  1. Good morning, Maranatha Baptist Church.

  2. Good morning.

  3. It is a privilege to worship with you and to have been worshiping now for two months.

  4. ! If we haven't met yet, my name is Luke Fawcett.

  5. My wife is Jana, and I guess it's your left back.

  6. So talk to her and us after the service.

  7. If we haven't met you guys, we'd love to do that.

  8. I just graduated from Cedarville just literally three months ago

  9. with my undergrad and my master's in Bible

  10. and got the privilege to meet Andrew in October

  11. and then come on as a pastoral intern just a couple months ago.

  12. I've been serving in that capacity.

  13. This morning we'll be continuing our study in Daniel chapter 3,

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  14. focusing on verses 19 to 30.

  15. So if you have your Bibles, you can open to Daniel chapter 3, verses 19 to 30.

    Daniel 3:19–30

  16. If you're using a Bible in the pew, that's page 740.

  17. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

  18. Maybe you'd choose super strength or flying,

  19. maybe invisibility or reading people's minds,

  20. which is kind of weird.

  21. I remember as a young boy being awed by Spider-Man.

  22. I thought he was the coolest thing.

  23. I had the Spider-Man sneakers that lit up,

  24. and I wore the costume, his suit on Halloween.

  25. When I put that suit on, I felt absolutely invincible,

  26. like I could do anything.

  27. Parents, you know what this is like

  28. when your child has a little too much courage for their own good?

  29. That was me.

  30. We live in an age of superheroism.

  31. Just consider the phenomenon of the Marvel Universe.

  32. Many of you no doubt have watched these movies.

  33. In fact, all three movies in the Avengers trilogy

  34. are ranked in the top 10 highest grossing films in modern history.

  35. They've made over $6 billion.

  36. It's undeniable that we live in a culture that glorifies superheroes.

  37. But what does a superhero do for us?

  38. Why are we so fascinated by their powers and their mission?

  39. I think we can't get enough of superheroes

  40. because we know that we need saving.

  41. We know deep down that there's something wrong in our lives.

  42. The curse has had its way in different ways,

  43. and we long for deliverance.

  44. We want someone to take away the difficulties that we face,

  45. the car needing constant repair,

  46. the relational tensions that we feel,

  47. the frustrations at our workplace,

  48. the life-altering decisions,

  49. the shape of our body,

  50. the friendships that disappoint,

  51. and on and on it goes.

  52. Each of us longs for deliverance from something.

  53. We long for deliverance from something.

  54. So what is that for you?

  55. What do you long for deliverance from?

  56. See, the truth is that we will serve

  57. whatever we believe will save us.

  58. We will serve whatever we believe will save us,

  59. whatever delivers us from the thing that we fear.

  60. The message this morning is titled

  61. that God alone can save.

  62. God alone is our deliverer.

  63. It functions something like a part two

  64. to what Andrew preached last week as part one.

  65. Part one focused on God's,

  66. or God alone is worthy of worship.

  67. The golden image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up

  68. for all the peoples and nations and languages

  69. to bow down to

  70. set the stage for three Hebrew boys

  71. who refuse him

  72. and bring about a conflict.

  73. And it's a conflict not primarily

  74. between the three Hebrews and Nebuchadnezzar.

  75. It's actually a conflict between Nebuchadnezzar

  76. and the God of heaven.

  77. This is a showdown of sovereigns.

  78. Who is gonna come out on top?

  79. Who is in power?

  80. Who is in control?

  81. And verse 15 sets the stage for our text.

  82. Nebuchadnezzar asked in chapter three, verse 15,

  83. who is the God who will deliver you out of my hands?

  84. Who is the God who will deliver you out of my hands?

  85. We'll see that the singular message of chapter three,

  86. because it really is one message for one chapter,

  87. is that God alone deserves worship

  88. because God alone can save.

  89. God alone deserves worship

  90. because God alone is our deliverer.

  91. So the main idea for this morning

  92. is serve God who alone can save.

  93. Serve God who alone can save.

  94. Now it's important to note up front

  95. before we get into our passage

  96. that each point of this message

  97. is marked in our text with the transition word then.

  98. So you can see this in verse 19,

  99. verse 24, and verse 26.

  100. And Daniel writes this in a way

  101. that sets up three scenes for us,

  102. three things that make us ask the question,

  103. what happens next?

  104. As the narrative kind of twists and turns,

  105. as Nebuchadnezzar rises and falls,

  106. Shadrach are in and out of the fire,

  107. we're asking the question,

  108. what is going to happen?

  109. So point number one,

  110. Nebuchadnezzar commands the Hebrews' death.

  111. Nebuchadnezzar commands the Hebrews' death.

  112. Follow along with me in verse 19 to verse 23.

  113. Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury,

  114. and the expression of his face

  115. was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  116. He ordered the furnace heated

  117. seven times more than it was usually heated.

  118. He ordered some of the mighty men of his army

  119. to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  120. and to cast them into the burning, fiery furnace.

  121. Then these men were bound in their cloaks,

  122. their tunics, their hats, and their other garments,

  123. and they were thrown into the burning, fiery furnace.

  124. Because the king's order was urgent

  125. and the furnace overheated,

  126. the flame of the fire killed those men

  127. who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  128. And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,

  129. fell bound into the burning, fiery furnace.

  130. After Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  131. are given a second chance to recant

  132. and to worship this golden image,

  133. the king's rage is fuming.

  134. Notice the way it's described, though.

  135. It says Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury,

  136. and the expression of his face was changed.

  137. We know from previous narratives

  138. that this is the typical way that Nebuchadnezzar responds

  139. when he doesn't get what he wants.

  140. Look back to chapter two, verse 12.

  141. Because of this,

  142. that is the Chaldean's inability to tell him his dream,

  143. the king was angry and very furious,

  144. and he commanded that all the wise men of Babylon

  145. be destroyed.

  146. Or just a few verses ago in chapter three, verse 13,

  147. that Nebuchadnezzar, in a furious rage,

  148. commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought.

  149. He's done trying to reason with these Hebrews.

  150. Nebuchadnezzar will not tolerate rebellion,

  151. and his face starts to show what's in his heart.

  152. He embodies the kind of worldly anger

  153. that James 4, 2 talks about,

  154. that we desire and we do not have,

  155. and so we murder.

  156. Parents, maybe you've heard your child say

  157. that you have the face,

  158. or that glare.

  159. It's the look that you give when your child rebels,

  160. and they know that if they don't do something,

  161. there's gonna be consequences.

  162. Literally, the expression of your face changes.

  163. The picture here actually reminds me

  164. of something like the figure from,

  165. or the figure anger from Inside Out.

  166. Maybe some of you guys have watched this movie.

  167. It's directed from a young girl's life,

  168. and it's through her emotions

  169. that we actually see the movie play out,

  170. anger being one of them.

  171. He's personified as this big, bright,

  172. no-nonsense, stubby emotion

  173. that always gets grumpy,

  174. and he's just in for a fight.

  175. And there's one scene where Riley, the girl,

  176. comes home after a rough day of work

  177. and starts to get into it with her dad,

  178. and things start to heat up.

  179. Anger, you can literally see him

  180. clenching his fists,

  181. and his teeth start to grit,

  182. and his jaw gets harder,

  183. and the other emotions are like

  184. trying to calm him down

  185. because he's gonna absolutely lose it.

  186. But finally, he just explodes,

  187. and fire comes out of his head,

  188. and he takes control of the situation.

  189. He's had it.

  190. Like anger, Nebuchadnezzar in our story

  191. is trying to take control of the situation

  192. through his anger.

  193. He's gonna show who's in charge.

  194. He's gonna show whose will is final.

  195. And first, we notice that he orders the furnace

  196. to be heated seven times more than it was.

  197. Now, at face value,

  198. this just seems like Nebuchadnezzar

  199. is just heating up the furnace, right?

  200. He wants it to be hotter.

  201. But in Scripture,

  202. seven has a particular significance as a number.

  203. It carries the idea of completion or fulfillment.

  204. You might remember that God rested

  205. on the seventh day of creation,

  206. marking its completion.

  207. Or Elisha telling Naaman

  208. that he had to go wash in the Jordan

  209. seven times in order to be completely healed.

  210. Or Joshua and the Israelites

  211. going around Jericho for seven days

  212. and on the seventh time,

  213. going around seven times,

  214. marking the completion of its destruction.

  215. This symbolic significance

  216. is similar to how the number three

  217. kind of functions in English.

  218. Students, if you've taken speech or rhetoric,

  219. you know that generally,

  220. in a persuasive argument,

  221. you have to have three points.

  222. Why is that?

  223. It's just because it's a number of completion.

  224. It marks something that's memorable

  225. and substantial.

  226. So to heat up the furnace seven times hotter

  227. is not just to make it hot,

  228. but to make it as hot as possible.

  229. It does not matter

  230. whether or not it's seven times

  231. or 70 times.

  232. Nebuchadnezzar wants to incinerate these men.

  233. But why does he increase the heat at all?

  234. Think about this for a moment.

  235. The furnace was literally built

  236. to kill anyone

  237. that didn't do what Nebuchadnezzar said.

  238. He could have just thrown them into the furnace

  239. and they would have died.

  240. That's pretty simple.

  241. But I think here's why.

  242. Anger is power.

  243. Anger is power.

  244. We know this is true in our own lives.

  245. When we raise our voice.

  246. When we speak brutal,

  247. cutting, divisive words.

  248. When we use our hands to hurt people.

  249. When we turn away in our bodies.

  250. It communicates that I'll show you

  251. how much I can hurt,

  252. manipulate, and control you.

  253. That's the heart of sinful anger.

  254. And Nebuchadnezzar's actions

  255. are revealing his heart.

  256. That he is completely opposed

  257. not only to the Hebrews,

  258. but also to their God.

  259. And we know from previous chapters

  260. that Nebuchadnezzar

  261. is basically opposed to God.

  262. It may not seem as messy right now,

  263. but it's still there.

  264. In chapter one,

  265. he took the temple vessels

  266. and defiled them

  267. by taking them into

  268. his own house of worship.

  269. And as the story progresses,

  270. he's happy if God helps him.

  271. Right?

  272. He's happy if God gives him

  273. wise, capable counselors.

  274. Or if God reveals his dreams

  275. that are troubling him.

  276. And we might even be fooled

  277. into thinking that

  278. Nebuchadnezzar at this point

  279. believes based on his blessing

  280. from chapter two.

  281. But faith or acceptance

  282. is easy

  283. when God is working for me.

  284. When God serves me.

  285. What about when God

  286. is opposed to what I'm doing?

  287. What about when God's commands

  288. oppose my self-centered desires

  289. and demands?

  290. You see, faith is not tested

  291. through what God offers me.

  292. Who wouldn't want eternal life?

  293. Who would not want joy and peace?

  294. Faith is not tested

  295. through what God offers me,

  296. but through what I am willing

  297. to submit to him.

  298. If God doesn't own

  299. every area of my life,

  300. then I have not surrendered to him

  301. as Lord in that way.

  302. And I am still in the center.

  303. And anger is often the way

  304. that reveals and exposes

  305. who is at the center of our lives.

  306. The second way that Nebuchadnezzar

  307. tries to show his power

  308. is by ordering his personal guards

  309. to bind and cast Shadrach, Meshach,

  310. and Abednego into the furnace.

  311. He orders the men to be thrown in.

  312. Even though the Hebrews

  313. have been compliant

  314. and peaceful up to this point,

  315. Nebuchadnezzar will not stand it.

  316. He's going to treat them as rebels.

  317. They've been faithful wise men,

  318. but he treats them as criminals.

  319. And the word that's actually

  320. translated here in verse 20,

  321. for mighty men,

  322. he ordered some of the mighty men

  323. of his army to bind them.

  324. This word is also translated elsewhere

  325. as most mighty men

  326. in the KJV

  327. or strongest soldiers in the NIV.

  328. And I actually think the NASB,

  329. the New American Standard Version,

  330. seems to render it best

  331. as valiant warriors.

  332. This is actually significant

  333. because it's the same word

  334. that is used to describe

  335. David's best soldiers.

  336. King David, if you remember,

  337. had soldiers like Abishai,

  338. who killed 300 men in a day.

  339. Or Benaiah,

  340. who went into a snowy pit

  341. to kill a lion.

  342. These, in other words,

  343. are the best,

  344. the SEAL Team 6

  345. of Nebuchadnezzar's army.

  346. So when Nebuchadnezzar

  347. commands his valiant warriors

  348. to bind and throw these men

  349. into the fiery furnace,

  350. he's making a statement.

  351. He's saying that I am on top.

  352. He's doing everything he can

  353. to demonstrate to the officials

  354. and the nations

  355. that he is stronger

  356. than them and their God.

  357. In fact, he's so aggressive

  358. and demanding

  359. that the soldiers

  360. who take them into the fire

  361. die at the hands of the fire.

  362. Notice also the way

  363. that Daniel describes them

  364. being thrown in here.

  365. Here the verb tense shifts

  366. in verse 21

  367. from active to passive.

  368. Then these men

  369. were bound.

  370. And later,

  371. they were thrown in.

  372. Or also in verse 23.

  373. And these three men,

  374. Shadrach, Meshach,

  375. and Abednego,

  376. fell bound

  377. into the burning,

  378. fiery furnace.

  379. These two verses

  380. communicate the same idea.

  381. Shadrach, Meshach,

  382. and Abednego

  383. had no power

  384. to save themselves.

  385. They were at the hands,

  386. they were at the mercy

  387. of Nebuchadnezzar.

  388. And they are ready

  389. to die for their faith.

  390. It's important to note

  391. that though they are confident

  392. that God can save them,

  393. they don't know

  394. if he will.

  395. Look back at verse 17.

  396. They say,

  397. If this be so,

  398. our God,

  399. whom we serve,

  400. is able to deliver us

  401. from the burning,

  402. fiery furnace,

  403. and he will deliver us

  404. out of your hand,

  405. O King.

  406. But if not.

  407. But if not.

  408. This is their

  409. but if not moment.

  410. Can you think about

  411. the gravity of this

  412. in your own life?

  413. Lord, I believe

  414. that you can heal me

  415. of this sickness,

  416. but if not.

  417. God, you can resolve

  418. the financial crisis

  419. I'm in right now,

  420. but if not.

  421. Father, you're able

  422. to save my wandering child

  423. from their sin,

  424. but if not.

  425. Jesus, you can save

  426. my marriage

  427. from the ruin

  428. that I made it,

  429. but if not.

  430. Holy Spirit,

  431. you can remove

  432. the darkness

  433. of my grief

  434. and depression

  435. and restore to me

  436. the joy of salvation.

  437. But if not.

  438. What happens

  439. if God chooses

  440. not to save

  441. Shadrach, Meshach,

  442. and Abednego?

  443. What happens

  444. if God chooses

  445. not to deliver you

  446. in this moment?

  447. For these men,

  448. the point was not

  449. their deliverance.

  450. The point was

  451. whether or not

  452. their lives

  453. demonstrated

  454. that God alone

  455. was worthy

  456. of worship.

  457. Listen to the rest

  458. of their statement.

  459. But if not,

  460. verse 18,

  461. be it known

  462. to you,

  463. O king,

  464. that we will not

  465. serve your gods

  466. or worship

  467. the golden image

  468. that you have set up.

  469. The point was

  470. making known

  471. to the world,

  472. these nations

  473. and officials

  474. and this king,

  475. that the God

  476. in heaven

  477. is deserving

  478. of their worship

  479. and their very

  480. lives.

  481. And there's a danger

  482. in a sermon like this

  483. on deliverance.

  484. We can connect

  485. faith and obedience

  486. with God's deliverance

  487. from the fire

  488. in such a way

  489. that salvation

  490. becomes about prosperity

  491. and longevity

  492. and health

  493. and not about

  494. God's glory.

  495. Let me say that again.

  496. We can connect

  497. faith and obedience

  498. with God's deliverance

  499. from the fire

  500. in such a way

  501. that we look

  502. at salvation

  503. as prosperity

  504. and health

  505. and deliverance

  506. in that way

  507. and not about

  508. God's glory.

  509. If you're faithful,

  510. God will deliver you

  511. from X.

  512. That's the thing

  513. that we could think about.

  514. If we're not careful,

  515. we can view Shadrach,

  516. Meshach,

  517. and Abednego

  518. as a type for us

  519. of what God will do

  520. if his people

  521. are faithful.

  522. The philosophy

  523. might go something

  524. like this.

  525. If you raise

  526. your children right,

  527. they'll always

  528. follow after God.

  529. But what if they aren't?

  530. If you're giving faithfully,

  531. you'll be good financially.

  532. But what if you aren't?

  533. If you work hard,

  534. you'll accomplish

  535. whatever you want.

  536. But what if you don't?

  537. You see,

  538. my point here

  539. is not to discourage

  540. giving faithfully

  541. or raising your children

  542. in the Lord

  543. or working hard.

  544. I think that those

  545. are good,

  546. godly things

  547. that God has called

  548. all of us

  549. as his people to.

  550. And there are scriptures

  551. that we could no doubt

  552. point to

  553. and demonstrate

  554. that this is the way

  555. that it normally works

  556. in God's world.

  557. that faithfulness

  558. often produces

  559. fruitfulness.

  560. But underneath

  561. our efforts

  562. stands the sovereign

  563. purposes of God

  564. and his will

  565. for his own glory.

  566. It's actually

  567. this truth

  568. that is more

  569. of a comfort to us

  570. than setting our hope

  571. on any kind of outcome

  572. that we could achieve.

  573. Because if our lives

  574. are about his glory,

  575. then deliverance

  576. isn't our ultimate hope

  577. in this world.

  578. his glory is.

  579. Because we have set

  580. our hope

  581. that he will deliver us

  582. in the next.

  583. So he may

  584. or he may not save

  585. our kids.

  586. He may restore us

  587. from this financial difficulty

  588. or he may leave us

  589. in the same condition.

  590. either way,

  591. God really is working

  592. all things

  593. for our good

  594. and his glory.

  595. That's where faith

  596. comes in.

  597. It gives us

  598. sight

  599. beyond what we can see

  600. that God is doing

  601. because we know

  602. that he is up

  603. to good for us.

  604. In these moments

  605. we learn to pray

  606. like Jesus

  607. who was tempted

  608. and tried

  609. in every respect

  610. as we are.

  611. Maybe you remember this,

  612. how he was distressed

  613. and he was troubled

  614. in the garden

  615. of Gethsemane.

  616. He was abandoned

  617. by all of his followers.

  618. He was all alone,

  619. betrayed

  620. by one of his own.

  621. In his hardest moment

  622. he prayed like this.

  623. Abba, Father,

  624. all things are possible

  625. for you.

  626. Remove his cup

  627. from me.

  628. But if not,

  629. or yet,

  630. not what I will

  631. but what you will.

  632. Jesus said that prayer

  633. over and over

  634. and over

  635. three separate times

  636. until he was ready

  637. to receive

  638. God's will.

  639. That is why

  640. it's a good idea

  641. I think for us

  642. to pray habitually

  643. how Jesus taught

  644. his disciples to pray.

  645. Our Father

  646. who art in heaven,

  647. hallowed be thy name.

  648. Thy kingdom come,

  649. thy will be done

  650. on earth

  651. as it is in heaven.

  652. In our story,

  653. God in his mercy

  654. does in fact

  655. rescue the Hebrews.

  656. And he demonstrates

  657. his power

  658. over Nebuchadnezzar.

  659. His urgency

  660. to destroy them

  661. turns to urgency

  662. to see them.

  663. Follow along

  664. in verses 24 to 25.

  665. It says,

  666. Then Nebuchadnezzar

  667. was astonished

  668. and rose up in haste.

  669. He declared

  670. to his counselors,

  671. Did we not cast

  672. three men

  673. bound into the fire?

  674. They answered

  675. and said to the king,

  676. True, O king.

  677. He answered

  678. and said,

  679. But I see

  680. four men

  681. unbound

  682. walking in the midst

  683. of the fire

  684. and they are not hurt

  685. and the appearance

  686. of the fourth

  687. is like the son

  688. of the gods.

  689. So point number two,

  690. Nebuchadnezzar

  691. observes the Hebrews' life.

  692. Nebuchadnezzar

  693. observes

  694. the Hebrews' life.

  695. Nebuchadnezzar

  696. cannot believe

  697. his eyes.

  698. His fuming rage

  699. turns into surprise

  700. as he observes

  701. five things.

  702. There are four men

  703. instead of three.

  704. They are unbound

  705. instead of bound.

  706. They're walking

  707. instead of fallen.

  708. They're unharmed

  709. instead of incinerated.

  710. And there is

  711. the presence of God

  712. instead of the absence

  713. in the fire.

  714. So he confirms

  715. what he commanded

  716. with his advisors.

  717. We cast three in, right?

  718. Interestingly,

  719. the detail that stands out

  720. to Nebuchadnezzar

  721. is not the fact

  722. that they're unharmed.

  723. It's not the fact

  724. that they're walking

  725. in a burning flame.

  726. The detail that stands out

  727. to him

  728. is that there are

  729. four people

  730. in the fire.

  731. So who is this

  732. fourth person?

  733. Is it an angel?

  734. Is it the angel

  735. of the Lord?

  736. Is it a pre-incarnate

  737. appearance of the son?

  738. And the simple answer

  739. is that I don't know.

  740. And I don't think

  741. the Bible tells us.

  742. What we hear

  743. is actually from

  744. Nebuchadnezzar's perspective.

  745. It's what he sees,

  746. not necessarily

  747. what the author says.

  748. And I think you'll agree

  749. that we don't want

  750. to get our theology

  751. from a pagan king

  752. who hasn't yet

  753. submitted to God.

  754. There are other texts

  755. that we can use

  756. that use the same phrase,

  757. son of the gods,

  758. like Genesis 6-2

  759. or even Job 1-6,

  760. 2-1,

  761. and 38-7.

  762. And these all seem

  763. to refer to angels.

  764. Even further along

  765. in the passage,

  766. Nebuchadnezzar refers

  767. to this saying

  768. that God sent

  769. his angel

  770. and delivered him.

  771. But it's still

  772. Nebuchadnezzar's words,

  773. so we can't necessarily

  774. take it on face value.

  775. Whoever this fourth figure is,

  776. I think it's important

  777. to see that he bears

  778. God's special presence.

  779. That's what the author

  780. wants us to know.

  781. He bears God's special presence

  782. in order to keep

  783. these men from death.

  784. But there's a question

  785. that still remains.

  786. Why have a fourth person

  787. at all?

  788. It's the same kind of thing

  789. that we ask with Nebuchadnezzar.

  790. Why heat up the fire

  791. seven times

  792. if it's already as hot

  793. to kill the Hebrews?

  794. Why send the fourth person?

  795. God didn't have to do this.

  796. Right?

  797. If he's the creator,

  798. he could have just

  799. allowed their bodies

  800. not to be burned

  801. by the fire.

  802. And actually,

  803. in Daniel 6,

  804. when Daniel's thrown

  805. into the lion's den,

  806. he doesn't send

  807. an angel in there.

  808. He just shuts the mouths

  809. of the lions.

  810. The reason why I think

  811. God does this

  812. is that by sending

  813. the fourth person

  814. into the fire,

  815. Nebuchadnezzar knows

  816. without a shadow

  817. of a doubt

  818. that God is the one

  819. who delivered them.

  820. God is the one

  821. who delivered them.

  822. He cannot get around it.

  823. It's kind of the difference

  824. between a speed limit sign

  825. and a police officer.

  826. Right?

  827. Both represent

  828. the enforcement

  829. of law and justice.

  830. With a speed limit sign,

  831. you can see it

  832. and you know

  833. that there's the presence

  834. of a legal boundary.

  835. But you slow down

  836. for the police officer.

  837. Similarly,

  838. Nebuchadnezzar

  839. could have realized

  840. that the presence of God,

  841. he could have recognized

  842. the presence of God

  843. by seeing Shadrach,

  844. Meshach,

  845. and Abednego

  846. come out of the fire

  847. unharmed.

  848. There's a shadow

  849. of a doubt

  850. that he could have done that.

  851. But what caught

  852. his attention

  853. was the fourth person.

  854. God was in this place

  855. and God delivered

  856. his servants.

  857. Verse 26 moves us

  858. to our final point.

  859. Point number three,

  860. Nebuchadnezzar

  861. confesses God's deliverance.

  862. Nebuchadnezzar

  863. confesses God's deliverance.

  864. Follow along with me

  865. in verse 26

  866. as we read

  867. the rest of the passage.

  868. Then Nebuchadnezzar

  869. came near to the door

  870. of the burning fiery furnace

  871. and he declared,

  872. Shadrach, Meshach,

  873. and Abednego,

  874. servants of the most high God,

  875. come out

  876. and come here.

  877. Then Shadrach, Meshach,

  878. and Abednego

  879. came out

  880. from the fire.

  881. And the satraps

  882. and the prefects

  883. and the governors

  884. and the king's counselors

  885. gathered together

  886. and saw that the fire

  887. had not had any power

  888. over the bodies

  889. of those men.

  890. The hair of their heads

  891. was not singed,

  892. their cloaks

  893. were not harmed,

  894. and no smell of fire

  895. had come upon them.

  896. Nebuchadnezzar

  897. answered and said,

  898. Blessed be the God

  899. of Shadrach, Meshach,

  900. and Abednego

  901. who has sent his angel

  902. and delivered

  903. his servants

  904. who trusted in him

  905. and set aside

  906. the king's command

  907. and yielded up

  908. their bodies

  909. rather than served

  910. and worshipped

  911. any other God

  912. except their own.

  913. Therefore,

  914. I make a decree.

  915. Any people,

  916. nation,

  917. or language

  918. that speaks anything

  919. against the God

  920. of Shadrach,

  921. Meshach,

  922. and Abednego

  923. shall be torn

  924. limb from limb

  925. and their houses

  926. laid in ruins.

  927. For there is no other God

  928. who is able to rescue

  929. in this way.

  930. Then the king

  931. promoted Shadrach,

  932. Meshach,

  933. and Abednego

  934. in the province

  935. of Babylon.

  936. At this point,

  937. Nebuchadnezzar

  938. has a different attitude.

  939. Notice the title

  940. that he uses

  941. for God.

  942. He calls them

  943. servants

  944. of the Most High God.

  945. He cannot deny

  946. that there is

  947. a God in heaven

  948. who is promised

  949. in chapter 2

  950. to build a kingdom

  951. that will outlast him

  952. and he will

  953. accomplish it.

  954. But think about

  955. this title

  956. in the chapter's context.

  957. Nebuchadnezzar

  958. has set up

  959. a golden image

  960. that all are supposed

  961. to bow down to

  962. and yet he recognizes

  963. that there is a God

  964. who reigns

  965. even over

  966. the idol,

  967. even over

  968. the king

  969. of the universe

  970. or of the known world

  971. at that time.

  972. I wonder

  973. if our lives

  974. reflect this kind

  975. of understanding

  976. of God's character,

  977. that he is

  978. the Most High God.

  979. Do you see yourself

  980. today

  981. as a servant

  982. of the king

  983. or as a king

  984. to be served?

  985. I would commend

  986. to us

  987. Paul's mindset

  988. in 2 Corinthians 5

  989. 14-15.

  990. He says

  991. that the love

  992. of Christ

  993. controls us

  994. because we have

  995. concluded this,

  996. that one has died

  997. for all,

  998. therefore all have died.

  999. And he died

  1000. for all

  1001. that those

  1002. who live

  1003. might no longer

  1004. live for themselves,

  1005. but for him

  1006. who for their sake

  1007. died and was raised.

  1008. So let me ask,

  1009. what controls you?

  1010. Who are you serving?

  1011. What determines

  1012. how you order

  1013. your time?

  1014. How you spend

  1015. or save your money?

  1016. What retirement

  1017. looks like?

  1018. What kind of spouse

  1019. that you're pursuing?

  1020. How you treat

  1021. your husband

  1022. or your wife

  1023. or your siblings

  1024. or your parent?

  1025. And why should

  1026. the love of Christ

  1027. control us?

  1028. I think Paul

  1029. gives the why.

  1030. He says

  1031. that one,

  1032. that is Jesus Christ,

  1033. has died

  1034. for all.

  1035. Why did he have

  1036. to die for all?

  1037. Well,

  1038. this is the gospel.

  1039. That we all

  1040. have sinned

  1041. and fallen short

  1042. of the glory

  1043. of God.

  1044. Romans 3-23.

  1045. And that the wages

  1046. of sin

  1047. is death.

  1048. Romans 6-23.

  1049. In other words,

  1050. we all earn death

  1051. by setting ourselves

1052. up as our own gods,

  1053. calling attention

  1054. to ourselves

  1055. and making ourselves

  1056. out to be

  1057. the center.

  1058. And someone

  1059. has to die

  1060. because that's

  1061. the penalty

  1062. for sin.

  1063. But instead

  1064. of us,

  1065. Jesus Christ

  1066. stood as a substitute

  1067. in our place.

  1068. Instead of us

  1069. bearing the fire

  1070. of God's wrath,

  1071. Jesus stood

  1072. on a cross

  1073. and bore it

  1074. for us.

  1075. And by repenting

  1076. of our sins

  1077. and turning

  1078. to the God

  1079. who is most high,

  1080. who is Lord

  1081. and Savior,

  1082. we are united

  1083. to him.

  1084. This is what we

  1085. sang about

  1086. in the third song.

  1087. We receive

  1088. his righteousness

  1089. and he takes

  1090. our sin.

  1091. Gone.

1092. As far as the east

  1093. is from the west,

  1094. so far

  1095. has he removed

  1096. the sin

  1097. of those

  1098. who love him.

  1099. the question

  1100. is not

  1101. do we need

  1102. saving?

  1103. The question

  1104. is who

  1105. do we turn

  1106. to for

  1107. deliverance?

  1108. Is it Jesus

  1109. or is it

  1110. something else?

  1111. Jesus gives

  1112. a warning

  1113. to those

  1114. who have not

  1115. yet turned

  1116. from their sin

  1117. in Matthew 13,

  1118. 41 to 42.

  1119. He says

  1120. that the Son

  1121. of Man

  1122. will send

  1123. his angels

  1124. and they

  1125. will gather

  1126. out of his

  1127. kingdom

  1128. all causes

  1129. of sin

  1130. and lawbreakers

  1131. and throw

  1132. them into

  1133. the fiery

  1134. furnace.

  1135. In that

  1136. place

  1137. there will

  1138. be weeping

  1139. and gnashing

  1140. of teeth.

  1141. You see

  1142. in the end

  1143. it's ultimately

  1144. the unfaithful

  1145. who are in danger

  1146. not the faithful.

  1147. Shadrach,

  1148. Meshach

  1149. and Abednego

  1150. were ready

1151. to go in the fire

  1152. because they

  1153. had already

  1154. been delivered.

  1155. It had no

  1156. danger for them.

  1157. They knew

  1158. where they

  1159. were going

  1160. but there

  1161. is a danger

  1162. for those

  1163. who remain

  1164. in their sin

  1165. and yet

  1166. for us

  1167. who believe

  1168. Colossians 3,

  1169. 1, 13

  1170. or sorry

  1171. Colossians 1, 13

  1172. reminds us

  1173. that he

  1174. has delivered

  1175. us from

  1176. the domain

  1177. of darkness

  1178. and transferred

  1179. us into

  1180. the kingdom

  1181. of his

  1182. Son

  1183. in whom

  1184. we have

  1185. redemption

  1186. the forgiveness

  1187. of our sins.

  1188. That

  1189. is good news.

  1190. That's good news

  1191. for us.

  1192. The physical testimony

  1193. of the witnesses

  1194. who see God's power

  1195. in verse 27

  1196. draw our attention

  1197. to the fullness

  1198. of God's salvation.

  1199. Look at what

  1200. the king's court

  1201. sees

  1202. in verse 27.

  1203. The fire

  1204. had no

  1205. had not

  1206. had any

  1207. power

  1208. over the

  1209. bodies

  1210. of those

  1211. men.

  1212. Isn't that

  1213. an amazing

  1214. verse?

  1215. No power

  1216. because God

  1217. was with them.

  1218. The thing

  1219. that threatened

  1220. death for them

  1221. God was able

  1222. to deliver them

  1223. from.

  1224. So Nebuchadnezzar

  1225. has nothing

  1226. left to do

  1227. but to bless

  1228. God

  1229. and his

  1230. blessing here

  1231. is actually

  1232. the interpretation

  1233. of the whole

  1234. of the events

  1235. that we just

  1236. heard.

  1237. He answers

  1238. the question

  1239. who is the

  1240. God of Shadrach

  1241. Meshach

  1242. and Abednego?

  1243. And he says

  1244. he's the kind

  1245. of God

  1246. that can

  1247. deliver.

  1248. No other

  1249. God

  1250. can deliver

  1251. in this way.

  1252. God alone

  1253. can save

  1254. those

  1255. who trust

  1256. in him

  1257. and put away

  1258. sin

  1259. and serve

  1260. him.

  1261. so serve

  1262. God

  1263. who alone

  1264. can save.

  1265. Serve God

  1266. who alone

  1267. can save.

  1268. He alone

  1269. is worthy

  1270. of it.

  1271. I realize

  1272. now looking

  1273. back at my

  1274. five-year-old

  1275. self

  1276. that

  1277. my ambition

  1278. to save

  1279. the world

  1280. wasn't about

  1281. the world.

  1282. It was really

  1283. about me.

  1284. I wanted

  1285. to be

  1286. my own

  1287. savior

  1288. and everyone

  1289. else's.

  1290. I wanted

  1291. to be

  1292. the one

  1293. who rose

  1294. above the

  1295. mundane

  1296. messy

  1297. realities

  1298. of life

  1299. as a

  1300. five-year-old.

  1301. Sibling

  1302. fights

  1303. and desert

  1304. restrictions

  1305. and other

  1306. things like

  1307. that.

  1308. And in

  1309. some ways

  1310. not much

  1311. has changed.

  1312. I still

  1313. struggle

  1314. with the

  1315. desire to

  1316. rise above

  1317. the mundane

  1318. things of

  1319. life.

  1320. The

  1321. marital

  1322. needs,

  1323. the financial

  1324. questions,

  1325. the relational

  1326. tensions,

  1327. the house

  1328. chores,

  1329. the traffic

  1330. issues,

  1331. the spiritual

  1332. conflict

  1333. and the

  1334. like.

  1335. I'm

  1336. tempted

  1337. to look

  1338. to myself

  1339. as my

  1340. own savior

  1341. or to

  1342. look to

  1343. another

  1344. comfort

  1345. to deliver

  1346. me from

  1347. what only

  1348. God is

  1349. able to

  1350. do.

  1351. But

  1352. praise God

  1353. that Jesus

  1354. rescued that

  1355. self-centered

  1356. five-year-old

  1357. year-old at

  1358. the age of

  1359. twelve.

  1360. Praise God

  1361. that he

  1362. still rescues

  1363. me through

  1364. his word

  1365. and through

  1366. the ministry

  1367. of others.

  1368. So let's

  1369. continue to

  1370. seek the

  1371. God who

  1372. alone is

  1373. able to

  1374. deliver.

  1375. Let's

  1376. pray.

  1377. pray.

  1378. Father,

  1379. thank you

  1380. that you

  1381. are a

  1382. God who

  1383. can

  1384. deliver

  1385. us.

  1386. Thank you

  1387. that you

  1388. have become

  1389. our Lord

  1390. and Savior

  1391. through the

  1392. death and

  1393. resurrection

  1394. of Jesus.

  1395. Lord,

  1396. we're still

  1397. tempted to

  1398. trust in

  1399. ourselves.

  1400. We're still

  1401. tempted to

  1402. turn to

  1403. other

  1404. things.

  1405. We still

  1406. struggle to

  1407. be our

  1408. own gods

  1409. and look to

  1410. ourselves as

  1411. the center.

  1412. But God,

  1413. you are able

  1414. to continue

  1415. to rescue

  1416. us and

  1417. keep us

  1418. and hold us

  1419. fast in

  1420. Christ.

  1421. And I

  1422. pray that as

  1423. we go from

  1424. here,

  1425. Lord,

  1426. you would

  1427. use your

  1428. word and

  1429. the ministry

  1430. of others

  1431. to continue

  1432. to do

  1433. that work.

  1434. Thank you

  1435. for your

  1436. word.

  1437. Thank you

  1438. for your

  1439. church.

  1440. In Jesus'

  1441. name,

  1442. Amen.

  1443. Amen.
