  1. I'd like to invite you to turn in your Bibles with me if you would to Daniel chapter 4.

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  2. ! We're going to be continuing our series in the life of Daniel and the second part of Daniel chapter 4 beginning in verse 28.

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  3. I appreciate the song. Thank you, worship team, for introducing that to us. It really does help to summarize really our message for today that all of the things that God allows to happen in our life is meant to lead us to His glory in our good.

  4. I'm reminded of the passage in Jeremiah 29 11 that I'm sure you've quoted or heard.

  5. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.

  6. We like good plans. We like good pathways. We like happy, easy lives.

  7. I wonder this morning if I were to tell you that there is a guaranteed roadmap, a guaranteed strategic plan, as it were, to arrive at greatness, to enjoy good things, to be exalted, as it were.

  8. Is it a plan that you would say, whoa, sign me up, I want to know that plan, let's go for it.

  9. Yes, the question is a setup.

  10. You know, if you've been in business or management for any length of time, certainly you're familiar with the book that's written by Stephen Covey that are the seven habits of highly effective people.

  11. It was written back in 1989, about 35 years ago.

  12. And in that book, he puts together these seven, I guess, universal principles, as it were, that kind of arrive at kind of the character.

  13. And through observation and evaluating the men and the women in industry and business who were the most successful and what was common to them in presenting them to the world around them.

  14. So that they, too, could understand, how do I experience, how do I enjoy this kind of effectiveness?

  15. I want to be that kind of person.

  16. I want to have habits that lead to an effective life.

  17. This has been kind of the benchmark for any successful person over the last 35 years or so.

  18. It continues to be a bestseller.

  19. More than 40 million copies of this book are sold in more than 38 different languages.

  20. And so it is one of those go-to books, as it were, for business and management.

  21. One example might be be proactive.

  22. That's principle number one.

  23. Focus and act on what you can control and influence instead of what you can't.

  24. Principle number two, or habit number two.

  25. Begin with the end in mind.

  26. Define clear measures of success and plan to achieve them.

  27. And on and on they go.

  28. Stephen Covey, when he died in 2012,

  29. estimated his net worth was somewhere around $170 million.

  30. And he had built a 1.4 billion empire.

  31. He's recognized by Time magazine as one of the top 25 most influential people in America.

  32. That's saying something.

  33. He's arrived.

  34. This idea, of course, is if you follow these habits, these principles,

  35. that you too can be highly effective in your place of business or management or industry.

  36. I wonder now, coming back to our study in Daniel,

  37. if Nebuchadnezzar may have written a book like that.

  38. Seven habits of highly effective empires.

  39. Or seven habits of highly effective kings.

  40. Certainly he was one who could have written such a book.

  41. A man who is hugely productive.

  42. The building projects of Babylon were epic beyond compare.

  43. A man who finished what he started.

  44. A man who, by the way, through his engineering genius,

  45. was able to architect not only a defensive system that was unprecedented in the day with the walls,

  46. but a ziggurat built, a temple built to Marduk,

  47. which towered 288 feet in the air.

  48. The hanging gardens were a testimony to his engineering prowess and genius.

  49. Training and empowering leaders.

  50. Casting a vision.

  51. Cementing loyalty, you might say,

  52. with putting up the golden image and forcing all of his officials to bow down.

  53. Establishing trade networks.

  54. By the way, it is something I just discovered this week,

  55. that the Silk Road actually began under Nebuchadnezzar's reign,

  56. starting in Babylon and stretched all the way into Turkey and all the way into India.

  57. About 1,500 miles this Silk Road began during Nebuchadnezzar's reign.

  58. His technological prowess, his ability to assimilate the best and brightest minds from around the world.

  59. Truly, he was one who could write a book about effective leadership.

  60. Nebuchadnezzar's leadership was genius.

  61. It begins to be this template for subsequent empires.

  62. And we'll see that in our study next week when we turn the chapter to chapter 5 and then to chapter 6.

  63. And we see the media Persian empire taking over.

  64. God also, you might be surprised to find, has a list.

  65. A list of greatness.

  66. A list of highly effective qualities, habits for his effective leaders.

  67. His effective disciples.

  68. One such list is found for us in Luke chapter 7 verse 28.

    Luke 7:28

  69. When Jesus is speaking about the greatest man born to woman, John the Baptist, he says this,

  70. I tell you, among those born of women, none is greater than John,

  71. yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

  72. God's list is quite specific.

  73. His list is quite simple.

  74. His list would focus in on the one quality that will govern a life,

  75. and that is humility.

  76. The list of greatness is those who are willing to step into the place

  77. and submit themselves to God's purposes.

  78. Humility is the key to greatness, as we find.

  79. Jesus shares the same list as disciples.

  80. In Matthew chapter 20, he says,

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  81. The last will be first, and the first will be last.

  82. It shall not be among you, speaking about them as being lords over others.

  83. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant.

  84. Whoever would be first among you must be your slave.

  85. It's a little counterintuitive.

  86. It's a little upside down.

  87. In God's economy, the way up is the way down.

  88. That's the way it works.

  89. Greatness is achieved through service.

  90. That's why the apostle Peter will say much the same thing in 1 Peter 5, verses 6 and 7.

    1 Peter 5:6

  91. He says,

  92. Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God,

  93. that he may exalt you in due time.

  94. And if you guys remember what the summary statement across last week's message was,

  95. do you remember that?

  96. Humble yourself, or God will humble you.

  97. Humble yourself, or God will humble you.

  98. And by the way, this is the encouragement to all of us,

  99. is that God's humbling work in our life is always with a purpose.

  100. God's humbling work is to lead you to him.

  101. As we sang, to come to appreciate,

  102. and we'll see this at the end of our chapter,

  103. to come to appreciate his glory as being preeminent over everything.

  104. Everything is worth the cost to see the glory of God,

  105. to experience, to enjoy, to taste the glory of God.

  106. That's the divine strategy for success.

  107. Throughout the Bible, all the way up and down,

  108. the way to greatness is the way to humility,

  109. and that's what we find in our passage today.

  110. Today, God humbles us with the purpose of restoring us.

  111. That's the second half of this passage.

  112. And really, that's what we see written across this entire chapter.

  113. It begins and ends.

  114. It's not as humility as being an end to itself,

  115. but a pathway to get to the result.

  116. And we see the result at the very beginning of this chapter,

  117. echoed again at the end of this chapter,

  118. that the result of God's humbling work in our life

  119. is to lead us to restoration,

  120. to lead us to worship,

  121. to lead us to see who he is,

  122. and really to come to appreciate that he is everything.

  123. Notice in Daniel chapter 4, verse 1,

    Daniel 4:1

  124. I hope you're there.

  125. If you're using the Pew Bible,

  126. I believe it's on page 741.

  127. 741.

  128. It would be good for you to follow along with us.

  129. It says,

  130. King Nebuchadnezzar,

  131. to all peoples, nations, languages that dwell in all the earth,

  132. peace be multiplied to you.

  133. It has seemed good to me to show the signs

  134. and wonders that the Most High God has done for me.

  135. How great are his signs,

  136. how mighty his wonders.

  137. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,

  138. and his dominion endures from generation to generation.

  139. This testimony,

  140. this witness that's written across this book,

  141. this is the testimony of Nebuchadnezzar

  142. into introducing the subject matter of chapter 4.

  143. This is what he wants to say,

  144. and then throughout the rest of the chapter,

  145. we're going to find out how he got there.

  146. What God did graciously for Nebuchadnezzar

  147. to bring him to this point,

  148. and what God must do

  149. to every one of us in this room

  150. to bring us to the same point.

  151. Humble yourself,

  152. or God will humble you.

  153. And when he does,

  154. you can rejoice,

  155. because then you can see God

  156. and experience him

  157. the way he intends to be experienced.

  158. That's where we end.

  159. This chapter in Daniel chapter 4,

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  160. 34 and 35, notice,

  161. at the end of days,

  162. I,

  163. Nebuchadnezzar,

  164. lifted my eyes to heaven.

  165. My reason returned to me.

  166. I blessed the Most High

  167. and praised and honored him

  168. who lives forever.

  169. His dominion is an everlasting dominion.

  170. His kingdom endures from generation to generation.

  171. All the inhabitants of the earth

  172. are counted as nothing,

  173. and he does according to his will

  174. among the hosts of heaven

  175. and among the inhabitants of the earth,

  176. and none can stay his hand

  177. or say to him,

  178. what have you done?

  179. This morning we're back in Daniel chapter 4,

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  180. and we're concluding our chapter.

  181. For those of you who weren't with us last week,

  182. just to kind of catch you up

  183. to where we are,

  184. Nebuchadnezzar,

  185. at the beginning of this chapter,

  186. is celebrating,

  187. congratulating himself.

  188. He is sitting in ease.

  189. He's in his palace.

  190. He's looking over the landscape of Babylon,

  191. and he's thinking to himself,

  192. ha ha,

  193. look what I did.

  194. I am pretty amazing.

  195. And then God sends him this dream.

  196. This dream of this tree

  197. that spreads across the entire earth.

  198. It says that its greatness expanded

  199. even to the heavens,

  200. that all the beasts of the field,

  201. the birds of the air,

  202. were not only protected by its shade,

  203. but were filled by its fruit.

  204. It was the kind of tree

  205. that demonstrated the expansive nature

  206. of Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom

  207. and the way in which his kingdom

  208. was helping to meet the needs

  209. of the known world.

  210. at the time.

  211. Nebuchadnezzar decides

  212. that he wants to understand

  213. and to know

  214. what this dream actually means.

  215. So he calls in his counselors,

  216. his astrologers,

  217. the Chaldeans,

  218. the soothsayers,

  219. and he brings them in

  220. so that he can find

  221. an interpretation to this dream.

  222. Of course,

  223. they could not interpret the dream.

  224. And so he finally calls in,

  225. Nebuchadnezzar calls in Daniel,

  226. and Daniel begins to lay this out for him

  227. and to help him understand,

  228. Nebuchadnezzar,

  229. you're the tree.

  230. And this tree that fills the earth

  231. is what God has accomplished

  232. for you and through you,

  233. and not only having dominion

  234. over the known world,

  235. but in allowing your kingdom to thrive.

  236. But in the middle of this dream,

  237. we find a watcher,

  238. and that watcher is an angel

  239. who was commanded

  240. to chop this tree down.

  241. And so the tree is chopped down,

  242. the branches are cut off,

  243. all that remains is the trunk.

  244. And the trunk remains,

  245. and it's wrapped with a bronze band,

  246. it's tied up,

  247. and it's confined.

  248. And this is an image of Nebuchadnezzar,

  249. what will happen to him.

  250. We come to Daniel 4, 26,

  251. it says,

  252. And here's where we begin to understand

  253. that this dream has a two-part promise.

  254. The first part of the promise

  255. is going to involve humility.

  256. The second part of this promise

  257. is working towards the ultimate destination,

  258. and that ultimate destination

  259. is restoration.

  260. This tree isn't cut down and burned

  261. and uprooted and thrown away.

  262. The tree and the stump remains

  263. because God has a purpose

  264. for Nebuchadnezzar's humility

  265. to bring restoration.

  266. So that now Daniel in verse 27

  267. now provides some exhortation,

  268. provides some counsel,

  269. So based upon what this dream says,

  270. based upon its interpretation,

  271. here is my advice to you, O king.

  272. Therefore, O king,

  273. let my counsel be acceptable to you.

  274. Break off your sins

  275. by practicing righteousness

  276. and your iniquities

  277. by showing mercy to the oppressed

  278. that there may be perhaps

  279. a lengthening of your prosperity.

  280. Now that brings us

  281. to the beginning of our passage today

  282. in verses 28 to 37.

  283. And the opening words of verse 28

  284. say this,

  285. All this came upon king Nebuchadnezzar.

  286. All this came upon king Nebuchadnezzar.

  287. And then dropping down to verse 33,

  288. Immediately the word was fulfilled

  289. against Nebuchadnezzar.

  290. It may be worthwhile

  291. to underline those two phrases

  292. because they point to the testimony

  293. of God's promise.

  294. And that's our first point this morning.

  295. God's promise to humble the king

  296. is now underway,

  297. is now being fulfilled.

  298. God is true to his word.

  299. God's word will not fail.

  300. You can take it to the bank.

  301. All this came upon king Nebuchadnezzar.

  302. And we see that all of this came

  303. in spite of a couple of things.

  304. First, it came in spite of the delay.

  305. In spite of the delay.

  306. Notice in verse 29,

  307. it says,

  308. At the end of twelve months,

  309. he was walking on the roof

  310. of his royal palace of Babylon,

  311. and the king answered and said,

  312. It is not this great Babylon

  313. which I have built

  314. by my mighty power

  315. as a royal residence

  316. and for the glory of my majesty.

  317. While the words were still

  318. in the king's mouth,

  319. there fell a voice from heaven,

  320. O king Nebuchadnezzar,

  321. to you it is spoken,

  322. the kingdom has departed from you.

  323. God is going to fulfill his word.

  324. God is going to bring Nebuchadnezzar down.

  325. God is going to be good to his promise

  326. that he's spoken.

  327. Regardless of the fact

  328. that the twelve months have expired,

  329. God's promises stand

  330. regardless of the time.

  331. Regardless of the delay.

  332. All this came upon Nebuchadnezzar.

  333. And now God's patience had run out.

  334. Now the time had expired.

  335. The dream which God had given to the king

  336. was now playing out before him.

  337. God's word was true.

  338. All of this.

  339. And that's an important word to underscore.

  340. It came about in totality.

  341. It came about in completion.

  342. It came about in fullness.

  343. Every word that God had spoken

  344. to Nebuchadnezzar through the dream

  345. and through the interpretation,

  346. every single word

  347. and every single letter

  348. was going to be fulfilled.

  349. In totality.

  350. Not one piece of the dream

  351. would remain unfulfilled.

  352. The entire warning

  353. landed on Nebuchadnezzar

  354. in full measure.

  355. God was not slack

  356. regarding his promise.

  357. A phrase that's derived from

  358. 2 Peter chapter 3

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  359. or familiar to us.

  360. 2 Peter chapter 3 verse 9 says,

    2 Peter 3:9

  361. Don't think for a moment

  362. that you're getting away with it.

  363. It's so easy

  364. to just keep going through life

  365. and to keep spending our pleasures

  366. into nothing's happening

  367. so it must be okay.

  368. That may be what Nebuchadnezzar

  369. was under the impression of.

  370. But God's delay

  371. is always intended

  372. to lead us to repentance.

  373. God's delay is his grace to us

  374. to lead us to himself.

  375. And that's what he's doing.

  376. For 12 months,

  377. Nebuchadnezzar has bided his time.

  378. Many commentators have suggested

  379. that this delay

  380. was a grace to Nebuchadnezzar

  381. to give him room to repent.

  382. And that may be.

  383. But I'm more inclined to think

  384. that Nebuchadnezzar

  385. in working with Daniel

  386. for 30 plus years,

  387. now towards the end

  388. of Nebuchadnezzar's life,

  389. probably about 10 years away

  390. from when he actually dies,

  391. here he is.

  392. He knows that Daniel's God

  393. is not a God to mess with.

  394. And this warning has come

  395. with striking force.

  396. He's learned

  397. you don't mess with Daniel's God.

  398. He's even said for himself

  399. back in Daniel 2, verse 47,

    Daniel 2:47

  400. he says,

  401. truly your God

  402. is the God of gods

  403. and the Lord of kings

  404. and a receiver,

  405. a revealer of mysteries.

  406. Later,

  407. to Shadrach, Meshach,

  408. and Abednego,

  409. and as a result of

  410. God's deliverance of them

  411. in the fiery furnace,

  412. he says in Daniel 3,

    Daniel 3:29

  413. verse 29,

  414. any people,

  415. nation,

  416. or language

  417. that speaks anything

  418. against the God

  419. of Shadrach, Meshach,

  420. and Abednego

  421. shall be torn limb from limb

  422. and their houses

  423. laid in ruins,

  424. for there is no other God

  425. who is able to rescue

  426. in this way.

  427. I'm inclined to think

  428. that Nebuchadnezzar

  429. was abiding his time.

  430. I'm under the impression

  431. or inclined to believe

  432. that he's kind of

  433. restrained himself

  434. a little bit.

  435. He's kind of put some things

  436. on pause for a moment.

  437. He recognizes

  438. he doesn't want to step

  439. out of line.

  440. And of course,

  441. all of this is superficial.

  442. Of course,

  443. all of this is noted

  444. by self-preservation.

  445. There's not real change

  446. that's happened.

  447. Maybe he's adopted

  448. or accepted

  449. or put into place

  450. even some of the advice

  451. that Daniel would give

  452. to him in verse 27.

  453. But all of this

  454. is short-lived.

  455. And the word of God

  456. is timeless.

  457. It would be fulfilled

  458. in spite of the delay.

  459. We turn now

  460. to verse 29.

  461. We see that God's word

  462. is going to come

  463. in spite of his accomplishments

  464. or in spite of his achievements.

  465. Regardless of how great

  466. Nebuchadnezzar thought he was

  467. and the majesty

  468. and the glory

  469. of his kingdom

  470. that he thinks

  471. he put into place,

  472. regardless of that,

  473. God is going to show

  474. Nebuchadnezzar

  475. who's really in charge.

  476. Notice verse 29.

  477. At the end of 12 months,

  478. he was walking on the roof

  479. of his royal palace

  480. of Babylon

  481. and the king answered

  482. and said,

  483. Is not this great Babylon

  484. which I have built

  485. by my mighty power

  486. as a royal residence

  487. for my glory

  488. and majesty?

  489. He's walking on

  490. his patio roof.

  491. The structures in that day

  492. were flat roofs,

  493. kind of patio-like.

  494. Likely one of the highest

  495. structures in Babylon

  496. which would have given him

  497. an unobstructed vantage point

  498. to the entire city.

  499. Here he is looking

  500. over this city

  501. and admiring

  502. the beauty

  503. of Babylon.

  504. We know from history

  505. that Babylon

  506. was one of the preeminent cities

  507. during that day.

  508. One of the most

  509. magnificent cities

  510. that was known

  511. on the earth.

  512. Even a hundred years later,

  513. a Greek historian

  514. would visit the city

  515. and he would recount

  516. the splendor

  517. of this city

  518. a hundred years

  519. after Nebuchadnezzar

  520. was there.

  521. Alexander the Great

  522. planned to make

  523. this city

  524. the headquarters

  525. for his empire

  526. because of how glorious

  527. a city it was.

  528. A city that was about

  529. 15 miles square

  530. had somewhere around

  531. a million or more people

  532. as inhabitants

  533. surrounded by a broad

  534. moat,

  535. deep water

  536. filled this moat,

  537. an intricate system

  538. of double walls.

  539. The inner wall

  540. was 21 feet thick.

  541. The outer wall

  542. was 11 feet thick

  543. and every 60 feet

  544. there was a watchtower

  545. around this entire

  546. expanse

  547. of this city.

  548. The height of the walls,

  549. although it's not known,

  550. are likely to be

  551. the same height

  552. as the gate of Ishtar

  553. which is about

  554. 40 feet high.

  555. Eight gates

  556. provided access

  557. to the city.

  558. This Ishtar gate

  559. being on the north side

  560. and walking

  561. into the Ishtar gate

  562. would be this

  563. expansive road

  564. that would lead

  565. straight,

  566. just a little over

  567. a half a mile

  568. would lead straight

  569. to the temple

  570. of Marduk.

  571. A towering structure

  572. of almost

  573. 30 stories tall.

  574. A seven level

  575. ziggurat.

  576. Then within the city

  577. helping to connect

  578. the east and the west

  579. would be

  580. this bridge,

  581. a 400 foot

  582. expanse bridge

  583. spanning over

  584. the Euphrates River.

  585. There were

  586. some 53 temples.

  587. At least

  588. three palaces.

  589. One of those palaces

  590. and likely

  591. the palace

  592. that Nebuchadnezzar

  593. is speaking from

  594. was about

  595. 350 yards

  596. by 200 yards

  597. in its area.

  598. Now,

  599. my math isn't

  600. always that good

  601. but bear with me.

  602. That would be

  603. approximately

  604. 70,000 square yards

  605. which means

  606. it would be

  607. 630,000 square feet.

  608. About 14 and a half acres

  609. this one palace

  610. would have taken up.

  611. That's the kind of glory

  612. we're talking about.

  613. There's no wonder

  614. why Nebuchadnezzar

  615. is like,

  616. yeah,

  617. I'm all of that.

  618. Babylon also boasted

  619. the famous

  620. hanging gardens.

  621. He married a woman

  622. that was coming

  623. from the mountain country

  624. so he brought

  625. the mountain

  626. to Babylon.

  627. From this roof

  628. of his palace

  629. he's looking out

  630. and he's filled

  631. with awe

  632. at all

  633. that his hands

  634. have accomplished.

  635. It's interesting

  636. that most of the bricks

  637. that have been

  638. excavated from that time

  639. actually bear

  640. Nebuchadnezzar's name

  641. stamped on the brick.

  642. But here he is

  643. admiring his accomplishments

  644. and before

  645. he finishes

  646. his sentence

  647. the word of God

  648. comes to Nebuchadnezzar.

  649. We find that

  650. in verse 31.

  651. The word of God

  652. is going to be carried out

  653. immediately.

  654. Notice,

  655. while the words

  656. were still

  657. in the king's mouth

  658. there fell

  659. a voice

  660. from heaven

  661. meaning

  662. God

  663. stopped

  664. Nebuchadnezzar

  665. in his tracks.

  666. He interrupted

  667. his congratulatory

  668. escapade

  669. his celebration.

  670. God cut off

  671. the words

  672. from even

  673. finishing

  674. in Nebuchadnezzar's mouth.

  675. The kingdom

  676. has departed

  677. from you

  678. O Nebuchadnezzar.

  679. In other words

  680. you're done.

  681. It's over.

  682. You're relieved

  683. from duty.

  684. I wonder

  685. if you've ever

  686. experienced

  687. that moment.

  688. The moment

  689. where people

  690. have warned you

  691. about various things

  692. and you've

  693. kind of gotten

  694. away with it

  695. for a little while

  696. but then all

  697. of a sudden

  698. that person

  699. shows up

  700. they see you

  701. and catch you

  702. in the act

  703. and then

  704. that sinking

  705. feeling

  706. in your gut

  707. that begins

  708. to overwhelm you.

  709. We often talk

  710. about the

  711. hand in the

  712. cookie jar

  713. kind of moment

  714. but let me

  715. make this

  716. a little bit

  717. more relevant

  718. for the vast

  719. majority

  720. of us

  721. in this room.

  722. You know

  723. you're driving

  724. down the freeway

  725. and you know

  726. what the speed

  727. limit is

  728. and then

  729. all of a sudden

  730. you see out of the

  731. corner of your eye

  732. some movement

  733. and you realize

  734. that that movement

  735. is what church?

  736. A police officer

  737. he's pulling out

  738. and now his lights

  739. are on

  740. and you're looking

  741. in the mirrors

  742. and you realize

  743. oh

  744. that sinking

  745. feeling.

  746. Now I've never

  747. had that feeling

  748. but I'm sure

  749. all of you

  750. have.

  751. Fortunately

  752. it hasn't been

  753. recently

  754. but I better

  755. be careful

  756. we may have

  757. that this

  758. afternoon.

  759. I got to be

  760. careful.

  761. Nebuchadnezzar

  762. has been caught.

  763. The words

  764. are coming

  765. out of his

  766. mouth

  767. and I promise

  768. you in that

  769. moment

  770. he realizes

  771. I've blown it.

  772. The warning

  773. was given

  774. and not heeded.

  775. Here

  776. Nebuchadnezzar

  777. is experiencing

  778. the immediate

  779. consequences

  780. of his actions.

  781. This

  782. by the way

  783. is always

  784. the potential

  785. for an

  786. all powerful

  787. God.

  788. Nebuchadnezzar

  789. after this

  790. he will say

  791. as a summary

  792. here

  793. in verse

  794. 35

  795. who shall

  796. stay

  797. his hand.

  798. And then

  799. in verse

  800. 35

  801. he does

  802. according

  803. to his

  804. will

  805. among

  806. the

  807. host

  808. of

  809. heaven

  810. and

  811. among

  812. the

  813. inhabitants

  814. of the

  815. earth.

  816. None

  817. can say

  818. to him

  819. what have

  820. you done?

  821. That is

  822. always

  823. the potential

  824. of our

  825. all powerful

  826. supreme

  827. God.

  828. And yet

  829. God

  830. graciously

  831. kindly

  832. withholds

  833. his discipline

  834. withholds

  835. his

  836. humiliating

  837. works

  838. for the

  839. sake

  840. of

  841. calling

  842. us

  843. and

  844. granting

  845. us

  846. time

  847. that

  848. would

  849. lead

  850. us

  851. to

  852. repentance.

  853. Paul

  854. says

  855. of

  856. Christ

  857. in

  858. Colossians

  859. speaking

  860. of his

  861. power

  862. in

  863. Colossians

  864. 1

  865. 16

  866. and

  867. 17

  868. it says

  869. for

  870. by him

  871. all

  872. things

  873. were

  874. created

  875. in

  876. heaven

  877. and

  878. on

  879. earth

  880. visible

  881. and

  882. invisible

  883. whether

  884. thrones

  885. or

  886. dominions

  887. or

  888. rulers

  889. or

  890. authorities

  891. all

  892. things

  893. were

  894. created

  895. through

  896. him

  897. and

  898. for

  899. him

  900. and

  901. he

  902. is

  903. before

  904. all

  905. things

  906. and

  907. in

  908. him

  909. all

  910. things

  911. hold

  912. together

  913. that

  914. is

  915. our

  916. God

  917. Paul

  918. will say

  919. of

  920. Christ

  921. in

  922. Ephesians

  923. 1

  924. 21

  925. he

  926. says

  927. Christ

  928. is

  929. far

  930. above

  931. all

  932. rule

  933. and

  934. authority

  935. and

  936. power

  937. and

  938. dominion

  939. and

  940. above

  941. every

  942. name

  943. that

  944. is

  945. named

  946. not

  947. only

  948. in

  949. this

  950. age

  951. but

  952. also

  953. in

  954. the

  955. one

  956. to

  957. come

  958. in

  959. other

  960. words

  961. just

  962. because

  963. we've

  964. seen

  965. and

  966. witnessed

  967. the

  968. power

  969. of

  970. God

  971. in

  972. the

  973. past

  974. it's

  975. not

  976. confined

  977. to

  978. time

  979. and

  980. space

  981. it's

  982. transcendent

  983. and

  984. regardless

  985. of the

  986. powers

  987. that

  988. come

  989. Jesus

  990. is

  991. preeminent

  992. his

  993. power

  994. is

  995. supreme

  996. and

  997. when

  998. God

  999. chooses

  1000. to

  1001. act

  1002. no

  1003. power

  1004. on

  1005. heaven

  1006. and

  1007. earth

  1008. can

  1009. stand

  1010. against

  1011. it

  1012. and

  1013. when

  1014. he

  1015. chooses

  1016. to

  1017. wait

  1018. he

  1019. does

  1020. so

  1021. to

  1022. show

  1023. his

  1024. patience

  1025. his

  1026. forbearance

  1027. his

  1028. kindness

  1029. that is

  1030. meant to

  1031. lead

  1032. you

  1033. to

  1034. repentance

  1035. to

  1036. repentance

  1037. that's

  1038. what

  1039. Paul

  1040. says

  1041. in

  1042. Romans

    Romans 2:4

  1043. chapter

  1044. 2

  1045. verse

  1046. 4

  1047. do

  1048. you

  1049. presume

  1050. on the

  1051. riches

  1052. and the

  1053. kindness

  1054. and forbearance

  1055. and patience

  1056. of God

  1057. not knowing

  1058. that God's

  1059. kindness

  1060. is meant

  1061. to lead

  1062. you to

  1063. repentance

  1064. but

  1065. because

  1066. of

  1067. your

  1068. heart

  1069. and

  1070. impenance

  1071. in

  1072. heart

  1073. you

  1074. are

  1075. storing

  1076. up

  1077. wrath

  1078. for

  1079. yourself

  1080. on

  1081. the

  1082. day

  1083. of

  1084. wrath

  1085. when

  1086. God's

  1087. righteous

  1088. judgment

  1089. will be

  1090. revealed

  1091. don't

  1092. take

  1093. God's

  1094. delay

  1095. as

  1096. license

  1097. to do

  1098. what you

  1099. want

  1100. don't

  1101. take it

  1102. for granted

  1103. don't

  1104. think that

  1105. you're

  1106. getting

  1107. away

  1108. with

  1109. it

  1110. you're

  1111. storing

  1112. up

  1113. wrath

  1114. for the

  1115. day

  1116. of

  1117. God's

  1118. judgment

  1119. he

  1120. will

  1121. have

  1122. his

  1123. day

  1124. he

  1125. will

  1126. have

  1127. his

  1128. day

  1129. but

  1130. he

  1131. intends

  1132. and desires

  1133. for you

  1134. and I

  1135. to come

  1136. to gracious

  1137. repentance

  1138. we find

  1139. in verses

  1140. 32

  1141. and 33

  1142. that

  1143. God's

  1144. promises

  1145. are carried

  1146. out

  1147. completely

  1148. not only

  1149. immediately

  1150. but they're

  1151. carried out

  1152. completely

  1153. we see

  1154. this here

  1155. you shall

  1156. be driven

  1157. from among

  1158. men

  1159. your dwelling

  1160. shall be

  1161. with the

  1162. beasts

  1163. of the

  1164. field

  1165. you shall

  1166. be made

  1167. to eat

  1168. grass

  1169. like an

  1170. ox

  1171. and

  1172. seven

  1173. periods

  1174. of time

  1175. shall

  1176. pass

  1177. over

  1178. you

  1179. until

  1180. you

  1181. know

  1182. that

  1183. the

  1184. most

  1185. high

  1186. rules

  1187. the

  1188. kingdom

  1189. of man

  1190. and gives

  1191. it to

  1192. whom

  1193. he

  1194. will

  1195. immediately

  1196. the word

  1197. was fulfilled

  1198. against

  1199. Nebuchadnezzar

  1200. he was

  1201. driven

  1202. from among

  1203. men

  1204. and ate

  1205. grass

  1206. like an

  1207. ox

  1208. his body

  1209. was wet

  1210. with dew

  1211. of heaven

  1212. till his

  1213. hair grew

  1214. as long

  1215. as eagles

  1216. feathers

  1217. and his

  1218. nails

  1219. were like

  1220. birds

  1221. claws

  1222. these

  1223. verses

  1224. describe

  1225. the

  1226. unthinkable

  1227. the king

  1228. proud in

  1229. the moment

  1230. is humbled

  1231. to almost

  1232. inhuman

  1233. ways

  1234. extents

  1235. he is

  1236. literally

  1237. has lost

  1238. his mind

  1239. as Nebuchadnezzar

  1240. will testify

  1241. himself

  1242. in verse

  1243. 34 and 36

  1244. speaking about

  1245. his reason

  1246. returning to

  1247. him

  1248. now he is

  1249. absolutely

  1250. mad

  1251. he's insane

  1252. but before

  1253. you say

  1254. this

  1255. is impossible

  1256. even in

  1257. recent

  1258. days

  1259. there have

  1260. been

  1261. situations

  1262. examples

  1263. of people

  1264. who are

  1265. experiencing

  1266. something called

  1267. lycanthropy

  1268. which being

  1269. wolf life

  1270. that's where

  1271. it originated

  1272. but now

  1273. there's a term

  1274. that is used

  1275. to encompass

  1276. anybody

  1277. who would

  1278. act like

  1279. an animal

  1280. gerbil

  1281. a cat

  1282. a dog

  1283. a cow

  1284. an ox

  1285. so that

  1286. in 1946

  1287. this theologian

  1288. R.K. Harrison

  1289. witnessed

  1290. a British man

  1291. in a mental

  1292. institution

  1293. with an illness

  1294. that was virtually

  1295. identical

  1296. to what we find

  1297. in

  1298. Daniel chapter 4

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  1299. the patient

  1300. wandered about

  1301. the grounds

  1302. of the institution

  1303. eating grass

  1304. as if he were

  1305. a cow

  1306. his drink

  1307. consisted of

  1308. water

  1309. Harrison stated

  1310. that the only

  1311. physical abnormality

  1312. that was noted

  1313. consisted of

  1314. a lengthening

  1315. of his hair

  1316. and a coarse

  1317. thickened

  1318. condition

  1319. of his fingernails

  1320. this must have

  1321. been a stunning

  1322. transition

  1323. the genius

  1324. of Babylon

  1325. humbled

  1326. to this

  1327. level

  1328. and the person

  1329. who is responsible

  1330. for making the decision

  1331. to turn him

  1332. out of the castle

  1333. out of the palace

  1334. to wander

  1335. the palace

  1336. grounds

  1337. but this is

  1338. what we read

  1339. we find

  1340. that he was

  1341. driven

  1342. from men

  1343. his dwelling

  1344. was with the

  1345. beasts of the fields

  1346. his diet

  1347. was of grass

  1348. and the extent

  1349. of his condition

  1350. lasted for seven

  1351. periods of time

  1352. which I think

  1353. is best

  1354. assumed

  1355. to be seven

  1356. years

  1357. that Nebuchadnezzar

  1358. experienced

  1359. this condition

  1360. it's the most

  1361. consistent

  1362. with what we find

  1363. of this word

  1364. used throughout

  1365. the book

  1366. of Daniel

  1367. but here's

  1368. the comfort

  1369. here's the

  1370. encouragement

  1371. this was not

  1372. the end

  1373. this was not

  1374. the destination

  1375. this was not

  1376. the final

  1377. objective

  1378. this was just

  1379. a pathway

  1380. to get to that

  1381. final objective

  1382. it wasn't

  1383. to bring

  1384. Nebuchadnezzar

  1385. down and leave

  1386. him there

  1387. it was

  1388. it was to use

  1389. humility

  1390. or humiliation

  1391. to lead to

  1392. restoration

  1393. and that's

  1394. the second

  1395. part of this

  1396. promise

  1397. God's promise

  1398. to restore

  1399. the king

  1400. is fulfilled

  1401. God's promise

  1402. to restore

  1403. the king

  1404. notice in verse 32

  1405. the second half

  1406. you shall be

  1407. made to eat grass

  1408. like an ox

  1409. in seven periods

  1410. of time

  1411. shall pass over

  1412. you until

  1413. you know

  1414. that the most

  1415. high rules

  1416. the kingdom

  1417. of men

  1418. and gives it

  1419. to whom

  1420. he wills

  1421. when you come

  1422. to your senses

  1423. when this time

  1424. is completed

  1425. when it's run

  1426. its course

  1427. the objective

  1428. will finally

  1429. be accomplished

  1430. and that is not

  1431. humiliation

  1432. but restoration

  1433. and exaltation

  1434. in verse 26

  1435. it was

  1436. commanded

  1437. to leave the stump

  1438. and the roots

  1439. of the tree

  1440. your kingdom

  1441. shall be confirmed

  1442. for you

  1443. from the time

  1444. that you know

  1445. that heaven

  1446. rules

  1447. Nebuchadnezzar

  1448. when this

  1449. has run

  1450. its course

  1451. when humility

  1452. has served

  1453. its purpose

  1454. you will finally

  1455. come to the place

  1456. of recognizing

  1457. where you belong

  1458. in the structure

  1459. of the universe

  1460. and who you

  1461. answer to

  1462. humility

  1463. will have

  1464. its way

  1465. and finally

  1466. after seven years

  1467. of grazing

  1468. of living

  1469. with the beast

  1470. of allowing the dew

  1471. to come and go

  1472. on him

  1473. of never cutting

  1474. his hair

  1475. or trimming

  1476. his nails

  1477. now finally

  1478. in the midst

  1479. of darkness

  1480. light will dawn

  1481. for Nebuchadnezzar

  1482. notice verse 34

1483. at the end of days

  1484. I Nebuchadnezzar

  1485. lifted my eyes

  1486. to heaven

  1487. and by the way

  1488. that last song

  1489. that we sang

  1490. talked about

  1491. lifting our eyes

  1492. to heaven

  1493. how fitting it is

  1494. because that's what

  1495. we need to do

  1496. we need to come

  1497. to the place

  1498. of recognizing

  1499. who God is

  1500. humble yourself

  1501. before the mighty

  1502. hand of God

  1503. so that he can

  1504. exalt you

  1505. that exaltation

  1506. comes primarily

  1507. through belonging

  1508. to Christ

  1509. and seeing him

  1510. for who he is

  1511. Nebuchadnezzar

  1512. is finally there

  1513. the lesson

  1514. has finally been learned

  1515. Nebuchadnezzar

  1516. lifts his eyes

  1517. to heaven

  1518. and God

  1519. graciously

  1520. restores

  1521. his reason

  1522. his reason

  1523. returned

  1524. to him

  1525. throughout the book

  1526. of Daniel

  1527. this has been

  1528. kind of a resounding

  1529. theme

  1530. this word

  1531. reason

  1532. or wisdom

  1533. or knowledge

  1534. or understanding

  1535. it's echoed

  1536. throughout the

  1537. the accounts

  1538. of this chapter

  1539. or these chapters

  1540. this book

  1541. so that there are

  1542. 52 times

  1543. 50

  1544. actually 55 times

  1545. that this word

  1546. these words

  1547. are used

  1548. throughout the book

  1549. of Daniel

  1550. and now finally

  1551. the pursuit

  1552. of Nebuchadnezzar

  1553. in wanting

  1554. to find wisdom

  1555. for himself

  1556. now he finally

  1557. has experienced it

  1558. he's finally come

  1559. to know what

  1560. true wisdom is

  1561. wisdom that has led

  1562. I believe

  1563. to a changed heart

  1564. the right posture

  1565. before God

  1566. he's finally come

  1567. to a place

  1568. of experiencing

  1569. and knowing

  1570. true wisdom

  1571. and when

  1572. he experiences

  1573. this true wisdom

  1574. what is the response

  1575. what does true wisdom

  1576. true salvation

  1577. as it were

  1578. a true understanding

  1579. of who God is

1580. what should it lead us

  1581. to every single time

  1582. what is the reflex

  1583. what is the impulse

  1584. it's always

  1585. worship

  1586. it's always worship

1587. and that's what we find

  1588. in verse 34

1589. at the end of the days

  1590. I Nebuchadnezzar

  1591. lifted my eyes

  1592. to heaven

  1593. my reason

  1594. returned to me

  1595. and I blessed

  1596. the most high

  1597. and praised

  1598. and honored him

  1599. who lives forever

  1600. for his dominion

  1601. is an everlasting dominion

  1602. his kingdom

  1603. endures from generation

  1604. to generation

  1605. all the inhabitants

  1606. of the earth

  1607. are accounted

  1608. as nothing

  1609. and he does

  1610. according to his will

  1611. among the hosts

  1612. of heaven

  1613. and among the inhabitants

  1614. of the earth

  1615. and none can stay

  1616. his hand

  1617. or say to him

  1618. what have you

  1619. done

  1620. the words

  1621. that are used

  1622. here in verse 34

1623. and also in verses 36

  1624. and 37

  1625. he praised

  1626. and honored

  1627. and glorified

  1628. these are words

  1629. that describe

  1630. this continual

  1631. response

  1632. of the king

  1633. it wasn't a one time

  1634. moment

  1635. it wasn't a flash

  1636. in the pan

  1637. it becomes

  1638. this ongoing

  1639. expression

  1640. of his heart

  1641. and what's really

  1642. spectacular

  1643. about all of this

  1644. is

1645. in spite of the shame

  1646. that this kind

  1647. of situation

  1648. would bring

  1649. Nebuchadnezzar

  1650. is shouting it

  1651. to the world

  1652. we see that

  1653. at the beginning

  1654. of this

  1655. to all peoples

  1656. nations

  1657. languages

  1658. I'm not ashamed

  1659. to let you know

1660. what God had to do

  1661. for me

  1662. to finally bring me

  1663. to recognition

  1664. of who he was

  1665. he's finally at a place

  1666. where his heart

  1667. is ready

  1668. to worship

  1669. and notice

  1670. these final verses

  1671. in 36 and 37

  1672. are telling

  1673. at the same time

  1674. my reason

  1675. returned to me

  1676. and for the glory

  1677. of my kingdom

  1678. my majesty

  1679. and splendor

  1680. returned to me

  1681. my counselors

  1682. and my lord

  1683. sought me

  1684. I was established

  1685. in my kingdom

  1686. and still more

  1687. greatness

  1688. was added

  1689. to me

  1690. you would think

  1691. that he could stop

  1692. right there

  1693. and the story

  1694. would be done

  1695. but this is just

  1696. an introduction

  1697. to the main point

  1698. all of these things

  1699. all of these things

  1700. I celebrated

  1701. they're not just

  1702. restored to me

  1703. they're better

  1704. than they have

  1705. ever been

  1706. but my

  1707. perspective

  1708. has changed

  1709. I have all

  1710. those things

  1711. now

  1712. but the thing

  1713. that really

  1714. matters to me

  1715. is what he says

  1716. as a result

  1717. of that restoration

  1718. now in verse 37

  1719. notice

  1720. I have those things

  1721. back but

  1722. now I

  1723. Nebuchadnezzar

  1724. praise and extol

  1725. and honor the king

  1726. of heaven

  1727. for all his works

  1728. are right

  1729. and his ways

  1730. are just

  1731. and those who walk

  1732. in pride

  1733. he is able

  1734. to humble

1735. I got all my stuff

  1736. back

  1737. but what really

  1738. matters to me

  1739. is this revelation

  1740. of wisdom

  1741. of God

  1742. and who

  1743. he really is

  1744. and all I can

  1745. think about

  1746. is celebrating

  1747. and worshiping

  1748. him

  1749. not me

  1750. that's how we know

  1751. that Nebuchadnezzar's

  1752. heart is truly changed

  1753. that by the way

  1754. is how we

  1755. know for ourselves

  1756. how our heart

  1757. has truly changed

  1758. we know

  1759. that our heart

  1760. has changed

  1761. away from the world

  1762. and towards

  1763. the Lord

  1764. in a sincere

  1765. way

  1766. when we come

  1767. to the place

  1768. of recognizing

  1769. that even in good

  1770. and in times

  1771. of plenty

  1772. but then in times

  1773. of lack

  1774. and in times

  1775. of being

  1776. hungry

  1777. and going

  1778. through difficulty

  1779. regardless

  1780. of all of those

  1781. things

  1782. my heart

  1783. is steady

  1784. my heart

  1785. is secure

  1786. I can trust

  1787. and praise

  1788. the God of heaven

  1789. he's in control

  1790. and my life

  1791. is pointing

  1792. to him

  1793. because he

  1794. alone

  1795. is glorious

  1796. this is really

  1797. what we

  1798. come to understand

  1799. from the parting

  1800. words of the

  1801. apostle Paul

  1802. to the church

  1803. of Philippi

  1804. in Philippians

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  1805. chapter 4

  1806. 10

  1807. through 13

  1808. I've rejoiced

  1809. in the Lord

  1810. greatly

  1811. that now

  1812. at last

  1813. your care

  1814. for me

  1815. has flourished

  1816. and by the way

  1817. your care

  1818. for me

  1819. has flourished

  1820. the apostle

  1821. Paul

  1822. is in

  1823. a prison

  1824. cell

  1825. a stinking

  1826. rotten

  1827. cold

  1828. prison

  1829. cell

  1830. and

  1831. do you get

  1832. any sense

  1833. of that

  1834. from these

  1835. words

  1836. he says

  1837. your care

  1838. for me

  1839. has flourished

  1840. though you

  1841. surely did

  1842. care

  1843. but you

  1844. lacked

  1845. opportunity

  1846. not that I

  1847. speak

  1848. in regard

  1849. to need

  1850. for I have

  1851. learned

  1852. in whatever

  1853. state I am

  1854. to be content

  1855. I know

  1856. how to be

  1857. abased

  1858. I know

  1859. how to

  1860. abound

  1861. everywhere

  1862. and in all

  1863. things

  1864. I have

  1865. learned

  1866. both

  1867. to be

  1868. full

  1869. and to

  1870. be

  1871. hungry

  1872. both

  1873. to abound

  1874. and to

  1875. suffer

  1876. need

  1877. I

  1878. can do

  1879. all things

  1880. through Christ

  1881. who strengthens

  1882. me

  1883. that

  1884. is the heart

  1885. of a changed

  1886. person

  1887. that is a

  1888. heart

  1889. of a true

  1890. worshiper

  1891. that is a

  1892. heart

  1893. of a person

  1894. who really

  1895. has come

  1896. to a place

  1897. of recognizing

  1898. wisdom

  1899. spiritual

  1900. wisdom

  1901. that leads

  1902. them

  1903. to spiritual

  1904. worship

  1905. understanding

  1906. their posture

  1907. before the

  1908. Lord

  1909. not striving

  1910. not settling

  1911. but

  1912. confident

  1913. insecure

  1914. in what

  1915. Christ has

  1916. accomplished

  1917. welcoming

  1918. whatever it

  1919. takes

  1920. the humiliation

  1921. that is

  1922. required at

  1923. times to

  1924. lead us

  1925. to new

  1926. discoveries

  1927. of who

  1928. he is

  1929. this

  1930. exaltation

  1931. that God

  1932. desires to

  1933. accomplish

  1934. for all of

  1935. us

  1936. this restoration

  1937. process

  1938. that sometimes

  1939. and maybe I

  1940. should say

  1941. always

  1942. requires some

  1943. measure

  1944. of pain

  1945. so that we

  1946. can see

  1947. that he

  1948. is worth

  1949. it

  1950. he's

  1951. enough

  1952. he is

  1953. all that

  1954. you need

  1955. may God

  1956. help us

  1957. as those

  1958. who have

  1959. enjoyed

  1960. the benefits

  1961. of this

  1962. grace

  1963. that Nebuchadnezzar

  1964. I believe

  1965. is seeing

  1966. and experiencing

  1967. here

  1968. that our

  1969. hearts

  1970. would be

  1971. just as

  1972. full

  1973. and erupt

  1974. with praise

  1975. wherever we

  1976. go

  1977. that our

  1978. lives would

  1979. redound

  1980. to the glory

  1981. of God

  1982. may God

  1983. help us

  1984. regardless

  1985. of the

  1986. situation

  1987. you're in

  1988. to point

  1989. your heart

  1990. to point

  1991. your life

  1992. to point

  1993. your praise

  1994. towards him

  1995. oh God

  1996. thank you

  1997. for

  1998. this testimony

  1999. of what

  2000. we might

  2001. think is

  2002. an impossible

  2003. work

  2004. how is it

  2005. possible

  2006. that a

  2007. pagan

  2008. king

  2009. who has

  2010. all the

  2011. wealth

  2012. of the

  2013. known world

  2014. at his

  2015. disposal

  2016. how could

  2017. you

  2018. possibly

  2019. catch

  2020. his

  2021. heart

  2022. and turn

  2023. him to

  2024. you

  2025. but you

  2026. did

  2027. thank you

  2028. for this

  2029. lesson

  2030. and for

  2031. using

  2032. Daniel

  2033. in his

  2034. ministry

  2035. to

  2036. Nebuchadnezzar

  2037. to be

  2038. used as a

  2039. catalyst

  2040. to come

  2041. to this

  2042. outcome

  2043. Lord I pray

  2044. that you

  2045. would use

  2046. all of us

  2047. that we

  2048. would be

  2049. useful

  2050. agents

  2051. of you

  2052. not only

  2053. to bend

  2054. our heart

  2055. towards you

  2056. in humility

  2057. and to

  2058. experience

  2059. the joy

  2060. of relationship

  2061. with you

  2062. but to do

  2063. what it

  2064. takes

  2065. in our

  2066. workplaces

  2067. in our

  2068. communities

  2069. in our

  2070. homes

  2071. to draw

  2072. attention

  2073. to you

  2074. and to be

  2075. useful

  2076. as a

  2077. catalyst

  2078. to bring

  2079. others

  2080. to saving

  2081. knowledge

  2082. of you

  2083. as well

  2084. we pray

  2085. these things

  2086. in your

  2087. name

  2088. amen

  2089. God bless

  2090. you

  2091. hope you

  2092. have a

  2093. great

  2094. week
