  1. Well, as Pastor David mentioned, it's a gift to be here with you today.

  2. It's a testimony of God's grace and kindness.

  3. ! I'll never forget last year messaging Pastor that I needed to cancel because I was in the hospital for leukemia and didn't know when I was going to be getting out.

  4. And so today it's just such a pleasure to be here with you and it's always an honor to be able to share God's Word with His people.

  5. This morning we will be studying Daniel chapter 9, the first 19 verses.

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  6. And the message, the title of our message today is Praying to a Sovereign God.

  7. As we read through this passage, two overarching questions rise to the surface.

  8. The first is this.

  9. If God is sovereign over the kingdoms of the earth and over the course of history, including the events of our individual lives, and He is,

  10. then what role do our prayers play in His sovereign plan?

  11. After we attempt to answer that question, we will spend the rest of our time with the second one.

  12. How then shall we pray?

  13. I hope you came hungry this morning because this passage is an all-you-can-eat buffet.

  14. And it's impossible for us to exhaust the amazing and rich content of this passage with the time that we have together.

  15. And so it's my goal to adequately scratch the surface for us and to send you home with enough to enjoy for the rest of the week.

  16. We have a lot of content to cover, so let's begin.

  17. Daniel 9, chapter 1, verse 1.

  18. One of the primary messages in the book of Daniel is that God is sovereign over the kingdoms of the world and over the course of history.

  19. In the beginning two verses of chapter 1 of our book, it says that Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem and besieged it,

  20. and the Lord gave Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand.

  21. In chapter 2 of Daniel, God prophetically gives both king Nebuchadnezzar and Daniel a panoramic view of the Gentile kingdoms of the world that would rise,

  22. starting with Babylon and extending all the way until the end of time when Christ's everlasting kingdom smashes them all and reigns supreme forevermore.

  23. His kingdom is the stone not cut out by human hands that becomes a great mountain which fills the whole earth.

  24. Daniel, chapter 2, verses 34 through 35.

    Daniel 2:34–35

  25. These mighty, terrible kingdoms of man become as chaff which the wind blows away before him.

  26. As Daniel says in chapter 2, verse 21, he changes times and seasons.

  27. He removes kings and sets up kings.

  28. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.

  29. And in verse 37, Daniel declares that it is the God of heaven that has given you, O king Nebuchadnezzar,

  30. the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory, and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell,

  31. the children of man, the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, making you rule over them all.

  32. Interestingly enough, in chapter 4,

  33. this same man to whom God had given the beasts of the field is stricken to become like a beast of the field

  34. because he thinks that by his own sovereignty he rules over the world.

  35. And for the next seven years, we see great king Nebuchadnezzar exercise his free will

  36. as he eats grass with the cattle in the field.

  37. Still, God preserves his throne.

  38. After all this time,

  39. now you and I know politics.

  40. The leader of the most powerful empire in the world goes insane,

  41. and there's no coup to replace him?

  42. Over the course of seven years?

  43. This is only by the sovereign hand of God,

  44. and it's because God's intent was to humble him, not replace him.

  45. When the time was right,

  46. God restored him,

  47. and this once pagan king who gave glory to himself

  48. is now giving glory to whom glory is due.

  49. For his dominion is an everlasting dominion,

  50. and his kingdom endures from generation to generation.

  51. All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing,

  52. and he does according to his will

  53. among the hosts of heaven

  54. and among the inhabitants of the earth.

  55. And none can stay his hand or say to him,

  56. what have you done?

  57. Daniel chapter 4, verses 34 through 35.

    Daniel 4:34–35

  58. Well, we come to chapter 9.

  59. And in partial fulfillment of Jeremiah 25, verse 12,

    Jeremiah 25:12

  60. Belshazzar, king of Babylon,

  61. was killed on October 16, 539 B.C.

  62. Babylon fell to the Medo-Persian Empire.

  63. And as it says in Daniel chapter 5, verse 30,

    Daniel 5:30

  64. Darius received the kingdom.

  65. We are now in the first year of Darius' reign.

  66. So it could be 539 or it could be 538 B.C.

  67. when Daniel perceives the 70 years.

  68. We're not quite certain who Darius the Mede really is.

  69. No historical documents outside the Bible

  70. give record of him specifically.

  71. The word Darius is used in inscriptions

  72. for at least five Persian rulers,

  73. indicating that this is probably a title

  74. rather than a name.

  75. While commentators and historians

  76. have different opinions about his identity,

  77. there is good evidence that Darius

  78. could be King Cyrus himself.

  79. For one, historically,

  80. there is no interval of rulership

  81. between Belshazzar of Babylon

  82. and Cyrus who conquered Babylon.

  83. It's also interesting to note

  84. that Cyrus was born in 600 B.C.,

  85. which means he was about to turn 62

  86. when he conquered Babylon.

  87. The same age as Darius

  88. in Daniel chapter 5, verse 30,

    Daniel 5:30

  89. when he received the kingdom.

  90. Coincidence or not,

  91. whether Darius is Cyrus

  92. or Darius is some agent ruling

  93. for Darius

  94. over the realm of the Chaldeans,

  95. the important thing for us to understand

  96. is ultimately Cyrus is king

  97. of the Medo-Persian Empire

  98. and it is Cyrus

  99. who in his first year

  100. in 538 B.C.

  101. issues the decree

  102. for the Jews to return to Jerusalem

  103. according to Ezra chapter 1, verse 1.

    Ezra 1:1

  104. And it is Cyrus

  105. or in Ezra chapter 1, verse 1.

    Ezra 1:1

  106. This too is by the sovereign hand

  107. of the Lord

  108. because more than 150 years earlier,

  109. God had spoken

  110. through the prophet Isaiah.

  111. Cyrus, he is my shepherd

  112. and he shall fulfill all my purpose

  113. saying of Jerusalem,

  114. she shall be built

  115. and the temple,

  116. your foundation,

  117. shall be laid.

  118. I believe that Daniel at this time

  119. was already aware

  120. of Isaiah's prophecy.

  121. In fact, according to the Jewish historian

  122. Josephus,

  123. it was Daniel

  124. as Cyrus' prime minister

  125. who shared Isaiah's prophecies

  126. with Cyrus,

  127. influencing him

  128. to make the decree.

  129. I'm sure it was quite a spectacle

  130. for Daniel

  131. knowing Jeremiah 25

  132. and Jeremiah 29

  133. and Isaiah 44

  134. and Isaiah 45,

  135. witnessing

  136. the judgment

  137. of Babylon

  138. by a kingdom

  139. inferior to them,

  140. the chest of arms

  141. of silver,

  142. as it were,

  143. led by a man

  144. named none other than Cyrus.

  145. But here we read

  146. in our passage

  147. what really arrests

  148. Daniel's attention

  149. are the words of Jeremiah

  150. which he had sent

  151. in a letter

  152. to the surviving exiles

  153. of Babylon.

  154. It's recorded

  155. in Jeremiah 29

  156. and we don't have time

  157. to read both chapters

  158. 25 and 29

  159. but we will read

  160. 29 verses 10 through 14.

  161. It says,

  162. For thus says the Lord,

  163. when 70 years

  164. are completed

  165. for Babylon,

  166. I will visit you

  167. and I will fulfill

  168. to you my promise

  169. and bring you back

  170. to this place

  171. for I know the plans

  172. I have for you

  173. declares the Lord.

  174. Plans for welfare

  175. and not for evil

  176. to give you a future

  177. and a hope.

  178. Then you will call upon me

  179. and come to me

  180. and pray to me

  181. and I will hear you.

  182. You will seek me

  183. and find me

  184. when you seek me

  185. with all of your heart.

  186. I will be found by you

  187. declares the Lord

  188. and I will restore

  189. your fortunes

  190. and gather you

  191. from all the nations

  192. and all the places

  193. where I have driven you

  194. declares the Lord.

  195. And I will bring you

  196. back to the place

  197. from which I sent you

  198. into exile.

  199. Daniel realizes

  200. that the end

  201. of the 70 years

  202. is imminent.

  203. His entire life

  204. was a testimony

  205. to the sovereign power

  206. of God

  207. which drove Israel

  208. into exile,

  209. transformed the heart

  210. of a pagan king,

  211. exalted him repeatedly,

  212. Daniel,

  213. to high positions

  214. of influence

  215. in a foreign land

  216. who shut the mouths

  217. of hungry lions

  218. and revealed to him

  219. divine mysteries

  220. and visions

  221. of the future.

  222. Here he perceives

  223. that God

  224. is about to fulfill

  225. his word again.

  226. So what is Daniel's promise?

  227. Does he resign

  228. to some form

  229. of fatalism

  230. and just sit back

  231. and wait and say,

  232. ah, God's got this?

  233. No.

  234. Convinced of God's faithfulness

  235. to fulfill his word.

  236. By faith,

  237. he is driven

  238. into fervent,

  239. intercessory prayer.

  240. Why?

  241. Because faith moves us

  242. to draw near to God

  243. and to unite ourselves

  244. with him

  245. in his purposes.

  246. And we do that

  247. through prayer.

  248. This is the purpose

  249. of true

  250. and effective prayer.

  251. God responds favorably

  252. to our faith.

  253. He promises

  254. that when we call

  255. upon him

  256. and come

  257. and pray to him,

  258. he will hear us.

  259. And he will be found

  260. by us

  261. when we seek him

  262. with all of our hearts.

  263. And he will fulfill

  264. his promises to us

  265. by his sovereign power.

  266. God's promise,

  267. referenced by Jeremiah,

  268. to restore Israel

  269. to their land

  270. and to fellowship

  271. and communion with him

  272. are rooted

  273. in the Abrahamic

  274. and Mosaic covenants.

  275. In Genesis 12,

    Genesis 12:7

  276. verse 7,

  277. he tells Abram,

  278. to your offspring

  279. I will give this land.

  280. And in Genesis 15,

  281. God himself passes

  282. through the pieces

  283. in a covenantal ceremony

  284. indicating that

  285. the fulfillment

  286. of his covenant

  287. with Abram

  288. and Abram's offspring

  289. depended on him alone.

  290. Then in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 28 chapter mention

  291. chapter 28,

  292. Moses lays before Israel

  293. the promise

  294. of blessings from God

  295. when they obey

  296. his commandments

  297. and remain loyal

  298. and faithful to him.

  299. Followed by the promise

  300. of curses from God

  301. when they turn against him

  302. in rebellion

  303. and disloyalty,

  304. including exile

  305. from the land.

  306. Prophetically,

  307. in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 28:49

  308. chapter 28,

  309. verse 49,

  310. Moses warns,

  311. the Lord will bring

  312. a nation against you

  313. from far away,

  314. from the end of the earth,

  315. swooping down

  316. like the eagle.

  317. It's no coincidence

  318. that in Daniel

    Daniel 7:4

  319. chapter 7,

  320. verse 4,

  321. Babylon

  322. is envisioned

  323. as a lion

  324. with eagle's wings.

  325. This very image

  326. decorated the city

  327. of Babylon,

  328. including the very throne room

  329. of King Nebuchadnezzar himself.

  330. For many years,

  331. God was abundantly generous

  332. in his blessings

  333. toward Israel.

  334. And tragically,

  335. Israel responded

  336. with hardness of heart,

  337. rebellion,

  338. and idolatry.

  339. They suffered the curses

  340. God promised

  341. for their disobedience.

  342. But just as God

  343. had promised

  344. to curse Israel

  345. for their disobedience,

  346. he also promised

  347. restoration

  348. when they repented

  349. and turned to him.

  350. At this time,

  351. in Daniel chapter 9,

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  352. God had yet

  353. to restore Israel

  354. back to their land.

  355. And Israel

  356. had yet to call upon him

  357. and come and pray to him.

  358. In fact,

  359. we see in verse 13

  360. of Daniel's confession,

  361. as it is written

  362. in the law of Moses,

  363. all this calamity

  364. has come upon us,

  365. yet we have not

  366. entreated

  367. the favor of the Lord

  368. our God,

  369. turning from our iniquities

  370. and gaining insight

  371. by your truth.

  372. So Daniel turns

  373. to God

  374. in prayer.

  375. And God responds

  376. immediately.

  377. Within that same year,

  378. Ezra chapter 1

    Ezra 1 chapter mention

  379. says that

  380. the Lord stirred up

  381. the spirit of Cyrus,

  382. king of Persia,

  383. to make the decree

  384. for Israel

  385. to return to Jerusalem

  386. so that the temple

  387. may be rebuilt.

  388. Consequently,

  389. Israel returns

  390. to Jerusalem

  391. and the temple

  392. is rebuilt.

  393. And later,

  394. in Ezra chapter 10

    Ezra 10 chapter mention

  395. and in Nehemiah chapter 9,

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  396. Israel as a nation

  397. turns to God

  398. in repentance

  399. and prayer,

  400. reminiscent

  401. of Daniel's prayer

  402. in our passage today.

  403. We see in this example

  404. before us

  405. that through true

  406. and effective prayer,

  407. Daniel is moved

  408. to fulfill God's word

  409. by faith

  410. and obedience.

  411. and through Daniel's prayer,

  412. God is moved

  413. to fulfill his word

  414. by a sovereign power.

  415. Ultimately,

  416. God used Daniel

  417. as his instrument

  418. to fulfill

  419. his sovereign purpose.

  420. So we see

  421. God's sovereignty

  422. working divinely

  423. through responsible

  424. human agency

  425. to accomplish

  426. his purposes.

  427. In this,

  428. we see the power

  429. of true

  430. and effective prayer.

  431. Jesus said,

  432. ask and it will be

  433. given to you.

  434. Seek and you will find.

  435. Knock and it will be

  436. opened to you.

  437. For everyone who asks

  438. receives

  439. and the one who seeks

  440. finds

  441. and to the one who knocks

  442. it will be opened.

  443. Matthew chapter 6

    Matthew 6:7

  444. verses 7 and 8.

  445. He also says

  446. in Matthew chapter 21

    Matthew 21:22

  447. verse 22,

  448. whatever you ask

  449. in prayer,

  450. you will receive

  451. if you have faith.

  452. James tells us

  453. the prayer of a righteous

  454. person has great power

  455. as it's working.

  456. James chapter 5

    James 5:18

  457. verse 18.

  458. God moves powerfully

  459. in response

  460. to faithful prayer

  461. not only to change

  462. the course of history

  463. and the external

  464. circumstances

  465. of our lives,

  466. but also to change

  467. the conditions

  468. of our hearts.

  469. Reordering

  470. our affections,

  471. revealing

  472. his wisdom

  473. and reconciling

  474. us to himself.

  475. In the end,

  476. God's purposes

  477. are fulfilled

  478. within us,

  479. through us,

  480. and around us.

  481. If only we knew

  482. the greatness

  483. of the power of God

  484. that works

  485. through prayers,

  486. we would not be

  487. so slothful

  488. and casual

  489. in our exercise

  490. of it.

  491. we would pray

  492. without ceasing

  493. as the Apostle Paul

  494. urges us to do

  495. and as Daniel

  496. demonstrated

  497. throughout his life

  498. even when he is

  499. threatened to be cast

  500. into a dead alliance.

  501. However,

  502. not all prayers

  503. are true

  504. and effective.

  505. James also says

  506. you ask

  507. and do not receive

  508. because you want

  509. to spend it

  510. on your own passions.

  511. And Jesus said

  512. when you pray

  513. you must not be

  514. like the hypocrites.

  515. Matthew chapter 6

    Matthew 6:5

  516. verse 5.

  517. And so we turn

  518. now to our next

  519. question.

  520. How then

  521. shall we pray?

  522. In the following

  523. verses of our passage

  524. Daniel models

  525. for us

  526. true and effective

  527. prayer.

  528. The kind of prayer

  529. that pleases

  530. and moves

  531. the heart

  532. of God.

  533. We begin

  534. with a posture

  535. of true

  536. and effective

  537. prayer.

  538. the first thing

  539. we notice

  540. in our passage

  541. is Daniel's faith.

  542. Daniel trusted

  543. the word of God.

  544. Furthermore,

  545. he trusted

  546. the scriptures

  547. as the word

  548. of God.

  549. It says in Daniel

    Daniel 9:2

  550. chapter 9

  551. verse 2

  552. he perceived

  553. in the books.

  554. In other words,

  555. he was studying

  556. the scriptures

  557. and it was his faith

  558. and what he read

  559. that resulted

  560. in the marvelous

  561. prayer that follows.

  562. Daniel's prayer

  563. is informed

  564. by God's word

  565. and energized

  566. by his faith

  567. in God

  568. to fulfill

  569. what he promised.

  570. This emphasizes

  571. the fact

  572. that anyone

  573. who wishes

  574. to approach

  575. God in prayer

  576. must do so

  577. on the basis

  578. of faith.

  579. We know this

  580. because without faith

  581. it is impossible

  582. to please God

  583. for whoever

  584. would draw near

  585. to God

  586. must believe

  587. that he exists

  588. and that he rewards

  589. those who seek him.

  590. Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11:6

  591. verse 6

  592. True and effective

  593. prayer is always

  594. preceded by faith

  595. in God.

  596. A firm reliance

  597. on the character

  598. of God

  599. and on his ability

  600. to fulfill

  601. his promises.

  602. And all true

  603. and effective prayer

  604. is shaped

  605. and guided

  606. by what God

  607. has already said

  608. in his word.

  609. The next thing

  610. we notice

  611. is Daniel's

  612. fervency.

  613. In verse 3

  614. it says

  615. then I turned

  616. my face

  617. to the Lord God.

  618. We know

  619. from Daniel

    Daniel 6:10

  620. chapter 6

  621. verse 10

  622. that it was

  623. Daniel's custom

  624. to pray

  625. three times daily

  626. while he faced

  627. Jerusalem.

  628. But I believe

  629. that there is

  630. much more

  631. to this expression

  632. than just

  633. his physical

  634. position.

  635. This speaks

  636. of a sincerity

  637. of heart

  638. and mind

  639. of focused

  640. determination.

  641. an undivided

  642. devotion

  643. to his cause.

  644. It reminds us

  645. of the man

  646. in Luke

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  647. chapter 11

  648. who's knocking

  649. on his friend's

  650. door for a loaf

  651. of bread

  652. in the middle

  653. of the night.

  654. It's that

  655. persistence.

  656. It's that attitude

  657. that he demonstrates.

  658. It also reminds us

  659. of the persistent

  660. widow who

  661. is petitioning

  662. the unjust

  663. judge

  664. for justice.

  665. it reminds us

  666. of the commitment

  667. and devotion

  668. that was spoken

  669. of about Christ

  670. by the prophet

  671. Isaiah.

  672. Because the

  673. sovereign Lord

  674. helps me

  675. I will not

  676. be disgraced.

  677. Therefore

  678. I have set

  679. my face

  680. like flint

  681. and I know

  682. I will not

  683. be put to shame.

  684. Isaiah

    Isaiah 50:7

  685. chapter 50

  686. verse 7.

  687. And Jesus

  688. fulfilled this

  689. in Luke

    Luke 9:51

  690. chapter 9

  691. verse 51

  692. when it says

  693. when the days

  694. drew near

  695. for him

  696. to be taken

  697. up

  698. he set

  699. his face

  700. to go

  701. to Jerusalem.

  702. This expression

  703. speaks of

  704. unwavering

  705. commitment

  706. to the will

  707. of God.

  708. Not even

  709. Nebuchadnezzar

  710. or Cyrus

  711. could command

  712. the devotion

  713. that God

  714. received

  715. from Daniel.

  716. This was

  717. repeatedly

  718. demonstrated

  719. throughout Daniel's

  720. life and

  721. now is

  722. being repeated

  723. again

  724. in his

  725. prayer.

  726. This

  727. fervency

  728. was further

  729. expressed

  730. by seeking

  731. him by

  732. prayer

  733. and pleas

  734. for mercy

  735. with fasting

  736. and sackcloth

  737. and ashes.

  738. God

  739. was the

  740. chief object

  741. of Daniel's

  742. pursuit.

  743. He fasted

  744. so that he

  745. would not be

  746. diverted from

  747. prayer to

  748. food by

  749. food.

  750. He dressed

  751. in sackcloth

  752. as a sign

  753. of abject

  754. need

  755. and he

  756. covered

  757. himself

  758. in ashes

  759. which was

  760. a traditional

  761. sign of

  762. grief

  763. and humility.

  764. Is this

  765. kind of

  766. fervency

  767. characteristic

  768. of your

  769. prayer life?

  770. Is it

  771. characteristic

  772. of your

  773. posture

  774. before God

  775. as you

  776. attempt to

  777. draw near

  778. to him?

  779. How easily

  780. are we

  781. distracted

  782. by our

  783. prayers,

  784. by something

  785. as simple

  786. as the

  787. ding

  788. of a

  789. text

  790. message?

  791. How often

  792. do our

  793. thoughts

  794. wander

  795. even while

  796. we're in

  797. the middle

  798. of speaking

  799. with God

  800. in prayer?

  801. God

  802. help us

  803. to have

  804. the fervency

  805. of Daniel

  806. when we

  807. come to

  808. him in

  809. prayer.

  810. The last

  811. thing we

  812. need to

  813. quickly note

  814. is Daniel's

  815. humility.

  816. Unlike

  817. many

  818. major,

  819. other major

  820. characters

  821. of the

  822. Old

  823. Testament,

  824. no obvious

  825. sin is

  826. attributed

  827. to Daniel

  828. despite his

  829. exile to

  830. Babylon.

  831. Now we

  832. know he

  833. wasn't

  834. sinless,

  835. but Daniel's

  836. life is as

  837. blameless as

  838. we could ever

  839. hope to be.

  840. Yet through

  841. his confession

  842. and pleas for

  843. mercy,

  844. Daniel humbly

  845. !

  846. acknowledges his

  847. personal guilt

  848. and identifies

  849. himself with

  850. the sins of

  851. God's people

  852. and accepts

  853. the harsh

  854. discipline that

  855. God has

  856. brought upon

  857. them.

  858. This is

  859. remarkable

  860. because we

  861. never see

  862. Daniel complain

  863. about the

  864. fact that

  865. he was

  866. torn from

  867. his home

  868. and his

  869. family at

  870. an early

  871. age.

  872. We never

  873. hear him

  874. murmur about

  875. the chaotic

  876. circumstances of

  877. his life or

  878. the numerous

  879. threats to

  880. end his life

  881. because of

  882. his obedience

  883. to the

  884. Lord.

  885. There is a

  886. question that

  887. we often want

  888. to ask God

  889. in prayer,

  890. and we can

  891. ask it in

  892. two radically

  893. different ways.

  894. It's this

  895. question,

  896. God, why

  897. are you

  898. doing what

  899. you are

  900. doing?

  901. The first

  902. way that we

  903. can ask it

  904. is with the

  905. attitude of

  906. those in

  907. 1 Peter 1

  908. 10, where

  909. it says,

  910. concerning the

  911. salvation, the

  912. prophets who

  913. prophesied about

  914. the grace that

  915. was to be

  916. yours, searched

  917. and inquired

  918. carefully, inquiring

  919. what person or

  920. time the Spirit

  921. of Christ in

  922. them was

  923. indicating when

  924. he predicted

  925. the sufferings of

  926. Christ and the

  927. subsequent glories.

  928. God's wisdom

  929. is a mystery

  930. to us.

  931. This first

  932. attitude is

  933. born of

  934. humility and

  935. a desire to

  936. know God's

  937. wisdom and

  938. to join

  939. ourselves to

  940. him and

  941. his purposes.

  942. Second way

  943. we can ask

  944. this question

  945. is with the

  946. attitude of

  947. those in

  948. Isaiah 45

  949. 9, where

  950. it says,

  951. woe to

  952. him who

  953. strives with

  954. him who

  955. formed him,

  956. a pot among

  957. earthen pots.

  958. does the

  959. clay say

  960. to him

  961. who forms

  962. it, what

  963. are you

  964. making, or

  965. your work

  966. has no

  967. handles?

  968. The second

  969. attitude is

  970. born of

  971. pride and

  972. a desire for

  973. God to

  974. join himself

  975. to us and

  976. our purposes.

  977. It's a

  978. rejection of

  979. God's wisdom

  980. and pursuit

  981. to go another

  982. way.

  983. True and

  984. effective prayer

  985. can only come

  986. from a heart

  987. that is humble

  988. and we should

  989. not accept to

  990. receive a

  991. favorable answer

  992. from the

  993. Lord when we

  994. approach him

  995. in pride.

  996. For God

  997. opposes the

  998. proud but

  999. gives grace

  1000. to the

  1001. humble.

  1002. James 4

  1003. 6.

  1004. So what

  1005. are the

  1006. properties of

  1007. true and

  1008. effective prayer?

  1009. With the

  1010. posture of

  1011. faith,

  1012. fervency,

  1013. and humility,

  1014. Daniel fills

  1015. his prayer

  1016. with worship.

  1017. And you can

  1018. also fit

  1019. thanksgiving

  1020. under this

  1021. category as

  1022. well.

  1023. He worships

  1024. him as the

  1025. great and

  1026. awesome God

  1027. who keeps

  1028. covenant and

  1029. steadfast love

  1030. in verse 4.

  1031. In verse 7,

  1032. to you

  1033. belongs

  1034. righteousness.

  1035. In verse 9,

  1036. to you belong

  1037. mercy and

  1038. forgiveness.

  1039. In verse 12,

  1040. he has

  1041. confirmed his

  1042. words,

  1043. speaking of

  1044. God's truthfulness

  1045. and faithfulness

  1046. to his word.

  1047. In verse 14,

  1048. the Lord has

  1049. kept ready the

  1050. calamity and

  1051. has brought it

  1052. upon us,

  1053. acknowledging that

  1054. he is just in

  1055. his judgment

  1056. upon sin.

  1057. True prayer

  1058. and worship

  1059. are inseparable.

  1060. How can you

  1061. draw near to

  1062. the most

  1063. holy God

  1064. without

  1065. worshiping him?

  1066. it is the

  1067. natural

  1068. outflow of

  1069. a heart

  1070. that loves

  1071. the Lord

  1072. and seeks

  1073. communion

  1074. with him.

  1075. As we

  1076. attempt to

  1077. draw near

  1078. to him,

  1079. we recognize

  1080. that he is

  1081. the great

  1082. and awesome

  1083. God.

  1084. He is

  1085. majestic

  1086. and holy

  1087. and therefore

  1088. there is

  1089. this infinite

  1090. chasm

  1091. that separates

  1092. us from

  1093. him.

  1094. Do you ever

  1095. feel that

  1096. when you

  1097. try to

  1098. pray?

  1099. That you're

  1100. coming to a

  1101. holy God

  1102. and just

  1103. it's like

  1104. how do I

  1105. cross

  1106. the chasm?

  1107. If we want

  1108. to commune

  1109. with him,

  1110. something has

  1111. to bridge

  1112. that gap.

  1113. What else

  1114. is there

  1115. except that

  1116. he is the

  1117. God who

  1118. keeps covenant

  1119. and steadfast

  1120. love,

  1121. calling us

  1122. to the

  1123. reconciliation

  1124. and intimate

  1125. fellowship

  1126. made possible

  1127. only by the

  1128. covenant

  1129. fulfilled for

  1130. us in

  1131. Christ.

  1132. Therefore,

  1133. we are

  1134. encouraged,

  1135. let us

  1136. draw near

  1137. with a

  1138. true heart

  1139. and full

  1140. assurance

  1141. of faith

  1142. with our

  1143. hearts

  1144. sprinkled

  1145. clean

  1146. from an

  1147. evil

  1148. conscience

  1149. and our

  1150. bodies

  1151. washed

  1152. with pure

  1153. water.

  1154. But who

  1155. are the

  1156. benefactors

  1157. of this

  1158. covenant

  1159. and steadfast

  1160. love?

  1161. It is

  1162. those who

  1163. love him

  1164. and keep

  1165. his

  1166. commandments.

  1167. Verse 4.

  1168. The covenant

  1169. applies only

  1170. to true

  1171. worshipers.

  1172. Unbelievers

  1173. and hypocrites

  1174. should not

  1175. expect to be

  1176. pardoned or

  1177. indulged by

  1178. God.

  1179. Worship

  1180. must be

  1181. true,

  1182. flowing from

  1183. a heart

  1184. of love,

  1185. not fake

  1186. ritualism.

  1187. We see

  1188. this from

  1189. the beginning

  1190. chapters of

  1191. the Bible

  1192. when God

  1193. was pleased

  1194. to accept

  1195. the true

  1196. worship of

  1197. Abel but

  1198. rejected the

  1199. hypocritical

  1200. offering of

  1201. Cain.

  1202. Unless we

  1203. love God,

  1204. we have no

  1205. reason for

  1206. concluding that

  1207. he will approve

  1208. of any of

  1209. our actions.

  1210. all our

  1211. duties will

  1212. become corrupt

  1213. before him.

  1214. As Jesus

  1215. said in

  1216. John chapter

    John 4 chapter mention

  1217. 4,

  1218. true

  1219. worshipers

  1220. are those

  1221. who worship

  1222. the Father

  1223. in spirit

  1224. and in truth.

  1225. They are the

  1226. kind of

  1227. worshiper

  1228. that the

  1229. Father

  1230. seeks.

  1231. True

  1232. worship

  1233. pleases

  1234. God and

  1235. it also

  1236. prepares

  1237. our hearts

  1238. for confession

  1239. and repentance.

  1240. When we

  1241. behold God

  1242. and his

  1243. majesty and

  1244. perfection,

  1245. we immediately

  1246. become aware

  1247. of how far

  1248. we fall

  1249. short of

  1250. his glory.

  1251. True

  1252. prayer seeks

  1253. to close

  1254. that gap

  1255. and bring

  1256. us back

  1257. into fellowship

  1258. and union

  1259. with him.

  1260. As J.C.

  1261. Ryle once

  1262. said,

  1263. praying and

  1264. sinning will

  1265. never live

  1266. together in

  1267. the same

  1268. heart.

  1269. Prayer will

  1270. consume sin

  1271. or sin

  1272. will choke

  1273. prayer.

  1274. Isn't

  1275. that true?

  1276. David is

  1277. thorough and

  1278. specific in

  1279. recounting his

  1280. sins and

  1281. the sins

  1282. of his

  1283. people.

  1284. Eleven of

  1285. the fifteen

  1286. verses of

  1287. his prayer

  1288. are spent

  1289. in confession.

  1290. He is

  1291. unhurried.

  1292. He does

  1293. not minimize

  1294. the seriousness

  1295. or number

  1296. of them.

  1297. He makes

  1298. no excuses.

  1299. He openly

  1300. acknowledges

  1301. their culpability

  1302. and calls

  1303. their sin

  1304. for what

  1305. it actually

  1306. is.

  1307. It was

  1308. not by

  1309. accident

  1310. or by

  1311. mistake

  1312. of ignorance

  1313. that they

  1314. disobeyed,

  1315. but their

  1316. disobedience

  1317. was willful,

  1318. wicked,

  1319. and rebellious.

  1320. He declares,

  1321. the Lord is

  1322. righteous

  1323. in all the

  1324. works he

  1325. has done.

  1326. There is

  1327. no justifiable

  1328. reason that

  1329. Israel had

  1330. departed from

  1331. the Lord

  1332. and rebelled.

  1333. And though

  1334. the Lord

  1335. tried to

  1336. correct them

  1337. through the

  1338. prophets,

  1339. they compounded

  1340. their culpability

  1341. by hardening

  1342. their hearts

  1343. and refusing

  1344. to repent.

  1345. To him

  1346. belongs

  1347. righteousness,

  1348. but to us

  1349. open shame.

  1350. How often

  1351. we underestimate

  1352. the weight

  1353. and magnitude

  1354. of our wickedness

  1355. and guilt

  1356. before God

  1357. or try to

  1358. minimize it.

  1359. we can be

  1360. so slothful

  1361. in our

  1362. confession.

  1363. Instead of

  1364. taking the

  1365. time to

  1366. really name

  1367. our offenses

  1368. toward God

  1369. and grieve

  1370. over the

  1371. grotesque

  1372. nature of

  1373. them,

  1374. we try to

  1375. brush them

  1376. away with

  1377. a single

  1378. word.

  1379. But Daniel

  1380. models for

  1381. us true

  1382. penitence

  1383. in the right

  1384. way to honor

  1385. God through

  1386. confession.

  1387. True

  1388. confession

  1389. then leads

  1390. us to

  1391. restoration

  1392. and

  1393. reconciliation.

  1394. On the

  1395. basis of

  1396. God's

  1397. mercy

  1398. and

  1399. righteousness,

  1400. Daniel

  1401. pleads

  1402. for

  1403. restoration.

  1404. Of your

  1405. city

  1406. Jerusalem

  1407. in

  1408. verse

  1409. 16

  1410. and

  1411. 18.

  1412. Of

  1413. your

  1414. sanctuary

  1415. which

  1416. lies

  1417. desolate

  1418. in

  1419. verse

  1420. 17.

  1421. And

  1422. your

  1423. people

  1424. verse

  1425. 19.

  1426. This

  1427. is

  1428. exactly

  1429. what

  1430. God

  1431. said

  1432. he

  1433. had

  1434. planned

  1435. to

  1436. do

  1437. through

  1438. the

  1439. words

  1440. of

  1441. Moses,

  1442. Isaiah,

  1443. Jeremiah,

  1444. and other

  1445. prophets.

  1446. It was

  1447. Daniel's

  1448. confidence

  1449. in the

  1450. character

  1451. of the

  1452. covenant

  1453. keeping

  1454. God

  1455. that he

  1456. is able

  1457. to boldly

  1458. pray for

  1459. God

  1460. to restore

  1461. these

  1462. things.

  1463. As I

  1464. have said

  1465. before,

  1466. true

  1467. prayer

  1468. seeks to

  1469. close the

  1470. gap between

  1471. us and

  1472. God

  1473. and unite

  1474. ourselves

  1475. with him

  1476. and his

  1477. purposes.

  1478. God

  1479. stands ready

  1480. to forgive

  1481. and to

  1482. restore

  1483. us

  1484. if we

  1485. will

  1486. just

  1487. seek

  1488. him

  1489. in

  1490. true

  1491. faith

  1492. and

  1493. repentance.

  1494. What

  1495. stands

  1496. between

  1497. you

  1498. and

  1499. him

  1500. today?

  1501. What

  1502. is

  1503. stopping

  1504. you

  1505. from

  1506. experiencing

  1507. the

  1508. restoration

  1509. that he

  1510. wants

  1511. to

  1512. accomplish

  1513. in

  1514. your

  1515. heart

  1516. and

  1517. life?

  1518. Abandon

  1519. your

  1520. idols.

  1521. They

  1522. can't

  1523. save

  1524. you.

  1525. Turn

  1526. to

  1527. the

  1528. one

  1529. and

  1530. only

  1531. sovereign

  1532. God

  1533. who

  1534. saves

  1535. and

  1536. restores.

  1537. This

  1538. brings us

  1539. to our

  1540. last

  1541. and

  1542. final

  1543. point.

  1544. The

  1545. pursuit

  1546. of

  1547. true

  1548. and

  1549. effective

  1550. prayer.

  1551. What

  1552. is

  1553. the

  1554. ultimate

  1555. goal

  1556. of

  1557. true

  1558. and

  1559. effective

  1560. prayer?

  1561. It's

  1562. the same

  1563. answer

  1564. to the

  1565. question

  1566. what

  1567. is

  1568. the

  1569. chief

  1570. end

  1571. of

  1572. man

  1573. that

  1574. we

  1575. read

  1576. in

  1577. the

  1578. Westminster

  1579. confession

  1580. of

  1581. faith

  1582. to

  1583. glorify

  1584. God

  1585. and

  1586. to

  1587. enjoy

  1588. him

  1589. forever.

  1590. Daniel

  1591. expresses

  1592. that

  1593. at

  1594. the

  1595. end

  1596. of

  1597. his

  1598. prayer.

  1599. Oh

  1600. Lord,

  1601. hear.

  1602. Oh

  1603. Lord,

  1604. forgive.

  1605. Oh

  1606. Lord,

  1607. pay

  1608. attention

  1609. and

  1610. act.

  1611. Delay

  1612. not

  1613. for

  1614. your

  1615. own

  1616. sake.

  1617. Oh

  1618. my

  1619. God,

  1620. because

  1621. your

  1622. city

  1623. and

  1624. your

  1625. people

  1626. are

  1627. called

  1628. by

  1629. your

  1630. name.

  1631. Daniel

    Daniel 9:19

  1632. chapter

  1633. 9,

  1634. verse

  1635. 19.

  1636. As

  1637. long

  1638. as

  1639. Israel

  1640. remained

  1641. in

  1642. exile

  1643. and

  1644. Jerusalem

  1645. lay

  1646. in

  1647. ruins,

  1648. they

  1649. were

  1650. a

  1651. byword

  1652. among

  1653. all

  1654. the

  1655. pagan

  1656. nations

  1657. of

  1658. the

  1659. world.

  1660. And

  1661. the

  1662. God

  1663. of

  1664. Israel

  1665. appeared

  1666. to

  1667. be

  1668. powerless

  1669. and

  1670. without

  1671. glory.

  1672. Daniel

  1673. wanted

  1674. to see

  1675. God's

  1676. promises

  1677. of

  1678. restoration

  1679. fulfilled.

  1680. He

  1681. wanted

  1682. to see

  1683. for all

  1684. of

  1685. God's

  1686. people

  1687. to

  1688. finally

  1689. return

  1690. to

  1691. him

  1692. with

  1693. their

  1694. whole

  1695. hearts.

  1696. And

  1697. he

  1698. wanted

  1699. to

  1700. see

  1701. God's

  1702. glory

  1703. fill

  1704. the

  1705. earth

  1706. as

  1707. the

  1708. stone

  1709. not

  1710. cut

  1711. with

  1712. human

  1713. hands

  1714. becomes

  1715. a great

  1716. mountain

  1717. that filled

  1718. the

  1719. God's

  1720. love.

  1721. Don't

  1722. you want

  1723. that

  1724. too?

  1725. I know

  1726. I do.

  1727. So let's

  1728. turn with

  1729. our whole

  1730. hearts

  1731. to God

  1732. in prayer.

  1733. Gracious

  1734. Heavenly

  1735. Father,

  1736. you are

  1737. so holy

  1738. and you

  1739. are so

  1740. good.

  1741. Thank you

  1742. for your

  1743. mercy

  1744. and your

  1745. kindness.

  1746. God

  1747. thank you

  1748. for

  1749. Christ

  1750. and for

  1751. the

  1752. covenant

  1753. that

  1754. allows

  1755. us

  1756. to

  1757. draw

  1758. near

  1759. to

  1760. you

  1761. with

  1762. confidence

  1763. and

  1764. boldness.

  1765. Thank you

  1766. God

  1767. for changing

  1768. our

  1769. hearts.

  1770. I pray

  1771. Lord

  1772. that you

  1773. would

  1774. help

  1775. us

  1776. and give

  1777. us the

  1778. faith

  1779. and the

  1780. fervency

  1781. and the

  1782. humility

  1783. that we

  1784. need

  1785. in our

  1786. prayer

  1787. life.

  1788. I pray

  1789. God

  1790. that you

  1791. would

  1792. give us

  1793. hearts

  1794. of true

  1795. worshipers

  1796. and that

  1797. God

  1798. you would

  1799. give us

  1800. hearts

  1801. ready

  1802. to

  1803. confess

  1804. and to

  1805. repent.

  1806. And I

  1807. pray

  1808. Lord

  1809. that God

  1810. you would

  1811. bring

  1812. restoration

  1813. and

  1814. reconciliation

  1815. Lord

  1816. where there

  1817. still

  1818. remains

  1819. a distance

  1820. between

  1821. us

  1822. and you.

  1823. Align

  1824. us

  1825. with your

  1826. purposes.

  1827. Teach

  1828. us your

  1829. will.

  1830. And

  1831. Lord

  1832. I pray

  1833. that you

  1834. would be

  1835. glorified

  1836. by our

  1837. lives.

  1838. Help

  1839. us Lord

  1840. we ask

  1841. in Jesus

  1842. name.

  1843. Amen.

  1844. Thank you.
