  1. Well, what an incredible privilege it is to worship together, to be able to do that freely,

  2. ! to be able to do that consistently week after week. And it is a special delight to have Pastor

  3. ! Kenoyer back. I know he would not want me to draw attention to him. His head is still down.

  4. But he has been serving faithfully the Lord in a sister church of ours in Marion, Ohio. So Pastor,

  5. it's good to have you back and grateful for your example of service to the Lord.

  6. We have the joy of worshiping today. And one would think that to such an honor and such a privilege

  7. as this, it would be something that we would long and yearn to do on a consistent basis. And for some

  8. of you, that may and hopefully is the case. But as statistics will show or suggest, we live in an

  9. age where we are in a decline as far as worship is concerned. A poll that was put together by Gallup

  10. in March 29th of 2021 says the following. It says, American membership in houses of worship continued

  11. to decline last year, speaking of 2020, dropping below 50% for the first time in the Gallup's eight

  12. decade history. In 2020, 47% of Americans said they belonged to a church, a synagogue, or a mosque,

  13. which is down from 50% in 2018 and 70% that was registered in 1999. The decline in church membership is

  14. primarily, they say, a function of increasing numbers of Americans who express no religious affiliation.

  15. Over the past two decades, the percentage of Americans who do not identify with any religion has grown

  16. from 8% from 8% in 1998 to 13% in 2008. And now almost a quarter of Americans would say they have no

  17. religious affiliation. Church membership, they say, is also strongly correlated with age, with 66% of those who

  18. are traditionalists, meaning those born before 1946 would go to church. Baby boomers comprised 58%.

  19. 50% of those in Gen X will go to church consistently. 36% of millennials. Currently, 31% of millennials have no

  20. religious affiliation. Now those statistics give a sense of the worshiping moral erosion within our

  21. culture. But I want to remind you that worship is just as strong today as it ever was. It's just that

  22. instead of worship being oriented towards God, now worship is being confined into the person has become

  23. self-awareness, self-worship. That's what we're going to find in our passage today. The truth is that worship

  24. remains constant. It has never been more or less a reality than it is today because God has created us

  25. as people with a worshiping capacity and with a desire to worship. Worship is inherent in our design as

  26. creatures. The question, of course, then, is who or what do you worship? Worship is simply defined as

  27. as the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity. One might say that worship is to value.

  28. Worship is to prioritize. Worship is to assign worth to someone or something. Perhaps to a job, to a family,

  29. to a friend, to an identity, to money, to comfort, to leisure, to your stuff.

  30. Worship is to allow us to worship. The question that we should ask ourselves this morning as we evaluate

  31. our own lives in relation to worship is, what is the person or thing that you could not do without?

  32. Or perhaps, what is the person or thing that occupies the bulk of your time, your energy, your attention,

  33. your thinking, and your affection? What do you enjoy the most? What do you talk about the most? Now we're

  34. beginning to come and arrive a little closer, perhaps, to that object of worship and adoration,

  35. that thing that you value, the thing that is worth everything to you. It might be fair to say that this

  36. has become an object of worship in your heart and life. Paul will say in Romans chapter 1, in addressing

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  37. this issue of worship, that all of us are worshipers inherently. He says,

  38. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible

  39. attributes, namely His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived ever since the

  40. creation of the world in the things that have been made, so they are without excuse. Now just pause

  41. there for a moment. What Paul is saying is that everyone has access to the revelation of God in

  42. creation. Everyone is able to see that there is a God who is overall, and there are certain qualities

  43. about God that they can perceive because of what they recognize in creation.

  44. But to every individual, the result is now spelled out. For although they knew God, they did not glorify

  45. Him as God or give thanks to Him, but became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

  46. Claiming to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling

  47. mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Meaning, while they knew that there was a God,

  48. rather than worshiping Him as He deserved, instead they turned inward and began to make images and gods

  49. of their own creation. Essentially, they turned their focus from outward to inward, and they began to worship

  50. the creature rather than the creator. Since the beginning of creation, mankind has worshiped and will

  51. continue to worship, the question is, what is the object of your affection? Rather than glorifying the God of

  52. creation, man tends to create gods of their own making. And it's not until God opens up the eyes of the blind,

  53. not until God unlocks the door of the heart, not until God reveals the light of His gospel into the

  54. lives of those who will believe in Him, will they become those who see and are awakened spiritually.

  55. 2 Corinthians says, God has shown the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is in the image of

  56. God. It is God's work to shine that light into a heart. And until then, we're going to be those who

  57. worship the things that we create rather than worshiping the creator. But we understand that worship

  58. throughout the Scripture is not just an external thing, it involves an internal component. That's why

  59. Jesus says, love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength. It's meant to

  60. involve the entire and total part of an individual. Jesus, when addressing worship with His audience,

  61. in Matthew chapter 15, verse 8 and 9, says this,

    Matthew 15:8

  62. This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. In vain do they worship me,

  63. teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. They perform their religious duties,

  64. they show up to church on a regular basis, they bring their tithes, they do the things that they're

  65. asked to do, but it's only a checklist. It's not because of true affection for God.

  66. And as Piper is responding to this passage, he says this, quote,

  67. For Jesus, this worship amounts to zero. That is what vain means. In vain do they worship me.

  68. Zero. It is not worship. This is a zero worship. It is a zero if there's no heart dimension to it.

  69. So you can do as many deeds as you want, and go to as many church services as you want,

  70. and never be worshiping if it is all external, and nothing is happening in your heart towards God.

  71. End quote.

  72. This morning, are you worshiping God as one who is worshiping with your heart?

  73. Is the affection of your life that showing up from day to day as one who desires and craves after God?

  74. Is there true worship in your life? Because if not, it is a zero worship. It is a nothing worship.

  75. It is vain worship. In Matthew chapter 6 verse 24, we understand that worship cannot be mixed.

    Matthew 6:24

  76. It cannot be blended. It cannot be divided. And so Jesus will say, no one can serve two masters.

  77. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

  78. You cannot serve God and money. There are no two ways about it.

  79. There must be single-minded devotion to God and to God alone if there is true worship taking place.

  80. That's why the psalmist, in so many places throughout the Psalms, talks about the single-mindedness of his worship.

  81. In Psalm 27 verse 4, he says,

    Psalms 27:4

  82. One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

  83. to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.

  84. And then in Psalm 86 11, the psalmist says,

  85. Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth.

  86. Unite my heart to fear your name.

  87. The NIV translates it this way. I think it's helpful.

  88. Give me an undivided heart that I might fear your name.

  89. We recognize the significance and the seriousness of worship,

  90. and we recognize that God is the only one who can help us worship rightly and truly.

  91. We need his help to unite our heart so it's not divided, so it's single-minded in devotion to him.

  92. Thus, any other worship is an abomination to God.

  93. And thus, anything that competes for your attention or your affection is idolatry.

  94. It is not true worship.

  95. Not the kind of worship that brings you close to God.

  96. Even good things.

  97. This is what our passage, in a nutshell, is trying to communicate.

  98. That God alone is worthy of your worship.

  99. God alone is worthy of your worship.

  100. And we're going to see that as we make our way through Daniel chapter 3, verses 1 to 18.

    Daniel 3:1–18

  101. Just the first part of this story.

  102. And we're going to see the spotlight on worship, true worship of the one sure God.

  103. So if you would, turn with me, if you would, to Daniel chapter 3.

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  104. If you're using the Pew Bible, it's on page 739.

  105. Daniel chapter 3, verses 1 to 15.

    Daniel 3:1–15

  106. To start.

  107. I'm going to read just a few verses here in the first part of this passage to lay the groundwork,

  108. to set the context for our study as we jump in.

  109. It begins in verse 1.

  110. King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold whose height was 60 cubits and breadth 6 cubits.

  111. He set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.

  112. Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent together the satraps, the prefects, and the governors,

  113. the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the province

  114. to come to the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  115. Now verse 4.

  116. And the herald proclaimed aloud,

  117. You are commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages,

  118. that when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe,

  119. and every kind of music,

  120. you are to fall down and worship the golden image that the King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.

  121. We begin this part of our service, this part of the message,

  122. in drawing attention to Nebuchadnezzar's self-centered demand.

  123. Nebuchadnezzar's self-centered demand.

  124. And as we make our way through this passage,

  125. I want all of us to understand that Nebuchadnezzar is just a magnified,

  126. amplified version of every single one of us in this room.

  127. That whatever Nebuchadnezzar does because of the power and the liberty of his position,

  128. every single one of us would also do given the same power,

  129. the same authority, and the same liberty.

  130. Because it's in our heart.

  131. Nebuchadnezzar's self-centered demand is no different than the demands that we have made,

  132. will continue to make perhaps,

  133. and God rescues us, hopefully in the process of sanctification,

  134. from making these kinds of demands on a regular basis.

  135. Nebuchadnezzar's self-centered demand.

  136. It begins with him establishing an image of gold.

  137. His image of gold is what we look at first.

  138. This should sound strangely familiar.

  139. This towering structure,

  140. this impressive image that has been erected in front of everyone.

  141. Mighty and glistening and awe-inspiring.

  142. Reminiscent of Nebuchadnezzar's dream.

  143. In Daniel chapter 2 verse 31,

    Daniel 2:31

  144. just to back up for a moment,

  145. Daniel, in explaining the dream that Nebuchadnezzar has in chapter 2,

  146. says,

  147. You saw, O king, and behold the great image.

  148. This image, mighty and exceeding brightness, stood before you.

  149. And its appearance was frightening.

  150. And then the interpretation in verse 37,

  151. You, O king, the king of kings,

  152. to whom the God of heaven has given,

  153. the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory,

  154. you are the head of gold.

  155. And now this head of gold that was once a part of the image in his dream,

  156. with different other kinds of metals in descending order

  157. as you work your way from head to toe,

  158. now Nebuchadnezzar has decided to make the entire statue

  159. an image of gold

  160. to demonstrate the superiority of his kingdom

  161. and perhaps suggesting that his kingdom,

  162. in fact, would be the eternal kingdom.

  163. It would be the kingdom that would continue.

  164. One can't help but see the correlation with this image.

  165. One can't help but wonder if in making this image,

  166. Nebuchadnezzar is also suggesting

  167. that he will have a kingdom that will stand the test of time.

  168. This image, which is 60 cubits tall and 6 cubits wide,

  169. essentially, to put in our own vernacular,

  170. would have been 90 feet tall and 9 feet wide.

  171. This grotesque, really, image that is standing in this plane,

  172. this backdrop of this flat plane,

  173. this image standing tall on that plane

  174. to draw attention to its towering, mighty figure.

  175. A figure in this plane that was comprised of gold,

  176. which would have been glistening in the Middle Eastern sun.

  177. And the word for image that is used here in chapter 3

  178. is the same word for image that is used also in chapter 2,

  179. also suggesting that whatever image Nebuchadnezzar has created

  180. has taken human form.

  181. What is Nebuchadnezzar doing?

  182. Well, in this image, we see this massive ego

  183. of King Nebuchadnezzar.

  184. It does not say specifically,

  185. but I think we can assume that this is a representation

  186. of Nebuchadnezzar himself.

  187. Likely an image very similar to what we find in Daniel chapter 2.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  188. And here, Nebuchadnezzar is inviting all the officials

  189. of all the peoples and all the languages

  190. who are part of his empire to come and comprise themselves,

  191. present themselves, and bow in allegiance to the king.

  192. This image is also distinct from Nebuchadnezzar's gods.

  193. Three times we will read in the next several verses,

  194. in verse 12 and verse 14 and also in verse 18,

  195. the accusation is they do not serve your gods

  196. or worship your golden image,

  197. which would indicate the distinction between the gods of Babylon

  198. and this image that Nebuchadnezzar has set up.

  199. So why does he set up this image?

  200. Well, this is a test of loyalty.

  201. Elevating himself to a place of supremacy,

  202. probably trying to root out all of the opposition

  203. within his kingdom,

  204. exposing the resistance

  205. and making sure that everyone is falling in line.

  206. Now Daniel will describe what's happening next

  207. in verses 2 to 7.

  208. This image is set up, but it's set up for a purpose.

  209. We see Nebuchadnezzar's desire for worship,

  210. his desire for worship.

  211. I want to just draw your attention

  212. as we make our way through here.

  213. I want you to take notice of the number of times

  214. Nebuchadnezzar's name is used.

  215. In verse 2 it says,

  216. Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent to gather the satraps.

  217. Back up to verse 1.

  218. Sorry, I missed that.

  219. King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold.

  220. Towards the end it says,

  221. He set it up in the plain of Dura.

  222. At the end of verse 2 it says,

  223. The image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  224. Then in verse 3, towards the end,

  225. this dedication of the image

  226. that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  227. And they stood before the image

  228. that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  229. Then in verse 4,

  230. O peoples, nations, and languages,

  231. when you hear the sound of the horn,

  232. pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe,

  233. and every kind of music,

  234. you are a fall down and worship

  235. the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar

  236. has set up.

  237. And then verse 6,

  238. Whoever does not fall down in worship

  239. shall immediately be cast

  240. into the burning fiery furnace.

  241. Then at the end of verse 7,

  242. The people heard this music.

  243. All the peoples, nations, and languages

  244. fell down and worshiped the golden image

  245. that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

  246. Daniel is going through great lengths

  247. in these first seven verses

  248. to draw attention to who is on display,

  249. who is really the focal point of this ceremony.

  250. And of course,

  251. Nebuchadnezzar is at the center

  252. of the ceremony,

  253. the events that are taking place.

  254. Nebuchadnezzar is mentioned seven times.

  255. We also notice that Daniel mentions

  256. this image that is set up

  257. six times throughout the course

  258. of these seven verses.

  259. This word to set up is to stand.

  260. It's to rise up.

  261. This is all, of course,

  262. in contrast to the instructions

  263. that were given to the crowd.

  264. This image would stand up

  265. and the people were to fall down.

  266. Fall down in reverence.

  267. Fall down in worship.

  268. Fall down in allegiance to the king

  269. in his image.

  270. This image would stand.

  271. The people would fall.

  272. In the plain of Dura,

  273. as flat as it was,

  274. would be the perfect backdrop

  275. to this entire event.

  276. Notice also the composition of the group.

  277. We see seven different classes

  278. of officials that are represented

  279. in verse two.

  280. Satraps, prefects, governors,

  281. counselors, treasurers,

  282. justices, magistrates, officials.

  283. Described here from top to bottom.

  284. From the most important

  285. to the least important.

  286. To those who have the most authority

  287. to the least authority

  288. in the kingdom.

  289. This descending order, as it were,

  290. from head to toe.

  291. And that should also sound familiar.

  292. This group is also comprised of peoples

  293. from every part of the known world.

  294. Notice in verse four,

  295. the herald proclaims aloud,

  296. you are commanded,

  297. O peoples, nations, and languages.

  298. And then in verse seven,

  299. therefore,

  300. as soon as all the people

  301. heard the sound of the horn, pipe,

  302. lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe,

  303. and every kind of music,

  304. all the peoples,

  305. nations, and languages,

  306. fell down and worshipped

  307. the golden image

  308. that King Nebuchadnezzar

  309. had set up.

  310. Everybody that was somebody

  311. came to this event

  312. and everybody that was somebody

  313. bowed to this image.

  314. The leading representatives

  315. from the world

  316. assembled to pay homage

  317. to King Nebuchadnezzar.

  318. Their attendance

  319. was not optional.

  320. This test of loyalty

  321. to the kingdom

  322. was placed on every

  323. major government official

  324. that existed.

  325. But Shadrach, Meshach,

  326. and Abednego,

  327. they knew, of course,

  328. that worship to this image

  329. was worship

  330. that would be idolatry

  331. against the worship

  332. of their God.

  333. Allegiance, of course,

  334. to them,

  335. to the God of heaven

  336. was at stake.

  337. And we move to verses six,

  338. excuse me,

  339. verses eight to 12.

  340. We find to reinforce

  341. this command

  342. that Nebuchadnezzar gives,

  343. we find his forceful intimidation.

  344. Nebuchadnezzar is serious

  345. about compliance.

  346. And so he sets in motion

  347. the consequences

  348. that will help to communicate

  349. the greatest severity.

  350. In Daniel chapter three,

  351. verse six,

  352. we see this.

  353. Whoever does not fall down

  354. and worship

  355. shall immediately be cast

  356. into a burning,

  357. fiery furnace.

  358. Nebuchadnezzar probably chose

  359. the fiery furnace

  360. as a means of convenience

  361. because it would be a kiln

  362. like this burning,

  363. fiery furnace

  364. that would be necessary

  365. in order to melt the gold,

  366. to plate this statue,

  367. and also to kiln the bricks

  368. that would have been used

  369. in fashioning the pedestal

  370. and the guts of the image itself.

  371. temperatures in kilns

  372. such as these

  373. could reach anywhere

  374. between 1200 and 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.

  375. Although it's not recorded,

  376. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  377. did not bow down to the image.

  378. They were present at the ceremony.

  379. They obeyed as far as they could.

  380. This has been the standout feature

  381. of their time in Babylon.

  382. We see this blend of integrity

  383. and conviction

  384. that is mixed and blended

  385. with compliance.

  386. We see their courage

  387. that's mixed with submission.

  388. We see their faith

  389. that's mixed with adherence.

  390. But here they are again.

  391. They've been summoned

  392. to the plain of Dura.

  393. They come,

  394. although I'm sure

  395. they recognized it was risky.

  396. No doubt they're aware

  397. of the king's ego

  398. and his intent

  399. to single out the dissenters

  400. and call attention

  401. to worship to him.

  402. But they come

  403. to the command

  404. in obedience

  405. and submission

  406. to their authority.

  407. But here now

  408. they're faced with a decision.

  409. Here now they're at a crossroads.

  410. A crossroads

  411. of compliance

  412. and submission to God

  413. versus submission

  414. to the king.

  415. And we find themselves

  416. unable to bow

  417. before the image,

  418. understanding

  419. its implications.

  420. Verse 8 says,

  421. Therefore,

  422. at that time

  423. certain Chaldeans

  424. came forward

  425. and maliciously

  426. accused the Jews.

  427. They declared

  428. to the king,

  429. Nebuchadnezzar,

  430. O king,

  431. live forever.

  432. You, O king,

  433. have made a decree

  434. that every man

  435. who hears the sound

  436. of the horn,

  437. pipe,

  438. lyre,

  439. trigon,

  440. harp,

  441. bagpipe,

  442. and every kind of music

  443. shall fall down

  444. and worship

  445. the golden image.

  446. And whoever

  447. does not fall down

  448. and worship

  449. shall be cast

  450. into a burning,

  451. fiery furnace.

  452. There are certain Jews

  453. whom you have appointed

  454. over the affairs

  455. of the province

  456. of Babylon,

  457. Shadrach,

  458. Meshach,

  459. and Abednego.

  460. These men,

  461. O king,

  462. pay no attention

  463. to you.

  464. They do not serve

  465. your gods

  466. or worship

  467. the golden image

  468. that you have set up.

  469. As a side note,

  470. I think it's important

  471. for us to understand

  472. that Daniel

  473. is not present

  474. in this ceremony.

  475. And all along

  476. as we've been reading

  477. through the book

  478. of Daniel,

  479. we've come to see

  480. and appreciate

  481. that Daniel stood

  482. as a figure

  483. that was full

  484. of conviction

  485. and I think

  486. helped to carry

  487. these young men

  488. in doing what was right.

  489. But here,

  490. now these men

  491. stand alone.

  492. The conviction

  493. and worship

  494. and devotion

  495. for their God

  496. is coming through

  497. in their heart

  498. of affection for God

  499. and loyalty to Him.

  500. But the Chaldeans

  501. take notice.

  502. It would have been obvious,

  503. of course,

  504. an act of disobedience.

  505. But you also get

  506. the sense

  507. that these Chaldeans

  508. were on the lookout

  509. because if any of you

  510. have looked at any pictures

  511. of anyone

  512. in Middle Eastern culture

  513. who is bowing down,

  514. you recognize

  515. that their face

  516. is often right

  517. to the ground.

  518. And so there is

  519. zero or very little,

  520. if any,

  521. view of their surroundings

  522. and often eyes closed.

  523. But somehow,

  524. these Chaldeans

  525. are taking notice.

  526. They have a lookout.

  527. It's a convenient observation.

  528. And of course,

  529. they approach the king

  530. to maliciously accuse

  531. these Jews.

  532. This word literally,

  533. or this phrase literally,

  534. means

  535. to eat the pieces of.

  536. They want to devour them

  537. piece by piece.

  538. They want to tear them

  539. to pieces.

  540. Of course,

  541. that is familiar as well

  542. as we understand

  543. that Satan

  544. is not only called

  545. the accuser

  546. and these men

  547. are maliciously

  548. accusing these Jews.

  549. We also understand

  550. that Satan

  551. is the roaring lion

  552. who is seeking

  553. whom he may devour.

  554. These Chaldeans

  555. acting as agents

  556. of the enemy.

  557. They begin

  558. with a formal greeting,

  559. O king,

  560. live forever.

  561. And then they continue

  562. by recounting

  563. the command

  564. that the king has given

  565. as if he didn't know.

  566. But then comes the hook.

  567. There are certain Jews

  568. whom you have appointed

  569. over the affairs

  570. of the province of Babylon.

  571. They pay no attention

  572. to you.

  573. They do not serve

  574. your gods

  575. or worship

  576. the image

  577. that you have set up.

  578. This, of course,

  579. is an attempt

  580. to emphasize

  581. every single point

  582. of suspicion

  583. that they could identify.

  584. They're Jews,

  585. meaning

  586. they're not from here,

  587. Nebuchadnezzar.

  588. They have no allegiance

  589. to Babylon,

  590. Nebuchadnezzar.

  591. They're not on the home team,

  592. as it were.

  593. Watch out.

  594. They pay no attention

  595. to you.

  596. Also,

  597. an attempt

  598. to discredit

  599. their service

  600. that has been

  601. consistent

  602. and faithful

  603. up to this point.

  604. They do not serve

  605. your gods.

  606. And this will be important

  607. as we continue

  608. to work our way

  609. through the text

  610. that service

  611. and worship

  612. are interchangeable

  613. in the scriptures.

  614. That when worship

  615. is happening,

  616. service is also

  617. taking place.

  618. And we see that here

  619. in our text.

  620. They do not serve

  621. your gods

  622. or worship

  623. the image.

  624. Exclusive worship

  625. of God

  626. was allowed

  627. during Nebuchadnezzar's reign,

  628. permitted by him,

  629. but here,

  630. now it's twisted

  631. against these young men.

  632. They do not worship

  633. your image.

  634. Now,

  635. this gets extremely personal.

  636. This is your image,

  637. Nebuchadnezzar.

  638. They don't recognize you

  639. as supreme.

  640. They don't acknowledge

  641. your authority.

  642. They don't pay

  643. any allegiance

  644. to your kingdom,

  645. Nebuchadnezzar.

  646. Watch out for these guys.

  647. It is important to notice

  648. that worship and service,

  649. as I have said,

  650. are interchangeable.

  651. We see that

  652. in the next several verses.

  653. We saw that in verse 12.

  654. We'll see it again

  655. in verse 14

  656. where Nebuchadnezzar

  657. challenges the young men,

  658. is it true

  659. that you do not serve

  660. my gods

  661. or worship

  662. the golden image

  663. I've set up?

  664. And then in verse 17,

  665. the young men say,

  666. our God

  667. whom we serve

  668. is able to deliver.

  669. And then finally,

  670. in verse 18,

  671. we will not serve

  672. your gods

  673. or worship

  674. the golden image

  675. that you have set up.

  676. We will not serve you.

  677. We will not worship you.

  678. We will not pay

  679. our allegiance to you

  680. because God alone

  681. is worthy.

  682. In verses 13 to 15,

  683. we find Nebuchadnezzar

  684. giving them another opportunity,

  685. another chance,

  686. as it were.

  687. He brings Shadrach,

  688. Meshach,

  689. and Abednego

  690. before him.

  691. He recites the command.

  692. He gives them a chance

  693. when the music plays

  694. to fall down

  695. and show their allegiance.

  696. And then Nebuchadnezzar

  697. adds an important element

  698. at the end of verse 15.

  699. Notice,

  700. And who is the God

  701. who will deliver you

  702. out of my hands?

  703. This has always been

  704. a test of power.

  705. Now we're finally getting

  706. to the crux

  707. of what Nebuchadnezzar

  708. is after.

  709. He wants worship

  710. as if he were God.

  711. He wants to establish himself

  712. as the Supreme One.

  713. It's a test of allegiance,

  714. a test of worship.

  715. And Nebuchadnezzar,

  716. by his own mouth,

  717. demonstrates what is central

  718. to this ceremony.

  719. Worship this image.

  720. And no God

  721. can challenge my power.

  722. These three young men

  723. stand their ground.

  724. They serve as an example

  725. to us

  726. of loyalty to Christ

  727. and true worship

  728. that should be true

  729. of every single one of us

  730. who claim

  731. to be followers of Jesus.

  732. We come in verses

  733. 16 to 18.

  734. We see Shadrach, Meshach,

  735. and Abednego's devotion.

  736. Nebuchadnezzar

  737. has issued a command.

  738. Now Shadrach, Meshach,

  739. and Abednego

  740. demonstrate their

  741. single-minded devotion

  742. to God.

  743. Notice

  744. in verse 16.

  745. Shadrach, Meshach,

  746. and Abednego

  747. answered and said

  748. to the king,

  749. O Nebuchadnezzar,

  750. we have no need

  751. to answer you

  752. in this matter.

  753. If this be so,

  754. our God,

  755. whom we serve,

  756. is able to deliver us

  757. from the burning

  758. fiery furnace.

  759. And he will deliver us

  760. out of your hand,

  761. O king.

  762. But if not,

  763. be it known to you,

  764. O king,

  765. that we will not

  766. serve your gods

  767. or worship

  768. the golden image

  769. that you have set up.

  770. In these few verses,

  771. we find this confident,

  772. bold,

  773. clear,

  774. respectful allegiance

  775. to the one true God.

  776. This is, of course,

  777. intensely personal

  778. for them as well.

  779. Notice in verse 17.

  780. If this be so,

  781. our God,

  782. whom we serve,

  783. is able to deliver us.

  784. He's not just

  785. the God of Abraham,

  786. Isaac, and Jacob.

  787. He's not just

  788. the God of heaven.

  789. He's not just

  790. the God of our forefathers.

  791. He is our God.

  792. He belongs to us.

  793. And we will worship him

  794. as the only

  795. true God.

  796. And this statement,

  797. we have no need

  798. to answer you

  799. in this matter,

  800. is not a statement

  801. of defiance,

  802. but a statement

  803. and a testimony

  804. to their consistent

  805. devotion to God

  806. that has been true

  807. from the very beginning.

  808. You have known us,

  809. Nebuchadnezzar,

  810. from the beginning.

  811. We have never

  812. compromised

  813. the things

  814. that we believed in.

  815. We have remained

  816. true to our God

  817. who has never

  818. abandoned us.

  819. Our lives have remained

  820. a faithful witness

  821. to our true devotion

  822. to him.

  823. Nothing's going to

  824. change that.

  825. Not being stripped away

  826. from our country.

  827. Not becoming slaves

  828. in this new empire.

  829. Not losing our family

  830. and friends.

  831. Not for the sake

  832. of privilege

  833. and position.

  834. Not for fear

  835. of reputation.

  836. and not in the face

  837. of death.

  838. We will remain

  839. true to the one

  840. true God.

  841. He is not distant.

  842. He's not abandoned us.

  843. He's not diminished

  844. in power

  845. or failed to answer us

  846. when we pray.

  847. He is present.

  848. He is active.

  849. And he is able

  850. to save.

  851. Our hope

  852. is in him.

  853. Even if he doesn't save,

  854. we will still

  855. not serve your God

  856. or worship

  857. this image.

  858. We must draw the line.

  859. We must remain true

  860. to our allegiance

  861. to our God.

  862. They do this

  863. because they know

  864. the word of God.

  865. They do this

  866. because they know

  867. the power of God.

  868. They do this

  869. because they are

  870. settled

  871. in the results

  872. that God

  873. will bring.

  874. Next week,

  875. we're going to

  876. finish the story.

  877. And we're going to

  878. see how their commitment

  879. to worship

  880. to God,

  881. the God who could

  882. save them

  883. from the fire,

  884. does save

  885. in his presence.

  886. He sends his presence

  887. to carry them

  888. through the fire.

  889. But each one of us

  890. in this room

  891. are confronted

  892. with the kind

  893. of struggle,

  894. the kind of decision

  895. that we see

  896. happening

  897. in our passage.

  898. We're confronted

  899. with this

  900. nearly every day.

  901. I'm reminded

  902. of Joshua

  903. at the end

  904. of his life

  905. who says

  906. in Joshua

  907. 24, 15,

  908. he says,

  909. choose this day

  910. whom you will serve.

  911. That's our word again.

  912. But as for me

  913. and my house,

  914. we will serve

  915. the Lord.

  916. There is a decision

  917. that we need to make.

  918. Who is the object

  919. of your affection?

  920. Who is the center

  921. of your worship?

  922. And you may

  923. fill in the blank

  924. with who

  925. is the one

  926. that you serve?

  927. Like Nebuchadnezzar,

  928. I find my own

  929. heart demanding

  930. worship.

  931. Not the kind

  932. of worship

  933. that I set up

  934. an image

  935. of myself

  936. and ask people

  937. to bow down,

  938. but the kind

  939. of worship

  940. where I want

  941. to be at the

  942. center of attention.

  943. You find the pole,

  944. that same pole

  945. on your own heart?

  946. You want to be

  947. the center of attention?

  948. You want to be

  949. the object of praise?

  950. You want the

  951. commendation,

  952. the recognition?

  953. You want the

  954. attaboy?

  955. You want the pat

  956. on the back?

  957. You want people

  958. to say,

  959. wow,

  960. what a great job

  961. you're doing?

  962. What a great person

  963. you are?

  964. We want the kind

  965. of worship

  966. that Nebuchadnezzar

  967. craved.

  968. We want loyalty

  969. to us.

  970. We want the world

  971. to revolve

  972. around our desires

  973. and our interests.

  974. While we may not

  975. be as bold

  976. as Nebuchadnezzar

  977. to demand

  978. that people

  979. worship us,

  980. remember that worship

  981. and service

  982. go hand in hand

  983. and service

  984. is inherent

  985. in us.

  986. That's why Jesus

  987. in confronting

  988. the disciples,

  989. remember the argument

  990. that they're having

  991. about who is first?

  992. Jesus has to

  993. confront them

  994. in Mark chapter 9

    Mark 9:35

  995. verse 35.

  996. He says,

  997. He sat down,

  998. called His twelve

  999. and said to them,

  1000. If anyone desires

  1001. to be first,

  1002. he shall be last

  1003. and of all

  1004. and servant

  1005. of all.

  1006. Like Nebuchadnezzar,

  1007. we put ourselves

  1008. in the center.

  1009. Like Nebuchadnezzar,

  1010. we want the world

  1011. to serve us.

  1012. Jesus, of course,

  1013. came to change

  1014. all of that.

  1015. In Mark 10, 45,

  1016. He came not

  1017. to be served,

  1018. but to serve

1019. and to give His life

  1020. a ransom for many.

  1021. He came to unlock

  1022. the door

  1023. of true service

  1024. and worship

  1025. to God

  1026. that gets me

  1027. out of the way

  1028. and puts Him

  1029. at the center.

  1030. We are all like

  1031. Nebuchadnezzar

  1032. in our heart.

  1033. We do whatever

  1034. is in our power

  1035. to force the issue,

  1036. to get our way,

  1037. to demand our rights,

  1038. to make ourselves known.

  1039. We want to

  1040. intimidate.

  1041. We want to manipulate.

  1042. We want everyone

  1043. to bow down

  1044. and serve us.

  1045. We would never

1046. put it in those terms,

  1047. but that's exactly

  1048. what's happening.

  1049. Of course,

  1050. none of this

1051. was the way of Christ

  1052. who sets the example

  1053. for us.

1054. And I would encourage you

1055. just in our closing moments

  1056. to open up

  1057. to Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1058. I want to read

  1059. through this

  1060. with a new lens

  1061. and I want you

1062. to be able to see

  1063. how self-service

  1064. is in us.

  1065. It must be rooted

  1066. out of us

1067. and that will only happen

  1068. as we make Jesus

  1069. the center

  1070. of our affection.

  1071. Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

1072. Let me just read this for us.

  1073. It says,

1074. So if there is any

  1075. encouragement in Christ,

  1076. any comfort from love,

  1077. any participation

  1078. in the Spirit,

  1079. any affection

  1080. and sympathy,

  1081. complete my joy

1082. by being of the same mind,

  1083. have the same love,

  1084. being in full accord

  1085. and of one mind.

  1086. Do nothing

  1087. from selfish ambition

  1088. or conceit,

  1089. conceit,

  1090. but in humility

  1091. count others

  1092. more significant

  1093. than yourselves.

  1094. Now why does Paul

  1095. have to say that?

1096. Because it is in us.

1097. We want what we want

  1098. and we want everyone

1099. to want the same things

  1100. that we want.

  1101. But the instruction

  1102. goes on,

  1103. let each of you

  1104. look out

1105. not only to his own interest

1106. but also to the interest

  1107. of others.

  1108. Why?

  1109. Because of Christ.

  1110. In verse 5,

  1111. have this mind

  1112. found among yourselves,

  1113. which is yours

  1114. in Christ Jesus,

  1115. who though he was

1116. in the form of God,

  1117. did not count equality

  1118. with God a thing

  1119. to be grasped,

  1120. but he emptied himself,

  1121. taking the form

  1122. of a servant,

1123. being born in the likeness

  1124. of men,

  1125. and being found

  1126. in human form,

  1127. he humbled himself

  1128. by becoming obedient

1129. to the point of death,

1130. even death on a cross.

  1131. Therefore God

  1132. has highly exalted him

  1133. and bestowed on him

  1134. the name that is

  1135. above every name,

1136. said the name of Jesus.

  1137. Every knee should bow

  1138. in heaven,

  1139. on earth,

  1140. and under the earth,

  1141. and every tongue

  1142. will confess

  1143. that Jesus Christ

  1144. is Lord

  1145. to the glory

  1146. of God the Father.

  1147. Allow your heart

  1148. to follow the lead

  1149. of your Savior.

  1150. Allow your heart

  1151. to bend

  1152. and flex

  1153. and lay down

  1154. and abandon

  1155. self-interest

  1156. for the sake

  1157. of love

  1158. to Christ.

  1159. Stop serving

  1160. yourself

  1161. and start

  1162. serving him.

  1163. And trust

  1164. that in that process

  1165. that God

  1166. will

  1167. allow you

  1168. to see the fruit

  1169. of that kind

  1170. of life.

  1171. The kind of fruit

  1172. where God himself

  1173. is the one

  1174. who is meeting

  1175. needs

  1176. and strengthening

  1177. your life

  1178. and leading you

  1179. to fruitfulness.

1180. At the end of the day,

1181. at the end of the age,

  1182. because of Christ's

  1183. example

  1184. of humility,

  1185. we're going to

  1186. enjoy

  1187. and remember

  1188. what Christ

  1189. has accomplished

  1190. for us

  1191. through his death,

  1192. his body,

  1193. his blood.

  1194. He's made a way

  1195. for us

  1196. to enjoy

  1197. this kind

  1198. of life.

  1199. self-abandonment

  1200. for the sake

  1201. of love

  1202. and worship

  1203. to God.

  1204. As I pray,

  1205. I want to encourage

  1206. the men

  1207. to come forward

  1208. and we'll remember

  1209. the body

  1210. and blood

  1211. of Christ

  1212. through the elements.

  1213. Father,

  1214. thank you

  1215. for the example

  1216. that you've set

  1217. in your son,

  1218. Jesus.

  1219. And Lord,

  1220. thank you

  1221. that every knee

  1222. will bow

  1223. and every tongue

  1224. will confess

  1225. that you're Lord,

  1226. that you will get

  1227. the praise

  1228. that you deserve.

  1229. but it will come

  1230. in the time

  1231. that's been ordained

  1232. by the Father.

  1233. So Lord,

  1234. I pray that you'd

  1235. help us to follow

  1236. in your steps.

  1237. And Lord,

  1238. as we take

  1239. the elements

  1240. this morning

  1241. that we would

  1242. remember

  1243. that you are

  1244. faithful

  1245. and dependable,

  1246. that as Christ

  1247. submitted his will

  1248. to the Father

  1249. and got to enjoy

  1250. the benefits

  1251. of that obedience,

  1252. we too

  1253. can enjoy

  1254. the benefits

  1255. of trust

  1256. in you

  1257. and service

  1258. of you.

  1259. May you be

  1260. pleased

  1261. through our time

  1262. together.

  1263. In Jesus' name,

  1264. Amen.

  1265. Amen.
