maybe a month, maybe a week,

  83. generally believing that any prayer is authentic prayer

  84. and that God hears them all equally.

  85. You see, I think it's pretty easy for us

  86. to function in this way

  87. with this mystical, anemic, vague, worldly view of prayer,

  88. at least until you have one of those days.

  89. One of those days where your life

  90. or your marriage or your family,

  91. your job or something else

  92. that's essential or precious to you blows up.

  93. You're caught off guard,

  94. suddenly finding yourself helpless

  95. in the middle of some raging storm

  96. in a broken and fallen world.

  97. And maybe it's not the first day things blow up.

  98. Maybe it's the 30th day or the 100th day

  99. when you're facing some overwhelming loss,

  100. some feeling, some sickness,

  101. some pain, some frailty,

  102. some need,

  103. maybe a disappointment or a fear

  104. that continues without any hope of getting better.

  105. There's no light on the horizon.

  106. It's the day that you realize

  107. you're facing a problem

  108. that there's no way you can fix

  109. and there's no way you can endure.

  110. That's the day that our mystical,

  111. anemic, vague, worldly prayers fail us.

  112. All the formulas or the incantations

  113. that we've practiced in the name of prayer

  114. are not enough,

  115. leaving us wondering,

  116. does prayer really work?

  117. Does God really hear?

  118. Does God really care?

  119. The day that God seems so far away.

  120. And that's exactly the kind of day

  121. we find in Daniel chapter 2.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  122. If you would, follow along with me

  123. as I read Daniel 2 verses 1 through 11 again.

    Daniel 2:1–11

  124. Daniel 2 verses 1 through 11.

    Daniel 2:1–11

  125. It reads,

  126. In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar,

  127. Nebuchadnezzar had dreams.

  128. His spirit was troubled and his sleep left him.

  129. Then the king commanded that the magicians,

  130. the enchanters, the sorcerers, the Chaldeans

  131. be summoned to tell the king his dreams.

  132. So they came in and they stood before the king

  133. and the king said to them,

  134. I had a dream and my spirit is troubled

  135. to know the dream.

  136. Then the Chaldeans said to the king in Aramaic,

  137. O king, live forever.

  138. Tell your servants the dream

  139. and we will show you the interpretation.

  140. The king answered and said to the Chaldeans,

  141. The word for me is firm.

  142. If you do not make known to me the dream

  143. and its interpretation,

  144. you shall be torn limb from limb

  145. and your houses shall be laid in ruins.

  146. But if you show the dream and its interpretation,

  147. you will receive from me gifts and rewards

  148. and great honor.

  149. Therefore, show me the dream

  150. and its interpretation.

  151. They answered a second time and said,

  152. Let the king tell his servants the dream

  153. and we'll show its interpretation.

  154. The king answered and said,

  155. I know with certainty

  156. that you're trying to gain time

  157. because you see that the word for me is firm.

  158. If you do not make the dream known to me,

  159. there is but one sentence for you.

  160. You have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me

  161. till the times change.

  162. Therefore, tell me the dream

  163. and I shall know that you can show me its interpretation.

  164. The Chaldeans answered the king and said,

  165. There's not a man on earth

  166. who can meet the king's demand.

  167. For no great and powerful king

  168. has asked such a thing of any magician

  169. or enchanter or Chaldean.

  170. And the thing that the king asks is difficult

  171. and no one can show it to the king

  172. except the gods

  173. whose dwelling is not with flesh.

  174. You see, King Nebuchadnezzar is having one of those days.

  175. The most powerful man in the world

  176. has a dream so vivid

  177. that he's troubled.

  178. He's undone.

  179. He can't stop thinking about it.

  180. He's not sure what to do.

  181. So he calls the spiritual experts,

  182. the magicians,

  183. the enchanters,

  184. the sorcerers,

  185. the Chaldeans.

  186. Then suddenly,

  187. the spiritual experts are having one of those days.

  188. The king wants them to do what?

  189. And if they don't,

  190. they're going to be torn limb from limb

  191. and their houses laid in ruins?

  192. Suddenly, all of their collective knowledge,

  193. their power,

  194. their spiritual expertise,

  195. and their mighty prayers are undone.

  196. They're shown to be what they are,

  197. empty,

  198. anemic,

  199. powerless,

  200. merely for show.

  201. When push comes to shove,

  202. their prayers are worthless.

  203. You can hear it in their voice.

  204. The thing that the king asks is difficult.

  205. No one can show it to the king

  206. except the gods

  207. and their dwelling's not with flesh.

  208. Their argument is clear.

  209. Nobody in their right mind

  210. would expect anyone

  211. to be able to do this.

  212. Nobody's connection to God

  213. or the gods

  214. is sufficient for a task.

  215. Nobody's prayer can do that.

  216. No matter how much we want to,

  217. if we want to save our own necks,

  218. we want to save our families,

  219. it's only the gods.

  220. Only God can do what you're asking.

  221. And although we hate to admit it,

  222. king,

  223. we don't have access to him.

  224. We don't have access to them.

  225. They are not accessible.

  226. And you remember what happens.

  227. As a result,

  228. the king is enraged

  229. and decides to kill them all.

  230. He's done with all their shallow,

  231. powerless,

  232. worthless prayers,

  233. their empty counsel,

  234. all of their collective experience

  235. and supposed wisdom.

  236. That power,

  237. that counsel was worthless

  238. if they couldn't connect with the gods,

  239. if they couldn't effectively pray.

  240. But you remember what happens next.

  241. Daniel finds out

  242. about the whole decree

  243. to kill all the wise men,

  244. which would include him

  245. and his friends,

  246. Hananiah,

  247. Mishael,

  248. and Azariah.

  249. And in stark contrast

  250. to the other wise men,

  251. Daniel immediately schedules

  252. an appointment with the king

  253. to do the impossible,

  254. to do what only God can do.

  255. Then Daniel goes and tells Hananiah,

  256. Mishael,

  257. and Azariah

  258. what's going on

  259. and he asks them to pray with him,

  260. to seek mercy from the God of heaven.

  261. So they pray.

  262. Then Daniel 2.19,

  263. it's almost shocking in its brevity

  264. where it says,

  265. Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel

  266. in a vision of the night.

  267. Did you get that?

  268. They prayed.

  269. God answered.

  270. Daniel 2.25-28 continues,

  271. Then Ariok brought in Daniel

  272. before the king in haste

  273. and said thus to him,

  274. I have found among the exiles of Judah

  275. a man who will make known

  276. to the king the interpretation.

  277. The king declared to Daniel,

  278. whose name was Belteshazzar,

  279. Are you able to make known to me

  280. the dream that I have seen

  281. and its interpretation?

  282. Daniel answered the king and said,

  283. No.

  284. No wise men, enchanters, magicians,

  285. or astrologers

  286. can show to the king

  287. the mystery that the king has asked.

  288. But there is a God in heaven

  289. who reveals mysteries.

  290. And he's made known to King Nebuchadnezzar

  291. what will be in the latter days.

  292. So Daniel goes in

  293. and says the same thing

  294. the Chaldeans said.

  295. Only God can do this.

  296. But have no fear, king.

  297. There is a God in heaven

  298. and he is accessible.

  299. He reveals mysteries.

  300. And he's made known to the king

  301. what will happen.

  302. And then as you remember,

  303. they all live happily ever after.

  304. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah,

  305. tons of magicians, enchanters,

  306. sorcerers, Chaldeans,

  307. all of their families.

  308. They live happily ever after

  309. because Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah

  310. prayed asking the God of heaven for mercy.

  311. Now, I don't know about you,

  312. but that's the kind of praying I want.

  313. Prayers that reach to heaven

  314. that show there is a God in heaven,

  315. that he is accessible,

  316. that he hears my prayers,

  317. that he responds to prayer.

  318. That's the encouragement I need

  319. for my prayer life.

  320. Now, if you're at all like me,

  321. you might do what I did.

  322. Begin scouring the book of Daniel,

  323. looking for things that distinguish

  324. Daniel's praying from the praying of others.

  325. So I worked my way through Daniel

  326. numerous times,

  327. and I've compiled a list

  328. of the key characteristics

  329. of Daniel's prayers.

  330. And because I love you all,

  331. I'm going to save you so much time,

  332. and I'm going to share it

  333. with you this morning.

  334. So here we go.

  335. Daniel's method of prayer.

  336. Daniel's method of prayer.

  337. The first thing,

  338. Daniel's prayer is in response

  339. to God's word.

  340. Daniel's prayer is in response

  341. to God's word.

  342. Now, we'll see it most clearly

  343. in a few weeks

  344. when we get to Daniel 9, verse 2,

    Daniel 9:2

  345. where it says,

  346. In the first year of his reign,

  347. I, Daniel, perceived in the books

  348. the number of years that,

  349. according to the word of the Lord

  350. to Jeremiah the prophet,

  351. must pass before the end

  352. of the desolations of Jerusalem,

  353. namely 70 years.

  354. Now, I cannot prove to you

  355. what was going through Daniel's mind

  356. in his other prayers

  357. because God's word

  358. does not explicitly tell us.

  359. But I can tell you

  360. that when you look at Daniel's prayers

  361. and you notice

  362. how they line up,

  363. they're consistently aligned

  364. with scripture

  365. that was available to Daniel.

  366. So, for example,

  367. in the situation

  368. in Daniel chapter 2

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  369. that we were looking at,

  370. we see Daniel boldly go in

  371. and claim before the king

  372. that he's going to do

  373. the impossible

  374. and interpret the dream

  375. before praying about it.

  376. Now, is he being presumptuous?

  377. Well, I think based on verse 28

  378. where he says,

  379. but there is a God in heaven

  380. who reveals mysteries,

  381. that it's quite possible

  382. that Daniel already has

  383. scripture in mind.

  384. Maybe some of these verses,

  385. maybe Deuteronomy 29, 29,

  386. when after Moses has called

  387. the Israelites

  388. to recommit to God

  389. and reminded them

  390. that if they're disobedient,

  391. that they will face curses

  392. and ultimately be cast out

  393. of the land.

  394. And then Moses ends

  395. with this statement,

  396. the secret things

  397. belong to the Lord our God,

  398. but the things that are revealed

  399. belong to us

  400. and to our children forever,

  401. that we may do

  402. all the words of the law.

  403. Or maybe Psalm 25,

    Psalms 25:14

  404. verse 14 is in mind,

  405. where it says,

  406. the secret counsel of the Lord

  407. is for those who fear him,

  408. and he reveals his covenant to them.

  409. But maybe it's Amos,

  410. Amos 3, 7 says,

  411. and for the Lord God

  412. does nothing

  413. without revealing his secret

  414. to his servants,

  415. the prophets.

  416. Or Amos 4, 13,

  417. that says,

  418. for behold,

  419. he who forms the mountains

  420. and creates the wind

  421. and declares to man

  422. what is his thought,

  423. who makes the morning darkness

  424. and treads on the heights

  425. of the earth,

  426. the Lord,

  427. the God of hosts,

  428. is his name.

  429. Now,

  430. I can't prove any of that,

  431. but I think when we look

  432. at Daniel's life,

  433. as we see how Daniel's life

  434. is centered in God's word,

  435. it's reasonable to think

  436. he's not being presumptuous,

  437. but that his prayer flows

  438. out of God's word.

  439. So that's the first thing we see.

  440. Second,

  441. we see Daniel's prayer

  442. comes from a heart of humility.

  443. Daniel's prayer

  444. comes from a heart of humility.

  445. And we'll see this time and time again

  446. in Daniel's prayers,

  447. but here in Daniel 2,

  448. in verse 17,

  449. we see Daniel's humility

  450. because he goes immediately

  451. to his friends,

  452. Hananiah,

  453. Mishael,

  454. and Azariah,

  455. and says,

  456. guys,

  457. I don't know how to tell you this,

  458. but I just promised

  459. to do the impossible

  460. to the king,

  461. and if I don't get it right,

  462. we're going to die.

  463. So,

  464. I really need you to pray.

  465. We have to pray together

  466. that God will show mercy.

  467. Right?

  468. There's a humility.

  469. He doesn't feel like

  470. he has the answers.

  471. He knows who has the answers,

  472. so he asks them

  473. to pray with him.

  474. Then we see the humility

  475. in Daniel

  476. when in verse 23,

  477. immediately,

  478. after God's answered

  479. their prayer,

  480. he begins to praise God,

  481. make much of God,

  482. and in verse 23,

  483. Daniel says,

  484. to you,

  485. O God of my fathers,

  486. I give thanks and praise,

  487. for you have given me

  488. wisdom and might,

  489. and have now made known

  490. to me

  491. what we asked of you,

  492. for you have made known

  493. to us the king's matter.

  494. We see his humility

  495. in verses 26 through 28

  496. when Daniel goes into the king

  497. and says,

  498. no,

  499. I can't do this,

  500. but there is a God

  501. in heaven

  502. who reveals mysteries.

  503. And as the next few weeks

  504. go by,

  505. as we look at Daniel

  506. and you see in his prayers,

  507. you'll see time and time again

  508. that his prayer flows

  509. out of the heart

  510. of humility.

  511. And then,

  512. out of his prayers,

  513. that humility pours out

  514. on those around him.

  515. The third thing,

  516. Daniel's prayer

  517. is bold

  518. and faith-filled.

  519. Daniel's prayer

  520. is bold

  521. and faith-filled.

  522. Now,

  523. as we see Daniel's prayers

  524. in the weeks ahead,

  525. the boldness

  526. will be pretty clear,

  527. but just consider

  528. where we are

  529. in Daniel chapter 2,

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  530. okay?

  531. The Chaldeans

  532. have just said

  533. that this is so bold

  534. that no king

  535. has ever asked.

  536. No king expects this.

  537. It's not even possible.

  538. But Daniel

  539. boldly goes in

  540. and says,

  541. God,

  542. will you show me

  543. another man's dreams

  544. and tell me

  545. what they mean?

  546. I mean,

  547. what a bold request.

  548. And we're going to see

  549. later in Daniel,

  550. he asks for even

  551. more bold things.

  552. But again,

  553. it's not presumption.

  554. He's not being presumptuous.

  555. He just believes

  556. the truth of God's word.

  557. And so in faith,

  558. he's boldly asking God

  559. to act.

  560. The fourth thing we see,

  561. Daniel's prayer

  562. is seeking God's glory.

  563. Daniel's prayer

  564. is seeking God's glory.

  565. Again,

  566. we see it here

  567. in chapter 2.

  568. Once God answers

  569. their prayers

  570. in verses 20 through 22,

  571. we see Daniel say,

  572. blessed be the name

  573. of God forever

  574. and ever

  575. to whom belong

  576. wisdom and might.

  577. He changes times

  578. and seasons.

  579. He removes kings

  580. and sets up kings.

  581. He gives wisdom

  582. to the wise

  583. and knowledge

  584. to those who have

  585. understanding.

  586. He reveals deep

  587. and hidden things.

  588. He knows what is

  589. in the darkness

  590. and the light

  591. dwells with him.

  592. We see Daniel

  593. exalting God

  594. in his glory.

  595. We see it

  596. when he answers

  597. the king again

  598. and says,

  599. no,

  600. but there is

  601. a God in heaven.

  602. And ultimately,

  603. we see it

  604. in chapter 2,

  605. verse 47,

  606. because the outcome

  607. of what happens

  608. is the king

  609. bringing glory

  610. to God.

  611. It says,

  612. the king answered

  613. and said to Daniel,

  614. truly,

  615. your God

  616. is God

  617. of gods

  618. and Lord

  619. of kings

  620. and a revealer

  621. of mysteries

  622. for you have been able

  623. to reveal this mystery.

  624. And so we see

  625. this consistent

  626. commitment

  627. in Daniel's prayers

  628. and in his life

  629. for God's glory

  630. to be central,

  631. for God's glory

  632. to be the focus

  633. of it all.

  634. The fifth thing,

  635. Daniel's prayer

  636. is asking God

  637. to do

  638. what God

  639. has already

  640. promised to do,

  641. which really

  642. brings us

  643. full circle.

  644. Because Daniel

  645. starts with the word

  646. of God,

  647. because his prayer

  648. flows out of God's word,

  649. his understanding

  650. of who God

  651. has revealed himself

  652. to be,

  653. revealed what he will do,

  654. we see God,

  655. we'll see Daniel

  656. continually asking God

  657. to do the things

  658. that he's already promised,

  659. that he's already said

  660. he would do.

  661. Now,

  662. we can take all

  663. of those steps

  664. and I'm going to sum it up

  665. for you here

  666. in Daniel's method

  667. of prayer.

  668. In response

  669. to God's word,

  670. Daniel comes humbly

  671. but boldly in faith,

  672. seeking God's glory

  673. by asking him

  674. to do

  675. what he has already

  676. promised to do.

  677. So we have a good

  678. biblical method

  679. for prayer.

  680. We can see it here,

  681. we're going to see it

  682. again and again

  683. in Daniel.

  684. Not only is it a good

  685. biblical method

  686. for prayer,

  687. I would contend

  688. that if any prayer

  689. doesn't clearly reflect

  690. these pieces

  691. of this method

  692. that from a

  693. biblical perspective

  694. it's not prayer.

  695. Let me say that again

  696. a different way.

  697. If you look

  698. at your own prayers

  699. and they're not

  700. flowing from God's word,

  701. if they're not

  702. being presented

  703. humbly

  704. but boldly in faith,

  705. if they're not

  706. seeking God's glory,

  707. if you're not

  708. asking God to do

  709. what he's already

  710. promised to do,

  711. it's not really prayer.

  712. Not from the Bible's

  713. perspective.

  714. The world may call it

  715. prayer,

  716. but the Bible doesn't.

  717. So I would say

  718. it's essential

  719. for us

  720. to pursue

  721. using this method

  722. or something

  723. that embodies

  724. these principles

  725. if our desire

  726. is to truly pray.

  727. In the biblical sense,

  728. if we desire

  729. for God

  730. to hear our prayers

  731. and respond.

  732. But there's a problem.

  733. You see,

  734. the problem is

  735. all of these

  736. essential components,

  737. everything in this method,

  738. are not things

  739. we can do

  740. in our own strength.

  741. As a matter of fact,

  742. in our own power,

  743. the Bible says

  744. we cannot know God

  745. or understand his word.

  746. We cannot come

  747. with truly humble hearts.

  748. We cannot have

  749. radically bold faith.

  750. We cannot truly

  751. seek God's glory.

  752. And if we can't

  753. do those things,

  754. then we won't

  755. sincerely ask God

  756. to do

  757. what he's already

  758. promised to do.

  759. So,

  760. having found a good

  761. biblical method

  762. for prayer,

  763. we find ourselves

  764. having to at least

  765. admit or understand

  766. that the method itself

  767. is of little use

  768. without the power

  769. to pray rightly.

  770. Now,

  771. I have good news.

  772. I believe the book

  773. of Daniel

  774. makes it abundantly

  775. clear where

  776. to find that power.

  777. So,

  778. let's look at

  779. Daniel's power

  780. in prayer.

  781. We're going to look

  782. at six verses

  783. from Daniel.

  784. And I think

  785. it will be as clear

  786. to you as I think

  787. it is there.

  788. We're going to start

  789. with Daniel 4,

    Daniel 4:8

  790. verse 8.

  791. Daniel 4,

    Daniel 4:8

  792. verse 8.

  793. It says,

  794. At last,

  795. Daniel came in

  796. before me,

  797. he who was named

  798. Belteshazzar

  799. after the name

  800. of my God,

  801. and in whom

  802. is the spirit

  803. of the holy gods.

  804. Now,

  805. just a little footnote

  806. here.

  807. That word God,

  808. there's some discussion

  809. among people

  810. that know Aramaic

  811. and are smarter

  812. than me.

  813. And if you're using

  814. the ESV,

  815. you'll actually find

  816. you have a footnote.

  817. They're not sure

  818. if it's plural

  819. or singular.

  820. Now,

  821. the truth is,

  822. I think,

  823. whatever the Babylonians

  824. thought,

  825. I can't say.

  826. But we know

  827. that ultimately

  828. what it's saying

  829. is singular.

  830. The spirit

  831. of the holy God.

  832. Anyway,

  833. end footnote.

  834. Look at verse,

  835. chapter 4,

  836. verse 9.

  837. It says,

  838. O Belteshazzar,

  839. chief of the magicians,

  840. because I know

  841. that the spirit

  842. of the holy gods

  843. is in you

  844. and that no mystery

  845. is too difficult

  846. for you,

  847. tell me the visions

  848. of my dream.

  849. Daniel 4,

  850. 18.

  851. This dream

  852. I,

  853. King Nebuchadnezzar,

  854. saw,

  855. and you,

  856. O Belteshazzar,

  857. tell me the interpretation,

  858. because all the wise men

  859. in my kingdom

  860. are not able

  861. to make known

  862. to me the interpretation,

  863. but you are able,

  864. for the spirit

  865. of the holy gods

  866. is in you.

  867. Daniel 5,

  868. 10,

  869. and 11.

  870. The queen,

  871. because of the words

  872. of the king

  873. and his lords,

  874. came into the banqueting hall

  875. and the queen declared,

  876. O king,

  877. live forever.

  878. Let not your thoughts

  879. alarm you

  880. or your color change.

  881. There is a man

  882. in your kingdom

  883. in whom

  884. is the spirit

  885. of the holy gods.

  886. Daniel 5,

  887. 14.

  888. I have heard of you,

  889. that the spirit

  890. of the holy gods

  891. is in you

  892. and that light

  893. and understanding

  894. and excellent wisdom

  895. are found in you.

  896. Daniel 6,

  897. 3.

  898. Then this Daniel

  899. became distinguished

  900. above all the other officials

  901. and satraps

  902. because an excellent spirit

  903. was in him

  904. and the king

  905. planned to set him

  906. over the whole kingdom.

  907. Do you see it?

  908. The spirit of God

  909. or the holy spirit

  910. is Daniel's power

  911. for prayer.

  912. Now,

  913. honestly,

  914. there can be no true,

  915. authentic,

  916. powerful,

  917. biblical prayer

  918. without us having

  919. the spirit of God

  920. in us.

  921. Now,

  922. we can offer invocations

  923. that seek to activate

  924. a rapport

  925. with an object of worship

  926. through deliberate communication.

  927. We can practice

  928. abstract forms

  929. of meditation

  930. or seek to produce

  931. charms or spells.

  932. We can offer

  933. a set liturgy

  934. or a ritual,

  935. recite an incantation,

  936. rehearse a formal

  937. creedal statement,

  938. or have a spontaneous

  939. utterance.

  940. We can wish,

  941. we can hope,

  942. we can manifest,

  943. but we cannot pray.

  944. Not in any

  945. biblical sense

  946. of the word

  947. without the Holy Spirit

  948. within us.

  949. And as a matter of fact,

  950. I'll go a step further

  951. and say

  952. at least

  953. 84% of those

  954. trying to connect

  955. with their higher power

  956. through prayer

  957. are doing

  958. no such thing

  959. because what you believe

  960. makes all the difference

  961. in whether or not

  962. your prayers are heard.

  963. A few verses.

  964. Psalm 66, 18.

  965. If I had cherished

  966. iniquity in my heart,

  967. the Lord would not

  968. have listened.

  969. Proverbs 28, 9.

  970. If one turns away

  971. his ear

  972. from hearing the law,

  973. even his prayer

  974. is an abomination.

  975. Isaiah 59, 2.

  976. But your iniquities

  977. have made a separation

  978. between you

  979. and your God

  980. and your sins

  981. have hidden

  982. his face from you

  983. so that he does not hear.

  984. And then Jesus

  985. in John 14, 6 says,

  986. I am the way,

  987. the truth,

  988. and the life.

  989. No one comes

  990. to the Father

  991. except through me.

  992. Now,

  993. maybe that seems

  994. harsh to you

  995. to say that God

  996. doesn't listen

  997. to the prayers

  998. of those

  999. who do not have

  1000. the Holy Spirit.

  1001. But,

  1002. if you stop

  1003. and consider

  1004. how the Bible

  1005. describes

  1006. every one of us

  1007. that does not

  1008. have the Holy Spirit

  1009. indwelling them,

  1010. it makes sense.

  1011. Look at these verses.

  1012. Ephesians 2, 1-3.

  1013. It describes us

  1014. as being dead

  1015. in trespasses

  1016. and sins,

  1017. sons of disobedience,

  1018. by nature,

  1019. children of wrath

  1020. like the rest

  1021. of mankind.

  1022. Colossians 1, 21 says,

  1023. we're alienated

  1024. from God

  1025. and hostile in mind.

  1026. Romans 1, 21-25 says,

  1027. we're without excuse

  1028. because although

  1029. we know God,

  1030. we do not honor

  1031. him as God

  1032. or give thanks

  1033. to him.

  1034. As a result,

  1035. we become futile

  1036. in our thinking.

  1037. Our foolish hearts

  1038. are darkened.

1039. We claim to be wise

  1040. but we're fools.

  1041. We exchange the glory

  1042. of the immortal God

  1043. for images.

  1044. We exchange the truth

  1045. about God

  1046. for a lie

  1047. and worship

  1048. and serve the creature

  1049. rather than the creator.

  1050. Romans 3, 9-12 says,

  1051. we're all under sin.

  1052. There are none righteous.

  1053. No one understands.

  1054. No one seeks God.

  1055. All have turned aside.

  1056. No one does good.

  1057. Not even one.

  1058. Romans 5, 10 says,

1059. we are enemies of God.

  1060. Romans 8, 7 and 8 says,

1061. we are hostile to God

  1062. and cannot please God.

1063. So, since that's our condition

  1064. without the Holy Spirit,

1065. I think it makes perfect sense

  1066. to say that God

1067. does not hear our prayers.

1068. Or to say it another way,

  1069. without the Holy Spirit,

  1070. God is not accessible

  1071. to any of us.

  1072. So true prayer

  1073. is impossible.

  1074. Now hopefully,

  1075. that leads you

  1076. to the next question.

  1077. And I would say,

  1078. in some ways,

  1079. the most important

  1080. foundational question

1081. on the topic of prayer,

1082. how do I know for sure

1083. I have the Holy Spirit?

  1084. Well,

  1085. the Apostle Peter

  1086. answers that question

  1087. so simply and clearly

1088. to the people of Jerusalem

1089. on the day of Pentecost.

  1090. Let's look at it.

  1091. Acts 2,

  1092. 36 through 39.

  1093. Peter says,

  1094. Let all the house

  1095. of Israel,

  1096. therefore,

  1097. know for certain

1098. that God has made him

  1099. both Lord and Christ,

  1100. this Jesus

  1101. whom you crucified.

  1102. Now,

  1103. when they heard this,

1104. they were cut to the heart

1105. and they said to Peter

1106. and the rest of the apostles,

  1107. Brothers,

  1108. what shall we do?

1109. And Peter said to them,

  1110. Repent

  1111. and be baptized

  1112. every one of you

1113. in the name of Jesus Christ

  1114. for the forgiveness

  1115. of your sins

  1116. and you will receive

  1117. the gift

  1118. of the Holy Spirit

  1119. for the promise

  1120. is for you

  1121. and for your children

  1122. and for all

  1123. who are far off,

  1124. everyone whom the Lord

  1125. our God calls

  1126. to himself.

  1127. So,

  1128. when we respond

  1129. in faith,

1130. believing what the Bible says,

  1131. that Jesus is both

  1132. our Lord and Savior,

  1133. when we seek forgiveness

  1134. for our sin

  1135. by admitting them

1136. and turning away from them,

  1137. desiring to be united

  1138. to Jesus Christ,

  1139. we are filled

  1140. with the Holy Spirit

  1141. and become

  1142. a child of God.

  1143. Now,

  1144. if that hasn't happened

  1145. in your life

  1146. yet today,

  1147. it can.

  1148. It can.

1149. Let me just encourage you,

  1150. don't leave without coming

  1151. and talking to me

1152. or talking to one of the people

  1153. around you

1154. because it can happen today.

  1155. And once,

  1156. once you are united

  1157. to Jesus

  1158. and filled

  1159. with the Holy Spirit,

  1160. that changes everything.

  1161. That makes God accessible.

  1162. That makes prayer

  1163. truly possible.

1164. Look at what Ephesians 2,

  1165. 13 through 22 says.

  1166. But now,

  1167. in Christ Jesus,

1168. you who once were far off

  1169. have been brought near

1170. by the blood of Christ.

1171. For he himself is our peace,

1172. who has made us both one

  1173. and has broken down

  1174. in his flesh

  1175. the dividing wall

  1176. of hostility

  1177. by abolishing

  1178. the law of commandments

  1179. expressed in ordinances,

1180. that he might create in himself

  1181. one new man

1182. in place of the two,

  1183. so making peace

  1184. and might reconcile us

  1185. both to God

  1186. in one body

  1187. through the cross,

  1188. thereby killing

  1189. the hostility.

  1190. And he came

  1191. and preached peace

1192. to you who were far off

  1193. and peace

1194. to those who were near.

  1195. Verse 18.

  1196. For through him

  1197. we both have access

  1198. in one spirit

  1199. to the Father.

1200. So then you're no longer

  1201. strangers

  1202. and aliens,

  1203. but you're fellow citizens

  1204. with the saints

  1205. and members

1206. of the household of God,

  1207. built on the foundation

  1208. of the apostles

  1209. and the prophets,

  1210. Christ Jesus himself

  1211. being the cornerstone

1212. in whom the whole structure

  1213. being joined together

1214. grows into a holy temple

  1215. in the Lord.

  1216. In him you also

  1217. are being built together

  1218. into a dwelling place

  1219. for God

  1220. by the Spirit.

1221. We can only have access

  1222. to God

  1223. and have the privilege

  1224. and the delight

  1225. of praying

  1226. because of Jesus

  1227. and our union

  1228. to him

  1229. through the Holy Spirit.

  1230. Remember,

  1231. Jesus himself said

  1232. in John 14, 6,

  1233. I am the way,

  1234. the truth,

  1235. and the life.

1236. No one comes to the Father

  1237. except through me.

  1238. But he goes on

  1239. in John 15,

  1240. 7 through 9,

  1241. and he says,

1242. if you abide in me

  1243. and my words

  1244. abide in you,

  1245. ask whatever you wish

1246. and it will be done

  1247. for you.

  1248. By this my Father

  1249. is glorified

1250. that you bear much fruit

1251. and so prove to be

  1252. my disciples

1253. as the Father has loved me

1254. so have I loved you.

  1255. Abide in my love.

  1256. You see,

  1257. Jesus,

1258. as the perfect Son of God,

  1259. being fully God

  1260. and fully man,

  1261. has the innate ability

  1262. and access

  1263. to talk to God,

  1264. the Father.

  1265. They've been in

  1266. intimate communion

  1267. and conversation

1268. for all of eternity past

  1269. and will be

1270. for all of eternity future.

  1271. And so,

  1272. it's in being united

  1273. to Jesus

  1274. that his ability

  1275. and access

  1276. to commune

  1277. and converse

  1278. with God the Father

  1279. becomes ours.

  1280. There is really

  1281. only one method

  1282. of true prayer,

  1283. only one power

  1284. for true prayer.

  1285. It's Jesus.

  1286. Even Daniel's prayer,

  1287. though he didn't

  1288. as fully understand it

  1289. as we can

  1290. from this point

  1291. in history,

  1292. was prayer

  1293. through Jesus.

  1294. And I don't think

  1295. it will stretch you

  1296. at all

  1297. if we take

1298. and look at the fact

  1299. that we talked

  1300. about Daniel's

  1301. method for prayer

  1302. being this.

  1303. In response

  1304. to God's word,

  1305. Daniel comes humbly

  1306. but boldly in faith

  1307. seeking God's glory

  1308. by asking him

1309. to do what he has

  1310. already promised to do.

1311. And see it even more

  1312. clearly in Jesus' life.

  1313. In response

  1314. to the Father's word,

  1315. Jesus comes humbly

  1316. but boldly in faith

  1317. seeking the Father's glory

  1318. by asking him

  1319. to do what he's

  1320. already promised to do.

1321. And as we always find,

  1322. Jesus is the better,

  1323. perfect version

1324. of all of our heroes

  1325. of the faith.

1326. Jesus is the better Adam,

  1327. the better Abraham,

  1328. the better Moses,

  1329. the better Joshua,

  1330. the better David,

  1331. the better Elijah.

  1332. And as we work

  1333. our way through Daniel

1334. and see the extraordinary ways

  1335. that God's love

  1336. and faithfulness

1337. to Daniel and his friends

  1338. shows through

  1339. in lives

  1340. that are worthy

  1341. of learning from

  1342. and imitating,

  1343. we must not forget

1344. Jesus is the better Daniel.

  1345. So as we take

  1346. Daniel's method of prayer

1347. and his power in prayer

  1348. and look at them

1349. in light of the central figure

1350. and hero of the Bible,

  1351. really the central figure

1352. and hero of all history,

  1353. Jesus Christ,

1354. I think we can end

1355. with this definition of prayer.

  1356. Prayer is the privilege

  1357. and delight we receive

  1358. from our union

  1359. with Jesus Christ

  1360. through the Holy Spirit

1361. to respond to God's word

  1362. by coming in worship

  1363. to commune with him

  1364. and humbly but boldly

  1365. in faith

  1366. seeking the Father's glory

1367. by asking him to do

  1368. what he's already promised

  1369. to do.

1370. Now, I don't know where you are

  1371. in your prayer life

  1372. but if like me,

  1373. you find yourself realizing

1374. that it's not what it should be,

1375. that it's not what it can be,

1376. then I just want to end

  1377. with four simple steps

1378. that will help move you

  1379. in the right direction

  1380. and these are taken

  1381. from the writings

  1382. of Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  1383. a godly pastor

1384. and a man of prayer,

1385. but it will just start

  1386. to move you

  1387. in the right direction.

  1388. The first is,

  1389. daily,

1390. admit your failings to God

  1391. and your inability

1392. to pray as you should

  1393. without his empowering

  1394. through the Holy Spirit

1395. and ask him to do that.

1396. Ask him to empower you

  1397. through the Holy Spirit

1398. for a life of authentic prayer.

  1399. Two,

  1400. create time and space

1401. to enjoy drawing near to God.

1402. Start by reading his word

  1403. with an expectation

  1404. that he desires

1405. to speak to you through it.

  1406. Listen first.

  1407. Step three,

  1408. as the Holy Spirit

  1409. begins to direct

  1410. your thoughts

  1411. to God's revealed character,

  1412. to his plan,

  1413. to his promises.

  1414. Begin pleading

  1415. the promises of God

  1416. with holy boldness,

  1417. liberty,

  1418. and assurance.

  1419. And that word,

  1420. plead,

  1421. is important

  1422. because it embodies

  1423. that humility.

1424. We have to be careful.

  1425. Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  1426. says it well

  1427. when he says this,

  1428. do not claim,

  1429. do not demand.

  1430. Let your requests

  1431. be made known.

  1432. Let them come

  1433. from your heart.

  1434. God will understand.

1435. But we have no right

  1436. to demand,

  1437. not even revival.

  1438. Some Christians

1439. are tending to do so

  1440. at the present time.

  1441. Yes, pray urgently,

  1442. plead,

1443. use all of the arguments,

1444. use all of the promises,

  1445. but do not demand,

  1446. do not claim.

  1447. Never put yourself

  1448. into the position

  1449. of saying,

1450. if we but do this,

  1451. then that must happen.

1452. God is a sovereign Lord,

  1453. and these things

  1454. are beyond our understanding.

1455. So never let the terminology

  1456. of claiming

  1457. or demanding

  1458. be used.

  1459. So we plead

  1460. his word.

  1461. Step four,

  1462. practice being sensitive

  1463. to the leading

  1464. of the Holy Spirit.

  1465. Obeying it

  1466. as quickly

  1467. as you can,

  1468. being willing

  1469. to stop

  1470. what you're doing

  1471. and prioritize praying

  1472. whenever you feel

  1473. like that comes

  1474. to mind.

  1475. You see,

  1476. if we are willing

  1477. to invest

  1478. the time

  1479. and the effort

  1480. to pursue communion

  1481. with God

  1482. through this type

  1483. of prayer,

1484. no matter how many times

  1485. we have to commit

  1486. ourselves

  1487. to start again

  1488. and again,

  1489. you will find

  1490. in time

  1491. that we're growing

  1492. more and more intimate

  1493. with our Heavenly Father

1494. and with our loving Lord,

  1495. and we'll see it

  1496. flowing out

  1497. into every area

  1498. of our life.

  1499. Now,

  1500. in closing,

1501. we have one final commercial.

  1502. Someone last week

  1503. asked me,

  1504. does the church

  1505. still have a weekly

  1506. prayer bulletin?

  1507. Just in case

  1508. any of you

  1509. are not aware,

  1510. we have a channel

  1511. on Telegram

  1512. called The Powerhouse.

  1513. It's our prayer channel.

  1514. We share weekly prompts

  1515. on a number

  1516. of different areas

  1517. and topics

1518. that try to assist you

  1519. in thinking through

  1520. and praying through things.

  1521. Right now,

  1522. we're working through

  1523. praying the fruit

  1524. of the Spirit.

  1525. If you want more

  1526. information about it,

  1527. you can check

  1528. the Maranatha Minute

  1529. or you can come

  1530. and talk to me,

  1531. but hopefully

1532. it can be an avenue

  1533. to help you

  1534. as you seek

  1535. to grow

  1536. in your life

  1537. of prayer.

  1538. So as we end,

  1539. let's do the thing

  1540. that we have been

  1541. talking about.

  1542. Would you join me

  1543. as we pray?

  1544. Father, we thank you

  1545. for your word.

  1546. We thank you

  1547. that you've not

  1548. left us to ourselves.

  1549. Father, we confess

1550. that if it was up to us,

  1551. our vain imaginations

  1552. would never rightly

1553. conceive of who you are,

  1554. of your heart,

  1555. of your desire,

  1556. of your plan,

1557. but you have given it

1558. to us in your word.

  1559. So Father,

  1560. help us to cherish

  1561. your word.

  1562. Help us to pursue

  1563. listening to you

  1564. through your word,

  1565. desiring to hear you

  1566. for your spirit

  1567. to speak to us

  1568. and apply your word

  1569. in our lives.

  1570. Father, we confess

  1571. that we know

  1572. we cannot pray

  1573. as we should,

  1574. that it's beyond

  1575. our ability,

  1576. that we are

  1577. not diligent enough,

  1578. our faith is weak,

  1579. our inabilities

  1580. and the struggles

  1581. with our flesh

  1582. just continue

  1583. to mount against us

1584. as we seek to pray.

  1585. But Father,

1586. we know that you desire

1587. for us to draw near.

  1588. We know that you've

  1589. invited us to come

  1590. boldly to your throne

  1591. because of our

  1592. connection in Christ.

1593. So we ask that by

  1594. your spirit,

  1595. you would do

  1596. what you have said,

  1597. that you would empower

1598. us for lives of prayer,

  1599. that our prayer

  1600. would be authentic,

  1601. that it would flow

  1602. from your word,

  1603. that we would

  1604. seek your glory

  1605. by asking you

  1606. to do the things

  1607. that you have promised

  1608. to do.

  1609. Forgive us

1610. for all of the times

  1611. that we treat prayer

  1612. so lightly

  1613. with such contempt.

  1614. Father, help us,

  1615. help us to desire

  1616. and to delight

  1617. in communing with you.

1618. help us to prioritize it,

1619. to make space for it.

  1620. Help us to be

  1621. a praying church

1622. that in all of these things

  1623. you might receive

  1624. the greater glory,

  1625. that our lives

  1626. would be conformed

  1627. to the image

  1628. of your Son,

  1629. and that the world

  1630. would know

  1631. that there is

  1632. a God in heaven,

  1633. and that he is

  1634. accessible

  1635. through Jesus.

  1636. It's in his name

  1637. we pray,

  1638. Amen.
