  1. We're making our way through. This is the last sermon in our series of the life of Daniel,

  2. in Daniel chapter 6. But the next couple of weeks, we're going to still be in Daniel, kind of bringing

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  3. things together for us in Daniel chapter 7, kind of looking at the broad theme of this kingdom,

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  4. this eternal kingdom of God that kind of finds its way, kind of crystallizes and summarizes itself

  5. for us there in Daniel chapter 7, where the Ancient of Days is entrusting the kingdom to the Son of

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  6. Man. And of course, we know who the Son of Man is, who Jesus Christ, who kind of embraced that identity

  7. and kind of wore that for himself during the Gospels. And so we're going to see this eternal

  8. kingdom coming to us in Daniel chapter 7. And then Bill Williamson will be able to teach through

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  9. Daniel chapter 9, kind of the prayer that's there in a couple of weeks. We want to give you one last

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  10. glimpse at the life of prayer in the person of Daniel. And it is impactful. I would encourage you,

  11. of course, to be here. Turn with me, if you would, to Daniel chapter 6. If you're using the Pew Bible,

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  12. it's on page 743. For those of you who have not been here in our series, I want to just kind of

  13. try to catch you up to where we are. We're in the second half of Daniel chapter 6. And the chapter

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  14. kind of starts this way, kind of moving even back to Daniel chapter 5, verse 30 and 31. It says,

    Daniel 5:30

  15. that very night, Belshazzar, the Chaldean king, was killed. And Darius the Mede received the kingdom,

  16. being about 62 years old. Now verse 1 of chapter 6. It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom 120

  17. set traps to be throughout the whole kingdom. Now this theme that we're going to pick up again

  18. next week is to kind of trace these subsequent kingdoms, the rise and the fall of empires, this

  19. Babylonian empire, Babylonian kingdom, and now the rise of this Persian kingdom.

  20. Kingdoms will come and go. Kings will come and go. But what we're going to see and what we have seen

  21. in Daniel chapter 6 is that God's kingdom remains. It's God who is instrumental in raising up kings

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  22. and putting kings down. And it's God's servant, Daniel, who remains steady. This fixture of constant,

  23. this constant fixture that has been since the beginning of Daniel and we'll now, we'll see in Daniel chapter 6,

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  24. as a testimony to the enduring quality of God's kingdom. Daniel will be promoted again. As we saw last week,

  25. he's now the chief official over all of the officials over the entire kingdom of Media Persia.

  26. We saw that while he was a gifted individual, it wasn't because of his networking ability.

  27. It wasn't because of his LinkedIn account, pulling the right strings, positioning himself in the right way,

  28. jockeying for position, kind of edging people out because of his skill and authority and his ability

  29. to position himself. What Daniel does so consistently is he devotes himself to God.

  30. The thing that has amazed me and has been an encouragement to me throughout the testimony of this book

  31. is the absolute commitment of Daniel to trust in God regardless of the shake-up and uncertainty of situations.

  32. Daniel was steady. Daniel was fixed. Daniel was devoted.

  33. His character. We see the testimony of his character even last week, but then pushing into chapter 5,

  34. where we find in verse 11 of chapter 5, the spirit of the gods was in him.

  35. He is light and understanding like the wisdom of the gods.

  36. Then in verse 12, an excellent spirit was in him.

  37. Then again in chapter 6, we find in chapter 6 verse 3,

  38. He was distinguished from the others. Why?

  39. Well, because an excellent spirit was in him.

  40. And when the other officials who were jockeying for position,

  41. trying to find a way to ruin Daniel,

  42. they go on this examination process and they, what do they find in verse 4?

  43. They could find no ground for complaint or any fault because he was faithful.

  44. No error or fault was found in him.

  45. We come to understand that it's God who continues to promote Daniel to his position.

  46. It's God who puts kings down.

  47. It's God who raises his servants up.

  48. It's God who keeps putting and pushing Daniel into the forefront.

  49. It's what we find in 1 Peter chapter 5.

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  50. It's the way in which God works with his servants.

  51. Beginning in verse 5, it says,

  52. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility towards one another.

  53. For God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

  54. So humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God,

  55. so that at the proper time he may exalt you.

  56. We saw last week, and we'll see this again this morning,

  57. that it was Daniel's humility and Daniel's faithfulness that positioned him for usefulness.

  58. You see, God delights in using humble, faithful servants.

  59. And God understands that his humble, faithful servants are useful.

  60. They're useful to wait for God's timing.

  61. They're useful to point to who God is, not to draw attention to themselves.

  62. And that's what's happening through this entire book of the life of Daniel,

  63. that Daniel keeps showcasing and spotlighting the work of God in his life,

  64. not drawing attention to himself.

  65. But this, of course, makes all of the officials in this new kingdom really upset.

  66. Why does this foreigner keep getting pushed to the forefront?

  67. Why is this exile from Judea in charge of everything?

  68. So these officials concoct a plan.

  69. They devised this plan of, after putting Daniel's life under the microscope,

  70. they're unable to find anything to ruin him.

  71. Instead, what they need to do is they need to use his faithfulness against him.

  72. They essentially weaponize Daniel's faith and devotion to God

  73. and seek to use that as an instrument to destroy him.

  74. They've come up with this plan.

  75. They're going to invite and pray on the pride and the seeming logic of King Darius

  76. and convince him that he needs to kind of pull in the loyalties of his kingdom

  77. and have all of those subjects in his kingdom pray to him.

  78. So the king agrees.

  79. He signs this decree.

  80. And without realizing it, he signs Daniel's fate.

  81. The consequence of which was to cast Daniel into the lion's den,

  82. which we'll look at in more detail this morning.

  83. Daniel hears this decree and immediately goes to his house.

  84. He immediately goes up to his roof.

  85. He opens the window of his lattice.

  86. He directs his focus to Jerusalem, to where the temple would have been,

  87. where the God of Israel and his presence was most fully realized.

  88. And he prays to the God of Israel.

  89. Of course, he's caught in the act, as it were,

  90. and the accusation is brought before the king.

  91. And the king, in anguish, labors to deliver Daniel.

  92. Deliverance will be our key theme, our key word throughout this passage.

  93. We're going to see this on several occasions.

  94. And just at the beginning of the onset of this study,

  95. just underline for me the words that we find in this section,

  96. beginning in verse 14, this word deliver.

  97. In verse 14 it says,

  98. And the king set his heart to deliver Daniel.

  99. That's our word.

  100. Then in verse 16,

  101. Then the king declared to Daniel,

  102. May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you.

  103. Then in verse 20,

  104. The king declared to Daniel,

  105. O Daniel, servant of the living God,

  106. has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you?

  107. Then finally in verse 27,

  108. Speaking of God,

  109. For he delivers and rescues.

  110. He works signs and wonders in heaven and on earth.

  111. He who has saved Daniel from the power of the lions.

  112. Spoiler alert,

  113. God saves Daniel from the lion's den.

  114. But why?

  115. Why would God put Daniel through the paces, as it were?

  116. Why would God introduce this trial, this trouble, to Daniel's life?

  117. What the enemies of Daniel sought to do to ruin Daniel,

  118. becomes an instrument of God to push God forward as the one who can deliver.

  119. In other words, God uses Daniel's trials to draw attention to God's triumph.

  120. God uses Daniel's trials to draw attention to God's triumph.

  121. What is God using in your life this morning?

  122. What trials, what troubles, what difficulties, what pains are you working through,

  123. even in this moment?

  124. What challenges are you experiencing in the here and now?

  125. Recognize that God wants to use those challenges, those trials, those tribulations,

  126. so that you can show and draw attention to God's power.

  127. God wants you to maximize your trials to draw attention to God's triumph.

  128. That's what God does through trials.

  129. And by the way, it is a joy for us.

  130. It should be a joy for us in the midst of those trials to recognize it as an opportunity

  131. and say, oh God, please help me to be faithful with this trial to draw attention to you.

  132. And that's exactly what Daniel does.

  133. Daniel faithfully devotes himself to God in and through this passage

  134. and in and through this book of Daniel.

  135. There seems to be this steady heart that is so at ease and at rest in understanding

  136. that God is in control of all the circumstances of life in time, in time, in time again.

  137. God uses those trials to draw attention to his triumph.

  138. And God wants to do the same for you.

  139. God wants to do and accomplish the same purposes for his people today.

  140. God wants to do the same for you.

  141. God wants to do the same for you.

  142. There's a famous pastor from the 1800s.

  143. His name is D.L. Moody.

  144. And D.L. Moody got on board of this ship in London and he was on his way to New York.

  145. And at some point along the way, the drive shaft of this ship broke

  146. and it created a hole in the hull of the ship.

  147. So the ship begins to sink.

  148. And D.L. Moody describes this experience in this way when he says,

  149. The officers and crew did all they could to save the vessel,

  150. but it was soon found that the pumps were useless,

  151. for the water poured into the ship too rapidly to be controlled.

  152. There was nothing more in the power of man to do,

  153. and the ship was absolutely helpless.

  154. While the passengers could only stand still on the poor, drifting, sinking ship

  155. and look into our possible watery graves.

  156. It, of course, was a desperate situation.

  157. After several more days, the ship continued to experience increasing damage.

  158. And D.L. Moody entered in what he called the darkest hour of his life.

  159. He describes it this way when he says,

  160. I could not endure it.

  161. And imagine yourself in this situation.

  162. I must have relief, he says.

  163. And relief came in prayer.

  164. God heard my cry and enabled me to say,

  165. From the depths of my soul,

  166. Thy will be done.

  167. Sweet peace came to my heart.

  168. Let it be north field or heaven, he said.

  169. It made no difference now.

  170. I went to bed.

  171. I fell asleep almost immediately

  172. and never slept more soundly in all my life.

  173. Of course, God also rescued D.L. Moody

  174. and being able to bring him back to shore.

  175. But there was rescue, real rescue,

  176. that happened in the moment before physical rescue ever came.

  177. It was rescue of understanding that God was sovereign,

  178. even in the trial.

  179. God wants to accomplish the same for us.

  180. God wants us to recognize there is deliverance that can come.

  181. Sometimes that deliverance comes from those trials.

  182. Sometimes that deliverance happens through those trials.

  183. Do we believe that in every situation that God is introducing into our life,

  184. that God intends to maximize those trials for the purpose of drawing attention to him

  185. and through us to call attention to a God who saves,

  186. a God who delivers.

  187. So if you're not there with me already,

  188. turn to Daniel chapter 6.

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  189. We're going to be picking the story up in verse 14.

  190. And we're going to see this contrast that will happen.

  191. The power of men versus the power of God.

  192. And it has been this picture that has been at the front of our story,

  193. the front of this narrative from Daniel chapter 1 to Daniel chapter 6,

Daniel 1 chapter mention Daniel 6 chapter mention

  194. from the very beginning.

  195. Who is really the one who's in power?

  196. Who's really the supreme authority?

  197. Our first point this morning is the power of man will fail.

  198. The power of man will fail.

  199. Make sure that when you're trusting in power,

  200. you trust in the power of God, not the power of man,

  201. because the power of man will fail.

  202. Notice verse 14.

  203. Then the king, when he heard these words,

  204. and by the way, the words were that Daniel has just been praying,

  205. not to you, but to his God.

  206. And so he hears these words,

  207. and he was much distressed.

  208. He set his mind to deliver Daniel.

  209. And he labored till the sun went down to rescue him.

  210. Then these men came by agreement to the king and said to the king,

  211. Know, O king, that it is the law of the Medes and the Persians,

  212. that no injunction or ordinance that the king establishes can be changed.

  213. The power of man will fail.

  214. And here we find the king's desperate attempt to deliver Daniel.

  215. The king is desperate to deliver Daniel.

  216. We find these words.

  217. He's much distressed.

  218. There was some level of commitment,

  219. some level of partnership,

  220. some level of investment and allegiance,

  221. even before, even between these two men,

  222. some relationship that these two guys had,

  223. and a dependence that Darius had on Daniel.

  224. And he understood how significant this would be.

  225. So he was much distressed.

  226. And it says he labored,

  227. which literally means he set his heart.

  228. I think our translation says he set his mind.

  229. He was emotionally involved.

  230. This word deliver, of course,

  231. will become a key word for us in the remaining parts of this chapter.

  232. And this would have been a whirlwind day for Darius.

  233. Sometime in the morning,

  234. he is signing this decree.

  235. He's thinking he's going to be able to put

  236. all of his kingdom back together

  237. and establish loyalty and allegiance.

  238. All the while,

  239. his officials were actually gunning to manipulate him.

  240. Daniel would go,

  241. and he would go home to pray.

  242. He's caught.

  243. And now,

  244. Darius' number one official

  245. is going to go to the lion's den.

  246. And so the king is trying to fix the mess

  247. that he's created.

  248. He's frustrated.

  249. He's emotional.

  250. He's desperate.

  251. No doubt he throws every resource of his power

  252. into the mix

  253. to undo this situation that he's created for himself.

  254. Darius, king of Babylon,

  255. now comes face to face with the restriction of his power.

  256. He comes face to face with the boundaries of his authority.

  257. He comes to a place of recognizing

  258. how desperate he is

  259. to actually bring any deliverance to Daniel.

  260. In verse 16,

  261. we find the king's desperate hope for deliverance.

  262. His desperate hope for deliverance.

  263. Notice,

  264. Then the king commanded,

  265. and Daniel was brought and cast into the lion's den.

  266. And the king declared to Daniel,

  267. May your God,

  268. whom you serve continually,

  269. deliver you.

  270. This word for den is the word for pit.

  271. It's another use of the word for a cistern or to dig.

  272. It's similar to the word that was used

  273. for the brothers of Joseph

  274. when they threw him into the pit.

  275. It's a similar word for us,

  276. the difference between the Hebrew and the Aramaic.

  277. Accounts of the Persians executing their victims

  278. in such a manner is recorded in history.

  279. And while the descriptions of the den

  280. aren't given to us in detail here in Daniel,

  281. we do find in archaeology

  282. in parts of the world in that day

  283. that these lion's dens

  284. would have been like large caverns.

  285. In our family,

  286. when we visited Idaho,

  287. we went to some natural caverns

  288. that were created.

  289. This would have been like a large square cavern

  290. under the earth.

  291. It would have had like a partition in the wall.

  292. This particular one that was found in Morocco

  293. had a partition in the wall

  294. so that the lions could move

  295. from one side to the other

  296. and you could kind of close things off

  297. and access the one side and clean it

  298. while the lions were in the other side.

  299. Then it would have a hole in the top.

  300. You could kind of peer down

  301. and watch the activities

  302. that were taking place below,

  303. making sure the execution was going

  304. according to plan.

  305. The lions and everyone would come

  306. into the opening of this cave

  307. and there would be a rock

  308. that would be over the mouth

  309. of that opening.

  310. Probably similar to what we find here

  311. in our passage.

  312. This was a cistern that is filled with lions.

  313. They would intentionally starve these lions

  314. so the victims would be unable to escape.

  315. So these are not a few sleepy,

  316. lethargic old lions that we're talking about

  317. as some skeptics have assumed.

  318. But we get a sense of the size

  319. and the strength

  320. and the sheer power of these lions

  321. when we look at verse 24.

  322. It says,

  323. This is the same den,

  324. the same group of lions,

  325. the same power that was represented here

  326. in verse 24

  327. is the same power that was available

  328. earlier in the chapter.

  329. Darius, of course, is concerned.

  330. He has a reason to be concerned.

  331. And God has used this situation

  332. to call attention

  333. to God's wonder-working power.

  334. The miraculous display of God's power

  335. is now brought out into the open.

  336. Darius is forced to recognize

  337. the limitations of his power.

  338. He's been confronted with the limitations

  339. of his wisdom and his foresight.

  340. He has been forced to see

  341. how prone he is to manipulation.

  342. And he knows that everything right now

  343. is totally out of his control.

  344. So Darius offers some semblance

  345. and what I find intriguing about this

  346. is that Darius will offer

  347. a semblance of a prayer in hope,

  348. this prayer of desperation,

  349. this long-shot prayer as it were,

  350. because every other option is expended.

  351. What I find fascinating

  352. is that in this 30-day window

  353. where all petitions and prayers

  354. were to come to Darius,

  355. now what we kind of see here

  356. is that now Darius

  357. is kind of offering a prayer

  358. to Daniel's God

  359. through the mediation of Daniel

  360. where he says,

  361. may your God,

  362. whom you serve continually,

  363. deliver you.

  364. It's a mighty prayer

  365. full of theology.

  366. I broke this down

  367. just in a few pieces

  368. to briefly walk you through

  369. how powerful this prayer is.

  370. He begins with,

  371. your God.

  372. These words in the Aramaic

  373. are in construct relationship

  374. and basically all that means

  375. is two words in the English

  376. that are joined together

  377. and become one word

  378. in the Aramaic.

  379. Your God.

  380. Darius observed

  381. the inseparable nature,

  382. inseparable quality

  383. of Daniel's relationship with God.

  384. Your God belongs to you, Daniel.

  385. and you belong to your God.

  386. This inseparable quality

  387. of this relationship

  388. that is so personal,

  389. that is so marked

  390. by affection.

  391. Daniel's affection for God

  392. and God's affection for him

  393. so that Darius even comes

  394. to describe God in these terms.

  395. He's not just the God of heaven.

  396. He's not just the most high God.

  397. He's not just the God of Israel.

  398. He's your God.

  399. The identity that is so intertwined

  400. and interlaced

  401. with Daniel himself,

  402. the servant,

  403. describing the love of God

  404. for Daniel.

  405. Then he says,

  406. whom you serve.

  407. And again,

  408. this is a word

  409. that is in a construct relationship.

  410. It describes this intensive,

  411. continual pattern of service

  412. that Daniel has for God.

  413. This continual expression

  414. of his life.

  415. It is this ever-present reality

  416. for him.

  417. You get this sense

  418. that nothing drives Daniel

  419. quite like his service

  420. to his God.

  421. Let's not forget

  422. that here in the book of Daniel

  423. and also throughout

  424. the Old Testament,

  425. we find that service

  426. and worship

  427. go hand in hand.

  428. These terms are synonymous.

  429. We saw this back

  430. in Daniel chapter 3

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  431. in verse 12

  432. where the accusers

  433. will say of Shadrach,

  434. Meshach,

  435. and Abednego,

  436. they say,

  437. they do not serve

  438. your gods

  439. or worship

  440. the golden image

  441. that you have set up.

  442. And then Nebuchadnezzar

  443. in verse 14

  444. will say,

  445. is it true

  446. that you do not serve

  447. my gods

  448. or worship

  449. the golden image

  450. that I have set up?

  451. And then in verse 18,

  452. Shadrach, Meshach,

  453. and Abednego

  454. will reply,

  455. be it known to you,

  456. O king,

  457. that we will not serve

  458. your gods

  459. or worship

  460. the golden image

  461. that you have set up.

  462. Darius understood

  463. the underlying reason

  464. for Daniel's disobedience.

  465. Darius has come

  466. to understand

  467. that Daniel

  468. is a man

  469. who is committed

  470. to one objective

  471. and that is

  472. service of God.

  473. This was not about

  474. defiance

  475. to a decree.

  476. This was not about

  477. disloyalty

  478. to the king.

  479. This was about

  480. allegiance

  481. to the God of Israel,

  482. to Daniel's God,

  483. serving him,

  484. worshiping him.

  485. Daniel's service

  486. and devotion

  487. and worship

  488. were undivided.

  489. They were uncompromised.

  490. They were unbroken,

  491. unwavering,

  492. and undeterred.

  493. His service

  494. and worship

  495. were continual

  496. and faithful

  497. and consistent.

  498. Then he ends with,

  499. may this God

  500. deliver you.

  501. Deliver you.

  502. Another construct

  503. relationship

  504. where the verb

  505. deliver

  506. is joined together

  507. with a pronoun

  508. you.

  509. Attached

  510. to convey

  511. the idea

  512. that God's power

  513. was inseparable

  514. with God's servant.

  515. Where he begins

  516. with your God.

  517. God's relationship,

  518. God's identity

  519. was intertwined

  520. with his servant

  521. Daniel

  522. and now

  523. the affection

  524. that God has

  525. for Daniel

  526. is met

  527. with the power

  528. of God

  529. that's going to be

  530. working out

  531. in Daniel

  532. so that

  533. in Darius' mind

  534. God's character

  535. was bound

  536. to the deliverance

  537. that God

  538. would provide

  539. to Daniel

  540. in the lion's den.

  541. It was a mighty

  542. prayer

  543. of desperation.

  544. but it was a prayer

  545. of sincerity.

  546. It wasn't a prayer

  547. of sincerity

  548. excuse me

  549. because Darius

  550. didn't know

  551. God's power.

  552. Darius didn't have

  553. this relationship

  554. with God

  555. which now turns

  556. to verse 17

  557. the king's

  558. desperate night

  559. of waiting.

  560. The king's

  561. desperate night

  562. of waiting.

  563. It says

  564. in a stone

  565. was brought

  566. and laid

  567. on the mouth

  568. of the den

  569. the king

  570. sealed it

  571. with his own

  572. signet

  573. and with the

  574. signet of his

  575. lords

  576. that nothing

  577. might be changed

  578. concerning Daniel.

  579. Then the king

  580. went to his palace

  581. and spent the night

  582. fasting.

  583. No diversions

  584. were brought to him

  585. and sleep

  586. fled from him.

  587. Then at the break

  588. of day

  589. the king arose

  590. and went in haste

  591. to the den of lions

  592. and he came near

  593. to the den

  594. where Daniel was.

  595. He cried out

  596. in a tone

  597. of anguish

  598. the king declared

  599. to Daniel

  600. O Daniel

  601. servant of the

  602. living God

  603. has your God

  604. whom you serve

  605. continually

  606. been able

  607. to deliver you

  608. from the lions?

  609. The king's

  610. desperate night

  611. of waiting

  612. Darius goes back

  613. to the palace

  614. and by the way

  615. all of this

  616. I believe

  617. is by design

  618. where God

  619. is putting Darius

  620. in a situation

  621. where he's helpless

  622. where he's come

  623. to the end

  624. of himself

  625. and now

  626. Darius

  627. is hoping

  628. beyond hope

  629. perhaps

  630. just maybe

  631. God will

  632. help to deliver

  633. his servant

  634. Daniel.

  635. All of this

  636. was by design.

  637. God

  638. bringing

  639. and emphasizing

  640. the king's

  641. futility

  642. and drawing

  643. attention

  644. to God's

  645. sufficiency.

  646. This has been

  647. a whirlwind day.

  648. Started with

  649. Darius feeling

  650. at the top

  651. of the world

  652. and now

  653. has ended

  654. with Darius

  655. understanding

  656. his desperate

  657. need

  658. for God

  659. himself.

  660. Now we're

  661. back in the

  662. palace

  663. and one thing

  664. on Darius'

  665. mind

  666. something in

  667. his heart

  668. believes

  669. that maybe

  670. just maybe

  671. God

  672. will save

  673. Daniel.

  674. Perhaps

  675. it was the

  676. strength of

  677. Daniel's

  678. conviction.

  679. Perhaps it was

  680. the record

  681. of Daniel's

  682. God

  683. or the writing

  684. on the wall

  685. and testimony

  686. of Daniel

  687. being able

  688. to deliver

  689. and interpret

  690. the words

  691. that were

  692. written on

  693. the wall.

  694. Maybe it was

  695. the public

  696. record of

  697. the fiery

  698. furnace

  699. or maybe

  700. the public

  701. proclamation

  702. from Nebuchadnezzar

  703. himself at the

  704. end of Daniel

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  705. chapter 4.

  706. Whatever it

  707. was,

  708. Darius'

  709. response

  710. indicates

  711. that there

  712. is this

  713. flicker

  714. of hope

  715. that maybe

  716. God

  717. will be

  718. able

  719. to save.

  720. But as

  721. the hours

  722. go by,

  723. the urgency

  724. of the situation

  725. is intensified.

  726. Darius

  727. spends the

  728. night fasting

  729. which is a

  730. way to

  731. represent his

  732. heart of sorrow,

  733. his heart of

  734. grief,

  735. his heart of

  736. urgency.

  737. He puts

  738. away his

  739. food,

  740. he puts

  741. away his

  742. entertainment,

  743. he's unable

  744. to sleep.

  745. And then

  746. at the

  747. earliest

  748. possible

  749. moment,

  750. what we

  751. find here

  752. in the

  753. text,

  754. at the

  755. break of

  756. day,

  757. at the

  758. instant

  759. the law

  760. has been

  761. fulfilled,

  762. this 62

  763. year old

  764. man is

  765. jetting across

  766. the palace,

  767. he's running

  768. across the

  769. city,

  770. he's going

  771. out to that

  772. den,

  773. he's got

  774. to know

  775. for himself,

  776. is Daniel

  777. okay?

  778. He calls

  779. out in a

  780. tone of

  781. anguish

  782. and notice,

  783. oh Daniel,

  784. servant of

  785. the living

  786. God,

  787. has your

  788. God,

  789. whom you

  790. serve

  791. continually,

  792. been able

  793. to deliver

  794. you from

  795. the lions?

  796. This

  797. identity of

  798. the living

  799. God that

  800. he expresses

  801. here is

  802. really uncommon

  803. in the Old

  804. Testament,

  805. but it's

  806. used twice

  807. here in

  808. Daniel chapter

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  809. 6.

  810. It's often

  811. associated in

  812. the Old

  813. Testament,

  814. as few

  815. of the

  816. times it's

  817. used,

  818. it's often

  819. associated

  820. with God's

  821. delivering

  822. power over

  823. the nations.

  824. Nebuchadnezzar

  825. will use a

  826. similar concept

  827. in Daniel

    Daniel 4:34

  828. chapter 4

  829. verse 34

  830. when he

  831. says,

  832. I bless

  833. the Most

  834. High and

  835. praise and

  836. honor him

  837. who lives

  838. forever.

  839. You see,

  840. God was a

  841. living God,

  842. not like

  843. the dead,

  844. lifeless

  845. gods of

  846. Babylon or

  847. Persia.

  848. It expresses

  849. this quality

  850. and nature

  851. of God,

  852. his presence,

  853. his activity,

  854. his involvement

  855. in the affairs

  856. of men,

  857. his engagement

  858. in the world

  859. and active

  860. in the lives

  861. of his

  862. servants.

  863. Both

  864. Nebuchadnezzar

  865. and Darius

  866. come to

  867. understand

  868. this identity

  869. of God

  870. as being

  871. powerful,

  872. accessible

  873. and present.

  874. But now

  875. we contrast

  876. the futility,

  877. the failure

  878. of man's

  879. power.

  880. Man's

  881. power will

  882. fail but

  883. God's power

  884. will flourish.

  885. That's what

  886. we find

  887. in verses

  888. 21 to

  889. 28.

  890. The power

  891. of God

  892. will flourish.

  893. Put your

  894. hope in

  895. the power

  896. of God.

  897. Notice

  898. in verse

  899. 21,

  900. Then Daniel

  901. said to the

  902. king,

  903. O king,

  904. live forever.

  905. my God

  906. has sent

  907. his angel

  908. and shut

  909. the lions'

  910. mouths

  911. and they

  912. have not

  913. harmed me

  914. because I

  915. was found

  916. blameless

  917. before him

  918. and also

  919. before you,

  920. O king,

  921. I have done

  922. no harm.

  923. God

  924. sends

  925. his angel

  926. to deliver

  927. Daniel.

  928. God

  929. sends

  930. his messenger.

  931. God

  932. sends

  933. his power.

  934. God

  935. sends

  936. his presence,

  937. his very

  938. presence

  939. to help

  940. Daniel.

  941. God

  942. delivers.

  943. He's a

  944. God who

  945. is not

  946. distant.

  947. He's a

  948. God who's

  949. not removed.

  950. He's a

  951. God who

  952. is not

  953. apathetic

  954. or

  955. uncaring.

  956. He's a

  957. God who

  958. is present.

  959. He's a

  960. God who

  961. answers.

  962. He's a

  963. God who

  964. is imminently

  965. He's a

  966. God who

  967. is available

  968. to his

  969. people.

  970. And God

  971. helps

  972. Daniel.

  973. Why?

  974. Well,

  975. Daniel says

  976. here,

  977. because I

  978. was found

  979. blameless.

  980. I was found

  981. blameless.

  982. And because

  983. I have

  984. done

  985. no harm.

  986. Daniel's

  987. commitment

  988. to God

  989. just

  990. continued

  991. to shine

  992. through his

  993. life.

  994. And Daniel

  995. somehow

  996. understood

  997. that in

  998. the providence

  999. of God,

  1000. he was using

  1001. this very

  1002. situation

  1003. to draw

  1004. attention

  1005. to God's

  1006. power

  1007. and to

  1008. use

  1009. the lion's

  1010. den

  1011. as a

  1012. gospel

  1013. catalyst

  1014. for this

  1015. king,

  1016. for this

  1017. heathen

  1018. king.

  1019. Somehow

  1020. Daniel

  1021. understood

  1022. at the

  1023. very

  1024. beginning

  1025. what

  1026. God

  1027. was

  1028. about

  1029. to

  1030. accomplish.

  1031. I

  1032. was

  1033. faithful.

  1034. I

  1035. was

  1036. blameless.

  1037. And

  1038. I

  1039. have

  1040. done

  1041. no

  1042. harm.

  1043. This

  1044. word

  1045. I've

  1046. done

  1047. no

  1048. harm

  1049. should

  1050. sound

  1051. a bit

  1052. familiar

  1053. because

  1054. if we

  1055. remember

  1056. at the

  1057. very

  1058. beginning

  1059. of this

  1060. chapter

  1061. when the

  1062. satraps

  1063. and officials

  1064. were put

  1065. together

  1066. they were

  1067. put together

  1068. for the

  1069. purpose

  1070. of so

  1071. that

  1072. we find

  1073. in

  1074. verse 2

  1075. Daniel

  1076. had

  1077. faithfully

  1078. served

  1079. his

  1080. God

  1081. and

  1082. that

  1083. translated

  1084. into

  1085. faithfully

  1086. serving

  1087. this

  1088. king.

  1089. And I

  1090. trust

  1091. for those

  1092. of us

  1093. who are

  1094. doing

  1095. our

  1096. service

  1097. as to

  1098. the

  1099. Lord

  1100. wherever

  1101. you are

  1102. that your

  1103. service

  1104. is to

  1105. God

  1106. and

  1107. what

  1108. that

  1109. entails

  1110. or what

  1111. that

  1112. means

  1113. is that

  1114. it's

  1115. also

  1116. helping

  1117. to

  1118. promote

  1119. and

  1120. encourage

  1121. and

  1122. advance

  1123. the

  1124. company

  1125. that

  1126. you're

  1127. in

  1128. and

  1129. the

  1130. managers

  1131. that

  1132. you

  1133. work

  1134. for

  1135. the

  1136. two

  1137. are

  1138. not

  1139. incompatible

  1140. in this

  1141. event

  1142. Daniel

  1143. knew

  1144. that

  1145. his

  1146. life

  1147. would

  1148. be

  1149. preserved

  1150. because

  1151. he

  1152. understood

  1153. what

  1154. God

  1155. meant

  1156. to

  1157. accomplish

  1158. through

  1159. it

  1160. of

  1161. course

  1162. throughout

  1163. history

  1164. not

  1165. all

  1166. people

  1167. who

  1168. are

  1169. blameless

  1170. are

  1171. preserved

  1172. in

  1173. this

  1174. way

  1175. we

  1176. can

  1177. just

  1178. look

  1179. to

  1180. the

  1181. example

  1182. of

  1183. Christ

  1184. who

  1185. through

  1186. the

  1187. divine

  1188. appointment

  1189. of

  1190. God

  1191. was

  1192. put

  1193. to

  1194. death

  1195. on

  1196. the

  1197. cross

  1198. and

  1199. was

  1200. raised

  1201. the

  1202. third

  1203. day

  1204. we

  1205. know

  1206. the

  1207. testimony

  1208. of

  1209. the

  1210. apostle

  1211. Paul

  1212. who

  1213. at

  1214. the

  1215. very

  1216. end

  1217. of

  1218. his

  1219. life

  1220. his

  1221. head

  1222. was

  1223. taken

  1224. off

  1225. and

  1226. throughout

  1227. the

  1228. course

  1229. of

  1230. his

  1231. life

  1232. the

  1233. suffering

  1234. that

  1235. he

  1236. experienced

  1237. at

  1238. the

  1239. hands

  1240. of

  1241. wicked

  1242. men

  1243. we

  1244. know

  1245. that

  1246. Peter

  1247. the

  1248. apostle

  1249. Peter

  1250. the

  1251. tradition

  1252. is

  1253. that

  1254. he

  1255. was

  1256. also

  1257. crucified

  1258. upside

  1259. down

  1260. for

  1261. the

  1262. sake

  1263. of

  1264. his

  1265. confession

  1266. of

  1267. Christ

  1268. and

  1269. then

  1270. the

  1271. martyrs

  1272. throughout

  1273. history

  1274. we

  1275. know

  1276. that

  1277. blameless

  1278. people

  1279. do not

  1280. are not

  1281. always

  1282. preserved

  1283. from

  1284. hard

  1285. things

  1286. but

  1287. we

  1288. do

  1289. know

  1290. that

  1291. God

  1292. will

  1293. deliver

  1294. them

  1295. through

  1296. those

  1297. hard

  1298. things

  1299. as

  1300. the

  1301. song

  1302. that

  1303. we

  1304. sang

  1305. I

  1306. think

  1307. it

  1308. was

  1309. one

  1310. of

  1311. the

  1312. one

  1313. last

  1314. two

  1315. songs

  1316. that

  1317. we

  1318. all

  1319. await

  1320. and

  1321. anticipate

  1322. those

  1323. of

  1324. us

  1325. who

  1326. are

  1327. in

  1328. Christ

  1329. Jesus

  1330. wait

  1331. for

  1332. the

  1333. ultimate

  1334. deliverance

  1335. from

  1336. this

  1337. life

  1338. to

  1339. be

  1340. captured

  1341. into

  1342. glory

  1343. to

  1344. be

  1345. with

  1346. our

  1347. Savior

  1348. that's

  1349. the

  1350. real

  1351. deliverance

  1352. that

  1353. all

  1354. of

  1355. us

  1356. are

  1357. looking

  1358. forward

  1359. to

  1360. to

  1361. be

  1362. reunited

  1363. with

  1364. Christ

  1365. and

  1366. Daniel

  1367. proved

  1368. Daniel

  1369. proved

  1370. that

  1371. God's

  1372. promise

  1373. to

  1374. Abraham

  1375. was

  1376. true

  1377. where

  1378. God

  1379. says

  1380. I

  1381. will

  1382. bless

  1383. those

  1384. who

  1385. bless

  1386. you

  1387. and

  1388. curse

  1389. those

  1390. who

  1391. curse

  1392. you

  1393. in

  1394. you

  1395. all

  1396. the

  1397. nations

  1398. will

  1399. be

  1400. blessed

  1401. and

  1402. that

  1403. leads

  1404. us

  1405. to

  1406. our

  1407. final

  1408. point

  1409. that

  1410. God

  1411. uses

  1412. Darius

  1413. to

  1414. vindicate

  1415. Daniel

  1416. he

  1417. used

  1418. Darius

  1419. to

  1420. vindicate

  1421. Daniel

  1422. notice

  1423. verse

  1424. 23

  1425. then

  1426. the

  1427. king

  1428. was

  1429. exceedingly

  1430. glad

  1431. he

  1432. commanded

  1433. that

  1434. Daniel

  1435. be

  1436. taken

  1437. up

  1438. out

  1439. of

  1440. the

  1442. so

  1443. Daniel

  1444. was

  1445. taken

  1446. up

  1447. out

  1448. of

  1449. the

  1452. no

  1453. kind

  1454. of

  1455. harm

  1456. was

  1457. found

  1458. on

  1459. him

  1460. because

  1461. he

  1462. had

  1463. trusted

  1464. in

  1465. his

  1466. God

  1494. and

  1495. before

  1496. they

  1497. reached

  1498. the

  1499. bottom

  1500. of

  1501. the

  1502. den

  1503. the

  1504. lions

  1505. overpowered

  1506. them

  1507. and

  1509. all

  1510. their

  1511. bones

  1512. in

  1513. pieces

  1514. do

  1515. we

  1516. trust

  1517. in

  1518. God

  1519. to

  1520. bring

  1521. about

  1522. proper

  1523. vindication

  1526. we

  1527. working

  1528. the

  1530. to

  1531. get

  1532. what

  1582. that we

  1583. feel

  1588. we

  1589. those

  1590. who

  1591. like

  1592. Christ

  1593. are

  1597. Father

  1607. are

  1608. the

  1609. exhortations

  1610. from

  1611. Jesus

  1612. on

  1613. the

  1614. sermon

  1615. on

  1616. the

  1617. mount

  1618. that

  1619. says

  1620. love

  1621. your

  1622. enemies

  1623. do

  1624. good

  1625. to

  1626. those

  1627. who

  1628. persecute

  1629. you

  1630. pray

  1631. for

  1632. those

  1633. who

  1634. despitefully

  1635. use

  1636. you

  1637. and

  1638. then

  1639. entrusting

  1640. ourselves

  1641. to

  1642. God

  1643. who

  1644. promises

  1645. that

  1646. vengeance

  1647. is

  1648. mine

  1649. I

  1650. will

  1651. repay

  1652. says

  1653. the

  1654. Lord

  1655. is

  1656. there

  1657. the

  1658. kind

  1659. of

  1660. confidence

  1661. in

  1662. our

  1663. heart

  1664. that

  1665. says

  1666. God

  1667. whatever

  1668. you

  1669. bring

  1670. about

  1671. in

  1672. the

  1673. situation

  1674. if

  1675. it

  1676. means

  1677. more

  1678. challenges

  1679. and

  1680. trouble

  1681. for

  1682. me

  1683. and

  1684. opportunities

  1685. to

  1686. shine

  1687. your

  1688. triumph

  1689. through

  1690. the

  1691. situation

  1692. and

  1693. I'm

  1694. going

  1695. to

  1696. trust

  1697. you

  1698. to

  1699. deal

  1700. with

  1701. those

  1702. individuals

  1703. who

  1704. are

  1705. bringing

  1706. harm

  1707. to

  1708. me

  1709. because

  1710. I

  1711. believe

  1712. that

  1713. you

  1714. are

  1715. the

  1716. God

  1717. who

  1718. is

  1719. over

  1720. all

  1721. vengeance

  1722. belongs

  1723. to

  1724. you

  1725. you

  1726. will

  1727. repay

  1728. says

  1729. the

  1730. Lord

  1731. and

  1732. God

  1733. faithfully

  1734. does

  1735. that

  1736. through

  1737. Darius

  1738. invindicating

  1739. Daniel

  1740. finally

  1741. we find

  1742. in verse

  1743. 25 to

  1744. 28

  1745. that

  1746. God

  1747. uses

  1748. Gentiles

  1749. to

  1750. exalt

  1751. his

  1752. name

  1753. God

  1754. uses

  1755. Gentiles

  1756. to

  1757. exalt

  1758. his

  1759. name

  1760. this

  1761. is

  1762. astounding

  1763. here we

  1764. are

  1765. in

  1766. Babylon

  1767. now

  1768. in

  1769. the

  1770. city

  1771. of

  1772. Babylon

  1773. now

  1774. the

  1775. empire

  1776. of

  1777. media

  1778. Persia

  1779. that

  1780. the

  1781. reason

  1782. why

  1783. Daniel

  1784. and

  1785. his

  1786. buddies

  1787. are

  1788. in

  1789. this

  1790. place

  1791. to

  1792. begin

  1793. with

  1794. is

  1795. because

  1796. of

  1797. the

  1798. rebellion

  1799. and

  1800. wickedness

  1801. of

  1802. their

  1803. forefathers

  1804. and

  1805. the

  1806. condemnation

  1807. of

  1808. the

  1809. judgment

  1810. of

  1811. God

  1812. the

  1813. discipline

  1814. of

  1815. God

  1816. to

  1817. bring

  1818. them

  1819. here

  1820. into

  1821. exile

  1822. and

  1823. God

  1824. has

  1825. used

  1826. that

  1827. instrumentally

  1828. as a

  1829. conduit

  1830. for the

  1831. gospel

  1832. to the

  1833. Gentiles

  1834. and now

  1835. it's a

  1836. Gentile

  1837. who will

  1838. be a

  1839. light

  1840. to the

  1841. other

  1842. Gentiles

  1843. check

  1844. check

  1845. this

  1846. out

  1847. verse

  1848. 25

  1849. then

  1850. king

  1851. Darius

  1852. wrote

  1853. to

  1873. a

  1874. decree

  1875. that

  1876. in

  1877. all

  1878. my

  1879. royal

  1880. dominion

  1881. people

  1882. are

  1883. to

  1885. and

  1887. before

  1888. the

  1889. God

  1890. of

  1892. for

  1893. he

  1894. is

  1895. the

  1897. God

  1898. enduring

  1899. forever

  1900. his

  1902. shall

  1903. never

  1904. be

  1905. destroyed

  1906. his

  1913. he

  1914. delivers

  1915. and

  1916. rescues

  1917. he

  1918. works

  1919. signs

  1920. and

  1921. wonders

  1922. in

  1923. heaven

  1924. and

  1927. he

  1928. who

  1929. has

  1933. the

  1934. power

  1935. of

  1938. so

  1939. this

  2005. do

  2018. that

  2021. and

  2022. the

  2023. ultimate

  2024. delivering

  2025. power

  2026. that

  2027. God

  2028. gives

  2029. over

  2030. our

  2031. sin

  2032. over

  2033. our

  2034. future

  2035. judgment

  2036. over

  2068. who

  2069. paid

  2070. the

  2071. price

  2072. for

  2073. our

  2074. sins

  2075. on

  2076. the

  2077. cross

  2078. Jesus

  2079. who

  2080. died

  2081. and

  2082. rose

  2083. again

  2084. so

  2085. that

  2086. we

  2087. could

  2088. have

  2089. our

  2090. sins

  2091. paid

  2092. for

  2093. the

  2094. punishment

  2095. absolved

  2096. through

  2097. faith

  2098. in

  2099. Christ

  2100. have

  2101. you

  2102. come

  2103. to

  2104. a

  2105. place

  2106. of

  2107. believing

  2108. that

  2109. Jesus

  2110. is

  2111. the

  2112. only

  2113. way

  2114. to

  2115. God

  2116. by

  2117. confessing

  2118. your

  2119. sin

  2120. by

  2121. asking

  2122. for

  2123. repentance

  2124. by

  2125. turning

  2126. your

  2127. heart

  2128. and

  2129. bowing

  2130. your

  2131. knee

  2132. to

  2133. the

  2134. king

  2135. king

  2136. Jesus

  2137. and

  2138. making

  2139. him

  2140. the

  2141. lord

  2142. of

  2143. your

  2144. life

  2145. essentially

  2146. saying

  2147. God

  2148. you

  2149. call

  2150. the

  2151. shots

  2152. in

  2153. my

  2154. life

  2155. and

  2156. I

  2157. want

  2158. my

  2159. life

  2160. like

  2161. Daniel

  2162. to

  2163. demonstrate

  2164. humility

  2165. to

  2166. you

  2167. and

  2168. faithfulness

  2169. so

  2170. that

  2171. you

  2172. can

  2173. make

  2174. me

  2175. useful

  2176. I

  2177. trust

  2178. if

  2179. there's

  2180. anyone

  2181. here

  2182. this

  2183. morning

  2184. that

  2185. does

  2186. not

  2187. know

  2188. Jesus

  2189. as

  2190. their

  2191. savior

  2192. this

  2193. might

  2194. be

  2195. the

  2196. moment

  2197. that

  2198. the

  2199. invitation

  2200. is

  2201. open

  2202. the

  2203. offer

  2204. is

  2205. available

  2206. all

  2207. you

  2208. need

  2209. to

  2210. do

  2211. is

  2212. acknowledge

  2213. that

  2214. God

  2215. alone

  2216. can

  2217. save

  2218. it's

  2219. not

  2220. based

  2221. upon

  2222. your

  2223. works

  2224. it's

  2225. not

  2226. based

  2227. upon

  2228. your

  2229. performance

  2230. praise

  2231. the

  2232. lord

  2233. it's

  2234. not

  2235. based

  2236. upon

  2237. the

  2238. checks

  2239. and

  2240. balances

  2241. of

  2242. your

  2243. life

  2244. that

  2245. all

  2246. seem

  2247. to

  2248. go

  2249. well

  2250. on

  2251. the

  2252. tally

  2253. sheet

  2254. because

  2255. we

  2256. know

  2257. that

  2258. all

  2259. have

  2260. sinned

  2261. and

  2262. fallen

  2263. short

  2264. of

  2265. the

  2266. glory

  2267. of

  2268. God

  2269. we've

  2270. all

  2271. missed

  2272. the

  2273. mark

  2274. as

  2275. it

  2276. were

  2277. but

  2278. only

  2279. Jesus

  2280. has

  2281. lived

  2282. a

  2283. perfect

  2284. life

  2285. and

  2286. has

  2287. been

  2288. able

  2289. to

  2290. meet

  2291. the

  2292. standard

  2293. that

  2294. you

  2295. and

  2296. I

  2297. could

  2298. never

  2299. meet

  2300. and

  2301. so

  2302. he

  2303. paid

  2304. the

  2305. price

  2306. so

  2307. that

  2308. we

  2309. could

  2310. enjoy

  2311. forgiveness

  2312. that

  2313. comes

  2314. only

  2315. through

  2316. faith

  2317. in

  2318. Jesus

  2319. I

  2320. trust

  2321. our

  2322. faith

  2323. in

  2324. God

  2325. that

  2326. God

  2327. is

  2328. helping

  2329. us

  2330. like

  2331. Daniel

  2332. to

  2333. not

  2334. to

  2335. see

  2336. our

  2337. trials

  2338. as

  2339. something

  2340. to

  2341. pray

  2342. away

  2343. but

  2344. seeing

  2345. our

  2346. trials

  2347. as

  2348. opportunities

  2349. opportunities

  2350. to

  2351. spotlight

  2352. and

  2353. showcase

  2354. the

  2355. triumph

  2356. of

  2357. God

  2358. the

  2359. delivering

  2360. power

  2361. of

  2362. God

  2363. in

  2364. that

  2365. situation

  2366. oh

  2367. may

  2368. God

  2369. help

  2370. us

  2371. to

  2372. do

  2373. that

  2374. faithfully

  2375. Lord

  2376. thank

  2377. you

  2378. for

  2379. the

  2380. life

  2381. of

  2382. Daniel

  2383. for

  2384. his

  2385. example

  2386. for

  2387. his

  2388. testimony

  2389. Father

  2390. I

  2391. pray

  2392. that

  2393. we

  2394. would

  2395. follow

  2396. after

  2397. Daniel's

  2398. example

  2399. especially

  2400. that we

  2401. would

  2402. seek

  2403. to be

  2404. humble

  2405. that we

  2406. would

  2407. seek

  2408. to be

  2409. faithful

  2410. that we

  2411. would

  2412. capitalize

  2413. on the

  2414. moments

  2415. of

  2416. trouble

  2417. to

  2418. draw

  2419. attention

  2420. to

  2421. your

  2422. triumph

  2423. help

  2424. us

  2425. to

  2426. be

  2427. faithful

  2428. we

  2429. pray

  2430. in

  2431. Jesus

  2432. name

  2433. amen

  2434. God

  2435. bless

  2436. you

  2437. have

  2438. a

  2439. great

  2440. week

  2441. miracle
